Great week for everyone. We're all having a terrific week. Everybody would have heard the news by now. We may as well jump straight into it. The death of Chadwick Boseman at the age of 43. I've got the family statement here, if you don't mind me. I'll read that out. They put out on his official social media accounts.

It is with immeasurable grief that we confirm the passing of Chadwick Boseman. Chadwick was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer in 2016 and battled with it these last four years as it progressed to stage 4. A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it and brought you many of the films you have come to love so much. From Marshall to Defy Bloods, August Wilson's Ma Rainey's Black Bottom and several more all were filmed during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy. It was the honour of his career to bring King T'Challa to life in Black Panther.

He died in his home with his wife and his family by his side. The family thanks you for your love and prayers and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time. So, yeah, this obviously came out of the blue for... Yeah, that's mind-boggling. So I guess just his family knew? I don't know. I mean, presumably some of the

people he worked with must yeah i guess so yeah it made me because i was re-watching some some of the stuff they'd done including the portal scene from endgame and he's the first one through yeah right and i wonder if they i don't know it could be just to be a coincidence but it just it's amazing to me that all of these movies came out during this time period like black panther i thought when did that come out like 2016 2016? It came out in 2018. Yeah. Which means he was sick when he filmed. Yeah, like, I mean, you know, I can only speak for myself,

but I was not familiar with his work at all. I've since gone back and watched Get On Up, his James Brown biopic. Have you seen Defy Bloods? No, I haven't. That's on Netflix. That's on Netflix, yeah. But yeah, like prior to Black Panther,

I was not aware of any of his work. But just to know that the entire time I've seen his work on screen, not only did he have to go through the incredibly rigorous like physical transformations for that everybody who pretty much who makes a Marvel movie has to do, like you'd have to bulk up for Black Panther, just even like a very brief appearance and for the solo movie but then like you know change physically for a different move like a non-mcu movie yeah he would do you know while battling cancer and also he would have

to go through like the the exhausting marketing you know press junkets and things like that visiting kids he visited kids with cancer while he himself had cancer. Yeah. Crazy. Yeah, because you've sort of got to, while you are part of the MCU stable, you kind of have to stay in character to a certain degree. You kind of have to, like, do all this extra stuff. Yeah, you're not just Black Panther in the movie.

It's like with any of these people. Like, you're out in the street and people are like, kids expect, they're like, oh my God, that's like you're walking around. You can't be like, get out of here, kid. I'm not Black Panther, I hate that or whatever. Yeah, because you'd see him, people come up in the street and do the Black Panther salute to him

and he'd do it. I saw an interview he was talking about and they were like, oh, do you hate doing it? And he's like, I don't hate doing it. I hate it when people are like, hey, do the thing. But if they do it to me like i'll do it back you know what i mean yeah for sure yeah yeah that's yeah i just i mean yeah and it is you know there is so much about him and like his public appearances where in retrospect it's all in a completely

different light like i know there were a lot of right you know there are a few you know post black panther uh you know there were you know some memes of like oh you know look at him he's sick of doing the again the salute or whatever. And it's like, no, he was literally dying. Yeah. When he'd like that, you, you, you caught, you captured a frame where he looked sad while he was doing that. Yeah.

Cause you know. Exactly. Yeah. Cause he's out doing a press junket. Yeah, exactly. Between chemotherapy or whatever else. Yeah. Yeah.

It's, it's, it's, I just, I, I thought it was wrong. Like when it happened, I'm like, this isn't like, this is someone's been hacked. This is like, even after I tweeted it, I spent like 10, 20 minutes just searching, being like, have I just tweeted out something that's not true? Like, have I just been duped by this? It just didn't seem, it doesn't, it didn't. And I think it was, it's definitely like the shock of it, just like the suddenness of it and like power to him to, to not reveal that you don't have to and well exactly yeah that's that's you know and and as

we say you know you don't want people being like how's the cancer going yeah we hope you know people respect the privacy of his family at this you know at this point because obviously they want that but yeah and also i guess there would be a certain stigma attached to that and people being well you know if you'd let it known to the public then people may not have wanted to cast him in certain roles yeah or they may have been like well he's not believable as this hero because of you know yeah he's he's people would see him as frail even though if he wasn't that's right so it feels like just looking at the roles that he's done that like he was like cementing this legacy doing as much as he could because he i guess he knew i mean we don't know how far in that he knew that he was you know yeah

that's true yeah through yeah yeah that he was going to pull through. It's like David Bowie who released one last album, and he's like, well, I'm going to die this year, so I'd better put this out while I can. That's it. Speaking of, though, because he does have two things in the pipeline, which we will see. He was doing T'Challa as a voice in What If?

Yeah, so there's the Rainy's Black Bottom, which when I read that, I'm like, I don't know what that is. So it's upcoming. Right. Yeah, the Marvel What If series, he voices T'Challa, but it's T'Challa who becomes Star-Lord. Yeah. So that will be his final performance.

I know a lot of people kind of want us to talk about the speculation about like what's next for Black Panther 2? What's Marvel got in – what are they up – And that's for another time, exactly, yeah, and I think it's probably, yeah, best to,

again, if you haven't seen, I'm definitely going to go back. I enjoyed Get On Up, but yeah, there's a bunch of stuff and he's portrayed a lot of iconic sort of African-American characters

and yeah, like T'Challa was, you know, you can say, oh, well, it's just this silly kind of superhero character,

but you know, there's so many – it's just the idea of black and non-black kids can be like, well, here's a superhero and he's African-American – well, he's not African-American, he's African. Yeah. And that's – you can be that. There was – because one of my son's best mates is from Africa and obviously his favourite, not obviously,

but his favourite superhero is Black Panther. It's important that people see themselves represented. Do you know what I mean? Instead of you've got somebody that could inspire you, that you can look up to. Obviously it's fictional. But I don't think people, some people, I think people downplay how important that is.

Like people still, the way that, youplay how important that is yeah like people still the way that you know you look at the way people still talk about like chris reeve for example yeah right i think like this is that kind of yeah kind of legacy you know what i mean it's he's he was in three of the biggest movies ever made that's true i mean like and i think that what's what's great about that is his legacy it's going to endure like we'll be long dead and he'll be remembered you know what i mean? Which I think is... That's the correct way. Yeah, that's absolutely the correct way to go.

That's the way to look at it, yeah. Yeah, I think so too. But no, I think his impact is, it's important because I know also people were like, well, what about Blade? Blade was this black superhero. That was fucking 20 years ago. Yeah, we need more than one every 20 years.

Yeah, right? You know what I mean? Yeah. It was hugely impactful. And he also, the way he spoke about other people who helped him, I know he talks, there's a speech that I watch where he talks about how Denzel Washington paid for tuition for some,

for some of his college. Cause he went to Howard university and there was like a acting scholarship for Oxford and he couldn't afford it. And some of his fellow classmates couldn't afford it. So Denzel Washington stumped up, which is great. And he talked about how, like what he's built is on the back of others. know what i mean so he wasn't just like i made it

to the top and i'm the king you know right he was well aware of kind of the people who came before him and the people who who will come after yeah and i think we are only going to get good things like from this i think we are going to get a new generation coming i'm not even like it's already here you're already seeing it you know what i mean i think it's it's it's such a huge difference yeah you know um it's one of those things as well and claire constantly reminds me of this because she's like james you're such a prick and i'm like i know but it's one of these things where like you never you never really know what people are going through exactly that's right i mean big or small they might just be having a bad day or somebody died

or they're sick yeah you don't you just you don know. Like one of my biggest pet peeves is when like, you know, somebody's looking sad and somebody will come up to me and go, bloody, you never know what might never happen. And it's like, maybe it did happen. Maybe it's happening. Maybe shut up. Yeah, exactly.

It's one of those things where Patton Oswalt talks about like the world is chaos, be kind. I've probably butchered that saying, but it's true. Yeah. And I think I need to remember that, I think, more than a lot of people. But, yeah, this is, I don't know, this one kind of threw me, like, I don't know him. What do I know?

Well, exactly, yeah, yeah. But I also, like, my son loves Black Panther as well. You know what I mean? It's seeing, I didn't tell him because he doesn't know the difference at this point, but he will, You know what I mean? But I mean, you know, if everybody, you know, if people reflect on that and they move forward with a positive, you know, imagine millions of people around the world just moving forward with like a positive, just a positive focus based around this that's a good thing yeah i think the idea of like again don't don't you know if we all went out there and we're like okay well let's not you know remember people have their own kind of private struggles and and and you know just kind of exist in the world knowing that like that's a positive thing i think so that's you know okay that's something but also it's big like a big thing. That's right. So that's, you know, that's something.

But big. Like, a big thing. A real big thing. Like, they're like, the Great Barrier Reef is fine. You know what I mean? It reversed itself or whatever. Yeah, that would be cool too. Yeah.

If you haven't seen, obviously, you know, when this happens, there's a whole bunch of snippets of little things that people did. Sure, yeah. We've all seen the movies, the big MCU movies and stuff he's been in. If you haven't seen some of his earlier stuff, maybe check that out. Stuff that has probably been circulating on Twitter and stuff this week, his appearance on SNL, the Black Jeopardy sketch is very funny. I saw celebrities read mean tweets that he did. Oh, that's right.

Oh, I did see this. They asked people if they had some positive stuff to say about Black Panther and what seeing a black superhero on screen meant to them if you want to come in and record it.

But Chadwick Boseman was behind the curtain while they were doing that. He would jump out and say hi. Boo! He'd say boo! He'd say boo! Yeah, that was really fun. I really liked that.

Yeah, so. But yeah, awful. Awful. Awful. Yeah. But amazing legacy. That's right. And maybe some good will come out of this,

And also Bill and Ted's 3, which we've probably both watched. I watched it. Both of us have watched it. We've both watched it. So according to these numbers, DC Fandom. Oh, there's Mulan news as well. I don't know if you mentioned that. What's the Mulan news?

Mulan's going to be free in November, I think. That's pretty soon. Or December. It's one of those. If you have a Disney Plus subscription and you don't want to pay what it turns out to be in Australia, $35 for Milan. That's a lot of money. Video on demand. James, are we comic book influencers? Well, we didn't live stream it, so I don't know if that counts towards that. No, nor are we influencers.

So, and the trailers themselves have pulled in uh this is right this is wednesday these numbers are from uh 150 million views it's not nothing big event big event big success big big weird red and black uh out of space where were they where were they red and black out of Space is where they were. Yeah. But, I mean, on the one hand, there is a pandemic going on. Yeah, but she said she did go for a bunch of auditions at the start of the year. I think she'll be fine. She's a good enough actor outside of Star Wars. Yeah, that's true. That she'll be all right. I hope, anyway.

Yeah. I think it's also like that Star Wars curs thing is not really a thing anymore, I feel. So do you feel like, because I didn't read the article, but I did read the headline. Yeah. Is it a typecasting thing? Because she seems very charming in interviews and things like that. Surely it wouldn't be like they're in the room and they're like, well, I just don't like you kind of thing. Surely that wouldn't be the case.

But he's a real good-natured, nice man. I love that moment where they get sent to hell and he's trying to have a moment with them and explain who he is.

Because they don't often get frustrated or fed up or snap, but they're just like, great, we've got like 20 minutes. Can you just hold up on this shit? But also the idea that they're so, Bill and Ted are just so roll with it in their attitude that they're like, I guess we've got to go back to hell because they've been to hell before. And they're like, okay, well, now we're in hell. Let's figure out a way to get out of hell with our daughters.

But it's a fantastic season opening and there's hints of this world of Lovecraft and it's a cross-country story and it's racism in America in the 60s and it's music and it's cast, like, really well. And it's got – who played Black Canary in Birds of Prey?

Oh. Jurnee Smollett? Yeah, Julie Smollett-Bell. Yeah, and she's great in it as well. And then the second episode is like a season's worth of exposition and crazy Lovecraft stuff in one episode. And it's a bit much. Like it's a bit like this is a lot but it's still super compelling and weird.

Interesting. But the lore isn't really fleshed out, but it does then set up the rest of the season. The first one in particular was great. If the first episode wasn't so great, I'd be like, oh, the second one was also good, but the first episode was so good. Intriguing.

And it's all the lore of the Lovecraft universe. Okay, so I guess my question is, without spoiling too much, if you can, is this a world that explores sort of real life issues through the lens of a fictional Lovecraft thing, or is Lovecraft real? Lovecraft is real in this universe.

So all the Cthulhu mythos is real. Yeah, but it's not like, yeah, exactly. Yeah, so it's kind of, yeah, the second episode you really just like, it felt like I'd missed an episode. Do people think in this universe the Cthulhu mythos is fictional? I don't believe so, no. Okay, right, right, right.

Do people know about it? Is the world at large aware of this sort of stuff or no? I don't think so. I mean people know of Lovecraft but beyond that not really. They know of H.P. Lovecraft? Yes. Huh. So they think they wrote.

My family are East African Indians and proudly so. The impact the movie Black Panther had on my life was monumental. I'm not the first to say it and I certainly won't be the last, but this film moved me in a way that other films seldom have. It was the first time in my lifetime that I'd seen Africa portrayed in a positive way, not as a war-torn backwards continent painted with a brush that doesn't deserve,

but in fact as a wonderful and beautiful place to live from the costumes to the music to the language. I agree, great costumes. That's very true.
