We've got a...
Starting point is 00:00:35 There's so much to talk about this week. There's genuinely a lot. Okay, so PlayStation wants to prove in court that you don't own your digital games. We're going to fight. This has huge... We are? Yep. You and me?
Starting point is 00:00:47 No. Oh, that makes way more sense. This has huge implications way beyond the ownership of mere video games. There was a massive... multi-terabyte steam leak. What else we got? I think we could each pick three this week. There's the GoPro thing, which like...
Starting point is 00:01:09 Is blowing up the internet right now? Yeah. I mean, we've already talked about that. YouTube redefined views? Yeah. Okay? You pick two more. There's so much.
Starting point is 00:01:22 SteamDB was acquired by Nexus mods. That's actually like... Yeah, most people that I know are not stoked about that. We'll see how that goes. Toward the bottom. Toward the bottom. Another big one. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:01:35 DLSS-5 now working on all RTSGGPUs. Dude, DLSS-5 working on a 2000 series is going to be a hoot. Okay, so stick around. Yeah. The show is brought you to today. The show is brought to you today by Odu, Vessi, Motion Gray, and X-split,
Starting point is 00:02:16 along with our rap partner D-brand, our laptop partner, Delinar, Ter, partner, Razor, let's jump right into the big news from Sony. You do not own your games, and frankly, you should have known better, honestly, because while it does say buy and we do take your money, actually, you just should have known. Sony has made an official response to the class action lawsuit brought against it regarding its failure to comply with California's 2025 digital goods law. This says, for context, feel free to skip over here just in case.
Starting point is 00:02:50 Let's do the context. In mid-June, a group of gamers filed a class action lawsuit against Sony, alleging that the company fails to state in plain language that buying or purchasing a digital good actually means licensing it. The gamers argue that despite the store using terms like, Buy Now, and Confirm Purchase. Sony is only granting a limited access license that can be revoked at any time.
Starting point is 00:03:21 As reported by GameFile, Sony's counter-argument to the lawsuit is that disclosures around digital purchases on PlayStation are already clearly defined in the TOS and licensing agreement stating that reasonable customers would not be misled into believing they own the games they purchase. In addition, Sony's counsel writes that digital ownership would be impossible and that the plaintiffs already know this. Hold on, hold on, I'm not done yet. He can't, he can't, he can't help it.
Starting point is 00:03:54 I can, I can actually, I can actually feel the heat. Like I could probably warm my hands off of his anger right now. I'm, I'm going to make you contain it a little bit longer. You're turning red. You, you would like him when he's angry. I'll let him do it in a minute. He's going to unload. He's going to unleash.
Starting point is 00:04:16 It's going to be great. arguing that two of the gamers bought Resident Evil Requiem 11 days apart, and if the first guy actually owned it, the second one couldn't have. Full quote, because it's genuinely insane. Plaintiff Edward Haycock would not have been able to obtain the game Resident Evil Requiem on February 24, 2026 for 6999 from the PlayStation store, after Plaintiff Jason Mendoza had obtained Resident Evil Requiem on February 14, 2026, because Mr. Mendoza, not Sony, would have owned it then.
Starting point is 00:04:46 So, wait, there's only one of the game, and if you buy it, you have bought the single, so Sony is arguing that in order to buy a game, you have to actually buy like the full IP. Seems like it. You have to, what, you have to buy the studio? Okay, go. There's honestly a lot of things. One, one, the first one that I want to start with, and this is the most like lukewarm, I feel like basically. everybody agrees with it that's going to watch this argument. So whatever.
Starting point is 00:05:24 But the whole idea of like they should have known, therefore it is okay, can backfire so hard. Yeah. A Sony should know better than to use an argument like that. And it goes towards, you know, the whole ad block is piracy thing.
Starting point is 00:05:42 They should have known that ad blockers were freely available and almost everyone runs them. And therefore you cannot expect to ever run an ad block. on anything on the internet. They should have known that pirating video games has been a thing for many, many years, is readily available to basically everyone. And in a lot of ways, doesn't feel like you're super doing something bad these days. They're not as a nefarious feeling as they used to be. Therefore, I mean, you should just expect people to pirate things and you should, you should understand that that is an unavoidable problem. I don't know if those parallels are
Starting point is 00:06:18 quite parallel. But they're saying, I think I see the vibes you're throwing down, though. Yeah. They're not exactly parallel, but like the idea that someone should make an assumption that the thing that you're telling them is true, buying purchasing.
Starting point is 00:06:33 Or that the thing you're telling them is not true is more like. Because you're telling them that they're buying it through that button that says buy now. But they should have known you didn't mean it. No, yes, yes, yes. Correct. Yeah, I said it wrong. I actually saw a really funny,
Starting point is 00:06:45 I saw a really funny like neurodivers meme. That was basically just like, you know, as a neurodivergent person, every time someone tells me, well, obviously you should have known that they weren't being literal. It's like, how? Yeah. But actually, though. And like in this case, they were literal multiple times. Yeah. So like, I, no, I actually just starkly disagree. We're jumping out to the next one now. Starkly disagree that people, that you can assume that people would know that they don't own this thing that they just bought. I also feel like the, it's in the TOS defense has been tested before. Like, am I, am I forgetting this?
Starting point is 00:07:26 Because I'm pretty sure everyone knows those don't hold up. I'm pretty sure that just because it's in the terms of service that, oh, oh, yeah, right. See, when I said bye, what I actually meant was you can use it for a little bit as long as I'm okay with it. Like, how can you possibly? This is kind of my point. Bent Bob and Full Point chat said, wait, if I buy a physical game with a code in the box, what happens then? It's a license. Well, see, but here's another thing that, again, I don't think Bent Bob is a reasonable person, which is really important.
Starting point is 00:08:01 That word reasonable? Did I say I don't think they're a reasonable person? Sorry, I think Bent Bob is a reasonable person. I was like, what? I was trying to say, I don't think Bent Bob is an unreasonable person. And that term reasonable person, like actually matters. not a legal scholar. There you go.
Starting point is 00:08:19 You got it. Once you pass the pillar. Not a legal scholar, but from my understanding, that term reasonable person actually has a very strict legal definition and matters a lot. And I think Bent Bob here is being
Starting point is 00:08:34 very reasonable and asking, well, wait, now, hold on a second. Well, when I buy the physical game, like I own it right, but actually no. They've always been licenses. Same goes for movies. There are certain forms of media for which the license is very difficult, nigh, impossible to revoke.
Starting point is 00:08:58 But technically, you know that thing that comes up when you go to watch a movie, right? That's like, blah, blah, blah, not authorized for public demonstration and not authorized to be copied and blah, blah, blah. Well, that's the licensing agreement. That's the terms of the purchase that you've made. You have not purchased that movie. And that's, I think, the argument that Sony's trying to make here. That unless you purchase the entire... But then they need to be a lot more explicit about it.
Starting point is 00:09:30 Yes, they do. If I go to Steam, for example, and I go to my purchase history and I look at my invoices, it doesn't show, oh, you bought a license of Titanfall 2 for $4.99. on sale. It says you bought Titanfall 2 for $4.99 on sale. I'm going to double check, but I'm pretty sure it's called purchase history. Yeah. That too. I'm going to double check. I'm going to double check. Okay, I'm just firing up my steam interface. Is it under help?
Starting point is 00:09:59 I don't remember. Recent purchases. Yeah. Well, there you go. Recent purchases. Perfect. Thank you. There's a Steam support page called recent purchases. I don't know if the maybe the menu is called something else, but there's at least a Steam. Team support pages. And don't imagine for a second that good guy Valve sells you the game instead of a license. Good Guy Valve 100% offers you the right to pay for a license to the game. But to me, but to me, the question remains, what would a reasonable person think?
Starting point is 00:10:32 And I think that any gamer, especially one that's old enough to remember buying physical games, when the license was not easily revoked, right, would have the understanding very reasonably that once they have given the money, that's theirs, in perpetuity, completely, to do with what they want pretty much, right? That I could lend it, I could sell it, within the confines of what I'm licensed to do.
Starting point is 00:11:04 Like, I always found it funny when I was a kid because I just didn't really understand why that had to be in there, but how many end-user license agreements have that the product can't be used for terrorism? For instance, like, yeah, I'm going to use Winsip for terrorism. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:19 I guess you could. Warcraft 3, I promised not to use it for terrorism. Yeah, Warcraft 3 had a chat room, so yeah, okay. You can find a way. That's another, this was a pre-show topic. that's another Instagram account, I guess. How can this be used for terrorism? Let's, let's, you know what, let's avoid that one.
Starting point is 00:11:43 Let's avoid that one. Yeah, it's just, I don't know, this whole argument is crap. I think it's almost the, I just think it's a joke. I don't know. I also don't know necessarily what to do about it. I was driving here thinking about titles, and I knew this was going to be in the doc, and I was trying to think about the title from last week,
Starting point is 00:12:06 and I was like, okay, what if we did like, what do you do about this whole situation? It's like, I don't know. I don't know. I mean, right to representatives. To their credit, Edward Haycock and Jason Mendoza are doing something. Okay. They're taking Sony to court over it.
Starting point is 00:12:22 Yeah. That's pretty cool. Thank you. Yeah, we could be appreciative of the people that are fighting this fight because I alluded to this earlier. Sorry. I alluded to this earlier, but if Sony wins this, oh, we're cooked. Like, you effectively don't own anything that was licensed.
Starting point is 00:12:51 And it's like it's formalized now. Like, the fact that you already didn't, it matters, but formalizing this again now more recently matters, if that makes sense. This would leave zero ambiguity around the potential for a company to just pretty much on a whim say, hey, not yours anymore. Speaking of companies that on a whim decided you didn't own things anymore, remember how I went off on Team Viewer kicking me off of my Team Viewer 12 perpetual license? So they removed anywhere to download it from their website officially, if I recall correctly,
Starting point is 00:13:32 or it's like really, really hard to find now. It still works. I went to use it the other day and I was like, oh, my team view are 12. In spite of what they said, actually still works. Massive security vulnerabilities. I have no idea. But I was just like, I was curious. There is, okay, this is super.
Starting point is 00:13:51 So they didn't actually kick me. This is super off topic. We should probably come back to the topic. But I was talking to someone the other day about how they work with servers. I'm not going to get very specific, but they work with servers and they found a vulnerability where one of their servers was running a crypto miner and they didn't know. And when they were investigating to figure out like what happened, how did this get here, how long has been running, all that kind of stuff, there was a lot of fingerprints of AI stuff all over it. And you know how for a long time there's been like, this has probably already been a thing, which was another interesting idea to me.
Starting point is 00:14:26 You know how for a long time there's been like these crawling bots that just search the internet and like poke for vulnerabilities all over the place? for a long time, my assumption was the primary, there's lots of different goals, but the primary goals of those was like, I don't know, a botnet. Maybe you get in something interesting
Starting point is 00:14:43 and you grab some credentials or do whatever, but for most computers you get into, it's just going to be botnet kind of stuff. But the mass installation of temporary crypto miners all over the place is also interesting. Interesting time because profitability is really low,
Starting point is 00:14:58 but who cares if it's not your hardware and not your power? And at some point, it might go up. Yep, that too. Not financial advice. It's also as like, as little uses has been found for crypto,
Starting point is 00:15:11 it has consistently been used in places under siege. It was used largely at the beginning. I don't know if it still is, but largely at the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine and it's being used in Iran right now. Which is interesting.
Starting point is 00:15:27 Anyways, back to video games. Hold on, Andre B says, I mean, while we're at it, What would stop companies from selling you a license to a car rather than selling you a car? They just revoke your ability to have the car after X years, so you have to upgrade. Yeah, the difference is they call it a lease. Like, I don't even object to them selling licenses to a game. Call it that.
Starting point is 00:15:48 Just call it that. Because right now, you're calling it buy. You're calling it purchase. It feels like the Red Bull thing, but like, actually, I believe all of the people that believed the thing. Yeah. Because with Red Bull, it said Red Bull gives you wings. And some guy was like, oh, I actually thought it was going to give me wings. And then Red Bull got sued and they had to change their slogan.
Starting point is 00:16:09 I thought it was a bit of an urban myth. I thought it was a little different than that. I'll look it up. Okay, yeah. But that one, I remember being like, I mean, I was a kid when that happened. And I was like, that's stupid. That guy's stupid. This is silly.
Starting point is 00:16:21 In this case, no, I actually think there is a very reasonable assumption that I buy this thing and I own it. And no, I don't own, I guess it's like how revocable is the license, I guess. Because you're right, I don't own the IP of the thing, but I own the right to this, being able to access and play this thing moving forward. Ah, okay. No, the complaint was actually that it doesn't actually provide like a performance benefit. necessarily. Despite the lack of any reported scientific support for a claim that Red Bull provides more benefit to consumers than a caffeine tablet or a cup of coffee, defendants continue to market the product as a superior source of energy worthy of a premium price
Starting point is 00:17:13 as a court filing. Okay, so it's not the wings. No, it's not the wings. That's internet, like legend. It's more just that they were making specific claims with respect to the performance enhancement of it that were not backed up by any kind of research or evidence. And that seems fair enough. That's fair enough. Yeah. I mean, It's just like the McDonald's hot coffee thing, it turns out that actually was pretty reasonable because it was like way too hot. Like it wasn't just a dumb, dumb spilled coffee on themselves. It was like way, way, way, way, way too hot and dangerous.
Starting point is 00:17:46 I was like, okay, all right, all right, all right, right. I'm not saying that the legal system is perfect, but it's slightly less stupid than internet legend would have us believe. Yeah, like I've, there's been a couple times where I've like bought a movie off of YouTube or something like that. But I don't treat those types of things as permanent copies. The only reason why I do that, though, is because I've heard some of these things. Yeah, I've had stuff revoked from libraries before. So I treat anything that is... But the vast majority of people in my life have never heard of any of that stuff.
Starting point is 00:18:24 No. And engage with these things as permanent purchases. And you see it. I mean, it'll be so easy to find evidence of reasonable people thinking that they own the things they buy because of the just wave of outrage that occurs every time one of these library restrictions or library purchase revocations happens. I mean, even stuff that to me is maybe just because I have a technical understanding of how the platform works, there's stuff that's more obvious to me, like Netflix. I buy the subscription to Netflix. It's all you can eat of the entire platform. sometimes that platform changes. That's just, that's pretty obvious that I'm licensing the platform, not the individual movies.
Starting point is 00:19:07 I agree with that. You look at how upset people go and they go, I paid for Netflix, where's that content I saw last month? It's not here anymore. And again, I don't think they're being completely unreasonable. I just mean that they are, they're less reasonable than the people who buy something on, you know, on YouTube, or rent a movie on YouTube or buy a movie on YouTube or buy a song on iTunes or whatever, thinking that they own that thing. Anyway, I think a big difference there is that you're not buying Netflix.
Starting point is 00:19:35 You are subscribing to Netflix. Yeah. But even then, people get mad about it. All right, why don't we jump into another topic here? You want to pick one? This one's kind of funny. Oh, the I highlighted it. The doc is so long.
Starting point is 00:19:50 I have no idea where you're at. That's what she says. It's actually not showing any highlighted text. Really? Yeah. Oh, go out. Oh, there we go. Yeah, the one with the highlighting.
Starting point is 00:19:59 It wasn't before. It was probably lagging. I swear. It might have been lagging. Whoa. A man uses robot vacuum to covertly record his wife's affair. He wins a divorce settlement, but gets sentenced to prison for making an illegal recording. The husband lands behind bars after a countersuit over privacy rights, which would not happen everywhere.
Starting point is 00:20:21 It depends on if it's single or dual consent. Yeah. Like here, I think it's single party consent for recording conversations. but I think there's some nuance around expectations of privacy. Oh, okay. So it really depends. But anyway, a Taiwanese man is going to prison after recording his wife, having the affair. It all started on a vacation in 2023 when the husband discovered a used toothbrush in the bathroom of their holiday home.
Starting point is 00:20:48 Oh, wow, bougie. He became suspicious and checked the CCTV footage to find a strange man had driven his wife home. A few months later, the husband randomly opened an hour. to contact his wife through the vacuum speaker feature. That's a thing. Okay. Call them. But stumbled onto live footage from the vacuum's cameras,
Starting point is 00:21:07 showing his wife in bed with the man he saw on the CTTV footage months earlier. Really? The vacuum was just looking right there? Well, no, they have, like, a lot of them have, like, fish eye type lenses. And if they're... It just happened to be in the room, I guess. If they just happen to be in the room. Sure.
Starting point is 00:21:27 you recorded the entire thing as evidence and brought a suit against her. In Taiwan, cheating isn't a criminal offense, but infringing on someone's martial rights. Marital rights. Yeah, sure. I was like, that's weird. It's what I'm here for financial compensation. It's grounds for financial compensation. It's a breach of contract.
Starting point is 00:21:52 It's a breach of the marital contract. That makes sense. The husband initially tried to get the equipment. of $63,000 U.S. dollars, only ended up winning 19,000. But it doesn't stop there because recording someone without their consent is illegal in Taiwan and the wife countersued her husband for this exact violation. While the husband argued that the video was admitted as evidence so it wasn't illegal, it was still obtained illegally and the courts ruled in favor of the wife.
Starting point is 00:22:17 The judge sentenced him to five months in prison and he was fined $4,700 for the offense. So, this is, man, this one is fraught with gray areas. I think that on this show, we are pretty aligned that surveillance state bad. Yeah. I think that we are pretty aligned that covertly recording an intimate partner is creepo behavior. Big time. but she was banging someone else which is bad
Starting point is 00:23:01 um I feel like okay let's let's and the covert recording was using a camera that was installed in the place that it was installed knowingly by both parties functioning as intended knowingly by both parties that to me is the big one
Starting point is 00:23:21 the fact that it was there at all and everybody knew, to me, is where the gray area kind of becomes pretty gray. Someone said adultery is illegal, isn't it? We're not talking about the states. Yeah. We're trying what Taiwan. And we're also, I think we're just kind of like talking in general.
Starting point is 00:23:41 I'm not even, nothing that I said just now was necessarily legal terms. Yeah. It was all just kind of. No, that was a flow plane comment. I know. I know. About something else. Oh.
Starting point is 00:23:52 Yeah. It's interesting. Because like, if, what, do you, what do you do? Because I'm thinking like if you reverse the roles. Yeah. Reverse the general roles here. There's a higher likelihoodness for being afraid of the violent reactions of the other person. So say you're there in person, you might want to snap a picture and then run so that you can get authorities involved and get things handled. But now you go to jail for five months.
Starting point is 00:24:30 And like, are we, are we, are we, and if he didn't have the recording, he wouldn't have been able to prove it. This is my point. And, and, but that's his point too. It's like, okay, you admitted it as evidence. So clearly, like,
Starting point is 00:24:47 you clearly, we all agree I needed it. If he didn't do any form of recording, then it's just, what's he going to do, ask for permission? He said, she said, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Beep, beep. Say over the speaker, please check your phone.
Starting point is 00:24:58 By the way, are you chill if I record this? Just over the vacuum speaker. I get it. He's way better than me, but I still find this pretty upsetting. Oh, man. Like at that point, what, do we put the robot on a chair in the corner? I just, I'm trying to figure out sort of what the... I'm trying to figure out what he or...
Starting point is 00:25:24 I think your point is really good. What if this was reversed? What if it was? she like let's let's let's not worry too much about who was the guy who was the girl because i mean if you look at a lot of media movies and whatnot sure the response is to barge in the room and get angry yeah the response is often the guy barging into the room and getting angry and that's also portrayal in the media i mean it's not it's not that black and white what is the reality of this situation like i think there's a not i think there's a non zero number of people who could literally be standing
Starting point is 00:25:55 with the key in their hand, hearing what's going on inside, and not be able to turn that key and see it. No, I think that's legitimately probably most. Like, I suspect there's, I mean, it's fight or flight at that point, right? Because so what's he, what was he supposed to do? Especially if he, and, and remember,
Starting point is 00:26:14 too, we're taking his word for it, that he came across it, right? That he happened, that he wasn't like, checking the camera all the time, which, man, I can tell you, I don't, I don't check in on the cameras at my house. very often. And I have never checked in on a camera that was in a bedroom for any reason.
Starting point is 00:26:33 You know, one line that does throw me, though. Yeah. In quotes, he recorded the entire thing as evidence. I genuinely wonder how much that plays into it. The entire thing. Did you need to record the entire thing? I mean, you got to be sure, right? Like, if they finish, if they don't finish, is it cheating?
Starting point is 00:27:05 Yeah, I think so. So I don't think you can do like a soaking argument. They didn't finish defense. Well, you see, you see, your honor, it was just some light edging. That was pre, that was pre! There may have been seminal fluid, but no live sperm was in there. Does that mean if you're snipped, it's just not... Interesting.
Starting point is 00:27:37 It's not cheating. You just never have sex again. Oh my God. But yeah, I do, I do wonder like... John, BR, this has not been a technology show for years. Like, five, yeah, yeah. Five months in prison and almost 5K, when the entire divorce settlement only ended up being 19K,
Starting point is 00:27:59 really makes me wonder, like, Oh, he's not the short end of the stick. Is it because it was the entire thing? That's rough. Or the short stick in the end? Or wait. Whoa. I mean, he's in prison.
Starting point is 00:28:09 He didn't get that. Didn't get that. Well, he might in prison. Maybe. I'm not digging that. Sorry, can't resist. Nokey doesn't want to timestamp this.
Starting point is 00:28:21 You must, Nokey. But yeah, specifically calling out entire. Makes me think maybe it was like deemed as excessive. Um, I don't see how it would, look, I don't know. I have no idea. I don't operate within any legal apparatus.
Starting point is 00:28:38 let alone even reside. Exactly. And that has notably different structure that are. I got a I got a sorry I love this. On Tom's I'm looking at the title and then you just see the like subtitle. I enjoy that. Man I got to say at the the gall of her counter suing. Wild. Like if like let's say let's say I had an affair and I got busted because Yvonne, you know, found something on the robot cameras. And let's say I knew that, like, she wasn't supposed to be looking at that. Going after her for doing what she had to do to catch me when I, when I was doing something bad, just feels like the most broken, like, personality disorder type of response. But then the flip side of it is, you know, if she were to be checked,
Starting point is 00:29:40 checking in on me and like I wasn't doing anything. Like I'd be I'd be super upset about that because why don't you trust me? But then like you don't get to be like why don't you trust me when you weren't trustworthy. You know what I mean? I have had a situation and this this wasn't a trust problem I don't think but I have had a situation where everyone was trying to get in contact with me and I wasn't responding. I think I was like I I'm assuming the era that this happened. I was in like a Tarkov match and was just like focused and didn't notice the messages. He's actually very hard to get in touch with sometimes. I will ping him on like three, four different platforms and sometimes not here back.
Starting point is 00:30:21 So she got on the robot vacuum. I've had to call Emma before to reach him. That's true. I think it's been a bit, but that is true. But yeah, she got on the robot vacuum. And in order to call Emma, I had to call Yvonne because I didn't have her number because why would I have Luth Girlfriend's number? That's fair.
Starting point is 00:30:38 He doesn't even have a chair in the corner of his room. That's also true. Got to get dressed, standing up. Okay. She ran the robot vacuum into my chair. That's so funny. So it wasn't like, it wasn't like a, she was just trying to be like, hey. And then I looked down at it.
Starting point is 00:31:02 She put a full navvy on you. I looked down at it and the camera's on and it just starts like, she's like shaking it trying to get my attention. Because it didn't, I don't think it had. speaker out. Nice. I think it had speaker in. You could hear, but I don't think you could talk out from it. But yeah, she rammed my chair.
Starting point is 00:31:17 And that made me, like, jump really hard because I thought I was home alone. And, like, birds are definitely not big enough to do that. And, yeah, I got my attention, but a little, little different. Yeah. So if you, like, man, I'm trying to, like, I'm trying to, I don't know. I just, I can't wrap my brain around someone who has the gall to turn around and go. dare you catch me. No, I do agree.
Starting point is 00:31:44 I am looking more into this. And the like entire thing actually keeps going. So it wasn't just, uh, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, where are the notes on this? Here we go. Yeah. The footage from the robot vacuum's camera showed the wife's changing her clothes, getting into bed with the same person he had previously identified. And then after all that was done, walking around the house naked,
Starting point is 00:32:10 while the other man comfortably sank into their sofa. So this wasn't like... Clearly this was a high degree of comfort, ongoing thing. So maybe that figured into it. Maybe it did. Because then she couldn't make the argument it was a one-time thing. So recording the whole thing may have been very necessary. To prove the dynamic.
Starting point is 00:32:28 The other tough part is like I'm sitting here thinking, is it excessive? But in the moment, I could understand feeling like you need to get everything you can. I could see it either way. I could see not being able to open the lock. I could see not being able to look away. Yeah. in which case the robot was it on a chair in the corner?
Starting point is 00:32:45 I'm just asking questions. I kind of wonder. Like again, back to the like, we had no way of knowing that this was, this was a recording that I didn't know about. Like, with the vacuum following them around, like I... Yeah, the sinking into the sofa thing is...
Starting point is 00:33:03 Is interesting. Unless the sofa's like in the same room. Like, is, it's like a loft type situation? Okay, here's a question. Would you pay, would you pay a $4,700 fine and go to jail for five months to find out and end a relationship where they're cheating? Yeah. Okay, well, then maybe it's an okay deal for him. Yeah. I think it's stupid that he had to go to jail. I think if he had been fined, that's fine, but I think going to jail for this is ridiculous. I kind of agree. Like, because not just that, like, he's not a criminal record now. Like, come on. That is insane.
Starting point is 00:33:37 I didn't really think about that. Yeah. And your criminal record, Like, I remember having this conversation with a border guard once. Don't ask me why. But they told me that smuggling firecrackers over the border, it doesn't, like, it doesn't go down as sneaking firecrackers for your little brother's birthday. It goes down as smuggling explosives over an international border. And I was like, oh, that's really interesting. What a conversation we're having that's unrelated to any of the circumstances right now.
Starting point is 00:34:07 And in the same way, like, his criminal record is going to be. to say, like, covertly recording someone, which maybe they'll ask. And you can be like, well, it was actually this. And I was like pretty, you know, justified. It wasn't something that I set out to do, but I like kind of had to. But maybe they just don't. Maybe they just put his resume at the bottom of the pile. And that sucks. What a stupid reason to be overlooked. Especially in today's economy. Now I don't know what the job market is like in Taiwan, but if it's anything even remotely what it's like in North America,
Starting point is 00:34:46 job market bad for almost every industry, not technically every industry, but almost every, especially if you're in Canada. I don't know, man, I'm just trying to think of like, it's so hard to put myself in the mindset of someone in like a suspicious relationship because I do peek in on Yvonne on the cameras from time to time, but I do it in like a, in like a teasy way. Like I'll, I'll be like, hi, I miss you.
Starting point is 00:35:16 And I'll send like a really creepily like zoomed up shot of the back of her head sitting at her computer. Just wanted to see you. And like, in the context of our relationship, I promise you. Everybody's got stuff like that. I promise you. It's not, it's like not weird and not creepy. We both have each other's phone pins and using. each other's phones interchangeably.
Starting point is 00:35:37 Like my battery is almost dead. Oh, take mine. I'm heading home anyway. I'll take yours. I'll charge it. I'll use it when I get there. Like, it really doesn't matter. But like,
Starting point is 00:35:46 if I was in like a suspicious mindset, would I, would I be willing to, like, look at the cameras for that? I don't know if I could. I think I'd be, I think I might be the guy with the key in the hand. I don't know if I could.
Starting point is 00:36:13 I feel like I'm usually pretty good at knowing what I would do in scenarios. I think it's impossible to know until you're in said scenarios. But I think I've usually guessed pretty appropriately. And I would want to confirm and then I would want to leave fast, even if it's my place. Would you confirm in person or if there happened to be a camera? Would you just take the convenient approach? Well, I'd want evidence too.
Starting point is 00:36:42 But I would never, okay, here's a line. like every camera in our house Yvonne knows about and helped me select the locations for and they're very obvious and they do like the blue thingy yep I leave all the lights on yeah
Starting point is 00:36:53 and they're not in any areas where you would have an expectation of perfect privacy like bathroom bedrooms in fact the vast majority of them are just pointed at entrances and hallways with the idea being that
Starting point is 00:37:09 you know in the event of like a theft or something like that or the way we end up using it more than that is like, when did I last have my keys? It's like finding things that we've misplaced. A lot of people use them for pets. But like, okay, would you, oh man, here, oh man, we've got a whole other level.
Starting point is 00:37:26 Okay, what if they installed the camera and you had access to it? And they knew. They gave you access to the camera for some reason. Would you, do you think there's any difference between a camera that you both agreed would be installed and like you installed it and you're accessing it versus like
Starting point is 00:37:42 they installed this camera. for the dog. They put like a dog camera in. Would you just completely guilt-free if they were just like on the couch sinking into it in a relaxed naked state with someone? Would you just guilt-free go into the dog camera that they know they're right in front of?
Starting point is 00:37:59 Like is that... Where are the freaking lines here, people? Yeah, I mean... Charge nuclei says, ha-ha-doggy style. This is... Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha. sometimes you just got to turn the brain off. Oh my goodness.
Starting point is 00:38:26 I don't know. I have fairly like, I don't know. I would be okay with that. And one of the reasons why I would be okay with that is because I know Emma would be very okay with that. If I did something, it's scorched earth and death. And I have understood that and that is okay. Oh, so you guys just have an understanding that there is. no expectation of
Starting point is 00:38:58 destruction snuckery around and if something goes down you're you're forfeiting your everything basically and it's like all right interesting okay but then I
Starting point is 00:39:12 see this is such a funny thing but that's like I don't know where the law is on that like in regards to our relationship I you know I would not to be clear but if I was going to I would expect that if She knew that she would go to the ends of the earth to verify.
Starting point is 00:39:33 Yep. I don't think she's very suspicious of me doing anything like that to be clear. I mean, you haven't cooked chicken for anyone, so it should be fine. And I stay away from that. It's very careful on that one. He can't cook chicken for people and not expect it to go all the way. Like, it's a 100% success recipe. So he's got to keep that power.
Starting point is 00:39:51 Maybe she checks my credit card statement for my credit card statement for, for chicken purchases. I mean, the chicken's fine. As long as you don't get all the spices and everything, then it's probably okay. Then you're just proteining, you know, to make big muscles. Which she can enjoy too. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:40:09 Yeah, you can both enjoy them. More than me, really. Yeah, see? Really, it's for her, all the chicken. Yeah. So there's the pre-relationship chicken, which really gets everything going. Right.
Starting point is 00:40:22 And then there's the long-term chicken. Right, yeah. Sure, it's a little blander, but, you know. Yeah. It's, but it sustains you. Fules the, anyways. Yeah, no, she, I mean, she's made it very clear that, like, if there was, if there was reasonable strong suspicion, she's going to do what she needs to do to verify, and then
Starting point is 00:40:41 it's scorched earth from there. And at the end of the day, like, what it comes... So I would just take the same... What it comes down to is what your boundaries are. Like, I knew when I said the thing where I'll, I'll peer in on the cameras with Yvonne, I knew that there were going to be people for whom that's, like, very triggering. And like to them that's like red flag, red flag, red flag, red flag. And like, but in the context of our relationship.
Starting point is 00:41:02 I don't think yours is lack of trust. No, it's not. And she is allowed to do the exact same things. We both have all the credentials to every camera that anyone one of us would ever be near. And it is not an important thing to us. I think it's like the phone thing. I mean, you've talked about that. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:41:20 Yeah, no, that's like I'm the more like boomer I get, the more I realize that like sharing your phone pin is kind of like how our parents shared an email address like too crazy right and in the same way I feel like younger people are looking at the way Yvonne and I will just share phone pins or use the same phone and like that's fucking crazy we like I I don't know hers but only due to being forgetful
Starting point is 00:41:48 she's told it to me a bunch of time I just keep forgetting and then I think she knows my I've told her mine she just might have forgot as well I don't know but it's like I don't care I have a phone I don't need to use her phone and like I don't know maybe she doesn't have chess installed what am I gonna do
Starting point is 00:42:05 I don't know I know she doesn't have all the infinite scrolling apps uninstalled so there's multiple downsides here but yeah the email thing I just always thought that was messy yeah yeah and I don't think sharing a phone pin is like messy
Starting point is 00:42:23 It's like it's a computer It's a log into a computer Whatever but I think Well we're pretty much the same generation right So I think to us that boundary makes sense I just don't But no to a lot of people Your phone is like you might as well
Starting point is 00:42:38 In full boomer fashion I don't understand I understand the privacy aspect But like I don't care It's it's I don't think it's about that I think it's just like It's just a boundary thing It's just like your phone is your phone, whereas we grew up with a phone being a shared thing. And it wasn't until almost adulthood that a phone became a thing that belonged only to you.
Starting point is 00:43:04 I even see it differently. And this is still a shared thing like you're talking about. And there's a lot more shared versions of these when we were growing up. But I see it as a computer. Because like if she's borrowing my phone, she's probably borrowing it to look something up. Or do something. Or take a picture. Take a picture.
Starting point is 00:43:21 Go online and Google something. Or I'm driving and she's messaging somebody on my behalf and it's a lot easier if it comes from my phone and then it's not confusing for anybody. For sure. And maybe, you know, adjust the maps or do something. I'm thinking usually when something like that happens, I'm handing it to her unlocked because as I hand her the phone, I'm just thumbing the fingerprint. But I'm just doing that to make it easier. I think she knows the code. I mean, I bet you know the code.
Starting point is 00:43:50 Oh, really? It's not the work one. No, I know. That's so dumb. So while I am saying that, you know, I have no problem, being at a level of trust in a like 22-year committed relationship that we can just look at each other's phones anytime, I'm not advocating. for just like every bro who's ever known you to be able to guess your pin. Oh man, I had something recently where a friend of mine that like, yeah.
Starting point is 00:44:32 I wouldn't have had an interaction like this with in genuinely probably a decade. Asked me what the password to a certain device was. And I was like, you know it. And then they walked up to me to it went, wump, right in. It's been like easily a decade since that happened. Look, security through obscurity. Security. I'm not going to be saying why I'm not.
Starting point is 00:44:54 I know, but I don't, I do know. That, the, the, the, the phone is one thing. Um, to be fair. Genuinely, I think there's like three people including myself that would know that one. To be fair. Okay. Uh, I mean, sure. All right.
Starting point is 00:45:18 Keffuddled says, is it normal for couples to hide things that much to make sharing a phone that big of a deal? See, that's the thing is to me it never was. But I remember visiting the home of someone who I worked with at some point. I'm going to keep it intentionally vague that way. And we were there. And for whatever reason, we had to access the SO's computer to, like, change. It was like logged into something to do something. Okay?
Starting point is 00:45:45 And for the purposes of making a video, we needed access to change a setting on that thing. And that was the one that it was connected to. And they didn't know. And I was like, so you don't know like you forget? Like, no, we do not allow each other to know the password of each other's computers. And I was just like, okay. And like if I want to do something secretly. How do you screen melting prank each other?
Starting point is 00:46:19 Yeah. But like, where's the fun? If I want to do something secretly. There's very non-nefarious ways to do something secretly. Yeah. Yeah. Like an anniversary present or, you know, whatever. There's lots of good reasons to snuck about doing something.
Starting point is 00:46:32 There are still ways to do that. Well, not for me. Well, yeah, not for you. Yeah. That is tough. My wife is the financial controller of my life. So anything that I want to do that's a secret has to not involve money. So that's tough.
Starting point is 00:46:47 Or at least not involve electronic money. It would have to involve cash money. Yeah. Or you'd have to like arrange for something. someone else to do it for you and stuff, which gets all weird and complicated. Honestly, her 40th is also coming up, coincidentally. And at this point, I was just like, would you like this? Would you like this?
Starting point is 00:47:08 Would you like this? Would you like this? Would you like some combination of them? Or would you like all of them? I'm just... I did the pre-selecting. You can go from there. I put the thought into it.
Starting point is 00:47:21 Yeah, yeah. Now you just tell me which one you like the best. that's not bad that is not bad no it is not 80085 don't don't don't I'm not gonna confirm or deny anymore but it is not 80085
Starting point is 00:47:37 that's the safest way to be what the heck are we supposed to be talking about robot vacuum spying forget it I'm over it all right GoPro okay I want to preface this one with that I walked on to WANSet today
Starting point is 00:47:54 having been actually working on one of my birthday presents for Yvonne. So we moved into our house a few years ago. And ever since we moved in, we've actually made multiple videos on the subject. Our smart home lighting situation has been an absolute cluster bomb. By the time she has been on this earth for 41 years, out of womb, for 40, 40 years, I will have fixed it. it will be done.
Starting point is 00:48:26 Over the last week, and so I'm going somewhere with this, I have been in pretty much a news black hole because I have installed, like, somewhere between 60 and 70 light switches and done most of the software configuration for the smart home for, I'd say, well over half of those.
Starting point is 00:48:46 I've been on, like, an absolute tear installing these new Inevelli millimeter wave smart switches pretty much flipping everywhere. I also got a couple of separate sensors from Apollo that are really cool, so that'll allow me to work in places where the light switches don't happen to be somewhere useful. Dude, once you get,
Starting point is 00:49:08 it is such a pain in the butt to, like, learn home assistant. It's so powerful, but it's so, like, it's powerful in the same way that, like, Photoshop is powerful. Like, it's powerful if you know what you're doing, and if you don't know what you're doing, it's just like, uh, I have a huge tangent here,
Starting point is 00:49:28 but I want to let you finish. But anyway, once you get it, once you get it going, man, it's like magic. So depending on the time of day, depending on how bright it is
Starting point is 00:49:37 from the sun, and depending on, um, like my position in the, like kitchen, like, uh, kitchen eating look,
Starting point is 00:49:45 like family room, like mega room there, all the lights will turn on at like different level. and it's like super awesome and it knows it knows where I am and you can like group sensors
Starting point is 00:49:58 so as long as any one of the sensors in the kitchen hits you then it like knows you're in the kitchen and like during the day I'll have like the big potlights on but then at night I'll just have like the under cabinet and above cabinet so it's like more chill vibes
Starting point is 00:50:11 it's I'm like I'm finally getting like really into it and so where I'm coming to with this is I walked on set and I saw that Markiplier is mired in some kind of a controversy right now. And so that is the only context I have. It was in a thumbnail and title on that screen over there, and that's all I know.
Starting point is 00:50:34 So take this for what it is. And Luke, go ahead. Yeah. So I know a little bit about this. I haven't watched a single video on it, so I might be missing some context. But yeah, I'll go through some of the notes and I'll add some understandings of my own. GoPro, the company that makes action cameras, is being bought by Starman, an optical photonics firm that plans to fold its AI data center transceivers into the GoPro portfolio. GoPro was down 96% prior to the merger announcement.
Starting point is 00:51:05 GoPro has been unprofitable for the last four consecutive years facing heavy pressure and increasing competition from Chinese action camera manufacturers. I mean, I'm sure you've heard of like Insta360 and DJI and stuff like that and the handheld cameras they have. taking the world by storm. Charles Tabuli. Tabelli. Debelli. They even put a thing. It's literally in here.
Starting point is 00:51:39 I love this man. The worst part is I read the pronunciation thing. I just read it wrong. Yeah. I can't use the word for him anymore, but I love him. I might have done better just not reading the pronunciation thing, which I appreciate that they put in there. I just failed.
Starting point is 00:51:56 Roll the one. The CEO of Starman Optical's parent company says that advanced optics and imaging are essential to AI. Yeah, sure. National security and the broader economy. Most of the merger's press releases stress the point of U.S. optical expertise and IP, framing the deal as a way to cut reliance on Chinese manufacturing and secure domestic supply and production. And in defense of that statement, I have heard this as a major concern for quite a while. and it comes down to national security because, you know, for drones, you might need cameras and
Starting point is 00:52:33 stuff. This is like actually a pretty big deal. But fun fact, Markiplier has been wrapped up in a bit of a scandal when he started buying GoPro shares in July and has become the single largest investor in the company owning 8.5% of it. He has said publicly that he wasn't aware of the merger and he isn't necessarily a huge fan of the direction of the company's heading in. And I have seen in multiple places that he apparently largely did it because he just really likes their cameras. He thinks they're a household name. I know he specifically called them out as like a Kleenex type deal where like a lot of people look at an action camera and just think, oh, a GoPro. And that's actually fair.
Starting point is 00:53:15 That does happen a lot. And he thought that because of those things that they were undervalued. They still had that, you know, name, base market share. They still have actually very good cameras and stuff like that. So he thought they were undervalued. So he jumped in and bought. And then this merger thing happened.
Starting point is 00:53:34 And the stock price went through the moon. So some people were like, whoa, well, insider trading. But. Yeah. So as someone who's kind of, there is more to it than this.
Starting point is 00:53:45 Gone through headlines about them, just being believed. And that's not a really, irresponsible headline. But okay. It is a little wild theory. There is more to it than this though. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:53:57 Like if I look up Markiplier on the YouTube's, um, I, I heard about this. I don't know a ton of details on this. This video right here, $700 versus $7,000 camera, GoPro mission, whatever review. Um, there's like a pre-order using a code and you get 10% off,
Starting point is 00:54:20 blah, blah, blah, whatever thing. But it doesn't seem, or even mentioned GoPro in the video you can use their code here I'm so good at being sponsored as far as my understanding goes I think I think I don't know I think relax that he owned
Starting point is 00:54:38 he was like the biggest shareholder of the company when he made this video and there wasn't like a investment disclosure I own this thing thing there was just a sign that he was being sponsored so I know that's like part of it There's a lot of other things going on. If you really want to know what's happening here,
Starting point is 00:54:56 currently this is not the most greatest source for this. It's literally in the description, is it? I saw it in the description, but that could be, that could have been edited. Wasn't that just sponsor? I didn't think that was ownership. I did say I'm the largest shareholder, but I have no idea if that was altered later.
Starting point is 00:55:12 Ah, right here. Interesting. And also, this is a big part of the reason why I was saying, I don't know. A disclosure in a video description is not enough. So. Well, I mean, this is also a, perfectly timed 1337 video
Starting point is 00:55:28 and he might say it somewhere in there. I haven't watched it. Scrappy DP says it was altered later after the controversy. Okay. So yeah, yeah, Rillian says he talked to Philip DeFranco saying he didn't know
Starting point is 00:55:44 he was the largest shareholder until the article came out. Yeah. That part doesn't matter. You don't have to say you're the biggest shareholder. You have to say that you are invested at all. I'm Derek. Says, Linus, you'd know about that, right? Yes, sponsorship disclosures are very important and something that we've taken very seriously for a long time, sometimes to our detriment.
Starting point is 00:56:03 The fact that we disclose all of our sponsorships has created, as far as I can tell, a perception that LMG is like more sold out, more sponsored than other channels that do not disclose their sponsorships properly. And it's been, yes, it's been a source of frustration for me over the years that by disclosing things properly, we end up in a situation where people assume that we're worse
Starting point is 00:56:32 when actually what we're trying to do is do things properly and above board. It's very, very frustrating. Anyway, if he actually didn't know, then... It's possible he didn't know that you have to do an investment disclosure? I... If you knew to do a...
Starting point is 00:56:54 sponsorship disclosure. You might think investment would be one up from that. You might think that, I mean, look, I don't, I don't, I, I, I, I've exchanged like a half a dozen text messages with him ever. I don't know the guy. He has overall seemed like a pretty upstanding character over the years. I think so. A voice for good, a voice for a reason. For that, for that reason, I would lean more on the side of, like, benefit of the doubt,
Starting point is 00:57:24 assume good intentions even if the actions were not ideal. But like I said, when we were going into this, I don't know a ton about it. And I mean, hey, congrats to him. If he doesn't like the direction the company is going, as he said, he can certainly sell the shares and apparently they're worth a lot more guy. They skyrocketed, yeah. Let's see. Oh, man.
Starting point is 00:57:45 Look at the, this is the five day. Yeah, Avalon says in his interview, he said he thought sponsorship was enough because there was no investment option on YouTube. that seems like something they should rectify. Boom. Nice. Boom, dude. If I just look at five days, it's up 177.6%.
Starting point is 00:58:05 Nice. So that worked out for them. Get out while you can. Here's a question for you. This is not condoning, endorsing, endorsing, being okay with, etc. But does it move the needle for you? Which?
Starting point is 00:58:16 If I'm watching a thing and someone is sponsored versus someone is invested versus someone is both, does it affect? how you see the video or read the content or whatever it is. And how does it affect it? They all affect it differently. So as someone who works in the industry and has for a very, very long time, I feel like this is one of those situations where I can say,
Starting point is 00:58:42 I am extremely well informed on this subject. Like there's a lot of stuff we talk about on this show that I'm like, yeah, not a legal expert, not financial advice, blah, blah, blah. When it comes to being an influencer and being an investor. Reviewing a piece of technology. and making videos about technology, not always reviewing. Very important. I am an expert. I know a lot about this. So here's what I would take out of it. If something is sponsored, I assume several things. I assume that the brand had expectations of some kind of messaging or some kind of feature set that would be shown. I assume that that brand has an opportunity to review the final. content before it is published. I assume that the person making the video was paid.
Starting point is 00:59:32 That is just what it is. So with that in mind, I often see this comment on sponsored videos that we upload where someone will go, well, this kind of felt like an ad for that product. You figured it out. You cracked the code. A sponsored video is an ad. And they can be fun to watch. They can be educational.
Starting point is 00:59:56 they can be whatever. We work hard to, to the best of our ability, make them educational and entertaining and not misleading. Do you spill water all over yourself? Oh, so that's a very, very old bottle. Yeah. And that's a new lid. And there was a changeover like four years ago,
Starting point is 01:00:17 and they're not quite compatible. Just tighten it down tighter. Then it'll be fine. You got the strength for it. Chicken, chicken strength. Every once in a while, Dan delivers me a, a bottle that tries to assassinate me. So,
Starting point is 01:00:28 so with that said, though, anything, anything that is sponsored, by definition, has those elements to it. All right. Now let's talk. Oh, and...
Starting point is 01:00:41 Investment. There are, there are aspects of a sponsored video that I would like to believe, but that I don't always trust. So, for example, in the FTC guidelines around sponsorships, you are technically not allowed to say anything
Starting point is 01:00:53 that you do not, to the best of your knowledge, believe. So even if I'm sponsored by, let's say, Dell, right? Look at that, look at that shiny little XPS logo there that I have hidden behind our water bottle. That's actually, maybe we should move these. Dell does kind of pay for that placement. Do we just leave like one pillar?
Starting point is 01:01:08 Yeah, just leave the one. Never good. Now the Dell's are back. Okay, so if I'm sponsored, say, for example, by Dell. Yeah. Mr. Michael Dell, good buddy of mine. Just kidding. You can barely see, but I do like these.
Starting point is 01:01:17 Never met him. Okay, there. You're not allowed to say that if you don't actually like it. Oh, I do, though. Even if you're sponsored. Okay. So when you're sponsored, you can say, You know, Dell claims that the XPS whatever is 100% waterproof, just like vese shoes.
Starting point is 01:01:31 You know, whatever. You can say the talking points, but if you say, I think this keyboard is outstanding, or I like how large the track pad is. I do. FTC guidelines, you can't do that unless you actually do those things. But a lot of people either don't know that or don't care. And so the lines get really, really blurry. And I think that is where, back to your comment that you made about review,
Starting point is 01:01:59 that is where the concept of a sponsored review has come from. Which is... Not a thing. Yeah. That literally... That literally is not a thing that exists. A review that is sponsored is not real. Which is why we called them showcases.
Starting point is 01:02:21 However... Yeah. His video was not actually sponsored. Oh, right. So there was no direct exchange of funds for talking points. So it's actually not an ad. Well, wait, do you know that? He's invested, yeah, it was an investment. He just had no, like, there was no investment drop down. But sometimes you do get sponsored by the- It sounds like that wasn't what happened from chat. Okay. So now let's get into talking about a company that you're invested in. And there are lots and lots. It's becoming way more common for online media personality. to be invested in companies. I'm invested in a couple myself. Framework computer,
Starting point is 01:03:00 Eshtek, who makes HexOS. Those are, I think those are the only two. I hope I'm not forgetting anything. Yeah, those two. All right. So we upload content that is very, very close to a review of framework. I would say pretty much a review. Sure. In that case, if I... Don't you just actually, isn't there like a... I don't think we use the word review just because the word review is very sacred to me. Trying to stay away from it. Yeah. Um, but it bears a lot of similarities to a review for sure, whether we use the word to describe it or not. Oh yeah, five years ago, it's probably, might be before your investment. Yeah. Yeah. And so, the way that I would interpret that is, okay, pinch of salt, grain of salt, chunk of salt,
Starting point is 01:03:54 they are That, that, got them. Yeah, full review. There you go. Two years ago. So full, so, and it was for, wait,
Starting point is 01:04:08 is that the one that I didn't prepare though? I don't know. I think that's why. Hold on, wait for it. Like. Oh, Lordy. Whoa. I think I didn't write this one.
Starting point is 01:04:22 I think that was like the context. Also, investment disclosure. We put money all over the screen. So, can you just skip ahead? I think it might have been Alex who hosted this. Oh, I was, uh, I clicked on a thing I was, was like on. Do you even YouTube, brother? Alex Clark is one of the hosts.
Starting point is 01:04:40 So yeah. Yeah, okay. Yeah, this is the one that was like done when I was on vacation or something or I like recused myself or something. Yeah, it was a whole thing. All right. Cool. Look at that guy.
Starting point is 01:04:49 So whenever I see something where there's an investment stake involved, you have to, you just have to understand. understand the levers, right? Like, there's no direct exchange of money. There's no formal agreement for here are the talking points and here's the money that you get. Bag of money, talking points, done deal, but I have heard of agreements. I don't think you have any of these, but I have heard of agreements where people get... Like ambassadorship agreements and things like that. Yeah, you buy into the company, but you get a higher percentage of the company than you would expect for that much money because you are supposed to be some form of brand ambassador or they get access to, uh,
Starting point is 01:05:26 I don't know. Like maybe you own a sports stadium because you're a billionaire and that product is now available through your stadium or something. Sure. Like there's some form of agreement. Yes. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:05:41 So in those situations, I just, I kind of look at it and I go, okay, using my own functioning brainstem, how compromised do they appear to be? do I trust this person? And are they giving, based on what I already know about it, because I will always tell you guys every single time, multiple sources, multiple sources, multiple sources, it's so important, right? So based on the information that I have from my multiple sources, based on what I can deduce for myself,
Starting point is 01:06:15 do they seem to be representing the product fairly and honestly? And are they disclosing their relationship? That's really, really important. because I actually am very interested in the take of someone who is invested in the product. Sure. In fact, I would be, in some ways, way more interested in market pliers take on this GoPro camera as someone who has spent hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars supporting this company than someone who bought one camera for 500 bucks.
Starting point is 01:06:45 Honestly, in a certain sense. I heard that he invested, looked up why, saw a video. I don't remember, I don't know if it was his, I don't know if it was an interview with him or whatever, with him saying, oh, I bought it because they are like the Kleenex of cameras and I think they're undervalued. And I was like, cool. And then I went on with the rest of my day. Yeah. And that's very interesting. Yeah, it is. And I would want to know that. Yeah, for sure. So those are, those are the things that I would be looking out for or that I would be thinking about when I see sponsored content or I see content that is done by someone who is invested in the company. You just want to know that. Things are going to get murkier. Like as more and more YouTubers own more and more companies? Yeah. I mean,
Starting point is 01:07:33 there's already arguably the first YouTuber billionaire. Yeah. Like Jimmy's, Jimmy Donaldson, Mr. Beast's company, has got to be worth a billion dollars at this point. I don't know that for sure, but it's like it's got to be. If you include all the subsidiaries and amusement park and food.
Starting point is 01:07:50 Yeah, whatever. Beast Industries, I think he calls it, Is that right? Beast Enterprises? I think it's Beast Industries. Go out of my way to not pay attention. So with that in mind,
Starting point is 01:08:00 people are going to need media literacy around this. So I'm happy to talk about this anytime you guys want, but take all of this for what it is as well. I could potentially have an interest in people being less, um, I'm struggling for the word, less analytical. I could potentially have an interest in people being more just accepting of influencers
Starting point is 01:08:29 like owning stuff. One of the reasons, like I supported your supported not financially, to be clear. I supported as in like he was asking around before he did the framework investment. Yeah, I literally let the company vote over whether like I should be allowed to do it or not. If I remember correctly, I rather publicly voted yes. And my reason for it was like what is the what is the, how? I'm going to manipulate the audience angle of this thing. And it's like, what?
Starting point is 01:08:57 You make people want things that are more repairable? Okay. So for me, I was like, whatever. Cool. And your whole thing was like, if they deviate from the mission, that I'm out anyway. So it's like, okay, well, you're publicly holding that. So the audience could hold you to that for one thing,
Starting point is 01:09:17 flailing arms. And then also, what is the thing that you could drive? What is the idea that you would drive? that could indirectly or directly cause sales of that laptop or that product and it's repairability. And then it's like, cool, whatever. I have no issue with this at all. Sounds good. Go for it.
Starting point is 01:09:38 So here's where things get a little complicated today. What if framework got purchased by like a defense contractor? Yeah, that is interesting. Would that change, you know, maybe not for you, maybe not for Dan. I don't know, but for someone. Do they still hold their repairability? mission thing? Let's say they do. Let's say they do, but, you know, they're involved in a, in a, conflict. Like, let's say, let's say they're involved in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, and I'm
Starting point is 01:10:05 not going to tell you what side they're on. Well, just what if they were. Would that, does that make a difference one way, the other way, both ways? Doesn't matter. This is a defense contractor. Yeah, and remember, defense doesn't always mean defense. Department of War, baby. that's I mean that's way to not being able to know what side is insane so like no I guess because not being able to know what side is crazy okay but if you did know what side and it was the side you supported then probably fine yeah I'm fine with it interesting okay okay yeah I mean honestly I would encourage it I'm a big supporter of Canada being involved in the drone industry in Ukraine these are and everyone's going to have their personal lines right like
Starting point is 01:10:51 Luke's line might not be the same as my line might not be the same is your line. And I can respect a lot of other lines when it comes to that, to be honest. Yeah. Like, I get it. Like, I understand why someone might just not want anything to do with any company that makes something that kills another human being. I think that's reasonable. Like my, um, no, no blood relation, but my, my, my opa, um, talked about how as a pacifist, he was forced during the second world war to charge at the enemy. And if he turned around, he would be shot. Yeah. Um, and, And so what he did was he just went a few degrees above the horizon and just fired and ran. And he says with a very high degree of confidence, he never killed anybody.
Starting point is 01:11:37 And that was more important to him than his own life. But he also didn't want to throw his life away. And, you know, if someone like that were to say to me, like, oh, my shares in GoPro are meaningless to me now. I need to sell them because I don't want anything. to do with anything that ever kills another human being, I'd say, okay, I respect that. But if someone like you were to also say, you know, hey, I believe that in our national sovereignty and I believe that weapons are, he who carries the biggest stick, it actually, like, matters. I can respect that too. I think there's, I think there's room for, there's room for differing
Starting point is 01:12:13 opinions here. Yeah, there's that, there's that guy. I think there's a, I'm actually 100% certain there's a movie about him. I don't remember his name right now, but I believe he was a pacifist for the Americans, and he, like, saved a ton of soldiers. They were, they were, like, wounded or pinned down or whatever, and he ran the back. Hacksaw Ridge. Yeah, yeah. So, and, like, that's, that is freaking sick. And I know Haxar Ridge is, like, respected and seen very positively.
Starting point is 01:12:43 Desmond Doss, there we go. Yeah, that's for sure the name. That guy is seen very positively respected, even by people who believe the whole, we need to have the bigger stick thing. because like yeah anyways Floop plane chat I love you guys sometimes
Starting point is 01:12:57 blue says your opa where did that German word come from it means Grams by the way you're so close yet so far yes my stepdad's father
Starting point is 01:13:11 who is Mennonite all right if you must know sorry yeah Okay, um, anywho. Uh, yeah, so Markiplier, um, hopefully, you know, you're still a chill dude who just kind of got caught up in something by accident. Um, I'm purely based on vibes and a massive
Starting point is 01:13:39 lack of information. I think so. And you know what? If you're going to make assumptions, how about that one instead of the other one? Yeah. As someone who's been on the other side, of it a lot. I can definitely respect, hey, I'm not that informed on this. How about I assume the best? I just like... Doesn't seem that hard, a little bit of good faith assuming the best of people. You know, you mentioned you've exchanged like 12 text messages with him. Yeah. I have exchanged a grand total of zero. I remember there was one time, I was going to Pax Prime. It was super early in the morning, and I saw him in a Starbucks and he was sitting there talking to someone. He had a guitar, an acoustic guitar on his back with like the strap on his stuff. Well, nobody bad ever played.
Starting point is 01:14:22 played an acoustic guitar. Impossible. And I saw him from across the room and just kind of like nodded at him and he nodded back. And I was like, I feel like the nicest thing I can do right now is just not say hi. And that is my entire, is the entirety of my interaction with him. I think I've maybe watched less than five of his videos ever. Charged nuclei says, but he seems like pretty solid.
Starting point is 01:14:47 You can do that, but you'd be wrong most of the time. That is such a sad worldview. That is a sad worldview. How about we not assume the worst of people all the time? It also depends. Like you can also sometimes have differing partial bits of information. And you have some past information. Like we saw how, um, we've seen how Markiplier has been around for so long. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:15:12 And I don't really know. What else has been a problem? I don't know. Nothing that comes to memory for me. I don't exactly pay a ton of attention to that space. I don't know, man. I, that's another area that I have a lot of thoughts on, but I'm not talking about today. Sure, but yeah, I don't know.
Starting point is 01:15:29 I feel like being around long enough, people are going to be looking for something. And this feels like the way this is blowing up feels to me like people just kind of, well, no one can be that successful for that long and make a movie and, you know, be an online influencer and a gamer and be just generally a good looking chat and having only fans and just be that good. and not have something wrong with them and they're just like waiting for it. You don't know what his only fans? No. Yeah. Wow.
Starting point is 01:15:58 I don't know if he still has it, but he had one at one point. Fascinating. Like imagine being, you know, talented enough and good looking enough and transparent enough, even his clothes are transparent. Yeah, I,
Starting point is 01:16:11 the dong picks that bought GoPro sounds like an amazing documentary title. Yeah, still a thing apparently. Wow. Yeah. All pros. That's kind of based. Yeah, that's cool.
Starting point is 01:16:24 All proceeds will be donated to the Cincinnati Children's Hospital, my hometown. That's cool, actually. I'm not going to follow through with that. Anyways, what was the other thing I was going to say? I had something to say. Shoot. Oh, yeah. This is also a bad argument that could be extrapolated in bad ways.
Starting point is 01:16:47 So I will not die on this hill. I'll run down the hill right after I run to the top. But if we're going to go out for people for insider trading, maybe the government and then does know and then I don't know maybe people like
Starting point is 01:17:01 market supplier after that but maybe let's start there yeah well how about we just how about we go with how about we go in order of priority so I I meant even literally just within the localized idea
Starting point is 01:17:13 of insider trading though like my god man there's like the what is it Nancy Pelosi index insider trading I hardly know her I'm gonna go to jail. It's like, I don't even know. Just, there's ridiculous stock market manipulation going on there.
Starting point is 01:17:38 Dude, the whole, oh my God. We've talked about this on the show, haven't we? You can basically pre-order Trump's tweets for like 100 grand a month. Yeah. And then just abuse the stock market based on it. I think you mean truths. Yeah, whatever. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:17:54 So, so stupid, man. Hey, that's not illegal for U.S. senators. Yeah, so, like, maybe let's look at that first. And I understand this is, I understand this is the argument where, like, you set up a pet sanctuary and you're a nice person. They're like, well, why didn't you focus on cancer? And it's like, okay, we can do more than one thing at once. I get it. I understand why this, there's a reasons why I said I'd run down the hill right afterwards.
Starting point is 01:18:15 What aboutism is, like, a key, like, personality disorder level deflection? Accomplish nothing. Yeah. However, however. But. However, you won't hear me quote the Bible very often, but there's, is it a proverb or something? It's a something. But basically it's like, hey, don't worry about the splinter in Buddy's eye until you've dealt
Starting point is 01:18:40 with the two by four in your own. That's in the... Essentially. Okay. Yeah. And I think that there's a lot of people who could stand to kind of, it's obviously more about hypocrisy, but I also think that there's something to be learned about just prioritization. Can we deal with, can we deal with the bigger problems?
Starting point is 01:19:01 This feels like the, the, the maybe completely non-existent splinter compared to the freaking two-by-four. Yeah. The Equinox Phoenix says, very paraphrased, but yeah, Bible. I thought you were like coding literally and I was like, what? Nah, no, brother. It sounds fairly Bible. He was a carpenter. That's the, that's the Valley Girl edition of the Bible.
Starting point is 01:19:29 King Valley Girl. I don't think they had two, two by four inches. I don't think they had inches yet. There were probably some cubits involved. All right. Okay. Moving on. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:19:46 Oh, right. Oh, dude, it's a huge... We did talk about Markiplier for a while. It's a huge... week for CW announcements. We are launching the Besaud collection, inspired by, well, okay, do I really have to say it? Do you want to read it? Your PC has run into a problem. I was going to fix it, but I got lazy and just shut down. Hopefully, it turns back on. 69% complete. It has anti-phrase stitching, a smooth tracking surface, and an anti-slip rubber backing to keep it in place. and we have the blue screen of dehydration
Starting point is 01:20:27 insulated water bottle available in all three sizes. Our 20 ounce, our 40 ounce, and Armando. Do you want to open up the 64 ounce so they can see it? Nope, that's not it. I'm pointing at it. Armando, 64 ounce made with double ball insulated stainless steel to keep your drinks cold for up to 16 hours or hot for up to eight hours.
Starting point is 01:20:46 Look at that. Your body is dehydrated and needs to restart. Please consume fluids in order to continue. I use one of these every day. Yeah, basically it doubles as a reminder to drink some freaking water before you hit your own system error. Both are available at lmg.gg slash blue screen. That's why I use one of these 64 ounces is because I can definitely remember to fill it up once. Nice.
Starting point is 01:21:11 I get it. Hold on. Let's make sure those Dell logos are exposed. Sponsorship disclosure. Just like market pliers only fans. That's right. Also, we are restocking our floatplane dip-dye hoodie. been wanting one, this is your chance to get it. And if you're not a floatplane member yet, you can join now to get access to exclusive content and other perks like free shipping at our highest tier. Do we have free shipping at the highest tier? Is that ongoing? Apparently. Oh,
Starting point is 01:21:37 that's cool. All right, free shipping on LTT store.com for the highest tier on floatplane. We're basically prime now. Yeah. Not the drink. And we're not Amazon. There's no pee in bottles involved. Is that what prime is? with some thickening agents Oh Thicker tea I don't think I've gotten both of them that good in a while We should add MSG to it
Starting point is 01:22:14 Oh Gross Maybe delicious There's only one thing to know Dan's MSG tips You've got to try these things also also this is a this is a big deal nuclear is blowing up with our current our current sales trajectory the new colorway of screwdriver that we oh oh man my tech
Starting point is 01:22:46 sacks not in my bag because okay well whatever you got it my tech sacks not in my bag because I was using it to change out lights switches um with our current rate of sales it will be gone quickly. And while the excitement's hot, we actually did a deep dive on the whole process in our newsletter. So watch for upcoming behind the scenes looks at how we develop our products and all the weird problems we run into along the way by joining at LMG.G slash newsletter. Also, as promised, more is being added to the power outlet. We've dug deep into the corners of the warehouse to pull some of the last few units of some of our biggest, and not so biggest, releases so make sure that you are checking it out at uh oh one sec umgd lmg slash power outlet so last chances
Starting point is 01:23:30 once it's gone it's gone and uh oh man there's uh yeah there's some there's definitely some stuff from the archives in here oh this feels on topic this week hey we have yeah just regular double x we have one so you can still get the if buying isn't owning if you're a regular length double XL and you only want one of them. Cool. Cool beans. What? What?
Starting point is 01:23:57 The packable jacket is $40. Yeah, so the prices will just go down until they sell and if you miss it, you miss it. That simple. Where am I supposed to be? Oh, right, yeah. So with all these exciting things
Starting point is 01:24:12 that you can get on LTT store.com, now's a better time than ever to send a checkout message. All you got to do is add something to your car. Luke's on it. I love that Reese. He's got that look. He really does. He looks exactly the same.
Starting point is 01:24:27 It looks like we just photoshop the same head on the different outfits. It's insane to the point where I thought we did it at one point. No, we didn't. It's wild. No, he's just that consistent. Multiple shoots. He's that consistent. Wild.
Starting point is 01:24:38 Anyway, yeah, if we're live, you can send a checkout message when you check out. You can link it to your float plane account, which does something. I forget what that does. It works now. It shows your name that way. The theoretically, it works now. Oh, shows you like your flip plane account? Oh, that's cool.
Starting point is 01:24:51 Okay, and then you leave a message for producer Dan who will pop it up on the screen if it's just like a hi-mom shout-out or whatever, or who might reply to him himself or who might curate it for me and Luke to respond. Good Lord, there's a lot today. Yeah, it's been very popular. Oh, what are people buying? Water bottles. That makes sense.
Starting point is 01:25:10 For some reason. The blue screen water bottles is cool. We sold a bunch. Cool. Yeah, I want one too. Uh, yeah, I mean, send a message like, dingus, dingus. Dingus, dingus, dingus. Thank you.
Starting point is 01:25:24 Thank you. That was worth me reading. Someone sent that? Yeah. Oh, okay. Yeah, well, you can make Dan read anything. I will read. You can't make him actually do anything.
Starting point is 01:25:33 Every single one. But he will read every message. Maybe that's because of Bringus Studios being on Flowplane now. Bringus is on Flooplane? Yes. Oh, really? I don't think it's been like super publicly announced, but if I go down, I can see Bringus. What?
Starting point is 01:25:51 Yeah. Oh, that's super cool. Hell yeah. Early access adless cut, the Xbox Toaster. What? Yeah. Okay, that's pretty cool. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:26:05 Super happy. We were talking about like, because we were talking about trying to find ways to make it easier to continually get content to people that are on Flowplane without necessarily. Because this is the general. battle every time is when I when I try to get someone on a floatplane they they they go like okay but like what do I do how do I offer the audience a thing when we first started doing this even all the way back to Rip Vessel it was just early access right but the early access model is still interesting but is kind of hard to
Starting point is 01:26:42 keep up with it's yeah sometimes it's harder to keep up with it's the same content hamster wheel but faster yeah which is like not faster, but like, you have to spin it a little faster for a while, and then you have to stay on it. And it also creates interesting expectations where, like, what if something has to be done super rapidly and you need to get it out super quickly? Well, now you're screwing over your paid audience because now it's no longer early access for them. And you can build an understanding, but there's still frustration there, et cetera, et cetera. So we went back and forth on some ideas for a while. Actually, had a really wonderful call for a really long time and then apologize
Starting point is 01:27:19 for how long I kept them on Discord for. But yeah, he's on the platform. It's very cool. Very cool. Here's a really good question. Trebulosity over on Floatplane on the restock announcement for this hoodie says, why not restock everything? Does warehouse space cost that much?
Starting point is 01:27:37 It's actually, yes, for one, yes. Especially now that we have multiple distribution centers. But also, it's really more about, like, dude, garment production. is so much more complicated. If someone had told me how complicated it was, I probably would have been like, nah, forget it. But it's usually more to do with minimums,
Starting point is 01:28:02 because you can't just, you can't just, like, order 10 hoodies. Like, I think a lot of people think, oh, yeah, merch, I can just make 10 or 20 for, like, a team event or whatever. But our garments are not, they're not off the shelf, and then just with, like, a logo printed on them.
Starting point is 01:28:19 Like, this uses custom pulls that have little float planes on the bottoms of them. These are dye matched as close as we can get them. So, like, these are custom. We're getting embroidery done. Our hoodie itself is custom. It has our cell phone pocket. The dip die process. They're not going to just, like, fire up the dip die tank for you to order 10 units.
Starting point is 01:28:46 It doesn't work like that. Like, it's a whole thing. so if your sales volumes are not high enough to justify ordering hundreds, in some cases thousands of them, then you can't restock them. And so that's how you end up with like one double XL in that size
Starting point is 01:29:01 because as much as I would love for us to just have every item available for order for everybody. There's also the factor of just like having choice paralysis by having too much stuff on your website can make it hard for people to shop. So yeah, it's a lot more complicated than just like, oh, Linus is a cheap cut and doesn't want to order it.
Starting point is 01:29:19 right like yeah sometimes but surprisingly rarely all right let's get into some comms then oh yeah did we not do one yet no oh all right it's tangent city today hello to the dulcet tones of dLL a few weeks back you mentioned that tech is worrying what current trends in tech worry the three of you the most p s the podcast is so welcome on my drive to work just like cost or everything a lot lot of people that really enjoy this hobby have just genuinely straight up been priced out. Just fully. Yeah, I had, I don't know if I've actually talked about this on WAN show, but at one of our all hands, I basically told the team, I was like, hey, we are headed into an environment where kind of like what Robert, I forget his last name from Intel said, where he was like, yeah,
Starting point is 01:30:13 it's like a tale of two markets. We're going to have to start just understanding that not every piece of content can be for everybody. There are going to be exceptions like the Steam Machine, which is just fascinating because there's a software story to tell there. There's a compatibility and the future of gaming story to tell there. There's also a kind of expensive piece of hardware story to tell. There's also an entry-level performance story to tell, right? Like there's so many stories that it kind of,
Starting point is 01:30:42 and that's reflected in the results. I think like 4 million people watched our review of the Steam Machine. But we're going to have to recognize that for a, lot of the other content pieces that we're doing that we are targeting a segment of the audience and not everything is going to be for everybody. And like I really love that quote from Arrowhead Studios, which I'm really hoping it's still on their website. Let me check. Yeah, it is. Ha ha. This is like one of my favorite things. A game made for everyone is a game made for no one. Strongly believe it. And, you know, content made for everyone is content made for no one,
Starting point is 01:31:20 in my opinion. Um, but we've also talked about how, you know, 10% of earners are buying 50% of things. Um, and those things include stuff that might be more essential to your life than RAM. Um, so a video made for people who are currently enthusiastic, buying computer hardware is a video made for really not a lot of people. Yeah. Which is like a problem. And it is, but it also is not an existential threat, which is what I was trying to get across to the team, where I'm like, look, it used to be that if you told me, hey, Linus,
Starting point is 01:32:07 we're going to do this video concept. It's going to get less than a million views. I just said, well, you know, is that sustainable, right? like can we can we afford to do that if less a million engaged views right be a topic later on we'll get into that um and and if they were like you know i might have said is this sustainable right like can we afford all the production cost involved in this and are we still going to be coming out ahead and the answer might have been might have been no but since then i'd like to say you know good job everybody, pulling together as a team, recognizing that we weren't going to be able to rely on
Starting point is 01:32:47 volume of views forever, I think my response to that has changed in a big way lately. The answer has been more, hey, you know, is this something that has a high degree of excitement within one of our sort of target audience bands? And if it might only get half a million views or it might only get 700,000 views or whatever it is that we think it's going to be engaged views, we'll get to that later, then maybe that's justifiable, as long as we can continue to fire on all cylinders for things like our products, for finding ways to get people to engage through floatplain with us, you know, creating exclusive content, like all of these other things that we do to keep a more niche enthusiast audience.
Starting point is 01:33:42 engaged and one of the things that I said during that time is like we're going to stop being afraid to make videos about the latest features. We're going to make a video about DLSS-5, even though that's something that is only supported officially on recent gen GPUs. We're going to make a video just building the fastest PC. We're going to go back to doing that kind of stuff. We're also going to make more broadly applicable stuff like how to stop a smart TV from spying on you. That'll be a piece of evergreen content. We're also going to do value stuff. Can you put the newest CPU in the oldest motherboard? We're going to do stuff that we're just going to do because I thought it was cool.
Starting point is 01:34:18 This video is like one of my favorites that I've done in forever. And I don't even care that it got 600,000 views because it was an absolute blast. I got full custom water cooling. Good Lord. I got full custom water cooling for less than the price of a Noctua or like a top end Corsair AIO. And I'm talking like, full full for real Z's water cooling. cooling. Like GPU, RGB all the things,
Starting point is 01:34:48 hardline tubing, water cooling. Freaking awesome. That is nuts. That is nuts. Yeah. And you know what? Not that many people are water cooling these days, but fuck it. I just don't, I don't think I can care about that anymore. I think that... Do stuff that seems fun. I think, I may
Starting point is 01:35:03 even do a formal announcement of this, like on the LTT channel, but I think it's going to change. I think it's going to change a lot over the next year. And I think it's going to be a lot less of like, you know, what the computer enthusiast, sort of this vague, nebulous concept of what the audience is, is asking for, and it's going to be a lot more of whatever the hell I feel like doing today.
Starting point is 01:35:34 And as part of that, I think you're going to see me take a significant step back from some of our other channels as well. So I got to kind of, I got to kind of fester on it a little bit. bit more, but I think it's, I think it's time. We're in a time of change. Big change, dude. Massive, massive change. Yeah, should we talk about the views topic?
Starting point is 01:35:56 Let's talk about the views topic. Or are we doing another... Can we do a second comment? Yeah, sorry. I just realized that it was only one. All good. LLD, after all these years working together, what's one tech or life opinion? The other has changed your mind about and one where you still think they're completely wrong.
Starting point is 01:36:11 Something loose completely wrong. about. Oh wait, we have to come up with both? Yeah. I don't know. Pick one if you want. That's such a cop out because we'll both just pick a thing the other one convinced us of. Yeah. I'm trying to think of something Luke's, because I can think of something I don't necessarily agree with Luke completely about. Something Luke's completely wrong about.
Starting point is 01:36:34 Something I respect about Luke, I'm going to go full politician here and just not answer the question. Something I respect about my opponent is that he is, uh, he's a lot of, man. And so even when I don't agree, I can at least follow the breadcrumbs to how he got there. I can give something you convinced me on. I don't even know if you remember this. That'll be interesting. I think about this every once in a while. And I wonder, I come back to this to ask myself if I've like lost my way. I don't know if I've, I'm sure I've talked to you about this before, but I'll often consider what would different ages of me think about where I am now.
Starting point is 01:37:16 Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I have that thought, like, often. Yeah. And, like, actually intentionally go through that process every once in a while to just kind of like... What would 10-year-old me think? Yeah. Would he think I'm cool? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:37:28 And, like, smart. What are the actions I've done over the last few months? Do these things seem like previous versions of me would consider of them, like, honorable or good or, or whatever? Fun, who knows? But, like, what would previous... And I respect what I think... the previous versions of me would think. And sometimes it's not positive,
Starting point is 01:37:50 but sometimes I dismiss that. Because I'm like, yeah, that version of me would not like this, but I have my reasons. Maybe. He was a naive little shit. Yeah, maybe. Doesn't necessarily understand the, he hadn't made it to the real world yet.
Starting point is 01:38:02 The things I'm dealing with right now or the things that people in my life are dealing with right now and the sacrifices I might need to make in order to deal with those, etc. So like, I don't always go like, oh no, but it's, it is an exercise that I go through. Okay. One of the things that I run into fairly often is when we first started working together.
Starting point is 01:38:20 I don't know if you remember this. I refused to do ads. Oh, yeah. That's right. You wouldn't record sponsor segments. Hardline refused. And I was just like, okay. And I was just dumb.
Starting point is 01:38:38 I had a different view of like what I wanted us to do. I would have been happy with us staying as like three people and scrapping it out. but I also didn't have to deal with the money. Mm-hmm. And you didn't know how close we were to running out of it. No. I didn't want you to know that then. And then once I started learning more about that, I started doing it.
Starting point is 01:39:00 That was like literally, you started being like more transparent with me about some of the numbers. I don't know if you didn't even know that that's what caused it. No, I didn't. But I stopped fighting hosting ads because I was like, oh, he like has to do this. That's how it works. Or none of us have jobs. and then I'm just being like, well, I won't do them. And I was like, well, that's lame and that's like dishonorable in a way.
Starting point is 01:39:20 How luxurious to be so principled. But that's exactly my point of like, oh, yeah. So I'm okay with him tanking everything, but I won't do any of it, but I will take my paycheck. And then I was like, okay, I'll drop this. That's hilarious. I actually did not remember that. I think about that every once in a while. I didn't remember that you weren't willing to do sponsor reads.
Starting point is 01:39:39 Only now that you bring it up. I only vaguely remember it even. Which I technically think. technically is an artifact of why you do the Wanshow ones. Weird fun fact. I never really thought about it. Because I've jumped in and done them before. Some weeks you weren't on Wanshow and I would do all the reeds.
Starting point is 01:39:57 Yeah, but no, even when I'm feeling like crap, I always do the reads. You always jump in and do the reads. I've even tried to offer to do them for you and you just say, no, no, no. But I think it's your brain locked in on when we started Wancho. I would never do the reads. That's crazy. So there's your, yeah. I often only have, like, remember that when I'm, like, in a reflective mode,
Starting point is 01:40:25 which is not super commonly, like, while I'm hanging out with people. So this isn't a topic of conversation that comes up much. But, yeah, I ran into, I have that thought of, like. Yeah, PK7 asks, now that when is 50% owned by you, do you have to do half of the ads now? I mean, sure. I don't care. I've offered to do them in the past. Like, I have no issue now.
Starting point is 01:40:45 That's so funny. Okay, all right. Well, we split them into two now, so you could do three, four. To me, now it doesn't matter. I don't mind doing it. I don't mind doing it. I think I would feel uncomfortable. It's a thing that needs to be done.
Starting point is 01:40:58 Doing ads? No, no, no, having Linus not. Because, I mean, it has been the same thing for so many years now. I had the same mindset as you. I was like, I hate ads. I'm never going to do ads. They made one in front of them. You know, punk music and stuff like that.
Starting point is 01:41:16 It's, you know, a lot of those guys started doing stuff to make ends meet, right? I mean, it's one of those things where it's like, it, nothing is, nothing's black and white, right? Like, and I still believe pretty strongly in not doing certain types of ads. Yeah. I've had conversations with this about, you know, I'm not going to go self-promotion route, but there's a thing that I do, and we've had conversations about, like, what ads we would be okay with. Oh, button pal. I don't care.
Starting point is 01:41:43 Yeah. Speaking of which, um, Hold on, I'm going to find it just because I watched his first video and it was so good and I just don't really care about the policy right now. I can't find it. What are you talking about? James has a channel. Oh.
Starting point is 01:42:02 I can't find it. He only has one video and it only has like 2,000 views. So it's like hard to find right now. Dang it. Sorry. Keep talking. I'll just throw it. But yeah, we've talked about like what kind of sponsors we would accept or not accept.
Starting point is 01:42:16 there's certain lines that I jumped on where I'm like I'm not okay with X, Y, or Z thing. And, you know, it is what it is. He has his own lines. Button Pal is literally unsearchable on YouTube. Really? I've never had an issue finding it. The first thing that comes up. And did he rebranded? I cannot find this damn channel. Here it is. Work account, by the way.
Starting point is 01:42:48 Games tries. Yeah, this video is like awesome. surprise my wife with a new mudroom and it cost me everything. Fun fact, I helped him paint those cabinets. I didn't do much, but I helped him a little. That second one, the six hours, I wonder how that will do over time. I have no idea. I think he's just doing stuff.
Starting point is 01:43:09 That's, I... He's trying. Yeah, yeah, fair enough. It's right in the name. That's what I had always wanted to do. That's what I really like about the side channels. It's just like not... I don't want to make junk.
Starting point is 01:43:23 But I don't technically care about the views at the end that much. Obviously, there's a little bit of... No, I mean, it never hurts the ego. Yeah, yeah, exactly. I mean, let's be real. I mean, people don't make their way into our line of work without a little bit of the, you know... Like I care a bit, but I don't have to survive off of it. You know, we can release something.
Starting point is 01:43:46 And if it doesn't do that well, it's like, oh, well, and you go to work the next day. Like, it's not, it's nice to not have that part of it. And you can just experiment and try things. If something doesn't work, it doesn't hurt you that bad. And you just keep moving forward. I like that part a lot. I kind of wish we released our videos after the YouTube change. But it is what it is.
Starting point is 01:44:05 Oh, I guess let's talk about that. Or wait, are we supposed to do anything else right now? I think we finished the... Yeah, we should probably... Speaking of sponsors, we should probably get a couple of those reads done. And then we'll talk about the YouTube view changes. Okay.
Starting point is 01:44:19 Because I've got some concrete numbers now. Like, we knew that it was going to change. But now I can go through the dashboard and really show you guys, like, what it looks like. I've got some, too. The show is brought to you by Odu. If your business is paying a bunch of companies to use different apps on different platforms, you start to feel tangled up in a web of your own making. Frodo did not make that web, minor point, but...
Starting point is 01:44:44 Yeah, pretty... Anyway, it sounds to me like you need a friend. A friend like Odu. Odo is business management software with just about any app. you could need built right into the platform at an affordable price. For finance and sales, you can get apps for accounting, invoicing, CRM to help you organize projects. It also gives you the ability to run an online shop or offer subscriptions and rentals. Odu can even help you with marketing, with apps for socials, emails, text, or organizing events,
Starting point is 01:45:11 and most of this can be set up to be automated, which is pretty cool. They also have apps for all your HR team's needs, like the ability to centralize employee info, they have onboarding tools and time off tracking. You can create custom interfaces too, so you. You see the information you need and nothing more. And if you only need one app, this is one of the coolest things about Odu. It's free. Use our link for a free 15-day trial.
Starting point is 01:45:32 Oh, wow, that water bottle is right there. With no credit card required or a book a demo with their expert team to learn how Odu can help your business. The show is also brought you by Vessi. It's September, which means the rain's back. And coffee companies are pouring cinnamon nutmeg sauce into their drinks and calling them pumpkin. And you're also just realizing now that your summer shoes don't keep it. water out. So hey, maybe keep your socks dry in style with our sponsor Vessi and their weekend Chelsea lineup of shoes. Whether you're looking to break something in before pumpkin patch season,
Starting point is 01:46:03 or you just want something to wear on a hike, Vessi says their shoes are 100% waterproof thanks to their Diametex weave, which also happens to make them breathable and lightweight. And guess what? They're easy to clean after those yuckier, muckier days. They come in both men and women's sizes, as well as in a variety of colors so you can match them with your favorite fall outfits. And if you're not happy with your purchase. Vessi has a 30-day hassle-free returns, as well as a whole-year warranty on everything in their store. Vessi's worked with us for a long time, and many of our team members have even worn their Vessi's rain and shine, and you can too. Save 15%
Starting point is 01:46:37 on your first pair using our link down below. And I'm going to wait till after we're out of the Vessi spot, but I actually, this is like my new Wombo combo. Oh! Vessi, okay, you couldn't see the socks, damn it, but I did. Vessie shoes and LTT socks. You get that wool content in there. You get the breathability of the vesees. It's like the perfect.
Starting point is 01:47:03 You get the cushion with the sockies. I am like happier than five little piggies in wool with how my feet situation is going every day. Scrappy DPS, do you sell them in a bundle deal? Unfortunately not. Aircon in float plane chat says, What would it take for Linus to declare something waterproof? Uh, uh,
Starting point is 01:47:26 nothing. There's nothing. I don't think. Okay. Okay. Context does matter. So for me, one of the big things with Vessi is just that it's a wear item that I know will develop gaps.
Starting point is 01:47:43 So even though, to their credit, diamond tax is actually really cool. Um, the way that I wear my shoes every single day and do not rotate through them, I didn't know that wasn't normal. Um, I just put on. on the exact same pair of shoes every day. So I like churned through shoes. I think you and I both
Starting point is 01:48:01 learned that much later in life. Yeah. I still do that as well. Yeah, like people have like different shoes and I was like, that's crazy. What? Like at the same time. That's wild. Yeah. Like, yeah, madness. Honestly, the first time I heard that, I thought it was like a fashion thing and I thought it was because you'd own multiple pairs of the same type of shoe, but in different colors and you'd like mix them to look cool. That is so stupid. That was much young. I love it. Yeah, anyway. Wow. This was like Converse era.
Starting point is 01:48:34 People had a bunch of different colors or shoes and would wear more colorful clothing. So yeah, like in the context of like a shoe that has glues that join dissimilar materials, I don't think you'd ever get me to say it's waterproof. You know what? I'd say gumboots are waterproof though. Because they're a molded single rubber piece. I wouldn't say that like a glued one is. I've seen ones that have multiple pieces and they have seams.
Starting point is 01:48:58 I wouldn't say that that's waterproof. But I would say that a molded single piece gum boot is waterproof. Yeah, I'd say that. Do you factor in time? Yeah. Yeah. But a reasonable lifespan of a human is maybe the time? I don't even know if it's like the entire lifetime of a human.
Starting point is 01:49:17 I would say, I would say. 20 years? I don't, it's more, it's not that concrete. Like I would say, I would say this water bottle is waterproof. Because like one of the lines for me why I have not said waterproof is because eventually. Yeah, I mean, the Grand Canyon, you know, a rock is not waterproof. You will lose.
Starting point is 01:49:37 Yeah. Water makes fools of us all. Water wins. Every time. I was, uh, I was over on, uh, Barnston Island recently. And, um, we were, we were going down a road that had not been serviced in some time. I bet you water was winning. My kids were like WTF.
Starting point is 01:49:56 I was like, sometimes water, it do be freezing. It just takes a while. Cephalous. Wow. In full plane chat, it said water, uh,
Starting point is 01:50:12 finds a way. Yeah, it's like life, you know? And it does eventually. Um, okay, I think we're supposed to be doing some topics. It's been,
Starting point is 01:50:19 wow, it's been a while. Oh, wait. We're going to talk YouTube views. Yeah. YouTube redefines, view. Beginning August 24th, YouTube now counts
Starting point is 01:50:29 a view the moment a video starts to play across all formats shorts, VOD, and live streams. The change does not impact partner program earnings or eligibility. I thought it did. Earning will remain based on engaged
Starting point is 01:50:45 short views and engaged watch hours while program, while partner program eligibility is still based on qualified shorts views or qualified watch hours. Last week, YouTube announced it will be doubling the thresholds for, yeah, what? Last week, YouTube announced it will be doubling the thresholds for, so, okay, two things happening at basically the same time.
Starting point is 01:51:07 Yes. I guess one doesn't impact the other, but sure. I think these were launched at the same time for a reason. But anyways, last week, YouTube announced it will be doubling the thresholds for the new partner program applicants starting in 2027. All right. So let's talk a little bit about this. We've already talked about sort of the pros and cons of changing the way that a view
Starting point is 01:51:27 is counted. If you didn't tune into that WAN show, here's the short summary. Basically, it puts YouTube Vod, which is long form, on an even playing field with things, other platforms like Instagram, and with shorts on YouTube itself in terms of how the view counts are measured. This doesn't matter at all because it doesn't affect your payout or it doesn't affect your eligibility for the partner program, except that it affects your fragile ego, so that's one part of it, and also it affects your ability to validate your clout with outside sponsors and partners. And against outside platforms. Well, that's exactly it.
Starting point is 01:52:08 So you could be a YouTuber who's getting 100,000 views on your video, and you could be going up against, you know, for sponsor dollars, an Instagrammer who gets a quarter million views on their video or what are they real or whatever it is, and a sponsor partner could look at that and go, oh, I should sponsor the Instagram. thing, when actually YouTube was just counting views in a more, in my opinion, correct way. So YouTube kind of sold out, but they did it in a way that wasn't really to their benefit. It was more just to the benefit of the creators on their platform. I don't think they get anything from this.
Starting point is 01:52:43 I think their platform looks more active compared to how it did before. I think that's fair. I think when you're looking at the numbers for things like views on X, views on Instagram, views on Facebook, views on TikTok, views on upcoming Billy Billy, views on everything else. No one else is calculating it the way that YouTube does. So YouTube looks less active,
Starting point is 01:53:06 looks less interesting. It looks like people perform more poorly on YouTube. It looks like it is a more difficult path to relevance. Despite the fact that compared to a lot of those platforms, it is a actually much easier path to relevance because discoverability on YouTube is better than like, practically anywhere. So let's jump in and have a look at how this change, where they measure the view
Starting point is 01:53:31 the second it starts playing rather than several seconds in, is impacting the number. So first thing I'm going to do... Crazy. That's... Oh. Is have my laptop not be outputting to that. One second. Sorry, I'm just...
Starting point is 01:53:47 Our laptop partner is definitely still Dell, but I just happen to have my dashboard signed in here. We try to not log into those. types of things on the WAN Show laptops for security reasons. Yeah. Okay. All right, here we go. So we'll jump into content here.
Starting point is 01:54:02 Whoops, I'm not for it. What? You've changed you the input, so I just need to modify the input. Unless it's not outputting properly. So it works, but my button doesn't work. Yeah, duplicate is on, so I should be outputting. You are not, is it 1080? Oh, I'll change it.
Starting point is 01:54:25 You're 1920 by 1200. Do you guys want to, should I do another short topic while you guys mess with that, or is it going to be done in a moment? It'll probably be done at a moment. Just got to set it to 1080. Yeah, I know how to do that. It's harder than you think these days. I know, right. I hate that.
Starting point is 01:54:45 Okay, we good? Checking. No, I shall show you has 1,200. What? See what I mean? Sucks. Because, just because it says that doesn't mean it is. is.
Starting point is 01:55:06 It like downscales the picture but doesn't adjust the output. So flipping. One of the reasons I'm really happy with these Dells is they do it perfectly. I've used this one for this before, though. Yeah. What if I extend? Extend normally does very well. Okay.
Starting point is 01:55:30 You know what, Luke, maybe go for it. Do another small topic? Okay. I'm excited for this one. There is currently a cow playing Eve Online on Twitch. For reasons that are not entirely clear, YvonLine's recently renamed publisher, Fenris Creations, set up a small enclosure with cameras and buttons,
Starting point is 01:55:54 enabling a cow to play the long-running, massively multiplayer economic simulator, sure, kind of, in space, also known as Yvon Online. And there is no real further notes than that. than the fact that there is a Twitch link to the Vod that I can't go to because my screen chairs also messed up, it seems. There we go. And you can see the cow who... So does it, like, does it win? There seems to, well, it's Eve. So you only win if you quit. So I'm assuming no. But I was very unsurprised that it was sitting and it's station spinning around because that's
Starting point is 01:56:33 what basically all Eve players do. So it was playing the game very effectively at the start. We watch movies. They should just have a movie on that TV and then they would be playing Eve. Basically the same thing. It's spamming some form of input now. Eventually it goes out into space. I think it's flying a roerical. I don't know what it's doing in a Roer. How did it afford that? I don't know how it afforded a Rourke. My assumption is they wanted it to be bait. for people to come blow it up. But yeah, you can see he's warping somewhere. I don't know how he's doing the inputs.
Starting point is 01:57:11 Like you can see these little white things around. And I think those are its input buttons to some degree. There is fairly clearly some amount of like human stuff going on because they type like real things in sometimes. So I really, this is, the whole thing is very, very strange. Wow, is this how ads work on Twitch now? I have to say as much as all ads suck, that is way better. It's tolerable.
Starting point is 01:57:45 I'm into that. It's kind of like suburbish transfers. That was pretty smart. Whoever came up with that? I like that. That's pretty good. Wow, Luke's character arc going from anti-ad to now, what a smart ad. What a good idea for giving people ads.
Starting point is 01:57:59 What a great ad. Yeah, yeah. It's just something that I always thought was super annoying about ads and live streams that it would interrupt the live stream. I thought that was ridiculous. Oh, yeah. If you want to put it on the side, that's better. Dan, is it working?
Starting point is 01:58:11 There's still some that replace the stream. Ah, okay. Well, those still suck, I guess. Any luck? We are still struggling with the screen share. I can do another topic. Okay. Sorry.
Starting point is 01:58:28 By now I could have logged in. New York City bans AI for students before high school. What? New York City mayor, Zara and Mondani, they're working on stuff, has announced a one-year moratorium for the 26 to 27 school year, banning students in kindergarten through eighth grade from using AI in classrooms. Okay. The policy also bans companion chatbots across all grades. New York City schools will also introduce additional limits on digital devices and a small pilot program for AI educational tools.
Starting point is 01:59:09 This is just like AMD nonsense. Yeah, it is. It's the active signal mode is different. That all seems cool and good. I think they will not be able to completely solve people from using this stuff outside of school to do things like homework or whatever else. But, I mean, removing those devices from the classroom makes sense. if a kid is there to be edgimicated
Starting point is 01:59:39 if they are constantly getting their answers from some AI just outputting stuff that doesn't feel like they're getting edgimicated so yeah sounds good is this the way I mean I was a pretty large supporter of getting rid of devices in schools and this feels like a more specific version
Starting point is 01:59:57 of that path so sure I'm down with it more notes just plowing through some smaller topics as we go. GrapheneOS is not coming to Pixel 11. The GraphenOS team says that Google's new phones are lacking support for arms memory tagging extensions or MTE, a security feature pixel phones had supported since Pixel 8 in 2023. MTE protects against memory safety bugs, which Google revealed back in 2022, accounted for over 60% of high severity security
Starting point is 02:00:34 vulnerabilities. Wow. The GraphinoS team says that their focus is likely to shift entirely to Motorola devices. Interesting. Yeah, what a wild turn of events. For something that four years ago they said accounted for 60% of high security vulnerabilities, that doesn't seem good. I wonder how long I'm going to have my phone for. It might be forever.
Starting point is 02:00:59 I might just be battery replacing for the rest of time. Cool. Yeah. I'm ready. Okay. We are doing that now. Sounds good. I'll be careful. I'm always careful. Be careful. I'm always full of care. All right. YouTube studio, here we go, boys.
Starting point is 02:01:20 So what we're going to do is we're going to just head over into the content tab. We're going to filter by anything with like more than 10,000 views. Because that'll just filter out anything that's like channel members only or like uploading. for like a draft or whatever yeah okay oh you can i guess you're seeing some upcoming videos nice uh all right here we go so let's start with the first one yeah which one was that i believe it was this one my wife needs a new phone now right out of the gate you can see that compared to typical channel viewership right now which is anywhere from 638,000 views on like custom water cooling nonsense to 1.6 million on Jordan's AMD Ultimate
Starting point is 02:02:13 Tech upgrade, which was a banger, by the way. That was a very good video. Make sure you guys watch it. This was a bit of an outlier. Really fun video. The comments are amazing, but just the Riley David thumbnail, I guess, didn't scream LTT to people. So maybe they just didn't even... It's also guitar hero controller.
Starting point is 02:02:31 They're really cool, though. It's cooler than I expected. It's just in, I enjoyed the video. It's just insane. It's like the opposite of zeitgeist. So anyway, anywhere from, I'm going to call this an outlier. I'm going to call this an outlier, this $2 million, Linus and Elijah go printer shopping.
Starting point is 02:02:47 So let's say anywhere from 700,000, 2 million and a half. All right? We good on that? Yep. 3 million. Shalwamp! Yeah. Now something that speaks to me is that you can see the,
Starting point is 02:03:03 Dan, do you want to just, lose us. Yeah, that'd be great. You can see the estimated revenue. Yes. And it's, it's close to Jordans. Yes. I'm assuming the actual views are somewhere close to that range. Let's assume nothing. So I still assumed it did really well. Let's go look at how I actually find a real view. So we see, hey, we updated how views are counted. So recent counts may be higher. Keep this in mind. If I learn more, it takes me to just like a support thing. It doesn't actually like overlay it here. I don't have a quick way. Oh, oh yeah, they've added in here.
Starting point is 02:03:36 Okay, cool. The other way is you can go to advanced mode. Yeah. And then... This is the primary way I've seen. Yeah, this is what they told me I was going to have to do. So it looks like the other thing is either they changed their mind or is new. So you can see your...
Starting point is 02:03:51 Okay, so we've had this problem. Here we go. Dan and I were going through this... Oh, that is not the same at all. This is the problem Dan and I were going through. Yeah, I have my numbers here, too, from the API for the same thing. Fascinate Is it just those two combined?
Starting point is 02:04:09 Trays interesting Whereas when I go here It's like 1.3 I really do feel like YouTube has rolled this out In an uncharacteristically half hazard fashion 1.3 Engageys Can you go back to the advance view? Yeah, I sure can
Starting point is 02:04:22 Is it just adding them together? Hold on, let me add it. No, no, it's not. It's not. They should be separate. They should be separate lines. I have not seen it displayed this way. I don't really understand what's going on right now. Is the video at 3.6 or 7 million views?
Starting point is 02:04:38 If you look at the channel page. Channel page? Yeah, I'm just going to do it. Go to the actual YouTube video. I'm losing them. Oh, no, it's less than that. It's like 3.2. Yeah, it's not just these added together.
Starting point is 02:04:54 No. I see it at 3.2. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Yeah, so it's not that. So none of these numbers agree with each other at all. So this is the same thing Dan and I ran it to earlier.
Starting point is 02:05:04 Also, this interface. is not showing the same way that it did for me when I was looking at it the other day. The other day when I clicked this and I added engaged views it showed both views and engaged views together on the graph so I wonder if they've made some more changes
Starting point is 02:05:19 anyway the point was just I wanted to give you guys some context for how views track against engaged views and these guidelines that I'm kind of showing you guys are not necessarily applicable to every channel. So, um, for instance, I had another content creator messaging me about
Starting point is 02:05:41 this and saying that theirs were a bit of a different ratio than ours. It's very different. Yeah. Um, so here, let's have a look at, um, I built a fake home theater in the tech house. This is a cool video. So, uh, James and the buys, uh, decided on the, on the home theater layout without me. So I got to find out watching the video, same as you guys. So this was a lower ratio of engaged views versus views. Yeah. So what I might take away from this is that maybe, um, is there anything you to take away from it or is it just retention? Well, this is, it's all sample size of one or two right now. So what I would take away from it is that, okay, retention could be one. People are like, you know, oh, it's LTT. Linus isn't in it. They click away or oh,
Starting point is 02:06:32 they're planning to build a real one. It's not actually just made of cardboard. I don't quite, wait for that. Yeah, maybe they don't feel like the thumbnail represented. People can have any different number of reasons for bouncing from a piece of content. But one of the potential reasons could be that proportionally this video has a higher number of impressions served compared to people who decided to engage with it. It could just be that simple. And our more niche content does tend to be like that, where it'll get some okay impressions, but people are just like, you know what, I'm not that interested in that. And so it'll have fewer reviews. Even if you're someone might hold their mouse over it, which now counts as a view.
Starting point is 02:07:08 Now counts, yeah. Being served it at all does not count. No. If it shows up on your, on your homepage, it doesn't count as a view. But if they accidentally auto play it for even a fraction of a second, then it counts. That counts. Yeah, so it's not exactly the same as impressions. So we built the best PC is looking like the ratio is going to be more favorable. We can see that right out of the gate because the money is there, the engagement's there, even though the quote unquote views are not that much higher. So here, we'll dig into it.
Starting point is 02:07:35 we go okay 1.8 what that doesn't agree with that at all yeah all of mine were different
Starting point is 02:07:42 yeah fascinating okay so 1.8 versus fascinating did you watch Hail Mary
Starting point is 02:07:48 no okay oh is that a thing no it's just a couple words made me think maybe oh okay um
Starting point is 02:07:56 amaze amaze interesting that's closer to the that's closer to the DIY home theater one or the cardboard home theater one
Starting point is 02:08:04 Okay. I show about 70%. So my wife needs a phone was like 67% difference. And the theater room was about 70%. I wonder if yours is the more real number then. It's going to be delayed about a day. And it's going to be debauded. Currently, both of those only have a wronginess figure of about 3%,
Starting point is 02:08:35 which means that the YouTube real view count, which I pull every couple hours, will always be a little bit higher than my delayed, debotted actual count. So, like, I don't have any data for fastest PC you build right now apart from what YouTube is currently displaying. But then tomorrow I'll get that first one
Starting point is 02:08:53 and it takes about three to four days to stabilize. But, yeah, I started collecting this as soon as I heard about this and it looks like about 70%, which is really interesting. So 2.1.2.2.2. 1 million extra views on phone and about 900,000 extra views on home theater room. But then if you normalize them, it's about 70%.
Starting point is 02:09:15 EJC just pointed out, the hover over a video counts towards your history now too and clogs it up as a viewer. That's frustrating. Is that true? That's awful. That is... Sorry, did you just mention the history thing? Yeah.
Starting point is 02:09:33 Yeah, that's really annoying. Catalyst said the same thing, so that's validated. Super annoying. History should be like engaged views, I think. Did you watch this for more than 30 seconds? Then sounds good. If you didn't, I feel like you would have added it to your watch later playlist. Huh. The algorithm alters it based on your history. Whoa. Whoa, that's super annoying.
Starting point is 02:10:02 You know something I've noticed that's kind of funky is my YouTube premium account is logged into our TV. at home. Yeah. And Emma will watch some things on it because, you know, doesn't want ads. Sounds good. Yeah. I seem to have different recommendations based on the TV and other devices. That makes sense.
Starting point is 02:10:26 It does make sense, but it's just interesting. It's a different kind of content that would be more enjoyable. Yep. So she'll put on like, you know, some like six hours of birds, whatever so that the birds can hear birds. sounds good it will suggest that on the TV I've never seen that suggested anywhere else so it like has
Starting point is 02:10:45 device aware suggestions which kind of makes sense remember when YouTube wasn't sloped like this hmm maybe it was always slop at least that doesn't look like AI slop so that's something yeah true
Starting point is 02:11:08 what do we want to do next yeah something that made me sad here is I went to the Wancho channel, which you should all go to and get subscribed at. And we had tried something slightly different with the title last week. And I was like, oh, it worked.
Starting point is 02:11:27 Hooray! Got them. No. It definitely did not. No. Yeah. Nope. Yeah, that's fine.
Starting point is 02:11:38 RIP. Yep. Very interesting. All right. That's it. Goodbye. Speaking of goodbye, SteamDB acquired by Nexus mods. SteamDB is an independent database offering tons of free data and stats on the entire Steam catalog.
Starting point is 02:12:00 In an official statement, SteamDB co-founder Pavel ex-pao-Di-Jundik explained that the increasing workload had taken a toll on him and led to burnout. After previously struggling to find a team, he trusted to continue the project. He began searching for a new partner in January. Before June of 2025, Nexus Mods was an independent platform hosting user-generated content, particularly mods. Founder Robin Dark One Scott, I like that we're giving their handles, sold the platform to Chosen a growth-focused investment and acquisition group in June of 2025. Chosen's website proclaims we acquire, we amplify, and we conquer, which probably explains why users have concerns. though they seem to have taken a relatively light touch with Nexus mods so far
Starting point is 02:12:48 so we can see so far as we can see pretty casual users we are pretty casual users as far as we can tell they seem to be taking a light approach Got it Chosen
Starting point is 02:13:00 the firm that bought the things says the acquisition is meant to ensure that SteamDB gets more resources and long-term stability yeah that's not how things work at all ever so that's just a lie in terms of the deal we're not disclosed Cool. That final statement is just purely incorrect.
Starting point is 02:13:18 Can we think of an example where that was correct? I believe Toys R Us Canada actually came out ahead after a private investment, a private equity investment. That's the one that springs to mind. But the private equity investment didn't buy it in order to get them more resources and give them long-term stability. I think it was. They bought them in order to make some money. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. They did that in order to make some money.
Starting point is 02:13:44 Sure, sure. Okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, yeah, yeah, yeah. They didn't buy them because they were just like, oh, no, SteamDB. Oh, what would life be without SteamDB? I got to save them. No, they did it because they feel like they can turn a profit, which is fine. It's how business works, but like just come on.
Starting point is 02:14:05 And yeah, the Toys R Us rejuvenation appears to have been temporary. I think they're gone. And the U.S. one was bad. That was like a buy-in gut. but the Canadian one I thought it like yeah they were they were separate companies um okay I got to admit I use SteamDB very casually I suspect that
Starting point is 02:14:32 it'll be a little more annoying with more ads but I I hope that we don't see like too much major change what are the primary things that people use SteamDB for I look at it to see how many players are playing a thing and have been playing a thing. Like I use it as a way of validating, okay, hey, is that game actually relevant? Does anyone care? Is anyone actually playing it?
Starting point is 02:14:55 Yeah, but this isn't the only place you can go. Now you can see that with a $5 a month subscription. What about all the sales calculators and stuff like that? Lowest price. I pay $20 to unlock this. Okay, Dan, are you saying potentially? Or are you saying really? This is potentially.
Starting point is 02:15:12 I heard you say now you can. And I was like, oh. Yeah. I mean, I'm going to be right. Oh, no, I'm not, yeah, no, to be clear, I was not saying you were going to be, I was wondering if this happened already or not. It might as well have. That's the only question.
Starting point is 02:15:30 It might as well have. Oh, man. Because everybody, everybody donates keys to SteamDB. So now this company is going to have data access to every single build that gets published on every single game that it owns a key to. the reason you donate a key to SteamDB is so it owns the game and then can pull files and generate its own log histories of every single time the game is modified
Starting point is 02:15:55 and what files are modified, which is why it's one of the most like unreproducible websites out there. Oh, it owns tens of thousands of games. Licenses for games, Sony might say. True. Very true. Good callback. Like this is really, really scary. It's a very, very useful repository. There are others, but there's not going to be
Starting point is 02:16:22 another one like it. Cool. I feel like this is one of those things where just because I don't have as deep a connection to this particular part of the community, I sort of maybe underestimated the repercussions. Like, I remember being very much like you are about when Social Blade got nerfed by YouTube. That's a huge deal. trashing their API access and then all of a sudden there was just like no there was no way to reproduce that data set and now it's gone forever
Starting point is 02:16:53 and the platform is more opaque because of it. So basically that's what we're headed into. That's what that's going to happen with Steam TV as well, yes. Because it's not just used by like gamers or anybody like that. It's a really useful tool for all sorts of developers or if you're doing market analysis.
Starting point is 02:17:09 It's also a really good way it hooks in with Twitch and the game databases and stuff like that so you can see a history of and who's been playing what game and how many Twitch followers that the peak has been. So if you're a Twitch or content creator and you're looking for games that are maybe more niche or that's really popular, you can also go to SteamDB for that. It's like an incredible resource. And yeah, I don't know what's going to happen.
Starting point is 02:17:38 I mean, the smartest thing that would happen is they just take all the data and put it behind a $5 month paywall. the, like, the worst thing is if they just, like, got it and somehow. Did this site only work off donations? Was that its only income? I have no idea. I think it's very donation-funded. Obviously, people donate keys. There don't appear to be any ads.
Starting point is 02:18:02 There's no ads. This feels a little bit like one of those things that I look at it and go, hey, did you really have to sell this? Or could you have taken a, like, a night school course on business and... They also... like don't have they they mostly just like it's like a wrapper for steams API yeah and that's kind of all the website is so i don't know why they would need cash injection maybe that's just the chosen's uh talking points i don't know i mean i read honestly as i was reading this it feels
Starting point is 02:18:40 like they just didn't really want to do it anymore which is often because the thing doesn't make any money. It takes a bunch of time. And it's, it's an incredibly, uh, high traffic tool that a lot of people use. So you can't like not work on it for no money. Yeah, explaining that the increasing workload had taken a toll on him and led to burnout, which is, I'm guessing, because if it's only donations, a lot of people don't do that. Uh, I wouldn't be surprised if they made very, very little. Yeah, exactly. And donating games to the bot that it has is not. Does not a mouth feed.
Starting point is 02:19:20 You can't buy groceries with that. So I don't know. Maybe. I hope he got a good price at least. Maybe it could be for something. I mean, he built something really useful and really cool. The thing is that if the company just wanted unfettered access to the data. Yeah, he could have just sold them API access and then
Starting point is 02:19:42 he also just didn't want to do it anymore like the way I'm reading this it's increasing workload took a toll led to burnout struggled to find a team he trusted continued to work on the project probably because they also I'm assuming wouldn't get paid much
Starting point is 02:19:58 because it's just a donation site so couldn't find a team so sold it because I think about it it's like one of the most popular Steam game repositories on the internet I took it completely for granted if say there's a tiny issue, you're going to have tens of thousands of people jumping on you immediately to
Starting point is 02:20:18 fix your site that you don't really get paid for it. Yeah. So any such cases. Yeah, that's why I asked like what, what do people use it for? It wasn't a insulty question. No, no, no. I use it for the charts, but I was assuming because people thought this was so important. And there is alternative sites to see the like how many people are currently playing whatever.
Starting point is 02:20:40 Yeah. Because like that can't be the important part. Steam's API. The important part, if you dig into any of it, it shows you like when the store page was updated, all of the builds of the games. And the biggest thing is that the bot, like the account, is gifted all these games, which means that they can see non-public builds. They can get access to like the beta branches and stuff, which aren't public and only can be available if you have a Steam client logged into one of these games. Because Steam pushes you updates, you can parse the files, you can extract anything you want. That's kind of, I think, the only place that really exists for that, because it's the only place that owns this many games.
Starting point is 02:21:25 And has owned them for so long and has logged everything. Ever. Because you can get the charts, because it's got like lowest price. There's even plugins that you can get for Steam, the website that show you that. and like when the game was last updated because if you're looking for a dead game sometimes you can add those types of things right you know
Starting point is 02:21:50 it shows you what time of day builds are posted it writes its own patch notes it attaches everything it's an incredible resource that I hope survives this anyway that's my that's my two cents all right and as Xbox's disc to digital feature rolls out to insiders players are discovering it works for delisted games.
Starting point is 02:22:15 Letting players insert compatible Xbox 1 or Xbox Series X-Disks to receive a digital license for those games. Xbox said it's starting with thousands of titles. However, for the titles not available, the hold-up is on the side of publishers as they have to opt into the program, with players already reporting that Square Enix and Ubisoft games are not yet compatible. So there are publishers with delisted games that have opted into the program? Apparently, one Twitter user report.
Starting point is 02:22:41 reportedly got a digital license for a game that had already been delisted from the store, which others have confirmed doesn't cause any issues and still get saved in your library, regardless of it's available for purchase on the store or not. Discussion question, Xbox good? It's a pretty sick feature. That's really cool. Yeah, that was it. That was just some good news palette cleanser. Yeah, all four Xbox users can be like really stoked about that. You talked about AI being banned before high school, right? Yes.
Starting point is 02:23:07 Okay, kill, kill. This is fun. this is just like kind of a pen pal sort of I don't know whatever he's emailed me a couple times don't really know the guy but he was just like oh I like build stuff
Starting point is 02:23:20 and I also like badminton would you like to see the robot arm shuttlecock launcher I made and I was like yes I would and so he sent me his video and it flings them really fast
Starting point is 02:23:37 and that's it. I don't know. Go watch it. It's pretty neat. Yeah, I don't know, man. Every once in a while, someone just sends me something. I'm like, that's pretty cool. That doesn't have enough views. Someone should watch that. Cool. I do have premium. I just don't have it on my when show one laptop account. I can only buy so many copies of premium. I've told YouTube at least on a dozen occasions. Make a G-suite premium option. I will opt in. I will be happy to cover... It's actually mind-blowing. It is insane that it doesn't exist. It's really, really wild. You pay a ton for the G-suite's description, and even if you had to pay more for it, the fact that we have to
Starting point is 02:24:26 watch ads on our work accounts is crazy. Without going through and like painstakingly buying YouTube premium on them. Like it's... I'm honestly, get pissed because I'll open a video on my work account for work reasons and then have to go, ugh, and copy the URL, go to my personal browser, open it there, and then watch it. It's like, what's happening. Oh, man. You know what? I'm going to just kibosh this one. Let's talk about DLSS-5. Hey, do you want to get even less performance out of older RTX cards? You're in luck. Mauders now have DLSS-5 working on RTF. 20 and 30 series GPUs running FP16. This new implementation is said to be an improvement over an early FP8 version that saw frame rates drop from as high as 138 to just 4 FPS in Deep Rock Galactic.
Starting point is 02:25:21 Nice. Modders have also demonstrated DLSS5 in DirectX11 games with no native DLSS implementation like Batman Arkham Knight and even in DX9 and Vulcan titles and even console emulators. Our discussion question is, was anyone asking me for this? Who is this for? I also want to jump in and clarify something really quick. I've seen DLSS5 even used for like webcam outputs. That is not DLSS5. It hasn't been tuned.
Starting point is 02:25:52 The game developer should be involved in that process. And also DLSS5 in its like properly functioning form needs vector data. So there ain't no way that your webcam output has vector data. So, yeah. Someone's going to, someone's going to try to build some junk to look at. Big mail. Anyways. I'll use AI to extract vector data from the video feed.
Starting point is 02:26:23 And then I'll use AI to take that vector data and. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Some someone's going to find a way. I've seen a couple things like DLSS5, Cyberpunk and, man. it looks god-awful, but I'm mostly going to reserve my judgment for games that come out with it that were intended to have it.
Starting point is 02:26:41 Did you watch our video? No. That's fine. Okay, no. I was trying to think if I did or not, but no. So, depending on how the sliders are tuned, David, greatest of all time, EA, was...
Starting point is 02:26:58 I like that. Has like, I think they ended up getting about half a dozen games working with it, and they took the time to play around with the sliders, find it look good show it working really bad like how a lot of other people are sort of vilifying it
Starting point is 02:27:12 making it look really bad and also finding settings and finding situations where actually looks really good and cyberpunk main characters no NPCs
Starting point is 02:27:27 yes yeah we we've talked about that one yeah I was I was pretty impressed by that what's up I got like frame one by cloud. Oh yeah, the Yas cloud?
Starting point is 02:27:40 Yeah. So I think DLSS-Five figures he's a chick. Yeah, you would mention that, but I hadn't seen it before. Yeah. Now, the one on the right also has a lighting mod applied to it.
Starting point is 02:27:56 It's not just, and the one on the left is the vanilla game that does not have the lighting mod. So it's a little bit of an apples to apple-flavored oranges comparison. But wow, is that ever a difference, hey? Apples to apple-flavored oranges. I've never heard that before, but I like it.
Starting point is 02:28:11 I don't think anyone's ever heard that before. Yeah. In other news, do we want to talk about the massive steam leak? They should have fixed that valve. Over the weekend, roughly 12 to 13 terabytes of Steam server content from 2003 to 2013 was leaked online. It is important to note this was not a hack or a data breach. The files were just sitting on an old Steam 2 content distribution server that had apparently been left online with an unlocked endpoint. This also explains the date range of the content leaked since in 2013 Valve migrated off of Steam 2 servers to its current distribution system, Steampipe.
Starting point is 02:28:52 Who got access first? It's actually unclear who originally found the accessible server. However, Valve content creator Sculcer and Dataminer creator GabeF follower raised awareness of the leaks with Gabe follower corroborating Skulser's account of the the leaks being an unlocked server endpoint. Because Steam 2 was the pipeline, both for Valve and third-party publishers that they used to get content onto Steam, the leaks are not exclusively Valve titles. They include assets,
Starting point is 02:29:21 cut and unreleased development material, and even early playable builds from both Valve and third-party publishers. Notable Valve leaks include a lot of unseen and cut Portal 2 content, like in-game sequences, voice lines and animations, and especially cool as a model for a concept weapon
Starting point is 02:29:39 rumored to have been from the cancelled third episode of Half-Life 2 called the Weaponizer that Valve was using as a placeholder in Portal 2. An early build showing a scrapped prequel concept for Portal called F-Stop showed up where players solve puzzles using a camera to resize and manipulate objects instead of a portal gun. There's also a pre-nerfed Left for Dead build that contains different voice lines, altered map sections, and a different HUD.
Starting point is 02:30:06 There's an early CSGO build, and never-before-seen maps, and much, much more. In addition, Hidden Palace, game preservationists slash archivists have been cataloging the leaks and identified numerous depots with obtainable builds for Sidmeyer Civilization 5, Mafia 2, GTA 3, SpecOps the Line, and an early beta build of Sonic 4 episode 2. Now, our discussion question is, well, actually, there are two angles for the discussion. game preservationists are celebrating this team leaks is there a treasure trove of gaming history that can now be preserved.
Starting point is 02:30:43 Considering these leaks contain a lot of canceled or unreleased content that otherwise would not have been accessible to the public and potentially lost to history, should there be a better framework for preserving unreleased work and would any publisher ever actually agree to one? Totally not.
Starting point is 02:30:56 Yeah. And no, I'm actually, this is going to be... I don't think there should be. This is going to be super controversial, maybe. I fully support companies releasing pre-published work and concept art and concept files and whatever else. But I actually am not supportive of forcing them to do anything like that. I think if we're going to have respect for the art,
Starting point is 02:31:25 we have to have respect for letting the artists cook for as long as their corporate overlords will allow them to and create the best finished product they can. I also might just really hate something about what you had and then be really happy that you updated it and never released it in that state. And now that thing that you never wanted to see the light of day is now being preserved. And that just sucks. Like try to apply that to anything you've done. Tuna fish six in float plane chat says, I demand beta Mona Lisa.
Starting point is 02:32:02 Yeah, I mean, that would be preserved a thousand percent. I also, like, I don't, yeah, I don't, I don't, I'm not surprised. I don't even necessarily blame the reservists preservis I guess but yeah I wouldn't want that if somebody just had like every failed take of every video I've ever done it's like bro yeah
Starting point is 02:32:27 no like why can we can we not yeah yeah number two the leaks occurred seemingly because Valve forgot a server was still running and failed to ensure that the endpoint was locked do you think this is more a result of the scale that Valve operates on, or is it sort of a, if it can happen to Valve, it can happen to you, reminder, to secure your servers? I think it's both. Yeah, it's definitely
Starting point is 02:32:50 both. I mean, if it can happen to Valve can happen to you thing, is, I bring this up often. I think, you know, let's talk about the lab. We're going to talk about them again soon, but let's talk about the lab. The lab still has errors. Everybody has some amount of errors. We've been working on it. This will be a continual forever project, just trying to reduce output of errors from the lab, but the sheer amount of data that we generate, there's going to be some errors in it. And one of my favorite example of like, look, we do be humans was the one of the errors in one of our videos for the 5,000 series GPU launch was an official Nvidia slide that had incorrect information on it. So the error was that we just
Starting point is 02:33:35 believed in video, took their spec information and put it on screen. which was literally a copy paste of a slide, and it happened to be wrong. And you can extrapolate the argument to, like, if it can happen to Nvidia, then it can probably happen to anybody. Yeah, if it can happen to a trillion-dollar company. That doesn't mean you should let your guard down.
Starting point is 02:33:56 Yeah, we should keep trying to do better. Yes. And there were at times where there was a lot. But, yeah, we're continually working on it being less. Hey, speaking of LTT Labs, There's a couple fun articles you guys might want to check out. We happened to have to delid a 14900 KS for an unrelated project. You got to scroll down more on this one.
Starting point is 02:34:18 And we thought, what the hayo? Oh, layer slices. The first one that says layer slices. That's a video. Here we go. Watch this from start to finish. So they chucked it in the CT scanner. I've already seen on the forum someone requesting like high resolution capture of this for
Starting point is 02:34:38 desktop background. replied like immediately and was like here you go yeah um so yeah go you can go you can go check that out if you're into just like CT scans of super cool stuff that layer one just feels like a loading screen to a game or something it's so sick also yeah is our guide to switching to Linux and grieving windows so this will probably be converted into a video at some point over the next little bit if you're more into video but if you're not hey ltttlabs.com go check it out they're doing some really great work. I want to add some quick asterisks to the Linux one. There's already been some comments about this because we tend to post these publicly as well. Um, where like, oh, you said this thing.
Starting point is 02:35:18 Maybe it could have had X, Y, and Z explainers to go along with it. One of the many problems about talking about Linux is every single word is its own rabbit hole. I know. So we did what we could to write about that topic. I think what they're referring to as Linux is in fact Gnu slash Linux or as I've taken to calling it. Yeah. And then extrapolate that to everything. Every single word, every single software choice, every single little tiny thing can be debated into the end of the earth. So we did what we could while also making the article readable. And if you have opinions about it, whatever, you know, there's going to be comments if it gets turned into a video. Let's discuss it, but be respectful or take a hike. Well, I mean, you can give us feedback. I don't mind
Starting point is 02:35:57 the feedback. That's all I'm asking. Yeah, just understand. Be respectful. The confines that we're dealing with is we're trying to make a readable document. And if we really went down every rabbit hole, every path as we were writing, it would have been like hundreds of pages long. We'd be as inseparable as the worst redditor you know. Yeah. So it's not worth it. There's a balancing act. And just like the previous discussion that I had about labs, sometimes the balance will be slightly off. I think this time it was pretty good, but sometimes the balance will be slightly off. And just keep talking to us, letting us know. Yeah, we'll do our best. Yeah. Hey, speaking of doing their best. I've dunked on Plex a lot over the years. Yeah. They finally fixed their downloads.
Starting point is 02:36:40 Hasn't this been one of your things? This is one of my things that I told them I will not work with you again until you fix downloads. Hey. And there have been just basic things about the downloads feature that have been broken for, I kid you not, years. Like one, for instance, is that things would fail out and then there would be, like, I kid you not, if one of the ten of the tenets, episodes of the season failed, there would be no way to retry that one. And also, why do I have to click retry? Fucking obviously, I told you download. Just retry it. Retry it until it's done. I want it done. Also, what is so complicated about this? Run all your transcoding over there, get it done, and then send it to me. And then for a while, it was kind of fixed, but the interface
Starting point is 02:37:28 was horrible. Like they got rid of the ability to browse like your media with your thumbnails and everything and you just like went to downloads and it literally wouldn't even auto play the next one. Like it was so bad. Like it was just a list of files
Starting point is 02:37:43 but like even worse than VLC. Anyway, downloads finally works again. It shows like a proper indicator of all your trans codes. If one didn't work, you can just click retry and it will retry that one, and you can use the actual, like,
Starting point is 02:38:02 media navigation interface now offline again, like you used to be able to back. So they've taken the fix to the actual downloading the files and the fixed to navigating the media interface rather than just having a crappy list that doesn't even play the next one. And they seem to have merged them, and at least on Android,
Starting point is 02:38:18 it's actually working now. That's, you know what? I got to give them credit where it's due. What other things do you have that they need to do? Oh, Lordy. I have a whole list of things that need to work before I'll be willing to work with them again. I'll use the product, but I think it was an email chain with Sven. Like to give you guys some context, Sven doesn't even work in the business team anymore.
Starting point is 02:38:47 And that's how far, okay, that was a recent thing though. He works in the writing department. Okay, here we go. The following are my major gripes. the email is this long I think they still haven't fixed the significantly reduced audio volume when transcoding compared to playing at original quality
Starting point is 02:39:09 no biometric sign in for accounts remembering where I left off is broken a lot of times that's actually a little bit better now yeah there's okay there's still a fair bit of stuff oh man oh man oh man Okay, well, whatever.
Starting point is 02:39:27 Hey, the 24-pin ATX connector could finally be going away, or not. What is it being replaced with? We're getting a new 12-volt-only standard, 12-volt-only V-3. And what's cool about it is the, hello? What is happening right now? I can fully accept that I am wrong here. Yeah. I kind of like 24-pins.
Starting point is 02:39:53 I don't mind it. Yeah. But I'm wrong about that. Yeah. And that's okay. Okay, cool. So 12-volt-only is way more efficient. Oh, okay. Well, that's good. Yeah. Is it just like high power?
Starting point is 02:40:07 Mostly at, no, mostly at idle, actually. Is it going to catch on fire? So it does appear to be one of the little, one of the little mini connectors. Oh. Which I was pretty disappointed to find out. So here it is. I don't understand why. It would be cool if we just didn't do that.
Starting point is 02:40:31 Could we just use this one? Is this really that much smaller than this? This feels like when we got rid of USB MiniB for MicroB, and I was like, is it really that much smaller that we need this fragile, horrible connector? Can we just use MiniB? And the answer apparently was, no, no, we can't. My bigger issue with this, or my biggest issue, is that we're sticking with 12 volt.
Starting point is 02:41:01 If we're going to create a new standard... We know they take so much more power. That is physically incompatible. Why are we not going all the way and going to 48 volt? Yeah, jump. Yeah. That's what I want. Al Lon says,
Starting point is 02:41:16 Mini to Micro wasn't for the size. It was rated for many more insertions and less fragile. Absolute nonsense. I honestly, my... I know it was rated for more, but they were wrong. My far too little numbers, I should feel bad sample size too small, is I had more issues with Mini than Micro personally. Get out. That's the wrong way.
Starting point is 02:41:38 They don't know that. Walk through a wall. I'd have to walk past you guys. I'd have to walk past the camera. I am aware that Micro was supposedly more durable. That was not my experience with it at all. just outside of my own experience on that. I don't know.
Starting point is 02:41:57 People, wow, chat is getting really into this. Some people are highly opinionated about this. Fascinating. A.H. John says, microbeet, it's shit compared to MiniB, full stop. And then, hold on. Someone else said, Dax says Mini is so much better than Micro. Oh, wait, that's the same. Someone disagreed the other way.
Starting point is 02:42:19 It wasn't just everyone. Fresh doctor with the freshest take. I hated both, not going to lie. Yeah, that's fair. I didn't say I didn't hate them. There was a reason lightning needed to exist, and it was, like, it's so funny watching people dunk on lightning after USBC,
Starting point is 02:42:37 like, yeah, iPhone sucks, lightning, blah, blah, blah. So, yeah, the only reason Apple Apple was because what we had before was trash. I unironically liked lightning. I just wish it was more open. Lightning was awesome. Yeah. If just everything switched to lightning, it would have been pretty okay with it.
Starting point is 02:42:55 I liked, I don't know that I still do. I think good USBC cables have kind of transformed a little bit, but I liked lightning more than USBC when it first came out as just like the usability of the connector. Yeah, I'll do it in a sec. Researchers at the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology have built a smartphone clip-on device called sweep LED that costs just $7 and turns your phone into a hidden camera detector. Illegal spy cams have been a pervasive issue in South Korea with mass protests taking place in 2018,
Starting point is 02:43:30 particularly regarding the absurd amount of them in public restrooms. The standard method of finding hidden cameras is to manually shine a flashlight around a room and watch for a small glint or reflection shining back at you. That's tough, though. This works because a camera lens is retro-reflective and bounces light back along the same path it came in on. The problem with this is that it can lead to false positive,
Starting point is 02:43:50 So the team designed an LED array that uses deep learning to catch the unique reflections that occur exclusively when a camera lens is shined on. I just thought this was cool. That's really awesome. There was nothing other than that, and I just wanted to highlight that. I just thought it was really neat.
Starting point is 02:44:03 That's wicked. And you know what else is neat? It's talking to you about our sponsors. Motion Grey. Starting point is 02:46:18 Oh, man. So X-Blit about the first ever live Wanshow read by Luke in the history of the entire Wanshow
Starting point is 02:46:27 no that's not true no no that's not true because he's hosted it without me before in the history of the entire Wanshow it's just been
Starting point is 02:46:34 man we got to be over five years on the streak don't we that might be the first when you're both there that might be that might be yeah
Starting point is 02:46:41 maybe that's crazy the first non-mandatory live read I don't know that's crazy yeah I feel historic
Starting point is 02:46:47 I just wanted to chew my arm off while you were doing it I was just like I don't know what to do right now it sounded pretty good though. You said you're not a voice actor, but you know, that sounded great. It sounded like an ad.
Starting point is 02:46:57 Yeah, good job. Hell yeah. There's, um, uh, what was I'm going to say? I think maybe there's been times where you had to like go run and grab something. So I did an ad. Oh, yeah. But I never heard you do it. Yes, yes, yes. That for sure. I feel like that might be legitimately the first time you've sat through me doing a way and show that. If my butt's in the chair, I'm reading the ad. Yeah. Generally speaking. Yeah. Um, holy crap, we never did the float plane announcements. Oh. Oh. Which strong boy can help me play this clip? This looks like the AI sloppest crap. This isn't even our channel.
Starting point is 02:47:37 What is this? Last my presence. Lost my height. Lost my size. I lost my fear factor. Remember! Okay. Sammy, what are you doing?
Starting point is 02:48:12 I had to prep for that. What's the point? Okay, I think I get it. You'll get it. I'll read it. Yvonne and I got some chickens two months ago, and Sammy went down today to go see the chickens, and I will now put the video live.
Starting point is 02:48:34 Oh, that's a fast. edit okay um yeah so here's sammy with the chicken on his back that's fair and public it is now live yvonne and linus have chickens yeah you didn't read that wrong they got egg incubators from a program that lets you hatch eggs with everything provided and although most people send the chickens back after they hatch they decided to keep theirs yeah i called that by the way so you can you can meet our chickens now uh thanks to sammy through the power of float plane that's how i got my chickens chicken distribution system So you can not only get the float plane hoodie
Starting point is 02:49:08 You can get those chickens too What am I looking at here? What is this? Look at all them chickens I don't have it playing There we are Those chickens Thanks, thanks Stan
Starting point is 02:49:17 Now you're a voice actor Okay, I mean you know what I believe it I believe that's what she sounded like Check out the ugly cute chickens At LMG.g.g slash FPWAN He says I kept it short Because you guys bullied me for my notes
Starting point is 02:49:33 I feel like we just did that again. I feel like they did not get better. I feel like they made it got worse. Do you know why? Now he just posted like random AI short from somebody else on the show. Yeah. Do you know why he played that short? No.
Starting point is 02:49:48 Because chickens and dinosaurs, blah, blah, blah, blah. Apparently Yvonne plays that to your chickens. She does not. There's no way. No, that's not true. I literally don't believe that. Yvonne would never have any awareness that that clip ever existed. I completely agree.
Starting point is 02:50:03 I'm kind of curious about this video though. Calling Sammy a liar. Yeah. Here's our chickens. Oh my goodness. Hi, chickies. Have you trained them to come running to you when you shake the like, we did not need to train them to do that. Yeah, they just kind of.
Starting point is 02:50:20 They definitely do it though. So here's the chicken coop that. She's got shorts on her phone. Did you follow like a kit or a plan or something? So Yvonne found on Facebook Marketplace this. It's like a kid's thing. Okay. And then we modified it to like not have a window on this side and have a nesting box here.
Starting point is 02:50:41 I still need to put a roof on it. I am aware that even stained plywood is not water tight. This is cedar by the way. So this should be fine. Yeah. But I need to put a proper roof on it. And then. It hasn't been that rainy, luckily.
Starting point is 02:50:53 Yeah. Yeah. I've still got a little bit of time. Yeah. Wow. This is a long video. It was 15 minute video about chickens. They're super friendly.
Starting point is 02:51:02 I had no idea how sociable they were going to be. Oh, yeah. they're so lovely. Have they gone in the pool yet? No, they have not gone in the pool. Are you going to get them their own little mini pool for their hut? No, probably not. What a reasonable answer.
Starting point is 02:51:18 Bjork, Burke. You have a few different kinds. Yeah, they're just randoms. Yeah, those are the best when you get like the weird heritage randoms. Apparently they're Easter eggers, all of them though. So we should get interesting colored eggs. None of them are laying yet, though. Cool.
Starting point is 02:51:33 Yep. So, yeah, they're good girls. And we're actually kind of enjoying chicken ownership so far. I know it's... Roasted me for birds for so long. Bird boy, bird boy, bird boy, bird boy. And then don't do a house for them and built a little breeding box. And I know.
Starting point is 02:51:51 And make sure they'd be all cozy. I know it needs a roof, but I have to do that because I love them. It's going to upgrade it. I have chicken water stabilizer, water protector. and I've got like new feeding things and watering things coming. And I'm planning to do some home automation stuff. I was going to ask you to you a whole kit their place. I'm going to, yeah, I'm going to get a heated hose so that I can set up like an auto water
Starting point is 02:52:18 topper upper and like I'm going to have a whole thing. And then like when the valve goes, then I can get a notification so I can go put new water stabilizer in and stuff. It's going to be great. You could automate the dispensing of the water stabilizer. I bet it could. Yeah. Fish pumps have little, like, micro things that maintain stuff.
Starting point is 02:52:36 The sky is the limit. J.K., they can't fly. They fly a little bit if you throw them. They can almost hover. They have slow fall. Oh, that's all the requests I have of you. I think with that we're... Is after dark?
Starting point is 02:52:59 Yeah. After blue? Do we do the what? Oh, I decided not to. I'm over it. Basically, people stole some stuff from gamescom developers, like indie developers, and that was lame. That is super lame.
Starting point is 02:53:15 And I had picked it as a topic because I was going to talk about how some of our laptops got stolen at LTX in the past, and that was super lame too. And like, yo, like, if you're trying to stick it to the man, you found the wrong man. It's not cool to, like, go to small-time events and steal things from people who are there exhibiting. A lot of them, most of them, like, don't have a ton of money. And that's not cool. Almost every con I know is, like, mostly doing it just for the love of the game. Like, they're not, they're not hugely profitable endeavors and they're incredibly different. And a lot of the exhibitors are also there because they, like, really need to be there, not because they're just, like,
Starting point is 02:53:55 swimming in money. Yeah. So not cool. That's all. Yeah. Oh, look, it's purple now. Oh, by East One says, I'm surprised there's been no mention of the new Apple CEO. It's because we did a whole video about it. Someone in Floopplane chat mentioned, like, I can't believe you guys didn't mention, like, the most important Linux news of all time. And then I never saw, I saw multiple people, including myself, go like,
Starting point is 02:54:17 of what? Yeah, are you going to, and then I never saw anyone clarify. I might have missed the message, but, like, I have no idea what they're talking about. It's got ads now. Hey, Wook, Wann, and guest, Luke, you get your license, which float plane would you buy?
Starting point is 02:54:37 D.HC. Beaver. Bevers are great. Twatter. Also, thanks, Linus, for listening to my sales pitch at Whaland. Appreciate the advice. I would get the same one that I flew already. Beaver. Beaver. Hold on. Linus Flying PC. Because I would just want all of my float planes to match. Luke.
Starting point is 02:55:02 What would you fly? I would get this. Oh yeah! Which, by the way, belongs to Luke and someday he will take it back from me. But for now, I am holding on to it for him. Yeah, this is not the, well, come on, Ad. Eight years ago. Yeah, it's still in his garage.
Starting point is 02:55:23 Eight years ago. What's said is this? This is... Is this mid-construction? This is a door. I recognize that plant Yeah, I think we did that Blue door
Starting point is 02:55:34 Multiple times What was that blue door from though? Did we just like get doors? Yeah, what was this? Oh, this is no, this is when the I think this is when the living room was being built. Mm-hmm.
Starting point is 02:55:50 Hello, can this play please? Yeah, I was having issues earlier too. I don't know what's going on with the YouTube's right now. Hello? They might be having a lot of issues considering the dashboard view count things that were acting strange.
Starting point is 02:56:01 This is not my answer. My answer is just the normal beaver, but look at this. Look at this crazy thing. What? I don't know. Circa 1959, twin beaver. So if you flew that,
Starting point is 02:56:15 does your body count go up by two? Do you do two notches in your belt? I'm just wondering how this works. You know, as they say, eight legs. this is very no I'm not going to finish the quote first post of April
Starting point is 02:56:35 did I just get owned maybe oh vintage wings of Canada maybe not experiment tell if this is oh nope it's real I feel like this is gonna be a troll okay I think these are all fake
Starting point is 02:56:54 that's gotta be I think there's gotta be fake but yeah the beaver in no small part because I know nothing about the planes at all but the name sounds cool. So here's, so I think this was a beaver. They're very Canadian. Yeah. Yeah. D-HC-2 beaver. Yeah. So those are, those are cool and have cool names and the only one I knew of.
Starting point is 02:57:17 So Alex and I, um, built a computer into it and then, uh, flew it. And then we're going to need to, I think I flew it as well. No, you never flew it. What? I still have to teach you how to fly it. You do not know how to fly, I don't think. You came with us. But I'm... Isn't that me? That's you. You're right there. But you didn't fly it.
Starting point is 02:57:38 What? Why? Because you don't know how. Oh. Why would you think you know how? I don't know. Do you know how? No.
Starting point is 02:57:46 You see, that's what I'm talking about. But my ignorance makes me not know how difficult it is. Maybe I gave you the stick for like a couple seconds. No, all I remember was coming out here. I think we hit a duck. No way. I think we did. I think we did hit a duck at some point.
Starting point is 02:58:04 Dude, we had. have made so many videos over the years and so much insane oh you can put us back down so much insane stuff has happened over the years that i cannot keep track of it all anymore yeah me neither yeah oh by the way we put an fpv camera in it not fpv rather but like just a recording camera because uh i didn't have fpv tech at that time someone did i didn't i don't yeah i think we just chucked uh i think we just chucked a GoPro in the front? Markiplier would be proud. How cool is that? It feels so real.
Starting point is 02:58:36 It is real. That's a real plane, man. This feels like the special effect from like a super low budget movie from a long time ago. Oh, there's a plane crash. How do we film it? Oh, no. And it would rapidly cut from that to like people in the cabin shaking around. Yeah.
Starting point is 02:58:56 Are they just wiggling the camera? Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Let me see if I can find the spot where we hit the duck. You know what? I can't find it right now. I'm deciding it never happened.
Starting point is 02:59:04 Noki found it for you. Oh, did he? 1447. 1447. And what? 1510. 1447 to 1510. Okay, here we go.
Starting point is 02:59:11 Here we go. Ready? Skipped over a duck. No, I think we hit it because there was like some damage, I think. Yeah, I'm sorry, duck. 1447. Oh, yeah, here we go. Here we go.
Starting point is 02:59:29 Here we go. Skipped over. Oh, no. Yeah, no, we didn't hit the duck. Yeah, the duck bailed out. Okay. All right. Almost hit a duck.
Starting point is 02:59:38 Yeah. The duck ducked. Quality comment, by the way. I have not done that much RC flying, so that was about as good a landing as we were going to get from me. So I have done additional minor amount of research, and the beaver is the only float plane I have also been in. Okay. I've been in a real one flown around. So you might say we're beaver boys.
Starting point is 03:00:02 And I was given a picture of. a beaver flying. Yeah. Really? Can they do that? By Emma's dad for, I think it was Christmas or a birthday. I don't remember which. So definitely the beaver.
Starting point is 03:00:19 I thought they were fur, not feathered. You have to find a mythical one, a rare quality. I mean, on the internet, aren't they all? That's... Oh, Lordy. Can you figure out why we have so few women who watch us? I was so ready for like a real question. And then it was like, oh, yeah.
Starting point is 03:00:55 You should know me better than that. Oh, Lordy. It's not for a lack of being ourselves. Jake. Jade Willow says in floatplane chat, you are officially too old to be this much of a child, Elamayo. You're never, never too old.
Starting point is 03:01:22 My grandfather never grew up. All right, hit me, Dan. Linus, what is a feature or design choice on an LTT store product where you had to compromise your quote-unquote ideal vision because manufacturing realities or costs completely forced your hand. Oh, that's an interesting one. I don't know if I can answer that question specifically,
Starting point is 03:01:50 but I can definitely talk about some situations where the branding has been kind of a complicated discussion. The screwdriver was one of them. We ideally wanted the screwdriver to be something that was really easy to rebrand for, like, white label products. So like other creators could just have LTT screwdriver, but they put their own logo coin in the top or they have their own like easily changeable mold
Starting point is 03:02:18 that we could do really low minimum order quantities on and stuff like that. And there just was not an economical way to do it, just straight up. One that I... There's at least one creator that's interested. Oh, really? Yeah.
Starting point is 03:02:35 Oh, that would be cool. we'd be super down I'd be very supportive as long as they can connected them to internal representatives cool we'll see if it happens oh the pen does anyone have a scribe driver handy no you got one down thanks sorry my tech
Starting point is 03:02:49 sacks not here otherwise I would okay um so oh no yours is right okay no this was something I didn't think we weren't going to be able to do is get the LTT logo right side up on them but then I think we like found a way Yeah, I think my first one's like angled or something.
Starting point is 03:03:07 Is it? Maybe we didn't find a way then. Maybe Dan just got lucky because keying it was like going to be cost prohibitive. Mine's also very old. There's a, oh. And potentially a sample. A clothing one. There's a, there's a lot of clothing stuff like this. So we have like a kind of a patterned shirt, like an all over patterned shirt coming soon that I asked the, I asked the ladies. I was like, so could we have it line up? And they were like, how much fabric do you want to incinerate when we're done making these? Oh. Because it limits how they can cut.
Starting point is 03:03:46 Okay. There's still certain things you want to do. You want it like right side up at least and stuff. Like you don't want to just cut any which way to completely maximize your usage. But a lot of a lot of the cost of like a very high-end shirt that, you know, has like a stripe that goes across the arm and across the chest and across the other arm is actually. is the wasted fabric? How much wasted fabric there is from them doing that? So we make an active choice not to bother doing that.
Starting point is 03:04:13 Because I don't mind spending money. I don't like I don't like wasting it. I don't mind using stuff. It also feels like it's pretty antithetical to the whole reuse thing. Yeah, I mean, we... Not that that is a 100% hard line, but it feels like too far in the opposite direction, I think. It just feels really unnecessary. Exactly, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 03:04:33 And I've always tried to be just like, you know, kind of pragmatic. So there's, I guess what I'm, what I'm getting at here is there's all kinds of these sorts of conversations that take place around just like, you know, how we can, how we can do branding, how we can utilize materials efficiently. Is there just like, I forget, there used to be like an all products link. I can't find it right now. It's what, sorry?
Starting point is 03:05:04 I said it's under socks What a dick It just snicked out I'm so sorry All products there I found it Yeah branding The screwdriver was one that we
Starting point is 03:05:21 No There's one that we talked about Like not branding at all This was one This was one that we thought about a lot Because it happens that the branding Is right at the very end Where you'll have less hook and loop
Starting point is 03:05:34 and I was like, do we really have to brand it all? And we're like, yeah, we probably should. And we were right to do that. Load more. Oops, with that. There we go. Cool. Yeah, we don't need to talk about this anymore.
Starting point is 03:05:51 That's fine. Okay. That's a great picture. He looks so happy. What? Oh, yeah. I'm wearing a plane stuff. I was.
Starting point is 03:05:59 Cool beans. Hi, L, D. Are there any updates on stock, the multi-pocket leggings. Also, have any of you been interested in the War Dogs beta? Oh, no, I have not seen War Dogs beta stuff. I don't even know what War Dogs is, to be perfectly blunt with you. I'm looking, because I don't know either.
Starting point is 03:06:22 Oh, this is an upcoming one. But Tyne and I had a very spirited discussion that ended in, I think we ended up agreeing. He was right about some stuff, and I was right about some stuff. and I was right about some stuff, which is the best kind of spirited discussion. And the HTML and display port cables are going to still have LTT branding, but I think it's going to be like less prominent or something
Starting point is 03:06:46 because we have to fit the like in order to like license it properly, you have to like do it their way, but then we also want to do our plain text easy to understand way and then we also need LTT branding. So I think that there's two different ends of the cable now. each has an LTT on the end on the on the one side and then each has either the display port slash HTML version and our version or something
Starting point is 03:07:11 and it contains all the information or something I can't remember what we settled on but it was like it was the best solution and both people had good ideas and ideas that the other person had a better idea then and I think we came up with a really good one so it's just it's always it's always a balance between functionality and and trying to build something that, you know, people actually recognize.
Starting point is 03:07:33 Oh, yeah, so here's the cable management arches. That's the one I've been searching for. Finding a way, I refused to put branding on the outside of the cable management arches. It's under it, right? It's on the underside. Because I thought this would look like absolute dog butt. It probably would have. You were correct.
Starting point is 03:07:50 So these ended up being an almost completely unbranded product, which totally blows for, like, your branding, obviously. So you can see we just have, like, little stuff on the bottom. So, yeah, buy cable management arches. We make them. But, yeah, don't worry about the fact that there's no branding on them. Sorry about that. There, see?
Starting point is 03:08:10 Yeah, I, that was a really tough decision to make as a team. Yeah. But we explored every option. We were like, we cannot put this on the top. You do say, sorry about that. But if there was big freaking brand logos on my cable management stuff, I think I'd be pissed. Yep. Every single one, every four inches, you know.
Starting point is 03:08:28 I do think there's a value to tasteful branding, though. Honestly. A little tiny screen print on the side would have been fine. The tasteful branding for that product is to put it on the bottom like you guys did. Yeah, we do genuinely try. Whenever I see someone complain that they don't buy like LTT store merchandise because they just like hate really obtrusive branding. It's pretty subtle.
Starting point is 03:08:50 Bro, what are you even talking about? Find me the branding on this. Yeah. Do we still have any of these? These are super cute. You should buy them before they're. gone because I don't think we're going to reorder them. Yeah, we still have some. They're so cute. My cats love theirs. Okay. Hey, chicken, mitten, and Daniel. Luke, what is your favorite
Starting point is 03:09:13 reliant case on? You guys make any good lawn mowing chore enjoyable? So I'll hear this sometime next week. Loll. Going to use these on a super soft for the wife. Sadie Hawkins dance. That is such a basic pick. It's the only song I remember. All right. I'd have to look up. I even have to Google it to make sure it was even from that band. Do you like my sweater? Is that...
Starting point is 03:09:39 Wait, what? That's from the song. Oh, okay. Like hey, songs. Yeah, I don't know. I don't remember these other ones. I just remember Sadie Hawkins' dance. Okay, more.
Starting point is 03:09:57 Give me, Dan. Hey, L and L and D. I was asking myself the other day, if Gemini is inferior to Google Assistant, Why is Google choosing to push it out at this stage of development? I've noticed multiple errors in the OG wouldn't do. I don't know. That's...
Starting point is 03:10:14 What a... If we could answer that, man, do you think we'd be sitting here on some podcast on a Friday night? We'd be sipping champagne on some yacht somewhere, surrounded by... I would be. You guys... You guys would not be drinking champagne.
Starting point is 03:10:36 Yeah, that's true. But we'd be able to. Name brand cola. Sparkling apple juice. No, you know that we wouldn't drink either of those things. It would be the finest... Water. The finest mineral water.
Starting point is 03:10:52 Imported mineral water. The finest still mineral water. You know what? I want that over champagne, to be perfectly honest. I've come around to sparkling water. I've officially entered my dad phase. static water isn't that bad. So, so I started on boobly, bubbly, whatever that stuff is called, because it was a way of weaning
Starting point is 03:11:12 myself off soda and iced tea because I would put it in the same fridge where we that we stock for guests. And then anytime I went to that fridge, I'd be like, no, don't take that, take this. And what started as like the cure became the disease. I'm kind of hooked on it. Almost everyone in my family freaking loves it. Like whatever, they're called steveas or whatever. Is that what they're called? There's some brand. Stevia is an artificial sweetener. Yeah, I know. What's the drink?
Starting point is 03:11:40 There's lecois. No, not that one. I don't know. Whatever. It's some sparkling water, you know, the flavor. Zevia. That's it. The hell is it Zevia? Zevia. They love this stuff. Oh, okay. And it's just... It's just sparkling water, or does it have flavors in it? I don't know. I think it's sparkling water with flavors.
Starting point is 03:12:00 Don't consider this a... This is not endorsement. I mean, my... My response to this is going to say every time I take a sip, I get involuntary shakes. This is not an endorsement. Why do you keep drinking it then? I don't. It's just, you know, every once in a while, they'll be like, this one's really good. You should try it.
Starting point is 03:12:20 Then I'll be like sip. Don't like it. Take it back. You just not like carbonation? Hate it. Okay. All right. Yeah.
Starting point is 03:12:26 I hate it. My kids don't like it either. Carbonation in general? What does that mean? Not carbonation in general. And that's where it makes no sense to me. Because like I used to love pop. I haven't really drank and pop much in many, many years.
Starting point is 03:12:40 But I used to love pop. And so it's not just carbonation in general. It seems to be when it's, yeah, it's just sparkling water. With just no like sweetener. I guess. I think it's the syrup must change something. Do you like just sparkling water? No, like because when you're saying...
Starting point is 03:12:57 Hate it. When you're saying sparkling water, I'm thinking of like water that has sparkles in it. Not flavored. No, no, carbonation. Carbonation. Yeah. Like, that's... He's saying he doesn't like carbonated water.
Starting point is 03:13:10 I meant by sparkles. No club soda. Yeah. Yeah. Like a boulele has flavor zings and stuff in it. Yeah, but like kind of. It's like the memory of what a flavor... Yeah.
Starting point is 03:13:22 I always call it like a lequoise like a memory of strawberries. They're all like light. And I'm assuming the like heavier syrups. I'm guessing it's heavier. I have no idea. It would be a lot heavier. I'm assuming something about the syrups on like sodas. is enough to counteract whatever that is.
Starting point is 03:13:37 Because you're tasting the carbon dioxide. I don't drink any of it much. I just drink flat water all the time. But if you're used to the idea that like sparkling beverages are sweet, and you go and drink one and it's like something's wrong because this sparkling beverage is not sweet. No, it like tastes disgusting to me. The water and gives me like revulsion chips.
Starting point is 03:13:59 I know what you're talking about with the weird taste, though. It's the carbon dioxide taste. Yeah, that's exactly it. like so gross. It has a flavor and that's why some of the bubbly flavors I hate and Costco, freaking Costco I love Costco but like man
Starting point is 03:14:13 both of their two variants of bubbly flat packs have two flavors I like and one that I don't. I just need the one that has all the ones. So every Costco item is like that. Yeah. Every Costco combo item is like that. It'll have two things you like and one thing you hate.
Starting point is 03:14:30 I hate that. But yeah I like it's it like offends me. I will be very thirsty. This happened recently at an event. I was very thirsty and like looking for water and someone figured out I was looking for water and was like, oh, I got you in hand of me one. And it was sparkling water. I didn't figure out until I opened it. And then I had to like go around and ask if anyone wanted it. And I was like, I have it taken a sip. I just didn't realize it was freaking sparkling water. And then I had to spend like a long time finding water again. I was very thirsty.
Starting point is 03:14:58 Charcoal 99 says Costco uses the CD album strategy. Here's something you want By the way, I piled in a bunch of stuff that you hate You have to pay for all of it Yeah This is our reminder that Luke is a super taster The heck is that It's a thing
Starting point is 03:15:15 What is that? It's someone with very high sensitivity for taste I really don't know if I'm convinced The man eats only chicken So just because you can taste super It doesn't mean you have good to taste That is With that context
Starting point is 03:15:30 That is the only way I'd ever accept it Yeah Yeah, I mean, you can get a test for it. That might be a fun video for Sammy to do. Used to be more popular. You have like this strip, and you would probably nearly throw up if you tasted it, but Linus would be like, what the hell is wrong with you? It tastes kind of sweet, and I like this.
Starting point is 03:15:49 That would be fun for our WAN show segment. Yeah, it's like a taste test kit thing. And depending on your ability to taste, it either is very gross or completely fine or tasteless. I don't know if we've ever talked about this on WAN. I don't drink alcohol, but do you know that I get the shakes the same thing that I get from carbonated water from like beer? Did you know that? Well, is beer not also carbonated? I literally have no idea. Yes, yes, it is. Okay, sure. But beer still has heavy... I mean, I don't drink it, but I still know... Beer still has heavy contents of other things in it, the same way of pop way. I think it must just be the carbonate... Oh, but you can drink pop. But I can easily drink pop. So I don't think that argument makes any sense.
Starting point is 03:16:31 just be conditioned that pop is fine or something. Or maybe it's just a stronger flip. But then the strong flavor of beer would be enough to mass carbonation. But that also happens from spirits, which I don't think are carbonated. You get shakes from spirits. Have you considered that maybe you're possessed? So I get shakes from, uh, I was waiting. What do you call it?
Starting point is 03:16:50 Thanks, Dan. I know you got me. I got me on that one. I saw the gears. This is, this is probably not a term that's around anymore. But traditionally seen as like girly drinks. People thought it was the alcohol content. so they would give me girly drinks and I would still get the like revulsion from it.
Starting point is 03:17:05 You know what doesn't give that to me? What are those girly drinks called again? I forget. I know what you're talking about. No, no, what are they called? Somethingers. They're called somethingers. No, that's not a, that's not a coolers.
Starting point is 03:17:19 Yeah, coolers. That's not a girly drink. They're just. Wine also throws me off. You know what doesn't? Whiskey and bourbon. No part of this makes any sense. Do you have a like a sulfate issue?
Starting point is 03:17:34 I went to, so there's this place in Fort Langley, something tavern. You might know the actual name of it. Really like that restaurant, mostly liked that restaurant. They used to do this really cool thing where you could go to like a sit down and they would have multiple courses. And they had a brewmaster there and the brewmaster would pair every course with a beer. Yeah. I don't drink, but I wanted to go do something cool with my dad. So I brought my dad.
Starting point is 03:18:00 And I was like, dad, you're drinking for two? I'm driving. So he just had two of the drinks and I ate the food. And the brewmaster came by and was like mildly offended, but I will ask, why are you drinking none of the things that I personally curated for every one of these dishes? And I had to explain to him like, it just doesn't work for me. Yeah. And he explained some ethanol sensitivity, something, something, something.
Starting point is 03:18:25 There's probably a reason. And he was the one, because I told him, like, I had had a sip of fireball and it was the only thing I didn't react to. so I assumed it was the cinnamon content and he was assumed that that was probably not the case. And I was like, okay, interesting because that's the only theory I've ever had. And it's not one that I've really been motivated to test often.
Starting point is 03:18:46 So I still don't fully know. But the only thing that I knew had not given me the shakes to that point in time was fireball, which I had to take as like a, I think I like lost a bet or something. Right. And my consequence was,
Starting point is 03:19:02 that I would have to take a shot of fireball because everyone thought it would be like horrible for me. And I did too. And then I took the shot and was like, that's fine. Okay. And it was just confusing for everyone involved. Yeah. Interesting. Interesting.
Starting point is 03:19:17 Do you like Glenn Finch? See, here's the problem. I don't like alcohol. So I don't know. This isn't something that I like, you know, try often or experiment with. It ain't missing much. I'm a pretty big fan of being in control. of my brain.
Starting point is 03:19:35 Yeah, but sometimes it's fun to not. Sure. Hello, BBL. I'm currently on my honeymoon in Thailand. Yeah. On our wedding day, I lost my wallet, and my wife lost her phone. No! But other than that, everything was perfect.
Starting point is 03:19:54 Any fun wedding or honeymoon stories? Sure. I almost went to Dubai on my honeymoon. spontaneously because some gaming buddy of ours that we played Left for Dead with was from there and we were like well um santorini was fun for a few days but we're bored now and so let's just leave and so we booked flights and then realized immediately after getting on a ferry to the mainland which is a long ferry by the way and this was quite a few years ago when internet was not just like a given everywhere realized that we didn't have visas
Starting point is 03:20:32 to go to Dubai. Yeah, because you have a Canadian passport, so you're used to not needing those anywhere. Yep. And so we spent the entire ferry ride trying to, can you hear me now? Can you hear me now? Get enough cell phone reception
Starting point is 03:20:48 to on our rudimentary internet connected devices cancel our plane tickets and hopefully get a refund at a time when that would have been a catastrophic amount of money for us to waste on plane tickets we weren't going to use. So that was fun. I don't for reasons. Next question. Hi, DLL.
Starting point is 03:21:12 Favorite video or project that you expected to take off but never did? What would you have done differently? Pick from one of the 13,000 in,300 in about eight seconds. It's not that I expected them to take off, but I was talking to someone about this the other day. I was surprised at how bad? the Pax gaming videos used to do. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 03:21:42 Whoa, nobody cared. Yeah, it's actually shocking how little an audience that cares so much about gaming GPUs cares about games sometimes. Yeah, and like the sentiment was quite positive. The comments are quite positive. You can even look back now and be like, okay, yeah, cool. But man, did nobody care. And like some of them could work if I tied it into hardware.
Starting point is 03:22:06 some way. Like we had some VR content at packs and stuff that worked out. There was other content that we did at packs that was like loosely related to games, but had a grounding in hardware and those would do okay. But it was just if I made like an indie booth top five, nothing. Just like. Yeah, it was pretty bad. Very, very low views.
Starting point is 03:22:29 And I'm talking like five digit total amount of views, which was pretty rough for us. even back then. Yeah. So, and I mean low five digit, to be clear. Yeah.
Starting point is 03:22:45 Negative a thousand. Pretty much. All right. Hit me, Dan. Thanks so much, LMG. To all the people in the room, DLL question mark,
Starting point is 03:22:54 what is your favorite Easter egg in LMG's product lines and of all products outside? Oh, favorite Easter eggs. I mean, one of my favorites is definitely D-brand embedding Easter eggs into their their, what do they call it? X-ray?
Starting point is 03:23:13 The see-through skis that they did in collaboration with Zach from Jerryvig, everything, that then Kastify included in their own copycat version, and that was how D-brand was able to prove that they ripped off the design, was that there were, like, there were errors that was pretty wild. That were just, like, references to D-brand's, like, founding date and stuff like that. That was some pretty ace-tier Easter eggs. I've also heard that there's a little
Starting point is 03:23:38 microscopic engraving on the original Intel 8086, I think it is, from one of the designers or something like that. Like it's etched into every piece of silicon. There's a bunch of different consoles and stuff that will have like something on the PCB. I was always thinking of the Xbox controller which has like Master T writing a Scorpion it looks like. Those are cool. Was it the 8086?
Starting point is 03:24:09 Oh yeah, check this out. What? Yeah, I remember this. There's some, like, comical. There's some comical stuff. This is from PC Gamer. That's crazy. Silicon Doodle Medley, 2023.
Starting point is 03:24:33 Oh, man, websites have gotten so unusable. Yeah, and this isn't literally an Easter. egg at all. But Conrad reminded me of a fun project he did a while back, which was the potato not NFTs, which were literally just pictures. They had nothing to do with NFTs at all. That was fun. That was awesome. I forgot about that. A lot of our garments say do not drop on the care instructions. That's an Easter. A nice little nod to. Yeah, because nobody reads us anyway. The channel, yeah. Hey guys. I'm a small tech YouTuber, the guy who made Float Native, and I'm curious how you balance trying to set content pillars, keep an eye on new audience interests, and obviously
Starting point is 03:25:19 sponsored content, something maybe more there. We're interested in how you do it too and how everyone else does it because, oh my God. Yeah, there's no one right way to do it. You've got to pursue your own interests, right? Like, to thine own self be true, but also you've got to take feedback and you've got to figure out if thine own self kind of sucks and needs to be better, right? Sometimes you've got to be, you've got to be willing to, go for it. No, you've got to be willing to balance like, you know, I think like Phil Collins, okay, we have a lot to learn from Phil Collins because he did very artistic music that quite frankly,
Starting point is 03:26:00 I don't like. And then he also did super poppy stuff that sells records and raises his profile. Let's learn from Phil Collins. I kind of assumed you were going to go down that route because that's similar to what I was going to say. Specifically, Phil Collins? You saw that coming? No, no, no. Oh, okay.
Starting point is 03:26:18 Just the general idea. It's, I mean, I brought it up earlier in the show that Arrowhead quote, Game Made for Everyone is a Game Made for No One. I feel pretty strongly about this idea where if you try to make something for as wide of an audience as possible, you are losing some people. because if you if you like bring a topic down in complexity enough that you can get more and more and more and more people and you do that to the end's degree you are losing that complexity and you're losing the people that might be interested in that complexity and you have to understand that there is a tradeoff there you might be getting way more views but you might not be hitting a certain niche you might not be hitting a certain target audience and there is YouTube channels that do very very very well that don't don't have the views that you might expect. And it's because they have landed squarely on that niche.
Starting point is 03:27:15 Oh, like finance YouTubers, for instance, is a big one. Yep. Yep. And you might be like a specific type of finance YouTuber that really hits it with these, this small group of people, and they're very engaged and they're supporting you. And they're very affluent. And they're worth a lot to advertisers. And they are professionals in the space.
Starting point is 03:27:33 Yep. Therefore advertisers can target people making like, you know, finance software. decisions within their company maybe or something like that. And it can totally work for you. Yeah. But you have to hit that. Like if you get a thousand views of video, but every one of those thousand people is the CFO of a Fortune 1000 company. And that's the audience that you've nailed. What is the CPM of that view? Like mind-blower. Unmeasurable, basically. There was a project we did internally. We have these things internally called All Hands, where once a quarter, we do these like presentations about what different departments in the company are doing.
Starting point is 03:28:08 And we kind of rotate around who does what. And Floplaine had their first one, not that long ago. And there was a decent amount of debate about like, what do we say? It's like, what do the people at Flooplane do with their days is like a pretty complicated thing and very unlike what most of the rest of the company does? So we want to say it in a way that a lot of people can understand, but we want to give the people that do understand the juice, the good stuff. Yeah. But you can't necessarily give all the juice if you spend all of your time explaining some of the base layer things and we have to pack it within a relatively
Starting point is 03:28:44 short period of time. So there was some min-maxing done. And I did get some feedback that, you know, we lost some people. But that there was a decision made largely by me of like, we're going to have to be okay with that to a certain degree. Yep. And I, I, true, we tried to. We also had to trim back some of what the devs wanted to talk about.
Starting point is 03:29:05 That was really cool in order to not lose too many people. So there was min-maxing in both ways. We didn't want to go down to like, okay, sick, two people at the entire company can understand what's happening at all. But they really liked it. Yeah. And so we didn't want to go that far, but we also didn't want to go like, okay, sick. Every single person at the company understood and no one cared. And we didn't say anything.
Starting point is 03:29:25 Yeah. And there's so many other sliders. Luke has really focused on like the complexity slider. but there's any number of other different sliders. I alluded to this earlier, how we need to not be, also was talking about the set in all hands, we need to not be afraid to make a video
Starting point is 03:29:40 that's for the 500,000 people that are going to watch a video about a 5090 gaming computer, because there's a value to that audience that is not necessarily measurable directly in the sheer count. And then we're still going to make videos that target a larger base of people who are more interested in lossless scaling, for instance,
Starting point is 03:30:04 like a couple dollar upgrade that can help them get more out of whatever GPU they already have. I can't wait to get these off. Yes, I saw you both laugh. It's not like I'm not aware of you, both of you, bastards. I thought you were making a joke, I'm sorry.
Starting point is 03:30:18 I was unsure. I was trying really hard not to. I felt you to try really hard. I could tell either you were trying really hard not to or you were focusing on getting the right amount of it for the joke. I wasn't sure which one. Alethe Azora says,
Starting point is 03:30:31 whose idea was this? I love the idea that the right hand knows what the left is doing in the company. It goes back, actually, almost 10 years, when we used to do something called Monday morning meeting, and it was an all-hands Monday morning meeting. But that was at a time when we had like 20 to 30 people, I think was when we capped out and stopped doing Monday morning meeting the way that we did it then.
Starting point is 03:30:51 And then partly just because I didn't want to, because it was stressful and I spent enough of my life presenting, and partly because just there was other things I could be doing and partly because it was not relevant to everyone. Monday morning meeting kind of like faded away and it became an email. And the problem with emails is people don't read them. And so we still do Monday morning meeting.
Starting point is 03:31:12 We actually call our Monday morning email, Monday morning meeting. MMM. Because it was originally the email summary of everything we talked about in Monday morning meeting in case anyone was missing or absent. Not missing. Absent. and then to supplement Monday morning meeting
Starting point is 03:31:29 which is now an email we also have these quarterly all hands at like town halls and yeah I think it's been a really positive thing we're really refining the format for them the first ones were there was a lot to learn
Starting point is 03:31:45 because we'd never really done anything like this before not everyone's comfortable presenting we don't know how much to prepare how deep to go on our topics and then one of the pieces of feedback that got a lot from the first ones is that like we were hearing from management but we weren't hearing from ownership. So I talk at all of them now just to make sure that people are kind of, there's a lot of people who work here that I don't interact with. And that was something that took me a long time to wrap my brain around because to me, you know, my way of thinking is like
Starting point is 03:32:14 very intuitive. I don't know, just like spend but don't waste. Um, take risks, but don't do anything stupid, you know, like just general principles, but people who have barely even met me, are not going to be able to do that. They're not going to be able to understand that. They're not going to be, they might not, they might be kind of afraid to, to take a risk, right? Like, it's their job. And that can be really scary.
Starting point is 03:32:40 And I, so I just, I kind of had to come around to the idea of like, oh, yeah, I need to, like, do addresses because I don't actually work shoulder to shoulder with everyone. And there's a huge disparity. The people that I work with, I work with a lot. I get to know them a lot because we're like stuck on planes, trains, and automobiles together for like hours at a time sometimes. And like what? You could just sit there awkwardly, I guess, or you could make small talk once in a while, right? Like when we did that factory, sorry, not factory tour that data center tour with Hetzner, like I drove like a total there and back of like five hours with like, like,
Starting point is 03:33:25 two guys in the car. Like, what are we going to do? Sit in silence? It's crazy. And but then on the flip side, there's people who spent their entire time here, sometimes spending multiple years that I never spent two and a half hours with total. And I just, I see people I've never seen before at every all hands. Yeah. It keeps happening. Every single time. Yeah. Remember when we were sitting in the fish bowl and then just slowly over time more people would walk by than we didn't know who they were? That was crazy. Because I've, nearly been here for five years. That's crazy. And I think I was like, 50, 50 or 60 people. Like I was still here when we were doing the Monday morning meetings. You know who's real close to
Starting point is 03:34:07 their 10 year? AJ. I thought he was at 10 years. Well, it must be, it'll be this year then. That's crazy. Yeah. That's crazy. Float plane is officially 10. We didn't do anything to celebrate. We should have gotten a cake or something. We'll do float plane cake. I think there's like something happening. It's not actually 10 yet, to be clear. Oh, yeah, because it would have just been, like, the forum delivery mechanism. Not even yet. But we started that before AJ started. Yeah.
Starting point is 03:34:40 So if he's 10 years now... If I remember correctly, it was November 1st. Oh, so we're, like, very close. And there's some confusion because the original forum thread where, like, AJ posted his idea and stuff, I think is gone. I think it was lost in one of the data losses. Some stuff was lost, because I was looking for an old post of... of mine about some controversy or something. There was some data loss.
Starting point is 03:35:01 That was like actually an important sort of piece of anyway. It doesn't matter. The point is it's not there. And I was like I was actually really worried about the optics of it looking like I deleted it, but I didn't. Okay, well, that explains it. Interesting. Yeah.
Starting point is 03:35:20 I got another one here for Luke. Lemon blueberry making eye contact with people when I'm talking to them is not an option. You can either have me pay attention to you or you can have me make eye contact with you. This is the only that's a binary choice. It's also not that we don't like, I don't, whatever. Anyway, sorry.
Starting point is 03:35:39 Neurodivergency. I haven't tried any my meds yet, but I will. What's wrong? Oh, no, don't answer that. Grab bag. That's so cool. Yeah, my doctor's cool. Yeah. Not as cool as my vet, though.
Starting point is 03:35:54 It's like, hey, do you want to do some together? for Luke, with all of the things a person can do with AI and it being everywhere, what is the one thing that you have found that you use it for that makes something you didn't like fun? There's still a lot of use cases that I don't do because I don't want to engage with it on other people's platforms by doing those things. If that makes sense, I don't want to use chat GipD. I don't want to use Claude. I don't want to use Gemini for that kind of stuff.
Starting point is 03:36:31 Something that it was useful for recently that I've been interested in talking about on works scale. Gemini. No, that's the NASA missions. Gemini. Is a fact-checking tool, which is interesting. There was something I was working on outside of work recently that I was like, you know what? I'm going through and doing a lot of painstaking work to fact-check.
Starting point is 03:36:56 this thing. I'm still going to do that, just like how labs uses some stuff for early detection, but still has all the human processes. I'm still going to do that. But can this thing find stuff for me and streamline things potentially? And it did, which was kind of interesting. I had to use it on pretty high context. I also had to give it a lot of rules. Like, you know, your success metric is not finding more things. Your success metric is like having everything nicely cited and being able to prove that what you're saying is correct, stuff like that. Because if you don't give it those guide rails, it'll be like, oh, I found tons of stuff. And then half of it's not legitimate.
Starting point is 03:37:36 Right. But yeah, fact checking is an interesting use case of it. You have to follow everything up. This is something that I think drives me the most insane with AI stuff is that people want it to just blindly one shot everything and they don't want to look into anything. And it's just like Google Fu. Like you've got to get good at guiding it to guide you. If it flags something, go, okay, cool, it gave me a cited source.
Starting point is 03:38:05 Like I asked, let me go read that source and check it against like where I got this information from. And maybe they disagree. And maybe that's a whole story in its own right and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. But yeah, that's been pretty interesting. I still, my main use case still is just sentiment analysis. So I'll like be writing a message to someone and be like, I am unsure about how this will be received. So I will ask it, be like, hey, what, you know, do a sentiment analysis on this message.
Starting point is 03:38:37 What do you get from it? And I don't use its output. I often have to tell it, hey, stop because it'll rewrite my whole thing. You'll be like, you should say it like this. I'm like, that's not my point. What are you getting from what I said? And then I might rewrite my own thing and then send it to it again and be like, okay, how about now and just keep iterating like that. That is my most commonly used use of it. I've been trying
Starting point is 03:39:06 to use it to learn certain skills, which is interesting because if you try to get it to act like a teacher instead of doing something for you, you can actually get it to do that pretty effectively. I've done that with Linux a decent amount. I think I talked about that during the Linux challenge where I was using AI. I did not just go like, how do I do this? Give me the back. command and then copy paste bam I would if it gave me a bash command I'd be like okay break this down what all these little things do if I'm putting this into fs tab I want to know what what is the zero what is the zero space two at the end actually do I like calling it f stab me too people not call it fs tab yeah they call it fs tab and I tried to
Starting point is 03:39:50 be no by calling it that way but it felt icky because f stab is so much cool Stab. Stab. Yeah. F-stab is just awesome. Anyways, so, like, I try to use it to, like, break things down, help me understand. And I'm planning on using it for more of that, little projects around the house and stuff. If I'm like, I have an idea, I don't know how to execute this. I'll try to get it to, like, break this down into steps, come up with a plan so I can, like, learn how to do this myself and then, and then do it. Nobody asked me, but I'm enjoying the heck out of it for my home assistant journey. Yeah. Because it's, for better or for worse, something that I can. can talk to at three in the morning when none of my team's contacts are available and I don't have to dig through Reddit. And so like one of the things that I did was a home assistant doesn't natively support binding deeper linked pages within the like settings interface into the side panel. And I was like, this is ridiculous because I have to click three interactions every time I want
Starting point is 03:40:51 to get to like my devices screen. I just want one in the sidebar. And the only way to do that is you have to go modify a text file. And Gemini was able to guide me through how I, it showed me how to do one. And then once it showed me how to do one, I was able to do all the ones that I wanted to do. And now my navigation is fixed. I was like, yay. Yeah.
Starting point is 03:41:14 Yeah. Oh, man, I had someone to say, and I don't remember now. Sorry. Shoot. No, it's fine. Oh, I cared about it. I don't remember what it is. Darn, it's gone.
Starting point is 03:41:30 Okay. Oh, well. Well... It's fine. Do I do it now? Oh, that's all. No? You still have to do your line. Oh, do I?
Starting point is 03:41:42 Yeah. You're not allowed to change. Oh, well, I mean, do you do my line now? I'm just, I'm so confused. Everything is Tusty Turby. One ad spot just throws a man. Thanks for doing it in. We'll see again next week.
