Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome back everybody to another episode of the Weekly Planet, official podcast of comicbookmovie.com where we talk movies, comics, TV shows, not so much TV shows lately, that's okay. Yeah, that's fine. Look, soon a new and shinier TV show will arrive and then we can start watching that there was a teaser this week oh I didn't see it yeah it was
Starting point is 00:00:27 it was one of those things where it was like 30 seconds long and you have to use a proxy and I'm like fuck it I'll just watch I'll just wait
Starting point is 00:00:34 I am looking forward to it but I have to click a thing and it's just not happening and I'm sure it was I've seen one of those weird players yeah oh yeah
Starting point is 00:00:39 yeah anyway my name's James also known as Mr. Sunday with me as always my coast Nick Mason. I'm sick. Oh, yeah?
Starting point is 00:00:46 Yeah, I'm under the weather. Of what? Sickness. Do you have? Sick of bloody filling questions about Batman v Superman. Well, we will be doing a bit of Batman stuff this week, won't we? Yes, we will. Because prior to Batman v Superman coming out,
Starting point is 00:01:01 we talked about the various Superman films. Yes. That come out before that. And now we're going to do some of the Batman films. Not all of them. No. Because you texted me and you're like, oh, let's not do all of them. Yeah, there's a lot.
Starting point is 00:01:15 Yeah. So we're going to break it up into a few weeks. We're going to do the Burton ones first. That's right. It's going to be great. We'll break it up into a few weeks over a few months or years. Is this also because you've lost quite a bit of your enthusiasm for just Batman and or Superman because of last week?
Starting point is 00:01:30 But I feel like it'll be a really... If we did Burton and Schumacher, that's a big episode. That's true. Because they're very different. And I feel like we'd skip towards the end. I'd just be like, and then they were bad. But I want to talk about it a bit more than that. Okay, cool.
Starting point is 00:01:44 Maybe though. Now, this week, April Fool's happened. Oh, is that why that happened just earlier? will be bad but i want to talk about it a bit more than that okay cool yeah maybe though now this week april fools happened oh is that why that happened just earlier which one you came in here and you i came to your house and you're like you want some vegemite on toast which is the most australian thing we've ever done collectively yeah and i'm like sure thing and i put it in my mouth and i'm like there's too much vegemite there's a wildly there's a wildly extravagant amount of vegemite on this. Everybody likes a different amount of Vegemite, all right? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:08 How much do you have? Not enough? Like a thin film. Do you have any butter on it? Yeah. I don't know what you're about. A thin film. I don't know how you...
Starting point is 00:02:17 You speak like a madman. No, I don't. That's not a madman. You can barely even see it. Listen, I eat my weird yeast extract, which is what it is, how I do. And you do whatever wrong way you think you do it.
Starting point is 00:02:31 Could this be the end of the weekly plan? Maybe. Nah, it would have been last week. It was. Yeah, probably. Yeah. We're going to keep going.
Starting point is 00:02:36 That's it. But yeah, so like I said, April 4th happened. So some of these new stories might not be real because I didn't really, I never really look into it. Like about 20 minutes before you come over, I'm like, shit, what happened this week?
Starting point is 00:02:50 And I take some very rushed and hurried notes. One of which, though, you pointed out is the Doctor Strange photos. That is definitely real and not doctored from what I can tell. Doctored Strange did. That's a good one, isn't it? That's a good pun that you did. So it's just It's Benedict Cumberbatch
Starting point is 00:03:06 And Chiwetel Ejiofor Yep Just hanging out on a street Yep Great colours of the costumes Yes I agree Love the collar Uh huh
Starting point is 00:03:14 Is it green enough The Chiwetel Ejiofor Baron Mordo costume Yes it is I think so I think so too Yeah One arm's a different colour
Starting point is 00:03:21 What's going on there What colours are the other arm Different Like One's like One's like Oh one's going on there? What colours are the other arm? Different. One's like... Oh, one's like a darker kind of... Darker. I said that weird. That's probably related to the lore of the character
Starting point is 00:03:32 that I can't remember. Has he got something on his back? Has he got a sword or something? Or a stick? Could be a sword or a stick. Or like a squash racket. Or a telescope. Could be a telescope.
Starting point is 00:03:43 Could be a pizza paddle. He's got his own pizza oven. I'm really looking at pizza paddle like he's got his own you know i'm really looking forward to this what do you think of the eye of agamotto it's not doing much there i'm sure it like glows and stuff yeah like i guess it fits with the aesthetic of like a lunatic yeah lunatic but also like you know like all the a lot of the asgardian stuff oh yeah it's kind of a lot of you know crisscrossing metal grids that's true well we've seen the eye of agamotto before it's in thor yeah might have been a replica or whatever they threw a lot of stuff in that in that yeah just to see what's stuck i think yeah and most people like it's pretty cool yeah do you think that collar's high enough or do you think it should be higher i think it'll get higher when he does magic when he does magic yeah
Starting point is 00:04:22 i'm hoping it does. And it'll flap in the breeze. Yeah. Yeah, okay. Good, good, good. But I think you couldn't have it that high. Because sometimes it's like above his head. That's true, yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:33 You couldn't have it all the time. No, exactly. It needs to be below eye height in a real world scenario, which this definitely is. In a real magical world scenario. Yeah. Otherwise, you'd be hit by all these cars. They're just standing out on the street. I don't know what's going on there.
Starting point is 00:04:44 Do you think that's part of the plot or do you think this is just... I think they're probably just in... Do you think they're just on their way to get coffee? I don't know. Because it looks like they could be hanging out and they're obviously enemies, but they don't start as enemies.
Starting point is 00:04:57 Do you think it'll be the classic Marvel trope of you're friends with your enemy until they go crazy for no reason? No, I think he's got... Oh, that's actually a really good question. i was i was initially gonna actually you know what i don't know because because in their initial appearance like baron morto's like i'm gonna i'm gonna put spells on you so you can't tell tell the ancient one that i'm evil i'm gonna do all this and then then he finally breaks out of the spells yeah or the ancient one that I'm evil, I'm going to do all this, and then he finally breaks out of the spells. Yeah. Or the ancient one was like, I knew there were spells.
Starting point is 00:05:27 Yeah. I didn't do nothing. I'm good at all this. I'm ancient and I'm unknowable. I'm the bloody one, yeah. I can be a dick to anyone because I'm ancient and unknowable. Because Chiwetel Ejiofor doesn't strike me as that kind of, like they wouldn't cast him as that version of the character.
Starting point is 00:05:41 Right, right, like a straight evil. Yeah, like it seems. He'd have layers of complexity. Yeah, I think to me... Like Serenity. Yeah. Like he's in Serenity. I feel he looks to me like, yeah, like you said, maybe they're...
Starting point is 00:05:52 He's like, I'm wise and I'm going to teach you... They're mates for a bit, then they fight. Yeah. Then they fight. Yeah, then they fight. Yeah. Great. So he's got to kind of take him under his wing.
Starting point is 00:06:02 Yeah. And then they think maybe the evil will be revealed slowly. Yes. Or he's completely normal for most of the movie. Then he goes insane at the end. Yeah. Right? I'm banking on that one.
Starting point is 00:06:14 Looking forward to it. Scott Derrickson, director. Yeah. Yeah, I'm looking forward to a different side of the Marvel Universe kind of opening up. Doctor Strange's belt is made out of curtain pulls. Looks like eight belts. He's got a lot of belts, doesn't he? Well, you know, it's a very flowy cloak.
Starting point is 00:06:28 Isn't it though? Yeah. Yeah. All right. Looks good. It does look good. Did you hear that Robin Wright has joined Blade Runner 2? No.
Starting point is 00:06:37 Which is exciting. Well, she has. Oh. Which is exciting. I'm not sure in what capacity. I'm fairly sure Sean Young, is that her name? Correct. She won't be coming back because she's in the first one, obviously.
Starting point is 00:06:49 Well, that answers that question. That's right. We'll talk about her a bit later when we talk about the Burton films because she crops up a bit even though she's not in those movies. But, yeah, maybe she's playing that character. Yeah, okay. I mean, maybe. Who knows?
Starting point is 00:07:02 But she's an android, isn't she? I mean, a replicant Sean Young no she is definitively is in all versions correct and depending on
Starting point is 00:07:10 what version you've seen and what the director Harrison Ford says sometimes Deckard's a replicant sometimes he's not
Starting point is 00:07:17 correct I think he will be sometimes Sean Young's character has a preset self-destruct time. Right.
Starting point is 00:07:25 Sometimes she doesn't. Okay. Yeah, yeah, sure. I can never remember what versions I've seen. I can't get that movie straight, man. The director's cut has no... Narration. Correct.
Starting point is 00:07:36 Yeah. The director's cut is definitively better, isn't it? That's what they've said. See, again, I think I've mentioned this on the show. I had to do it for English class in high school so all the fun is gone for me.
Starting point is 00:07:48 Yeah. So. I did Australian class like a patriot. I bet you did. Dave Bautista has also hinted that he's in the movie
Starting point is 00:07:56 because he took like a photo on Instagram and Twitter where he's got one of that like a little paper unicorn-y thing.
Starting point is 00:08:01 So that's a good show. I like that guy. He's popping up in stuff. Yeah, okay, great. He was one of the best parts of that. He could be a real big replicant. He definitely could be. I didn't even think of that.
Starting point is 00:08:11 Or a regular-sized replicant, and they could just film him from very far away. Yes. You've got two options, don't you? Mm-hmm. Yeah, he was one of the best parts of that new Bond movie. That's true. And that didn't say much.
Starting point is 00:08:22 And he had metal thumbnails. Yeah, inexplicable metal thumbnails. Did he have bionic hands? We'll never know. He got choked and dragged out of trade or something. Yeah, he did.
Starting point is 00:08:31 Yeah, yeah. He was like the Jaws kind of character. But no, look, I'm excited to see what they do with this property and it'd be interesting to see whether it
Starting point is 00:08:40 kind of goes the way like Prometheus did where it's all flashy and looks good but then people are ultimately disappointed or it'll be the best movie and looks good, but then people are ultimately disappointed. Or it'll be the best movie of all time. And people will ultimately be disappointed.
Starting point is 00:08:49 That's right. Because you can't win. There's no way. You really can't. We're headed into new Ghostbusters territory, new Aliens territory. Yes. No one will ever be happy. Shane Black's doing the new Predator movie that they reckon is going to be a follow-up
Starting point is 00:09:01 to the original, and Arnold's going to be in it. Oh. So that's pretty cool. Oh. Yeah. Dutch, I think Dutch was going to be in, they tried to the original and like arnold's going to be in it oh so that's pretty cool yeah dutch um i think dutch was going to be in they tried to get him for alien versus predator the first one like he was going to show up at the end of being like get to the chopper it's me dutch you remember the end there was a battle in the ice yeah i remember that and then honor was bestowed or something yeah i remember that it was great well that's the thing because like there's been they they always try to shoehorn in an arnold schwarzenegger-esque yes dutch dutch character like if you've played
Starting point is 00:09:29 the alien v predator arcade game and i have there's a there's a space marine who is dutch but he's got a big bionic arm yeah yeah and there's a there's a dark horse series i think it's called predator concrete jungle yeah where it's similar to predator 2 where you know it's real hot in the city and then uh predator arrives yeah and the main human character is like dutch's brother okay who is exactly the same as he's essentially his twin brother except he's a cop why not just make it dutch i'm throwing my hands up in I don't know. I don't know why. What's his name? Hutch.
Starting point is 00:10:08 No, I don't know. I'll look it up for you. I'll look it up in a sec. We'll continue with this. You don't have to. No, I'm going to. Everybody knows the best Predator comic is Batman versus Predator. The first one.
Starting point is 00:10:16 Which is incredible. Yes. Yeah. That is the best one. Then again, I haven't read many Predator comics. There's a new one at the moment which I've downloaded, which I've yet to read. Is it Archie versus Predator? No, it's not.
Starting point is 00:10:24 Because that's real. Yeah. Is it good? I only Predator? No, it's not. Because that's real. Yeah. Is it good? I only read the first one, but it is pretty good. Okay. Well, while you're looking that up... All credit to any time Archie crosses over with anybody else weird, like the Punisher. Like the Punisher, yeah.
Starting point is 00:10:35 They maintain the characters. Yes. Nobody ever acts out of character. Yep. It's amazing. Good. So while you're looking that up, there's a new Mutants movie. I'll have heaps of time to look this up, clearly.
Starting point is 00:10:49 And it's directed by the guy who did The Fault in Our Stars or something. Okay, sure. Which I haven't seen. But apparently they make out in Anne Frank's house and then everybody claps, which I think is a bit on the nose. You would. And apparently Macy Williams from Game of Thrones, who plays the little Arya Stark
Starting point is 00:11:06 she's going to be Wolfbane Anya Taylor-Joy will be Magic Sunspot's going to appear in it and a few other X-Men Sunspot was actually
Starting point is 00:11:15 in Days of Future Past but I'm guessing they're going to have to cast a younger actor for that they rebooted the universe who cares do anything you want
Starting point is 00:11:22 it doesn't matter well they've recast Angel and it's all you you know, whatever. And Alexandra Shipp's Storm, who's in the upcoming Apocalypse, and James McAvoy's Professor X will apparently also feature. Nah, recast them. Do another one. Who cares?
Starting point is 00:11:35 Parallel universe. Doesn't matter. Do whatever you want. I'm guessing this will take place after Apocalypse, so maybe in the 80s or early 90s. But, yeah, so it's all younger team of mutants and fun and good times. Okay. Actually, last week I was kind of like,
Starting point is 00:11:52 oh, I'm so sick of bloody X-Men trailer. But you know what? It'll be good. I think I was just tired. Well, I don't know. It'll be good. It could be terrible. But I'm looking forward to it.
Starting point is 00:12:02 Yeah, I'd like to see an X-Men movie. See, because we got Deadpool, which was fun and super violent it would be nice to see an x-men movie that is fun and the world isn't at stake maybe just they're just having an x-men mission like a teen drama like a teen drama yeah uh the okay so nyc detective schaefer the brother of major dutch schaefer he's just he's named major schaefer no it's detect it says detective schaefer, the brother of Major Dutch Schaefer. His name's Major Schaefer. No, it says Detective Schaefer. Doesn't have his first name here. It's just Dutch. It's probably just Dutch.
Starting point is 00:12:32 Oh, dear. So it's worth a read, though? I'll take that as a maybe. Okay, sure. It's been a long time. That came in in 1989. Sure, yeah. Oh, it's before Predator 2, then.
Starting point is 00:12:44 Yeah. Okay, there you go. So Doug Liman also, he was the director on The Gambit Project who took over after I think Rupert Wyatt was doing it before him. I might be wrong. He took over from whoever was doing it before him. He's also left Gambit. Okay.
Starting point is 00:12:59 Which means production on this movie will be pushed back at the earliest, the end of this of this year 2016 which is this year and there's a lot of talk just going this movie apparently has got like a 200 million dollar budget for like a gambit heist movie with channing tatum and then you take him still in well yeah apparently he's like one of the only ones in because they had to they're gonna have to recast everybody else because or everyone's going on to different projects. Oh, right. But he's got that lip sync battle show coming up. So maybe he's out pretty soon. He might be.
Starting point is 00:13:30 But, yeah, he's – yeah, so I think the reasoning behind this, it's rumoured, is that Deadpool was made for like $58 million or whatever and did like crazy well, like highest rated R movie, comedy, whatever, R movie of all time. And it just got stronger, you know, it was really strong week after week and, you know, people really responded. And I think they went, oh, we don't need Channing Tatum and a $200 million Gambit movie to kind of spin things off from the X-Men or just use Deadpool and the existing X-Men.
Starting point is 00:14:00 Oh, sure, yeah. Why are we sinking $200 million into this? I mean, he talks funny. It's so weird. That is kind of weird. Don't like weird i like it yeah so he's gonna have to hang up that weird sock mask yeah potentially forever yeah i maybe they should try and like work him into an x-men movie and then spin him off maybe i don't know yeah that's are you interested in again straight it out yeah yeah yeah but that that being said he was in X-Men Origins Wolverine for five minutes. Yes.
Starting point is 00:14:27 Nobody really cares about... What's the audience for it? I mean, he doesn't have the ferocious fan base that Deadpool does. No. Or Wolverine, for that matter. And I think that's what they were looking for. And then they accidentally found it. Because I don't think Fox...
Starting point is 00:14:40 Well, Fox didn't even want to make Deadpool. That's true. And then it's done better than... I think it's the highest grossing X-Men movie. Or one of. It might be. Yeah. Even though it's not really an X-Men movie. They're sent in the same universe. So, who knows where they're going to go with this. Probably somewhere dumb.
Starting point is 00:14:55 Alright, what else are we doing? Nah, it'll be good. Or not. I don't know. So, Goosebumps director Rob Letterman. Did you see Goosebumps? No. Apparently it's good. So I'm going to have to check it out. But again, I never really read the Goosebumps books as aman. Did you see Goosebumps? No. Apparently it's good. So I'm going to have to check it out. But again, I never really read the Goosebumps books as a kid. Because you were too scared.
Starting point is 00:15:10 Yeah. It said, read it, beware, you're in for a scare. And you went, no, thank you. No, thank you. You would have been maybe slightly too old for that. Is that right? Because they were focused at younger kids. Yeah, probably.
Starting point is 00:15:23 That's a good excuse that I'm going to use. You weren't scared. No, I wasn't scared. You were too mature. Too mature for Yeah, probably. That's a good excuse that I'm going to use. You weren't scared. No, I wasn't scared. You were too mature. Too mature for them, yeah. No, but also, wasn't the movie all about, like, well, if you know the Goosebumps books, you know how to defeat all the monsters. Yes, and that sounds terrible.
Starting point is 00:15:36 Yeah. But apparently they worked the lore in well without kind of beating you over the head with it. Okay. So, yeah, anyway, he's going to be doing the Dungeons and Dragons movie. Yes, another one. The one about this, yeah. Another another one how do you think that'll go poorly you reckon yes i think it depends on warcraft uh-huh when i say that if warcraft does really well maybe there's room
Starting point is 00:15:57 maybe there's room for another people like oh but maybe there's no room for another one exactly or warcraft does really poorly and then then this one may make a good one. And I know they're not the same universe but it's all magic and bloody and mythical creatures and I'm going to say goblins.
Starting point is 00:16:13 There's goblins. You are correct. Say another mythical creature I'll tell you if it's in Dungeons and Dragons. A jack-o'-lantern. Look, I can't rule it out. The big thing with the eye.
Starting point is 00:16:22 The ball with the eye. Yeah, the beholder. Yeah, that's in there. I know it. Yeah, that's right. We should watch that one again. Close to when this movie comes out. The big thing with the eye. The ball with the eye. Yeah, the beholder. Yeah, that's in there. I know it. Yeah, that's right. We should watch that one again. Close to when this movie comes out, we should do a commentary on the first day. Okay, great.
Starting point is 00:16:31 It's got bloody Jeremy Irons. Yes, that's true. It does. It's got one of the Jimmy Olsons. It's got one of the Wayanses. Yes, it's got Thora Birch. He does have Thora Birch. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:40 It's got a guy with snakes coming out of his ears. Really bad. Yeah, it's really bad. I think there's a second one which is just kind of boring. Yeah, I would really bad. I think this is the second one, which is just kind of boring. Yeah, I would say that. So which way are they going to go with this? Bad or boring? No, they're the only two options.
Starting point is 00:16:51 I think they're going to take it like... I think they're going to do it like Lord of the Rings style, I'd imagine. Apparently they're eyeing a Vin Diesel type for the lead. Beholder eyeing? Maybe, potentially. Yeah, turn him to stone. And they say eyeing a Vin Diesel type. It's interesting they didn't say they're looking at Vin Diesel
Starting point is 00:17:06 because he's a big Dungeons & Dragons fan. But I wouldn't say that he's a draw. Yeah. Like, I like him. He's good in the Fast and Furious movies, but he had a movie last year where he hunted witches. The Last Witch Hunter? Yeah, that's probably it.
Starting point is 00:17:22 Were you going to do a funny title answer there? I didn't have one, so I'm glad you jumped in. Okay, cool. But he... Like, apparently he's fine in it, but that didn't do very well. Okay. And, like, he's returning to Xander Cage and... Yeah, see, he is...
Starting point is 00:17:36 There's probably another Riddick coming. Yeah, he's a draw, but he's not a draw... Like, he's a draw for people who want to watch Fast and Furious movies and movies where he's a super cool spy. Yeah. But is he a draw? Is he going to take that audience to a movie about goblins and jack-o'-lanterns?
Starting point is 00:17:53 You know what I mean? I'm going to say no. No, exactly. And I like him, but I think even him in that world doesn't even make sense. Because he's like a dude from the Bronx. I don't know where he's from, but you know what I mean? He's probably Canadian.
Starting point is 00:18:05 He's probably Canadian. But do you know what I mean? Like, he's like a dude from the Bronx. I don't know where he's from, but do you know what I mean? He's probably Canadian. He's probably Canadian. But do you know what I mean? He's kind of like... Yeah, he could be a barbarian. Yeah, with an American accent. Yeah, but you can't really build a Dungeons... In my opinion, you can't really build a Dungeons & Dragons movie around a barbarian because there's so much other...
Starting point is 00:18:19 There's so much more magic and insanity around it. What you need, you need to take a kid from modern day New York or 90s New York and transport him into the realm of Dungeons & Dragons. It's worked before and it will never work again. Yeah, maybe they're saying they're eyeing, maybe this is like an elaborate like reverse psychology thing where they're like we're eyeing a Vin Diesel type and they get that out there and Vin Diesel gets in his head
Starting point is 00:18:44 like why haven't they asked me and then he just shows up and he's like it's me, Vin Diesel. I'm a Vin Diesel type and they get that out there and Vin Diesel gets in his head like, why haven't they asked me? And then he just shows up and he's like, it's me, Vin Diesel. I'm a Vin Diesel type. I'll do it for free. Yeah, maybe. So do you think maybe you put him as like, like he's in Guardians. Yep. Like, well, he has like one line in Guardians.
Starting point is 00:18:58 Oh, yeah. Where like you put him as a supporting character. Like you said, maybe you don't put him. He could be some sort of clockwork man. Yes. Is there clockwork men's in Dungeons & Dragons? Yeah, there's all kinds
Starting point is 00:19:08 of clockwork men's. How do you wind them up? I think it's magic. It's not really clockwork, is it? No, it's more magic work. Yeah. Okay.
Starting point is 00:19:17 Anyway, see what this happens. Maybe he could be the voice of the Beholder. Yes. Maybe he could be a golem. A golem. Good stuff. Do you play some Dungeons & Dragons? I used to back in the day. I went on the Sanspence thing, yes maybe he would be a golem a golem good stuff
Starting point is 00:19:25 do you play some Dungeons and Dragons I used to back in the day I went on the Sand Spence thing the um what was it the Dungeons and Dragons yeah it is it was really good
Starting point is 00:19:32 it was fun I've never done it before yeah I will not like I haven't played I know some friends who play and so from time to time
Starting point is 00:19:41 I will show up as like a non-player character and ruin it yeah and ruin it they don't even invite me I just show up as like a non-player character. And ruin it? Yeah, and ruin it. They don't even invite me. I just show up. I choose machine gun. Can you do that?
Starting point is 00:19:49 Yeah, that's right. I'm in the FBI. You're all under arrest. That's what I say. It's great. Yeah. It's like the end of Holy Grail. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:58 No, I basically, I'm just like the dungeon master who runs it. I'll show up and he'll hand me like a card with my character on it. And I'm like, and he'll just be like, just run with it. And I'm like, yeah. So you're the dungeon master? No, he's the dungeon master. Oh, okay. I show up and he'll hand me like a card with my character on it. And I'm like, and he'll just be like, just run with it. And I'm like, yeah.
Starting point is 00:20:06 So you're the dungeon master? No, he's the dungeon master. Oh, okay. I was going to say. Yeah, yeah. Didn't you say you used to dungeon master? From time to time, sure. It seems hard, man.
Starting point is 00:20:12 I don't know how people do that. Yeah. Especially when everybody's trying to derail them. Like that seems the idea. It's, it's like, it's like chess, except everybody's just a much worse person.
Starting point is 00:20:26 And everybody's drunk most of the time, if I'm honest with you. Okay. Ewan McGregor was interviewed this week. Oh, yes. Is this an April Fool's thing? Wasn't there some sort of Star Wars April Fool's related? Yeah, IGN did a Darth Maul. Oh, it's footage.
Starting point is 00:20:40 Oh, okay. Oh, Darth Maul's in Episode 8. No, no. He was going to get a Netflix series. And if you watch like two seconds of that yeah it's clearly
Starting point is 00:20:47 like it's well done but like it's I wouldn't even I'd say like there's fan films that are better made do you know what I mean and
Starting point is 00:20:55 who cares like I'm fucking April Fool's on the internet it's the worst I put up I put up a Force Awakens video
Starting point is 00:21:03 really short because I was away so I couldn't I didn't have any of my recording stuff so I re-edited a very pivotal hand solo moment which i won't spoil even though everybody has probably seen it and a lot of people like is this april fools i'm like no it's just a video it's just a video i made it just happens to come out on april 1st it's not april fools or it is i don't know maybe that's why you're not spoiling it, because it's April Fools. Maybe, yeah.
Starting point is 00:21:29 Anyway, Ewan McGregor says that he was asked, have you spoken to Disney about appearing in an Obi-Wan movie or starring in an Obi-Wan movie? Right. Oh, man. Because, you know, as we know, he did make an appearance in The Force Awakens. His voice can be heard in that. They call it a force
Starting point is 00:21:45 back sequence who calls it that the people at star wars the good people at star wars george lucas probably even though he's gone he's he's done hanging out in food courts that's right so yeah ewan mcgregor lent his voice and that was like two or three weeks before the movie came out and they said oh yeah, like I said, are you interested in doing an Obi-Wan movie? And he said, I can't really talk about it. He goes, I can't, you know, confirm that I've spoken to anybody. Basically saying that he's at least gone in to, you know,
Starting point is 00:22:15 talk about an Obi-Wan Solo movie. But he did say that regardless, like, he's super keen for it to happen, which would be really cool. And as we know, there's like that 20-year period between Revenge of the Sith and Return of the... and A New Hope. What happened in the middle there? Desert stuff.
Starting point is 00:22:31 Desert stuff. There's a great... There's a couple of comics that kind of look at that and they follow Obi-Wan during that time. There's like one of a... There's a drought and like some huts are like... Is it action-packed or is it mopey? It seems mopey.
Starting point is 00:22:41 No, it's good. I mean, it's short, but it's good. It's really, really good. And he's one of the things from the prequels that everybody like universally agrees is good. That's true. And wants to see more of. Everybody else is just like, no thank you.
Starting point is 00:22:51 Is he founder of the first moisture farms? Is that how he fixes the drought? Uncle Owen already had the moisture farm. No, I didn't fix the drought, but they're hitting up like farmers for water. And like he's in town and he sees like people getting shaken down and you think he's gonna like for water just wrung out that's what it's that's the term if you're shaking down for water you're wrung out
Starting point is 00:23:12 and he you think and he's walking through and you think he's gonna do something and then he just walks past oh and but you also find out later that he's also protecting um like the owens farm okay like he's not getting close but like whenever the pirates or whatever come near sand pirates i don't know sure they're called but yeah he'll like step in and mind wipe them and then they'll they'll disappear oh it's great it's only short i think it's star wars issue eight and there's another one after that i can't remember but anyway yes make a bloody obi-wan movie i don't want to see a han solo origin movie even though we're getting one
Starting point is 00:23:45 I'm sure it'll be fine but man make that movie what do you think yeah you'd like to see movies I would like to see that April Fool's no I wouldn't
Starting point is 00:23:53 double April Fool's yeah I would DC Rebirth is a big thing this week uh huh we got a letter about it okay let's hear it somebody says
Starting point is 00:24:02 what do you think about DC Rebirth we'll do it at the end okay cool so hang around for that if you want or just skip to it it's in this I have many opinions on it we've got a letter about it. Okay, let's hear it. Somebody says, what do you think about DC Rebirth? We'll do it at the end. Okay, cool. So hang around for that if you want, or just skip to it. It's in this one. I have many opinions on it. April Fool's or do I?
Starting point is 00:24:12 April Fool's. Here's the thing that's probably not in April Fool's. That being said, it might be in April Fool's. Suicide Squad is apparently going to get some reshoots. I heard about that. Now, movies getting reshoots or pickups, it depends. Look at Mr. Hollywood over here. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:24:31 It depends how they frame it. Movies go back and reshoot or pick up all the time. It's not uncommon. Sometimes it is to fix a movie, but often it's like- James is recording this from the Chateau Marmont. That's hollywood he is right now he's not even in the room that's where he is that's it but you know it might be to get you know shots that you know didn't quite didn't work out or whatever or just you know flesh out sequences and or maybe the last movie you made was real bad yeah maybe the last and you want to make this this movie as little
Starting point is 00:25:01 like that movie as possible that's right right, exactly. Who's to say? But the thing is, apparently they're already taking place, or they're about to. And people are saying, well, this is a response to Batman, Superman not doing well because apparently they're going back in and they're going to flesh out some of the character stuff and there's going to be kind of more fun and a lighter tone. But the thing is, for these reshoots to take place, this would have had to have been planned months ago.
Starting point is 00:25:25 Okay. Batman Superman didn't come out last weekend and then they went shit and then they managed to get all the actors back together and book studio space and locations and whatever and rewrite everything. Clear them out of the Chateau Marmont. That's right, exactly.
Starting point is 00:25:39 Because I'm using it. That's right. So I think the response to this is probably a couple of things. One, Deadpool. Yep, okay. Because Deadpool is irreverent and funny and he's bloody winking at the camera or whatever. And two, that the rumor is that every joke, this is courtesy of birth, death movies, every joke from the movie is in that last trailer.
Starting point is 00:26:00 Right, okay, sure. And that's a fantastic trailer as well. Yeah. Yeah. But if you can, I hate it when you can watch a movie and count down to all the jokes in it. Yeah, exactly. Like, okay, there's three more
Starting point is 00:26:11 and one will be here and here. That's exactly it. But also, to me, it would say that they knew Batman v Superman wasn't going to be very good months ago. We talked about that. There was rumours
Starting point is 00:26:21 they weren't happy with Snyder's vision and were going to get rid of him and whatever, which we can talk about also in a minute, Mason. Oh, yes. But, yeah, look, I'm sure that also played a part. But I think if audiences on that second trailer go in expecting... A funny movie all the way.
Starting point is 00:26:36 Well, not even funny, but just like some kind of lightness. Like you don't need gags. Then I think people would be annoyed. Unless it's like an amazing movie, then, you know, maybe they'll be less annoyed. But I don't know, I then i think people would be annoyed unless it's like an amazing movie then you know maybe they'll be less annoyed but i don't know i'm really looking forward to it if they want to add a little little bit of you know a little bit more jai courtney who am i to complain that's right though he's really good that trailer yeah are you for it or you're against it for it yeah i'm looking forward to that joker car chase oh yeah right with the the batman in the suite
Starting point is 00:27:03 and then batman kills him at the end oh yeah just straight up snaps his neck or whatever yeah whatever he's gonna do do you think probably fill the whole car with hand grenades do you think it'll be set uh after batman v superman no i think it's set oh you think that sequence with the joker and batman is set before i think that's set before batman v superman right right but we'll see. We will see, won't we? When we see it. When we see the movie, yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:27:27 Man, I hope it's good. I feel like it's going to be good. I can't wait for all the Joker's costume changes. Yeah, you love that, don't you? I do, yeah. What did you say? He's like a lounge singer? He's like a, yeah, he's like a Las Vegas lounge singer with all these little, little
Starting point is 00:27:39 outfits. Pretty good. Yeah. But speaking of Batman, Superman, it had a really amazing opening weekend. That's true. It was like the 10th strongest opening of all time. But then... But then it kept getting stronger.
Starting point is 00:27:53 Oh, did it? And by stronger, I mean much worse. Oh, because I heard there was a 50% drop-off or something? Well, apparently it could be as high as 70% drop-off in its second week. Now, that's not uncommon. Like the last Harry Potter had a massive 70% drop-off drop off i think probably hunger games did it i don't know but it's not super uncommon especially when you open so big that's true of course you're gonna where else can you go you run out of people exactly so they think it's expected to make about 50 million
Starting point is 00:28:18 in the u.s in its second week after it made whatever it was 170 whatever in its first week so the the the thinking is this movie is not going to have legs like nobody there's nothing opening this week there's there's god's not dead 2 and meet the blacks i don't know what any of those things are i didn't even say you never will i know i didn't even say god's not Dead 1. You didn't? No. It's a classic. I'll lend you the Blu-ray. So nothing was opening. Yeah. So because everyone thought, well, you can't open something up to black men. Is Meet the Blacks a Meet the Fockers spoof?
Starting point is 00:28:53 No, it's a Purge goof spoof movie with Mike Epps. It's a Purge goof spoof. Purge goof spoof. Yes, with Mike Epps. That's all I know about it. I mean, that's probably too much that I know. I mean, Netflix doesn't even have a category for Purge Goof Spoof, so it's standing on its own.
Starting point is 00:29:14 And God's Not Dead 2 is Melissa Joan Hart from Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, says something about Jesus being, she mentions Jesus in the classroom and then the state takes her to court for bringing up Jesus in the classroom. I don't know. Huh. Yeah. So that sounds really good.
Starting point is 00:29:32 Sounds great. Sounds very good. So basically it's going to earn 50, about they reckon, and who knows, about 50 million US in its second week. Deadpool made 56 million in its second week. Granted, Deadpool didn't have as big an opening initially. But I think what's happened here is, which often happens with movies, the first weekend is pure marketing and hype and people wanting to go in and see it.
Starting point is 00:29:54 Correct. Second weekend is word of mouth. That's true, yeah. And I think the bad reviews and kind of, you know, the mixed reaction. The haters. The haters. The Marvel fanboys who want nothing more than to watch a bad DC film and spread the word.
Starting point is 00:30:09 That's it. Even though it is very good, they'll just lie because they're biased. That's it. And look, we talked about it last week. It's by no means a perfect movie. Or a good movie. Thank you for coming back, even though we gave it a severe kicking. But the thing is, and we were talking about this before the show, i just want these to be good yeah i just want them to be good and we don't have
Starting point is 00:30:30 to settle for this we're not we don't have a an allegiance to one of the big two we don't have a particular allegiance to either of the multi-billion dollar corporations producing product we don't we don't we're really old we don't care anymore no that's i just want a good movie yeah i've been i've been watching bloody i've been reading uh batman teaming up with superman for like 25 years yeah i would really like to see that on screen good yeah absolutely but it hasn't it wasn't no so unfortunately not for some people it was though yeah i guess so i i guess this is just going to kind of peter out i mean it'll probably i think it's about 500 million worldwide so i think it will it'll eventually
Starting point is 00:31:10 crack a billion it'll make its money back yeah but well that's the thing because they reckon it has to make at least a billion to make its money back wow with like marketing maybe yeah i think it was i heard somewhere was about 800 million in total including marketing and whatever i don't know whether that's true. But yeah, I don't think Warner Brothers would be happy with how this performs, considering Star Wars knocked it out of the park, box office-wise, and then kind of stayed strong. And Star Wars made a billion quicker than any movie ever or something.
Starting point is 00:31:40 And if this was good, universally praised, then this would have done the same thing. Would it though? I think so. Because like- If somebody says to you during the week, hey, should I go see Batman Superman? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:52 What would you say to them? No. Yes, that's what I said. I said- Well, maybe I'd say yes. And as they were buying their ticket and going in, I'd be like, April Fools. That's right.
Starting point is 00:32:04 Like depending on the person, like I've got people who are fans of Batman, I'm like, well, you know, I'd be like, April Fools. That's right. Like, depending on the person, like, I've got people who are fans of Batman, I'm like, well, or Superman, I'm like, well, yeah, you should obviously see it. But I wouldn't recommend it to, like, my friends who kind of don't like this stuff. Yeah. Or are indifferent to it. But I feel even if it was universally praised, the audience for Star Wars is so much bigger because there's so many people, like, Star Wars is ingrained into your brain
Starting point is 00:32:25 from the moment you're born to the moment you die. Yeah. And everybody's like, oh, I love Star Wars. I'm a big Star Wars fan. I'm just, you can't predict. I'm so random. You can't predict what I'll do. I love Star Wars.
Starting point is 00:32:36 You'd think I'm a cool guy, but I'm a real nerd and I love Star Wars. You know what I mean? I know what you mean. Yeah, yeah. But it's just everybody. Yeah. That's that inbuilt fan base of everybody in the world.
Starting point is 00:32:46 Yeah, yeah. You can't say the same for Batman or Superman, I don't think. I don't know, man. I think it's universal. I mean, look at the Burton films and the bloody Dark Knight movies made money. The Reeves film made money. But I also think people are like, well, I've had enough Batman films for my lifetime kind of thing.
Starting point is 00:33:01 Like, you're civilian. You're man on the street. It's probably just like, oh, I've had plenty ofman movies this is a batman movie where his parents are killed and then he swears revenge oh well then i've seen it i don't know i i feel like people still are very interested in batman and and agree to disagree is this the end of the weekly it's not so that's two strikes though that's right don't's trying to wear out we have and we have very differing opinions on the burden films that's true oh we're gonna have a whole bunch of strikes in a row this is gonna be great so justice league starts shooting soon uh jesse eisenberg is
Starting point is 00:33:36 apparently not coming back for part one at least um i think that's probably just i went well we'll just use a different villain that's not because everybody hated him. It was some weird choices there, wasn't it? They were probably like, we'll assume everyone hates him again. You know, it's kind of weird as well. Leading up to Batman and Superman, there was a lot of talk from the people behind the scenes that, oh, this is a very smart and very different comic book movie. We're not sure audiences will respond because it's so clever. And then after it comes out, Warner Brothers release a statement like,
Starting point is 00:34:05 oh, we still had a massive opening weekend. We just, who cares what critics think? Don't worry about it. It's just a fun time. After they've been like, this is the smartest movie you'll ever see. You know? So, you know, whatever. Just make a good one.
Starting point is 00:34:19 How about that? All right. What are we doing? Let's never speak of it again. Do you reckon Zack Snyder will... Be pushed in front of a bus, maybe? No, do you reckon they'll kick him off Justice League? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:34:31 Because it starts shooting very soon. You did mention that billion dollar figure. Yeah. A billion dollars is a lot of money not to make back. You know what I mean? If I loan somebody a billion dollars, they're like, I can give you back some of it. I'd be like, well...
Starting point is 00:34:44 I think it will make be like well i think i think it will make more money i think it will make money certainly on home video yes that's right well yeah exactly it that's exactly right because they were doing the director's cut or the extended cut which is going to be even more extreme i tell you what he's going to hit him with several sinks i am looking for spoiler alert six yeah uh no i am looking forward to that though we'll talk about it won't we when we see it in july when it comes i get the sense it's going to be more it's going to just be more jars of piss yeah more jars of piss but more just like when somebody lands a punch just to spray a blood where there wasn't a spray of blood before apparently there's more fleshing out of
Starting point is 00:35:19 like certain ideas like whole characters are omitted that are put back in like jenna malone's in it rumored to be Barbara Gordon. There's that scene that was released this week. Did you see where? Just called Communion. Yes. It was released on YouTube. Which was cool.
Starting point is 00:35:32 But like a lot of that movie, it doesn't feel like it's connected. Like all the scenes are kind of disconnected. Yeah, you're like where would they put, they could put it anywhere potentially. A lot of people are like, did that happen before? I guess it happened after Doomsday. After Doomsday, yeah, yeah. He released Doomsday and then he got in the muck.
Starting point is 00:35:46 He did. Yeah. That being said, what an amazing movie. Yeah, it's pretty good, isn't it? Let's talk about other amazing movies. Everyone should see it. April Fools. Let's talk about other...
Starting point is 00:35:55 Actually, if you're going to go see it again this weekend, hit us up on Twitter, hashtag Weekly Planet Pod. I want to know if people are like... I'm going to see it again. I'm going to make this billion dollars back. Are you going to see it again. I'm going to make this billion dollars back. Are you going to see it again? No. Okay, fair enough.
Starting point is 00:36:09 All right. I kind of want to just for like the car chase. Yeah, I do. I think I will see it again, yeah. Maybe you'll love it second time. I don't think so. Maybe. All right.
Starting point is 00:36:18 The Tim Burton Batman films. They're movies, aren't they? They sure are. Two movies. Two great, perfect movies. Good. Flawless. See you next week folks you're a
Starting point is 00:36:30 you're a big fan of the Burton movies I'm a big fan of the Burton movies I know they're not perfect but I think they are they're pretty great I mean they're the first
Starting point is 00:36:39 movie the first movie ever made but also when I was a kid I would watch the 1960s batman tv series it was on at like 4 30 in the afternoon you'd come home from school and you'd watch it and it was always there was always a two-part cliffhanger yeah uh and and i was like uh and i always even
Starting point is 00:36:54 as a little kid i'm like oh this is fun but they're these because it was so super camp yeah yeah i'm like oh like intentionally yeah but i'm but it's like oh yeah these guys are it's everybody playing dress up and we're all having a bit of fun. And then I saw the trailer for Batman 1989 and I went, oh, my God, Batman's real. And look, ultimately, Batman 89 is about as camp as the 1960s. Yes. It just has different lighting. It's different lighting and the costumes a lot darker.
Starting point is 00:37:23 Yeah. Also, if you watch that trailer now. It's real bad it's a really bad trailer it's real it's real clunky unconnected it's like yeah it's like this they didn't know how to make trailers back then no i think maybe back then the director made the trailer so i think that was that tradition between like them explaining what happens in a movie trailer and not explaining it. Because I think there's no voiceover guy in that first teaser. Yeah, because the movies in the 60s were always like, this is a man and he's a detective.
Starting point is 00:37:52 And there's a heist. What happens in the heist? They get away with it. Or do they? They do. They do. Watch it. I mean, I just spoiled it for you.
Starting point is 00:38:02 So it was actually the highest grossing film of 1989. That's true. It was, yeah. But there was some buildup, wasn't there? When they say highest, it was like $250 million, which was a lot of money back then. In the 80s. Imagine how much 80s coke you could get for that.
Starting point is 00:38:16 So much. So much. That was before they cut it. Oh, they probably still cut it. Yeah. You know, Ivan Reitman and Joe Dante were attached to a director at one point, like leading up. Like they started still cut it. Yeah. You know, Ivan Reitman and Joe Dante were attached to a director at one point, like leading up.
Starting point is 00:38:26 Like they started looking at this like as early as like, I was going to say the early 80s, late 70s after Superman was kind of. Yeah, it was going to be called The Batman, I think. Oh, really? Okay. Yeah, just The Batman. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:38:36 And it was going to be like, it was, it was, I think it was going to be more of sort of a Batman Begins where it was kind of the origin was the whole movie. Yeah. But with it, you know, with Batman 89, we just got... Yeah. We got the little... Do you ever dance... Just a snippet.
Starting point is 00:38:50 Do you ever dance the Devil in the Pale Moonlight? What does that mean? What does it mean? I don't know what it means. Exactly. But yeah, it was going to be... The Joker's going to be the villain. Same in the script.
Starting point is 00:39:00 Yeah. The Penguin's going to appear in it. Great. I think Robin shows up in the final act. Well, I've got here that Robin was going to be, they were considered at one point to be Eddie Murphy with Bill Murray as Batman. Wow.
Starting point is 00:39:13 Bruce Wayne. Is that real though? Apparently. I was looking at trivias and that's what it said. Okay. That's how that goes. Sorry, go on. Robin Williams was originally going to be considered as the Joker.
Starting point is 00:39:24 Used as leverage, apparently. Doug, what are you up to? Explain that. Okay, so they wanted Jack Nicholson. Yep. Apparently one of the producers or writers or directors or somebody associated with this movie. Yes.
Starting point is 00:39:35 That's as specific as I'm willing to get. They took a picture from The Shining, you know where Jack Nicholson's face is through the wood panel and he's got the big grin? Yeah. And they kind of sketched Joker makeup onto onto it and then went he's perfect so they were negotiating with him but in the meantime they went and signed robin williams uh-huh uh to be and then went back to jack nicholson and went well if you don't do it you don't do it we've got robin williams
Starting point is 00:40:00 and then he agreed so they booted Robin Williams and as a result Robin Williams was like pissed obviously yeah and they even went to him for Batman Forever and said you want to be the Riddler yeah he was like no I'm not doing any Warner Brothers properties until you apologize to me wow which I think is fair enough yeah because they just used him to get Nicholson but that is a very long it's a long period of time. If somebody went through that much effort to court me and then just to use me as like a decoy, then I would also be annoyed. Yeah, that would be mean, actually. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:40:32 So, this guy called Michael Usland. Usland? Asland. Asland. The magical lion. Liam Neeson lion. The magical lion from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:40:42 He secured the film rights in 1979, I think. Because weren't they going to do like a camp version before that? That was the idea? No, they wanted to do a... Like Batman in Space or something? Oh, almost certainly. Yeah. But I think they wanted to do...
Starting point is 00:40:55 Michael Uslan wanted to do a serious one. Yeah. And they went to like basically every studio in Hollywood and they're like... Hey, every studio in Hollywood. Yeah, they just had a bullhorn. What do you reckon? But they were like, man is a you know a man in tights pretending to be a bat uh i don't think he's pretending to be a bat all right he's not pretending nobody's fooled no that's true yeah come here yeah and they're like well we can't you know we can't do
Starting point is 00:41:21 a serious movie about that yeah because it's you know he's a. Yeah. He's a guy out of the funny pages. Absolutely. But then I guess, you know, Superman kicked it off. That's off. Kicked it right off. Wasn't the idea as well that you wanted to take it back to like the original Batman from the comics, like this grim, dark murderer. Yeah, hence the Batman. Yeah, absolutely.
Starting point is 00:41:40 And all this kind of came about, it was before like The Killing Joke and Dark Knight Returns. That's true. It was, yeah. In fact, I think maybe Dark Knight Returns was probably the turning point. Yeah, absolutely. Like they were like, okay. What year was that?
Starting point is 00:41:57 86? Yeah, sounds about right. And I think they were like, okay, we see how you can cover, you know, it's grimmer and it's grittier and we see how you can cover you know it's it's more it's it's grimmer and it's grittier and we we see how this could work yeah yeah we see how we could translate ridiculous man in tights who doesn't think he's a bat he dresses a bat into the real world and then okay we can do this i think the burton version actually thinks he's a bat though yeah he does because he hangs upside down yeah and he's always sleeping in his cave yeah that's it uh-huh so yeah i guess tim burton came on at some point like the mid 80s
Starting point is 00:42:32 yeah yeah and i've got some names here for batman uh-huh you want to hear i think he'd come off peewee's big adventure he did it was his previous yeah so people were like please don't right and then that they considered mel gibson ke Kevin Costner, Charlie Sheen. Oh, Mel Gibson. Do you reckon that works? 80s Mel Gibson, I think works. I'm just trying to, because he would have had a mullet. You'd have to tie it back.
Starting point is 00:42:54 Tie back the mullet. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. Kevin Costner. Tying back a mullet. Tying back a mullet. No. No, I don mullet. No.
Starting point is 00:43:08 No, I don't like it either. No, I don't like that. Charlie Sheen. Tied back. I don't know if he had a mullet. Hang on, let me think. In Hot Shots 2, he did. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:43:15 I don't think he did have a mullet. No. I'm going to say no. Yeah, I agree. Tom Selleck. I'm pushing back my mustache. If they did Dark Knight Returns, he could have started with a mustache and then shaved it off. That's true, yeah.
Starting point is 00:43:27 Harrison Ford? I like Tom Selleck. I think that works. Yeah, Tom Selleck would have worked, yeah. Harrison Ford? Can you imagine getting him into that suit? Yeah, no. Weights 70 pounds, that suit.
Starting point is 00:43:37 Yeah, exactly. The original bat suit, yeah. I feel like he'd be better equipped for it than Michael Keaton was, though. Dennis Quaid? Yeah, okay. I like that a lot. Yeah, I though. Dennis Quaid? Yeah, okay. I like that a lot. Yeah, I can see Dennis Quaid, yeah.
Starting point is 00:43:47 Willem Dafoe? No. Apparently rumoured for the Joker, but apparently he actually went for Bruce Wayne. Well, see, sometimes with movies of this era, or just all the stuff in general, people will make a Photoshop of that actor as that character and be like, here's a makeup test they did back in the 80s, you know what I mean? Yes.
Starting point is 00:44:11 It's a lie. It's a lie. They're living a lie. And apparently they approached both Pierce Brosnan and Ray Liotta who turned it down. I think Ray Liotta would have worked. I think he wouldn't have worked. Yeah, that's right.
Starting point is 00:44:22 In your face, Ray Liotta. That's right, yeah. We know you listen. We hate you. Guess who suggested Keaton? Burton? Not Burton. John Peters. Oh, famous Batman producer John Peters.
Starting point is 00:44:37 And Superman lives. And Superman producer John Peters. Yeah. Famous lunatic. Famous former hairdresser. Former hairdresser of Barbra Streisand. Wrestle people in the office. Yep.
Starting point is 00:44:46 John Peters. One of Hollywood's real colourful characters. Biggest hair. Yeah. Yeah. Probably pioneered the mullet. He probably did. And so, yeah, Michael Keaton was a stand-up comedian.
Starting point is 00:45:02 He was in a movie called Mr. Mom. Yep, classic. Where he was a man. Get this. He was a man. Yeah. Staying at home looking after the kids. A man.
Starting point is 00:45:14 Is this in like a parallel dimension? Can you imagine it? Can you imagine it? I'm picturing the poster. Uh-huh. And I might be wrong, but is it him holding up a baby awkwardly while another kid tugs on his pants? I think he's holding a baby in one hand and he's vacuuming with the other hand,
Starting point is 00:45:29 which is pure insanity, you know what I mean? Is that a good movie? I don't know, I can't remember. Yeah. People were not happy, though. He was the Ben Affleck being cast as Batman of his day. Okay, you know what? There's a series of different posters for Mr. Mom.
Starting point is 00:45:46 He's definitely holding some kids. He is holding up a kid. He appears to be drying a kid's butt with a hand dryer in a bathroom, so that's pretty good. Look, he's not happy about performing. Look, the wife is clearly wearing some sort of pant suit. She's clearly off to some sort of big corporate job. She's probably in marketing. And Mr. Mom's clearly off to some sort of big corporate job. She's probably in marketing.
Starting point is 00:46:05 And Mr. Mom is not happy about it. He is livid. He is livid. Oh, there he is. He's got a vacuum. He's wearing an apron. He's got a vacuum cleaner. Can you imagine?
Starting point is 00:46:19 The 80s were crazy, man. The 80s were crazy, weren't they? That's a crazy idea. Oh, that would never work. Imagine what a world would be like if men were at home. Just look at it. Just helping out around the house. Anyway, he was in that.
Starting point is 00:46:34 Yeah, he was in that. Which was apparently a wacky comedy with a wacky premise. And people were like, well, we're not going to buy him as Batman. And then he did Beetlejuice. And also, he's really short. Yeah. I mean, he's not regularly. No, he's not like tiny.
Starting point is 00:46:45 But he's not Hollywood tall. He's regular human height. He's not really short. Yeah. I mean, he's not regularly. No, he's not like tiny. But he's not Hollywood tall. He's regular human height. He's not Batman tall. No. What's Batman? 6'2"? Is that right? 6'2", yeah.
Starting point is 00:46:52 He's 6'2". And Batman's 6'4". Yeah. But not in the New Year. It's reversed. Yeah, it's reversed. I've got here, there was 50,000 protest letters sent to Warner Brothers. Wow.
Starting point is 00:47:01 It was a hand-typed or hand-written letter. Imagine a world in which you didn't have the internet, but you cared enough about anything to write a protest letter or sign a petition about it. Yeah. Can you imagine? Well, there's that Get Zack Snyder Off Justice League petition. I think they're just going to do whatever.
Starting point is 00:47:17 These petitions don't mean anything. They're just going to do whatever they want to do. Exactly, yeah. They've already run the numbers. They're going to do whatever they're going to do. You were pretty young when this came out, though. Do you remember any of that? No, not at all.
Starting point is 00:47:28 Yeah, you just remember seeing the trailer and being like... Yeah, I didn't have time to be cynical. I hadn't seen Mr. Mom. Yes, yet. Yeah. Now it's everywhere, isn't it? You can't bloody get away from it. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:47:39 So many Mr. Mom memes, you know? They're all about the place. But yeah, people are like oh he's so he's short and scrawny he's got weird curly hair and he's he's not they didn't even tie back his weird mullet yeah he had kind of a weird it was a short mullet but it was a mullet it was like a like a almost like a jerry curl yeah yeah but he's got naturally curly hair though yeah yeah yeah so yeah so usland got a call from the studio that burton had cast michael keaton and he thought it was a joke like initially maybe it was april fool's day you know he's like
Starting point is 00:48:12 all right and they just had to like sit him on the phone for half an hour to be like no no this is this is really happening and he's like well this is this so they had to arrange some sort of emergency meeting because he's like are you trying bur, are you trying to make a comedy here? Yeah. And no, Burton doesn't make comedies. Or does he? Pee-wee's Big Adventure. I've never seen it.
Starting point is 00:48:35 I know it's a crowd favourite and they made that new one recently. If it's the one where he's got the magical bike that flies, I have seen it. It's pretty good. Okay then, let's get on it. Yeah, but they just released that new one for Netflix as well. That'sflix as well yeah until he was caught doing lewd behavior in a cinema theater oh imagine that as well oh imagine when you you had to go out for lewd behavior
Starting point is 00:48:55 yeah you know you're covered in your own home now isn't it yeah anytime i hear about a celebrity who's caught in a who was was that recently? There was that guy from... That actor, that older actor. He's in all the Best in Show. He's in all those movies. He's like the most... He's like one of the most beloved character actors. Yeah. Ah, he's like Mr. Rogers.
Starting point is 00:49:15 Yeah, yeah, yeah. But anytime he... Yeah, anytime any old like celebrity is caught in like an adult theatre, I'm like, oh, that's quaint. It's quaint and it's sad yeah or it's real creepy because maybe they're like well being lewd in my own home isn't enough i have to well i think often if you're like it's like this probably doesn't apply to that guy but if you're a super
Starting point is 00:49:36 famous celebrity fred willard is fred willard like you don't understand the internet there's a really a humorous video where i think i think think it's Eminem is showing like an interviewer, his room of pornography. And the interviewer's like, you know, like. Even that's kind of quaint. Yeah, I know. Exactly. The interviewer's like, you know, like there's the internet. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:49:56 And he's like, what? Like he had no idea. Wow. I think it was Eminem. I might be wrong on that. Now let's assume it's Eminem. Yeah. And you face Eminem.
Starting point is 00:50:03 We know you listen and we hate you. Alternate casting for Nicholson's Joker as well be wrong on that. Now let's assume it's Eminem. Yeah. In your face, Eminem. We know you listen and we hate you. Alternate casting for Nicholson's Joker as well was John Lithgow. Oh, that is surprising. David Bowie. Yeah, okay. I like that. Tim Curry, who actually played him in the animated series early on.
Starting point is 00:50:23 That's true, before Mark Hamill. That would work. And Tim Burton really wanted Brad Dourif. I have no idea who that is. He's Wormtongue in the Lord of the Rings movies. He's in Mississippi Burning, I think. Okay. He's really good. Which one is Wormtongue again?
Starting point is 00:50:36 He's the slippery Wormtongue looking dude. Was he a king and then he was transformed into a slippery Wormtongue man? No, the king was being Wormtongued. Oh, he's being Wormtongued. Okay No, the king was being like, being worm-tongued. Oh, he's being worm-tongued, okay. Because the king was all old and withery and worm-tongued. That's true. He was like, you're a dickhead. Okay, that's how I remember that. I'm in charge. There's too many characters in those movies. I think there's not enough
Starting point is 00:50:55 characters. Okay, fine. Even though they cut out like 50 characters. Tom Bombadil. Classic character Tom Bombadil. Yeah. They should have replaced one of the characters with a new character. In Lola Riggs. Yeah. They did that for The Hobbit a lot.
Starting point is 00:51:09 Like they brought in extra characters. Maybe they shouldn't have done it then. Maybe. All those dwarves sure looked the same, didn't they? Yeah. They wanted David. Here's one that I remember. They wanted David Niven for Alfred.
Starting point is 00:51:20 Who's David Niven again? David Niven. The most famous British actor of all time. Hang on. What's the guy's name they got? Michael Gow. Yeah, he's good.
Starting point is 00:51:31 I like him. Yeah, he was good. Michael Gow, and I understand why Tim Burton passed. Of course. God, David Niven. Idiot.
Starting point is 00:51:37 Sorry. You'll have to edit that out. Yeah, I think they got Michael Gow because Michael Gow was famous for a lot of, he was in a lot of Hammer Horror films. Yes. He was in like Your Draculas and so forth. Burton loved all that. Yeah, exactly think they got Michael Gale because Michael Gale was famous for a lot of, he was in a lot of Hammer Horror films.
Starting point is 00:51:45 Yes. He was in like your Draculas and so forth. And Burton loved all that, didn't he? Yeah, exactly, yeah. Because Burton's not like us. He's a bit of a recluse. He's a bit different. He's a bit out there, isn't he?
Starting point is 00:51:54 He's so random. He just loves films. He just loves making films. He just loves the power of film. He just loves film. You know what I mean? He does, yeah. He loves film. And he didn't direct Night? He does, yeah. He loves film.
Starting point is 00:52:05 And he didn't direct Nightmare Before Christmas, everybody. Everybody thinks he did, but he didn't. Who directed it? Some other dude. Nice, good, good, good. It doesn't matter who the credit goes to as long as it doesn't go to Tim Burton. Yeah. What else we got here?
Starting point is 00:52:20 Sean Young. We were talking about Sean Young earlier. Yeah, yeah. She was going to be the original Vicky Vale. Vicky Vale, yeah. But then she broke something. Collarbone. There Young earlier. Yeah. She was going to be the original Vicky Vale. Vicky Vale, yeah. But then she broke something. Collarbone. There we go.
Starting point is 00:52:27 Right. During rehearsals. That's embarrassing for her. Must have been in that thing where she flies up on the wire. Yeah. But then again, that was probably a stunt person. But then again, maybe it wasn't. Maybe the stunt person landed on her.
Starting point is 00:52:37 Yeah, maybe. Are you happy with the Vicky Vale we ended up though with? Kim Basinger? Kim. Basinger. We always said Basinger back in the day. It's Basinger. And then she pulled the Demi Moore and she decided she didn't like how her name was pronounced.
Starting point is 00:52:50 Well, too bad. Basinger. Yeah. We know you listen. That's right. And we hate you. Yeah, good. She was, I mean, would they cast, Vicky Vale is in Batman v Superman, right?
Starting point is 00:53:02 There's a woman called Vicky who introduces Lex when he makes that weird speech. That's right, yeah. Who's to say? There's probably more than one Vicky in the DC universe. Probably, yeah. Yeah, I mean, I don't think they'd cast, because she's an investigative journalist. Yes.
Starting point is 00:53:16 Allegedly. With a beret. Oh, it's all flooding back. Maybe this movie isn't as good as I remember. I think it's exactly as good as you remember. Yeah, great. Maybe this movie isn't as good as I remember. I think it's exactly as good as you remember.
Starting point is 00:53:24 Yeah, great. But yeah, she had that Vaseline on the lens, 80s glam look about her. But I don't think they'd cast, they wouldn't cast that character the same these days. You don't think they'd do it? No, because they want to be more Amy Adams, more, I'm beautiful, but I'm also a serious journalist. You know what I mean? Like us. Yeah, exactly. Okay.
Starting point is 00:53:46 Yeah, we get things done, but we're also pretty easy on the eyes. You know it. Good look. I believe during all her scenes, she wore like flat shoes. All the scenes with Michael Caden. Yeah. She was significantly taller than him. And she was a model, I assume.
Starting point is 00:54:00 Correct, yes. I mean, she's still a beautiful woman. And she was married to baldwin one of the alec baldwin definitely one of the baldwins i think was also considered but then i think he turned it down and then he made the shadow some people some actors they do a movie and you know it's their regret movie because the next movie is like is the it's a poor man's version of that yeah league of extraordinary gentlemen everything sean connery's done ever pretty much everything he's done because the next movie is like it's a poor man's version of that League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
Starting point is 00:54:25 everything Sean Connery's done ever pretty much everything he's done he's just been chasing Sean Connery's basically been chasing the last movie he missed out on his whole career that's right and every now and then he'll do like The Rock
Starting point is 00:54:38 but then sometimes he'll do League of Extraordinary Gentlemen yeah like he'll do Finding Forrester which is like the poor man's Good Will Hunting that's true yeah Sometimes he'll do League of Extraordinary Films. Yeah, like he'll do Finding Forrester, which is like the poor man's Good Will Hunting. That's true, yeah. Yeah. I don't know whether he was... That features the classic line,
Starting point is 00:54:51 you're the man now, dog. It's pretty great. I was going to do the accent, but then I bailed at the last second. I think you got the nuance. The gist of it. Yeah, I got the Sean Connery nuance out of it. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:55:02 Yeah. But what do you think the story was? Oh, no. Are we up to that yet or you got more like- Do I have more facts? No, that's about it. Yeah. I think one of the producers said of Michael Keaton at the time,
Starting point is 00:55:16 he doesn't have a square jaw. He's sure he doesn't have a square jaw. Burton said, a square jaw does not a Batman make. Kind of does though. Yeah, well, it's part of it. That's why, yeah, Ben Affleck's got the squarest jaw you've ever seen right yeah man but back in the day like like helmet technology was not great you couldn't build somebody a square jaw if they didn't have one you know sure helmet technology is only just reached i feel like i feel like you're right yeah
Starting point is 00:55:41 think of captain america i am thinking of it. Puffy in the Avengers. Weird. So puffy. Even though he's super ripped. Exactly. Yeah. It doesn't make any sense. So yeah, story.
Starting point is 00:55:50 What is it? Tell me. Oh, okay. Right. Okay. So there's a couple and they're a couple and a kid and they're like walking through the streets of Gotham. I don't think that's the start though, is it? Yeah, it is.
Starting point is 00:56:01 Isn't that a flashback? No. All right. So go on. It's a bloody, it's a mirror image of the origin of Batman. Oh, I thought you were telling the origin thing. Oh, Batman. No, no, no.
Starting point is 00:56:12 There's a couple and they're walking through Gotham City and it's that weird neo-retro 1940s Gotham, but it's also the modern day. Yeah. Which was then very successfully copied into Batman the Animated Series. Agreed. But, yeah, they're walking through the city with their coats and their hats and their fur stoles and what have you, and they're like,
Starting point is 00:56:31 I sure hope we're walking through the city. We should have got a cab. I hope we don't get robbed. And then they're robbed by, like, 1980s thugs. In the 30s? Yeah, exactly, who are like, we're on drugs. We just love robbing people. American Express, ha, ha, ha, ha. And they're on a rooftop and they're like, we're on drugs. We just love robbing people. American Express, ha, ha, ha, ha.
Starting point is 00:56:46 And they're on a rooftop and they're like, we got away with a crime. Yeah, they did. Why go to the rooftop? Yeah, that's where Batman hangs out. Yeah. Also- Go to a brightly lit cafe.
Starting point is 00:56:57 Also, now that I think about it, Batman doesn't stop the crime. No. He just avenges the crime. So those two people are still very traumatized. Do you think he returned their shit? I don't think we ever find out. Yeah. No. He just avenges the crime. So those two people are still very traumatized. Absolutely. Do you think he returned their shit?
Starting point is 00:57:08 I don't think we ever find out. Yeah. Maybe the police do. Yeah, mate. That's not Batman's deal. Anyway, Batman shows up and he beats them up. And he's wearing Nikes. Is he?
Starting point is 00:57:16 No. Have a look. All right. Google it right now. I will. Yeah. So that's the story, isn't it? Yeah. And then he does the classic constantly parodied I'm Batman.
Starting point is 00:57:25 Apparently that was improvised. Oh. Yeah, by the actor who played Batman. Burton was just like, say what you feel. And he's like, I'm Batman. Yeah, that's me. Yeah. Well, he nailed that.
Starting point is 00:57:35 And then it turns out the cops do not care for this Batman fellow. Well, they don't even know if he's a real fellow. Yeah. They're like, maybe it's just... The wind. Maybe it's just the wind maybe it's just the wind exactly a very specific wind that stops crime sometimes i mean after it's been committed not before all right they do kind of look like they are nikes they've got the swoosh on it
Starting point is 00:58:00 the swoosh on them yeah yeah all right well he's on them. Yeah. Yeah, all right. He's got a jog, doesn't he? Yeah, I guess that's true, yeah. Yeah, build on a classic, that's what I say. And then what happens? Then bloody... Then he goes to the chemical factory. Oh, yeah, because it turns out that the Jack Napier, major crime man Jack Napier, is going to bust into the Axis chemical plant
Starting point is 00:58:26 in this case, not the Ace chemical plant. Don't know why the difference. Yeah. I don't know why a lot of the differences are in this, but anyway. Yeah. And then because, as we know, Jack Palance wants Jack Napier to bust in there, number one crime man because he's his number one guy. Yeah, my number one guy. You're my number one guy.
Starting point is 00:58:46 You're my number one guy. There's a bit of that. There's a bit of shoulder fondling. And he does that later as well to Bob. That's true, yeah. Yeah, yeah. And then it turns out it's all a setup because Jack Napy was sleeping with his number one mole.
Starting point is 00:59:01 Yes. Played by Jerry Hall. Oh, right, yeah. That's mole. Yes. Played by Jerry Hall. Oh, right. Yeah. That's weird. Yeah. And it's also, and Batman's also there to murder everybody. He's there to quote unquote stop the crimes happening.
Starting point is 00:59:15 But really he's just there to- Deflect bullets into people's faces. Yeah. Do you like the Joker origin? Yeah, it's fine. I don't think the bullet through the face Mouth Grin surgery
Starting point is 00:59:27 Oh, the surgery thing makes any sense No We'll see In Batman 89 We have a I thought this was quite good at the time It's the Joker who can't not smile Right, right
Starting point is 00:59:36 I kind of like that That he's frozen His mouth is frozen in that Because your comic book Joker can frown Yeah He's just mad Yeah Yeah, I guess You don't care for it? I think it looks weird in that because your comic book joker can frown yeah he's just mad yeah yeah i guess but i think but burton always burton likes a weird unnecessary surgery scene you know what i mean
Starting point is 00:59:54 edward scissorhands big fish other things he's been in big eyes yes exactly that was a new one trying to think of other ones the one with with Johnny Depp and he's a vampire. Vampire Diary. I don't know what it's called. Okay, right, yeah. But he wants the weird surgical tools. They're from Little Shop of Horrors, did you know that? Oh, really? Yeah, I did know.
Starting point is 01:00:14 Reused equipment. Do they do that? Sometimes. I thought they threw everything out when a movie finished. They just burnt the building down. What they do is they light the building on, generally they light the prop building on fire and whoever's in the movie or on the crew
Starting point is 01:00:25 just steals as much as they can. And if you burn to death... Some make it out, some don't. It's your own fault. That's Hollywood, baby. Yeah, that's right. Welcome to showbiz, baby. But anyway, so then the Joker attempts to shoot Batman.
Starting point is 01:00:42 Batman deflects it with his cape. Doesn't he use his gauntlets? Maybe. He might use his cape, though. Yeah. I think there's definitely a cape flourish. Definitely. Jack Nappy gets shot in the face.
Starting point is 01:00:53 He falls into a vat of chemicals. He's not happy about it. He's not happy about it. Initially. And then he's very happy about it. And then he goes to Weird Doctor, puts his face back together. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:01:02 He becomes the Joker. He goes to a meeting of mob bosses. Well, actually, first he goes to Jack Palance. He does. And he joy buzzes him. No, he... He does. Doesn't he, like, zap?
Starting point is 01:01:12 No. Is it Jack Palance who he zaps him onto? This is a great recap, I feel. It's the best recap. No, he joy buzzes a different guy. That's what I thought. Yeah, like a different issue. Anyway, he kills Jack Palance in a way that I can't remember.
Starting point is 01:01:22 I think he just shoots him. And then he scars Jerry Hall with that. Yes, he does. No, he does. He shoots him in a variety of fun, different ways I think he just shoots him and then he scars Jerry Hall yes he does no he does he shoots him in a variety of fun different ways under the arm behind the back
Starting point is 01:01:29 under the leg oh we're reminiscing isn't it fun and then he disfigures Jerry Hall with acid man I know
Starting point is 01:01:37 which is real mean and that's off camera we don't see that happen and then he shows up at a bloody meeting of the mines the meeting of the minds the meeting of the minds the crime minds and he bloody roasts one of them to death in a way that is very graphic
Starting point is 01:01:50 for children yeah and then he continued then he monologues for a bit for quite a while afterwards it's very much it is a it is a mirror to the scene in the dark knight which one the scene where he shows up with the mob boss and he kills the guy with the pencil. Oh, yeah. Same scene, ultimately. Yeah, okay, fair enough. Yeah. Some did it better than others. Oh.
Starting point is 01:02:10 Oh. Do you like this Joker? Yes. Okay. Do you not like this Joker? What's wrong with this Joker? Why do you hate this Joker so much? For one, he's like 70 years old.
Starting point is 01:02:22 Okay, sure. Out the gate. Yeah. There's a guy they get for the flashback who kills, because the Joker killed Batman's parents, it turns out, in this version. Yes, it did, yeah. And I don't know who that dude is, but he's like dead on. Right.
Starting point is 01:02:37 And about the right age. Okay. But this one, he's a 70-year-old man. He's not 70. No, maybe he's 55. I don't know. Whatever. But he's lived the life of Jack Nichold man. He's not 70. Maybe he's 55. I don't know. Whatever. But he's lived the life of Jack Nicholson.
Starting point is 01:02:48 That's true. His internal organs are just liquefied at this point. He's flouncing about. There's the bit where he comes into the art gallery, and there's the Prince song, and he does the dance, and he's got the floofy hat. You know what? The Prince soundtrack really lets this movie down.
Starting point is 01:03:00 I know a lot of people love Prince, but I hate him. I don't see the appeal makes no sense yeah apparently that bird dance that nicholson did yes it was was improvised oh so a lot of a lot of this i think is nicholson just doing because apparently he had a later cut call than everybody else okay and because he got paid more, exactly. He got in like 60 million from this, which is like the biggest salary of forever at the time. But, you know, I don't hate him. I just, it's very, I think it's very dated. And I think, I understand why they got him.
Starting point is 01:03:35 It's that whole thing like getting Marlon Brando for the first Superman movie. Like you get a big name actor and then you get kind of lesser knowns. Yes, okay, sure. I get it. But also, I guess to the film's credit, he's never a physical match for Batman. big name actor and then you get kind of lesser knowns yes okay sure i get it but i but also i guess to the film's credit he's never a physical match for batman even the smallest batman in the
Starting point is 01:03:51 world that's true like they have a showdown at the end and batman just like pastes him he does and there's not even he's he's momentarily inconvenienced by some of the joker's gimmicks but it's never really yeah no it's not a... But I feel that's also because at certain points he is a dame. Like, he's got the acid-squirting flower, and he's got all sorts of stuff, and goons, and all kinds of things. So I think at certain... And he's got the real big gun. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:04:16 I think at certain points he is a threat, but the... I don't know. It's Batman confronting his demons right at the end, and you don't need... And by demons, you mean a lunatic dressed as a clown. Yeah, who maybe killed his parents. Maybe he didn't kill his parents. I think he did.
Starting point is 01:04:31 All right. I think it's confirmed. I think it's very heavily implied in the Burton Batman films that Batman seems to think that whoever the villain is at the time was the one who killed his parents. Because he always has a weird kind of flashback or moment where he falls in a cave or he's traumatised. I think in one version, Jim Carrey uses a TV to get in his mind.
Starting point is 01:04:53 That's right, yep. But we'll get to those another time. Yeah, he's fine, whatever. See, that's the thing. I think he's of his time, definitely. That is certainly true. But I think it's a great look. I think it's a great characterisation. He wears his pants characterization he wears his pants pretty high wears very high pants which i appreciate where
Starting point is 01:05:09 did he get all the outfits on such short notice it's a very good question because again he's not he's not a las vegas lounge singer and they're kind of gross as well because vicky bell's like kissing his shoulder at one point he's got she gets like lint do you remember that yeah he's like do you remember that yeah he makes her dance look he like... Do you remember that bit? Yeah, yeah. Where he makes her dance? Look, he is unsettling. Yeah. So, to his credit, he's not like... He's not funny.
Starting point is 01:05:29 I don't know whether he's supposed to be funny or not, but he's not. Uh-huh. He just says a whole bunch of random shit. Yeah. Like... That was funny in the 80s. I guess it was. That was the beginning of things being so random.
Starting point is 01:05:42 All right, what do you think of the film as a whole, though? Like, action set pieces. Something great terrible terrible really like terrible action the car's cool the car is very cool exactly uh um the fighting is garbage because the suit doesn't work some of the time there is a moment in it there is a very much a Harrison Ford, Raiders of the Lost Ark kind of thing where there's the guy with the two swords and he's flailing wildly and then Batman just hits him in the nuts or whatever. Yeah, because he's got that device specifically to hit a man in the nuts. That's right, yeah. It looks like a brake pedal comes out from his sleeve
Starting point is 01:06:19 when he hits a guy in the nuts. Yeah. Do you like Keaton? Yes. So do I. He doesn't look the part as Bruce Wayne. And it's weird in ways it shouldn't be. But he's good.
Starting point is 01:06:35 But now he looks like Bruce Wayne, right? Yes, now he does. Modern day Michael Keaton looks exactly like Bruce Wayne. Which is why I enjoyed Birdman so much. And why I feel sad that Batman v Superman took away Dark Knight Returns yes because I think
Starting point is 01:06:50 we can never get it now Michael Keaton as old future Batman would have been great maybe in 10 years if they really tank this universe they'll do it they'll reboot it again maybe
Starting point is 01:06:58 gosh I hope so that's what you need isn't it yeah yeah or maybe if they're going to do like Flashpoint and Parallel Dimensions they could do that I mean they work because it'd be real confusing but uh you know it is no i like him too and you know what i i don't love that batman suit i've said that before it looks weird and clunky you can't turn his head apparently couldn't hear in it it was really claustrophobic really hard to get out of the car couldn't get out of the car like couldn't do a
Starting point is 01:07:21 flip properly yeah you can do a flip at the best of times it's hard isn't it yeah but no i think he's good i like his batman voice as well that's true yeah i think he's solid man and i like his little eyeliners that he has on that one did you like the commissioner gordon they got what's his name uh yeah i let me think he looked exactly like the 60s version pat ingall yeah there we go yeah yeah yeah yeah he was great and of course you loved character who would return later in part three billy d williams's harvey den i did yeah who they screwed out of the idea was that he would turn up as as two-faced two-faced yeah yeah didn't happen though obviously well it did but it was it was but it was Tommy Lee Jones doing a Jack Nicholson Joker impersonation. Yeah, true.
Starting point is 01:08:09 Yeah. But, no, you like the action though. Mm. I like the let's get nuts scene. Sure. The scene with Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne out of character. That's, yeah. In Vicky Val's apartment.
Starting point is 01:08:21 That's. Just wheeling a, like a fireplace poker and screaming let's get nuts that's the only scene i feel like he gets to kind of stretch himself though a bit okay because it's these burton batman films have so little to do with batman especially batman returns yeah okay which which we'll get to it's more they're more a showcase for tim burton's weirdness exactly yeah i think i think tim burton Burton thinks Batman is the least interesting part of the Batman movies. Oh, definitely.
Starting point is 01:08:46 That's what I think. Well, and as famously, Kevin Smith had a go at Tim Burton. Yeah. What did he say? First of all, he made a joke that Tim Burton had stolen his ending from a Jay and Silent Bob comic where the Statue of Liberty has a gorilla's head. That's right, for Planet of the Apes.
Starting point is 01:09:06 Planet of the Apes. And Tim Burton, yeah, used that. And Tim Burton said of him, I would never read a comic book and I would especially never read a comic book written by Kevin Smith. Yeah. Which is good advice ultimately. You know, he's Green Arrow. Yeah, Green Arrow was good.
Starting point is 01:09:20 And he's Daredevil. Yeah, that was pretty good. Okay, cool. I take back everything I've ever said. Yeah. But yeah, so Burton was not a comic book guy. No. Ultimately this.
Starting point is 01:09:29 Reflects that. Yeah, I think so. Though when I read also that he did read Dark Knight Returns and he did read The Killing Joke, but I don't know whether that's true. Maybe he just looked at the pictures. He might have just, yeah. I think probably just somebody blew up some of the frames and went, how about this? Like they did for Batman, Superman.
Starting point is 01:09:47 Correct. Yeah. Because it's got a lot of imagery, but not a lot of else. Correct. Yeah. Yeah, no, I don't know. So there is that scene in the, where they fight on the street and Batman beats up some goons, which is quite good.
Starting point is 01:10:00 Like he punches one over a car and into some bins or something. Yes. And that's okay, I guess. Yep. They clearly speed up the car because it could only go like 20 right because as with most batmobiles yeah as with most batmobiles they just speed up the film like the 60s batmobile except for the tumbler i think oh that that's the real deal and i'm not sure about the new one it seems like it could it's mostly cgi i would guess sure yeah this movie also the the bad thing about this movie everything else is amazing in this movie but the i guess this movie set the precedent that batman will from time to time kill a few people yes yes you know
Starting point is 01:10:38 yeah so he murders the joker i guess not, but at the same time, pretty directly. Yeah, I mean, there's no way the Joker... So at the end of the film, for anyone who hasn't seen it, spoiler alert, we've spoiled a lot of this already. But I mean, definitely say it. Or don't, who cares? The Joker attempts to escape by jumping onto the landing rail of a helicopter. Yes. Batman then throws a batarang around the Joker's leg.
Starting point is 01:11:07 I think he uses like a gun. Oh, maybe. Yeah. And then he ties that line, the grappling line, to a gargoyle on the top of the building. Yes. And then the helicopter breaks off the gargoyle. Yeah. And so it's Joker swinging on the bottom of a helicopter with this enormous stone weight below him yeah and ultimately there's no way no he could have gotten out of that
Starting point is 01:11:29 alive no and i guess maybe batman was banking on the joker letting go of the ladder and just swinging harmlessly into the side of a building oh sure yeah uh-huh maybe you could have fired another grappling line at him or whatever that's what the dark knight did yeah yeah but uh i think that's definitely a homage, you know, the Joker falling in the Dark Knight and in Batman 89. But yeah, and then he falls to his death and then he has a weird voice box modulating that's laughing or it's in his jacket.
Starting point is 01:11:55 I don't know. It is. Yeah. It's the last laugh, isn't it? Oh, in many ways it is. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:11:58 Yeah. But also there's the scene where Batman needs to destroy the Axis chemical plant to get rid of the Smilax gas. That's right. It's plaguing to get rid of the Smilax gas. That's right. It is plaguing the city. All the Smilax, the toxin that is being put in all the beauty products and so forth. Yep, yep.
Starting point is 01:12:13 Now that's a... He kills. I feel that's very Burton. Yes. He's like, beauty is an illusion. Don't use makeup. Just make movies. Just use heavy white paint on on your face cover yourself in white
Starting point is 01:12:26 cloud makeup so yeah batman has to go to the axis chemical plant he drives in yeah he puts up the weird animated armadillo stop motion armadillo shield around the batmobile a whole bunch of goons like wander around it like what's going on here and then very large they shoot it yeah they shoot at it and then very large bombs come out of the wheels of the Batmobile and then the whole Axis chemical plant explodes and Batman drives out. Like a hero. The goons that are surrounding, I like to think they got away somehow. I doubt it.
Starting point is 01:12:58 Yeah, I know. The whole building fell in. Yeah, that's true. And that bomb went off like they were still around the car. Yeah, that's true. When that bomb went off. Look, if you want to see Batman murdering people, I've got my Kill Count video.
Starting point is 01:13:09 Yes, you do. Which you can check out. He also machine guns a bunch of people in the Batwing. Speaking of. Yes. Love the Batwing. Pretty good, right? I love it.
Starting point is 01:13:17 And no one else could do it because it's kind of been done. It's the iconic look now. Yeah. It is exactly. It is the Batman logo. Yeah. Yeah. It looks amazing. I love it. It's got heaps of stuff in it. It's got iconic look now. Yeah. It is exactly. It is the Batman logo. Yeah. It looks amazing. I love it.
Starting point is 01:13:27 It's got heaps of stuff in it. It's got machine guns. It's got missiles. It's got lasers. It's got a pair of scissors. It's not bulletproof. No. Certainly not.
Starting point is 01:13:35 Not on any level. Yeah. But no, I'm not sure about the practicality behind it, but it's great. And it flies up and- Against the moon. Against the moon, which I think you don't like. No, I do like. I love that.
Starting point is 01:13:46 The best. Yeah. And also he throws that guy off the bell tower with his feet. Yeah, that guy's definitely dead. Yeah. That was the Predator, actually, that guy. The actor who played him, yeah. So, yeah.
Starting point is 01:14:00 Anyway, what a great film. Would you like to know some other miscellaneous facts? I would, but before you say that- Yes. Now, we've neglected to mention this with the Superman movies. What a great film would you like to know some other miscellaneous facts i would but before you say that yes no we've neglected to mention this with the superman movies what a great thing true the batman theme like is i think it's the best batman theme i think you're probably right and it carries on over into the animated series which i we should do a whole episode on that actually at some point and and this once we get through the Schumacher movies. That's right. Then we can do the animated series.
Starting point is 01:14:26 And so I could also mention that the John Williams Superman theme is also incredible. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Anyway, give me some bloody things. Let me think. Okay. Oh, here's one. These are from batmanonfilm.com.
Starting point is 01:14:38 Batman hyphen on hyphen film dot com. I'll go there. Okay, you should. For all my needs. Vicky Vale and Alexander Knox, inventor for the film, played by stand-up comedian Robert Wall. Yes. Oh, that's right.
Starting point is 01:14:50 When Batman's watching them through like a giant camera behind a mirror. That's right, yeah. Yeah. What about him? Okay, so at one point- See, that guy could have played Bruce Wayne. No. What, you've got to pick Keaton.
Starting point is 01:15:02 I mean, looks-wise, he's about as intimidating as Michael Keaton. But then Robert Wool went on to play the moral man, the sports agent without a moral compass, Arliss, in the HBO series Arliss. I have not seen it. It's not very good. I bet it's amazing. It's pretty amazing.
Starting point is 01:15:20 Anyway, so at one point, he was Alexander Knox's creator for the film. Right, right. Because they needed a wacky fun stick character. They did really well then. Yeah, yeah, yeah. At one point, they examined a map of Gotham City that has the marked sightings of the Batman. Actually, Vancouver, British Columbia. Good, right?
Starting point is 01:15:36 Great. I thought you were going to say, and all the spots made out the shape of a bat. Oh, that would have been great. Yeah. What else? Maybe I just had the one fact. That's a pretty good fact. Pretty very good fact, right?
Starting point is 01:15:48 I don't know why you'd need another fact after that one. It's just this here, Adam West wanted to play Batman in the movie. He did, yeah. Apparently he was very upset that he didn't get asked back or that he didn't get a cameo either. You okay with that? I would have liked to see him. Is it maybe the mayor of the city?
Starting point is 01:16:04 I feel like though, because it's the 80s, they would have... I think that's something they're more inclined to do now. Yeah. But back then it's like, no, this is serious. This isn't for babies or idiots. This is for serious people. Like serious movies about fucking clowns who dance around to Prince. Oh my.
Starting point is 01:16:24 What a great movie. Don't watch it. You know what? Watch it. It's entertaining. It is. I don't think it's particularly good. I think it's very of the time in a bad way.
Starting point is 01:16:35 How dare you. But it is entertaining. I don't hate it. And it made a ton of money. It made the most money of any movie ever of that year. Yeah, definitely. And so they demanded Tim Burton come back. And he didn't really want to do it.
Starting point is 01:16:53 So they're like, you can do anything you want for this movie. And it shows. You can be as Burton-y as you want. And yeah, see, every problem I have with batman the the movie the original sure is like amplified tenfold oh definitely yeah batman returns yeah which is do you want to explain the story for that one i don't know if i can let me think okay so the first 40 minutes batman doesn't show up yep true the penguin comes out the... He's like a weird vagrant. Yes, he is.
Starting point is 01:17:27 Who then they decide to... Could be mayor of the city. Even though he bites a man's nose off. In public, yeah. In public. Catwoman's in it. Catwoman's in it. She is a secretary.
Starting point is 01:17:38 She's a very meek secretary who's murdered by her boss. Played by Christopher Walken. Who is Max Schreck. Yep. meek secretary who's murdered by her boss played by christopher walken yep who is max shrek yep um and then she comes then all her cats that she lives with bring her back is it her cats or just cats because she falls out of the building yeah and then a whole lot of cats come and like i assumed they were like neighborhood cats but she yeah like they were like her cat like okay sure you know but anyway they bring her back with magic or is it magic i think she was probably just fine because she has nine lives right but i honestly think it's also heavily implied in this movie that's what i took from it
Starting point is 01:18:13 that she has a serious concussion or head injury oh yeah yeah totally she's not okay nobody in this movie is okay every in this movie has suffered some sort of massive trauma, I feel. Yeah. Some of them we see. Yeah. But this movie also set the Batman trend of we're going to have several villains in every movie. Yeah. What do you reckon? No, I don't like it.
Starting point is 01:18:36 Yeah, it's bad, right? Yeah, it doesn't. Look, that being said, I really like Michelle Pfeiffer in this. Now, who was that woman we mentioned before? Sean Young. Yes. She turned up at the production offices in a Catwoman costume, like demanding like an audition.
Starting point is 01:18:50 And Tim Burton's like, don't let her in. In a Catwoman costume. In a Catwoman costume. So presumably the trauma she suffered on the set of the original Batman. Yes. That really set something off. Yes. She's had some personal issues.
Starting point is 01:19:04 Yeah. And I think that this was kind of, that was kicking off around then. But yeah, Annette Bening was cast, but she got pregnant. She dropped out. Do you think Catwoman in this is better than Anne Hathaway Catwoman? I prefer the Anne Hathaway. Right. If only because she, I prefer the origin of Catwoman that she's just a cat burglar.
Starting point is 01:19:25 I agree. And she's not a magic cat powered lunatic. You know what I mean? But I think if you gave Michelle Pfeiffer the Catwoman role that Anne Hathaway did, I think she would have done it. She'd do a better job? I think so. Okay.
Starting point is 01:19:37 Yeah. All right. Yeah. Maybe that's just me. We'll never know. Yeah. We've got this weird mess where she makes a costume out of a shower curtain or something. What happens there? Who's to say to say yeah who is to say so and it's also a movie where batman doesn't have a physical match once again yeah it's except for that real fat clown oh yeah who he kills with a
Starting point is 01:19:58 bomb in the pants yeah and kicks him into a sewer or whatever and then he flamethrows that other clown yes he does he definitely deliberately kills a lot of people in this movie. More so than the last one. More so than the last one, yeah. Were you saying that Tim Burton Batman is the most murdery Batman? I think the new Batman might be the most murdery Batman. Okay, yeah. I might be wrong, but I'd have to look at my kill count.
Starting point is 01:20:19 Your kill count video, yeah. But yeah, it'd be at least 20. Yeah, at least. I don't know, man. Here's some things that were not in this movie. Vicky Vale was cut out. She was in the original script. They turfed her.
Starting point is 01:20:27 Why? Look, I don't know. I think probably... No, I think that the... As I understand it, the original script, it was just such a mess. Yeah. That they were like, we have to streamline this somehow. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:20:40 So Vicky Vale had to go. It was going to be... Robin was going to be in it. Oh, yeah. Marlon Wayans. Marlon Wayans, yeah. Marlon Wayans, one of the Wayanses. One of the ones in Dungeons and Dragons. Yeah. Robin was going to be in it. Oh, yeah. Marlon Wayans. Marlon Wayans, yeah. Marlon Wayans, one of the Wayanses. One of the ones in Dungeons and Dragons.
Starting point is 01:20:47 Yeah. He was going to be just a character called The Kid. Because you couldn't say Robin, could you? No, but he was going to be a mechanic in a bad part of town and the Batmobile breaks down and he comes out and he helps Batman with the Batmobile. And then Batman kills him. Presumably.
Starting point is 01:21:05 One can only hope. But, like, I guess it was going to be, I think he was going to be like a mish, because he was going to be Dick Grayson, so I think there was going to be a mishmash of Dick Grayson and Jason Todd. Right, because Jason Todd stole the wheels off the Batmobile. In Jason Todd's second origin as Jason Todd, he was going to, because in his original origin he was just Dick Grayson again. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:21:26 He was just another circus performer whose parents were killed. Is that true? Yeah, he was the original version of Jason Todd. Yeah, he was a circus trapeze artist again, and his parents were killed, but I think this time by a name villain. I can't remember who it was. Clayface. Might have been Clayface.
Starting point is 01:21:43 Son. And then he decides to become robin again and i guess somebody in dc was like did we do that did we we literally did that we literally did that it'd be very odd so then he when crisis on infinite earths happened and rebooted the universe they're like well let's make him like an orphan street tough yeah who is still attempting to steal the wheels off the batmobile and then he's found so yeah i think they were just like we'll get to grace and we'll get jason we'll mash them together we'll make him marlon wayans and then we'll make him the kid and then eventually he'll become robin but then they're like boy we've already got a giant duck we've already got some
Starting point is 01:22:18 sort of giant duck vehicle we've got people in the sewers maybe let let's just turf Robin and we'll do it again another time. And it's weird that the focus of this movie is like another clear, mentally disturbed, physically deformed human being running some kind of political scam. Right, uh-huh. Who Batman then beats up. Who Batman beats up and subsequently kills. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:22:39 Because in this one, he opens like a latch which bats fly out and knock the penguin. That's true, yeah. Through a glass window. But he gets up. Yeah. And then he's just like spitting black blood. Yes.
Starting point is 01:22:52 I remember seeing that because I didn't see this in the movies because I was pretty young. I remember being in the video store and watching that and just being like, what the hell is this? Yeah. I don't want to see this. This is horrifying. And then he just dies for no reason like he does there's no second confrontation he just walks up to batman and then he just drops dead that's right it's a metaphor for death yeah comes to us all even if you're even if you've won
Starting point is 01:23:18 the genetic lottery and you're some sort of weird flipper handed like real short fat man you're gonna die someday. What do you think of the- Make the most of the time you have. Run for mayor. Go on a weird duck float. Get some bloody penguins and strap some rocket packs to a water. Find some hidden treasure. That was the original plot.
Starting point is 01:23:37 It was going to be the penguin and cat woman teaming up to find some sort of hidden treasure under Gotham. It sounds better than mares and I don't know. And Batman, the way he discredits him, the Penguin's doing a speech and then Batman intercuts like the Penguin saying terrible things about people with a CD player. That's right. With a Batman-themed CD player.
Starting point is 01:23:57 And he even does a little record scratch. And people are standing there going, even though you can clearly see he's not saying it. Right, right, right. Yeah, and that's what gets Penguin offside with the people. Not the fact that he nearly tore a man's nose off in public. Look, maybe this movie isn't very good. Maybe.
Starting point is 01:24:15 Yeah. Maybe that's what I'm saying. Oh, sure. Yeah. Uh-huh. But you know what? Yes. As bad as this movie is, and some of the other one is,
Starting point is 01:24:25 like you said, at least we got the animated series out of it. That's very true. Which is a really faithful adaptation. And the Batman Returns PC adventure game. Your favourite game. It's pretty good. And Batman Returns on the Atari Lynx. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:24:36 Where if you win, you get a bonus 20,000 points. So good. And then you turn it off and it wipes your score. But you tell all your friends, though. What you do is you just keep the Lynx on, you keep it off and it wipes your score. But you tell all your friends, though. What you do is you just keep the links on. You keep it charged and you change the batteries. And then you take it to school with the congratulations screen on it. You show all your friends.
Starting point is 01:24:54 And then they know. That's too complicated. All you're going to do is get a roll of film. Yep. Take a photo of it. Get it developed. Wait until you take the photo for the rest of the roll of film. Finish the roll.
Starting point is 01:25:06 You don't want to waste your money your parents money that's true yeah then you you send you show your friends the photo with the high score and then you send it to like
Starting point is 01:25:15 some kind of Game Pro magazine just to show them you defeated you finally defeated it you got 10 points yeah I thought I'd have more to say about this but it's just a junk movie uh-huh and that they put more money into it but it made less money like
Starting point is 01:25:31 mcdonald's pulled out of like the happy meal can that's true oh you could have oh we could have got a little batman be a little little wind-up batman little wind-up duck yep little wind-up duck and people say like schumacher ruined the Batman movies. Yep. And he did. But those are very reactionary to what Burton did in this one. They were like, we need this to be more cartoony, more kid-friendly. We need to sell more toys. We need everything to glow.
Starting point is 01:25:56 Yep. I think Batman Forever is a better Batman movie than Batman Returns. Wow. And Batman Forever is not a good movie. No, I think it's the worst one, Batman Forever. Really? Yeah. Why? I don't like the Riddler.
Starting point is 01:26:13 No, I don't like him either. I don't like the characterization of the Riddler. I like Val Kilmer, actually. Okay, yeah. I think he looks the part. I think Nicole Kidman was a bit of a nothing character. Yeah, she was. You know what?
Starting point is 01:26:22 Maybe I'm wrong. You think you're probably wrong. No, because we were going to do the Schumacher ones, and then I said, well, I have to watch them again. Right, right, right. So we'll do that at some point. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:26:31 I don't know, man. Anything else? Let me think. Here's some facts. Okay. Hmm. Harvey Dent. The plan in the original script.
Starting point is 01:26:39 Yeah. Harvey Dent was going to be scarred by Catwoman at the end of the film. Just a scratch. Just a big old scratch to set up Batman forever. Never happened. At the end, Bruce was going to propose to Vicki Vale. Never happened because she was cut out completely. Yep.
Starting point is 01:26:53 Paul Reubens, Pee Wee Herman, we mentioned earlier, he was the Penguin's father at the start of the film. Yeah, that's true. Batman costume was lighter, but it was still like 50 pounds, so that's not... And still to get out of it, you had to tear the mask off like it's a fruit roll exactly yeah
Starting point is 01:27:06 they needed 60 Catwoman suits for the movie it looks like something you'd have to be sewn into she had to be vacuum sealed into it Jesus
Starting point is 01:27:15 yeah her boy she turns up at the start she's robbing a mall or when she first turns up and then she's like whipping heads off mannequins
Starting point is 01:27:23 that's right what's that about? I don't know. These movies are a mess. An amazing mess. They're definitely of their time. This one more so. I don't...
Starting point is 01:27:32 I am glad these ones exist. Why? I don't know. Yeah, I'm okay with it. It's just a weird dark retelling. It's just so... Batman Returns especially
Starting point is 01:27:43 feels like an Elseworlds. Yes. Like, imagine if Batman existed in, like... The worst universe. I was going to say more like an Artful Dodger, kind of Charles Dickens universe. It's definitely how it feels. That's true.
Starting point is 01:27:54 It's like people leaving orphans in drains. Yeah. Yeah, you're absolutely right. I don't know. I'm just glad for, like, to have this weird... I don't know. I'm glad to have this weird fairy tale version of Batman. Okay.
Starting point is 01:28:06 Don't know why. Even though it's completely unwatchable. Yeah. It's watchable. This one? It's somewhat watchable. Even returns. Batman 89 is very good.
Starting point is 01:28:16 Yeah. Okay. Sure. I'll give you that one. Yeah. I'll bloody give you that one, Mason. Should that be all we talk about for that one? These things?
Starting point is 01:28:23 Is there anything else we want to say? Because we'll never talk about it again or mention them we can't once we do an episode on a thing we can't bring it up we can't go back to it what I often do is
Starting point is 01:28:30 when we do an episode about something as soon as I leave I'll have many thoughts about it and then I'll just come back and I'll try and shoehorn him into the start of the next episode you'll often long time listeners will realise that
Starting point is 01:28:40 they'll be like there's another thing about Batman you'll bloody know so bloody look forward to that next week, everybody. That theme's pretty good. It's a good theme, right? Do you like the boat? The Batboat?
Starting point is 01:28:53 Yes. I love all his little gadgets. I love his vehicles. I do love his little gadgets, actually. He has some great gadgets in the first one especially. He's got the grappling hook thing with the gauntlets. It goes in both directions. The thing, when he actually, when he grapples the Joker,
Starting point is 01:29:08 I think it's bolos out of a gun. Could be a bolo gun. Like we said, he's got the thing where he hits a guy in the nuts. Yep, that's great. He's got the, I think kind of set the precedent for the gauntlets with the steel gauntlets. Yep, that are bulletproof, yeah. Because he can deflect swords as well.
Starting point is 01:29:22 When I was a kid, I had this Batman making of the movie book, so I should know more about these movies than I do, but I don't. He's got like Shuriken as well. Oh, really? He's got like ninja stars. Never see those. No, that's right. You never see them, and they're like they're made of steel
Starting point is 01:29:37 when you see them in the film, but they're made of fiberglass when you don't, and I'm like we never see them. What are they made of ever? I don't know. That's exactly it also batman's it's batman's utility belt in these movies has like and it's it's only you only ever see it like once or twice it's got like a like a chain pulley system in it what so if you see it very briefly there's a there's a moment where he needs like a gadget in particular and it like rotates from the back to the front. Really?
Starting point is 01:30:05 Yeah. That's why the front is such a clean look. Yeah. But there's moments where he's like, oh, he needs to add a bit to his grappling hook guy, and it just sort of rotates from the back. That's cool. Yeah, it's great.
Starting point is 01:30:17 I'm cool with that. Yeah, that's probably why I love these movies so much, gadgets. Belts. Belts. Shurikens. Little outfits. Secret shurikens. Secret shurikens you never see.
Starting point is 01:30:26 He never uses them. They're not very Batman-like, but he's got batarangs. Why would he use a shuriken? He doesn't have batarangs in this. No. Yeah. In the first one he does, though.
Starting point is 01:30:34 Batman 89? Yeah. He's got batarangs. When does he use them? They're like folding ones. They flip open. Oh, you know what? He has that remote control one in Return.
Starting point is 01:30:42 In Batman Returns, yeah. Where he can program a series of targets. Yeah. And then it hits them all and they all go down and presumably it delivers some sort of lethal dose of toxin because he's all about killing people. The red triangle gag. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:30:54 I remember thinking that was a cool aesthetic, like just men on stilts and breathing fire. See, there you go. See, I like the idea of this, again, this Charles Dickens world. Motorcycle skeletons. And it's like the 60s Batman where each villain had their own gang. That wasn't the penguins' gang, though. Yeah, I know, but I like the idea that there are probably other criminals out there.
Starting point is 01:31:13 Sure. Like maybe, I don't know. The Riddler. And also penguins with rockets on their backs. Yes. Very good. Which is, in a way, the most important thing to take from all this. I think so.
Starting point is 01:31:24 Yeah. Anyway, we talked about those, all this. I think so. Yeah. Anyway, we talked about those, didn't we? We did. Yeah. Should we move on to the next segment of the show? Yeah, let's move on to another segment. It's called Letters. No, it's not.
Starting point is 01:31:32 It's called What We Reading. Correct. What We Gotta Read. I'm doing the thing. What are we reading today? What are you reading this week? I'm reading, I read, re-read Kingdom Come. Sure, yeah.
Starting point is 01:31:51 It's a great Justice League tale from the mid-90s. I'm going to say late 90s, I think. I'm going to say any of those things. Great. I have no idea. And basically, it's kind of an Elseworlds future story where Superman's retired because the superheroes that kind of had shown up are now more extreme and cool
Starting point is 01:32:10 and the public demand that those are the superheroes they want and get out of here, Superman, with your bloody... You're too quaint and old. You're too quaint and old. Why don't you go and live in the Fortress of Solitude and grow a weird ponytail and make a farm in there or something? Yeah. Which is what he does yeah which is what he does
Starting point is 01:32:25 that's what it is what he does and these new superheroes though they kind of get out of hand they're not more they're more they're not about stopping crimes they're not just infighting infighting exactly to prove who's the coolest hero exactly uh-huh and they've got these awesome 90s kind of costumes but at the same time it's really kind of tacky and yeah there's a the main villain i guess is magog yeah who is who has later like variations of him have had his own series in the modern day and like he's made more appearances but he's very much he's he's very much cable yeah from x-men x-force that's it like he's got a bionic arm and he's got all sorts of pouches and he's got like a like an energy spear and all sorts of weird stuff
Starting point is 01:33:02 and isn't it that he ended up killing, no, he ended up killing the Joker. Correct. And then people were like, this is the guy we want, you know, someone who actually takes action, but then things get out of hand and Superman steps back in and is like, hey, fucking knock it off. Yeah. I mean, sorry about the language, but.
Starting point is 01:33:19 And then Batman comes, like, well, Batman's already been, he's been Batman-ing, like, remotely with drones because he's like an 80-year-old man or whatever. That's right, yeah. Yeah, and he's got, like, a, Batman's already been, he's been Batman-ing like remotely with drones because he's like an 80 year old man or whatever. That's right. Yeah. Yeah. And he's got like a neck brace bat suit. He has, he's had some sort of, I really enjoy that world.
Starting point is 01:33:33 Yeah. That we don't get the, you know, it's a potential future of the DC universe. We don't fully understand how he got to that point. Batman's clearly suffered some sort of massive injury. Yeah. So he can't be Batman anymore really so he's got these drones. The Flash has decided to protect
Starting point is 01:33:48 I think it's Central City or Keystone City but like he's devoted his life entirely to doing that. Like he's everywhere in the city at once.
Starting point is 01:33:57 Yeah. Like he can run through every point at the same time. Yeah. It's great. Because he's a lunatic. He's a lunatic. They're all lunatics.
Starting point is 01:34:04 Yeah. But yeah and it's Kingdom Come like it's such a great looking Oh it's It's Alex time. Yeah. It's great. Because he's a lunatic. They're all lunatics. Yeah. But yeah, and it's Kingdom Come, like, it's such a great looking. Oh, it's. It's Alex Ross. Yes. And it's a fully painted series. It's real, like, it's effort that you don't expect.
Starting point is 01:34:14 Yeah. And it's Alex Ross, you know, he's famous for, he'll pick, you know, he'll hire an actor who looks like, say, Captain Marvel. Yeah. Or Batman. Or, you know, and and he'll have sex with him yeah that's good you said that but he'll you know he'll any old have them cat you know in the pose that he wants him to do and they'll you know paint it based on
Starting point is 01:34:38 that yes I think yes you know there there are people who do paint from photo reference or just trace or just trace but any get a of the time, they're at the mercy of what... Like if they're like, I want a character that looks like this actor or whatever, they're at the mercy of still photos of what that actor looks like. And so a lot of the action looks very clunky. But Alex Ross is just like, okay, we want this character flying like this. Put him in the pose, paint it up. Take photos, paint it up.
Starting point is 01:35:02 Spectacular. Spectacular, yeah. He's good. I like what he's good i like what he's about yeah uh yeah it's if you haven't read it definitely give it a read there's also a sequel and a prequel i think one's called the kingdom yeah which i haven't actually read the kingdom you don't really need to read that's a prequel yeah uh no it's a sequel it's well that's a thing it's it involves time travel and it involves multiple parallel universes.
Starting point is 01:35:25 Brief, after Kingdom Come, the DC editorial decided they wanted to bring back an infinite number of Earths. Yes. But they couldn't be like, the infinite universe is back. So they had created something called Hypertime. And the kingdom was basically a means to illustrate that the multiple universes were back. And so it's kind of a mess. Well done. There are some elements that are good.
Starting point is 01:35:47 We see the son of Batman. That's pretty good. Okay. What's he like? I bet he's kind of an asshole. It's Damien Al Ghul. Oh, okay. So it's not Damien Wayne.
Starting point is 01:36:00 It's like an adult version of him. But it is actually Damien Wayne. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. But like, yeah, different name.
Starting point is 01:36:05 Okay. Yeah. All right. What did you read then? Well, I haven't been doing much reading because I've been doing comedy festival stuff. You love comedy festival. I love comedy festival stuff. I love all of it.
Starting point is 01:36:13 So I've been seeing a whole bunch of shows. What you seeing? What you gonna see? You know, I saw last night, I saw Susie Yusuf, friend of mine. She's from Sydney. Okay. She's an improviser and a comedian. She's doing an hour of standup.
Starting point is 01:36:23 Right. Her show is called Check Yourself Before You yourself before you wreck yourself it's a name she's very she's very clever um and it's basically a show about like uh you know is she a good person is the world a terrible place and it's very fun no it's great she's she's she's one of my absolute favorites i mean and as in is she a good person yeah she's great is the world a terrible place yeah it is yeah, there you go. You don't need to say it, guys. Yeah, great.
Starting point is 01:36:48 But there's sketches and there's stand-up. People have competed at Tina Fey. She's very funny. Oh, great. I also saw a woman named Michelle Bracia. She's doing a show called Space Tortoise, where she's a space tortoise. It was very fun. I had a really good time. So if you're in Melbourne, see some of these shows.
Starting point is 01:37:00 Just get out there and see a bloody show. See more than one. See ten. Michelle, a very good, great singer. She's also in. She makes a brief appearance, and you've of these shows. Just get out there and see a bloody show. See more than one. See 10. Michelle, a very good, great singer. She's also in, she makes a brief appearance, and you've seen these before, sketch group Aunty Donna. Love them.
Starting point is 01:37:11 They have a series called 1999. It's on YouTube. It is, and it's set in an office in 1999. Couple of babies with the boys. Absolutely. I love it. I ran into Zach, who's in Aunty Donna. Which one's he?
Starting point is 01:37:22 He has the very long hair. Yep, yep. And the facial. And he said that, he was, I said, oh, I love in Auntie Donna. Which one's he? He has the very long hair. Yep, yep. And the facial. And he said that he was, I said, oh, I love Auntie Donna. I love, you know, your 1999 sketches. And he's like, a friend of mine was very excited to find out that I know you and you do the weekly plan. And I'm like, he has to get his priorities straight.
Starting point is 01:37:40 So, yeah. Because they put actual effort into things. They do, yeah. They're great. So everybody should check that out as well. I love the long arm touchy that's what I told him touchy Tim
Starting point is 01:37:47 melted my mind when I saw it I told him he's very appreciative he said thank you say you're welcome we've just seen it again okay
Starting point is 01:37:55 alright do you know what it's time for no I don't hang on this is the segment of the show let's talk more about how good Aunty Donna are they're great
Starting point is 01:38:04 they're great I They're great. I like other things. I've seen other shows at the Comedy Festival. I have this show called Chimp Cop. Yes. I haven't seen it yet. It premiered last night, but it's called Chimp Cop Nights because last year they did a show called Chimp Cop.
Starting point is 01:38:16 Yeah. It's like a very Naked Gun style sketch show about Chimp Cop. It's very, last year, probably my favorite show of last year, like kind of, like in terms of just laughs per minute, just dumb, just dumb jokes.
Starting point is 01:38:33 Yeah. You know, back to back to back. Love it. Probably my favorite, turning the volume up, probably, probably my favorite show. So I haven't seen it yet but uh
Starting point is 01:38:47 i'll see that's strike three i reckon it'll be really great anyway now it's time for letters is it it's loading oh another seamless They're only a day away You're going to hear right now, we're going to do letters. Another seamless letter section. We did it. Courtesy of internet celebrity Nick Mason. That's me. Alright, here's our Rebirth letter.
Starting point is 01:39:14 Remember I said we'd talk about Rebirth? Yep. This is from Derek on Twitter. That's right, DC Rebirth. What do you think of the DC Rebirth? I don't know anything about it. I can explain some things for you. Please tell me about it okay so basically dc uh is
Starting point is 01:39:25 intending to restore their universe to what it was prior to flashpoint okay but also in cap incorporate elements of the new 52 i'm not sure of the specifics how they're going to do this but like they've got a new team on a bunch of different books including new people for batman greg rucker is returning to wonder woman okay And one of the biggest things that's happening in the Justice League book, they're going to reveal the origin of the Joker. Oh, yeah. I did hear about that. And people are losing their minds.
Starting point is 01:39:53 Good. Which is fair enough. Yeah. I'm not sure. I mean, we already know he's Jack Napier. He's the man that killed Batman's parents. I'm not sure that... I watched an interview with Geoff Johns
Starting point is 01:40:05 and it sounds like it's not as straightforward as This is his origin? Yeah Right, okay I don't know whether it's going to be ambiguous or Right, because Something else A few months ago
Starting point is 01:40:17 Yeah We had another potential origin for the Joker Yes Which was that he's been around for centuries Yeah Because he was exposed to some of the chemicals that make up the Lazarus Pit, which make Ra's al Ghul immortal.
Starting point is 01:40:31 So great. Yeah, so very convenient. And so he was around for the formation of Gotham City. Maybe he's had some machinations that have made the city what it is kind of thing. Yeah, turns out that wasn made the city what it is kind of thing. But yeah. Turns out that wasn't the case. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:40:47 But so yeah, because a few issues ago in Justice League, Batman sat down in the big new God's chair. That's right. And he asked what the Joker was and then the chair told him. And he's like, it's not possible. Jack Napier. No. I don't even know who that guy is really.
Starting point is 01:41:05 So it will be interesting to see what it is, if it's a definitive origin where it's like, it's this guy called Fred and he was a plumber and now he's like, no, you don't do that. Here's the thing though. They're just going to reboot it again. No, it doesn't matter. It doesn't make any difference.
Starting point is 01:41:20 They just rebooted it to New 52, didn't they? And then Flashpoint before that. Yeah. And then bloody Infinite. No, Flashpoint led to the New 52. Oh, okay, right. But then the bloody Infinite Crisis and bloody Zero Hour. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:41:34 They're just going to keep doing it. They seem to be getting shorter and shorter the time they're over. Yeah, the time frame is shrinking. Yeah. Now, you didn't get on board with a lot of the New 52 stuff. No, I didn't, no. So this restoring of the old timeline, is that going to didn't get on board with a lot of the new 52 stuff. No, I didn't, no. So this restoring of the old timeline, is that going to get you back on board?
Starting point is 01:41:49 Because they're doing everything you want and more or less. Let's find out. That does sound very appealing. I don't know if it will. Because I think it's going to be three years and they're going to reboot it again. Yeah. Why do I?
Starting point is 01:42:02 Probably less. Yeah. Probably six months. Probably six months. Yeah. Why do I? Probably less. Yeah. Probably six months. Probably six months. Yeah. Oh, boy. Pretty good. So, in summary, Mason doesn't like it, and I'm indifferent.
Starting point is 01:42:11 Look, I'm going to give... You know what? I'll give the first... I'll do the runner number ones. I'll see how complicated it seems. Yep. And I'll see how much they're relying on the previous continuity. Right. You know what?
Starting point is 01:42:25 I'm going to go in it as if I've never read a DC comic before. Spoiler alert, he hasn't. That's right. He's been reading Wikipedia synopsis every week. This whole time. Marvel fanboy. But I'll see some of the number ones, and I'll see how much sense it makes.
Starting point is 01:42:39 Are they going to be rebooting? What about Superman doesn't have powers, Batman is Jim Gordon? No. Actually, they just wrapped up the Batman is Jim Gordon thing. Okay, right. So, yeah. going to be rebooting what about superman doesn't have a power as batman is jim gordon no that actually they just wrapped up the batman is jim gordon thing okay right so yeah he's batman back in a big way in a big way oh very good yeah it was uh i didn't love the the jim gordon batman run to be honest i liked all the other stuff but that not as much yeah once he got out of the power suit yeah you know he's just jim gordon he's the guy who's not as athletic as batman and older yeah yeah i've got another letter here oh by the way you can uh if you hashtag weekly planet pod on twitter it's the best way to get in contact with us or you can shoot us a gmail to weekly
Starting point is 01:43:13 planet pod but twitter's probably the way to go um this is from uh i haven't got the name here i'm sorry uh with batman v superman being lackluster to many, do you think Suicide Squad can restore faith in the DC movie franchise? I think it definitely can. I'm bloody banking on it. Look, I think it could very well be an excellent movie, but, Rishi is notwithstanding, but I don't think it's going to rebuild my faith
Starting point is 01:43:40 in the universe as a whole. Because, again, without spoiling batman v superman yeah there's gonna be some there's gonna be some characterization issues that they're gonna have to fix in the and i don't know if they will or they're gonna gloss over it or they're gonna you know either way you're not happy i yeah i feel bbs like put out some tentacles yes they're gonna have to fight back with a flying thrower. You know what I mean? Like the thing. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:44:10 I feel like that we're going to get some good solo stuff. I'm not confident in the new Justice League movie anymore. No, not at all. Yeah. Well, you know, you never know. I'm not. I feel like, because a lot of, I say I feel like there's a lot, but a lot of Batman Superman is reactionary to Man of Steel.
Starting point is 01:44:29 And I think Justice League is going to be very reactionary to Batman Superman. Right, okay. And it's just going to keep. Eventually we'll find a balance or they'll just reboot the universe. Yeah, that's it. Yeah. And last email or questions from Adil
Starting point is 01:44:38 asked about a Q&A video. When's that out? Well, we're hoping to do it this week. So what it was, we are raising some money for... UNICEF. UNICEF, that's right. Let me just bring up the page, see where we're at. We're basically...
Starting point is 01:44:52 I can't find it. It's gone. Do you have the page? I'll find it. I don't have it in my bloody browser. Oh, boy. Oh, there we go. Okay, cool.
Starting point is 01:45:02 It was Everyday Hero, the website for UNICEF. But yeah, we're looking to raise some money. Give away some Star Wars Blu-ray, some comic here we go. Okay, cool. It was Everyday Hero, the website for UNICEF. But yeah, we're looking to raise some money, give away some Star Wars Blu-rays, some comic bento boxes, and do a Q&A. So everybody gets a Q&A who's involved. We're nearly at $24,000. That's amazing.
Starting point is 01:45:17 I know, because things will be won at $1,500. That's more. I know. And everybody who enters, no matter what, gets this Q&A, which we'll go for about an hour, and we're going to answer some of the questions we got in. Some burning questions that people want to know. That's right. That people have answered.
Starting point is 01:45:30 People have asked. So we can't answer them all because there's a few thousand here. Oh, boy. But again, some of them are... There's some overlap. Yeah. Well, here's one from BLT right at the top here. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:45:42 How long do you think you guys would last as actual superheroes? Like how long? Depends what we got. Like if I'm Batman, I'm dead. Night one, I'm dead. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. What about you?
Starting point is 01:45:52 Well, we'll answer it in the Q&A. Oh, yeah. That's a red hot one for Q&A, I feel. I think that's more like- If we remember it. I think that's more like how many funny ways would we die if we were given any form of superpower? That's right.
Starting point is 01:46:03 So I'll try and get this out. We'll try and get it recorded this week. So I'm hoping, if not next weekend, early next week, I'll get it out. There's still time to donate if you want to donate. Yeah. And then I'll release kind of details on how people can access that if you've taken part in it. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:46:21 Yay. Love it. All right. So that's the show for this week. That's the show. Can I recommend some more Comedy Festival shows? Ah, Mason, you've had your chance. No, I just want to bloody overwhelm people with information
Starting point is 01:46:28 so when they get to the board, they won't understand. My friend Peter Jones has a show. It's called This Show May Be Recorded for Quality Purposes. Very good. And it's about him working in various offices. It's very funny. I saw that the other night. Nice.
Starting point is 01:46:40 Let me see. My friend Becky Lucas has a show. She's great. She's from Sydney. Laura Davis is a friend of mine. She's got a show. She's great. She's from Sydney. Laura Davis is a friend of mine. She's got a show called Marco Polo. It's very fun. I like that one a lot.
Starting point is 01:46:53 That'll do it. Everybody else can get stuff. Did you see the Michael Williams Trapped Under a Boulder show? Yes, I did. It's great. Was it really good? It's really, really good. I'm going to go see that.
Starting point is 01:47:01 That's finishing up tonight. Well, I'm not going to see it then. If you somehow were listening into this as we record it you can probably see it god damn it yeah
Starting point is 01:47:08 also I've got a guy you know Rose Matafeo from New Zealand she's very funny good very good good Mason
Starting point is 01:47:13 that's all I have I put out the call for an editor which I'm still going through all the emails that I've got I've got a person
Starting point is 01:47:20 called Ben who's working on some kill count stuff for me at the moment one of them which will be out I think by now. And he's really great.
Starting point is 01:47:27 I might be looking at a few other people to do some other kind of things as well. Because I'm still going through some emails as well and talking with some people. But basically, if you want to go check out his work, he's at Ocean Sparks on YouTube if you type in Ocean Sparks. And he's one of the people to let you know that his content's like different than what kind of we do. He has like vlog stuff. He's a student like living in Europe, studying film and stuff.
Starting point is 01:47:51 So yeah, you should definitely check out his work. But you'll see his work on the channel of my YouTube channel. Yes. So yeah, he did a really good kill count, which I always spoil here, but he bloody nailed it. Excellent. That's good to know. It's better than what I could do, if not more so.
Starting point is 01:48:04 Oh, do you think it'll inspire another film that isn't very good? I think that's what might happen. I bloody hope not. Yeah. How dare he pin that on me? Son of a bitch, Zack Snyder. All right, let's drive it this week. Yeah, we did it.
Starting point is 01:48:18 God damn it. I wanted to go much less than two hours and we didn't. God damn it, Mason. There's so much to say about Batman films, though. Yeah, there is. What do you want to do next week? Mostly us going back and forth going, is it good? It's not good.
Starting point is 01:48:30 No, it was good. Nah, bad. What do you want to do next week? I'll check if there's any movies out. I'm just typing in movies out this week. Okay. Everybody wants some. No.
Starting point is 01:48:39 God's not dead. No. Apparently everyone wants some. It's good. Natural born pranksters, which is YouTube's best pranksters, have a movie out. God damn it. YouTube pranks are the worst.
Starting point is 01:48:49 They're worth some bloody trailer breakdown videos. And that is saying something. I don't know. We'll think of something. Love it. We won't do the other Batman movies next week. Too much Batman. Too much Batman.
Starting point is 01:49:00 It's for Batman haters like us. Yeah. DC non-fanboys. Very upsetting. So we'll not do that. Yeah. Hey, see my friends Ben Russell and Xavier Michaelides For Batman haters like us, DC non-fanboys are very upsetting, so we'll not do that. Hey, see, my friends Ben Russell and Xavier Michaelides have a show called No Show. It's about they're two veteran comedy performers,
Starting point is 01:49:14 and it's the opening night of their show, and no one's purchased a ticket. Only one of them realizes it, so they have to trick the other one into thinking that there's an audience. It's very funny. It's like Waiting for godot um but with boner jokes anyway it's real good you should say everybody should say that i will say it good yeah that sounds super cool where can people find us oh we're at weekly planet pod on gmail and
Starting point is 01:49:35 facebook and twitter if you want to send us a tweet that's right or an email or a text yep i'm at wikipedia you can do that yeah uh i'm at wikipedia brown on twitter i'm at Wikipedia. You can do that. I'm at Wikipedia Brown on Twitter. I'm at MrSundayMovies. Patreon.com slash MrSundayMovies. Yeah. You can check that if you want. We've got an Amazon affiliate link that I always forget about. Oh, yeah. I've got to work out how to get the money out of that.
Starting point is 01:49:52 It's in our description there if you want to click on that. If you want to buy anything from Amazon, like you're going to do anyway, just click that and we get a little kickback somehow. We assume. I don't know how. I got an email saying we can't send you the money because you haven't entered details. Oh, okay.
Starting point is 01:50:04 So it might go nowhere. Might go into the void. Regardless, it doesn't cost anything. Any more than usual. Yeah. Exactly. What else? We have t-shirts.
Starting point is 01:50:11 We do. We keep thinking about that. Our friend Golden Legend creates some wonderful t-shirts that are in red bubble. Search for his name, Golden Legend, all one word. That's right. And that awesome He-Man t-shirt. Remember that one? That's so good.
