Why don't we jump right into our first topic, which is, of course, the big leak. Within hours of NBA 2K-27 shipping out early access copies, moders of the Renault-DX community discovered

a never-before-seen library called NVNGX underscore dLSSNR. DLLSNR. DLL. which unlocked access to DLSS-5 ahead of the fall release. Well, as you can imagine, pretty quickly,

Mauders got DLSS-5 running on other games like Control, and within a day it has been spread like absolute wildfire and is now working on pretty much any game that has DLSS and supplies the vector data that is required for DLSS-5's implementation. It is not perfect. And I tried it today. It's not perfect. The library itself is experimental.

So don't expect features like HDR to be fully functional. But what is available is sliders that allow you to play around with things like color and tone mapping of the neural rendering implementation as well as, I forget what this slider was actually called. But it almost is like the like the sharpness of the neural, uh, of the neural, um, you know, object recognition and sort of enhancement. It's not quite sharpness. Okay. Yeah, like it's not like a smoothing, sharpening filter. It's sort of, it's like it's kind of hard to describe.

So we did a video. There's screen cap. You'll see it once the embargoes up. You understand at that point. Do we have, oh, once the embargoes up. Yeah. So the whole thing's a little complicated. So for publications that signed a DLSS-5,

embargo agreement with Nvidia, well yes and no, because we can, once something has already leaked outside of embargo, we're allowed to report on it because we're not the ones who broke the embargo. So, Nvidia's

still going to give us an official demo and we're bound by the embargo of that, but everything that just like was out there and we found on our own without anybody providing it to us from Nvidia, then there's no rules around that. Yeah, because I was going to say that would be a little bit ridiculous. So basically,

we're going to release our video at the embargo with all the information Nvidia gave us, and then also everything that we tried on our own. So it's going to be a way more complete look at DLSS-5 than we originally intended and originally were going to be enabled to do. What stood out to you the most that was good and what's out to you the most that was bad? The thing that stood out to me the most, period, was how good And how bad it could be. Okay. I think that based on what I looked at today in

Cyberpunk 27, so I'd like to make it very clear, this has nothing to do with any of the information Nvidia provided to us. We downloaded a DLL. We copy-pasted a DLL. We played around with some sliders. There's actually three different models to cycle between. In Cyberpunk, I saw the best

sales pitch that I've seen yet for DLSS-5. And I think that it's something that even though actually it's a really great segment, you guys should go watch it. Luke, Riley and I all sat down right after the initial DLSS-5 unveiling and just talked about what this means. We talked about artist intent. We talked about, I mean, I think that was really the main focus of the conversation. And what everyone was really focused on after the announcement,

initial unveiling that Nvidia did was main characters. Understandably so. Because these are the characters that we are intended to form a connection with over the course of the story that were being told or

the gameplay experience that we're having. But in cyberpunk, it's a first person game. I actually, it didn't even occur to me. I never even bothered to look at my own character model. Walking around on the street the sort of like

mostly baked NPC models are the ones that benefited in my humble opinion enormously from a little bit of like oh yeah they probably intended

for that to be a cheekbone let's make sure there's a little bit more definition there oh and they probably intended for that chain to be shiny and not just grey let's just enhance a little bit

and not specifically those details necessarily because this is still the first gen. So this was like a movie. It's using that software to enhance the extras. Yeah. So they can focus more on main characters. That would actually be really interesting as like an option to have it not pay attention as much to the things that you know that the artist spent more time on.

Yeah. I don't know that that will necessarily be an option. It doesn't appear that the current implementation is like that because it's more. more of like a neural filtering of everything that is on screen at the moment. But this is the most cringe. I want to just punch myself in the face, TechBro line ever. But the DLSSS5 that I experienced today is the worst version of DLSS5 that there will ever be. And I see...

Yeah, I understand why you said all that now. I did. And I meant it. But I can see, I can see the grains. of shiny in the in the sea of oh my god what did they do to cloud strife so there's some gold in this pirate we fired up rebirth and admittedly we also had some mods on um to help with like lighting but um how do i how do i put this delicately dLSs 5 clearly thought he was a chick oh if that kind of makes sense?

Whoa. Like, like, like, uh, which game was this right? Uh,

Final Fantasy 7 rebirth. So it went and like, like dramatically reddened his lips. And he's got a little bit of eyeliner because he's a final fantasy character. Of course. But it went like hot topic. Eyeliner on him.

And. So the Cloudstrived Comet was not just like a random comment. No. Heaven's no. Yeah, and the funny thing is that in the, so we went into like photo mode in the game so that we could kind of line up the two systems. Like we had a side by side so you could see the original rendering. And you know what? Chats like, is this an issue?

I mean, hey, it's 2026, baby. Well, the thing that that could hurt is artistic intention. Yes. So as long as that's what Square intended, then not at all. Which I don't think it was. But they didn't go that dark with the eyeliner. Yeah. And they didn't go that deep with the lipstick.

You know what I'm saying? Yeah. And, you know, the funny thing is Tifa and Barrett looked pretty deece in the background. Where we really run into trouble is where we get in too close. And it's just too much. But with that said, you know, these sliders that you could kind of fine-tune really did untow much it quite significantly. However, here's the issue. Those sliders are developer sliders, not sliders that we as gamers are necessarily going to have access.

At least not now, not going to have access to. So as much as, and this is where you get into a really funky conversation, right? Because I think that for the most part, the community is pretty aligned, that artist's intent should be the guiding star. But if they have the control, that's still artist intent. If that's the case, then should you not install a mod on your game? I think it's the delivered package should be artist's intent. If you install a mod, that's you deciding to do something to it. Sure.

Not a third party company. I think that's where the problem lies. I mean, the mod is created by a third party, right? Yeah, but you're the one that chose to install it. You did. You did. So this is where we run into a little bit of a little bit of complication, right? because I've installed mods that I think look better.

Yeah. And in the same way, I might like to play around with a slider, right? To my tastes, and I might enjoy that better. The artist might choose full yassification. If they do that, if the artist's intent was to apply maximum AI slop filter, you see where I'm going with this now? where are we at here? Because they can.

And it can apparently be done scene by scene. So they can decide full yes, 70% yes. I assume... 10% yes. I assume that the community assumption, whether true or not,

would be that that was forced upon them for them to take less time. It does not appear... It does not appear to necessarily... I don't mean by NVIDIA, I mean by the managers of the artist. Here's the thing, though, guys. Not every artist is tasteful.

and that's not to say that they don't have taste that is valid it's to say that it doesn't necessarily match yours and there are folks out there making games that are embracing AI they're absolutely out there so if your

if your concern is that there will be games that will be like yassified because of this some of it will be from developers and artists being rushed some of it will be an active choice and the frustrating thing for me is that I don't necessarily get that slider.

It's kind of where I'm coming down to. You want it? Is that what you're saying? Yeah, I want it. Because to me, artist's intent matters to the extent that, you know, I want to at least have an option to experience it exactly as the artist intended. Like, right, to your point, like the delivered package should be the artist's intent. But then beyond that, if I want to apply a slop filter or I want to add a lighting mod, or I want to do whatever, to say Minecraft, for instance. I wonder, I'm trying to think, like, is there, is there something to the idea of, of it being kind of like, like, would it feel better for people if it was under a different menu?

Like, if it's under the video settings, it does it feel weird? Because the video settings are like, basically intended quality levels by the creator. That is how it has always historically been. So, do you mean video or graphics? Sure, either one. Well, sometimes, I know. That's why I'm that. Yeah, okay. Because video now in a lot of games just means like resolution. Yeah. And sometimes scaling's over there, but sometimes scaling's under graphics because nobody can agree. Very inconsistent. Yeah, but yeah.

Anywho. Yeah, carry on. But either way, like, I think if it like shipped baked in with like a modifications menu and then you had these sliders, I suspect people would be like more okay with that. However, what would happen is people wouldn't enable it. and then Nvidia couldn't get up on stage and talk about how 80% of gamers use DLSS. No, just the sliders. Oh, just the sliders.

Yeah. Dude, I'd be so down for that. Yeah, because to me, I think, because you're saying it should basically feel the equivalent to mods. But I think that when I launch a game and I don't have any mods in, anything in the menus are intended options, intended settings from the game developer. But if I think about like Baldersgate, Baldersgate has a button for mods. Yeah.

they're fully embracing mods, like very enthusiastically fully embracing mods. So if I keep that line of thinking going, then it's like, okay, well, what if we just have it under a different menu that communicates the idea that you are now exiting intended experience?

Advanced options submenu. Sure. Something like that. Yeah. Just something to divide it away from intended experience settings. To be clear, I don't think we're getting any of the things

that we want. Not at all. Yeah. Yeah. I don't think we're getting the sliders. I don't think we're getting the sliders. menu. This is all irrelevant.

But I just, I, but I think it's an interesting conversation to have anyway, because I do think that the, the concept of an artist's intent is going to get muddier. The second an artist includes an AI filter as their intent. Here's part of the fun fact, too, is like, I pretty much guarantee you, AI assisted stuff is going to end up in the modding scene too. Oh, 100%. So it's. And here's something that is.

is, you know, going to ruffle some feathers. The second I saw those NPCs look so enhanced, by the AI filter, I kind of went, well, what's up with those kebabs on the grill? Why don't they look more like real meat? You might as well. We've gone this far. Oh, it didn't? Point of no return, baby.

It seems like most of the optimizations that I saw were really focused. focused on character models. I didn't check out every demo, and it's worth noting that this is not final. That could be super weird, to be honest. That could create, like, a disparity between the graphics levels.

It really depends. It depends on how you tune the sliders. And we do, for now, anyway. We've just got to kind of trust developers to tune the sliders in a way that is not going to create that sort of uncanny value, but only for certain objects. Like, can you imagine playing like a Nintendo game?

You know, you're playing like a Mario tennis game or something like that. And your AI sloppification filter turns it into like a photo realistic tennis ball. Like, it was one of the things that really knocked me out of. Or like you're playing Mario tennis and then Mario looks back at you all of a sudden. It's just like a human face. Yeah. It's like what? Yeah.

Like it's one of the things that knocked me out of my immersion for how to train your dragon. hidden world, the third one, is because they wanted to retain the art style of the earlier films for the characters, but they were walking around in these like hyper, photorealistic environments, and I just

found it, I found it kind of jarring. It's like that's a real tree. And like, hiccup is standing next to it. What's going on here? This is why I would want the sliders under like a weird menu if they were, if they were given to users. Right. Yeah, I could definitely see that. Because you could easily end

with something that looks pretty crap. And I could, you know what? From a game developer's intent standpoint, I could see them not wanting to give us those sliders. Because I'm going to go on Twitch, I'm going to stream my gameplay. It's going to look like absolute dog poo. And people are going to see my game like that.

I'm going to be like, no, no, no, no. I didn't mean for it to be that much. Or, oh, the color looks all wrong because it was intended to run this. And I haven't even touched on performance impact. Oh. again, this is, you know, Nvidia did not officially enable this

in anything other than NBA 2K 27, okay? Which I have not even tried, right? Because that's part of, from my understanding, the embargoed experience. But she hurt. Oh. She hurt big.

Big hurt. Like it takes a lot? Oh, yeah. Okay. Yeah, it's a big performance penalty for enabling it because there's no way you're just doing this on your tensor course, right? Like you're going to need

GPU compute to handle this thing. And it's running in real time across multiple. I was going to say many frames each second, but I won't say that. Multiple frames each second. I have a theory. You know how we're Nvidia's rolling out? What's their current generation? Like what's their,

What's their newest generation data center architecture? Rubin? I can never keep track of all the stupid code names. Nvidia's newest data center architecture, blah, blah, blah. I think it's Ruben. Yeah, yeah, Ruben. Yeah, so like Rubin. Well, where the crap is desktop Rubin?

Nowhere. We'll talk about it, CES. Maybe. Next year, maybe. We might finally get 50 series super refreshes. So what I kind of wonder is, was this never intended for 50 series? Like, does 50 series simply not have the neural processing to actually do any of this? And I'll never know the answer to that in all likelihood.

Yeah. So this is a building of want, growing desire. may people want new cards I mean I if implemented in the best ways that I've seen it work I would want a new card

to use it you know how last week we were talking about how Intel was discussing but how there's kind of like two segments of customers now it feels like maybe Nvidia is effectively doing the same thing

dude I think Nvidia's I think Nvidia clued into that a decade before anyone else and they like even on their software side now, which I feel like they haven't really done before. Oh, yeah. Yeah, I mean in terms of the features.

Like, I fully agree with them. And I think they'll try to deliver like a somewhat featured DLSSF5 experience on their, you know, 50 and 60 class GPUs. But it's just like we saw with 20 series. Yeah, some of, D3i happy in the float plane chat pipes in with like 20 series with ray tracing. Where the first generation products, especially like the mid-tier.

level entries are just, they're never realistically going to run with the full performance and quality of this new feature that debuts on them. And it's always been like that. You look back at the first generation that supported Tesolation. You look back at the first generation that supported even like full-on like DirectX feature sets. Like the first DirectX9 GPU, by the time a good-looking direct X-9 game existed to run on it was like yeah yeah it was not really powerful enough to deliver a cutting-edge experience and there was new hardware that would run it better I feel like we should probably

I would say that the way that I got Yvonne into PC gaming, like keyboard mouse, FPS, like PC gaming, was making it a super social experience. This color way of Logitech stuff, however, seems to go over quite well. Okay, all right, there you go. So maybe like a gift,

like something that she'll feel some, you know, I'm not telling you to be manipulative, but something that she might feel a bit of social pressure to use. that what giving someone a gift does put pressure on them to use it they asked how to convince her how to get how to get her to do it i'm just i'm trying to be helpful so yeah gifting her a mouse if it's for like a birthday or something you might want to get them something that they yeah this should be outside of anniversary's birthdays valentine's days a random yes yes yes a random fully acknowledging with the self-awareness that everyone knows

I am gifting this to you so that you will use it with me. Yeah. And then creating opportunities to use it together. That's where I come back to like the social experience. So what really got Yvonne

into gaming with me was playing TF2 with our friend group and Left for Dead with our friend group. So finding a game that she is motivated to play because then she'll be motivated to like learn. And it does take time. You have to be patient.

But I'd say that something that is more strategy-based, like giving her a role in the game that doesn't require, like, Twitch aiming necessarily right away. Like, Yvonne loved playing medic. She was an outstanding medic because she's got just good situational awareness. She doesn't have to necessarily have perfect pinpoint accuracy aim, and she's got good comms. So, like, A-plus.

So, yeah, finding a game that is a little more inclusive, that way might also help. Anything else you can think of? That makes a lot of sense. the game selection can be really good. I'm not going to remember the name of it, but there's some game that's been getting around lately, which is in the like the friend slop kind of genre. Deadlock.

No. But it's, you play like some form of video. Like one that I saw was the Mustafa scene with Obi-Wan and Anakin. and they take all the voice lines out and you have to voice act them. Oh, that's fun. How does that involve a mouse?

That one maybe isn't the greatest option, but there's like a variety of different games that can kind of get them into the idea of playing games. I mean, even Mecha Chameleon, it's first-person shooter controls, but really what you're doing is like playing hide and seek. There's not a lot of pressure to like hit something with pinpoint accurate,

but that yeah or like a more cooperative building game like play some Minecraft survival yeah or something like that like something where you can carry without it being like patronizing Valheim yeah Valhine would be Valhine would be a great option my family plays Valheim yeah and that includes your mom

yep and the people that are less interested in combat can focus on equally extremely important things yeah like the base because if you don't have good like food in that game, you're basically useless. So like, the combat people can only be effective if the base people are doing a good job. So, like, it's, it actually matters a lot. And then if they want to come out on expeditions with you and stuff, they can.

But then if they get overwhelmed or whatever, they can just go back and hang out in the base. And then the last part is be okay with that. If they never become a professional FPS player, then that's okay. Find games, find experiences that work for both of you. Yeah. Okay. I think we actually, I think we answered that one pretty okay.

and safety lawsuit for $17.1 billion. And by settling, has agreed to introduce huge changes to how teens use Instagram and Facebook. Meta has also had to change. Oh, okay, yes. Changes to the teen experience are as follows. A two-hour default daily limit across Facebook and Instagram. Parents are the only ones who can lift this limit. And there's a conditional further change.

If other social media platforms agree to similar terms, the daily time limit could drop to just one hour, which I actually think is closer to probably where we should be. Basically, they're saying they'll go lower if other platforms do too. And I hate to agree with meta about just about anything, but I actually think that that's fair enough. That seems fair. It should be a level playing field.

That seems fair. They should all be reduced. A night mode block that stops teens from posting or viewing their feed stories, the Explore page or Reels from midnight to 6 a.m. blocks on notifications by default from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. during the school year and 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. all year round. Promps and nudges to stop every 15 minutes of continuous use and at 60 and 90 minutes of total time spent on the platform, hidden like counts. Now that's interesting. And disabling cosmetic surgery and extreme makeup filters. This actually sounds like a pretty good start.

The other part that sounds pretty good is the $17.1 billion. Yeah, like an actual, no, but this is an amount of money that we care about amount. Yeah. Okay, so you'd only get five years because you'd have to be 13. Relating to the settlement amount. Okay, this is, again, where I hate to agree with Matta, but I actually kind of see their point. 70% will be paid annually over the next 10 years, so they do get to pay in installments,

which at the rate that inflation's going, that payment they make in 10 years is going to be a lot less money than it is today. It should inflate. with it. It is a lot of money. I can kind of understand why this can be on a payment plan. But the remaining... I agree. You should just inflate over time. The remaining 30... Oh, yeah, if there was interest, then I guess that would balance everyone's... Like, every payment plan should generally work. I agree. They should do that. I don't know if it... Anyway, there's two other conditions. One is that YouTube and TikTok have to implement a one-hour daily limit, night mode and age insurance measures. And the next one is that YouTube and TikTok have to each pay an amount matching the 30% figure. So that, the first one, yeah, totally agree. So they still got a good deal, like by a, order of magnitude. So, a lot of people are upset about this. They see $12 billion as a slap on the wrist compared to either of those above figures. But one possible... It was never going to be $1.4 trillion.

They're calling it giving Sony a small taste of its own medicine after the company announced it will stop producing games in January 2028. The testimony comes from a former Samsung engineer identified only by his surname, Gian. who spent 28 years at Samsung before jumping to CXMT around its founding in 2016. He was sentenced to seven years in April for illegally obtaining Samsung's process recipe plan, a roughly 600-step blueprint that covers DRAM manufacturing steps, equipment, and process conditions that took Samsung five years and over a billion dollars to develop. The court found that he took about $2 million from CXMT for it. This month he testified in Seoul,

Finally, Gizmodo reports on a wired investigation into Flock's new AI tool. The new system lets police and other flock subscribers search using natural language and includes 69 pre-written prompts that officers can modify. Flock has come under additional fire following a string of revelations of officers abusing its technology. Their Android community engagement manager, Michelle Rahman, announced on Reddit that the advanced flow has started its gradual rollout. So this is the process for installing apps from developers who haven't registered with Google,

and it arrives ahead of enforcement, starting September 30th in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand before expanding worldwide in 2027. Side-loading apps from registered developers works the same as always. Raman also confirmed the source of the APK is irrelevant. So an unregistered developers app will trigger this flow, whether it came from FDroid or another app store or directly from a website. So here's how the flow works.

If you want to install one of these unregistered developer apps, you open up your developer options. You turn on, allow apps from unverified developers. You authenticate with your screen lock. You confirm that nobody is pressuring you to change the setting. Then your phone makes you restart and you wait a full 24 hours. After you wait 24 hours, you come back and choose whether to allow unverified apps for seven days or indefinitely. And then installs will still show a warning with an install anyway button.

what Google says is that this delay exists to break up scams where victims are coached through installing a malicious app live on the phone since scammers can't keep someone on the line for an entire day. The flow covers updates too, so if you switch it off, your existing unverified apps will actually stop updating until you turn it back on. Rahman defended that by pointing out a safe app installed today could push a malicious update tomorrow. So all of that sounds like a lot of users. restriction that if we're being realistic, probably won't work because if I'm a scammer, I'll just be like, okay, I'll call you back tomorrow. sort of saving grace here is that power users do get an escape hatch because installing over ADB from a computer skips the whole rigmarol. So, see, that, That helps a lot, actually. When they originally announced this, because we've talked about this before, when they originally announced it, people were still super mad. They were like, but my freedom. And I was like, yeah, but they already kind of backed down on this a little bit by allowing ADB. If you could ADB an app onto the phone, then in my mind, this doesn't really affect developers anymore.

Sorry, my interpretation of that was you could shift it into this mode through connecting it to a computer and then it would skip all the time gates. meaningfully cut scams unless there are changes to the Play Store itself. And I think that is actually the most... fundamental problem here is that Google is laying, because I do think the actions that they're taking will help, but agree 100% that it would have to be done in conjunction with changes to the Play Store, because so many of the apps that scammers use are in the Play Store. Nice. And it's just, it's interesting. the gap right now. In like, the scams that are probably just, you know, some bot that's just been running for years. And the really sophisticated modern stuff that you can do, it's, yeah, wow. I guess it's just like driving around on the road. There's, you know, a brand new Mercedes and there's a clapped out 1970s VW Beetle.

Right next to each other. Yeah, they're all still out there. Yeah. It's crazy. fact that new better stuff exists doesn't mean that an old workflow that you know that costs nothing to continue to run right compared to the newer stuff that actually has costs associated with that makes sense and and manages to capture the the lowest hanging of fish you know that's the thing I probably shouldn't have hung up on that call was there really anything to be learned from it

Basically, yeah, they look a little bit like this. They're kind of little like blade machines. So they've got the PlayStation 5SOC, but it's not quite running at the full PlayStation 5 specs. So out of the box it comes with, what is it, 28 rather than 36 CUs and a 6-core CPU rather than 8-core. People are messing around with software unlocks, which sometimes work and sometimes don't. So, spoiler, spoiler for our upcoming video on it, we managed to get ours to the full 40 CUs rather than the 36 on the PS5. I know you guys are doing stuff. I don't know anything about the internal video.

They're so cool. Yeah. We didn't unlock our CPU cores, though, because as you can see, this is not a thick heat sink. No, yeah. So this is designed for, like, to be slotted in all next to each other and have very powerful fans blowing through them. So it's a little tricky to get enough airflow through this thing. So we found that once we were dealing with the additional power of 14 more CUs versus the stock configuration that we had, or 12 more? I can't remember.

It's 28, I think, actually. So, yeah, 12 more Cs. to use, not to mention with certain mods, you can unlock the clock speed. So we had like way more power consumption on ours. So as soon as we put an enclosure on it, even with two Noctua Industrial

fans, it was still kind of struggling a little bit. But I've seen people water cool them. I wonder if people are going to come out with, yeah. Okay, I was just going to say, I wonder people are going to come out with custom coolers. You can mount AIOs to them with brackets and stuff. There are downsides, guys. Don't just buy one of these thinking, okay, this is my new gaming rig. You have to run

Linux. There are certain variants that support it really well. Other variants that support it kind of okay and some that it might be a bit of a hassle to get it working. Cache, Bazite, SteamOS, I've heard. We're all doing okay. I don't know about SteamOS. I know Cashy and Bazite are good. Okay. I literally don't know about SteamOS. It's possible. I don't either. This is all, yeah. But there's also some, like, I encountered. I think I tried to fire up Final Fantasy 7 rebirth, because that was like, in my mind, a great example of something that runs really well in the PlayStation 5, and I wanted to know,

okay, but like, how far off are we, right? Yeah. And it did not work at all. And I did find a Reddit thread where someone got it working a bit, but it clearly still had issues. And it turns out that it's not quite a PS5, guys. Hardware encoding and decoding does not work.

Yeah, video, right? At all. Yeah. That's pretty brutal. Which is, which sucks. It wanted to be a media center box. It's DOA for that. Yeah.

And then additionally, there are some sort of hardware units. I didn't look into it enough, but basically it's an older GPU at this point. And on PC, games are expecting a level of hardware support that either is not fully enabled on this one, or it was done in kind of like a weird janky PlayStation way. So there are some games that even though they like should work and are proton compatible, they don't work on this, at least not right now. So your mileage may vary. It's more of a hobby project than like a,

this is my new daily driver PC. Yeah. But also, if you were willing to accept the compromises, you could have a full PC with 16 gigs of working GDDR6 memory for under $300, all in. So the board shipping, a doorstop grade power supply, and then a modest storage drive. You could be off to the races.

Um, Comcast. is turning millions of its routers into motion detectors. Yeah. That sounds fun and useful for the user.

Comcast launched a home protection platform called Xfinity Shield on August 18th, and the headline feature is Wi-Fi Motion, an opt-in, thank God, setting that uses the Xfinity Gateway and connected devices to detect motion inside the home without cameras or dedicated sensors. The base Wi-Fi Shield tier is free for Xfinity Internet. customers. And a $15 per month, Shield Select Tier adds hardware, AI enhanced monitoring, and access to emergency services. This feels like something we've been talking about forever. We have. And has existed for like corporate deployments forever. For like a decade. But is

actually being used for consumers in a way that maybe makes sense. Well, keep going. The gateway monitors the radio frequency signals between itself and Wi-Fi-connected devices around the home. And when you move through a room, your body interferes with those signals, which the software reads as motion and pushes as an alert in the Xfinity app. Comcast pictures the sensing area as an oval between the gateway and a selected connected device. And sensitivity settings can filter out pets around 40 pounds or less. It works on XB7 and newer gateways, and Comcast says the feature detects motion only without recording video,

capturing images or identifying individuals. It could absolutely identify individuals, but the other ones, by default, is not how it works. The privacy concern comes from Comcast's own support page. You knew we were going to get to the gotcha, right? Oh, for sure. Which, as noted by TechCrunch, says that, subject to applicable law, Comcast may disclose information generated by Wi-Fi motion to third parties without further notice to you.

That covers things like law enforcement investigations, disputes where Comcast is a party and court orders or subpoenas. Opting in effectively creates a timestamped record of when people are moving around your house held by your ISP. And if they have information about the amount of interference caused, they could use that to identify. People, just to be clear. Links has shipped a similar feature in 2021 before discontinuing it, and Wiz and Phillips Hugh sell light bulbs that detect motion the same way. But the research on what these signals can reveal is moving much faster than the product suggests.

Ring cameras are getting a new encryption method. Starting in September, Amazon's ring is making its new throw away the key encryption, aka take, the default for its cameras. So Ring says that it and authorities will have less access to footage.

Ring can briefly use the decryption key to power cloud features such as smart alerts, but then deletes the key, the keys rotate every five minutes, and Ring says that its copies are permanently deleted after 24 hours. After that, the customer and authorized shared users can still view their footage, and Ring says that it no longer has the ability to decrypt it. Take keeps Ring's cloud-based features working, unlike stricter end-to-hand encryption, which Ring also offers. Ring is making it harder for itself, and therefore law enforcement and hackers

to get at your camera footage without completely giving up their cloud features. That is a totally redundant sentence. But babies, and nothing prevents, like a neighbor, for instance, who has a ring camera from authorizing law enforcement

to use their footage, and Ring continues to maintain their partnerships with authorities, which are separate things. However, I would like for more of my devices to be encrypted in, such a way that the manufacturer or anyone else cannot decrypt it.

I have the same thought as Angry Panda PC. I'm assuming they continued this thought from just I don't believe them to the Anchorman meme or he's just like, I don't believe you. Yeah. You're going to delete it in 24 hours? Sure. Do you remember what we saw with law enforcement? What could Ring do?

I don't think they can if they ever have the ability. This is the problem. So what could they do to prove they don't have the ability? They can't in this model because they're saying they do hold it for 24 hours. And that would mean that it could be man in the middle. It could be a rogue person on rings. And we just talked about how police officers were misusing. But the decryption key won't work anymore after that.

Like the keys rotate every five minutes. They're saying that they keep their copies for 24 hours and their copies can be used. I know that it said the five minute rotating thing, but then why would they even keep the copies for three four hours? So where I was going at with this was actually like what level of audit would you be, would you consider acceptable? Because like we actually did a smart doorbell roundup. We recorded it last week, I want to say.

And one of the issues that I had to raise with Ring was their cooperation with law enforcement. And the fact that they seem to be selling things people don't want as features. Like remember that Super Bowl ad that they ran? Oh, yeah. And it really got me thinking because almost every security camera company that we looked at had some controversy or other. Ufi, T.P. Link, ring, like. Yeah, all of them. If I want a video doorbell at all, what that devil am I supposed to do?

You have to basically cook your own. I mean, I think unifies in pretty good shape in terms of intercepted data. I think so. It's just who they sell stuff to. or how well they police who they sell stuff to. Unify? Eupuity? Yeah.

Yeah. I don't think they have my footage. Because I'm reading it directly off my server. I mean, their hardware. Sure. People want them to do a better job of policing who their vendors sell their hardware to. Got it.

Very different kind of scandal. Yes. So it's not that they're entirely without scandal, but I haven't seen... Nothing related to this. I've never seen anything related. Yeah, I haven't seen anything related to this. They've had security issues, but not related to this. just like somebody having access to your video feed, which is like the worst.

Like I had someone ask me the other day. They were over at our house and they were asking about like the security cameras we have inside our house. Like oh, you know, what is that for? And I was like, well, my original intent was like for insurance purposes or whatever. If we get broken into like what was stolen, where did it go? You know, what was it worth? Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.

What we actually use it for more than anything is I've, Yvonne left her purse somewhere. where is it? Or like when was the last time I had my keys with me? But that's, is that purely on, hosted on your stuff? But they asked, are you not uncomfortable with that? And I went, no, I'm good. Because all the footage is on hard drives that I own. Do you access it through a cloud service? I do access it through a cloud service. Is it a cloud service that's hosted by you?

To my knowledge, ubiquity's cloud service has not been breached to this date. Right. But is there any. way, like, does that data flow through their servers? I'm assuming. I'm trying to think how you would access it in that way. Because I don't think they, yeah, it would be, it would be routed through their servers. Yep. So there's still a concern there.

You can disable that, though. Okay. So you can make it so that. That helps a ton. Because if you're like, yeah, I want to turn this option on, that's on you. You can make that decision. Marchable 27 says it's an encrypted link back to your hardware I believe because I know there's two different modes that you can run you can run through direct connect mode and then

you can also run through their like you know proxy or whatever you can run through but if it's but if it's an encryption that is that the keys are only on my DVR or NVR excuse me and my device could be pretty good then theoretically that should be There is a certain layer of like, you know, if it's accessible over the internet at all. Yes. Some amount of security risk. Yeah. Interesting.

Anyway, but yeah, my answer was basically I'm comfortable with it because it's ubiquity. And if it was anyone else, I don't think I would want a camera pointed inside my house. And even then, there's none in the bedrooms. Obviously none in the bathrooms. Like there's certain areas that are just blackout areas. That makes sense. Yeah. especially because you could do any of the automations that you would need to do there with millimeter wave anyway.

You don't need a camera. I finally set up automations in my daughter's room that she's happy with. My family has been driving, well, my family has been driven up the wall by our horrible smart lights. And shout out in a belly. They really created a really great product with their project Linus, red and blue series switches, that we had a small tiff with them over branding it after me without my permission. But boy, have they ever created a great product. So I set it up in my daughter's room so that the switch itself is configured to never turn on.

But I have a home assistant automation that watches the millimeter wave sensor and conditionally can turn it on at different brightness levels, depending on how bright it is in the room already. And then you can create your own sort of like timer-based automations. in the case of the room lights, I've just got it on a timer such that if it doesn't detect a person for, I think I've it set to like 10 minutes

or something like that, then it just kind of turns off on its own. That way, Home Assistant doesn't have to run that automation. It can just run right on the switch. But there's like another just AEOTech smart light in there that doesn't have that level of sophistication in its controller. So I'm just like I'm finally learning this stuff. Allie Express was discreetly tracking users by playing audio, By using the web audio API, AliExpress has been silently measuring sawtooth waves to fingerprint devices. A developer caught the tracking after encountering issues with multi-point Bluetooth headphones while surfing Ali Express.

A little digging around found differences in the device's signal processing were taken advantage of to identify hardware without user knowledge or consent. This isn't a new fingerprinting technique. In fact, it's actually rather dated. browsers have been blocking it for years. Ali Express appears to be using a shotgun approach for tracking, implementing scripts that measure a list of fingerprinting techniques and hoping that some slip through. Why is this necessary?

Should last a long time, too. Maybe you have separately prepped rice. Maybe you have separately prepped some form of carb assuming you want it. But yeah, these SuperCube things are super useful. It's so funny because it's the kind of thing that people totally do for like their pets. You know, like if they're on a raw food diet or whatever, they'll have like a similar type of system with, you know, like pre-prepped baggies and stuff, but then people don't think to do it for themselves. Yeah. That was like you walked in, I was eating lunch today. Yeah.

And that would have been a super cube of ground beef with kale shaped on top of it with half a yam. That was like exactly the thing I just described. It's really easy to throw together. and it makes it so that you can kind of prep at one time and then you don't have this like, what am I going to eat? Oh, God, I have awoken to another day. and your children don't have a father anymore is really great for pushing every other thought out of your mind other than I need to make sure this gear shift is perfect so that I don't spill all my guts out all over the road. Those are both pretty good for me. That makes sense. I bet you, because you said you notice, I bet you that starts to happen after like four days.

Running is super, super. super fucking hard on your knees and it's actually insane to me how many people do it. It can be a lot better if you run in in grass or on some type of soft surface, but running on

cement, running on sidewalk is genuinely really brutal. Roller blade. It's rough. If you're going to be on concrete anyway, throw on inline skates, it's better exercise, you'll cover more ground and it'll be way easier on your knees. Running on a track as well. Most tracks are built to be more springy and spongy. I used to go to to a local track, but it's just quite a drive. So now I run in the grass because I have a soft grass field that's close enough. Battler Gunn says maybe that's why my knees are f***.

There's a pretty good chance. It's a pretty solid chance. Cycling, though, cycling is another option that's low impact. But I knew that I was born into bad knees before I fully developed the badness of my knees. So I started to really chill on anything high impact. I'm relatively young and I'm really glad that I did. Don't do this, but you could go out to a field and lightly punch the grass and then go out to the sidewalk and lightly punch the sidewalk and just observe. Yeah.

For me, I've gone onto this on the show before. I'm not going to go into it. Over COVID period, I got super depressive and actually like mess myself up in some not great ways that I'm somewhat still paying for. figured out that a big part of the reason for that was that I just wasn't partaking in physical activity because the springback was crazy and a lot of it was just getting active again. Getting active again was tough because I was very broken in a bunch of different ways. But just solving that involved being physically active to a certain degree because even like therapeutic movements are still being physically active.

Going for a walk can still be physically active. You might need more time. every day I walk a path for a certain amount of time that gets me minimum 3,500 steps just from walking that path over the course of a week. That adds up a lot. I was streaming one time playing PubG. She spun it up on a computer behind me. I had no idea. Chat started yelling at me that she was playing after like a while. And I turned around and she was playing. And I never took over or anything but tried to add some verbal advice. What she had been doing was she looted one room and then got on like a motorcycle and just drove around. And she was playing solo.

So people didn't want to, my assumption is people didn't want to shoot her to give their position away. Because you're playing solos. So she's just ripping around when she would run out a gas. she would just find another vehicle and you just keep driving around. And she ended up just surviving until the final two. And then she was running around. She ended up in a wheat field and just went prone and just laid there. And then the circle reduced to like exactly where she was.

And the dude just ran straight head on at her. But she's laying down in a wheat field. So she sees him first. No mouse control at all. Just holds left click and it just recoils up to his head. And she chicken dinners with one kill her first PUBG game ever and then just never played again because she's not that interested. She's played one FPS game one time.
