Starting point is 00:00:55 This podcast is part of the Planet Broadcasting Network. Visit planetbroadcasting.com for more podcasts from our great mates. Welcome back everybody to another episode of the Weekly Planet where we talk movies and comics and TV shows. My name is James, also known as Mr. Sunday. With me as always is my co-host, Nick Mason. I got home at 6am this morning. You think you're pretty cool, don't you? Yeah, I'm a cool guy.
Starting point is 00:01:25 You're the number one party boy. We all know that. That's what they tell me. But. No one's ever told me that. I bet they have. Is your rock and roll lifestyle catching up with you? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:01:34 Look at the bags under these eyes. No, they were always there. Yeah, I look for it. Oh, come on. I thought that was going to be a compliment and it wasn't. No, you look great. No, they're always there. Well, you do look great for somebody who's had
Starting point is 00:01:45 like four hours sleep. Thank you. And you have to do an episode on every Marvel movie. Oh, yeah. Well, they're all in here. They're ingrained into my brain. They've taken the space
Starting point is 00:01:55 of everything, everything else. That's right. Memories of loved ones. That's lucky, isn't it? Important phone numbers. It's just Marvel movies. Who remembers phone numbers?
Starting point is 00:02:02 I remember the phone numbers of kids I went to school with in primary school. Like their home phone numbers? Wow, okay. So if you want to chat with their mum or dad at any moment. Presuming anybody's still there or alive. Yeah. All right, Mason, we've got our charity campaign kicking off this week.
Starting point is 00:02:17 We do. Well, it's already been kicking off, but this is when we kick it off. The Weekly Planet gives back after a year of taking and taking and taking. That's right. So the idea is the first year we did... when we kick it off the weekly planet gives back after a year of taking and taking and taking right so the idea is uh the first year we did something didn't we we sure did but the second year we did men's mental health through movember that's right uh we raised forty thousand dollars which was crazy good crazy and this year we're looking at care australia which is it's not it's an australian organization but it's actually a, it helps benefits globally.
Starting point is 00:02:46 That's right. So your money's not going to just Australians because who would want that? No. We're only going to spend it on beer and durries, aren't we? That's it, exactly.
Starting point is 00:02:54 So the idea is, this campaign, it's specifically for empowering women and girls through four key criteria. I bet you don't even know what those four things are. I don't,
Starting point is 00:03:03 but I've got them written down. Okay, good. Here we go. Education education so caring for a lifetime of learning health water and sanitation for supporting healthy lives you'd be shocked that how many people don't have clean water or maybe you don't i think that statistic is quite well known it's it's not a lot of people uh food security in terms of uh aiming to end hunger and emergency crisis support. So caring for families in emergencies. A lot of the money will go towards the Syrian refugee campaign. It's not a campaign.
Starting point is 00:03:33 What's the word? Crisis. That's a better word for that. Yeah. And the idea is by supporting women and girls, you're boosting everybody. The same way we did Movember, you support men, you raise everybody up. That's the idea. But you don't just have to donate, Mason.
Starting point is 00:03:46 Okay. I mean, you can donate. Okay. I've linked the page below. It says here our goal is $100,000. That's probably not going to happen. That's going to look ridiculous at the end when we don't do that. But we'd be great to do.
Starting point is 00:04:00 Did you just not look at the keyboard and just type numbers until one came up? This is all Claire sorting this out. So yeah, like she did last year. She's killing it. That is bold, but maybe we can do it. But the idea is when you donate, you get the opportunity to ask a question. And like last year, me and Mason will do a Q&A together just for people who donated. We will answer up to 100,000 questions.
Starting point is 00:04:19 Correct. That's right. And also, I think I said this in my Facebook Live Q&A thing. Knox did one last week, by the way. Yeah, that's right. I also, I think I said this in my Facebook Live Q&A thing. Knox did one last week, by the way. Yeah, that's right. Check that out. That we might do a little tour. Like we might be like, hey, this is where we sit. Oh, nice.
Starting point is 00:04:32 I mean, it's not going to be very exciting. But if you want to see that. It's certainly not going to be long. No. Well, maybe I'll share the space where we're going to have a new studio at some point. Okay, great. Yeah. Maybe I can show where we sleep.
Starting point is 00:04:44 Yeah, the inside of your car. That's right. What do you want to see? You want to see a car that's got Sultanas all over the floor? I can show you that. You want to look
Starting point is 00:04:51 in a medicine cabinet? What are the Sundays taken? We'll tell you. We'll show you. Don't even worry about it. That's it. Now, this is only available to people who donate
Starting point is 00:05:00 the bonus stuff. And we're not the only ones doing bonus stuff. I know Tofop are going to do a bonus thing. Any of the podcasts are welcome to, you welcome to throw up an extra bit of content. It might be a bonus episode or something they've already got on Bandcamp that they want to put up. So there'll be a bunch of stuff that you can see for free by donating. If we get to 100,000, if we don't, everything gets burnt down. Just to clarify. Yeah, I've made that comment.
Starting point is 00:05:22 So we'll do a video where we go through all your stuff and burn it down individually. Wow. Yeah, yeah. Well, this is the stakes are high for this one. I eat everything in my medicine cabinet and then we burn everything down. Wow. Yeah. Wow.
Starting point is 00:05:34 But that's linked below. It's done really well the past two years. Yes. And we'd love to kind of keep that going. All thanks to the wickily or wackity-doos. Absolutely it is. It's through people like you. Not you, Mason.
Starting point is 00:05:46 Ah. People like the dog like the dog and the people listening yeah so that's very exciting me too wait I thought you said look
Starting point is 00:05:53 I've been awake a very short amount of I was awake for a very long amount of time then there was a brief moment of blackness and now I'm awake again so
Starting point is 00:06:02 that's me everyday baby yeah but you probably had a few bevvies am i right i've had a couple of bevvies that seems a couple of cheeky bevs yeah so again all that's linked below it's going to be running for a few months i'd imagine uh get in while you can i will good mason hello speaking of supporting women and girls, but the opposite of that. Yes. Alison Mack, who starred in the TV series Smallville. Smallville as Chloe. That's right. Yes. Your favorite show and character.
Starting point is 00:06:31 Disagree on all counts. She recruited women, it seems, to be in a female mentorship group, which turned out to be a cult run by some fucking piece of shit. You're putting quote marks around there but i don't think that's what the article says no it's not uh the victims were exploited but sexually and for their labor uh to the defendant's benefit so yeah don't do that obviously what are you doing that for yeah i'm glad your boyfriend jimmy olsen died quite frankly what is that's madness right absolutely it is i, it's not the weirdest thing that's come out of Hollywood,
Starting point is 00:07:06 but it's not entirely shocking. Is it the worst thing that's come out of Smallville? Yes. I agree. Yeah. Michael Rosenbaum's got a great podcast. That's true. I mean, the ending's not great, but the ending is better than this.
Starting point is 00:07:17 Yes, for sure. Yes. I mean, it seems like a pyramid scheme of just exploiting women is what kind of happened here, and she was used as kind of a recruitment person. Anyway, that's terrible. And she's a terrible person. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:30 And everybody involved in that is obviously terrible. So fuck all you. I hope you all go to jail for a very long time. Bloody hell. Yeah. Do you want some better news, Mason? You could, yeah. I mean, it's only better by comparison.
Starting point is 00:07:41 I wouldn't necessarily call this good news. Oh, it's just news. You know what? It is good news. All, it's just news. You know what? It is good news. All right, we'll see. It was announced that the collective, the H Collective and Vin Diesel's studio, production studio, One Race Films have... I'm sorry.
Starting point is 00:07:56 No, that's been mentioned before, but it is called One Race Films. Okay. All right. Yeah. And the race is Swathe Egg. Okay, I was going to say. That's the race. Because he seems like he's multi-ethnic.
Starting point is 00:08:09 Yes, exactly. Maybe that's what it is. Maybe that's what it is, yeah. They've acquired the rights to the XXX film franchise from Revolution Studios. So later this year, XXX4 is going to go into production. They should call it 4X like the beer. Yeah, absolutely.
Starting point is 00:08:24 They should, yeah. But to be honest, I'm very excited for this. Me too. 4 is going to go into production they should call it 4x like the beer yeah absolutely yeah but to be honest i'm very excited for this me too because the last one was seemingly terrible but the more i think about it the more i really enjoyed that yeah it's not good no by any metric no but except by the metric of surprise ice cube cameos correct in which case it is great if you love a gross coat if you love an egg in a, if you love a weird explosion where a guy jumps out of a plane and it's got a weird... I don't know what perspective that is.
Starting point is 00:08:51 Fish-eyed lens as an egg in a vest jumps out of an exploding plane. If you love Vin Diesel just fighting a bunch of people in a weird water town. Remember that? Sort of. Just a weird boat town. He was fighting everybody. Is that where he skied down the mountain?
Starting point is 00:09:07 Yeah That was earlier I think But look it doesn't matter If you love all those things That's right If you love a crack team of specialists That might include Somebody who's pretty good at soccer
Starting point is 00:09:17 A DJ Others probably If you love a scene right at the start where two men are very obviously killed by a missile strike like in a way that there's no way they would have survived but at the end they have survived i think they're dating they seem like they're dating samuel jackson and the other guy yeah yeah probably it's a very close relationship and they obviously went through some stuff together yeah maybe i don't know i think they should. Yeah. So that's exciting, isn't it? Yes.
Starting point is 00:09:49 So if you love garbage films that are quite funny, that aren't as good as the Fast and Furious films. Who was the villain in that? Was it Muriel from Muriel's Wedding? It was, I think, yeah. But there was probably some henchmen as well. Some generic henchmen, yeah. No, wasn't there another guy? There was an MMA guy.
Starting point is 00:10:02 Yeah, right. Of course there's an MMA guy. There's an MMA guy in Muriel for Muriel's wedding. Tony Collette. That's it. Correct. The MMA thing is like get a guy who used to be in Gladiators. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:10:13 Of 2018. Do you remember Vulcan? Yeah, I remember Vulcan. From Australian Gladiators, yes. From Australian Gladiators, yeah. Do you want to bring that mic a little closer, Mason? As if I'd forget Vulcan. From Australian gladiators.
Starting point is 00:10:27 Anyway, this looks great. I mean... Conceptually, it's great. Yes, correct. Here's something that I do genuinely think looks great. There was a new Deadpool trailer, a final trailer. It's very meta. They're mentioned in Thanos.
Starting point is 00:10:38 They're mentioned in the dark DC films of the DC universe. Apparently, all that is not necessarily going to be in the final film. Yeah, for sure. Because he's wearing a mask, so you can just make him say literally anything. That's true, yeah. Yeah. And it reintroduces us to some characters,
Starting point is 00:10:54 Bedlam, Shatterstar, Domino. I didn't know Domino's powers were luck. I had no idea. Yeah, it is, yeah. Okay. There's two Marvel characters whose powers are luck. One's Longshot and the other's Domino. Okay.
Starting point is 00:11:07 What happens if they get in an elevator together and they punch up? That's a good question. I don't know. But like, there's different levels of luck. Okay. So like, if, let's say, like, Domino fell off the side of a building. Yeah. She would land, like, she would bounce off the least dangerous part.
Starting point is 00:11:22 Like, she would hit a fire escape and then fall or whatever. Or like all the angles would work out and she'd hit the ground and be fine. But Longshot would fall off a building and like a mattress truck would appear. Right. And he'd fall into the mattress truck. Okay. So he'd win in the elevator. Probably he would win, yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:38 Yeah, okay. How is Luck a mutation? Yeah, I don't know. A lot of, yeah, I mean one she's like i mean but but you could say that about most mutant powers like how does somebody how does somebody accidentally mutate and gain the power to travel through time it's a good point you know yeah it is a good point i mean i get like reading people's minds because that seems like i guess a natural progression no the only the only realistic mutation is probably wolverine but even then that's like somebody like somebody yeah it's well
Starting point is 00:12:12 i mean realistically it's somebody with like an extra thumb sure yeah that they get cut off at birth yes exactly yeah but they still show up at all the mutant meetings yeah that's right whenever there's an x-men recruitment drive they're like hey um yeah i've i had an extra thought i don't i don't anymore but i mean if you look at if i'll here's my x-rays you can see a little stub speaking of my the best part of this speaking of people with no mutant power surprising appearance at the end as of comedian rob delaney yeah catastrophe fame as just a guy with no powers who just answered an ad. I don't know how long
Starting point is 00:12:47 he's going to be in this movie. I don't know if this is... I feel like a lot of them are going to get wiped out. Yeah, yeah. But I think maybe he'll make it though. Oh, maybe, yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:56 I enjoy that a lot. Yeah. You're a Rob Delaney fan? Yeah, absolutely. Yeah. And we get the first appearance of Shatterstar. Yes.
Starting point is 00:13:04 Looking absolutely ridiculous. Yeah, absolutely.atterstar. Yes. Looking absolutely ridiculous. Yeah, absolutely. Pink ponytail. Yes. All white. Costume with the big hockey mask face thing. So good. Looks great.
Starting point is 00:13:14 It's my favorite thing. Weird hook swords. Yeah, man. So good. It's the 90s again. Sort of. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:21 I'm not aware of who Bedlam is. I don't know who Bedlam is. I mean, I know it's Terry Crews. So that's good. He's a strong-ish guy. Great. I did a video on who Bedlam is. I don't know who Bedlam is. I mean, I know it's Terry Crews. Yeah. So that's good. He's like a strong-ish guy. I did a video on it a while back. Okay, cool. You can look it up or just Wikipedia.
Starting point is 00:13:30 I could Wikipedia, yeah. And listen to me go, this is a character in a movie. Oh, nails on a chalkboard. Now I understand. I like the nod to the X-Men Origins Wolverine where he's trying to block all the bullets. That was fun, yeah. And he just gets riddled. I enjoy that a lot. And there's a bit where he makes C to block all the bullets. That was fun, yeah. And he just gets riddled. I enjoy that a lot.
Starting point is 00:13:45 And there's a bit where he makes Cable look at his balls. That is true, yeah. So 100%. Also, there's a little bit of Cable telekinesis. He seems to have some. When he grabs the gun? Gun out of the gun. I thought that might have been a metal arm thing.
Starting point is 00:13:59 Oh, maybe. Sure, it might be magnetic. Could very well be, yeah. Does he have telekinesis, telekinesis, or like electronic telekinesis? He has telekinesis, telekinesis. Oh, telekinesis, telekinesis. Yeah have telekinesis, telekinesis, or like electronic telekinesis? He has telekinesis, telekinesis. Oh, telekinesis, telekinesis. Yeah, telekinesis, telekinesis. I think this is the best trailer they've released.
Starting point is 00:14:13 Of all time? Yeah, definitely. Yeah, for sure. Well, we're going to get to some more trailers that might even beat it. But of the Deadpool 2 trailers, this is my favorite. This is very good, yeah. Yeah, it's quite fun and funny. So high hopes for this, Mason.
Starting point is 00:14:24 It's only out in like two weeks as well. Who's the... We also get Megasonic. Yes. And who's the other lady, the new lady? Is it Psylocke? Oh. Yeah, it might be Psylocke.
Starting point is 00:14:35 Do we have Psylocke recently? We had Psylocke in X-Men Apocalypse. Oh, was it? Oh, yeah. She could cut a... It couldn't be. It might not be. No.
Starting point is 00:14:43 Yeah, I also heard that the last X-Men film that's going to be under Fox, if this deal goes through, which it probably will, is that X-Men Dark Phoenix or whatever it's called. Oh, yeah. And that'll be it. Right. Cool. Fun.
Starting point is 00:14:55 Yes. I can't wait for that. End on a high. That's what I say. Yeah, exactly. End on a high or a middling. Yeah, that's it. Who's to say?
Starting point is 00:15:02 Yeah. But no, looks good. The Knee Brothers. You familiar with them? No. They did 2015... Wait, that's it. Who's to say? Yeah. But no, looks good. The Knee Brothers. You familiar with them? No. They did 2015. Wait, wait, wait. Are these just your knees?
Starting point is 00:15:09 Is this a thing? Is this a bit you're doing? Are you familiar with the Knee Brothers? And then you raise your knees above the desk and they've got faces drawn on them. Yeah, it's got those little smiley faces. Hello. One's got a goatee. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:20 Very good. No, no. They directed the indie film Band of Robbers in 2015, which is apparently quite good. Anyway, they're working on, they're going to direct Masters of the Universe. Because Hollywood is all about getting two minor indie directors and then getting them together to direct a big budget film.
Starting point is 00:15:36 Which worked once. Which worked one time. Another time they did it with the Han Solo film and they got fired. I'm sure there are other examples. Yeah. But they put all these in the pipe before that happened. The Russo brothers knocked it out of the park and then just like, get some brothers,
Starting point is 00:15:51 get some brothers in, put them all in, give all the brothers a movie. The Mario brothers, are they real? Yeah, get them on the phone. Get them on the pipeline. Does that work? Yeah. I don't know if it does.
Starting point is 00:16:04 Get them off the pipe. There we go. Make. I don't know if it does. Get them off the pipe. There we go. Make them productive members of society again. Do you think that's going to... The Smothers Brothers. What are they again? Are they comedians? Give them the movie.
Starting point is 00:16:12 The Blues Brothers. Which ones are alive? Get them. I re-watched the Blues Brothers recently. Did you like it? Yes. It's a good film though, isn't it? It's good.
Starting point is 00:16:19 Have you watched the sequel? No. Yeah. You should watch it as a follow-up. I won't. It's probably an animated series. You should watch that. I fired up the... It was on Netflixflix so i fired up the blues brothers and it opens with a scene like a like a helicopter shot of chicago and it's very dark and grim and gritty
Starting point is 00:16:33 and there's like chimneys and fires coming out of the chimneys or whatever and i'm like i don't remember this bit at all have i got the right movie did you put on blade runner no this it is the right movie but the version I watched as a kid like 50 times, clearly I started taping after that. So I have no memory of that little bit. I bet your parents cut it out because they didn't think you could handle it. Fire, because I feared fire as a child. You feared fire as a child, yeah, absolutely.
Starting point is 00:16:57 Everybody fears fire. You should. It's very dangerous. Anyway, good film. Good film. A lot of wanton destruction for no reason. Sure. Was it the biggest car crash thing of all time maybe maybe it uh there's a there's a car chase in a
Starting point is 00:17:10 in a mall yeah and there's so much unnecessary smashing like there's there's like the like the police cars just smash through one entrance of a shop front and then smash straight out of it again and you're like they clearly could have made that turn yeah the director just wanted to smash up his shop front john landis john landis he was kind of yeah he was on the up and up until those kids got killed in that horrible accident oh yeah that jesus and him and spielberg stopped talking and it was a whole thing anyway wikipedia well it was spielberg's kids that's yeah yeah'll get you. Anyway, those guys, the Nee brothers, they're directing Masters of the Universe. Did I say that?
Starting point is 00:17:49 Yeah, you did. Yeah, you sure did. I like this. I like it better than David Goya. What was their previous movie called? Band of Robbers. I haven't seen it. Okay, right.
Starting point is 00:17:56 Does that contain any fantastical elements? I don't believe so. Or special effects? Yeah, it sounds like a... Sounds like a... Sounds like a safety not guaranteed situation. Sounds like a teeny weeny little heist movie, doesn't it? It certainly does. Yeah, it sounds like a safety not guaranteed situation. Sounds like a teeny weeny little heist movie, doesn't it? It certainly does.
Starting point is 00:18:08 Yeah, it's got a... Who's in this movie? I don't know anybody's in this. No, that's... Why not Mason? Why not get some... Do you think it's going to get to a point where they might get like a brother and sister and then maybe three brothers and then just a family director?
Starting point is 00:18:22 Just a family director, yeah. Wow. I think, no. has that not happened? Has there never been like a John Landis, Max Landis? I'm not specifically, but has there ever been like? I do know that this, well, this probably isn't happening now, but Max Landis was going to direct the American Werewolf in London reboot. Right.
Starting point is 00:18:39 But he's in the toilet at the moment. For sure. So you just have to, I'd be surprised if that happens anytime soon. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, he's very quiet on Twitter the moment. For sure. So you just have to, I'd be surprised if that happens anytime soon. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, he's very quiet on Twitter these days. A whole family. Then a family of squirrels can direct a movie. Maybe the secret squirrel reboot that I've always been hoping for.
Starting point is 00:18:57 A family chain of restaurants like a Sizzler. Yes. Just go all out, mate. Masters of the universe though god remember remember sizzler we don't have sizzler anymore
Starting point is 00:19:08 they took them off is there really oh it's like in perth or something something like that yeah but just like
Starting point is 00:19:15 there's one pizza hut left like an actual pizza hut yeah right you can get pizzas god i miss it guys if you have
Starting point is 00:19:19 any positive if you have any positive sizzler experience recently just just or you just take a photo and send it to us i'd love it if you're going there word of advice don't eat the cheese bread up top because it
Starting point is 00:19:30 fills you up and then you can get less ice cream into you yeah that's true let's expand it's like eating a mattress it's so true so just be careful yeah somebody get the malibu chicken and report back to me anyway i bet everything there is the worst oh i'm sure it is yeah i loved it yeah it was like because it was it was presented us to us as like high-end fans because you know how all australian people love like any any any like wisp of like american cultures like oh my god this is so good i think that's gone away more a little bit but yeah i mean we still we're still mad for any time an american celebrity shows up we're like remember that they opened up the burger place here what was it in an outburger in an out burger people lined up like all morning yeah whatever just calm down yeah like it'll come here eventually people were bringing back crispy cream donuts from sydney on a plane nursing them
Starting point is 00:20:18 on their lap like it was a child yeah when i was a kid uh there was like, there was one Denny's. Oh, yeah. And it was presented as like, this is the greatest American tradition. It's a Denny's. It was like on the waterfront. It was like they got the most prime piece of real estate in Melbourne. Like this amazing waterfront views. But Denny's in America is just like, it's the cheapest diner imaginable. I ate there when I was there recently.
Starting point is 00:20:45 Last year wasn't recent, like six months ago in Vegas. And it was like the only meal I ate for the day because it was so terrible. And I'm like, this is probably really bad for me. I'm giving up food. I'm just going to not pile anything on top of this. And then a few weeks ago, I got contacted to do the solo campaign for Denny's. Really? And I'm like, I can't.
Starting point is 00:21:02 Knowing that it was quite a bit of money, but I was just, I can't. Knowing that it was quite a bit of money, but I was just, I can't. I think you're going to say, I went to Denny's and then I was contacted a few weeks later by Denny's saying, oh, you might have E. coli. Yeah, that's right. But there you go. It wasn't even to do much.
Starting point is 00:21:18 It was a few like social media posts and whatever. But I'm like, I can't do it. A real man of principle. Not really. It's just that maybe if i hadn't have eaten it it could it could have gone very differently yeah wow but uh no i'm i very vividly remember that that's such a great meal you're doing you're doing their slogan right now if i didn't eat it it could have gone very differently that's their slogan but some people
Starting point is 00:21:40 love it it's just somebody just somebody looking sad on the toilet, holding a bucket. If I didn't eat it, it could have gone very differently. Denny's. Oh, God. You better hope they don't offer us more money because I would take it. Yeah, I know. Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom has a trailer. Would you say this is the best trailer they've put out?
Starting point is 00:22:03 I would say no because the whole plot's in it. It's revealed the whole thing. And that was the criticism of the first trailer was that it didn't reveal enough. And this has just gone, okay, all the spoilers, I guess, for the trailer. They go to the island to rescue dinosaurs, but they're really going to make worse dinosaurs. And then the dinosaur is loose in a big old house. And he's got a yellow stripe on him. Does he?
Starting point is 00:22:25 I think so. Cool. Is he a Richmond supporter, Mason? He's probably a Richmond supporter. Is he with football? Not really. No? No.
Starting point is 00:22:31 It's a good game. It's international. It's more than a game. It's more than a game. That's right. We got here. So John Hammond's people or whoever runs InGen these days, some snooty fucking highfalutin guy's going to get chomped in
Starting point is 00:22:45 half yeah yeah something uh or pterodactyl's gonna drop him into a volcano or whatever but um they realize that raptors follow orders so they want to make a big one i guess they can't really follow orders though they follow one guy sort of who's been training him for years and and some like built a personal relationship and a lot of the time they just do whatever they want anyway yeah yeah like you know what you know what follows orders completely a bomb just drop a laser guided bomb on anything that's right or a car you're driving yeah all of these things a knife follows orders fairly well that's true as long as you don't drop it. Yeah. So I don't know what they, why make it big?
Starting point is 00:23:26 Just maybe start with like a rabbit sized one. Yeah, for sure. But don't be like, yeah, let's just make one that's 15 feet tall and see what happens. Yeah. God. Because it's small enough to get through doors still. What are you doing? It needs to fight the T-Rex at the end.
Starting point is 00:23:40 Yeah. Did you see the rapid did like a, like a karate kid style sweep of a guy with a gun no yeah that happened it's pretty incredible all right yeah this trailer made me go because i've been defending this movie being like just wait because he's a good director and we'll see what happens made me go you know what this is you've kind of you've done too much here is that do you mean in terms of trailer reveal or even too much movie generally? I will. Cause it's not his fault.
Starting point is 00:24:07 No, I know it's not. Yeah, you're right. But they've revealed too much and it just seems a lot like Jurassic Park 2. Yeah. Where they just, they came and got him off the island and I don't know,
Starting point is 00:24:19 weaponized him or whatever, but this looks like it might actually be leading towards Planet of the X, but it's the dinosaurs are everywhere. Yeah. Right. I mean, they've got that big one in the ocean. He be leading towards Planet of the X, but the dinosaurs are everywhere. Yeah, right. Wow. I mean, they've got that big one in the ocean. He's eating surfers like the Meg, like the movie The Meg.
Starting point is 00:24:29 Like the movie The Meg. We're all very excited about it. Is this the year of giant ocean monsters? Gosh, I hope so. Yeah. Yeah. So, I don't know, man. The giant sea sponge movie?
Starting point is 00:24:41 Sure. Great Barrier Reef comes alive. Oh, that'd be great. Because it's dead now forever yeah are they going to bring that back
Starting point is 00:24:47 it's all bleached now isn't it no they can probably fix it with what don't even worry about it just fix it in post yeah exactly
Starting point is 00:24:52 yeah that's fine some waterproof acrylics that's what we're going to fix it with exactly yeah I don't know are you excited for this
Starting point is 00:24:59 yeah kind of okay we've got BD Wong looking very sinister I love these guys man I love it yeah me too yeah that's what this franchise needed it's the shot in the arm agreed and also we've got bd wong looking very sinister man i love it yeah me too yeah that's
Starting point is 00:25:05 what this this franchise needed it's the shot in the arm agreed and also we've got a little bit of goldblum yeah i don't think i think he's just gonna do a speech yes start like he's not gonna be anywhere that near that mansion you'd think he's got a fucked leg as well and if you remember he's got a cane oh yeah yeah the first movie but yeah goldblum's in everything now you can't escape him that That's true. He was in Isle of Dogs, which I saw, actually, which I might talk about later. Cool.
Starting point is 00:25:31 Mason, James Cameron is sick of superhero movies and he's sick of you. Oh, by the way, what? God. Yeah, that's what he said. All right, well, as long as his main focus of rage is against superhero movies, I'm okay. I wouldn't say main focus. I'd say it's equally divided.
Starting point is 00:25:40 Oh, jeez. You just said the superhero movie one first. I did. That's correct correct one of them had to be uh he said yeah he's hoping that people will start to get avengers fatigue pretty soon uh he said not that i wonder why that is so we can watch four more avatar movies he says not that i don't love those movies it's just come on guys there are other stories to tell besides hope hyper gonadal males without families doing
Starting point is 00:26:06 death defying things for two hours and wrecking cities in the process it's like oi you know what i mean that sounds an awful that sounds like somebody who doesn't love them yeah watch them yeah well i wouldn't i mean there's a there's a lot of that like yeah like the bad superhero movies i would say now to stick to just that yeah right i think there's there's been many examples where they've kind of gone beyond that but do you think it's an avatar thing mason that he's he's worried that no one's going to see avatar two to seven absolutely apparently he's likened it to the godfather two or one oh god don't do it it's happening mason no you can't stop it actually someone put this quote to kevin feige uh and he hadn't seen it and he was like his reaction was uh he loves the movies and he said that's awesome james cameron loves our movies
Starting point is 00:26:51 that's exciting so way to take a positive spin on it yeah i mean it would be very in that situation it would be very difficult not to take a shot just to be yeah for sure did you you know we all enjoyed terminator 6 or whatever the hell that was but But yeah. Do you think there is truth in that, though? I think there's a danger that could happen. But for me, every time they announce something that's weird and different or whatever. Yeah, I mean, obviously there is that danger. But at the same time, like the last one we got was Black Panther, which had a bloody society and a look and an aesthetic and a feel that we hadn't seen before in any of the other movies.
Starting point is 00:27:28 So to go, no, they're all, it's just, just bloody go down, old buddy. And half the heroes in that were women. That's true. And if you look at what's coming up, there's Ant-Man and the Wasp, Avengers, obviously, Deadpool 2, and Aquaman. And they're all kind of offbeat kind of weirder characters yeah right but there is also some news on his Terminator sequel which I am looking forward to
Starting point is 00:27:51 to be fair but he said the Terminator films are all about artificial intelligence but I would say we're looking at it differently than when I first wrote the story in 1992 that was your classic technology bad smart computers bad kind of thing nowadays though it's got much more of a nuanced perspective so it's smart computers bad but oh he's added an
Starting point is 00:28:12 additional word to that and no additional wisdom well the last one it was somebody else somebody else finished this sentence for me the last one was smart computers bad also Facebook will get you yeah exactly it was Facebook will get you which it is to be fair that's not incorrect yeah
Starting point is 00:28:31 that was so strange in that movie when they were like there's a new system that's rolling out it's obviously Skynet they're like it's going to link
Starting point is 00:28:37 your contacts in your phone to your social media and that's we have that we had it already yeah that's true
Starting point is 00:28:43 it's not amazing at all yeah I don't know I think they should if they want and that's the thing like the. We had it already. Yeah, that's true. It's not amazing at all. Yeah. Yeah, I don't know. I think they should, if they want, and that's the thing, like the whole world was like, oh, this sounds good. Let's get on, let's go to Skynet book or whatever.
Starting point is 00:28:53 It's like, why would we have done that? Like that would only work in a world where Facebook didn't already exist. Exactly. What they should have, what Skynet should have done, if Skynet were actually smart, is to go, we won't connect everything. Yeah, exactly. we won't steal your data and they'll be like okay or just replace mark zuckerberg with the t1000 or whatever yeah just do that yeah but man uh look no one's
Starting point is 00:29:17 looking to forward to avatar some people are i shouldn't say no one but yeah i think this might be a bit of james cameron is yeah i bet he is but like yeah you can't rule him out though that's the thing yeah you can't definitively say he's gonna ruin this no for sure you can't but i but i also think like this this what what he's saying is is from he's seen a couple of these and it's a guy in a mask yeah and he's fighting crime off the rooftops or whatever and that's that's his view of it And the view of what is coming out of Marvel Studios and some other places is much better than that and more nuanced and whatever.
Starting point is 00:29:51 Exactly. You should shut up. Speaking of what's coming up though, Mason. Hello. Spielberg is going to produce and probably direct the DC property Blackhawk. Oh, yeah, that's right. What is this?
Starting point is 00:30:03 Well, the Blackhawks uh like a team like a they were like a world war team of like flyers like like air force like a special that you put up if you're selling a sofa no i mean it wasn't but it is for the movie that's how they're rebooting it yeah so they're like it's like a world war two james cameron that's different what do you want that's right so that's a like a yeah it's like a world War II. See, James Cameron, that's different. What do you want? That's right. So it's like a World War II Air Force fighting force. Maybe he's going to move them to the modern day. Maybe they're going to connect them with Wonder Woman. Sure, yeah.
Starting point is 00:30:32 Maybe they could put Chris Pine in there. But he exploded. Put it, doesn't matter. You're right. He wakes up in a Blackhawk, in a bloody Blackhawk plane. Or he's got a twin. Could have a twin? I wish I had a twin.
Starting point is 00:30:45 Do you? Nah. Do you really need two of me? No. No. Okay, if you did have a twin, would you prefer he was in better shape or worse shape than you? No, you know what? I want him to look exactly like I look like.
Starting point is 00:31:00 So then if we look at each other, I'd be like, looking good. You know what I mean? Oh, wow. Okay, wow. It's like having a mirror that you can kick in the ass. like, looking good. You know what I mean? Oh, wow. Okay. It's like having a mirror that you can kick in the ass. For sure. You know what I mean? Yes. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:31:11 But Blackhawk sounds like he could be doing an Indiana Jones-esque adventure. Yeah, I guess so. I'm not a huge expert on the Blackhawks generally, but I think maybe the main guy is just called Blackhawk. Johnny Blackhawk. Johnny Blackhawkks generally, but I think maybe there is the main guy is just called Blackhawk. Johnny Blackhawk. Johnny Blackhawk, exactly, yeah. All right, yeah, it could be Indiana Jones-y.
Starting point is 00:31:31 Yeah. Could be Dunkerque-y. It won't be. It will most certainly not be. Mason, are you excited for Star Wars Episode IX? Yes. All right, then. Yes.
Starting point is 00:31:42 J.J. Abrams is looking. Bearing in mind, very small amount of sleep that I've had. Okay, good. Wow, that's a ringing endorsement. And I do remember seeing a TV in a bar last night and it was running Last Jedi. Really? Not the movie, but just like an ad for the DVD.
Starting point is 00:31:56 Cool. So that's probably... What, just on loop? No, just the TV was on. Okay. And I just remember seeing it and going, oh, yeah, not bad. Not bad. Not bad at all.
Starting point is 00:32:09 Well, J.J. Abrams is looking to cast a 40 to 50-year-old female character to fill the role of somebody called Mara. Okay. In a Star Wars film. You familiar? Oh, Mara Jade, perhaps. I mean, they often use code names and whatever, so there's a very good chance that this will almost certainly not be Mara Jade. But it could be Mara Jade-esque.
Starting point is 00:32:24 Yeah. Like an old fling of Luke Skywalker. Maybe they've got a kid or something. Yeah, maybe. Or whatever. You know, maybe raise their kid. We're going to bring in that Mason. Oh, what if they twisted it again?
Starting point is 00:32:34 No, they just don't. That'd be incredible if J.J. Abrams was just like, nah, I'm retconning all the retcons. I don't care. That would be pretty hilarious. That would be funny, yeah. Yeah. But I prefer they did it, but why not? i do like it when they do something in star wars and everyone gets
Starting point is 00:32:49 upset do you think there would be any narrative value in like in the last one they say hey ray you knew who your parents were nobody's yeah and then in this one they were like nah it was a fake out your parents are obi-wan kenobi and luke skywalker you know what i mean together yeah sure uh no i don't i think it kind of flies in the face of the message of that film which was you don't have to be a prophecy or from a particular bloodline to be special that was kind of the point and then to turn around and go well you kind of do you know yeah right i mean they really should let jedi have children's because you'd think that would work better yeah you'd get more you get more force sensitive children but apparently they just appear anyway and it also seems to be in flux like yeah for sure because with the arrival of
Starting point is 00:33:36 kyle ren and ray it kind of there was a big spike in force activity or whatever you know what i mean yeah what's that what's that word well they're probably just tracking in midichlorians right i'd imagine so well they're dirty faith yeah so that's i don't i think that's also we i don't think we've really seen a 40 to 50 year old female character in a star wars film who's like a jedi that's true kind of thing so i think it could be interesting yet like uh what's her name felicity get her what the woman who played felicity kerry russell yeah get her she's like 35 she's not she's not. She'd be over 40. Let me check. All right.
Starting point is 00:34:08 You're bloody all right. What year did you think Felicity, the movie Felicity, the TV show Felicity came out? She's 42. There you go. That was close. Shove it up your butt, Mason. Wow.
Starting point is 00:34:17 Yeah, gotcha. Okay, what if Mara Jade is just like, what if Luke and Mara Jade, they make that canon, but they got a messy divorce, and she lives on the other side of that planet? And they have to go back and figure it out. Oh, fantastic. And it's just flash.
Starting point is 00:34:33 We bring back Hamill. Yeah, of course. And there's just a lot of domestic antics, and they're always bugging each other. You said you were going to stay in. Yeah, I'd love to see that. You drained that thing out to stay in. Yeah. I'd love to see that. Did you find it weird?
Starting point is 00:34:47 You drank that thing and all the green milk where I wanted some green milk. I came here just for my glass of green milk and drank all the green milk. I think there's probably too much of an age gap between Kerry Russell and Mark Hamill though.
Starting point is 00:35:00 Nobody said it was going to be Kerry Russell. I'm just saying. I said that. I'm mixing it. Okay, fine. You know'm just saying I said that I'm nixing it okay fine you know what I mean yeah I get it
Starting point is 00:35:07 yeah you need someone a bit closer to 50 I'd imagine or who looks closer to 50 like your mum Mason got her yeah you got her yeah thanks
Starting point is 00:35:14 Mason do you love F. Gary Gray the director um what did he direct he directed one of the Fast and Furious and he directed
Starting point is 00:35:22 the Straight Outta Compton I believe which I haven't seen actually neither have I oh I was going to say ista Compton I believe which I haven't seen actually neither have I I was going to say is it good no it's not
Starting point is 00:35:28 I don't know yeah he did a bunch of other stuff but he looks like he's going to be with Paramount he's going to be directing or involved in
Starting point is 00:35:37 the production of bringing Mask to the big screen oh Mask Mobile Armored Strike Command yes that one Command with a K that's right Mobile Arnott's Strike Command. Yes, that one. Command with a K. That's right, Mobile Arnott's.
Starting point is 00:35:48 Yeah, okay. So it's Command with a K. It's Command with a K, yeah. Okay, I was going to say like Cobra, Kai. Yes. So for anybody who can't remember Mask with a K, for whatever, they decided they would combine two just gimmicks, one of which was uh that all the
Starting point is 00:36:07 characters wore big mask helmets love it had like superpower stuff love it so they could shoot laser beams or they could give them super strength or whatever sell a toy or sell a toy precisely yeah and that really didn't do much in the toy in fact it did nothing great the primary selling point was that they all had a vehicle that would transform into a cooler vehicle yeah okay so it's like a like a bit better than a sunroof yeah for sure yeah yeah absolutely like inspect the inspector gadgets car yeah but more even more even more yes i don't believe that so like a motorcycle would turn into a helicopter how does a motorcycle turn into a helicopter when it's at home are you enc encased in it? No, it's like one of those gyrocopters. What if you stood up?
Starting point is 00:36:48 You'd get your head cut off. But you're wearing a mask. You're wearing a mask, exactly. And you would know not to do that because you're a trained professional. Okay. In Mobile Armoured Strike Command with a K. Okay, yeah, great. Is this something that you're excited about?
Starting point is 00:37:00 I'm not, but I will watch it. Yeah, well, we have to. I did like them as a kid. I had some masks. It was only short-lived though, wasn't it? I have no idea yeah it's one of those things there might have been 100 episodes there might have been four we had no sense of how much of anything there was true we might have watched the same four episodes over and over and over again exactly i remember that remember that show city of gold mysterious cities of gold yes yeah i think i just watched the same
Starting point is 00:37:23 episode a hundred times I don't think I've seen any more of that show than that I remember a boat transformed into another boat I remember they had a big flying gold eagle Nice Someday we will find the city of gold
Starting point is 00:37:39 Alright stop playing that YouTube video of the opening to Mysterious Cities of Gold and let's get back to this They re-created that recently Yeah they did the new animation All right, stop playing that YouTube video of the opening to Mysterious Cities of Gold and let's get back to this. They re-created that recently. Did they? Yeah, they did the new animation. There was a Mendoza, do you remember?
Starting point is 00:37:51 No. There was also, the Masked Horse had like a wild 57 Chevy that turned into a tank. Great. It was pretty cool. Cool. Was it turret and all? Yeah, it was like a teal blue with flames down the sides. That's what you want.
Starting point is 00:38:03 It's wild. Well, that sounds really good. I can't wait till they make this. Same. Can't wait till they ruin it. Mason, Avengers Infinity War could very well have the biggest opening of all time. We'll see. The Force Awakens got something like $250 million-ish in the US.
Starting point is 00:38:18 Yep. This could beat that. It's already sold $50 million worth of tickets in pre-sales, which is a lot. But I don't think it wouldn't beat its overall, it wouldn't beat Avatar Titanic because it doesn't have a clear run. Deadpool's out in two weeks and then Mask and whatever's after that. I can't remember. Whatever Spielberg was doing, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:38:35 Something about a newspaper, but the newspaper, the government's going to get it or whatever. Or did they already release that one? There's a newspaper. Yeah. I want to be clear about this because I'm a bit addled. So maybe I'm mishearing this, but there's a newspaper yeah i want to be clear about this because i'm a bit addled so maybe sure yeah maybe i'm mishearing this but there's a newspaper correct and the government's gonna get it yeah yeah because it's doing too much news okay right yeah yeah yeah uh so that's what the people want they want the news that's what i'm saying i want the maximum
Starting point is 00:38:57 amount of news i agree uh so what do we got here so do you think it's going to beat the force awakens in terms of opening weekend? Yes. I think it could very well. If it's not, it'll be close, I'd imagine. I mean, because also it's got an extended weekend. Well, here it opens on Wednesday. Oh, yeah, that's right.
Starting point is 00:39:15 Anzac Day, which we can talk about. Oh, boy. And I think it might be a bit earlier in other regions as well. But there was a bit of a bloody uproar here because one of our morning hosts, Karl Stefanovic, all around human man. Well, I was indifferent towards him before this.
Starting point is 00:39:35 Yeah, right. I have no opinion about this guy. Yeah, but he was like, why are they releasing a movie on Anzac Day? Everybody should go to a dawn service, which you can do. You can do both of those things you can do both things
Starting point is 00:39:47 also like we were talking about before the show cancel the football there's always an Anzac Day match white people kicking a football around
Starting point is 00:39:54 I'm going to say also I'm going to take a wild stab in the dark and say that today's show is going to be on the show that he's on exactly
Starting point is 00:40:00 but no he's going to be respectful unless you're saluting a statue for two and a half hours shut your god damn mouth but I think there is it's a public holiday Exactly. But no, he's going to be respectful. Unless you're saluting a statue for two and a half hours. Yeah, right. Shut your goddamn mouth. But I think it's a public holiday.
Starting point is 00:40:11 It's a celebration of freedom, do you know what I mean, and our great nation. The only acceptable things to do are watch football and sink tinnies. That's exactly it. Yeah. What's the difference if people want to go to a movie? Anyway. That's exactly it.
Starting point is 00:40:23 What's the difference if people want to go to a movie? Anyway. Starting point is 00:41:16 That's sunrisechallenge.ca. So, we thought a good opportunity this week, in lieu of Avengers Infinity War, Mason, James Cameron's favourite movie and series. In preparation for Avengers Infinity War. We're going to go through all the Marvel films. Yeah, nice. Not in huge detail for each one, because there's quite a few of them.
Starting point is 00:41:36 And so each phases, talk a little bit about each one. Yeah. And then at the end of each phase, maybe pick a favourite. Yes. And at the end, declare an overall winner. Okay. And the losers get struck from history. wow yeah so that's wow this is official too that's official feige was on the line earlier he said yeah all right we'll delete them yeah they're off itunes we're gonna snap all the dvds in half they're coming to your house wow
Starting point is 00:41:58 yeah all right so and should we we should also of the when you say a favorite of each phase maybe we should say if you've, we've all got about two days to get completely up to speed on the Marvel Universe in order to watch Infinity War. So maybe we should pick one out of each phase that you should have to watch. Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, let's see how many and then...
Starting point is 00:42:19 That changes it. Have to watch and favorite is different, isn't it? Well, we'll see how we go. We'll just have to see how we go. Maybe we'll forget this premise about five minutes in but i think like if you if you were like look i haven't seen a lot of these yeah i would like to i'd like to i'd like to go into infinity war knowing who's who yeah maybe we should yeah agreed all right here we go phase one 2008 can you believe it mason
Starting point is 00:42:41 it's been 10 years ah 10, 10 beautiful years. Correct. And it started with Iron Man in 2008, which really set the tone for the universe in general. Yeah, it really did. And also the template for a guy gets a suit and... Yeah, that's right. ...he fights another guy who's got the same suit. Really set that origin story, didn't it?
Starting point is 00:42:56 Really set that man and machine versus man and machine... Correct. ...dichotomy. What do you think the strength of this movie is? It's funny. Aside from... Yeah, sure. It's funny. Glasses sure. It's funny.
Starting point is 00:43:07 Glasses. He's got a cool pair of glasses. He's got a cool pair of glasses. They're immediately dated. They don't assume everybody's an idiot. Yes. They assume that people have seen maybe a superhero movie or two in their time. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:43:20 Yeah. They don't have to explain what a superhero is. No. absolutely yeah they don't have to explain what a superhero is no hey maybe i'll maybe i'll fight crime and maybe i'll bloody maybe i like the backstory of that he's not a great bloke yes like a lot of superheroes you know they've they've always kind of wanted to do good and justice and whatever but he's like i've been terrible for 30 years and i think i'm gonna do a nice thing and by that i mean punch people into walls yes for sure like that yeah solid work now is it essential i think it is all right yeah i think it's to kick things off it's probably not my might be my favorite okay to go through the talk to the rest of these first this is a great phase
Starting point is 00:44:01 of look look iron man as far as Iron Man goes, look, you could bloody call me 90s pop superstar sensation Natalie Imbruglia because I'm already torn about this movie. Because, I mean, it does set up the universe itself. It's got your Nick Fury cameo. Also, without the Nick Fury cameo, it very much stands on its own. That's true, yeah. You could just watch this and it's a good time.
Starting point is 00:44:27 It was also the same year as The Dark Knight, which is crazy, right? Could you watch this one and then maybe skip some of the other... You could skip a lot of the other Phase 1 movies
Starting point is 00:44:36 I feel. You could skip Incredible Hulk. You could skip Iron Man 2. You could probably skip Thor, though I like Thor. And you'd probably want to do First Avenger, maybe. Because it contains a Tesseract? could probably skip thor though i like thor and you probably want to do first avenger maybe because it contains a tesseract sure i just like it does the first avenger of the post-credit
Starting point is 00:44:56 sequence he wakes up in the modern era right okay okay i guess we kind of have to keep that one but it's also kind of establishing the avengers fairly thoroughly who everybody is yep so you don't you could probably just start at the avengers yeah and a lot of people did because obviously that movie did better than all the other ones yeah that's true but no iron man is even the way it looks like the suit still looks fantastic i love the design i love the like the color scheme scheme of it and all that i like how we how he does a cool landing but he doesn't get liquid in his suit when yeah that's true yeah i like the bit where he it and all that. I like how he does a cool landing, but he doesn't get turned to liquid in his suit when he hits the ground. Yeah, that's true. I like the bit where he gets hit by a tank out of the air
Starting point is 00:45:30 and he's got a tank missile. That's pretty good. Blows up a tank. That movie really kicks off when he goes into that war zone. Yeah. That's such a great sequence. And it's fairly simple as well. There's not much to it.
Starting point is 00:45:40 He's just punching guys and shooting lasers. Yeah. But it's just brutal yeah it's really good nobody is ready for it nobody's really seen anything like this yeah that is pretty cool yeah all right iron man's in everything else is out oh come on mate i'm gonna have to think about this what about uh hang on what was where was avengers is that phase one or is that phase one okay right that's tough isn't it yeah uh the incredible hulk did you i didn't see this one i think this is the only one I haven't seen at the movies.
Starting point is 00:46:05 I also saw it on DVD. Yeah. It's okay. Yeah, it's fine. And also, that's inherently confusing because it's Ed Norton. Yes, it is. It's not Ruffalo. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:46:14 It sets up some stuff. But a lot of people kind of off the back of the history of the Hulk from the TV movies in the 80s and also the Hulk movie that had been out five years earlier. People were kind of familiar with this character. It also sort of works as a sequel to Hulk 2003 because he starts in the jungle or Peru or wherever, which is where the last one sort of ends up from memory. But I don't like the design of the Hulk in this at all.
Starting point is 00:46:43 The green's too kind of camo green and the hair and the face. He's too ripped. Yes, yeah. Yeah. I don't think it's a terrible film, but I think you could skip this one. For sure. Yeah. Can we skip Thor?
Starting point is 00:47:00 Thor, first Thor. I like Thor, first Thor. But you could probably skip it. Yeah, look, we've got two days. Yeah. We can see an absolute maximum of ten of these movies. Thor first Thor I like Thor first Thor but you could probably skip it yeah look we've got two days we can see an absolute maximum of ten of these movies
Starting point is 00:47:09 alright it's also weird that Chris Hemsworth has dyed blonde eyebrows in it oh right yeah it's very off-putting because he doesn't
Starting point is 00:47:17 have it in any of the other ones but I think that's a solid movie though Thor first Thor especially because it's such a stupid premise.
Starting point is 00:47:26 Yes. But it also introduces Loki. Yep. Which maybe you can't skip it because of that. How sympathetic is he? How sympathetic are you to Loki in that movie? I think there's... Yeah, because at the end he's like, he just wants his father's approval and he doesn't care and he floats off into space.
Starting point is 00:47:46 Because if you just watch the Avengers, he's a real bad guy. Oh, he's a very bad guy. He pulls that guy's eye out. Yeah, he does. Yeah, he stabs his brother. Yeah, I mean, he's a real bad guy in that one. He puts his father in a coma or whatever. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:47:59 What is his goal in that again? Just a rule. Is that the idea? I think so, yeah. He's got hair like trinity from the matrix yeah it's his short loki hair which you're a big fan of no i've got i got a soft spot for this i mean the last battle is kind of like it just looks like in a town that they built for the day like it doesn't feel like a real town there's a lot of dutch angles in it
Starting point is 00:48:19 the destroyer's good yeah i think that'll come back into play with like thor will get the destroyer arm at some point? Absolutely not. Well, it's probably Destroyer as well. Yeah. Because it was in the vault. It's in the name. When it all went up, yeah.
Starting point is 00:48:32 Or did they destroy it in that film? They did destroy it in that film, yes. Okay, so it's already destroyed. Yeah, exactly, yeah. Okay, I gotcha. Also, I think it's got a ghost in it, so. What? Whose ghost?
Starting point is 00:48:40 Just a ghost. Just a ghost. Just a ghost. I think they should check on whose ghost that is. Right, uh-huh. I think they should just put anybody's ghost in it.'s not a robot is it it's magic it's magic yeah i like the time in that movie where when it turns up colson's there and he's like it's just like a stark thing what did yeah right what is this that's fun yeah but it also i think it what's
Starting point is 00:48:59 good about that movie it takes away all the god thor stuff so you can make him relatable because otherwise it's just who is this that's true space monster man and they make him human and then you can kind of build that stuff back up which is what they've been doing you make him more relatable how old is that guy you'd have to be like a thousand years old or something like that i thought you meant chris hemsworth how old is chris hemsworth he's like 35 yeah something like that yeah but uh yeah i don't know what else about thor anything else about that it's about that not essential would you say not essential it's good go back maybe it's probably not good comparatively i think it is i haven't seen it in a while so i can't yeah but i remember really enjoying it yeah which movie
Starting point is 00:49:42 iron man 2 which came out before introduces the hammer doesn't it in the post credits? Yes it does. Yeah. Entirely inessential. Yeah that's a that movie is all
Starting point is 00:49:50 build up. Yes for sure. I think it's got some cool ideas but it's mostly just get ready for the Avengers in two years and the Spider-Man's in it.
Starting point is 00:49:59 Oh yeah yeah yeah. Yeah. Okay. Alright Captain America first Avenger should we I just want to say for Iron Man 2 the race car scene's great and I love that suit. Yeah that Okay. All right, Captain America, First Avenger. Should we- I just want to say for Iron Man 2-
Starting point is 00:50:05 Oh, yes. The race car scene's great and I love that suit. Yeah, that's good. It's my favorite suit. Yeah, it's good. Can it fly that suit? No, I don't think so. Yeah, that's cool.
Starting point is 00:50:11 That is cool. Less features, streamlined. I love it. Yeah, yeah. First Avenger. Okay. What are your thoughts on it? I mean, it's good.
Starting point is 00:50:19 I like it a lot. Yeah. Yeah. Do you need it? Probably not, but it might be my favorite. Yeah, okay. Phase ones. Phase ones. Yeah. Interesting. Yeah. Yeah. Do you need it? Probably not, but it might be my favorite. Yeah, okay. Phase one. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:50:27 Interesting. Yeah. Okay. It's, I think it does a really good job of establishing the character because that wasn't a movie I gave a shit about. No, absolutely not. I went in with trepidation. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:50:38 But it's, and that was like, that was the same year as Thor. That was a good year. The special effects, like the body transformation stuff is really good. Like he just looks like a little skinny guy. That's true, yeah. It's so good. But I think it kind of falters a bit in the third act, but I think it's got a solid ending where he sacrifices himself.
Starting point is 00:50:53 Yeah, true. It's got stakes and weight and there's consequences. Yep. You know, where Tony Stark's just like, I'm Iron Man, fuck you! You know, that's pretty much the ending of the first Iron Man. Yeah. It's interesting, though, from these early phases,
Starting point is 00:51:06 they kind of, there's no, no one's got an alter ego. That's true, yeah. They kind of threw that out the door almost immediately. I mean, Thor's Thor. They didn't do any of the Donald Blake shit. Captain America's Captain America. Yeah. Although I believe in Thor,
Starting point is 00:51:18 he is temporarily given the identity of Donald Blake for a second, for a hot second. When Hawkeye's introduced. Yeah. He goes for a gun, but then he gets the bow and arrow. Oh, so good. Essential.
Starting point is 00:51:30 Essential. I'm just kidding. It's not essential. I don't think it... I think if you shot Thor in the neck with an arrow, it would kill him. As a human man. Yeah, absolutely.
Starting point is 00:51:38 It would probably kill him, wouldn't it? Yeah. Or would he just get all these powers back? Which is what happened when he got swatted in the head by the... Oh, yeah. No, he'd'd die he'd absolutely die stakes then mason very good yeah but you see that's the thing like so captain america introduces the tesseract yeah which is the first of the infinity stones but i don't think they even really knew no they're doing that that's true yeah and thor introduced to the infinite and Thor introduced the Infinity Gauntlet
Starting point is 00:52:05 it's not the same one but yeah so what do you think they were going to do with that not that initially no because it did sink and it didn't disappear right
Starting point is 00:52:13 it sank yeah the snow and they recovered it as well they recovered it yeah in that did they recover it in Captain America
Starting point is 00:52:18 oh S.H.I.E.L.D. must have got it at some point yeah right but do we see it emerge I don't think so okay right yeah but they would have been able because it's it gives off gamma radiation and a bunch of other
Starting point is 00:52:28 shit so they would have been able to find a good movie inessential okay i'm gonna say somewhat essential okay right but i understand the avengers what do you think of that movie that's look if we could only pick one out of phase one it's probably the one that's the one yeah if you can only see one yeah brings all the characters togetherings all the characters together. Brings all the characters together. It introduces everybody through context. Yes. So you know who's who immediately. You know who's the boss. It's Tony Danza.
Starting point is 00:52:51 You know how everybody ranks in relation to each other. Yeah, right. You see their first meetings. You get a sense of their powers. Yep. You really don't have to see anything else. No. Off the back of it.
Starting point is 00:53:03 That's the only movie you need to see. Correct. In your life. Say what you will about Joss Whedon Mason. Go for it. Bad bloke. Okay. But he did a good job at kind of bringing those characters together.
Starting point is 00:53:12 And also, this is in a universe where it hadn't really been done before. In terms of... It's not a universe. In terms of movies that hadn't been done before. Yes, that's true. Or well. Is there another movie prior to that where they put a bunch of characters and then put them together? Just the Viewers' Universe, obviously.
Starting point is 00:53:29 And the Fugitive with the sequel. Oh, yeah. US Marshals. Yeah, US Marshals. It's to be commended, Mason. Yes. Whether or not you like it or not, which you do. I do like it a lot.
Starting point is 00:53:39 But it's still to be commended, Mason. Yes. I think there's a little too much kind of Joss whedon quippy kind of stuff yeah right love uh-huh but i think if you took some of that out yeah it would feel like a much longer movie yeah absolutely yeah probably it is a very long movie also yeah uh i love the hulk in that as well yeah they finally got it right like the look the attitude you can do attitude yes yeah i think do you prefer ruffalo or Norton? Do you think Edward Norton would have done a good job?
Starting point is 00:54:07 No. No? No, I like Ruffalo. You just don't think he would have... You don't think it could have been a... I think he might have been a little too diva-y. Well, yeah. Well, that's... Well, a couple of people got let go.
Starting point is 00:54:16 Yeah. Him and Don... Not Don Cheadle. Don Cheadle replaced him. Terrence Howard. Terrence Howard got let go. I think if he had got hired in the next phase, that wouldn't have happened.
Starting point is 00:54:27 Right, right, right. Do you think also because The Hulk didn't do super well as a movie that they just went, nobody remembers this, we can recast him. Exactly, yeah. Who kind of cares? So the essential one is The Avengers, but would you say... But what is the best one? Or your favourite at least?
Starting point is 00:54:43 It's hard to go past The First Iron Man. Yeah, I think that's still my favourite. But I'm going to say First Avenger. I really like it. All right, good. I like his muscles, too. They're good muscles, aren't they? I'm not ashamed to admit that.
Starting point is 00:54:53 So shiny. So shiny. Well, he was sweating in that machine, wasn't he? Yeah, that's true. It's like the inner space thing. Have you ever seen the movie Inner Space? Yes. And the bad guy's in his inner space.
Starting point is 00:55:01 Oh, I remember. It's in a very small space. Yes. Inside a man. So, all in all, phase one, Molto Bernays. Molto Bernays. Okay, good. Phase two is a real mixed bag for me.
Starting point is 00:55:12 It kind of starts off not great, and then it gets really good, and then it's just whatever. All right, I'm ready. So the first we had Iron Man 3 in 2013. Completely inessential. Yes, I agree. What does he learn? That he's still great. That's correct.
Starting point is 00:55:27 That is what he learns. Yeah. Have we started this podcast then? Maybe we hadn't. Would have been close to. I think Thor the Dark World might have been the first one we did. Interesting.
Starting point is 00:55:38 No, I just think, we've talked about this at length. The character doesn't make sense in this film. No, no. For multiple reasons. And he gets PTSD and then he's fine again
Starting point is 00:55:45 then he's fine because he realises he's great yeah because he gets a glue gun and a glove and a new pair of suddies and whatever there are moments in that film
Starting point is 00:55:53 I really like the bit where he beats up the guys as his suit's kind of flying in okay sure and he's got like the foot and the arm yeah okay right I like that
Starting point is 00:56:00 but that I don't understand why the bit where he gets hit in the nuts that's pretty funny but I don't understand why. The bit where he gets hit in the nuts. That's pretty funny. But I don't understand. There's a lot of weird character choices, like why he would pick that suit as the one that he likes. Because if he gets hit hard enough, it just falls off him.
Starting point is 00:56:14 Yeah, correct. And it happens multiple times. And it's a movie where he doesn't. Iron Man 3 is the movie where they decide to just dismantle the character as a guy who plans ahead and learns from his mistakes and always has a backup plan or whatever. And he just becomes a guy that just keeps going into grapple with the guys he knows can melt his suit down in two seconds.
Starting point is 00:56:37 Exactly. Which annoyed me to no end the first time I saw that. And every subsequent time I've seen it. Sure. Did you enjoy the introduction of Iron Patriot? No. Fair enough. Yeah. There wasn't really a point to that, I guess. I saw that and every subsequent time I've seen it sure did you enjoy the introduction of Iron Patriot no fair enough yeah there wasn't really a point to that
Starting point is 00:56:48 I guess I mean he was protecting the president yeah right but isn't that also a different it's a different yeah it's a different in the comic books that's Norman Osborn
Starting point is 00:56:55 the Green Goblin in his own version of the no it's a different it's actually a different suit from Iron Man 2 it is physically a different suit yeah it's a rebuild it's a rebuild
Starting point is 00:57:05 yeah yeah right yeah who rebuilds it uh tony stark okay wait no no wait it's in between iron man 3 and civil war it's a rebuild that's an aim suit right all the technology was all the hammer technology was taken out of the suit at the end of Iron Man 2. It doesn't work. And it was replaced with AimTech. Right, okay. Why? Who knows?
Starting point is 00:57:28 Is that in a comic? Probably, yeah. Okay, fair enough. But I guess the government just goes with the cheapest contractor, and Tony Stark is not cheap. No, that's it. You would have thought he'd just give his friend a suit. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:57:39 I mean, one with back support and a parachute or whatever. For sure, yeah. Who am I to judge? I think it's an okay film. It's got some good dialogue and some good character moments, I guess. But as an Iron Man film, it might be my least favorite Iron Man film. Whoa. What a call to make.
Starting point is 00:57:57 And I don't like two. But I don't really like any of them except for one, to be fair. Or that character. I don't like that he doesn't learn anything. He doesn't really get his comeuppance he does later that's why i like civil war yeah but uh yeah he's just kind of like he gets his girlfriend killed but then she's got firepower so it's fine yeah guy pierce is the mandarin but who cares yeah but also he's not because there's a real mandarin i didn't even mind that Mandarin twist. I hated it. That it wasn't, that it was the Ben Kingsley character.
Starting point is 00:58:27 Yeah. But I just think if you're going to have somebody behind it, have it someone more interesting than Guy Pearce because he was mean to him and left him on a route. That's so true. I think there's...
Starting point is 00:58:34 So petty. There's room to make something else there. But the kid's fine, I guess. He's got a lot of suits, but it's kind of who cares. Yeah, exactly. Just waste them all, why don't you? Speaking of who cares. I'm ready.
Starting point is 00:58:51 Thor The Dark World in 2013 also. Inessential. Is fine? Yes. I don't think it's that bad. It's just fine. Is a trend emerging here that the Inessential movies are the ones that contain the Infinity Stones? I meant the Inessential ones. or the essential the inessential ones but iron man 3 doesn't have
Starting point is 00:59:11 an infinity stone oh i meant no anything i'm sorry i meant more in the sense of anything with an infinity stone is inessential i don't think so the dark world inessential sure captain america first avenger You say Inessential. But then that becomes essential in the Avengers. Yes. Yeah. But what I'm saying is that if these movies are a little bit light on... Fun? No, if they're a little bit light on gravitas, they're like, we'll put an Infinity Stone here.
Starting point is 00:59:41 Yeah, right. So figure that. Yeah, you might be right. Okay, well, as we continue on, we'll figure this out. Do right yeah you might be right okay well we'll we'll as we continue on we'll figure this out tornado infinity stone no why not it's boring yeah it is a bit boring what does it do also don't know gross i was gonna say it opened portals but it doesn't that was just an event that was happening yeah right the convergence or whatever oh yeah it was gonna bloody happen i like the the way asgard's more fleshed out true. Yeah, I think they did a lot of more interesting stuff for the designs and whatever.
Starting point is 01:00:09 But the Thor-Jane stuff is completely pointless. She's gone after this movie. And I think we've said this about this movie a number of times, but it's a movie where the entire universe is at stake. The whole universe is going to come to a grinding halt. But where is everyone? And nobody really seems to care. It never feels like there's any stakes at all. The whole universe is going to come to a grinding halt. But where is everyone? And nobody really seems to care.
Starting point is 01:00:29 It never feels like there's any stakes at all. Yeah. Also, we should point out we're not doing one shots, I guess, or TV series or anything like that. There's just no time and I'm really tired. He's really tired. Yeah. But no, completely inessential.
Starting point is 01:00:40 But I don't think it's bad. Yeah. I think it's okay. This is a good one. This might be my favorite one. What else? Captain winter soldier yes is great do you think it's great because there's no infinity stone they have to write a real story yes sure but it's also the one where they were like okay we're also feeling this we know there's some fatigue coming up yeah we're gonna do we're gonna do a little something different and it i wish it wasn't resolved the hydra thing so quickly because off the back of this film it's just like i mean it
Starting point is 01:01:08 affected agents of shield but in the next like in by age of old time they're like we got most of them yeah that's true yeah but we got gary shandley yeah that's right it's all right we got him he's dead now we killed him in real life just to be sure but that was a massive deal yes like to be like everything that you've worked towards and everybody in government and it's all Hydra. Even Robert Redford's a Nazi. Greatest American hero, Robert Redford. But it's got the best fight scenes.
Starting point is 01:01:36 Yes. Chris Evans recently released some video. Did you see this? No, I don't think I did. I think it was on his Twitter. Yeah. Of just like all the... Oh, he's got the elevator one?
Starting point is 01:01:45 Yeah, all the on set and all the training videos and stuff like that for the elevator scene. That's awesome. That's a great scene. So that goes to show that you don't need a dragon flying in and everything's exploding and there's a laser and a woman is a volcano woman or whatever. Well, that's put pay to my next movie. So thanks a bunch for that what a backhand oh what a son of a bitch no i'm saying so passag you know that i was working on
Starting point is 01:02:12 flying dragon laser volcano lady yeah it's true they already made that movie versus sharktopus i was gonna say well shark boy lava girl that's what it sounds like and chris evans is great he's a really good Captain America. Yeah. He's probably too good, if anything, Mason. He's too muscular and he's too good at it. And it's also a black widow film, a lot of it as well. Yeah, that's true.
Starting point is 01:02:34 I think this is also the era of, let's just roll in some other characters. These don't have to be just solo films. We can bring in some. Well, it's more his story than hers, but she has a real pivotal role in that. Herstory. Herstory, yes. And she gets the USB out of a bloody vending machine. Oh, that's true, yeah.
Starting point is 01:02:51 How do you get it in there? I don't know. How do you get it in there? I don't know. I don't know. No, he probably squeezed the sides of the vending machine and the front came off. Oh, okay. It popped out.
Starting point is 01:03:02 It seems like something he could do. Yeah. Yeah. But is this movie essential yes how so because I think it's good character building
Starting point is 01:03:08 yeah is it though is it it is we have to pick one okay we'll leave it till the end out of this phase
Starting point is 01:03:15 it might not be essential we've got to pick one movie out of this phase that is essential I think this it introduces the Winter Soldier who plays a prominent role in Civil War
Starting point is 01:03:23 in Civil War and Infinity War. So I guess it depends what you're watching. Yeah. Because if in Phase 3 you don't pick Civil War as essential, then you wouldn't pick this one. Uh-huh. Yeah. My kid's back, Mason.
Starting point is 01:03:36 He's going to run amok. Causing a ruckus. He is. But after that, we got Guardians of the Galaxy. And I think maybe that's the essential one. Yeah. Because it's all space stuff yep not thor space stuff get rid of that yes but it opens up the cosmic universe yes universe and
Starting point is 01:03:51 we get thanos in a floaty chair correct though he was in it at the end of the avengers remember he turned to the camera and they were like yep and then they did the same thing in age of ultron inessential yes i think it yeah but i know what do you think this is a great film guardians yeah yep the two best films are in the middle of this phase uh-huh this is i remember i think we'd start the podcast at this point i was getting a bit i don't know if i like these as much right but these two back to back were fantastic is it essential i think it is. What makes it essential though? We get Gamora's backstory.
Starting point is 01:04:29 We get the wider universe implications. Yeah, right. We get this is not just happening on Earth. There is a convergence of sorts that is on is on its way it's rippling its way across rippling its way yep yeah fair enough yep we get the origin of the infinity stones also that's true there's literally a bit in it where they go hey there's all these infinity stones yeah and they're dangerous i think it's also essential because it shows that it doesn't even feel like a superhero movie in the same way the other ones do what's that dog up to
Starting point is 01:05:03 yeah no farts those two things oh good excellent but dog what are you doing anyway just leave her a minute see what she does okay let's just keep an eye on her mate all right okay so yeah all those things i agree make it make it essential but is it the best one you think it's winter soldier i really like guardians of the galaxy but it's got a good soundtrack as well. Like 20% of that movie is soundtrack.
Starting point is 01:05:28 Yeah, for sure. The audio portion? Yes. 50%. Wow. All right. So, look. I think we've found
Starting point is 01:05:36 the best one and the essential one but maybe the next couple of movies. Age of Ultron. Nah. It's not that. I quite like it.
Starting point is 01:05:44 Yeah, right. I don't think it's that much quite like it yeah right i don't think it's that much worse than the first avengers but it doesn't do that much interesting no exactly like they kind of fall apart but not really because they all civil war is the one where they get torn apart this one they just they band together and they beat up an identical army yes that's true yeah i thought it was going to be more than that and it's it's not really origin of the vision that's good that i like a thought it was going to be more than that, and it's not really. Origin of the Vision. That's good. That I like a lot.
Starting point is 01:06:06 Yes. Yeah. But again. Origin of Claw, played by Andy Serkis. That's true. I like that a lot also. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:06:12 Origin of Quicksilver and Death of a Character for once. Yeah. Good. Who's died prior to this? No one. No one important. Yeah. Also, he didn't really die but yeah i guess you're right yeah
Starting point is 01:06:26 oh it does have an impact on civil war which is which is oh the sokovia records yeah stop flying into places and nah but we see that on a television screen so don't worry about it yeah well this is probably the least essential well maybe not least but Ant-Man is fine and there's fun moments and there's abs that's great that is great but it's it's okay
Starting point is 01:06:52 yeah it's just okay isn't it yeah that and Doctor Strange for me are kind of maybe Doctor Strange a little bit more but yeah
Starting point is 01:06:58 it's fine yes do you think I don't think there's enough weird shrinky stuff no yeah looks like the new one might be doing more of that stuff.
Starting point is 01:07:06 But yeah, got some good de-aging. That's true. That's essential from that perspective. Yeah. All right, but I think we've found our best one, Winter Soldier. Okay. Most essential, Guardians. Fair enough.
Starting point is 01:07:18 All right, let's go phase three. Okay. Captain America Civil War, off to the races, Mason. Big bang. Oh, I thought that was the subtitle captain america civil war off to the races this is probably the most essential yes i don't know if it's the best one though all right i have to think about this what's good about that movie i mean the airport fight i don't think it's as good as winter soldier though either we disagree on this I think but maybe
Starting point is 01:07:45 I have I don't know I'm on the fence very little sleep anyway I think I'm on the verge of maybe changing my mind Winter Soldier is a very good movie
Starting point is 01:07:54 but yeah Civil War is essential because we get origin of Spider-Man or we get the first appearance of Spider-Man yep that's true what else do we get
Starting point is 01:08:01 first appearance of Black Panther yep we get the splintering of the group that's yep tony stark gets a well-earned beating yes long time coming what are so long he seems to also regret and he's not as he seems to try to take responsibility for all the horrible things that he's done yep even just in these films yes like outside of all the bombs that he's built prior to this. Yeah. Because he, I love it because he built Ultron. Yes.
Starting point is 01:08:28 Well, I guess with Bruce Banner. I mean, he says he didn't. He says it was kind of an accident, but that's your fault. And he's trying to make everybody else sign a thing. Also, the Accords I find interesting because in the real world, yeah, you need something like that
Starting point is 01:08:41 to stop people running in and doing whatever in whatever country. But in the comic book universe, where everybody can be a robot or hydra or an alien or an alien then you there shouldn't be a set of rules in place that stop people from doing things there shouldn't be no there's there should be certain people who are above the law in the wow in the comic book universe wow because You are advocating for a vigilante. I'm saying just because it's a comic book world. Yes.
Starting point is 01:09:09 Anybody can be literally anybody else. Yeah. You can wear a hologram mask and you're a different person, you know, and then you've got a set of people in government who turns out most of them are Hydra. Right. Running the show and saying who Captain America is going to beat up. You need something separate from that okay it's independently wow in this universe okay i'm not saying in the real world okay wow
Starting point is 01:09:30 which is why i think he's wrong okay yeah i don't know if i agree with that i think there should be some rules yeah there's rules obviously but also you if it's in the hands of people like a captain america you can kind of trust him to do the right thing I mean for now but like I said you said anyone could be anything that's true yeah you can trust him until he becomes
Starting point is 01:09:49 a Hydra agent yeah see that's that's how secret empires happen James that's true because you're just like oh no let's all
Starting point is 01:09:56 trust Captain America and give him the keys to all the nuclear submarines who do you trust then you put no one not even yourself
Starting point is 01:10:04 yeah because what if you're a Skrull and you don't even know well that's exactly right what if you're a sleeper agent Who do you trust then? No one. Not even yourself. Because what if you're a Skrull and you don't even know? Well, that's exactly right. What if you're a sleeper agent? Yeah. What if you think you're a superhero and then somebody's like, Dusseldorf, hammock, bananas, cheese whiz, 23. And you kill your family.
Starting point is 01:10:22 Exactly. Yeah. You're not wrong. So somebody should be in charge. Yeah. 23 and you kill your family exactly yeah you're not wrong so somebody should be in charge yeah who a bloody committee
Starting point is 01:10:31 what no then you'd never get anything done like the shield committee it's run by Howard's booth what about what about the Illuminati
Starting point is 01:10:39 wait you mean the real world no I mean in the Marvel comics, there's a secret team of superhero higher-ups who are like, we've got to deal with this. I think that is a better idea than putting bureaucrats in charge in a cinematic universe.
Starting point is 01:10:56 Because also you balance it out because that's made up of Beast from the X-Men and Doctor Strange and Iron Man. It's got a bunch of different people, depending on what era. And they got a bunch of different people, depending on what era. And they've all got a different perspective, whether it be on mutant issues or magic or whatever's going on. Yes.
Starting point is 01:11:13 So, no, I'm not saying one guy, but you should just let Captain America do what he wants. All right, fine. Until he turns evil. And then we switch to whoever's left. Yeah. Bucky or whatever. Sure, the guy with real... They cleaned it up. I guess. They cleaned him up, mate. There's nothing left. Yeah. Bucky or whatever. Sure, the guy with real...
Starting point is 01:11:26 They cleaned it up. I guess. They cleaned him up, mate. There's nothing left in there. All right. Yeah. What do you want? Yeah, for now.
Starting point is 01:11:32 Until somebody uses a time stone or something and puts it all back in there. Or a mind stone. But somebody... Like, Doctor Strange could probably kill everybody in that committee if he wanted to. Probably shouldn't put him on the committee then. You suggested the Illuminati.
Starting point is 01:11:45 Anyway, I don't know. Yeah. Hot topic, Mason. Isn't it a hot topic? Yeah. Anyway, it's probably essential. Yes. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:11:52 There's no... Oh, there is an Infinity Stone because there's a vision. Yeah. Like, oh yeah, Age of Ultron has an Infinity Stone. Yeah. Who cares? It doesn't matter. It's firmly established.
Starting point is 01:12:00 Yeah. It's fine. No, I think it's important from a character perspective. Does Age of Ultron just have Thor going, there are many infinity stones and we're there's a swim yeah that's right and he sees them all yeah and there's lightning and the guys there terrific i love it it's great isn't it next up dr strange uh good for introducing magic but entirely inessential yeah i think so yeah i mean this is the time stone i get this yeah i absolutely get the sense that the powers of the time stone will be firmly established in infinity war correct so i don't think you get i don't think we need two hours of again firecracker kung fu yes in order
Starting point is 01:12:43 to establish that there is an Infinity Stone that controls time. Great visuals, though. Good visuals. In a weird mirror universe or whatever. Yep, that's true. And everything's bending in on itself. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 01:12:52 I mean, the bit where he's running down the corridor, but he can't. Yes, that's good. Do you like that bit? Yep, yep. Doing a classic run in place. Very funny. Very nice.
Starting point is 01:13:00 Yeah, and also that movie... His American accent's a little off-putting. Yeah, it's so generic. It's the house accent. It is. fact that the thor ragnarok has the post-credits sequence where thor says oh there are earth has wizards now yeah that's it yes that's literally all you need well you see him dr strange is also in it yeah that's what i mean yeah that's what i mean all right you said post-credits. Yeah, because the post-credits sequence in Doctor Strange
Starting point is 01:13:27 becomes that scene in Thor Ragnarok. Good point, Mason. So I think you don't have to see that. I don't think you have to see Doctor Strange. You can just watch
Starting point is 01:13:35 Thor Ragnarok. I like the change of heart that he has and the lessons that he learns. I think the strength of that movie is the firecracker kung fu. Right.
Starting point is 01:13:43 But also the way that he comes around on stuff. Yeah, for sure. The lesson that he learns. I think the strength of that movie is the firecracker kung fu. Right. But also the way that he comes around. Yeah, for sure. The lesson that he learns about what's important and all that kind of thing. And he kind of gives up being a really cool surgeon. That's true. To do firecracker kung fu.
Starting point is 01:13:54 The coolest job there is. Yeah, that's the coolest job. It's so rock and roll. What does he listen to? He listens to rock and roll music. He listens to cool jazz. Oh, that's so cool. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:14:02 And he knows all the cool jazz. He knows all the jazz. He's a cool jazz nerd. He. And he knows all the cool jazz. He knows all the jazz. He's a cool jazz nerd. He's like, oh, you don't know as many release dates as I do. Shut up. Glad you're in a car crash. Yeah, me too. I don't really.
Starting point is 01:14:15 No, that's bad. But it also, what else is, it has introduced like the dark dimension and multiple realities and time shifts and whatever. But only in the vaguest possible sense. But again, I agree. You don't... I think that movie's solid. Next up we have Guardians of the Galaxy 2.
Starting point is 01:14:32 I like it a lot. Yes. Mostly pointless. Because it's just them fighting Ego and they beat him and who cares. It's mostly pointless insofar as prior to that, we thought that Peter Quill was pretty much a normal guy, maybe a little bit different, and then he gains godlike powers for a minute,
Starting point is 01:14:51 and then he becomes a regular guy again. So that all may as well not have happened. Do you reckon that affects him on a date, like he feels more tired or something? Oh, absolutely. I mean, he had to have a connection to the planet, didn't he, to get any powers, but there was clearly something else going on, ticking away inside him. I mean, he had to have a connection to the planet, didn't he? To get any powers. But there was clearly something else going on, ticking away inside.
Starting point is 01:15:08 I like that movie a lot. But I can see why you could give it a miss. Yes. Yeah. I mean, we do get more Gamora and Nebula backstory. We also get the introduction of Mantis. Oh, yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:15:23 And we also get... But I mean, you could just say they picked him up on the way. Yes. Like, the appearance of Mantis in Infinity War is not going to change a whole heck of a lot of stuff. Also, we know from Guardians of the Galaxy 1 that Groot is going to grow back. Yes.
Starting point is 01:15:39 So the fact that he is back to being pretty much regular-sized Groot is fine. But a different guy. Different guy, yep. Yeah. And, again, you miss out on a lot of super regular sized Groot is fine. But a different guy. Different guy, yep. And again, you miss out on a lot of super fun baby Groot. Yes. And super fun movie in general. Yeah. But if you're going to infinity, it does matter. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:15:53 It does not matter. It's still a good one. Have we been noting down the essentials here? Yeah, probably. People, if somebody could, just go back. Please. This might be my favourite. Spider-Man Homecoming. Yes. I've only seen it once but I thoroughly enjoyed this back. Please. This might be my favorite. Spider-Man Homecoming. Yes. I've only seen it once, but I thoroughly enjoyed this film. Yes.
Starting point is 01:16:10 From just a... I mean, I like Civil War a lot, but just a breezy kid in over his head. Yes. Great. The really good use of the character that adheres to the comic in the best way. Yes. He's really believable as Spider-Man. The villain's great. There's no big stone that shoots a laser.
Starting point is 01:16:29 It's not essential. He's not fighting Venom or another character who also has spider powers. No, he's fighting, what's his bloody name? The Vulture. Michael Keaton. Michael Keaton. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:16:40 Because he could easily go Civil War and then Infinity War. Yeah, for sure. In terms of that character. But even the introduction, like even putting Robert Downey Jr., I think it is a mentor role is a really, even though he's a super hypocrite and a real son of a bitch. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:16:58 But no, and you think the new suit that he's got is just like, you don't think it's got any of the tech? I think post, at the end of Spider-Man Homecoming, the Spider-Man suit he takes out of the paper bag is just a regular suit. Or he probably does the thing where it sticks to you or whatever. Yeah, for sure. You think there's no kill mode or whatever? No, I think it's absolute minimalist.
Starting point is 01:17:17 It also does a good job to establish the Spider-Man universe in a way that's different than what they've done before, but without beating you over the head about what's coming next there's little hints towards like miles morales and like gwen stacy and stuff like that and the mary jane thing i felt a real kind of throwaway i didn't like that it was just like people call me mj okay all right all right oh yeah like it's it's a non-twist it's just like who yeah for sure, right. But also, she might not really be Mary Jane. They've kind of established that as well. Okay, wow. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:17:47 Wow. But no, I think this is great. Do you like Thor Ragnarok? Yes, very much so. But do you think it's essential? Oh, no. Okay, what happens in it then? He's stuck in space.
Starting point is 01:18:03 He gets a haircut. He beats up... The Hulk. and everyone sister he beats up everyone he beats up everybody and uh way more power than you think asgard's destroyed as guys i don't think he's that much more powerful though really he just found the power the hulk he just finds the power within himself yeah but i think he could have beaten up the hulk anyway but he but he seemed to i think his strength has increased a lot in this hello buddy how are you did you have fun at the shops cool he said no i think from like emotionally like the emotional weight of that film is not there's not much to it yeah it's just it's a very funny film oh yeah for sure yeah good soundtrack yes it's true. So Claire's just wrestling with the kid.
Starting point is 01:18:45 Oh, no. He's crying now. He wanted to come in and play with a dog and be on the podcast. Not allowed. Oh, wow, never? It seems like a lot to put on a kid. That's true. I don't think he's seen most of these movies.
Starting point is 01:18:59 Yeah, that's true. Hey, mate. See you, mate. No, he's all right. He's doing all right. It's a fun film. Yes. And Asgard's destroyed, but who cares? Yeah. Yeah. Hey, mate. See you, mate. No, he's all right. He's doing all right. It's a fun film. Yes. And Asgard's destroyed, but who cares?
Starting point is 01:19:09 Yeah. Yeah. Oh, yeah, exactly. And I mean... Hey, Ollie. Hey, mate. I don't like it as much as everybody else likes it. Oh, yeah, okay.
Starting point is 01:19:16 And I think that's also the same for Black Panther. Because it's... There's a lot of stuff going on in Black Panther. This is the last one, obviously. I mean, maybe not. Maybe it's not obvious. Oh, I should have said should have said spoilers i guess i mean people don't know don't they i don't even know okay good good no it's a lot of similar stuff and a guy fights another guy and the same suit as him and whatever yeah the character stuff's really good and yes
Starting point is 01:19:39 and the cast itself is something we hadn't seen before. And obviously people went in droves to see it. It's outperformed so many of these films that you wouldn't think it would. Like you think it was going to be... I thought it was going to do like Ant-Man numbers or Guardians of the Galaxy, but it's bloody exceeded expectations. Where do you settle on it? We've only seen it a few months ago. I like it a lot.
Starting point is 01:20:02 But is it essential? If you see Civil War, you know who Black Panther is. And then if you went straight to Infinity War, then it's... Yes, exactly. Yeah. Not essential. Not essential. But good.
Starting point is 01:20:12 Very good. Good rhinos. Okay, so what was essential in this one? I've forgotten. I think it's establishing Wakanda. Oh, what was the essential movie? I think it's Civil War. Civil War.
Starting point is 01:20:21 Okay, cool. But again, it depends if you go Winter Soldier, Civil War. Because I think you'd have to... Both of those two together right if you went sorry i think no it's guardians of galaxy civil war yeah is that right yes i mean what is right what is right indeed and what is love oh baby don't hurt me okay so what's your favorite from phase three oh do you want the list yeah give me the list Civil War Doctor Strange Guardians 2 Spider-Man Thor Black Panther ah
Starting point is 01:20:47 it would for me to be it's either Civil War or Spider-Man I think sure yeah just because they're both so much fun
Starting point is 01:20:54 but different but different but I think the one I go back to the most is probably Civil War fair enough agree to slightly disagree
Starting point is 01:21:03 Mason yeah plus Civil War has that sweet ad for Milo in it. Does it? On a wall. It does too. At the start when they're in... Guatemala or somewhere.
Starting point is 01:21:12 Wherever they are, yeah. Panama. Panama. Have you seen Lost in Space? Yes. There's a Panama moment. Oh. But you've seen it all?
Starting point is 01:21:21 No. Well, then never mind. I won't spoil it for you. Okay then. There's a Panama moment. All in all, Mason. Another, then never mind. I won't spoil it for you. Okay, then. It was a Panama moment. All in all, Mason. Another brick in the wall. Okay, pick the most essential and your favorite.
Starting point is 01:21:30 Okay. All the movies. All of them. Okay. Most essential is probably the first Avengers movie, right? Yes, it is. I think so. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:21:39 Oof. I guess if we could only pick one, but that is quite the leap. If you just went, I'll watch the first Avengers movie, and then you went to Infinity War. There's a lot in between. There's a lot in between. But you wouldn't go Age of Ultron. No, absolutely not.
Starting point is 01:21:52 Or Civil War. But I think a lot of people are going to go First Avengers. Yeah, Civil War. No, I think a lot of people are just going to go Avengers, Age of Ultron, Infinity War, because they're the three Avengers movies. Yeah, right. And they're like, well, I better get these Avengers movies out of the way.
Starting point is 01:22:06 Could you get a solid grounding just with those two? I think so. I think you'd probably want to swap out the second Avengers with Civil War. I think you'd probably want to go, yeah, first Avengers, Civil War, and then the next Avengers. Because good or bad, it's the stuff that you probably need to know when it comes out. Yeah, for sure.
Starting point is 01:22:23 Yeah. Okay, well, if I have to pick one it's Avengers I guess for essential not favourite what's your favourite? Civil War okay I'm going to say Winter Soldier I'd love to hear what people think though
Starting point is 01:22:37 what's your essential one from each phase and your favourites and if we've missed something remember in Thor The Dark World when this happens? You've got to factor that in. Did you say for the post-credits
Starting point is 01:22:50 in Thor The Dark World? What happens? There's a cat, like a big cat monster and it knocks over a shipping container or whatever, chasing birds. Really? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:22:58 But before that, Thor comes back to Earth and him and Jane make out. Nice. But then they break up and he hooks up with the valkyrie no he doesn't no there's some tension let me tell you he wants to yes great all in all may soon it's been 10 years hasn't it remember how remember how young and free we were yes i
Starting point is 01:23:16 mean you're still relatively free young and free you're not burdened are you just like our national anthem i'm young and free all right and you're girt by sea yes like our national anthem, I'm young and free, all right? And you're girt by sea. Yes. Just like our national anthem. Good stuff. You know what it's time for then? Ah, what are we reading? What are we going to read? Yes. I'm doing the thing.
Starting point is 01:23:37 What are we reading today? Well, I'm a few episodes into Lost in Space. And? I'm liking it a lot. Yeah. I think it's good. I agree. episodes into lost in space and i'm liking it a lot yeah it's good i agree it feels very like i can't i have no particular love for or memory of i mean the movie absolutely gary oldman turns into a spider but certainly not the uh the tv series originally which seems super camp but this really
Starting point is 01:23:59 feels like swiss family robinson a family surviving in a hostile environment. How many are you in? Four. Okay. Is it established that there is more or less people on this planet than you'd think? There's currently a couple more than you'd think. Okay, cool. Yeah. You're saying there's heaps more.
Starting point is 01:24:18 I'm saying more or less because maybe they're not people, Mason. Wow. I mean, they are. What do you think of the robot? It's pretty cool. Do you think he's a sexy robot? No. People would call it like the shape of water robot, like a sexy robot.
Starting point is 01:24:31 I don't think it's not much sexy about that robot. It's also really clear when that robot is a CGI robot and a man in a suit. Yes, that's true, yeah. Which is okay. I mean, of course, that's less expensive to build the suit. But it looks great as well as a series. Some of those scenes in the forest look great. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:24:49 It seems like they put money into it, which is good. Do you like all the characters? Do you like the dad? Is he the villain in Die Another Day where he shoots electricity? Is he? He might be. All right, you should check. You should check.
Starting point is 01:25:00 Lost in Space Car. You see anything else? No, just the Blues Brothers again. Okay. Yeah. And? It was good. Did you like the car crash?
Starting point is 01:25:11 Yes. You're a car crash. What do you think of that? Oh, come on, my God. Got you. Got you, Mason. Bloody hell. All right, let me find this guy.
Starting point is 01:25:15 His name is Toby Stephens, or Stephens with a PH. And he is... He is in Die Another Day. I knew it. He's a guy. He's secretly Korean. Yeah. Remember when he gets the... Is is in Die Another Day. I knew it. He's a guy. He's secretly Korean. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:25:27 Remember when he gets the... Is he Diamond Face? No. The other guy's Diamond Face. He's the son of the dictator or whatever. Right. Son of Diamond Face. Yeah, he has the... Yeah, sure.
Starting point is 01:25:36 Oh, and he has the electric suit. You've got the electric suit where you can see the electricity. Is that not Diamond Face? No, that's a different guy. Oh. Because the other guy's the son of the dictator or whatever. I'm confident that guy's also Diamond Face. I bet you... Because where's Diamondface? No, that's a different guy. Oh. Because the other guy's the son of the dictator or whatever. I'm confident that guy's also Diamondface. I bet you.
Starting point is 01:25:48 Because where's Diamondface? Diamondface is in the process of getting his face de-diamond. Oh, okay, right. And that guy's already had it. And apparently as a result of getting all the treatment to make you British. Yes. What a fucking stupid movie. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:26:01 That made him mad and he doesn't sleep. Yeah, right. And he models himself off James Bond. Yeah, right. And people are like, who is this guy that's just showed up out of nowhere? This 35-year-old man we've never seen before and nobody has any memories of. Nobody asked that question. I saw Isle of Dogs.
Starting point is 01:26:18 Oh, yeah. Or Isle of Dogs. I should get to that. Yeah, it's good. Isle of Dogs. Yeah, it's good. I mean, don't take a kid okay because it's not really a kid's film so did you do that did you make that mistake no i didn't think so i
Starting point is 01:26:30 didn't think you would have and it was it was interesting because it was almost it was like a meditative movie because it's very kind of slow moving and it's like quiet a lot of the time there's a little bit of music and and whatever but everybody was really kind of silent and just kind of letting it kind of wash over them and the audience were yeah everybody was really kind of silent and just kind of letting it kind of wash over them and the audience were yeah it was really surprising but uh i know i really enjoyed it and i love that animation style and every and claire said is it stop motion or is it cgi stop motion yeah like every every frame is it's like it looks like an artwork yeah right they really go out of their way to make it unique and would you say it's problematic in terms of the the setting set in japan yes look this is not my area
Starting point is 01:27:11 sure i'm gonna delve in here we go i think it depends on your perspective i guess it's not i think it represents japanese culture really well and the reason that they did the western voices for the dogs and left it as Japanese for the rest of the cast. So in terms of the audience, you feel that alienation where you understand what the dogs are, but you don't understand Japanese just the way the dogs don't. Right, okay, sure. That's the purpose behind it, is my understanding. But it didn't bother me. Does it feel like Wes Anderson loves Japan
Starting point is 01:27:45 there's a lot of that yeah okay right okay well that's alright it's not yeah it's definitely not you know like Mickey Rooney reference activities
Starting point is 01:27:52 they get all Japanese actors and uh for the Japanese parts like Yoko Ono's in it and a bunch of other people but yeah I can see where people are coming from
Starting point is 01:28:00 but it's not it's not a slap in the face to Japanese culture yeah right unless maybe you think it is which is also fine. Yeah. I haven't seen it, but I'm saying it is.
Starting point is 01:28:08 Okay, then. Nah, just kidding. Ready for the next segment? Oh, letters. Yeah. Yeah, probably. The classic one was letters, oh letters. We love you, some letters.
Starting point is 01:28:21 They're only a day away. I know they're here right now we're gonna do letters get ready everybody for a high energy finish oh did we mention the bloody live show we talked about the live show
Starting point is 01:28:33 we did it we talked about it last week oh yeah probably talked about it last week we had a good time after we did it yeah alright cool fine how do you feel about it now I liked it
Starting point is 01:28:39 that's also up on the Patreon if people want it oh yeah it's there so you can go listen to it it's all there. Hey, this is... I'll find another better letter.
Starting point is 01:28:48 But for now, this is still a good letter. Thanks to Nate for this letter. All right. Speaking of Denny's... Here we go. Just wanted to include some of the menu items for the aforementioned Denny's promo menus. Hope you guys are craving some of the Thingburgers as much as me.
Starting point is 01:29:01 So he sent a... It's a slam-tastic breakfast. This is a promo thing. What is that? It says, brace yourself in your taste buds for the delicious new menu inspired by the Fantastic Four. So this came out around FanFourStick time.
Starting point is 01:29:18 There's a human torch skillet. Pretty good. Has it got hot sauce or whatever? Yeah, it's got some chili in it, I think. There's the thing burger. Pretty good. Has it got hot sauce or whatever? Yeah, it's got some chilli in it, I think, yeah. There's the Thing Burger. Pretty good. Is it like a big piece of crispy chicken or something? The Thing?
Starting point is 01:29:32 Yeah. That's just a regular burger, it seems. What? The burger seems quite craggy and thing-like. Okay. It looks just like an old burger bun, I think. Is the Mr. Fantastic just a ball of chewed gum? Well, look, the next one's the Invisible Woman Slam,
Starting point is 01:29:44 which seems quite visible and also a weird thing to say. But then there's the Fantastic Four Cheese Omelette. So Reed Richards doesn't even get a look in. Doesn't get a gig, mate. Doesn't get a look in. They're like, nah, he's too boring. Even for deadies.
Starting point is 01:29:58 Oh, that's great. I got a tweet here. If you want to reach the show... You can also get the Red, White and Blue Slam, which is related to Independence Day resurgence. God damn it. We salute our troops. My God.
Starting point is 01:30:08 With a slam. If you want to reach the show, hashtag WeeklyPlanetPod on Twitter or WeeklyPlanetPod at gmail.com. Would you eat a maple bacon sundae? No. Okay, all right. Would you?
Starting point is 01:30:17 No, then we're not visiting Denny's for a while. This is from Alex on Twitter. Hot scoop or shot of poop? I've heard someone who works on the Black Panther films that the Fantastic Four will be introduced in the MCU
Starting point is 01:30:28 through Black Panther 2 mirroring Black Panther's first appearance in the comics and that cartoon yeah right wow thoughts didn't that would be
Starting point is 01:30:36 a good introduction I think that would be cool yeah you could make it good I guess you could make it good yeah but in the sense that the Fantastic Four
Starting point is 01:30:44 go to Wakanda and challenge him or they or it was good yeah but in the sense that the fantastic four go to wakanda and challenge him or they or it was the other way in the comic yeah he lures them he lures them in yeah yeah no i don't like it you'd have to change a lot of it yeah you could have them have their first meeting together for sure you could have them in wakanda for some reason yeah i don't know he wants a pair of stretchy, stretchy pants. Maybe they're in Wakanda, they're working on some sort of dimensional technology. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 01:31:09 They crack open a portal and then the Fantastic Four fly through. Hello! Hello! And maybe he deems them a threat and then they fight in a weird metal jungle or whatever happens to that. Exactly.
Starting point is 01:31:19 Got another letter, Mason? Oh, yeah, this is from Theo James. Okay. Just wanted to ask James' opinion as a dad. Hello. What age does he think it best to force your kids to watch the Marvel films and other franchises like maybe a Star Wars? You don't want to show them when they're too young
Starting point is 01:31:33 to understand, but if you leave it too late they'll probably hear spoilers and watch movie clips on YouTube out of order. I don't think kids care about that. Do you remember caring about spoilers as a kid? I used to read the novelisation of books before I saw them. I would read the novelizations before seeing the movie as well. I've read the novelization of the movie Stargate, but I've never seen Stargate. Wow.
Starting point is 01:31:50 What do you imagine it was like? I imagined it was really good. How did you imagine James Spader looking? Not like he does now. Yes. You're not wrong. I don't think I knew who James Spader was in the 90s. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:32:03 He was trim, man. That's true. Yeah. Okay. Five? I was in the 90s. Yeah. He was trim, man. That's true. Yeah. Okay, I guess my question would be, do you regret seeing movies out of order? Not as a kid. Right. I don't care. But like currently, is there any big franchise you saw out of order?
Starting point is 01:32:19 Did you see the Star Wars movies out of order originally? No, I don't think so. I saw Back to the Future 1, 3, 2. Okay. But that didn't really... Does it concern you at all? No. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Not at all. I mean, I don't even, I don't really remember when or how I saw things. I just kind of, I just know I've seen Star Wars. I don't remember the first time I saw Star Wars. I saw The Empire Strikes Back a lot more because we had that on VHS. Yeah. Yeah, but what about you? Do you think fandom is accelerating to a point though that kids have to see things in order i think for kids it doesn't
Starting point is 01:32:50 matter for young kids i don't i don't think they care yeah i think you might you might be right as someone as a dad and as someone who is a teacher most and yeah yeah officially actually i think i've been deregistered uh-oh i should probably check that out in case I have to pack all this in yeah right if we don't hit $100,000 oh what you know what I'll do
Starting point is 01:33:09 if we don't hit $100,000 we'll keep the money oh yeah cool that sounds really that sounds we're going to jail for this
Starting point is 01:33:15 I'm okay with that yeah oh just to clarify that money doesn't go anywhere near us it goes into a separate account it doesn't go through us
Starting point is 01:33:22 no that's right everyday heroes set it up set up a really cool page. Yeah. I think maybe the key here is don't force your kids into watching an NES.
Starting point is 01:33:29 Yeah, absolutely. I think so, yeah. I've been trying to not do that with Mikey, but a lot of other people give him stuff. They're like... He's got a lot of Batman merch.
Starting point is 01:33:37 He does have a lot of Batman merch. He's got, like yesterday or the other day, he's got a functioning Batmobile. He's got a functioning 1989 Batmobile with like a kerosene burner out the back. He's singed himself so many times.
Starting point is 01:33:48 But he loves it. Yeah, he loves it. The other day, I bought him a little basketball ring so we play basketball together. So I just... Oh, yeah, forcing him into sport. No, I played basketball when I was a kid. But if he wants to play it,
Starting point is 01:33:59 I want him to kind of gravitate towards what he wants. And I'm kind of paranoid that he's just going to... Because apparently the first kid in a family will copy the parents more. And the second one, which is what I am, will just kind of do their own thing. Right. Yeah. Or copy the older kid. You'll copy the older kid, yeah.
Starting point is 01:34:16 Did you copy your sister? No. You're both tram drivers, aren't you? Yeah, correct. That's right. That's what I thought, yeah. No, I think five's okay to probably start. Is there any you wouldn't let him see
Starting point is 01:34:25 do you think like the Hulk Incredible Hulk's pretty he's pretty scary I don't know if you'd want to start I think that's that's not a fun kids movie
Starting point is 01:34:33 no yeah no unessential inessential completely inessential but there's scary moments in all of them
Starting point is 01:34:39 I think the part you know where you know where Bruce Banner gets really upset in the first Avengers movie and he turns into the Hulk and chases Black Widow all about the place. Sure. That would be scary for a kid, right?
Starting point is 01:34:51 Absolutely. Yeah. Yeah. Hey, buddy. You having fun? He was. He's tired. Yeah, he's tired.
Starting point is 01:34:58 No, you're all right, Clay. Don't worry about it. Claire's put on sunglasses as if to pretend she's cool but she's got a kid so she's not cool anymore she's not fooling anybody yeah who's cooler out of me or claire but look at this look at this it's probably claire to me i raised an eyebrow yeah i know she was raising two eyebrows and she's got sunglasses that's right yeah i don't yeah I think
Starting point is 01:35:26 five to six is alright but you could probably pick or choose I think it's also a question of some of them would be very boring I'd imagine if you
Starting point is 01:35:32 showed a kid Iron Man 3 they would not enjoy that or Iron Man 1 yeah probably yeah but I think you could go Avengers after the first
Starting point is 01:35:40 20 minutes oh it's non-stop action yeah they would love that and stuff like that yeah also maybe like I think there's like a you could you could show them like teen titans go or like i think there's like a tiny avengers or something sure yeah you maybe yeah start them on that well as when i was a kid like when you were a kid also we're both kids yeah like the the movies like this
Starting point is 01:36:01 the big movies were like your terminators yourators, you're Robocops. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You're Lethal Weapons, which is kind of at a harder edge. Yes. But it's kind of, it's a bit different now. They're a bit like those kind of films don't do as well commercially. Yeah, right. It would seem. But they've got that Lethal Weapon TV series. Got another letter, Mason?
Starting point is 01:36:18 Look, I'll give you one more because I just saw this and it intrigued me. This is Star Wars related. Okay. This is from Kamail. Loves the show. Thanks, buddy. Appreciate it. You know how
Starting point is 01:36:27 dead eyes, dead Jedis, can come back in ghost form and just talk to people? Yeah. So with Kylo Ren obsessing over Vader, why doesn't Anakin
Starting point is 01:36:34 just show up and be like, hey man, stop. Stop doing this. Maybe he wants him to. Whoa. I think it's dependent at the moment.
Starting point is 01:36:42 Because he's got the skills. He's got the skills. We've seen him come back to do it. I think it's also dependent on who. Because he's got the skills. He's got the skills. We've seen him come back to do it. I think it's also dependent on who that person is linked to. I see. And who can see them. Because there's not really, it's not clear about who they can appear to or if everybody can see them.
Starting point is 01:36:56 That kind of stuff was established in Legends, but it's not, it hasn't been re-established firmly. Oh, I see. Maybe Luke can see Yoda because he knows yoda but maybe ray can't see yoda right yeah or maybe she can you know because if mace windu shows up to lecture ray she's gonna be like i don't know who you are okay you have to have a significant connection good thing okay sure right also they're mostly wrong the ghosts when they show up but isn't kylo is an's grandson, right?
Starting point is 01:37:25 Yes. Okay. But they haven't met. Okay, right. Yeah. I'm not saying he can't, but also Anakin seems like the kind of guy that wouldn't. Yeah, right.
Starting point is 01:37:32 Okay. Just wouldn't intervene. Thanks. I don't know. What do you think? Well, it would certainly solve a lot of problems, but I think that if we're looking for an explanation as to why that hasn't happened and wrap things up very neatly,
Starting point is 01:37:44 that is perfect. Okay, good. Excellent. There's a lot of plot holes in everything, though. There sure is. Let's not think about it too hard. Let's think about it too much. Okay.
Starting point is 01:37:52 Nick says on Twitter, which movies that have come out in the past 10 years or so do you guys think will be looked upon as classics in the future? Last 10 years? Last 10 years. Ooh. I can think of recently, probably like Get Out. Yep. Probably up there. That's very much a good one. The movie Sunshine is just over 10 years, Ooh. I can think of recently, like probably like Get Out. Yep. Probably up there. It's very much a good one.
Starting point is 01:38:06 The movie Sunshine is just over 10 years, unfortunately. Come on, mate. Come on. It's just, I think Nolan's stuff probably, what's the one where they're in a hallway? Inception.
Starting point is 01:38:16 Yeah. That's a good one. Probably look back as a classic. I think Interstellar might come around again. No, I don't think that's a classic at all. I think you're a classic. Wow.
Starting point is 01:38:23 I think Dunkirk will be better regarded than Interstellar. I can definitely, I can say that, sure. And it'll take, you know, a couple of, you know, it'll take probably 10 years before people can determine which character is which in that movie. So once they've done that. Then it's perfect. There's also movies that probably go the other way.
Starting point is 01:38:42 Yes. Like who knows if Shape of Water is going to hold up. Yeah, right. For sure. I enjoy that a lot. But you can't really tell from the outset. Because then if you look at movies like The Artist, who talks about that? Nobody.
Starting point is 01:38:56 I'm not saying that's a crap film. I haven't seen it. But I mean, that's out of our circle completely. I'm just talking classics in general. Yeah, right, right. Okay, yeah. Yeah. You know, because then you get
Starting point is 01:39:05 a movie like crash winning the oscars and everyone's like this was the worst movie ever made yeah exactly modern classic films oh do you think there's like any been any doesn't seem to be any like classic westerns or classic and there used to be like religious epics and shit like that like a like a passion of the christ kind of situation yeah i don't think that's well regarded either i haven't seen i meant more like ben hurd oh yeah for situation. Yeah. I don't think that's well regarded either. I haven't seen it. I meant more like Ben Hur. Oh, yeah, for sure.
Starting point is 01:39:29 Okay, right, right. I don't know. I think there's just so many movies coming out now. Mad Max. I think that's going to be a classic. Fury Road, that's going to be a classic. I would also say maybe like one of the Raid movies, probably the second one. Sure.
Starting point is 01:39:39 As just in terms of just spectacular action. Sure. Yeah. Okay, what about Ong three no not on back three two no one yes okay good remember he leaves that pane of glass or whatever he does for i was just looking here it's got the matrix but that i would say that's a bit further back that's 99 and it's also it probably is a classic oh yeah that's currently i would say that's currently a classic yeah this is relatively this is a bit outside of 10 years, but I think Casino Royale.
Starting point is 01:40:07 Yep, absolutely. I think that's the pinnacle of James Bonding. I agree. I completely agree. Yes. Yeah, I don't know. I'd be interested to see what people consider classics. Actually, also, I would as well.
Starting point is 01:40:18 Let us know. On Twitter. What about Alfie, the reboot? With starring Jude Law. Yeah, absolutely. He's ladding about. Maybe his dick doesn't work, but then it does. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:40:27 He's okay. It's a sad film. I don't think I talked about it recently. I remember it being fun, but it's mostly him having a cold and being sad. Yeah, it really is. All right, that's the end of the show. We did it. Mason, it's very exciting.

Starting point is 01:43:16 a purpley pinky red so there we go we're all right mason yes but it's like that dress beetroot the color of the dress was beetroot and the vision is beetroot all right yep god is that everything that's the whole show and if you could tell a friend that would be great that'd be great yeah but tell them a good thing tell them a good thing and also maybe don't tell a friend who already listens yeah because that's going to be annoying to them yeah and they're going to quit listening which is the opposite of what we want correct you have done us a disservice disservice there and quite frankly if you could stop listening as well no wait don't no get that friend back we need this yes all right grab that gem you guys
