blog, sharing unique insights and practical tips. We bring you in-depth interviews with successful
bloggers and experts who offer valuable, actionable advice. Our mission is to educate,
support, inspire, and empower you in your blogging business. Welcome to
The Ultimate Blog Podcast.
Well, today is September 30th, and if you hit play on this episode, I am going to assume that you might not have a content calendar yet for quarter four, or maybe you hit play today because you do and you want to see what we would have done differently or what we would recommend.
But if you are not listening to it on the day that this episode goes,
live. I also want to encourage you to just keep listening because even though fall is one of the
most productive times of your four bloggers, this episode is going to be shared in a way that is
very evergreen and that can serve you really well, no matter if you're going into quarter four,
quarter one, quarter two, quarter three, it's still going to help you kind of look at your
content within a three month time chunk. That way you can stay consistent and hopefully reduce
your stress. So today, I'm just going to walk you through just kind of a simple variation
and an idea of how you can create a content plan for the next 90 days. As we go into this,
it's going to be simple, like I said. But what I want to make sure that you understand also is that
this is not about perfection. Your content calendar and the way that you come about this is going to
be different than mine or Jennifer's or the other blogger that you know. Really what you want to
understand is that you are looking for clarity. You're going to give yourself the gift of
flexibility, but you are also going to give yourself the gift of consistency. So this podcast episode
is actually coming from a coaching call that we did within our membership, the ultimate
blog roadmap. And that was a live coaching call that we did. And the name of that workshop was
from blank calendar to blog strategy, plan your next three months. The members got a workbook. They got a
live call. That training is still in the roadmap and will continue to be.
So if you would like to dive deeper into that or just get the support that goes far beyond
anything we could ever provide you here on the podcast, we want to invite you in to join
us at the ultimate blog roadmap.com. This is our blogging membership. We have a minimum of three
calls every month. And there is also a course component there as well. You are going to get
coaching calls that are going to support your blogging business. And it really is just a great way
to connect with bloggers, connect with Jennifer and I. We get so much feedback from you guys that
the podcast is really helpful. And what I want to make sure that you know is that this is just
one step of your blogging journey. This is great that you're on a walk or taking your kids to
school or whatever you're doing right now. Maybe you're cooking dinner. But we really do want to
invite you into that deeper connection with us and allow us to support you in a deeper way within the
ultimate blog roadmap. So again, you can check that out at ultimate blog roadmap.com.
That is also going to be in our show notes. All right, let's kick this off.
So when you were thinking about your next 90 days or your next three months, the first area
that I want you to start with is look at your calendar first. Understand what this looks like
for you personally over the next 90 days. So we are going to encourage you to start with a realistic
goals. You don't want to just like randomly fill your calendar with posts and things like that.
Get clear on what these goals are for this three month time span that you are focused on.
So set like one to three clear goals for yourself for the next quarter.
So I want to give you a couple of examples because I think sometimes we can take our goals and we
can make them massive. I want you to think about how you could grow your traffic, how you could
grow your email list. Are you going to update old posts? Is the goal to maybe just get in a
consistent publishing cycle? Is it to prep content for a product lunch? Is it to brainstorm and actually
think about a product that you do want to launch? So it can be a number of different things,
but I really do want you to think about what your goals are over the next 30 months. What is that?
And most importantly, be very realistic with your time. So remember I said, first I want you to
look at your calendar and then I want you to look at your goals. If you know what you have coming up,
I think you can easily understand, like, what your capacity is.
And if you're like me, sometimes we think our capacity is a lot more than what it is.
So I want to encourage you just to be really realistic with yourself about that.
If you only have three hours a week, you are not going to get three posts out in a week.
It's not going to happen.
So your goal needs to match the season that you're in.
It needs to also match your calendar and what that is going to be able to hold and give yourself grace for that.
If it's, if you really want to pump out like three posts a week, maybe you're going to have to
change some things around. But if you aren't able to change some things around within your
schedule, show up in the best way that you can with the time that you do have and be very
intentional with that time. Okay, step two is thinking about your content in two different
buckets. One being seasonal and one being evergreen. It's really important that you have both
on your blog. That way you are pulling people in with that seasonal content. And you're not,
you might get an uptick in traffic around the holidays or back to school or maybe in the summer
depending on what your niche is. But then you have that evergreen content that can serve your
reader all year round. And that's going to be a little dependent on what your niche is. So think about
that. Think about what your readers need right now in this season that they're in and also what
they'll need any time of the year. And think about what you could talk about in regards to those
two different buckets. So some examples of seasonal content might be like a holiday recipe. It might be
like a back to school hack. It might be quarter four shopping guides because shopping guides are
huge for Christmas. It could be like a summer prep or a summer bucket list. It could be spring break
trips for families. It could be spring break trips for couples, things like that. So those are like
seasonal examples that you're going to want to kind of brainstorm with what does it look like
to write seasonal content this time of year. Now, here's the tip when it comes to seasonal content.
If you are thinking about something right now that needs to go live for Christmas,
you need to get it out as soon as possible. You want Google to be able to read that. You want
people to be able to find it. So it might feel a little weird if you're publishing like Christmas
content in early October. It's okay. Just do it.
I promise it'll be just fine for you because you're going to want to promote it and we're
going to talk about that here in a few minutes. But you're going to want to promote that in other
places and you really just want to kind of get that juice going behind that post. So seasonal posts
should go live early. Evergreen posts like we're saying can go live kind of any time. And so
be a little picky when you're coming up with these content ideas and these post ideas with
when do my seasonal posts need to go live in regards to the next three month time span. If it's
based around a holiday or an event or something like that.
So Evergreen, like I mentioned, is another one that can be really helpful.
And in that, you can think about like tutorials.
It might be lifestyle tips.
So it might just be like getting in a workout routine or how to start a new routine at home.
It could be just like across the board recipes, just like any recipe that like people can
use all year round, any how to posts that will work year round.
So your evergreen content is going to be that.
content that people are going to be looking for no matter what time of year it is and probably
no matter what season they are in. It might be encouragement or something like that. And that content
is really important as well. It can kind of just keep people coming to your blog. Somebody might
come in on that seasonal content or they might come in on that evergreen content. How can you get
them plugged into the other? Because both are really important. So think about that balance.
Think about what your posts need to be that are going to be able to include both of those.
things because that can be really important. Step three, like we've kind of talked about here,
is pick your priority topics. So what are the content ideas that are supporting your goals?
So going back to goals, what are those goals? Is your goal to drive more traffic to your blog?
If so, you're going to want to think about posts that are driven by SEO. You're going to want
to think about what's actually bringing people to the blog. So you might want to dive into Google
analytics, understand what keywords people are coming in on. What are they coming there for? What are they,
like when they land on your blog, what is it that's bringing them there in the first place? So like,
go into Google Analytics, see what people are coming in on and have an understanding of that. And then see
how you can create content surrounding that to bring more people in. So you want to have that
balance, like I said. So if you're wanting to bring people in to increase traffic, understand that
some of those posts are going to need to be SEO driven. But maybe you just want to build that
relationship. You really want to solidify that. Maybe there's some storytelling involved. We had
some really great podcast episodes on storytelling a couple months ago. I can link those in the show
notes. But maybe you want to give them like behind the scenes. Maybe you want to really create that
connection with your readers. And so that might be in a blog post, but it also might be like in an
email series that you want to go out. Maybe you are not going to create a blog post, but you're going to
create a freebie instead that's going to bring people in based on a story or something and then
you can share content that you have already created on your blog with them to really just continue
to solidify that. So understanding that building that relationship with your reader is really
important too. You're so much more than just the blogger sitting behind the computer like you're
a person with stories and expertise and when they hit subscribe, there's a reason for that. And so
allowing them to step in and understand who you are, why you're serving them, why this is
important to you. I think is really important. But like I said, there's got to be balanced. So we can't
just do that all the time. People want to take action. Like when we come on websites, we want to take
action. We want to give them something that they can do. So understand that while that building that
relationship is really important. We also want to make sure that we are having some things that
build that traffic that allow them to do this call to action and do this now as you're kind of
building the relationship as well.
Fall is one of the most productive times of the year.
With your routine falling back into place, it's the perfect season to finally focus on launching
the blog you've been dreaming about.
And that is why we created the fall into blogging 30-day checklist.
This checklist is a clear step-by-step.
guide to help you know exactly what to do each week to get your blog up and running in 30 days.
From choosing your niche to setting up your blog to writing your first post and sharing it with
everyone, you'll have a simple to-do list to follow without feeling overwhelmed.
If you've been waiting for the right time to start your blog, this is your sign.
Use this fall season to make real progress towards your goal and set yourself up for success
before your end.
You can get your free copy today at The Ultimate Blog Podcast.com slash fall.
Once again, you can do this.
Use this fall to launch that blog that you've been dreaming of.
And you can get the guide at the Ultimate Blogpodpodcast.com slash fall.
You also want to potentially be doing some things that are going to boost
your revenue. So you might be working with a sponsor this quarter. So think about how that's going
to fit in. Adding some more affiliate posts, maybe you want that. If you need to drive up revenue,
that might be something that you're asking yourself, like, okay, so SEO is great. So is building
relationships. But like I really need to make some money here. And if you're listening to this
going into quarter four, that's likely what you're thinking because it's like a blogger's time to
shine. Usually is in quarter four is when you have the most potential to make the most money in regards to
like add revenue and things like that. That just tends to uptick every Q4. So be ready for that.
But looking at the things that you are producing and is it going to be a revenue booster.
So that might be a product that you're creating or like an opt-in promo that you want to have people like,
let's say you have a membership or something like that or a course that you're selling.
Are you going to be offering a sale in order to increase engagement, increase membership,
increase people purchasing from you, think about that and think about how that needs to fit within
the goals and also the content that you are creating. Not every post is going to check every box
and that's okay. It shouldn't. Like I said, we can't have every post or every content that we create
be about just relationship building with that person. They also don't want only SEO and it feels
very robotic. But we also don't want to just sell to our audience all the time. That really feels
and authentic, and we want to show up for them, and we want to sell, like, you absolutely should
be selling, and that's totally okay, but find the balance. So not every post is going to check
every box. The real goal is that variety and offering the balance between all three.
Step four is one that I think is the hardest for most of us. And that is when you are creating
your calendar, when you're looking at your goals and then you're mapping out your
content for the next three months. I want you to leave white space. I want you to leave
margin. You need a buffer. Do not overstuff your calendar because let me tell you a little
story. What's going to happen here is you're going to sit down and the holidays haven't
really hit yet. And so you're going to say, all right, I can totally do this. I think I can
totally get out three posts every single week. And I can promote those posts. And I,
I am just going to just, I'm going to do the thing this quarter.
Mid-October rolls around and you're already missing the mark and then you give up and you're
like, well, if I can't do that, then I can't do anything.
And I really want to challenge you to go by the wayside with this way of thinking.
I want you to like leave this black and white thinking behind.
It does not serve you well in this business.
It never will.
There's got to be room for a gray area.
So leave that buffer.
you are going to have things that come up. You're going to have family events. You're going to have
holidays, all kinds of things. But leave a buffer. Your calendar should give you this feeling of
motivation. It should not like totally stress you out or overwhelm you. If that's how it feels in regards to
the content that you need to create, I would strongly encourage you to go back to the drawing board
and ask yourself what needs to change. Like you don't have to do everything. So there are a lot of things
that we can do as a blogger, but you need to be focused on the ones that are making the most
impact that are driving the most traffic and the most revenue. And the things that don't
align with that, like, what can you let go? And I realize that is a really, really hard question
to ask yourself, but I can tell you that at any given point, all content creators, all bloggers
were asking ourselves those same questions. Things come and go. What worked for us in one season
might not work with us in another season. So ask yourself that. What can I,
I do to create this margin, to create this buffer. How can I push myself without making it unattainable
or without making it super stressful? You want to enjoy this time of year. You want to enjoy building a
blog. You don't want it just to feel like a job that we could go and have with anybody. You know,
we could go get a job anywhere, right? But we chose to do this and this should be enjoyable.
So one tip with that with the buffering and to create that kind of buffer is to batch your work.
We've got other podcast episodes on that.
I just, I'm going to keep harping on that because I think it's so impactful.
Ask yourself how you can batch your tasks in order to streamline what you're doing.
I'll link those episodes below as well in the show notes.
And I think it can be really helpful for you to do that and allow you to just find that buffer.
Because I know that's a challenge speaking from personal.
experience, but I think it's something that we can all really work towards in order to enjoy
or doing more. Promotion is going to be huge. It should be no matter what quarter it is.
Publishing is only half your job. So you're going to want to have a plan with when I create
content, then this is what happens next. At a very bare minimum, you should be sending out
your posts to your email subscribers. If you don't have an email list yet,
please, please, please, please, uh, get signed up for Kit today. I'll put a link in the show
notes. You need a way to be getting email addresses. If you are listening to this episode and
you only have social media, you still need an email list. You still need a blog, but you
absolutely still need an email list because if you woke up tomorrow and your social media was
gone and you had no way of contacting any of those people and that's your livelihood. If you
had an email list, you could easily contact those people. So if you are just sharing on social
media, one, please consider starting a blog. We would love to help you. Visit ultimate blog roadmap.com
to learn how we can do that. But I think I'm just also really going to press on this because
if you are just building on social media alone, that's a risky business that you got there. And I
realize that's a bold statement this day and age, but I'm going to stand firm on that and just remind you
that you need a website, you need a blog, you need a place where people can find you and they
can connect with you and they can do that on your blog, on your website, and they can do that with
your email. So at a bare minimum, when you create content, share via email, even if you have
an RSS feed, so if you're a blogger that publishes content on your website, you can set up an
RSS feed. And all that does is it at a given time, it's going to pull, okay, does Amy have new
content out today? It finds the content at a certain time and it's going to pop it out to
to your email subscribers. It makes it very quick and easy for you. Don't let anybody tell you that
RSS feeds are outdated. They might be, but here's the deal. An RSS feed is way better than no
feed. It's way better than no email. It's way better than no communication. So don't let somebody
tell you that I can't believe you're using an RSS feed because somebody said that a while back
and it just like, I don't know, kind of rub me the wrong way because I think we are all trying to do
the best that we can. And if an RSS feed is what you need to use in order to communicate and
to make sure that your people get your content now before you have more of that buffer
and more of that margin, you do you, girl, send out the RSS feed and don't feel one bit bad about
it. Another better way to do that and a better way to promote would be to write one personal
weekly email to connect with your list or maybe it's a monthly newsletter that you can send out
that might have some like tips or it might have links to other blog posts. It could be like
a recipe roundup or something like that. You can also repurpose your content.
and you can turn that one blog post into multiple Pinterest pins.
You could use it for Instagram posts, Facebook posts.
You can make a short video out of it.
You could do like a YouTube short if that's another area that you're on or a reel or anything
like that.
Know that like when you create that long form content on a blog, it can be repurposed in so
many different ways.
We had an excellent podcast episode that talked about this.
I will link that as well because I think it is so crucial to think about how you can repurpose
the content that you are creating. So as you are going into the next 90 days and you're thinking
about the content that you're going to be publishing on your blog, I want you to also be really
energized knowing that it's not just blog posts that you're creating. You're also creating
all of this content that can be utilized in so many different aspects of promotion for your business.
So it's a really exciting thing to think about the content that you're going to create and
and then how it can continue to show up and serve the people that you want to show up and serve
and help. I hope you feel encouraged. You can do this. I don't want to, if this is the first time
you've ever kind of thought about a 90-day plan, I don't want you to feel like this is rigid or
structured or complicated. I started out saying like the goal here is clarity and consistency. It is
not perfection because your goal is going to look different than somebody else's.
So there actually is like no definition of perfection when it comes to blogging.
And so think about what a good quarter would look like for you.
Like when you're looking back at the end of this three months and you could say to yourself,
I did this right.
What would that be?
So when you sit down and write that, that's what I want that fire to be lit is this is going
to feel really, really good at the end of this three months.
So here is what I want you.
you to do today. There's a call to action today, your to-do list. I want you to pick one to three
goals. I want you to brainstorm seasonal content and evergreen content that's going to serve your
readers. And then I want you to kind of map out the next three months with margin. So that might mean
six to nine posts. That might mean like 12 posts. It might be like one a week. And then also consider
how you're going to promote those. And I would just create a system for that. I'm going to post on
Pinterest. I'm going to create an Instagram real or a carousel, and I'm going to do this and just let
that be. Make it simple. Keep it simple because simplicity is going to allow you to be consistent.
If you make it really, really complicated, I can promise you now you're not going to want to
be consistent with it because it's going to feel overwhelming. So I hope that this episode is really
helpful for you. If you want more of a deep dive or if you want some accountability with this,
We would love to have you, like I said, in our membership, the Ultimate Blog Roadmap.
And you can get access to our live call.
You can get access to the workbook that we created.
You're going to get personalized support in there.
So whether or not you are a brand new blogger, you have been blogging for a while,
or you are just looking for a community with blogging, we want you to be in the roadmap.
It is a great place to be.
It's a great community full of just really,
engaging and energizing and inspiring women who are building their blogs. And it's an exciting place to be.
When you're surrounded by other people who are building and doing what you're doing, it just feels
different. And I know for a lot of bloggers, you're sitting at home by yourself and you're doing
this by yourself. I want to tell you that you don't have to do it by yourself. We would love to
help you. And so would the other members and the ultimate blog roadmap. So the link for that is going to be in
the show notes. And I hope that today just lit a fire. And I'd love for you to share this episode
with another blogger that you know who might need a little support in the next quarter.
Thanks for listening today. If you liked it, I'd love it if you would just leave a review on Apple
or rate it on Spotify. That helps other people find it. And it means a lot to Jennifer and I.
