Howdy folks, today is Tuesday, December 10, and you're listening to the Texans Daily Rundown.
I'm the Texans Assistant Editor Rob Lausches, and here is the rundown of today's news in Texas politics.
First up, the city of Ovilla, a town of nearly 5,000 that sits in both Dallas and Ellis counties, passed an ordinance outlawing abortion
within its city limits by a vote of 4 to 1 on Monday, December 9th. Ovilla is now the 53rd
sanctuary city for the unborn in Texas, according to Mark Lee Dixon, the founder of the Sanctuary
Cities for the Unborn Initiative. The ordinance passed by Ovilla has six main provisions, all of
which are enforced through private lawsuits.
It not only prohibits the performance of elective abortion within city limits, but also prohibits the aiding and abetting of such procedures.
It also bans abortion-inducing drugs within the city. trafficking, transporting persons through Ovilla for an elective abortion, the performance of an
elective abortion upon residents of Ovilla no matter where it takes place, criminal organizations
that violate the abortion laws of the state, and the disposal of fetal remains after an elective
abortion within the city. In other news, after Donald Trump flipped his county for the first
time in a century, longtime Democratic Webb County Judge
Tano Tijerina has announced he is switching parties to the Republicans, saying that the
Democrats left him and the people of South Texas behind. He said, quote, my decision to switch
parties wasn't made lightly. For years, I've watched the National Democrat Party drift further
left, embracing policies that don't reflect the values of our community.
President-elect Donald Trump made history in Tijerina's district during the November election,
winning Webb County's presidential vote, the first Republican president to claim victory there in a century.
Tijerina was first elected as Webb County judge as a Democrat in 2015 and won his third term in 2023. His seat will be up
for re-election in 2026. Last but not least, thousands of bills have been filed ahead of the
89th legislative session spanning the spectrum of political issues, and one bill focused on
school security is proposing the use of drones for campus safety. Representative Ryan Guillen has introduced House
Bill 62, which covers the presence of armed security officers at public schools and specifies
the permissible uses of the school safety allotment, including the establishment of a
mental health allotment under the Foundation School Program. The bill also outlines enhanced
school safety and security measures, such as the utilization of drones.
Texas has already passed a bevy of bills into law to enhance security measures on school campuses,
including the school marshal program that allows for armed security officers.
H.B. 62 would allow the requirement to be met via a, quote, remote human-operated aerial device.
Thanks for listening.
