Howdy folks, today is Wednesday, March 4th, and you're listening to The Texans Daily Rundown.
I'm the Texans managing editor Rob Lauchess, and here's the rundown of today's news in Texas politics.
First up, yesterday March 3rd was primary election day, where races ranging from U.S. Senate at the top of the ticket to state legislative races were settled, or pushed to a runoff between the two highest vote getters.
The runoff elections are scheduled for May 26th.
Keep following the Texan for updates to see who will win their party's nominations for the November
general election. Visit the Texan. News to read all about the results of the biggest primaries in Texas.
Next, incumbent U.S. Senator John Cornyn and Challenger Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton are headed
to a runoff election in May to determine which of them will be the Republican nominee in the
U.S. Senate race come November after wading out Congressman Wesley Hunt. Cornyn earned 43 percent,
of the vote while Paxton earned 40% on Tuesday night. Hunt collected about 13%. President Donald Trump
did not issue a much-desired endorsement before the primary election, saying he liked all three
candidates, but has suggested in prior comments that the race has a long ways to go, potentially
indicating a runoff endorsement. He confirmed on Wednesday that he will be issuing an endorsement
of either Cornyn or Paxton, and will call on the other to drop out in order to avoid a runoff.
State Representative James Talariko won the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate in Texas,
garnering 53% of the vote on Tuesday night against Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett.
Talariko was in the lead by Wednesday morning with an estimated 90% of votes accounted for.
He will now go on to face either Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton or U.S. Senator John Cornyn
in the November 26th general election.
The Democratic race remained up in the air on Tuesday night after reports circulated,
that large numbers of voters in Dallas County were showing up to the wrong voting locations
due to requirements that local residents cast their votes in their precincts. In response,
a Dallas County judge extended voting hours until 9 p.m. per the request of both Crockett and
Tala Rico. Paxton then filed a motion with the Texas Supreme Court to halt voting and require any
such votes cast after the originally scheduled end time of 7 p.m. to be separated, which was granted to him.
Also, U.S. Representative Chip Roy and State Senator Mays Middleton will begin campaigning anew
to become the next Texas Attorney General after neither captured enough votes to avoid a runoff in Tuesday's
Republican primary election. According to unofficial election results, as of 10 p.m. Tuesday night,
Middleton took 41% of the vote in the four-way primary, while Roy carried 31%.
Texas Senator Joan Huffman and former U.S. Assistant Attorney General Aaron Wrights, each captured
less than 20%. Abbott did not endorse in the race, but all four candidates touted high-profile support.
U.S. Senators Ted Cruz, Mike Lee, and Rand Paul endorsed Roy, along with 14 current and former U.S. House
members. Middleton received endorsements from U.S. representatives Brian Babin, Lance Gooden, and Randy Weber.
He was also endorsed by nearly 50 members of the Texas legislature.
President Donald Trump endorsed Middleton in his 22 Republican, Republican, and he was also endorsed.
primary election for state Senate District 11, but Trump did not endorse in this year's race for
state attorney general. Last but not least, state Senator Nathan Johnson and former Galveston Mayor
Joe Jaworsky will head to a Democratic primary runoff for Texas Attorney General after
neither reached the 50% margin needed to win the primary outright on Tuesday. According to unofficial
election results, Johnson led with 48% of the vote, while Jaworski trailed at 27% and former federal
Bureau of Investigation Agent Tony Box followed closely with 25%. In the run-up to the election,
both Johnson and Jaworsky often took aim at Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and the Republicans
running for the open seat and vowed to reform the office of the Attorney General. Thanks for listening.
