that they go on from starting a blog
and what that looks like as they are building.
It's been really inspiring to be part of Wendy's journey
and I'm excited to share her with you today.
So Wendy, welcome to the podcast.
Thank you.
This is crazy, you guys. I have to say, you kind of are like famous people to me
because I've been listening to you at least weekly for probably two years. So this is kind of crazy.
Well, we are really glad that you decided one day to join us and so we can be part of it
because we're definitely not famous nor are we scary.
We actually really love helping people.
And we are just like all of you who are listening today and Wendy here who is sitting with us
just in this blogging industry and learning each and every day and basically just offering
our help.
So Wendy, let's get started talking about your journey.
When did you decide that you wanted to start a blog?
And was there like an event or an idea or something that kind of came to fruition first
and you're like, okay, I think I might want to start a blog. Like how did that all come
to play?
So it's been a few years, three, four years probably that I have been just unsettled,
unsatisfying as if you will with my role. I'm a marketing director by profession that I still do, which I have been doing
for over 20 years, and I love the work.
I love marketing.
I love that world because it's ever changing.
Like you can never stop growing.
You can never stop changing in the marketing world.
But for the last nine years, I have been a marketing director for a small financial
advising firm, a wealth management firm, great people,
like I adore the people, it's been a great experience, but I
just don't love that world. It's just not exciting to me. And I
think that's really been a stem, you know, the root issue of what I'm just not fulfilled
in what I'm making when I'm promoting.
So by nature, I'm a maker.
I love to make stuff.
I love to make stuff look good.
I always say that's kind of my,
what I do is I make things look good.
That's actually what the people at work say
is that they make them look good.
So it started out as just wanting more of that.
So I started exploring different,
and that in combination with COVID,
when everybody's lives changed
and we started working from home a little bit,
that also sparked something in me that,
well, that would be neat to be able to have
a little bit more flexibility like I used to have.
So I explored lots of different arenas
and virtual assistant, being a virtual assistant was actually
one of the top things I pursued. I invested in a significant amount of money in a course.
I went through the course. I did a ton of work in it. I really, really was putting
attention into how I wanted to roll this out, yet it was just never quite right. And I couldn't
put my finger on what exactly the issue was.
And when I, I mean, so I just, at that point, that was probably three years ago.
I just did a ton of soul searching.
I love, I am a fitness person.
I love to work out and walk.
So I, that's what I would, all I would think about when I would take a walk, when
I would drive, I have almost an hour commute to work and back.
So I've always had a lot of thinking time.
So that's when I started the podcast listening.
And I just gradually kept finding more podcasts, talking about work at home
opportunities and things like that.
And in that soul searching, what I realized is that, like I said, I love what I do.
I love marketing.
I love, so marketing and graphic design are my background.
That's the two things that have come parallel, which isn't always typical
in a marketing role that you get to do that actual graphic design.
But throughout all of my career that those two have emerged because of
the smaller companies I've worked for.
So anyway, in the soul searching, I realized what's really getting to me, I think that's
been unfulfilling is that I have always marketed for somebody else, for somebody else's baby,
somebody else's dream, somebody else's passion.
And that used to be great when you're young and you start out, right?
And you don't want to be in charge.
And I think that just the natural evolution of age and wisdom, I realized, hey, I would really
to make some of these decisions. Like, I would like to be doing this for myself. I would like
to be marketing for something I'm passionate about that I am creating that I get final,
that I am creating that I get final do well and all say in what I am working on. So that is what I realized the VA that was just going to be that same thing over because as a VA
you are working for somebody else. So that once I realized that it was crystal clear that that was
not in fact the route of which I should go. So
then I started exploring some other opportunities and I have done freelance design work over
the years and I phased out of that shortly after I had my kids just because of the obvious
of time. So I didn't know that I really wanted to go into that. I wouldn't be opposed to it, but I would do that.
So that is really where I started to think about blogging and many, many
hindrances along the way, like questioning, can I really do this for one?
Do I like who says I should be an entrepreneur?
That was a huge hurdle thinking, why wouldn't everybody be doing this?
What, what gives me the right to do this? Like what makes me think that I could be, quit my job and start doing this? What gives me the right to do this?
What makes me think that I could maybe quit my job and start doing this?
Why isn't everybody doing that?
So that was a big hurdle.
And then in thinking about that, I realized that over the years,
I have always had a side gig.
I have made jewelry.
I have been involved quite significantly in many, what do you call, MLMs? What is it called?
Like the direct sale?
Like network marketing.
Yeah, yes. So I've been involved and kind of a sucker for those in fact. So I've been
involved in those and that's really, as I got to think about this, the most recent one
that I was involved in for several years, quite successfully actually,
was in the COVID era of years.
And that kind of reassured me that,
okay, maybe I do have that in me.
And that made me realize that was actually really joyful
to me to work on that because I got to make the decisions.
So that's where I narrowed in my focus on the blogging opportunity.
I started thinking, okay, what would I write about?
What do people like to do?
And that's where I started to hone in on the trainings, if you will, of all the podcasts.
I mean, hours and hours and hours and hours and hours a week. I would pour over podcasts to get inspired and ideas and to determine, can I really do this?
So I think that that is something that whether you've been in network marketing or anything
like that, it is kind of that belief or I think it can kind of help you like dip your toe in.
Okay, like I think I have it in me to be an entrepreneur because
I don't think that everybody is made to be an entrepreneur, truthfully. I think that
it's something that it takes a lot of grit and it takes a lot of that like focus and
motivation that sometimes it could be easier to just go to a job and know what you're getting paid and go home
and you know exactly what's expected.
And sometimes being an entrepreneur, all the time,
being an entrepreneur looks very different than that.
It is being very invested in what you're building
and what you're believing in,
but there's so much reward that comes with that.
And I think that when you do some of the things
that you've said that you've done along the way, it was just kind of that like almost social proof to yourself,
but you do have what it takes. Like you gain the skills that you needed from your marketing
job, but you combined it with the other things that you were doing to where then when this
idea came, you're like, okay, maybe I can do this. And so you had a little bit of that
belief built up. It sounds like to me, because I feel do this. And so you had a little bit of that belief built up.
It sounds like to me, because I feel like when we met you,
you knew what you wanted to do.
Like you had made the decision, like I'm starting a blog
and this is what I wanna do.
But I know that there was probably a time period in there
that you had to have wrestled with,
okay, yes, I wanna start a blog,
but what do I want to write about?
So how did you decide that? And you can share a little bit about what your blog's about there,
too. So that was a huge decision-making process. So you're right. My whole background really feeds
well into this because I know the marketing. I've done the video creation as we talked about a
little bit before I've done some podcast creation. So I knew the things that I needed to do to make a blog successful. I knew, but it was what the
heck do I talk about? So I started thinking, you know, what do I do in a day? What do I do at work?
So I have been, I guess what you would call a branding specialist in my roles. So I considered that helping small business owners
build brands, if you will, which is very exciting to me. And then because that's what I've done,
I almost felt like I should keep doing that. Yeah. And then, but I'm like, you know, maybe
not, you know, is that, do I really want to do that? If I'm starting this whole new chapter, do I really want to keep doing what I'm doing? So then I started
thinking about and asking people, you know, what, what am I good at? What do I like to do? What,
and thinking about what do people ask me and decorating is really one of the things that
it was actually unanimously what people said. I loved building our house.
We built our house, crash, it's 15 years ago probably, loved it, which a lot of people
cannot say. I love renovation projects. I love the part of curating, like picking out
the finishes, which is typically what most people don't love.
So that is something that friends and family ask me to come help them do is, hey, what
hardware should I use to go with these cabinets or paint colors?
Paint colors, like I am the paint person in my friend and family network. So that is what I decided to kind of pursue is a home decor style block, which of course
that is way big, way broad.
And in all the training from you lovely ladies, I knew that that was not going to cut it,
that I was going to have to really trim that down in order to be successful, especially
as a new blogger.
I mean this is really shortening the story because it was a lot more thought and process
put into it.
So basically I started thinking about different ways to niche that down.
And so I kind of have come up with two that have evolved along the way, if you will. So my blog, I launched my blog officially last January,
I wanna say, so I'm just a little bit over a year
into the business and it's been quite a year.
I mean, you definitely, which we can go into more,
but let me first answer this question.
So I have narrowed it down to really helping women
take the guesswork out of decorating,
from choosing paint colors or from choosing color palettes, if you will, to finding pieces
you love and pulling that all together in a coastal-inspired space that you'll love.
So the key components there are my target market are essentially what I was 10, 15 years ago, just in this hodgepodge
randomness, I would see something I like, I bought it,
no idea what to do for it. So I had this mashup of all different
styles and things that were trendy or what I thought other
people would like to see. So age and wisdom have helped me define my own style.
So that is what I want to do for others is to help them just find what they love and
find a way to make their space what they love.
And the color thing has really, really stood out to my audience. That is, as I look at my analytics of the
things I do on my blog, on Pinterest, on Instagram, the color selection is really what people are
jumping on and wanting help with. So I like that. I enjoy that. So I plan to kind of further
pursue further niche down on that. And then the other way I've kind of narrowed my focus versus just generalize home decor is
the coastal aspect. So the coastal aspect comes in. I, okay, people, I live in northeast Wisconsin,
about as far from coastal as you can get, but I love water. I'm just a water girl. I love water.
And when you think about coastal, it's really the colors that build that feeling versus
seashells and sand. So that is something that's been really fun is to bring in that coastal
aspect and it's amazing how many people really share that and have also kind of latched onto that concept.
I kind of want to break down what you've said because you've really done a nice job in terms
of niching down. And I know this is an area that really scares people, but you kind of
started with, okay, what can I share about? I have different skills. Maybe I should use
those or maybe I should go with something I have different skills. Maybe I should use those. Or maybe I
should go with something I'm passionate about. And I think you found such a nice blend. I feel
like people struggle with some confidence sometimes when they're sharing about something that's not
necessarily like their training. This isn't what they went to school for, what their job is
necessarily like. If you didn't go to design school, can you really share about decor?
But choosing something that you are passionate about and then
the other piece of it is you recognize that this is what other people are asking you for too and
this is something that we talk about when we walk people through like how do you figure out what to
share about? So I love that you took all of those steps and you continue to take it a step further
and you're just constantly looking at, okay,
what's resonating with people?
How can I get even more specific?
And you're really looking at who is this person that I'm helping and what do they need the
most help with?
So how do you think that has inspired you as far as going into the future and what kind
of content you create.
Do you think that being so specific,
do you feel like it's limiting you
or do you feel like it's opening up the possibilities
for how to create and share and help people in the future?
So two, a couple of things that I wanna kind of touch on.
It's actually done the opposite.
I actually realized I could keep narrowing down more.
Like the more narrow
you get almost, the more it becomes easier to keep going that way. Because I have learned
that I need to be much more focused and intentional on my content that I put out. So for instance,
so this first year of blogging, myging, while I still worked, getting content out
is a struggle.
As you know, time management is difficult when you have, I have two kids that are in
high school very busy and then obviously I have to go to work.
So putting out content in the form of blog posts has been my sole priority.
So keeping that in mind, I was honestly, I really did not have a content plan,
if you will. I really did not plan ahead what I was going to talk about. But then things started
naturally falling into place. And I would write these blog articles and my story, I think I brought
this up in our calls before is that I would is that it would take me so long from start
to finish to write a blog.
And there's a couple reasons why that is.
First of all, because I would try and pack in too much information really.
In many of my blog articles, I would get done writing and I would look at it and ultimately
end up breaking it up into two, three or four articles.
So I really learned to be intentional about exactly what I'm telling them. For example,
I recently did an article on a specific paint shade that I love. It's from Sherwin Williams.
It's called Niebla Azul. And I used it in a laundry room and pantry makeover
that we did several months ago.
So my attempt was to talk specifically
about this paint color, because again, as I told you,
we knew that colors are what people are really, really
enjoying hearing about for me.
So I'm like, that's great.
This is a specific searchable paint color.
This is going to be really helpful.
So in writing this article, I explained, you know, why this paint sheet is the perfect coastal blue
for your cabinetry. I talked about things that were colors to go with it. I would talk about
finishes that would match with it, which led me into basically breaking down all the different
finishes, the flooring, the wallpaper, the hardware, all the things
that I chose in these two renovation projects.
So at the end of that, I'm like, oh my gosh, whoa, whoa, whoa.
That was not what my initial intent was.
My initial intent was simply to provide almost a review on this specific color shade being used per cabinetry.
But in the end, I had this huge full article of all these different finishes and things.
And I'm like, oh my gosh, when do you have to start breaking this up?
And thinking it's okay, it's heck good to write about the same thing, if you will, from
different angles. So what I did ultimately is two or three weeks ago
was the article specifically on that blue shade
and why it works great for cabinetry.
Then actually this week, I published the article
on my laundry room makeover.
So then the laundry room makeover
went into all those finishes, which
touched on the color
of that counter tree, but all the other finishes.
So I've really been teaching myself to think about how when I have a blog topic that I
probably can go up, this can probably somehow I can turn this into multiple articles.
If I think about the different angles to go at it from.
Yeah, especially when you're sharing design and you're sharing about your own home, like if I think about the different angles to go at it from.
Yeah, especially when you're sharing design
and you're sharing about your own home,
like you're gonna feel like,
okay, I only have so many rooms in my house
and I only have so many things I can restyle or redo
every month or every year,
so how am I gonna keep creating new content?
But I think it's a good point.
And like, we've talked about this in travel blogging,
you break up one trip and you can have so many posts. And you're demonstrating that from a home decor and design
aspect that you can break down that information, make it really digestible for people. And,
you know, one project can be multiple posts, so you're not having to like, completely burn
yourself out just to create new content for your website.
Right, and our attention spans are short, right?
We don't need eight different topics in one.
So while you're writing,
it's very difficult to limit it to that
because you feel like you're not truly providing value.
But then when you really step back and think about it,
it's such a better strategy.
And from an SEO perspective too, you can really
zone in on a very particular topic. Yeah. Yeah, I think it serves a lot of different purposes
I'm glad that you have discovered this and then are implementing it

Redefine Success, your blogging checklistub come in and she talked about like repurposing
our content and she talked exactly about this.
And so it's just very fitting that these episodes are back to back.
And one of her recommendations was to write the blog post first and then think about how
you can utilize it in all of these other ways.
And she's one blog post can get you like up to 20 different pieces of content, whether that be Pinterest,
whether that be social media, whether that be something to your email newsletter, things
like that.
So I think that you figured that out, Wendy, in the first year.
And I think that's really valuable for you moving forward.
Because when you do like a home renovation project like that, it is like Jennifer said,
just like travel.
And so you can have this project and as you're doing it,
you can be taking the photos that you know
that you're gonna need for different aspects
of different posts and things like that.
And then it's ready for you.
So you don't have to feel like you have to have
a full calendar in regards to DIY stuff or whatever.
Like you can kind of batch work that
and have your time that you're working on the project itself.
But then you have the time that you're working on the content that's going to support it.
And I think as a blogger, that's something that can help prevent burnout too, when you
understand just how your time needs to be allotted.
Because like you said, you have kids, you had a full time job.
I know some of that has shifted lately with where you're going with the blog.
And so how has that felt for you?
Because you built the blog for the first year,
working full-time,
and I know that you've recently made a shift with that.
So do you wanna share a little bit more
about how that has kind of evolved?
I did, and that kind of like aligns with
taking what I was just talking about a little bit
further.
So when Amy and Jennifer actually reached out to me about this, about potentially being
a podcast guest, which like blew me out of the water for one, it was very, very fantastic
timing because it actually fell in line with within that week or two.
Oh, A, I was accepted to an ad network, which was a huge
deal and B, it was lining up with a review I had coming up at work and some decisions
that have been swirling around in my head about, you know, when do I want to start scaling
back at work and putting some more of that time into the blog.
So that all kind of culminated at the same time.
So yes, I have decided and I've talked to my employers that it's time for me to scale
back my role at work.
And I'm super excited that in a few weeks I will be able to spend that time on building
my business, building Flair Flay yours. And boy, do I have a to-do
list of things to that type of building over the year. So one of the things, like I said,
this kind of aligned with what I was just talking about in that, so we were talking about how
when I write these articles, I come to the end and I realize it's just way too much content.
So another thing I've realized in doing that is I am giving too much information.
And again, I was a new blogger and that's what I had to do.
I had to just get really good, really helpful, really valuable content out on a consistent
basis and focus solely on that.
And I had to remind myself that that was my focus.
Like I wanted to be making freebies
to build my email list.
I wanted to be making digital products
to start generating income.
But I knew there was just that I could not
do that and do that well.
So I just pounded, I knew I wanted a year
to just pound out content.
And now as I move into this kind of this new shift
where I'm going to be able to put more energy
and attention into the business,
that's one of the first things,
one of the first strategies that I want to kind of implement
is so when I write these articles,
like the example I just gave you
of the laundry room and the pantry makeovers,
I include the paint colors, I include the matching finishes.
I include links to the matching finishes, which is all really helpful to a reader, right?
But in reality, what I can be doing and should be doing is not giving that all, but yet using that
as either a second piece or a lead magnet or a free download to build an email list
or a low cost digital download in the form of a full renovation checklist, if you will.
So that's really what I want to start implementing to try and build this business.
So providing all that same information just in, well, for one, it would
be a more organized fashion. It wouldn't just be a simple, like a big dump of information
into a blog article, but that would really provide me some traction to build a funnel
to really create followers.
I think that's really wise because no matter what your niche is, and I know that this is kind of a hard,
I feel like this can be a hard concept, especially for somebody who's new at being like a content creator and blogger,
is I think when we start, we kind of see ourselves as small.
Okay, well, I'm just going to be writing articles or I'm just going to be doing this. And it's kind of hard to sometimes see past that and see like, how can I really serve people in a bigger way
by doing what you just said, doing like a digital product of some sort. You could even do like online
consulting. You could be meeting with people like via Zoom and like doing consulting services and
things like that. You could be going to local people in their homes and helping them with things.
And so that's the encouragement I hope that you guys hear when you're listening to the
podcast is being a blogger today is about so much more than just sitting down and writing
articles on your website.
The opportunities are endless.
And like how it did for Wendy,
like she was feeling unfulfilled. Like those were your words. Like I felt
unfulfilled in what I was doing and I wanted to lean more into something that
brings me joy and brings me fulfillment. And I feel really excited and happy
about doing. And blogging can be that avenue for you in whatever your passion
is. And I there is that building process,
but I hope what you're hearing too with this interview is
she's one year in and she's already dreaming bigger
than she probably thought she could have a year ago.
Like just two years ago, she was just listening to podcasts.
So if you're listening to this and you're like,
I could never do that, I could never do that.
Like, yeah, you can, you can be like Wendy
and you can do it and you can take that step
of forward motion.
And I think sometimes when we look too far ahead
and we see this big giant picture
that can be overwhelming, you know.
But I love how you've said, okay, I just did the next thing
and then the next thing and then the next thing. And now you're still doing that. Now I know, okay, I just did the next thing and then the next thing and then the next thing and and
Now you're still doing that now. I know okay
I'm gonna focus on what I can do better and I think that that's something that as a blogger too
that's a very valuable lesson is knowing that there's always more to learn and
It's that is just part of the industry and the sooner you can lean into that
I think you're gonna find even more success and you've done you've done a beautiful job with that, I think you're going to find even more success. And you've done
a beautiful job with that, Wendy. You're like a sponge and ready to learn more and see how you can show up as best as you can. And so I just want to say congrats and pat yourself on the back for
that because you're just open. And I think that that's part of finding success in this industry,
too, is just being open to the opportunities and to
the knowledge that are going to come your way.
And so I want to just ask with where this is all going, what is the piece that you feel
the most excited about?
And is there something that you're excited about that you did not think was possible
that you'd want to share?
Oh my gosh, all of it.
First of all, a quick plug for you guys.
I couldn't do this without everything I learned from the ultimate blog bootcamp it was at
the time.
You guys, it is so incredibly overwhelming.
I mean, the technology aspect, the setting up of the blog, the resources, it's all so
gosh dang, overwhelming.
And if you don't have somebody that's there to help you, just like I am in my blog, helping
people make decisions about how to redecorate their living room, which colors work well
together.
That's what you guys are doing for us bloggers.
Your help, I mean, there's a whole big wide world of a million choices of every little tool that we need from our blog host to the tools
that we use to the email service provider.
It's just so overwhelming.
So to have your resources and connections, and I have used so many of the resources that
you have shared on the blog, are my people. First of all, I couldn't do it
without that. So I am most excited about seeing where this takes me. So I am a OCD type A,
must have everything planned out type of person. And that's why everything I do is very,
none of this is on a whim, but yet I'm very excited for that aspect of it
to see where this takes me.
I don't actually know where this is ultimately going to take me and that's really, really
exciting.
I might be, you said I might be doing e-consultations, I might be designing concept boards.
It's just very exciting to know that you have the opportunity to try
all these things on your own and engage what's working and what's not.
And I think a lot of that, again, is age, wisdom, experience, doing the work I've done,
the marketing, the design work I've done.
And my boys are in high school.
And I think that was a huge driving point of all this is that I know, like my oldest
is a senior, he's graduating in a couple months. Ah, I can't even talk about that. And my youngest
is a freshman. And I know I already feel it, the shift of that, that's going to be really,
really difficult for me. So it's almost like I knew I need a baby, I need, flairfully, yours to be that baby.
And that's going to need my attention, and that's going to be there for me to occupy
all that I've given my kids in the last few years.
What am I going to do when they're out of the house?
So I'm super excited just to have this project to really run with.
What I love is that the possibilities are truly endless.
And you get to write your story as you go.
And so whatever you come across that is going to fulfill you,
light you up, are going to be the opportunities that you have as you do this.
And that's what we love about blogging.
That's why we do this.
And that's why we love to help people is because we all deserve
to feel that way about how we spend such a large portion of our time and to be able to create
something where you have that control is just incredible. It's not easy by any means, but
you alluded to it before is that once you start, the wheels just kind of are in motion and you just kind of
have to keep going at that part. So if you're just waiting and waiting and hindering, my advice is
just do it, just start and just give yourself simple goals of putting out content. Start there
and things will happen naturally. I think that's really wise advice is that the getting started piece can be the scariest
step but then I think there's also something that holds a lot of people back and that is
how will I know if I'm going to be able to continue to create content?
What if I run out of ideas?
I think that's a very valid question with that. And so how do you, like a year in, one, did you feel like that before you got started?
Were you a little nervous that like your content ideas would dry up?
And then two, how has that kind of played out as you've been blogging?
Do you have that fear anymore or do you know that there's a place that you can go or how
you can continue to be inspired in that way? Over sure I thought that for sure and it is
and everybody says it's not going to happen there's always more to write about and it's so true
everything you guys say comes true and because you were saying it before is that it's my help
so you know I can't just keep doing projects, right?
How much is there to share?
And so that was truly a concern of mine,
but that's where I really learned.
It's so much more than that.
I mean, I can take a piece of wall art,
I write a whole article about it.
I can take three throw pillows and do an article
about how to mix and match colors and style them.
I mean, the sky really is the limit. It's just a matter of shifting your mindset and
shifting how you think about it. And truthfully, I have, next week will be 40 articles. I'll
have written, published 40 blog articles, which is not a lot, right? Really. I mean, it is a lot to me,
but in a seasoned blogger, absolutely, that's a little amount. But to think truthfully about it,
I could go back to all of those articles and probably spin off easily three to five articles
on each of those, right? You can probably say the same about your own blogs too.
The content is there.
It's just opening your mind to think about where to find it.
And some days I have zero ideas on that.
That's just part of being a designer.
I know that some days I just can't make stuff.
It's just not going to work.
And those days you do your admin and you do your paperwork then. And then when you get
into a creative spell, you run with it. My biggest struggle is just, I know I need systems
and processes in place. So that is what I am super excited. That's what my answer should
have been before. What am I super excited about? Is now once I faced having more hours
to work on this,
that is really what I need to focus on,
is getting some order to the badness here.
I think that all comes in time.
And I think that you're never too late.
You're always right on time,
no matter where you are in your blogging journey,
whatever your thing that is next,
that's where you're meant to be.
And so just leaning into that,
and I'm just really excited to be part of this journey with you and to get to be
