Starting point is 00:00:00 FX's The Veil explores the surprising and fraught relationship between two women who play a deadly game of truth and lies on the road from Istanbul to Paris and London. One woman has a secret, the other a mission to reveal it before thousands of lives are lost. FX's The Veil, starring Elizabeth Moss, is now streaming on Disney+. Welcome back everybody to another episode of the Weekly Planet, official podcast of ComicBookMovie.com. My name is James, editor at that website. With me as always is my co-host, Nick Mason. Oh, that's good.
Starting point is 00:00:49 That's you doing that. That was Joseph Lisk, who does the What We Read and What We Gonna Read theme. Oh, sure. And he sent that in. Great. He lives in Sydney as well, he told me. Huh, we live in Sydney, as far as our listeners know.
Starting point is 00:01:02 That's not true. We don't. But isn't that cool? Yes. Do you want to hear it again? I guess so. Great. I don't remember what it's from.
Starting point is 00:01:12 No, neither do I. But I love it. But I assume at some point I pretended to be a trumpet player. A little bit of fanfare. What's been going on? Nothing. We're going in this rough. Yes.
Starting point is 00:01:23 Not because we've had a big night or anything, but we just... I was up till 3.30 making a video about Terminator Genisys. Oh, sure. Well, I wasn't. So I'm fresh as a daisy, but then we went to a popular fried chicken fast food franchise before this and we're not feeling good. There's a reason we don't do that normally. Yeah. We'll do it again next week, though. My guts! Yeah. Anyway. Anyway, time to week though. My guts! Yeah.
Starting point is 00:01:46 Anyway. Anyway, time to deliver some fresh comic book movie news. That's what we're all about. Yeah. And then a topic or something. Depending on the week.
Starting point is 00:01:53 Depending on our mood. Depending on our guts. This might be the week where we just give up. After many months of speculation, rumours of whack. It was KFC.
Starting point is 00:02:03 Yeah. Look, they're not giving us any money to tell you we had a horrible time at KFC. So I'm just going to put it out there. Benedict Cumberbatch has been confirmed as Doctor Strange. Yeah, I saw that. Yeah. So that's pretty good.
Starting point is 00:02:15 That is good. I'm 100% behind that. Me too. Despite what I may have said in previous podcasts, I can't remember. His featureless face. Oh, yeah. I did say that, didn't I? I think it's a better idea than Joaquin Phoenix
Starting point is 00:02:25 you probably are I think he's more fun yeah I think you're right there I never even factored that in but you're right like on Sherlock I'm you know
Starting point is 00:02:32 I go in and out as a fan of Sherlock generally but he is like he's totally okay with poking fun at himself yeah he can't say penguin
Starting point is 00:02:39 apparently oh really yeah he was at like a like an opening of a penguin like a documentary about penguins oh no he's in the Penguins of Madagascar. That's the one, yeah. And he can't say penguin. He says penguin. That's pretty great. He seems like the kind of guy that could say penguin though. Yeah, I know, right? It's weird, isn't it? That's great. I know. I think it's a
Starting point is 00:02:58 good idea. I still wonder whether they're going to go British or whether they're going to give him a terrible American accent. I've seen him do an American accent. It was in a Meryl Streep movie or something. It's like a Southern American accent. How'd that go? Not great. It's kind of like the David Tennant kind of American accent. You know, the broad kind of... Yeah, okay, yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:14 I can't do it, obviously. I only do New York. Correct. Perfectly. Yeah, but you know what? He'll be great. I reckon they're going to do British. Yeah, I think they should.
Starting point is 00:03:22 I mean, he's never... He's from Westchester, New York, I think, Doctor Strange? Yeah. And he was in the New York University crew with everybody else in the Marvel Universe. Yeah. All the Smarties. All the Smarties. But I reckon they'll just make him British.
Starting point is 00:03:35 Yeah. Yeah. Why not? Easy as. Do you reckon he can grow a sweet beard? Yeah. Did you actually see they released a promo image for the Sherlock Holmes Christmas special? Yes.
Starting point is 00:03:44 And they're in period attire? Costume well that's yeah unless you know what would be cool once somebody gets a blow to the head and imagines them back in the you know sure either way i'll tell you what though i'd like to see like just uh you know like it's just like an alternative reality one where it's like the real kind of sherlock holmes i'd like to see how they'd handle that the real sherlock holmes you're not like to see how they'd handle that. The real Sherlock Holmes. You're not a mean idiot. You're saying you want Cumberbatch and what's-his-face, Freeman, as Holmes and Watson in the era in which the books were written.
Starting point is 00:04:16 Just a once-off, yeah. Okay, sure. What do you reckon? Yeah, okay. You know how sometimes they'll make Batman like a knight? Sure, yeah. Or a pirate or whatever. Or a vampire.
Starting point is 00:04:24 Or a vampire. Or a pastry chef. Or a bear. He might be a bear sometimes. So, yeah, why knight. Sure, yeah. Or a pirate or whatever. Or a vampire. Or a vampire. Or a pastry chef. Or a bear. He might be a bear sometimes. So yeah, why not? Yeah, okay. Yeah, but they probably, you're right,
Starting point is 00:04:31 it's probably a costume party. Yeah. Or, yeah, somebody gets a blow to the head. Hollow deck. Yeah, hollow deck, certainly. Somebody gets a blow to the head and they think they're in medieval.
Starting point is 00:04:39 Yep. Medieval times. Yeah, medieval. Sherlock Holmes times. Whatever year that was or the or it happens in the year that era the late you know the 19th century
Starting point is 00:04:50 yeah and then Martin Freeman wakes up and he's actually been watching Sherlock Holmes a game of shadows on blu-ray and he's like oh I get it now that's like a life on
Starting point is 00:05:00 Mars kind of twist yeah the American version that is we talked about the end of that let's not do it now okay yeah let's not do it now. Okay, yeah. Let's not. Another day.
Starting point is 00:05:06 Yes. Deadpool begins production in March. There you go. Ryan Reynolds is set to start. I'm not sure if that's a lock yet, but that's pretty much a given. Like, who else are they going to get? Bradley Cooper? Yeah, Bradley Cooper would work.
Starting point is 00:05:20 Actually, he'd be pretty good. But yeah, I want to seeynolds do like a good have a shot at a good comic book character because he is not bad no certainly but he but he gets maybe he's a bad guy though maybe that's why he gets getting bad yeah see good there we go nothing uh so yeah i'm okay with that someone keeps writing in i can't remember who sorry if i've forgotten your name but keeps asking for us to start a petition to get Deadpool to be R-rated. I don't think they will. I don't think we've got the juice for that.
Starting point is 00:05:49 Also, we don't have the juice. Also, there's probably a hundred of those already, right? Probably. But I think if they were smart about it, they'd do what they did with the Wolverine, where it would be bloodless and then R-rated cut. Not smart about it, but I just think that's what they'll do. If they do that, I'm waiting for Blu-ray. No, you won't.
Starting point is 00:06:03 Because you have to do it for this podcast. God damn it. You got me again. I just felt like's what they'll do. If they do that, I'm waiting for Blu-ray. No, you won't. Because you have to do it for this podcast. God damn it. You got me again. I just felt like the boss then. I was like, no, you don't. I now got to work on Christmas. Hey, I've got some news. Okay.
Starting point is 00:06:16 Luke Evans won't be the crow. I got that here. Remember that non-news from before? I do remember that. Maybe Luke Evans will probably be the crow. I've actually got a tweet about this. Actually, it might be an email. Hey, I'm a big fan.
Starting point is 00:06:26 I've seen all your videos. I've been listening to a lot of your podcasts. I hope you guys keep up the great work. Tell Nick Mason he's the crow now. Yes. In many ways, we're all the crow now. Indeed. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:38 So they've thrown that open to the public. Who should they get to be the crow now? Marilyn Manson. Yes. But makeup free. Just that weird face he's got. Weird featureless face. He's the cumberbatch of the music industry.
Starting point is 00:06:50 Definitely. Okay, so who do you think they should get, I guess? I don't know. Well, again, somebody said Bradley Cooper. Yep. Surprisingly. What about Rich Evans? What about Rich Evans from Red Letter Media instead of Luke Evans?
Starting point is 00:07:01 Oh, yeah. Just a different Evans. Yeah. Okay, sure. How about Lee Evans? British comedian who was in Mouse Hunt? Don't know.
Starting point is 00:07:10 I haven't seen that. I heard that's not a bad movie though. I heard it's Home Alone-esque in a good way. Look, it's been a long time. Sure. Long time between Mouse Hunts. Yeah, okay.
Starting point is 00:07:18 So that's... They'll probably go someone smaller than Luke Evans I guess, I don't know. Physically? No. I mean like a smaller actor. Like a Peter Dinklage?
Starting point is 00:07:28 Like a Dinklage, yes. Okay. Or a Verne Troyer. Oh, yeah. Nice. Okay. Well, look, it'd be interesting to see how that plans out. Either way, Luke Evans would be a great Deadpool.
Starting point is 00:07:40 They've cast Jessica Jones. Oh, yes. In next year's Netflix series. Jessica Jones. Jessica Jones, which is next year's Netflix series Jessica Jones Jessica Jones Which is going to be Girl Detective Girl Detective Which is going to be
Starting point is 00:07:50 In the Marvel Cinematic Universe The same with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. And Peggy Carter And all the Marvel movies And the upcoming Daredevil
Starting point is 00:07:56 Miniseries-y Netflix-y show The actress Cut to the chase Who is it? Oh you were just going to say Sorry Kristen Ritter
Starting point is 00:08:02 You familiar with her? Oh yeah Okay A lot of people aren't on board Because they're like, she's not super hot. I mean, it's all a matter of perspective and what you find appealing. I think she's a good actress. Yeah. Did I say actress or actor?
Starting point is 00:08:14 I'm confused. It's all actor now. Everybody's an actor now. Can I not say it? What if I say it by accident? No, that's probably fine. Okay, good. Yeah, Kristen.
Starting point is 00:08:21 I'm sorry. I had a blank there. Kristen Ritter. Well, that's not who i picture when i think of jessica jones but she's great yeah she's great in breaking bad she is she was great at being let die by walter white i'll spoil the alert it's too late it is you can edit that out it's been no it's been many years it has yeah there's a two-week rule on that remember we don't intentionally spoil things but too bad if we do okay i guess yeah yeah so that's pretty good
Starting point is 00:08:44 looking forward to seeing where they go's pretty good i'm looking forward to seeing where they go with that so i'm assuming they're going dead or then jessica jones and they're also saying that halo's halo night falls mike colter is the top choice for luke cage so he looks luke cagey okay great very cagey so if you you know i think he'd be i mean i've we've talked about halo before and how we haven't seen that show. Yes. And that we probably won't. Unlikely to see that show. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:07 How many episodes is out? 42. No, incorrect. I don't know, maybe five? On an actual network. I think we talked about it. Isn't it on like an Xbox television or something? I don't know either.
Starting point is 00:09:19 You'd think we'd know. Why are we talking about it then? I don't know. I just... Look, I don't know. I'm going to drink from this bottle. Great. that's great all that bond 24 has oh there's big news there's a title yeah specter yeah which stands for or do you know because i don't okay it's it's special yep Oh, hang on. Wait. Special Executive? Correct.
Starting point is 00:09:47 For counter-terrorism? It's counter-intelligence. Counter-intelligence, terror, revenge and extortion. Yes. Which is clearly made up. Like, they've clearly, they've gone, you know what, Spectre's a cool name. Like, it's the terrorist organisation, so clearly Spectre's a cool name. Because they've taken the S and the P from special.
Starting point is 00:10:03 Yes, exactly. And then it says for counter-intelligence. And they've dropped the S and the P from special. Yes, exactly. And then the E. And then it says four counterintelligence. And then it drops the four and just taken the C on the counterintelligence. Yep. Dead terrorism. But it's clearly got to be counter-hyphen intelligence. Yeah. Yeah, exactly.
Starting point is 00:10:14 So, there we go. Technically, it should be Secchi Tree. It should be Secchi Tree. Secchi Tree. Yeah. Bond's greatest... Nemesis. Secchi Tree
Starting point is 00:10:25 So for those who don't know I guess they're like the Hydra I mean, who wouldn't know that? Well, you may not know because Oh, they changed it, didn't they? Well, because for a long time the ownership of a lot of James Bond stuff has been split up among a number of different people
Starting point is 00:10:40 and Spectre went to some other idiot Whoever made Never Say Never Again. Yeah, they got Spectre. And so they've had to use... I can't, I don't know. Quantum. Quantum, okay.
Starting point is 00:10:52 Quantum, there we go. Okay, sure. But I think there was even one before that they used as well. But anyway, yeah. Like, in between. But yeah. So it's good to see Spectre. Die Another Day Incorporated.
Starting point is 00:11:02 Exactly. Was the name of that terrorist organisation, yes. They've revealed a whole bunch of cast um monica belushi i believe yep she's gonna be one of the bond girls and moriarty from sherlock i can't remember the actor's name oh yes yes that guy's gonna be the main ish villain along with christoph waltz christoph waltz is gonna be his name is oberhauser in the reveal but he's gonna be he's definitely gonna be yeah and i He's definitely going to be Blofeld. I'll stake my reputation on it. My non-existent reputation.
Starting point is 00:11:35 So, yeah, this seems like it's going to be a very kind of Bond-y Bond film. Yes. Compared to the other Bond films of late. Correct. It's going to be more Bond-y than ever. Yeah. Purvis and Wade are back to punch up some jokes. Great. So that's really...
Starting point is 00:11:44 They're the writers, by the way. They wrote everything from, I think, maybe Goldeneye up until the last one. Yes. But depending on who the co-writer is, depends on how well that goes. Sure. I think the guy who wrote... I can't remember. Whoever worked on Casino Royale, he was a very good writer.
Starting point is 00:12:01 And a lot of him shines through in Casino Royale. Because then you look at Die Another Day, and that's just a train wreck. I think maybe that Purvis and Wade just sit in their office, and they wait for the script to come in, and they go, Okay! Tick. So, yeah. So, yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:18 So, that's pretty good. All of that. I'm looking forward to that, sure. Yeah, yeah. It's actually coming out late next year, and they haven't started filming yet. So, they're really going to punch this out, which is good. Nothing like a rushed movie production, I'd say. Still, it's meant...
Starting point is 00:12:30 What it'll be. The last one came out in 2012, so it'll be three years. Pretty good. There we go. All right, so it's high time for a James Bond retrospective episode where we talk about every James Bond film, right? You're looking forward to that. The Roger Moors.
Starting point is 00:12:45 I don't want to do that. I don't want to do that. I don't want to do it. But I'll do it. Great. If people want us to do it, I'll do it. Absolutely. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:52 We'll maybe go eras. Yeah, okay. And the months leading up, every now and then we'll go, we'll talk Connery, we'll talk Roger Moore, we'll talk whatever. But, you know.
Starting point is 00:12:59 There'll be an episode where I just sing all the theme songs. It's going to be great. Could you sing the Madonna Die Another Day? I'd rather not. I think I die. It's going to be great. Could you sing Madonna Die Another Day? I'd rather not. I think I die another day. Yep, I can do it. The one that sounds like
Starting point is 00:13:14 a cat fighting a guitar. Yes, that one. Wonder Woman is getting a writer. That's a relief. Yes, it is. It's the person, Jason Fuch.
Starting point is 00:13:25 His name's spelled F-U-C-H-S. So he probably pronounces it Fuch. Yes, probably. We know how it's pronounced. That's a tough name. That's a tough name to grow up with, right? Definitely. But good for him.
Starting point is 00:13:43 He actually, he's writing, oh, he wrote Pan, you know, the upcoming Peter Pan gritty reboot. Oh, sure, great. With Hugh Jackman as Blackbeard, where... Blackbeard, not Hook. No, because Hook is Peter Pan's friend, played by the guy from Tron, not Jeff Bridges, the young guy. Is this a prequel?
Starting point is 00:14:00 Yes. Ugh. A gritty reboot. A Pan prequel. Ugh. Ugh. Well, look reaper. A pancrake. Ugh. Ugh. Well, look, we've had pan. Guys, there's no reason you should want to be a kid forever.
Starting point is 00:14:11 It's ridiculous. It's a fate worse than death. What about if you lived in, like, a sweet-ass island and you could fly and you'd fight pirates all day? Um... How many pirates could you fight, though? Yeah, exactly. How many of your friends could you bury? Oh, that's a really good point.
Starting point is 00:14:26 Just flying around, dropping them in ditches, you know? Because otherwise the pirates will get you. If you land, the pirates will kill you. So, yeah. I mean, I haven't seen Pan, so we'll see how that plays out. See how it pans out. Well done. Play the theme!
Starting point is 00:14:41 Play my theme! Play it! I'll do it again. Say the thing you said. I'll say the thing I said. And then we do this. I have to find it. Oh, jeez.
Starting point is 00:14:53 Just email it to me and I'll do it. All right, here we go. Okay, say the thing. We'll see how that goes, I guess. See how it pans out. I'll have this ready now. I can't though because I've got to read the... Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:08 And you can't leave me in control of that because I'll just do it every time. I'll do it literally every time I say anything. Okay. So that's great. Deadpool, yep. Terminator Genisys. Yes. New trailer.
Starting point is 00:15:23 Yes. I did a video on it. You also did a video on it. No. Incorrect. Yes. I did a video on it. You also did a video on it. No, incorrect. Well, look, opinions divided. A lot of people are just excited to see another Terminator movie. Some people are like ruining the franchise. It's not great at the moment, the franchise.
Starting point is 00:15:36 It's in dire straits. Some would say it's already ruined. Yes. Some would say it's ruined by when Arnold Schwarzenegger put on the stripper glasses in Terminator 3 and they were like stars. See, a lot of people hate that. I don't hate Terminator 3. I think there's some good moments in it.
Starting point is 00:15:51 I think as a nice kind of little added extra, if you don't take it too seriously, it's not too bad. Because you can't follow up Terminator 2. No, you're right. Yeah. Absolutely right. And Salvation is... Garbage. Garbage.
Starting point is 00:16:04 And makes no sense. And makes no sense. And makes no sense. I mean, you know what? Some people would argue that neither of the first two Terminators make any sense because you can't go back in time and become... A Terminator. You can't send your own dad back in time to create you. It doesn't work.
Starting point is 00:16:17 But I don't care. Yeah. For some reason, even though I'm against Looper and Interstellar's time travel craziness, I don't like those. It's fine. You know why? don't like those. It's fine. You know why? Because Terminators. Yeah, exactly.
Starting point is 00:16:28 Because Terminators. I think this trailer looks really great. I've been completely against this since I've heard about it. Yes. And then I forget about it and you remind me again and I'm upset about it. And then I forget and it follows on and on. But I saw this looks really good. I like the...
Starting point is 00:16:43 I'm surprised how much you enjoyed it i'm i'm excited for old arnold schwarzenegger versus 80s arnold schwarzenegger that looks good you know what though my brother actually said this to me which one the one you don't like right that they've spoiled a lot of twists in this yeah i think imagine if you went into that movie not knowing that that was going to happen yeah that would have been amazing well this is going to go in this is going to go in the the bucket of the three movies you show to someone who hasn't seen any of them yes you show them all in the row yeah yeah exactly even salvation no that's out it's going to be trilogy great yeah hopefully what about this it looks more cgi than
Starting point is 00:17:22 the other ones yeah especially the future stuff I'm gonna say though I don't think that the liquid metal effect looks as good as in Terminator 2 I agree with you it's odd
Starting point is 00:17:32 why is that? I don't know is it too shiny? and too kind of I reckon it's the idea is now that that effect was so amazing
Starting point is 00:17:42 at the time yeah that people I reckon visual effects people jumped on it they're like we have to find a way to do this just in like make a plug-in for it let's let's put it in the tv show alex mac correct exactly yes but i think they so they'll be like well we need to be able to just make a plug-in you you draw the line or whatever you push a button and you can make that effect happen yeah and they've done that and they've made it so you you can do it and they've they've tweaked that effect so now you can just do it whenever and it doesn't look it
Starting point is 00:18:13 doesn't look as good okay sure i don't know if any of that's true you're against it basically if the visual effects artist on terminator genesis could email in let us know please tell us why you're not as good as not as good as a film from 1991 but it looks it's fine like it looks but I like
Starting point is 00:18:29 that new Terminator guy as well I think he looks the part and he could be a different model or he could be the same model
Starting point is 00:18:36 who's just changed his face but I would say they're just gonna say he's a different kind of looking one because there are different looking
Starting point is 00:18:41 Terminators they don't all look like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Robert Patrick yeah and I think that's all the terminators in the movies anyway yeah sarah connor chronicles got a bit of a mix yeah i don't think that the t-1000 has a definitive like a like a predefined look yeah i think it's i think it's just whatever copy happened to find first but no he when he comes back in time he's got that look that's
Starting point is 00:19:02 true he does then i can't explain it. I choose not to. Explain why he has the same cop uniform. Oh, good point. I don't know. Yeah. But yeah, I like the idea of an old Terminator going back and raising Sarah Connor. That is good.
Starting point is 00:19:17 And then just messing up the timeline. You know what, though? This is the last time a series can do this timeline altering thing. I think you're probably true. This is it. You had your shot. Yeah. Who did it? Star Trek did it. X-Men did it. Are you saying this is the last franchise that's allowed to do this timeline altering thing. I think you're probably true. This is it. You had your shot. Yeah. Who did it? Star Trek did it.
Starting point is 00:19:25 X-Men did it. Are you saying this is the last franchise that's allowed to do this? Yes. What's going to happen if somebody else does it? I'm just saying people will be like, no.
Starting point is 00:19:32 What if there's a gritty time travel reboot of Alex Mack? Adventures of Alex Mack. I'd be happy to see that universe again. What if there's a gritty reboot time travel reimagining of My Secret Identity with Jerry O'Connell?
Starting point is 00:19:44 Where he flies around with spray cans. Yeah, I'm good with that. That's fine. a gritty reboot time travel reimagining of my secret identity with jerry o'connell where he flies around with like spray cans yeah i'm good with that that's fine great but like i don't know i say if they i can if they do back the future again that's this is how they do it they just rewrite the timeline yeah maybe okay yeah but it looks like there's a lot of time jumping in this though because it looks like they come to the present day yep there's some future stuff yeah yeah they got the she doesn't seem to what's her face what's her name uh sarah connor emily amelia clark yeah she she looks great she definitely looks the part yeah yeah definitely but she doesn't seem to age from the the 80s from to the modern era no no because there's a bit in the trailer where you
Starting point is 00:20:18 see that they've kind of got this makeshift kind of time machine and i think they go forward yeah and that that happens in the sarah connor chronicles they go forward like eight years or something uh-huh so i think in the in sarah connor chronicles they kind of they're like we can't make a show from 1997 yeah we can't like there's gonna be we don't have the money to build in all the anachronisms we can't yeah like have people on giant mobile phones and stuff like that we're just gonna have to bump it to yeah it's production wise it's just much easier yeah exactly yeah um what else is in that trailer let me think you know what the bit that i was like uh don't like that the the bus flip really that that is i feel that's the that is now the new that's the pinnacle of vehicle flips now but like i know looking at that i'm like you
Starting point is 00:20:58 can't physically do that yeah like ever since the nolan truck flip yes where they physically did it yep there's also a truck flip in Terminator 3 if you look at that now it's clearly CGI but you compare that truck flip some of that looks pretty good that car chase didn't Arnold Schwarzenegger put in his own money yeah he did
Starting point is 00:21:16 there was a bit where he swings on a crane that smashes through a building he paid for that because they were like we'll do it CGI and he's like no here's the money there you go do it alright there's a good bit in Terminator 3 you're right you've proven me wrong
Starting point is 00:21:27 and the big quick play your own theme tune you don't have one it's only me ha ha no it's mine you can't have it so what was i gonna yeah i don't know i guess we should probably talk about this less or more what do you reckon more every every week okay cool bus i'm sort of on board with the bus but yeah doesn't it look are you saying that's completely cgi it would have to be you can't flip a bus that high i reckon you can flip a bus pretty high no what if you make it out of plywood no and you put on a catapult yes thank you it's all i wanted an admission yeah that an implausible scenario that I've invented could be possible sure and also
Starting point is 00:22:06 I just wanted to say they've matched up the look of the 80s pretty well yep like there's a whole lot of stuff like that you see
Starting point is 00:22:12 a lot of the shots are very similar and in my video I did like a little bit of side by side comparison we even got Kyle Reese's scars seem to line up oh yeah okay
Starting point is 00:22:20 so there's little details like that which are really good who's playing John Connor in this? he's Australian yeah he's the Planet of the Apes guy oh yeah Jason Clarke Oh, yeah, okay. So there's little details like that, which are really good. Who's playing John Connor in this? He's Australian. Yeah, no, he's the Planet of the Apes guy.
Starting point is 00:22:28 Oh, yeah, okay. Jason Clarke? There you go, yeah. Jeremy Clarkson? Great. Jeremy Clarkson. Jeremy Clarkson from Tokyo, yeah. He's got that sweet John Connor scar. Yeah, of course he does.
Starting point is 00:22:35 I wonder if this is saying that Salvation still counts, though. Because Salvation's set in like 2020, maybe, or 2019. Yeah, and 2029 is the time travel yeah that's the that's the key yeah for the time travel so interest interestingly though mason oh yeah i also mentioned this in my video go on the opening scene from this trailer which i think is going to be opening scene for the movie that was going to be the original opening scene from terminator 2 right yeah where they they bust in with kyle reese and john connor that's in the novelization is it yes really awesome yes and so what is it they send he sends kyle reese back and then They bust in with Kyle Reese and John Connor. That's in the novelization. Is it? Yes. Really? Awesome.
Starting point is 00:23:05 Yes. And so what is it? They send, he sends Kyle Reese back and then immediately he sees that they've sent another Terminator to him as a kid. Yes, exactly. Yeah. And then they put in the article. That's pretty much it. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:23:14 Yeah. Cool. I was going to say something else about that. Nah, don't worry about it. Yeah. Time travel? Oh, question mark. It's interesting.
Starting point is 00:23:24 God damn it. Yeah. I'm also looking forward to... If they're going to do time travel forward, I don't think... Maybe Schwarzenegger doesn't go time travel forward? No, he doesn't because his hair's grey. His hair's grey.
Starting point is 00:23:35 Yeah, so he must stay behind for whatever reason. But yeah, they last about 120 years or something like that. I was looking around, so he's fine. He's got the same strength or whatever. He's just ages. All right. That's The Terminator. That's pretty good. Oh, man. I was looking around, so he's fine. Yeah, we... He's got the same strength or whatever. He's just ages. All right, that's the Terminator. Great. That's pretty good.
Starting point is 00:23:47 Oh, man, I had something else to say, and I think it was interesting. Oh, well. Just play the theme tune again. No. Okay. Cliff Curtis. Oh, yes.
Starting point is 00:23:58 He's going to be headlining the new Walking Dead spin-off. Cliff Curtis from many things. I'm trying to think of an example. He's a New Zealand guy. He's in Once Were Warriors. He's a generically kind of foreign looking dude. Do you know what I mean? That's racist. No, I mean like
Starting point is 00:24:13 that's how they use him. They'll be like, is he Middle Eastern? He's multi-ethnic. Thank you. I know that guy. No, multi-ethnic's not. I did not know he was from New Zealand. Yeah, he is. Yeah, yeah. But he's done a bunch, multi-ethnic's not. I did not know he was from New Zealand. Yeah, he is. Yeah, yeah. Okay.
Starting point is 00:24:25 But he's done a bunch of stuff. He's in, like, Three Kings. Yep. He's, like, played, like, a New York cop. Oh, yes. Yeah, he's done a bunch of stuff. Yeah, I remember he got voice acting training from us. He was in Live Free or Die Hard.
Starting point is 00:24:37 Yeah. He was in 10,000 BC. Yeah. There you go. These are all out of my memory. Not true. Oh, Terminator thing, just quickly. He was in Sunshine. Yeah, he was. Your you go. These are all out of my memory. Oh, Terminator thing, just quickly. He was in Sunshine.
Starting point is 00:24:48 Yeah, he was. Your favourite film. I fucking love Sunshine. Okay, I'm going to go back to Terminator just quickly. Originally, they were going to make the T-1000 the Michael Biehn character. He was going to have Michael Biehn's look. Oh, yes. So, Terminator 2 starts off and you think, why is Michael Biehn still alive, the Kyle Reese guy? And it turns out that it's not him.
Starting point is 00:25:05 It's the T-1000 who's taken on his look to trick Sarah Connor. Right. But they thought that's too confusing for audiences. They've already got the Arnold twist where he's a good guy. They don't know if they could handle that. But that would have been great. That would have been a double twist because they meet in the corridor the same and you're like, what? What?
Starting point is 00:25:29 That's great. what that's great maybe that's i mean back in the day he didn't have the incredible surround sound systems that we have now so i think that the the audio of the film would have just been drowned out by 100 people in cinema so yeah if you were a fan of the walking dead you'd be happy with that wouldn't you maybe yeah there you go. What is it? Is he a character in The Walking Dead? No, no, no. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:25:48 So he's a new guy. Spin off. Well, The Walking Dead is like the most... He's going to be the Mork from Ork of Walking Dead. Yes, exactly. They're going to put him in, spin him off. Spin him off. But he's...
Starting point is 00:25:56 The Joanie or Chachi. Yes. Did that show go well? The Frasier. Yes. Frasier Crane. The After Mash. Yes.
Starting point is 00:26:04 There we go. Yeah. The Walking Dead is the most successful, I think, cable TV show of all time or something. So obviously this makes sense. Well, I've certainly never heard of it. So it makes sense that they do this. So that's great. I mean, I'll want to talk about The Walking Dead in a bit. But are people just watching Walking Dead because...
Starting point is 00:26:21 Yes. Yeah, because it's still going. It's Lost Syndrome, right? Yes, it is, yeah. So are those people going to jump to this spin-off just because it's a new thing? Yeah, yeah. I hope it's better,
Starting point is 00:26:34 because I think it would mean that Walking Dead has to lift its game. Right, okay. There's a lot of good stuff in The Walking Dead. There's a lot of Deadwood, as far as characters and story goes. Are there any actors from the show Deadwood? I know, I haven't seen a lot of Deadwood.
Starting point is 00:26:45 I bet there's at least 10. If I'm proven right, I'm the best. We play that theme later. Batman v Superman and Ant-Man news. Oh yes. They're combining the universes. Oh fantastic. At long last.
Starting point is 00:26:57 But they've both wrapped filming. Wow. There you go. Look forward to Ant-Man about mid next year. Look forward to Batman v Superman in 2016. Oh jeez. Why do they... Oh, it's finished.
Starting point is 00:27:08 God. Just sit on it, mate. Just put it out. I don't care if the special effects aren't finished. I want to see the acting. Yeah. The acting. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:27:18 The car. Yep. See that? The car. Yep. The cape. The cape. Normally, he doesn't have the cape because they CGI the cape
Starting point is 00:27:25 right a lot of the static stuff he'll wear it but if he's like floating about they'll CGI that cape that's what I want I want to see him
Starting point is 00:27:30 static cape and then he goes to fly and there's no cape you want to see like the green screened shoulder pads that he probably wears but they put the cape in later
Starting point is 00:27:38 so that's pretty good great also it came out Evangeline Lilly was talking about Ant-Man and I didn't write this down, so this might be wrong. That, just saying the reason why Edgar Wright left is his vision for the film was very different. Because this started way back in like 2006 before the shared universe.
Starting point is 00:27:54 And so that just wasn't really meshing with the MCU. Right, right, right. So that's kind of why there was a splitting of ways. Okay, sure. Yeah, which, you know, okay. I understand it, but it is what it is. Yeah. Also, Robert Orsi, again, not down here,
Starting point is 00:28:11 he wrote Spider-Man 2 and most of the Transformers and Star Trek Into Darkness. Think of a movie where someone has magic blood. Yep. Oh, he's got that. He's written that movie. Maybe that's his thing, yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:28:23 He apparently is not directing Star Trek 3 anymore. He dropped out of Power Rangers to do it. Yep. And, he's got that. He's written that movie. Maybe that's his thing, yeah. Yeah. He apparently is not directing Star Trek III anymore. He dropped out of Power Rangers to do it. Yep. And he's out, which I think is good, because he's never directed anything before, and he's not that great a writer. I'm sorry, but he's not. Wow. Wow.
Starting point is 00:28:37 Wow. So, and they think Edgar Wright might be, or they want Edgar Wright. That's a rumour. I would say that. Yeah. Is that the Simon Pegg connection? Could be probably it's probably that probably that yeah so yeah that's again that's how holland works yeah that's why mark webb directed amazing spider-man etc etc so odd yeah suicide squad though oh yes cast a lock 2016 yeah uh a few months after batman
Starting point is 00:29:02 v superman do you want to go through the cast off the top of my head no I can do it I'm asking I can do it okay right okay good that would be better that would be better
Starting point is 00:29:08 thank you yes now this is the first one I'm going to mention here this is the one I think people are most upset about oh you've ordered them you've put them in order
Starting point is 00:29:15 no this is just what came to my head Will Smith is dead shot yeah yeah totally people hate that or at minimum people are like I like Will Smith
Starting point is 00:29:24 but I don't think that this is a good idea. Right. Yeah. Where do you stand on this? Well, look, it's his most morally ambiguous role since Hancock. Sure. A guy who was kind of sort of not into being a hero, but then he was way into being a hero. What about Seven Pounds where he had the car accident and he killed all these people, so he gave away all his organs and there was jellyfish?
Starting point is 00:29:45 No, it's not, no. What about the one where he lived in the toilet and he had to sell computers and he solved a Rubik's Cube and his son was in it? Oh, a toilet computer. Yes. Yeah, okay, yeah. Will Smith's toilet computer. Will Smith's toilet computer. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:29:58 You know what? I think it was in a movie in the early 90s where he was like a con man pretending to be Sidney Poitier's son or something. Is that a dream you had? It could have been. Right. Do you want to hear about other dreams that I've had? No, please don't. Isn't that the worst?
Starting point is 00:30:12 People tell you dreams. Yeah, it really is. I don't want to get into that. So what do you think? Yeah, Will Smith though. I'm interested to see what he does with it. Yeah. I mean, Deadshot wears a mask.
Starting point is 00:30:22 Yeah. And he's sort of... He won't though. I bet he'll just have the eye thing. I bet sometimes he'll wear it. Oh, yeah, yeah. I don't know. That's a good question, actually.
Starting point is 00:30:31 Because some stars will make a concession to that. Like, not big stars, necessarily, but if the character is always masked, they'll be like, look, I want to do this for the fans. I'm not going to... Yeah, yeah. But, I mean, like, Carl Urban did it for Dread, but that's not a particularly big property and he's not a huge star. No, he's not.
Starting point is 00:30:48 He's a good actor. He's not a superstar lunatic. Yeah, he's precisely, yeah. As far as we can tell. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. Well, like, Hugo Weaving did it for... Vendetta, exactly, yeah.
Starting point is 00:30:57 And whatevs. Yeah. Antonio Banderas did it for Mask of Zorro. I think if we continually tweet Will Smith that Hugo Weaving done it, then... Just like bait him, just be like, you're not even at Weaving's level. Yeah, exactly. Even Weaving did it. Yeah. Hashtag even Weaving. But look, obviously you can see Deadshot without the mask as well, because he doesn't always wear it. Right, sure. And sometimes he's just got like the eye patchy thing. So, however they do it, whatever.
Starting point is 00:31:25 Tom Hardy as Rick Flagg. Yep, okay. Is Rick Flagg a good guy? Uh, sort. Like, he's the least bad guy, isn't he? Um. Because he's not an incredibly well-known character. Yep, uh-huh.
Starting point is 00:31:39 But he's generally the leader, right? That's my understanding. Yeah, like, he's the sort of the... Well, there's been more than one Rick Flagg. Yeah. I'm assuming it... Well, he's been more than one Rick Flagg. Yeah. I'm assuming it... Well, he's sort of a guy, I think... And it's been a long time since I've thought about Rick Flagg at all.
Starting point is 00:31:51 But I think he's a guy who ended up in the Suicide Squad in, like, unfortunate circumstances kind of thing. Yeah. Yeah, hang on. Let me just... Hang on. Oh, okay, right, right, right. Okay.
Starting point is 00:32:01 Like, he's the guy who's not in there because he's, like, on Super Criminal Death Row. Yeah, yeah. He's just, like, the leader of the team. Okay, cool. So he's the handler. Yeah, yeah. But he hasn't been in any other version of the Suicide Squad, I don't think. Okay.
Starting point is 00:32:14 Like, he wasn't in the cartoon version, I don't think. Yeah. He's not in the Arrow version. No, no. Or, yeah, are you talking about that recent movie thing? That version. Yeah, but also there's a sort of a, in the Justice League Unlimited universe, it's called Task Force X. Yeah, but also there's a sort of in the Justice League Unlimited universe
Starting point is 00:32:26 it's called Task Force X. Yeah, yeah. He's not in that either I don't think. There you go. Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. Yep, as predicted.
Starting point is 00:32:36 Great. I like that. People don't necessarily like this but I think it's okay. Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang. Are people objecting
Starting point is 00:32:44 to Jai Courtney or Captain Boomerang? Well, more the Jai Courtney thing. Look, I know Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang. Are people objecting to Jai Courtney or Captain Boomerang? Well, more the Jai Courtney thing. Look, I know Jai Courtney hasn't had the... Like, people are saying, he's the next bloody Sam Worthington, whatever, whatever. Which, you know, could be true. Yeah. But he's in Spartacus, and he's quite good in Spartacus.
Starting point is 00:32:58 He does look very Tom Hardy. Yeah. We've got two Tom Hardy-looking dudes. Two Tom Hardy-looking dudes. Yeah. I think they might have to give him some sort of Errol Flynn, like beard mustache situation for some reason. Definitely.
Starting point is 00:33:09 Captain Boomerang doesn't have that, but I think they'll put that on. Definitely. And he's got, do you think they'll give him the little, the little weird Air Force cap? Yes. I think they'll give him that. Well, the new, the new one looks quite different. He's more kind of sleek and whatever. And he just turned up in Arrow actually.
Starting point is 00:33:23 He did. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. But yeah, I think that's okay. And he's Australian. So no and whatever and he just turned up in Arrow actually he did yeah yeah yeah but yeah I think that's okay and he's Australian so you know that works
Starting point is 00:33:28 whatever but I think yeah his choice of movies may not be great but I think give him a chance I think he could do something good
Starting point is 00:33:35 but also there's a lot of big names here that you've got to kind of compete with and so we'll see how that goes you think he's going to get thrown in the background
Starting point is 00:33:43 yeah I think there'll be a sweet boomerang sequence that'll bring it up to the top. I think also they'll kill one of them and it might be him. I reckon it'll be Enchantress. Oh yeah, Enchantress.
Starting point is 00:33:52 Yeah, Cara Delvegine. Yeah, dead. Never heard of her, she's dead. So yeah, that's okay, right? Sure. Yep. We still don't know what kind of universe... You know what's weird is we don't know what kind of universe that... You know what's weird is we don't know
Starting point is 00:34:05 what kind of universe the DC universe is yet. No. Like the movie universe. Like with Marvel you know that there's aliens and there's gods and there's super technology
Starting point is 00:34:12 and there's super serums or whatever. Yeah. We don't know what DC... It's been... This has been going forever. This thing's been going forever. We don't know what it is yet.
Starting point is 00:34:20 Like there's... Superman's an alien. That's all we got. Batman's pretty good but we don't... We never know what Batman's like yet. No, we don't. what it is yet like there's superman's an alien that's all we got batman's pretty good but we don't we never know what batman's like yet no we don't like is he the batman with the ufo in the cave yeah exactly when the dinosaur yeah and the giant coin does he have all them stuff does he yeah we don't know right in if you know enchantress do we know if she's is she actually magic is she actually magic we don't know yeah good right. Write in, creators of this film.
Starting point is 00:34:47 Tell us what the fuck is going on. Tell us all the secrets. And we'll take them, we'll hold on to them forever. We will, forever. And then we can finally have an exclusive. Yeah, that'd be nice, wouldn't it? Or send us some prop boomerangs. Please.
Starting point is 00:35:00 That's all I want. They're not coming back though, am I right? Mm-hmm. I know it's yours, but... No, that's fine. That's fine. Look, I think what we should do anytime either of us has a real sweet call,
Starting point is 00:35:14 in our opinion, we put that out. That won't get old to anyone. No. Not for me, certainly. All right. So, also, of course, Jared Leto. Oh, sorry.
Starting point is 00:35:24 Jared Leto. Jared Leto leto yeah gerard leto yeah as the joker yeah okay i think he's a good choice i like that a lot yeah is he gonna be in the suicide squad pro i don't think so yeah if he is i think he'd double cross or something totally or he'd just flip out and he's got his own agenda or whatever yeah totally yeah because you can't we've said this before you can't make the joker do anything okay so that if the joke is not in the suicide squad that doesn't leave a lot of characters no to kill no well we got dead shot tom hardy i know dead shot rick flag harley quinn jai courtney captain boomerang enchant that's six i reckon there'll be a couple more.
Starting point is 00:36:05 I reckon we might see a couple of backup characters who are killed immediately. Yeah, well, that's what happens in the cartoon, isn't it? Yeah, we lose KGB straight away. Exactly. Bomb in the head. Bang. Yeah, so that's pretty cool. Maybe they're going up against the Joker. Maybe that's interesting.
Starting point is 00:36:18 People are saying as well, will a Joker work in a movie without Batman? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I'm amazed that so many Batman movies have worked without the Joker. If anything. Come on.
Starting point is 00:36:31 Yeah. I think the strength of this is as well, DC have always put a big focus on their villains. Yep. If you notice that. Especially in the Batman movies. Yes. They're always about the villains. Yes.
Starting point is 00:36:42 In every Batman movie. And why not play to that strength and make something like this i think it's a really smart move and especially because people love a ragtag team i love by the way this has killed sinister six i reckon really i definitely how do you how do you get a cast better than this in a spider-man universe that nobody cares about that's very true actually yeah i mean they've got Jamie Foxx, but who else? Yeah, exactly. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:37:07 And he's not interesting in that film. They've got Jamie Foxx and they've got Dane DeHaan. And nothing against that guy. And they've got, what's his face as the runner? Paul Giamatti. Oh, yeah. But even then... But he's not on a super villain team.
Starting point is 00:37:20 No, and I love Paul Giamatti. I like all those guys, but it's not in the same league. No, not at all. Yeah. So, there was all Paul Giamatti. I like all those guys, but it's not in the same league. No, not at all. So there was all that Sony stuff leaked, all the movies and stuff, and there was some memos leaked. And one just says, Sinister Six ain't going to be good. Sorry. Let's put it out anyway.
Starting point is 00:37:40 If it's real, it's things like, why are we spending all our money on Adam Sandler movies that panned to the lowest common denominator? I'm parap paraphrasing it this is off the top of my head people are making new franchises like hunger games and whatever and new properties and we keep rehashing spider-man movies that don't make us any money it's just a whole lot of stuff like that so that they're probably aware that that sounds like see if that's real yeah that to me sounds like wishful thinking on behalf of fans yeah like or just movie fans
Starting point is 00:38:07 who are sick of seeing Spider-Man reboots and whatever yeah that does you know you know when you know
Starting point is 00:38:15 every once in a while there's a there's a a story is leaked about oh Marvel are gonna buy back Spider-Man from some
Starting point is 00:38:23 whatever you know that's just wishful thinking more April Fool's joke this sounds like that like okay fair enough but a lot of movies did get leaked
Starting point is 00:38:30 yeah yeah I think they leaked Annie oh great and there's some other stuff I can't remember is that a gritty reboot big time great
Starting point is 00:38:36 yeah Jamie Foxx is in it so nice Daddy Warbucks that's it so yeah also Oprah may be playing Amanda Waller. Waller, okay, yeah.
Starting point is 00:38:46 I think that's great. She's good at yelling, certainly. Isn't she? Yeah. Oprah's actually pretty good. Actor, female actor. I've never seen her in anything, but she's been in some stuff. She's in the Oprah Winfrey show.
Starting point is 00:38:56 Have you seen that? I've not seen that. Really? No, I've never. She's in that Tom Cruise interview. Oh, yeah, yeah. Where he attacks her with lightning bolts. Yeah, I've seen that, yeah.
Starting point is 00:39:06 Look that up. Tom Cruise, lightning bolts, bolts yeah I've seen that look that up Tom Cruise lightning bolts Oprah I've seen her release bees onto her audience look all I've seen is a series of animated gifs that have been doctored
Starting point is 00:39:12 with photoshop so I don't know what she's like but she's been in well regarded stuff she has yeah I can't think of anything but nothing kind of
Starting point is 00:39:20 nothing like this just kind of like you kind of how to make an American quilt kind of film yeah exactly yeah but this is the way the world's gone it's all comic book properties now do you think Nothing like this. Just kind of like, you're kind of how to make an American quilt. Yeah, exactly. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:39:27 But this is the way the world's gone. It's all comic book properties now. Do you think Oprah's going to take people out of this film? Oh yeah, that'd be great. Like explode heads. No, I meant the audience. Oh, you know what? Possible.
Starting point is 00:39:40 Yeah. Like people are going to be like, oh, it's Oprah. But at the same time, I think you get Oprah, I think you open up a whole new demographic there for people coming to see this sure middle aged women
Starting point is 00:39:48 yeah exactly bringing their children to the suicide squad but yes but it's smart like it's you know people say family friendly
Starting point is 00:39:56 Will Smith you've got you know you've got the return of the Joker you've got bloody Oprah Winfrey yep this is
Starting point is 00:40:02 nearly bulletproof you've got a man you've got a man decapitating people with boomerangs. Yep. Good. I just think this is pretty, I mean, it still might be terrible. You've got incredible draw card Rick Flay. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:40:13 I just, oh yeah, Tom Hardy's second DC role as well. That's interesting. Yeah. So I don't know. I'm not saying it's going to be, it's bulletproof as you can get it. Yeah, I guess so. I'm just saying, you know, at this point. So there you go.
Starting point is 00:40:24 And the director of Fury. I'm going to say something controversial about Will Smith though. Are you okay with this? I guess so, yeah. He's got dumb kids. Yes, he does. Dumb wiener kids. I think out of the two Men in Black films, I think the rap from the second movie is better than the first. Black
Starting point is 00:40:39 suits coming. Yes. Is better than Men in Black. Yes. Wow. Do you disagree? Look, I can't because I can't really remember how either of them go but go everybody listen to both okay sure and i think it's only people remember the first one more finally because it was the first one but the second one is better okay sure that's what i think all right you've said something very controversial hope to make that into one of your little videos and then we'll get the hits. Definitely not.
Starting point is 00:41:08 Okay, I got a letter here from Joel. Hey guys, and sometimes a dog. Dog's not here. Dog's not here. I saw the Suicide Squad announcement and my reaction was, eh, I don't care. That's what it's been for all the announcements made by Marvel and DC lately.
Starting point is 00:41:22 However, you guys stayed excited through all these announcements. Maybe I've turned into grumpy old Gramps Harrison Ford. I don't know. How do we stay so excited? Is it the drugs? It is the drugs.
Starting point is 00:41:31 I was just going to say the drugs, actually. I don't know. I think it's... And the sweet release of endorphins whenever my zinger theme tune is played. Sure. Whenever I do a zinger now, I'm like, oh, I can't wait
Starting point is 00:41:41 because I'm going to hear what that thing is. I think it's a good time for comic book movies um in general and uh you know this is probably this is we i mean this will go down we're talking about this won't last forever right the bubble's gonna burst bubble will burst eventually and maybe this will be the movie to do it sure but i don't know i think it's it's there's never been a time like this when they've putting so much effort and money and casting and throwing good directors
Starting point is 00:42:07 and everything into this and there probably won't be for a very long time after this bubble bursts. So just revel in it, man. Yeah, yeah. Soak it in. Sure. You're getting Captain Boomerang.
Starting point is 00:42:17 Roll around in it. It's interesting that they they're rehashing the characters in the TV series. Yes. Like we're getting... Sea Rise. Yeah, we're getting another Captain Boomerang.
Starting point is 00:42:28 We're getting another Deadshot. Yeah. That's weird, right? Yeah, it is. Are they test running... I feel like they might be. Are they test running the movie characters with the TV characters or something? You know what?
Starting point is 00:42:37 They might be. Yeah. Yeah. I feel like this is why DC isn't as successful in this arena. Yeah. Because they're... They're not as bold. And they're not putting these universes together.
Starting point is 00:42:47 Yeah. Well. Oh, well. What do I know? Yeah, exactly, Mason. Oh. Oh, is there a sad audio sting? No.
Starting point is 00:42:56 When I get something wrong? Guy who sent that in, delightful, thank you. Could you send a sad version of that? When I get something wrong. Whenever I'm proven wrong, if I've made a claim and it turns out I'm wrong, just... Also, this is from Joel Steele.
Starting point is 00:43:14 If you guys want to hear celebrity stories, I rode on a Ferris wheel with Mel Gibson a while ago. Official dick butt of the podcast. There you go. I want to know how that happened. Yeah, and were you... At gunpoint. Yep, certainly. Did he have you have you hang on which one's the ferris wheel that's the one that goes yes it's a big i was thinking of america around it's a same shut up look i'm not good with words
Starting point is 00:43:35 no okay so ferris it's actually the same thing no merry-go-round is okay fair point you're right how dare you ferris wheel is the standy upuppy merry-go-round. Yeah, the standy-uppy one, right. Like our famous Melbourne Star, the one that melted after two days. And then fused to a complete halt. And they're like, we've built the fourth biggest Ferris wheel in the world. Who cares? Yeah, and then there was a heat wave and it was destroyed. And it rolled into the ocean.
Starting point is 00:43:59 So anyway, you're on a Ferris wheel with Mel Gibson. Were you in the same carriage as Mel Gibson? That is the question. Yes. He was. I don't know. That's what I'm asking. Yes, Mel Gibson? That is the question. Yes. He was. I don't know. That's what I'm asking. Yes, tell us.
Starting point is 00:44:07 That would be nice. Tell us, Joel. Alright. Did he wait until the top before he started anti-Semitic ranting? Or did he start immediately? Like, they closed
Starting point is 00:44:16 the little gate on the side and he's like, I'll tell you one thing and you're like, oh no, Mel Gibson. There's going to be a lot of revolutions on this. Oh no.
Starting point is 00:44:26 Lord of the Rings trilogy, though, Mason. Oh, yes. Let's talk about that. Okay. Because we said we would. Oh, yeah. We're already nearly 45 minutes in. My God.
Starting point is 00:44:36 Is that good or bad? Well, that's all news. I think that's the longest we've ever newsed. Love news, though. Yeah. Good week for news. Great week for news. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:44:43 This podcast could just be just news some weeks we could do a news and mailbag week alright let's just wrap it up here then okay guys no I meant for the extent of look it doesn't matter yeah you're right we should
Starting point is 00:44:53 a lot of the things we really do though because of the hobbits coming out I could just do an episode where I describe the snapchats people are sending me any dicks? no let's keep it that way
Starting point is 00:45:02 fantastic yeah okay so oh um our listener from ballarat yes uh hang on where are we josh harper do you know him no okay never mind shout out to josh harper thanks for snapchatting from ballarat snapchat from ballarat oh that's pretty good yeah okay fx is the veil explores the surprising and fraught relationship between two women who play a deadly game of truth and lies
Starting point is 00:45:30 on the road from Istanbul to Paris and London. One woman has a secret, the other a mission to reveal it before thousands of lives are lost. FX's The Veil, starring Elizabeth Moss, is now streaming on Disney+. So, The Hobbit's coming out. Obviously not as good movies, even though you haven't seen them. I haven't seen them. Take any word for it.
Starting point is 00:45:53 Maybe you're wrong, though. No, I'm not. We will do a Hobbit episode. I want to see them all. And then we'll do a Hobbit thing. Okay. Even if it's just a once-off kind of thing that's just about The Hobbit. Because you have to go and see them. I sure do's gonna be i look forward to that but look the lord of
Starting point is 00:46:11 the rings i'm gonna live tweet you as i watch the hobbit it's gonna be great for you so when they came out what were they 2001 2002 2003 shot back to back peter jackson revolutionized filmmaking made everybody think that you could shoot things back-to-back and it would work. Heads up, most of the time it doesn't work. Give me some examples of when it doesn't work. Pirates. Oh, yep, didn't work.
Starting point is 00:46:32 I think they shot Back to the Future 2 and 3 back-to-back, so that's good. Yeah. Let's find some other examples. The Avatar movies, that'll be an example of that. Okay. When those come out. All right.
Starting point is 00:46:44 I'm ready to play you sad, the sad trumpet sting when you're proven wrong there's the um these are the movies though at the time there weren't a lot of good comic book movies kind of coming out there was your spider-man and there was your x-men and that was pretty much it and i guess daredevil came out around then but those were like these were like the movies i look forward to the that i used to look forward to the most oh yeah every year? Because there was nothing else like it. And they just felt so like kind of big and epic and kind of, they were just like this remarkable achievement in filmmaking where all the. You're making big gestures.
Starting point is 00:47:14 I'm making such big gestures. And it was just, and you know, the way that like the characters played off each other and the world that they built and there was a definitive end. So you knew that it was going to, it's going to like, and it was like an event. But nowadays there's no guarantee there's ever going to be an end to
Starting point is 00:47:31 Tolkien movies. No. Again, they're probably going to split the last one up into three more movies. Exactly. So. Somebody, I read it.
Starting point is 00:47:42 I was going to say an article, but I don't think I read the article, but I read a tweet that apparently it takes less time to read The Hobbit than it does to watch all the movies yep I believe that fantastic what did you think of that at the time? you know I did really enjoy it
Starting point is 00:47:55 I think about half way through The Two Towers I ran out of steam for those movies I think the high point in The Two Towers is when, you can probably guess, it's when Gandalf fights the Balrog. Yeah, that is sweet.
Starting point is 00:48:10 I spoil us all this. Yeah. You haven't seen. Fab, fab, fab, fab, fab, fab. Also, I've, again, my Lord of the Rings history is every couple of years I attempt to read Lord of the Rings. I'm like, I'll give it a go.
Starting point is 00:48:25 And I go and I buy another copy of it. Because I don't know why. I laugh because it's very difficult and not very good. Correct. Okay. Email in people who are going to hate this opinion. But I've never met anyone who has enjoyed it the first go around. Okay.
Starting point is 00:48:41 Yeah. I've met a lot of people that kind of like broke through right like oh you get to a certain point and then you kind of get it and it clicks in your brain right and it kind of flows so yeah every every couple years i attempt to read yeah me too but i have no once i did it once oh my god i actually got halfway through yeah i've talked about this before the first one and then there was another they went to visit the elves and they're like let's have a party and then they had a party they went to visit the elves and they're like, let's have a party. And then they had a party
Starting point is 00:49:06 and they described all the food and the party and the music and the fun and this guy's the son of this guy and whatever. And then they're like, get on your boat, see you later.
Starting point is 00:49:13 And as they're leaving, they're like, come back for another party. And I'm like, no, shut it. Done. So you'd never know
Starting point is 00:49:19 if they came back for another party. No. Wow. So yeah, so that was, that was it for me. And that was about time, the time when the movies came out. And you were like, better off. And I know, yeah. So that was it for me. And that was about the time when the movies came out.
Starting point is 00:49:26 And you were like, better watch it. Yeah. Put stuff on nerds. Throw it on the pile. And I know purists say that the movies aren't a patch on the books. But as a... I get the sense they're different animals. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:49:40 They are, yeah. The books are more about building a society. Yeah. A boring society. A boring are more about building a society. Yeah, a boring society. A boring society and building languages. Yeah. Because that's what Tolkien was all about. He was a linguist.
Starting point is 00:49:50 He was a linguist, exactly, yeah. So it was more about that. The drive of the narrative was not as important. No. Hence the multiple parties and all the singing. Yes. And rhyme and riddle. Oh, jeez.
Starting point is 00:50:03 Whatever. But, yeah. But, but yeah so go ahead i would like i think that peter jackson did such a great job of taking what's great about those books like the most action-packed parts and the kind of the core of the characters i think and he switched a lot of stuff around and dumped that tom bombardill yeah got his buddy out and just and it kind of compressed it and this is why the hobbit falls down, because it wasn't compressing, it was... Expanding. Expanding.
Starting point is 00:50:27 Yeah. And just, you know, jammed in the best stuff. What's Tom Bombadil's deal? Why could they extract him so completely? Because he doesn't really... Does he just show up at the parties? Yeah, well... Does he just lead the singing?
Starting point is 00:50:39 Is that his deal? Yeah. He helps them a lot at the start, like when they first kind of start out their journey. Right. But they give a lot of his lines, I think, to Treebeard and a bunch of other characters. And I don't think he's super integral.
Starting point is 00:50:53 Like, he's a very... Clearly not. Yeah. I mean, especially because they give some of the stuff that he does to other people. Right, uh-huh. I mean, I think maybe he turns up more later, but I don't think he's a big player further on.
Starting point is 00:51:05 Right. I think he's mostly in it at the start. Yeah. I might be wrong on that. But I had like, I didn't have it, my brother has all the extended editions and I watched all of those. Sure.
Starting point is 00:51:15 And I really like them. And I think if you're going to watch them, that's the way to watch them. Yeah. Especially if you've never seen them before. Or even if you have. Would you say watch them all in the one go? Definitely not.
Starting point is 00:51:23 Okay. I've tried to do that once it's it's impossible yeah uh and even like i think i've watched like all the special features and i never do this as well and all the commentary tracks uh and all of that oh that's right so the what how you started with this was do i did i look forward to all the um i did i'm wondering if you go back and watch Fellowship of the Ring, how much of that world is still amazing to you? When was the last time you watched it? Well, it's funny you should say that.
Starting point is 00:51:53 Oh, is it? Last year, I might have been here before, there was a symphony and Lord of the Rings thing that came to Melbourne. There was a live symphony orchestra and it was Fellowship of the Ring playing and it was at the Melbourne Arts. Party, whatever. Sure. Fuck art.
Starting point is 00:52:08 I've said that before. But so I went along and I left an intermission because like I've seen this. Really? You left an intermission? I left an intermission. Did you get free tickets? Yeah, it was free. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:52:18 I didn't tell the person I got it from that I left, but I did. And it was not because I hated it. Uh-huh. I just was like, I've seen this. I get it. If I'm going to watch this, I'd rather watch it at home where I can get up and get a drink and shower in between because it goes for so long and whatever. So yeah.
Starting point is 00:52:34 And I really liked that movie. Change of clothes for the changing of the seasons. That's right. So yeah, that's an answer to your question. That part. Yeah. How much do you think the live symphony added to the film i think it actually took away from it interesting because it a lot of the time that
Starting point is 00:52:52 was louder than the actual right okay thing and i think it's a good idea in theory uh-huh but that score isn't it well i don't know anything about music it's not incredibly complex so it's a lot of the same stuff kind of right you know over and over again and I don't really think it added that much to it would you have watched it if it was just a melodica version
Starting point is 00:53:10 over the top yes just one guy it's still the Melbourne Arts Centre and everybody's in like you know nice clothes and tuxedos
Starting point is 00:53:19 or whatever and it's just one guy in a melodic with a melodica and he's like he's just playing the Jurassic Park theme over and over again. Definitely.
Starting point is 00:53:29 Absolutely. Yes. But I think they do hold up because so much of it was done in camera, a lot of the special effects. Your golem and whatever and a lot of your backdrops. But so much of that stuff is miniatures
Starting point is 00:53:41 and costumes and like orcs because they don't they do cgi orcs now they don't do a lot of the practical stuff right and that's very noticeable is that because they have less money no i think because they have more money oh and i think there's but i know i'll talk about this in a bit there's there's a difficulty to organizing that many or costumes and makeup and everything and sure you know which you don't need to do if it's CGI. Well, what they should have done is they should have gotten the production designers for Doctor Who to get in there.
Starting point is 00:54:10 Because they're pretty good at getting, like, two Cybermen costumes and making it look like 100 by just changing the camera angle a lot. You know? Sure. Yeah, yeah. But, like, Lord of the Rings is a perfect example of blending CGI and live action in the best possible way.
Starting point is 00:54:26 And so much of that world is fleshed out, even to the extent, you know, King Theoden, he's the king of the horse dudes. Uh-huh, sure. I remember I saw on the special features, they put a little engraving on the inside of his chest plate, his armor, which nobody sees. Right. But it's some engraving that's, I can't remember what it is, that's particular to that society or whatever. Right, right. And even that, like the actor said, that really helps you get into it because you know that there's that level of detail.
Starting point is 00:54:51 There's even things like chain mail. They handmade all that chain mail. Like there was two dudes just doing it for like a year, just making chain mail. So it's things like that. And you notice. These movies are a labor of love. Yeah, exactly.
Starting point is 00:55:06 Do you think the Hobbit movies are as much a labor of love? Definitely not. Okay. Definitely not. And just the fact that you can see in all of these movies, they're gritty, like, looks-wise. Like, everyone looks like they're kind of sweating, and it's hot, and they're tired, and they're wet, and it's hot, or whatever. And you see all that. But you don't really see that in the whole, but it's all kind of very shiny and whatever.
Starting point is 00:55:31 Yeah. That's why it works. Now, if we're talking like in the Lord of the Rings films, especially the first one, when you see like the big backdrops and the what have you. Like a lot of that is New Zealand. Yes. But there's some CGI over the top of that. and the what have you like a lot of that like a lot of that is New Zealand yes but there's some CGI over the top of that
Starting point is 00:55:46 there is and sometimes like a matte painting how does that hold up still good still good but I think yeah I think CGI
Starting point is 00:55:52 is at its best when they do kind of stuff like that yeah I would say that definitely okay definitely holds up so you still get
Starting point is 00:55:59 when you watch it like with the symphony orchestra or whatever you still get that same feeling of like this is a big this is a big world but the room that I watched in as well it wasn't it's not built as a cinema
Starting point is 00:56:08 it's built as a kind of an auditorium yeah so it's not like watching and it was lighter as well right okay you know you gotta see the symphony gotta see him man yeah so yeah again nothing against that but whatever also like an example like this this is from listener uh 62442 listener from the first she's got a bunch of other stuff oh sure she's written before but that's her name yes the shire uh for example was for this movie was actually constructed a year before they filming started they wanted to look more natural and overgrown so they set it up and let it overgrow only uh landscaping when needed when filming started so it's things like that yeah and they actually got rid of hobbiton at the end there and moved it.
Starting point is 00:56:47 They put it back in for the Hobbit and now it's there permanently, which is great because it's a good touristy thing. Oh, sure. Like I've been in New Zealand and I didn't do Hobbiton, but I went through some of the locations where the last Lord of the Rings, the first Lord of the Rings battle at the end where they're in the forest and you know, all the Uruk-hai are running through. The one where Sean Bean is killed. Yeah, Sean Bean is being is killed and it's all like it just looks exactly the same
Starting point is 00:57:09 it's all real but you notice it's real but in the hobbit most of the forests and whatever it's clearly not and you notice you notice that stuff you know what i mean yeah it just yeah make it's it's a big difference and i think a lot of it's to do with Peter Jackson getting older and the fact that he didn't really want to do The Hobbit. Right. And because Guimero del Toro stepped out and somebody needed to do it and they probably threw a bunch of money at him. Yeah, sure. And he'd want to do it because who else do you give it to?
Starting point is 00:57:37 Who do you trust with it? Well, I think, and also the first ones nearly killed him. Yeah, exactly. They did, yeah. He lost a lot of weight. I mean, yeah. Yeah. But again, a labor of love and it shows in killed him. Yeah, exactly. They did, yeah. They lost a lot of weight. I mean, you know. Yeah. But again, a labor of love, and it shows in the...
Starting point is 00:57:48 Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Anyway. Do you want to talk about the movies individually? Just whatever, real quickly? I guess so. I don't... Sure.
Starting point is 00:57:55 Sure. I'm not, you know, I'm not against it. I just didn't re-watch these, I'll be honest. No, neither did I. I've been catching up on... Yeah. I've been catching up on The Flash. Sure. Yeah, yeah. But the. No, neither did I. I've been catching up on the Flash. Sure.
Starting point is 00:58:06 But the first one, 2001, did it blow your mind? Or were you like, whatever? What's the big set piece in that? Probably the battle at the end. There's some big statues. I don't think... A lot of it's Rivendell. I wasn't blown away by that first one.
Starting point is 00:58:20 Okay. That's probably why I prefer... Yeah, I think I just prefer like the big the big action set pieces oh really and that first that first battle is the final battle in the first one yeah it's fine but i want to see if i if i'm seeing watching an epic fantasy thing i want i want somebody fighting a fire demon but i yeah see that what about that part fire demon that's in the first one is it that's in the second one yeah, oh, sorry, it chases them through the mines of Moria. Oh, yes.
Starting point is 00:58:48 And that's pretty sweet. Yeah, okay. But I didn't really know, because I'd only read half the book or whatever. So a lot of this I didn't know. I didn't know that Gandalf died. And when he died, I thought he was dead forever. Oh, sure. Because that's how it normally works in an arc.
Starting point is 00:59:00 Yeah, exactly. Until they spoiled it in the trailer for the next movie. So that was like, there was like really effective moments like that. And then when Boromir dies at the end, like that's, you know, that's a, they're good moments. Sure. Yeah. But no, I didn't really expect that much going into it and it just completely like blew my mind.
Starting point is 00:59:18 Right, right, right. Yeah. And I wish that the Hobbit movies were better, but at the same time, I don't really care. Is there any sweet CGI set pieces with fighting giant monsters? In the new one? Yes. Yeah, there's like a big dragon. And the dragon's great.
Starting point is 00:59:31 Oh, yes. But, you know, whatever. What happened to all the dragons between the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings? I think he was one of the last, maybe. Oh, okay, right. There's the Nazgul. They're dragon-ish. Nah.
Starting point is 00:59:42 They're more kind of snake-looking birds. But, I don't know, I still think that movie has the best action sequences. I think when they get bigger, I think by the time you roll around to the third Lord of the Rings movie... There's trees walking about. I think that's the second one. There's big elephants. Big elephants, yeah.
Starting point is 00:59:59 That's the third one as well. I think that action sequence is too big and too CGI'd. Right. And I prefer that. There's that last fight in Lord of the Rings where Aragorn fights the bigger Rukai. And it's just like dudes. It just looks like two dudes just scrapping, like actually scrapping. And it's not super well choreographed. It's got this kind of improvisational thing.
Starting point is 01:00:23 There's a bit where the guy throws a knife and he deflects the knife with a sword and that wasn't supposed to happen they kept that in and the way that he just like takes his
Starting point is 01:00:31 head off at the end right wasn't supposed to happen Viggo Mortensen just cut a guy's head off killed a man you love a Viggo Mortensen one on one fight
Starting point is 01:00:38 I do you love an Easton Promises nude knife fight you love just him scrapping on the street and you see it on YouTube exactly
Starting point is 01:00:44 I love all that what's he been in lately besides the Hobbit films Delglo Dude, knife fight. You love just him scrapping on the street and you see it on YouTube. Exactly. I love all that. What's he been in lately besides the Hobbit films? Delglo. That was like 2004. I don't know. I think he did some movie recently. He was out here a couple of years ago for like, he was like a German officer.
Starting point is 01:01:00 I reckon unless you are terrible with money, doing the Lord of the Rings films has probably set you for a long time. For life. You're done. You're fine. But you know what though? The cast also is really good. Like, the fellowship itself is good. And even the stuff, like, they've got, like, an actual dwarf to play, like, Gimli, and
Starting point is 01:01:15 they've got John Rhys-Davies for the close-up stuff. Oh, interesting. So they do stuff like that, yeah. And it's the same with the Hobbits. They wear, like, little Frodo Baggins masks. You know what, though? You know who I don't think is well cast? I think Elijah Wood is miscast.
Starting point is 01:01:28 Really? Okay. Yeah. I think Martin Freeman, even though he's in worse movies, a Martin Freeman type guy is a better choice. Now, Martin Freeman is Bilbo in the Hobbit. He's Bilbo, yeah. Okay, cool.
Starting point is 01:01:38 Yeah. I just feel like I can see his kind of American-ness. Interesting. Yeah. Maybe that's just me. Okay. Are you just against Elijah Wood generally? No, he's in Back to the Future 2.
Starting point is 01:01:50 Yeah, he's good in that. I've no problem with Elijah Wood at all. Yeah. But I think you see it a little bit with Sean Astin. Viggo Mortensen. Yes. He's American-ish. Well, he's also from other places.
Starting point is 01:02:01 I don't know where he's from. But he's got an American accent, but you don't really... I just assume he's from a Russian prison prison at all times yeah and like worm tongue you know the worm tongue guy he's got like the most american accent you'll ever hear but he does like a dead-on kind of british so much so that the other cast members didn't know that he was american interesting i just think frodo's i don't think he's at that level i think he's a bit sappy right and a bit of a downer uh-huh and i think a lot of the frodo stuff on on its own doesn't work as well yeah than the the other stuff maybe that's what sort of why i'm against like i'm not
Starting point is 01:02:37 against the films but the reason i probably don't go back to them quite regularly is there is that kind of sappy downer like to him and and Sam, that kind of love story is kind of... The whole thing is a bit of a downer. Their interactions, it's all sad and negative. It's like, you know all the Disney films from back in the day? It was always like, there's always dead parents and blah-ba-dee-blah and sadness. Unrelenting sadness until the end.
Starting point is 01:03:00 Like the Spider-Man films, there's always unrelenting sadness until the end when it's kind of okay. Maybe Elijah Wood would have been a good Peter Parker not now no not now maybe
Starting point is 01:03:10 he's got the eyes for it he does don't even have to put the Spider-Man eyes on him no he does cutouts in the mask what do you think about him as
Starting point is 01:03:17 we're talking about Sin City do you think he's supposed to be Charlie Brown like a psychopathic Charlie Brown I didn't know that maybe sure he's got the jumper
Starting point is 01:03:25 that's all yeah he does good point yep yep definitely yeah good he doesn't even question me yeah he doesn't even talk in that though but yeah but that movie's great and it's again i don't really revisit it but it's free it's my favorite and it's it's a near that's probably a near perfect movie there you go yeah wow well we're not talking about near-perfect movies. We're talking about Lord of the Rings films. Two Towers, though. Yep. I was actually disappointed with that at the time.
Starting point is 01:03:51 Okay. Going back, I think it's better. Because of the Sam and Frodo stuff. And Gollum is amazing. Yep. But I feel like the fact they split the party. Uh-huh. Sure.
Starting point is 01:04:01 Right. So you've got... Oh, Orlando Bloom also is really good in these but and then just kind of lost something along the way right but and you got a lot of sam and frodo kind of sad he's in he's in the hobbit obviously who uh oh yeah he is oh he's only in the first one he might he's probably in the third one but obviously has he has he been euthyified slightly because i mean not really immortal not really does he look older in the prequels? Nah, I don't think so.
Starting point is 01:04:26 Okay, right. He just looks... Gollum, you're talking about. No, I'm talking about... What's his face? Legolas. Oh, no. Yeah, sorry. He looks older.
Starting point is 01:04:34 You can see it in his face. Huh. Like, he's got kind of a puffier kind of face. Right. You know, as you get older. Happens. Yeah, sure. But, like, his dad in that is younger than him in real life.
Starting point is 01:04:44 It's the it's the lee pace right sure and the accuser yeah uh yeah and he's also he's not supposed to be there you look at him and you're like what are you doing here like it doesn't it doesn't really work huh yeah because that dude's like 36 now maybe so it's a big you know it's he's not as kind of elven as he as he was but they do kind of euthyphize him he looks like he's not as kind of elven as he once was but they do kind of euthify him it looks like he's got a soft focus on him
Starting point is 01:05:07 oh sure yeah yeah the second one though yeah and the stuff with the tree right the big boring tree I know people like the tree
Starting point is 01:05:15 but I don't like that tree that tree's boring I love trees it's not true and also it suffers from being the middle of a trilogy sure
Starting point is 01:05:24 uh huh like Empire Strikes Back does haha proven you wrong Zinger And also, it suffers from being the middle of a trilogy. Sure, uh-huh. Like Empire Strikes Back does. Ha-ha, proven you wrong, zinger. Zinger sound effect. I got you, idiot. There we go. Prove you wrong. You did.
Starting point is 01:05:38 But the Helm's Deep stuff is amazing. Yep. The opening, like you said. I feel like this is just me telling you why Lord of the Rings is amazing. Yeah, I was not prepared for this at all. But it's good. Drops the bloody lightning bolt on it.
Starting point is 01:05:53 Sure, yeah, exactly. Jumps off a mountain. Yeah, it's bloody awesome, mate. It's really good. And then it's nice to see him come back. You know what I mean? Gandalf comes back and stuff. I guess that's okay.
Starting point is 01:06:02 That's pretty good. All the horse stuff is great. At the time, do you think, when the books came out, did people like, You know what I mean? Gandalf comes back and stuff. I guess that's okay. That's pretty good. All the horse stuff is great. At the time, do you think when the books came out, do you think people were like, why's Gandalf come back? Like, he definitely died. No, I think people accepted it.
Starting point is 01:06:14 Interesting. People were like, whatever. Sort of breaks the narrative, doesn't it? It does, yeah. Like, because... Well, no one else comes back. Well, if we associate it with like, you know, a kind of a pop-cultury comic book kind of universe. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:06:26 Or any kind of narrative, really. Sure. You can't have somebody really die and then come back. Doesn't work. Does Gennep really die? Yeah, he does. He's a spirit being. Yeah, he's not a man.
Starting point is 01:06:38 He looks like an old man, but he's not. He's fit and magic. Has it ever alluded to that he isn't human? Not really. He just dies as an old wizard and he's not like he's fit and is he ever it is it ever alluded to that he isn't human not really he just dies as an old wizard yeah he comes back he just says by the way i'm a spirit being yeah heads up yeah yeah surprise you know yeah from that point forward is he ever in any danger yeah there's a bit in the third one there's a bit that was cut out the extended bit where he fights a nazgul uh-huh and it kind of messes him up. Right. And they cut that out of the final one.
Starting point is 01:07:09 But yeah, with Christopher... In many ways, he's the Neo of this trilogy. He is. Right? He has the acting skills of Keanu Reeves. That's right. Yeah. Sure. Yeah, I guess...
Starting point is 01:07:17 Do you reckon it breaks the narrative a little bit? He's the only guy that comes back, though. I guess. But if one guy can come back... If there's magic enough in the world for one guy to come back, there's magic enough guy that comes back, though. I guess. But if one guy can come back. If there's magic enough in the world for one guy to come back, there's magic enough to bring everybody back. Like you said, though, Mason, spirit bang. Spirit bang, you're right.
Starting point is 01:07:32 Okay, I'm sorry. Does he be... He takes more of a background role, though? In the second one, he does. Yeah, yeah. Because he kind of goes off to find some help. I'll forgive you, incredibly popular story from... It's loved by millions i forgive you this time like and you know what the helms deep stuff is amazing and that's probably the best big
Starting point is 01:07:51 battle sequence in all these movies because a lot of that was helms deep they made as a miniature oh yes and they you know and they use this pro and they did they did a lot of night shoots in the rain and the wet and that went for months and months. And the Uruk-hai costumes, they'd put them on every night and they'd be still wet from the night before and then they'd do the best they could to dry them out. And then they'd put them back on. Hair ties. Yeah, so everyone's wearing these kind of damp, cold costumes.
Starting point is 01:08:19 Yeah, trench foot. Yeah, exactly. It'd be like actually fighting in World War I. Yeah. So, like, and you notice that, like, that battle is, like, muddy and not pleasant. I guess the difference between these movies and the Hobbit movies is maybe the lessons learned have made them worse films in that... Okay, sure, yeah. Okay, well, you know, maybe...
Starting point is 01:08:44 Because I guess when you do do that it's sort of done on the fly where they're like we build the costumes and put them out we'll film the thing oh they're wet well you know yeah we don't have the money to do it to drive you know to take a couple of days off we have to do it again yeah and i would imagine with the hobbits the print you know the producers or the the studio were like well that's an occupational health and safety yeah you nearly killed you nearly killed everybody. You nearly killed everybody. We're not doing that again. We're CGI-ing all the auctions point forward.
Starting point is 01:09:09 And so... We can just shoot it in the day in the studio. Yeah, yeah. And then add CGI rain or whatever we're going to do. And so, to fix those problems, worse film. Yeah, sure. That's a really good point. Don't risk...
Starting point is 01:09:21 From adversity comes something. Correct. Yes. What we're saying is, better films risk some people's lives. Yeah. That's what I'm saying. Look, I understand, though, why Peter Jackson would do it this way now. Why would you put yourself through that again?
Starting point is 01:09:32 No, you wouldn't exactly. You wouldn't. It's crazy. Yeah, yeah. But like you said, yeah. Do you think they should have got some other hot shot young director? Like us. Yeah, like us.
Starting point is 01:09:39 We could have done it. We'll put all kinds of people's lives in danger. Hey, I've got a good idea. With the Zork costume, we'll dry them out by setting you on fire. We'll have Legolas shoot some fire arrows at you. Just run around on fire. That'll dry you out. Yeah. Yeah. Return of the King, though, the last and longest. Oh, yes. This is where I feel like it tips over into Hobbit-ness. You know the same way that Return
Starting point is 01:10:02 of the Jedi, you get a touch of the crazy kind of George Lucas in it with the Ewoks and whatever. You know, it gets a bit kind of prequel-y, just a little bit. It's where they were like, look, it's where they tip over from, we need, this is a vehicle to sell action figures. Yeah, sure.
Starting point is 01:10:19 So we need some Ewoks, we need some whatever. Yeah, and I feel like the way that that action that that battle sequence at the end is mostly CGI. And it's great. It's still really good. It's very impressive. And a lot of it's still practical because they do a lot of the fighting in the real... Are you saying that Peter Jackson succumbed to madness in this film? No, I think by escalating it, which the books do escalate probably.
Starting point is 01:10:43 Right. Who knows? No one does. No one's ever finished him. Right. Who knows? No one does. No one's ever finished him. Surprise. No one's ever actually finished The Return of the King. I think it takes away
Starting point is 01:10:52 from the kind of smaller scale kind of story. Right, okay. Yeah. And the fact that it's got like 10 different endings that go forever. But that's not, like there are more endings in the book. Like there's a whole bit where,
Starting point is 01:11:04 because the army still exists and they invade the Shire and then they beat them back. And there's a whole bunch of other stuff that happens. The book ends, I think... There's a speeder chase through the forest. There's a speeder chase through the forest. They have to destroy that deflector shield generator, which is on the planet for some reason.
Starting point is 01:11:18 That's right. The book ends... They defeat Sauron two-thirds of the way through or something. And then it's mostly just wrap up. Oh, good. So that's pretty great. But there's some, look, it's still a really good movie. And like the spider bit, remember the spider?
Starting point is 01:11:32 Yep, uh-huh. I thought he actually killed Frodo for a second. I thought Sam's going to be the one to finish this. And Sam kind of does. That's where as well I like this character Sam the most because he steps up. Right, okay. In the last one. He's kind of, you know, and because the Goll betrayal comes through and then sam has to pick up the slack there's also a bit at
Starting point is 01:11:49 the end where aragon fights a troll at the gates of oh yes the thing and initially that was they just cgi'd over it they were just going to make him fight like a physical manifestation of sauron yeah and they ended up changing that to to a troll because he can't apparently do that without the ring. And when he gets the ring, he's invincible unless you can just get near him and cut his hand off or whatever. Hang on. So you can't defeat Sauron?
Starting point is 01:12:16 If he gets the ring, that's like he's unstoppable. Sauron is. Even though he has had it. And was defeated. And was defeated. Yeah. So make of that what you will. Yep.
Starting point is 01:12:26 And then the eagles show up. And that's pretty good. Yes. Nice. America. America. Coming through again. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:12:34 So, but you weren't on board at that point. No. Yeah. That's fair enough. I can understand that. I think they're good. The order that they come in are as good as they are. Right. And I think they're all they come in are as good as they are. Right.
Starting point is 01:12:45 And I think they're all great. And what an amazing achievement. The fact that he pulled off three pretty much tonally was the same, but it just flows. It's one big story. Yeah, okay. You're absolutely right there, yeah. No one has done it before and no one will do it, I'd say,
Starting point is 01:13:00 until James Cameron's Avatar sequels. Yeah, definitely. I think that actually that physical the physical manifestation of sauron from the first or the second what in the flashback yeah that that is that's very effective like yeah that that is a great yeah that is a great look for that he's just swiping guys aside yeah he's just this terrifying unstoppable monster yeah i thought that was very good yeah do we ever see Sauron as in a more human form? Or is that...
Starting point is 01:13:27 No. You know what? You do in The Hobbit a little bit. Okay, right. Yeah. He's just a cool dude. Yeah, he's just hanging out with Tom Bombadil. Nice.
Starting point is 01:13:35 Absolutely. That explains a lot. Doesn't it? Yeah. No, not as much. You kind of... You sort of see him... Because I would like to...
Starting point is 01:13:41 Weirdly, I would like to see the origin of that character. Okay, well... Like a Sauron untold. Getke evans in i know he was like he shows up in modern day earth just chilling just chilling at a cafe in france or whatever and he's got the he's he's 10 feet tall and he's got the black armor on and the giant sword the game begins yeah exactly yeah yeah i think he was an elvish kind of dude. Oh, yep. Because I know when Aragorn, in this deleted scene, because I've seen it,
Starting point is 01:14:10 when he first sees him, he sees him as this pure being of light and beauty or whatever, which he was before he was corrupted. So he was kind of like a... Is he the same race as Gandalf? No, I think... You know what? He might be, but I think he might even be elvish. I don't...
Starting point is 01:14:24 I'm throwing these questions at you. I don't know. and i know people know this and are screaming at me but i don't i don't know i'm not an expert on the law by any stretch but i've seen those movies i would really like to see maybe a youtube video that's an hour and whatever long yeah and it's just someone listening to our podcast and shouting at all the things we get wrong because there's got to be somebody who knows like that everybody knows more than us about out there yeah who is just they know everything that we've gotten wrong and they're just what just yelling i'll watch that i watch that too yeah put on band camp please so that's pretty great yeah yeah but they're great movies and i would highly recommend them if you haven't seen them. I mean, we have just spoiled them all completely.
Starting point is 01:15:07 Sure. But, yeah, I don't know. If you've gone in and out of this podcast, you had thought about watching The Lord of the Rings, and you may be doing your ironing or something, and you've just gone in and out, haven't really paid attention to all the things we just spoiled, and then you just listen to that recommendation there,
Starting point is 01:15:25 check them out. check them bloody out mate yeah but yeah they're just an amazing achievement and you know it's good that he won best film or whatever but I think he won
Starting point is 01:15:32 best film he won it for The Return of the King but I think he made it I think he won it for the wrong one I think they were kind of like you know what
Starting point is 01:15:39 you've done pretty good work yeah it's lifetime achievement yeah exactly it's trilogy achievement exactly yeah that's why the Wachowskis brothers won it for Matrix Revolution. That's why they won it again for Speed Racer.
Starting point is 01:15:50 That's why they're going to win it again for Jupiter Ascending. You got some knowledge up there. That was good stuff. Jupiter Ascending. Is that going to come out? I'll watch that. February. Doesn't bode well, does it?
Starting point is 01:16:01 Nope. All right. Well, I think, look, we'll probably come back to Lord of the Rings at some point. Great. We'll come back to The Hobbit, won't we? Uh-huh. And I'll talk about why, does it? Nope. All right. Well, I think, look, we'll probably come back to Lord of the Rings at some point. Great. We'll come back to The Hobbit, won't we? Uh-huh. And I'll talk about why I hate it. Fantastic.
Starting point is 01:16:09 I don't even hate it. But you know what the difference is as well? I've seen the Lord of the Rings movies multiple times. Not lately. Uh-huh. And I've watched the extended. I've seen both of those Hobbit movies once. And I have no inclination to go back.
Starting point is 01:16:22 Right. Okay. And there's extended versions for some reason and I will never go back to them just like our video game series never go back which we should do another one I've got some time next week
Starting point is 01:16:35 let's do it before Christmas or whatever or just after so anything else? that's me talking about Lord of the Rings while Mason listens pretty good I'm like one of you listeners, just listening away. Voicing all your concerns. Like, who was that guy?
Starting point is 01:16:51 Yes. Why is that guy grey and then he's white? What's happening there? What is happening there? Yeah. Well, he took on Sauron's, Saruman's role. That's confusing as well, isn't it? Why are they so similar in names?
Starting point is 01:17:03 Well, if we knew anything about linguistics, we'd probably know. It's probably a reason. I'm sure there is. Someone email in. Yeah. It's probably the same root word or something. I don't know. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:17:11 Do you like David Wenham's character in it? Yeah. That's my impression of David Wenham. He's no David Wenham's character in 300. Certainly isn't. Which word should it be? Actually, that's the same. The same.
Starting point is 01:17:25 The same character. And I mean, like, his Lord of the Rings character is pretty much the same. Yeah, I guess. But with better abs. Yeah, you're right. Anyway. This is from, before we get to what we read in. Oh, yes.
Starting point is 01:17:34 I've got something leading up to that. I'm ready. This is from Brandon. Oh, yes. Do you remember Brandon? I remember Brandon. Hello, Brandon. Thank you for listening, Brandon. So last week you remember his uh his kids started
Starting point is 01:17:48 seeing the red hot comic book movie news theme yep and he thought it was hilarious and his kids thought it was hilarious his wife did not think it was hilarious my goodness we're sorry mrs brandon for doing that to your kids madame brandon uh when listening to your show in the car with my son recurring theme we came up like we came upon the bit where you read my letter about him and his brother singing the opening theme my son freaked out and now thinks i'm famous i've tried to explain that i'm not and he refuses to believe me i pointed out that i'm sure a ton of people emailed you and that anyone could if they were so inclined and i just happened to get picked he immediately perked up and asked if he could
Starting point is 01:18:24 send you a video of him singing the jingle for What We Reading. His mother has forbidden him to sing the other one. Right, fair enough. In the hopes that you could play it and he could be famous too. Please see attached. Do you want to hear it? Yes.
Starting point is 01:18:37 Yeah! Yeah! Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba- What we're eating today. My name's Ethan. Say bye. Bye. Love it. Thanks, Ethan. Great stuff.
Starting point is 01:18:53 Thank you, Brandon. Ethan, your daddy's famous. He's famous in Australia. There's billboards. He has his own fragrance. Yes. Pretty good. It's called Brandon for men.
Starting point is 01:19:04 Oh, de Brandon. With all that said, I'd love to have him named the official fame monger of the podcast. Absolutely. Done. Yep. Regards, official best dad in the world, Brandon, aka Brandon. P.S. He started calling me Brandon in place of dad and daddy.
Starting point is 01:19:20 Well done. Oh, we have ruined this family. P.P.S. What's the right email to use? What was this one? WeeklyPlanetPod Gmail. That's the one. That's the best, we have ruined this family. PPS. What's the right email to use? What was this one? Wikimplanetpod Gmail. That's the one. That's the best one.
Starting point is 01:19:29 Thank you, guys. Pretty great. Love all of that. Yes. So there we go. All right. Well, now let's play the What You Reading theme. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 01:19:37 Our official What You Reading theme. Before we get to that, though, I've just got to quickly know the Lord of the Rings thing. This is from Dylan S. I meant to put this in before. First, I'd like to say I'm incredibly excited for doing a Lord of the Rings slash Hobbit set of episodes. Us too. Yeah. I'm really looking forward to doing it.
Starting point is 01:19:50 I'd like to. Sorry, I tuned out for about an hour. What are we doing? I would like to offer my immense knowledge of Middle-Earth universe in your capable hands. I have some questions you might consider for the Lord of the Rings themed episodes. I'm ready. What do you think are some of the original casting choices? So I meant to bring this up earlier.
Starting point is 01:20:05 Thumbs down. No, they're fine. Sean Connery as Gandalf. No. Is that one of the ones he turned out because he didn't understand? Yes. Great. Nick Cage as Aragorn.
Starting point is 01:20:13 I didn't know that one. But I know that, what's his name? The guy from Queen of the Damned, Stuart Townsend, was cast. They started and then they kicked him. Right. Because they're like, he's no good. Bad and bad. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:20:23 Both of those are bad. I agree. And also there are bad. I agree. And also, they're... We know what Nicolas Cage looks like with long hair. We saw the one where he was a witch. Yep, and we saw Con Air. And we saw Con Air. Sorry, his hair blowing in the wind in Con Air.
Starting point is 01:20:35 Yeah, no, I don't like that at all. Yeah. Don't like... And those would take you out of the movie, I think, definitely. Yeah. You'd go, oh, it's Nicolas Cage, chewing scenery. Exactly. It's Sean Connery
Starting point is 01:20:45 not understanding why he's there yes exactly you need an Ian McKellen you need a Viggo Mortensen that's right
Starting point is 01:20:50 exactly also what do you think of the effects at the time pretty good yeah at no point am I like
Starting point is 01:20:56 no that's that's not gonna work yeah and the score I can't remember
Starting point is 01:21:03 it da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da I can't remember it. Oh, yeah. Seems a bit much. Okay. I think it's pretty good. Okay, fine. You know what it's time for now, Mason?
Starting point is 01:21:15 What's it time for? What we reading? What we gotta read. What we reading today? Oh, brilliant. Great. Thank you, Ethan. Yeah, what are we reading today? Ah, brilliant. Great. Thank you, Ethan. Yeah, what are you reading?
Starting point is 01:21:32 What I've been reading is Original Sin, which is the Marvel crossover. Oh, yeah. It's been done for a couple of months, but I'm finally catching up on a whole bunch of stuff. So it's essentially a murder mystery. It's a Who Killed the Watcher murder mystery. Who did it? I'm not going to spoil it. I'm going to read it.
Starting point is 01:21:45 Just wink. I didn't get anything from that. that no it's silly for you to ask really okay it's very solid and it's kind of it it involves a lot of characters it involves a lot of uh unlikely team-ups like you get a doctor strange and the punisher team up oh that's my other things uh and you get it goes to a lot of weird goes to a lot of weird destinations, a lot of weird places. It's super fun. And it's sort of... You know how there's this sort...
Starting point is 01:22:12 There's kind of a gap in the Marvel Universe? Like, there's the 1940s. Yeah. Captain America and Sub-Mariner and etc. Yep. And then there's the modern era. Yes. And then, like, that middle bit keeps expanding.
Starting point is 01:22:24 Yep, yep. Kind of thing. Well, they've filled in some of the blanks of that which i think is really fascinating like i'm kind of like you know you know what happened with earth and you know alien civilizations and blah blah in that in that in those intervening decades great so real good okay how many issues uh four no there's like i want to say there's like there's something like that and there's a whole bunch there's like there's like... I want to say there's like... Ten. Something like that. And there's a whole bunch. There's like eight or ten. I think there's eight, which you can read on their own. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:22:51 And there's a whole bunch of spin-offs. Oh, okay. There's one Spider-Man. One of them is Spider-Man, yeah. Okay. Yeah, it's pretty good. All right, cool. There's an Iron Man versus Hulk.
Starting point is 01:22:59 Oh, that's sweet. Which is pretty good, yeah. Anyway, it's real good, so check that out. Art's great. It's all good. All right, cool. Well, I will check that out art's great it's all good all right cool well i will check that out yep this is from quad okay would love if you two talked a bit i've been working on my reading can you tell i can tell you talked a little bit about the flash versus arrow episode even just for a bit okay haven't seen it i saw it fuck you yeah
Starting point is 01:23:22 i don't have time yeah um we're gonna do a flash wrap-up, kind of, of our wrap-up, but do you want to quickly talk about it now? Yeah, okay. Well, it's your classic scenario where one of them, and I'm not going to say who, is mind-controlled, and so they have to fight. Okay. I'm not going to say. Okay.
Starting point is 01:23:42 It's the Flash, though, isn't it? Yeah, it's the Flash. Yeah. Because he's a young, you know, he's the young hotshot. Okay. Uh, and the, the, uh, it's the Flash though, isn't it? Yeah, it's the Flash. Yeah. Cause he's a young, you know, he's the, he's the young, you know,
Starting point is 01:23:47 hotshot. Yeah. And also, he thinks he's the best. The Flash could just take out a mind-controlled Arrow, I'd imagine, pretty quickly.
Starting point is 01:23:53 Yeah, he wouldn't have the, although, mind-controlled Hawkeye. Oh yeah, good point. Uh, I think it's a solid fight.
Starting point is 01:23:59 I think it's, I think it's a good, like the, the fight, cause we know, they know we love versus. Yeah. Oh yeah. I think it's a, it's a good balance the fight because we know they know we love versus yeah oh yeah i think it's a it's a good balance like they get the characters right like the arrow isn't suddenly incompetent yeah and flash isn't you know somehow you know arrow isn't somehow incompetent or
Starting point is 01:24:22 somehow vulnerable or what have you. Flash isn't. You know, the character, the narrative, it's consistent with both the characters as presented in the show. Yeah, okay.
Starting point is 01:24:32 It's a good solid fight. Okay, cool. I mean, at no point does the Flash run around the world and punch Arrow's head off, which is probably what would have happened,
Starting point is 01:24:40 but, you know... He's not that level yet, though, is he? Yeah, he's got that, he's got a certain level of experience where this is still a fair fight
Starting point is 01:24:45 yeah okay cool it's a good fight so it's well worth watching obviously yes and there's
Starting point is 01:24:50 a good build up in the episode which one do you watch first the Arrow episode or the Flash episode because I know they
Starting point is 01:24:55 you watch Arrow first and then Flash okay but there's not really there's not really anything to the
Starting point is 01:25:02 Arrow episode like it just shows up in Starlink City they solve a crime Starlink City for a little bit. They solve a crime? They hang out for a little bit. And then the actual... All the meat and the action is in the Flash episode.
Starting point is 01:25:11 Okay, great. Which I guess makes sense, because they want the carryover from the Arrow audiences. Yeah, that's the smaller show at the moment. Okay, great. Yeah. Yeah, and it's like... It's sort of a build-up.
Starting point is 01:25:21 Like, there's some callbacks from earlier in the episode that end up in the fight and it's oh great cool it's a good episode any kryptonite there's no kryptonite
Starting point is 01:25:28 really yeah I know okay yeah I actually just finished up the walking dead this week we should do a proper walking dead episode
Starting point is 01:25:35 actually I should say in that episode the way that Flash gets mind controlled it's a little bit it's a little bit contrived okay like it's there's a guy who can control
Starting point is 01:25:48 minds control minds with like he he sort of his eyes glow red and if you see them you get mind control and you become incredibly you don't get mind control strictly speaking become filled with rage oh and like it's quite obvious that that's what he does. Yeah. And Flash goes after him anyway. And then he gets rage-filled. And you're like, why would you? Idiot.
Starting point is 01:26:11 Yeah, why are you an idiot? It's like when he fought that guy who was a gas and he kept running into the gas. Correct, yes. So he's still kind of on that level. Or when he fought multiple men and he kept letting himself be punched. Yeah, that's right, yeah.
Starting point is 01:26:21 Was it multiple men? It was multiplex. Multiplex, oh yeah. The living theatre. Clonio. Clonio, that's right. Was it Multiple Man? It was Multiplex. Multiplex, oh yeah. The Living Theatre. Clonio. Clonio, yeah, exactly. I finished up Walking Dead mid-season break. It started so strong and the ending wasn't bad.
Starting point is 01:26:34 But there's so much faffing about in that show. It should be better. And it was a good finale. And I'm not going to spoil it. You haven't seen it. Some people may not have seen it. But the whole purpose of this season has been to do this particular thing. Right.
Starting point is 01:26:48 And then it was just kind of like, well, that's nothing now. You've just nullified the point of this. Hmm. And I know that I feel like they're trying to do... And I thought this would happen. Because Game of Thrones will kill someone for whatever reason at any point. And you've got that fear hanging over it. A lot of shows are now trying to do that.
Starting point is 01:27:08 Right, okay. Being like, this is the main character. This is what you think is going to happen. And then they twist it. But Walking Dead isn't a good enough show to pull this off. Right, okay. And there are good moments in it. But there's just a lot of the same stuff.
Starting point is 01:27:21 And there's always like zombies walking towards them. And then four of them go and they just quickly stab them in the stuff. And there's always zombies walking towards them, and then four of them go, and they just quickly stab them in the head. And that happens twice an episode. And there's great bits in it. Sitwell's in this latest episode. Oh, sure. And he's good.
Starting point is 01:27:35 And there's a good moment between him and Rick, the main guy, which I won't spoil. There's a lot of it that I like, but it's just not... They both realise they're in Hydra, and they high-five. Yes, that's right. I just think I'd love to see another zombie show come on that's just better and people just jump ship. That's what I think...
Starting point is 01:27:53 Maybe this spin-off will do it. I hope so, to be honest. Because I just think... Because I want it to get better. And I think that would shake it up. Oh, that reminds me also, talking about The Flash. So a lot of people have pointed to the Flash finale promo. It's coming out.
Starting point is 01:28:07 It's Flash versus reverse Flash on a football field, which is our traditional method of determining who is the best because it's the only way to be sure who is the best because there's no distractions. Nope. There's no way to trick your way through. Nope. Just man versus man.
Starting point is 01:28:24 Or woman man Or woman Or Brandon Madame Brandon Yeah that's great Do you think they stole that from us? Is there any possibility of that? Look there's no possibility of it Because they filmed these months in advance
Starting point is 01:28:37 But yes they did steal it from us You'll be hearing from our lawyers By lawyers I mean your dog Send him a video I forgot to mention this at the start Yes They're making another Dark Knight comic There was the Dark Knight Returns
Starting point is 01:28:57 The Dark Knight Strikes Again Oh, Frank Miller They're doing a third one Frank Miller is involved? Frank Miller is involved But he's writing it with Scott Snyder Who's doing the current run of Batman Frank Miller is involved? Frank Miller is involved, but he's writing it with Scott Snyder, who's doing the current run of Batman. Frank Miller is not doing the art.
Starting point is 01:29:08 It's going to Jim Lee and Greg Capullo, and it's going to be an older Carrie Kelly. What a combination! Yeah! What is this? I don't know. I want to see this, though. Yeah, me too, yeah. When is this coming out?
Starting point is 01:29:23 Probably next year sometime probably next year or never probably tomorrow oh great but apparently Frank Miller's age and like he's not the artist that he used to be
Starting point is 01:29:31 and whatever but how exciting that's okay yeah it'll probably be insanity yes it'll be insanity on a level of
Starting point is 01:29:39 Dark Knight Strikes Back or Strikes Again or whatever it's called I think they'll tone down the insanity though in this one and it'll be also All Star Batman and Robin where Frank Miller can get Jim Lee to draw whatever he wants.
Starting point is 01:29:48 Yes. And so there's going to, okay, I know I'm excited for this. Cool. And it's going to be set in that weird retro 80s future as well. I assume so. Yeah. Good. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:29:55 So great. Yeah. I don't, yeah. I mean, it's probably, but you know what? I think there's enough talent around this to kind of... Mitigate the insanity. Exactly. But again, that remains to be seen. Maybe they're just like, listen, let him do what he wants
Starting point is 01:30:11 and you just kind of smooth the edges of this nonsense. But we'll see. Did you know Teen Titans Go, the animated series, is still going? And there's going to be an episode with Carrie Kelly. Oh, really? Like Robin. Time shift? Yeah, maybe.
Starting point is 01:30:24 I don't know. But Teen Titans, they don't really do anything. Like, they're just chilling out. So Robin's got his own team of Robins. Ah. So it's him and, like, Burt Ward Robin and Carrie Kelly. What? And, like, whatever.
Starting point is 01:30:36 And they all team up. Anyway, I just saw a still of that. And it looks fun. Okay. Great. Who knows, man? No one knows. No.
Starting point is 01:30:44 This is from Jim Blobber. Really? Yep. Great. Hey, man. Who knows, man? No one knows. No. This is from Jim Blobber. Really? Yep. Great. Hey, man. I mean, great name. Hey, man. I love the podcast.
Starting point is 01:30:51 I like to put myself the official Korean New Zealand of the Weekly Planet podcast. Done. I tune in every week and I have an unrelated question and a complaint. My family and I are going to the Gold Coast. That is Queensland. Hollywood on the Gold Coast here. Oh, yes. Isn't it?
Starting point is 01:31:04 Over the Christmas break and since you live in Australia, I was wondering if you could suggest any cool parks or places you should definitely visit. I'll try and wear the Weekend Planet t-shirt. They're available. Red bubble.
Starting point is 01:31:14 Weekend Planet t-shirt. It's on the Facebook page. On the Facebook page and stuff. While on the trip, so if you spot me, I'm not going to Queensland anytime soon. Neither am I.
Starting point is 01:31:21 So you'll feel good about yourself knowing that you have fans. It's a long way away. Australia's really big. It really is. Fans are willing to Queensland anytime soon. Neither am I. So you'll feel good about yourself knowing that you have fans. It's a long way away. Australia's really big. It really is. Fans are willing to pay 26 bucks. It's like going to Alaska and saying, hey, we'll see you in Florida. Yeah, sure.
Starting point is 01:31:36 Like it's not. It's not going to happen. Yeah. Feel good about yourself knowing that fans are willing to pay 26 bucks shipping to wear your emblem on their chests and maybe Mason won't quit for another week or so yeah maybe i have a complaint though your laugh not you me oh uh whenever mason says something funny you do out of breath hysterical laugh sound that completely goes
Starting point is 01:31:56 completely silent and i always have to check my podcast is still playing or not well okay well now we've got a better solution which is obviously I say something funny you back away from the mic you bring in your iPad you play the sweet zinger tune
Starting point is 01:32:11 I can't find it now I brought up the other thing I brought up Brandon's son he says change your laugh go to a speech
Starting point is 01:32:20 therapist or something pay him hundreds of dollars so I don't have to waste energy putting my head in my pocket taking out my phone,
Starting point is 01:32:25 adjusting my eyes to look at the screen. Aside from that, you're my favourite podcast and you're hilarious. Keep up the great work. P.S. Mason, you're a legend. I'm going to name my... It says fistborn son.
Starting point is 01:32:34 Ooh. Gross. But alright. Thank you. Firstborn son after you. Yes. Yeah. Queensland, what's going on there?
Starting point is 01:32:41 I don't know. It's beaches. Just go to the beach, man. Yeah, go to the beaches. Stay away from the Cavill Avenue, which is where the drunk idiots are. Oh, yeah. Because you'll definitely get... Depends how far north in Queensland he's going.
Starting point is 01:32:52 That's true. He's going to Airlie Beach. No, he says Gold Coast. Oh, Gold Coast. Yeah. Probably stay on Gold Coast. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:32:58 You go to Warner Brothers Hollywood Movie World on the Gold Coast. Dream World. Dream World's all right. There's a whole bunch of water parks. Wet and Wild, Sea World. All those places. And you just go to the beach, though, aren't they? Yeah, go. Dream world. Dream world's all right. There's a whole bunch of water parks. Wet and Wild, Sea World, all those places. And you just go to the beach, though, aren't they? Yeah, go to the beach. The beach is good.
Starting point is 01:33:08 Queensland is... Like, there's this strip called Cavill Avenue. I don't know if you know it. Whenever I go there, something really terrible happens where I witness girls pulling each other's hair out or something. The last time I went, I was with a group of guys on a Bucks party.
Starting point is 01:33:22 And a guy I didn't really know was arguing with this other guy. And he flicked the cigarette into this guy's face. It bounced off his face. And then he picked it up and he put it out on his shirt. And I was like, Jesus Christ. That's the kind of stuff that gets started in the Gold Coast. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:33:38 Is that when they have the meter maids? The bikini meter maids? It probably is. Yeah. Look out for them. Because otherwise meter maids would get bashed if they weren't in bikinis yeah yeah no i coined that i like it it's good great this is from jonathan oh yes big fan of the podcast and of james's youtube channel yes you guys never fail to make me laugh every week i just graduated this year out of hc hsc loving
Starting point is 01:34:01 the english subject and i have to say your podcast has expanded my vocabulary with words including, but not limited to, disparity, accolade, and diametrically opposed. I've never said any of those. I think they're all your words. Yes. On the topic of vocabulary, there's been something destroying my mind recently. I've noticed with the word interesting, James pronounces it as interesting. That's true.
Starting point is 01:34:24 I do say that. Three syllables. Three syllables. When Mason says interesting. Four syllables. I'm more pret as interesting. That's true. I do say that. Three syllables. When Mason says interesting. Four syllables. I'm more pretentious. Which is it? I say interesting. I say interesting.
Starting point is 01:34:32 And you say interesting. Now, I say that. I think I'm being sarcastic when I say it. So, I like to spread out as many syllables as possible. But I'm right. It is right. That's the way to do it. In normal circumstances, I would say.
Starting point is 01:34:42 Don't look to us for... Anything. No. No. In particular, the English language. Don't look to us for... Anything. No. No. In particular, the English language. Australians make a bloody botched job of it anyway. Which is it? So, yep, it's the Masons one.
Starting point is 01:34:54 Mainly for when it times for both of you to engage in a civil war and run at each other from the opposite sides of a football field, I'll know which side to choose. Yes. Mason side. The side of justice. Thanks, Jonathan. And if I win, I get my choose. Yes. Mason side. The side of justice. Thanks, Jonathan. And if I win, I get my victory theme songs.
Starting point is 01:35:08 I understand. This is from Stephen. Hey, Stephen. Dear James and Nick, my name is Stephen Pritchard. I know. We already know your name's Scott. I'm a huge fan of the show, but I have a question. I'm a mixed martial arts fighter who's training my first fight in February.
Starting point is 01:35:24 Oh, yes. I was wondering, since you have both sold out, correct, and got t-shirts now, is it okay with you guys if I wear one of the goat hand solo shirts when walking into the ring? It will be shown here in England. Is that cool? Yes. Absolutely it is. Yes, it is.
Starting point is 01:35:38 Please, can you send us a link of that fight? Yes. Also, please brutalize your opponent for us. Yes. Use all your skills Yes Use all your skills Use all your skills yeah Yeah Don't just use some of your skills
Starting point is 01:35:47 Every one of them Like I know your coach has probably said Just use the minimal number of skills Yeah just Whatever you think Just use all your skills At once if you can Yeah definitely
Starting point is 01:35:57 Two kicks two punches at once Oh yeah definitely If you could do some classic If you could do some classic like superhero Or your kind of Nerdy kinddy movie attacks. Yes. Like a double-handed punch.
Starting point is 01:36:10 If you could do that where you clasp your hands together and you punch them on the back. Yep. If you can whip off your sunglasses and shoot laser beams. Yep. Do that. Yep, sure. Yeah. Giant Green Monster.
Starting point is 01:36:21 Okay, here's one. Here's an option you could do. You wait till your opponent Is walking to like The coffee vending machine Yes And then Like over like a checkerboard floor
Starting point is 01:36:31 And then you rise out Like you morph out of the floor Behind him And then he turns around And he's looking at himself Because you've morphed into him You've morphed into him Yeah
Starting point is 01:36:41 And then like spike Like a metal spike From your finger through his eye. Yeah. If you could do that, like I reckon you'll definitely win. Absolutely. Yeah. And that will like, that will get on YouTube.
Starting point is 01:36:52 That will go viral. Definitely. If you can do that. Yeah. Yeah. Great. Since I'm giving you guys free advertising, I've got some demands. Okay.
Starting point is 01:36:58 Can I get a, you dickhead from Mason? You're a dickhead. That's only if you win. If you don't win, you get nothing. I'm going to be the white Black Panther. Done. James, I want a lot more rants from you. That's fair enough.
Starting point is 01:37:11 I've been trying to... People like my rants, but I've been trying to be toned down my rants. Oh, yes. I'm trying not to bring my personal life into this. No, bring it back. You must still have some beefs from your childhood that you haven't aired yet.
Starting point is 01:37:21 You don't even know half of it. Thanks, guys. Love the show. Keep filling my head with useless shit. Steven. P.S. Looper is a great film.
Starting point is 01:37:30 Fuck you, Mason. Oh, he's got me. He's got me. Hey, Nick and James. I attended Street Cloud Con. Street... Street...
Starting point is 01:37:41 Where the hell did I get that from? I don't know. Steel City Con. What? I don't know. Steel City Con. What? I don't know. Today... We've been doing this for a while, haven't we? Today on December 5th,
Starting point is 01:37:49 and John Weasley's ship, John Wes... Oh! John Weasley's ship from both Flash shows were there. Dawson and Dawson's dad. Yes, and Dawson's dad. I'm excited for this, actually. My dad got his autograph on his Flash comic from the old show,
Starting point is 01:38:01 and he did a Q&A with us and gave us some information on an upcoming episode, as well as what's to come in the future. Steel City Con, Pittsburgh. Yeah. So, potential spoilers, I guess, for this. First, he said there'll be an episode of The Flash where Barry tries to break his father out of prison. However, his father becomes too much of a hassle
Starting point is 01:38:16 because he can't move super fast and he decides just to go back to prison. Just pick him up over your head. Just rut him out like you're delivering a pizza. You can do that with Felicity. John Wesley Shipp's
Starting point is 01:38:29 pretty buff though. Yeah, that's probably it. Second, season two of The Flash is going to start building up to the Justice League but he didn't give any more information
Starting point is 01:38:36 about which heroes will be in the Justice League. Everyone but Superman and Batman, I'd say. Yeah, totally. And Wonder Woman and Cyborg. Also not The Flash
Starting point is 01:38:43 or Arrow. Yes. So I reckon what? Adam? I reckon it'll not the Flash and Aquaman or Arrow they're out so I reckon what Adam I reckon it'll be the joke Justice League from the 80s Blue Beetle
Starting point is 01:38:50 Booster Gold Rocket Red Guy maybe Green Lantern Gnort maybe a Martian Manhunter depending on what they're going to do with him
Starting point is 01:38:58 yeah maybe but they've already used him in Smallville okay yeah but they've used all these guys in Smallville everybody's in Smallville except for Bruce Wayne didn't they've used all these guys in Smallville. Everybody's in Smallville.
Starting point is 01:39:05 Yeah, I guess. Except for Bruce Wayne. Didn't they have like Johnny Karate or something instead? Yeah, it was Johnny Karate. It was Adam something. Adam Dark Karate. Oh, Adam Karate. Also, Adam West and Burt Ward were supposed to be here, but they cancelled their appearances
Starting point is 01:39:18 due to the fact that they hate each other. Great. So yeah, that was kind of a bummer. I didn't know that. No, that's true. Anyways, give up maybe that's kind of like uh you gave a telephone where it's like oh they could he couldn't make it because scheduling and they couldn't make because of scheduling and then it people made you know people oh yeah well it's probably because they hate each other yeah sort of become the fact
Starting point is 01:39:39 maybe it's like a shatner uh what's his name no they like they like each other Zulu Takei Takei they hate each other apparently everybody when George got married yes
Starting point is 01:39:49 he invited everybody but Shatner wow like everybody in the world everybody yeah we had a good

Starting point is 01:40:29 Okay, so this was... I'm not sure what video it is. It doesn't matter. Yeah, it doesn't matter. This is from John Doe, so we'll never find him. That's right. There's two comments.
Starting point is 01:40:40 This is the first one. Kill yourself, you dumbass Brit. No, it's good. This is a bunch of bullshit all caps for real all caps on the real yeah that's one this is the second one see people think i'm british yeah yeah this makes me happy that the brits whenever i yell it's yeah yeah this makes me happy that the brits were defeated in the revolutionary war fuck you and your silly queen yeah good This makes me happy that the Brits were defeated in the Revolutionary War.

Starting point is 01:41:23 Yeah. I wish we didn't lose that war, to be honest. Oh, well. Next one. Come with them all.
