Starting point is 00:00:01 Twizzlers keep the fun going. Yeah, I know. I just stopped whatever you were listening to to tell you that Twizzlers keep the fun going. Well, irony isn't my forte, but twisty, chewy, yummy Twisler sure is. So think of Twislers as a little pallet cleanser for whatever's queued up,
Starting point is 00:00:18 which, by the way, should be coming very soon. Like any second now. Okay, Twizzlers, time to keep the fun going. Which of the nearly 100 lighthouses around Lake Huron this encounter took place in has been kept a secret. The person who told it didn't want to reveal too much.
Starting point is 00:01:13 He was worried it would make him look silly, that people wouldn't believe him. But this was a story that he held on to for 60 years. And a part of me has to wonder if the reason he didn't reveal the location was because he didn't want anyone else to go looking for him. The man had been sent to a lighthouse overlooking the lake in the 1940s.
Starting point is 00:01:42 He was to take over from the current keeper who was quickly approaching retirement. The prior keeper was supposed to have already left the lighthouse when the man arrived, but for some reason he had stuck around, wanting to be there personally for his replacement's arrival. He gave him a tour of the lighthouse, telling him everything he needed to know about the day-to-day running. But then he poured them both a cup of coffee, sat down on the opposite side of the kitchen table and took a deep breath. He said that he had seen things during his 30 years at the lighthouse.
Starting point is 00:02:18 Things he couldn't quite explain. He told a man sitting opposite him that soon he would see them too. Everyone who spends long enough here sees them. He wasn't the first. His replacement wouldn't be the last. But then he gave him one specific piece of advice. He said that at some point the man would see something down on the beach below at night and that whatever he did he needed to stay away from it.
Starting point is 00:02:51 Do not go down to the beach when you see it. Do not approach it. If you bother it, you will regret it for the rest of your life. The new keeper smirked as he sipped his coffee. Was the old man messing with him? thought, had the years here weathered away his mind. The old man said that he had been there for 30 years. The new keeper could stay here as long as he wanted, as long as he didn't interfere with the things that should be left alone. The younger keeper tried to ask what exactly he was
Starting point is 00:03:26 talking about, but the old man stood up, picked up his belongings and left. There was nothing further to discuss, he didn't have any answers that would satisfy the new keeper. He had been there for several months now. The strange comments the old keeper had made quickly fallen out of his mind and he had settled comfortably into his new role. It was late one November evening. A cool wind was blowing up as he stepped out onto the balcony and lit his pipe. Down there on the beach, he saw someone. This was unusual. The area surrounding the lighthouse wasn't exactly bustling with people even during the summer. It was a quiet, lonely stretch of the lake. But as he puffed on his pipe, he was sure he could see someone down there.
Starting point is 00:04:18 Just the shadow of a figure walking across the beach. As he watched, he realised there was something odd about this person's walking. It was as if they were dragging one leg along, as though they were injured maybe. but he lost track of the shadowy figure momentarily and then it was gone. He stood out there for a while longer, keeping an eye on the beach, but no sign of the person could be spotted. This likely would have been forgotten. But when spring rolled around, he saw the figure again. The same strange movement, the same dark shadow, the same vanishing trick.
Starting point is 00:04:59 about it unnerved the keeper enough to ask his assistant if he had seen anything like that during his shifts. But he claimed he hadn't. He never saw anyone walking on the beach at night. Summer arrived, and he spotted it again. Who was this person? he thought to himself. It was late in the autumn at the closing period of his first year in the lighthouse. The keeper took his nightly ritual of smoking his pipe on the balcony. when he saw it once again. The strange dragging shadow. He quickly rushed back inside, down the steps and out onto the beach.
Starting point is 00:05:41 He needed to know who this was. As he headed out between the sand dunes, he saw it. Just 50 feet away from him. The keeper switched on his flashlight and pointed it in the direction of the figure. It looked like a man with his back. to the keeper, still walking further away, but he looked odd. He was tall in torn and messy clothes. His head was covered in scraggly long black hair that hung low. His head was bowed, and his body hunched, staring down at the sand at his feet as he dragged his right leg along.
Starting point is 00:06:24 The keeper shouted out, Who are you? What are you looking for? The figure stopped. It turned its head slightly and looked directly at the lighthouse keeper. That was when he saw the thing that the keeper remembered most. The eyes, burning eyes that seemed to glow red, staring deep into his soul. The figure didn't speak. It just launched towards the keeper without any warning, sprinting across the sand in his direction. The king's The keeper screamed in terror and began to run, not looking back until he reached the lighthouse door. As he opened it, he turned back just in time to see the figure running between the dunes and approaching fast. He slammed the door shut, locking it from the inside.
Starting point is 00:07:18 He took a moment trying to regain his breath. When he heard a gentle sound on the door, was the figure knocking? But before he could respond, the door began to shake. And quickly the shaking grew more intense, the banging louder. It was as if it was running at the door, trying to knock it down in a blind rage. The hinges buckled. This wasn't possible the keeper thought, but it looked like the entire door was going to come down.
Starting point is 00:07:51 He ran through the dining room and towards the tower. As he reached the stairs he heard a humonger. crash. The door had been broken down. He ran up the stairs, the sound of the metallic steps echoing as the figure followed closely behind. Pushing open the trap door to the top, he sat on top of it, hoping to keep it shut. But the figure pushed on the door and began to lift the keeper into the air as if he weighed nothing. He had a plan to run around the tower's walkway and back down the stairs. At the bottom of the towel was a stop. still doorway that could be bolted from the other side. As he leapt off the trap door, the figure quickly pulled itself up through the gap and resumed
Starting point is 00:08:36 its chase. He didn't look back, he just ran as fast as he could around the walkway, convinced he could feel its breath on his neck at one point. But then he spotted something else. The first ray of sunlight. was there. As the first sign of the sun hit the top of the tower, he suddenly realised it had brought silence. He stopped by the trapdoor once again and looked back across the walkway. The figure was gone. There was no sign of it. It was like it hadn't even been there to begin
Starting point is 00:09:15 with. Each season after that, he would see it, the figure on the beach. He never went down to investigate ever again. Is this just a creepy story? A tale lighthouse keepers share to scare one another on those long, dark, lonely nights? Or is there something more to it? Because the Great Lakes have a reputation. They are very strange indeed. Get yourself a warm drink, dim the lights and get comfortable, because this was just one of the horrifying legends of Lake Huron. Welcome to the tape library. Lake Huron is sometimes thought of as the forgotten Great Lake,
Starting point is 00:10:07 technically connected to Lake Michigan through the straits of Mackinor, but considered its own independent entity. The lake is the third or fourth largest freshwater lake on earth, depending on who you ask. On one side sits the U.S. Inside sits the US state of Michigan, on the other the Canadian provenance of Ontario. People often refer to these beautiful lakes as inland seas, and it's easy to see why. The sheer magnitude of them is breathtaking.
Starting point is 00:10:36 But as beautiful as the Great Lakes are, they are also deadly. Countless lost vessels lay under the surface of the lake, along with the bodies of those dragged down with them. For that reason alone, it shouldn't be a huge surprise. that Huron and all the other Great Lakes are hotbeds for weird stories, from UFO sightings to strange urban legends, cursed ships to sea monsters, and of course, ghosts. Lake Huron in particular has so many ghost stories that we could be here all night, but I'm just going to share with you a few of my favourite stories I've come across while reading about the lake.
Starting point is 00:11:16 Let's begin with the most common of all Great Lake stories. the ghost ships. Vic was a factory worker in Saginaw Bay, but whenever he got word that the catch was good out on the lake, he would hop into his boat and head out to catch them fish. His supervisor often just let him go, in return for bringing back some dinner that evening, of course. There was one morning in the early 1960s, when Vic sailed his small boats out onto the water at Bayport on the southwestern side of the lake. The The rain hadn't been forecast, but not long after his lion had dipped in the water, it began to pour from the sky. It got so heavy that it made it difficult to see very far, but Vic didn't care.
Starting point is 00:12:05 He had a few beers and all the time in the world. But that was when he heard something, the excited screech of goals. They didn't normally come out this far but he could tell from the sounds that the goals must have found food. This was the sound of a feeding frenzy. He turned back to his fishing. But it was strange. The goals seemed to be getting louder and louder. He turned just in time to see it behind him.
Starting point is 00:12:36 A large old wooden ship just a few feet away. The goals were surrounding it, chirping and swooping down onto the deck. Vic looked at it, curiously. The ship had certainly seen. better days, but that was when he noticed something odd. There was no one on the deck, just swarms of goals. Vic stood up as the ship silently glided closer and closer, and then he saw what the goals were feeding on. Tied to the mast of the ship were what appeared to be the remains of a man. They were picking at his flesh. His eyes were already gone. He panicked.
Starting point is 00:13:21 turned the engine on and made a quick getaway for port. It wasn't long until Vic was on land, but the rain meant that no one else was around. He jumped in his car and started to drive, desperately keeping an eye out for anyone who could help him. As luck would have it, he drove past the Michigan State Trooper, who was parked on the side of the road, not too far from the docks. Vic slammed on his brakes, jumped out of the car and ran at the trooper, telling him that he had seen a dead body tied to an old ship out there in the rain. It was the beer the trooper smelled on Vic's breath that instantly made him doubt his story.
Starting point is 00:14:03 But still he drove Vic back to the docks. The rain had cleared up and visibility had now improved, but they could see no sign of this unmanned ship on the lake. The trooper said he would investigate further, but Vic heard nothing more about the lake. ship. No one reported it. Vic told people this story over the years, but he had no idea that there potentially was a backstory to what he saw. Back in October of 1870, a ship named the Joseph A. Holum went missing during a powerful storm on the lake. No one quite knows what the
Starting point is 00:14:43 fate of this ship was, but it was found three days after the storm had passed. Its crew was missing. all bar one man who was found tired to the mast his eyes had been pecked out by birds the ship was found just by bay port maybe Vic simply saw an echo of that discovery it was the summer of 1884 when a reporter from the Detroit Post named Patrick O'Malley arrived in Harrisfield Michigan he had come on a count of the many strange legends that had popped up around Lake Huron. During a conversation in an inn one night with a local fisherman, he was informed about a supposed haunted shipwreck. It was the wreck of the marine city, a side-wheel steamer that took passengers across the Great Lake in style in the decades prior. As the 1880s began, the onboard dining room was the
Starting point is 00:15:47 domain of a man named Richard Schultz, the head waiter. A man who was very passionate about his job, maintaining high standards for his guests on board. At the end of service each night, Schultz would enter the pitch black dining room with a lantern in hand and inspects every element of it to make sure the staff had left it in tip-top condition, ready for the next day. The steam has set sail on August 28th of 1880 with over 100 passengers and 40 crew members on board and unknown to the crew free stowaways below deck it wasn't long before the passengers smelt something burning no one knows exactly how the fire started but it spread quickly one of the first parts of the ship to burn was where the lifeboats
Starting point is 00:16:42 were stored miraculously most of those on board survived but nine didn't as the ship found its way to the bottom of the lake. The remains of the ship protruding above the water by several feet, leaving it as a monument to those who died. Among them was the head waiter, Richard Schultz. But as Patrick soon learned as he listened to the fisherman's story, that wasn't the last that was seen of Schultz. Apparently some nights, if you head to the remains of Marine City, you can see a light still moving around. The legends when you're went that this was Schultz, still inspecting where the dining room should have been with his lantern. Obviously, Patrick took this to just be a local legend, but the fisherman offered to take him there
Starting point is 00:17:33 later that night. Patrick arrived at the dock with the fisherman. He pulled out his pocket watch and looked at the time. Midnight. The time Schultz was said to do his round. The fisherman pointed out to the wreck. Patrick couldn't believe his eyes. There was a green light that seemed to almost be floating above the wreck, out on the lake. He couldn't wrap his head around what exactly he was seeing, as the small light passed over the top of the wreckage. Patrick demanded to get out there, but the fisherman said they could, but he wouldn't see anything. Any time they tried to get close it would go away. Patrick insisted and they soon approached the ship. But as they got close the light just seemed to fade out. Patrick rode around the entire wreck trying to find an explanation,
Starting point is 00:18:32 but he couldn't. The fisherman informed him that the light returns each August and then it is gone until the following year. It seems Richard Schultz is doomed to carry out his final night shift over and over. There are countless creepy stories of spirits seen roaming the islands and even in the water, from crying women walking in the shallow waters that vanish unexpectedly to screams from long forgotten shipwrecks late in the night. But it's not just ghosts that you have to worry about, like Huron is full of strange unsolved mysteries, but I wanted to briefly highlight two of them. In October of 1919 a boy was hunting on Drummond Island with his dogs.
Starting point is 00:19:23 When his hunting dog suddenly bolted across the beach, thinking they had found the ducks he was searching for, the boy went chasing after him. When he found his dog sniffing around in the sand, he realized they had discovered something much more grisly. A hand was poking up into the air. carried from the elbow down. He rushed back to his village and soon returned with a group of men carrying shovels. They dug the body out of the sand and were met with the sight of a woman, but her lower
Starting point is 00:19:56 half was completely gone. No one recognised her and her body was so decomposed that it made identification difficult, although by a strange coincidence she was later identified by a piece of jewellery she was wearing, and turned out to be the grandmother of the boy who had stumbled upon her that day. The identification had come shortly after the woman had been buried. Now they had an identity, the body was to be exhumed, for reasons I'm not quite clear on. The county sheriff accompanied some of the locals to the unnamed grave, where she had been buried. But when they finally lifted it out and opened her coffin, they were surprised by what they saw. It was empty.
Starting point is 00:20:42 To this day no one knows how she died, or what happened to her body. She is far from the only person to meet an unexplained end on Lake Huron, but I thought we'd look at a more recent example. In 2005, a small boat named the Seaslife was found by another cruiser. The couple in the cruiser had approached the ship after being surprised to see a much smaller craft, out on what was quite a rough day. They soon realised the boat was empty. The Coast Guard boarded it just south of Mariquette Island and found a strange scene. The ship was in good working order, the life jackets were still on board, the stereo was still playing music,
Starting point is 00:21:32 but the owners of the ship, a young couple who were lawyers in Michigan, were nowhere to be seen. All of their belongings were still on board, including money and valuables. The only sign that anything strange might have happened was the discovery of the woman's running shoe, with the knob of the boat's GPS bracket wedged into the soul. A couple of weeks later, the body of Lana Stempion, the owner of that shoe, washed up, bloated and naked, on the shores of the lake. To this day, what remains of Chuck Rutherford, her commitment. companion on that boat remains a mystery. I've got a couple of strange little ghost stories for you next.
Starting point is 00:22:17 One night in the late 1800s, the captain of a ship on the lake was sent overboard when his vessel was struck by a rogue wave. His body was never found, but his peg leg was washed ashore close by, which was identified because his initials were carved into it. In lieu of a body, at least his family had this as a reminder of him, and his widow displayed it above their fireplace, which is where it sat undisturbed for a full year. It was the captain's son who woke up first, to the sound of something rustling. Initially he thought it was something outside. Another huge storm had whipped up, but as he stepped into the living room where the fireplace stood. He was shocked to see the leg, moving. It was just kind of vibrating back and forth. As the boy described it, he said it looked like it was
Starting point is 00:23:23 shivering. He rushed to the mother's bedroom, waking her and telling her what he had seen. She didn't seem shocked at all. She said that she had been dreaming of her late husband at that exact moment. and she believed a storm had simply brought his spirit back to them on that night. It was, after all, the anniversary of his death. There was a strange thing in this tale, because just a couple of days later, the captain's wife dropped down dead, unexpectedly. She was buried with the pegleg. To the north of the lake, on the St. Mary's River, you will find,
Starting point is 00:24:08 land. Today if you visit it you'll find numerous refilling stations that once dotted the island have been transformed into shelters for hikers and those who used water trails that run through there. In the 1990s a kayaker was passing through. He had been wild camping in several spots around the lake and rather than using the shelters decided to do the same on Lyme Island. completely unaware that he was in for something of an unforgettable night. Wild camping wasn't technically allowed, so he took himself a little inland from the water, in the hope of being hidden away from any passers-by, despite this being a fairly quiet area of the island anyway.
Starting point is 00:24:59 He set up camp and then decided to start hiking in the area to see what was around. quickly he came across something strange. In the middle of nowhere, surrounded by trees, was a small wooden building with a lit red lantern hanging outside. But he could hear sounds coming from inside. This didn't sound like someone's home. He approached the door and raised the ornate-looking brass anchor-shaped knocker. Soon after, a woman wearing what looked like a 1930s style dress, opened the door. She called the kayaker sailor and invited him inside to relax. He stated that he was just staying the night and wanted to make sure she was okay with him camping
Starting point is 00:25:48 out there, but she insisted that he'd come inside for a drink. As he entered, he couldn't believe it. It felt like he had just walked into a Prohibition-era speakeasy. It was a bar full to the brim. A man in the corner was playing the piano. Beautiful women were sitting at the tables, flirting with the sailors as they all drank glasses of whiskey. It clearly had a theme, like this was some sort of special vintage party that someone had put on. The woman who had brought him inside introduced him to a girl called Maribel. She said the kayaker could pay her after his stay.
Starting point is 00:26:27 And with a clap of her hands, Maribel led the man out of the bar area. She took him out the back door towards a small cottage that resembled a large dollhouse. The entire situation was so strange that the man just kind of went along with it, his head swimming. Merribelle pounced on him as soon as he entered, pushing him to the bed, and the pair spent the entire night together. But that was when things took an even stranger turn. He awoke the following morning and he wasn't in bed with Maribel. He was lying on the floor, surrounded by trees. He looked around trying to get his bearings.
Starting point is 00:27:11 He wasn't far from where the bar had been, so he headed back in the direction of it, trying to piece together what had happened. But when he reached the location, the building was gone. All that remained was a brass anchor-shaped knocker that he found in the overgrown grass. He chalked it all up to a crazy, vivid dream. He worried for his sanity, but that was all it was, a moment of madness. He was exhausted. He had wild dreams and had sleep walked away from his camp.
Starting point is 00:27:44 That was all. But it turned out, unknown to him, that this area had a history. You won't find any records of what they called Ida's Market. Its advertising was all through word of mouth, a secret that the sailors on Lake Huron. would whisper to one another in the 1930s. On Lyme Island, just off the beach and into the woods, there was a bar. Now, brothels weren't exactly uncommon on the shores of the lake at the time, but this one had been successful by keeping a low profile. As the ships would come to refuel, those in the know would skulk off for a few hours at Ida's place, a little wooden building
Starting point is 00:28:30 with an anchor-shaped door-knocker, a red lantern, and a small cottage out back. But the story goes that a sailor who was a frequent visitor to Ida's approached the building one day to find it oddly quiet. He opened the door to find a rather macabre sight. The owner, Ida, was lying on the floor in a pool of her own blood. Her throat had been slit, The large piano player who often doubled as the bar security was slumped over the piano, with an axe in his back. Another girl was in the corner with what appeared to be a broken neck. The cottages out back housed the bodies of three other girls, all of whom had had their throats cut. The sailor in the deck hands he had brought along with him decided to do something.
Starting point is 00:29:24 They didn't want them to be found like this. They didn't want their secrets to get out. And they knew if someone else found this place, all hell could break loose. It could destroy reputations, rip apart families. So they decided to bury the bodies and burn Ida's market to the ground, swearing one another to secrecy. All that remained once they were done was a brass door knocker on the ground. In modern times, fairies are often portrayed as tiny, pretty, winged women, dancing from flower to flower.
Starting point is 00:30:07 However, our ancestors knew fairies took a vast range of forms. Big and small, human-like and bestial, hairy, scaly, feathered and bald, beautiful and horrifying, helpful and hindering. These strange beings, bearing names as varied and numerous as their descriptions, have haunted humankind for as long as people have been telling stories. The Keystone Hagstone, fairies and other mysterious entities of Pennsylvania, is the latest This book from Timothy Renner. When the various peoples of Europe came to live in Pennsylvania, the fairies in all their forms
Starting point is 00:30:37 came with them. Leprecons, bans, and pukas. Tommy knockers, cobalds, goblins, and dwarves. Willow the Wisp, dragons, and phantom black dogs. You'll find them all in this book, as much a part of the Keystone state as they are the old world. Many newspaper articles detailing encounters with these otherworldly beings are reprinted in this book, beside a depth of folkloric research spanning hundreds of years.

In fact, a video from Lake Huron was just included in the latest dump of unclassified documents by the US government, although it does appear to just be a video of a fighter jet, shooting down a balloon. But there are also things. under the water, apparently. Claims of sightings of sea monsters have existed in the area since
Starting point is 00:32:09 records began. The claims of the monsters have varied over the years, but the most commonly sighted one is referred to as a long black serpent-like creature, with a rash of sightings being reported in the 1970s especially, described as anywhere between 20 to 100 feet long. It is often spotted swimming alongside ships, just this long, dark, slivery, moving object that appears and disappears in an instant, seemingly heading deeper and out of sight. If you wanted to single out of point of strangeness on Lake Huron, it would be hard to look past Point O' Box. The number of strange stories that have come out of this area could likely be an episode
Starting point is 00:32:58 in its own right. It's considered one of the most dangerous spots on the lake, due to its reef that extends out to almost two miles, and many ships have met a dark end over the years around there. There are said to be around 105 shipwrecks along Justice Stretch alone. In 1965, a man was sailing with his family along the Michigan coast. The day was getting long and as dusk settled in, a fog bank seemed to appear from nowhere. and pushing on, they decided to wait it out and sat in the fog. There was only a few feet of visibility around them, and they felt isolated and vulnerable. With no sign of the fog
Starting point is 00:33:41 clearing in sight, the man and his son decided it was time to try and move on, and they started to get the boat ready. Suddenly, a white rowing boat appeared just before them. There were eight men on board, with seven rowing and one standing at the front. of the small boat. They instantly realized they were about to crash into this rowboat and the man quickly threw the helm over and changed course. The man at the front of the roadboat though simply waved as if they hadn't just come close to the disaster. The entire family held on for dear life as they made the sharp turn but as the man looked back the rowboat was gone. That was when his son shouted that he could see the bottom.
Starting point is 00:34:28 They were just skirting the edge of the Point O' Barks' Reef. If the rowboat hadn't appeared right in front of them, they would have certainly hit the reef and would have been in a lot of trouble. As the fog slowly cleared, he saw the light at the Pointeau Barks Lighthouse. The man shared his story with author Frederick Stonehouse as an example of how easy it was, even for modern boats to run into trouble on the lake. But what the man failed to notice, was the strangeness of his encounter. Because in the same month, nearly 100 years prior, in that exact location, the Pointero
Starting point is 00:35:11 Barks life-saving crew sank in the exact same type of boat that the man described. All eight men on board lost their lives. The lighthouse at Pointer Barx and the land surrounding it is also said to be very haunted, most notably by the ghost of a woman. Stories about her have persisted for years, but the most famous example dates to the 1990s. In 1992, a couple by the name of Ray Martha Jandoeski took on the lighthouse as the groundskeepers. They had asked their adult daughter Pamela to come and stay with them for a while, a fact that Pamela was hesitant to do. She couldn't really explain it but something about the old lighthouse creeped her out. After a bit of badgering, she agreed
Starting point is 00:36:04 to come to the lighthouse for one night in the summer. Upon arriving, she pushed these negative thoughts to the back of her mind and try to enjoy the beautiful views and calm, quiet atmosphere the lighthouse provided. But on that first night, Pamela was jolted out of her sleep. She couldn't say by what, but she instantly knew something had happened. She glanced around the room. Nothing seemed out of place. But that was when she noticed the bedroom door was open. And outside it was the family dog, Shadow. He was staring down the stairs at something. Pamela called out for the dog to come back to the bedroom, but He ignored her, just continuing to stare forward.
Starting point is 00:36:57 She got out of bed and walked towards the doorway. Still, the dog did not look back. Pamela glanced down the stairs. And there, she saw a woman looking back at her. She must have been in her 30s, in a long, old-fashioned cotton dress and wearing a kitchen apron. She didn't move, she didn't speak. She just stood there, staring back. It was clear to Pamela that this wasn't an intruder.
Starting point is 00:37:30 This woman wasn't really there, or at least not in the way you or I are. But despite all her prior fears, Pamela didn't feel scared in this moment. She felt at ease. The woman at the bottom of the stairs was a calming presence. Without saying a word, Pamela returned to bed, almost on autopilot, and strangely slept soundly until morning. When she spoke to her parents about the woman, they had no idea what she was talking about. But Pamela knew she was real, and she was there, always watching.
Starting point is 00:38:14 The identity of the woman in the lighthouse has never been conclusively solved, but as sightings of her continue to this day, with author Wes Weir's, Ola's whiskey, including a photograph he took as someone peering out of one of the windows at him, one moment, only to vanish in an instant, when he visited the lighthouse to write up this story in his Great Lakes Ghost Storybook. Whoever she is, she is just one of countless lost souls, who call Lake Huron, their home. That's all for this entry into the tape library. To say I barely scratched the surface with the Lake Huron stories here would be an understatement. These were a few of my favourites I came across, but there are so, so many that you can dig into
Starting point is 00:39:02 if you want to take a bit of time to do so. I've mentioned both the authors already in the episode, but my main sources for this one were Great Lakes Ghost Stories, which was recommended to me by someone over on Patreon. And Haunted Lake Huron by Frederick Stonehouse, who is just simply the man when it comes to collecting all these weird stories from the Great Lakes. Obviously I normally do a what really happened section in these episodes where we discuss theories. But I think when we're talking about these types of stories
Starting point is 00:39:31 that feels a little redundant, these are tales that have been passed down by word of mouth for years, stories that may not have been true to begin with, or may have been twisted through retellings over time. But to me, that doesn't make it any less fascinating. It's one of my favourite things I get to do while making this show. to just be able to focus on a single area and take a look at a handful of the weird claims that have sprung out of that place to try and figure out where truth and folklore become
Starting point is 00:40:01 so tightly intermingled. This is obviously the third of these Great Lake episodes that I've done, but if there are any other locations like this that you think are worth a visit, then please do let me know in the comments below. As a quick note, people are slowly beginning to realise that these episodes are now available as videos on Spotify. where premium users get to watch with no ads as far as I understand it. So if you're a Spotify user, you can find me over there.
Starting point is 00:40:27 You may have noticed a slightly bigger gap between this episode and the last. Over the summer, episodes are likely going to slow down a tiny bit. I don't intend to take an extended break, they just might be a little less frequent for a couple of months. This is due to some personal stuff going on outside of the show, so hopefully you'll understand. But the goal is to be back. in full swing come the end of the summer. So if you want to be sure not to miss out on any

Are receiving frequency transmission. A padlock, right? You and I look at a padlock that's on like a locker, and it's got the dial and there's like three numbers, right? And the first number, you have to hit it, and the second number. You have to go around and pass it once and hit the second number.
Starting point is 00:43:37 then the third number is where the thing unlocks, right? We put so much, like, onus on that number, the numbers, the numbers, the numbers. But if you, like, scrape those numbers off and replace them with, like, emojis, or with Arabic or dots or something, it's basically all doing the same thing. Maybe religion or all these stories, these spiritual stories, are all sort of, like, the different iterations of those symbols that I was just talking about. One is numbers, one is emojis, one is glories, one is glories, One is glyphs, one is dots.
Starting point is 00:44:16 But it's all kind of operating completely the same underneath. And that's just basically giving people symbols or stories or guide rails or guideposts to sort of like get them there. The numbers, the numbers, the numbers. It's all doing the same shit underneath unlocking the things. And those three things that you have to hit are one unlocks the gears and that lock opens up. And what is that lock? I don't know. That's a different question.
Starting point is 00:44:53 I'm not answering that one. Stay tuned to Spectar Vision Radio. Stay.
