Starting point is 00:00:00 Howdy folks, today is Monday, July 7th and you're listening to the Texans Daily Rundown. I'm the Texans Assistant Editor Rob Lauschis and here is the rundown of today's news in Texas politics. First up, Camp Mystic, the girls summer camp in Kerrville heavily affected by the holiday weekends flash flooding, announced the loss of 27 campers and counselors in a statement on their website. Dozens of people in nearby campsites for the three-day weekend were swept away by the current. County including the Camp Mystic facilities, seven in Travis County, three in Burnet County, two in Williamson County, and one in Tom Green County. As of Sunday evening, there are still ten campers and one counselor from Camp Mystic
Starting point is 00:00:55 unaccounted for. Nearly 900 people have been rescued from the disaster over the past few days since a historic amount of rain fell on the hill country. As the weekend went on, flooding swept through Georgetown and other parts of the region. Rescue operations are still underway, and state officials said on Sunday they'll start recovery operations in tandem with the continued search for missing individuals. Next, although the flooding was 250 miles away, North Texans are joining in the grief and hope to help bring relief to some of the victims and survivors of the Central Texas floods,
Starting point is 00:01:30 including families from North Texas who lost loved ones. Several cities around the Dallas-Fort Worth area deployed some of their professionals to help in the rescue and recovery efforts. Fort Worth sent 17 firefighters to join Texas Task Force One and Texas Task Force Two. Mayor Matty Parker wrote on X, quote,
Starting point is 00:01:51 We have Fort Worth families impacted specifically by missing girls at Camp Mystic, praying for our first responders, end quote. The city also activated a family assistance hotline at 817-392-5891. The City of Denton sent a six-man crew and boat to join the Texas Swiftwater Task Force. The City of Arlington deployed four members of the Arlington Fire Department on Saturday as part of a Texas Intrastate Fire Mutual Aid System team to assist first responders in the area. The Flower Mound Fire Department sent four members and an engine to assist in Kerrville
Starting point is 00:02:29 on Sunday. Dallas Fire Rescue sent five members of its water squad and a squad leader to Kerrville to assist in the efforts. Mayor Eric Johnson said, quote, I am in awe of all the first responders working under dangerous conditions to reunite families and loved ones, and I am praying for of all the first responders working under dangerous conditions to reunite families and loved ones, and I am praying for everyone's safety." Bedford confirmed that four of its firefighters joined the rescue efforts in Kerrville. Businesses located in North Texas are also reaching out to help victims and support survivors.

Just before 11pm on July 4th, the Alvarado Police Department responded to a call regarding a suspicious person near US Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Prairieland Detention Facility. Upon arrival, an officer attempted to engage a person who appeared to be armed, but was then struck by at least one bullet in the neck after multiple suspects opened fire. The officer was airlifted to a Fort Worth hospital where he was treated and released. With assistance from the Johnston County Sheriff's Office, Alvarado police arrested eight suspects, several of them armed and some wearing body armor.
Starting point is 00:03:37 Prior to the shooting, a federal law enforcement source told CBS News that more than a dozen masked individuals dressed in black arrived at the ICE facility, set off fireworks, and vandalized cars and parking lot security cameras. Last, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit has ruled against Senate Bill 4, a Texas bill passed in 2023 that would have made illegal entry into the U.S. estate crime, and affirmed a lower court injunction that blocked the law from going into effect. Chief Judge Priscilla Richmond stated in the 2-1 opinion that, quote, there are significant
Starting point is 00:04:12 complexities in determining an alien's immigration status. SB4 runs roughshod over them, end quote. Richmond added that SB4 would cause international friction, stating further that the, quote, enforcement of SB4 also risks taking the United States out of compliance with its treaty obligations, end quote. SB4 has faced numerous legal hurdles since its enactment in 2023 and has been blocked from enforcement by multiple levels of the judiciary. The law has been challenged all the way up to the Supreme Court of the United States, which left an injunction in place. Thanks for listening.
