Welcome back, everybody, to the Weekly Planet, where we talk movies and comics and TV shows. My name is Jay, also known as Mr. Sunday.
Starting point is 00:01:13 And with me as always, it's Nick Mason. Hello everyone out there in podcast land. That's right. It's great to be. It's a wonderful night out there. Is it? Or morning. Is it?
Starting point is 00:01:20 Yep. I don't know about that. I think you're jumping to conclusions, Mason. It's a wonderful or terrible night out there. Or morning. For you. Or not. Or it? Yep. I don't know about that. I think you're jumping to conclusions, Mason. It's a wonderful or terrible night out there. Or morning for you. Or not, or it's fine. Hello. Podcasting.
Starting point is 00:01:33 Isn't it just? Yeah. See, it's more complicated than back in the day. We would have crushed it as like 1930s radio presenters. Oh, my God. We'd be like, good evening out there. And everybody would be like, it is evening. And here's the news. A man fell into a potted plant today.
Starting point is 00:01:49 You know, it's all this local news. He was mystified. I remember when I lived in Ballarat for a little bit, there was a- Regional town. Regional town. Not really. Well, yeah, it is.
Starting point is 00:02:04 A slightly bigger regional town. There was a local station. The radio duo was Rock and Roll. Yeah, hell yeah. And they had a segment. I can't remember what it was called. It was something like Trash and Treasure where you'd ring up. Community Notice Board.
Starting point is 00:02:18 Yeah, you'd be like, oh, I've got a broken scooter, but I need a new washing machine. Does anybody? And I'm like, how the fuck is it? So they were getting rid of the broken scooter and they wanted to have a washing machine. Does anybody? And I'm like, how the fuck is it? So they were getting rid of the broken scooter and they wanted to have a washing machine. Yeah, you'd swap something. Yeah, I know.
Starting point is 00:02:29 Buy, swap and sell. I know what that is. I'm like, how is this radio? What is happening? It's Blast FM where every day is a blast. That's right, yeah. From Martin Malloy. Yeah, anyways.
Starting point is 00:02:39 Anyway, but I'm talking even more old school than that, I'd be like. Yeah, before that. Batman was mystified. Before you could swap a radiator for an old horse. That's right. Yesterday a gentleman saw a curious cat. That's the news. I'd love to see a curious cat.
Starting point is 00:02:56 Was that a portent of a witch perhaps? Certainly. Yes, definitively. The man's been arrested for courting a witch. Speaking of witches and ghouls and spooky stuff. Oh, yes. The big movie of the week. It's not big.
Starting point is 00:03:09 It's not doing that well. Haunted Mansion? No, that was two weeks ago. And that's gone forever. It also might not be out here yet. I don't know. Who knows? It's out in America, which is fascinating because people will see anything,
Starting point is 00:03:22 any spooky movie at Halloween time. So why would you release it now? As a summer blockbuster. Yeah. Absolutely why. Crazy. But no, we're going to be talking about Dracula on a Boat. Oh, yeah, that's right.
Starting point is 00:03:33 It's different. When I saw it in the movies, I'm like, have they changed the title? Yes. So here it is. Yeah. In the US, it's called Last Voyage of the Demeter. Yeah. In Australia and other select territories, it's called Dracula colon Voyage of the Demeter in Australia and other select territories. It's called Dracula colon Voyage of the Demeter.
Starting point is 00:03:47 So clearly they've gone, we'd better chuck Dracula in there to spice it up a little bit. But let's take out that it's the last voyage of the Demeter because we don't want to spoil the ending of a movie where Dracula shows up and kills everyone in a boat. Maybe it isn't the last voyage of the Demeter. Maybe they've become a wonderful a boat. Maybe it isn't the last voyage of the Demeter. Maybe they become a wonderful tourist attraction. Maybe it does.
Starting point is 00:04:08 They'll take it out into the bloody bay and people can recreate it. Oh, my goodness. People will cosplay and they'll be like, oh, it's Dracula. I would love that. Like a student actor will be like, I'm Dracula. Look at my things. Is that an iPad? From that show, mate.
Starting point is 00:04:31 We'll talk about that later. So why didn't they change it in the US though? Because I feel like it's not doing super well. I think that's a lot to do with the name. Does anyone know what the Demeter is? I don't think so. Yeah. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:04:43 I know it was a lot of eating pizza by Demeter. You're not wrong. No. That's how you get it sometimes. You unroll it? Yeah. From like a spool? I guess.
Starting point is 00:04:51 Sure. Yeah. Yeah. Cool. Cool. James, why don't you list what's happening in the show? Should I do that now? I think you should do that.
Starting point is 00:04:56 Okay. Well, look, there's time codes below. Collings takes care of that. Don't even stress about it. You'll get stressed. He'll have to stress about it. I've never seen the time codes. You've never?
Starting point is 00:05:03 Never. Maybe they're not even there. That's what I'm saying. They are. He'll have to stress about it. I've never seen the time codes. You've never? Never. Maybe they're not even there. That's what I'm saying. They are. I've checked. Okay, great. We're going to talk about some more strike stuff, including VFX. Including VFX.
Starting point is 00:05:14 Yeah, that's right. That's how we say it in Australia. And one movie that's moving forward. Which you're going to be excited for. Wait, in a good way or a bad way? In a good way. Your voice said good way, but your face said bad way. I think you've won. It's a good way, Mason. Oh, in a good way or a bad way? In a good way. Your voice said good way, but your face said bad way. I think you've won. It's a good way,
Starting point is 00:05:28 Mason. We're going to talk about what's going on with that third Wonder Woman movie. What's going on with the Suicide Squad. Sorry, Suicide Squad. The 2016 version. That's still going, isn't it? We might be seeing something from that. Great. How Blue Beetle is looking? Bad?
Starting point is 00:05:44 Not as bad as we thought, maybe, but still bad for now. I'm talking not critically. It looks pretty good. Oh, well, we've got some critic reactions. We'll get into that. But it's coming out soon for people who don't know. Yes, it is. And you wouldn't know because no one knows.
Starting point is 00:05:55 When is that coming out? Soon. It might be like in a couple of weeks in America at least. 14th of September. Okay, ages. Never mind. Yeah, that's fine. That's a month.
Starting point is 00:06:03 That's ages. That's plenty of time to build a billion-dollar campaign. Easy. To really make it one of the biggest grossing movies of all time. Easy. Easy. Easy done. HBO have a new series, which might be of interest to those who love the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Starting point is 00:06:17 Oh, haters. Oh, mate. Polarizing. I know. Trailers ahoy for a couple of things. A couple of big things, maybe. Aarizing. I know. Trailers ahoy for a couple of things, a couple of big things maybe. A couple of big things. Have superhero movies ruined comedies?
Starting point is 00:06:30 That's a discussion this week that you might have seen. Have superhero movies ruined comedies? Have they ruined comedies? As in have they pushed aside comedies in the theatre space? I see. Right. Scrapped Nova series. I thought for a minute you meant they're like,
Starting point is 00:06:45 have superhero movies become so funny that there's no point. There's no point going to a comedy because if you go to a superhero movie, you get quips and you get blue lasers and sometimes red lasers. But in a comedy, what do you get? At best you get jokes and Jennifer Lawrence completely nude. I mean, who wants that? Have you seen that, Jennifer Lawrence? I haven't seen that yet.
Starting point is 00:07:04 Is it even out here? I think it was for a second, yeah. Get jokes and Jennifer Lawrence completely nude. I mean, you know. Have you seen that Jennifer Lawrence one? Is it even out here? I think it was for a second, yeah. I think it's maybe on streaming now. Comedies are back. And by back, I mean they've been doing worse than ever. They really have. Yeah. And then we're going to talk about Barbie,
Starting point is 00:07:16 the future of Barbie and Mattel in general. Space Barbie? Maybe, because they've got big plans. Let's start with this. This is by Vulture. 50 Marvel employees have actually banded together and voted to unionize VFX employees, that is, because obviously the working conditions,
Starting point is 00:07:34 and you would have seen that reflected in some of the TV shows and movies that you watch, that they are just getting absolutely crunched. We've talked about it before, just the working conditions and being made to do like 50 variations on a laser and then yeah yeah you know only to go back and change it at the last minute again anyway it's it's that if if anybody's ever if i bet we have a lot of people who work as graphic designers sure and probably also in vfx yep but you know the whole thing about graphic design is somebody wants a logo and they just you and they get presented with a logo and they go,
Starting point is 00:08:05 can you make it better? Just better? How? Just better. More like Pops. Yeah, if you make Pops and better and I go, ooh, good logo. And then they do a million variations and they go back to the first one. Yeah, it's the same.
Starting point is 00:08:17 We've talked about that. It's the same with Marvel where they go. Yeah. If they had three months of post-production to get a laser looking really good and if they had a chance to do that from the word go, it would look incredible. But Marvel keeps demanding different versions. That's right.
Starting point is 00:08:33 And it's not just Marvel. And it's not just lasers. It's mostly lasers. Yeah. It's mostly variations. And it's mostly Marvel. Yeah. No, it is.
Starting point is 00:08:40 It is mostly Marvel, yeah, because also they suck up all the time from all the VFX production houses as well. Yeah, yeah, yeah. They get like everybody's overworked and underpaid and people aren't being credited properly or at all. It's this whole nightmare. But anyway, so one of the comments that came out of it from VFX coordinator Bella Huffman who says,
Starting point is 00:09:00 turnaround times don't apply to us, protected hours don't apply to us, and pay equity doesn't apply to us. Well, I think they should. That's right. I think this is also something that when this was announced, it seems like everybody was like, yeah, good, they should get paid more, whereas for actors and writers, they're like, well, I don't even like TV and don't they all live in mansions and who cares?
Starting point is 00:09:19 But which isn't true. We've talked about it. VFX artists, can't they just draw a mansion and pretend they live in it? Can't they just do that? Can't they just stand in front of a grid screen and then composite that into a computer and then put a mansion behind them in the grid screen? I think they probably could.
Starting point is 00:09:33 No, they wouldn't be allowed on set. Yeah, you're right. So there you go. So that's great. That's early days. We'll keep an eye on that. But it seems like word of people wanting. There's a momentum here. Yeah. Yeah. And hopefully it seems that like word of, you know, people wanting, there's a momentum here.
Starting point is 00:09:46 Yeah. Yeah. And hopefully once again, like I think, you know, the WGA, the Writers Guild Strike, I think, you know, it had a lot of momentum behind it. But then when the actors jumped on as well, it sort of felt like it was the actors were supporting. Yes.
Starting point is 00:10:01 You know, it was like everybody's working together. So hopefully. Even Stephen Amell, he's on the picket line. He's on the picket line. We've seen a photo of him on the picket line. They made him do it. Do it, yeah. At gunpoint. Did you know it was like everybody's working together so hopefully even steven amell he's on the picket line he's on the picket line we've seen a photo of him on the picket line they made him do it do it at gunpoint did you know that no yeah it's true wow good on him he's out there yeah i think he said some things that like i don't know in the heat of the moment you know he made a show that he wanted people to see and that is absolutely frustrating but yeah no it's good to see him behind it.
Starting point is 00:10:26 Let's talk some more delays, though, Mason. Aw. The How to Train Your Dragon remake is being delayed. Is that live action? Yes. Okay. Aw. But this is why I screen daily.
Starting point is 00:10:36 You're going to love this. We've got a button that just goes, aw. Aw. What do any of those do? I wish we'd label them. Oh, that's not bad. Okay. I like that one. Okay, green.
Starting point is 00:10:48 That's basically the audio equivalent. That's the Sting version of rawr. So it's good to know. Okay, green is that one. All right. We could test these during the show. I think so, yeah. Okay, cool.
Starting point is 00:10:59 You can also program them. No, I like the stock ones. Yeah. Because what if we put fresh new ones on there and then one day we need sad, weak trombone? Yeah, you're exactly right. Then how do we get it back? We can't. We're going to have to get a trombone. We have to call Rode Tech
Starting point is 00:11:11 support and be like, can you re-download with sad trombone? I think this thing is like, every now and then it's like, you should update. I'm like, nah, I'm not plugging this into anything. Update yourself. That's your problem. But here's something that's moving forward by Screen Daily. Okay.
Starting point is 00:11:26 Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will begin shooting in September. You might be asking, how? How's that going to happen? Because the strike's probably still going to be on. We will still be going. How are they doing that, Jack? How many people do you see in those movies? Live action real people.
Starting point is 00:11:42 James Marston. Yep. But there's a lot of. Little animated men. Yeah, filming a field. Oh, sure, yeah. James Marsden. Yep. But there's a lot of. Little animated men. Yeah, filming a field. Oh, sure, yeah. Or a car. That's true.
Starting point is 00:11:50 Oh, yeah, that's true, yeah. Just little animated abominations that they can put in later. That's right. Okay, so it's essentially field photography. Basically, yeah. They're just going to go, okay, this one's set on a farm. This one's set on an abandoned farm. You can run around there.
Starting point is 00:12:06 I don't know. Yeah. So I think this one also doesn't have Jim Carrey in it. I think he's not coming back from memory. I like these for kids' movies. Okay, I didn't see the second one. And why not shoot an empty field? Why not shoot an empty field?
Starting point is 00:12:19 Sure. There you go. Save a bit of time later. That's right. Add the characters and plot later. Yeah, but here's some things that might be delayed. Oh, no, friends. Friendship's important.
Starting point is 00:12:29 Friendship is important. Oh, my God, he's running faster than ever before. He's running so fast that Dr. Robotnik's not even in this series anymore. I'm going to be in a parallel dimension or something. I don't know. Yeah, that did happen at one point. So there was a Disney earnings call this week. Bob Iger was on it.
Starting point is 00:12:46 Wait, who's the villain if it's not Dr. Robotnik? Bob Iger, I guess. Shadow the Hedgehog. Did you watch Sonic 2? No. At the end, they open a government facility and it's Shadow the Hedgehog. And if you don't remember, Shadow.
Starting point is 00:12:57 He's got a gun. He's got a gun. Yeah, that's all I know about Shadow the Hedgehog. You might even have two guns. Whoa. In a kid's film? Yeah. Wow.
Starting point is 00:13:05 Pretty cool. He'll have one gun and like allowing one F-bomb, in one scene he'll be allowed to have two guns. Perfect. Yeah. So Disney earning calls. You'll shoot a kid. In the head?
Starting point is 00:13:17 Yeah. Great. Disney earning calls. Okay, sure. Bob Iger was on it and he was just letting everybody know that it's fine. I think I saw some, I heard about some of this, yeah. He said the performance of some of our recent films have definitely been disappointing and we don't take that lightly.
Starting point is 00:13:31 He did talk about how Avatar did well, Guardians did well, but then like Ant-Man didn't do well. Did you remember the Haunted Mansion, if it's out, if he knows it's out. Was it out? I think it's out. I think it is out, yeah. It's got a lot of product placement in it apparently. Great.
Starting point is 00:13:44 I read there's a lot of product placement in it apparently. Great. I read there's a lot of product placement and a lot of ADR product placement. Apparently, look, spoilers for a movie I haven't seen, but apparently Lakeith's – That ghost is eating SpaghettiOs. Well, apparently Lakeith Stanfield's character's wife died and they added prior to the events of the film. That's why he's here. And there's a line in there that they've added in ADR where it essentially says
Starting point is 00:14:10 she died in a car accident while going to Baskin-Robbins for ice cream. And there's just a bunch of insane product placement in there, like a lot of, you know. So I don't know. I'm not going to watch it. No, that sounds incredible watch the i'll watch the clip what's that clip yeah he said he went on to say as you'd
Starting point is 00:14:30 expect we're very focused on improving the quality and the performance of the films that we've got coming up it's something that i'm working closely with the studio one i'm personally committed to spending more time and attention on that as well so basically saying that like Marvel's spiraling. It's spiraling hard. We've done too many things at once. They also mentioned some upcoming theatrical releases. They mentioned like Marvel, the Marvels. But what they didn't mention. Did they say it like that?
Starting point is 00:14:56 Yeah. Okay, we're coming up. We've got Marvel the Marvels? I was just saying the Marvels, you're fired. Marvel Cinematic Universe? That's coming up. The Smarvels. But it didn't include Deadpool 3 and Echo. Echo was rumored to already be in trouble.
Starting point is 00:15:13 We might have talked about it a few months ago. This is before. Surely this doesn't mean that they've canceled Deadpool 3. No, it just means that. He forgot. He forgot. No, no, I think it's pushed. Oh, okay, right.
Starting point is 00:15:23 Finished. Or it could be pushed, I should say. I don't know anything. That's right. There you go. Finally admits it. These don't look like they're stopping anytime soon. So this is just going to be this for a while, which is exciting.
Starting point is 00:15:36 Don't worry. We can all watch Red Notice and Gal Gadot's new movie. Heart of Stone. Heart of Stone. Where she plays Jennifer Hart and she's looking for a stone or something. Or her name's Stone and she's looking for a heart. That's great. It is good, isn't it?
Starting point is 00:15:47 I've heard. Not good. Well, you're wrong. You've heard from a stupid man, a stupid wrong man. Your dad? Yes. He called me. We had a 40-minute conversation about it.
Starting point is 00:15:59 About the movie Heart of Stone. Yes. Wow. Yeah. It's great, actually. All right. Well, that's fine. It's good that he thinks that, that you think that of your dad. Yep. Have you watched Heart of Stone? No. Wow. Yeah. It's great, actually. All right. Well, that's fine. It's good that he thinks that, that you think that of your dad.
Starting point is 00:16:06 Yep. Have you watched Heart of Stone? No. But it's good. There's no way it's good. But you just said it was good. You said if you thought it was bad, you're a stupid man. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:16 Yeah. I lost track. Apparently Gal Gadot is pretty good at it, though. Okay, great. That's what I've heard. So Gal Gadot, I should say. Anyway, speaking of, Variety Mason. Go on. Remember hearing like Third've heard. Gal Gadot, I should say. Anyway, speaking of, Variety Mason. Go on.
Starting point is 00:16:25 Remember hearing like Third Wonder Woman is happening, whatever. Gal Gadot was like, no, we've been in talks. It's happening. We're doing it. So Variety is saying that a Third Wonder Woman film isn't in development at this time and nothing was ever promised to Gadot regarding Wonder Woman
Starting point is 00:16:41 3 and there was no definitive discussion. Whoa. Thank you very much. Wow. Reboot? Oh, for sure, yeah. You act a reboot? Yes. Okay.
Starting point is 00:16:52 Bring Linda Carter back. Why not? Do you think there's a chance down the line that he's going to establish this Justice League and then we're going to cross over and we're going to see the old Justice League? Yes, I do think that. That's what they're doing when he's like, don't worry, we've got plans. In 10 years, I'm going to make Ben Affleck be Batman again.
Starting point is 00:17:09 That's right. You signed it and there's no way out. This is ironclad. I also wonder if maybe James Gunn, while doing his exit interviews for everybody, like, hey, Henry Cavill, you're fired. Hey, Ben Affleck, you're fired. Yeah. Hey, Gal Gadot, you're fired.
Starting point is 00:17:23 Hey, this is a performance appraisal. You're fired. You're all fired. But. You're on a performance action plan. You've failed. you're fired. Hey, Ben Affleck, you're fired. Yeah. Hey, Gal Gadot, you're fired. Hey, this is a performance appraisal. You're fired. You're all fired. But. You're on a performance action plan. You've failed. You're fired. I'm wondering if at the end of that he said something along the lines of,
Starting point is 00:17:32 but hey, you know, it's comic book universes and as usual. Yeah. There's always a chance you could come back in a thing and, you know, we'd love to have you back for a multiverse thing or a timeline. Ben Affleck's like, I don't want to come back. You have to. That's right. And I'm wondering if maybe Gal Gadot heardleck's like, I don't want to come back. You have to. That's right. And I'm wondering if maybe Gal Gadot heard that and was like,
Starting point is 00:17:48 oh, for Wonder Woman 3, okay. Yeah, cool. Yeah. Yeah, maybe. So I don't know. I think, you know, it's probably better just to clean reboot at all at this point. I mean, you're doing it anyway.
Starting point is 00:17:59 Did you see there was maybe some leaked concept art of the Superman suit this week? I didn't see that. Could have been AI generated or something. Terrific. Or fake or whatever. But it could be 100% genuine from the studio but also AI generated. I don't know, Mason.
Starting point is 00:18:12 I don't know anything. I'll never know anything and I'm going to die. What do you think of that? A rare moment of honesty from one Mr. Sunday movies. Here you go. Via comicbookmovie.com. Okay. So that's your David comicbookmovie.com. Okay.
Starting point is 00:18:28 So that's your David Coren sweat there. Yeah, it's kind of the, did you ever see the J.J. Abrams designs? The flyby suit. It's kind of a bit like that. It is a little bit like that. It also has the shoulder cape situation that TV Superman, Tyler Hoechlin, had. Remember in his early appearances when he was on Supergirl?
Starting point is 00:18:42 He had like an extra. Yes. And then they tweaked it a little bit. Also, this might be fake. It also might be fake. There's also a hawk girl slash woman there. There's a big fake, big face. I think it's Mr. Terrific.
Starting point is 00:18:52 Okay, I reckon that's fake. There's no, and he's not wearing the jocks. He's got a little red and gold belt. I feel James Gunn would want to give him the underpants. He hasn't talked about it. He said he's not sure. Not appropriate to discuss it. Yeah, it's not – he said he's not sure. Not appropriate to discuss it. Yeah, it's not.
Starting point is 00:19:07 He should wear the jocks. Put them on. Put them on. Just put them on. Just put them on, mate. And then they can have a discussion where he meets Henry Cavill in 10 years and he's like, nice jocks, and he's like, oh, shut up. I'm embarrassed.
Starting point is 00:19:20 This is embarrassing for me. Yeah, something like that. Yeah, a variation of that not even like big like big bloomers big red bloomers exactly
Starting point is 00:19:29 yeah a big pair of that catch the wind when he flies and they flap about a big pair of knickerbockers yes so again
Starting point is 00:19:36 might be fake or whatever but um yeah apparently also the VFX team have seen the script and they're like it's great
Starting point is 00:19:42 it might be about the Middle East like a conflict in the Middle East. So people are speculating that like, where's the other team in it? Justice Society? Yeah. Okay. Because remember they're going to put in like,
Starting point is 00:19:55 who are the other characters they were going to put in? The elite or whatever. Oh, sure. The authority. Yeah, the authority. That's right. And Superman and they go into some Middle Eastern conflict and Superman's like, stop it.
Starting point is 00:20:05 It's interesting. It's also interesting. I'm wondering what the- Who's that? Is that Superman? Superman. Don't do it. We're testing a new voice for him.
Starting point is 00:20:14 We've decided that one of the reasons that he hasn't really hit, you know, in the present day with the modern audiences, they don't like his traditional voice. So we're going with stop it. Stop doing it. I'll tell. Stop evildoers. Lex Luthor, get out of here.
Starting point is 00:20:29 Get out of here, mate. So what's interesting as well, I'm very curious to know what the authority lineup is because one of the members of the team originally was a character called Swift who was like a hawk woman kind of character, but now we've learned that there's going to be a Hawk girl in Justice League. So are they going to swap her out?
Starting point is 00:20:50 They're going to put Hawk girl on the authority. Yeah. They're just not going to have a Hawk type character on that team. Do you want a Hawk type character? I don't mind. Okay. Ethan Hawk? Ethan Hawk would be bad.
Starting point is 00:21:00 Great. I'm the actor Ethan Hawk. Stop it. I'm just doing my acting. No. Wrong. I don't be bad. Great. I'm the actor Ethan Hawke. Stop it. I'm just doing my acting. No. Wrong. I don't like it. I like this version.
Starting point is 00:21:11 You do like it. I don't know if I do, actually. All right. I'll have to see it on film. It's hard to say. It is. Yeah, that's true. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:21:18 It's hard to make an accurate assessment this far out. That's right. David Ayer's Suicide Squad 2016 is coming back or again. No, maybe. It's not, though. You don't know? It's not. You don't know anything.
Starting point is 00:21:31 It's true. I don't know. I know this, actually, honestly. If I know anything. I think we are going to see it. Okay. At some point. Great.
Starting point is 00:21:38 Eventually. He wrote this on Twitter. David Ayer. Yeah. All I know is that my answer. I mean, we don't have to say we know. Yes. We know it's David Ayer saying this.
Starting point is 00:21:46 It is. I'm sure he's been up to other stuff. Yeah, he has. All I know of him from the last six years is just him going, oh, maybe they'll release this. I think they will. Maybe. I'm excited for this.
Starting point is 00:21:58 Let me check. What is it? He has been doing others. I know he did Orc Cop. That was 2017. The Tax Collector. Did you see that? Another thing is probably.
Starting point is 00:22:07 Anyways. I do my very best to never say The Tax Collector if you know what I mean. This guy knows what he's doing. All I know is my unseen film plays much better than the studio release. The interest in my cut being shown seems real and organic. And Gun told me it would have its time to be shared. He's talking to a gun though.
Starting point is 00:22:22 A real gun. What do you think about this gun? It's coming out! Oh, that voice really for the gun as well? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Wow. Because then we always go, is this some sort of link there?
Starting point is 00:22:31 It's very intriguing. Oh, it is intriguing. He absolutely deserves to- Have faith in yourself, David Ayer! It's coming out, brother! Don't shoot me! Bye-bye! Okay.
Starting point is 00:22:42 He absolutely deserves to launch his DC universe without the drama about old projects. In a way, I'm chained to this thing. I'm riding a tiger here and navigating this situation the best I can. Life is a very strange journey. Get off me, David Ayer. Get off me. I'm a tiger. Oh, okay.
Starting point is 00:22:58 It was the gun again. No, it's a different guy. God. Yeah. I don't like this. I'm spitting mad. I'm spitting chips, David. Get off me, brother.
Starting point is 00:23:07 So what do you, first of all, we've talked about this. Do you want to see it? No. No? Is it going to be finished? Yeah, I assume so. Okay. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:23:15 I think it was pretty close to finished, wasn't it? I'm just tired of that. Yeah. That whole, I've seen it so many times, the original cut. I don't want to see it again. And we saw the extended cut also. Yeah. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:23:26 Really good. A lot of people don't like it. I think it's fine. Okay. I stand by that. Sure. I stand by it. So there you go.
Starting point is 00:23:34 Yeah, I don't think it's going to – I mean, if they can't make anything, they'll probably release it. Oh, I see what you're saying. Right. It's like they did with the Snyder Cut. They came out because we're all because they weren't making any movies. So they're like, what do we got? We got this four-hour movie.
Starting point is 00:23:49 Okay, I guess. All right. Anyway, this is my deadline. Blue Beetle. It's tracking higher than you initially anticipated, which is embarrassing for you. That is very embarrassing. It was going to have a $20 million opening and now it's $30 million,
Starting point is 00:24:00 which let me just specify is still bad. Seems bad, yeah. It has cost $120 million, which let me just specify is still bad. Seems bad, yeah. It has cost $120 million. That being said, first reactions have been very positive. Terrific. Someone even said something along the lines of, this is the best DC movie since The Dark Knight. That's amazing.
Starting point is 00:24:18 And that someone was? I can't remember. It was the best since the Nolan trilogy or whatever. That happens every time. It does. You want to be the guy who jumps in first. It just says that. Do you think you can only say it once, though? No. I mean, as long as you do it linearly.
Starting point is 00:24:36 Yeah. You know. What is the best DC movie since The Dark Knight? Oh, God. I'd have to think of some DC movies. The Suicide Squad? I quite like The Suicide Squad, yeah. Man of Steel? That's like a year later. That's not.
Starting point is 00:24:50 Oh, I guess it's not. It doesn't have to be better than The Dark Knight. It just has to be the best one since The Dark Knight. Yeah. Okay. Might be The Suicide Squad, yeah. Yeah. I quite like Birds of Prey.
Starting point is 00:25:00 I don't know if I'm in the minority there. No, I don't mind Birds of Prey. I'd have to have a rewatch. Yeah, I've seen it once. Yeah. Yeah. Ah, what else was there? They did a bunch of these, didn't they?
Starting point is 00:25:10 Aquaman? Black Adam? Not those ones. Shazam 1 or 2? Flash? 2023? No. Interesting.
Starting point is 00:25:18 Not that one. Interesting. There's got to be any of them. Maybe on a rewatch, she'll enjoy that one more. Well, we'll probably do a movie commentary for it, won't we, Mason? That's right. Well, we'll probably do a movie commentary for it, won't we, Mason? That's right. So, yeah. Look, first reactions don't mean anything because they're always this.
Starting point is 00:25:31 Yeah, that's right. And if they're not, it's fucked. Whatever they've made is really bad. If it's anything less than this. That's right, yeah. But it just depends on what degree of middling to really good this is. So we don't really know. We'll see.
Starting point is 00:25:44 We'll see. Do you like some hot behind-the-scenes comic book stuff, Mason? Yeah, I love nothing more than hot. Maybe a parody of such a thing? Like that movie, the Netflix one, where it was like, we're doing a lockdown movie. Oh, The Bubble. The Bubble.
Starting point is 00:25:58 Yeah, here we go. The Bubble, where they shrank down and went inside a Michael Bubble. HBO new series, though, get this. HBO has ordered a new comedy series bubble where they shrank down and went inside a Michael bubble. HBO new series though, get this. Okay. HBO has ordered a new comedy series titled The Franchise and the show will tackle the concept of a superhero movie franchises, of superhero movie franchises, like the MCU or the DC Universe. James, you don't have to give me any such examples.
Starting point is 00:26:21 I already know. MCU. You might be listening. The DCU. The Bloodshot Universe. Yep. The DCEU. That's right. The Metelliverse. I already know. MCU. You might be listening. The DCU. The Bloodshot Universe. Yep. The DCEU. That's right.
Starting point is 00:26:27 The Matteliverse. That's right. Which is happening big time. Here's a quote. And all the Mattel sublines. Exactly. Like the Viewmasterverse. Yes.
Starting point is 00:26:37 All the movies are going to be set in the Viewmasterverse. Every slide's a different universe. You can be at any lake. Oh, now I'm at the Taj Mahal. Now I'm at a different universe. You can be at any lake. Oh, now I'm at the Taj Mahal. Now I'm at a different lake. The crew of an unloved franchise movie fight for their place in a savage and unruly cinematic universe. Okay.
Starting point is 00:26:53 The franchise shines a light on the secret chaos inside the world of superhero movie making to ask the question, how exactly does a cinematic sausage get made? Because every fuck up has an origin story. It stars Himesh Patel, who was in that movie yesterday where everybody forgot the Beatles, and A.R. Cash, who was Stormfront in The Boys. Now, it's written by John Brown, who worked on Succession.
Starting point is 00:27:20 Fake name. No, real. Interesting. It's J-O-N as well. Succession and Miss name. No, real. Interesting. It's J-O-N as well. Succession and Misfits. Very fake. Fake and lazy. Well, my name's going to be John Brown with an H.
Starting point is 00:27:30 Nah. Nah, it's too much work. Succession and Misfits, though, that's good. And he's going to serve as the showrunner also. And Oscar winner Sam Mendes is directing the pilot. Sam Mendes? This could be good. He directed one of the Bond movies probably.
Starting point is 00:27:46 And City of Angels, I think. Which one was that? That Nicolas Cage movie where he's an angel. Where he's an angel. With Meg Ryan. It's a trench coat and it's a Goo Goo Dolls iris. That's not true, is it? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:27:55 He directed American Beauty. That was a beauty, wasn't it? That was very, that was a beauty. But in hindsight, maybe. I stood up in the cinema and went, you're a beauty. I think that was maybe all bad in hindsight, wasn't it? Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:28:08 What else did he direct? Who directed City of Angels if not Sam Mendes? I don't know. He might have. Okay. Okay. Brad Silberling. Brad Silberling.
Starting point is 00:28:24 Yeah, you know? No. You also directed Casper, directed Land of the Lost. You directed Lemony Snicket's something, something, and something, and something. Why do I think Sam Mendes directed City of Angels? I don't know. Yeah, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:28:35 I don't know why you think anything. Zach, that's a great point. I'm an enigma. Yeah, man. Yeah, that's it. Trailers Ahoy. Did he direct Vanilla Sky? Is that why?
Starting point is 00:28:46 No, that was the same director. No, it wasn't the same director. Penelope Cruz was in both. That was Cameron Crowe. Huh. Yeah. There you go. Anything else?
Starting point is 00:28:56 About Sam Mendes? Yeah. I don't know. Do you know We Bought a Zoo came out in 2011? No. Feels like a 2019, 2020 movie. Did you know that? I didn't know that. Because people are always talking
Starting point is 00:29:08 about it. Why? Because I clicked on Cameron Crowe. Okay. And the last movie he directed was Aloha in 2015. Okay, sure. But he also directed We Bought a Zoo. Wow. Yeah, so there you go. Anyways, go on.
Starting point is 00:29:24 Looking for Sam Mendes. Sam Mendes. I'm trying to find the link where I thought he directed that. I don't know. I can't do it. There's no way to do that. Speaking of directors, this is a bit of sad news. Did you know William Friedkin passed away this week?
Starting point is 00:29:38 87. 87, yeah. So for people who don't know him, he directed The French Connection in the 70s and The Exorcist, which I find a very funny movie. He directed Sorcerer. He did. Well, yeah, so Sorcerer is a movie. People know him from the first two.
Starting point is 00:29:54 People should also check out Sorcerer. I think it's on YouTube and nobody's noticed. Oh, it's one of those ones, is it? Yeah. I'm just watching it on YouTube. It's got Roy Schneider. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So that's about these four. I Roy Schneider. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But so that's about, it's about these four.
Starting point is 00:30:05 I'll tell you this. In a small South American town, four men on the run from the law are offered $10,000 in legal citizenship if they transport a shipment of dangerously unstable nitroglycerin to an oil well, which is, you'd think if it was close, easy money. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Like it was next door. Yeah, but it's 200 miles away.
Starting point is 00:30:22 Oh, that's heaps of miles. That's ages. Yeah. That's ages. That's a whole day maybe. Was that just off the top of the dome? Of my dome? Yeah, yeah, yeah, like it was next door. Yeah, but it's 200 miles away. Oh, that's heaps away. Yeah. That's ages. That's a whole day maybe. Was that just off the top of the dome? Of my dome? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:30:29 Yeah. Yeah. Actually, I had that idea independent of this movie. So in that movie there's a big scene. Their path is blocked by an enormous tree trunk. Yeah. They've got to blow it up with dynamite. So to get that done, William Friedkin, this is the 70s.
Starting point is 00:30:46 Cruise were not as professional as they are now. Tom Cruise. He hired a former arsonist who specialised in insurance fraud to blow it up and he called the guy's house and he got his wife and he's like, hey, can you put your husband on the phone? And she's like, he doesn't do it anymore. He's like, no, this is a real job. He doesn't do it anymore. He's like, no, this is a real job. He doesn't do it anymore.
Starting point is 00:31:07 Here's some fun facts about William Friedkin. For the French Connection, which is a crime film, there's a car chase in New York and they wouldn't allow it. Like at the time they were like, there's supposed to be like a rail crash on this particular bridge and they're like, we can't do it because there's never been one and we won't allow you to like simulate one and all this sort of stuff. Blah, blah, blah. Blah, blah, blah.
Starting point is 00:31:32 So they talk to a guy high up in New York Transit and they're like, there's basically no way you can get this made. And Friedkin's like, what do you mean basically no way? And the guy's like, give me $40,000 and a ticket to Jamaica and you can just do it. To live? Yeah, he just left. So, yeah, the guy just burned his career.
Starting point is 00:31:53 Because that would have been a lot. I mean, then, yeah. In Jamaica it would have been tons of money. Yeah. What other stories? That's great. Yeah, this is the era. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:32:01 This is like he built his career on this sort of stuff. Can I shoot here? No. Well, shoot here? No. Well, I have a knife. All right. Oh, also, Sorcerer, that movie's good, but it disappeared because it came out in 1977, which is when Star Wars came out,
Starting point is 00:32:18 which destroyed everything at the box office. But I was going to say he made a movie in the mid-'80s, I think, called To Live and Die in L.A., which is about. To live and die in L.A. That's what it's about. It's about counterfeiting. It's about these FBI guys and they join the counterfeiting. Are you countertop?
Starting point is 00:32:37 Yes, James. Yeah. They join the counterfeiting division and Willem Dafoe's in that movie and they, in order to make it look realistic, they hide like a real money counterfeiting division and uh willem defoe's in that movie and they in order to make it look realistic they hide like a real money counterfeiter and they just firing they taught they taught they taught really they taught willem defoe how to do it but there's a bunch of scenes where you don't see him you just see the money being made you know the fake money and whatever and so that they just got the actual counterfeiter to do it so at the end of the shoot they had a lot
Starting point is 00:33:05 of fake money that was indistinguishable from real money and then like a few years ago william once i guess the statute of limitations on this particular crime and past he admitted he just started spending the money he just collected a bunch of the money he just started spending and there's like there's interview footage where apparently in the immediate aftermath of the film because apparently- How much money did they- Like a million dollars. Apparently a lot of it was burned, but I don't know if that's true.
Starting point is 00:33:39 Yeah, okay, all right. But apparently- There's very specific rules around money now. Like what you can use and how you can use it. What it's made from. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But, and yeah, so apparently. That's so funny.
Starting point is 00:33:50 So apparently I think maybe somebody in the production staff or something went down the street during the production of the film and like went and bought a candy or something like that. Yeah. And then the police got involved and the, you know, the Treasury Department got involved. So William Friedkin kept getting calls from Treasury being like, hey, we just want you to come down and have a chat about this. And he's like, you got a warrant? And they're like, no. And he's like, well, then I'm not. Fuck off. Anyway, great. It's really good.
Starting point is 00:34:14 It's also, if you, like I said, I never found the exorcist particularly scary. I always thought it was quite funny. Exorcist is great. But there is... A new exorcist movie, you're correct. There is. Well, yeah. which I'm sure he would hate. But there's also the exorcist commentary, the Friedkin commentary is also on YouTube.
Starting point is 00:34:31 So if you want to listen to that, it's really interesting. Yeah, right. There you go. When did he record that? Like mid-2000s? Something like that. Quite recent, yeah. Cool.
Starting point is 00:34:41 Good stuff. Good stuff. My trailer's ahoy. Hank. There he is the continental got a new trailer yeah but uh in the john wicker verse that's right imagine a imagine a show but without john wick oh yeah what do you think pretty good maybe it looks better than the last trailer it does doesn't it i thought the action actually looked quite interesting yes yeah
Starting point is 00:35:00 well we've got a new guy in the role of John Wick. Another guy. The other guy. The other guy? The other guy, yeah. The guy who runs the hotel. The guy that runs the hotel. Hotel mate. Mr. Hotel.
Starting point is 00:35:10 Yeah. Sure. So that's out. Guy from Deadwood. Mr. Hotel. That's right. So that's out at some point, isn't it? Sure is.
Starting point is 00:35:15 Yeah. It's a three-part event. Is it? Yep. I didn't say that in the trailer. Well, it is. No, I believe you. Okay.
Starting point is 00:35:20 I believe you. Okay. I wish it were true. All right. There's some fun little nods. You watched it for the first time here. And you were like, what? That's from a movie. And I'm like, I wish it were true. All right. There's some fun little nods. You watched it for the first time here and you were like, what? That's from a movie.
Starting point is 00:35:27 And I'm like, it is from a movie. Oh, and they said, we need to do a Matrix or whatever. Yeah, that's right. There's a line like that in it. That's good. And another trailer, this is more niche, but people might be interested. It's not a trailer.
Starting point is 00:35:40 It's a teaser trailer for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Last Ronin, the video game. And in the trailer it says, it's mostly text and candles. Yes. And the candles are getting slowly snuffed out because if you don't know that comic book story. It's a snuff film. It's right.
Starting point is 00:35:55 Three of the four Ninja Turtles have died and there's one left and it's a bit of a mystery in the comic about who it is that's revealed at the end of the first issue. Speaking of, we actually coincidentally, we covered that very comic this week on Big Sandwich Classic Comic Book Club or whatever. If you signed up at Big Sandwich, we talk all about that and the Ninja Turtles universe and how it started
Starting point is 00:36:16 and where it's going and whatever. Good chance, I think. That was pure coincidence that this trailer came out. But anyways, there's not much to it. And then I didn't even notice this when I watched it, but there's a line in it which says. There's a title card. I wrote it down.
Starting point is 00:36:29 From the minds of the creators of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Just say from the creators of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I mean, where else is it going to be from? From their little hands. Their little hands, I guess. Hands and feeties. So we didn't know who was working on this. The only thing we've heard is that it's God of War-esque,
Starting point is 00:36:48 like the newer ones. But now we know that it's under THQ Nordic. Okay. But it's specifically Black Forest Games. Okay. Now they did a bunch of stuff, including the recent Destroy All Humans remake, which are all right apparently.
Starting point is 00:37:03 Sort of XCOM style, I think. I don't think so. I think you're just a little guy and you run around and you zap people with lasers or whatever. It's like a 1950s style. Yeah. I've never played it. Apparently they're good.
Starting point is 00:37:13 And there's like one piece of concept art in the trailer. So this is like at least two years away if they make it. That's true. So, yeah. Just news, you know? I love that. Yeah. I don't know. I wish there was kind of more here to go on, but it didn't exactly inspire
Starting point is 00:37:30 confidence in me for this project, but you know, you never know. Superhero movies have ruined comedies. According to whom? Adam Devine. You know him? He is the workaholics guy. Yeah. Mike and Dave need wedding dates, etc. He's in Pitch Perfect. He's in Jexy.
Starting point is 00:37:47 He's in Pitch Perfect and the Pitch Perfect spin-off TV series. That's right, yeah. He was on Theo Vaughn's podcast and he said this about movies. My theory is, because basically comedy movies at the moment if you know what I mean. Well, they're a little bit sad trumpet, aren't they?
Starting point is 00:38:05 Yeah. So they're not doing well theatrically. What are comedies like? Right? Yeah, absolutely. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Big rock and roll?
Starting point is 00:38:17 Big rock and roll, baby. Yeah, cool. I meant to do this. Oh, yeah. That's what we want to hear in the cinema. We're going to get some laughs on the big silver screen He said my theory is I think Marvel ruined it I feel like superhero movies kind of ruin comedies
Starting point is 00:38:33 Because people go to the theatres And you expect to watch something that costs 200 million to make And comedy movies aren't that So you're like well why would I spend the same amount of money To go watch a little comedy in a theatre If I could spend the same amount of money And go see something that's worth $200 million.
Starting point is 00:38:48 Yeah. I don't think that's incorrect. I think. Yeah. But also I think the problem with a lot of like superhero movies that are comedies, they're not really very funny. Correct.
Starting point is 00:38:57 Cause they're, they're not explicitly just trying to do that. I recently watched joy ride, which came in when nobody saw it. And it's got one of the, it's got the young lady from everything everywhere at Lawrence. Yes. And it was a lot of fun. It was really cool.
Starting point is 00:39:11 But nobody saw it. And they're all, everything's bombing. And I know people will be like, comedy's awoke now, whatever. Yes, I know. All right. But they're all bombing. And they're all woke. You've got no choice anymore.
Starting point is 00:39:22 They're all woke. They're too woke. No, but there's ones that too woke I can't even think But there's been ones this year that aren't Like Burt Kreischer's comedy That bombed horribly But at least At least they're all bombing
Starting point is 00:39:34 At least they're all cheap I think again that's the model That used to work Movies all used to be Relatively cheap And some of them just sank without a trace yeah but like every 10th one would make a ton of money yeah and that would cover the cost of the rest of them so it's sort of worthwhile but then i guess movie studios were like what if we just made that one yeah what if we just made the one that makes the most money the big money
Starting point is 00:40:02 yeah let's throw away the rest and in order to make surely the way to make the one that makes the most money the big money yeah let's throw away the rest and in order to make surely the way to make the one that makes the big money is to spend an enormous amount on marketing and yeah etc which doesn't work no it doesn't so i think i think that like comedies will return i'll probably take like i don't know what it will specifically but something will catch yeah and this will like come back maybe at the end of the next Marvel movie they'll say, comedies will return. And everybody will be like, yeah! Yeah! But, you know, like. Portals will open and comedies will come out. A portal will open and the Blues Brothers will come out.
Starting point is 00:40:34 Oh, no. That's bad. That's right. It's the bad Blues Brothers. The one with John Goodman. I like John Goodman, but I don't like that movie, Mason. So, yeah, I don't know. Porkies will come out. Oh, they't like that movie, Mason. So, yeah, I don't know. Porkies will come out.
Starting point is 00:40:46 Oh, they're all rapists, Mason. The Police Academy. They're also that. I don't know any of this, Mason. I don't like any of it. I can't think of a good comedy. I can't think of a single one. Well, they exist.
Starting point is 00:41:01 So, yeah, I think something we'll catch. You know, horror kind you know, there's like horror kind of reinvents itself every few years and it's, and horror always, it's kind of always done well because it is low budget and, you know, you kind of, I don't know, I think something will happen. I don't know what it is. And if I knew, then I guess someone would do it. I assume someone would else, if I knew someone else would, I'd already figured it out. Yeah. How this, though? Go on. This is via MyTimeToShineHello on Twitter, who loves a scoop,
Starting point is 00:41:28 and apparently the Nova series has been scrapped. Okay, so this would be – so in the Guardians movies, in the first Guardians movie, we saw the – The Nova Corps. The Nova Corps, who were like space fighters kind of thing. Yeah. And Nova is a guy in a big suit and he flies around. Or a boy.
Starting point is 00:41:46 And he flies, that's right, and he flies around space and he shoots lasers. Yeah, or a boy. Or it could be a boy. Yeah. So apparently now they're going to focus on other stuff and we'll get back to Nova down the line. Okay. Because initially this was going to be a series.
Starting point is 00:41:59 Right. And then it was going to be maybe a special presentation like the Guardians Christmas special. Okay. And now it's nothing. Now it's nothing. But I think that is part of the strikes, but it's also part of I feel Marvel and Disney
Starting point is 00:42:10 paring everything down. Yeah, right. Because, again, in the comics for most of Nova's history, he has been a man. Yeah. But sometimes Nova is a boy, like you mentioned. Nova boy. Do you think it might have been like a more kid-focused show?
Starting point is 00:42:21 Potentially. Okay. I guess we'll see how Blue Beetle does. Well, that's right. Yeah. And, you know, I don't know. I don't know. Everything's in flux.
Starting point is 00:42:30 And it makes me nervous because I just want content. I am. It's perfect. Where am I going to get my content from? Everywhere else. Actually, oh, yeah, you're right. Also via Mattel because this is via THR. This is where we get our content, folks.
Starting point is 00:42:41 Thank goodness. Now that Barbie has made a billion dollar and Mattel want to keep that momentum. They want more billion dollar. More billion dollar? Yeah, if you could. Like Greta Gerwig, you got more idea for billion dollar? No, which is basically what you said. Apparently no deals are in place for anybody involved
Starting point is 00:42:56 in the first Barbie film, so that's not moving forward any time soon. They were like, maybe we should talk about this before it comes out, and she was like, why don't we wait until this comes out? Yeah, I bet they were like, maybe we should talk about this before it comes out. And she was like, why don't we wait till this comes out? Maybe we can lock you down for three more movies for a very small amount of money before this comes out. And she was probably like,
Starting point is 00:43:11 no. Why don't you lock down this? Whoa. Thank you. I didn't know that was good. I didn't know what that was going to do. I was giving the birth. Yeah, that's right. Giving the two fingers. So now that that's made a billion dollars, I mean, if she does it, and Noah Baumbach, who wrote it with her, I mean,
Starting point is 00:43:31 they've got a lot of- Got a lot of bargaining power. Yeah, sway there. Plus you've got to get all the cast and whatever. And Ryan Gosling has never done a sequel. Yeah, right. I don't know what Margot Robbie- I don't know what she's thinking.
Starting point is 00:43:42 What is she thinking, mate? What she said in advance, she was like, I think this is going to's thinking. What is she thinking, Mason? Well, she said, you know, in advance, she was like, I think this is going to make a billion dollars. And everyone went, boo! Not a girl's thing, boo! Only a boy's thing can make a billion dollars. A boy's thing and then the girls are in one scene and they're like,
Starting point is 00:43:57 we're all the girls. Yeah, exactly. That's my favourite thing in a movie. We've got lasers too. Yeah. The pink lasers. Now back to the boys. That's my favourite thing, but it also makes me mad, Mason. That's right and we've got lasers too. Yeah. The pink lasers. Now back to the boys. That's my favourite thing but it also makes me mad, Mason. That's right. I don't know what to feel.
Starting point is 00:44:10 But in the meantime, they're like, what else are we doing? So at the moment, they're searching for a director for their Hot Wheels movie which JJ Abrams has produced. We talked about this
Starting point is 00:44:17 a few weeks back. We did, that's true, yeah. They've got 45 properties in the works. Apparently, they're shopping around to different directors but there is no script.
Starting point is 00:44:24 So I think it's them going, if you were to make a Hot Wheels movie, we have an idea, but what would your idea be, hypothetically, for example? Yeah. So there you go. Do you put them on a track? Yeah. Go around the track? You tell us.
Starting point is 00:44:36 Yeah. Could you add some drama, human drama to that? Some Hot Wheels going around the track? Do you do it like a tournament? Stephen, Mr Spielberg, would you have the cars be very big or very little? Bearing in mind we've already made a decision, but if you could tell us, would it be more dramatically interesting
Starting point is 00:44:55 if they were little cars like normal or very big cars like regular cars? Mr Spielberg. Yeah, tell us. Come back, Mr Spielberg. All right. Starting point is 00:46:17 Dracula goes nautical, Mason. That's right. He's having a little ship adventure. A little ship adventure and a little jaunt, you know. That's right, yeah. On a budget of $45 million. Why wouldn't you? Why wouldn't you? You know? He wants to go to England.
Starting point is 00:46:30 Get some fresh sea air. Legitimately. Yeah. For a lot of this movie. We'll get to it. But I'm like, I wouldn't mind that. Just being out on the sea. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:46:38 Yes, please. But it's all like this. Yeah. And you're in an old boat. I love that. You're shitting a can. Yeah, I love that. You can do that at your house. It's not the same.
Starting point is 00:46:46 You could just put on a screensaver on your television of the ocean with whale noises and shit in a can. How do I get the fresh sea air though? I don't know. I guess I could sniff some salt. Get some seafood. I go to the fish and chip shop. Yeah, open it up, put it on the kitchen table.
Starting point is 00:47:01 Put it on the counter. Wow, problem solved. I'm going to go. On a budget of $45 million. It's called Dracula, The Voyage of the Dementor. Demeter. Demeter or Dracula or The Last Voyage of the Demeter. Yeah, or another thing.
Starting point is 00:47:18 Might be called another. Oh, it is called another thing. I think in France or something it's called like Terror Boat or something. On a budget of $45 million. Dracula with cheese it's called. Fromage. It's looking to have, this is by Variety,
Starting point is 00:47:34 a $7 to $9 million weekend. And Variety called this disastrous. So it's going up against TMNT, going up against the Meg 2, which is doing super well internationally. The Meg 2. Oh, interesting. Barbie and Oppenheimer,
Starting point is 00:47:48 there's that PlayStation commercial out at the moment. So all of these things are happening at the moment. We were going to see the PlayStation commercial as well, but we couldn't squeeze it into our busy schedules. That's right. I had a can to buy. Yeah. And some fish and chips.
Starting point is 00:48:03 That's right. Anyways, Dracula Goes Nautical. What do you think the story was? Well, all right. There's a gentleman. He's a doctor and he's like, I reckon I want to – he's in Bulgaria or something and he's like, I want to get on a boat and go to England. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:48:18 There's only a boat to take me to England. There is a boat. It's a boat. They're like, we're looking for strong hands on the boat. We've got to ship these mysterious boxes of dirt. They've paid us to move these boxes of dirt, so we're going to take them to London. And he's like, all right, I'll get on that boat.
Starting point is 00:48:31 And he gets on that boat. Do they know it's dirt? Yeah. It says boxes of dirt. Okay. The log says boxes of dirt. Yeah. And they're like, all right.
Starting point is 00:48:40 And he's like, I'll get on that boat. And then they go on the boat and they go to the high seas. And he's like, I love this sea air. Love it. Yep. And then. I love this can that we all shit in. And then there's some mysterious happenings on the boat.
Starting point is 00:48:52 What's happening on the boat? It's actually Bram Stoker's Dracula Chapter 7 is what's happening. So what they've done, they've taken that particular portion of the novel and they've made it into a movie. Now, you would have seen moments of this in Bram Stoker's Dracula from 1992. Horny Dracula. Horny Dracula.
Starting point is 00:49:08 I mean, that's the thing that is either dragging this down or it's helping its case. We've seen so many Draculas recently. Yeah. We rewatched Horny Dracula from the 90s. Yeah. We've got. Dracula with an iPad.
Starting point is 00:49:19 Dracula. I mean. They also did this. Yeah, yeah, that's right. The second episode just prior to him getting an iPad. Yeah. The second episode. It was good. It's the same this. Yeah, yeah, that's right. The second episode just prior to him getting an iPad. Yeah. The second episode. It was good.
Starting point is 00:49:25 It's the same idea. Yeah. But it's more. He's a passenger on the boat also. Yeah. Like he's not scurrying about all the time. That's right. And, of course, we've got Dracula Untold.
Starting point is 00:49:39 Yep. The classic tale of Dracula. Yep. So, you know, this movie's got a lot of competition. Dracula Untold. The game is on. Oh, my God, what a movie. What got a lot of competition. Dracula Untold. The game is on. Oh, my God, what a movie. What a movie.
Starting point is 00:49:47 That's what I'm saying. The definitive version possibly. But also interesting. So I watched this movie on the 9th of August. That's when it came. There was advanced screenings on the 9th of August. Not to brag, James. Was that on a Wednesday?
Starting point is 00:50:02 Yes. I saw it too on a Wednesday. No, no, no. In the book, the 9th of August, the book Dracula, not just any book, but on the 9th of August, that's when the Demeter runs aground. So is that a coincidence? I feel it must be a coincidence because back in the day, that's the sort of thing you could organize, I think.
Starting point is 00:50:19 You'd be like, well, it's important that it's released on the 9th because that's when that's a little nod to the whatever. But I don't think now you can do that. Also, I didn't know that. If they did this on purpose, they didn't tell anyone. They didn't tell anyone. They should have released this, like the Haunted Mansion, in October. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:50:32 I think this is pretty good. I think it's pretty good also. There's been some, like, I think Rotten Tomatoes, it might be at like 40-ish percent or something like that, but I think it's way better than that. What do the Rotten Tomatoes guys know? Blah, blah, blah. It's got 44%. Those couple of guys at Rot tomatoes giving it 40 what do they know yeah so i obviously that's not how rotten tomatoes works or whatever but i think this is um
Starting point is 00:50:54 yeah this is it's a pretty solid story and i think it's a really good idea to take just like this element of it and basically blow it out into a whole movie i think that's super interesting. So what I find also interesting about this is where the original idea for this movie came from. Go on. Do you want to tell that story? I don't know what it is.
Starting point is 00:51:13 I'll do it. So basically. Well, now you've made me look like quite the fool. I would have thought you would have put some effort in, basically. Is it in the production tab of Wikipedia? Yes, it is, actually. You can have a look. You can do it.
Starting point is 00:51:23 No, you can do it. It's all right. So Bragggy Shoot Jr. who wrote the story for this, he befriended a colleague. That's what they call me at the firing range. I agree.
Starting point is 00:51:32 Braggy Shoot Jr. That was pretty good. Don't you think? I think it was pretty good. He befriended a colleague who worked on Bram Stoker's Dracula. That's the original horny Dracula.
Starting point is 00:51:42 From 1992. And he worked on the miniature of the Dementor. I'm going to keep saying that. Demeter. It's because you're obsessed with Harry Potter. Oh, yeah. I love Harry Potter. And so if you remember that movie, it's a very brief sequence
Starting point is 00:51:58 where you see, I think you see the boat run aground or something. And all the effects are in camera and practical in that except for one we should you should watch our bram stoker's horny dracula video i actually watched it prior yesterday to be like what was that what did we say about that oh yeah he was too horny we just kept saying that again and again so what happened is this story like floated around for decades like the idea to make this particular movie and like numi rapace was going to be at one point ben kingsley biggo mortiggo Mortensen, Jude Law. So I floated around and around until it came here.
Starting point is 00:52:28 And Viggo Mortensen was going to be in this, but then he broke his foot on the set of Lord of the Rings. Which one? First one? No, Mason. Second one. It was the two towers, Mason. And then he couldn't come in to do this one.
Starting point is 00:52:39 No, he couldn't. So it eventually made its way to the director. How do you say this name? Andre Ordal. Do you ever this name? Andre Orvdal. Do you ever see Trollhunter? No. Trollhunter, he made like this indie kind of horror-ish move from like 2010. Okay.
Starting point is 00:52:53 I saw the movie where there was a giant in Norway. Maybe that was that one. I don't think it's a different one. A giant Norway man? I think it was just called Troll maybe. Okay, yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:53:03 Maybe it was related mason maybe it's related so yeah it's a shame this isn't doing super well what what i liked about this version is they've basically done it like a it was called troll there you go you basically they've done it like a contained isolated it's a bottle episode it's a bottle episode basically yeah it's pretty much all set on the boat and he's more of of kind of a – the Dracula, which is here, is more of a Nosferatu than a horny Dracula. That's right. You're not going to see him in any of his finery too much, potentially,
Starting point is 00:53:34 not to spoil anything or get ahead. But, yeah, he's not very horny at all, maybe for blood. That's right. Certainly. Yeah. So it's mostly practical, like a lot of this. There's a lot of green screen when it comes to like filming on the ocean and especially for the night shooting.
Starting point is 00:53:52 But Javier Botet plays Dracula. He's done creature work before. Yeah, he's quite a famous creature guy. He's really good in this. Yeah. Just a spindly, awful creature scurrying about how did you think about the presentation slenderman he was he was the slenderman how do you feel about like the how they presented this version of dracula in this yeah very very good i think yeah just uh
Starting point is 00:54:16 yeah just um just a just a horrible uh just just i think the idea of like that he is an intelligent creature yeah just sort of masquerading as a man. Yeah. Good stuff. Yeah, absolutely. And apparently the idea was to ride him like a junkie. So and you see him kind of gain power throughout the movie where he's on a boat for a month and there's a certain amount of people on that boat.
Starting point is 00:54:42 So he basically needs to ration the food until he makes it to England. And even though he's this kind of animalistic creature and he doesn't like really talk much or, you know, he's clearly intelligent and he must be able to like make bookings and do real estate and stuff also, which is just incredible. Yeah. But that's easy. You just go to flightcenter.com.au and then it's so easy.
Starting point is 00:55:06 Call Flight Center, lowest airfare is guaranteed, you know? Yeah. So I do know that. Great cast. Liam Cunningham, you might know him as the Onion Knight from Game of Thrones. Corey Hawkins, he was in Black Klansman. Aisling Franchosi.
Starting point is 00:55:28 Did you see The Nightingale? It's like an Australian. Australian? She's Irish, but it's like an Australian. It's not a horror movie, but it's very horrific. It's more just like bad circumstances and bad times. You haven't seen The Nightingale. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:55:45 This movie's very bad circumstances, bad times. It's got a very, it's sort of, I feel it's sort of relentlessly grim. Yeah, absolutely. I enjoyed it, but it's got, you've got to be prepared for that. Yeah. That. Yeah, it's not a PG-13 horror movie. No. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:55:57 David Dash Melchin's in it. He's in everything. He's probably the most famous cast member of this. Oh, Liam Cunningham's pretty famous. He's the captain. Okay, yeah, you're probably right. Yeah. But I think. It Cunningham's pretty famous. He's the captain. Okay, you're probably right. Yeah. But to young, hip audiences.
Starting point is 00:56:08 It is, yeah. I think part of that, though, like that feeling of dread is the boat set or sets is really good. It feels like really authentic and awful and potentially plague ridden and it's just wet and cold. Yeah. But that's great sea air, James. I don't think you want that at all.
Starting point is 00:56:30 How much sea travel have you done of late? You might be one of those people who get incredibly seasick and you don't know until you're on a boat. No, I've been on a boat a bunch of times. But this is a different boat, Mason. This isn't a big boat. It's the same boat I always get. You get on this boat?
Starting point is 00:56:43 Yeah. Was it post or pre-Draculus? It's post. It wasn't the last voyage of the Demeter at all. Yeah, you're right. You get on this boat? Yeah. Was it post or pre-Dracula's? It's post. It wasn't the last voyage of the Demeter at all. Yeah, you're right. Okay. But this boat crashed. We see it at the start and they go, what happened?
Starting point is 00:56:51 Big boat crash. We think Dracula did it. Here's one thing I did like about this. Okay. They don't know what is happening. Correct. And they're not like, well, it's a Dracula. So we use garlic and mirrors and put a stake through the heart
Starting point is 00:57:08 and whatever. They're just like, we don't know. Could we shoot it? There was a guy behind me in the cinema who was talking to himself some of the movie and not all of it, but at one point he went, oh, just use fire. Oh, just use fire. Just use fire. You can't just use fire oh just use fire you can't just use fire dracula and i wanted to
Starting point is 00:57:27 be like dude they haven't seen any vampire movies they don't know because they're in the past but i didn't say anything because i thought he might stab me yeah he might stab you yeah but i think it's interesting where in a world where in a world where you don't know what dracula is then what do you do what do you do you don't know they just think it's like this immortal well it is i guess this like this impossible being that can be anywhere and do anything yeah whereas if like if you know what dracula is it all works piece of cake yeah it's piece of cake. It all works within the rules of a certain type of
Starting point is 00:58:07 vampire, or Dracula if you will That's right. Yeah. To give it its correct name Yeah, that's right, yeah But yeah, I thought that just that was a really interesting perspective, like there is somebody on the boat who's like okay, so I kind of know this thing that like stalks our village and they're like
Starting point is 00:58:23 how do we kill it? And she's like why would, it's been around for like hundreds of years, like, so I kind of know this thing that like stalks our village and they're like, how do we kill it? And she's like, why would – it's been around for like hundreds of years. Like why would I know? Do you think we would have figured it out? Yeah. You know, everybody's left and everybody's dead in my village because of this guy. We don't know what to – Yeah.
Starting point is 00:58:38 You know, so. But we don't like him, I'll tell you that much. Yeah, that's right. Yeah. But it is like even though you know that like it's not going to end well for the crew it is it's grim like it's some of the stuff that they do in this like characters that you think like oh that person will make it through or oh this you know we're going to get a bit of a break here it doesn't doesn't really give you any much hope does it no i also think it frames dracula really well like you you see quite a bit
Starting point is 00:59:07 of it i guess but the way it'll be like you'll pan over and it'll just be like you really like crouch in the corner yes absolutely it'll just be in the room and how supernatural just crawling across the deck yeah slowly yeah like oh because there's that there's the moment where the one of the characters will see it coming quite slowly and you're like, oh. Because there's the moment where one of the characters will see it coming quite slowly and you're like, and there's that just moment of tension where you're like, what do you do then? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:59:32 You know? I mean, I would simply, you know. Use fire. I would use fire simply. I would simply use fire and then probably cut his head off with a bowie knife and then stuff his neck with garlic or whatever. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You know, but, you know, I'm built different.
Starting point is 00:59:44 Yeah. But they're like, do you run? Do you attack? Yeah. You don't know. Is this even a threat? Yeah. Like when you first say it, you know?
Starting point is 00:59:52 Yeah, I thought that was really good. There is like supernatural elements to this creature, obviously, but it's not magic. Yeah. Like it's not going to turn into a puff of smoke or disappear through a wall. Like it's like a to turn into a puff of smoke or disappear through a wall. Like it's like a golem kind of situation. A ghoul, if you will.
Starting point is 01:00:11 Yeah, that's a better way to put it. A golem is made of mud. Yeah, I meant golem as in the- Oh, golem. Yes, I misspoke, but you are- He's like a golem, isn't he? Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:00:21 He's a big skinny golem. Yeah. Should we do spoilers? Let's do spoilers. I think you should, if you like horror movies- Yeah. I think He's a big skinny golem. Yeah. Should we do spoilers? Let's do spoilers. I think you should. If you like horror movies. Yeah. I think this is definitely worth.
Starting point is 01:00:29 Or Dracula movies. Or Dracula. If you're a Dracula movie aficionado, if you just love seeing a Dracula on screen. That's right. I think absolutely. Bring your Drac back. Worthy addition to the canon.
Starting point is 01:00:37 Not as good, obviously, as Dracula Untold. Yeah. Because, spoiler alert, he never summons a bunch of bats and makes them into a big bat fist and then punches somebody with a big bat fist, punches an army with a big bat fist. That was cool, yeah. Which was obviously homaged in Morbius. Yeah, absolutely.
Starting point is 01:00:55 But other than that, pretty good. Best movie ever. Best movie ever, agreed. Big spoiler time. It's big time spoiler time. Part of me was like at the start because dracula's on the boat i thought one of the crewmen was going to be dracula because there's a couple of them the guy you know the guy who comes on board who's like the main character and he's kind of you see him
Starting point is 01:01:17 kind of waiting anxiously and then he gets on this boat he's like insistent that he gets on this boat so he can get to england and he's like i I just want to understand the world or whatever. And I'm like, that's fucking Dracula. Because Dracula is all about like, I want to understand humankind and Eden and whatever. And then for like a good portion of this movie, you don't see him and Dracula in the same frame. Well, maybe that was it. Maybe they changed it in post.
Starting point is 01:01:40 I don't think they did. Also, it was outside in the daylight. Well, yeah, but depending what you're doing're doing what version you're doing he can do that that's true but then it becomes very apparent that this version of dracula like and she even says because they find a woman on board who dracula basically brought on board to eat to drink for the month um as a snack it's a light snack that His bag of scroggin'. Yeah. She's like, yeah, he can like- His muesli bar.
Starting point is 01:02:09 That's right. He can disguise himself as a man. So that would to me also- I mean, not well. No, because then at the end you see him in his finery and he's just a ghoul in a coat. I was sort of assuming that was under the – I was sort of assuming that by that point in the movie he would have sort of evolved slightly
Starting point is 01:02:29 and looked more like the actor's name. I think his name's Clash Bang. Yeah, yeah. The guy who played Dracula in the – we mock the previous Dracula, Dracula with an iPad. Yeah. But I think he's great as Dracula. Oh, he's a good Dracula, yeah.
Starting point is 01:02:41 He's an excellent Dracula. He looked the part. It's good until the iPad part. It's a genuinely good show. It's's good until the iPad part. It's a genuinely good show. It's genuinely good until the iPad part. Yeah. But, yeah, I would have loved it if, like, he'd, you know, the main character, he'd survived, you know,
Starting point is 01:02:53 he's the one survivor and he gets to this pub and he sees the guy and it's like James Corden or something. He's transformed. He's fully evolved and he's filled with blood and he's turned into James Corden. He's like, ooh. So when he's at the pub. And also you see they find.
Starting point is 01:03:08 God, isn't it good to be at the pub? Good to be at the pub. Oh, my God. You get that fresh sea air. They find Dracula's cane because he's sleeping in the dirt. So I'm like, oh, he's going to. But he still just looks like a ghoul in a coat. And presumably, and you see a bit of this during the movie,
Starting point is 01:03:23 he could kind of be in the room with you and you not notice so i think that's kind of what yeah you could do there is like a he can carry himself in a way that he's not yeah noticed also a lot of the people in that pub look like that yeah just dark gray men yeah yeah big big pointed teeth yeah yeah fair enough yeah do you um do you think that they're going, they're not going to, because this won't do well. Correct. But a sequel to this
Starting point is 01:03:49 could have been interesting. I would like to see a sequel to this. You know, he teams up with, the one survivor teams up with like Van Helsing or whatever. Oh my God, that could be the dawn of a dark universe. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:03:58 Please. And they're like, let's beat up Dracula. Yeah, nice. Beat him up good. Yeah. I just think, I mean, there's,
Starting point is 01:04:04 again, because you know, you know what he is. It is kind of frustrating to watch because you're like, it's a Dracula. Like just their idea at the end is to scuttle the boat and escape, but they wait until nighttime to do it. Right. And it's like just if you did that in the daytime, that probably would have worked.
Starting point is 01:04:21 Right. You just would have got him. Yeah, I guess. Yeah. I guess I set that aside. I didn't really think about it. have got him. Yeah, yeah, I guess. Yeah. I guess I set that aside. I didn't really think about it. I'm like, well, then, you know, then not to know, are they? No, but also like anybody who gets bitten bursts into flames.
Starting point is 01:04:35 That's true. You know, so presumably you'd make some kind of connection that like why are we waiting until it's spooky to leave? Okay, right. Let's leave when it's not spooky. Yeah. See, here's the thing, though. Like maybe, you know, maybe. Maybe they need to get closer. Yeah, but I was going to say. Okay, right. Let's leave when it's not spooky. Yeah, see, here's the thing, though. Like, you know, maybe it –
Starting point is 01:04:46 Maybe they need to get closer. Yeah, but I was going to say – well, that's true. But also maybe, you know, I'd be like, I don't know if the sample size is big enough. Maybe they're just bursting the flames at random intervals. I don't know. You can't know to be sure. We'll get another guy bit and then we'll –
Starting point is 01:05:02 God, they kill a kid. I think they did say we have to make it closer to shore. Yeah, you're probably right, yeah. They kill a kid in... God, they kill a kid. I think they did say we have to make it close to the shore. Yeah, you're probably right. They kill a kid in this. They do kill a kid. Which I did not expect. And then the kid comes back to life and then bursts into flames. That was nuts. Yeah, that was nuts actually. And if you've got nothing
Starting point is 01:05:18 else to say, I've got a review here. Okay, go on. It's from JC Fox who says, a few weeks ago I saw a Gran Turismo movie early. It was pretty good. Gran Turismo movie based on a true story? Yeah, that's right. Based on the video game? Harbor is great in it. It's a little long but it's well paced. My son loved it. It should definitely be watched this week over
Starting point is 01:05:33 Dracula and a boat. So there you go. Oh. Maybe I will check this out. Gran Turismo? Yeah, why not? Okay. Maybe I'll watch it this week if I get time, which I might not. But what if I did? What if you did? I don't think we got any other reviews for Dracula on a boat. Probably not a great sign, I would suggest.
Starting point is 01:05:51 Not a great sign, no. Generally not, no. So, yeah. That's about it, I think. Yeah, like you said, worthy success of C. Dracula. He's a C. Dracula. That's right. He's a C. Dracula.
Starting point is 01:06:02 He's a real C of a Dracula. Always eating people and so forth. But you could watch Br this in, like you could watch Bram Stoker's Dracula and watch this in the middle of it, you know? Oh, sure, okay. I guess if you wanted to. Yeah, you definitely could. Sort of works. You could watch half of Bram Stoker's Dracula, go to the movies, come back.
Starting point is 01:06:18 Sure. Absolutely. Yeah. Though bearing in mind it is a different Dracula. Dracula was not as horny. That's true. As far as we're aware. You can't turn it into a big stack of rats. That's true. As far as we're aware. He can't turn into a big stack of rats.
Starting point is 01:06:27 That's true. All right, should we move it along? Let's move it along. Woo! What is it? It's time for what we're reading. Yep. What are we going to read?
Starting point is 01:06:35 I'm doing the thing. What are we reading today? What are you doing? That's a great question. This is the section where we talk about what have we been doing. That's right. What have you been doing? That's a great question, James. It's actually when we talk about what have we been doing. That's right. What have you been doing? I'll tell you a few things.
Starting point is 01:06:49 Go on. Last week I said I'd watch Shin Kamen Rider, which is the- But you didn't? I did. And? It's all right. That's it? Yeah, I thought it was all right.
Starting point is 01:06:56 Didn't love it? Didn't love it. People get at me, let me know what's very good about it. Like I said last week, I enjoyed Shin Godzilla a lot. You love that a lot. And it's the same director. I don't know, it just didn't grab me in that way. I don't know.
Starting point is 01:07:08 It didn't feel meaningful. I thought it was going to be like a meaningful. Remember that Power Rangers short film? Yeah. The one that had. Yeah, I remember that. James Van Der Beek. James Van Der Beek.
Starting point is 01:07:19 And it was like about what would happen to a bunch of kids if they were turned into Power Rangers and like what would happen to a bunch of kids if they were turned into Power Rangers and like what would happen to their mental state essentially. Bad. Being drafted into this weird intergalactic war. I thought that was interesting. I guess I was kind of expecting something like that from this. Yes, and it is that.
Starting point is 01:07:36 No, it's not that. It's bad. It's not bad. Okay. It's all right. It's, I don't know, maybe I'll give it another spin. Okay. I'll put it on the background and I'll see if I can pick up some more stuff.
Starting point is 01:07:45 Here's a couple of other things that I watched. All right. There's a new season of Only Murders in the Building. Oh, yeah? That's back. The whole season? No, the first two episodes. Paul Rudd's in it.
Starting point is 01:07:54 I haven't seen it. I've got to go back. What am I up to? I don't know. Probably the first episode of the first season or something. Oh, God. This is season three, James. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:08:02 Meryl Streep's in it as well. Yep. So that's pretty great. It's pretty good. And I watched, just to see what it's like, I watched two episodes of Twisted Metal. And? It's pretty fun.
Starting point is 01:08:13 People seem to like that. Here's the thing about it. It's pretty light on plot. Yeah. And the car action is pretty unconvincing considering it is a show or it's based around a video game that is pretty much all about car action. Yeah. Caction.
Starting point is 01:08:29 Caction. It's all about caction and, like, you know, all the muzzle flashes are CGI and all the bullet holes are CGI. Yeah, okay. And it's got that kind of digital fog over it. Yeah, okay. But bearing that all in mind. That's amazing that it's all that and you're like,
Starting point is 01:08:43 yeah, it's pretty good. Well, Anthony Mack is very charming in it. Yeah, okay. It's a different side. He's sort of like this. But before the show, you screamed for 10 minutes at me that he's not your Captain America. I did say that.
Starting point is 01:08:54 And I just had to sit here. But I guess he's my Twisted Metal. He's my Twisted Metal. The character's name's Twisted Metal. Oh, my God. Yeah, like Tristan, but he's got a speech impediment. That's actually not true. But I think he's just very charming.
Starting point is 01:09:10 He sort of portrays this kind of earnest, slightly dumb goofball in this post-apocalyptic world, just getting by and living his life. I think it's quite charming. And it's got... Someone else in it. Yeah, it's got... Will Arnett is the voice of Twiston Metal. Yeah, he's quite charming. And it's got. Someone else in it. Yeah, it's got. Will Arnett is the voice of Twisted Metal.
Starting point is 01:09:27 Yeah, he's the voice of Twisted Metal. Yeah. So that's good. And it's got Stephanie Beatriz from Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Oh, yeah. It doesn't really talk, but she's got a good presence. Yeah. In the show.
Starting point is 01:09:39 And it's got Thomas Hayden Church as a kind of cop who's trying to bring back the law to the post-apocalyptic landscape. Yeah. Yeah. So there you go. Good stuff. It is good stuff.
Starting point is 01:09:51 Well, I thought, seeing as there was a Dracula movie this week, I started to read on a Kindle, it cost me 99 cents, Dracula the book. Oh. The original book from 1897 or whenever it came out or whatever. Because it's written in, or it's similarly to the movie. It's written in like journal entries. That's correct. Anyway, it's pretty good.
Starting point is 01:10:11 Because we've talked about Dracula Daily. You can get it delivered to your inbox. Oh, what's that again? Oh, you get the whole thing. You get the whole thing delivered to your inbox on the days that it's set in the book. So you have to wait a full year for it to come around? Correct. We could read it all in one go.
Starting point is 01:10:29 Yeah. If you're some sort of bloody reading Superman. That's me. That's what they call me. That's great. I'm not a hero. Just a man who can read a book. I never said you were a hero.
Starting point is 01:10:36 No one said you were a hero. No, I'm just getting ahead of it in case you were going to say that. Which it felt like you were going to. No, no, no, no. Yeah. He was actually about to put a cape over my shoulders and I stopped him I said Mason no no no
Starting point is 01:10:48 I was about to put a blanket over your shoulders and be like James it's time for bed James James it's time for bed come on mate great so yeah I would recommend Dracula the book recommend Dracula the book sometimes books are just good
Starting point is 01:11:00 over the movie I mean I haven't finished it yet okay right movie's fun yeah it's ludicrous. Yeah, that's true. Alright, should we move it along? Let's move it on to letters. Letters!
Starting point is 01:11:09 Letters! The classic one was Letters, oh letters We love you, some letters They're only a take away I know they're here right now, we're gonna do letters. Ah
Starting point is 01:11:24 It's time for letters.'re going to do letters. It's time for letters. It is time for letters. If you do want to reach us, we're at hashtag weeklyplanetpod on Twitter or weeklyplanetpod at gmail.com. That's right. That was hashtag weeklyplanetpod, by the way. I love that.
Starting point is 01:11:37 What are you doing in terms of letters or would you like me to do a letter? I've got an email right here for you, James. Okay. Or a letter if you would prefer. I would actually. This is from somebody else called Mason. That's you. First name Mason, though. Well, that's not you.
Starting point is 01:11:49 It's not me at all. Yeah. Hey, James and Mason, after hearing some buzz about the Meg this week, I was thinking about some other monsters, cryptids and creatures that deserve a turn in the spotlight. I know I've got some fun ones here in the States. Any monsters you'd like to see in their own film or show? Monsters that we haven't seen potentially.
Starting point is 01:12:06 Or, you know, classic monsters. A yaoi. A yaoi, certainly, yeah. The bunyip. The bunyip. That's like the Australian Bigfoot. Yeah, that's right. We can do that.
Starting point is 01:12:15 There's rumoured to be, it's not a monster, but there was rumours in Australia, in Victoria. Is this a panther-related thing? It's a panther-related thing. It's got to be. During World War II or something, there was a circus and a bunch of black panthers escaped. I think America has this panther story as well,
Starting point is 01:12:31 but maybe I would love to see that. And I've met people who claim that they've seen it, but if you've ever seen like- Your mates who would claim that. This is country people. If you've ever seen like a wild cat in Australia, they're fucking huge. So if you saw a black wild cat from a distance, you might be like,
Starting point is 01:12:50 yeah, that's a panther. The Blue Mountains panther. Yeah, there's been a- Or the Lithgow panther. Yeah, there's a few variations on this panther. Said to exist by residents of the Blue Mountains area west of Sydney for over a century. So it's over 100 years old, this panther.
Starting point is 01:13:04 Well, it's a family of panthers, isn't it? Oh, okay, it is. All right. Okay. Yeah. Okay. Theory suggests the animal may be a descendant of big cats released by World War II US soldiers.
Starting point is 01:13:14 There we go. Which had been used as military mascots. Yes. So they put a panther on a plane and they brought it down to Australia. There's an Australian neo-Western called Red Hill. Ooh, James. In 2018, Grant Denyer and his wife reported to have sighted the cat. There's an Australian neo-Western called Red Hill. Ooh, James. In 2018, Grant Denyer and his wife reported to have sighted the cat on their property.
Starting point is 01:13:30 There we go. Wow. Well, if Grant Denyer's seen it. Grant Denyer saw it. There's an Australian neo-Western from 2010 called Red Hill starring Ryan Quanton. Oh. And that also features the idea of a thing that I said. A thing? Oh, terrific. The thing that I said, Mason. Oh. And that also features the idea of a thing that I said.
Starting point is 01:13:46 A thing. Oh, terrific. The thing that I said, Mason. Oh. There's a movie. I haven't seen this yet, but it's a movie called Antlers. I've seen Antlers. Is it good?
Starting point is 01:13:53 Yeah. So Jesse Plemons in it, right? Yeah. Kerry Russell. It's not very pleasant. No, I wasn't expecting it to be pleasant. It's very unpleasant. That's what I thought.
Starting point is 01:14:01 Actually. Yeah. Mason. I said Jesse Plemons was in it. I know. I'm telling you. But you're about to put a cape on me, so I'm just getting ahead of that. All right.
Starting point is 01:14:10 Okay, great. It's not very pleasant. Is that a good movie? I mean, it's good, but it's just upsetting. Oh, okay, right. Okay. Yeah, and don't expect at the end that they shoot the monster or whatever. Okay, right.
Starting point is 01:14:21 It's not one of those movies. Okay. Yeah. What's some other American cryptids? See, that's the thing. I feel like a lot of these have been explored, especially in low budget, like the Chupacabra or the Mothman. Yeah, okay.
Starting point is 01:14:34 They did the Mothman prophecies. They've done a bunch of those, yeah. What else? What's a mythical creature? Haunted snowmen. They've been done. They could do another Loch Ness movie with Ted Danson like they did in the 90s.
Starting point is 01:14:44 Absolutely. Let me think. Why would I Google this? What's it called? I don't know. What's it called? Cryptids? How do you spell that?
Starting point is 01:14:52 C-R-Y-P-T-I-D-S. Cryptids. Yeah, give us a big list of cryptids. Let's list a cryptids. Here we go. We could do a tier list one day of cryptids. We could rank all the cryptids and upset all the cryptozoologists. There's a Cabrosaurus, which is the sea serpent from North America.
Starting point is 01:15:11 All right. There's the champ. Oh, the champ. Just a guy who's good at stuff? He shows up and he, like, wins at the Pac-Man game? It's another kind of lake monster. Okay. There's a cryptid whale.
Starting point is 01:15:21 There's a Dobhachoo, which is a giant otter. You know what also? The X-Files has covered a lot of this. I was going to say, yeah, yeah. There's the Lamish, which is some kind of, I don't know what that is. There's a Lavosh, which is a type of fancy cracker. Oh, okay. There's Igpogo.
Starting point is 01:15:42 Okay. It's a wanted pogo stick, sure. Yep. There's the Loveland frog. Is it a big frog? It's a big frog. It's such a big frog. It walks on its hind legs.
Starting point is 01:15:54 Okay, I love. And sometimes it's the Loveland. It says they're Loveland lizard also, but the frog. Yeah. Giant frog. I'm a big fan of that. Love all of that. This one's a Ningen. Okay. Which is this one. This one's a Ningen. Okay.
Starting point is 01:16:05 Which is this one. It looks like a cloud with legs. Look at this. It's like a tadpole cloud with legs. Oh, that's good. Yep. Okay. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:16:14 I guess anything that hasn't already been covered or been on the X-Files, I guess, is the question there. Absolutely, yeah. Okay, let me ask you this, though. Let's say it's a man-sized frog. Yeah. We're nailing down the man-sized frog movie. Scary or funny?
Starting point is 01:16:30 Which do you want? Oh, I want both. Like you see it walk and you're like, and then it's on you, though. Wow. You know? But I mean overall time. So he's trying to borrow money. Hello.
Starting point is 01:16:42 You got 50 bucks. Just to borrow. Yeah. I'll get back to you on Tuesday. I got some money coming in on Tuesday. You never have any money to be a big frog, you moocher. That's why it's so scary because you can relate to it because there's always a moocher in your life.
Starting point is 01:16:58 Absolutely. So it just varies, giant birds and bat creatures and variations on Bigfoot. Have any of these ever proven to be true? I mean, because some of these are in here are true. It's like the Tasmanian tiger. But it's like that was a real thing that went extinct. Like some of these are creatures that, yeah, that were real.
Starting point is 01:17:22 That's true. Anyway, good stuff. We've got a tweet here, Mason. Go on. It says, what is it? It's from Hack Ripjaw who says, Mason, please give us a hint for next week's Caravan of Garbage. It's the key word to disarm the bomb and they're going to kill my wife.
Starting point is 01:17:38 Now, in the latest Caravan of Garbage, you shot down the idea of giving a hint towards next week. It's up to you to decide. Tell people. I don't know what we're doing next week. I can't remember. I don't know what water we record these in. I know we've recorded some stuff recently, but I can't remember if we recorded some stuff before that.
Starting point is 01:17:54 So I don't know. There's no way of knowing. Do you want me to tell people? Sure, if you want to. We're doing Robocop. Yeah. We're doing four Robocop movies. Oh.
Starting point is 01:18:03 That's right. Oh, I forgot about the remake. Yeah, that's right. I reckon the remake's all right from memory. All right. So, yeah, no, we're Robocop. We're Robocop-ing it. Okay.
Starting point is 01:18:13 Army Mason. Hey, James, here's an email from someone whose name I shan't be revealing. Okay. Because they've signed an NDA. Whoa, okay. And they have said, I worked on Secret Invasion and I see how it costs so much. Oh.
Starting point is 01:18:26 This is the stuff, James. This is the juice, baby. Have you just come across this? No, I had it from earlier. Oh. Yeah. Should I open with this? I mean, I like the one about the creatures,
Starting point is 01:18:35 but I mean, we could have opened the show with this. Could have opened the show with this. We'll tell you what. We'll add some stuff at the start where we go skip all the boring stuff. Big stuff at the end. We got some big goss. We've got some hot goss at the end. But this keeps people listening because just randomly
Starting point is 01:18:48 might be like actually there's a big thing at the end. That's right. I mean I haven't heard this yet. If people could go in a great mate's Facebook group and say, hey, folks, I know you're going to want to jump off this episode early, but you should stick around because there's some hot goss at the end. So hot.
Starting point is 01:19:02 Some very hot goss. Yeah. So this person says, last year I worked for a couple of days in the uk on marvel secret invasion it was a great time and i was excited to see the show but as far as i could tell not a single frame of the on location footage shot while i was there actually made it on screen oh my god uh now it's definitely not that those scenes were eventually deemed unnecessary i actually watched them film gaia being shot by Gravik then coming back to life.
Starting point is 01:19:27 The twist is this, it was in a completely different location and under what seemed to be totally different circumstances to how it was presented in the actual show, meaning they scrapped that version of the scene and re-filmed it. Why? There were also entire sets that never made it to screen at all. Personally, I was really excited to see the series tell the epic tale of Talos' caravan.
Starting point is 01:19:48 Now, to be fair, at one stage they did construct a massive blue screen, so it's possible some of that got through, but they certainly didn't need to shut down an expensive public place to do that. This was during the original shooting period, so the whole experience really supports the idea that the entire show was reworked from the bare bones,
Starting point is 01:20:04 keeping the basic beats but changing everything around them. These mid-shooting script changes would also explain how the show attracted such major talent when the material ended up being so poor. That makes sense. Livia Coleman and the like. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It was a long while ago, but across talent, camera, location security, catering COVID, I would estimate there were maybe 100 people working a day
Starting point is 01:20:23 in expensive outdoor locations and pretty much everything was binned off. We even worked several hours of overtime at one stage, which significantly increases pay, and from what I could tell, this seemed to be a semi-regular occurrence. On top of that, I know there's been jokes about the catering budget, but it was genuinely the most decadent food I've ever had on a set. They literally served swordfish and steak as the evening meal
Starting point is 01:20:43 on the final day. Oh, my God. Still, I had a lovely time. Oh, my God. Yeah. Still, I had a lovely time myself. Yeah, sounds like it. Yeah. There you go. Thanks for the great work.
Starting point is 01:20:52 Amelia Clark seemed lovely. Ben Mendelsohn walked around the set with music blurring from a speaker painted like a Union Jack and shaped like a British bulldog. He would have bought it on the airport on the way in. Yeah. No doubt. That's really funny. There you go.
Starting point is 01:21:04 Okay. That's big drama, James. Well, really funny. There you go. Okay. That's big drama, James. Well, that explains a lot of that. Doesn't it, though? I mean, unless this is a big lie, but that Union Jack thing makes me – it's too specific. Too specific, right? It's probably real.
Starting point is 01:21:14 That's right. Wow, that's really interesting. If you have any emails about why things are the way they are. We love it. Because we don't – that's the thing. We don't know. No, we don't know. And we've talked about in the past how much we enjoy
Starting point is 01:21:27 like the old Disney documentaries for like Iron Man or whatever where it's like, we don't know what we're doing. It's nuts. And we don't get that anymore. Something comes out and we're like, how? Why? Yeah, because Disney. Who did this?
Starting point is 01:21:39 I think Disney want to keep it secretive so it looks like it's just magic coming out of the house of magic or whatever. Which is ludicrous. I want to know the dirt. I want to know the dirt and I want to see like. I want to know you hadive so it looks like it's just magic coming out of the house of magic or whatever. Which is ludicrous. I want to know the dirt. I want to know the dirt and I want to see like I want to know you had a bad time. Exactly. I want to, I'm excited for all the documentaries and biographies and tell-alls
Starting point is 01:21:54 10 years, 15 years in the future where it's just like this is what really happened in all these sets. Yeah. It's all like gross stuff. Absolutely, yeah. I wanted to mention, I'm not going to read the whole thing but there was a user on the Weekly Planet Reddit called Kaidru Key gross stuff. Absolutely, yeah. I wanted to mention, I'm not going to read the whole thing, but there was a user on the weekly planet Reddit called Kydru Key who basically talked about their struggles with mental health over the years.
Starting point is 01:22:15 And basically it's a very nice post about what they've been through and how we basically helped them come out of this situation. And there's even a moment where they, you know, they say they thank us personally and even say that we would say that they did them themselves, did that themselves, which we, which we can't say because they've got ahead of us and said that. So, you know, thanks for heading us off there. But no, I just wanted to say really glad you're doing better. It's just such a genuinely nice post, especially because like a lot of the time, you know, I do this and I'm like, what am I doing?
Starting point is 01:22:46 Sure. This is my job. I have to tell people I do this for a living. You should make up a lie. I used to. I used to be like, I'm a teacher. It's been too long now. That's true.
Starting point is 01:22:55 I can't lie anymore. They'd be like, boy, sure is annoying filling out those new reports, isn't it? And you'd be like, yeah. And they'd be like, you're a liar. There are no new reports. It's always been the same reports. You're a liar. It would beat you up in the street. Exactly. So it was just a real, it was just nice to see somebody, uh, just doing so well. And we had like a, like a hand in that. So it was a really lovely post. And also just, there's like
Starting point is 01:23:17 a bunch of comments under it where people are just being very nice and being like, it's a good community. We try to keep it positive. That's right. And it works often, but not always. And if you're not positive, you're out. We'll fucking boot you,
Starting point is 01:23:30 mate. We don't care. Yeah, that's right. Kick fucking rocks. You're out. I'm pointing at you, mate.
Starting point is 01:23:39 What's next? Oh, here's one more email. This is from Robert. Robert says, I've never watched any of these movies, but heard recently the latest Bring It On movie, Bring It On, Cheer or Die, is a horror movie.
Starting point is 01:23:49 Oh, okay. I thought you talked about that last week, didn't we? We did, yeah. We couldn't think of anything. But there's that. Someone said Indiana Jones. Okay, sure. Because Temple of Doom.
Starting point is 01:23:57 Even House of Prey or whatever, it's kind of a horror movie. This is a series. Yeah. But I thought of it afterwards. Riverdale, of course. Oh, of course. As a teen drama, and then it went every insane possibility. Did everything.
Starting point is 01:24:06 There's so many serial killers. Serial killers and superheroes and werewolves and vampires and shirtless cage fighting and whatever else you can think of that series turned into. Loved it. Again, I would love a tell-all book after that. After Riverdale? Yeah, after that.
Starting point is 01:24:23 I think it's finished now. It has, yeah. I've been in contact with somebody who writes on that show. Oh, Archie Andrews? No, maybe not writes. There's something on it. Who knows? Archie Andrews.
Starting point is 01:24:32 That's Archie Andrews. Dilton Doily? Yeah, it's pretty interesting. Boy genius, Dilton Doily? Yes, boy genius, Dilton Doily. One more here. Jughead's dog, Hot Dog? Yes, Hot Dog, the Jughead dog.
Starting point is 01:24:44 Who goes on adventures? He goes on adventures? He's got a dog house? He's super powerful? Genius Dilton Doily. One more here. Jughead's dog, Hot Dog. Yes, Hot Dog, the Jughead dog. He goes on adventures. He's got a dog house. There's superpowers. He's like Perry the Platypus. Yeah. Yeah. You don't know what that is. No.
Starting point is 01:24:54 Were you in contact with Archie 3000? The robot? No, Archie from the future. No. Oh, wow. Wait, is it the same Archie? No, it's his descendant. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 01:25:02 Why is he called 3000? He's from the year 3000. I don't think his last name's Archie 3000. His name's not Archie, Archie 3000? No, it's his descendant. Oh my God. Why is he called 3000? I don't think his last name's Archie 3000. His name's not Archie Archie 3000? No. Okay, fair enough. You got a letter here? Oh yeah. Last one. A tweet here, sorry, from MCM who says, have you boys watched Toast of London
Starting point is 01:25:15 and your thoughts? Maybe an episode on British sitcoms. Ranking Yorkshire puddings. Good. Yorkshire dudding? Bad. Oh, I love Toast of London. I haven't seen the most recent because there's a season where he goes to America. I haven't seen that either. I I love Toast of London I haven't seen the most recent because there's a season where he goes to America yeah I haven't seen that one
Starting point is 01:25:28 I haven't seen that either I also love Toast of London and whenever I get sad you can watch that Clem Fandango supercut on YouTube that's true which is really fun
Starting point is 01:25:36 yeah cool anything else or is that the show I think that's the whole show unless I can think of another supernatural being no obscure character
Starting point is 01:25:43 from the Archie Professor Flute Snoot did you speak to Professor Flute Sno character from the Archie. Veronica? Professor Flute Snoot. Did you speak to Professor Flute Snoot? How much Archie did you rate as a kid? All of it. Oh, my God. It was like a trillion back then.
Starting point is 01:25:52 And it was just all you could get like they would do like old reprints of the old stuff and then like new stuff. And it's all exactly the same because the art style is all exactly the same except the clothing is different. Like there's no sweater vests in the present day. Absolutely. Maybe there is now though. Maybe there might be now, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 01:26:10 It's come back around, you know what I mean? Cool stuff. Woo! What's next? Perhaps a flute snoot? I don't know. Principal Weatherby? Did you speak to Principal Weatherby?
Starting point is 01:26:19 That one's real. I thought you – yeah. Yeah. Oh, that's right. I forgot what this was about. You're asking me who I was speaking to. Did you speak to Archie's RC races, a really obscure comic book where they went around America with remote-controlled cars,
Starting point is 01:26:34 some sort of really jumping on a trend? Did you speak to that comic book specifically? I didn't speak to that comic book. No, I haven't. And even if I could, I couldn't tell you. Okay, because they probably signed an NDA, Archie's RC Races. Absolutely. Okay, right.
Starting point is 01:26:48 Folks, that's a whole show. That's a show. Thank you so much for listening. We very much appreciate it. Starting point is 01:27:11 Brilliant. It says, I feel seen. I love these boys, me meaning to leave a review for a while now, but after the most recent episode, I knew it was time. James has ran to the end of the past week's episode about wanting to kick the guy that from MrBeast's video made me feel seen. My son is eight and constantly watching these dumb videos and I can't tell you how many times
Starting point is 01:27:27 I wanted to kick one of them. Very relatable. Anyways, keep up the great work, five stars. And this one is from Tom from Cleveland who says, teacher versus McBeast. Says, James, as a teacher myself, I get your anxiety regarding the YouTube celebrity persona. It's literally the kid acting up in class because they didn't do their homework. There's a bit of that, isn't there? Like an annoying thing happening. That's right. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 01:27:51 Absolutely. Folks, if you want to get into contact with us. I believe, just quickly, that that thing about when you get famous, you just stay that age. Oh, yeah, absolutely. I think it's true of a bunch of – because you watch some YouTube people and it's like, I'm 28. Yeah, or Twitch people, yeah.
Starting point is 01:28:06 It's like, why do you like this? And it's like, oh, because you got famous when you were 17. That's right, yeah. So, you know, you've just – that's you. Thank God we got famous when we were 25 and remained 25. That's exactly right. And by famous we mean – Whatever this is.

Starting point is 01:29:43 Yeah. That's right. We've got everything next week, a different topic. That's right. We might probably do a topic topic. I was trying to look for a post that somebody put in the great mates group and there was a few of them that were like, they should do this topic. And there was a few of them like, oh, we should do that.
Starting point is 01:29:56 And I cannot find the post for the life of me. So if someone wants to do another one of those, that would be great. If somebody could just know inherently that that's the one you were thinking of. Which one I wanted to do. Say that was me and here it is again. Yeah. Might have even responded to it. I can't remember. But I remember thinking, I'll write that down. I won't need to write it down because I'll remember it. Absolutely. Idiot.
Starting point is 01:30:15 I'm an idiot, Mason. Anyways, thanks everybody. Grab that gem, you guys. We'll see you next week. Goodbye. Bye. Did you speak to Pop Tate? Pop Tate? The chocolate shopper. Oh, is he doing a thing still? Also Andrew Tate's dad.
Starting point is 01:30:31 I probably wouldn't talk to him. Yeah, you probably wouldn't. If you wanted to reach out. It's not kind of a world I want to embroil myself in. I understand, sure. You know? It seems complicated and bad. Absolutely.
