Starting point is 00:00:00 All five members of the Channel 17 who stayed in this house for four days have seen things which we just can't explain. And all of a sudden I became a believer. From a scientific point of here I have no explanation for what occurred. It was late on a balmy Australian night in Darwin and Troy Radats had been driving down the Stuart Highway in a truck with one of his close friends. What would have felt like a totally ordinary night for the pair changed in an instant. A freak accident occurred. Troy lost control of the vehicle and they crashed. What made matters worse was the truck was loaded with tins of paint thinner.
Starting point is 00:00:46 The accident ignited the truck. The paint thinner quickly escalated things, and Troy and his friend both tragically lost their lives in a blazing inferno. Just weeks later, Troy's close friend, Murph, a grizzled, heavily tattooed biker, was stood in his home staring at a message scribbled on his wall. The anger had been building in Murph for some time. The tragic loss of his friend had only made things worse, and then there was the strange stuff that he had been experiencing. He couldn't wrap his head around what he and his housemates had been witnessing over the last couple of weeks,
Starting point is 00:01:24 but it was the messages that were really getting to him. First, the words fire, skisks, and help, all scribbled onto the walls. Then the word car, spelled out perfectly and neatly piled pebbles on the bathroom floor. All of the housemates had been close with Troy. All had been hurt by his death. They wouldn't pull such a cruel prank. And what's more, Murph knew that the other stuff they had experienced couldn't have been a simple joke.
Starting point is 00:01:56 But it was this latest message that really made him mad. the name Troy spelled out on the wall in front of him. Whatever was leaving the messages had spelled Troy's name wrong. It wasn't him. Some Bink or someone in Murph's home was attempting to imitate his friend, and he would not stand for this. Welcome to the tape library. I'm hoping tonight's tale will be a new one for most of you. I came across this weird little story after discovering Tony Healy and Paul Cropper's super-interesting book.
Starting point is 00:02:30 on Australian poltergeist cases, which I strongly recommend checking out. It's worth reading just for the fact they refer to poltergeist as poults, which might just be the most Australian thing I've ever heard. This episode also wouldn't be possible without the amazing person who uploaded all the Channel 7 news segments on the case. I will include a link to below. So let's get straight into tonight's creepy little tale. Get yourself a warm drink, dim the lights and get comfortable.
Starting point is 00:02:56 It's time for a ghost story. This is the strange case. of the Knife Throwing Poldegeist of Humpty Doe. Chapter 1 Throwing Stones It all started on a rainy night in 1998, just outside of Darwin in the north of Australia, in the small town of Humpty Doe.
Starting point is 00:03:18 A single-storey house that sat on a five-acre patch of land, surrounded by a higher fence. The only entrance was through the pebble driveway that led to the garage. An iron roof extended out to cover a small, laundry room, patio, and that was where five friends were sitting that night. The residents of the home, married couple Andrew and Kirsty Aguess, Dave Clark and his partner Jill Somerville, and their close friend Doug Murphy, or Murph, as they called him. Tucked up inside fast asleep was Jill and Dave's 10-month-old daughter, Jasmine. The group was sat under the iron covering,
Starting point is 00:03:54 watching the storm that night and drinking beers together, watching as the streaks of lightning lit up the darkened sky around them, safe and dry from the thundering rain falling all around. But then, something strange happened. A pebble flew through the air, landing in the middle of the group. There was a moment of silence as they all looked at the small object, but then another flew out of the darkness towards them, and then another. The group all jumped up. Someone was clearly on their property, and they were not happy. They began by shouting out, asking who was there.
Starting point is 00:04:32 All they were met with was the sound of the rain and a crack of thunder, followed by another pebble being thrown at them. They quickly rushed out into the rain and in the direction of the pebble drive, searching throughout the entire grounds that surrounded their home, shouting for whoever it was to show themselves. But while they could never find anyone, the pebbles kept coming. Except in defeat, the group retreated. inside, soaking wet, annoyed, but puzzled at what had just happened. But this wasn't the end.
Starting point is 00:05:07 The events were about to get a lot stranger. Once inside, pebbles continued to be thrown at the group, although now they appeared to be falling from above, landing on furniture and heads as they seemed to almost be appearing from underneath the ceiling. This wasn't possible. The five friends were baffled as to what was going on. When one of them picked up one of the pebbles, they recognised that they seemed to be the same pebbles that lined their drive, but there was a weird detail. The pebbles were totally bone dry. They were also strangely warmed to the touch. They assumed that somehow the pebbles were falling from the loft, so they grabbed a ladder and opened the hatch to go and look up there.
Starting point is 00:05:49 As soon as they did, multiple pebbles fell down onto them from the hatch, but they couldn't figure out how the pebbles had gotten into the loft, nor while they had. appear to be falling through the ceiling. It was almost as if the pebbles were somehow just passing through the ceiling, as though it wasn't even there. The group re-gathered, all unable to explain what was going on. They tried to talk through what was happening, trying to make sense of it. But as they did, other items appeared to fly through the air into their direction. This continued throughout the night. Batteries, tools, broken glass, and most disturbingly of all, kitchen knife. All went flying through the air at random points of the evening, crashing into walls, and at times narrowly missing the residents. This continued for several days. There would be long
Starting point is 00:06:40 periods of nothing happening, when suddenly an item would appear to fall from the sky, out of nowhere. What's more, their belongings were beginning to be destroyed in the process. A CD player was smashed into pieces as it was thrown to the floor. Windows and cabinet doors were broken as objects were thrown at them. This came to a peak one Saturday night when so many pebbles fell to the floor. It made the inside look like a hail storm. Mattresses were upturned when no one was in the room, something that would become a common occurrence throughout the following weeks. Appliances were thrown from the kitchen shelves. But the residents weren't really scared of what they were witnessing, more fascinated by it all. There was something that happened that night though,
Starting point is 00:07:23 that changed their view on it slightly. It was when the sound started. They could hear from what sounded like it was coming from inside the walls. Scratching. Like something was trying to get through the wall, desperately trying to break out. One resident said that that night they didn't sleep at all. The sound of the scratching was heard right by their heads, as they lay in their beds, tormenting them as they tried to rest. Weirdly, the scratching was the thing that really scared them.
Starting point is 00:07:56 It made the entire thing feel more sinister and they began to have serious thoughts about leaving the home. But they had nowhere else to go. Leaving would have to be the last resort. So first, they would try and get some help. He sent a Greek Orthodox priest around and he was a full on one of these exorcist blokes. And he was doing his exorcist thing in Greek or Latin or whatever it was. Chapter 2. Free priests walk into a haunted house. No one in the house was particularly religious, but as is so common in these circumstances,
Starting point is 00:08:32 their first step was to turn to a church. Within moments of Father Stephen de Soez of Darwin-Sent Mary's church entering the home, a kitchen knife flew towards him, narrowly missing his chest, when it appeared to almost just stop in mid-air, mere centimetres from the priest before dropping to the floor. It was quite the welcome for the priest, who instantly told him. the entire thing a lot more seriously than he may have previous to arriving. He stated there was no one in that position to have been able to throw the knife, and he knew that this was not a case of mass hysteria or a hoax. He did have a theory about what was happening though. The priest
Starting point is 00:09:13 believed that someone in the house was a natural medium, even if they weren't aware of it, and that had drawn some sort of spirit to the home. He conducted a ritual that he claimed to stop the spirit from being able to harm anyone, although he did state that if this were actually a poltergeist, then spiritual intervention might not be able to stop it, as it rarely did. Also, as it was likely drawn by a specific person, leaving the home likely wouldn't help. For three days the father's prayers calm the activity, but then it all came back. Objects were once again being thrown at the residence by the invisible presence in their home. Next, Humpty Do's parish priest, Father Tom English, attempted to help.
Starting point is 00:10:01 He visited the home four times and witnessed the flying objects from his very first visit. He claimed a pistol cartridge came flying out of an empty room towards him, which it was hard not to see as a threat. Father Tom admitted this was not the sort of thing he was used to dealing with, but he did want to do what he could to help the group, so he blessed the house anyway, even if he maybe wasn't 100% sure that this would have the desired effect, and it didn't. Instead, the priest seemingly enraged the entity this time around. More objects began being thrown, including a medicine bottle that was flung at the priest's head as he tried to leave. He left the residents a crucifix,
Starting point is 00:10:45 a Bible, and some holy water, while he would hope for the go off and think of an alternative plan. That night the residents were awoken by the sound of one of the windows in the home smashing. The Bible when crossed that Father Tom had left were thrown to the floor, and a vial of holy water cracked and spilled out over a shelf. The entity had shown exactly what it thought of Father Tom's attempts to contain it. In fact, over the following months, they were discovered that attempting to even speak words from the Bible in the home, would simply piss the entity off. Next, a Greek Orthodox priest visited.
Starting point is 00:11:24 He set up an altar on the kitchen table and went room to room blessing each space. Again, the entity was not happy about this. The residence witnessed something invisible, attempting to wrestle the Bible from the priest's hands as he tried to bless the rooms, twisting his arm backwards as it did so. The priest attempted to continue,
Starting point is 00:11:45 but over time it became too much. for the man. Eventually the priest fell into a seat, soaked in sweat, claiming he had never encountered anything like this. The spiritual didn't seem to be the way to control whatever was infecting, the house in Humpty Doe. Chapter 3. Messages from Beyond It was virtually impossible to tell when the poltergeist would act. Often going days between anything happening. Other times incidents were happening minutes after one another. Despite glass and knives often being thrown around, no one was ever hurt. Strangely, the only room that was never affected was the young girl Jasmine's room.
Starting point is 00:12:29 It almost seemed at times that whatever was doing this wasn't actually trying to harm them, more that it was trying to get attention. One of the things I love about this story is the reaction of the residents in the home. These were serious, hard-nosed, working-class Australians. And the way they saw it was that they were there first. They loved this house and loved living with one another. They weren't going to let whatever this was chase them out of their home. They were going to fight.
Starting point is 00:13:00 Plus for most of them, beyond the creepy scratching sounds at night, they found the entire thing more fascinating than scary. This changed though when the messages began. Words would appear on the walls or floor, either written in marker pens, scrabble tiles or even in neatly arranged piles of pebbles. The most disturbing of which was a series of words that spelled out. Fire, skin, car, help, Troy. As we spoke about at the start of our story tonight, earlier that year in January, their close friend Troy Radats, had been incinerated in a terrible road accident on the Stewart Highway, close to their property. The first stones began to fall shortly after this.
Starting point is 00:13:49 It was almost impossible to think that these messages weren't referring to that. But the residents rejected the idea that this was Troy somehow doing this from beyond the grave. It couldn't even spell his name correctly for one thing. They became so angry at the idea of this thing pretending to be their friend. They started shouting and swearing at it, to stop pretending to be Troy. And it worked. All references to their friends. stopped after this foul-mouthed rant at the spirit. They couldn't help but notice at times
Starting point is 00:14:20 that the entity would appear to be listening and play on things that they were discussing, something that became more apparent when a friend visited. On March 20th, a local school teacher called Annette Taylor and her partner were visiting the house. When she saw a large crucifix and Shridant had been created perfectly out of piles of pebbles on the floor, her partner Lloyd Green's said, it was so perfectly constructed, that it would have taken someone hours to create. It would be impossible for it to be put together in the moments between people walking through the hall that it appeared in. Dave crouched down to touch the pebbles, and they flew everywhere, crashing into the walls so loudly it woke the baby who started crying.
Starting point is 00:15:05 Later that day, Annette apparently drew the attention of the entity, who began pelting her with rocks and other objects throughout the day. even at times reporting that she saw objects just hovering in the sky. She spoke to the others about how the phenomenon of poltergeis in her native Maui tradition, stating that while scary, these beings don't normally hurt people. As she said this, a pair of pliers floated through the air towards her young son,
Starting point is 00:15:33 who was sitting next to her. She ripped them from the sky before it could hit him. As she did, the pliers collided with her wrist, leaving a nasty swollen and bruised arm after the fact. Annette became the first person to actually be harmed by the flying objects. Seemingly, the entity didn't like that she seemed to be implying that it was harmless. One of the strangest reported incidents seemed to explain the manner in which the pebbles were being administered. One night after an evening of high activity, the residents went outside to find one of the cars and their outside bar, covered in a layer of pebbles.
Starting point is 00:16:10 They could see gaps on the drive, where it appeared the pebbles had been hoovered up from, seemingly confirming that the pebbles were coming from their drive at least. One afternoon, one of Murth's friends was over enjoying a beer. Murph had popped inside the home, leaving his friend outside for a moment. Murph's friend claimed that he saw a small, black, spherical-looking object, about the size of a fist, moved through the driveway. It passed him and went up into the roof area of the house. He said it appeared to have a long stream of pebbles floating behind it,
Starting point is 00:16:46 almost as though it was collecting them, and taken them up to the loft. Chapter 4, the media Initially, the residents only spoke to friends and the priests about what was going on, but after seven weeks the local Litchfield Times heard about what was going on, and on March 27th editor Jack Ellis, and two reporters came to visit. Jack said that upon arriving in the home he heard a rattle from above, before being pelted with pebbles.
Starting point is 00:17:16 All the residents were in the room and in front of Jack, so he said there was no way they could have done it, before happening again just moments later. This story, combined with an appearance on a radio station by Father Tom, led to numerous media outlets' contact in the residence. And that is when the Channel 7 news show, today, tonight, got in contact. They wanted exclusive access to the home for the foreseeable future. The residents were to gain 2,000 Australian dollars for it, but the main reason for agreeing was so they could, A, stop the barrage of media requests they were getting, and B, invite
Starting point is 00:17:53 a television crew in, who may be able to capture the phenomena on video. Greg Quayle of Today Tonight on Channel 7 arrived at the home on April 4th with a four-man crew and a freelance journalist named Max Anderson. He initially only had two camera men, but decided to recruit two local camera operators to increase his chance of capturing something on video. They went in with the assumption, what they were walking into, was a hoax, and were planning to try and debunk it. Almost instantly, they witnessed objects being thrown when no one was around.
Starting point is 00:18:29 They spent five days and five nights at the home, searching for any possible explanation, checking the structure of the building for holes in the in the roof or ceiling the objects could be falling from. Initially they kept Max Anderson away from the home while they did their initial investigations. They were confident with seven cameras and five people keeping an eye on things. They would be able to get to the bottom of what was happening. But they saw nothing that could account for what was happening. Quayle said that after just two hours in the home, his skeptical take on the events faded away. After enduring an onslaught of flying scissors, stones, knife, his broken glass, and even bullets. It was hard to say that this was a hoax.
Starting point is 00:19:15 All of them saw stones just fall onto tables they were sitting at. Glass randomly smashing against the walls. Danny Sim, the cameraman, was on a ladder next to the loft hatch, when he claims he heard a piece of glass hit the iron roof outside, before seeing it somehow travelling through the roof, passing him and crashing to the floor below. Danny was later in the garage alone when he saw stones falling inside and the sound of a tool smashing into the roof above him. He was later hit in a temple with an AA battery, leaving a headache but no visible injury,
Starting point is 00:19:53 making him only the second person to actually be hurt by the entity. When journalist Max Anderson finally arrived, he saw a battery smashing into a wall next to him within half an hour of being in the home. Outside, two cameramen were loading gear into the car when a knife hit the side of it. No one else was outside at the time. One thing that kept happening during these days
Starting point is 00:20:17 was mattresses and bedding being dragged off the beds and placed against the walls when no one else was in the room. But despite witnessing all of this, Quayle and his crew were grown increasingly frustrated that they couldn't seem to capture any of it on camera. Every time something happened, it would be when the camera was facing the other direction, or they were filming in another room, or the cameras were turned off. While the activity was super unreliable and would have been difficult to predict when and where exactly it would occur,
Starting point is 00:20:48 their inability to get anything on video led the crew to begin to believe that whatever was doing this was toying with them. Like it knew they so desperately wanted to record the activity, and so it would deliberately avoid the cameras. Throughout 100 hours of filming, only one time did they capture an object moving on its own, when a baby bottle flew from the side of the kitchen counter. Even this was filled with frustration though, as the exact moment it moved,
Starting point is 00:21:18 the camera was blocked by a crew member's leg. However, this was only for about two frames. Quayle points out that even with this, there is no way someone could have thrown it at that speed. without being spotted. Moments after this, one of the cameramen was changing the tape in the camera, when a sliver of glass fell directly next to him, further cementing the theory that it was playing with them.
Starting point is 00:21:44 The second the camera turned off, it did something. But they still weren't fully believers just yet, and wanted to hedge their bets. With up to seven cameras filming, they weren't just focusing on the phenomenon. They wanted to keep tabs on all the housemates. desperately trying to catch one of them faking the events, but seemingly at the time at least, they never did. One day when everyone else had left for work, Greg Quayle asked Kirsty to stay out of the house. They locked everything up but left five cameras recording inside with everyone gone. The cameras recorded until the batteries died. Nothing was captured. But as the cameraman approached the house
Starting point is 00:22:25 to replace them, he heard the unmistakable sound of metal tools, hitting the walls inside. They later found the messages, no cameras, no TV, pig camera, written on floors and walls. At times while sitting on the tables outside, Nias would slam into it out of nowhere. One day when Father Tom arrived for his interview with the news team, a bullet once again appeared to fall in front of the priest. Frustrated with the lack of evidence, one cameraman attempted to provoke something by shouting, come on. A shower of stones immediately hit their table, but when they would attempt to provoke it with the cameras on, nothing would happen, or it would happen just out of frame of the shot.
Starting point is 00:23:12 While all the crew believed it was possible, the housemates were somehow throwing these objects, there were just too many times when things would happen, when they either weren't around or were in full view of the crew. They also seemed to think the housemates were being genuine, describing them as at the end of their rope and fed up with people just claiming that they were mentally unstable drugies or just flat-out liars one of the residents Murph was quite volatile to the crew when they first arrived calling them vultures
Starting point is 00:23:44 when the crew told him they had a self-described ghostbuster ready to visit the home when they gave him a call Murph grew increasingly frustrated he wanted this whole thing to end he wanted help Not just a bunch of people there to watch what was happening. On April 7th, the crew finally brought in Ghost Hunter and Psychic Steve Bishop. Reporter Max Anderson thought the show he was putting on was a bit embarrassing.
Starting point is 00:24:12 Sprouting off New Age quips about energy being disturbed as he wandered around the house, talking about oppressive energies, and how the land was dead, and that this was the most extreme case he had ever encountered. Unsurprisingly, Bishop's attempts to deal with the energy, didn't achieve anything, and the activity continued. The television crew then invited Brendan Gowdy, a building maintenance expert to come and join the investigation. He brought with him a thermal imaging camera that they would use on the apparent flying objects
Starting point is 00:24:44 straight after they landed. The intention was that they would be able to capture warm spots, where an object had been touched by fingers, showing that a human being had thrown the object. However, when they did this, they discovered something strange. The objects did show heat on the camera, but all of the thrown objects would be warm all over, in a uniform manner. The residents were not told what the camera was being used for, and apparently for them to have faked this, they would have had to first warm the items up in something like a microwave.
Starting point is 00:25:18 This also backed up the earlier claims that the objects were warmed to the touch. this wasn't exactly concrete proof that what was happening was real, it did at least add an extra layer of mystery to the proceedings. When Gowdy left the home, he said that he came in a skeptic, but now wasn't sure what to believe, stating that, from a scientific point of view, I have no explanation. I was baffled. Nothing about the place added up. Numerous of the crew decided that if there was a hoax going on, that not all of the housemates were in on it. The most likely culprit would have to be Kirsty, as she was the one who was around the most. But they never did catch her in the act of faking anything, and they also reported incidents
Starting point is 00:26:05 when she wasn't around. On April 9th, the television crew left, disappointed by their lack of concrete evidence, but all had become firm believers that something strange was going on in Humpty Doe. When they met with their chief of, editor back in Sydney, the entire crew were clearly shaken by what they had experienced. While they went through hours of footage and were unable to find anything concrete, the audience loved it, and the segment performed very well when it was broadcast later that month. Shortly after the broadcast though, a new piece of footage was sent over by the two local cameramen who had stayed at the house a little longer than the Channel 17.
Starting point is 00:26:47 The evening after the team had left, numerous items had been run. thrown around again and the team set up a camera to try and capture it. Kirsty was standing behind the camera ironing clothes. The camera was pointed towards the doorway of one of the rooms, with a cabinet on the right side of the frame. In the reflection you can just about make out both Kirsty and the cameraman, when suddenly a plastic pot lid flies into shot, hitting the doorframe. Jill walks into the room asking what just happened. As Jared the cameraman, excited, claims he got it.
Starting point is 00:27:23 I'm a little unclear of the timeline of events that happened here. Watching this day-to-night segments, this clip appears to be used a few times, with the suggestion that it points to a possible hoax, but they only fully state this in the final segment, whereas the Hurley and Cropper book makes it sound like they made the discovery of something a miss in the footage, almost straight away. One of the editors noticed some movement from what they believed to be curthy in the reflection, right as the object flew into view.
Starting point is 00:27:51 A crew had filmed with 18 eyewitnesses who all claimed it was true, but now the pressure was put on quail by his bosses to use this clip to debunk the whole thing. They shot a subsequent interview with a spokesman from Australian sceptics, and then apparently started badgering the residents with calls, asking them to explain themselves. Apparently on the phone, Kirstie admitted to hoaxing the whole thing. The news show then ran a brief segment where they declared the haunting a hoax, and that was the end of Humpty Do in their eyes.
Starting point is 00:28:26 The residents were once again on their own. Chapter 5 The Poltergeist Experts Paranormal investigators and writers Tony Healy and Paul Kropper had heard about the Humpty Do haunting when Father Tom English had given a rather excitable interview on the radio about what he had witnessed there. They had spent several months at this point
Starting point is 00:28:49 gathering together poltergeist cases for an article for the British magazine 14th Times about Australian poltergeis. And after hearing about what was going on in Humpty Do, they needed to get there. They had been delayed from getting involved, though, by the Channel 7 team's deal to film in the property. They were frankly baffled by how quickly the team
Starting point is 00:29:10 was happy to declare the entire thing a hoax, despite being so convinced and most of their coverage of the events in the house. Healy and Kropper also viewed today tonight as tabloid journalism and that they likely hadn't done a good job of covering what was going on. The pair finally arrived in Humpty Doe on April 25th. They first met Andrew Mervth, who, unsurprisingly after what they had just been through, weren't really frilled to be inviting more people into their home.
Starting point is 00:29:37 Healy and Kropper spoke to them about other Australian Poltergeist cases and how they were similarities to what the residents were in their residents. to what the residents were facing. This brought their guard down a little bit, as they began to believe the pair were actually there to help them. They felt the television show had made them look like a group of drunken layabouts. The Helian cropper described them as strong-minded, hard-working people who seemed to genuinely believe what was going on
Starting point is 00:30:03 and were furious about how they had been portrayed in the final television segment. Kirstie also explained she hadn't exactly said it was a hoax on the phone. Greg Quayle had phoned her time after time, berating her down the phone for orchestrating a hoax that she repeatedly denied. Finally, after another badgering phone call, this time in the middle of the night, Kirsty said, Look, say what you bloody will like. I did it. Is that what you want me to say? Just leave me alone. That was all it took, and the news reporter ran this as a full confession.
Starting point is 00:30:40 She also claims that what can be seen in the reflection is just a time. unfortunate timing as she was shaking Jasmine's clothes at the same time the object flew. Despite this, Heli and Cropper understandably kept a closer eye on Kirstie than maybe some of the other housemates. Well, they thought her explanation seemed believable. The footage hadn't looked good and there was certainly the possibility that today's night were correcting their assessment of what they believed was taking place in that footage. The housemates claimed that they hadn't experienced anything for a number of days. Strangely, it stopped
Starting point is 00:31:17 after a curious incident. On the 21st of April, Kirsty had gone outside to see two Aboriginal men crouched under a tree on their property. Digging into the dirt with their hands, she shouted out asking what they were doing. Without saying a word and without even
Starting point is 00:31:35 looking at Kirsty, they simply got up and walked away, got into a car and drove off. After that the group had four days apiece. Sure enough, the investigators went outside and found that an area of the ground under the tree had been cleared and an 8-inch deep of one-foot-wide ditch had been crudely dug into the dirt. Through conversations, the pair discovered that this wasn't actually the first time something like this had happened. Andrew and Kirsty had apparently had rocks thrown through their open front door
Starting point is 00:32:08 at an old property they had lived at. I had just assumed it was the work of teenagers messing around. And then after moving again, they experienced objects going missing and reappearing in strange places, most notably a kitchen knife. Despite the today-tonight's crew assertion that Kirsty was behind it all, the other housemates didn't seem to believe it. Plus, these incidents were causing some very real-life issues for them. When they came back from vacation to find their house completely trash,
Starting point is 00:32:41 in their absence. Their landlord attempted to evict the group. The eviction notice was only rescinded once they made all the repairs themselves, something they kept having to do as more items in the home were damaged. These conversations and additional information that Helian Cropper were able to gather were certainly eye-opening and confirmed some of their suspicions about the Channel 7 coverage, but they were understandably a little disappointed that the phenomenon had apparently come to an end. With nothing going on at the house, the two investigators left for the evening,
Starting point is 00:33:16 but stopped in on the local newspaper offices for the Litchfield Times. There they spoke to Jack Ellis and another reporter who had visited the home. Both confirmed that they had seen and experienced strange phenomenon in the house that they couldn't explain. The following morning,
Starting point is 00:33:32 they got a phone call telling them to return to the house quickly. They reached the rear patio and saw Murph and Andrew sitting there, before hearing a loud noise behind them. They turned to see a large light bulb, still intact, coming to a rest on the concrete floor. The pair quickly rushed around the corner to see if anyone could have rolled it towards them, but there was no one there.
Starting point is 00:33:56 Later stating that it would have been impossible due to the layout for someone to have gotten away that fast, and without making a sound. Strangely, none of the housemates could identify the weirdly large-shaped light bulb. Minutes later they all retreated to the kitchen to talk about what had been going on, when the sound of pebbles hitting the roof was once again heard. The investigators arriving in the home had seemingly set things off again. Throughout the afternoon they all witnessed gravel, clothespegs and batteries,
Starting point is 00:34:29 being thrown by an apparently invisible force in the home. Eager to see more, the pair stayed in the house overnight, but the evening was uneventful. The following day, however, it continued. Gravel again falling from the ceiling. A crucifix shot across the room, crashing against the wall close to Paul. Apparently everyone who could have been responsible was in view when these incidents occurred. Tony entered the room shortly after the crucifix incident to witness a four-inch shard of glass, crash into the table.
Starting point is 00:35:02 The investigator's first concern was why they would stay in the home with such a young child. even if this was a hoax the broken glass alone was a concern but the group claimed that no harm ever came to Jasmine and that in fact it almost seemed to leave her alone Andrew had realised that reading aloud from a Bible
Starting point is 00:35:22 seemed to cause the entity to react in some way and numerous times when the investigators were there he would return to one of the back rooms where some of the activity was at its highest an attempt to provoke the spirit into doing something for them to witness something he had done on other
Starting point is 00:35:38 occasions over the prior months since Father Tom had left the Bible there. Sure enough, while doing this, a bullet went flying through the kitchen, followed by a broken shot glass just moments later. The investigators noted that many of the items that were thrown were strangely warm, if they felt them right after the attack. After this, while touring the house again, they found that the mattresses on one of the beds have been pulled off and covered with pebbles. The activity had clearly been kicked up by this latest provocation by Andrew. While sitting in the kitchen, an object hit paw on the knee. It was another bullet and he was sure it seemed to fall onto him directly from above. Every day that these objects would fall, the residents would gather them up and
Starting point is 00:36:24 placed them back in a box outside by the barbecue, only for them to just fall again another time. There were certainly specific items that the poltergeist seemed to enjoy throwing more than others. The activity continued into the night, with knives being thrown, and an AA battery zipping past Jasmine's head at one point. An incident that occurred worryingly close to the housemates making a statement that it seemed to leave Jasmine alone. Was it listening to them, once again? This was the incident that made them decide to stop trying to provoke the poltergeist. Chapter 6. Explanations and Accusations One of the possible explanations made for how they were faking this was by taping objects to the ceiling fans and then to turn the fan on.
Starting point is 00:37:13 Eventually the object would fall off. Because of this, both the investigators and reporter Jack Ellis had all inspected the fans and had them turned off at times to see if this was the cause. Furthermore, they attempted to recreate this and the trajectory of the objects flying just didn't match at all. It was also quite a disturbing thought that the parents of this small child would be willing to have a knife or other dangerous objects attached to a fan, ready to fly off into the room at an unknown time. These accusations were made by Simon Potter of the Skeptics Association, who had quite smugly, in the words of Helian Cropper, appeared on TV to suggest this theory, and was very happy to declare the whole thing a hoax, which obviously enraged the housemates, who said, seemed to be quite happy themselves to beat the man up if they ever saw him again, clearly offended by the pleasure he was taking and calling them liars, and suggesting they would
Starting point is 00:38:12 endanger not just a child, but one another, just to make a haunted house hoax. Simon Potter apparently then complained that he was not allowed to visit the house after making these statements and didn't understand why. During their stay at the house, the investigators met another journalist who had come to investigate the property. Much like many others, he came in convinced the whole thing was a hoax, but wanting to get the resident side of the story, not just the Channel 7 version. But by the time he left, he was a firm believer, saying, it really is happening, isn't it?
Starting point is 00:38:50 Again during this time, stones, knives, and even a pair of scissors were launched around rooms totally unexpectedly. Numerous of these incidents occurred when others were out of the house and the few people that were there were within eye line of the investigators and journalist. There seemed to be no way they could be fake in this. And what's more if the fan theory were to be true? Items seemed to fall as comments were made about the haunting,
Starting point is 00:39:18 almost in response to them. Over the course of the few-month period, numerous priests, friends of the residents, investigators, and reporters all claimed to witness these events. Most went in with the attention of debunking a nonsense story that these people were conjuring up and almost all came out believing what they were experiencing to be true.
Starting point is 00:39:42 Years later in 2011, Healy and Cropper actually got to interview Greg Quayle. He backed up his claim that Kirsty had confessed to faking it and that she said she would even do an interview later down the line to explain why and how, but she never did. However, despite this, he apparently thinks there was something going on in the home. He believes that Kirsty had in fact faked that one incident. But they witnessed so much that they couldn't explain
Starting point is 00:40:11 and that he believes is unexplainable. But when Kirsty faked that moment, the pressure from his bosses came down on him. He had no choice but to call her out for it. In an attempt seemingly to give the camera crew what they had so desperately wanted to capture organically. She had ruined the credibility of the investigation. With Quail saying,
Starting point is 00:40:34 Crazy shit happened. We had all that stuff, but that woman undid everything. We busted her on tape cheating. With that one incident, she's blown the whole story. Jared the cameraman who captured the plastic pot incident still believes that it wasn't Kirsty, stating that stuff was flying everywhere that night, and that he doesn't believe that from the angle she was standing behind him,
Starting point is 00:40:58 she could have thrown the pot where it landed. After inviting Healy and Cropper into the home for those few days, the residents seemingly decided that talking about what they were experiencing wasn't worth it. People were seeing them as a joke after the television show, and no one seemed to be able to stop what was happening. So they would simply grin and bear it, continuing to live with the phenomenon, without inviting more people into their home who would just call them liars. Eventually, the couples decided to move out of the property and go their separate ways.
Starting point is 00:41:36 Both have claimed that since leaving the house, they have not experienced any further strange activity. So what really happened in Humpty Do? The most common theory that is often spouted about poltergeist is that they are not exactly ghosts. Instead, many believe they are manifestations of some sort of psychic ability that someone in the home is causing. Oftentimes, though, that person is completely unaware that they are the source of the phenomenon that is taking place. If this were true, could it have been Kirsty, the person who seemed to be present the most when this activity was taking place? Or could it have been mirth? A man who was described as full of anger by everyone that interacted with him.
Starting point is 00:42:35 A man dealing with the brutal death of a close friend, that feels like a lot of negative energy to be carrying around, if you believe such a thing is possible. There was also the strange incident with the Aboriginal men digging something up from the property. Leading to speculation that whatever they were looking for was the source of this strange activity. Of course, there is also the idea that this was in fact the spirit of their deceased friend Troy. But the housemates all refused to believe this. not understanding that if this was actually their friend, why he would want to be terrorising them in this manner. It's also hard to dismiss the footage of the plastic pot flying with Kirsty's arm moving,
Starting point is 00:43:17 and the fact that even with attempting to do so for many, many hours, no one was able to capture footage of the activity on camera, meaning it is still very possible that so many people were in fact tricked by a very clever prank being pulled by the housemates. But could it have not been about the housemates themselves at all? Could it have been the house itself? Healy and Cropper's chapter on The Haunting does have one final nugget of information about the home. The woman by the name of Irene Winters was tasked with cleaning the house before the residents moved in.
Starting point is 00:43:57 She described the place as having a horrible feeling throughout. She would frequently report that it felt unnaturally cold despite the warm Australian summer sun beaming in. Doors would open and close on their own, and one day she arrived at the property to let a tradesman in to fix the place up. He stayed in the house for only a few minutes, before practically running out of the place terrified, with no explanation. Another person who had lived in the property as a child had reported the same phenomenon of doors opening and closing on their own. There was also the the strange fact that the house was available to rent at all. The owners of the property have never
Starting point is 00:44:38 spoken publicly about the events that took place there. But the residents always thought it was strange, but the family who owned it chose to live in a tiny tin building further down the road, with their five children, rather than the spacious home they also owned, with plenty of space for their family. Why didn't they want to stay in that house in Humpty Do? That's all for this entry into the tape library. I've got a little request for you all that made it this far into the episode. I often see comments where people complain that the same topics get covered on a lot of paranormal mystery channels. However, as a creator, I find that covering more well-known cases tends to perform better.
Starting point is 00:45:23 As far as I can tell from a brief search, no other large horror channels have covered this case. So if you enjoyed hearing this more obscure story, then please click like and leave me your thoughts about the case in the comments and maybe even share this video with others. I love covering these lesser-known stories and the more successful they are, the more of them I can include in the tape library. I'll be back very soon with some more creepy real-life horror stories. So until next time, there's nothing left to do but thank the wonderful supporters who keep the lights on at the tape library archive.
