Life and death were two very realistic coexisting possibilities in my life.
I didn't even think I'd make it to like my 16th birthday to be honest.
I grew up being scared of who I was.

Welcome back everybody to another episode of the Weekly Planet where we talk movies
and comics and TV shows.
My name is James, also known as Mr. Sunday and with me as always, that's my curse Nick
Mason.
We're here. We forgot the drinks. Oh yeah. Do you want to get the drinks now?
Nah.
You want to take a minute?
We'll take a break. We'll get it.
Okay. That's good, man.
It's a hot day.
It's a hot day.
So that's ironic, isn't it?
Yeah.
We're frazzled from the heat.
Yeah, man.
And if anything, we could really use a frosty, a frosted bevy.
You can go and get a frosted bevy.
You're just talking about it so much.
People don't care. Just get it.
No, no, it's fine.
The podcast will proceed normally and I won't be obsessed with a cool frosted bevy you're just talking about it so much. People don't care just get it. No, it's fine. The podcast will proceed normally and I won't be obsessed with a
cool frosted bevy. Okay we just took an editing pause there. No we didn't.
For 10 minutes and Mason didn't get a frosted bevy. He had every opportunity to.
No, it's not true. He even said James here's some money. No. For all the bevy's that I've been drinking.
Check the meta data. There was no editing, There was no pause. I'm so thirsty, James.
You won't let me get a drink.
You had your moment.
Yeah.
This week, Mason.
There'll be a lot of like noises.
Yeah, there will be.
Yeah.
So no change there then?
No, same regular as usual.
Because we're going to hear about the latest trailers and news and I'm going to go...
Hello Mason.
Yum yum.
Yum yum.
Well, we're going to be talking about...
I'm eating them up.
Are you?
Yeah. Wicked part one. Oh yeah. Talk about that. Well we're gonna be talking about Wicked
part one. Talk about that but we've got some news in the lead up. A whole bunch
of DCU stuff including like the timeline of when things are coming out, some
casting, what's happening with... is it casting? Yeah there's gonna be some
casting for maybe Daniel Craig something. Oh that's right. We're gonna
talk about Kevin Feige, how he's talking about when the X-Men are coming into the Marvel universe,
et cetera.
Soon, he says.
And there's so many trailers.
There's a few trailers.
We've got Alien Earth.
We've got Minecraft.
It's more a teaser, isn't it?
It is, really.
We've got a Minecraft something.
We're going to talk briefly about Alio and the bad guys too,
how to train your dragon, but real.
And then we're going to talk about the rock on set wearing a muscle suit
for Moana.
That's interesting, isn't it?
Uh-huh. Uh-huh. You can pee right into muscle suit for Moana. That's interesting, isn't it?
You can pee right into that. Oh yeah, that's true, isn't it?
Probably what it is.
If anything, it'll make his muscles look even bigger.
Exactly.
You know, because it's made of that condom material.
So like it fills with the way it swells up.
Does a condom do that?
I think so.
I got some work to do.
I got some things to think about.
You got some self-reflection there.
Not me though.
You knew.
Yeah, I know.
But before we get into it, I went on an episode of Thumb Cramps, which is an amazing video
game podcast.
I've done two before.
I did two with Joel and Jackson, who of course hosted over at Sans Pants.
That's right.
It was in the UK.
I went on for the one that came out on Friday.
We talk about different video games. I talk about my experiences on Star Wars Outlaws and it's just a very fun and silly video game
podcast.
I listened to it.
I highly recommend it.
It's very good and those guys are a lot of fun.
A couple of nice boys.
You also don't need to know a hell of a lot about video games or even like current video
games because it's what they've been playing.
For example.
I was on once and I don't know anything.
They were like, do you play any video games this week?
And I'm like, no.
They said, we don't care.
Yeah.
Well, Joel talked about playing the original Silent Hill.
Oh, yeah.
And his experience with that.
And playing on the PS Vita actually.
My goodness.
So anyway, that'll be linked below.
It's an awesome show.
You should listen to it.
I also have some live shows coming out, but I think they're sold out.
They are sold out.
Yeah, well, I got a ticket.
I also got a ticket.
Which one are you going to?
The second one.
Which is the first one?
Yes.
Which is the Wednesday night one?
Because they released the first one and all sold out.
Yep.
So you got one to the second one.
That's correct.
That's the one I'm going to.
Well, I'll see you there.
I'll see you there.
All right.
All right.
We could go together.
We could go separately.
Yes.
We could sit separately.
We could storm the stage.
We could storm the stage. Yeah. So separately. Yes. We could sit separately.
We could storm the stage.
We could storm the stage.
Yeah.
So Mr. Ads is going to be there.
I don't want to spoil it, but it's going to be very exciting.
Alright Mason, time grades are below if you're doing a jump ahead.
You can't.
You have to sit through it.
I have to sit through the whole thing.
This is via Collider.
It's a DCU.
That's a DC cinematic universe.
Do you think Collider have some sort of sting where they go, movie stuff, other stuff, Collider.
Oh, they should.
They should.
They could use that.
Yeah.
They can use that.
Not for free, obviously.
I think they fired most people at Collider at one point.
And I can come in as a consultant.
Yeah.
You know?
They can't just take that idea, can they?
No, absolutely not.
Yeah.
Movie stuff, popcorn, interviews.
That's right.
Sticky floors. behind the scenes collider
collider they're all colliding and stuff all collider there's a guy who explains
it is he explains the sting in case you don't get it I didn't get it
imagine all the stuff it's colliding yeah I went there I went to the
headquarters oh been in there nice significantly less people there now do
you open the door and then like two really big like wooden stakes spring out of the wall?
Like Indiana Jones.
Like an Ewoks.
It was an Ewok trap set for me.
Nice.
Anyways, James Gunn talked about the timeline of things and Batman entering the DC.
He was on some sort of, I don't know what he was doing.
He was out and about.
It was a pod.
He did a podcast as well, I think, but it was, you know, like a proper podcast where
they have cameras.
Oh wow.
Like a proper podcast. I don't know. I don't know anything about that. He said, there's no podcast, you know, where they have cameras. Oh wow, yeah, yeah. Like a proper podcast.
I don't know about that.
He said, there's no timeline.
There's no set timeline for anything.
The only thing that I've tried to make clear to people from the beginning in the way that
I hope we're different is that everything in DC is going to be based on the writers
until we have a screenplay that I'm totally happy with.
That movie is not going to get made no matter what.
I think that's-
A blade model.
Yeah.
Isn't that interesting?
Yeah. I mean, we kind of knew he was he was doing this but doesn't necessarily guarantee a good movie
That's true, which is to be like this script is fairly. Yeah dynamite as they say in Hollywood
And let's make this one. Yeah, that's great. They're not like locked in like we've announced nine projects
Then when they announced the Simon Kinberg this script is dynamite
Is it that's what he says? Is it?
You think so based on what me this is mine You understand this is one of my scripts
You okay. All right, can I direct it?
I mean, you know the movie I directed right?
You know, I directed a directed Dark Phoenix, you know
I'll do it
I feel like I'm talking myself out of this but I'll
do it I'll do it I'll go now can you can I sign a thing now and then I'll go yeah
do you remember the initial days this is years ago this would have been like 2015
2016 the DCEU which is like the Snyder verse slate that was like some of them
got through like Wonder Woman or whatever but it was like land like
Green Lantern cyborgs, The Flash, eventually.
We did get it.
Black Adam eventually.
Black Adam eventually.
I don't know if that one was announced.
Anyway, he said, it's going to be based always on that, on story, because at the end of the
day, if we're happy with the story that we're telling, that's what matters most.
And once the Brave and the Bold gets to that point, then we'll make the movie.
And was Andy Machete still directing the Brave and the Bold gets to that point, then we'll make the movie. And was Andy Machete still directing the Brave and the Bold?
He's on board, but I would say maybe not.
Maybe.
I don't know.
Unless enough time has passed that people have forgotten that he's directed The Flash.
I mean, did he direct that?
And also, I think he is a good director.
I think he did really well with the It franchise and probably other things.
The Flash is just like, there was nine directors deep and 17 scripts.
I mean based on the id franchise, you know, it'll serve him well because we're gonna have a bunch of scenes where like Batman and Robin
like surround like the Mad Hatter who's on the ground and they just kick him.
Kick the absolute tar out of him.
Hit him with crowbars and such.
Yeah, exactly. So he said, this is the order of things coming out. They said this to IGN. Creature Commandos, which is animated. Oh yeah, exactly. So he said, this is the order of things coming out.
They said this to IGN.
Creature Commandos, which is animated.
Oh, yeah, nice.
Is that late this year?
Early next year?
It's soon, whatever it is.
Superman's after that.
That'll be like mid next year.
I've heard of it.
Peacemaker, season two, which is also a reboot, which we'll talk about sort of.
Oh, yeah.
Then Lantens, and then Supergirl, which is middle of 2026.
So it's interesting that they're going to get Lantens out, it looks like, before Supergirl which is middle of 2026. So it's interesting that they're gonna get Lantons out
It looks like before Supergirl. Yeah, I
Really like this lineup. Yeah. Well, I mean the Superman trailer they reckoned I think I saw 20th of December for the trailer
Maybe I don't know it's coming soon though
And Frank Grillo talked about it this week and he was like a goose bumps. He said he'd got goose bumps
I'm goose with bumps. He said that's what he said. Which is what we say in my hometown where I'm from.
Where are you from? Grillo land. Grillo land? Yeah. Is that Frank Grillo land or is this
unrelated? No, it's his, all his family's from there. Oh, you're from? It's like Michigan
land. Okay. It's all Grillo's. And you? Yes. Okay. All right. That's good, I guess. Yeah.
That must have been hard for you growing up because they're all ripped and cool and in Yes. Okay. All right. That's good, I guess. Yeah.
That must have been hard for you growing up because they're all ripped and cool and in
movies and then it's you.
Ripped and cool, but I'm not in any movies yet.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Oh, and then I don't even want to be in movies.
Yeah, I know.
And then he said, and then some things people don't know.
Got a few secrets up your sleeve.
James Gunn.
Yeah.
And he also said there's something along the lines of in terms of continuity, somebody asked him about like what's in continuity and what's not.
I have that here.
He was basically just like, we're just going to do some good stories. If you want stuff
to be in continuity, it can be.
Yeah. And also like they talked about like, is it going to be comic accurate? And he's
like, well, which comic? What does it mean? What does that mean? Because comics are very...
A lot of comics are not comic accurate or, comic accurate or tied to particular continuities or whatever.
He was pretty much like, we're sticking to what we think is the core elements of the
character. That's as good as you can do, really, I think.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's exactly right.
Yeah. I also spoke to Rolling Stone because he was talking about Peacemaker Season 2 this
week and what's canon. And basically, one of the few things that is rolling over into
this universe is some of the stuff he worked on, including some of Peacemaker.
And he said, the truth is almost all of Peacemaker is canon with the exception of the Justice
League, which we kind of deal with in the next season.
So at the end of Peacemaker season one, the Justice League show up.
Too late.
Too late.
And it's only Ezra Miller and Jason Momoa who are actually there.
So that is not canon, but the rest is.
But I'm going to imagine Peacemaker remembers it maybe or...
Yeah.
Because of a special helmet he has or...
Probably because of his special helmet.
Because he's insane.
He had his multiverse or protection helmet on.
I'm sure people are upset about this or whatever that like, what you're only making the things
canon that you made.
Well yeah, it's his universe and he can't...
Also Peacemaker, good.
It was good.
That's exactly right.
So maybe a good thing can be in the universe.
And I think it's good that they cut out the Justice League.
Or not good.
Do you think it's good they cut out the post credits of Shazam 2 where they meet him in
an abandoned gas station or something?
What?
The end of Shazam 2 they go to meet him in an abandoned...
In the woods and he's zapping bottles or something?
The Task Force X guys.
Yeah. Yeah. No, that should stay in. Yeah zapping bottles? The Task Force X guys. Yeah.
Yeah.
No, that should stay in.
Yeah, you reckon?
I think so, yeah.
And he's still out there.
Still out there.
Oh, they don't kill him?
Yeah, they're like, we've got a special mission for you, Shazam.
Just stay here and shoot all those bottles.
They're a threat to democracy and the multiverse.
Yeah.
So you wouldn't want those bottles to take over the multiverse.
If you run out of bottles, well, don't worry about it.
Just don't worry about it.
Just don't even, just sit here and wait for a delivery of more bottles.
There'll be bottles, yeah.
So yeah, he basically, yeah, so he confirmed that yeah, everything is, basically everything
is canon, he said this later, except the Justice League and a couple of other things.
So it's not just that.
And nothing can be considered pure DC canon until Creature Commandos.
Which is, again, soon.
Let me just find out the release date of that.
Commandos release date. You have a new version of Siri where you have to sing
everything. You have to sing well? No. Good. This is via Deadline. Oh yeah. They
said Daniel Craig. Deadline. Is that your one idea?
I've just realized that that's your one idea.
I could think of a second idea.
What about it's a ring ring.
Hello.
You're dead.
Deadline.
The animation though.
Um, a man, is it a line in it?
They shoveled.
There's a very old, no, there's a very old man in a hospital bed and he's clearly
not long for the world and, and, and, and a nurse very sadly brings a hospital bed and he's clearly not long for the world.
And a nurse very sadly brings a black phone.
Oh no.
And it rings and he picks it up and it goes, you're dead.
And he goes, aww.
Then it goes deadline.
The phone says that?
Somebody does.
Or he says it.
The WWE wrestling announcer guy comes in and he says deadline.
I think that would work.
Can he say let's get ready to deadline?
You could say that, yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Great.
And then the EKG meter or whatever goes beep.
That's a flat line, but whatever.
Yeah.
I'm not here to mess up your great idea.
No, I mean, you know, it's just flavor.
Yeah, it is flavor. Yeah.
So Daniel Craig looks like he's going to be joining forces
with Challenger's director, Luca.
How do you say this guy's name?
I say Guadagnino, but it's probably not correct.
Yeah, it's hard.
That's the fun way to say it.
It's a fun one.
I reckon if you met him and you went,
hey, it's Luca Guadagnino, he'd be like, yeah, that's good.
Yeah, good enough.
He said they're looking to reunite for DC's Sergeant Rock.
That's interesting.
A movie.
A movie?
Sergeant Rock, what's his deal?
He's a World War II guy.
Yeah.
I look, I mean, I do not know a lot about Sergeant Rock, but I imagine they could tie
it in with any kind of, you know, weird.
They could do World War II, but weird stuff is happening.
Yeah. They could do- Often they'll do Justice League, but World War II. Yeah, yeah, yeah, weird. They could do World War II but weird stuff is happening. Yeah. They could do...
Often they'll do Justice League but World War II.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Or maybe he meets other Green Lanterns in World War II or whatever.
You know?
They'll wait on the Green Lanterns.
Certainly true, yes.
Yeah.
Does he survive to the modern day? Is he one of those dudes?
Is he like a Nick Fury?
I don't think so, but I think he's one of those guys where sometimes people will be pulled out of time and then he's there as well.
We'd need you, Sgt. Rock.
Sgt. Rock, an easy company. There you go.
Yeah. Sgt. Rock, we'd need you. There's a crypto scam in the year 2027.
What the hell are you saying?
What are you talking about?
Are you a Ruskie? I'll shoot you.
Yeah, you might. Yeah.
I like this. It also means Daniel Craig doesn't have to put on a big uniform.
It's true.
Or get shirtless, presumably.
Now is this, this is, this is deadline, of course.
Deadline.
Deadline.
Deadline.
Beep.
Hello. Hello. You're dead.
See, it's catchy, isn't it?
Oh.
Yeah. Yeah, that's right. Yeah.
And I think people like-
Let's get ready to deadline.
Uh.
This is good stuff.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
What were you saying, So?
Is this, this is confirmed?
Is this is...
It says it's not a done deal.
Okay.
But if he does do it, it'll come before his American Psycho remake.
Okay.
Because this is sort of, you know, this is one of those ones where it sort of feels a little bit out of left field and you,
and like on the face of it you question it you go okay well.
That's like Quentin Tarantino is doing Star Trek.
Oh is he?
Is he really?
You know we you know and Luke not so much but the idea of like well Daniel Craig is
he gonna jump into another big franchise?
You know.
He might do one.
He might do one exactly.
Can I stay in World War Two?
Yeah.
Yeah.
No you have to do the movie where you look at crypto scams.
Yeah that's right. Yeah. It's just you could say you know it's just a war. It's one. No, you have to do the movie where you look at crypto scams. Yeah, that's right.
You could say it's just a war movie.
It's one, if it's good, you can do another one if you want.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
No, I like that their focus again is like,
let's see if we can make some good movies
and who cares how it really ties together.
Oh, I think at one point,
remember when Lex Luthor became the president?
Yeah.
He was the chief of staff during Lex Luthor's administration.
Cool.
That's good. Good role to get. Must be nice.
Whether it was the real Frank Rock in disguise, his name's Frank Rock, or an imposter is unknown.
Okay. The series concludes with the line, Frank Rock died in 1945. Okay. So look, yeah, I'm going
to guess it's going to be weird tales of World War II. Something like that. Like an overlord
situation, something like that.
Well, if it is in this first chapter of the DCU, it is gods and monsters.
So it would be something like that.
Oh, you know what it might be?
We also might have, it might tie in with creature commandos.
We get GI robots.
Oh, that would be great.
GI robot, maybe Frankenstein's in World War II.
That happens sometimes.
Yeah, cool.
Okay.
That's great.
Yeah, I'm going to guess if this is in fact real and he's going ahead.
And you know, it could very well go ahead in some form, even if those two aren't involved.
Yeah.
You know, you get Frank Grillo.
Yeah.
You know, you get different guy.
Frank Grillo.
Simon Kinberg and Frank Grillo.
That's a good team up.
That's right.
The ultimate duo.
Anyway, weird World War II, that's my guess.
I love a weird World War II.
Deadline Mason again.
You want to do it or?
No, I think people are going to do it in their heads.
They can see it.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
They can see it.
The specter of death.
It's great stuff.
Mason, but it's in a phone.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Kevin Feige was asked about-
I'm afraid, sir, the news is not good.
Deadline.
Beep.
Oh, ring ring. Oh. oh, I don't I've lost. I lost you on that one.
I don't know what it was. Different stuff happens every time. Okay. It's sad and it
goes for too long. That's how it works. So it's life. Yeah. Great. That's right. Kevin
Feige spoke to Deadline about the X-Men coming in. He said Avengers Secret Wars, however,
will be the gateway that brings mutants into the MCU. Right after that, the whole story of Secret Wars.
It opens with a big sigh from Kevin Feige. He looks around to like the other people.
He's like, can you believe they're asking me this again? Yes, Secret Wars.
They're coming in.
No, this is more specific. Right after that, the whole story of Secret Wars really leads
us into a new age of mutants and of the X-Men. It's one of those dreams come true.
We finally have the X-Men back.
It's been a while now.
Fiky.
Yeah, come on.
But yeah, that makes sense.
Secret Wars and then they're bringing in the battle world and merging dimensions, I assume.
Or they're already here because of previous dimensional shifts or the blip or something.
I don't know.
Or they've always been here.
They've always been in hiding.
Maybe school just tucked away in various places. the blip or something. I don't know man. Oh, they've always been here. They've always been in hiding. Maybe some like that, yeah.
Just tucked away in...
Exactly, yeah.
Places, various places.
Yeah, mind camouflage.
Yeah.
I've said this before, but like having access to all the X-Men, they could just pivot really
hard into that.
That's true.
Just be like, this is the new...
Forget everything else.
Yeah.
Whatever's not working, we're just doing X-Men.
Yeah.
And Fantastic Four. And given that they have lost, you know..., you know, Chris Evans and Hemsworth and all these guys who
are sort of in semi-retirement.
You know, it might be good to just go, we're doing X-Men now.
As opposed to trying to, as opposed to trying to recast the originals or bring in
equivalents that people don't like as much, seemingly.
It might be a safer bet to just jump in with the X-Men you know. Completely agree.
Trailers are hype! Honk! All right we got little little stings for everything
don't we? That's right. First one we got... We don't Collider and Deadline have their stings now.
We got this one, we got this one. That's true. Yeah. Alien Earth! Sorry there's a phone call for you. Ring ring. Hello? Honk. Trailer's a hoooly!
It's like blasting you to the air sideways. Yeah. I can live again! No! That's not what this is.
Wow. I was trying to give the listeners a happy ending there. No! You're still gonna die. Soon too.
Alien Earth Mason. quick teaser trailer.
We get some little sneak peeks at some aliens or some ugly men, who's to say?
Both.
There's not a lot here in the trailer, but I got a synopsis and a timeline.
I'd love to hear a synopsis.
So when a mysterious space vessel crash lands on Earth, a young woman, Sydney Chandler.
Look out, there's a vessel coming.
Where? Alien babies. Yeah, sure, Sydney Sharla. Look out, there's a vessel coming! Where?
Alien babies.
Yeah, sure, sure, sure.
An arraged, tagged group of tactical soldiers make a fateful discovery that puts them face
to face with the planet's greatest threat as members of the Crash Recovery crew.
We were tough guys, but actually that's tougher as well.
We're scared.
Our recovery crews search for survivors among the wreckage, they encounter mysterious prisoners.
These are clips from the teaser by the way.
Oh, okay.
We're scared.
We're scared.
We're scared.
I thought this gun would help, but it sort of does, but it's not.
I need more stuff or I need to leave.
The account of mysterious predatory life forms, more terrifying, etc.
With this new threat unlocked, the search crew must fight for survival and they choose
to, etc.
They got to save Earth also.
Yeah, nice.
Okay.
This is set in the year 2020. Okay, this is... Sorry, no, that was previous. 2120. 2120. Prometheus is
set in... Because 2020 has already happened. That's right. Prometheus is set in 2093.
Okay. Alien is set in 2122. So this is before alien. Just before alien. Okay right. Yeah.
So this continuity, I think we've discussed this before, but this continuity is suggesting
Aliens have made it to Earth before.
That's right.
Before.
Because we never see Earth-Earth in the Alien franchise.
We haven't till this point.
Just in the post credits of the deleted scene, sort of Alien Resurrection.
So I mean, you know, maybe this is the big revelation of this series that, you know,
by the time Ripley
is battling aliens in her movies, Earth has already been overrun by aliens.
Maybe it sucks now.
It does sucks.
Or maybe it's great now.
Well, there's a question for you though.
No, it doesn't because she goes back an alien.
You're an alien?
She's an alien.
Sorry.
And then no one's like Earth is overrun by aliens.
Oh, that's true.
They would have mentioned it, wouldn't they?
But you know, people are going to say to you, Mason, and I bet you're ready with an answer
because you're always quick with a joke, etc. Oh, that's true. They would have mentioned it wouldn't they? But you know people are gonna say to you Mason, and I bet you're ready with an answer, because you're always quick with a joke, etc.
Oh yeah.
Well the alien-
He says very positively.
Yeah, yeah, it's good. It's real skill.
It takes a genuine effort.
Thanks man.
The alien predator movies are set on Earth.
They are, it's true. But that's maybe a separate continuity.
It is a separate continuity. Good answer. I knew you'd be quick with a joke.
That's right.
I knew it. I knew I could rely on you. Oh sorry, that's a separate continuity. It is a separate continuity. Good answer. I knew you'd be quick with a joke. That's right. I knew it.
I knew I could rely on you. I'm sorry.
That's a separate continuity.
All you dumb asses.
That's just-
Ring ring.
You're all dumb asses.
I said it's not a joke.
I mean, it can be both.
Yeah.
I know Hawley's doing this.
Yeah.
We did Legion.
Very excited.
This comes out in the summer of 2025.
Nice.
How do you feel about that?
Good.
Good.
We've also got a trailer for a
Minecraft movie trailer too.
I want people to know that the first trailer was bad and this is a better trailer maybe.
Yeah.
I mean, having no connection in any way to Minecraft, I thought it was a better trailer.
Definitely a better trailer.
There was also a behind the scenes feature which showed a lot of this is actually real.
They built real sets and stuff because that first trailer didn't feel like anything had happened.
Oh, that's true. So yeah, I think this will be Jumanji Minecraft World or whatever. Yeah, but with... Or Super Mario, whatever.
Yeah, it's got, you know, they're sort of leaning pretty heavily into here's the actual mechanics of the game and you can mine things and create things with you.
Anything your mind can imagine. Anything your mind can imagine. Do you think there's going to be a moment where they touch a block
and then they all turn into blocks and they go,
this is too much even for us.
And then they turn back.
Because that would be too much for me, the viewer,
and I would burn the cinema to the ground.
You think they're ready for that?
They don't want that?
Okay, we might be right, Mason.
There might be too much.
But I mean, the fact that you've put that as a possibility into my mind,
I am going to bring my fire making tools to the cinema
Okay, that's great. I'll be ready to go. I'm ready. Okay also
Yeah, mmm any any any moment where it seems like they might be heading that way. You'll hear the Zippo click
Oh, you get a Zippo. Yeah, I got a Zippo. What are you feeling? I'm up with
Kerosene. Yeah, kerosene like kerosene fueled Zippo. Yeah, how often you have to fill up a Zippo all the time
Yeah, that's what's, because I have one.
Because they dry out real quickly.
Yeah, they dry out.
And you drink the meth-o.
I do, it's true.
The methylated spirits.
I could just drink directly from the bottle,
but I choose to fill up my Zippo and then drink from that
because it feels more sophisticated.
I pinky out.
Yep.
Drinking from the Zippo.
Do you light it as you're drinking from it?
Sometimes.
That's cool.
Dangerous.
Yeah. This is light it as you're drinking from it? Sometimes. That's cool. Yeah. All right. Dangerous. Yeah. This is April 2025. My kids, my eldest in particular will love this. Does he play Minecraft? No, a little bit. At the moment he's into Minecraft dungeons and he wants to get that for Christmas, which is like a, it's kind of a dungeon fighting whatever thing. Okay, sure. Etc. Oh yeah. It's alright. I get it. Okay, great. I get Yeah. And I understand the appeal of Minecraft. Hey Dave look what I'm doing here. I get it. I get it.
That's right. To save you a little time son, whenever you think you're you want to show me something,
remember that I get it. I get it. Yeah. And then he goes, Dad there's a phone call for you. Ring ring. Oh no.
Hello, it's the Dad of the Year award. I'm glad I got that phone installed just in case.
That's right.
You've been disqualified.
What?
Yeah, that's right.
Forever.
Okay.
Thank you.
Well, just for this first kid, you were still in contention for the second.
Hell yeah.
I got an email about doing an ads for this for the podcast.
For Minecraft?
Yeah, we'll do an ad or I'll just read the ad when you're not here.
You're great. And they're like, what's your experience with Minecraft? Yeah, we'll do an ad or I'll just read the ad when you're not here. Yeah, great.
And they're like, what's your experience with Minecraft?
This ad will probably happen.
So will this burn that bridge?
Who gives a shit?
Do you like Minecraft?
I'm like, oh no, do you know what it is?
And if so, do you like it?
I'm like, yeah, no, I fucking know what the most popular thing of all time is.
As I say to my kids, I get it.
I get it.
Ring, ring. Oh wait, I've got a call on the get it. I get it. Ring ring.
Oh, wait, I've got a call on the other line.
Hello. Yeah, this is the Minecraft guys you're currently talking to.
You're off the ad.
Click.
Hello.
I have two phones. You've got two phones.
You purchased two phones.
Yeah. And then they're like,
are you going to be covering this later this year?
Then when it comes out and I'm like, oh, we'll cover it.
I didn't say whether it'd be good or bad, but like, yeah, we'll
talk about the Mycraft movie.
Don't even worry about that, mate.
Don't even worry.
I just quickly add.
Do I look pretty good?
Yeah.
It's kind of fun.
I don't know.
I think it'll be at the very least, I don't think it'll be Borderlands, I think at the
least it'll be the Mario movie, which was an OK movie that kids loved.
That's true.
Yeah, and I quite like it.
It's got a fun look to it.
I like when they were running from the Skellingtons.
Man, I'm with you, man, and it's doing the night zombie stuff and whatever.
I'm with you.
Yeah, I think if I had to guess, I would say, you know, Jumanji level.
I thought they were, you know, a fun afternoon at the movies.
From the director of Red One, a bad movie.
No, not that, not the Jumanji movie.
Who's directing this?
Luca Guadagnino.
Hell yeah, he's good.
Wow.
Jared Hess, who did Nacho Libre.
That's interesting.
And Napoleon Dynamite.
I did not know that.
That's very interesting.
That's very interesting. Don't you think that's interesting? Yeah. Do you think John did not know that that's very interesting.
That's very interesting.
Don't you think that's interesting?
Yeah.
Do you think John Hayter will be in it?
Probably.
As Napoleon Dynamite, but he's blocking Napoleon Dynamite.
That's interesting.
You think he'll be in it as some dynamite?
He might be.
He might be the voice of the dynamite we see.
Hey, I'm dynamite.
Tina, I'm dynamite.
Great stuff.
Hey, you've got to collect me.
Hey, you've got to dig up some dirt and then you combine dirt and glue or something and you make dynamite
That's me. If you're listening to us and you want us to sponsor the minecraft movie and tell that we're ready. Oh
Hey kids
Here's how you make dynamite for real. What? No.
It's in the episode description.
We put a real recipe for dynamite.
It's not.
We got it out of the Anarchist cookbook.
Listen, it is in there, but don't look at it.
We did put it in there.
Don't look at it though.
Don't look at it unless you're above the age of 18 and it's legal to make dynamite in your
home state.
Yep.
Then you can.
You can look at it.
Yeah.
You can look at it then.
Yeah. You can look at it then. Elio, Pixar's next.
It's about the boy and he goes to space, et cetera.
Okay.
What do you mean by that?
Did you watch the trailer?
What I did is I saw it and then I think someone suggested that maybe this was a test clip
or was canceled or something.
It was announced in 2022.
That's what I'm thinking.
But that wasn't that long ago. And it's basically a boy discovering that the universe is bigger, et cetera. was a test clip or was cancelled or something? It was announced in 2022. That's what I'm thinking.
But that wasn't that long ago.
And it's basically a boy discovering that like the universe is bigger, etc.
It's from Pixar's creative chiefs officer, Pete Docter.
No, he revealed it.
Turning Red director Domi Shi is working on the film.
I like Turning Red a lot.
Turning Red's very good.
I think that could be an interesting movie.
Okay then.
Yeah, that's good.
Cool. All right. Ring ring. Hello, it's Mr. Docter. Hello then. Yeah, that's good. Cool. All right.
Ring ring. Hello, it's Mr. Doctor.
Hello.
I'm afraid it's terminal.
Terminally good?
Yes.
That I'll die?
Yes.
All right. Bad guys too.
Okay. I didn't see the trailer for this.
Yeah, it's good. It's still Rockwell as a Fox or whatever.
Oh, okay.
I don't know. Did they recast? I don't think so.
There's been some specials.
I've seen Fantastic Mr. Fox.
Sure.
Do you think it's related? Oh, he's a wolf actually. some specials. I've seen Fantastic Mr. Fox. Is that related?
Oh, he's a wolf actually. He's a wolf. His name's Mr. Wolf.
OK. It's kind of Ocean's Eleven-esque.
It's got Aquafina, it's got Richard Ayoade, it's got Zazie Beats,
it's got Craig Robinson, it's got Mark Maron, it's got Anthony Ramos.
Ramos. I love that.
I'm going to say it better.
Don't worry. You've said it the best anyone's ever said it.
Thank you.
So yeah, I like the-
Ring, ring.
Hello.
It's the pronouncing Anthony Ramos' name awards.
Hello?
Yeah.
Gold.
Gold for Australia.
Wow.
Yeah, that's right.
You've done it.
This means a lot to me.
Yeah.
Anthony Ramos would be here, but he's busy.
What's he doing?
He's recording additional dialogue for the bad guys.
All right.
Yeah. Also, he didn't want to be on the call. Ali and I said, hi.
We won't do that.
That's not what we do.
We hit a call you.
You don't relay messages.
No, that's I mean, what do you take us for?
What are you?
What are we, your messenger voice?
I don't know what this is.
We're taking this award back.
What?
We're taking the gold.
But I don't even physically have anything.
We're taking the gold away for the
pronouncing Anthony Ramos awards and we're awarding you with silver with silver is not as good. That's okay though. It's fine
Can you pass a message on to him to taste say thank you bronze?
Goodbye click
That's still pretty good I think so rods for doing nothing I think so too. Yeah
Anyway, our bad guys fun books. Okay, son reads them fun
Do they have the same look as they do in the movies?
Is it one of those things where they...
Do you think they designed the characters ahead of time to make them look like animated
serious characters?
No, I don't think so.
They're just very silly and they kind of escalate in a weird way.
Because we were reading them and I got 11 or 12 books in and I'm like, I'm fucking lost.
I don't know where I am in this anymore.
Well your son would know all the continuity.
It's fun though, they're fun. They're funny.
Also, How to Train Your Dragon is here.
The trailer. But real!
And Jerry Butler's in it again. Did you know that?
I'm a dragon.
No, he's a man.
I'm a man now.
He's the dad.
I'm the dad.
I'm the dad.
You'll never be a train the dragon.
But dad, I want to.
You're not allowed to.
You're not allowed. Look at you. I've got a big helmet with horns on dad, I want to. You're not allowed to. You're not allowed.
Look at you, I've got a big helmet with horns on it and you don't.
You never will.
You've just got a little knife.
Mason did this for probably five minutes before we started the show.
I just, I watched the trailer with the sound off and I just narrated what I thought all
the characters were saying, which was literally what they were doing in the trailer.
And I think that's how the movie goes.
I can only assume.
You'll never trade a dragon.
I've seen three of them.
All of them?
Okay.
So it's the director of the original who wanted to-
There's a dragon in front of me.
I better run away.
Yeah, you got it.
I'm just a little boy.
Well, they're bad guys, right?
The dragons.
The dragons, or they think they are.
Okay.
The one kid.
He meets the little one.
Yeah.
Okay.
He's like, oh no, are cool, and he trains them now
Some have said this looks very much like a frame by frame adaptation of the of the first animated movie like yes Exactly it does look exactly like that okay
They are correct and some have said and I don't know how true this is but there's a how to drain train your dragon
How to drain a dragon?
What I don't know. Um. Ring ring?
What? Stop this bit that you're
doing. This is me by the way
on the phone. Okay, well.
Well, I've got a real phone. It sucks, it's weird.
Nobody likes it.
Um. Bronze.
It's not bad.
It's not bad. I didn't even finish
the joke. So that's pretty good.
Imagine if I finished the joke, I'd be in for gold.
But I got this phone call that interrupted me.
And I reckon if I didn't take that phone call.
So this is my own fault.
You could have to pick it up.
Anyway, I saw some people say that there is a how to train your dragon park, like a theme
park attraction.
Oh, okay.
Oh, this is for that.
This is just to keep the brand alive.
Yes, probably.
Which is fascinating to think about when you go, I don't really think about how like, this
is DreamWorks, but like Disney parks would do billions of dollars a year in attendance
and rides and food and what have you so to think to consider the idea of like making them
You know a hundred and fifty two hundred million dollar movie just to promote
Theme parks. Yeah, that is that seems inconceivable, but it's real. It's totally real
Yeah, it's interesting because I feel like this is when because dream dreams stone. What a dream works
Whatever they did like ants and ants is shit, I think.
Wow.
What if Woody Allen was an ant?
You'll say anything about a movie with Woody Allen as an ant?
Probably would.
Yeah, well.
And then they like, they did some good stuff that people like didn't see.
Like, like they've done like Joseph, the road to El Dorado, Prince of Egypt.
Road to El Dorado is great.
It's really good. And, and some other stuff like in there that didn't do asado, Prince of Egypt. Road to El Dorado is great. It's really good.
And some other stuff like in there that didn't do as well, like Shark Tale. I don't like
the Madagascar movies. They did okay. Like Over the Hedge is fine. Flushed Away is fine.
B-movie is dreadful, obviously, but funny. But then they did Kung Fu Panda. And they
started on these in like 2010-ish or a bit before. And that's when they didn't then they got there was more consistency to it
Uh-huh. So they got I feel like the DreamWorks stuff now is as good as the Pixar stuff. Okay, I think yeah
Yeah, cuz Pixar I think is not and they also do some weirder stuff like the new pussy and boots
Pussy boots. Oh, they also do like the boss baby. Ring ring. Hello. It's Antonio Vanderas. Oh my
really? Is it? That's awesome. What are you doing here on my phone? I just wanted to say hello and
compliment you on saying Boots and Boots. You're welcome. Can you make another Zorro movie for me?
No. Why not? Why not? He's gone. What? He didn't want to answer. Isn't it weird?
Because like...
He rang me.
Well, I was going to say, and how did he even know you said that?
Has he bugged this room?
Wow, he's got a lot of interest in us.
But not a lot of interest in answering our questions.
Yeah.
I think it's interesting.
What I was going to say there is, I mean, Pixar is still good.
They are... Yeah, Pixar is still good. They are still, I guess, locked into the idea of a movie that has got important themes.
Whereas DreamWorks is like, what if a panda did Kung Fu?
Wouldn't that be fun?
What if a cat that was Zora had a panic attack?
Exactly.
Let's say it.
Yeah.
Wish Antonio Banderas would ring back.
Maybe he will.
Yeah. Maybe he's out of phone credit. It might beanderas would ring back. Maybe he will. Yeah.
Maybe he's out of phone credit.
It might be.
That's probably it.
Yeah.
Because he wouldn't have hung up on me, would he?
No, that's true.
Yeah, he probably just ran out of phone credit.
He's staring at his phone there.
He's like, oh, good.
Again, I'm in the shops and get more credit.
They also did The Wild Robot recently.
Oh, right.
Which is good.
Well, that's got themes.
Exactly.
Anyway, we'll see.
Hopefully it's less The Lion King and more something good.
Oh, yeah. I keep seeing trailers for that Lion King.
I think that Lion King movie, it looks way better than the remake.
Oh, yeah.
At least it's different. It's a different story.
At least they've been forced to make new Lion King content.
Exactly. Unless it's based on a prequel comic or something like that.
Probably is. There's something going on there.
There's something going on.
Speaking of live action, our last bit of news is we've got to talk about how the
Rock is dressing up as Maui on set. Well, Sergeant Rock and the Rock, what are we
in a quarry? No. I didn't think so. Yeah, no. That would be strange.
Would be strange, wouldn't it? How would we have even gotten there? That mean we were
always in a quarry? Is that a new thing that happened this week?
I don't know.
There's too many riffs on this one this week, Mason.
Stretching out too long.
We just got to get through this.
I've got to power through, all right.
Moana, it's coming out in July of 2026, but The Rock is on set dressed as Maui.
And Moana 2, the animated movie.
That's also coming out next week.
Next week?
Yeah, do you want to talk about that next week?
I guess, sure.
You have to watch Moana 1 first.
I don't have to.
I would.
I could go in as a guy who doesn't know anything about the first one.
You could.
Moana, which borders Melbourne, Victoria.
Oh, yes.
It's your come Moana.
No, Moana is great.
And I'll stand by that.
That movie that everybody likes.
I agree.
It's beyond Disney Plus, wouldn't it?
Yeah, definitely.
But The Rock looks like he might be wearing a big muscle suit over his muscles.
Interesting.
To make him more like, more comedically muscled.
But also I imagine, because that character is completely covered in tattoos.
Yeah, that would be part of it.
But I bet he'll do a thing, like there'll be a press conference or whatever, or he'll be asked about it and be like, there's barely
any padding in it. It's mostly, remember, it was like, I tried on the Black Adam suit and had
muscles in it, but I took out all of the muscles. That's right. I put my own muscles in it. And then
I wore it on set and they said, why, how have you made the suit even bigger and more muscular?
Did you put more padding in? And he's like, no, I took it out.
These are my real big muscles.
And it's made of condoms and I pissed in it.
That's right.
Yeah.
How do you think I got the logo so yellow?
I don't know about this Moana live action.
Okay.
I don't know, Mason.
Disney Plus is also a sing-along version.
Yep.
You can check that out.
How many songs are in it?
Seven.
Seven songs.
It's got good songs.
Lin-Manuel Miranda does them.
Jermaine Clements sings one
and it feels very Flight of the Conchord.
So he didn't write it.
Okay, that's fine.
All right, I'll watch Moana.
It's definitely worth checking out.
So Moana 2's out next week?
Yes.
Okay.
I'm looking at the movies that this director has done.
He directed... X-Men Dark Phoenix?
Oh no.
Whoa!
Has he not directed a movie before?
Whoa!
Maybe he's a director of photography or something.
Directed Thomas Kale.
He's an American theatre and television director.
So he directed like Hamilton and In the Heights.
So I think this is...
This might be his first movie, but he's done some TV and stuff as well.
Okay, alright. He's done a bunch TV and stuff as well. Okay, alright.
He's done a bunch of theatre directing as well.
Well, I believe in him.
Well, if it's just Moana, it'll probably be alright, because that's a great movie.
Nice.
And that's what I want, an alright movie.
Alright.
Alright.
Life and death were two very realistic coexisting possibilities in my life.
I didn't even think I'd make it to like my 16th birthday,
to be honest.
I grew up being scared of who I was.

Wicked, part one is storming into cinemas. Acast.com. Wicked Part One is storming into cinemas.
Ring ring.
Hello.
Who's this?
Who is it?
It's refreshment.
Two crisp drinks.
That's right.
I can't believe I missed my patented opening drink at the start of the episode.
One eight hundred refreshment.
I guess that joke's dead now.
I don't know.
Just that I don't have to commit to it anymore, right?
That's so true.
Yeah, you were looking for an out and you found it.
Easy.
Yeah.
Get out of anything.
Yeah, I was going to say, you're always looking for the easiest out.
Whether it be not doing a famous opening a bottle gag or another thing.
Or a separate thing.
Mason.
Yes, hello.
Wicked Part 1 is in cinemas. Surprise everyone, it's part one.
That's right.
It's very small on some of the posters, but not most of them.
And it tells you also very small at the start of this movie, doesn't it?
That's so true.
I didn't even catch it.
I pulled my son out of school to watch this.
I went in and I'm surprised.
I'm like, let's go.
And he's like, where are we going?
And I'm like to the doctors to get a bunch of injections.
Whoa.
Just kidding.
I already did that. Let's go. And he's like, where are we going? And I'm like to the doctors to get a bunch of injections.
Whoa.
Just kidding.
I already did that.
Let's go see a movie.
So it's all wicked.
He'd seen the stage show recently on a budget of probably around 150 million
dollars.
It's looking to make about 100 million in its U.S.
opening.
Gladiator 2 is also opening or did open in the U.S.
And so that's going to make about 65, US and so that's gonna make about 65 which
is because that's R rated so this is a big weekend for our cinema in the US at
least and just the world overall so and also the musical is back. The musical is back.
Did the musical ever leave? I don't think it did. I don't think it did I mean think
about distant history Joker 2. Joker 2 musical. There was a musical and now there's
another musical so I don't think it ever left. No, you're right.
Yeah.
Cool.
What do you think the story was?
Oh, come on.
You know the story.
We recently watched a bunch of Wizard of Oz stuff.
That's true.
Did that help with this?
No, not really.
Anyway, remember the Wizard of Oz?
And then at the end of the Wizard of Oz, they kill the Wicked Witch.
The end, yes.
They melted her with water.
And they're like, she's dead and we're glad. Everyone's glad. Let's sing the end. Yes. They melted him with water and they're like, got her.
She's dead and we're glad everyone's glad. Let's sing about it.
Yep.
But what if actually the wicked witch was good.
Yeah.
And actually you should feel bad that you celebrated her death.
Cause you're racist.
Yeah.
It's about racism.
I saw.
Yeah, it is.
Isn't it sort of sort of sort of is you can be anything you want in
this weird world except green.
Yeah, don't do that.
Don't do that. Don't do that.
Don't do...
Don't be green and don't wear a specific type of hat.
Or be a goat.
Don't be a goat.
Don't do that.
Don't be an animal.
Don't be an animal.
This movie's got an animal racism plot.
It certainly does.
Which I googled afterwards.
I'm like, surely that's not in the musical.
It is.
Oh, this is just the musical.
Directed by John M. Chu.
Well, that's interesting. Directed by Crazy Rich Asians. Yeah, so he's an interesting choice.
Oh no, it makes sense. He's a good choice for this because he did Step Up to the Streets.
He did Step Up 3D. He did G.I. Joe Retaliation. What? He did Gem and the Holograms. Oh, did that
come out? Yep. He did Now You See Me 2. me too. You crazy rotations He did in the Heights which was the Lin-Manuel Miranda musical before he did Hamilton, right?
Uh-huh. So it makes sense. I think in terms of direction. He did a great job on this
I think it's it's very well put together. Uh-huh. But what I think is this is so
Long and I felt it
I know people are loving it universally and And I know my son was also like,
why is this fucking going forever? Because the musical itself, if you go and see it,
it's two hours and 45 minutes. And that includes a 15 minute intermission.
And does that include the entire thing? That's the entire thing.
So this, the movie I've just seen, plus a second. Yeah, and an intermission that whole thing is 245
Yes, three. So the musical as in yeah the live when you go see two hours 45 done
You are out and this was two hours and 41 minutes and it's just the first half and it's interesting because like it's not that
Different there's not much added right? It's just longer
Okay, just 40 minutes.
And I liked this.
How are they doing that?
Scenes are extended.
Okay.
You know with the bit where they're dancing together when she wears the hat or whatever?
That's relatively quick.
Where a couple of friends, one's wearing a hat and one is not.
Wearing a hat.
The bit where they free the lion and stuff like that.
Those are all-
Oh, that'd be a little thing.
These are quick sequences
Yeah, right, and I understand like yeah
You cannot directly translate all of it because the the musical like it moves out a clip
But I felt for me that like go we're at this school forever. We didn't like the two-hour mark
We haven't even left well see the I god damn Harry
What a fucking nightmare because I have no frame of reference because I haven't seen the original
Yeah, so I was in there just like I guess this is is going to go as long as it's going to go.
I'm not sure.
Yeah.
What's happening here.
I'm not sure.
But I guess that probably explains why in watching this movie, I'm like, some of these scenes would,
you wouldn't think about how they don't make a ton of sense if they just went like that.
Yeah.
Kind of thing.
That's because they kind of really churn.
Real Harry Potter madness.
Why is there animal racism in this universe?
Well, they tell you later, don't they?
Yes, they do.
Why is it okay to be anything you want except green?
Yeah.
Why is that? Why is this particular hat?
Why is this a dumb hat?
Subjective of derision given everybody else dresses like this?
Yep.
No?
Great question.
Isn't it though?
All around.
Anyway, Cynthia Urveo is Elphaba, which is the name of the Wicked Witch.
I thought she was wonderful.
I think she was good, very good. Apparently something of a diva in real life.
Well aren't we all?
Yes, that's right.
I don't care man.
Yeah, no I don't need to know.
I mean how many actors are like, and maybe she's dreadful.
Yeah.
But like how many actors are like, this guy came to set, he punched somebody, but he was
doing good acting in the moment.
I'm looking here and it doesn't seem like she pissed in any of her costumes or any models.
I know there was that controversy about the poster where she was, she called it out for
like- Covering her face too much?
Covering her face or whatever. And it was, I don't know the full story of this, but it was like, well, um, she called it out for like covering her face, covering her face or whatever.
And it was, I don't know the full story of this, but it was like, well, that's what the poster was.
Initially.
And she came out and she was like, yeah, I probably went into that a little harder or whatever.
Like, yeah.
Also like the amount of shit that she has got online just in general, like, yeah, it would be fucking awful.
Uh, but anyway, I thought she was really good.
I think also there's a subtle subtlety in this, which I think works better than the theater show. One of the few things is that,
not one of the few things, there's a lot of things that work in this, is that like, you
get to, you know, when you're watching somebody experience something, they have to do like
big emotions and big grand gestures. Whereas this, you get that subtlety of like, like
the moment where she's doing the dance and, and like she is being affected by it and you
see that she's crying.
I thought that-
You can't see that.
No.
You can't see that 100 feet away on a stage.
I think it's really,
I think she doesn't bring it all the way up.
She's not too theatrical.
Because I think people sometimes do make that mistake
when you film a musical
that you have to do it in a huge flush.
What I would say-
And she doesn't.
And so she's come from Broadway flush. I would say it doesn't. And so she is she's she's a broad.
She's come from Broadway.
So I would say is as well is that she is doing the best in this movie of singing in a way
where you understand what is happening.
Yeah. You know what I mean?
Because like the point of a you know, a theater musical is they're singing to forward the plot.
And so you're singing to forward the plot, singing to forward the plot. Exactly. And so you have- We're singing to forward the plot. They're singing to forward the plot, exactly.
And so you have to, the lyrics have to be very clear
and the singing has to be very clear
so I can understand the emotions or what is happening.
Whereas I think some people in this
are not doing as good as a job,
where like some of the vocals are quite muddy.
And again, it's that thing where we talk about where
audio in cinema generally now, a lot of it is quite bad depending on the cinema you go into and you need, because otherwise
it's just noise.
It's just, you know, and I think I would say also throughout the movie, initially Ariana
Grande's character is not as good at that, but there are scenes, I think there's a scene
where they sing together for the first time and I'm like, okay, they're working together.
I wonder if it was your theatre because I didn't really feel that at all.
There was some controversy about like, was that stunt casting her?
But I think she worked really well.
I think she is suitably...
She's annoying.
Annoying and self-absorbed.
And she's very annoying like in the play and the musical, but she's also a lot of fun and
funny and I think she did honestly like a very good job.
Yeah, the character grew on me.
Yeah.
And she does grow as like a person.
And physically, one point is 50 feet tall.
Yeah, and that was really cool, I thought.
What I think also maybe it's to do with the sound also
is that this was filmed similarly to like Les Mis,
where I think they've got lapel mics
and a lot of the singing,
and they probably fix a bunch of this in post
and this isn't actually true, but they they're singing live. So they're not they're not
They're not miming or whatever or or singing it and then they just replace it right?
Yeah, they're actually singing it
So a lot of the stuff in this is is their actual vocals on set, which I guess maybe doesn't always work
Uh-huh for you at least. Yeah,. Um I think it looks really good too. I
think there is a... I was expecting to be duller I think. I thought it would be
more green screen empty voids. Yeah right. There's some really big sets in this.
Uh-huh. The costume is also really good. Costuming is great. There's you know
there's a couple of big crowd scenes. There's there's one in Munchkinland I
think at the start where everybody celebrates the death of the Wicked
Witch. Which is rude by the way. It's very racist
It's racist and they had an effigy all ready to go
Yeah, yeah, I guess you could just set up an effigy and whoever died you could just put their hat on or whatever green
Whatever. Yeah. Yeah, exactly. Yeah, and they love celebrate. There's a scene in the Emerald City and there's one
Sort of midway through I think, but like every extra has
this very specific costume, like every, they haven't just gone, well this is asymmetrical
coats and whatever.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, but they're all like, they've all got an incredible, this is pretty niche,
but like they've all got an incredible kind of like a very specific colorway and there's
like there's in, in Munchkinland at one point there's, you can see one family comes out
of their home and they all have matching clothes.
Oh, I didn't even notice that.
They're all dressed in, they all have denim outfits, but it's all like...
Oh, that's fun.
Yeah, so it's like, all this stuff that you only see for a couple of minutes on screen,
like they're really...
What are you typing there?
I'm typing this to Collinx.
Okay, right.
Sorry.
I know I'm typing notes on you.
Listen to this idiot.
Finally, somebody's writing about me.
Sorry. Yeah. No, I mean, you're more of a clothing person than me. So that's obviously
something that you appreciated.
Got a blue denim in my veins, Jimmy Barnes style.
Jimmy Barnes style.
Yeah, it looks really good. Yeah. I expected from, you know, discourse on the internet
that this was going to look awful and washed out, but I think for the most part it looked
quite good.
I thought it would be really like, almost like a three, the way that this was going to look awful and washed out. But I think for the most part it looked quite good. I thought it would be really like almost like a three. The way that this is probably a bad
example because most of this looks good but you know in the Sam Raimi, Oz the Great and Powerful
movie. There are some scenes where it's like this doesn't look there like they're anywhere.
No it's got that fog about it.
Yeah this doesn't have that. And I think it's because yeah they a lot of these
sets they build these
real amazing sets. Like there is the Munchkin City at the start, which is very similar to
this, well it's the same location I guess that the original Wizard of Oz. There's a
moment at the end where they go into the Emerald City, which looks incredible. Huge set as
well. And there's a library set which has like rotating bookshelves, which is all very
good.
Like a centrifuge. It's like you have to get your books in the Gravitron.
Oh my god, I love that. Imagine how much vomit they'd have to clean out of those bookshelves.
So much vomit. I'm just going to get a book on astronomy.
Vomitology. Nice. Apparently that's the idea of making it like this is inspired from Hook.
I don't know if you've seen Hook recently. Not recently, no.
That is, I mean, I can see it. Hook is a huge set movie.
Yeah, right.
Big, big sets going on there, nice and...
Yeah, supporting cast, I enjoy it as well.
So we've got, includes Jonathan Bailey, who's going to be in the new Jurassic World movie,
right?
Oh yeah, he's Mr. Bridgerton in season two of Bridgerton.
Mr. Bridgerton, that's highly on you, I'm sure.
He's also in all the Broadchurch seasons.
Is he?
Yeah, he's a journalist in that.
I'm Mr. Bridgerton.
Who's doing a Broadchurch in here?
Exactly.
David Tennant.
David Tennant.
I would never, sir.
Have it you.
And they're sort of fighting.
I love Broadchurch.
In Broadchurch.
Season three.
That's exactly right, yes. Who else? And they're sort of fighting. I love Broadchurch. In Broadchurch. Season 3.
That's exactly right.
Yes.
Who else?
Bowen Yang?
Bowen Yang and Marissa Bode as Ariana Grande or Galinda's friends, her mean friends.
Peter Dinklage as Professor Goat.
He's a goat.
Ethan Slater.
Who are?
Is that again?
He's the munchkin.
Even though the munchkins are people-sized.
Yeah.
Oh, because he's Arianakin's a people size.
Yeah.
Oh, cause he's Ariana Grande's real life partner.
There was some kind of controversy thing there or whatever.
That he left his wife and child.
Or her.
Maybe that's true.
I have no idea.
Yeah, he's good in this I think as well.
So he's mostly a Broadway guy as well I think.
Yes he is, yeah.
And then Michelle is the principal.
Great.
And people know this from the trailer so it's not really a spoiler, but Jeff Goblin is the wonderful Wizard of Oz.
He certainly is. And? But is he so wonderful? No. This movie, this, this, all your pre or day notions of who's good and who's bad,
they're throwing up in the air, aren't they? They're put in a big spinning library and spun about. You know how? And you all vomit all over this movie.
You know how like in all the other movies and things, The Wizard of Oz is a good guy.
Yes.
And he's really magic.
That's right.
In this one, he's a bad guy and he's not magic.
That's right.
Yeah.
Yeah.
He's a big meanie.
Yeah.
I think, yeah, great cast.
I guess we'll probably talk more about.
Well, I mean, like talking in a broad sense, a broad church sense about the slot and
speaking about things that are sort of vaguely like, again, the fact that it is spread so
thin, like you said I think
really makes you think about how the plot is quite thin yeah so I mean I like you know that
Elphaba and Galinda they slowly yes they have a rivalry and then it grows into friendship and
that's quite nice um but so the idea is that uh Elphaba the the woman who's to become a witch she is she's born green. Yeah, and then her family
Rejects her and she's raised by a bear. Yes, but then she's still in the family
Yeah, and her younger sister who is in a wheelchair. She is going to this
Special school special school of mad. I think they're both just going to the school in the musical
All right, I think from them. Yeah, but but Elphaba is sort of escorting her to the school and then yeah
but she's got a she's got a
Connection to magic a vague connection to magic
She can move stuff with her mind and so she also goes
Ends up going to the university and then she meets Galinda and they have the rivalry and blah blah blah and then
Michelle yo wants to teach her magic.
Yep, that's all in the musical.
It's all in the musical, but it's just a lot of scenes of somebody going...
It's quick.
Yeah, but in this it's just there's multiple scenes of Michelle Yeoh going,
try and use your magic.
She's like, I can't use magic though.
No, concentrate.
Yeah. Well, what if you thought about something that made you really mad?
Well, I'm really mad. All the magic worked.
Yeah.
Well, maybe focus on that. All the magic worked. Yeah.
Well, maybe focus on that.
Maybe do that, I guess.
Yeah, yeah.
But I mean, and then she is sort of invited to visit the Emerald City and, but it's all
a bit.
Yeah.
I genuinely think like having seen the show and watched this, I saw it twice actually,
not to brag.
I went to the London West End.
Moneybags, all right.
Thank you. It was in 2008. I was at the very back. But I'm facing a pillar. You got the Jenny Nicholson seat. I did. It
was still great. I genuinely think that there is two movies in this. I think if this could
be two hours though, it does not need to be two hours 40. No. Oh, also there's another
subplot which is that there is also in this society, there's animals that can talk.
Yep.
And they can teach at university.
Yep.
But they're slowly losing their ability to talk.
Yep.
And they're disappearing because of animal racism or something.
Yep.
And Peter Dinklage is Professor Goat and he's like, well, I'm...
Mr. Bridgerton.
Exactly.
How about you?
Kting, kting, kting.
Yeah, it's a good...
There's no animal sort of fight.
It's the climax of the movie. Um, but I
Don't really know why that's in here. I don't well, it's in the thing. I guess it's in the musical
Yeah, I feel like they probably could have cut it out
I think it's also a way to shoehorn in why there's flying monkeys and the cowlily line and etc
I think it's like probably in the book. This is wicked is also based on a book or whatever, right? It's probably from that. Yeah, but I don't really
Because it's never it's never occurred to me in the your any of the original Oz stuff
Why some some animals can talk and some can't yeah, like it doesn't know I agree but also without that we're sort of missing
There's not really a there's not really a central conflict. And again, like when you...
I think there is, but it takes too long to kind of...
Yeah, it's all...
Wind its way around to it.
It's the third act before any kind of conflict occurs and then it's just suddenly...
Conflict that's not this woman is grain, which eventually just people go, who cares?
Yeah, exactly.
Yeah.
That really, like at some point in the movie they just go, who gives a shit?
Yeah, that's right.
Well, yeah. We've seen you're an actual person. We've had conversations with you and everything. It's fine. Yeah. Anyway, I generally I'll just quickly Nessa Rosa sister
I think wasn't given enough to do in this that's a she's a bigger player and more interesting
It's not just you're embarrassing me like they have a connection
Yeah, yeah, and maybe that'll and that will expand upon in the second one
But there is like yeah, the dynamic there is I don and that will expand upon in the second one, but there is like yeah the dynamic
There is I don't think she's given enough to do right, right?
I mean, there's a sort there's a sort of an assault a boat is sort of an oh, yes
The well then I don't know Galina's the name of Galina's other friend
I was gonna say there there is an assortment of love triangles
Yeah, because Jonathan Bailey's character who's sort of uh, he's sort of a Prince Charming
He's a Prince Charming sort of sort of gad about and he's been expelled from a bunch of universities but he comes in
and he's you know smooth and sexy and whatever yeah and I'm like is he age
appropriate I can't really tell because he seems old. He's 38. He seems like he's
supposed to be like the movie pitches him like he's like 19. Alphabar is 37 in real life.
Okay right well then they are. They're all musical age. No exactly yes, that's right. And I think the original Glinda and Alphabar are in this as well.
It's what's their name from Frozen etc. Oh, yeah, it's um Kristin Chenoweth and the other lady.
Yeah, they make it a little, but I was gonna say there's an assortment of love triangles because
everybody loves him and Ariel,
Glinda wants to marry him, but also he's a little
bit in love with Elphaba.
He's thinking about it.
Also, um, Ariana, Ariana Grande is real life boyfriend is in love with Glinda, but then
he falls in love with Elphaba's sister and then does the et cetera.
Yes, exactly.
So that's all, you know, it's again, it's sort of a, I like the look of this movie and
I kind of like the fun relationships, but there's sort of, there's not enough, there doesn't seem to really be enough to build a interesting
movie on.
Let me tell you, there is, but it's, yeah.
If they shrunk this down to a tight 90 minutes or two hours.
What about the songs?
Yeah, they're fun.
I like them.
Yeah.
Surprise this is a musical, by the way.
Again, I think there are a lot of, I think there are two two people there are two types of people are gonna be enraged by this
One is people who are not aware that wicked is a musical or they thought this was gonna be a non musical version of the musical
Yeah, I would say that if you are on board with the whimsy of the Wizard of Oz universe
You shouldn't really be mad
But I would say also there is gonna be a lot of people who are upset at part one
Yeah, and not that it isn't a fully complete to be continued to be continued. Yeah, let's do some spoilers
Okay, I'm gonna say best movie ever though. I think I'm in yeah, my son
We've talked about it a lot and he's like I liked it when they got to the Emerald City
He loves the Wizards face and all these like meganations and all that because he looks like a transformer
That's exactly what he said. It looks like Megatron's head. That's an amazing stage kind of puppetry that they do as well.
Oh, but also yeah, like in terms of the songs are is one of the there was some full songs and there's some that are
sort of like snippets of songs. There's the one where they the Elphaba and Galinda are like I loathe you, you know,
that was a fun song. The Defying Gravity song, which is the big finale song. I recognize that.
I think also with that in the music, I wasn't sure how they were going to do it because in the musical,
she just flies off. And on a stage that looks spectacular. But seeing that in a movie, it's
like who cares?
She does break the sound barrier Iron Man 1 style.
I think they did a good job of making that bigger and work for the... they adapted that well.
Which helmet goes down?
Yeah!
I think after they get to the Emerald City it gets way better.
I think it really picks up.
No, it does, yeah.
Because it feels like they're running out of time, honestly.
Yes, that's right.
Yeah.
So yeah, and I thought Defying Gravity was great.
I thought they did a really good job.
Anyway, big spoilers.
It's time for big spoilers.
Animal racism.
Yeah, so, break this down to me.
They're basically looking for a villain.
It's the story, it's as old as time.
It's happening right now.
It's like immigrants are ruining the country,
but if we get rid of them, then your life will be better.
But in this case, immigrants are the animals that can talk.
And they're like, okay, if we cage them up,
they won't learn to talk, and they'll just be regular animals I guess yeah okay
I don't know yeah fine I guess yeah fine yeah I think that I think that's fine I'm on
the wizard side all right but then the wizard is they do the well here's the
thing they also do that thing in we've talked about recently I think in some
capacity or in some context where they bring Elphaba
to the Emerald City because she has some magical abilities and there is a magical book that
only people with incredible magical abilities can understand and read. She can understand
it immediately. And then Michelle Yeoh's character, the principal of the university and the wizard
are like, good, now we can do evil. And she's like, sorry, what? And he's like, you know,
animal racism, we're going to do animal racism and evil with this
because and we're going to ask you to help us.
You're not going to.
I mean, and that feels like a kind of musical thing to do.
Yeah.
Where it's like, and now it's time to do evil.
What?
Well, I won't do evil.
I'll do good.
And off I go, you know, kind of thing in a musical, you just brush it off and they do
a song.
Yeah.
And you move to the next thing.
But in this, you've got enough uncompressed time to be like, why would you say that? That's interesting because like, I didn't even think of that.
Having seen the musical, I was just like, yeah, that's what happens. But yeah, you're right.
In this context, it's strange. Yeah. They're like, do a magical spell that causes horrible
mutations in these monkeys and gives them painful wings that they hate. Good job. Good job. Now,
let's do some more evil. And she's like, sorry, what? Wouldn't you do a spell that makes the in these monkeys and gives them painful wings and that they hate. Good job. Good job.
Now let's do some more evil.
And she's like, sorry, what?
Wouldn't you do a spell that makes the flowers grow?
And you'd be like, oh, this is nice.
Yeah.
I'd love to do more nice things.
And then you slowly get into animal racism.
Well, I made those flowers.
I might as well do animal racism.
God.
So yeah, this is to be continued as I told you at the end.
Part two, they filmed them at the same time.
This will be out this time next year.
Now, The Wizard is Elphaba's real father, right?
How did you know?
Because you can tell.
It is, yeah.
I'm like, that's Jeff Goldblum doing a big root on her mum.
I could tell.
He did say that in all the press interviews.
Oh, did he?
That's me doing a big root.
I loved him in this though.
I thought he was so fun and whimsical and sinister.
And then he was also like the wizard is
an absolute fucking scumbag and out of his depth and just like the veneer of like
Like he's so surface level and if you scratch that he's so transparent. I think he did that really really well. Yeah
Yeah. All right. I'll say it if you want, you know what it is. Yeah, that's right
We do the next segment of the show the next segment of the show. Yep. What is that? It's what we're reading. Yep. What we gonna read. Bye
It's what we reading time everybody you better believe it is
Now this is interesting because you were telling me this earlier
You've watched all six seasons of The Rookie starring Nathan Fillion.
I haven't seen that. No, that's a lie.
What is that about even? Because like he's a rookie beat cop.
Why have you brought this up?
And he's 45. Is it the joke that like, oh, he's older?
It must be.
Because like, no, I'm asking you.
So because he's 45 and that's old for a rookie.
Yeah, 40 year old John Nolan.
What are you doing here?
Think about him as 40 year old John Nolan moves to Los Angeles and hope he can be becoming a police officer.
Oh, that's good.
However, he's meant with skepticism from all corners and must battle many challenges along the way.
Because he's old.
I think so.
Now, does he, as it progresses, as he gets like five or six, does it like become, does he become like more of a mentor figure?
Or did he move up through the ranks?
Does he stay a beat cop or does he move into like being a detective?
I think he probably becomes a mentor to Sean Ashmore.
In fact, I know he does.
You know that because you watched.
Probably a mentor to True Valentino as well.
Okay, that's interesting.
Would you recommend this though?
I'd recommend it.
I think you'll be hooked by the opening theme, which is Kings and Queens by Chin Chin.
I think you'll be like, this is, this is, this is got a beat you can dance to.
Okay.
Yeah.
Do you think it's better than like Castle?
Yeah, easily.
Okay.
Yeah.
Okay, cool.
It's on Netflix as well.
Yeah, I guess.
All right.
I'll check it out.
Thanks, man.
What are you doing?
What's happening here?
What am I reading this week?
Thanks for your contribution. Why are you suddenly obsessed with a rookie? What are you doing?
I'm not.
You are though.
I haven't seen it.
I know, but why did... Very strange.
Very strange.
I've been to the Lord of the Rings and everything. We started at Caravan of Garbage. We did Fellowship
of the Ring. We're doing video games in between. So this week coming, we're doing the Two Towers
video game. Oh, also BigSandwich..co this week we did a Madam Web commentary.
And I forgot this, but last week was the podcast we did with We Got This Covered where you
bloody got me with Unlimited Dark Knight Rises ending explained content.
Yes, that's right.
Which really messed me up, Mason.
And actually it hurt me a lot.
I think you liked that though.
I did, it was fun.
Was it as good as The Rookie, rookie seasons 1 to 6 It was better than that
Considering I've never seen the rookie but I have experience making
Fun of you. Okay experience that cool man. I mean you're making fun of me now. I've seen the rookie
I've seen many wonderful works by Nathan Fillion. Yeah, and Sean Ashmore. Yeah. Yeah, but not that Sean Ashmore
He's one of the brothers. He's one of the brothers. I think he might be is he a rookie in it too. Then he's in it. I don't know
He's probably not a rookie guys, but speaking. I did actually watch two episodes of cross, which is good, isn't it?
It's pretty good. Say it's good. Well, look, it's good. It's so it's it's the latest
Adaptation of Alex cross Aaron cross is a James Patterson
The greatest adaptation of Alex Cross. Darren Cross.
Who's a James Patterson novel character.
I have not seen any of the previous ones, but this is Aldous Hodge.
Yes it is, yeah.
Who you would know from Black Adam, but also probably Better Things.
Yeah, that's right.
I watched a couple of episodes of that.
I think it is largely carried by...
Sorry, my phone just went off.
Yeah, you were looking at episodes of The Rookie.
No I wasn't.
You're looking at episodes of The Rookie.
No, sorry, you're not because you already finished it. That's exactly
what I can do. Always do a re-watch. I guess you could. Do a season, a six season marathon of it.
Hell yeah. The Rookie. I don't have time but I'll make time for The Rookie. What if a cop?
You know? Yeah exactly. What if a cop but 40? Yeah yeah yeah but I think it's pretty good.
I think again I think it might be carried by the charisma of the lead, but yeah, he was an invisible man. Oh, yeah
He was the invisible man's
Fighting partner. They have a fight
So he was a real fighting partner. Yeah
Also, I read I've been reading the newest series of DC's outsiders
Which so recently we talked about we talked about
We talked about the passing of John Cassidy, who was an artist.
My favorite thing that he did was a series called Planetary.
It was an image series about this team of explorers that they uncover the secret history of the world.
And it's like superheroes and pulp heroes and all this sort of stuff.
Anyway, and DC owns that now, but Outsiders is kind of a sequel to that.
Okay. But it's like a secret sequel. So it's a new, it's a new team. It's Batwoman, Luke
Fox is the son of Lucius Fox. Yeah. And the drummer. Luke Warm Fox. Yes, exactly. That's
exactly right. What's Luke Fox? Which is why he's wearing this big coat. Yeah, what's his
power? He's one of the Batman basically.
He's got like a nanosec batsuit now.
They all bloody do.
They all bloody do, don't they?
But they're uncovering new secrets of the DC Universe.
I heard about this recently and there's like a whole year of this.
It started at the start of this year.
And it's very good?
Yeah, so it's Batwoman, Luke Fox and and the drummer, who was a character in the original
Planetary, but it's a lady drummer now.
Lady drummer?
Lady drummer.
But it's good, man.
Okay.
Yeah, they're in space.
They're underwater.
Yeah.
They're doing adventures.
So would you say it's helpful, hindered by being minor DC characters?

studies, lifelong learning to stay forever unstuck. I think it's, I think it's helped.
Which bad girl was that?
Was that Kate?
That's Kate Kane.
The Ruby Rose one.
The Ruby Rose one, exactly.
For a hot minute there.
That's right.
Yeah.
It's good.
All right.
I'll check out both of your recommendations this week.
Thank you.
I'm very proud of them.
You should be.
I am. Should we move on to the next segment of the show? Move on to the next segment of
the show. But what is it going to do? It's called, it's going to do letters. It's going
to do letters. All right. And there's going to be a letters theme. Should I do the letters
theme now? This is the perfect opportunity for the letters theme. I'll do it now. Here
it is. The classic one was letters. Oh letters, we don't want to reach the show, it's easy.
Wow.
You just hashtag Weekly Planet Pod on Twitter.
That's right.
Or even easier, weeklyplanetpod at gmail.com or equally easy, nah, a little bit harder.
If you go to the Planet Broadcasting Great Mates group, I put a thread in every week
and because Twitter's fucked obviously. Yeah fucked obviously. So those are the options.
That's right. What do you got in terms of letters?
You can make a phone call.
You can make a phone call?
Ring ring, who's this?
Who is it?
Letters.
Oh, okay. Let's do some letters.
This is one from Colin.
You on the phone telling you?
Yeah, yeah, yeah. What do you got to say Colin? Oh, that's very nice to say about me. Very nice.
You have anything nice to say about James?
You'll just read the, I'll just read the letter.
Okay.
Okay.
All right.
It says finished all the pod.
The notepad's probably in the email.
The letter.
All right, we'll see.
Okay.
Hello boys.
Earlier this year I decided to try starting the pod over from the beginning, unless to
all the episodes I missed.
I've succeeded, except for the most recent episode, because I want to watch the movie
discussed and I want to hear your spoilery thoughts on it after I say it.
Well then you got to keep up man.
That's right. Still listening to about 500 episodes isn't too bad.
You guys have a problem with it too bad.
I'm working on self-confidence stuff and I'm telling myself I don't care what you think.
Well we're judging you.
That's right. Thank you for all the laughs.
While I absolutely love listening to all of the episodes, I'm kind of glad I can listen to other podcasts now, including catching up on Conan's show.
Here's to 500 more episodes or just keep going until the sun explodes.
Will do it, man.
Congratulations and good on you for working on confidence stuff.
That's right.
That's rad as hell, man.
We're already very confident.
We got so much confidence.
We're confident enough to put out a podcast and be like, people will like this.
That's right.
So confident we are.
Yeah.
We're as confident as the average person who has a podcast
Statistically too confident. Yes. In fact, we're probably less confident than a lot of people who probably have two or more podcasts Oh, maybe that is true. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah
Well, I got a letter here, but it's my letter
I mean it's from the the great mates group. Love it. You want to hear what that's about?
Yes from Tom Redhead who says has Batman become a Mary Sue type character as in just the best at everything for no reason other than he just is?
Every time I see any question about who would win between Batman and insert character here,
there are always a number of people who seem to earnestly respond that Batman would win
any situation because of who he is.
I don't read the comics, but it doesn't make it boring if a character is the best person
at everything and is able to do everything and win against everyone.
I think that's also blown out of proportion.
Batman will often get beaten up really severely.
He would, but I think it's probably is much more common back in the day.
Like pre 2000, Batman was constantly being beaten up.
Yeah.
Like there'd be an issue where he'd fight Deathstroke and Deathstroke would just beat him up.
Yeah.
And that would never happen now.
No, he would be like, I know what type of sword that is, Deathstroke. That's right. And isn't that embarrassing
for you, Deathstroke? I know where you bought your stupid sword from. You bought it at the
reject shop. And he's like, well, well, you know, it's, you know, it's the, you know,
it's the economic environment we're living in right now. Exactly. Yeah. Can't all be
billionaires, Bruce. Yeah. It's like fast fashion though, but for swords and that's not cold
That's right. You bought your sword. You bought a shine sword
What an absolute dumbass right? I don't like it. Well, and you'd think it wear out after five swings
But here's the thing it goes out of fashion. Yeah, that's the thing. Like a lot of people think it's swing
That's yeah, it goes out of fact. Let's that's the thing a lot of people like oh, yeah
You know you throw your sword in the wash You know ten times and it falls apart
Yeah, which is true, but actually the fashion for the fashion for swords changes so quickly that you actually throw it out before that
Yeah, that is interesting it's a mid swing he's like no
Should have brought a broadsword. Yeah, probably should have tarno. Yeah. Well you didn't I don't know
I don't yeah, I think also if you look at most superheroes
They're all pretty similar like Superman gets beaten and then he comes back. Yeah, I think they all do it.
I mean, but I see what you mean though. If you see a discussion, it's like Batman would beat
Hmm. Literally anything or anyone. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, but um, also I kind of feel like
It's like Superman, you know, in the current Batman storylines, there is a character called
Failsafe that he created.
It's sort of an Android AI guy who is better than him at everything.
And that's kind of how you have to do it.
You kind of have to raise the stakes.
And it's like people will look at Superman and go, okay, well, you know, he's invulnerable
to everything except Kryptonite and blah, blah, blah.
How can you beat him? Well, you just, you make the bad guys even bigger.
He's even bigger cape.
And whether you enjoy that kind of epic storyline.
Okay, right.
No, I do actually.
Yeah.
Like storylines.
Anyway, yeah.
Epic or otherwise.
Wow, wow, wow.
Cool.
His name is from Charlie.
Charlie.
He says, cheers lads.
Hey James and Mozo, just wanted to say I've recently started my post-grad dissertation about horror cinema.
Congratulations. So just wanted to say I've recently started my post-grad dissertation about horror cinema Congratulations until recently I didn't have a specific topic in mind until I was catching up on some recent caravan of garbage episodes
Hell yeah, so my very important year-long dissertation will now be called the thing the thing and the thing from another world
Whoa special effects in horror filmmaking. That's very good good choices
Yeah, I genuinely might end up citing you guys alongside works from qualified film theorists and stuff like that
You mean like us? Yeah. Yeah, so I just want to thank you too for the inspiration. Cheers lads Charlie from England
You're welcome. And we are we made those movies not the bad parts. That's true
We made all of the thing we made in the one in the 80s. Yeah, yeah from the other ones
We know yeah, yeah, yeah, and we could have we could have made more movies, but we didn't hmm
Well, that's great. That's cool. I like that idea of like, because it really does, it shows the evolution of filmmaking techniques over the decades.
So true.
Good choice, and we thought of it.
We all thought of it.
That's true.
This one's from Liam Burge who says, top contributor,
what toy did you ask Santa for but got a knockoff version? I always wanted Heelys
but got Velcro wheels to put on my shoes.
Interesting, that sounds unsafe.
Yeah.
Like where do they even Velcro to?
I guess that's a strip all the way around.
That sounds very dangerous.
I agree.
Now that I'm an adult and partner with myself, they don't make them in my size.
Well, they would.
They'd do custom ones, surely.
I bet they make adult size Heelys.
Yeah.
They would, surely.
Yeah.
Or what's your favorite comic you choose?
I'll do the knockoff one.
Okay.
The first Ninja Turtle I got, which was like a year after because you couldn't get them
anywhere, was a knockoff one.
Interesting.
And it didn't have like, you know, the rack of weapons.
Yeah.
And it had just the singular weapons.
Uh-huh.
But I was like, I do not care about this at all.
Like I got a Ninja Turtle.
Yeah, yeah, for sure. Exactly.
That's the main purpose.
I remember when I was a kid, you could, the GI Joe action figures.
Talking about cores.
The core.
Yeah, I had a bunch of them.
You could get them at the supermarket.
Yeah.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
They were pretty good quality though from memory, right?
Not as good, but they were okay, right?
I mean, I'm going to look them up right now.
I wonder if Secret Galaxy has done a video on the core.
Yeah.
Toy.
I always thought they were called Corpse.
Corpse.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I wonder who owns them now.
Good question.
Yeah.
Anyway, they um.
Are they Lannard?
Lannard.
Okay.
Are they?
Is that right?
Yeah, apparently.
Yeah, I had a Boomerang Billy.
Boomerang Billy.
Who did you have?
Boomerang Billy.
Did you really?
No, I don't know.
I don't remember.
I remember being like, this dude's a strand.
This is where.
I mean, looking at this, the quality is not that bad from what I can tell.
Yeah.
I remember the molding being a little.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I mean, yeah, there was more, there was more fine detail, like on the, on the
original GI Joe's, but there you go.
You know, I just, I just remember the core, but as a kid, I think you would have a mix.
Yeah, totally.
I would do some GI Joe's.
Oh my God.
Look at this guy.
This guy, God, he looks terrible. You know what? I I remember getting his hat off bald underneath. Being like whoa. Well
that's very Australian isn't it. You have to call him bald Billy. That is very Australian. Nice.
Ah yeah that's good stuff. I'm sure I had other stuff there was a bunch of stuff that was knock
off but I don't remember really carrying. Like something like heelies are different because
like that wouldn't work.
So there's a difference.
Oh yeah, no, true. Absolutely.
And here's one more email, James.
This one's from Jack.
Jack!
Hey James and Mace, I'm a massive fan of the show, also from Melbourne.
I'm from Melbourne.
I'm a high school teacher and your podcast is on every Friday morning on the way to work
and Monday, arvo on the way home.
There you go.
I was curious if there's any plans to cover more of the DC AU films from a few years ago.
After listening to your killing joke episode,
I'd love to hear some of your thoughts
on other animated adaptations like Flashpoint,
Hush, Red Hood and more.
We've done a commentary on Flashpoint.
Oh yeah, that's right.
I would definitely do more of those.
I think we'll probably, yeah,
we'll probably will come around to them.
I don't love them.
No, me neither, but I think,
but I bet there's some in there which are like, oh, this is interesting
I'm going to come when creature commandos comes out. Yeah, I think like what's Gotham by guy
Maybe we do like classic comics like Gotham by Gaslight
Another one to the other thing. Yeah, and just like and do some big stories from there
Yeah, like even you know what? I would like to do like Batman you aren't in the Dark Knight Returns
I'd like to do like stuff like that. You know the thing about it is, is that I kind of feel like...
There are some good ones though. Yeah, but they were all, what I don't like about them is that they're all in that generic DC New 52 style.
Yeah, they become that though. Yeah, like if you, but if you get like a Gotham by Gaslight,
it doesn't have the Gotham by Gaslight. Yes. Because you know
the the covers of that mic was Mike Mignola. I can't remember the interior
artist with Gotham by Gaslight was. That was me. Good job. It was really distinctive. Yeah it wasn't my best work.
But it was still very distinctive. It's actually kind of shitty now that I think about it.
Would you prefer to do it in the new 52 style? No I just kind of phoned it in. I was like fuck you guys.
Whatever. Yeah absolutely. Just knock it off with a paycheck.
But the thing is that they, you know, you want to see that converted to live, not to
live action, but to anime.
But the problem is that it's then the DC has to develop a whole new animation style for
that.
That's right.
It's easy.
And, you know, for other things like that, but it's so it's easy to just have the same
style template for everything,
which I don't care for. I'm excited. People don't love the Justice League crisis. There's been three.
People do not love those at all. Yeah, yeah, and yet they planned them out. I would be excited to look at the
new frontier. Okay, yeah. The Darwin Cook one that's set between the golden and silver ages, I think.
Looking at these, Christ on Infinite Earth part 1 88% part 2 17%
17% Wow drop right off. I don't know. I would definitely look at these just even see all right Maybe I'm maybe I'm no, I think not it. I'm not saying that would be good
I just meant I think it could be interesting to just assess and be like why why absolutely
All right ring ring. Hello. That's the show. It's the show. Yeah, you got to finish the show
Wrap it up. Okay. Okay. Bye. Okay. Bye. Bye
That was me on the phone just then calling you to tell you to wrap up. Oh, it was the show
No, the show can't call. Yeah, I didn't think so. I thought I was going crazy. No, thanks folks
Thank you so much for listening. We absolutely appreciate it. Thank you to the show. Ring ring hello! Hello. It's the show here. This is the show. This is actually the show. The personification of the show.
That's right! Would you like me to wrap you up? I'll kill you! What? Why? Yeah I'm real I'm a man also.
But why do you want to kill me? And I'm big! I can tell you've got a big man's voice. Yeah no not
just big I'm like a big as big as a building. Actually now that I think about it you sound
like a small man putting on a big man's voice. No no no no no no no I reckon I could take you in a fire
No, no no no no I say now. Oh, I don't even I'll be there you wait
You don't even know when I'm gonna get yeah, okay, but you'll see me coming cuz I'm so big
You know what I think I'll wrap up this show
I won't sneak and sneak up and crawl into your nose cuz I'm big Wow
All right, bye. Bye the show.
Anyway, folks, thank you for listening.
You believe that?
