Welcome back to the Ultimate Blog Podcast.
Today, I am just thrilled to spend time with Jesse.
She has been part of our community for a couple years now.
She joined our boot camp.
She's a podcast listener.
And now she's a member in our membership program,
The Ultimate Blog Roadmap.
And this interview came about so organically.
And we were in one of our roadmap calls, and she started talking about her journey with content creation.
And I immediately got off the membership call and got over to Slack, message Jennifer and said,
I want Jesse on the podcast.
I would love for her to share with more people than just who's in the roadmap about this journey
of becoming a blogger after starting a YouTube channel.
So today that is really the heart behind this is those of you who might be listening,
who maybe you're building on a social media platform or YouTube or something like that,
it's going to like expand your mind to think about it different and maybe in a bigger way
to not sell yourself short. And I cannot think of a better person to do that than her.
So, Jessie, welcome to the Ultimate Blog Podcast. We're so glad you're here.
Thank you for having me. I am so excited to be here with you ladies today talking about this
amazing journey that I'm in. And I hope that.
that, you know, all the viewers find a lot of value in our conversation today.
Yeah.
I know they will.
I think they will.
So I have always really enjoyed you as a person in the different ways that we've been
able to connect with you over the years.
You just have this light about you that I think that people are definitely going to feel
today.
And so can you just start out by sharing a little bit about your blog, your channel, and what
you do, what kind of content you share?
Absolutely. So my blog is called Joyful Jesse and my YouTube channel is also Joyful Jesse. And I love sharing content for primarily moms, but I also have followers that are just wanting to learn. I love sharing content about our homeschooling experience, traditional Puerto Rican recipes that are very simplified so that anybody can make them. And just life.
as a journey, live in life joyfully, which really is my main source of energy and just what
keeps me propelling forward is the joy of the Lord. So I always just love to have a joyful
perspective in and everything that I approach. And I hope that, you know, through the content that
I share, it inspires other people to find joy in their everyday lives as well.
I think it's great that you started a YouTube channel so that people can really get to know
and feel this joy that you obviously just exude out of you. I've always enjoyed anytime we've
had you on a call. You can just truly feel it. So can you talk a little bit about what inspired you
to originally start a YouTube channel and why you decided to tackle that specific platform?
Because I know it can be a little overwhelming. So tell us a little bit more about how you got started.
So I started my YouTube channel four years ago. I started really just sharing.
sharing everything. You know, I shared blogs. I would share recipes. And the one thing that
really did really well in that was my recipes. People were just loving how I was sharing
really straightforward simple recipes that they could also replicate at home or that they
grew up with. Then our homeschooling journey started coming and I started infusing content
into my YouTube channel based on our homeschooling journey. Two years into my YouTube journey,
my channel got monetized, and I was so excited, so over the, because quite frankly, I didn't
think that was ever going to happen, and it did. So once that happened, and I started seeing
revenue come in, I also had a brand deal with a brand, and I'm like, I had to fill out the
paperwork, and I had to put my personal name on, and I was like, you know, I should probably
have some sort of a business. So I created my LLC that August, and a friend,
help me with that. And while he was helping me with that, he was telling me, you know,
you need to think that you are going to be bigger. And in my mind, I was like, oh, but I only have
like a thousand something subscribers. He told me, you're going to want a website. Just, you know,
businesses have websites that, you know, you get different types of people that way. You want
your business to look professional because if brands are looking at you and they're just looking
at your Gmail, you know, it's not, they're not going to look at.
you that seriously. But if you have a website that has whatever your business name is on it,
they're going to see that you're more legitimate. So that got my mind turning. And then that December,
I went through a medical emergency that kind of set me home for a couple of months. And at that point,
I couldn't do anything. I couldn't go out. I couldn't do it. I couldn't content create because I
couldn't really walk or do any of that. So I started digging into, okay, let's see if I want to
create a website, what do I do? So I started looking at podcasts and I found you ladies there. And I
really just loved the vibe that you guys had, the fact that I was learning all of these things from
these people you were bringing in. It was just so valuable. So during that time, you know,
I started thinking, okay, this is my next step. This is what I need to do. I went back to work.
kind of put it on the back burner because I was thinking more of recovering.
But then that summer, I started seeing things that would show up on my YouTube feed
that would say, oh, my YouTube channel got hacked, or it got deleted.
And I started to panic because I was like, I have worked so hard for this.
And I finally have established an LLC.
I'm looking at this as a business.
And I could lose it in a blink of an eye.
And at the same time, that same thing was really.
resonating with some of your podcast episodes where you were saying, you know, if you have your
website, it's yours. You own it. You choose the content that goes on there. This is yours.
And I was like, I need to do that. I need to add some security to the hard work that I've already
been doing for the past two years. So that October, you know, I do a lot of planning in my head
before I actually take a step, I have to go through a bunch of different scenarios, see if this
is actually going to work, how am I going to be able to do YouTube at the same time as doing
a website? How much time might that take? How am I going to fit it in when I'm homeschooling
the kiddos in the afternoon? And I'm also working. So I had to inventory my time to see what
available time I had with that. So I did it in October because I knew Thanksgiving break was coming
up. I'm a teacher. And so I get Thanksgiving break off and Christmas break. So in my mind I had
a plan. I'm going to do this. In the weekends, I'm going to devote, wake up extra early on
Saturday and Sunday, devote four hours a day before the kids get up, see what's all in there,
what I can manage. And then during Christmas break, I'm really going to hammer everything out.
I'm going to have some blog post created so that then in January I can launch this app. And that's
what I did. And at first, you know, my website, you know, there was crickets, but I wasn't worried
about that. Because what I really was worried about was about securing my content. I wanted to
make sure it had a safe place and a home that regardless of what social media platform did
what, I still had what was mine. And that was the main reason for me choosing to create a blog and
joining you guys because I didn't know how to do this. There was so much back-end stuff.
I'm not a tech person. Yeah, I can edit a video and, you know, do that. But, you know,
that's pretty standard. When you go into coding and all those back-end of things on how websites
happen, I was just like, Lord, help me. I need your help today. But you guys had to laid out
to a way that I actually was able to do it. And is not where I want.
wanted to be yet, but it is where it needs to be at the current time in the current season
I meant.
And so, yeah, that's how it came to be.
If you've been thinking, I really want to grow my blog, I just don't know where to start.
Then listen up.

Hurry, though, the sale ends
Sunday night, July 27th at midnight.
I love that you made a business decision and that you took yourself seriously.
And I think that that's something that I hope that if you're like Jesse that you're
hearing yourself in her shoes, that maybe it's time for you to bet on yourself.
You had that realization that you'd put in all of this hard work.
You didn't want that to just go by the wayside.
And that does happen.
It still happens.
People are still waking up and their social media account is gone.
And I realize that we are in a day and age that there's a lot of people building on social
media and all of that.
But it is just still a safe idea to safeguard your content by having a website that you own.
And so when she's talking about that, what we're talking about is a self-hosted WordPress site
that you own.
we're not talking about Squarespace or Wix or anything like that. This is a self-hosted site. That's what
we teach people. That's what like when you come on and you're listening, that's what we're talking
about. It's a self-hosted website. So, so that all happened like in 2023, like fall of
2023. And so fast forward two years and you're still building and you're still growing. And
I think that that is a really interesting like dynamic of how this is all looked. Like you've been
on YouTube for four years. You've had your blog for about two years.
But there had to have been a shift at some point when you, because you sound very organized,
you can kind of, you can tell that you are. And I think that that has obviously worked to your
benefit. I think the more organized you can be and like having a plan in a system is always going
to work to your benefit. And so with that, like you had that rhythm and routine with YouTube.
So then when you're like, okay, now I'm going to have a blog. You obviously made a plan for setting up
your blog, which is genius. And what I loved hearing you say is I created the plan in my brain
and then I did it. And then this is what happened because you weren't messing around. And I love that.
I love that you shared that. Just that very targeted, like, this is what I'm going to do.
We don't have any time for excuses. We're going to do it and go. And you did it. So you launched in
January of 2024. Super inspiring. I love that. Because a lot of times people sit.
on it and they're nervous and they don't they doubt and they have that and i'm not saying that
you might not have felt some of that but you did it anyway which which i love but there had to have
been that shift in needing a system when you're adding a new platform uh jennifer and i talk a lot
about you can do anything but you can't do everything you can't be on every single platform
that's ever created or we would never sleep we would never feed our family's dinner we would
never leave the house and so there had to have been a point that you're like okay you're
Yes, I want to continue with my YouTube because now it's monetized and I enjoy that.
I got a flow, but I know I need to safeguard it and have a blog.
So what did that shift look like when you're like, okay, now I have to add in this whole
blog component.
So how does this work to balance my family, my job, and now this business of content creation?
Well, one thing I've learned as a teacher is that if you fail to plan, you plan to
fail. You have to have a plan before you start anything. Because if you don't, it's just going to
crumple apart. Your plan is like a foundation to whatever you're going to build upon. So before I
even took on the blog idea, I came up with the plan of when I was going to fit this in into our
very busy schedule. In YouTube, I had a rhythm of posting consecutively two videos.
a week. So I was already posting two videos a week. In the summertime, I was posting sometimes
three. So what I decided to do was I was going to create one video a week instead of two. And then
the energy I was spending on building that second video, instead, I was going to devote that to
creating my blog post. Knowing that I had made it to the point where my content creation on YouTube
wasn't taking as much time because I had already become more proficient, not excellent,
but just more proficient at editing my videos. Therefore, I became more efficient with it.
So I then made the time to create my blog post. The way I planned it was that I was going to
create my blog posts after creating my YouTube videos. Just because with my personal,
I can sit in front of a camera with a couple of bullet points and talk and it'll flow.
And at the same time, I get some new ideas while I'm in there.
Whereas if I'm to start with a blog post first, it's like, you know, how do I write it?
How do I word it?
So doing my video first works out well for me and then use the content that I've created
on my video to create a blog post.
and I would post the video first.
I will then use whatever transcript I have in there to organize it
and to make it flow so that it can be something that is legible
to whoever is going to read it.
At the same time, when I'm thinking of creating my YouTube videos
and making it a blog post, I'm now increasing my reach
because moms are busy, especially if you work,
if you homeschool, if you're running a business, you don't have time to sit there and watch a 10-minute
video, but you do have time to read and skim through a blog post for like two minutes. So I felt like
with this, I was reaching more of the moms that I really wanted you. And at the same time,
I was giving them that content that I thought would be helpful for them. So when it came to
creating a new workflow, I just took what I was devoting to YouTube and split it.
and just dedicated this time for YouTube, this time for a blog post.
When it comes to creating a video, I can do that.
A lot of them might be recipes.
Those are easy to create.
So if it's starting the school year, typically I'm filming those.
However, when it's sit down videos, ones that I have to talk,
I use my breaks from school to create that content because that takes a lot longer.
I have to go through and listen to it and edit it.
And creating blog posts for those also take a lot longer.
So when it comes to food creation, I create those typically during the school year.
And whenever I have a break, I'll do more of my homeschooling content.
And then when it comes to the breaks, I'm creating the homeschooling content, things that really
require a lot more mental energy and a lot of storytelling to connect with my audience.
I save that more for when I'm in the breaks.
However, I share them periodically.
You see what I'm saying?
so I might be sharing in November something that I created early on during the summer that I batched created
because I knew I was going to need that for November.
September and October, I create zero content because that's the time when I'm getting used to going back to school.
Our kids are starting their new homeschooling year and I really just want to be present in my family during that time.
So I've come to a point where the summers, I batch create a lot, mostly filming, and then that way throughout those two months, I have something that's coming out in my YouTube channel and in my blog posts.
Usually it's more like a draft on my blog, and then I can go in and edit, and that doesn't take as much time as the creating of the actual content.
So that's kind of how I've jimmied things in there and scheduled it at different times in a way that works for me.
However, for somebody else that might have a different job, the workflow is going to be a little bit different, which is why I think it's really important to inventory time.
And I tell that even to homeschooling families that come to me.
It's one of the things when I created my first freebie this year, the very first thing I have as the first step you need to do is inventory.
your time. You need to be realistic with that because in our minds we can build a whole plan
thinking that we can get all this stuff done. In reality, it's one thing that we can get done
in that little blog of time because it's going to take a whole lot longer than what we thought.
So inventorying the time to see what you have to work with is really important and being
able to strategically divide the time that you currently have on that current platform
and maybe minimize the amount of content you're doing on that platform to devote it to
this new thing that you're creating that is yours. You own it. And it's security for your business.

Now, let's get blogging.
I couldn't love everything you just said anymore.
It really speaks to me.
we talk a lot about the time inventory because I think the thing that people struggle with is,
hey, I'm going to be able to just do all these things. And I'm listening to the podcast and I'm in
this and I'm going to do Pinterest and I'm going to do Facebook and I'm going to grow my Instagram and my
YouTube. And it's wonderful to have those dreams. But I think what often happens is we don't have a
plan. We're not realistic with our time. And we go all in, burn ourselves out.
And then we're not accomplishing anything. But what you're going to show here is that you can be busy. You have a job. You homeschool your kids. And you're doing a YouTube channel and a blog. And you're making progress because you have a plan. You know how much time you have to work on those things. And so you're creating a realistic plan to make progress. And at the end of the day, that's always going to win because you're going to make the most progress, even if it's just little bits at a time versus trying to go all
in and burn yourself out. So I really love how you've done that. And the other piece I would like
you to talk about because I think people that are in your shoes from that perspective also may
have a lot of passions like you do. You like to talk about homeschooling. You like to talk about
recipes. And I think people might be afraid to create a business, a brand around multiple topics.
And I know you've talked about that as well. You've struggled a little bit with how do you want to
present this. Is this going to get me the right audience? So can you talk a little bit about how you've
pursued multiple topics on your channel and your blog and how that has developed over time and how
you think that impacts your audience? Yeah, sure. I have a wonderful cheerleader. My husband,
he's just so great. He's always like sharing me on. He's always like, it's amazing. I don't know how
you do it, but it's just amazing. But I'm always like, Hans, you know, you help me out. He helps with a
kids homeschooling. So we work together, you know, as a team. And he is great a photography.
So I have him take some of my pictures too because he can do that better than I can.
But when it comes to those two different audiences, oh, I've struggled so much with that because
I love it both. And what is so beautiful is that sometimes I get people that find me because
of my recipes and then they go do my website and they find out that I homeschooled too
where they've gone to my channel and they're like wait a minute you homeschooled too oh my goodness
and it makes me so happy when they're like I find your content so useful so valuable
I did decide to make a little shift on my YouTube channel just because of my analytics
so I just recently did a second channel joyful journeys with Jesse just
to kind of separate a little bit in that particular platform.
And I'm going to focus the other one more on, like, kitchen and cooking and my recipes.
But when it comes to my blog post, I received an email the other day from someone that found me
on Pinterest with a traditional Puerto Rican recipe.
And she came to my website and she writes, I cannot believe you also homeschool.
I'm a veteran homeschool mom of three.
and now they're homeschooling their kids
and your content is so inspirational.
I'm sending your website to all of my children
because this is so great, keep doing what you're doing.
And I was like, oh my goodness, this means so much to me.
You guys have no idea.
When somebody sends an email saying,
this is what I've been looking for,
you've simplified everything,
especially with the curriculum I use.
Sometimes people find that very overwhelming
and I've come up with systems
to make it easy to organize.
so it's now overwhelming and people have found that and they're like this is amazing like
you're sharing super simple way I can organize this and then your recipes aren't taking me hours
upon hours with a gazillion million different ingredients to make I can do this so I've I've kind
of seen how those two worlds have mixed together and it makes me so happy like the majority of
my followers are women which that makes me so happy because you know that is my audience
yes there are some men that do follow me and it's for the recipes they they're happy they're
showing it to their wives you know my mom used to make this for me thank you because now i'm i'm able
to do it at my home or thank you for bringing me you know my nostalgia my childhood back and
i'm getting so nostalgic with this so that makes me happy now when i i just created my first
my first digital product so i'm excited about it but i was trying to
and to figure out how in the world can I mesh both worlds together?
How can I do this?
And I was able to create a, well, I call this Tawori Saviduria,
which means flavor and wisdom or knowledge,
and is simple traditional Puerto Rican recipes in the formats of lessons.
So it includes lessons that families can do at the same time as they're teaching their kids
how to do these cultural foods.
So I'm incredible. Thank you. It's incredible. I've seen it. It's so good. So I anybody,
anybody listening right now who's like, oh, I would like to learn from her, we're going to put
that freebie in the show notes because it is so, so good. She did an amazing job with this.
I just had to, I had to butt in and say that really fast. So for my homeschooling one,
I did, what was it, like a 10 steps on how to, you know, start your homeschooling journey.
and then I'm thinking for the one that I'm going to be selling.
I'm being very strategic of when I'm launching this
because I'm launching this right before Hispanic Heritage Month
because during that time, people are looking for lessons.
People are looking for all sorts of cultural things to do
to infuse into their homeschooling or even teachers.
This is something that they will find value in those months.
So right now I'm just putting the last finishing touches for my product
so that I can launch it in September, after September,
like right before September 15th when Hispanic Heritage Months begin. But yeah, that freebie when it
comes to homeschooling, I created that with thinking what would, what did I wish that was out there
before I start homeschooling? So I went through every process I went through. These are the 10 steps
I took that I think will make it less overwhelming for other families, you know, so that they can
embark on this journey too. I think that it marries well what you're
sharing it marries well so i think anybody listening who has like those multi passions that you want to
talk about ask yourself how how somebody coming in how are they going to receive it in a way that
it can kind of feed off of each other and i think that that's why you're going to find success with
that is because it it works like it's not it doesn't feel like it's two separate buckets because
you have things like that freebie that you're like here's the recipe but also here's the lesson so
it's it's so much more than just the recipe like you're you're teaching about it and how you can
teach kids too you know and to keep that journey simple for those moms and dads out there who are
homeschooling who need resources who want to teach at home I think it's just a really incredible gift
that I'm glad that you've you've kind of figured that out and I know that wasn't easy but
you're you just keep putting one foot in front of the other and doing it and making a plan
And I think that that's the encouragement here is what's the next step?
Like, where am I going next?
Like, where is this next?
You're taking yourself seriously.
You know who you're talking to.
That's another podcast we could talk about.
You know who you're talking to.
And what they need.
And you're putting yourself back in those beginner shoes where you were and asking
yourself, what did I need when I was a new homeschool mom?
Or what did I need when I got in the kitchen, you know, for the first time and started
of making these recipes myself, and how can we continue this? How can we continue to the
heritage? How can we expand the knowledge to where more people can enjoy these delicious
foods and teach their children how to make them, whether they're Puerto Rican or not? You know,
like it doesn't matter. We just want everybody to be able to enjoy these. And so I just,
I love that you, you are passionate about multiple things, but you're teaching in a way that they can
kind of work well and feed off of each other. And I think that that's going to end up,
benefiting you quite a bit in this. And your freebie is incredible. Like it, I was reading through it
and I was like, this is, this is so fun to be in the kitchen and like making this recipe and then
truly understanding it. Like that is fun. That's not just fun for the parent who's teaching the
child, but that's fun for the kids too to like get their hands in and, and do that. So just,
just big kudos there. Thank you. Thank you. Yeah. Yeah. Before we wrap up here, there's one last
question I want to just touch based on because we kind of did this before hitting
record. And you were talking about your journey and not comparing it to somebody else's.
There are a lot of content creators out there right now. There's a lot of food bloggers.
There's a lot of homeschool parents. There's a lot of teachers. How do you stay focused on your
journey and the path that you're on and the people that you're meant to serve? How do you kind
of encourage yourself along the way to just stay in your lane?
essentially. So I think the biggest drainer of joy and energy is comparing yourself to somebody
else. That's like the worst thing you could do because you are so individual and unique and there's
nobody else out there for you. I mean, like you rather. So you comparing yourself to another
content creator is wrong because they are going, they have different mannerisms, different way of
thinking, different ideas, different ways of connecting than you. So the best person, if you're going to
compare yourself to somebody, the best person to compare yourself to is yourself before. Compare yourself
a year ago. Where was I a year ago? Where am I now? I have progressed. I have grown. Yes,
it hasn't been viral, but guess what? I can't handle viral right now. The reality of the matter is that I am
where I need to be at this present moment in my journey.
So just you have this big goal that you want that to be the best goal that you want to reach.
However, you can't get there overnight.
It's steps.
When you think of when we're born, we're not born knowing everything.
We have to learn how to walk.
We have to learn how to ask for food.
We have to learn how to do find motor skills.
These are all baby steps that in.
Later on in life, we're able to communicate successful.
We can go ahead and be mobile and do all these things.
The same way in our business.
You know, we have to think of ourselves.
Where was I at last year?
Two years ago.
Three years ago.
Where am I now?
What have I learned and acquired all this time?
I've maybe gathered a new plan on how to do things.
Maybe I've learned how to be more efficient.
Maybe I've learned how to be more strategic.
This has taught me.
me all the skills I need so that when my business does continue to grow, I'm not overwhelmed.
I'm not freaking out because I learned everything at a rate that wasn't overwhelming.
I let a sink in. It grew roots. And now is a solid scale.
So, you know, that's that's the way I think of my journey. And I can sit here and think about,
man, I've been on YouTube for four years when I should be at 50,000, 100,000 because this other
person has done it. If I start thinking that way, I'm going to give up. I'm going to be discouraged.
When I look at my blog post, I feel so excited because initially I didn't go with the idea I'm going
to make money on my blog. I went in it with the idea. I'm creating a security for my business. Yes,
it's monetized now and I'm so excited that, you know, I'm on Media Vine's journey and I'm making some
money on it and that is wonderful but what was my primary goal it was that security and i have that
so everything else that comes on top of that is amazing is awesome i'm learning how to navigate through it
and as things continue to go on then i'll be ready and prepared for that am i ready to do all these
crazy brand deals right now no i find them to be stressful i've taken about four one major one
that I absolutely love because that is I love that that company but I find it to be very stressful
am I going to be able to do that later on absolutely in the meantime I've turned down quite a few
because I'm not ready for that you know my in my journey right now I just want to create this
content yes I will diversify my income when the time comes when I'm prepared for it here
at home my family is ready for it you know because what I do affects my family too
So I think of all those things.
I am where I need to be at the present moment.
That's the right place I need to be.
I will eventually be in my final goal.
I will get there.
But these are the steps that are making me stronger and stronger
and more proficient as I continue in this journey.
So just compare yourself to yourself, nobody else,
and look at the growth that you've done along the way.
Because it might not seem a lot.
But when you think about it,
It is a lot. You've come a long way. If you've already created your blog, the idea that you did this on your own by yourself with the guidance of Jennifer and Amy, that's huge. Not many people do that. You know, some people hire people to do that. And you did that. Like, kudos to you. You know, feel empowered for what you have already accomplished. So, yeah, that's what I'd say.
so encouraging so encouraging and just a great reminder that every step along the way matters
and I love that you also shared earlier about like the email that you got and that that one
person that you impacted and the way that it made you feel I think that that is such a good
reminder that you really sometimes I think that we we look at the numbers too much like
the analytics too much and the data too much and we forget the impact that you are having
on one person and how deep and wide that impact can go. And so I think you very joyfully
shared that today with this just to as a reminder to all of us, quite honestly, like you're
impacting one person. And that one person is not just one person. It's, it's all the people that
they are also part of and the people that they interact with and how they're helping as well.
