The Tape Library - Archive of the Paranormal & the Unexplained - The Strange Mystery of the Kera Object
Episode Date: September 3, 2026In 1972, a group of children playing in a field in Kōchi, Japan, discovered something they could not explain. It was a small metallic object, unlike anything they had seen before. But according to t...he strange accounts that followed, this was only the beginning. The object appeared and disappeared under mysterious circumstances. It was taken away from the field, only to seemingly return. Witnesses described strange lights and an encounter that would become one of Japan's most unusual UFO mysteries. More than fifty years later, the Kera Incident remains difficult to explain. Was it an elaborate hoax? A forgotten piece of technology? Or did the children of Kera really encounter something beyond explanation? Tonight, we explore one of the strangest and most obscure UFO cases in Japanese history. You are interested in the unknown, the mysterious.
the unexplainable, that is why you are here.
And now for the first time, we are bringing to you the full story of what happened on that fateful day.
This place is haunted.
That's what was running through the minds of at least a couple of the four boys who were standing in the rice field that evening.
People rarely came to this field at night.
Local said it was haunted by a Shibbatan, a Japanese.
folk monster resembling a small hairy child but that wasn't what the group were out looking for that night
they had been there for the better part of an hour just waiting waiting to see if what their
friend had come running into town to tell them was actually true sure enough they saw it a
strange object dancing around in the sky above the field
There had always been rumours about this particular field, strange sightings at night, creepy urban legends,
but seeing something like this in person blew their minds. It was around 60 feet away from them at this time,
and moving across the air in such an erratic manner that at first glance it just resembled a bat hunting for insects.
But this was no bat.
Then, as the fading sun finally fell behind the mountains, something strange happened.
The object lit up. It began to emanate a kind of pulsing, multi-coloured light.
It's a fireball, one boy excitedly exclaimed.
No, said another.
It's an onybi. In Japanese folklore,
There are stories of strange ghostly light known as Onubai, which roughly translates as demon fire.
These mysterious flames are said to be the spirits of the dead, rising from the corpses of humans and animals.
But some legends tell a darker story, that they are the spirits of people consumed by resentment,
returning to the world in the form of fire. At least some of them believe,
that what they were witnessing was someone's spirit lost in the rice field.
But then the object seemed to drop down onto the ground.
The boys slowly began to approach where they thought it had fallen and they found it, still
flickering its lights on and off.
But now it seemed to be just a slightly dim, silvery light.
The flashlight they were carrying lit it up and one of the boys,
now only three feet away, reached out to touch it.
As soon as he did, a loud popping sound was heard,
and a bright blue light shot out of the tiny metallic object that lay on the ground.
The sound was so loud that it hurt their ears and sent them jumping back.
This was enough for the teenage boys.
Fear penetrated their minds,
and they ran as fast as they could to get away from this thing.
get away from this thing. But curiosity got the better of them. And soon they would go hunting
for it again, beginning one of the strangest mysteries in the history of Japan. This is a story I'd never
heard until recently, but it really is a fun one. It almost plays out like a forgotten early
Steven Spielberg film. But was this really something unexplainable? A total hoax? Or,
something in between. Well, that's what we're going to try to find out. Get yourself a warm drink,
dim the lights and get comfortable because it's time to kick off a brand new season of the unexplained.
This is the strange mystery of the Kira incident. Welcome to the tape library.
It's been a little while so I thought I'd quickly explain my approach to any new people that might have stumbled on this.
episode. I break these explorations into unusual cases into two sections. First I tell the story
as close to how it was originally reported as possible. Then I try to break down the various theories
surrounding the events, both from a skeptical and a more paranormal angle. With this one,
very few English language versions of the events exist, and even the Japanese version
seem to vary in some key details. We'll talk about that a little later, but
But just keep in mind that there isn't a singular perfect retelling of this case out there seemingly.
I have tried my best to consolidate the various accounts into something easy to follow.
With that out of the way, let's begin tonight's story.
This incident took place in the late summer of 1972, in the Kira era of Koichi City in Japan.
A 13-year-old schoolboy named Michio Seale was on his way to his way to be.
was on his way home late one afternoon as he passed by a rice field close to his home.
The sun was just beginning to set, slowly beginning to drop behind the mountains,
bathing the fields in a warm dusk glow, when something caught the boy's eye.
At first he thought it was a bat, something tiny was flying over the field,
zipping about and swooping up and down.
But he paused.
There was something off about it.
He watched a distant dot zipping around
and he thought it was moving rather strangely for a bat.
Admittedly, in the dimming light,
he didn't have the clearest view of it.
But it wasn't like it was flying between different points above the field.
It was as though it were in one place one moment.
And then somewhere totally different than next.
as if it were just disappearing and reappearing in the blink of an eye.
But that couldn't be right.
It was just moving, very fast he thought.
Making sudden unexpected turns and swoops, he stepped into the field
and as he got a little closer, became convinced that the object appeared metallic.
But as he got closer still, a blinding beast.
of light shot out of the object in his direction. The boy was terrified and fled the
scene quickly but he had no intention of this encounter ending there. He rushed
back home and quickly found some of his friends, excitedly telling them all about this
weird metal object he had seen flying around the field. Now their return to the
area is the first of several incidents where the timeline plays out a little different
depending on what source you go with.
But it seems that Michio initially returned with three other boys around 7pm that evening.
His best friend, Yazio Moray, Yazio's older brother, Hiroshi, and Hiroshi's friend, Kai Ojima.
The field was right by the brother's house, and with some level of skepticism from the older boys,
they headed over to try and see what Michio was talking about.
They were there for about an hour, when Michio suddenly shouted out with excitement, pointing out across the now darkened field.
The other boys looked, and sure enough there was something flying over the field, with strange lights flashing on and off as it went.
Then the light moved down towards the field, disappearing some 400 metres away.
It appeared.
it had landed. The boys approached a tiny metallic object, but as Hiroshi reached out to touch
it, the colours of the lights suddenly changed, shooting out a flash of light and an ear-piercing
sound that scared the boys away. They plucked up the courage to return around 30 minutes
later, but there was no sign of the object. Many accusations.
have been made, that this incident could be a hoax, which we will discuss later.
But what is interesting is that at least for this first encounter, it seems the boys were not alone.
A group of elementary schoolchildren who were playing in another nearby Ricefield reported
a small orange glowing object moving across the sky, as did various other people in the area.
Around 20 different witnesses all claimed to see something that night on the 25th of August.
At the time there wasn't really a unified theory of what something like this was, at least
in the witness's minds.
As I stated earlier, many jumped to the conclusion that it was some kind of spirit, but as
time went on, this incident would come on to be regarded as one of Japan's first major UFO sightings.
Not to say there weren't others before, but it was this one that seemed to kick off something of a trend of these reports being made in the 1970s.
But for the teenagers, the story was only just beginning.
The next day the boys returned to the field, this time accompanied by a fifth companion named Sadio Fujiwara.
They searched the field for the object but couldn't see it this time.
What they did find, however, was a small piece of ground where the vegetation had been flattened,
and the soil's colour had changed.
It seemed to roughly match where they had seen the objects on the ground the night before.
The circular patch was only about eight inches across, with four small dents in a square shape
in the centre of the circle.
The boys were now very excited, and each night they would return to the field.
in the hope of spotting it again. The parents were completely oblivious to the fact that the
children were out hunting a tiny UFO, but for several days they were left disappointed.
That was until the following week when on September 2nd, the five boys returned to the
rice field and once again spotted a small glowing object. It was getting late and they were all but
ready to give up before they saw it, floating just around three feet above the grass, swaying
from side to side. It seemed to have a flickering light on it once again, and it appeared to be rotating.
When it began to move in their direction, fear once again got the better of them, and they scattered
in different directions. It seemed silly that they kept
kept looking for this thing, despite clearly being terrified of it.
But to me it feels like a very natural teenage boy reaction, all psyching each other up to
search for this object, and then their nerves getting the better of them, when actually
faced with something truly unknown.
Three of the boys decided to return with a camera, but unfortunately they did not have much
experience with using it.
The first night they returned, they found nothing.
But then on September 4th, around 9.30pm, it was spotted again, this time on the ground
in the rice field, just a missing and much dimmer glow than before.
This made them wonder if it had been there all the other times, but just on the ground hiding
amongst the grass.
A new member of the group, Toshiaki Kazuka, was the boy who had brought along a camera.
He went to go and take a photograph, but as the flashbulb went off, the object reacted instantly,
shooting up about five feet into the air in an instant, leaving the boys to scatter, and providing
us with a pretty terrible photograph as evidence of their encounter.
They did attempt to get photographs several other times as well, but with little luck.
They speculated that the object was somehow affecting the
camera but upon reading the accounts it sounds more likely to be user error on the part of the boys
especially when it came to loading the film into it now the events of that first week are pretty
consistent across all retellings of the story but it's from this point on that things become a
little more confused so please forgive me as i try to put together a timeline of what took place
after this sighting but i think this is where the story really takes a fun term that makes
it so different to many other UFO encounters.
It seems that after this, the boy's group kept growing, now totaling nine intrepid UFO hunters.
The group had gone back to the field and once again found the object.
This time, it was on the ground, making no sound and showing no signs of movement.
It just looked like a tiny metallic hat.
on the earth. That was when they decided they would attempt to capture it. Over the prior
weeks the boys had noticed an odd detail. They never saw the object on a rainy day,
so their running theory was that water wasn't good for it. They therefore came up with the
only sensible way to capture a UFO. They would throw a piece of cloth over it, then pour
water onto the cloth. Only once the object was blinded and incapacitated by the water, would
they attempt to grab it. The first two parts of the plan went swimmingly. They threw
the cloth over the top and doused it in water. But then one of the boys, for some reason,
decided to throw a concrete block at the object. The impact made a dull fud, but the object didn't react.
This seemed strange as it had every other time they had tried to approach it.
Believing it was no longer a threat, Kiko approached it and used the hem of his school uniform
to cover his hands as he picked it up, apparently due to fear of radiation.
The object did not react.
They wrapped it in more cloth and took it back to Hiroshi's house.
Once there, the boys inspected it and drew pictures of the object.
They described it as resembling a sombrero, but that it felt like it was maybe made of some kind of cast metal.
At first they believed it had simply been spray painted silver, and that it seemed to be a very man-made object.
But when they touched it, it felt oddly smooth.
It was around 8 inches wide and 4 inches high.
On the bottom were a series of circular grooves and a number of holes in the centre, along with a third.
along with a few etchings.
They weren't super clear,
but the boys believed they represented waves,
a flying object, possibly a bird,
and something that looked like a plant.
They peered through the small holes at the bottom of a magnifying glass
and were convinced they could see small parts resembling the inside of a radio.
When they shook it,
they heard a faint clattering inside.
It seems from their sketches that the boy
The boys attempted to break the thing with a hammer, but without success.
The object didn't even dent.
They then tried to pry the top off of a screwdriver, but it wouldn't budge.
It seemed impossible to open.
Even taking a saw to the object seemed to do nothing.
Fire didn't have an effect.
But one of the boys' mothers stepped in when they attempted to see what would happen if they put
it in a microwave.
As the evening drew to a close, Hiroshi wrapped it up and placed it in his backpack.
The other boys all headed home.
But the following day, the Hiroshi arrived to meet the other boys with a puzzling development.
The object had vanished.
It just wasn't in the bag when he woke up.
That night they found it again, resting on the ground at the rice field.
They grabbed it again and when they shook it this time it didn't make a rattling sound.
Something had changed.
The experiments continued.
They filled it with water through the small holes and as they did, they claimed that it began
to make a strange sound they hadn't heard before, like the buzzing of a cicada.
And then it appeared to glow from within.
flashing on and off. Shortly after this, the holes seemed to be filled with a substance
they did not recognise, a kind of cotton-like goo that made it impossible to see inside. They
finally managed to lift a square lid on the bottom slightly after pulling it apart with wire
and caught a glimpse at the parts inside, but then it suddenly slammed shut again and they
couldn't get back into it. Frustrated.
but not wanting it to go missing again.
Two of the boys agreed to cover it in cushions and sit on top of it when the others had to leave.
They did just this, lying on top of the objects reading comics.
But when the others returned, the object was gone.
This caused a huge argument between the group, who began to distrust one another, convinced
they were trying to keep the objects for themselves.
or were playing some kind of prank.
The object was found again, though this time not in the rice field, but in a ditch outside Morrie's house.
They decided to mark it, first with some silver enamel and then with a pen.
They wanted to be sure that if it disappeared again, it was the same object that they kept finding.
And sure enough, it did vanish, but was once again.
just found lying on the ground of the rice field. The whole incident was getting stranger and stranger.
One evening, Yasio Fujimoto's father, Mutsio, decided to step in. He had been growing increasingly
concerned about the frequent nights out the boys were partaking in and demanded to know what
was going on. When his son told him he wasn't quite sure what to make of it all.
Mutsio was the director for the Centre for Science Education in Kochi, and obviously didn't
take tales of disappearing flying objects, all too seriously.
The boys were convinced it was some kind of a remote control surveillance device.
But Mutsio looked it over, and it looked a lot like a cast iron ashtray to him.
But there were some strange details to it.
Sure enough it seemed to have some kind of electrical components inside, and it was virtually
impossible to open when he tried.
Still, Mutsio was rather dismissive, something he claimed he regretted later, wishing he had
taken the time to study the object more seriously.
The object continued to disappear, and more often than not, reappear in the rice field.
The boys all agreed they would take turns looking after it.
One day, they were out on a bike ride, so they placed it in a backpack, first tying it up inside a plastic bag that they had filled with water before tying it shut, then attaching a string to the wrist of one of the boys, and the other to the objects in the bag.
As they rode, the boy with the backpack suddenly slammed on the brakes, when he felt his bag grow lighter.
They all stopped and opened the bag.
The plastic bag was still tied shut.
But when they opened it, sure enough the object was gone.
The object was captured again for a fifth and final time, on September 22nd.
When they decided to show it to their science teacher, they readied their bikes and decided to take it straight to the school.
Again they went along with a plan of storing it in a water field.
bag, tying it shut, placing it in a backpack and tying a string to the wrist of one of the
boys.
This time, Yasuo, they were still convinced that Walter would incapacitate it.
Although there seemed to be little evidence to suggest this so far.
This time as they rode their bikes, Yasio's wrist was tugged with such a force that he fell
off the bike.
they rushed to look inside the bag, it was gone.
There were no holes, no weight seemingly could have got out.
It was just... gone.
They searched and searched in the coming weeks, but they never did see the object again.
They did attempt to talk to various adults about their discovery, but no one seemed to take
the boys seriously.
Especially now they no longer even had the ability to do.
to show the object to them. However, when astronomers to Samo Seki and Kouichi
became aware of the boy's story, they seemed to be very intrigued. Both were
amateur astronomers, but Siki in particular was quite a well-respected individual in
the field and had discovered several comets over the years. While skeptical at first, the
two men after conducting an investigation became more open to the idea that the boys might have
really discovered something strange. They also delved into the local legends of the area,
including the belief that the field was the home of a Shibbatan, a creature from folklore
that is said to resemble a small half-man, half-monkey creature, that is prone to stealing
cucumbers and challenging passers-by to a sumo match.
They questioned how a hoax could be pulled off and wondered if the boys had simply seen the reflection of some birds in the filled shallow waters.
They also interviewed the parents and children.
They appeared to be the only adults who at least seemed open to the belief that this wasn't simply a prank, conjured up by a group of teenagers.
And even if they weren't fully convinced, Siki published a story in a book of a book.
the following year. As a result of this and some limited TV coverage, the story took on a
different turn in the local community. The boys who had previously been treated as pranksters and
troublemakers, trying to stir up a ridiculous story, were slowly taken more seriously. As the years
passed, they stuck to their stories, and most of the discrepancies have reportedly come from the
various writers who have covered the case rather than directly from the boys themselves.
But while it became fairly well known in Japan, over time it gradually faded into obscurity,
and the boys disappeared from the public eye.
This changed in 2004 when UFO comics covered the story, leading to the reopening of an
investigation into the case by the Japan Space Phenomena Society.
which led to the uncovering of another story that seemed to suggest that the boys were not alone.
Around an hour's drive west of Kira, you will find the village of Agawa.
There it was discovered that a young girl reported a strange story, just a few years after the Kira incident.
The girl had gone outside her home to look for her pet cat, when she noticed the small object
floating in the sky that was glowing yellow. She walked out into the street to get a better
look at it. The object moved away from the street and towards the nearby tree line. The girl followed.
She said it looked like the object hit one of the trees and floated silently to the ground in
front of her. As she approached it though, it began to emit her hissing sound, not unlike
her cicadas.
She said it looked much like a silver hat, around seven inches in diameter.
Cauchously she bent over to touch it and claimed it was covered in a kind of slimy substance.
She couldn't say why exactly, but at that exact moment she was overcome with a sudden wave of fear.
She turned and ran home.
As she looked back, she noticed it had begun to glow yellow again.
It then shot up into the sky at an incredible speed and disappeared from her view.
When the investigation was reopened in 2007, the girl, now in her 40s, stood by her story.
Maybe there really was something strange happening in this area of the country in the 1970s.

You're richer than you think.
So what really happened?
Generally, I try to present these sections from a very neutral perspective,
but I may come down slightly harder on one side in this case.
So if you just want to enjoy the story and not think too hard about reality,
this is your warning to stop the episode here.
To get into the full attempts to debunk this story could be an episode all in itself.
I'll be posting a link to a five-part blog post.
that I think gives one of the most detailed recountings of this case, along with the many
sceptical arguments that go along with it.
But for the purpose of this episode, I'll be tackling what I think are the more convincing
arguments.
The main one being, this was just a hoax.
But even what should be a simple explanation is messy, to say the least.
One of the local school teachers claimed that years later, that one of the boys,
had told them it was a prank. And it is believed in some circles that the object itself was
nothing more than a painted ashtray, with several similar designs having been found that seemed
to match the craft. This began with a statement made by the father of one of the boys, who gave the object
to cursory glance and said it resembled one, but really only became a more concrete explanation
in recent years, and some of the images online of similar ash trays do really seem to match the object,
including examples with similar markings on the bottom.
This is one of those cases that sounds fascinating on paper, but when you start looking at the
photographs, it all feels a little silly. I mean, look at this thing.
However, there is a slight issue with this too, because what
What is often circulated online as photographs of the killer object are actually from a documentary
on the subject that featured a few of the boys playing themselves.
With this in mind, the more open believers state that, well, of course it looks fake,
because the widely circulated photographs are fake.
This was a low-budget TV documentary.
there's a very high chance they literally did make the replica from an ash tray,
although the boys' sketches of the object does match up very well.
But if it was a hoax, you then have to start trying to untangle who was in the know and who wasn't,
because some of the boys seem to be very, very convinced that this was real,
suggesting that maybe not all of them were in on it.
A select group of three of the boys seemed to be at the centre of most of the random disappearances,
suggesting that they were the ones pushing this joke forward,
and dragging in some of their more gullible friends for the ride.
Then you could also run with the idea that maybe the boys weren't really in on it at all,
that there was someone flying some kind of remote control device around a field,
and it was left for the boys to find,
some unknown person having a bit of fun with the locals in an area with a reputation for the strange and spooky.
If we want to go down the less sceptical route and take the events at face value,
then the whole thing just seems weird.
Nothing the object does seems to really make sense.
Some speculate that this was a surveillance craft that had been damaged and was malfunctioning,
explaining its erratic behaviour.
Some believed that it was literally a tiny alien life form inside, that the boys inadvertently killed during their experiments, possibly explaining the strange substance that leaked out of it.
This idea of tiny aliens has popped up a few times over the years.
My mind instantly jumped to the Dade City flower story that we spoke about before.
But the website Mysterious Universe makes the connection to the supposed micro-terrain
invasion of Malaysia that was reported in the same decade.
Maybe a topic we can cover in a future episode.
The late 2000s investigators stated that they believed this wasn't an alien life form at all,
but was actually an interdimensional vehicle that had lost its way after ending up in our reality.
There are so many fun, wild and wacky rooching go-down, but the fact remains that even if we discount the
replica from the documentary. The boys drawings do seem to resemble one of the cast iron
ash traits that were being made at the time. However, I think it's worth pointing out that
there is a pretty clear breaking point in this story that I haven't seen many others discuss.
This case really is a game of two halves. You have the initial sightings, apparently seen by
others outside of the group of boys and the following evening spent trying to see a
again. While they do get fairly close to the object, we only get more detailed descriptions
after the capture. Then you have the second half, which is the actual capture and subsequent
vanishing acts that the object keeps pulling off. What if there is some truth to part of this story,
but it became a source of mischief for some of the boys involved? One of the younger boys is running
around claiming to see a mini UFO. Who's to say that the older boys didn't decide to have
a little fun and plant a fake UFO in the field? When they do come to capture it, the behavior
of the object changes, it doesn't fly anymore, it doesn't flash the lights in the same way. Beyond
the hissing sound there is very little unusual activity reported but then it keeps
going missing and ending up in the same place. It doesn't seem a stretch to suggest that a few
of the boys were simply stealing it back and placing it in the field. So if this is the case,
we have to ask ourselves. What was the strange object that was spotted on those first few evenings?
Was the later story of the young girl in another village, actually connected? And one final
point I'd forgotten about. If the object in the second half of the story was simply an ashtray,
they had been decorated to look like a UFO, why did? One of the boys' mothers
report seeing a strange glow one evening coming from her son's backpack. A detail none of the
boys noticed. A detail only seen by someone who, at the time, had no idea what was going on.
What we have here is a story muddied by time, but what if there really was something out there in that field, on that summer night in Japan, a cucumber stealing demon, the spirit of a departed soul, a tiny lost alien, or something else entirely?
That is something we may never truly know.
That's all for this entry into the tape library.
As many of you know I took a short break over August, but I'm back to it now.
I have a whole host of dark and scary topics to bring you as the night's drawing quicker
in the coming months.
But I really wanted to kick off this season of stories with something fun, and I wanted to cover
Kira for a while.
Initially I did what many people do.
Saw the photos and thought, and this was a waste of time.
But the more I got into it, the more wonderfully weird and entertaining I found it.
If you've been a long-time listener, you know I'm very rarely drawn to UFO stories, unless they
have some kind of weirdness associated with them.
In this case had weirdness by the bucketful.
So what do you think?
A simple hoax, an alien encounter, misidentified object, or something else entirely.
As always, please do let me know in the comments any theories you might.
have, have fun with it, the more wild and out there ideas are always the best conversation
starters.
In terms of sources, I usually recommend a good book if you want to delve into a topic more,
but in this case I had to piece this together from a bunch of different sources online.
Mysterious Universe seems to be one of the first places this story was reported in detail
in English language.
There is also a great two-parter by the podcast Astonishing Legends.
I'm a big fan of and is well worth checking out.
I'll include them and a couple of other sources in the description.
But I think the best detailed retelling of all aspects of this case is a five-part blog series
that I'll also provide down there if you want to delve deeper.
That one seems to mostly take its information directly from Japanese language sources,
and while those sources still seem to contradict each other, it's mostly small details about which dates
certain things happened on, or which specific child did what, which I don't think really
impacts the wider story too much. Getting back up and running now with the show, so I should
be back with you all with new deep dive in a couple of weeks time, and if it hasn't already by the time
of publishing this, my second show Night Drive Paranormal should be returning to. So if you don't
want to miss out, please like, subscribe, follow, hype, all those good things that tell whatever
platform you are on that you want to see more of this. Until next time my friends, pleasant dreams.
I'm fully aware this show is not everyone's cup of tea. It's weird, it's slow-paced, and at times
it fills at odds with a lot of what the algorithms like to push out. So I'm forever grateful for my
supporters on Patreon, who allow me to basically just create the show I want to make,
and not worry too much about what YouTube and the like want to promote. So if you want to do,
join us over there, the link can be found in the description. Even if you can't afford to donate
money, you can still sign up for free and join the community. I usually share news there before I do
anywhere else and there are some fun conversations on occasion. So let's give those supporters their
credits now. First up our tape library archivist, Dina Compton, Spitson Corpus Satchel, Sapphire,

credits from scratch for this episode, and the members list on Patreon can be an utter mess sometimes.
So if your credit is missing or the wrong name was read out, please do drop me a direct message
on Patreon and I can get it sorted for the next episode. But thank you to all of them, all my members
on YouTube as well, and to you for listening right to the very end of the episode. If you were
one of the few who did, comment below, Cucumber Steeler, to let me know.
Much love to you all.
