Welcome back everybody to another episode of the weekly planet where we talk movies and comics and TV shows.
My name is James, also known as Mr. Sunday with his eyes. Shake out of me.
It's my ghost, Nick Mason.
A bridge too far, I think, James.
I needed a minute to think. A can crack and a little slurp.
You know people don't like it when we eat and drink.
You eat and drink.
I know. I know. I know, and I love it. That's the thing.
Sure, I know they don't like it.
But I think they're going to allow me this one-off.
We'll have a little sip in the intro
Why you had a tough week?
Not hopefully
But I just think it's okay to have a little sip
Of Coca-Cola by the way
Little sippy dip of the Coke
Okay, are we sponsored?
Terrific
We won't be seeing any of that money though
Oh
I requested that we do it
It's more of a charity thing
For Coca-Cola
Well I mean they've had some tough times
Haven't they?
Exactly
Some stiff competition
Remember they changed Coke
And then they changed it back or whatever
Yes
Yeah that was brutal
Repeated
Yeah it's been good
Yeah
Remember when they got
You know
They nearly got
They nearly lost all their market share to R.C. Cola.
Remember that?
Tough times, man.
Remember they nearly lost their market share to...
LA Ice.
LA Ice?
I was going to say Virgin Cola.
Virgin Cola.
Richard Branson.
Wow, okay.
Famous friend of Jeffrey Epstein, Richard Branson.
Star of Superman Returns, Richard Branson.
Star of Casino Royale, Richard Branson.
Probably getting on a plane to go somewhere in that scene.
He almost certainly was.
He was being patted down, probably for stuff.
For stuff?
that scene. It's unrealistic. He would never be patted down for anything. That's true. Yeah.
Mason, you're not going to believe the week that we're having. Oh, yes. In terms of movies.
I could, I could imagine it. We both saw Evil Dead Burn. Correct. The latest Evil Dead movie. Yes.
And we also, one of us, saw Moana Live Action. It wasn't me. Yeah, I was going to say Moana 2, but there was
Moana 2. There already happened. This is Moana 1 again. Plans for Moana 3 in your life?
There is going to be a Moana 3. Okay. But maybe this.
This will stop that from happening.
Sriana.
Yeah.
Moan three.
They should have just done threeana, Moan three.
Yeah, but then, now the Rock would have still gotten a big paycheck, wouldn't it?
Yeah.
Yeah.
The budget on this movie was absolutely, it's criminal, Mason.
Yeah.
Somebody, Richard Branson should go to jail for it.
I think he should.
Yeah.
Just for that.
Just for this, yeah.
But we've got some news in the lead-up.
We've got some official art for Avengers Doomsday in the lead-up to their San Diego
Comic Con appearance.
And I said, I saw it and I said, that's inspiring.
That's inspired me to do good in the world.
Yeah, because you saw a Captain America in a t-shirt.
He's wearing that t-shirt.
He's got a beard.
He's got a beard version is the one people like maybe.
What's he been doing, going down the shops in that t-shirt?
Is that what he's...
Is he been doing that?
Yeah, all the teams are there.
They're all looking.
It looks like a fan-made poster, is what I'd say.
Well, Mason, it's also the last work of Andy Park.
It's the last work he did for the MCU.
Ah, I guess he is a big fan.
He made a little comment about it.
Wait, did he die?
No, they all got fired.
Do you remember that?
And they just fired like the entire art department or whatever?
Oh, I do remember that.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
You don't need them.
Sure, absolutely.
Oh, that's right, because they did and all they hot, didn't they fire a bunch of concept art guys and all sorts of stuff?
Yeah, visual effects.
Well, I mean, you don't really need concept guys when they provide you with a hundred concept sketches and you go with the least interesting one.
Captain America and a T-shirt.
Captain America and a T-shirt.
It's Serpent Society, but it's just Jean-Callo Esposito holding a knife or whatever.
In a t-shirt.
In a T.
He did have a T-shirt on.
So we're also going to talk about how D.C. studios are skipping San Diego Comic-Con again.
That's right.
Fourth year in a row.
We've got trailers for Dune 3 in Godzilla minus zero.
And then we're going to, we've got a new segment called Nolan's colon, where we talk about a corner of Christopher Nolan's life.
Oh, yes.
And just some pockets of information that are in that colon.
Okay.
Did we speak to his doctor?
Is that what's happening here?
I've had some correspondence.
some of which I can share.
But it's basically about like...
You guys share the same colon guy?
We do, yeah.
Yeah, okay, right.
We basically...
It's Richard Branson.
Oh, no.
We are...
He's talking about the controversy,
well, controversy.
The backlash.
Controversy.
Yeah, that's what he would say.
We've also got some information about,
in terms of like how it's tracking for opening,
because it's, of course, opening this coming week,
which is very exciting.
And also, he talks about the rumors of that blue thunder remit.
Oh, that's right.
Yes.
Yeah.
Because the rumour was going to be
that Tom Holland and Matt Damon
were going to be expert chopper pilots or something.
Yeah.
We'll get to it.
There's time codes below if you want to jump to anything in particular.
Avengers Doomsday official art.
Again, this is done by Andy Park.
He wrote this about it on his Instagram.
I just did it for an Andy Lark, he said.
Did he?
Yeah.
And then I got fired.
Oh, no.
They said, don't do it for a Lark.
Commit to it.
Andy Park says,
Avengers Doomsday was the final full film
made the opportunity to lead as director of visual development
at Marvel Studios.
Okay, so we didn't just make the poster.
He does others.
No, absolutely.
He did, and it's not a...
Yeah.
It was truly an honour,
and I was grateful to commemorate that journey
with this marketing illustration,
which officially reveals for the first time
the characters in their looks for the film.
Obviously, though, that just the main cast,
there will be 100 cameos in both these subsequent movies.
Probably more Secret Wars, but yes.
So it seems to be there's going to be three universes here.
Yes.
There's the mainline MCU universe.
Oh, yes.
There's the Fantastic Four Univores.
which is not actually in the mainline MCU universe.
It's in a different MCU universe.
For now.
For now.
It's in the 1960s dimension or whatever.
And then the X-Men Fox universe.
Yeah.
Even though Kelsey Gramer looks different.
They all look a little different.
Mystique looks different as well.
She's got a sort of a face tattoo situation.
Oh, wow.
Okay.
I said wow also when I saw it.
I'm glad you share my sentiments.
Yes.
Yeah.
Of things we love.
So the MCU team, it's Chris Evans, Captain America.
Chris Hemsworth's story.
It's got all the thunderbolts.
Yep, yep.
Falcons over on the other side.
He's on the other side.
With his good friend, other Falcon.
Yep.
Captain America's second Falcon.
That's true.
And he's not Falcon.
He's still Captain America.
Champa is there.
Yeah, so it's Shuri and Mbaku.
And I think they're...
That's his, that's on his separate posters.
It says Shang Chi is there.
And they look like they're in the Fantastic Four universe.
Because you remember the trailer they all meet?
Yeah, they're in that...
The weird void.
Big sandbank or whatever they're in.
Weird, void.
The Fantastic Four are they obviously
from the Fantastic Four movie
And then the X-Men universe is Cyclone.
But which Fantastic Four movie?
Oh, good question.
The recent one that came out,
maybe bombed, I can't remember.
As well as they would have liked, I can't remember.
I thought it was all right.
I thought it was all right also.
But I can't remember.
No.
It was all right.
Robots!
And they set up big antennas.
Big antennas.
Mole man was there.
Big men.
The Red Ghost wasn't there.
He wasn't there.
They filmed him, but he wasn't there.
That's the guy who had the gorillas that he would use to fight.
Correct, yes.
Some of the guerrillas were in it.
Yeah, briefly, I think.
Yeah.
John Malkovich, they took him out of the movie.
Correct.
So the X-Men team is Cyclops Beast, Magnet, Mystique, Nightcrawler, Professor Rex and Gamblet.
And in the background, of course, looking over everything, being like, I did this, is Dr. Doom.
Mr. Doom.
Yeah.
There he is.
God.
Pretty good stuff.
Is it, Mason?
No.
I mean, it's a, you know, whatever.
I think it's...
Where's Spider-Man?
Is Spider-Man on that poster?
I didn't see him, no.
Interesting.
Which isn't to say he isn't lurking in the shadows.
No, I would say he's almost...
Skitting around under your desk.
He's almost certainly in the movie.
But of course, they're holding back on some cameos in this.
I'm just bringing it up now and having a good look, say.
Have a good squiz.
Yeah, I don't think he is here.
But there was two Falcons.
Sorry, one's Captain America.
Yes.
Yeah.
Yes.
God, I'm just looking, I'm just going to do a quick.
Okay.
Thor's there. He's got his big axe thing.
He does have his big axe thing.
Yeah, that's good.
Was he in the official casting announcement, Tom Holland?
Probably.
Let's just quickly scroll through those chairs.
Yeah.
The video of the chairs?
It's highly expected he will appear.
The studios kept his involvement under wraps.
I think that's because Spider-Man's out this month.
Yes.
So we'll see what happens after that.
What dimension he gets stuck in?
Yeah, because that would be a spoiler for the end of Spider-Man brand-new day.
And you'd hate to do that.
like the time they revealed he was alive in his own movie.
I'm in a wrong dimension now.
Did you hear he's excited about...
I'm in a wrong dimension now.
He's excited about not being a boy anymore.
Help him in a wrong dimension now.
Help him in a wrong dimension.
You're sorry, he's excited to be a boy one more time?
Yeah, yeah, I can only be a boy one more time.
And then I'm a man.
I'm a man.
Can you declare when you're not going to be a boy anymore?
Or is the general public have to?
I think he's bought a house.
Okay.
I think that's the general...
He probably did that 12 years ago.
Yeah, probably.
Well, then he could have said he was a man 12 years ago.
I'm actually a man now.
I'm a man now.
Did you consider his Nathan Drake a man?
No.
He's Nate to Drake?
No.
That was a boy in a spirit Halloween costume.
Oh, okay, right.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Deadline spoke to the Russo brothers about, like, what they're going to do next.
Yeah.
And they said, I don't know, some crap.
Because they.
I don't know, some whatever crap, you know.
Look, we're going to need $300 million.
Yeah.
And we promise you to just some crap.
You can put on Netflix or Prime or Dougal cancer.
Yeah, it's fine.
Torrance.
It'll be on.
Torrance. But nobody will download the Torrance. You'll go to click the Torren. You'll be like,
well, that's zero-seaters. Yeah, that's interesting. Okay, I'll just set this up and have it fully
downloaded in three years when one of the Rousseau puts it up. Because they've said before that,
look, they're not going to do another Marvel movie, but they said whether or not we collaborate
with Marvel beyond that, it's certainly a possibility. But right now, the narrative vision is just to get
through Secret Wars at this point. Because again, there's that speculation that Secret Wars will be
two movies, which I think maybe it will be if Doomsday does really, really well.
Absolutely.
I might be like, we could do three of these.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
But then maybe that's leaving it too late to make two movie.
I don't know.
Maybe if it's great, if it tests well.
Yeah.
I don't know how it's going to go.
Because just looking how things are just falling out of the sky in terms of box office.
Oh, yeah.
You'd never think would bomb as badly as they are.
We had this conversation off here.
And last week, just the millennial thing.
No, yeah, well, this is the, the, um, the upcoming enclave.
Face, which is a DC horror movie, which, you know, recently a bunch of horror movie stuff
has been doing very well at the box office, but will this specific thing do well at the
box office?
Yeah.
Because I don't think it'll do obsession numbers because that is a phenomenon.
Yeah.
And it probably won't do a million dollars.
Probably won't do backroom numbers.
Yeah.
But you'd assume that, oh, like people like horror, maybe, you know, it'll do okay.
But then maybe people are like, a superhero universe, I don't know.
I don't know about this.
Like maybe it may be funny if it did not do well.
I hope it does very well.
It's always funny when things don't do well.
We had the conversation about how like superhero stuff.
Some people are like, oh, it's very millennial coded.
Yeah, last week they said that exact thing in relation to Supergirl.
Yeah, right.
And I also said this to you, pre.
I mean, maybe we should stop having these conversations because then we have to reiterate
them because it bores us.
Yeah.
Because we know this already.
Well, people don't know this, but when we arrive separately on our private jets,
we have a brief conversation on the tarmac.
because we come into the recording studio.
Yes, we should cut that out.
We should, we should park at separate sides of the recording.
It's my house.
I just go up and do a loop and come back.
Yeah, that's right.
Well, you've got to burn those.
You've got to burn that fossil fuel.
You've got to spend money to make money.
That's so true, isn't it?
You know, you've got to beat Taylor Swift as the most prolific user of private jets, you know?
Yes.
And you can't do that sitting around in your own house, can you?
I won't do it.
We'll cut out the private chats.
We'll only have them.
Public.
Public.
Yeah.
But yeah, because like.
Public chats.
Public chats.
You know what they say?
That's what they say.
I think people want public spats.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I think, yeah, because, you know, younger generations and us, so Gen Alpha and Gen Z,
they want a backroom's in an obsession or whatever.
Yeah.
What they actually want is, like, young filmmakers, making stories that they're interested in.
But also millennials like that stuff as well.
Yeah.
So, like, as has been shown with them.
And my parents, who also saw.
They did like obsession, didn't they?
So, you know, it's, um, it's interesting.
It's interesting.
Anyways, so the MCU there will be at,
Marvel will be at Comic-Con,
and they're going to have,
we're going to get a look at comics and movies
and TV shows and video games, including,
like,
are they stealing our format?
Yes.
Wow.
I know.
God.
They're doing,
things like there's going to be a look at the Wolverine game,
the new season of X-Men 97,
which I should start because apparently it's very good,
and I enjoy it the first season.
And there's going to be a Hall H.
Hall H?
How do people say it?
I don't know.
One of them's,
One of them is supposed to be posh and one's supposed to be common.
Oh.
Like they're like, oh, only idiots say, but I don't remember which one it is.
Let's use the posh one when we're in our planes.
That's true, true, isn't it?
We're going to have valets to tell us which one it is.
I think it's, it's H.
H is...
I think it's...
H is for dullards, is it not?
I don't know, man.
I don't know, man.
I don't know, man.
We could ask Google.
I don't know, man.
I don't know.
And so, yeah, we're going to get a look at what's next with movies.
I love knowing what's...
What's next?
Movies.
Did we make a mistake calling this podcast the weekly planet, not What's Next with movies?
What's Next with Movies?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Well, we also talk about other things.
But yeah, what is next with movies?
Well, speaking of...
We could call it, we could have called it What's Next with movies and other things.
And whatever else is.
I feel like we've unnecessarily pigeonholed ourselves.
You're right.
Because with other things, that includes everything.
Yeah, that's true.
Different recipes.
Different recipes.
Yeah.
You know, you go to a brewery and they're like, do you want to try this weird beer?
That might be a thing.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Mason
I was at a pub
The other day
Oh yes
I was drinking Guinness
which I enjoy
Oh yes
And they're like
You know what you should
Sponsored?
This is sponsored
But we're not getting in the money
It's got to Coca-Cola
Okay
You know there's a
You know when they
They often they'll have like
Their own
Rue or whatever
And they're like we have this stout
I'll pour you a little bit
You could try this
And I
And I feel bad doing this
But I'm at the age
It's like I drank and I'm like
I'll just have another Guinness
Wow
Alright
But I don't want this
You made this
I don't want it
Give me the thing that I want.
Probably not unless it's the guy who actually brood it.
And he's like...
I don't know if it was.
Well, it might have been.
You could say, are you the guy that actually brood this?
You are?
I don't like it.
That's rude, is what you're saying.
We should do it though.
I think it's honest.
Yeah.
Anyway, I appreciate it.
I don't like your weird niche beers, you could say.
I don't like weird niche beers.
Wow.
Regular beers, please.
I don't even like beer that much.
Mason, DC Studios are skipping San Diego Comic Con for the fourth year in a row.
Wow, they don't even need it.
Well, these are things.
People have pointed to this interview with James Gunn from New Rock Stars from October of last year,
where he says, where he says, sometimes you're really better from going to Comic-Con
and spending millions of dollars and seeing the idea, especially when you have a great trailer
or something like that.
But other times, I post a picture of a cover of a screenplay on Instagram for $0.00,
and it's equally effective and you get just as much press.
You have to ask yourself what's worth spending money on.
So true, isn't it?
I don't disagree.
Do you think that, just as a side note, do you think instead of doing an interview,
with new rock stars, he could have done an interview with old rock stars.
Just like Keith Richards, Jean Simmons.
To awful men.
Peter Frampton.
The awful man hour.
They've just been handed cards with obscure questions about comic book properties.
And they're like, what are you, are you going to?
Gene Simmons would be like, I think there was a kiss comic book once.
Do you have anything to say about that?
That was Marvel, Gene Simmons.
And you all got fantastic four style powers, I think.
Whoa, that's great.
Aren't they a good band?
No, I don't think so.
I don't think they're either.
I've got a couple good songs.
Like what?
Name seven.
I was Made for Love in you.
That's okay.
Yeah.
Beth.
Right.
God gave rock and roll to you.
I'll concede as a good song.
That's a good one, yeah.
But everything else I'm like, can take or leave this.
Well, that's seven songs.
Moving on.
But I, look, I see where he's coming from.
But I think there is...
Gene Simmons.
No.
Never.
I think there is something about bringing
things, maybe not Comic-Con, but having an event.
Yes.
Where there's like a showmanship to it.
For sure.
And like a carnival bark.
Stan Lee.
Stanley, exactly.
I think that...
Kevin Feigy, the ever charismatic Kevin Feigy.
Yeah.
Hey, everybody.
Look at a list of movies.
These are coming out over the next day years.
And then there's like a little bit of clapping and then he's like, now he's the
Stan Lee hologram.
Hey, true believers.
And everybody's like, yeah.
They whip their shirts off.
They're whipping them around in the air.
This is good.
But do you know what I mean by that?
100%.
Yeah.
And I think also you can't, like I understand where he's coming from because like if you quantify it, yes.
And his Instagram and whatever still hits the same spots.
Spots and demographics.
But you know, and I guess we are like in a lot of ways because we literally just talked about it.
We're past the big Comic-Con reveal kind of thing.
But bringing stuff I think maybe not even like I said, not even there.
two people, I think there is value in that.
And I also think that if he's just tweeting a thing,
what would happen is that he tweets it and then the various media outlets
just retweet it, I guess, or make a short article.
Yeah.
Which people are like, well, I'm going to ignore that because I already saw the tweet or whatever.
But if you go out on stage and you drop a bombshell, then that gets, I think that gets more.
I agree.
And I think also, we've talked about this.
He tweets or whatever, whatever he does on threads and Instagram, too much.
Yeah.
He doesn't need to respond to, not every, because he obviously doesn't respond to everything,
but like criticisms and fake casting and like, and leaks that aren't true.
You don't have to, like, we'll talk about later, but like Christopher Nolan, he doesn't say anything.
And then when he, he's quick to not respond.
And then when he does say something, it's like, oh, whoa, whoa.
He said it.
He's talking to me.
Yeah.
Yes, I am an interviewer with you.
But you're just talking to me.
Less is more, Mason.
Less is more.
But despite all of that HBO are bringing lanterns, though, to their HBO panel.
I see.
Which is a different thing.
They're like, we've escaped your clutches, James Garn.
You can't stop us.
We're HBO.
No.
We stand for quality or something.
Sometimes we do.
We're not TV.
We're HBO, but we are TV.
Yeah.
You can find us on your TV.
That's right.
Yeah.
So, anyway, interesting.
Something.
Is it?
I don't know.
Was it?
Can it be?
Yes.
Are the times changing?
No.
All right.
Things are the same.
Things have never been more of the same.
Let me just say,
yes.
Thank God.
Yeah, I agree.
Because if I'd have a new opinion,
I don't know what bridge I'd jump off,
as many as I could.
Yeah, I was going to say probably all the bridges
until one stuck.
Do you want to do some trailers?
Mm-hmm.
Because this trailer is a hoi time.
Honk tingling.
We're bringing trailers to the people,
which is how you should do it.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah, James Gunn.
Take notes.
Take notes.
Do you want to start with Dune Part 3?
Yes.
What do you have to say about that?
Timothy Shalemay, he shaved that head again, hasn't he?
Yeah.
You know, good look for him.
I know people are like, have become anti-Timothy Shalamee for obvious reasons.
Because he was in everybody's face for a long time.
Yeah, because he's annoying.
Sure, absolutely.
No, because people find him annoyed.
Sure.
For whatever reason.
But like, if you look at his filmography, and this is embarrassing,
but I literally had a dream last night where I said this to Timothy Shalamee,
this is not a joke.
Hey, bro.
Where he was upset.
Okay.
Because he didn't win that.
Because it didn't win the Oscar.
It didn't win the ping pong tournament.
This is an insane dream to have.
I should probably take some time off work.
Do you think it's related to that weird stout you drank?
That was unrelated.
There was like a weak...
That thimble of stout you had, but it wasn't...
But they said it was psychedelic mushroom stout.
And he said, all right, I'll try it.
The Timothy Shalomey made.
And then I'll pick my kids up from school.
But it was basically...
And I do agree with this, this thing that I said to Timothy Shalemay in a dream.
Yeah.
Is it like he's had an incredible run.
Agreed.
The quality of...
of his output
to compare to
to like other people
his age and how it's been
perceived.
Yes.
Is,
despite him not having an Oscar
is incredible.
Martin Supremus.
Martin Supreme.
Dunes?
The Dunes movies.
He did that Bob Dylan thing.
Yep.
Call me by your name.
Even,
and I was so skeptical
of him as Willie Wonka.
Sure.
He's really good in that movie.
It's pretty good.
How is that a good movie?
Like a Gene Wilder
Willy Wonka prequel
should not work at all.
And some would argue it doesn't work.
I think a lot of people like that movie, including me.
I think he's...
I remember a thing...
He's charming in that movie.
I remember the thing was better
than I thought it would be.
Yeah, it's way better than the fucking Johnny Depp.
It's also the director of Paddington 1 and 2.
Well, if you're comparing it to the Johnny Depp one?
I compare everything to the Johnny Depp one.
Wow.
But yeah, it's like...
Because again, it's the director of Paddington 1 and 2 and whatever.
Timothy Howl Shalamey.
What?
And he did those YouTube controller reviews.
Oh, that's true.
So, yeah, I think he's doing incredible.
work. I think he should have gone with Halshallamee. Halshall? Hell shall. It would have been like
hashtag halshall, you know? Halshall? He's had an interesting like evolution because this is,
when you, when you Google him, that's the first. God, he's a jagged little fellow, isn't he?
He's going to say that's the first, he's really mugging in his first photo. But then when you go to his
Wikipedia page, something of a different look. Famously, because they have to be,
there's no, there can't be any copyright on the Wikipedia photos or whatever. It's always one guy.
And it's always the worst photo.
It is absolutely.
You look up any person on Wikipedia,
it's the worst photo you can find.
There is a guy who takes photos at all the various comic cons and whatever,
and he provides all the photos for free, I think.
So a lot of them, when you look at somebody's,
when you look at somebody's Wikipedia page and it's like,
this is from Comic Con 2009 or whatever.
It's because that guy provided it for free.
That guy was there.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
I mean, he was in Interstellar as well.
He's not at much.
And his uncle's Rodman Flender.
I love Rodman Flander.
You love the Fender software for Flander.
various special effects and so forth.
I'm not going to love dabbled in Flandering.
Absolutely.
But anyways.
Oh,
interstellar?
He's in that.
Yeah, it's what I just said.
That's what I just said.
He's briefly in her briefly.
I was talking about,
I was thinking about Rodman Flander.
No, you weren't.
Who is a American filmmaker and actor.
Yeah.
There he is.
Yeah.
He contributed to the Harvard Lampoon.
Yeah.
That's like,
that's kind of no,
Brian did that as well, I think.
He's in a bunch of,
wait, he directed Lepricon to.
Oh, that's a great movie.
And that's a great movie.
That's a great movie.
Agreed.
Conan O'Brien can't stop, which is the documentary.
Oh, I haven't seen that.
Probably because they were in the Harvard Lampoon together.
Yeah, must be nice, man.
Yeah.
Must be freaking nice all the time, man.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So, yeah, anyway, June 3 poses the question,
which the other Dune Movies or books would never dare to ask.
Yes.
What if Paul O'Trad is bad, actually?
Yeah.
What if, what you thought he was a hero, Mason?
I found it, I would have found it inconceivable that he would be a villain of any kind.
Watching those previous two movies, I'm like, yeah.
He won at the end.
Yeah.
He won the big knife fight.
He screamed at that woman at the end.
Paulie A, I said.
And Christopher Walken was like, ah.
Yeah, exactly.
And he was like, I'm the emperor now, Christopher Walken.
You stupid idiot.
I'm going to knife fight this white sperm man, play by Austin Butler.
Oh, no, my sperm man.
You've killed him, my sperm man.
He did kill his sperm man.
That's true.
Yeah.
Those are great movies.
Now you're the emperor, I guess.
He is, ah.
People can't see it, but after every time Mason does the impression,
he just throws his hands up, like, I don't know.
I don't know.
It got away from me instantly.
I don't know.
So, Denise Villanou, in five years, has separately filmed three Dune Dune
movies.
Again, didn't film them all once.
To who?
join my club
I don't know
The cool guy club
Throw your hands up
The cool guy club
Timothy Chalamay's in it
First photo
Not second photo
But isn't that
Like phenomenal
That he's done this
And look
This one
Maybe it won't be good
Maybe
The D Villanue
Will make an awful movie
For once in his life
Maybe
But his output is like
The quality
And the speed in which he does
He's got a
Quistopher Nolan quality
To it
He does
And he's gonna do
James Bond eventually
with the guy who wrote serenity?
That's not going to matter.
That's not going to matter, makes it.
It's going to be the best movie.
All right.
I'm saying it now.
Okay.
All right.
God.
Anyway, just phenomenal work.
Two years after the last two years.
Two years.
He's doing this.
Also, Robert Patton is here.
That's true.
Does he have bad hair?
Yes.
Does he have eyebrows?
No.
That contributes to the bad hair.
That counts as bad hair.
I think so too.
Yeah.
God.
And he wants to take care.
over Paul Atreides because he's the brother of Florence Pugh's character who married Paul
the Trades.
Yeah.
And Zendaya doesn't like that either.
So true.
Paul Atreides has killed a...
What about in the movie?
I don't know about that.
But it's killed a billion people or whatever.
No, more than that on multiple...
A squillion people, I said.
A squillion people, yeah.
I've killed a squillion people.
That's what people said.
Yeah.
Duncan Idaho...
I've got to save the universe.
I've got to kill another squillion more.
And I'll do it.
No one will do it.
No one's brave enough.
I'm the greatest actor in the world.
He might be.
Yeah.
Duncan Idaho returns, even though he was murdered.
So he's some kind of
Gollum resurrection...
Correct, yes.
Man, clone man, right?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Duncan Clonedahoe.
Okay.
Yeah.
Did he?
I don't know.
I don't know if he should do that.
I don't know if he should do that.
That's cool and exciting.
This will probably...
Do you reckon this will be the last
Denis Villeneuve dune movie for at least of time being?
Yep.
Unless it makes a billion dollars.
Which it might.
It might.
Because it's tracking some people are saying better than Next Avengers.
Yeah.
I would guess that all the principal
cast of this alike.
We're actually tired of wearing the weird suits
and putting the thing up our nose.
Let's take a break from this.
We can do wear various Spiderman's
and our weird indie movies for a little bit.
Maybe a Wonka too.
And then,
then De Nive Villan,
you can make your James Bond movie
with a guy that wrote Serenity
and then we'll recalibrate after that.
He's also a peekie blinders fella, that guy.
Andy created who wants to be a millionaire.
Oh yeah.
Pecky Blinders movie as well.
I didn't see it.
Not good.
Nobody says it's good.
It's interesting.
Trocious.
Yeah.
Well, the blind is not particularly peaky.
No, they weren't, Mason.
Or the blind, the peaks weren't particularly blind?
Correct.
Okay.
Yeah.
All right.
Well.
Neither of them.
Neither of them.
This is our December 17th.
Pretty good.
Very year.
My goodness.
Speaking of movies coming out this very year, we got a...
The Bigger Man.
We're a Godzilla minus zero trailer.
Yes.
Which is a sequel.
He's back and he's mad.
He's mad and he's big and he's mad.
Nobody in the trailer seems particularly.
surprised that he is back?
No.
Even though he died.
Well, yeah, he's head exploded and he's sunk to the bottom of the ocean and whatever
happened to him.
But Godzilla is immortal and it's forever.
Yeah, but they don't know that. I don't know that yet.
They're probably like it's another Godzilla.
I bet somebody saw him.
You reckon?
That's why they weren't surprised.
A coral diver or something?
A coral diver saw him.
Okay.
God, terrifying Godzilla in this.
Agreed.
How are they doing that in this one?
Like, you know, there's the one particular shot where he's out of the water and just the
scale of him.
Look of it.
Oh, they get a bloke in a suit.
Oh, okay.
Yeah, yeah.
And a little boat.
Oh, yeah, that'll work.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
They get some of the smallest actors they have.
They put them in the boat.
Yeah.
And then they get a really big bloke and a big rubber suit.
Okay.
And he's like,
like,
like that.
All right.
Yeah.
So this is, again,
it's the same director,
Takashi Yamazaki,
who did the first one.
Yeah.
If you haven't seen Godzilla minus one,
it's an incredible movie.
I've seen it.
It's probably the best Godzilla movie.
Oh,
if you're not including Godzilla 990,
seven or eight.
I'm not.
Wow.
But even if I was, it would be, that would still ring true.
Yeah, just see, look in that shot out of the water.
It's like the size of the, like, the way the water falls off here that shows his scale.
Like, they just, this is something that the new, the modern Godzilla, the American movies, have just stopped doing, really.
Yeah.
I stopped doing this kind of weight and scale and all of that.
They're just not really.
Yeah, like, I mean, again, the monsterverse ones are fun, but that last one didn't it just have a bunch of,
monsters fighting in the zero gravity center of the earth or whatever, just floating about?
Yeah, you might be misremembering.
I don't think I am.
I don't know.
I don't think I am.
I have heard also that the next one is mostly just that.
Terrific.
Just that kind of stuff.
Have you heard that from your son who's just made up his arm?
No, Mason, I spoke to a guy.
Oh, no.
One of your industry contacts.
I don't have any or many, but it's pretty much in line with what they've been.
doing for good oil.
Well, you know, why mess with the formula?
Yeah, that's out.
When you could come up with a better movie.
Yeah, that's right.
I think they're fun.
They are fun.
So that's good for you, right?
Yep.
This is out, I still haven't watched the second season of Monarch.
Have you?
No.
This is out November 3rd.
Speaking of things coming out.
Yes.
It's Nolan's Colin time.
Oh, terrific.
This is a space where we talk all the Christopher Nolan news.
Yes, sure.
An orifice where we can talk all the Christopher Nolan news.
I don't think you miss using that word.
I don't think you know what it means.
I think you know if I know what it means.
Correct, I don't.
I can make a guess.
But I don't know for sure.
I don't know the inner workings of your mind.
You might have seen, but this apparently the trailer has 600,000 dislikes.
I'll talk about that a minute because I don't think that's entirely accurate.
But the telegraph spoke to Christopher and Olin about a number of things,
including the backlash to this movie.
Casting accents.
Do you think the telegraph is going to come back, Christopher Nolan?
And he said, oh, anything is possible.
Sounds delightfully retro
That the telegraph would come back
Telegraph
Sounds like something I would be interested
It does, doesn't it?
A daily telegraph?
How delightfully wicked, he said.
A daily, the telegraph daily?
You love being in Nolan's collar, I can tell already.
Yeah, I do, I do, yeah.
So, yeah, if I get to do my famous
Christopher Null impression.
Which is just you.
A telegraph!
I'm wearing a scarf.
You know,
Sometimes he is.
Yeah, sometimes he is.
You wear a big coat.
So, again, it's people have been complaining about the casting.
It's not accurate.
The costumes is not accurate.
Christopher's casting.
Everyone's American.
Maybe it's in the future.
Do you think it might be in the future?
This doesn't matter to me.
None of this matters to me.
Like, at all.
You're very, you're fired up for this movie.
I am.
Of course I am.
A friend of the show, Dave Warnocky,
messages and said,
he's thinking about covering the Odyssey
on his podcast bookchee.
And you said,
you would love to do the show ordinarily,
but you don't want to know
what happens in the Odyssey.
Because I have an idea,
but I don't want to play by play of it
a day before I see it.
Anyway, so he said in regards to the controversy.
Yes.
It comes,
which is how we say it in Australia sometimes.
That's right.
Depending on how we're feeling.
If you're from Adelaide.
It said it comes to the territory,
but look, these conversations
that happen before people see the film,
they're always irrelevant
because no one having them knows what the film is actually about.
But I remember, I think it's about the Odyssey, mate.
Partially.
Yeah.
Pull your head in, mate.
I don't know what it's about.
The freaking Odyssey, mate.
So I spent 10 years of my life dealing with Batman,
and when I came on a Batman McGins writers and artists,
I've been working on that beloved character for almost 65 years,
and a lot of freighted thoughts were out there about what he represents.
And what I learned over the time on that trilogy is you can't worry about all of that.
What you can do is honor the original text by interpreting it
in the strongest ways you possibly can.
All you can do is knuckle down and make a good Batman movie
and an excellent Batman movie and then an okay third Batman movie.
That's right.
And then you've done it.
Then you can do whatever you want for the rest of your life apparently.
Yeah.
Again, this is tracking, well, this is tracking higher than Oppenheimer,
which had an 80 to 100 US, sorry.
This has, according to deadline, an 80 to 100 US opening,
which would be higher than Oppenheimer,
but other people are saying that it's going to be,
it's going to exceed 100 million.
I don't know what the case is, but...
I know what the case is, but I'm not telling.
Can you tell us next week, where the hard numbers are in?
Yep.
Okay, good.
I could.
We both.
I can and I could.
We both try, well, I did at least, because we talked about it before the show, which I know we shouldn't.
It's that walk from the runway.
It's too long.
You know, you start in silence and you're like, I've got to say something.
What's going on with you?
Yeah.
But I couldn't get an IMAX ticket.
A good one.
A good one, I should say.
There's like three up the front on the right facing the wrong direction.
Awful.
That's right.
I'm trying to find it.
And a guy slaps you in the head every time.
Every couple of minutes he's like, and you pay extra for it too.
Yeah, that's right.
Yeah.
5D.
Yeah.
So I guess I'll see it as a bigger screen as I possibly can.
Yeah.
But at the shopping center.
Yes, that's right.
Also, the 600K dislikes.
Yes.
And John Campi actually did a video on this early this week.
It's an estimate.
And often the case they're overestimated.
And I check this with my YouTube channel.
Okay.
Dislikes on YouTube.
private.
Okay, yeah.
Which I don't particularly like.
Unless you have some sort of extension, like a browser extension.
Yes.
Yeah.
Which all these little freaks have apparently because they can see how many.
But the thing about the browser extensions are they're not based on, they don't have the hard data.
And they admit that.
They say this is an estimate based on a particular formula that we have.
They don't have access to that information.
Oh.
So they don't actually know.
So look, could this have 600,000 dislikes potentially?
Right.
But again, often.
and I know it is with mine,
it's always,
they always overestimate.
So, again,
I'm not saying there aren't people
who are crying about this movie.
For sure.
Because there are,
and I'm not even saying,
frothing and crying.
It might not even be good.
Yeah.
Like,
I don't know.
There's movies of his that I don't like as much.
But we're going to wait and see
by,
and watch the movie.
But again,
it's this thing of like,
if all,
there's a,
there's a whole industry of people
and they're right,
their whole business model
is get people mad about stuff.
So they click and they watch.
And if they will,
like, well, we'll see if it's any good when it comes out.
Like, then they're missing multiple weeks and months of videos where they're like,
you should be mad about this because of this reason.
And it's like, you know, they've got to get those clicks.
That's right.
So they can do those Coca-Cola sponsorship.
We looked at gods of Egypt this week for Carrivanda Garbage.
That's great.
In the spirit of Christopher Nolan because he likes that movie.
He likes a big man in a movie.
He likes a big man in a movie.
Big tall man.
And that's just a, you know, that's just a white movie, which we talk about.
And honestly, like, as we talk about, yeah, it's like, you know,
accurate, but who cares?
Yeah, because it's a nothing movie for it.
Also, apparently Odysseus is black.
Okay, there you go.
All right.
But now I'm mad about that, maybe.
But you should be.
Let's make a video about it.
Let's clip this.
This is just this part.
Let's clip this part.
And we're mad about it.
We're mad about it.
Yeah.
I just, I'm mad about it.
It's a fiction.
I'm mad about you.
That's my polarizer impression.
Oh, that's good.
Why are you mad about me, Paul Ryzer?
Because you cheated on me, Helen Hunt.
In the show?
I'm Helen Hunt.
Yep.
All right.
That happened in that show?
I think so.
Incredible.
Yeah,
one of the seasons show.
In the last,
the finale.
I don't know, man.
And he's just like,
and then it ends.
That's why I'm mad about you.
Yeah.
Yeah.
That was the whole show was the lead up to that, yeah.
So there you go.
I don't know.
Also.
And then the credits end and he goes,
oh,
wait, sorry, I meant mad at you.
Oops.
Oops.
Oops, yeah.
Nine years for nothing or whatever it was.
Anyway, I don't know.
All that is to say that, like, I don't care about fictional.
It would be wild.
Fake movie universe where gods are real and people turn into pigs.
I don't care what color anybody is or what they talk like.
Yeah.
Yeah, it's, uh.
But, you know, you're allowed to, I don't care.
It'd be weird if it was bad, like, just straight up a bad movie for Christopher Nolan.
I would love it in a way.
I would rather it be really bad than okay.
I would love it if there's a moment where Matt Damon goes, oh, no, it's the big men of Greece.
And then the big men shop
That's right
Where we are
Here we are
Bigger than you thought I bet
Yes actually
I thought it was like a
Like a legend or a metaphor
But you're literally big
That's right
And you're in for a big man walloping
I would like to opt out of the big man walloping
Well you can't
What?
No
My mum said you can't
Walloping all around
Oh wait
Who's your mum?
Someone famous
Does she know my mum
Yeah they're friends
they hang out, they played bridge.
Oh, you can go.
You can beat up my men, though.
Okay, I will.
I'm Odyssey.
That's his name, right?
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Rod Odyssey.
Which is short for Roderick Odyssey.
Not Roderis Odyssey.
Might be.
Yeah, cool.
That's his brother.
Yeah, also, bearing in mind, this is R-rated.
Nice.
So that might hurt it for opening.
It doesn't seem like it's going to.
I rated in Australia?
Everywhere, I think.
Whoa.
Because it's different.
Maybe it's M-15.
I bet it's M-A-15 plus.
Yeah.
Whatever Deadpool is, I don't know what that is.
Oh.
Yeah.
So.
X for rudeness.
Yeah.
And it will all depend on how well it does it if it's good.
Anyway, like two years ago.
Yes.
We spoke about the rumors of Christopher Nolan's next movie, which was this.
Oh, yes.
Being a Blue Thunder remake.
Well, I mean, we didn't, we didn't start this.
We didn't start the rumor, just to be clear.
Although it would have been really funny if we did.
But, uh,
So Blue Thunder was an 80s movie with Roy Shida.
Correct, yes.
About a, who has a technologically advanced stealth helicopter.
That's correct, yes.
And I think it became a TV series afterwards as well.
But yeah.
And so people were like, people, when all of us, everybody was like, came in in 1983.
Why is he doing a Blue Thunder?
Well, I think everybody was sort of twisting themselves into knots, including us, to be like,
well, it's about surveillance, isn't it?
That movie's about surveillance.
and etc.
Roy Shider, Malcolm McDowell, Daniel Stern.
Incredible.
Candy Clark and Warren Oates.
All right.
It depicts a Los Angeles police officer,
Shider, who discovers a conspiracy
to dominate the city with an advanced military helicopter
written by Dan O'Bannon.
Wow.
He's a guy recognized for reasons.
And then there was a TV show with Dana Carby.
He wrote the screenplay for Alien.
Oh.
Yeah, Dania Carby TV show, apparently.
Oh, that's right.
In that era where they were like,
we do with Dana Carvey?
Turns out, they still don't know.
They're still figuring it out.
They're still figuring it out.
I like Dana Carvey, but they still don't know.
Now, does Christopher Nolan have anything to say about Blue Thunder?
He said he was bewildered when he read it.
I was bewildered.
I have absolutely no idea where it came from.
Sorry, hang on.
I was bewildered.
I absolutely no idea where it came from.
And besides, I was always more of an Airwills fan.
Nice.
He's got a sense of humor.
She's a funny.
He doesn't have a sense of humor, but he does.
People think he's a poshious.
Toff in a scarf was all, ugh.
But he's a funny guy.
He just likes movies and his family, I think.
Yeah.
And not having a phone.
Yeah.
And his kids are always roasting him, I think.
Are they?
I think so, yeah.
Like, I just admire, and maybe it's not true, but how he shuts up and he's just
not online.
Yeah.
And he just does, just things that he likes.
He has, you know, he has famously said he doesn't have a, you know, he doesn't have a
cell phone.
He doesn't have all that.
I'm sure all his assistants.
Yeah.
I would, I'm sure all his assistants have cell phone.
Yeah, for sure.
But the layer would be, oh, can you send a text to this person?
Oh, can you check the whatever?
Yeah.
So there isn't, you know, he's not about to go to sleep looking at his phone,
which most people are where he'd be like, oh, you know,
and a lot of people are compelled to be like,
they said something that's wrong and I have to correct them kind of thing.
Like you really, and I also imagine that it is good for people not bothering him.
Like people, money people and producers who don't have, you know,
don't have creative control of the movie.
or whatever, like, because I imagine what happens a lot of the time in modern Hollywood
is a producer, it'll be like, they'll have a stupid idea from a change they need to make
to one of the directors' movies and they'll just text them or whatever.
But with Nolan, you have to make a meeting with him.
And he can also just pretend he didn't get it.
Yeah, absolutely.
Oh, oh, my assistant didn't get him to me.
My, you're fired.
You're fired.
Ah!
Yeah.
Okay.
Yeah. You know, so you have the, so I imagine a lot of the reason he has creative freedom is because they're like, okay, do I have to, a producer be like, I have to set a meeting with Christopher Nolan and say to his face, hey, can you make this not about Odysseus or whatever?
Can you make Tom Holland the main character, for example?
And he'd be like, nah. Unless he already is.
No, mate. No, mate, pull your head in.
Pull your head in on Christopher Nolan.
God, he also, he came up in an era where he wouldn't have, he didn't have a cell phone.
Yeah, he would have, yeah.
when he started.
And also,
I'd imagine when they go to contact him
about changing something,
they'd just be like,
oh, wait,
did he direct the Dark Night trilogy?
Yeah.
Oh,
did his last movie make a billion dollars nearly?
No,
I guess we can't really.
Yeah.
You know?
Yeah.
I mean,
all those...
But how quickly we forget, you know?
Totally.
I mean, if there's bombs,
yeah,
that's what happens.
Anyway,
he also spoke about,
this is all to the telegraph
about Christopher,
no, sorry,
Tarantino's...
Can you imagine a daily telegraph?
He could.
Yeah,
yeah.
Tarantino's 10,
film rule.
Oh, that's right.
He said, I think it's dangerous to look at that specifically.
I mean, Quentin has other reasons and I respect that enormously, but I'm hoping you
won't stay true to them.
So I respect your principles, but I hope you fold.
Yeah, you're an idiot.
Yeah, you idiot.
You stupid idiot.
I think also, he said, I'm just picturing a lot of industry parties where just
Christopher Nolan is standing politely and just Tarantino is just chewing his ear off, just like,
he's rabid and he's just talking about how.
how he can't make that 10th movie.
It's a lot of pressure to make your final movie.
Yeah, yeah.
You know?
Yeah.
It's like,
this is a lot of pressure.
This is our final podcast.
But then luckily...
Do you feel that pressure?
Yeah, absolutely.
We're just ending it here.
Okay.
Bye everyone.
I guess you'll never know what we think about Evil Dead Burn.
It's all right.
There you go.
Sorry,
go on.
No,
I'm just imagining that scenario.
Yeah.
But then Christopher Walker walks in,
as he does.
Nolan just switches him out.
And hopes Tarantino doesn't notice.
He probably wouldn't.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Christopher Nolan said also that he treats every one of his movies like it is his last movie.
Like he puts everything into it.
We'll put it all on the table.
Which makes sense to me, I guess.
But, you know, I don't know anything.
I'm not Christopher Nolan or Quentin Tarantino.
But you're in their colons.
Yes.
I think that's important.
That was Nolan's colon for this week.
There it is.
Come back next week, we'll review his film.
Now let's get out of Nolan's colon.
I can't do the thing where you...
You know, there we go.
What'd you think of that?
That's good stuff.
Didn't even know I could do that.
There it is.
That's good.
Should we review Evil Dead Burn?
Yes.
Evil Dead Grubby, rude family.
Grubby and rude.
Some of them are on fire.
Mostly on fire.
At some point, we're all on fire, I think.
Spoiler alert for Evil Dead Burn.
But it's in the title, you know?
That is true.
So this apparently had a budget of, I think it was $20 million?
$20?
$20?
I'd stretch that out.
Which is fairly reasonable, I think.
They're reasonably budgeted movie.
Doesn't need to do that well for make money.
Movie.
It looks like the US opening is going to be about 15 million,
which is down from Evil Dead Rise,
which made $25 million in its opening.
Interesting.
But this is, if this kind of just, you know, chugs along.
Chugs along.
It'll be fine.
Chugs along.
So, yeah.
So, again, not as strong as the last one in terms of opening.
Yes.
But it is, there is like still a momentum to the Evil Dead franchise.
And this is part of the new series of films
Which started in 2013
So that includes 2013
Yeah, I believe so, yeah
But they're also maybe in the same continuity
As the original ones
I think they are
Because Bruce Campbell's in that 2013 one
And he's in the, he's a voice in the Eagle Dead Rise
That's true
And he's sort of in this
But it might just be unrelated
Yeah, okay, yeah, I thought it was, yeah
Okay, yeah
That's great
But what do you think the story was
And is it about intergenerational trauma again?
Boy, it's about
trauma. It's about generational
trauma. How many people are on fire?
Everybody's on fire. It's about abuse.
It's about families
not getting along. And I'm not just talking about
Moana.
About the argument at the dinner table.
I'm not just talking about Moana.
Is that happening my water? They all do
get lit on fire in Malada. That's what I thought.
Which is weird because they're surrounded by water.
It's one of the better changes. They fight a fireboats
are in Moana. I don't know if you remember
Mason? Not really, no. No, I don't.
Yeah. All right.
So this story is weirdly complicated for...
Oh, an Evil Dead movie.
For an evil.
But yeah, just a pretty simple horror movie.
Okay, so there's two brothers, and they are brothers.
And they both suck, but one sucks more than the other.
And they've both got girlfriends or wives or whatever.
And one set of man and wife, they own a restaurant together.
And she's French.
She's French.
Because this, of course, is director...
Mr. France.
Mr. France.
What is his name?
French Pitbull.
Sebastian Vanichick, and he released the French horror film in 2023, infested.
Oh.
So then he gets, yeah, so which is probably quite good, I haven't seen.
Anyway, sorry, go on.
But anyway, so then, but then they all, their relationship is bad.
It sucks.
He sucks.
Yep.
And he's always been like, here, have a big present.
I'm rich.
But then he, they get into argument and he drives off and he gets in his car.
And wouldn't you know it?
He hits an evil dead.
He doesn't even know he's in an evil dead.
Dead movie until it is upon him.
Dan, it's too late.
Yeah.
Once you're, if you don't know early doors, you're in an Evil Dead movie, you're a lot of trouble.
Absolutely.
If you go into it knowing, like, for example, if you're ash from Evil Dead, you're probably
going to be right.
Straight up, he knows.
I mean, you're going to get into some hijinks.
You might have to drink some boiling water or whatever.
You might do a time travel or whatever.
You might do a time travel, but you'll be fine.
You might lose one of your arms.
Whatever.
It's more of a hand.
It's more of a hand, isn't it?
Exactly.
Keep the elbow.
Yeah.
It's important.
But anyway, he gets a new accident.
The car accident on evil dead, and he evil dies because he is himself evil.
Yeah.
And then the family's got to deal with that.
And you know what that means?
Evil dead in a house.
That's right.
Evil dead in an old house.
Don't get into an old house if you're in an evil dead movie.
It's funny how the dad is like, you should have upkept this old house.
I'll stop you there.
Evil dad.
Yeah, thank you.
Evil dead burned.
Evil dad burned.
To go to that house and be like, oh, this house has gone it to ruin.
You should have fixed this.
This is fucked.
This is fucked.
This is not fixed.
What are you talking about?
Just knock it down.
It's got the
It's got foundational mold in it
If you took the mold out
It would collapse
What are you thinking?
This house sucks
And it's about intergenerational trauma
Absolutely it is, yeah
God
What do you think of this movie?
It's okay
I think it's pretty good
I think it lacks some of the things
That the previous one had
I'll tell you this
I'll tell you this for nothing
If you're not in the mood for this movie
Oh you're gonna have the worst time you're life
I reckon I was on the cusp
I saw it at the at the
very horror friendly time of 11.15 a.m. on Friday.
And I'm like, I don't know if I'm...
I couldn't get a screening that early.
I didn't get a afternoon to it.
Yeah, I had to go into the city.
Yeah.
I had to go into Crown Casino.
Oh, yeah.
Exactly. That's right.
Oh, that's awful. What an awful place.
Yeah, pretty bad.
Fuck.
We're sponsored by Crown Casino, by the way.
That's right.
What an awful place.
That's their new slogan.
But, yeah, I think I was right on the cusp just because it was so early.
Yeah.
I also had to walk through a Pokemon go.
event. Oh my God,
Casino. Why? I'm like, no, everyone's
having a nice time. I think that was good. But I'm just like
this is not the environment for
a terrible horror movie about generational
trauma. But I
still had a good time, I think. Yeah,
again, I agree. I think there's... Like
the most recent ones,
it's got a real mean streak to it. If you're not
in the mood for a horror movie with a mean streak
where horrible things happen to everybody
you're not...
But I'll tell you this conversely, James.
If you're in the mood for a movie where the
camera lingers meaningfully on an object and then shortly thereafter the object is is pivotal to
an action sequence happening like a pen or whatever like a pen or a or a or a knife or a or a
fish hook or a or a or an evil dead guy evil dead or a wooden leg or whatever yeah you are
going to be you are you are you are going to be happy as larry james because it happens i would
estimate every four to five minutes in this movie for the entire runtime check off's just different
objects if you haven't if you haven't seen the movie yet go into it being like what's
Is this going to happen every four to five minutes?
And you'll be like, it is.
It is going to happen.
I'm in the mood for this.
It's happening.
Yeah, it's good, yeah.
I think it lacks, there's like a fun and wackiness.
Mm-hmm.
To some and not all of the evil dead movies.
A springiness to it.
A mean springiness.
And there's always in evil dead movies.
Also, I should point out, I have not seen the first three in their entirety,
which is at this point criminal.
I've seen all the new ones.
Like, and I love the 2013 one, and I quite like the last one.
I got it.
I have to do that.
Yeah.
And then I have to watch the show.
Yeah.
It's ridiculous.
I mean, for, I'm sure everybody knows, but Evil Dead is sort of the, the, um, the debut of Sam Ramey.
Yeah.
The first one's so low budget.
Super low budget.
It was the obsession of its time.
It absolutely was.
And it was kind of, it, you know, it pioneered a bunch of running a camera through.
Yeah.
Stuff that is now you can do with a drone or, or just.
Just a steady camera.
Just a steady camera, I guess.
A steady hand.
Yeah.
And, and, and the second one is sort of a remake.
of the first one.
It's a continuation,
but it's also basically a remake,
but it's funny.
And then the third one is the wacky time travel one.
Yeah.
Then it rested for a bit.
Then it rested for a bit.
Then there was,
then they have,
everything must be inevitably rebooted.
And there's Ash versus Evil Dead.
It's a TV show.
And there was a video game in there somewhere.
And there was a video game as well.
And he pops up in other Freddie versus whatever things.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
The video games.
I think there was going to be in Ash versus Freddie versus whatever movie at one point.
But, yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So, but there's always a turning point.
Right.
And there's always a.
satisfaction in somebody kind of getting the upper hand and figuring it out.
And this of course.
Getting the chains all hand.
Thank you.
And this does have that.
But, and maybe it's because the way that they do it and what they're up against.
Yeah.
I don't feel it is as satisfying as the, at least the previous to.
Interesting.
And there's also kind of a fun, like they're awful and they're nasty.
The dead ice.
Yes.
And the movies.
But there's not, there's that here, but there's kind of not the wackiness.
Less so, yeah.
Okay.
Yeah.
But that being said, I think there's really great performances in this.
Like there's two main deadites that happen early on and maybe some others.
One's a dad-o-ed.
Evil dad.
Evil dad.
Errol Shand is great.
And there's another one.
I would say a cast of, to me at least, completely unnoticed.
Some New Zealand people.
Ah, because it was filmed in New Zealand, yeah.
Yeah, it makes sense.
And Lucienne Buchanan plays another one who's in the trailer and she gets the car headrest through her face.
Sure.
Okay.
And those two were like phenomenal.
They're so good in this.
Also, you go a lot of this movie,
you go through a lot of this movie
wondering who the main character is.
It will emerge eventually who the main character is.
You think it's maybe something and it's different.
Yes.
Yeah, absolutely.
Guy in who's got kind of an Anton Yelchen vibe, I thought.
He does have an Anton Yelchin vibe.
Absolutely, yeah.
I also think there's some really good,
like a lot of, like all the Evil Dead movies,
the camera work.
There's a shot, there's a sequence,
there's an action.
thing was in a car, which is very good.
There's a mirror shot, which is like spectacular.
There's a oneer in a kitchen which was like one of the trailers.
Yeah, right.
And there's a spinning room moment where someone like crawls up a wall.
Yeah, as they ought to do.
While they drag someone.
I also, you know what I felt about this movie?
And maybe the previous couple have this as well.
But I just don't remember it because it's been a while since I've seen them.
But it did kind of feel like they have a checklist or they have a white.
board somewhere that is a list of all the traumas you can do to a person that you can do to a person
that would make you see that and go ooh and they just go tick tick tick tick tick tick and like I think
at one point they've they've clearly gone we have done stab someone in the eye a lot of times yeah
what about stab someone in the ear we haven't done that absolutely about a big stab in the ear yeah you
know if there's there's like hand trauma and oh there's a hand stepping bit yeah early on which is like
Oh yeah you know
What if some guy got boiled
Whatever I also think
See how you feel like this
I feel like the writer of this
Who was also the director and someone else
I feel like they they watched
Or they played Resident Evil 7 quite recently
Yeah
Because there's there's a
Well we'll talk about in spoilers
But there's a bunch of stuff in that
That I think is just in this
Straight from this
Yeah
But maybe that's just horror tropes
You know modern horror tropes
You've got to put them all in I guess
Yeah absolutely
But yeah, speaking of that gory stuff, so yeah, there's the hand that car, there's a car head rest moment.
There's like a, there's somebody rests their head and it's nice.
There's an ear moment.
There's a moment with a gun.
Yeah.
Which is like quite, that's the resonant of all seven thing.
Oh, okay, right.
Yeah, okay, that makes sense.
Well, talk about that spoiled.
But I mean, people, if you've seen both, you know what I'm talking about.
Yeah.
It also, the start of it, it's almost like an, almost entirely, but not entirely unconnected sequence, which connects to the 2013.
And Evil Dead Rise.
Yeah, like the lake thing.
Is that, and again, maybe this is one of those things that is so obvious to everybody else if you're a fan of the franchise or even if you pay attention to movies generally.
Are the Deadites, is their original ways of the water?
Oh, okay.
Yeah, I don't know about that.
Because normally you say the words and...
Yeah, but is that where they reside kind of thing.
Oh, okay, yeah.
I don't know about that.
Because that happens in burn, it happens in this and it happens in Rise and like you said, it happens in...
I don't remember, to be honest.
Yeah, I don't.
I don't know.
I guess everybody's all sort of near water.
Yeah.
It's maybe water swamp, you know, whatever.
But like the reason all this is happening is because this family has a,
they have an origin, I guess, they have a family member who was looking into all of this stuff.
Yeah.
And that's basically what, I'm just having a bit of a look at it.
Why they're targeted.
Yeah.
And which also, because it's their grandfather basically.
And I'm like, and there's also a picture of ash.
Yeah.
On the wall.
And I'm like, oh, is this an ash?
Is their grandfather supposed to be ash?
but I don't think that's the case in this.
I also think because you see a photo of the man in the in the book and I'm like,
is that Bruce Campbell?
The man in the book.
Oh, right.
Yeah, that's what I mean.
Yeah,
I didn't get a good look at it.
I don't know.
It had,
it had Bruce Campbell's kind of like a wide set look.
Yeah.
You know,
he's got the broad shoulders.
I mean,
it would line up like age wise.
Yeah.
I don't know because I'm not sure is Ash ever like supposed to have family.
Family and that.
I don't know.
you'd know more about this than I would.
Does he in Ash versus Evil Dead?
Probably.
But also like, I thought maybe it was just a, you know, also because in the previous Evil Dead movie,
it's established that Bruce Campbell is trapped back in the past.
Or was at some point.
Yeah, so maybe this is him.
I thought maybe it's him under an assumed identity.
Yeah.
Like maybe in the 40s or whatever and he has some kids.
Apparently the grandfather I just looked up is not.
It's a guy named Benjamin Price.
So it's not Ash.
But I feel, because he's in some secret sect of people who are researching the deadites and what's going on.
But I feel like Bruce Campbell.
Conclusion, we don't know what's going on.
We don't know.
We don't know.
There's no rhyme or reason.
No.
We think if they scratch you or you get their goop on you, you turn into a deadite, but it's not 100% clear.
Well, that's the thing as well.
So the infection, like, it's a fluid transmission or a scratch.
Yeah.
And then you'll get infected by a deadite.
But there's also different levels of deadites.
There's like a hierarchy, right?
Also, is it one guy or is it like?
Well, they're a hive mine.
Yeah, it seems that way.
But I don't know.
I feel like they're separate, right?
Or they take on the traits of the purse, some of the traits of the person.
But all their memories are only some of their memories because they're looking for something.
Yeah.
So you'd think if they just got some of the family members' memories, they'd be like, oh, I've got my family member memories.
Oh, it's under the couch.
Yeah.
But sometimes they'll, you know, have some of their brain missing and whatever.
Oh, that's probably true.
That's probably a factor.
But no, I think there is some getting infected stuff, which is just glossed over.
Some people will just get, like, blood shot directly into their mouth and not be infected.
Yes.
I don't know.
It seems like it's a bit faster.
I think also maybe.
maybe they're going too law heavy with this at this point.
You think so?
Maybe you don't need to tie everything in to this shared connected universe.
But maybe that's the,
maybe that is the selling point of this.
It's like this one is,
we don't know,
like if we do it more kind of generic,
maybe we don't get the obsession level of crowd,
but if we go specific,
we know we'll get,
though the evil dead fans.
Maybe there's a way to do it where,
but it doesn't rely heavily on knowing stuff previously.
Yeah, I don't think you have to know anything about this really.
Yeah, fair enough.
You're probably right.
Yeah.
Yeah.
But there were moments in this that had me going,
oh, is that supposed to connect to something I'm supposed to know about or whatever?
And maybe not.
Maybe not as much.
Yeah.
But I liked it.
I liked it too.
I didn't love it.
Again, I think the last two were better, but I should, I'm going to go back on what the original.
In the previous one, Evil Dead Rise, were the Deadites after anything specifically,
or were they just like?
We're just a mumming and a partner.
Yeah, we're just mumming around.
Yeah.
Just being a menace.
Oh, doesn't it also break like the universe?
in the post credits we'll talk about that and spoilers probably does yeah but like which again that
speaks to like why you're making this an interconnected right that was the bit that i'm talking okay right
yeah but in the in the previous one were they just like yeah we're we're doing dead-eyed stuff
yeah we're in here yeah we're gonna we're gonna terrorize now we're having we're running around
sure yeah yeah yeah best movie ever i think best movie ever yeah good time good time of the movies
i reckon if you're you know bad time of the movies also if you're in them if you're in that movie
yeah yeah you're most you're most yeah you're most
having a bad time, I think.
Let's do spoilers.
Let's do some spoilers.
So everyone except French.
Alice.
Yeah.
When the credits rolled up, it's like, this, it's Ted or whatever.
And I'm like, I don't know who any of these people are.
When what?
Then when the credits rolled with the character names, I'm like, I don't know who any of
those actors or characters names.
I didn't catch any of their names.
Maybe Phil is the bad husband?
Maybe.
Yeah.
Evil dad.
No, the young evil dad.
Oh, evil dad.
Evil son.
Evil son.
Yeah.
Also, the ending.
ends with the bad husband
who was, turns out was abusive
even before he became an evil dead.
Yes. He turns back up
as a Terminator fiery corpse.
Yes. And I just think for an
evil dead movie, it's a step too
far in terms of, because it's a lot,
not always, because there's a lot of like
visual effects in these.
But it's a, it's a CGI
Terminator fireman.
Right, yeah. As opposed to like
a physical threat.
I think that maybe, and I understand trying something
different.
Yeah.
But Evil Dead kind of, I don't know, for me, again, having not seen the first three fully.
Maybe the real Ed Evil Dead fanatics life finally a weird CGIT 1000 guy.
It felt a bit, Terminated Genesis kind of thing to me.
Yeah, right.
And that's why I think the, you know, because there's always a turn the tables moment.
Mm-hmm.
Moment.
And it didn't feel as.
I genuinely thought this would be the one where Bruce Campbell came back.
Well, he's sick now.
And apparently he, because he pitched on this as well.
Yeah.
And he's an executive producer.
Yeah.
And he realized that like,
I'll know,
this is not,
this franchise is kind of bad at my hands at this point.
Yeah,
right now.
Which is a shame.
And if he's,
you know,
because he's apparently,
well,
he's quite sick.
Oh.
Then I can also understand why he wouldn't.
Which is a shame because I think,
I mean,
Ash turning back up in these at this point.
That would be crazy.
Really fun.
Yeah.
Well,
we wish him the best.
Yeah.
If he's listening,
he's not.
Yeah.
But if someone who knows him is listening.
But also like,
tell him we said,
get well.
Yeah.
But also like, Evil Dead 3 is time travel.
So I guess you can put a CGI guide and whatever.
Oh yeah, so the dad shoots himself in the head.
Yeah.
That was because there's a bit in Resident Evil 7.
Yeah.
Gross family.
Gross family.
Where you're fighting the evil dad.
And he just shoots himself on the head to be like, I'll be back later.
This doesn't affect me at all.
And I think that was interesting.
Yeah.
Also, as you were talking about how the idea of like some of us is a little inconsistent,
I feel like shooting somebody in the head in the head
in the Evil Dead universe is pretty
definitively.
But I guess the idea is like, here's this, this,
you know, to prove that this is a little more
difficult for the protagonist to get through kind of thing.
But I guess if you completely destroy...
Evil dog.
Yeah, I guess if you cut the head off, that'll...
Yeah, that'll do it.
I mean, they'll yell at you, but that's the extent of it.
Little twist in the end there.
She doesn't use the chainsaw to kill anyone.
Whatever it is.
Whipers...
Look, as long as they're cutting...
As long as they can't, then they're chopping.
So apparently they are clear,
their collective consciousness,
and they're controlled by a kandarian demon.
And they share memories and knowledge.
So, I don't know.
So it's one-ish guy sort of.
One-ish guy, sort of, sure.
Which is why they don't care if they get, like, mashed up and chewed up
and all of that, I guess.
Yes.
Also, the grandma turns in this, turns into an evil dead.
Correct, yes.
And that's in the post credits.
Evil grand.
But so, the very, very...
Evil grand crawl.
Yes.
Yeah.
The very, very end of this.
is the return of the evil dead mum from the last one.
Correct, yes.
Who got beheaded and then got her head kicked into a wood chipper.
That's correct, yes.
But then her body got cremated, evidently, yes.
Yeah.
So.
Also, it ends with a kid being killed.
The kid gets neck snapped by...
Yeah.
Them.
Sure, okay, yes.
So people are saying, like, well, how is this?
This is not a thing that we've seen before.
like a specific character.
Yeah, and she's not a spirit.
She's back.
Yeah.
How was she back?
Is it because the kid?
Maybe it is a spirit because she's in the mirror and whatever.
Well, she did kill that child.
And then with her hands.
Yeah.
And that was a great character, but I don't know why that one, why is that the one you pick
specifically as the one to return?
Well, I know people like, yeah, people, you know, liked it enough.
But I don't know.
It just seemed a strange choice that again tried to make this whole thing interconnected and
whatever.
And also obviously they're going to have to, they, I would bet a lot of money that they didn't, they haven't thought this.
I think that's exactly what it is.
There's no way they've gone, well, the mechanics of this are this.
They've just gone, we'll figure it out later.
She's back and we'll figure it at how that happened later.
Yeah, absolutely.
Yeah.
Movies.
Movies, hey?
I got to watch the other ones.
Yeah, medium to small budgeted movies.
It look pretty good and they're set in a gross house movies.
Yeah.
Gross house.
Happy with it?
Yeah.
Yeah.
I would see these more.
Me too, yeah.
There's also, there is a difference between these and like hostile and sore to me.
Those, and this one was again less of that, but those are just to me just just just awful and nasty in a way that I don't enjoy.
Whereas these.
Well, so there you go.
I think you have to give, yeah, you have to give these movies credit for not being, because I don't like those kind of hostile type movies either.
Because everybody's awful in them and you don't care what happens to anybody.
There's no real, there's no.
And I guess the difference is because an evil dead has the classic trope of the final.
final girl where somebody has to, you know, experience the terror and then kick somebody into a woodchipper,
exactly.
So, like, but those I don't think really do.
There might be someone who sort of survived till the end, but then they're like, well, actually,
we're putting a drill through your head or whatever.
Oh, there is one thing in this.
There is a knife that can return somebody back to normal, but also kill them, I guess,
at the same time.
Correct, yes.
So it will undead-eyed somebody, which is not something.
There's never been a way to do that.
Yeah, apparently not.
In previous movies.
So I guess that's, and I liked also that a while.
wasn't a fancy knife. It's like the grail.
The Holy Grail, yeah.
The Holy Grail, where it's just like, it's just a wooden knife with like twine.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. That was a funny bit where she...
Yeah, it's trying different knives.
Trying different knives. Yeah. Yeah.
Any other thoughts on this? Pretty good. I thought either, you know, good fun.
Yeah. Again, I hope it does well enough the way we can get another one of these in a few years.
But it would probably do slightly not as good and then they'll reboot it again.
Yeah, I'll reboot it again. Who owns the Evil Dead franchise? Is it me?
Oh, my way. Have a, have a lot.
I just looked at my bank account
and I'm down $20 million.
Interesting.
Because you didn't have that money in the first place.
No, that's strange that that would be the case.
And the number is really red on there and big.
So it's new line and screen jams and ghost house,
but it's distributed by Warner Brothers and Sony,
depending where they are in the world.
But it's a new line kind of thing.
Yeah, new line.
Ghost house.
Look through a keyhole and there's a skeleton.
You saw that, I should.
I did.
Yeah, I did.
I did show up earlier.
enough for the title sequence, yes.
Great. Should we move it along? Let's move it along.
I'm talking about my liner. Is that all right?
You can do that. I'm going to do it in this next segment.
Okay, terrific.
I'm doing nothing.
This segment, like all segments, is good.
It is good. It's what we read and what we're going to read.
That's right. What are you reading? I'm going to watch the movie The Furious.
Oh, it must be nice to watch a good movie.
Well, I don't know if it's good yet.
Must be nice to watch a movie that people like it and maybe you'll like it.
people do say that they like it and maybe I will also like it.
So this is, can you explain this movie to me in one word?
Movie.
Am I wrong?
Am I wrong?
I haven't seen it.
Oh well.
I'll tell you all about it.
But it's an action time, isn't it?
Yeah, it's a Hong Kong action film.
Yep.
It's about an ordinary man.
He has to fight a criminal empire to rescue his daughter.
Does he have special skills or he doesn't?
He's probably good at karate or something.
Yeah, all right.
But I don't know.
I've just said it's very, very good.
Yeah.
I hear it's a new leap in terms of...
Jumping around and doing a kick.
Exactly, that's right.
Here's the reception, James.
Critical response.
98% of Rotten Tomatoes is positive.
Yeah.
Relentless blood-soaked spectacle
of breathtaking, inventive martial arts choreography.
Okay.
Director Kenji Tanigaki
delivering a brutal ballatic action extravaganza.
You are not going to believe
the movie that he worked on
and he did the action choreography,
sun-coordinating or whatever.
I'll tell you about it in one word.
Movie.
It was movie.
And he also was a second unit director on the snake eyes,
GI Joe's Orange movie.
Oh, no.
We haven't seen that.
Maybe that's another movie.
Maybe that's a good movie.
Well, watch next way.
Watch it next way.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I'm also going to watch Hocom, which again.
Hocom's supposed to be amazing.
Right?
Yeah.
We, uh, that came out in a week when there was other big movie, I think, to watch.
Big movie.
Exactly.
Yeah, we should watch Hocom.
I think it's on all sorts of streamings now, isn't it at the moment?
Correct, yes.
Yeah, okay.
Correct, yes.
Correct, yes.
So what do they mean?
I'm also midway through Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
Oh yeah, we're watching that for big work.
For big work?
That's right.
Hell of a movie, that one.
Yeah, I've already finished it and written all my notes.
We're supposed to record it today, but you couldn't do it.
Correct, I didn't want to.
You were scared.
I wanted to savor the movie.
Because I watch, I'm like, I could probably skim through this.
And then I watch the first five minutes.
I'm like, no, this is a good movie.
Yeah.
That I haven't seen since I was a child.
Yeah.
And I didn't get any of the subtext or any of the real text.
It's so modern.
Yeah.
In many ways.
Yeah.
What an era of movie making.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Okay, cool.
Well, you can watch that.
That sounds good, but you're going to watch a furious movie.
Thank you.
Which you described as movie.
I definitely did deny it.
And once again, I'm not wrong.
I don't disagree with you, Mason.
Well, I watched the $250 million remake before marketing and distribution of the movie Moana.
Oh, that's right.
It comes hot off the heels of the sequel that was last year, but also the original,
which was 10 years ago.
which is a beloved film and or franchise
even though the second one isn't very good
because it was a TV show, they split up.
Correct.
So they're doing this.
So also, this is opening really badly.
Right, interesting.
Right, interesting.
Because generally the live action remakes
of Disney animated stuff does really well.
Generally, but not always like,
what was the one?
Snow White didn't do well.
Yeah, that's what's boring, that's why.
Yeah, but Lilo and Stitt.
Because her name's Snow White,
but she doesn't have snow powers, does she?
That's true.
That's frozen.
That movie also sucks.
Are they going to do a live?
action version of Frozen?
Maybe not now.
They're doing Tangled at the moment.
Oh, Tangled. Who's Tangled?
John Tangled.
John Tangled. They got an actor named John Tangled.
No, they changed his name to John Tangled.
His real name is Christopher Walken.
Huh?
Yeah.
I'm at the top of this tower.
Is that tangled?
That's John Tangled.
Wow.
Wow.
Yeah.
Okay.
The mine is opening...
Hell, that was some brave died.
Flip rider.
Is that?
That's the guy.
The main guy played by you.
Zachary Levi.
Flynn Ryder.
Flynn Ryder.
That's probably not his real name.
He changed it because he wants to have a cool...
That's a too modern name for a fairy tale guy.
Modern for 2013 or whatever or 2011 when this movie came out?
Yes.
Okay, you might be right.
So it looks like it's going to open in the US in the 42 to 46 million range.
Ridiculous.
That's low.
Yeah, and look, it's one of those things where maybe it'll just stay in cinemas.
Because I've spoken to other parents who are like, I'm very excited to see live action Moana.
Them personally?
Or them just...
Them, yeah, because they're like...
all their children, but them themselves.
Yeah.
So look, is it pointless?
Yes.
Does it look worse?
Yes.
Is it longer?
Yes.
All of those things.
Can you see the rock's nipples?
Yeah, sometimes I couldn't.
And I was like, does he not have nipples?
But he does have nipples.
They're just titoed over.
He's also wearing a muscle suit.
They're titoed.
Yes, but you can't really tell about the muscle suit.
It's not the weirdest thing on him.
Is he wearing a wig?
Yeah.
Can you tell that the wig is on?
You can, okay.
A lot of been said, a lot of ads been.
said about the wig. I don't
think the wig is a problem. I genuinely
think... As a man with
consistent wig there, and who's very
critical of wigs. It's a very
good wig. It just
looks strange on him
because he's 55.
So it looks bizarre.
And he's a bad 55.
I wouldn't say that. He's a rough
55? I mean, he's a guy who's
taken a lot of hormone
replacement therapy. He's a man who's lived
in intense 55 years. Absolutely.
And so it's not it's not the wig so much
It's the it's the combination of things
It's also the fact that like he doesn't look
I like Maui
Well see that's the thing as well and again
I haven't watched this one
But I think one of the reasons that Maui is a beloved character
Yeah
Is that the it's the rock's vocal performance
But also the animators have worked really hard
And every nuance of his face
And they make it go you know it's real
You know they make every expression really big
and really interesting and what have you,
but when it's just a normal human man, you know.
I don't even think he does a bad job.
It's just weird.
And it's weird also because he looks to me
because he's famously bald
and has been for like probably 20 years now.
Yeah.
They also tried a concept,
I talked to you about this on the runway,
where a concept art would make...
This is a different runway.
This is the modeling runway.
That's right.
The catwalk.
We should say catwalk.
We should say catwalk,
shouldn't we?
When we were doing our little turn on the catwalk.
That's right.
Where they made him bald.
Yeah, right.
And I understand why they wouldn't do that because there would be outraged.
But he would look more normal.
Yes.
But so that we're going to mind.
Catherine,
who's Jayla guy's daughter.
Jayla guy's daughter is a really good Moana.
And I mean that, like genuinely.
Here's the thing because I think people, you know, people always like, oh,
Nepo baby or whatever.
But it's like you can't, I don't think you can get a role like this if you're not very good.
No.
It wouldn't, it doesn't work that way.
And also that the, but what is distracting about her?
Yes.
So this is her.
This is what she looks like.
This is her hair.
Yep.
So that's not that.
But they give her a flat wig that you can see.
So for me,
that wig is the stranger.
Right.
Because it makes her look more artificial.
Right.
As a character.
Even though, again,
she does like a genuinely good performance.
Yeah,
yeah.
But it's,
it does kind of,
it's a continuity thing,
I'd imagine as well.
That's often why they do wigs.
Because it's,
because the whole thing about these characters
and the original
animation was they wanted to show that culture
and that particular hair type
because you don't see that represented. It was mostly about
wanting to see a hair type. It was. And they built the
rest of the movie around it. Pretty much.
And to kind of just
flatten that out is
strange. It's a very
artificial looking movie
despite being, like the
original one feels more
like real and tangible than this stuff.
Because it is that blend of live action and animation
and creatures and water
and wigs and muscle
And the muscle suit doesn't even look that bad.
Like, really. And I think there's
moments in it. Was he thin
when he was... He might have been thin-ish.
Right. Yeah. Because he was doing a thin.
He was doing a thin one. He was doing a thin one.
That's right. He wasn't on a thick
one. He was on a thin one. Yes.
Yeah. It also spoils...
If you haven't seen him on it, I'm going to spoil
the... I've seen it.
Not to brag, but I've seen it. That the island...
The creature that they fight at the end is actually the island.
Yeah.
It's heart-pulled.
They pretty much just say that at the start.
And they're like, well, and then this happened.
It's like, well, that's kind of a, it's a bigger reveal.
Oh, they just tell.
In the live-action version, they just tell you.
They pretty much just explain, like it kind of unfolds that way.
Maybe they don't say it explicitly, but you see it kind of, you see it happening,
pulls the heart out, then the creature and the rotting earth and whatever.
At the start of the movie.
At the start of the movie.
I wonder if that's because they are concerned, like maybe, you know, you know how
we've talked about this before, but how, like,
when you watch a trailer for a kid's movie
they show you the entire movie in the trailer
because they want to show parents
this is what happens in the movie just in case
it's too scary for your kids or what have you.
They can watch this trailer.
Exactly.
Do you think maybe they're like,
in going from the original Moana
to this Moana, they're like
where it'll be too scary for kids
at the end of this movie
if they are surprised by this thing.
So we have to tell them.
They know that it's the Mother Nature island.
Yeah, right.
Maybe.
I'm sure they focused a bunch of this shit.
Yeah, there we go, yeah.
They also, so they spend a lot of, it takes a really long time to get out of the village.
Okay.
So again, it is longer and a lot of the longer stuff is the start.
And in the, in the actual, the actual, the real movie, the good one.
Oh, yes.
Which is the live action one?
Yes, the live action one.
Okay.
In the 2016 one, there's fun little character moments and like people that you kind of, you don't necessarily meet, but you're like, oh, that's a fun kid, or that's a silly guy and whatever.
You can imagine they had lives and back.
Oh, but in this you see the...
You see that, but they don't really do anything.
But it is longer.
I would say, like, Rina Owen plays the grandmother in this now in live action.
And she's been Wants for Worries, if you haven't seen that.
She plays, what's his name's wife, Jake, Jake Lamass's wife in that.
She's incredible.
Is there a sequel to Wants for Warrows?
There is.
It's called What Becomes the Broken Heart.
There we go, yeah.
And she's incredible.
Like, she's great.
Like, she's...
And so there's moments like that that I really like moments with her and her grandma, certain
songs, like emotional moments.
And also, a bit of her.
watching that, it's like, oh, this is like effective or I like this song or, oh, the crab's fun
because I've seen this.
Yeah.
So I'm just like, oh, this is good because I've seen it before.
Sure.
And I really enjoyed it.
This is an echo of something I saw before.
Yes.
Wow.
So again, I don't even, it's not, it's not terrible and there are effective moments in it.
And my kids, like, really enjoyed it.
My son was like, he was like, I liked it more because Maui does more jokes in it.
He does.
He's a bit more quippy in this one.
He has more to say.
whatever.
And my daughter...
But they're all just jokes from ballers.
Yeah, that's true.
They're making deals and stuff.
And whatever's.
And my daughter liked it because, you know, it's, you know, she likes the song.
And she loved the chicken.
There's like a little hey hey chicken which you really enjoy it.
So, you know, my kids had a great time in it.
So maybe for that reason, it'll do well.
But, uh, and so, you know, and again, like any movie that I watch with my kids and they enjoy,
like that bumps that movie up for me.
Evil Dead Bird?
Yes.
They loved it.
I liked it all.
the sloshing of skin.
They liked how the family was on fire
the whole time. That was good.
Dad, can we be on fire one time as a family?
Maybe one day, son.
Maybe one day.
Dare to dream.
Yeah.
So yeah, I guess congrats on making the second
or third best Moana movie.
Terrific.
Which is brackets derogatory.
Yeah, nice, got them.
Yeah, so I'm not going to say, like,
I liked it more than I like Snow White
and more than the live action,
live action Lion King.
Yeah.
What about the Lion King sequel or pre-thought?
I think that's at least a different story.
Yeah, no, that's true.
I like that one much more than the other one.
What I like about this is that I'm now in the clear
for like two or three years.
Because I'm not, I don't have to, I don't have to.
Because we were talking about it.
Eventually, I'll have to see this for Caravan of Garbage,
but that won't be, we can't do that in the next year or two years.
No, we can't be anything relevant that I need to talk about this.
So I just don't have to watch this.
Maybe when Thriana comes out.
Sriana.
We're going to have to get to those live action.
Oh, hell yeah.
remakes at some point. Hell yeah. But also like I am glad. I am legend. I mean it's that hopefully this has
Disney reassessing everything. What are they doing? Are we going to get a live action toy story? Yeah.
Now? Maybe with Tom Hanks being turned in a weird lanky man. But it would just be a real room and
CGI toys. Awful. Sounds awful. I want to see that now. That sounds yuck. Yeah. I hope it
And what will happen is they'll throw $200 million into it and it'll look yuck and horrifying.
But they've already committed to $200 million.
So they'll put another $200 million into it.
And it'll just, it'll be a nightmare and they'll have to release it.
Yeah.
That's so exciting.
Thank you for putting that vision in my head.
You're very welcome.
Yeah.
But like I'm hoping then we're going to get more of like a hoppers and things like that.
And we are getting tangled and tangle might do better because tangled's more of a distant memory.
Yeah.
Morano is not.
It feels very current.
It feels like it just happened.
Yeah.
Even though it was 10 years ago.
Yeah.
And maybe that's because.
we just got a sequel as well.
Yeah,
probably.
Yeah.
But I don't know.
It's also the thing of like,
is the,
as the rock,
is he done?
Yeah.
Like Arnold had a time,
you know?
Yeah,
and he exists.
Yeah,
and we can see him
and look at him.
Yeah,
we can look at him
anytime we want.
We can watch
that show that he's on,
the Netflix show.
Fubar?
Fubar.
I was trying to think he knew
it was an acronym.
Fubar.
I think that's canceled.
Well,
we can still watch it
until they delete it,
which it will,
you know,
be a year from now,
two years.
Oh, they cancelled Fuba after two seasons, meaning there's no season three.
Wow, that's devastating for the show Fubar and all the work.
I'm devil.
My show was cancelled.
Oh, dear, Mason.
At least I'm in the weapon of choice video.
It's Christopher Walken.
It's my Christopher Walken.
I'm familiar.
Oh, also, I forgot to mention this.
I've mentioned it in the previous volume of this, but I also read The Batman Second Night.
What's this about?
So the Batman First Night,
It was by Dan Juergens, Mike Perkins and Mike Spicer, and it's the...
Knaite with a Knais.
With Knait with a Knais.
And it's the, it's very early Batman stories.
Oh, I remember this, yes.
Like, as in, like, the original Bill Finger slash Bob Kane version.
But, like, with kind of, like, photo-referenced art, like, really kind of photo-realistic art.
I like his Batman hat.
Yeah, and he's got, like, the purple gloves and the whatever.
So it's, like, very early days of 1940s Batman.
And those similar stories, but kind of in...
Oh my God, it's a scarecrow and whatever.
Well, guess what?
In volume two, special, very special guest, first appearance,
Golden Age Superman.
Oh, my God.
And it's the version that I like, which is the one where he's like...
I'm lifting a car.
Yeah, he's, you know, more powerful than a locomotive,
fast than the speeding bullet, leaps tall buildings, can't fly.
And so it's fun.
Like, it's from a power level kind of thing.
Like, he's a, you know, he teams up with Batman to fight crime in Gotham City.
Yeah, he's dropping in.
But, like, you know, he can shrug off, like,
like pistol bullets, but if they're like wailing on him with a Tommy gun, he's like, this sucks,
actually.
It's kind of, you know, so it's...
I don't like this. Shoot Batman, please, instead of me.
But he's got the kind of, you know, the old school, the old school flashes suit.
Is it better than the Moana live action remake?
As far as I know, yes, it is.
And do you think this will affect the rock star power?
I don't think it will affect the star power at all, no.
Okay.
No, I think he's free and clear in terms of my enjoyment of this comic book.
I think that's not going to affect the star power in a negative way.
Or positive.
Yeah, all right.
Maybe he wishes it would.
Maybe he wishes it would.
Okay.
Well, those are two great things you're reading.
Two great things.
A movie you're going to watch.
And a comic book that I had done watched.
And Milano that you will watch.
I guess three or four years, maybe.
Maybe.
When we're more dead than we currently are.
If that's even possible.
I know.
How would you even explain that?
Probably science.
Great.
Or maybe I do it in one of my famous impression voices.
Do you have any impressions?
Do you do a good rogue trooper?
I'm afraid it's terminal.
Is this rogue trooper?
No, that's Christopher Walker.
but he's a doctor and he's announced that we're dead.
I would pick a different doctor.
Yeah.
I don't even think he is a doctor.
I wouldn't think so at all.
Is this in a moot?
It doesn't matter.
Yeah.
I don't need to delve into the law of this.
No, it's not even a thing.
We just try and stuff out.
I agree.
Yeah.
And under the banner of trying stuff out, it doesn't have to work or be funny.
Or be anything.
Thank God.
Or maybe it's not even in the final version.
We don't know.
Maybe it's just me explaining there was a thing and we cut it out.
Okay.
It was a continuous Christopher Walker impression
throughout this whole
episode
and we took it all out
you'll never hear it
oh that's a shame
at least I got to hear it
at least you got to hear it
should we move to the next segment
of the show
yes
yes James
it's good
this one's me
who's me
Mesa
oh yeah
the other ones would
yeah yeah
yeah yeah
anyway
this is a theme
to letters
I'll play it right now
I'm
the classic one was
letters
oh letters
we love you
so let's
I feel like you
keeping space.
I know.
I'm playing at my own pace, brother.
Okay, all right.
Okay, all right.
Well, this is a great segment.
If you want to reach the show, you can via a letter.
And the letter you can send, how?
You can send it to weekly PlanetPod at gmail.com.
Or there's a Planet Broadcasting Greatmates Group, and you can put it in there.
That's right.
The YouTube video that I play the theme song from has 25,000 views currently.
And I'm pretty sure we haven't done 25,000 episodes.
No, we're probably half of that.
Half of that, at least, yeah.
Okay, well, who's watching this then?
Who's doing it?
I don't know.
Weirdos and perverts, probably.
Probably getting up to their own thing
and they're like, before I do this thing
that I'm a pervert about, I'm going to play the letters theme.
Yuck.
Yeah, exactly.
Yeah.
Yeah, and we're enabling that.
Oh, no.
Yeah, should we shut it down?
Let's shut it down.
Let's shut it down.
Yeah.
Let's, what's do it?
Here's an email from George.
Hello, James and Mason.
I think Superman 3 is one of the worst movies ever,
but I love the junkyard scene where Clark fights Superman.
Are there any scenes that you really enjoy from movies
you could otherwise do without?
I actually like the Superman 3 junkyard scene from Superman 3.
Can you have an original goddamn thought for once in your goddamn life, James?
Do you think now would be a good time to do that?
I think so, yeah, absolutely.
I've been coasting.
I've been coasting for decades.
I mean, coasting is good, isn't it?
Yeah.
All right, I got a couple.
I would say a lot of X-Men stuff.
Oh, it's Quicksilver or whatever.
Yeah, Quicksilver or whatever.
Oh, it's Nightcrawler or whatever.
It's the opening war montage in X-Men origin.
That's a great one.
You can pretty much, if it is a bad...
X-Men movie, it will at the very least have one decent action sequence in it.
Except for X-Men Apocalypse.
Unless there's a Quicksilver scene.
Then that bit's fine, I guess.
But it's not the best Quicksilver scene, I think.
No, that's the second one.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
I would say there's a garotting scene in Ghost Ship at the start.
Oh, yeah.
Terrific.
And that's a whatever movie that I don't remember.
Well, Garotting is selling it short, I think.
Oh, yeah.
It's a bisecting the entire crew.
Yeah.
Of the ship.
With a big wire.
The big wire, big piano.
I guess even the spirit of that
Resident Evil, the original movie, has a laser hallway.
Yep.
Which is awesome.
You've seen Valerian in a thousand times.
Yeah, I've actually seen it a thousand times.
As perfits the movie.
There's a market sequence in that,
which takes place on two planes of reality.
There's like an action sequence.
Yes, that's right, yeah.
And I don't even hate that movie.
Look, despite the whole Luke Bison of it all.
He's a beautiful.
He is, yeah, I don't like that part.
But I think that movie's quite fun.
They should have done another Valerian, I think.
I mean, who's going to do it, though.
No one.
The guy who directed Evil Dead.
Byrne?
Maybe.
Maybe.
He's French.
He's French guy.
He's French guy.
I think Pearl Harbor's an atrocious movie.
Correct, yes.
But the, and it's not accurate, but the attack on Pearl Harbor is an amazing sequence.
Yeah.
I think there are, of the Daniel Craig Bonds, I think half of those are probably not very good.
Wow.
I don't know how many there are.
But Spectre, I think, opens with the Day of the Dead sequence.
Oh, yeah.
I don't know if it is a oner, but it like, it feels like a one.
It feels like a one.
It feels like I want to.
I think that's good.
And obviously, you know, you put your best sequence at the start.
Totes.
You know, because then people will be like, I don't like the rest of this movie.
I'm going to leave and they go to the box office and they're like, too late for a refund.
Idiot.
Go back in there and enjoy your subpar movie.
Absolutely.
You dumbass, you stupid dumb ass.
Stupid dumbass.
Idiot, dumbass.
I mean, Alien 3, there's some good stuff in that.
I mean, I probably like that movie better than, I maybe everyone likes that now.
I don't know.
Does everyone like that now?
Aside from all the murder, a Batman v.
A versus Superman warehouse fight.
That's good, yeah.
That's a good movie.
You could probably just pick any comic book movie
except for Madam Webb and Maldives.
Madam Webb conceptually has the super villain serial killer guy,
which I think is good.
But I guess there's no individual scene in that movie
that is any good.
Yeah.
Is there?
Let me think.
No.
No.
There's a bit where they replace a Pepsi can with CGI.
That is good.
Oh, yeah, the barbecue sequence.
Barbecue sequence.
I guess anything where, like, Dakota of Johnson is just navigating that movie is quite fun.
What's good in Craven?
Nothing, right?
When the little Craven's in it at the end?
Yeah, but that's not really, I wouldn't call that a scene.
There's a chase sequence where he runs across the city and grabs a helicopter.
I think that's okay.
God, I don't know.
What about the bit in the last glass movie where Bruce Willis gets drowned in a puddle?
That is fun.
That is fun and a good movie.
It's a fun and a good movie.
I would disagree there because it is.
a good movie. Oh, there's a giant bear in that X-Men movie.
It's true.
Certainly haunted school. Yeah.
But that's less a scene than more a bear.
Yeah, okay. You know?
Oh, somebody's, I'm just looking at clips here and somebody on Facebook has put the
the ghost ship sequence. Yeah.
You should, people just should look at that.
Speaking of Bond, do you like the Madonna bit from Die Another Day?
No, it's awful. I mean, there isn't anything good in that movie.
I think there probably is. I just can't remember what it is.
Yeah. That'll probably do it, though.
I think in the movie Oceans 12, where the character played by Julia Roberts,
people are like, oh, you look like Julia Roberts.
I think that's a good scene.
I think that's funny.
Everybody else likes it.
Yeah, including me.
Including me.
I'm aware.
Mason, I've got a question from Nicholas, who says,
my four-year-old went to watch minions and monsters with his mom.
Oh, yes.
And the monsters terrified him.
He now makes me hunt monsters every night before bed,
both inside and outside and refuses to sleep until I do.
10-8-10 movie.
I also saw Minchin Monsters
the same day I saw Moana
So I took my daughter to that
And some of her friends were there or whatever
And it was pretty fun
So you took your daughter to two movies in a day
Yeah
Wow
Because it was a Moana screening or whatever
Oh yeah yeah yeah
So you have you have
I guess you worded your kids up
You're like listen
Yeah I didn't spring it on
No no no no
My son didn't see Minions and Monsters
Right
He was doing something else
But um
Drugs
Yeah he was doing drugs
Wow
But um
It was
It got two genuine laughs out of me.
One of which was pretty embarrassing.
Yeah.
Was it big farts?
Someone was doing a big fart.
One was a beheading.
There was a surprise beheading and you see the beheading.
Okay.
And it's genuinely fun.
Of a minion?
And there's a moment where the minions...
And it's also, it is a love letter to like classic cinema with silent film and like...
Have you seen any of them?
Yeah, I've seen all of them.
I don't hate any of them.
If I was going to say one, which one should...
should I see. This one? Yeah, you could see this one. Okay. And there's a moment where,
because the minions become huge movie stars in the silent film era.
Big movie stars. And then it moves to the sound era. And so they're making all these
classic Hollywood movies with the minions, they just talk in gibberish. Yeah, right. So they can't
make anything useful with them. And there's a moment where they do the opening, the sequence of
Citizen Kane, you know, where he died, Citizen Kane himself dies. And he drops the Snowbird,
he says Roseblood, but in this, it's a minion and drops it. And he says,
poop and I literally and I laughed out loud because it's just and that which is I don't know I
kids wouldn't get that but they would think it's funny I just didn't yeah it just caught me completely
off guard that's something that see what I like about that not that it you know not that it's high
art or anything but what will happen there is kids will watch that and then when they're adults
they'll be like oh I'll watch this with my kids maybe and they'll go oh I see that's funny that's
citizen Kane that's citizen Kane that's when Citizen Kane is when Citizen Kane
died and he lost his citizenship because he died.
True.
It also mixes, because it's set in like the 20s or whatever, 20s or early 30s.
Maybe it's early 30s.
But it's also like, it's a love letter to like, like, the 1950s creature features and like the blob and like the day the earth stood still and whatever.
And the day the blob stood still.
All stuff like that.
So it, look, again, it's a fucking minions movie.
Yeah.
Bear that in mind.
But it, it's, you know, there's some.
redeeming moments in it. I could sit through it and I did fall asleep just for a little bit.
Nice. But I did like that poop joke. Yeah. That's right.
It feels like you fell asleep and then you woke up on the poop joke and you were like,
ha ha ha, I'm still awake. Ha ha ha. Paying attention. It was like that. Paying attention.
Yes. I'll tell you this much, James. This is from Deb. Not Christopher's questions.
Quistopher, Quicksstaffer is not emailed him for his any more questions. I'd tell you that much. He's
really dropped the ball once again.
Damn.
This is from Deb.
Hi, my so, and James O.
I always love finding new things to watch and read from you guys in the Facebook group,
but I was curious if there were works that you solely haven't read or watched us
because who it was recommended by.
I wanted to read June, and this co-worker I hate kept recommending it and kept talking about it.
Now I just can't look at it because I don't want to give that guy a reason to talk to me.
This was the case for Star Wars 2 when I was 10, a kid much older than me,
told me the entire Star Wars law, and it took me 15 years to actually watch it.
God, that would have been exhausting.
It's like a reverse suggestible.
Yes.
Yeah.
That's an awful thing to happen to you.
As a 10 year or somebody just more dump.
More dumps on you.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
God.
I find, like, I, I would, when it comes to people suggesting things, I would prefer it.
And this is, I guess, more common on the internet.
What I don't, what I think doesn't work is somebody goes, oh, I'd love to watch a sci-fi movie.
What would you recommend?
And somebody will just put 20.
sci-fi movies and it's just the titles.
You're going to say like, like something?
Like, I wonder which movie that's like.
Yeah, right.
The sci-fi movie that's like.
Even if it's just, even it's just recommend me sci-fi, it should be like, I've got
one recommendation for you, and it's this movie, and it's about this, and you'll like it
because of this or whatever.
Like, I need, I need specificity, but not, don't give me the entire plot.
Specificity, but not authenticity.
Absolutely.
Okay, good.
That's my family motto.
But, um,
Yeah, don't just give me 20 recommendations.
Yeah, I agree.
Just the titles and it's like, well, I, okay, well, now I just have to go to the Wikipedia summary these and just look at each.
Yeah.
I could, I could probably have done that myself.
Yeah, I think you're right.
The specificity is good.
Also, when somebody asked me to, like, recommend something for them, which happens.
Or, like, what have you seen lately?
Yeah.
I'm often like, well, what are you like?
Yeah.
And what are you like?
Yeah.
And do I like you?
No.
And then I can give you an idea of what you might be interested in.
Yes.
So, yeah, interesting.
Interesting.
Interesting.
Alex Funder says, hello.
Hello, Alex.
As a funder of misinformation,
will be a reference we made.
I'm curious, who you would like to see
continue the June franchise after Denis Villanouv directs June Messiah,
which is June 3, I think.
I would be happy if nobody just leave it.
Just leave it, aren't they, don't they get all weird
and not as good after that?
Or are they better than ever?
Oh, that's so well.
And someone turns into a worm.
Yeah, I guess you could get Luke Besson, except for all that stuff that he's done.
Who's good with weird body stuff, like, and weird?
I don't know.
I want to say give it to David Lynch again, but he died.
He died again.
There's also a June Prophecy TV series.
Oh, yes.
Anybody watch that?
That's out and done, right?
Yeah, I guess.
Okay, terrific.
Good.
Great.
Great.
Good.
Great stuff.
Yeah.
I don't really have anybody in mind, to be honest.
Who directed Sicario 2?
I don't know.
Let's find out.
Dave of the Soldado.
Yes.
Wow.
Stephano Salima.
Okay.
Maybe get all Salima in there.
Do people like Sicario 2?
I feel like they don't.
Yeah.
Who...
I mean, ideally he would come back and do it, right?
Yeah, yeah.
I reckon you get a horror guy to do it.
Okay.
The June sequel.
Well, do you need...
There are horror, so many horror elements.
That's what I'm saying.
Hollow elements?
Yeah.
Like a guy turning into a worm.
That happens in a horror guy.
Dune.
That's what I'm saying.
You really focus on the turning into a worm part.
Yeah, that's the best part of Dian, probably.
I had someone turned into a worm.
Yeah.
Okay.
I don't know.
I don't have an answer, which is my answer.
Just whoever did the series.
How about the Russo brothers?
Oh yeah, that's good.
How about the Duffer brothers?
Okay, that's good.
How about the brothers grim?
Yep.
How about the GOTE bros?
How about the Wayne, the Wain's brothers?
Wain's brothers.
They can do a parody.
Okay.
Parody of Dune.
Parody of Dune.
Doob.
Yeah.
Dove.
It's called Doob.
It's got dube and there's a pop porn bucket and it's got pronouns.
Nice.
And that's funny.
Nice.
And the sandworm's smoking a big doob.
There's a scene where all the emperor's troops, they're putting a big dobe in the down the, down in the sandworm.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
They do the thing where they make the stompers come out and the worm emerges.
They give it a big dube.
And then it's like, I don't even feel like eating everybody anymore because I've smoked a big doob.
I'm loving dobs.
I'm loving dobs.
This was up.
I'm loving dobs.
It was up.
We've fixed it.
We fixed it.
We've solved.
We've fixed it and solved it.
What's next?
How about this, James?
How about this?
I'm ready.
Okay.
Oh, we're going to say,
does anybody recommend it something to you?
Oh, yeah.
You think they suck?
Yeah, I mean, a lot of people over the years and less now have been like you would like the Big Bang theory.
Yeah, right.
And I had seen clips of it, but I'd be like, I don't like that at all.
And I've never seen much of it, but any second of it I've seen, I'm like, this sucks.
That being said, there is a show that looks pretty full.
Which I think is being produced through HBO or something like that.
Yeah, that's interesting.
That is wild.
Is that the only Big Bang Theory spinoff?
No, Mason.
There's Young Sheldon.
Oh, I forgot about that, yeah.
Okay, terrific.
Terrific.
Terrific.
Matthew's emailed in.
Your recent conversations about syndicated commercials got me remembering a series of commercials
starring Jim Varnie and his beloved character, Ernest P. Wurrell,
who went from commercials selling milk to make about a dozen films
where he joined the NBA, Fort a troll, gained superpowers and other hijinks.
My question is, did these make their way to Australia?
Yes, they did.
Wait, Jim Varnie's earnest character started as a milk salesman.
Evidently, we got the movies, we didn't get the commercials.
Yes, we are familiar with Ernest goes to camp.
Absolutely.
I don't think I've seen any of them.
But, uh...
They were always on TV when we're kids.
Yeah, but again, I remember, like, I put that in the same category as drop dead Fred, like that kind of thing.
Right, okay, yeah.
Yeah.
Damn, there you go.
So we started in 1980.
How does that, was he called Ernest in the milk commercials?
That's a great question.
And who owns the concept of Ernest the milk guy?
Great question, isn't it?
Ernest goes to camp as a first one in 1987.
God, why is Ernest going to camp?
Why is he going to camp, Mason?
Probably some sort of work release program.
Yeah, it might be.
Yeah.
God, there you go.
Yeah, we got...
So, do we have something...
Oh, so did we get that?
Apparently so?
Yeah, we got all the earnest stuff, yeah.
But not the milk commercials.
Not the milk commercials.
I mean, might have, but that would have been
before I was born.
Which is not a lot of things.
Our milk was always advertised by Kenny the Toilet Man.
That's right.
You're not going to like this, but a lot of the Kenny stuff was taken out of Troy, the Troy video.
Oh no!
All the Kenny the Toilet Man stuff?
I had to trim it down.
That's fine.
It's in the extended.
What about in Gods of Egypt?
Oh, was it that one?
Maybe.
Maybe it was that one that I took it out of.
Yeah, no, I did mention Kenny the Toilet Man a lot.
Yeah.
Well, we'll find out this week.
Okay, well, leave this in.
Leave my betrayal in.
The gods of agent one went like the original recording was like 35 minutes.
Wow.
Like it was too long for a...
Too long for what that is.
Agreed.
I'm looking for things that I could remove.
I understand.
Yeah.
I understand.
I'm sorry, Mason.
Goodbye Kenny the Toilet Man.
He's on the new series of Taskmaster.
Yes, he is.
He's Kenny the Toilet Man in that, isn't he?
Correct, yes.
Philip says, is there any live action remakes that you feel are better than the original?
Bonus question.
Is there actually a live action remake that you'd want to see made?
No.
But for the first part,
Ghost in the Shell.
Just kidding.
Not as good.
Did you know there's a new Ghost in the Shell anime TV series?
It's more accurate to the original manga.
And it's supposed to be good or whatever maybe?
Well, I mean, people are opinions are divider.
People are crying about it.
People are crying about it.
You can say that about any adaptation or any new thing that's coming out.
People are crying about it.
I really love that.
The original movie was the first animated, like, anime that I saw in a cinema.
So I'm like, I got a soft spot for that one.
Was it a re-release or was it when it,
initially came out. Oh wow. What was that like late 80s, early 90s? It was 95 I think.
Oh, was that late? I thought it was earlier than that. That's a good movie. And the remake is not as
good. But what I would say is at best, these are slightly worse. And that's the best case scenario.
I'm ready. One that I think is genuinely better is Cinderella. I think Cinderella remake
live action 2015 is better than the original. Who is Cinderella? Lily James.
Oh, okay. What's her name?
Lily James
She was Pam Anderson
The Pam Anderson
That is Lily James
Yeah
Yeah so that one
And it's got one of the Game in Thrones
And Cape Blanchets in it
And Hello Bonham Carter
It's also one of the ones where like
It felt like
Oh this is due for a nut
We haven't had Cinderella in 400 years
Right yeah
So it felt like
Oh we could do another one of these
Where now it's like
Didn't we get a Moana movie last year
Yes we did
But now we're doing the original Moana
Yeah
Oh Josh O'Connor's in that
Josh O'Connor's in that
Joshua Connell, what are you doing here?
What are you doing here as the pig slop boy or whatever in the stables?
Hi, I'm Josh Okina.
We know.
You don't need to do the Josh O'Connor impersonation.
Well, I'm going to.
Hi, everyone.
So there you go.
There's probably other examples.
What would you like to be turned into a live action movie?
God.
We have to do one.
Terminator?
What?
Genesis?
That's already a movie, James.
Sort of.
Yeah.
something animated.
Centurions.
Yeah, I guess.
Would you want to see like a...
Yeah, something like that.
Is this specific animated movie?
Okay.
Because I think there's more scope
to take an animated TV, a man animated show.
It's happening, and I don't think it'll be good, but Voltron.
But Voltron is animated.
Yeah.
And there's no live action in Harry Kev.
I don't think it'll be good.
Yeah, if it, yeah, and again, it's being dumped on MGM Plus or whatever.
Yeah.
If it is, I would like,
I think it'll be good if they give us the same level of graphical fidelity of,
and I know this is not a great example, but the Michael Bay Transformers movies.
Which are bad movies obviously, but they look amazing.
It's hard to see what's going on, but the Transformers themselves look amazing.
They're robots.
Exactly, when it was required that he made them transform on screen.
Yeah.
If the Voltron in this movie looks as well integrated as the Transformers in those movies,
I think that'll work for me.
We'll have a wonderful time.
We'll have a wonderful time.
They should remake Pinocchio in live action.
They've done that, James.
Have you seen it?
I've seen it. Because you said we were going to see it, then you didn't see it.
Well, I think we're even, because I saw Moana.
I don't think we're even at all.
What about, I mean, this is kind of a cheat, but Batman Beyond.
That's not a cheap.
Then we've done it.
Then we've done it.
We would love it.
People like Ben 10.
Yeah.
Not my era.
Also, the thing about Batman Beyond is that,
as the timeline
as the timeline of our lives stretches out
the Batman that people wanted
the Bruce Wayne that people want to be in it
the actor is always ages out
but there's always a new one on the way
so I think at this point you get old Affleck
Oh old Affleck
I think you would do it because he doesn't have to put the suit on
Yeah
He doesn't have to go to any effort
And he can be like this Batman took up smoking
And Duncan Donuts
This Batman was married to Jennifer Garner
And Jennifer Lopez
They call him 2 Gen Wayne
That's what they call him
And yeah he's got the weird sperm thing
They made his sperm
That's part of it
They put his sperm in Terry McGuinness's dad
That's part of it
Change the sperm
Yep
So Terry McGinnis is his son
Because they change the sperm
The studio is like Ben Affleck
Do you have any notes
And he's like yeah I want you to change Batman's sperm
Ben that's already part of the story
Oh I didn't know that
He's just gone on a bunch of press junkets
where he's talking about how they absolutely insist
that they change Bruce Wayne's sperm
And at the end they show him like
Somebody shows something on their phone
The clip from the show and he's like, wow
All right
I don't like it as much that I didn't think of it
No
That's parallel thought though you know
Yeah yeah it happens
But again like we can and then
And if he ages out of it we can get Patinson
Yep
You know.
Yeah.
Whoever.
Whoever.
Brandon Sclanar.
Brandon Scalnar.
Matt, me.
You know, all these guys.
All these guys.
Well, you got Mason.
Ooh.
Ooh.
This from Simon, who says,
since you guys were waxing lyrical
about how great woman of tomorrow was,
I got it, read it and loved it.
All right.
I don't read many comics.
I was hoping you guys could suggest
some other Tom King's standalone comic runs.
But I would also say just standalone runs.
Just in general?
Just in general?
So don't recommend.
You're not going to do it.
Tom King one then.
No, I probably will.
Mr. Miracle.
Mr. Miracle is great.
I also like he had a run of a character called The Human Target, which is...
Oh, yeah, that you like that.
Yeah, that is out in full, and there's a big, there's like a deluxe collective edition,
and that's about a guy in the DC universe who is a bodyguard, and he's a specialized
bodyguard because he's a master of disguise and he disguises himself as the target.
And then when, you know, the assassins come to kill him or whatever, he, he...
Like boo.
He's like boo, exactly.
But in this instance, he disguises himself as Lex Luther and then he gets poisoned.
Then he has like 12 days or something like that to figure out who done it and why.
Yeah.
So I think that's a good reason.
I didn't start it.
Yeah.
You could look at his work he did with the CIA.
You could look deeply into that.
Yeah.
You could definitely look into that.
But don't reveal anything because you'll go to jail.
You will all.
And that's best case scenario.
Yeah, that's right.
What are some other good...
You did a vision.
Yeah.
Oh, it's just standalone stuff.
If you never read any comic books.
So there's...
If you like, Woman Tomorrow, you might, like, Superman up in the sky.
That's a good one.
Oh, that's a Tom King also, yeah.
Kind of structure, yeah, yeah.
If you...
I mean, if you don't read that many comics at all,
I would probably go to your local, not even your comic shop,
but I would go to your local bookshop
and go to, like, the graphic novel section.
Because there's a lot of...
They've got famous ones.
You might want to read a Batman E. One.
Yeah.
You know.
Yeah, absolutely.
Something like that.
I'm reading The Dark Night Returns in my son at the moment.
Oh, yes.
And he's loving it.
Except sometimes in the newscastle stuff and sometimes with the, the, um, Ronald Reagan.
The Ronald Reagan.
So I had to explain Ronald Reagan to him.
But also, uh, because I do voices.
Yeah, of course you do.
Hey, I'm Ronald Reagan.
Thank you.
Yeah.
That's what I would do.
Yeah, yeah.
I'd do it better than that.
I'm the president of the United States of America.
Oh, and the, um, and the gang dialogue.
He's like, I don't like this.
Yeah.
Yeah.
No one likes this.
No.
No.
You're lucky you're not watching the animated version because it's worse.
Yeah, it's a weird stuff in that comic, but he's enjoying it.
A lot of people will say if you don't read comics, read Watchman.
I think that's too much of it.
It's too much of investment if you don't read comics, I think.
Yeah, it also might be the last comic you ever read.
Yeah.
Because you'd be like, this is definitive comics.
Yeah, I get it.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
This is the deconstruction. I get it.
What's something that would just be fun?
Saga is a good series?
That's quite long.
It kind of goes on forever, though.
It kind of goes on forever.
It is a saga.
It is a saga.
If you like wrestling, you might like do a power bomb by Daniel Warren Johnson.
I haven't read that.
It's good.
Yeah, it's supposed to be good.
Yeah.
Okay.
All right.
Those are all good.
There's a million trillion examples.
Or just, again, just go on your local comic book shop and just go to the trade section.
Well, ask for a recommendation.
Yeah.
They like.
Say, I like this.
Do you have anything like that?
Yeah, that's right.
Or I like, I don't like this.
Do you have anything like Tom King without the war crimes?
No.
No.
All comic book writers and artists have done something terrible.
Yeah, we have a wall of non-problematic comic book authors and artists here.
For now.
Yeah.
They slowly make their way.
Yeah, and it's one column here.
Yeah.
And we just, we just pull them off the wall as required.
Yep.
I got one here from Alex.
Last one.
I've noticed a lot of dudes in my generation, Z, seem to idolize Anakin Skywalker for some reason.
I was not aware of this.
I was not aware either.
Are there any characters you don't understand being idolized?
I think it's, yeah, it's anyone awful.
It's like, I love the guy from falling down.
I love Tony Soprano.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
I love Walter White.
And I-awshack.
Yeah, exactly.
It's like, yeah, you can love a character.
Yeah.
But it's when it's like, because they're cool and whatever.
But it's like, Tony Soprano is like broken.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
But also because they exist in a closed system where like you can't respond.
to be Tony Soprano because you would get like all the troubles foisted upon your life,
but you don't have the mob on your side and money and influence and power or whatever.
If you're like, I'm just going to act like Tony Soprano because he's so cool, you will ruin your life.
That's right.
Or you become the head of the mafia.
Yeah, it could go either way, really.
It's probably a flip of a coin.
Yeah, absolutely, yeah.
Yeah.
Any characters that people like that you're like?
Yeah, Roshak.
Yeah, oh yeah, you did say that.
What about skibety toilets?
A lot of people idolize Skibbitty Toilet.
I don't know what his values are.
Skibbitty Toilet.
Probably similar to Kenny the Toilet Man.
There's a movie.
Kenny versus Skibbittie.
Nice.
Yeah.
Hell yeah.
There's a movie.
Yeah.
It doesn't matter who win.
We all get covered in poop.
Oh, no.
Which maybe you like.
That's a standard Tuesday.
Yeah.
For most people, not us.
Not us.
We do it on a Wednesday.
That's right.
Is that the show?
Have you got any more letters?
That's the show then.
That's the show.
Unless you want to cut out any more Kenny the Tollet
toilet man.
I'm sorry,
all right?
Sometimes things have to go
kill your darlings.
Just to be clear,
I left in every word that I said.
Terrific,
good,
important.
Very important.
Even the deep breaths
that I take in the moments
where I go,
what was I going to say?
And I just Google something quickly.
Yeah,
that's all in there.
Yeah, yeah.
Yeah.
Well, if we took all those out,
we wouldn't have anything
because we're both just constantly
being like,
um,
um,
um,
um,
um,
folks,
thank you so much for telling your friends about the
podcast.
Because that is how we get new listeners.
And thank you for living a five-star
review on your podcast app of choice.
If you do so, James, we'll find it with his little internet investigations.
Dittily, did, did, dip.
That's me.
There it is.
This is from, do what?
From the USA says, Fet, I'm giving this podcast five stars ironically.
We don't care.
We'll take it.
As long as it's five.
And Adzi likes it.
Also from the USA says, a little bit of easy listening.
At the time, I don't actually care what these two are talking about.
Same.
I'm interested in their content.
They banned their vibe.
There's gina sequa.
They are easy to listen to.
A non-negotiable part of the week, a part of the week.
a part of every week. Do yourself forever.
We do have a certain Genesee qua
Choir and a certain soup du jour.
Today it's potato and leek. Is that what
soup de jour is? Yes. It's the soup of the day.
Sweet, I wish I had soup.
Actually, I am having soup for dinner. My mum makes me soup in the winter.
Isn't that nice? That is nice. Do you want any?
What kind of soup?
Pumpkin.
And your mum made it? Yeah. I don't want it.
Folks, if you want to get into contact with this, you can go to weekly
Planetpot at gmail.com.
Whoa, what am I supposed to do about that?
