The Ultimate Blog Podcast.
We're on episode 195 of The Ultimate Blog Podcast, and I'm just going to take a moment to be like,
that is mind-boggling to me, that this is the 190th time that Jennifer and I have gotten
on here and clicked record.
Like, that's crazy.
So for those of you who clicked Play today, thank you.
We're approaching that 200 mark, and that just seems one.
I always ask the question as a content creator, like, how do people know what to talk about for so long?
And obviously, we've figured out lots of things to talk about.
So you have 194 other episodes that you can go back and listen to if this is the first one that you've
ever heard.
But thanks for hit and play today as we are going to dive into this idea of content batching for bloggers.
This is an area that Jennifer and I are both super passionate about, even if you aren't a
great planner. Even if you don't have that workflow set up yet that we talked about back in
episode 193, we just truly believe that batching your work is the way to feel more in control
and to feel more prepared for where you are going and what you need done in your blog. So
workflow, content batching, it all kind of works together. A true story here. We are currently
recording this before I head out to go to surgery. And we are working behind the clock,
which we normally do not do. I normally have these podcast episodes done well in advance.
And we are recording a podcast episode that needs to be to our editor like today. And I can tell
you that it does not feel good to feel like this. And this is something that I've prided myself on
as we've had the podcast is to not ever feel like this. There's only been a handful of times that
we felt like that in the almost four years that we've done it. So when you get this down,
you will want to continue doing it when you start doing this. When you batch your content and you
know what it feels like to have a big chunk of time that you're going to work on something and then
it's done for several weeks. It feels so good because nobody wants to have this thing hanging
over their head that needs done like right away. And then you're staying up late or like us today.
you're recording a lot of episodes in order to like batch work out ahead of time.
So just that's, that's my encouragement is if you have never batched anything in regards to your
blog, I want you just to have like an open mind today to think about this because we know it
sounds like it's just for people who are really organized.
But I think that you can teach yourself how to be organized too.
Because if you are feeling overwhelmed or burned out and you don't want to feel that way anymore,
then this can be a huge time saver for you and it can give you some freedom in your business.
And it's going to leave some room for your creativity while also giving you some structure to feel
accomplished. And I think that that's something that we do here a lot is sometimes you sit down and
you're not sure what to work on. And when you have a plan with content batching, that's,
that kind of takes that out of the equation is you are going to feel accomplished at the end of the day.
So Jennifer's going to go into some more specifics here about what exactly content
batching is and how you can start implementing it. Yeah. So really when we talk about content
batching, what we're talking about is like working on like tasks all together all at the same time.
So there's a few reasons you might want to do this. It can 100% give you more efficiency
because you're not swapping tasks. And I should have pulled up some stats before we
hopped on here today. But there are stats out there that you can Google about like how much time you
waste by switching from like one app to another or one program to another, one task to another
throughout the day. So we're already pretty much all of us are working at like a deficit in
terms of how much time we have available for all the things that we want to do. So if you can
just get a little bit of efficiency by grouping your tasks together, I think that is just a really
simple and great place to start. Even if you don't have your workflow all figured out, you can at least
kind of think about things in chunks of time. And I think that frees,
up some mental space. So the benefits to batch working, like I said, are efficiency,
mental clarity and the fact that it can give you some consistency. So if you are kind of
resistant to planning, I think batch working is a great place to start because you're not
having to plan out every detail of what you're going to do. But you can think of things in
buckets of time. And like we said, back on episode 193, we talked about the different buckets of
things to work on as a blogger. So you could start there and say, okay, today is the day that I'm going
to write all my posts. And tomorrow's the day I'm going to edit all my posts or something like
that. So it's just thinking about one area to start with, whether that's like you're going to do
all of your keyword research. Maybe you're going to sit down and outline your next four blog posts.
Maybe you're going to sit down and figure out a week's worth of content to share on Instagram.
whatever it is. So create theme days for yourself if that helps and say Mondays are blog post
days. Tuesdays are social media days. Wednesdays are admin days and Thursdays are creative days or
whatever the case might be. Maybe it's learning days. And it sounds like, oh my gosh,
I'm supposed to be creative. I should do it on a day that feels good. But if you actually plan out those
kinds of chunks of time, you're actually leaving the room for the creativity to happen because
you're not thinking about 75 different things that you need to do. You're like, nope, today's the day
I get to focus on this. And it allows you just that space to put everything else out of your mind
and focus on what's really important that day. So think about when you're thinking about these
theme days, think about working in cycles. Like what does the whole picture look like? Can I
drew this out as a circle what would each of the little wrongs be along here so it might be
i have to start with research then i create then i edit then i publish and so just thinking about
that and how it can help you get more done i think is just a really good place to start and like
amy said we batch work our podcast i know i sit down once a week and look at all of the upcoming
content I have to get it scheduled. I really try to break things down as much as possible. And it doesn't
always work perfectly. But in my mind, it just frees up so much space when I know like what I'm
going to be focusing on the most that day. So I think the most important thing is if you, if you are
not currently batching your content is to just give yourself this permission to start in one area of
your business. Like it doesn't need to look like the whole thing. So like don't think that you have to
have like your admin figured out all of your promotion figured out everything figured out like
what is one area of your business that might feel a little disorganized or that maybe you're
not making as much time for as you would like that's the one that you want to sit down and say okay
how do I think I could improve this by creating a system for it so start small so let's use the
example of you wanting to batch work like just the creation of a blog post so like we have said
You're going to need time to research what you want to write about. You're going to need to have time to
create it, edit it, and schedule it. One thing that I think is helpful is if you can set timers.
Otherwise, you could potentially be researching said blog post for hours on end because you're going to go
down rabbit holes and you're going to then check your email in the middle of that. Set a timer,
like we all have timers on our cell phones. Set a timer. Like set it for 20 minutes or something.
and like that's what you're going to do and you're going to move forward it's going to be b minus work
as jillian leslie and leslie says be minus work you're going to spend that 20 minutes researching the blog
post that you want to write about and then you're going to move on that's the thing with batching
that i think is really important too is it's not saying like okay today i'm going to write blog post
and so that means i have to use all eight hours like be efficient with your time too if you can
get more done in that time get more done in that time don't tell yourself well it should take me
eight hours to do this. We are looking for efficiency. We are looking for you to be able to stay
focused. And we are looking for you to be able to stay on task. That way, you are going to get more
done. That's the whole purpose of batching your content. It's also one thing I love about it is that
it allows you to be more flexible in your schedule. So for instance, we only record podcast
episodes two months out of every single month. And then we generally take off the summer. We don't
record in June and July because we just want a break. And we actually usually take off between
like Thanksgiving and New Year's as well in regards to recording content. One, that helps
us not feel burned out because we're able to take a break from being so on with recording.
Now, since we've batched, we have several episodes ready to go. And so we don't have to worry about
that. It's done for us, which feels so good. Like when you have posts or podcast episodes,
or things that are going out that you have worked ahead on, that feels so good, especially if it's a
week that like your energy is low or your personal life is taking up more of your schedule than it
usually does. You can still get out the content that you want to get out. You can still be
consistent. And that is just going to fuel the positivity in regards to your business. So I really do
think that even those of you who don't feel like, you know, you're great at planning or you want to just
be more flowing, whatever. I find that if you were to embrace this in just one small area of
your business to get started, I think that you are going to find success with it. And I think
you'll, you'll learn to actually look forward to it because you know, all right. Like,
we know on the two days that we record, like those are going to be longer days. Those are going
to be days that we are not going to be scheduling any roadmap member calls either. We'll get in
the roadmap, obviously, and like engage with them and answer their questions and all of that. But
like this is the energy that's getting poured out today is recording the episodes.
And then on days that we're in the membership and doing things in there, that is our energy
for our calls in there.
And so knowing like where your energy is at and how you can do that, I think it's really,
really important.
And it's going to help with that workflow that we are talking about with those systems
that you're creating in your business.
What I hope you're hearing here is that you're running a business.
your blog is a business that has the capacity to build revenue that you can be very proud of,
that has the capacity to leave a legacy that you can be very proud of,
to share content, to support, to connect with people and a community that you're honored
to walk alongside.
What I don't want to see happen is when, and I'm going off on a total tangent here,
that is not part of the notes, but when we don't have these systems in place and
we don't have a plan, we feel burned out, and then we start to resent the work that we feel
that we were called to share. So if you're feeling burnt out, if you are feeling like I don't
know if I can keep going, please lean in here, lean into what we're sharing about creating
these systems, lean into a community. We would love to have you in the ultimate blog roadmap if you
don't feel like you have that. We want to help you feel successful as a blogger without losing
yourself and without feeling like you don't have the capacity to show up and be the blogger
that we feel like you are created to be. And that I think that you know that you were created
to be or you wouldn't hit play on this episode. So if you didn't get the freebie from episode
193, we would love for you to download that. It was a blueprint that we created with you
in mind called the blogging systems blueprint. It's going to give you some example batching
schedules that you can follow. You can get that at the ultimate blogpodcast.com
slash systems. And we really do want you to utilize that to propel you forward in your blogging
business. And I hope that it encourages you. I hope that this week, the challenge would be one,
to download the freebie, but two, sit down and just like get curious about where you could
potentially batch some work and how it could allow you some more freedom and flexibility while
also providing some structure within your blogging business. And you never know. In a couple
months, this might feel like old hat and you start asking yourself, what else can I batch
or what else can I do? What else can I add a workflow to? And you might just feel your shoulders
relax a little bit. Your breath might slow down a little bit. And you might not feel so frazzled in
regards to creating content. That's our hope for you because we want this to feel really good.
We know what it feels like to feel that way. That's definitely not how we want you to feel.
And so creating some of these tools for you is important to us. We want to encourage you.
So download the freebie blogging systems blueprint at The Ultimate blog podcast.com slash systems
