Starting point is 00:00:00 This podcast is part of the Planet Broadcasting Network. Visit planetbroadcasting.com for more podcasts from our great mates. This episode is brought to you by Casper Mattresses. Mmm, the mattress with the mosterist. I said that before the show. I know, and I stole it. That's mine. That was my best joke and you took it from me.
Starting point is 00:00:16 There's no evidence to say otherwise, is there? Red hot comic book movie news. Shootin' up your butthole The Weekly Planet, The Weekly Planet Oh my god, it's The Weekly Planet. Now that may be, you can take that expression in relation to a religious experience or a figure of speech. This intro's not good. No, it's great.
Starting point is 00:00:39 I don't like this new intro. Do the old intro. Welcome back everybody to another episode of The Weekly Planet Where we talk movies and comics and TV shows My name is James, also known as Mr. Sunday With me as always my co-host Nick Mason But Wednesday is going to be an international men's The Weekly Planet The podcast where we discuss movies and TV shows and comic books That's a great point
Starting point is 00:00:55 This is for everybody Mason It's inclusive or exclusive It's whatever It's not exclusive, it's free For now Hey, listen up Mason Luke Perry's dead Or exclusive. It's whatever. It's not exclusive. It's free. It's free. It's not exclusive. For now. Hey, listen up, Mason. Yes.
Starting point is 00:01:08 Luke Perry's dead. Oh. Yeah. It's not for him then. No, definitely not. 52 is very young to die. He had a stroke, I think. Yeah. 52, that's too young for a stroke.
Starting point is 00:01:16 But apparently it's very, very common. Oh, no. Yeah. So there's obviously warning signs. Wow. I could potentially have a stroke in 31 years. Yes, that's very possible. Because I'm 21 or a different age.
Starting point is 00:01:28 Yes, Mason, you're 21 or a different age. That's right. Yeah. But no, he was hospitalized with a stroke and he just kind of never bounced back from it. That's a shame. One of the good things that happens when someone dies, Mason, is that a lot of stories flood out about that particular person.
Starting point is 00:01:43 Well, I saw on Twitter, you know, hashtag Luke Perry. I'm like, oh no, what's happened? What's he done? What's he done? I hope he's dead, you said. Oh boy. But yeah, and again, like what happens is all the stories surface, whether they are good or bad.
Starting point is 00:01:57 And every single one of these was good. There was one where he entertained a kid on a flight who was freaking out with a balloon. He just brings balloons. The story was that there was a kid having a, or maybe a couple of kids having a tantrum on a flight who was freaking out with a balloon. He just brings balloons. The story was that there was a kid having a, or maybe a couple of kids having a tantrum on a plane. And the family were helpless and they couldn't do anything. And Luke Perry comes out of first class,
Starting point is 00:02:15 like blowing up a balloon and just be like, kid, check this out. And the kid calmed right down, presumably because he was like, oh my God, that's Luke Perry from 90210. What was your first exposure to Luke Perry? Mum's The's buffy okay right the movie the movie yeah okay yeah yeah i just had psycho luke perry that's right yeah for sure shot through the jars of acid and that's right yeah so he's obviously obviously got a good sense of humor about himself and
Starting point is 00:02:39 more recently he was obviously on um he was going to come back to 90210 there was going to be some kind of reboot happening okay right but yeah he was he was archie's was going to come back to 90210 there was going to be some kind of reboot happening but yeah he was Archie's dad in Riverdale yeah sexy dad yeah he was so sexy it's a shame when someone's sexy dies
Starting point is 00:02:51 it's the worst I agree yeah so look the outpouring of support has been really great and obviously the good stories
Starting point is 00:02:58 are always good to hear when something passes away if you have a good Luke Perry story let us know let us know also he had great sideburns.
Starting point is 00:03:06 That's true. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. In an era when... People didn't have sideburns, but then everybody had sideburns. Then everybody had sideburns. Because Luke Perry did.
Starting point is 00:03:13 His sideburns were the Rachel of facial hair. That's not untrue. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Do you think Ross is the worst friend? Ah, good question. He is. No, but I read something recently
Starting point is 00:03:24 that Ross was like the victim of like an anti-intellectualism like backlash but he's not particularly intelligent i mean he's but he's good in his like field yeah yeah but at the every joke was like you know you're bloody oh you're a paleontologist why don't you shove some dinosaur bones up your ass or whatever like it was all it wasn't that why doesn't he though it's true but it was just like you're a you're a dumbass because you're an you know you're you're you're you've got a doctorate or whatever and it's like what do you guys do yeah none of you do anything you've all just lucked into your jobs exactly he at least tried something but apparently there was an article that was basically like he was at the forefront of this rise of anti-intellectualism of like, let's mock smart people. Oh, right.
Starting point is 00:04:12 Let's just celebrate dumb people. That is definitely still around though, I would say. Oh, yeah, for sure. And I think it started way before him. Yeah, probably. But he's still a shit bloke. Yeah, he's the worst friend for sure. I mean, imagine it.
Starting point is 00:04:23 Look at his dumb job. Why does he stick a dinosaur bone up his ass? I always thought. You know? So what if they're on a break or whatever that storyline was? Yeah, right. Wait, who's a worst friend, though? Name a worst friend.
Starting point is 00:04:34 I just think because he's intelligent in that particular area, but I don't think he's intelligent in general. Yeah. And he's real smug about it. Yeah. Yeah. No, there isn't a worst friend. Is Joey a worst friend?
Starting point is 00:04:44 I don't know. They're all good. He can't help it. He can't help it because he's a smug about it. Yeah. Yeah. Now, there isn't a worst friend. Is Joey a worst friend? I don't know. I think he's... They're all good. He can't help it. He can't help it because he's a dummy, Mason. Yeah, that's probably true. Anyway. Anyway, Ross, worst friend.
Starting point is 00:04:52 Yeah, good. Let's rank the friends later. Stick a dinosaur bone up your ass, Ross. Exactly. If you're listening. Shazam 2 got a second trailer. Shazam 2 got a second trailer? Shazam 2 got a second trailer.
Starting point is 00:05:02 The first ones haven't even out yet. Oh, no, Mason. I've caught none with misspeaking you've done and I'm mocking you for it. You bloody rinsed me for it. That's right. Yeah so. Is this the third? Maybe there was an international trailer. It's probably a teaser and a yeah okay.
Starting point is 00:05:19 It's mostly like the other trailer. I feel there's a few extra bits. I wonder how much we are. I wonder how much we are I wonder how much of this movie we've already seen and how much is left
Starting point is 00:05:29 to reveal to us well here's the thing though it was screened earlier this week for some Hollywood types in the Hollywood world of Hollywood and again this never
Starting point is 00:05:36 means anything because it changes but everybody stood up and applauded everybody loved it like all the journalists that went were like
Starting point is 00:05:42 this is because they were aiming for big and they're like this is big this is like a really fantastic funny heartfelt action well we wondered before the show what if this is the best superman movie that doesn't have superman in it and it probably is probably is yeah yeah i hope it is but i'm wondering like in the sense of like deadpool was flipping the genre on his head it was flipping the genre on his head. It was flipping the genre on his head, but also realistically that movie was one action sequence broken up.
Starting point is 00:06:09 It was two action sequences, one of which was broken up over the first hour of the film. And they just did some non-linear storytelling to make it look as if it wasn't just two action sequences. What if Shazam is just... Because so far it seems to be he defends his friend and then he goes on the run for some bullies and then he goes to the subway and he meets the Wizard Shazam
Starting point is 00:06:29 and he gets his powers, then he tests his powers, then he meets Dr. Sivana on the street and Dr. Sivana beats him up. Gets rattled. And then that's pretty much the end? I guess he rallies. I guess he rallies. There's some stuff that's been spoiled.
Starting point is 00:06:41 If you've read, I think, some of the newer stuff that happens. I'm not going to... In the comic books. Yeah, I'm not going to go any more specific than that. Okay, good call. But there are some action beats towards the end, which it seems like you might not be familiar with. But for me, like a lot of the time,
Starting point is 00:06:56 you kind of know where a movie's going. But if I enjoy the characters, I don't think about it. That's true. It doesn't really bother me if I know what's happening. Yeah. Yeah. Also, why does Dr. Sivana have slightly different lightning powers than Shazam? That's a good question.
Starting point is 00:07:10 Isn't it? Maybe you got them from a different wizard. Exactly. That's all I'm saying. Maybe you got it from Kazam. Yes. The rapping genie. The rapping genie.
Starting point is 00:07:19 There's a really grisly scene where he drains all of Kazam's life force. really grisly scene where he drains all of Shazam's life, uh, Kazam's life force. And he, and he just, we, we see Shaq turn into a puddle of meat and bones on the ground as Savannah drains his life force so he can get zappy powers.
Starting point is 00:07:34 If you were wondering when Shazam is coming out, Mason, it's April 5th. Oh, it is in the US at least. So that's only three or so weeks away, a bit over. So that's exciting,
Starting point is 00:07:43 isn't it? So we'll see that one. It's all happening. And then I think we've got Hellboy and then it's Avengers Endgame. And then other movies probably. You know what I mean? No more movies after Endgame.
Starting point is 00:07:52 Yeah, that's true. It's the Endgame, isn't it? It's the Endgame. It's the last movie, right? That's right. That's exactly it. But no, I was kind of... Do you think that Endgame
Starting point is 00:08:01 is going to be the jumping off point for a lot of people with Marvel movies? We've talked about that. Yeah. And it's potentially, yes. I think, I know, well, after Spider-Man Homecoming, there's going to be like a 10-month break. But there also was after Ant-Man and the Wasp, I want to say.
Starting point is 00:08:17 There's a fairly big break between that and Captain Marvel. Yeah, right. So I guess it depends what they set up. It depends who's left. It depends what's happening on the streaming shows. But I know I feel like after Endgame, I'll probably feel like I want a bit of a break. Because I felt like that when Ant-Man and the Wasp
Starting point is 00:08:33 kind of rolled around in hindsight. I also think Homecoming, Far From Home rather, will be a bit of a break because it seems pretty breezy. They're literally going on a holiday in the movie. And I think it'll just be kind of breezy and kind of like, I want to save my friends. Cool, I'll save my friends. I've done it.
Starting point is 00:08:51 I've got powers too. Yeah, and I was hoping kind of Ant-Man and the Wasp was that, but I think it's a bit less than a breezy... Yeah, it is a little bit. Anyway, you were going to say something about Shazam, I think. Yeah. I wasn't super looking forward to it, Mason. No, and that's not true. I was looking forward to it, Mason. No, that's not true.
Starting point is 00:09:05 I was looking forward to it, but hearing these stellar, glowing reviews. And hearing Eminem in the soundtrack. That's right. I can't wait till... I think that was quite an effective use of the song, actually. Yeah, they often don't use songs well in trailers, do they? No. Or sometimes they do, though.
Starting point is 00:09:20 Sometimes they do. Like this one. But yeah, I can't wait for the inevitable backlash. It's not as good as people say. And then you arrive somewhere in the middle. Somewhere in the middle. You know what I mean? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:28 And then people yell at you on the internet because you're somewhere in the middle. I can't wait for that. Yeah, nice. I often found if I say something is fine. Yes. I think this happened for Ghostbusters and maybe Solo or whatever. Yeah. I get like, you were too afraid to say you hated it.
Starting point is 00:09:49 Maybe I just didn't hate it though. Maybe I think it was fine maybe you're afraid maybe you're afraid of the nice lady at the media screening who who verifies your name you know maybe you're afraid of it and she'd be like hmm you said solo was fine well you're out you can't come to the next average movie who are you afraid of also you can just buy a ticket i think they're talking like backlash like oh but yeah anyway whatever i think i'm probably gonna get it this week actually to be honest uh here we go mason uh there's big suicide squad dc news oh there is will smith is out as deadshot he's doing something else what's he doing probably a rap do you reckon he's doing a rap he's not doing a rap probably not doing a rap there's no way he's doing a rap he should do a rap and regain his credibility definitely like eminem did like eminem's doing a rap? No, he's not doing a rap. He's probably not doing a rap, isn't he? There's no way he's doing a rap. He should do a rap. And regain his credibility.
Starting point is 00:10:25 Definitely. Like Eminem did. Like Eminem did. Through a rap. Remember because he dissed the president? Yeah. And everyone's like, he's back! Eminem's back!
Starting point is 00:10:33 The thing about that rap is, he didn't even get a rise out of the president. It's so easy to get a rise out of the president. That's true, yeah. You could say anything and he'll attack you for the rest of his life. That's true. But he didn't even flinch. Yeah. For that rap. Yeah. Wow. Maybe he didn't even flinch for that rap.
Starting point is 00:10:45 Yeah. Wow. Maybe it wasn't a very good rap, Mason. I couldn't say. Yeah. But anyway, I don't think Will Smith's doing a rap. Okay. At the president?
Starting point is 00:10:53 What if he does, though? Maybe that's his big comeback. Could be. Yeah. But he's out. Maybe he's doing Bright 2. He might be doing Bright 2. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:10:59 There's so much to tell in the Bright universe still. Yeah, there is. Do you reckon they'll ever get to it? No. Well, I'm looking forward to Bright Burn, the sequel sequel uh anyway idris alba is the hot contender this is according to variety and a few other sources uh for to follow up to step into that role yeah i think that's a great choice yeah yeah do you think same universe do you think it matters do you think i don't think for starters get that straight in your head first, mate.
Starting point is 00:11:26 I don't think. That's my problem. I don't think. Yes. Secondly, I don't think it matters. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, because the general idea of that character,
Starting point is 00:11:35 you can just be, he's got a daughter and he's sometimes in jail. That's true, yeah. And he's arced over. It's fine. He went back to jail. He's arced over. We went back to jail and everybody got a nice TV or something. That's right.
Starting point is 00:11:47 I was in Subway the other day. Why do you keep eating that sawdust, Mason? I don't know. But anyway, there was a TV on the wall and Idris Elba had gone to Ellen. He was on the Ellen show and he'd shaved his, you know, he's perpetually got a lot of stubble. Yeah. He'd shaved it off, I think, for Ellen because I think they were like, you know all the ladies of all the guests all the all the audience of the ellen show i bet they'd love you as a clean shaven he looked like a little baby boy a beautiful little baby boy
Starting point is 00:12:13 because you said he was too working class to be james bond that's true i did what do you think without the beard do you think no he looks like a baby boy he couldn't be james bond because he's gonna be looks like he's gonna do then you can't do't do either James Bond Jr that's good that's very good so Margot Robbie might be back okay I guess it's probably going to be a sequel
Starting point is 00:12:30 but the new line up they're making for this James Gunn movie is King Shark oh yeah which I decried because he was already on The Flash
Starting point is 00:12:37 but then but The Flash is in Suicide Squad as well and there's also The Flash and also I didn't think that because I don't think
Starting point is 00:12:44 that's my problem I don't think but you're saying that is that uh often it seems like the cw flaro verse shows are kind of a testing ground to see what will work there are like they did do suicide squad in arrow they did and then they made a serious them do it yeah then they made it stop yeah for the great movie the suicide squad correct yeah. Correct, yes. Yeah. So, King Shark, I think that's a good get. Poker.man. All right. What does he do again? I can't remember.
Starting point is 00:13:10 He's not the spot. He's a different character. No, that's who I... I'm going to look him up while we talk. Rat Catcher. I like Rat Catcher. Gender swapped, though. Oh, Lady Rat Catcher.
Starting point is 00:13:19 No, all the rats are gender swapped. Okay, cool. The male ones are female and so forth. Wow. So, the Rat King's a rat queen. That's right. Wow. And Peacemaker, who's a pacifist oh i like peace oh okay well maybe this is a different piece no no it's a pacifist who would do anything for in the name of peace like murder a bunch of people okay cool what do you which peacemaker are you so so if you if you've seen
Starting point is 00:13:39 if you've seen the movie watchman or in fact the comic book series Watchmen yes the comedian is based on a character called Peacemaker right so what happened is basically DC purchased a comic book company called Charlton Comics
Starting point is 00:13:53 yes and then Alan Moore was going to base his series Watchmen on the Charlton Comics characters and DC were like you can't do that
Starting point is 00:14:01 we'd like to use all these characters in the regular DC universe so he changed them all. So Peacemaker became the comedian. Blue Beetle was Night Owl. Blue Beetle was Night Owl, yeah. And so on.
Starting point is 00:14:10 And et cetera. Yes. But they've mostly not used those characters in the regular DC universe. No, they probably used them. Yeah. So Peacemaker's like a killer government agent. Cool. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:14:20 I don't know if they've rebooted him in the years since. Polka Dot Man is a Batman villain who can turn polka dots covering his costume into a variety of weapons. Or you can play Twister on him. Any of these things are possible. Be more specific, Batman Wiki. What's wrong with that? No, but like what weapons? What weapons?
Starting point is 00:14:36 Like knives? What does he mean like little polka dotty discs? Okay. Flying buzz saws. Flying saucers. Sun dot. Okay. Bubble dot. Fist Dots, Hole Dot.
Starting point is 00:14:47 Hole Dot? Hole Dot. That's my favourite character from Last Jedi, Hole Dot. And mine, Game of Thrones. Oh, very good. Thank you. Okay, good. All right, Bubble Dot, Fist Dot, Hole Dot.
Starting point is 00:14:59 I think this seems like they're going for a wackier, maybe even grosser team. Yeah, okay, this kind of works. I like this. i would like to see a live action version of this guy because he looks weird in the the the 1930s version i can see yeah because the versions they had in the last one they mostly just did karate they're just exactly they're just brawlers that's that was the problem with that except for the dude the el diablo guy when he turned into a giant demon at the end exactly yeah yeah okay okay looks like there has been a sort of a more modern version of the character so that's fun yeah but again he looks like a man in a see that exactly he looks like a he looks
Starting point is 00:15:41 like a lunatic in a in a in a twisted onesie. Yeah. So, yeah, give us a crazy one with crazy powers. Like he's throwing the dots off and they're turning into buzz saws and suns and flying saucers. I would like that a lot. And rats. But they've got a rat person already. Get out of it, polka dot man. Get out of it.
Starting point is 00:15:59 Do you reckon if you're wearing these polka dots and you sit down, you get like a buzz saw going off and cutting your leg off or whatever? No, I think they have very elaborate safety switches on all the polka dots. Well, they sound difficult to remove then. Well, he's an expert. Also, you've got to be safe, don't you? You do, it's true. O-H-N-S.
Starting point is 00:16:12 The Suicide Squad is all about O-H-N-S. Yes. Also, give us... Also, kill some of these people. Yes. Immediately. And if there's a lesson, I guess, that can be learned, and I'm sure if this is Jamesames gunn he's he's he's on it probably but like don't don't give us a very brief tease of a character and then kill them
Starting point is 00:16:32 yeah because we obviously know they're the one to go like give us have them do something and have them do something then kill them i mean they did kill el diablo i guess i guess i mean i guess yeah what i'm saying is bring him back and kill him again yeah I would definitely be up for bringing him back any more Suicide Squad thoughts Mason
Starting point is 00:16:50 no it's got the the working title of El Dorado I believe so is that about
Starting point is 00:16:57 the City of Gold is it about the TV show Legend of the City of Gold wait it's Suicide so it's Suicide Squad El Dorado no no the working title
Starting point is 00:17:04 like the production title it's called. But is that like a fake out? Yeah, like Return to Jabba is called like Blue Harvest. Oh, I see. Okay, well, maybe. But often it can allude to something in the story, but often it can be unrelated. Okay.
Starting point is 00:17:15 But often it can be either of those things. Well, maybe they are bringing back El Diablo. Maybe they're going... But it said Dorado, Mason. Yeah, I know, but maybe they're going back to like his origin or something. Was he from a city of gold? I don't know. Look, all I heard was L and the letter D,
Starting point is 00:17:29 so I'm assuming they're linked somehow. Yes, we're all assuming things on this podcast. But also, I would also like to see them go to somewhere that isn't the city, you know? Yeah, like... Like El Dorado? You don't want them to go to a grey city again? No.
Starting point is 00:17:44 Even a colourful city would be nice. Or a city with some people in it would be nice too. Okay. Or a grey city that's mostly empty. A grey empty city filled with weird eyeball mud men. Yes. That's what I want. Sorry, I was a little unclear.
Starting point is 00:17:56 Yeah, I just wanted to refine that. There are no bad ideas, but my bad idea was for them to go to a different place than where they were in the first movie. That was a bad idea, so they should just go back. In fact, they should just go back to the city and be like, yeah, that city's still ruined. Let's go back to it. There's a lot of boogly-eyed men here still. More stuff in there.
Starting point is 00:18:13 I think there's some gold in... Let's get the gold. Actually, the gold is Amanda Waller. Yeah. Surprise. It's a metaphor. Yeah. I wonder if they're going to bring back that version of Amanda Waller
Starting point is 00:18:22 because I thought she was fine from memory. Yeah, unlike the old Davis, yeah. Okay. Mason? Yes? I wonder if they're going to bring back that version of Amanda Waller. Because I thought she was fine from memory. Okay. Mason? Yes? The Arrow TV show Arrow is coming to an end after eight seasons of Arrow. Does this mean they're wrapping up the CW-iverse?
Starting point is 00:18:36 Probably not. Probably not. Does this mean we will see Arrow again? Yes, I'd imagine, in other things. Yes. And spin-offs and once-off movies and all of those things. I believe they might be doing... Because they've done a couple of Crisis crossovers. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:18:50 I think I read somewhere they're doing Crisis on Infinite Earths. Okay. So maybe... Because they did Crisis on Earth X, which is where they went to the Nazi universe. Yeah. So maybe they're doing... I think somebody said maybe the suggestion
Starting point is 00:19:03 is they're going to wrap up everything during Crisis on Infinite Earths. But maybe not not i don't know i mean there's so i mean they got legends tomorrow going they got supergirl they got the flash they've got probably other things there's black black lightning's not in that universe is he no it's a different universe but they can also bring them they can bring it in supergirl is not technically the same universe either but then they were like let's just say it is whatever let's just say they're like they're they're they're on different sides of impermeable dimensional barrier or whatever and they're like just say she can cross over she's got a she's got a belt yeah she just walked through or whatever
Starting point is 00:19:31 yeah it's 2012 it started i remember yeah and yeah look i didn't look at to be honest i haven't stuck the whole way but a lot of this stuff has influenced i think other movies and tv shows i think even things like daredevil and the netflix stuff and for sure and even i all of this stuff has also i think led over into decent movies and yeah so forth i've been in and out but i really enjoyed the first couple of seasons me too yeah i think i think he's really good as well yeah i think what got to me in the end was the constant flashbacks to the island yes i think that that to me that became a bit formulaic but i think they've they've tweaked that since then and I've gone back
Starting point is 00:20:07 and watched you know what episodes here and there and it's a good series. It wasn't so much also when I left that I didn't like it it was just
Starting point is 00:20:12 because they all interconnected and there was so much and I just went I'm not. Yeah fair enough. Because I don't want to watch everything and so I'll just watch nothing.
Starting point is 00:20:20 Yeah fair enough. There you bloody go. But if we're talking TV news Mason which you know we are Game of Thrones got another trailer yes I went to watch it again before we started
Starting point is 00:20:29 but then went I get it like I don't really need to yep I'm gonna watch it I'm 100% in sure The Night King
Starting point is 00:20:36 The Armies Amassing Dragons Arya Stark's running from somebody what is it? maybe a bear it's probably a bear or a ghost a big old rat yeah
Starting point is 00:20:43 it could be a rat or a supergirl she's gotten to her dimension that's right she can go anywhere it's fine let's knock that wall down between game of thrones and the flaro oh that that yeah she'd defeat them all right fairly yeah with stabbing i'd imagine probably masks of people's faces and stabbing oh no i meant super girl oh i thought you meant aria stark look Stark. Look, let's say they do a crossover. Could Supergirl beat up a dragon? Probably.
Starting point is 00:21:08 I mean, a dragon's magic also. You've got to think about that. Yeah, I actually don't know if Supergirl in this universe is vulnerable to magic. I'd imagine so. But is a dragon magic magic or is it just a monster? I think it's magic. Because they were frozen in like an egg for thousands of years. And also there's the one that breathes blue fire, who came back from the dead.
Starting point is 00:21:25 That's true, yeah. That one's probably magic. Doesn't she fight a dragon at the end of the Supergirl movie? Like the witch morphs into a dragon or something? I don't know. What's to say? Let's do a shot by shot remake of that. If we're going to do a Supergirl movie, just a remake of that.
Starting point is 00:21:37 Okay. Can we set it instead in like, say, a dark, gloomy, grey city with boogly-eyed men? Yes. Thank you. Good. I think Supergirl also would probably be vulnerable to those spear things. Yes. The Night King spear things.
Starting point is 00:21:51 Yeah, you're probably right. Yeah, because they're magical. They're also magic, yeah. That's a good point. And then she'd become Frosty Supergirl. I agree with that. Yeah, Game of Thrones looks great, and you may or may not have watched this trailer.
Starting point is 00:22:00 No, I did. He did, everybody, and he thought it was... All right. He liked it, everybody. He thought it was really good. Cersei had some looks. She did, everybody, and he thought it was... All right. He liked it, everybody. He thought it was really good. Cersei had some looks. She did some looks, didn't she? She did give it a bit of a look, mate.
Starting point is 00:22:10 She was like, hmm. She gave a bit of a look that was like, hmm. But then she was like, ooh. Yes. But what? What? She was like, I'm smug, but also, ooh, I haven't thought of that. That's a new thought I've had.
Starting point is 00:22:21 Ooh. Did you see that? Did you see the look? I may have seen that. I can't remember. Yeah, it was good. That was some good acting, I think. Yeah, she's a good actor. Yeah. She's I've had. Ooh. Did you see that? Did you see the look? I may have seen that. I can't remember. Yeah, it was good. That was some good acting, I think. She's a good actor.
Starting point is 00:22:27 Yeah. She's good in things. Yeah. Jamie Lannister's still alive. Who would have thought that would... Jamie Lannister? Yeah. Well, he was at the end of the last season.
Starting point is 00:22:34 No, but I mean, who would have thought he's still alive? Oh, just in general. Just in general, yeah. Yeah, that's a fair point. Yeah. Who would have thought he'd make it to season eight? Who do you think's going to sit on the Iron Throne at the end? If anybody?
Starting point is 00:22:50 The dragon? Yeah, yeah maybe this is mine i would be not unsatisfied if it was just the night king and he just sits there and he's just like well i'm done yeah i did it this is a good chair and i have it yeah i've got this chair that's all i wanted was this chair you know that chair's supposed to be i call it the game of chair because i think it's a chair that would upset people that would upset people if he finally if he spoke and he was like good chair this is a chair this is a chair i'm in these are the thoughts we have yes so this this chair though it's it's much bigger in the comics it's like 20 feet high sorry the comics it is also the comics but the books it's like 20 feet high sorry the comics it is also the comics I think it's comics but the books it's like 20 feet high but then for the movie for the TV show
Starting point is 00:23:27 they're like we can't really make this on this low budget yeah right not low budget but reasonably low budget for the first season so yeah
Starting point is 00:23:34 but now they've got that you know they're doing it's like millions in episode but you can't upgrade the throne and also you can sell that throne as merch that's true yeah you can't make the other one really
Starting point is 00:23:44 no that's true yeah it should be like the other one really and no that's true yeah yes you do like a miniaturized version so yeah what's the throne made of in the context of the show swords no but i mean whose swords are they just like various kings and rulers that were conquered or okay yeah that makes that makes a lot of sense it must apparently it's very uncomfortable to sit on because it's made of swords made of swords exactly that would make sense though okay so who who actually who do you think is going to end up on that throne i don't think it's going to be like an obvious choice like a john snow or daenerys somebody posited the theory a while back that the the the winners are going to be the three it's
Starting point is 00:24:13 going to be daenerys and john snow and it seems really yeah but it seems really obvious the actor peter dinklage really he steps the supergirl bring him into the universe yeah exactly that's right that's great only you can save this peter Dinklage. Can I have this chair? All right. He says it too. Oh, yeah. Yeah, look, I wouldn't be dissatisfied, but I feel it's a bit obvious. Yeah, right.
Starting point is 00:24:35 And this show, it's not, it generally doesn't give you what you want. Yes, absolutely. Or what you expect. I've been saying that for years. Yes, you hate it. So, yeah, I don't know. I mean, I think it's going to be left of center, but I was watching an interview with John Snow.
Starting point is 00:24:50 Maybe Sam will get on it. Well, yeah. And then burn to death. Yes. Somehow. As his parents did. Or he'll sit on the throne and... Look up his butt.
Starting point is 00:24:57 Look up his butt. That's right. Great. He's going to Ross it. He's going to Ross it. He'd be a good choice, though, for the... Ross from Friends from friends no he'd be a terrible choice agreed yeah uh but sam would be like it yeah but i don't know i don't know yeah let's say sam hmm and do you think it's gonna be do you think that game of thrones the final episodes are gonna leave the door open for
Starting point is 00:25:22 sequels or do you think well there is a prequel coming up. But no, so like... Like, do you think they're going to leave it in a position where they're like, well, here's the further adventures, or do you think it's going to be like, everybody's dead and this is an unsatisfying conclusion? Well, I think because even if you go back 20 years before the first season in the timeline,
Starting point is 00:25:42 everything kind of wraps up. Like there's a new king they defeat the enemy and whatever so there can be a new threat a new story in x number of years yeah so even if i think you end it definitively yeah like say star wars did you can still there's still yeah like from it i don't want a hanging thread of like but this is the next thing would you be okay look i i also feel like it could like it could end with everyone's dead. I would love that. And it's now just a vast wasteland.
Starting point is 00:26:09 Yeah. Like all the major characters died and all the society crumbled. And it pulls back and it's a boy looking into a snow globe. Exactly. And then he puts it in his locker and it's men in black won. And then Will Smith finally comes back and does that rap. That's what he's been doing. That's why he hasn't been rapping.
Starting point is 00:26:32 He's been working on his magnum opus, which is he's going to do a family-friendly rap that summarizes the entire eight seasons of Game of Thrones. In character as whatever his character's name from Men in Black was. With the suit that he wore at the end of 2. Yes. No, not the end of two. Yes. No, not the end of two, end of one. It was one, it was the end of one. I wasn't going to say anything.
Starting point is 00:26:48 I meant to say this earlier, though, about the DC movies. I'm really happy they're kind of getting it together. I didn't love Aquaman, but it did well, and people generally like it. Yeah, for sure. If Shazam's great, great. This kind of creativity and success drives other companies and makes them improve.
Starting point is 00:27:05 For sure. So I'm really glad. I'll be really rapt if this is... I don't want it to fail. I want this to do well. No, exactly. And this is what I... I think Aquaman is, again, which I enjoyed, but it's not the greatest movie in the world,
Starting point is 00:27:18 but it's a fun movie. It's what I wanted when they went, okay, we're going to do a DC Cinematic Universe and it's going to be closer to the comic books. Yeah. That's what I wanted when they went, okay, we're going to do a DC cinematic universe and it's going to be closer to the comic books. Yeah. That's what I wanted. I wanted a Batman who's really capable and he can stand up with the rest of the Justice League because he's got the skills. And I want colorful villains and colorful costumes and crazy stuff happening. That's what I wanted. And I feel like it went off the rails instantly.
Starting point is 00:27:40 Yes. instantly yes but with aquaman it's like yes let's have a trench to an under and you know the the hollow earth and let's have a an atlantis and let's have giant seahorses and whatever let's just throw it in and see what happens i agree you know uh you do know i do know and i agree with you thank you uh bond 25 but also some gray cities please yes please some gray just some great callbacks oh love it gray cities. Grey cities, grey monsters. That could be their new slogan. What if they're like, we're rebranding for 2019. Grey cities, grey monsters.
Starting point is 00:28:13 DC Universe. Or whatever it's called now. Bond 25, according to Barbara Broccoli from the Broccoli Estate, who runs all things Bond. Apparently it's not called Shatterhand. It's not? Okay. All right. It's fine? Okay. All right.
Starting point is 00:28:25 It's fine. Ah, my hand. Ooh. The bones, none of them are good. Everyone. There's so many bones in the human hand and I've somehow broken all of them. Yeah, so that's fine.
Starting point is 00:28:40 They'll make that movie. I don't know. Anything else on that? No. Nah. I'm trying to think. No, I don't know anything else on that no nah I'm trying to think uh no I don't know Bond movies
Starting point is 00:28:48 yeah Bond movies I like Bond movies generally overall I like them more than I don't like them yeah I agree yeah I've been wanting to go back
Starting point is 00:28:55 and play Goldeneye but just rap just a single player but just rapping because you don't have any friends I don't have any friends no friends James it's it
Starting point is 00:29:03 people talk only really talk about the multiplayer on that game, but that game had a bloody banging single player as well. Again, I disagree with all that, but that's fine. It's the controller, though. That's what's holding me back. What I hated about that game is the controller,
Starting point is 00:29:14 but also that whenever people played multiplayer, it was at their house on their 20-inch television. And so it's four-way split screen. And they know where all the mines are. Exactly. And I'm squinting at this postage stamp-sized box, and I'm like, I don't know what any of it is. Oh, I'm dead.
Starting point is 00:29:27 Well, you shouldn't have picked Oddjob, Mason. That's true. Yeah. Do I have any more Bond thoughts? I don't know. I don't know. Probably. Originally, Thunderball was going to be called Latitude 78 West.
Starting point is 00:29:40 So I think maybe they should call it, this one they should call it Latitude 78 West. Yeah, people will definitely go and see Latitude 78 West. Not even Bond in the title. No, exactly. It's just, yeah, exactly. Latitude 78 West. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:29:52 I've been recently rereading the history of, because you know how there's been a couple of unofficial Bond movies? Yeah, like Casino Royales and Austin Powers. There was Casino Royales and then, yeah, Austin Powers, exactly. Never Say Never Again. Never Say Never Again. Never Say Never Again, which is essentially a remake of Thunderball. Spy Hard, exactly. Weird Al is in it and his head explodes.
Starting point is 00:30:12 I just think it's kind of fascinating. Triple X. I can't think of another funny one. You don't need to, Mason. Don't worry. Just don't worry about it. Don't worry about it. Just sit that one out.
Starting point is 00:30:24 I was going to think maybe I'll sit it out. True lies. Yeah. Okay. That's a good one. That's a good one. That's a good one film, yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:30:31 But basically, Ian Fleming got together with some screenwriters to write a new original Bond concept. And then the guy he was writing it with, he basically contacted this writer because this writer was kind of going places. And he had this film that had come out that was kind of, it was in contention to win this big prestigious award. What was it? You remember? I can't remember. It's probably crap.
Starting point is 00:30:56 By today's standards. By today's standards, but exactly. So this guy, Kevin McClory, and then this movie. And then, so they got together and started working on working on this original screenplay, this new Bond film. It was going to be the first Bond film. Yeah. And then this guy's film was released commercially and it bombed. And then all of a sudden Ian Fleming wasn't really interested in doing the collaboration anymore.
Starting point is 00:31:19 Ah, right. But then a couple of years later, the new Bond novel Thunderball came out. And it was exactly the same as their script. Really? So that's why there's the someone owns Thunderball inspector? Yeah. So basically what happened is this guy, Kevin McClory, got an advanced copy of Thunderball and he was like, this contains a lot of the stuff, like the ideas that I pitched. And so he went to court over it.
Starting point is 00:31:50 And of course, because it was all written down, because they were like, here's all my ideas for this movie. It's Spectre and Blofeld and stealing the two nuclear weapons and all this sort of stuff. So Thunderball, the book has on the cover, on the inside cover, I think it says,
Starting point is 00:32:02 based on a script by kevin mcclory and this other guy and right and the author so kevin mcclory got the rights but only the story elements in thunderball so he can't so he he he could make another movie but he could only he could only contain the plot elements of like it's got two nuclear weapons being stolen inspectors in it and blowfeld's in it like so which is why never say never again he's exactly the same as thunderball people like that one though i think it's better it's like a yeah well it's pretty slow the first one yeah and it's also and also i read uh sean connery's in it because initially he was a producer on never say ever again because he i guess because he hates the broccoli family
Starting point is 00:32:43 he hates the broccoli family because even though the movies made him a star, he always felt that he was hard done by. Yeah, and they didn't give him good money. Exactly. So he was a producer on this. And then he was just like, Kevin McClure was just like, how about you be Bond in this? And he's like, all right, I want millions of dollars.
Starting point is 00:32:59 Yeah. Because didn't he once say, I'll never again? Yeah, exactly. And they're like, well, why don't we call it that thing that you said? And he was like, never! And they're like, what about money? And then he hit 10 women. That's right.
Starting point is 00:33:11 I shouldn't laugh about that. But he did. Yeah, he did. He's bad. Brightburn Mason has a trailer. Ooh! It's Man of Steel, but if he was an even worse bloke than he is in Man of Steel. Correct, yes.
Starting point is 00:33:23 Yeah. an even worse bloke than he is in Man of Steel. Correct, yes. Yeah. Again, I'm sort of astounded that they can make this without legal ramifications from DC. Yeah, but people make Superman-esque. That's true, yeah. I mean, if it came out in the 50s,
Starting point is 00:33:35 it would probably be different. They'd contest it or whatever. Also interesting because Shazam is out and that version of Captain Marvel is based on Superman and that's, again again a property that they that was made as a you know it was essentially a rip off of Superman
Starting point is 00:33:50 and then they they said this is ours yeah they said this is ours yeah they took it yeah Brightburn still looks great though it does look
Starting point is 00:33:56 it does look a bit Slyther-esque it does look Slyther-esque well Elizabeth Banks for one and James Gunn wrote it or whatever but no this looks really good
Starting point is 00:34:05 I think it's going to be a movie and you reminded me that a woman pulls glass out of her eye which I missed when I first saw it unpleasant I was looking at my phone one of the most unpleasant things I've seen nah man nah man
Starting point is 00:34:15 nah man that was bad nah man do you think that's the problem Mason I don't think oh no there's two of us now you were supposed to be the one that thinks
Starting point is 00:34:24 that's how this podcast keeps grinding away is you think and I don't think. Oh no, there's two of us now. You were supposed to be one that thinks. That's how this podcast keeps grinding away is you think and I don't. Do you think that he is going to be redeemed somehow? No, I think they'll kill him. Okay. I think his mother will kill him. How though? Well, because she's the only one in the trailer
Starting point is 00:34:40 who's like, he's still good. He's all right. And everyone else is like, this kid fucking sucks. Yeah. And then I think she'll be the one to be like you know what he does suck i love him but i'm gonna do you think he has a kryptonite style vulnerability yes i think he does you think it's in the ship probably yeah yeah good call or it's just kryptonite yeah oddly what if it is hey what about this kryptonite like superman you know superman's vulnerable to kryptonite well they've found some kryptonite does superman exist in this world sure yeah yeah oddly this is yeah it again it does feel like the most self-contained of these superhero homages or this you know this these new universes but this is the one that i want i would like to see and not even having seen it yet this is the one that I would like to see
Starting point is 00:35:25 not even having seen it yet this is the one I'd most likely to see another movie and like you want to know where this kid is from where he's from is he a weapon is he alone is there another like are we going to get
Starting point is 00:35:36 are we going to get more of these powered beings or different powered beings like I think we've mentioned before there's a comic book called Supreme Power which is similar in the sense that it's again it's a superman origin where it's a kid it's a baby who crash land an alien baby who crash lands on earth and rather than being picked up by a kindly couple he's being picked up by the government yeah wolf it actually happens in an irredeemable little bit you've spent some time with wolves okay cool
Starting point is 00:36:03 and then it's like well how, what does this guy turn into? And that universe doesn't exist anymore, but I'm like... Because that kid obliterated it? Probably. But I'm like, I want to see more of this and different takes. And I would love to see... That's the thing. Like, just with this trailer, I'm like, can we see a Batman character in this?
Starting point is 00:36:23 Yeah, I can. Yeah. Can we see a Justice League? Can we see his parents? I don't know. Yeah. Give us a flash. Yeah, I don't see that.
Starting point is 00:36:33 Because in that, again, in the Supreme Power Universe, his spaceship, when it crashes in Earth, it seeds genetic material around the world that creates other superpowered beings. Right, right. Which seems to be like they want him to fight them. But why? To get his skills up. To get his skills up or is it training or whatever.
Starting point is 00:36:52 Then it ends. Then it ends so you never really find out. So, yeah. Give us more of the Bright Burniverse. Unless it's bad. Unless it's bad, in which case I don't want to say no more. Get rid of it. In the bin.
Starting point is 00:37:03 Yeah. It's out. We've got one more bit of news and it's good to be touching on this because it's set the internet which case I don't want to say no more. Get rid of it. In the bin. Yeah. It's out. We've got one more bit of news, and it's good to be touching on this, because it's set the internet aflame. Oh, I'm excited. There's more images released of Sonic the Hedgehog. Right, there we go. Not just his muscular legs, but his weird separate eyes.
Starting point is 00:37:15 And his little hands. His delicate little hands. I don't understand. What are you redesigning Sonic for? Yeah. Just make it look like the Sonic from the Sega Genesis slash Mega Drive game, Sonic the Hedgehog. That's it. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:37:29 That's all there is to it. Just make sure the mouth and eyes don't look hellish. Yeah. And use the original design. Who cares? But, I don't know. What's his name? Ben Schwartz is voicing Sonic, which I like.
Starting point is 00:37:41 Yeah. I don't think this is necessarily going to be a train wreck, but it kind of seems like it's going to be a bit of a train wreck. But I probably would have said that about like Detective Pikachu, but that looks fine. Because, yeah. What, before the trailer came out? Yeah. Nah, I don't think people were down on that before.
Starting point is 00:37:54 Right. Okay. Uh-huh. Yeah. Who's leaking these images as well? I think it's just because they're not good that people are leaking them. Like, people should see this. Yeah, right.
Starting point is 00:38:01 They're not good. Uh-huh. But, yeah. I don't know, man. It's not something that I care about. Yeah. But they're making it yeah for sure it doesn't look i believe it's some sort of there's some sort of all-around branding marketing company which is uh they put together some some stock images of sonic yeah of like movie sonic and video game sonic and cartoon sonic as some sort of
Starting point is 00:38:26 test a bunch of test images or something like that so this might not be no that's apparently that's real that's the real version it's just they
Starting point is 00:38:34 they're like they I guess they were commissioned by Sega or whoever to be like people say Sega Mason yeah I know they say Sega I don't say Sega
Starting point is 00:38:41 no I don't say Sega we say Sega we're a Sega family here we're a Sega family here down at weeklyplanet.youtube.org that's right that's right you should buy that yeah we have to now do you think you can get youtube.org yeah okay great okay good terrific i'll check yeah but i that that's all i got i think it's probably just some branding company and employees there's like well i not entirely, or like an intern or something is like, I don't care for this job.
Starting point is 00:39:08 I don't care. I can get another marketing job. I'm just going to release this. Yeah, get any marketing job any day of the week. Mm-hmm. Dot org. Here we go. Okay.
Starting point is 00:39:15 Maybe just redirects to YouTube. So I cannot be reached. Did you mean YouTube.com? No. No, I didn't. No. That's your problem, the internet. You didn't think.
Starting point is 00:39:23 You don't think. Yeah. It's time for an ad. And You didn't think. You don't think. Yeah. It's time for an ad. And there's nothing better than an ad about a mattress, except on a different week where we have a different ad. That's what I feel. But this week, I feel. We don't have a different ad.
Starting point is 00:39:34 There's nothing better than an ad about a mattress. I agree. Good. Especially when it's the mattress with the mosterist. Come on, mate. Come on. Nah, I'm taking it. You said it offhandedly beforehand and I'm like,
Starting point is 00:39:47 with a little tweak to the delivery, I can turn this into a winning joke and then claim it was mine. Yes. Casper products are cleverly designed to mimic human curves. They provide a body of comfort for all kinds of bodies because you spend one third of your life sleeping. If you're bloody lucky.

And then other people say, well, maybe actually talking about the weather is good because it's a common thing that we all have together and we can branch off into other topics.
Starting point is 00:40:47 So maybe don't be so judgmental about the weather. Maybe people are like, don't talk about the weather. The weather is so dumb to talk about. Maybe they're dumb. Oh, yeah. You know? But also Casper mattresses. And shut up.
Starting point is 00:40:57 And shut up also. Do you find it breathable in the heat? Yes. And also breathable but in a better way. On the beat. Really? Yeah, because I take it with me in the heat? Yes. And also breathable but in a better way. On the beat. Really? Yeah, because I take it with me on the streets to fight crime. Out of the arm and off you go?
Starting point is 00:41:10 Yep, that's right. Fantastic. So, yeah, it helps you sleep cool and regulates your body temperature throughout the night. And they have over 20,000 reviews and an average of 4.8 stars across Casper, Amazon and Google. Casper is becoming the internet's favorite mattress. Why wouldn't it be the mattress with the mosterest? Agreed. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:41:27 I knew you'd come around to the thing that I said. How quickly did you come around to the Casper unboxing experience? Immediately. Cool. Brings joy to your life. I'm doing a lot of mattress moving at the moment, Mason. Because you're fighting crime? I'm fighting crime, yes.
Starting point is 00:41:42 My son's upgrading his bed. Oh, really? So at the moment he's sleeping on a mattress on the floor. Are you losing your house? What's going on? It's not important, Mason. Don't worry about it, all right? Okay, all right.
Starting point is 00:41:52 Anyway, my point is lugging a mattress... Is he warming his hands by a tiny little burning oil drum? Well, my point is mattresses are hard to move, but when they come in a box... Especially when your son's got little fingerless gloves on. They're like wrecked little woolen gloves. He needs them free for catching rats, Madison. Okay, good.
Starting point is 00:42:13 Or tying his little bindle or whatever. Yep. But yeah, so they make the unboxing really easy, so you're not lugging a mattress around. I mean, you are, but it's in a box. Yeah, that's true. And you can also be sure of your purchase with Casper's 100 night risk-free sleep on it trial you can also get 50 towards select mattresses by visiting casper.com slash the weekly planet and using the weekly planet or one word at checkout terms and conditions apply 50 towards select mattresses by going to casper.com slash
Starting point is 00:42:42 the weekly planet and using theweeklyplanet at checkout. Terms and conditions apply. Just type it in with your free fingers because you've got the little... And you've warmed them up. You've warmed them up, exactly. That's right. From catching rats.
Starting point is 00:42:53 Yes. Good. A final thing. Your son is wearing a little top hat and the top is cut open like it's a can of soap. Good.
Starting point is 00:43:01 That was a good... The final thing. The final indignity. All right. I'll admit the rest of the show. Mason, Captain Marvel is in cinemas. I know. We've been talking Shazam. Good, that was a good The final thing The final indignity Alright I'll admit the rest of the show Mason, Captain Marvel is in cinemas I know We've been talking Shazam
Starting point is 00:43:09 I've seen it This isn't that This is the movie Captain Marvel And I want to get into Box Office Okay Because Box Office to me is fascinating Apparently it's Friday Box Office was something like
Starting point is 00:43:19 62 million dollars Uh huh That's really good Considering what came before it Infinity War was 106 Black Panther was $76 Guardians of the Galaxy $56 Spider-Man Far From Home $50
Starting point is 00:43:28 Doctor Strange $32 so yeah good numbers not as good as Black Panther or Infinity War but still very high and it could go as high as $160 million just for the US on the weekend that's pretty good will it have legs in the long term
Starting point is 00:43:41 that obviously remains to be seen but people seem to be enjoying it on the whole I would say there's there's obviously some backlash and people are like it's fine there was also that element of it as well but it seems to be some people were saying it was gonna bomb it's probably not it's not gonna bomb it's not gonna bomb yeah it's uh it looks like it's on track to not bomb shockingly yeah so it So... It would be weird if it somehow broke the streak of Marvel movies not bombing. Yeah, I never... It's not going to be this one that...
Starting point is 00:44:09 No. I think you need a few kind of mediocre ones and then a very unpopular character. What could it be, though? That what? That bombs it. I don't know. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:44:18 I can't think of a Marvel character, even one that's weird and left field, where people will be like, not for me. Yeah, you've got to go dull. You can't go weird. gotta go dull to really or maybe they do like ant-man 3 or whatever and people like yeah i didn't really like yeah maybe it'll be i think i guess it could be uninspired sequels yeah yeah there you go but i also think like people have grown to like i again ant-man and doctor strange were a couple of origin movies that i
Starting point is 00:44:45 didn't particularly love when they came out but i think those characters have grown on me and i think if they're like ant-man 3 i'm like of course paul rudd yeah see i i disagree well i like doctor strange more than ant-man yep i quite like doctor strange yeah those characters that i like more in ensemble films i think yeah right that being said i want to see more weird doctor strangey stuff but i really like doctor Strange in Infinity War. Same, yeah. As opposed to Doctor Strange the movie, which I also thought was fine. That's all beside the point compared to what you think the story was.
Starting point is 00:45:14 Oh, no. There we go, Mason. I got you. Oh, you got me again. Every time you get me. If I look tired, Mason, it's because I am. Did you go to a wedding yesterday? I didn't, but I'm just tired, man.
Starting point is 00:45:25 I've just been busy, all right? I'm going to get into it. All right. Just being busy. You know what I mean? You know who else has been busy? Who? The bloody Kree.
Starting point is 00:45:32 The Kree alien. Oh, okay. Do tell. They're bloody out there. And they're bloody... I'm still high energy, though, Mason, if that's what you're thinking. Okay, good. You've derailed me.
Starting point is 00:45:41 All right, so it's the 90s. Yes. It's the bloody, the 90s. Yes. It's the bloody 90s. Grunge is big. Yep. And so is the war between the Kree and the Skrulls. It's a big one. Big old war.
Starting point is 00:45:54 Some say bigger than grunge. No. Yes. No. Nirvana. Yeah, it's a big band. They were dead by then, though. Pearl Jam.
Starting point is 00:46:04 Yep. Are they grunge? I mean, they are. Yeah. But are they? I mean, were dead by then, though. Pearl Jam. Yep. Are they grunge? I mean, they are. Yeah. But are they? I mean, they are. Grunge purists would probably say no. They'd probably say Pearl Jam.
Starting point is 00:46:11 They'd be like, they're pixies. Yeah, exactly. They'd be like Pearl Jam. Evanescence. A bit commercial. Exactly. That's right. Anyway, it's the 90s and Captain Marvel.
Starting point is 00:46:23 Wait, no. It's the 90s and... Yeah. It's the 90s Yeah It's the 90s Mason You've said that Yeah well that's That's what this movie is It's a love letter to the 90s It certainly is yeah
Starting point is 00:46:31 It's Anyway This is the Kree-Skrull War And Agent V is Of the Kree She's a Kree noble warrior hero And she's gotta
Starting point is 00:46:40 She's gotta Go to Earth And And she's gotta Track down some stuff for the Cree. For the Cree. For the Kree Star War. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:46:48 It's the 90s. It's the 90s. Anyway. You can tell it's the 90s from the music. Boy, can you. The unrelenting musical cues. But music in the 90s was unrelenting. Boy, was it.
Starting point is 00:46:57 Yeah. Is it not now? It's somewhat relenting. I feel like I can switch off to other things. Yeah, for sure. I've got other distractions I don't know music all the music I know
Starting point is 00:47:08 is just in my gym so I know that song that goes like something something gasoline I want a gasoline I hear that every day and that song
Starting point is 00:47:18 is fucking awful yeah anyway the 90s it's a nightmare world is that crunch yeah it's crunch okay good it's a nightmare world where we have very little internet.
Starting point is 00:47:27 I wouldn't want to live there. Blockbusters. Blockbusters. The last one just closed in Australia. Yes. Wow. I escaped my fines, Mason. I'm free.
Starting point is 00:47:34 Oh, I see what you're saying. I see what you're saying there. Did you have a friend who worked at that one? Or one of them? One of the last ones? I don't think so. Or you knew somebody who knew somebody? I know some people.
Starting point is 00:47:43 I'm sure you talked about it on this show, yeah. I don't think so. Never mind. Sorry, yeah, the 90s, you were saying. Anyway, she's knew somebody? I know some people. I don't think so. Never mind. Sorry, yeah, the 90s you were saying. Anyway, she's got to be Captain Marvel. It's an origin movie.
Starting point is 00:47:49 Yep. That's it. That's the plot. That's the movie. Yeah. What did you think of it compared to other Marvel movies
Starting point is 00:47:55 or Marvel origin movies? What is it for for you? For me, I found this a lot more interesting than a couple of Marvel origin movies. Because of twists and turns? Because of twists and turns.
Starting point is 00:48:02 Because we're three phases in or whatever, so you want to mix it up. I think i think again because it's a marvel movie you need a certain amount of you have to you need to get a character you need to have them learn a lesson and and gain some powers and and figure out what life's all about what is it about and i think this one what i enjoyed about this one is it sort of it sort of dropped us into the middle of a large... It didn't feel like a stock standard origin and it sort of dropped us... It was okay with...
Starting point is 00:48:32 Man, it's difficult to say words, isn't it? Well, I think because it chops up the narrative. So when you meet her, she's already got her powers. Some things have happened to her that we're kind of not aware of that kind of unfold. Yeah. So I guess kind of like the way the deadpool movie plays out it's not a traditional narrative you know what i think it was this is a better origin movie because it acknowledges that the universe already exists right and it doesn't sort of take us back to first principles of like here's a man and he's very arrogant and he's a doctor. And then he's in an accident and then he goes to a place in Tibet and he's like, what's happening?
Starting point is 00:49:12 You know, it's like she's okay with there being spaceships and aliens because she is an alien living in the spaceship world. I'm with you. I thought it was fun and brisk. I didn't think it was great. But for the most part, I enjoyed it was fun and brisk. I didn't think it was great. But for the most part, I enjoyed it. I thought she was good. And I think people worried, like, because she's a bit stoic and she doesn't bloody smile enough or whatever.
Starting point is 00:49:33 There's quips aplenty in this movie. There's quips aplenty in this, mate. She is no less quippy than probably maybe Robert Downey Jr. in Iron Man 1, I would say. And I think for the most part, it lands. I think also a lot of characters in this also get their own little funny moments to shine there's a there's a she's part of like a like a kree strike team yeah and there's a scene quite early on where they all have a bit of banter and i thought it was quite i would have liked a bit more of that me too yeah because that was
Starting point is 00:49:56 kind of the only well maybe there's some other moments but that's the only real sense of that team you kind of get is jamon honsu's character in this the same character yes in guardians of the galaxy one okay it is okay cool these are crazy okay i'm glad he's in more things me too yeah i mean we know what happens to him yeah he dies oh gets his head torn off or whatever yeah yeah yeah so but that being said i think like all marvel movies there were some jokes that didn't land for me there was a moment where she answers the door and she's like suspicious of that person. Do you remember that bit? And the cinema I was in,
Starting point is 00:50:27 there was like, it's supposed to be this funny moment, but there's like, no, there was, there was nothing in the cinema. But that being said, a lot of,
Starting point is 00:50:35 I think most of the other stuff lands. And I think a lot of the stuff between her and Nick Fury, they really bounce off each other really well. Yeah. I think this was probably, in terms of superhero buddy cop, I think this was probably better than Iron Man 3 not that Iron Man 3 big call Mason
Starting point is 00:50:49 what a bloody, oh you really put yourself out there aren't you Mason it's obviously way better than Iron Man 3 but what I'm saying is that I think the elements that I liked in Iron Man 3 were kind of like the back and forth buddy elements and I think this does it even better than that and it's especially amazing considering one of them is a de-aged man for the entirety that's right of the film
Starting point is 00:51:10 do you want to talk about that though yes the nick fury uh wait did i have a thought oh you know i did have a thought uh that the i felt the opening of this was a little bit confusing did you also feel like in what sense like what do you mean i feel like some of the action in maybe the first half hour is a little bit chaotic and kind of hard to keep track of where people were. I didn't think there was a standout action scene in this. In the entire movie? Like one that I went, wow. Yeah, right. And I think most Marvel movies, there are exceptions. I think Ant-Man and the Wasp doesn't really have one. There's a few others, but I, you know, it's fine for the most part, but I don't think, I think there's a few others but i you know it's fine for the most part but i don't think i think there's a bit where she break actually the bit where she breaks out i quite liked that is good yeah but at the end and you've probably seen in the trailers she's just flying
Starting point is 00:51:52 and knocking spaceships out of the air and i'm just like okay that's yeah yeah but i i think this movie lacks a distinct visual style especially in relation to the space stuff because if you look at guardians and you look at ragnarok and even infinity war when you go to another planet you get a sense of it you know you get a sense of the people or the world right i think of what we got of the cree home world it's a bit kind of like generic spacey right kind of chrome buildings and i thought that was kind of by design that they were the okay yeah i got the sense that to me at least that it was kind of by design. Okay, yeah. I got the sense that, to me at least, that it was kind of like their world was kind of very clean and sterile.
Starting point is 00:52:30 Yeah. Like it was kind of they are kind of an elite alien race. Then why are they all on a train, Mason? They should all be getting specialised wonder cars or whatever. Oh, good point. They should all get wonder cars. They should all have Ferraris like in Bright. Yes, but it might also be that we don't spend that much time there. or whatever they should all get wonder cars they should all have they should all have Ferraris like in Bright yes but it might also be that
Starting point is 00:52:46 but also like we don't spend that much time there yeah that's also true but you know like on Guardians when they go to like the prostitute planet
Starting point is 00:52:52 in Guardians 2 or whatever sure okay you get a sense of that world immediately and we're there for like a minute and a half and you're like
Starting point is 00:52:57 how do I book a ticket to here where can I yeah but I also like you know because when they go through a jump point
Starting point is 00:53:03 it just sort of opens up in like this sort of geometric pattern that was like guardians too was it yeah okay okay i was like well that's kind of clean and geometric like it kind of yeah fits with that universe but i i see what you're saying but yeah i and i think like a lot of the earth stuff just kind of looks like the way that the winter soldier looks or whatever like it keeps that visual style but it's not that's not i don't think any of that any of that is kind of the design elements to stand out other than some pretty good costume stuff i thought the the and we've seen this in the trailer so it doesn't really spoil the the chase sequence on the train i thought that was good sure i think and i had a little little some twists and turns
Starting point is 00:53:37 to that as well i thought it was all right okay i think also because we've seen a lot of that in the trailers maybe okay i'd only really seen her punch the old lady in the face okay right because i just re-watched that over and over and over again. Yeah, it's good, isn't it? But I thought... I thought that was good, solid. Yeah. Good, solid action sequence.
Starting point is 00:53:50 Well, the Skrulls being able to shapeshift was a really interesting element that they could bring into this and who's what and... Uh-huh. We'll probably talk more about that in spoilers about who is it and who isn't. I think they used it...
Starting point is 00:53:58 I think it built a good amount of tension. Yes. Even though they... I think it was used quite sparingly, but I think it also built a lot of tension. agree uh and yeah i think i think i was expecting it to to go a certain way in terms of everyone's a scroll who's a scroll what's what's going on everybody in this movie could be a scroll but i think they sort of and i thought well that's going to be exhausting and not fun but they had that off they had that off fairly quickly yeah yeah i i like the turn
Starting point is 00:54:24 it took. Even though I kind of... If you know a bit about the comics or you've done extensive trailer breakdowns for hours on end, you may have seen some of these twists coming. But I still think they're handled well. And there were still some surprises in here that I didn't see coming or hadn't expected. Which, I mean, maybe you can work out as the film goes on. But I didn't think about going in.
Starting point is 00:54:44 Same. Yeah. The de-aging's great. Yeah. You know where it falls down? Tell me. which I mean that maybe you can work out as the film goes on but I didn't think about going in same yeah the de-aging's great yeah you know where it falls down tell me when Nick Fury has to fight
Starting point is 00:54:51 and punch and run because he's clearly 70 oh yeah he's got the he's got the moves of a man who's 70 yeah you can't
Starting point is 00:54:58 you can't hide that you can't de-age they look like they bulked him up a bit his suit yeah right they put some padding in the shoulders
Starting point is 00:55:04 yeah right whatever maybe he's just that big I don't know but yeah yeah but that de-aging it's good yeah They look like they bulked him up a bit, his suit. Yeah, right. You see that they put some padding in the shoulders or whatever. Maybe he's just that big, I don't know. But that de-aging. It's good, yeah. Not as good on Coulson in times, I found. Maybe because there's a scene at the end where they're kind of having a chat in the office and he looks pretty smooth. I also feel, and again, I don't know how the de-aging works,
Starting point is 00:55:21 but I kind of get the sense that it requires a certain amount of old footage. It's old footage, yeah, reference footage. It's also time. Yeah, right. Apparently, it's a lot like giving somebody a facelift in real life. Okay. Like it's literally like just pulling back on certain... Yeah, right, okay.
Starting point is 00:55:37 So they map the face and so it's all mobile. Like it's 3D and mobile and then they move it. Okay, that's fascinating. Apparently, from when they first kind of started doing it in X-Men 3 with Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen, the technology hasn't really changed. Yeah, right. It's mostly the same, but it's the same basic structure
Starting point is 00:55:55 of kind of just pulling back. Yeah, right. Because if you go too far, then it looks weird, especially when you know what Samuel L. Jackson looked like in 1995. That's true, yeah. So you can't... It's a really tricky thing to nail. And I think they did a really good job of it.
Starting point is 00:56:08 Yeah, because I think they have less footage of Clark Gregg from, because I mean, you know, he's been in other stuff prior. The New Adventures of Old Christine, probably. Exactly. But the first time I saw him, it was Iron Man. Yeah. And so that's, you know, that's. You probably saw him in stuff and didn't realize.
Starting point is 00:56:22 Yeah, exactly. But I mean, that's, you know, and this is 12 or 13 years before that. So yeah, they're sort of, I guess they probably went to like 2008 and then they went, okay, now pull it back a little further. Give him a wig. Give him a wig. Give him that hairline, you know? Yeah, absolutely.
Starting point is 00:56:38 But I think the CGI on the whole was good i think when we see up close of that captain marvel cgi model yes flying about not as good like clearly looks like it's a bit matrix reloaded to me it was face so i was going to say to me it was the face i think i think the the the overall look of the body was fine yes but it's the and it's also because in a lot of cases she's wearing the the helmet she's wearing the helmet and so we only really get we don't we don't we don't get eyes really we get glowing white eyes and we get just the mouth and it's it's a little odd yeah it is yeah because i think also you can tell when she's actually there and in it and they pull back or pull in but when it's not hers her and you get up close it's a bit yeah probably would have benefited
Starting point is 00:57:25 from actually using her for that particular moment but uh which is why i think for the most part no mask and that works yeah definitely yeah but the suit though i really like i like the way they revealed it i like how when she powers up like the crackling of electricity and fire yep and that that that's kind of going on there i also like the cree suit that it comes from that the green one yeah for sure design and because a lot of people were down on that initially they were like on set photo she looks like garbage and it's like well they're gonna tweak it also it's not supposed to look as good as the final suit exactly yeah right and so i think it's a good evolution within that particular movie i also thought this did a really good job of fleshing
Starting point is 00:58:05 out her character like a bit kind of like who is this person what does she stand for where is she from and you do get an idea of that but then as it goes on as she gets more memories and she meets people who knew her and so on it made me want to see more of this character and i'm looking forward to seeing that on where she's if she shows up infinity war let's say do you mean end game end game she's definitively not in Infinity War. Yes, she's not. I don't want to do any spoilers yet. We'll talk spoilers in a minute.
Starting point is 00:58:30 We'll talk spoilers later. I want to see what she's maybe been doing for 15 years. Yeah, for sure. How have her powers evolved or devolved, what she's like as a person now. Yeah, right. So I think it did a good job of setting up the character for future movies.
Starting point is 00:58:42 Yes. I agree. Good supporting cast as well, I thought. Yeah. Again, good buddy chemistry between her and Samuel L. Jackson. setting up that setting up the character for future movies yes yeah i agree yeah good sporting cast as well i thought yeah again a good good buddy chemistry between her and samuel jackson we get uh we get maria rambo yes we get it we get a former former co-pilot i didn't buy that initially when they were sitting together and like we're we're good friends and we did lots of activity i'm like this feels a bit forced but But then after that scene, I feel like it opened up a little bit more. I agree.
Starting point is 00:59:07 Yeah. I thought the musical cues, some were great and some were like, it's the 90s, we fucking get it. We get it. Yeah, exactly. There's come as you are, but it drops at a point. And I'm like, yeah, it's the 90s. I've heard some people some people have said
Starting point is 00:59:25 okay she disappeared in 89 and come as you are came in in 92 that's in my easter egg video Mason maybe she got maybe she hurt it in the car it's not a plot hole it's fine also apparently that Street Fighter 2 game she plays in the arcade
Starting point is 00:59:41 that version came out in 92 or whatever well maybe it's an old... It's a bar. Maybe it's a different universe. But it's a bar. It'd just be a... Oh, you mean she plays it in the 80s. Oh, I see.
Starting point is 00:59:52 But also it's a different universe where Star Wars exists, but Samuel L. Jackson also is in Star Wars and Nick Fury in the universe or whatever. But we never see the Star Wars prequels in the movie, so maybe it's a different actor. That's true. Maybe it's Terrence Howard. Maybe it's Terrence Howard. Maybe it is Terrence Howard.
Starting point is 01:00:07 Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So the music cues, there's one, there's a couple that work really well. I agree. I think when they do,
Starting point is 01:00:13 I'm just a girl, that's a really fun moment. But a lot of the, a lot of the, I disagree, but all right. Really? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:00:19 I didn't like it. I guess it just depends on what you, you know, personal preference, I guess, personal preference. Yeah. But some of them, I think maybe it, for me, it would be a function, personal preference, I guess, Mason. Personal preference, yeah. But some of them...
Starting point is 01:00:25 I think maybe, for me, it would be a function of how they inserted it in. Okay. Like, where do you hit the chorus and what have you. I think maybe it was... Oh, right, okay, yeah. I thought it was kind of a fun kind of, like... It is fun. I think if I...
Starting point is 01:00:37 Almost like a relief and kind of, like, opening up of your powers and your abilities. Yeah, right, okay, that's cool, yeah. But some of them, some of it felt a bit like you know like guardians has retro music yeah it's not a bit like it's the same it's the same trap that suicide squel suicide squel suicide you know suicide squel i've seen it yeah well anyway it's the same trap that suicide squad fell into yeah which is just people like music just throw it in just throw it in set a mood with some music throw it in throw it. And I think that also goes into what I was talking about earlier. Back in the 90s, that's all we had was music.
Starting point is 01:01:09 That's why it was so relentless. We had dial-up that kept dropping out. Just give us some music. Put a CD on. Put a CD on. Put a CD on. Put a Celine Dion CD on. Thank you.
Starting point is 01:01:21 Yes. So I think some of those music cues went along with the generic look of some of this film. Yeah. Yeah. For me. I'm trying to think of, I'm going to look it up. I'm trying to think of some of the music that was in this.
Starting point is 01:01:33 I can bring up a list. Please. Because they revealed the soundtrack. So I will, this I guess is kind of a spoiler for soundtrack. It is a spoiler. It's a soundtrack spoiler. It's a soundtrack spoiler,
Starting point is 01:01:42 but none of them is like. You don't want to, you don't want to be spoiled when Sister Hazel comes on for example or Our Lady Peace. That's right.
Starting point is 01:01:50 Here's the list. Okay spoilers for the soundtrack. Urge Overkill. Where was Urge Overkill? Good question. Where was that
Starting point is 01:01:56 song that P. Diddy did for Godzilla the movie? Yes come with me. Thank you. Okay this isn't really a spoiler
Starting point is 01:02:01 because it's just songs in the movie but if you care skip ahead. Crazy on You Kiss Me Deadly What a Man Connection
Starting point is 01:02:09 Only Happy When It Rains that one felt a bit kind of yeah I can't get it but at least I never really liked that song at least it wasn't raining yeah you're right
Starting point is 01:02:17 exactly because in Suicide Squad they'd put that in when it was raining yes and somebody would be happy and they'd say Harley Quinn would be happy
Starting point is 01:02:24 because it was raining and they'd be like get out of the rain and she'd be like no but i'm happy when i'm only happy when it rains this is a real killer app she'd say crush with eyeliner waterfalls you gotta be come as you are just a girl man on the moon uh please mr postman the avengers theme uh celebrity skin i'm'm enjoying that Avengers theme more and more. Well, we had a question about it, actually. Let's do it now. Okay. We had it on Twitter.
Starting point is 01:02:49 Yeah, because they've finally drilled it into us when we recognised it. Yeah, that's true. Yeah. This is from, we're going to save this a bit later, but this is from, what have we got here? Danny, do you think the Avengers music is finally becoming more memorable? Yes. Yes, it is.
Starting point is 01:03:04 Yeah. Because we recognise it now, don't we? Yeah. But right now at this moment, if you were like hum the riff, hum the swelling thing, I couldn't do it. That's a really good point. That's a thing. But when I hear it, I'm like... Yeah.
Starting point is 01:03:19 Okay. All right. Yeah. But we couldn't do it in unison. No. Somebody would have to start us off. We can do everything in unison no somebody would have to somebody would have to start us off we can do everything in unison that's right music yeah um yeah i i and i think it goes a long way to like where you hear it in things yeah like when you when you hear it in infinity war
Starting point is 01:03:36 it's the first time it's when captain america shows up again for the first time we're all like oh i mostly remember from the end of trailers as the logo. If I think about the logo coming together or spinning, I can do it. Yeah. You know what? I think this movie, I really liked the start. I know you said you were confused because you don't understand me. I don't understand you. I'm an old man.
Starting point is 01:03:55 Sorry, you're 21 or a different age. I'm 21 or a different age, yeah. I felt it kind of dragged a bit in the Earth stuff. Even though I liked the Nick Fury banter, it kind of meandered for a bit. And then it kind of hit what the movie's about. And about and then it picked up for me yeah then it was go time then it was go time yeah i like that i liked her established i liked i what i enjoyed it because it's it's kind of a fish out of water movie to some extent but also she's not an idiot yes so she didn't show up and be like what is this earth machine yeah what is this this hover car is on
Starting point is 01:04:24 wheels or whatever. She's like, you got to help me out here. Where's this thing? Where's this? Because she doesn't even know she's from there. Yeah, right. Yeah. Spoiler, she's from there.
Starting point is 01:04:32 Spoiler, she is. I mean, it's in the trailers, a lot of it. Do you want to do... People were concerned that this was going to be like a man-hating, coming at your white man, look out. Yeah, right. Look out. You're not invited or whatever kind of movie.
Starting point is 01:04:46 I guess we can't say anything bad about this movie because we're accused of being sexist. I've never thought that for even a second. It's also not that. No, it's not that at all. It's just like a pretty solid... If anything, if I was critical about this movie, it's the criticisms that I would level against all origin movies.
Starting point is 01:05:03 Yeah. Which is, we don't really need them. Sure, yeah. But I mean, I think... I think this though is going to inform a lot of Infinity War in a good way. Yes, for sure. I think, yeah. Yeah, I think it's just...
Starting point is 01:05:16 Yeah, like origin stories just can be a bit slow. Yeah. Especially when we've got a pre-established universe where we've got a whole bunch of characters that we already like. Yeah. And it's like, just get to the action kind of thing. But yeah, it's good and solid and fun. Yeah. Especially when we've got a pre-established universe where we've got a whole bunch of characters that we already like. Yeah. And it's like, just get to the action kind of thing. But yeah, it's good, good and solid and fun. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:05:29 What are we talking about again? There, you know, there are, there is some stuff in this that I feel like was kind of telegraphed in terms of like. Like, oh, the smile bit. Like. Yeah. Or like, there's, you know, there's a moment where. Also that happens a lot.
Starting point is 01:05:41 Like people are like, is that a bit that bigger deal you ask anybody yeah that happens like all the time you know chanel who does a podcast with claire she gets out in the city like all the time yeah exactly why don't you smile more exactly look better if you smiled yeah and it's always like yeah maybe maybe cheer up maybe it'll never happen you don't know maybe it did happen you know don't ask people to smile don't ask people to smile um oh yeah there's a there's a couple of moments in it where it's like where it's a little bit telegraphed where i feel like what is happening is going to lead up to a uh an action beat that proves she's the hero
Starting point is 01:06:14 or she does you know that uh that that we'll talk about in spoilers but uh yeah but and and it's a little bit i'm like i absolutely know where this is going to go but I enjoyed it anyway yes yeah I think was I saying this in this episode or was I saying to you before the show let's find out
Starting point is 01:06:29 I've said it yes but yeah that's your problem you just don't remember I just don't said it that yeah often you can kind of
Starting point is 01:06:36 predict where a movie's going but if you're enjoying the characters you did say that in this episode yes yes you did just that thing I said exactly
Starting point is 01:06:42 again like there are essential elements to a superhero movie and you need them for the story to progress. And that doesn't mean they're a horrible, horrifying cliche and should be eliminated forever. I think it did, as you mentioned, it does a good job of kind of twisting the origin a little bit so it's not exactly how Doctor Strange plays out
Starting point is 01:07:03 or exactly how Iron Man plays out. Do you want to do spoilers to do spoilers anyway let's do spoilers i'm gonna say best movie ever i enjoyed this a lot i thought it was good yeah and i'm and fun excited to see what happens to captain marvel after this me too now let's talk about that right now spoilers spoilers let's talk about what happens immediately she's a scroll no no mason let's talk about scrolls though yeah okay do you think people are going to be upset by this little turn? That the Skrulls are good? That the Skrulls... Well, this particular sect of Skrulls are good anyway.
Starting point is 01:07:29 Yeah, because a lot of the Skrulls are not good. Well, I mean, you could very... I think it was a fun... I think some people are going to be upset because, you know, traditionally all the alien races in the Marvel Universe have been invented to be villains. And if you bring one in and go, hey, you thought these guys were villains,
Starting point is 01:07:44 but actually they're refugees, people might be upset by that but i'm again a lot of the scrolls are good in the comics though yeah i think you can you can very easily go okay or refugees yeah if you want to change this you could say okay well this particular uh you know this particular group of scrolls are good but the the empire still exists and they're still evil over here though yes so if you want to make villainous Skrulls you can do it again. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:08:07 But I really like the turn that they weren't. Yes. Didn't see it coming. Do you think it's going to see I think We're not even talking about Ben Mendelsohn.
Starting point is 01:08:14 He's great. Yeah let's talk about it now in spoilers. That accent is really jarring. I loved it. And by that accent I mean his Australian accent. I loved it.
Starting point is 01:08:21 And the fact that he's just an Australian bloke Yep. In Korean Skrull Maker. That's what I loved about it. Okay then good. We didn just an Australian bloke in Korean scroll maker. That's what I loved about it. Okay, then good. We didn't really talk about the cast much in general. No, we didn't really.
Starting point is 01:08:30 It's all fine. It's all good. It's all fine. Yeah, so I think there's kind of hints towards the Kree aren't bad because there's a few of them who get the jump on, sorry, the scrolls aren't bad, get a jump on the Kree at the start and they don't kill them. That's true,
Starting point is 01:08:45 yeah. Like, one gets right up to the sniper, and could shoot him in the head, but doesn't. But doesn't, that's true, yeah.
Starting point is 01:08:51 There's moments like that, that happen, like they, they could kill them any number of times, and they choose not to. It's good that you've thought about this, because it's, often times when there is a big reveal like this.
Starting point is 01:08:59 That's the problem Mason, I don't thought about this. When you go back, often times it'll be like, well if this character was good, why did he shoot this guy in the head, or. I don't thought about this. When you go back, oftentimes it'll be like, well, if this character was good, why did he shoot this guy in the head or whatever? But if you, I'm glad that you've gone back and realized, yeah, that. Because Talos doesn't, he doesn't torture Brie Larson. That's exactly true.
Starting point is 01:09:16 Or like hit her in the head with a rock and demand information out of her. Yeah, exactly. That's one bit I did like. I did like when they were probing the memories and the way they were moving through them. Yeah, right. I thought that was really. That was fun. that's one bit I did like I did like when they were probing the memories and the way they were moving through them yeah right I thought that was really that was fun it was an interesting visual look
Starting point is 01:09:28 where you know she's she ejects from I think she ejects from a plane or she comes out of the plane and they're like try it again and so the ejector
Starting point is 01:09:35 just falls back into the plane yeah that was great yeah so yeah so the twist I didn't see I saw coming but I still like the way it was revealed
Starting point is 01:09:43 and I you know we thought Jude Law was going to be Yon-Rogg, and he was, and shock of all shocks. Thanks, Funko Pops. But there's a little bit of Mar-Vell in him, the way that he trains her and she respects him and whatever. Yeah, right. But the real Mar-Vell shows up,
Starting point is 01:09:58 which I didn't expect, was played by... Annette Bening. Annette Bening, who's also the Supreme Intelligence. I liked that wrinkle on it. Yeah, same. Apparently they were originally going to cast it as a guy, was played by Annette Bening, who's also the Supreme Intelligence. I liked that wrinkle on it. Yeah. Apparently they were originally going to cast it as a guy, but then they had the idea, well, if she's seeing the Supreme Intelligence,
Starting point is 01:10:11 then maybe that could be that because she knows this person beforehand and you bring into whatever. Yeah, right. So that's where that kind of evolved from, which I like. One element I did like as well is that it felt to me,
Starting point is 01:10:21 one of the Star Wars-y elements that I felt I enjoyed about this is they were after a lightspeed engine. All right. Which is kind of like, you know, that's kind of fun and kind of sci-fi serial-y. Yeah. Like, we're going to get the lightspeed engine. And they don't. That's all I had for that.
Starting point is 01:10:37 That's good. No, that's true. I would be, what was I going to, I can't remember what I was going to say. It was about Yon-Rogg. Yes. I enjoyed that they still had a banter even while they were evil there were enemies you know and but again something that was a bit telegraphed but i enjoyed anyway is the moment towards the end where he's he you know he gets up and he's like let's go let's go we're gonna fight hand to hand we're
Starting point is 01:10:59 gonna put my weapons away let's fight and you can finally prove to my prove to me that you don't need you know you can prove to me that you don't need you know you can prove to me that you're better if you can and then she just blasts him and says i don't need to prove anything i'm like that is that is absolutely coming it's very it was also what you would do in that scenario yeah for sure why would you why would you exactly he might beat you and then bad things would happen so why would you that i enjoyed that a lot and it was very similar to the bit in the avengers where loki's like i'm gonna come at me, Hulk, I'm going to what? And then his Hulk just smashes him to pieces.
Starting point is 01:11:27 Absolutely, yeah. I like that bit a lot. Yeah, so there is a moment where her powers are unlocked. First of all, I like the bit where her hands were cuffed and she's that fight scene. Yeah, that scene's good, yeah. Actually, I really liked that bit. I said they were a bit flat, but that one I really liked.
Starting point is 01:11:39 But then when she gets her powers and she's just kind of battering spaceships out of the sky, it's kind of like, okay, you know. Yeah, right. Yeah. But I think also that's just a function of our character development has happened and, you know, she's struggled a lot and now she's at this moment. I don't think it had to necessarily be that creative.
Starting point is 01:12:00 It didn't have to be. Well, it wasn't. No, I know. But it felt like okay well this is just kind of the cathartic yeah she's just gonna blast i mean and it didn't go for 40 minutes no that's true and i enjoyed the part where she flew through the spaceship and it exploded in segments i thought that was really good yeah um yeah i also think there is and we've talked about this before there is the risk that you've overpowered this character and then in follow-up
Starting point is 01:12:23 movies like can she beat thanos easily and whatever but i think compared to say the hulk but more thor she's not that different i don't think i don't think she is aside from the flight thing which thor can do yeah i don't think there's that much of a difference no i feel like thor you know you've seen we've seen we've seen iron man fly through one of those giant space whales and blow it up yes scale wise it's not that much more it's not that much bigger you know and thor can could probably knock a spaceship out i think he could i feel like it's weird we haven't seen that or maybe we have seen it yeah i remember it yeah um especially if he's got his hammer
Starting point is 01:12:57 yeah if we can very quickly jump to the post-credits sequence. So, yeah. So, we get what is probably a clip from Endgame. Seems to be, yeah. Where the pager has stopped transmitting. Yep. And we think it's out of power, but no, it stopped transmitting because Captain Marvel is on Earth. She's back.
Starting point is 01:13:17 She looks a little the worse for wear. She does, yeah. And I think, yeah, that leads me to wonder what has happened in the interim. Yes. Has everything she's fought for turned into disaster? Or is she just annoyed that she had to fly back a galaxy or two? Yeah, I think she asks where Fury is, obviously.
Starting point is 01:13:34 Yeah, who's dead. Do you think... Well, there's been some description of some footage and they're like, where you been? And she's like, well, not every planet has the Avengers. So that's what I've been doing. Oh, she's been protecting planets that don't have a superpowered task force of their own that's that's the rumor okay that's cool anyway yeah and i was saying that the the idea that she looks quite frazzled and worse for wear also maybe lends lends credence
Starting point is 01:13:57 to the theory that she was one of the credence yep. Oh, I thought you were referencing the movie Creed. I wish. Yeah. But it makes me wonder if that theory of the Creed. Creed 2-dence. Sorry. Thank you. That maybe she was killed and she was meant to be one of the people killed in the snap.
Starting point is 01:14:18 Oh, yeah. But she is just holding on by a thread. I've said that, Mason. That's what I'm saying. That's my theory. That's your theory that I'm lending credence to. Credence to. Yeah, credence to.
Starting point is 01:14:30 Credence. That, you know, maybe she is going to be significantly depowered in Endgame. Yes. Because she's using up all her energy to not die. To not be obliterated, yeah. Again, I don't think any... I think it is bizarre that people
Starting point is 01:14:45 are worried that she is just going to show up in the last scene of end game and like flick thanos on the nose and he's going to explode it's not going to happen it seems to be that she's going to be a character who's one of the avengers yes exactly she's not just going to fly in at the last bit and just knock him out yeah and again this this could end with endgame could end with her rig you know coming back into full power or not maybe she comes back with a significantly reduced power level i'm totally okay with her having like a real blast at the end of this movie and then being less powered in the next one or again all you have to do if you do if you when we when we get a captain marvel 2 is you just put her in an arena where she's fighting more powerful villains.
Starting point is 01:15:28 Yes. Again, that's how you do a good Superman villain fight, is you make the villain more powerful than him, because he goes to an alien world where everybody's just more powerful than him. It's so easy. Absolutely. And I guess that's where they're talking about going with sequels. Yeah. Instead of doing something after Endgame, there's that gap in there, which I guess is what Wonder Woman is doing also.
Starting point is 01:15:47 There's that time period that they can fill in in the middle of the movies, which I think would be a good way to do it. Because I want to see more space stuff. Yeah. And if they're doing the Eternals as well, maybe you can tie that in. Again, she would have a tough time against the Eternals, I think. Yeah, that's right. Especially all of them at once.
Starting point is 01:16:01 Yeah. And again, we've got Maria's daughter. Yes. Monica Rambeau, who in the comic books has been captain marvel yeah one point or another 30 odd 30 odd and so bring her in uh i think she's so in the in the marvel comic book universe we have the ultimates yes which is uh like a cosmic super team so it's captain marvel it's monica rambo who is currently spectrum i believe okay it's blue marvel it's monica rambo who is currently spectrum i believe okay it's blue marvel who's like a marvel superman all right it's black panther oh yeah uh and america miss america who is like a trans-dimensional it's a cool team it is a cool team and they and
Starting point is 01:16:38 they they go out in deep space and fight like and you know encounter galactus and annihilation waves and all sorts of stuff so i would love to see a team give us a Blue Marvel origin. Like a Space Avengers, basically. Like a Space Avengers and throw them out there. And again, the Guardians of the Galaxy are saving the universe, but just it's kind of... They're more garbage men. They're more garbage men, exactly.
Starting point is 01:16:58 They're more saving the universe out of happenstance because they just happen to be there. I would like a team that's actively like, there's a lot of trouble out there. We got to... Like the Vindicators from Rick and Morty. Exactly. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 01:17:09 We got to go out there and they're like a no-nonsense team. Yes. And again, we've got Black Panther. Throw him in there. Absolutely, yeah. Yeah. Definitely.
Starting point is 01:17:17 Bloody oath. All of those things we can see. I think people are going to have a big problem with, some people anyway, the Nick Fury losing his eye to a cat yes that's right it's not a real cat it's a flergen
Starting point is 01:17:26 it's a flergen or whatever did you like the reveal of the flergen I saw it coming but yes I did I like that everybody's afraid like is like get that fucking cat away from me it's like it's a cat
Starting point is 01:17:38 don't worry about it it's like it's not a cat yeah right and then you see it eat some people yeah no I did like it yeah
Starting point is 01:17:44 I thought it was going to like talk or be a scrawl or something maybe or so to a point but I'm glad they didn't go that way
Starting point is 01:17:50 exactly they do ask Mendo at one point if he can turn into a filing cabinet or a Venus flytrap that bit I really liked actually
Starting point is 01:17:56 yeah yeah that was some good why would I turn into a filing cabinet good fun banter yeah
Starting point is 01:18:01 love that Australian-ness yeah okay he's good in that. I like... Yeah. You know what? We've said it earlier, but it's good characters in that. I'm glad he didn't die.
Starting point is 01:18:10 Me too. Well, he could definitely show up in something. Yes. Yeah. I don't know if they're going to do Secret Invasion anytime soon. That's the... You know what? I guess that's the biggest twist of this, is we have spent a long time speculating...
Starting point is 01:18:23 Who's a Skrull? Who's a Skrull in this universe? Maybe no one's a scroll. Cause they've just, this is maybe the first time they've arrived on earth. They were, the scrolls seem to be surprised at what they found on earth. So maybe they've never been.
Starting point is 01:18:33 It's like you mentioned earlier though, like there's different, there might be a different sect of skulls or a different, cause there's good Kree and bad Kree and et cetera and so forth. So we could have a secret invasion. Or I'm also happy with the idea that maybe... Or they could change their minds later. They might be like, we like this Earth place.
Starting point is 01:18:52 Let's come back and... We enjoy your surfboards. Exactly. And Vegemite, because they're Australian. Yeah, nice. They're all Australian. I like the reveal that Mendo is like... The cosmic cube's in it, but he doesn't care.
Starting point is 01:19:02 He just wants his family. Yeah, that's cool. That was interesting. I made a video on the tesseract and why it's in this movie because it's kind of it goes missing for decades and then it's a it's a it's a strange inclusion but it does actually line up um so here's this this that's reminded me what does marvel need the tesseract for to power the the light speed engine or to to yeah to use as a yeah it's a source of energy or source of study to make the
Starting point is 01:19:25 light speed engine oh okay right so she doesn't because at the end of the movie they captain marvel takes the scrolls presumably to another galaxy or another yeah star system but she doesn't need the tesseract because she's got she's she's yeah she's got the power source okay right okay cool which that could also play into infinity war because if she's she could technically be tesseract powered like the like skullet witch yeah exactly so thanos could be able to you know that could she he could be able so that well that's the thing he could be able to depower her yeah maybe she can shut down the infinity gauntlet somehow briefly we don't know yet maybe she could just fly in at the last minute what we should do is we should theorize about it yeah from for the next couple of months
Starting point is 01:20:03 one month and then when it doesn't occur exactly as how we thought it should, we can get mad about it. Okay. How's that sound? Let's get on Rotten Tomatoes. Let's get on Rotten Tomatoes right now. Man, yeah. Yeah. Just quickly on the Fury Eye thing.
Starting point is 01:20:16 Did you like that? Look, did we both call this to a certain degree? You thought the cat was going to do it. Kind of as a joke. And I said, I think there should have been more fake outs. There was one? Yeah, there was one. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:20:29 There was one, I think he hurts his eye in the accident. Like a running gag in, if people have seen Hot Tub Time Machine, Crispin Glover has got one arm. Yes. In the modern day. And then in the past,
Starting point is 01:20:41 you see him juggling chainsaws and he gets it stuck in an elevator door. Yeah, right. And then at the end he gets hit by a car or something. Something like that, yeah. Yeah. I would have liked to see more fake heads or even him not lose the eye. Okay, yeah.
Starting point is 01:20:53 In this movie. Yeah. I think that would upset people more. Would it? Yeah. Even though there's like another decade or so of him. Yes. He could have lost an eye there.
Starting point is 01:21:01 He could have lost an eye there. Yeah, yeah. You know what? I'm still mad that his eye doesn't do anything in the movies. Maybe it does. No, I don't think it does. Because remember when he, in Civil War, he takes the eye. It's just a big scratch through it.
Starting point is 01:21:12 And it's just a muddy, milky eye. From a cat. He should have a laser in it or something. That's all I'm saying. Maybe he can have a laser after Endgame. Yeah, that's true. Maybe he could have got a laser put in. You would get a laser put in.
Starting point is 01:21:23 Maybe he gets a laser put in in between now and Civil War. Yeah. And at some point he accidentally doubly lasers his eye. Do you notice also he goes out of his way to mention he doesn't have a family? I feel like he's got a family. Oh, I see. Right. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:21:39 I feel like he... Because he's got... There's Nick Fury Jr. This is in my story video as well. Yeah, right. He's got an evil son as well, I think. Maybe, yeah. At some point. Yeah, I think... Because he's got there's Nick Fury Jr. This is in my story video as well. Yeah right. He's got an evil son as well I think. Maybe yeah. At some point.
Starting point is 01:21:47 Yeah I think because he's got secrets. Look we've all got secrets. He might have a family or a family he doesn't know about or whatever. Yeah that's true. Anyway that's
Starting point is 01:21:55 that's movies. It is movies. That's Captain Marvel. It's good. It is good. I at the end of it I was like alright. That was kind of
Starting point is 01:22:03 I was also alright. Yeah it was good. Didn't love it but yeah. I liked it, all right. That was kind of... I was also all right. Yeah, it was good. Didn't love it, but yeah. I liked it a lot. But it was a bit bloody offensive to me in all ways. Oh, sure, for sure. Exactly. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 01:22:14 It just felt like it was being shoved down your throat. It did feel like that, Mason. Excuse me while I log into Rotten Tomatoes to create my 10,000th account. Danny says, Captain Marvel is the worst movie yet. Weak main performances, dull colors, predictable twists, and adds nothing to the MCU. Plus how come she never becomes either a captain or someone named Marvel?
Starting point is 01:22:36 She is a captain. Of the army? Yeah. By that you mean Air Force? No. I was going to say also a thing that i liked i really enjoyed the sequence where she is testing out all the different colors of the suit because we get some ridiculous ones i think we also get the like the the green and gray yep which is the
Starting point is 01:22:55 sort of which we get the black and white shield one yeah i'd like to think that i like the neon one yeah it's just fun for a second yeah that was fun yeah uh peter says just saw captain marvel pretty decent great acting all around. A lot of backstory and plot to cram in, but they managed it well. It's weird that Samuel L. Jackson's de-aging looked much better than Coulson's. Yeah, though I guess they probably spent more time on it,
Starting point is 01:23:15 I don't imagine. Yeah, I think that's probably true, yeah. Alexander says, Just saw Captain Marvel and had a great time. I liked the twist that Ben Mendelsohn was a Skrull the whole time. Who knew? Cap was cool. Can't wait to see where they go
Starting point is 01:23:25 with the character in the future. And Marty says Marty from the Grey Mates group. I don't think I can comprehend how important Captain... I don't think I comprehended how important Captain Marvel would be. It was indescribable to see such a powerful woman represented who also passed the Bechdel test and to see her stand up against sexism throughout the movie. This movie matters so much.
Starting point is 01:23:42 And that is all the reviews that we got sent. That's all the opinions. That's four of the reviews we got sent. Wow. This movie matters so much. And that is all the reviews that we got sent. All the opinions. That's four of the reviews we got sent. Wow. There we go. Then that's, now it's time for... What we reading. What we gonna read.
Starting point is 01:23:52 What we gonna read. I'm doing the thing. What are we reading today? What have you been reading, Mason? Well, inspired by Clark Gregg in Captain Marvel. You've been watching the new Adventures of Old Christine. Yeah, I've been watching the new Adventures of Old Christine.
Starting point is 01:24:12 She's old, Christine, but you better believe she's still got a few tricks up her sleeve. I would hope so, Mason. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But also, I bought season 5 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. I'm going to get back in. I'm going to watch it. I spent $31.50 on it. What platform are you watching it on?
Starting point is 01:24:26 Digital download thing. Digital and download. Google Play. Googs Play. I bought it on Google Play. Good on you, mate. Do you watch it through your TV or do you watch it through your app machine?
Starting point is 01:24:36 Watch it on the TV. That's a good way to watch things. Yeah, big screen. Are you looking forward to it? Aren't they wrapping them up? Maybe doing one more season? They're wrapping up. Will Smith's coming in. Exactly. He's going to finish it off. They're doing one more season they're wrapping they're wrapping up Will Smith's coming in
Starting point is 01:24:45 exactly he's gonna finish it off they're doing two more seasons yes they renewed for season six which is coming out soon and then they then they already
Starting point is 01:24:52 double renewed for season seven I'm glad they've like they've I'm off board but they found their footing and people are really enjoying it it didn't get cancelled exactly yeah
Starting point is 01:25:02 like I've I've gone in and out but again like the first season, I was really intrigued to see what it was, and it was a bit of a, like, Monster of the Week, Artifact of the Week show, and I kind of dropped off. But again, as the ratings dropped,
Starting point is 01:25:16 apparently the quality got really good. And I've been back since and seen a few episodes. I've seen some of the Ghostwriter stuff, which is great. So I'm excited to get back on that. Quake. Also, this is unrelated to anything, but a friend of mine does a podcast.
Starting point is 01:25:29 His name's Trav Nash. Trav Nash. He's a comedian slash storyteller. And he has a podcast called Tales from the Mind Boat. And I've just been listening to it recently. And it's sort of like prepared monologues about various aspects of life and storytelling. Speaking of 90s music he did an episode uh talking about uh the beck song loser and like right like you
Starting point is 01:25:52 know that what was happening at the time when that song came out of his life as a loser and like he's he did he's done an episode about uh the massive heat wave we had in melbourne a while back uh he did an episode on uh going to see live music and like the feelings about that and all that sort of stuff. And it's like these kind of really interesting monologues about just life and stuff. And he puts like a nice music bed behind it. Is it weekly?
Starting point is 01:26:17 It is weekly. And he's done 150 episodes. Oh, wow. Yeah, yeah. It's really, really good. Do you want to say the name of that again? Trav Nash is his name. It's on Spotify.
Starting point is 01:26:24 It's on iTunes. It's on all the places. Do you want to say the name of that again? Trav Nash is his name. It's on Spotify. It's on iTunes. It's on all the places. Tales from the Mind Boat is what it's called. New Year's. He's talking about touring life and audiences and scams and all sorts of stuff. It's really interesting. I've listened to a few of the most recent episodes. He's been doing it for a while, and I'm like, I always want to get onto that.
Starting point is 01:26:44 I bet it's interesting, and it's really interesting. Excellent. That sounds right up my alley. That sounds really good. Good on him. Yeah. Tales from the Mind Boat. Yes.
Starting point is 01:26:52 I've been watching True Detective Season 3. I've got one episode to go. Oh, what do you think? It's much better than two. Okay. Which two I didn't hate, to be fair,
Starting point is 01:26:59 but it's much better. It's definitely follows more the beats of one where it's like, there's a case in the young men and then they come back and they're like, we're old now. Okay, right.
Starting point is 01:27:06 There's more mysteries to uncover. I was going to say, is there a mystical element of some sort? It doesn't seem to be. Yeah. As of so far. But it's got three threads that follow, three story points. It's like 1980, 1990, and then 2015. And the old man makeup, by the way, is spectacular.
Starting point is 01:27:23 And this is Ma Shali Ali. Yes, it is. And The Power of One, by the way, is spectacular. And this is Ma Shali Ali. Yes, it is. And The Power of One. His name is Deacon Frost. What's his name? Oh, yeah. He's Deacon Frost from Blade. Yes, that guy.
Starting point is 01:27:34 That guy, yeah. Yeah, who's also really good. And so it follows these three time periods. And I think they're balanced really well. But where I think it might fall down, and I haven't finished it yet. That being said, first of all, I really enjoy it. I'm really liking it. Is that the mystery isn't clearly solved by the present, by 2015.
Starting point is 01:27:54 So when they cut back, it's like, what are you going to reveal to me here that's going to change the element of this story? Oh, I see, right. Because you clearly haven't figured it out. Right, do you think maybe the last episode is where that's gonna happen i mean that that being said it's been so far it's been balanced really well and yeah i'm interested to see how it kind of wraps up but
Starting point is 01:28:13 i i like it and the performances are great and and it feel do you think this is a course correction in terms of people that like the second one they're just gonna do was the second one bad or was it there were elements of it i think there was some good stuff in it yeah there's a there's a particular in the second season there's a particular shootout yes which is it's it's a one shot i think it's one take or it might i don't i don't know if it is but it's definitely like it really hammers home it's just it's scary it's scary like it's a it's the police versus a kind of a gang yeah like a like a like a gang. And it's kind of the consequences. And there's so many bystanders getting shot. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:28:52 And it's just really grisly. And I'm like, I think season two was worth it just for that scene. It's like episode four, I think. Something like that. Or something like that. And it's just, it's worth it for that. I think season one had a one shot. Yes.
Starting point is 01:29:04 Or maybe it was very well edited. No, I think it was one shot but it's on a hay in a house yeah yeah and that that was great too does this season have anything like that not as that i've noticed as of so far what i what i think is interesting i think that's the true detective kind of lost its way or it lost its momentum i think because i think people were expecting out of season two the exact same thing they got out of season one. And I think the intention of True Detective was just show some different detective shows or some different detective stories that have different outcomes. Different time periods. Different time periods and explore different themes.
Starting point is 01:29:46 time periods and different uh different explore different themes yeah and i think when the second season was all about real estate and and and mobsters or mobsters and and whatever i think people like this doesn't have weird cult serial killer elements i'm not watching this anymore whereas whereas they never intended it to be like that i think if they'd maybe knocked out season three straight away i think it straight away, people would have been back on board maybe. It's a bit Halloween, Halloween three season of The Witch.
Starting point is 01:30:09 Yeah, yeah, right. Exactly. Again, I don't hate to, but I don't think it's as good as the other seasons. I think maybe they should have set out initially,
Starting point is 01:30:16 this is an anthology, the next season's going to be way different. They probably did say that. They probably said that and we all ignored it and went boo. Boo and boo.
Starting point is 01:30:22 Boo, where's the yellow king? Where's he? Where is the yellow king? Boo. Boo and boo where's the where's the yellow king where's where's he where is the yellow boo and boo okay so you'd recommend that yeah definitely i mean until i finish it then maybe maybe maybe the final episode will maybe the yellow king is back that's right if i hate it i'll let you know maybe vince vaughn's back in the second set in the third season right yeah good stuff good stuff what about now what Letters now? I think so. Letters now. Letters now. The classic one was letters.
Starting point is 01:30:50 This isn't the letters now theme. Sorry. Letters, they're only a take away. I know they're here right now. We're going to do letters. Letters now. It is letters now. See, it was the letters now theme.
Starting point is 01:31:01 You fixed it in the end. Mason, it's letters now. And if you want to get a letters now to the show you can hashtag weekly planet pod on twitter or shoot a gmail over to or email to weekly planet pod at gmail.com uh i've got an email here from kashu says marl mcu phase four predictions for the announced release dates but i think i might wait to see what happens in in end game okay yes right on there well i think as i mentioned earlier i would love to see a The Ultimates movie yes team up
Starting point is 01:31:26 Captain Marvel Spectrum Blue Marvel America Black Panther cool Cosmic Threats doing the work out there
Starting point is 01:31:34 Cosmic Threats Cosmic Jets Cosmic Threats and Cosmic Jets exactly that's what he's saying Fantastic Four put them in there X-Men I could take it or leave it I think
Starting point is 01:31:41 at this point but that's not the fault of the X-Men I think as characters it's more of a fault of lackluster last couple of X-Men, I could take it or leave it, I think, at this point. But that's not the fault of the X-Men, I think, as characters. It's more of a fault of lackluster last couple of X-Men movies. Agreed. Yeah. What have you got?
Starting point is 01:31:51 What else? Give me some... You know what? Give me some standalones. Yeah. Give me some standalones, some low-stakes stuff. Yeah, Spider-Man Far From Home. Give me a movie where it's just some heroes fighting some...
Starting point is 01:32:03 I want to see some more costumed villains okay mysterio style just yeah they don't do a lot of that some stolen some stolen technology or whatever or some just just some costumes villains robin banks and i want to see some heroes heroes uh some villains and i i guess the heroes and villains either but mysterio falls in this category it's just not somebody who found some tech, some alien tech. Yeah, right. Like it could just be a guy who's like, I built this thing or I have this whatever.
Starting point is 01:32:29 I built this illusion casting suit and I tried to sell it to Google and they weren't interested. So I've decided to be a villain. They went with Google Glass. They did, yeah. Yeah. This is something actually, I know you've got a letter, Mason, but just quickly,
Starting point is 01:32:40 we didn't, I guess this is a spoiler, so I'll put this in spoilers for Stanley's cameo in. Yeah, right, right, right. I'll mark it down, but I wouldn't say it's a movie spoiler. No. The opening of Captain Marvel has a Stanley tribute in the Marvel logo. Yes, it does. Which I quite liked.
Starting point is 01:32:56 And then he shows up on the train reading the script for Mallrats, which is a movie he is in, in 1995. That's right, yeah. But he doesn't look the age that he was, Mason, is what I'm saying. Oh, right. It's a different universe I guess it's true
Starting point is 01:33:06 but the question relating to this is did you like that first of all I did yeah that was great yeah it says
Starting point is 01:33:11 this is from Thornton Disney using Stanley's social media to promote Captain Marvel apparently it's a thing and I need a somewhat professional opinion to claim as my own
Starting point is 01:33:18 so I don't know if you saw this but if you go over to Stanley's Twitter is it the real Stanley something like that yeah it's like
Starting point is 01:33:24 Captain Marvel's in cinemas oniday excelsior or whatever yeah look i would i would probably if i were in charge of that but if they would ever hand me the keys to stanley social media and they never would yeah i'd probably change it to the estate of stanley or you know um i don't know something you know stanley tribute tribute and just make it very clear. Yeah. Yeah. That it's not him. We'll say,
Starting point is 01:33:49 this is one of the tweets that people don't like. Captain Marvel landed in Hollywood this past Monday for the movie's premiere. Read more about it the evening below. And it does feel a bit weird
Starting point is 01:33:59 because... Yeah, for sure. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But then... P.S. I'm dead. Yeah. But the last one, this one I quite like because it starts with,
Starting point is 01:34:05 Stan began writing comics in the 1940s, but he's famed in Skyrock until the 60s. He has a few ads promoting his early university appearances from Stanley Papers. Yeah. That kind of stuff, like, hey, this is the thing that Stanley did. How about change it to the Stanley Archive or something like that? And also you're not being like, this is Stanley speaking. Yeah, exactly. Yeah, no, I think the promotional tweets are weird.
Starting point is 01:34:27 I think if they're going to... Every once in a while, there is a Marvel, I think, attempt to push something too far and there's a little bit of a backlash and I think that this is probably one of those. It's pretty good adjusting. But then how do you feel about for the movies?
Starting point is 01:34:39 How far, how many movies do you get in before you're like, you've clearly put, you've clearly scanned Stan Lee, which I feel like they did for Captain Marvel, by the way. They put him in. It didn't look like that. I think, for me personally, I think it'd be fine to give him a cameo,
Starting point is 01:34:54 but maybe don't have him say anything he wouldn't say. Yes. Like, if he hasn't, just give him, for the rest of the movie, just give him a smile or a nod, but don't, I don't know. I guess you could have him speak, but... Using, like, pre-existing or a nod but don't i don't know i guess you could have him speak but like pre-existing dialogue or yeah i don't know because i mean you know it'd be okay if he's you know you know it'd be okay if he's a janitor and he's like oh hey cleaning up these messes or whatever but don't give him i think i think it'd be a fine line and don't give him anything too pointedly yeah odd to say i'm not sure. Unless it's something they've obviously recorded already.
Starting point is 01:35:26 In advance, yeah. Interesting, Mason. Yeah. You got a tweet there? Well, here's a tweet. I've got a couple. Here's a tweet, though. You asked if we're covering Captain Marvel.
Starting point is 01:35:35 Is there anything else you want us to get into on Twitter? Somebody's asked, what would you do if your wife, Greg, was a Skrull? It says Skrull, specifically. A Skrull? A Skrull. Like a coffee scroll. Oh, delicious. Yeah, that's what I'm saying.
Starting point is 01:35:47 That's what I'm saying. Look, and I'm assuming this isn't a typo. I'm going to go with this is not a typo. What would you do if your wife, Greg, was a scroll? Is it one of those things where it's a shallow hell situation where I've never noticed? I just perceive her a certain way and everyone else is aware that she's a coffee scroll. i think she's transformed into a scroll oh that's not as good that's more deceptive but i would like to just look up one day and then suddenly realize is she a scroll with like arms and legs no she's just a scroll can't talk huh so has she been talking this whole time she hasn't
Starting point is 01:36:20 wow we've all been imagining i think you should check yourself into a mental asylum that's step number one i think the question is would you eat the scroll probably because she's always been well I was going to say if she's always been a scroll that means
Starting point is 01:36:31 that you have been like raising your kid on your own yeah you've been doing all the work on your own there's been nobody supporting you where did the kid come from
Starting point is 01:36:38 exactly you've been whenever I'm like you got this I'm just going out yeah he's just fending for himself exactly this is a very deceptive scroll so I recommend eating the scroll yeah so Whenever I'm like, you got this, I'm just going out. Yeah. He's just fending for himself. Exactly.
Starting point is 01:36:45 This is a very deceptive scroll. So I recommend eating the scroll. Yeah. So... Like a scroll? No, like a... No. Like a parchment?
Starting point is 01:36:54 No, that's dumb. Like a coffee scroll. Yes. Or like, what do they call one of the... Cinnabon. Like a Cinnabon. Yeah, I get you. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:37:00 Okay. Yeah, I would eat it. Definitely. Yeah. Well, look, if we're talking food, Mason. Yes. Alejandro says your personal and in-depth thoughts about tacos. I'll tell you this thing, Mason.
Starting point is 01:37:09 I prefer a burrito, but whatever. Me too. Yeah. Because you bite into it, the bottom breaks. And it disintegrates. It's over. Yeah. That's right.
Starting point is 01:37:15 Party's over. Yeah. You got to go home. You've just performed the snap on your own dinner. Exactly. It just turns to dust and it floats out into the street. And then you're eating beans and meat with a fork. which i could just do yeah i know you could soft shell tacos or wraps are the way to go and the way of the future i don't mind a little bit of crunch
Starting point is 01:37:34 but why not put a little bit of crunch inside the wrap the wrap okay yeah yeah look at yeah again i prefer a burrito i also don't like to eat a burrito in the car you can't eat a bloody taco exactly yeah yeah i don't like surprises in my food yeah i don't like you need a burrito in the car you can't eat a bloody taco in the car exactly yeah yeah I don't like surprises in my food yeah I don't mind weird stuff sometimes but tell me what's in it
Starting point is 01:37:49 so I can be like none of that please yeah don't give me that thing don't trick me I'm with you on that any more letters if it's a steak and onion pie tell me it's a steak and onion pie
Starting point is 01:37:56 don't say it's a steak pie yeah and a bite in it with an onion in it you've tricked me because you can't take that out either can you can't take it out
Starting point is 01:38:03 I'd rather yeah you're in it exactly I've never had a Deadpool's all about the chimichanga which I believe
Starting point is 01:38:08 is a fried burrito is it a deep fried burrito what is it? you know what I don't know I'm going to look it up I'll also look it up you'll be faster
Starting point is 01:38:14 maybe I'm going to find my letter in the meantime okay I've got a letter here I know you did actually yeah you read me one before the show
Starting point is 01:38:19 that's right deep fried burrito there we go popular in Tex-Mex I would enjoy that I think here's a couple here's a couple of letters i have gallstones it'd kill me can't do it anymore no you're getting that bladder out what are you doing soon i saw a doctor yeah about it he said uh you need to get this out and i said what are you gonna do about it he said i'm gonna take it out and i said all right then big man big man take my gallbladder out what do you reckon
Starting point is 01:38:41 what do you think you're better than me he's like well I've got this doctorate and you're like ooh yeah pretty good pretty good also he had a podcast what yeah wow is he on podcast one no
Starting point is 01:38:51 okay yeah alright he's got a medical podcast okay I've got two letters this is from Evan hey Mr Scumbag Movies and Maceo
Starting point is 01:38:57 hey first of all thanks everybody for making Mr Scumbag Movies art somebody hang on
Starting point is 01:39:04 I'll find that as well somebody made a really great Mr Scumbag Movies is that Somebody, hang on, I'll find that as well. Somebody made a really great Mr. Scumbag Movies. Is that where you're the bin? There's that one where you're the bin, which is quite good. Well, there's a couple of good ones. There's one on the Planet Broadcasting Great Mates group from Benjamin Facione. Oh, yes.
Starting point is 01:39:17 Which is talking trash about Mr. Scumbag Movies. I don't think so. I think so. Everybody join the group if you want to find that one. Oh, that's on my Instagram, I think. Yeah, it's on your Instagram. That's really good. Thank you, everybody, for sending those.
Starting point is 01:39:28 Those are bloody good. But Evan wants to know, with the Batman getting a reboot, it's only a matter of time until we see a new Joker. I personally think Robert Sheehan would make an excellent Joker, who is Klaus from the Umbrella Academy. Yeah. Pretty good, right? That's some Ledger-esque.
Starting point is 01:39:42 I like it too, yeah. Okay. Do you think he's been overexposed to comic book stuff, though? Because he was in Misfits, and he was in this, and of course he was in Mortal Engines, the movie where the cities drive around for a bit. One of them's London, isn't it? One of them's London, isn't it?
Starting point is 01:39:56 They want to knock down the wall. They want to knock down the wall with a big laser gun thing. God, that was... They made that, didn't they? I know, I still liked it. Yeah, you're wrong. You're wrong. No, you're not wrong.
Starting point is 01:40:05 You're just ill-informed. I'm ill-informed, that's true. No, it wasn't the worst movie I saw liked it yeah you're wrong no you're not wrong you're just ill informed I'm ill informed that's true nah it wasn't the worst movie I saw I think Robert Sheen would be good I don't know if he would do it
Starting point is 01:40:11 I think he'd do it probably would do it I think he's also the right amount of anonymity but clout behind it yes
Starting point is 01:40:18 like you know people know him but he's not a huge name that's true I think you could even slot him into the pre-existing Jared Leto version where he's kind of the weird mob boss guy yeah right and he's not a huge name. That's true. I think you could even slot him into the pre-existing Jared Leto version
Starting point is 01:40:25 where he's kind of the weird mob boss guy. Yeah, right. And he's kind of got that elasticity that I kind of associate with the Joker. Like he's not stronger than Batman, but he's faster and springier and unpredictable. Yeah, exactly. Batman's hardly springy at all. Second email.
Starting point is 01:40:42 This is from Ryan. Okay, Ryan. Since we're talking about this is an origin movie week, I was wondering if you had any particular favourite character introductions in film, TV, comics, etc. Wow. For him personally, nothing tops Matt Berry's first appearance in The It Crowd. Where he shows up at the funeral of his dad and he's like,
Starting point is 01:40:59 Father! Yeah. That's a pretty good one. That is a really good one. Good origins. This isn't an origin but i like the bruce willis reveal in die hard 3 they pick him up and he's hung over he's like i don't know what's happening and that's an introduction that's i'm willing to take that
Starting point is 01:41:13 okay that's pretty good all right uh boy okay i like the introduction of die hard 5 where he probably just gets off a plane in russia or whatever well time to die hard again it's me bruce willis i mean yeah Jonathan fucking whatever yeah right that's CPI yeah alright what's it what's it bloody good
Starting point is 01:41:30 we can do this James we can do it we'll edit for clarity and time what about the Daniel Craig reveal in the original Bond where he's like
Starting point is 01:41:38 I'm pretty strong and I'm fighting in a toilet not original Bond that actually is great that's a really good one tells you everything you need to know about the character
Starting point is 01:41:44 yep we get it's we tell you it tells you everything you know about the character including the fact that he's willing to shoot a family man in the head because that was his job yes it segues into the gun barrel bond uh sequence man that's good what about i'm batman uh michael keaton oh you're pushing all my buttons I'm pushing all your buttons all the bloody buttons yeah what's the best what's the best MCU origin first appearance I
Starting point is 01:42:10 I guess it's not it's halfway through the movie but I love the Iron Man flying to the village kill everybody that's pretty good it's not really an origin of the character
Starting point is 01:42:18 because he's it's halfway through the movie I'm okay with that but that's the origin of the character and it's in his final form I guess I I think.
Starting point is 01:42:26 So that I quite liked. Indiana Jones Raiders is a really good... That's a great one, yeah, yeah, for sure. Because again, it tells you everything you need to know. He's doing a dumb thing for no reason other than that thing belongs in a museum. But to be honest, it really belongs with the native peoples. Yes, he stole it from.
Starting point is 01:42:42 He stole it from. What about Yoda? Nah. really belongs with the native peoples that he stole it from he stole it from what about yoda nah all as as a as a reveal that he's not the the amazing uh super powerful jedi man that yes we imagine that's that's cool he's a good mcu one peter quill i think that intro gets you on board i mean it borrows from a bunch of stuff but it gets you on board with the movie i think it's like it's fun and he's he's he knows what he's doing and he's an explorer and he's kind of a bad bloke and he's crafty and he's got jet boots yeah right i don't know i always like i always like a good revelation of like a when the villain arrives like and it's it's usually some sort of mysterious man in black gets off a train or whatever and just like yeah you see their snakeskin boots and you're like and you're like
Starting point is 01:43:24 oh this guy's going to be trouble. What about that Nazi dude from Inglourious Bastards then? Yeah, okay, that's pretty good. He's like, let's drink milk and talk English or whatever. Yeah, that's excellent actually. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, good stuff. What's the introduction of all the characters in Mortal Engines?
Starting point is 01:43:38 Got enough cities for you? They're like... Let's go. I can't believe this city's on the move. You know? Oh, yeah. Hope you got your ticket. What about this one?
Starting point is 01:43:50 Yes. I've got Google open. I figured. Willy Wonka. He does the spin. He does the fall. You don't know what's what with that guy. I would have loved it if he fell down and he didn't get up.
Starting point is 01:44:01 And then he just collapses on the ground, and then all the families are's just he collapses on the ground and then all the families are like should we go in or you can't it's locked should we check his body for a key you just see the rug being pulled back and he's on the rug
Starting point is 01:44:15 and they're just dragging it back into the that's great into the factory yeah is that all of them though there's gotta be I don't know
Starting point is 01:44:22 what about Aragon in Lord of the Rings this one isn't from here he's smoking a pipe in the corner of the room and you're like, who's this mysterious fella? Who's this son of a bitch? Yeah, that's what they say. I've thought of all of them. You've thought of every single origin that there is. What about Spider-Man in Civil War where he flips in?
Starting point is 01:44:38 That's pretty good. That's pretty good. That's what you need. That's the key. First impressions last, you know? They do. So you've got to get in. If you're going to get in there, if you're a cosplayer
Starting point is 01:44:48 and you want to cosplay, you know, break out as Spider-Man, just go to a convention and steal a Captain America shield without asking. That's a pretty good idea. Yeah? What about Darth Vader for Star Wars? You're like a villain coming through a thing. I do, that's true. You're wearing black snakeskin boots.
Starting point is 01:45:02 I do, yeah. The space equivalent of snakeskin boots. That's very cool. That one wasn't Googled either, just so you know. It's off the top of the dome, yeah. It's on my own. Anyway, it's way easier, I think,
Starting point is 01:45:13 for a villain to make a grand entrance. Okay. Because they can come in and shoot somebody. Exactly, yeah. Oh, I'm not feeling it. Well, the Heath Ledger Joker coming into the party is good. It's not his introduction.
Starting point is 01:45:24 No, yeah, yeah. But I guess also his introduction in that movie is also very good it's also very good he's wearing snake skin shoes probably is yeah i mean and that that origin also that that origin reveals his intense skill for planning or rolling with everything where he's like every member of that crew was paid to kill every other member of the crew. Yep. And then he just knocks off the last guy and he's like, well, perfect. The perfect crime in many ways. The perfect crime I've done.
Starting point is 01:45:51 Good stuff. I think that's the show though. Yeah, that is the show. And I will accept your resignation. Good. Here it is in triplicate. One for you, one for your scroll of a wife and one for myself. Yes.
