Welcome back everybody to another episode of The Weekly Planet where we talk movies and comics and TV shows.
My name is James, also known as Mr. Sunday.
Nick Mason, what are you got to say for yourself?
It's great to be here and it's great to be bold and brave and cool and calm and beautiful.
What do you say that?
Well, I said that because we recorded something earlier.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And you said it's the only podcast where we were bold and brave and cool and calm and beautiful.
And I said we can be that on every podcast.
I don't think we can.
Just because you read it out doesn't make it so.
Well, I'm going to say, make it so.
But what I'm going to say is maybe by the end of the episode,
episode, listeners can email in and they can say, were they bold and brave and cool and
calm and beautiful? And I think while we do this episode, we should do it with an eye to being
bold and brave and cool and calm and beautiful. We should ask ourselves, every time we say
anything, is this bold and brave and cool and calm and beautiful? Not just one thing.
Yeah, I was going to say, will it fall short if we hit the couple of those. You will, yeah.
And we have to have them all at the same time. Every sentence has to be bold and brave and cool and
calm and beautiful.
And when people write it and say whether we have or done it, are you looking for any kind of
feedback about how to improve?
Just say we have.
Just say we do it.
Yeah.
I guess that's, just get on board with a joke.
That's bold.
Yeah.
What you're doing, but I don't know if it's beautiful because it feels desperate and desperation is not beautiful.
That's not calm, is it?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Desperation could be beautiful.
What about, um, desperate housewife?
That was beautiful.
How desperate were they?
I don't even, I don't know.
I don't even really know.
What was going on in Wisteria Lane?
When did that jump the shark?
Ooh.
Why did you say, why did you say, ooh?
Because that's what we're going to be talking about on this podcast.
Jumping the shark.
That's beautiful you've done that.
It is wild to me.
We've never done an episode on this before.
I had to look it up and then I looked it up again because I'm like, I must have missed it.
I mean, we've definitely talked about it.
Yeah.
And we'll talk about what jumping the shark even means if you do not know.
Yeah.
Or you might know what it means and not know what it specifically references.
I learned recently that some people, they think it's like a vague,
idea.
Yeah.
They don't think it's an actual thing that happen on an actual, actual TV show.
Okay, yeah, no, absolutely.
Well, it's become other things.
It's become like nuking the fridge.
It's become, which we should talk about, I guess, as well.
I think TV tropes would disagree.
I think they would say that there's a lot of nuance there, and those things are completely
different.
Is TV tropes?
Yep.
Then I'm not interested.
Okay.
One person's opinion.
Ridiculous.
Wow.
I want a collective opinion, like a rotten tomato.
Theodore Vincent Tropes is his name.
And he works hard.
He's worked hard for years.
Has he?
Yeah.
Just because you work out doesn't mean you're right.
It's a dot-org.
They're always right.
They are always right.
I didn't know that.
So we've got some news in the lead-up to that, Mason.
Terrific.
We've got some Joe Russo were talking about the Russo brothers,
how are they filming the Avengers movies?
Cameras?
Yes, but also, are they always using scripts?
No.
Don't eat them.
Come on, the Russo brothers.
Don't eat them.
What an amazing, what an amazing trajectory in Hollywood.
Yeah.
Because they did, they directed, you know, those good episodes of community.
And then they did the winter.
Soldier.
The Winter Soldier, great.
Yeah.
All their Marvel movies are good.
Currently.
Oh.
All their Marvel movies are good.
That's actually true.
Winter Soldier Civil War, the last two Avengers movies.
Yeah.
That's crazy.
Yeah.
What about their other output?
But their vibe is not good.
And their other output is bad.
Yeah, yeah.
I mean, you know, it's not the same, but like some directors, like a Mel Gibson, not good.
Whenever I say something like that, especially on YouTube, people are like,
what did you just, what did you tell me some things that aren't good?
I don't know.
What do you fucking look into it?
And also, you know.
Yeah.
You just want me to tell you and not change your mind.
It's the Colonel Sandler's facial hair that he has sometimes.
That part I like.
Yeah.
That's good.
Yeah.
But, you know, good director, Kazbane.
Yeah.
And he made that movie where Mark Wahlberg was a bald pilot recently.
That's true.
And I'll tell you a few other things about him.
He's bold.
Yeah.
He's certainly brave.
Yeah.
He's cool.
Yeah.
He's calm.
Oh, no.
And he's beautiful.
You mentioned, that's undeniable.
He's got that facial hair that you love.
I don't think he's beautiful anymore.
I think he was beautiful
He's B-B-C-C-B.
I don't think you should put that into a search engine.
I don't know what it's going to do,
but I don't think it's going to be good.
I think if we put it into a search engine enough,
it'll become this.
It's when somebody's bold and brave and cool and calm and beautiful.
Give me that acronym.
B-B-C-C-C-B.
Incognito window.
B-B-B-B-C-C-B.
Log out.
B-B-B-C-C-B.
Safe search off.
What is it?
Well, at most frequent,
refers to the
Balasaur, Baddrak,
Central Cooperative Bank in
India. What if I did
like video? What would it
come up with them? Who's to say?
Yeah, I would... You know what? I'm just going to close
this. Because I...
Yeah, maybe. I think I'm going to have a bad time. I think you're going to have a bad time.
I'm having a beautiful ball time or whatever.
Exactly. So we're talking about that. We're talking about Dave
Battista getting big again for God of War.
We're going to talk about Peter Cullen's final
performance of Optimus Prime.
You know about this? You heard about this?
I know, he was Boldenbrose.
Robin Cullen Cumber
Beautiful.
That's an denial.
Trailers,
I will probably
briefly mention
Harry Potter,
but also Street Fighter.
Yes.
And also,
something that I've written
it's we can file this
under bullshit.
It's Florence Pube
may be playing
Money Penny and a spin-off
Money Penny series.
Okay, sure.
Yeah, man.
First time I'm hearing of this.
Time code,
it's because it's fake.
Time code, I mean,
it could happen,
but it's fake.
Time codes below,
if you do want to jump
to any particular section
because Rob Collings,
who is this.
It's a sterling job,
yes.
He's born and beautiful.
I would say he's, you know, he's a real BBCCB, and that's undeniable.
I agree.
Yeah.
Because it's now not just a description, it's a vibe.
It's a vibe.
You can do it.
You can do it.
You can do it.
You can do it.
Yeah.
This is by AP News.
I was speaking to the Russo brothers about how you're going about filming these new
Avengers movies or whatever.
And they said, we are working very hard.
That's what they're doing now.
That's their new gimmick.
Is it?
Yeah, one word at a time.
They should put that in their films.
have like Ironman share a scene with
I don't know, whoever.
Yeah, whoever doesn't matter.
They do a bit of a ping pong situation.
Because, you know, they're filming these back to back.
They just finished a Doomsday or whatever.
Did they?
I don't know.
They finished it minus six or seven weeks of reshoots probably
where they put the plot in.
And they put new footage into Endgame,
which they're re-releasing four minutes of or whatever.
You're going to go re-see Endgame?
Nope.
Yeah.
My son might want to say it, so.
Okay.
But I don't like the idea of going to the cinema.
Where is he on your,
your random viewing of the
Oh my God, he's all over the place.
He said all the mainline stuff,
so now he's just dipping back and forth.
He's not an Ironheart as well,
but he hasn't seen Iron Man 3.
He's all over the place.
Yeah, I admire it.
He's on his own...
I'm like, you got to see,
because he wants towards Vision quest.
I'm like,
we've got to watch Wanda Vision,
the very,
which is actually good,
except you won't get any of the TV.
That's true, yeah.
Because you probably don't know what modern family is.
Well, you could get him on a TVTropes.
And then he'll know.
Do you have that guy's phone number?
Tom Vincent
tropes or whatever his name is?
You know I don't have his notes.
Because it's an org.
Yeah.
That's right.
You just get him on the org.
Anyway, they said this on, uh, Joe Russo said this about like the script.
He said, we always view the script as a living organism.
Marvel in the past, and it's not just Marvel.
A lot of studios have been accused of, like, starting to film a movie before the script
is finished.
Uh-huh, sure.
He said, we're improvisation-based, rehearsal-based directors.
We like to see what the actors bring to the characters, and sometimes you don't get the actors
until a few days or a few weeks before you shoot them.
And a lot of the time, that's when the magic happens.
I don't disagree for like little character moments.
Sure, yeah.
But I'm hoping they've got the narrative plotted out.
I'm going to be real with you.
I hope they don't have it.
I hope they don't have the narrative down.
And when we go in, it's just all over the place.
And it's just people coming out of the cinema's being like, what even?
It was weird when Iron Man and whoever did that one word each.
Yeah, that's right
But I guess it furthered the plot in an important one
Absolutely
I would just love it if they're like
They're just contradicting the previous law
Left and Right
They don't even care
And they're just like
We're done after this
Whoever whoever wants to fix it later
It's their job now
Yeah
That would be great
Also they don't care
Because this is presuming
The rumor has of course been
And I think Kevin Figer said something about this
It's going to be a soft reboot
Of some sort
Yeah, I think this is also
This is also a soft reboot
in a way because they're a jumping off point.
But then they're immediately going to get rid of all the X-Men
or put them in their own dimension and introduce new X-Men.
Folks who've already jumped off on the last jumping off point,
you can jump off again.
At any time.
A little treat for you.
If what you live is actually having a jumping off point and jumping right off,
and you jumped off last time at end game, jump off again.
Anytime.
Get back on board and jump off again.
This is also tracking pretty huge at the moment.
Avengers, there's still a big draw, you know, people.
So I guess every Marvel movie,
from here on out is going to be a Spider-Man movie or an Avengers movie.
Hell yeah.
Or both.
Yeah.
And that's good.
I love team-up movies, but don't even give them individual movies anymore.
Let's just do, let's get 90 people in a movie.
That's what they're doing.
Every time.
That's what they're doing, yeah.
I mean, do you think this, will it be good?
I don't know.
Do you think?
I think it'll be fine.
I think it'll be fine, yeah.
Yeah.
I mean, the thrill of like seeing the X-Men universe and whatever.
How was that for you?
I mean, the thrill would be if they didn't tell us about it.
it in advance.
Like this is...
I mean, I'm sure there's a bunch of stuff
they haven't told us.
I think there's some stuff
they haven't told us.
Like Deadpool or whatever in Wolverine.
Sure, yeah, exactly.
Yeah.
That's fun.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Hootin and holler and I can't wait for that.
Step bull and Wolverine.
Hey,
mind if we step in, you know?
Yeah.
A bit of that.
Yeah.
I can't believe you didn't...
Do you mind if we?
Step.
Hugh.
Oh, he's fallen asleep.
He's fallen asleep.
He's had to sleep.
too much chicken and rice.
He is 60 or whatever, so that'll do it.
Have you seen Robin Hood's old?
Do you Jackman's Robert Hood's old?
Did you see...
Did you say...
Did you already, Andrew Garfield thing?
Yes.
Yeah, fascinating stuff.
We'll get to that in a second, but we've got to pay out on Avengers a little bit more.
Sure.
Yeah, I don't know.
You got them, man.
That's about it.
I don't know.
I think we're going to have a party without us.
Deadpool, Wolverine.
We're here.
We're here, are we?
Yeah.
That's right.
Or are we?
We are.
I don't know.
We filmed this somewhere else on a different day.
Yeah.
It's good.
Anyway, Robin Hood, Andrew Garfield.
Oh, yeah.
So there's a movie coming out called The Uprising.
Yeah.
And then briefly it was renamed the uprising.
On Robin Hood origin.
The origin of Robin Hood or something.
Even though Andrew Garfield is not playing Robin Hood, he's playing a different guy.
Yeah.
And then they panicked and then they removed that.
People were very, very, people on the internet were very sour about it.
Also, like, he's got a curved, like,
Like.
Penus.
Penus.
Wow.
Which he uses.
But he's got that, you know, it's like a scythe thing that he's using as a weapon.
He's not even a Robin Hood fellow.
So what's the deal with?
That's closer to a friar tuck, if anything.
Yeah, it is.
But what do you think?
Because the peasant revolt.
Were they like, oh, this will be, this will get more people in?
Because I don't think it will.
No.
When do Robin Hood movies do well?
They don't.
I just ask you, Jackman.
Just ask Taryn Eggerton.
Just ask, um,
Kevin Costner.
Just ask Robin and his merry men.
Errol Flynn.
Ocean's 11 guys or whatever they're called.
Whatever that one was.
Just ask Errol Flynn or one of his slaves.
Yeah.
So they also said it might have been because the death of Robin Hood
like severely underperformed and whatever, whatever.
But I don't know, man.
I don't know either.
I just don't know.
I don't know anything.
I don't know anything.
Mason?
Yes.
Dave Battista is getting big again.
He got thin and now he's big again.
He's posted a video talk.
to his Instagram, we said third week into weight training again.
Okay.
Two more months.
Only three weeks.
He's looking big.
Well, muscle has memory, Mason.
Oh, hence the term muscle memory.
That's right.
Two more months to get, and he's drugs.
Two more months to get where I need to be like riding a bike.
What he just thinks about, he thinks about drugs?
Yeah.
Wow.
He thinks about getting big drugs and then he gets those big drugs and then he gets big.
Okay.
But it is a thing where like, if you are a certain size or fitness, it is easier to.
Interesting.
Your body, you can get there much quicker than.
Oh.
That's why I've always maintained.
size because I'm incredible.
And I've got a muscle memory.
So, you know, something to think about, Dave Batista.
We were worried.
We were worried if he wasn't going to get big again, but he's getting big again.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Also, looking at him in the video, I'm like, that's big enough.
Yeah.
That's fine, because Kratos can, you know.
He's perfectly big.
He's perfectly big.
He's got magical muscles.
Yeah, exactly.
It's not even about these actual size.
He's got magical muscles, you know, yeah, completely.
Some of the other guys in that game, they don't have big muscles.
They're just little guys.
Or they've got big bellies or whatever.
Big personalities.
Yeah, man, big personalities.
He should have been big personality, Kratos.
Do you think so?
Yeah.
He's not even Greek, Mason.
What?
Yeah, he's not even Greek and I'm mad about it.
He's from wherever he's from, America.
America.
Wherever he's from, his family's from, I don't know.
It's certainly not Greece, isn't it?
It might be, but I don't.
It might be Greece.
I don't know.
It's not for me to say.
Yeah.
If people could harass him on social media, that would be great.
We all love that.
No, don't do it.
You don't.
I have to say I don't do it because some people will.
They will. Most people won't.
Some will.
But some will.
They will and then they'll tag us in it.
Like we didn't say it was a joke.
Exactly.
Wow.
So Peter Cullen, of course we talked about last week, passed away at age 85.
Did you know one of Batista's ring names was Leviathan?
Yes.
Wow.
No, I didn't know that.
Wow.
Was this like early days wrestling?
Who's to say?
Because sometimes they'll try a few personas, won't they?
Yes.
Yeah.
Well, it's the last one listed.
So maybe it's the most recent, maybe it's the least popular.
Hmm.
Okay.
What was he, was he just Dave Battista at the end?
Or did he have like a...
For a long time he was just Batista, but they took the U out.
Okay.
Because I guess people would be like, oh, his name's Mautista.
Well, you can't have that, can that?
Early life.
Oh, James.
Yeah.
Are you ready to eat your words and eat that shoe you promised to eat if you're ever proven wrong on this internet?
I would love to eat a shoe, whether or not this is true or not.
David Michael,
Batista Jr. was born in Washington, D.C., the son of Donna Rae and hairdresser David
Michael Batista. His mother is of Greek descent.
Oh, my God.
Yeah.
Oh, my God.
Mason.
Yeah.
I'm going to have to eat a second shoe because I've already eaten the first one before the show
because I was hungry, basically.
That's right.
Yeah.
Not embarrassing.
I'm not even that hungry.
Like, if I was hungry, that's fine, but I'm not even that hungry.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I didn't know he was Greek.
Well, he's not.
He's American.
Yeah.
You know what I mean?
He could be president because he was born in the United States.
He could be big president.
That's right.
Big president.
That's right.
Would you watch a real life thing that happens called Big President?
Where the president's big?
It's just a real thing that happens?
Yeah.
It's not a TV show.
We just get a big president.
What do you think?
It's not a streaming service or a show or a movie.
It's not a dedicated streaming service to the big president.
No.
Okay.
We just get a big president.
I'd watch it once.
All right.
Yeah.
Okay.
Does him being the big president, does that extend out to anything else?
Does he have a big Air Force one?
Like it's one of those big super guppy planes.
Oh, yeah, yeah.
No, I don't know.
I don't know.
Okay.
I don't know.
Are you looking for a riff?
I don't know.
You asked me another question about it.
Does he have a big oval office desk?
I don't know.
Because it hasn't happened.
I'm just like this.
If it did happen, I don't know.
You're just gauging interest to you.
Yeah.
Because you're running this?
You're developing this.
Nothing to do with me, man.
Okay.
This is just free market research in case somebody out there who's listening to this
wants to do something called Big President.
Yeah.
I mean, I don't know.
And maybe Dave Batista is involved.
Maybe he could because he was born in the USA.
He could be big president.
Yeah, that's interesting.
Yeah.
In fact, he's born close to,
he's born in Washington, D.C.
Yep.
So that's, you know, he's as close as anyone's going to get.
But again, I don't know.
I don't know either.
Yeah.
Anyway, as mentioned, Peter Cullen, who passed away.
Yeah.
Apparently his final performance as Optimus Prime.
And I say final,
because I'm sure there'll be some AI shit at some point.
Absolutely.
It's announced that in the Optimus...
There's a 40th anniversary re-release of Transformers
and they're tagging on a bit at the end
after the credits, I think it's after the credits,
called Optimus Prime Awakening.
Okay.
It's going to be select screenings of the 4K re-release.
Okay.
This is happening between the 17th and 22nd of September.
The animated short promises emotional storytelling
and electric action with new performances from Frank Welker
of course played Megathot.
but also Soundwave.
And Peter Cullen in his final voice performance as Optimus.
So, yeah, if you've seen the original movie, I'm sure you haven't or have.
I don't know, actually.
I'm sure it was one of those two.
Yes.
I'm sure you either have or haven't.
Optimus Prime dies and that and all the kids are traumatized forever or whatever.
And he eventually did end up coming back.
Correct, yes.
But so they're just, they're doing this bit on the end.
Okay.
Thank you for your sacrifice, Optimus Prime.
Thank you, Mr. President.
And it's good I can finally shake hands with the president.
I can see eye to eye because you're big president.
Yeah, but I can't stress enough.
What I'm talking about is a real thing about a fictional scenario.
Yeah.
I'm talking about a real scenario.
This is a spin-off.
This is the light year.
Okay.
This is the movie that...
Sorry, it's based on that.
It draws inspiration.
Yeah, yeah, it draws inspiration from real.
So your big president is the height of Optimus Prime.
Correct, yes.
That's great, actually.
Yeah, it's good, right?
Yeah, cool.
Big president is a good idea.
Or it could happen, whatever it is.
I can't remember.
Are you going to see...
I am seeing this.
I've got tickets booked with a friend of mine and his son who swims with my son and who transformers and whatever.
And so I'm going to see this re-relace in cinemas, which I wouldn't do if my son wasn't going.
I've seen it.
And I could watch this on YouTube whenever.
You can tell me about it, I think.
Yeah, you're not interested.
What if it's the big president thing, though?
I guess I'll tell you.
I'd need to know for lawsuit purposes, wouldn't I?
You think they have time to not miss out?
Wait, so your, I mean, it was my idea.
So if anything, if you threw them for money.
I'll see you in court then, I guess.
I'll see everybody in court, I guess.
I guess.
So not enough to get you in cinemas.
I'm interested to see this on the big screen.
Again, not that I would see it regardless.
I guess I haven't seen it on the big screen for 40 years.
One of the earliest movies you saw in cinemas.
I think probably, yeah.
Was it the first?
It might have been, I'm not sure.
Damn, 86.
What was the He-Man movie?
The live-action one?
87.
Okay, then.
Might have been.
Might have been something else around then.
Could have been anything.
Yeah.
Could have been anything.
anything.
Could have been anything.
Trailers a hoi?
Hong, tingling.
I didn't watch it.
It's the Harry Potter trail.
You don't have to.
Okay.
It's just the same stuff.
It's like,
oh,
put your hat on.
Harry, get your wand, Harry.
Well, that's Professor Quigall, Harry.
Whatever.
Okay.
All of that.
So there's going to be a bigger emphasis on Professor Quigle.
Yes, that's right.
Okay.
Which is good.
Okay.
So yeah, I mean, it looks, I mean, I saw a lot of very positive comments.
Because we were like, wow,
finally that I could do justice to the books or whatever.
But also it's a lot of people like,
I hate this because I already do it
or I hate this because I don't like J.K. Rowling.
Yeah. And why is this happening? What's the point of this?
And why is it so washed out?
Why is it look like? No, I saw a comparison clip.
You don't even know. I do know.
Well, the original movie is very bright.
Yes. It's a bright fun time.
Which is what kids like. Kids like bright.
Right?
The Max Landisne's written.
Yeah, that's right.
Or Cobb.
I like it. Kids like it.
Was it David Eskoy? No, it was David Ayah.
Oh, yeah.
Love Orcop. Good movie.
Anyway, but we also got another trailer for Street Fighter.
Yeah, that's right.
How you feeling about street fighter?
I'm looking forward to it.
It looks fun.
It looks super fun.
It does look fun.
Yeah.
Seems to be part of the narrative is where you can do a big Hadookin.
Yeah.
But Ken can't do a big Hadookin and he's...
But they're both do Houdukins, don't they?
I think he's going to learn to do a big Hadoon, but I think he's going to...
I think he's big learning in this movie.
He's going to learn how to do the Dragon Punch.
Oh.
That's his arc.
Do we see that in the trailer?
Yes.
There's a big spinning jump?
Yes.
And we see the spinning kick that Ray...
You see all the signature moves.
I love how they're doing all their big moves.
E. Honda's doing his big 100 hand
get you in the head times. Correct, yes.
And all of that. Big chunly thighs
or whatever. All of that's
happening. Yep, correct. I am interested to
see how does this compare to like
box office wise or interest wise
to the latest mortal combat?
Oh yeah. Because it feels like there's an energy to this.
Maybe I'm misinterpreting
this that that didn't
kind of have in the lead up. This one's...
Streetfighter a more popular franchise?
A hundred percent it is. Yeah, you reckon? Yeah.
I mean, it's, you know, it is the back
I mean, Mortal Kombat, of course, is the backbone of your ultra-violent...
Your x-ray backbone.
Yeah, exactly.
Some Resident Evil movies did it.
But...
The good ones.
I mean, Street Fighter is the, you know, the precursor to all modern one-on-one fighting games,
and it's still very popular.
Absolutely.
There's been a lot of clones of Mortal Kombat, but there's been a trillion clones of Street Fighter.
That's fair.
Well, Street Fighter, too, specifically, so...
How do you feel about when...
Street Fighter moved into 3D.
Didn't like it.
Well, there was a 3D game, but then they're now, you know, they are, they're still
2D fighters, but they're 3D.
They're 2 and a half to hear, whatever it is.
How do you feel about that?
It's fine.
It's fine.
It's fine to me.
But if you're talking about Street Friday EX, which was the virtual fighter style one,
not for me.
Yeah.
Did that big flutter jumps?
Yeah, did have big flet jumps.
Good, good.
Yeah.
This one seems to have, this one has committed fully to the game, like being accurate to the game in a way
that Mortal Kombat has still yet to do, I think.
As in like, like the looks or as in like...
Oh my God, Giles' hair.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I mean, obviously, Ken's going to have to learn to do the Big Dragon Punch, obviously,
but I think they've just...
They're just like, and it's a street-fighted tournament,
and let's all fight.
You gotta go around and do it.
Yeah.
Who plays Vega?
It's, um, the guy, he's a musician,
and he also covers his face all the time.
His name is...
One of the guys from Darth Punk.
No.
It's not Michelle Bangalta, whatever his name is.
Oh, his name is Orville Peck.
Orville Peck, there we go, yeah.
Orval.
Yes.
What kind of musician is Orville Peck?
I don't know.
Let me check.
I don't know.
It says he's in the new street fighter.
South African country musician.
There you go.
Based in the United States.
Couldn't be president.
Not big enough.
For the president that I want to see.
That's right.
Yeah.
I don't think anybody could be,
be big enough for the president I want to see.
The size of Optimus Prime.
Optimus Prime.
Wait, Optimus Prime.
We do a split screen.
President Optimus Prime.
No, no, no, he's big president.
Yeah.
We get Optimus Prime to play Big President.
Oh, but he's not the actual president?
In the movie he is.
Okay, because he can't, because he wasn't born in America.
He was reactivated.
That's true.
Does that count?
I think his lawyer would attempt to be like, well, maybe he's,
remember he's on that overpass and he scanned that truck?
Yeah, he did.
Scan an American truck, man.
Yeah.
Does that count?
He's always sent an American truck.
I don't know.
That would be like if somebody got...
Vote for Optimus Prime American truck.
That'd be like if somebody got surgery to look more American.
More like JFK.
JFK than...
Like, does that count?
I think it should count.
I think if you're willing to get surgery to look like one of our previous presidents
of these United States of America,
they should let you at least attempt to campaign for president,
even if you don't win.
It also does seem ridiculous to me.
that you have to be born in America to be the president.
Huh.
I mean, I don't even think necessarily like an immigrant could be president for various reasons.
Sure, okay.
But I don't know.
It just seems ridiculous.
Okay.
I don't know, man.
You know how they sometimes they say about movies.
They say what Hollywood should do is not remake a famous, good, popular movie.
They should remake a movie that didn't work initially.
Yeah.
And then try and make it good if it's got a good concept or what have you.
Sure.
You get, people should be allowed to do, if you're not born in America, you get surgery to look like one of those presidents that wasn't very popular.
I only got one term or like died in two weeks or whatever.
Yeah.
Like, you'd be like, I'm running as president taft.
You know?
Okay.
They're like, all right, good.
That's good, actually.
Yeah, finally.
Yeah.
Somebody's braiding big and can do it.
Yeah.
Interesting.
I'm President Garfield.
And yes, I do hate Mondays.
And I love lasagna.
I love lasagna.
Yeah.
Yeah.
He's feeding that cat lasanne.
John?
Oh, yeah, it is.
John Arbuckle.
He's just throwing down whole trays of lasagna.
That cat?
Yeah.
Like tin and all.
I mean, but that's probably, that was probably dinner for him and the lady that he likes,
whose name I can't recall.
Liz.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
That was probably dinner for John Arbuckle and Liz, and then Garfield gets into it.
I think he's also making it for Garfield.
Yeah, that is weird, isn't it?
Yeah.
I think so.
Yeah.
Don't feed your cat an entire tray of lasagna.
Yeah.
In my opinion.
Yeah.
Anyway, Mortal Kombat.
No, cheat fighter.
I could be James Garfield.
Show me.
You can have to get that surgery.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I could do it.
How long was he president for?
One year.
Seems like a pretty good run, man.
Then what happened?
He died or whatever?
About a year and a half.
He died.
Or whatever?
He died.
He was shot by Charles J. Gito, a diluted office seeker.
Oh.
Huh.
You can do that?
Yeah.
You can shoot the president?
Yep.
you, Nick Mason, can shoot the president.
I can and I could and I will.
I've said it before and I'm saying it again.
Ah, good.
I look forward to the visit we will have.
This is out October 16th of this year.
Streetfighter up.
This was initially going to be the Australian boys
behind Talks of the Hand.
Oh, the Raka Racka Racka Boys.
Yeah.
But it said it's a different guy.
Different guys now, which is, you know, again,
it does look fun and I like the cast.
I mean, it might also just be bouncing from scene to scene nonsense.
It might also be that.
Yeah, well, that's movies, man.
That is movies.
It's get used to it.
Yeah.
That's movies and get used to it.
Again, this file this under bullshit.
Okay.
This is via, oh, I've forgotten.
It was daily mail.
Okay, all right.
So unreliable British Drek.
Like the bloody politics, am I right, Mason?
Got them.
Got them.
Amazon apparently, well, this happened.
Remember Amazon?
bought the rights to 007.
Well, they bought the rights to everything, didn't they?
Yes.
Everything, MGM.
Yeah, that's true.
Well, that was, that was separate and they had to wrestle them from the broccoli family.
From the broccoli family, that's right.
And the only thing they've done since that kind of happened was...
And the broccoli family were like, we'll never give up creative control of James Bond.
Oh, some money, we'll take it.
But it was also like $7 million or something.
It was lower than you'd think, wasn't it?
Yeah.
I assume it was shares and whatever.
Oh, yeah, right?
But I don't know.
Yeah, because when we saw that initially, I'm like,
must have been a billion dollars, right?
But the only thing they've really done is that Brian Cox Road to 007.
But they also did that thing with Riz Ahmed, where he's an actor attempting to become the new James Bond.
That's good now, isn't it?
I didn't watch it.
That's good, that wasn't it?
I was excited to, and then I just haven't yet.
Interesting.
It was called, I can't remember what it was called.
It was called.
Bates or something?
Bate.
Bate, maybe.
Sounds good.
Yeah, agreed.
Anyway, apparently Florence Pugh is going to earn 10 million pounds.
Oh, wow.
Because she's tipped to play Miss Money Penny in a bomb.
on the spin-off. Is that Pound Sterling? Yes. The Money Penny Diaries will debut on Prime
video and it's based on the books of the same name by Samantha Weinberg under the pseudonym Kate
Westbrook. These were published between 2005 or 2008. I have vague recollection of that.
Yeah. I could see how this, if this was true, which it probably isn't would work and it's a
good solid choice and whatever. Yeah. But I mean, it's probably changed now, but it seemed that they
weren't going to do much outside of just mainline James Bond movies.
Yeah.
I don't even, like, do you need a James Bond cinematic universe?
Do we need the origin of Bond's secretary?
I mean, we had it in the movies.
That's true, we did.
We had it in the movies.
We had it in the movie.
She's not good at shooting James Bond off trains.
No, she is good at it.
Yeah.
That's true.
That's what got her the job.
That's exactly right.
God, classic falling upwards, isn't it?
That's one thing.
That's one of the first things you talk about.
Except for James Bond, who fell downwards.
I did
do that river or whatever
He fell into a title sequence
that swirled and swirled around him
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
That was a good movie
Wasn't it
Was it Skyfall?
It was Skyfall
No that's not
I don't think it's not a good one
Everybody thinks it is but it's wrong
I think it's good
It's fun
Um
Yeah also the idea that
Florence Pugh
wants to be
wants to have two
sort of major film
Character roles
Simultaneously
While also doing
You know good movie
Yeah.
I don't know if I believe it.
I think this is a TV show as well.
Oh, right.
Okay.
What's interesting
how many celebrities
can just knock out a TV show in between.
Absolutely.
It just,
you know.
TV episodes are now like three and a half,
you know,
episodes.
Three and a half minutes.
Yeah.
Quippy style.
So, you know,
people are banging them out all the time.
That's true.
Yeah.
You know,
the Rock made nine seasons of ballers
in between Fast and Furious spinoffs.
The one-o-win ballers
jump the shark.
But he couldn't get that deal,
but then he,
got the deal.
That's exactly.
But in a way
that he wouldn't
the character
wouldn't have traditionally.
That's correct.
Yes.
Yes.
All right.
Let's do our topic, Mason.
Okay.
And we can talk about
the movie Mutiny and what we read it.
Yes, that's true.
My guess,
just for a little bit.
Jumping the shark.
Folks, we're back.
Yeah.
A few segment of the show
and we're keeping it
bold and brave and cool
and calm and beautiful.
As we have been doing so far,
wouldn't you agree?
100% strike rate?
I don't know if the emails
will confirm that.
I think the emails will confirm
thus far 100% strike rate
on B,
B, C, C, B. Don't, don't Google it.
Don't. Please don't.
We're going to be talking about jumping the shark.
We are.
So I've learned recently that I think a lot of people were not aware this is from a real thing.
Yes.
So people will be aware, well, may be aware.
There was a sitcom from the 70s called Happy Days.
When were the happy days?
What days of the week were they?
Sunday, let me check the mnemonic here.
Okay, Sunday and Monday were happy days.
Yeah.
Tuesday, Wednesday were happy days.
Happy days.
Yeah.
Thursday and Friday were happy days.
Saturday, what a day.
What does that mean?
I don't know.
What a day.
You know?
What a day.
Oh, what a day.
That's what I'm talking about.
Just Richie Cunningham in a dark corner of his house, just head in hands going Saturday.
But of all the days, you'd think like that would be the good day, right?
Right.
Because you've still got Sunday.
But not according to him.
And you've had the, you know, you've had a good night's rest, presumably.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Interesting.
I don't know.
Anyway, there was an episode in season three titled Hollywood Part 3.
Season 5, James.
Season 5, sorry.
It was titled Hollywood Part 3 that aired on September 20th, 1977.
This is in the wake of Star Wars fever.
What was going to say?
So, yeah, I guess it was.
So if you haven't seen it, it's a TV series set in the 50s,
and it was predominantly about a nice family called The Cunningham.
It was that 70s show of its day, which was made in the 90s or whatever.
It was, I guess.
But like very...
Why am we getting a show set in 2006?
I bet there is one.
I bet there is one.
I bet there is.
But it...
And because Ron Howard, Richie Cunningham,
later of course being the...
The father of...
Yes.
Bryce Dallas Howard, that's true, yes.
Actoring, sometimes director of the Mandalorian and whatever.
Famous Hollywood director,
a big Hollywood guy.
But it's about this wholesome family,
but the breakout star, I guess, of the show
was there was a local youth,
A local tough
Arthur Fonzarelli the Fons
But he lived in the roof or something
He lived in the roof and his office was in a toilet
It's not important
What he's important is he was a sort of
Marlon Brando James Dean rebel without a cause guy
He was supposed to be the coolest guy
And the toughest guy
And we're a leather jacket
And was real cool
Yeah
But there's a, in season five
Did he get a lot of babes?
I think you got all the babes
All right
Yeah, hell yeah
And then they replaced him
Didn't they sort of
With a cooler younger guy
Yeah, that's right.
Anyway, sorry, you were saying.
But in season five, he's scouted by like a Hollywood,
like some Hollywood talent scouts.
They see him and they're like, we're going to bring you to Hollywood.
And he's like, I'm going to bring them up.
To do what?
To be cool on screen.
Okay.
And then, so he's like, I'm going to Hollywood.
Let's bring the Cunningham family.
Nice.
Because I live in your roof and we've done plenty of business in the toilet together.
I consider you, my family, the Cunninghands.
So let's all go to Hollywood.
Yeah.
And then when he's in Hollywood, he meets another.
cool dude who's like, oh, you're, you're, you're, you're not as cool as me. Um, and the only way
you can prove you're as cool as me is you can jump a shark in, in, on the, on the water.
It was a post-Star Wars universe. It was definitely a post-Star Wars universe. And Jaws.
Um, yeah, so he's, he's, he's wearing his, you could Google it. Yeah. He's wearing his,
trademark leather jacket and white t-shirt. And a little, little pair of shorts. And it looks like the actor,
No, the actor who's of course played by Henry Winkler.
Was an actual water ski.
Like he was water skiing enthusiasts.
Did he do the actual jump, though?
My understanding is he did, but I don't know.
Yeah.
So I guess that's why they did it because they were like,
well, Henry Winkler can water ski.
Yeah.
What can you do?
I can water ski.
It's like any, like you remember there's an episode of Black Books where,
yeah.
What's the guy's name?
Bill, whatever his name is.
Yeah.
He really sat on his balls, like in that episode where he kept sitting on his balls.
Bill Bailey.
Yeah.
He really sat on his balls?
I guess he did.
But there's an episode where he discovers he's a piano prodigy.
And it's because Bill Bailey can play the piano very well.
So they integrate it in where he just sits by a piano one day and he just
do it.
And he knows exactly what he was doing.
He didn't do the ramp jump.
Didn't do the ramp jump?
He just liked water skiing, I guess.
Who doesn't?
Well, me, I've never done it.
Also, this, Happy Days went for 11 seasons.
Yeah.
So this was really the midpoint.
Absolutely.
And so this is considered...
Was Richie County?
Honeyhamming school the entire time?
Surely not.
Maybe he was.
Go on, sorry.
So this is, jumping the shark has then become like the short hand for like, this is when,
this is when a show has lost its way.
Yeah.
Not necessarily has become less popular.
Sure.
But people like, when you, when somebody goes, oh, should I rewatch this series, people
go, yeah, but after they jump the shark, no bother kind of thing.
Right.
Oh, he graduated in season four.
What is interesting to me as well.
Yeah.
You don't see the shark, by the way.
No.
It's just, there's like a circle.
Yeah, it's supposed to be a caged shark.
So also, what do you, why?
Why?
I don't know.
I guess the idea that he would just fall into the cage, the shark's cage and be killed.
What I love about this is all the context behind it.
So the term was coined by future, this is on Wikipedia.
The term was coined by future radio personality, John Hine and his university.
of Michigan roommate Sean Connolly
in 1985.
Okay.
In 1997,
Hein created a website to jump the shark.com
to publish a list of approximately 200 television shows
and his arguments as to the movies,
the moments each had jumped the shark.
The site became popular and grew with additional
user-contributed examples.
Hein sold his company Jump the Shark,
incorporated for over $1 million in 2006.
Oh my God.
And so I don't know.
I'd never heard of John Hein before.
he's an American radio personality and former webmaster, obviously jumpthashark.com.
Is it still around?
Oh my God, I went to 984.
Sorry, jump the shark dot.
com.
Not org.
This isn't even going at all.
It's like I'm pressing enter and it's not even doing anything.
But anyway, John Hines, Wikipedia, babe.
No, it's gone.
John Hine is an American radio person.
See, that's the thing that like that, it was just in that pocket where you could just have an idea.
You could sell crap.
Somebody was probably, it was like, remember there was that William Shatner?
Star Trek.
Yeah, Star Trek.
Remember who's that William Shatner?
There was that Twitter feed about funny things.
Oh shit my dad says.
There it is.
Yeah, they're going to show.
And there was like eight simple rules for dating my teenage daughter, which I think was based on a meme.
It was just that era.
So somebody must have been like, we can make a TV show about the concept of jumping the shark.
Absolutely.
And we'll buy this guy's concept and his website and his company.
company and then we'll make it and then it just never turned out.
Insanity.
But anyway, John Hine created the website jump the shark.com.
He currently works at the Howard Stern Show.
He's written three books, Jump the Shark when Good Things Go Bad, as well as fast food maniac from Arbys to White Castle, one man's super-sized obsession with America's favorite food.
He also wrote Jump the Shark TV edition.
Yeah.
He was also in the sketch comedy troupe comedy company and a comedy troupe just kidding.
Just kidding.
Just kidding.
but in popular culture
similar to Howard Stern's producer Gary
Hein has several media mentions in pop culture
with the phrase hit him with the Hein.
The phrase was coined by production staff in the back office
to mock Hein based on his perceived low energy level.
The phrase was then popularized by Jason Kaplan
and often on-air staff member.
What is all of this?
It has been used on many PGA tour events
in some cases to the dismay of the announcers.
What's that?
I don't know.
I don't know.
Who is this guy?
John Hine.
Mr. John Hine.
Okay.
But I love the idea that people on,
that the PGA tour,
sometimes something happens
and somebody goes,
hit him with the Hine.
John Hine.
Just remember to hit them
with the John Hine.
It doesn't stop there.
Based on Hine's statement
on the Howard Stern show,
who either enjoys the phrase
or is annoyed by it.
Singer Rick Astley produced a song
dedicated to the Hittem with the Hine concept
on Soundclay.
Oh my God. So Rick Astley, the singer of Never Gonna Give You Up,
created a song, recorded a song based on the concept of Hit Him with the Hine,
based on John Hine, the creator of the concept Jumping the Shark.
He was in San Diego Comic-Con in 2011, I can tell you that much.
Connecticut-based musician Jamie Jaster, front band of the metalcore band Hate Breed,
released a song inspired by the phrase on his SoundCloud.
Hid him with the Hine is also used in later versions of Sony's MLB,
the show franchise, which is a game, a video game.
What's happening?
I don't understand.
We've hit a weird pocket of the internet.
I'm just looking at this guy's Wikipedia.
I don't, I don't.
Right?
What a world.
Well, his occupation is a radio personality, personality, author and webmaster.
Yeah, former webmaster.
That's such a 2000s thing.
Bold and brave and cool and calm and beautiful.
That's John Hyne.
Or depending on whether he likes being, because of his low energy or whatever.
Hit him with the Hein.
The John Hines.
Hit him with the John Hine.
Okay.
Hit him in the Hiney.
That's where it comes from.
That's where it comes from.
It also happens in, because Henry Winkler is in Rest of Development and he literally jumps
over a shark in that.
Yes.
On a pier, yes.
Anyway, we talked about, so there's numerous examples of this or what people perceive
to be.
Like, some are more kind of definitive than others.
Others are just kind of like, well, this is the point for me where a show, you know,
took a complete nose dive.
and could never recover.
Quote from Ron Howard.
I remember Donnie Most and I sitting there
looking at the script.
This is the of the episode.
Donnie was really upset.
He said,
Oh man, look at what our show
has kind of devolved into.
It's not even very funny.
And you know Fons is jumping over a shark.
And I kept saying, hey Donnie,
we're a hit show, relax.
You know it's hard to have great episodes
one after another.
Fonzie jumping over a shark,
it's going to be funny and great.
I remember thinking that creatively
this was not our greatest episode,
but I thought it was a pretty good stunt,
and I understood why they wanted to do it.
And what I remember the most is,
it was fun actually driving the speedboat.
He, Richard, got it.
Yeah.
I guess you would remember driving speed.
Yeah.
Yeah.
God.
But the thing that has to be remembered
about the jumping the shark idea
is the show went on to be such a massive success
for years after that.
Yeah.
And he says it's a fun expression.
He gets a kick out of it.
Absolutely.
He left in series seven, apparently.
And then came back in like 1984.
Oh my God.
Anyway, you're a Happy Days fan?
Yeah.
Great.
No, I wasn't really.
But it was on TV, wasn't it?
Oh, it certainly was.
Yeah.
Anyway, what's your favorite example of jumping the shark?
Well, I think we should talk about Bond.
Uh-huh.
Because we talked about it earlier.
I think Bond is one of those franchise that in every iteration, it eventually jumps
the shark and reboots itself.
Yeah, uh-huh.
I think, you know, Connery got over it.
I don't necessarily think he's a jump the shark.
I don't think Connery.
ever got over it.
No, he didn't.
If we're going to talk about James Bond, he never got over.
He died mad.
Yeah.
But the Roger Moore era was probably the jump the shark.
I mean, I guess you could argue that...
I mean, he jumped some alligators, didn't he?
Yeah, and he went to space.
Often, also, people probably talked about this in relation to Fast and Furious
and other franchises.
Going to space, Jason, whatever.
That's often a turning point.
Star Wars.
Yeah.
These are moments where Joe's Jump the Shark.
Roger Moore did corks through a car across a destroyed bridge while a slide whistle noise went.
It would have worked if it wasn't the slime whistle.
It still did work.
It's amazing.
Like, conceptually, that's an amazing idea.
Yeah, but it ruins it with the slime whistle.
It ruins it.
Because it goes,
you know what I think is wrong with that as well?
And I think it was a, I think we've talked about this,
but that jump is too perfect.
Right.
It's just like, it's so beautifully engineered.
Yeah, like in the real world.
And it's incredible.
Yeah, it is.
It's incredible.
But it looks.
If anybody hasn't seen that in the man with a golden gun,
yeah.
James Bond, Roger Moore and Sheriff J.W. Pepper.
Yeah, who's also from the...
He's in another one.
Yeah, but isn't he...
Is he the guy from like...
What's that? Bert Reynolds?
Oh, any which way but loose?
No, smoking the bandit.
He might be in that.
Yeah, I want to know.
Anyway, sorry, go on.
But they drive off a destroyed bridge
and the angle of the bridge is such
that the car corkscrews through the air
and then lands perfectly on the other side.
I think the problem is also that like...
You're saying it's too perfect
because it wouldn't happen in real life.
It wouldn't...
But it did happen in real life.
That's the thing.
That is literally real life.
No, I understand that.
But what I'm saying.
Also, it's like the idea that James Bond like saw that and went, I'm going to, I can do this.
Right.
You know what I mean?
And he nailed it perfectly, I think takes away from like any element of danger.
Because he knows and can do everything.
But again, like, and Dalton probably not so much, but Brosnan jumped the shark, you know,
the died other day when he's wind surfing or whatever or invisible car or the guy who gets Caucasian
surgery or whatever, which is how you become president.
It's true.
And then, you know, and Craig probably
Spector was, well, you'd probably say Skyford, but like
his brother's blowfeld and whatever. Like, it kept
happening. Yeah, I would say.
And then they bring it back. Yeah, I'm not sure. And then it's fine.
Yeah, yeah. I know this one for you, though. The heroes heal everything
blood. Adam Panetti. We miss her, but
yeah. She did play a, she
leader who can...
Whose name was heal anything blood.
Yes, exactly.
Yeah.
But she had Wolverine-style healing factor.
Yeah.
And then one of the big plot points was that,
well, if you just extract some of her blood,
that will inject it in anybody.
Inject it in anybody and will heal anything that happened.
And one point,
Scylla Playbaj, Zachary Quinto does say,
give me the heal anything blood.
He says that on camera with microphones,
and they put that in the episode.
Yeah, you better believe it.
Damn.
What season was that, probably?
too.
Yeah, probably too.
Probably too.
It definitely wasn't season one.
Yeah.
But also, we put this in the planet
broadcasting great mates.
We put it on the Patreon
for people who have got their own
examples.
Do you think Indiana Jones,
because we're talking about it's early
but the fridge is that,
is that the moment
where like that franchise
because that also,
I think the opening to that fourth movie
is strong.
It's pretty solid.
Yeah.
And I don't know whether it's the fridge,
but it's definitely the rest of that movie.
Yeah.
I don't think there's anything
prior to that because again the idea that he ends up in a in a like a 1950s atomic testing area
that was kind of fun with richie cunningham with yep um that was kind of fun but i think that that
is definitely and the the charler buff swinging around yeah with the monkeys yeah because it also
that's the point i think where we've gone from silly but somewhat believable stunts
to how would this, how would this, it's like the James Bond thing.
It's like the corkscrew.
It's like how would he know he could do that?
Yeah.
Why would he just?
Absolutely.
I think also that that's a different era of Indiana Jones where like you can do anything
with CGI.
So it becomes,
so the realism is that like we didn't even have to actually build a model or like a physical
thing I should say.
Yes.
Anyway, whatever man.
Yeah.
Whatever.
Anyway, we've got numerous examples here.
Go on.
A lot of people have talked about the fun.
and furious.
Yep.
So Matthew, for example, oh no,
has that jumped the shark numerous times or is that?
Well, that's the thing, yeah, because people have said,
because I think there's a different.
People have different points.
There's also a difference between just a decline in quality.
Yes.
And a, and a shark's totally.
But Jay Michael White, and again,
a few people have mentioned this, but they,
is he related to Michael Jay.
Yes, correct.
Wow.
From street racing culture to super spies,
racing down dams to flying through space or something.
So, yeah, I think it is, I mean,
that evolution is strange because they'll still do a,
street race every now and then.
Uh-huh.
But is it, is it the moment where they go to space, but I would argue it's more when they
become, where it's not just heists.
Yeah.
Yeah, it's pride of that.
It's just super spies.
It's definitely that, I think they, again, I think the high point for me was probably
seven, but to me it's the one where they're just like, we're going to go on a mission.
Yeah.
We've been given a mission.
From Kirt Russell or whatever.
We've been given a mission from the head spy guy.
What do you mean a mission?
Because they're the best.
Who's authorised this, the government?
Get their guys.
You're working for the government now?
Yeah, work for the government.
It's good.
I guess.
Yeah.
I guess.
Do you think also like, because the Happy Day is an example of this.
Yes.
When shows recast like the lead characters.
Uh-huh.
When that, so Anna's mentioned the X-Files.
And I think there might have been one in the Planet Broadcasting group.
So one, can argue, jump the shark up to the first movie and move to L.A.,
but the revival season just going off the deep end.
Bring back Mulder and Scully's sons.
Spoilers.
Some sort of stranger thing.
Return the cigarette smoking man so he can die two more times.
New World Order and vaccine conspiracies.
Jeff Winger, Alex Jones, the episode Babylon being racist and also terrible with
Magic Mushroom Telepathy, I could go on.
But it'll also like, Mulder and Scully just stopped showing up.
Yeah.
Like they'd pop back in every now and then, but there was a moment where Scully got pregnant
in real life.
Right.
The actor, Jillian Anderson, who left for a bit and came back.
And then Mulder, like, completely got ridden out at one point in versus a place by Doggett, who's the Team 1000 and whatever.
He does end up coming back.
Is the key point for a shark jumping when the writers get bored?
And does it happen less now because there's fewer episodes of a TV series, for example, or a movie franchise?
Yeah.
But there isn't 22 episodes of season.
You don't need to have a million ideas.
You don't need to have a million ideas.
is it when, I find for a lot of things,
it's when the series starts acknowledging the tropes within the series.
Right, okay, yeah.
Like when I remember season probably seven-ish of the sitcom scrubs,
where they're like, hey, you're the funny guy and you're the serious character
and you're the blah, blah, blah, like they within the universe,
they become aware of who they are.
Right, okay, yeah, right.
The Todd, etc.
Exactly.
Yeah, maybe, but also you can be aware of that in the,
be good. I feel like community, it's just certain episodes and seasons. It's just, and seasons.
It's just tropes. It's just acknowledging like obvious TV tropes and then just doing them.
TV tropes. Yeah. I don't know where you are in Supernatural. Matthew says the episode of Supernatural
where Sam and Dean and Castile was sucked into the TV by ghost and teamed up with Scooby-Do,
which I love by the way. But yeah, a lot of people say also just after season five.
So do you say Scooby-Doo? Yeah, this is a Scooby-D episode of Supernatural.
And, oh, and it's animated.
I guess.
Is it animated sort of like those Star Trek animated?
So you haven't seen this, though?
No, I haven't.
I dropped off long before that.
But yeah, Supernatural.
I mean, by the end, they're fighting God and stealing each other's souls and memories and whatever.
You know, it's all, it is what it is.
Mm-hmm.
You know.
But yeah, that show should have left, should have ended like a long time ago.
What year was that?
That episode was, it was in the 16th episode of the 13th season.
So, yeah, I guess that I'll, you know, that.
Again, that's one of those ones where they did a million episodes a year and all of that.
So, you know, I'm not overly surprised.
Oh, Paul says, for the record, there was an episode of Happy Days where a guy literally jumped over a shark and it was the best one.
That's a quote from community.
Ah, okay.
How much of Dexter have you seen?
All of it?
Because Rob says Dexter starting with season seven.
You don't have to remind me specifically.
Well, Rob says it started to become Team Dexter as two.
too many people were in on it.
Because for a long time,
Dexter,
of course,
you know,
serial killer that only kills
other serial killers
kept it a complete secret,
you know,
nobody,
everyone's,
some people suspected,
but no one knew.
Yeah.
And then his sister knew.
Yeah,
right.
Yeah.
That's probably true.
I mean,
now it's back to nobody
knowing again or whatever.
Because he killed them all.
He did.
Jay Michael White says
Dexter season with the lady
was a psychologist,
but also his mother or something.
So I don't,
I don't even remember that.
Okay.
I don't know what you're talking about.
But,
Yeah, you're probably right, I guess.
Yeah.
God damn.
Oh, Dennis says slider.
I can't even pinpoint when they jumped the shock because they kept doing it and the show kept going.
Maybe when they took out Jerry O'Connell and replaced him with his brother and then they...
Yeah, what they did on the show Sliders, if you can't remember, Jerry O'Connell's a boy genius and he creates a device that lets you slide into an alternate reality.
It was a, it was a very early multiverse TV show and every episode, again, they went into a, because the device that he used to go and,
to alternate realities and he dragged some people along with him.
It malfunctioned and he couldn't.
They always, instead of going to an alternate reality and then back to their home reality,
they just kept bouncing between other alternate realities looking for their home reality.
Even though there was infinite alternate realities.
Which would have been close enough.
Yeah.
And sometimes though they were good, but often there was just like, oh, this is wrong actually and bad.
And this is some kind of dictatorship or whatever.
Or dinosaurs.
Yeah, dinosaurs.
But it was a, you know, it was a multi-22 episodes.
season, a lot of work.
And so Jerry O'Connell, even though he was like the linchpin character.
Yeah.
Because he was the guy who created the technology.
The sliders.
The sliders.
He wanted to, he wanted out.
But they brought in the character's brother who adhered to.
It was his real brother in real life.
Yeah, he not existed.
And then they merged the characters, I think.
Yes.
So they were just one guy.
But it was just his brother.
Yeah, it was, yeah, 100%.
Because Jerry O'Connell.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Didn't want to do it anymore.
I think for a lot of shows, I think the remove, like you said with the X-Files, it's the,
it's the removal of the main characters and then the, the, then the, the question then becomes,
well, why does the series still exist?
Yeah, absolutely.
Like with the X-Files, if you don't have a character who believes wholeheartedly in the X-Files.
Yeah.
A lot of shows do that with, do you remember the British show Spooks?
Sure.
I mean, they do that every season.
Yeah, but what they did with that is they just replace.
If the lead character was a blonde man and that actor wanted to leave the show,
they replaced him with another blonde man.
One time it was Brian McFadden or whatever, wasn't it?
Maybe.
The first season and a bit.
Probably, yeah.
Yeah, absolutely.
Actually, you know a lot about Buffy.
Sure.
Jesse says the only one I can think of is a good example,
Buffy the Vampire Slay introduced a younger, never heard of sister character in season five.
The late Michelle Tractonberg.
That's right.
They integrated her and her origin perfectly into the show, and it's probably the best season of the show.
Yeah.
That's a good example.
agree with that? Is that jumping the shark though or is that just a good thing to put in a show?
The opposite of jumping the shark, I think it's called growing a beard or something.
I'm going to look that up. Is that a thing that happens in Happy Days where the Fonds grows a beard?
Finally grows a beard and we all go, this is a good show again, we think. Yeah, that was a great
concept, the idea that, it sounds like it shouldn't work. Like everything there sounds bad.
What happens is Michelle, Buffy returns home from fighting vampires all day and then,
sister's there and then
their mother says something they both go, mom,
and it's like she's always
been there and Buffy isn't aware that she's never
she wasn't there before. And what was the reason?
She got created with magic.
Yeah. And then she just sticks around and is to whatever.
Yeah, she's just an established camera. So does a sister know that Buffy
was real? Or like, or was she
like, I don't have a sister either? No, they
both think that her sister is real.
Okay. They, they,
they, they, they, it's, reality has been
altered so that the character. Did Spike do it?
I don't think Spike did do it.
I don't think he has that power.
He's a chip in his brain though sometimes.
Sometimes he has a chip in his brain, yeah.
I think that was probably the jumping the shark moment for Buffy as well.
Because what happens, of course, is that, you know, there's a bunch of evil vampires in that show.
And except for one of them, Angel, played by David Boreannis, who is a good vampire.
Because in the Buffy universe, all vampires are evil.
Oh, right.
Except for Angel, because when he was, and he was evil for a long time, but then these, these mad,
that his sorcerers brought his soul back into his body,
which vampires don't have.
And so he then sees all the bad that he's done over the hundreds of years
and he decides to change his ways and become good.
But then that character left for his own series,
and they're just like,
we need this to happen again.
We need this once in the span of all time situation to happen again.
So they just got another of the vampire character spike
and they went out happening as well.
He can do it as well, actually.
Because of a chip?
Sometimes it was a chip, though.
wasn't it?
I didn't watch a lot of Buffy.
Sometimes it was a chip, but I think he did get his solver.
Yeah, they did it for real.
Yeah, that's awesome.
It's awesome, right?
Yeah.
Redville or Red V-1-1-1 says the Simpsons about 20 years ago.
I don't know if that's necessary.
People talk about, you know, the principal and the Porper episode.
Is that the one where Principal Skinner has revealed to be Armand Tam's area?
Yeah.
Right.
And so he's not the real Principal Skinner and whatever, and the real one comes back.
I mean, he's the real Principal Skinner, but he's not the real Seymour-Skinner, but he's not the real Seymour
It's based on...
Yeah, no, it's based on...
What's that story?
I've read it.
I can't remember.
Madman.
Yeah, it's based on Madman.
But for me, and somebody actually said it here as well,
Nate says,
by a certain point,
it's just a constant train of celebrity special guests
and out of pop culture jokes.
For me, it was when, like, oh, Tony Blair's here.
Yeah, it was the Tony Blair, yeah.
And it's not just that,
because it had happened before that.
Yeah.
But it's just like, it wasn't...
Like, I remember an episode where Dustin Hoffman plays,
like, Lisa's teacher.
And it's not Dustin Hoffman.
No.
He's voicing a character,
and they're...
They thought about the character.
The Simpsons is a great example because it has been going for 40 years or whatever it is.
And it's still popular enough that it is, you know, it, it's, I mean, it's still around.
And all the actors have been, have been paid a million dollars an episode for 40 years or whatever.
Yeah.
So it's still that popular.
Yeah.
And yet it, it, it, the quality dipped 20 years ago.
Yeah.
At least.
25 years ago, more.
Yeah.
Yeah, to me, it was the Simpsons is a great example.
Who suggested that?
Was it us?
Yeah, we said it.
No, it was God.
Oh, it was God.
It was God.
Red V-1-1-1-1.
Great.
Won't even admit your real name, Coward.
But that, to me, it was when the show flipped from celebrities or known actors,
either appearing in the show as characters or appearing as themselves and being the butt of a joke.
Yes, absolutely.
And then at a certain point it switched over because it became a cultural phenomenon and actors,
or I guess celebrities, act as musicians, whoever were like, I would like to be on The Simpsons.
Yeah. And then the show was like, well, we should bring them on and talk about how good they are.
Absolutely.
And suck up to them kind of thing.
Yeah.
That's when the whole thing, no, you know, you bring in Sting.
Oh my God.
And Sting's an idiot.
Yeah.
And he's like, I would never, I would never give up on one of my fans or whatever.
And they're like, I don't think.
Exactly.
I think the difference as well, also early on,
they would write celebrities in and approach them.
Or I guess the celebrities were a fan and be like, I'll do whatever.
Yeah.
Where it just became like promotional for Tony Blair War criminal or whatever.
Yeah, exactly.
Yeah.
You know, so.
Yeah.
But I don't remember like, there's an episode least of the vegetarian where like Paul and Lyndon
Mcartney are in it.
And that's like quite fun.
And they're just living on the roof of the Kwikkimat or whatever or whatever's going
So, you know, there are good examples of it.
Mason, what about this?
Go on.
Harris says the introduction of Sherlock's sister in Cumberlock.
The show fell apart after the Rhineback Falls.
But, oof, that was horrendous.
Yeah, I would even say, like, season one.
We're talking to the Benedict Cumberbatch, produced by Stephen Moffat, Sherlock show.
Yeah, no, I think every episode of Sherlock after the second episode of season one is bad.
Like, properly bad.
Maybe.
I know there's a, there's an.
H-Bommer guy video about my Sherlock is bad.
And the only reason I don't like that video is because I also had that opinion.
And then I'm like, well, now everybody thinks I got my opinion from the H. Bomber guy video.
You did always say that.
I didn't know what I said.
I didn't know what I said.
I was awful.
I think it's...
But you like Jekyll.
No, I don't like Jekyll.
I don't like anything where Stephen Moffitt is like, well, I like this concept, but I wish there were black ops guys in it.
Which is everything he's ever done, I'm pretty sure.
Because it's all of them, isn't it?
Jekyll has black ops guys
Dracula has black ops guys
Dracops
Dracops
There it is
They all do it
Dracula's
We've talked about
Doctor Who had to put unit
Yeah
Whatever they're called
Because Dracula
The first episode
Maybe two
It's a period piece
Yeah
And then he
And then he awakens in the modern day
And then it's black ops
And it's black ops
And it's like
Oh that's kind of interesting
But then it's not
Because also you do it every time
And he gets an iPad
Yeah
And he gets an iPad
He's the guy from the Northman.
Who is?
The Dracula guy.
Oh, he is a Dracula guy in the Northman, yeah.
But, yeah, no, every, I don't like Sherlock at all.
I wish it were better.
Well, it isn't.
Because it's, what's the turning point there, though?
It's that it, it's, he does the thing where the, the main character, everybody loves the main character.
And I hate that.
Yeah.
He's only flawed in the sense that he's too good.
He is too good.
I don't, I don't like it.
I like that about him.
The point of Sherlock Holmes is he sucks.
Yes.
And he, but he's not cool and everybody loves him
and you can unlock your phone if you love him or whatever.
That's exactly right.
If he figures out that you love him, which is everybody.
Yeah.
What else we got, Mason?
Robert says,
Stranger Things season three on.
I got a Stranger thing from Harris who said it's Veclar related.
Okay, when did Stranger Things fall off?
And jump the shark.
They're saying the introduction.
Jump the demo, Gorgon.
Thank you.
You're welcome.
Which I guess if you were.
written the upside down it would be a
what's an upside down jump
call? A fall? A fall?
Yes. Falling over.
The interaction of Vecna he says, Harris says
might be a controversial one but the upside down was way more interesting
but it didn't have a stock villain and was just a land of cosmic horror.
Yeah, also it took it's so long in between shit.
Here's the thing as well. Season one
felt way more like
you know those old movies from the 70s and 80s
where kids are in it but they're not the stars?
Yes, absolutely.
You know, like, there's a, it's that movie, The Bad News Bears,
about the kids baseball team.
Walter, whatever is that.
Walter Mathau, but it's a Walter Mathau movie with some kids in it.
Yeah.
And that's how season one of Stranger Things felt.
It's more a Winona Ryder show.
Yeah, that's fair, yeah.
Than a kids show.
But then I guess, I guess they were like, well, we can get more mileage out of the kids
than we can Winona Ryder.
So let's make them, let's wildly increase their presence in this.
And I quite like two.
I remember two.
So like two to three, I guess.
Or maybe even beyond that.
But I didn't finish it because they broke up those last episodes and I just didn't come back.
Correct to us.
That is correct.
That is the correct response.
But it's also like, and I think somebody even mentioned it, there was like three years between some series.
And I'm kind of remember coming back to this.
You mentioned Dr. Hubert.
Yarn says, I've gone on for Doctor Who early in the seventh season, Dr. Matt Smith,
rides a dinosaur through a spaceship
and ever since then in my social circle
riding a dinosaur through a spaceship
as replaced jumping the shark.
Oh, so Yan is pronounced like Pan.
There you go.
Pan.
We got it.
Yarn is pronounced like Pan.
Again, there you go.
Again, that's a, you know,
again, when did Stephen Moffat start producing Doctor Who?
Because that's when it became,
oh, Dr. Hu, every, he's always the best.
He's the only fault is he's too good.
And he'll just be like, don't you even know who I am?
He's the center of the universe.
Doctor Who was better
When he was just a guy
Flying around
And he would solve a problem
And then he'd go see you later
Maniac behaviour
But then they were like
No actually doctor who's the centre of the universe
And he's a special time baby
It's a special time baby
And actually when the universe was created
They actually created Doctor Who first
Because he was even better than the universe or whatever
It's like I don't know
Stop it
He doesn't have to have
He's a guy
He's just stole the thing
He's like a time in space vagabond
He's just riding the rails
You know what I mean
I think it's okay
He's a time baby
I guess that's true
I guess that's true
Josh Wish says
The DC-EU killing off Superman
in its second film
Seriously killed all hypermementum
For that shared universe
I think yeah definitely
I mean that's not the only thing wrong
With Batman v Superman
But it's a strange choice
Yeah
I mean
We've talked to death
But Batman v Superman should have been like
Holy shit
This is the new new era of
But that's what they wanted
they wanted to, yeah, but I think, but it also should have been the fifth or sixth movie.
Yes.
But I think they were like, well, this is going to blow people's mind, so let's do it now.
Epic.
Like, you know, if, if they'd done a Batman solo movie and another Superman solo movie and they hadn't, you know, the box office dropped off.
Maybe we'd never get to Batman v. Superman.
Maybe that was the theory.
So they're like, do it now.
Yeah.
And that's, you know, that's what everybody wants.
But nobody, I don't want that.
I didn't want Batman versus Superman.
I want a Batman and Superman best friends.
Versus.
Versus a guy that they beat up.
And then they become best friends
because they beat that man up.
That's good.
Or woman.
Yeah,
but you're right.
Fighting each other should have been,
maybe an initial meeting,
but you have their epic showdown.
Movies down.
We've talked to death.
They punch for a bit and then their mates.
That's how that,
that's how that trope is supposed to work in superhero stuff.
But the stakes are different.
Like,
because in the Dark Night Returns,
obviously,
each other for decades.
Yeah.
And then when they finally fight, it's like, you know, this means something.
Yeah.
What else, Mason?
I'll go on from Daniel.
Go ahead.
He says, Family Matters Jump the Shark when the sitcom abandoned its grounded family-centric
premise to focus on Steve Urkel and his outlandish science fiction inventions.
Feel free to make fun of my name.
It's pronounced Phil's P.S.
Like you're trying to get Phil's attention secretly without anyone knowing.
But everyone gets it wrong.
Philips.
I can do it.
I can do it.
I can do it.
I know how to pronounce Philips.
Do they think we're stupid?
We are stupid.
It's pronounced Phil's PS.
No, it's not.
That's what he said.
Family matters.
He's unnecessarily complicated this.
I remember Family Matters.
It's a bad show.
Stefan O'Call.
An awful bad show.
I didn't watch enough family matters to have a pediod on it, man.
Uh-huh.
Yeah.
But it was meant to be about that cop from Die Hard after he killed that kid.
See, Bercl.
Yes.
And he was like, I'm going to, you know, restart my life after killing that kid.
But then.
The neighbor, the neighbor Steve Urkel became the focus, yeah.
I remember hearing it.
Because he was more, he had more gimmicks.
He had a breakout performance.
Yes.
But he also appeared in full house.
Someone reminded me recently that Steve Urkel's catchphrase was Gotany Cheese.
I was like, oh, you did have a couple of catchphrase.
Yeah, you'll say, did I do that?
Did I do that?
But he would often say Got any cheese.
Wow.
Like Gardney Cheese.
But what's the actor's name again?
Joliel White.
He talks about how like he was the star of the network and he had a basketball court.
And then he realized.
house or at the studio?
No, like the studio.
Then he realized that one day it had become like George Clooney's basketball court.
Like I'm over and played George Clooney's having a game on his basketball court.
He's like, well, it's my basketball court.
Oh, you're saying, I thought you meant it became like George Clooney's basketball court.
But it became George Clooney.
Yeah, it was on the air.
Wow, I didn't know that.
It was Jaliel White's basketball court.
That's the story I heard about it, in a TikTok short or whatever.
Wow.
Yeah.
Might have been just one of George Clooney's basketball.
to clean his famous pranks, though.
He does like a famous prank.
This is my basketball court and I'll kill you.
Prank.
Prank.
Michael says,
does the rise of SkyWalk account,
somehow Palpatine returned the stupid knife shaped like the Death Star
and a specific random point on the cliff
if they stopped carrying entirely up the episode 8 backlash.
I think Star Wars has, again, like Bond,
you could say it's the EWox,
you could say it's the prequels.
Certain aspects of the fandom will say,
we'll point to line.
You pick any point.
Some people will probably,
I bet if you looked hard enough in the end,
internet you would find somebody who's like Empire Strikes Back.
Oh yeah.
Are you kidding me?
You kidding me?
Why do they,
what do those things walk on legs?
Why don't they have treads?
They walk on legs.
I'm talking about the humans.
Yeah.
What are they doing?
What's their problem even?
Exactly.
Yeah.
And Loomis says in relation to that,
the book of Boba Fett ruined the ending of the Mandalorian season two in separate shows.
And also the point I remember people turning,
really turned on Disney plus Star Wars shows,
non-Andor.
Yeah, that is true.
Like it was that.
Yeah, and again, a different point in Star Wars
Jumping the Shark, etc.
How much of these CW have you seen?
A lot of people have mentioned Arrowverse.
Not enough to pick a point.
Scott has said that and so has.
Let's have a look here.
Joris also said that
the Flash and most other Arrowverse TV series
fell into this trap after season two or three.
Because the problem with those shows
is that you have, it's always an ensemble
and it's always one superhero guy
and then a bunch of non-powered support team
and they have to put a bunch of people back into jail or whatever.
Yeah.
And sooner rather than later,
all the supporting characters get superpowers.
Because again, it's that thing of like,
we've got 22 episodes of season.
Yeah.
What else do we do?
Okay, let's have that guy get superpowers
and he has to deal with that and, you know.
Absolutely.
Or you have to, I suppose they also have to be like,
well, how, why doesn't the, why doesn't the villain just show up and kill the supporting characters?
You know, that would work.
And then they're just like, well, we'll just say that guy's got superpowers as well.
Yeah.
That guy's bulletproof now.
Everyone's got ice powers.
Whatever, it's fine.
Scott mentioned.
The only thing that, the only novelty in that, yeah, I feel like the only novelty in that,
that whole universe that never jumped the shark was the fact that, um, um, um, Aris Wells, the, the, what's that guy's name?
Tom.
Bombadil.
Not Tom Bombadil.
But he just.
kept coming back as different characters. Oh, okay. Yeah, yeah, yeah, Tom Cavana. He just kept
coming back. He did like, probably like 15 different versions of that character, just over and over
and over again. That's fun. That is fun. That is fun. And he was in Ed to Ed, the TV show Ed,
if you remember that? Yeah, yeah. Scott says, honestly, Smallville, I've been watching for the first time
with my wife and holy shit, does it get bad quick. Spoilers for those who that care. Maybe didn't jump the
shark because it was always like this, but having Native American caves that are actually Kryptonian caves
a proper size of Calell was coming,
having artifacts that need saving
and a whole lot of junk like that is so boring.
Only on season seven so far,
it could get a little better, but wow.
And he's still not left Smallville,
so we aren't seeing him at the Daily Planet.
Instead, he's stuck with Chloe.
I mean, we've jumped around.
Yeah.
We've done episodes on it,
Caravan of garbage,
but for us, we don't,
we didn't live through it like you are currently living through it.
But I don't disagree.
I think it's that similar thing
with the Arrow thing of like,
maybe not because
Smallbya was Monster of the Week
and this person gets superpowers
then it becomes
Mythos
fucking whatever
Ollie says diehard
in fact to jump the shark
so badly that mates and I no longer
refer to something as jumping the shark
Is it something to do
with crashing out
taxi into a plane or whatever
We saw that a show of our movie franchise
was stood on the wing of a hovering jet
as it destroyed an overpass
Oh that was Diehard for
But it's also the crashing a plane
into a helicopter I guess
Which I don't even mind
Yeah
But there is the bit where he's on the fighter jet
and the whatever. That does happen in that...
In four?
Yeah.
Yeah.
I enjoyed four at the time.
And I think it's just because I loved the diehard franchise.
And I'm like, I've got to get more diehard.
Yeah.
But it is when he...
I don't mind it.
It's when he shaved the widows pick off.
That's, yeah, because then it's just Bruce Willis movie.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I mean, you know.
But he wouldn't have had a widow...
He wouldn't have had a widow's pick at that point.
No, but he would have.
Because he's too...
No, I mean, in real life.
No, he wouldn't...
That's what I'm saying.
That's what I'm saying. That's what I've been saying that for years.
they should have given him a fake widow's peak
or had him grow it back
for, you know,
wouldn't have taken long.
Would it take in a minute.
I don't think he would have had any
Widows Peak to grow.
I think he would have had a Widows Peak
Whig him.
And I understand like you could,
like, in the real...
Wiggos Peak.
Wiggos Bay?
No.
Anybody have a week in that show?
Probably.
I think that...
Look, I understand that in real life
that character
would have probably gone with the trend
and shaved his head
as opposed to having a widow's peak.
But I think the essential part
the character because he looks harried and annoyed all the time works better with the wiggos peak and shouldn't
have the henley and the whatever no i agree i agree i agree i agree man i agree man i agree man how much of the
walking dead have you watched joe has been mentioned the walking dead i couldn't yeah probably are they
talking about the negon bit the glen death i'll tell you this well again as someone who doesn't
i don't know how much of this is a spoiler because i don't watch the walking dead it's fine but joe has
said as someone who's watched almost the entire of the walking dead franchise fear the walking dead
season six ends with Texas being
nuked by a cult leader.
That season was actually pretty good, but that plot
point felt pretty shark jumpy.
I mean, there's been multiple points
in The Walking Dead. I didn't get
that far into fear the Walking Dead.
I guess the thing about that
is that
you can do anything in a universe where
society's completely collapsed, right?
Yeah. So is that... And again, maybe
maybe you feel, maybe you felt that
I think I saw a clip recently
and it was an episode of the Walking Dead
or Fear the Walking Dead or Walking Dead in Paris or whatever it was
Walking Dead in Paris
that was it was what if the characters
What if the zombie apocalypse hadn't happened
And several of the characters were just living their normal lives
That feels like a shark jumping moment to me
But it was a dream?
It was a dream I think yeah
Oh my God, who had the dream? Was it Laurie?
It's probably Negan
Nican had a dream about all his friends
Yep
And Glenn who his head caved in
Yep
People say it's the episode where Glenn gets his guts ripped out by zombies,
but he just climbed under a bin.
Okay.
And then what happened?
And then later he got away.
And then later he had caved his head in with a baseball.
Ah, so Glenn's never coming back.
No, they got him.
Who was Glenn?
Who was the active play?
Uh, Stephen Yun.
Ah.
Yeah.
So we got his break.
Ah, that's why, okay.
Why what?
That's where they're, that's the fun.
Invincible, whatever?
Invincible fun.
That's a fun.
It's invincible fun.
It's invincible fun.
I like to think our podcast is invincible fun.
I think it's cool and beautiful and whatever.
Fritz says Westworld.
I enjoyed the show overall and I'm a little sad not to get a conclusion.
However, if Jumping the Shark is about a gimmick to regain audiences,
then I think the last season, with all its twists, definitely count.
Yeah, I understand.
People say probably earlier than that even.
I don't know if Jumping the Shark is necessarily about regaining audiences.
It's about just keeping things going, right?
You're not trying to get more people necessarily.
Dave says Lost.
A few people have said Lost.
How much of Lost did you watch?
All of it.
Okay.
I mean, it just felt like, and I know there is a nostalgia for Lost and like, oh, it was ahead of its time in a lot of ways, which is true.
But it really did feel like they were making it up as they went along.
Which they were?
Which they probably were.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Just because it was all these mysteries and it was just like, none of this is becoming anything, you know?
Infinite loose ends.
How many, again, as someone who did watch it all the way through and I watched maybe one episode once.
Yeah.
How many actual loose ends were there by the end of the show?
I couldn't tell you.
I honestly, I don't know.
Maybe it was none.
I don't know.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Okay.
But you wouldn't be like 500 loose ends.
No, probably not.
Okay.
Yeah.
Robert says, even though I love the US House of Cars, the show definitely jumped
the shark once Frank became president.
And then they tried to do an episode, season as well, after Kevin Spacey was removed
for his alleged crimes.
And that thing that he did to your friend.
And the thing you did to my friend.
But it's a different name than the name we normally mentioned.
Collies, you have to believe that.
But, yeah, but all the people that had allegations of die.
Yeah, that's convenient, isn't it?
So that's fine.
Except for B.
Who's still alive, but he's hating life.
He is.
Yeah.
I had another one, but then I got derailed by.
Kevin Spacey
Yeah
Oh, Thomas just says Gleigh
I think Glea did all sorts of weird stuff
But uh
Yeah, you know what
Maybe it is, it's the point where it is
Endless Novelty
Yeah, okay
But again, I guess if you, if you
If your show is based on endless novelty
Then
Yeah
Millennium from RM Radcliffe
The X-Fill spin-off
An X-Vo spin-off that had one
Well, here's the thing, it wasn't an X-File spin-off
And then it became retroactively became an X-Files spin-off.
So initially it was about, it was...
Lawrence Pugh.
No.
What's his name?
He's Bishop.
Yeah.
Nelson Mandela.
It's not Nelson Mandela.
Malcolm McDowell.
No.
Lance Hendrickson.
Lance Henriksen.
Yeah, Henrickson.
So, because the thing was, the initial premise of that show was not that it was a supernatural show.
It was meant to be intentionally vague.
He works for a company called the Millennium Group.
And it's like a consulting group, but he can see through the eyes of killers,
like serial killers and maniacs or whatever.
So he gets, he gets brought him by the police to investigate the sort of stuff.
And in the initial interviews and stuff and media and press with Chris Carter,
who created the X-Files and in that show, he was like, just to be clear, this isn't
supernatural.
It's some sort of gift he has and maybe it's intuition or whatever.
But he can be, he's like, I see what the killer sees or whatever.
And then in, and there was three seasons.
And then in the second one, it's just like, oh, yeah, no, it's, it's demons and that.
It's actually, it is, there's a lot of supernatural stuff going on.
And then the Millennium Group was actually going to, because...
This is exactly what Aaron Radcliffe said.
Then season two got a new showrunner, but the show became a god demons and ghosts.
Did it get a new, okay.
Yeah, and for the third and final season to have another hard pivot to return to being grounded,
but our protagonists has rejoined the FBI and now sad and depressed.
I wonder why the show was canceled, they said.
Yeah.
There were a lot of fun episodes, though.
Yeah.
especially in that demon season.
But then at the end, then they wrapped it up.
There was an X-Files episode called Millennium.
Because the Millennium Group wanted to end the world on January 1st, 2000 or whatever,
like at the turn of the Millennium.
Millennium.
Exactly.
We loved the Millennium back then.
We loved Millennium bugs.
Yeah, we did, didn't we?
Other stuff.
I might have to wrap this up, Mason, to move to the next segment, though.
Which is us getting something to eat?
Yeah.
Maybe we should come back to this.
Maybe someone could just write a list of the things we've talked about.
Us? Could it be us?
We've already done it.
But...
That wouldn't be very big and bold and beautiful and calm and cool.
I agree.
Damn, very good.
All right, Mason, let's go next thing with the show, but what is it?
You've seen the movie Mutiny?
I did, actually, yeah.
What were you saying?
What we read and what we're going to read.
Mutiny.
And other things, probably.
Other things, but...
Man, I love TV shows.
I love TV shows going off the rails.
I've got to say, if we're going to do a summary,
I love it.
It's not my money.
It's not my money.
and it's all in the past.
It is, isn't it's over?
It's over.
Just quickly, does that discourage you from watching your show?
If they're like, it gets shit after season two.
Because often if I hear that, I'm like, well, fuck it then.
And I just won't watch it.
No, not necessarily.
I mean, I guess no.
If you watch just season one, you'll be happy and then leave.
I think it depends on the show.
I think if they're like, oh, it's a great, like, Westworld is a great example.
Like, if they're like, it's a great self-contained first season.
Just watch that.
Don't worry about it.
Yeah.
I think if the opinion is like, well, it lost focus after season two or whatever, that's a show.
I don't want to finish.
But if they're like, it got crazy.
Yeah.
Like they just threw everything in the wall, I got to see it.
You got to see it, man.
They just did musical episodes and they did puppet episodes and whatever.
I'm like, well, I got to see it now.
You got to see it, man.
I got to see it.
Do you want to talk about the movie Mutiny, but not that much because it's not that interesting?
Yeah, let's do that.
What are we reading then?
Okay.
I'm doing a thing.
Section of the show, Mason.
Absolutely.
The movie Mutiny, Jason Statham.
You better believe it.
Let me stop you right there.
I watched 10 to 15 minutes, maybe 12 minutes of The Runner with Gal Gadot.
Okay.
What did she think of it?
Because you were watching it was terrible.
She said it was terrible.
But she's in that movie.
I know.
Wow.
What's the premise?
I don't really know.
Because it's free on something.
Prime.
A kid gets, it's got like a 9% of Rotten Tomatoes.
Not that that necessarily means anything.
Yeah.
The kid gets kidnapped.
something in cyber terrorism? I don't know.
Okay. But it's also interesting that this movie The Runner is coming out.
And then I think next week the movie Runner is also coming out, someone with Alan Richardson.
Yeah.
We didn't talk about this, but there was a trailer for a movie called May Day. Did you see that?
It actually looked quite good. It's the Ryan Reynolds one. Set in the 80s?
Oh yeah, that's apparently all right. It's pretty fine.
It's reviewing pretty well.
He's Ryan Reynolds and some old guy. And the old Kenneth Ranner.
Yes. Kenneth Rana. That actually looks quite good.
Yeah. Yeah. God.
He's always running around.
He's always brannering about.
He's always brannery about.
What are we talking about?
Nothing.
People should know that in between the last segment and this segment, a couple of things have
happened.
We went out to lunch, so that's good.
Where do we go?
We tried to go somewhere good, but what happened?
Everything was closed because it was like two in the afternoon.
Also, we're recording this on Friday afternoon.
So if like some big information comes out about Avengers Doomsday or Tom Holland
explodes or something over the weekend, we didn't get to it.
We missed it.
Sorry, we'll get to it later.
And it wasn't important enough for us to come back here.
It wasn't important.
But also you've received in the mail some parts of your...
Called Pantth.
Your upcoming Halloween costume.
I got what you're spoiling this, basically.
I didn't spoil anything.
I wasn't going to give it away.
But what I need you, I need people to know,
that James is wearing, he's switched into like this Henley.
Yeah.
And he's buttoned it all the way to the top.
It's a button.
And the shoulders haven't really settled in yet.
So you look like you're, you...
It's supposed to be a loose fit.
I know. I know it's a costume. Don't tell me how to Cobbant.
It's just you look a little bit like...
Or whoever I'm dressing as.
You look like you're on the bridge of the Enterprise.
You look like you're wearing like a next generation Star Trek uniform.
Because it's just slightly...
I took the pants off.
Excuse me?
It's just warmer. It's a warm...
It's a... What's it called? What's this all waffle?
A waffle. It's got a waffle, yeah.
I'm just saying.
It's disrespectful.
I know. That's why I said it.
Just letting you know. I haven't changed.
Yeah.
I'm still big and bold and calm and beautiful or whatever.
we said from earlier.
But I'm not anymore.
Well, then this doesn't count.
You're a menace.
We have to do it again in the episode.
You're a menace and a mess is what you are.
No, no.
Yes.
Anyway, the runner.
I didn't like it.
Okay, terrific.
From what I saw of it and what she had,
Gyalgadots now like, I love AI or working with AI.
Oh, yeah, all right.
And the Galgadot, have a good opinion on anything.
Anyway, so.
It's too late.
We watched the run.
We watched Sideways Die Hard.
Yeah, we both watch.
the movie Mutiny, which is
it's sideways die hard.
It is sideways diehard, it's true.
The new Jason Stafer movie.
Cole Reed, what's the story?
What do you think of the story wants?
It's Cole Reed.
And he's good at chess and having a dead dad.
So he was, so he was,
he's the bodyguard and the driver
of the one good billionaire.
A self-made billionaire.
Self-made good guy billionaire.
Who does shipping.
Shipping, but he's selling his shipping company.
but then he drives the billionaire into a trap and the billionaire dies.
On purpose.
No, he doesn't do it on purpose, but I mean, you really drop the ball.
Yeah, bad.
Like, yeah, just drive into a blind alley with, like, it's clearly blocked at one end
and the other end will soon be blocked.
That's right.
In your non-bulletproof car.
You're non-bulletproof car.
But then the billionaire gets killed and Jason Statham gets away.
He gets framed.
He gets framed, but then he's like, uh-huh, one of these guys who killed the billionaire.
He works on one of these ships.
And he looks like me.
And he looks close enough.
He's bald.
So I'm going to get on the ship and I'm going to investigate the mystery.
And I'm going to kill a bunch of guys in fun ways.
Yeah.
And he does.
It's pretty good kills, isn't it?
Yeah.
What's interesting is this is yet another in the line of Jason Statham is a weird loner.
Yeah.
Like, why is he stepped into this?
I guess, I would guess, if he would have been interview about this, it'd be like it's a masterless samurai kind of situation.
Oh, because he lost his dad.
It's always that vibe.
Yeah.
That's not funny, but it is funny.
No, but it's not a real...
What's interesting...
But yeah, it's just...
He's always the last...
His dad and him were both special forces or something.
Yeah, that's right.
And then his dad saved him or something.
There's a very funny montage bit
where somebody's looking up his secret.
He's talking about the bit where he's wearing a bobby's house?
Yeah, there's a minute...
In all these movies, he's like, he's a weird loner,
and then he turns out to be a...
They go through his background,
and they're like, this isn't just any...
This guy's a superman.
This guy's a super sexy.
This guy's so special ops he could be in a Stephen Moffat production.
So it's revealed that he's carried.
It's not a reveal.
We know, obviously.
But he was a cop and then he was a Marine and then he was a cop again.
And then he became something else.
And then his dad, they died in an operation.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Which doesn't...
A father's son.
Doesn't relate to anything.
No, but then he ended up working for a billionaire who he's...
saved at one point a few years earlier.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And the booed has a...
All that is to say is it's just not very interesting.
No.
There's a decent kills.
It's okay.
Villains whatever.
So I only saw this because Vince Mancini of the content report
for the film drunk reviewed it and was like,
this is one of his better ones.
No.
I'll check it out.
That's interesting.
I don't think it is.
I saw it recently,
I think I talked about last week,
Jason Statham's like, I know my range
and I know what I'm doing that.
But I think he's better than...
He's better than this?
I mean, also, like, he's good in this because he is very good at this and he does convincing action and this kind of acting.
But we've seen him do comedy and other bits and diving and modelling with other bits and pieces.
But he could do something else.
Yeah, I mean, he was funny and spy.
Exactly.
And he was personal.
Well, that's the thing, because I don't know why he's sort of reduced himself to this sort of monk who is also a super secret, super assassin guy.
Like in his, like in his first appearance, I think in a movie was Lockstock.
Yeah.
And he's fun in that and he's kind of, you know...
He's not a super sexy whatever guy in that.
No, but he's got fun attitude and he's kind of like a, like a, you know, a street hustler kind of character.
That works for him as well.
And then he was, what's his name?
Oily Driver.
He was an oily driver for three, two or three movies.
Three movies at least.
He was oily driver.
And then he was Hobbes or sure.
Yeah, he was.
That's good.
There's a moment also in this movie where he's given a gift by his billionaire boss.
What is it?
He gives him a Rolex submarine.
which is a sort of iconic
Steve McQueen
Very expensive one
Probably at some point
No he did
He wore one in his last movie
The Hunter
Like not that long ago then
The 80s
Steve McQueen
Oh yeah
I was thinking of Paul Newman
Yeah
Yeah but he just
What I thought was interesting
Is he gets it
And he just immediately puts it on
Like he doesn't have to take
Any of the links out of the bracelet
And so I looked it up
So the the circumference of a Rolex
Submariner bracelet
Unsized is 8 inches
So they're saying he's got an 8-inch circumference wrist.
I believe that.
I believe it, too.
Just kidding.
I don't.
Well, maybe he's a billion any...
A 5-foot-4 man with an age.
Nobody's saying he's 5'4.
Let's check celebrity heights.
Oh, my God.
Here we go.
No, let's not do it.
I reckon he's 5-7.
Yeah, he might be, yeah.
We know our friend Hollywood Pete's.
Yeah.
He worked with him on a production.
They did the bank job.
And Hollywood Pete's wife was very excited to meet Jason Stathen.
She's relatively tall.
And then met him and was like,
Oh.
Wow.
Not in terms of like, oh, he's short.
According to AMDB, 5 foot 10.
Fuck off.
No way.
No fucking way.
Wow.
Wow.
The real height.
Because there's also this famous photo of it's from Hobbs and Shore.
Right.
And it's him and the rock standing side by side.
And they're nearly the same height.
That is clearly a forced perspective thing.
Absolutely.
That is crazy.
Yeah.
God.
They're saying, even they're saying like 5-8.
I'm like, I don't believe.
leave it.
No way, man.
Celebrity height says 5'8 and 3 quarters.
Nah.
You don't reckon?
Didn't you say 5'8?
I guess 5'7.
Maybe even shorter.
Okay, right.
But we like his work.
I do.
I like him.
Even though from a height that's week, gives a lot.
But you have to lie.
You have to lie.
He's him and the rock actually standing together.
Oh yeah, that makes sense.
Yeah.
But the rocks are that tall?
The rocks are pretty two.
It's like 6.3 maybe.
Okay.
Right.
At least, maybe 6.
That's pretty good.
Hobbs and Shaw?
And this is a kind of.
No, they stopped making those.
They stopped making them?
Yeah, so some of the action is pretty solid, I think.
Yeah, and it's not like a...
Is machine getting people in the head?
Pretty good.
That's close.
So this is directed by Jean-François Richet.
Yeah.
Who direct, I think, directed another.
He directed Assault on Precinct 13.
That's good?
From 2005.
It was a good movie, maybe?
He also, his previous movie was Plain, which is the Gerard Bar.
It was on a plane.
And it was written by Lindsay, Michelle and J.P. Davis, who I think has written a bunch of Statham movies.
I think it's like his go-to.
So he direct, he, I know what, he wrote the contractor, which is a Chris Pine movie.
And Plain and Mutiny.
These are all good movies.
Yeah, I agree.
Yeah.
Oh, did you see, I just came up my feed.
Paul Meskell was blamed by Ridley Scott for the failure of Galadietta 2 for not being
masculine. Now I read that.
Is that actually what he said? Well, no, here's the thing
because his rep, that's what I saw initially
and then after that his rep denied that.
Okay. So,
two options here is that
somebody's claimed to have said that
because they've got it out for Ridley Scott or whatever.
Or he has actually said that and his rep's like,
we don't need any bad publicity right now. The dogs does.
It's not doing well. Yeah. So let's say he
didn't say that. Yeah. But also he
if that is true, my understanding
is he he booked Paul Meskell on a Zoom call.
Oh, okay.
Like for gladiating.
He didn't even do a screen test or a chemistry test or anything.
He just had a chat with him on Zoom and went, yeah, you'll.
You could be gladiated.
So like, if anything, that's your fault.
And that movie's bad.
Yeah.
It's not just Paul Mescal.
But I mean, I think, I remember you did say at the time, like he doesn't, he doesn't
really.
No, it's not as interesting a performance as Russell Crow.
It's also not as good a movie by like a long way.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
But I do like Paul Maskell a lot.
He's Paul McCartney at the moment.
Hello.
I was in Wings.
I'm Paul McCartney.
I'm Paul Meskul.
I'm Paul McCaskol.
Yep.
What am I doing?
I don't know, but also in this version,
in this version, Paul McCartney from the Beatles was in wings first.
Yeah, man, it was in wings first.
I've come on stuck in time.
Ringo, help me.
I went to a big vortex and I ended up back in time.
But I've been in wings.
I wrote the theme to live and that die.
Yeah.
And now I'm in the Beats.
for the first time.
Oh no.
Yeah, it's true.
Do you think Paul McCutney was in Wings first
and then he was in the Beatles?
Do you think that would,
do you think Wings would be more fondly remembered?
No.
You think the second band
would have been the one that people remember?
Ah, the Beatles, yes.
Yes, I do think that.
I don't know, man.
Have people seen the movie role models?
I don't know if they have.
It's the, it's the...
With the...
Yeah.
It's a, it's a naughty's comedy movie.
It's a lot, yeah.
It's probably got some stuff in it that has an age.
Yeah, probably.
I would get it.
guess so and they're two guys and they work for an energy drink company and they get they
commit some crimes and they get forced to be role models for like troubled kids or whatever
yeah but there's a running gag in the movie because paul rudd's character sort of against type
he's very up he's very uptight and he doesn't he doesn't like anybody being wrong and he does
you know and he doesn't like he doesn't like anything really yeah he doesn't like mistakes
or anything but there's a running gag where people around him are like oh man i love wings i love
that wing song, love take me down to the streets.
And everybody's like, and he's like, that's not a wings song, it's not.
It's nothing.
But, and then that recurs throughout the movie, and the end titles are over the full
version of love takes me down to the streets, which is a fake wing, because everybody
does fake Beatles songs, but nobody does a fake wing song.
It's, you know, and it sounds like a weak song.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Anyway, yeah.
Anyway, Mutiny was all right, wasn't it?
Yep.
I, yeah.
Uh, I wouldn't put it.
it is top five or even maybe top ten.
I put death race above this.
You know what I also, because when I got home, I'm like,
I'll watch another, because I missed a couple of stadium.
Which one did you watch?
The mechanic too.
No, I watched some of Shelter, which is again, it's exactly the same premise.
He's a, he's a lone loner.
He's a loner and he lives on an island and his former Marine friend or whatever
keeps delivering him stuff.
And then the Marine's daughter gets.
stranded on the island he has to protect it from special ops, black ops, Marines.
But isn't he also a special ops?
Yeah, that's how he's so good at defending her.
They don't know that.
Then they look him up to doing it.
They're like, oh my God, this guy, this guy saved the queen.
That's right.
Nuclear disaster.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
We didn't know he was this guy.
But then I watched about, I watched like 20 minutes and I'm like, I'll watch the rest of this later.
It's fine.
You're not going to go out of you.
It's fine.
I might.
Probably not, though.
Probably not.
I'm like, I've had enough of this.
Yeah.
I've had enough of Jason Statham as weird monk.
he's just good at killing
but he can't kill anymore
but now he has to kill
for a friend
yeah
we could talk about lanterns episode three
if you wanted to
I should say mutiny
the not a love interest
but a sort of a
the female
protagonist in the movie
who gets to the ship
in a different circumstance
and she's from the mummy
and she's malignant
she's malignant
she's mrs malignant
she's miss malignant
but she's also Mrs. Stan
because she's Sebastian Stan's wife
oh my god
yeah what a dream
Right?
For you.
I agreed.
And me.
It's a dream we have together.
Every night.
We lucid dream that, don't we?
That's right.
We, at great expense, we had the Inception machine built.
Yep. And we plug ourselves in.
We tried the minority report pool, but we needed a third guy.
That's right.
Sebastian Stan, but he wouldn't do us.
So we said jokes on you, Sebastian, Stan.
We'll get you with the inception machine, man.
That's right.
Well, we imagine you married to your wife, which you are.
Landon's episode 3 is a flashback episode
Full spoilers
It tells the origin of Kid John Stewart
Once again,
the current episode of Landtons,
but we're late.
Lantins,
but we're late,
good segment.
Yeah.
So this is the one,
this is the one.
I mean,
I'm always like,
I want to see more green lantern stuff,
obviously.
Yeah.
Because this is fully flashback.
Some people said this is like a,
like a speed bump episode or a,
yeah,
because it's a diversion.
But it's from the main,
but it's the flashback episode.
And it's,
we see, you know, we see what we long suspected that his parents are insane.
Yes.
And they groomed him to be.
And the ring came to his dad and his reason behind him turning it down.
Yeah.
Makes sense and whatever.
Yeah.
I thought it was great.
I really liked it a lot.
Yeah.
Explains why he is the way he is.
Yes.
Yeah.
But I am because this coming episode, the episode that's probably already out if you're
listening to this.
That's right.
Is it the Guy Gardner episode?
Yeah.
I think there's that and there's also we're going to get more sinestro.
Oh, right.
Which are, or Sinestro.
How do you say it?
I always said sinister.
Until someone else said it.
The movie came, the original movie came out and then I'm like, oh, sinestro, is it?
Oh.
Speaking of Beatles, Mason, at Big Sandwich.com or Patreon to Com slash Mr. Son and movies,
but Time Crapshire was from 1963.
Oh, yeah.
That's the episode this week, if you are interested.
Yeah.
Are you interested in that?
Yes.
Yes.
Great.
Ha-z-ah!
That's great.
That's late Latin talk.
Late Land Talk.
What a...
We'll keep doing this.
Yeah, we'll keep doing this,
or we'll do a wrap up at the end.
Let's do a wrap up at the end.
Let's have a time of letters.
This is the letter segment every day.
New letters name?
Excuse me?
Unless somebody...
It won't be unless somebody puts that on YouTube.
Someone independent of us.
Somebody will do that, but could you put some music to it?
Or maybe it uses a different voice?
Like a better voice?
Like Paul McCartney?
Oh, yeah.
Yeah.
Just think it'd be a good idea.
Don't use AI!
Get Paul McCartney to do it.
Get him to do it if you know it.
Get Paul McCartney on cameo to do it.
Yeah.
It's insist your personal friend Paul McCartney, start a cameo account.
Yes.
And then before he does anybody else's cameos,
because you'll presumably get millions of cameo requests,
get him to do ours.
Yeah.
Where he sings that letters theme that James just did.
That's right, whatever it was.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Make sure it's big and bold and brave and calm and cool.
It will be.
It will be.
Yeah, I agree.
But in the meantime, here's the regular letters.
Yeah.
The classic one was
Letters
Oh letters
We love you
Some letters
They're only
A take my
I think I could
An everyday outfit
I think it just needs
Some settling in
I don't think that's right
I think it's perfect as is
It's a little
It's a little raised on the shoulders
That's what I'm saying
But uh
And look at this
Oh wow
How did that happen
I listened to it the other day
Oh okay
I was like holy shit
Your phone is listening
Because it says
Suggested video
love take me down to the streets.
If you don't want to reach the show,
where love can take you down to the streets.
You can send Mason a Gmail at weekly planetpot at gmail.com
or in the planet broadcasting great mates group every week.
What is there, Mason?
There's a thread.
Oh, yeah.
And you're going to do a thread.
Tell me, Mason, what's a letter that you've got?
Here's an email from Nile or possibly Nile.
But it's spelled in the way of that One Direction guy.
Nile.
Nile.
Nile.
I don't know.
Nile.
Subject line, being terminally online.
Hey guys, just reaching out because I'm trying to get rid of toxic social media apps.
Do you guys find it difficult because you might want to stay away from social media
but your job requires you to have some knowledge of pop culture, which is usually communicated on social media?
Well, first of all, you've been banned from Twitter for crypto scams, as we know.
Yeah, but it's fine.
How do you feel not being on Twitter?
I wasn't even using it.
Because Twitter is even worse.
It doesn't change my day at all.
I do like, the thing about Twitter is I do like scrolling to see, like, again, like, you know,
Hollywood News reports and what have you.
But at the same time, if I click on anything, I'm like, oh, yeah, there's a reason I don't click on anything.
Yeah, it's right.
And all the comments, comments aren't funny anymore.
Everything's bots now.
Yeah.
Everything's dead internet now.
Exactly.
Horrible fucking platform.
Yeah.
And it's, who cares if it's gone.
I'll only probably be annoyed if somebody good overtakes Twitter and it gets better again,
but I just don't think that'll happen.
No, no, no, no.
Even if somebody does take it over again.
It sucks.
Irreparably broken.
Exactly.
And again, why can I not do crypto scams, but other people can't?
That's a great point.
It's ridiculous.
Yeah.
I do like Instagram though
And I quite like
Maybe it's just the Reddit's that I'm on
Yeah I don't mind it either
If I'm like
If I'm like oh I don't know
I don't want to train or something like that
And I'm like
I want to look at something interesting
I'll just open Reddit
And like they'll just be a suggested whatever
I'm like oh that's quite interesting
It might be you know
There's a subredit for Melbourne where we live
And it's like oh this interesting happening in Melbourne
I'm like that is pretty interesting
Is it open it and it's a picture of you?
Never
On the toilet
No
Sorry, I spoke too soon, yes.
Wow, and that is, that's a Melbourne icon right there, I'll tell you that much.
Yeah, the thing is, whenever I get recommended something like heinous in Reddit,
I make sure I just wipe it from my feet so I won't see it again.
Like what, what are you getting recommended?
You know, every now and then it'll be like, I don't know, some terrible reality TV show.
Oh, I see, right.
Or like pop culture scandal stuff.
I thought you meant like a video of somebody getting hit by a bus.
Yeah, or sometimes some mantis fish show.
shit or whatever.
You know what I'll,
I'll wipe that.
So it's,
you know,
it's an echo chamber for me.
Also,
I like,
I like,
just an echo chamber.
Yeah,
I like Instagram
because it's cool,
pictures of cool stuff.
Yeah.
But I'm like,
I think it's probably,
it's probably
melting my brain
in some slightly more suffer away.
I mean,
there's only so many pictures
of yourself
on the toilet you can look at,
right?
Not me.
No.
Is it the same picture?
Is there only so many pictures
of the Mona Lisa
you could look at James?
Yes.
Really?
Just that one?
What would you be looking at?
I don't know.
Anyway, get off the internet, as what he's saying?
Yeah, get off the internet, yeah.
What's the suggestion?
Yeah.
Yeah, I am too online.
Go to, go to, if you, yeah, just put your, before you go to bed, put your phone somewhere else.
Yeah.
Exactly.
Yeah.
Screenshot the picture of Nick Mason on the toilet so you can look at that whatever you want.
Exactly.
And then that's all you do.
Do it the old-fashioned way.
Print it out in one of those little photo frames put it by the side of your bed.
Or, better yet, find out where he is, take a polaroid of him on the toilet.
Sure.
Sure?
Permission?
No.
Someone would get you.
Yeah, I know.
Follow you into a public toilet, polaroid over the top of the stall.
Yeah.
Get your midwife.
Is that what you want?
It's not what I want.
I need to be clear.
I don't want that.
Quinton says, in fact, I would say, don't follow me into the toilet.
toilet. Even if you're not going to do that.
Yeah, wait for him outside. Yeah, wait for me outside.
Yeah. I'll happily interact with you
outside of the toilet.
Quentin says,
what do you think they're doing for the Dungeons and Dragon sequel now?
So nothing so.
All right.
It's not going to be at Paramount, but the people,
the guys behind it.
A couple of bros, a couple of dudes.
I don't think it's going to happen.
The dudes are behind Game Night?
Yeah, exactly. I think if it was going to happen,
it would have happened.
I don't think Paramount would have let it go if they,
was viable,
if they considered it.
I would love it to be.
It's an amazing movie.
Yeah.
But I just don't think so unfortunate.
There is a Netflix show in the works still.
Okay.
I think probably what will happen is that the company that owns Dungeons and Dragons
will get purchased by somebody else.
Isn't that already happening?
It's always happening.
Because they think they can monetize it to it.
Yeah, it'll happen.
Once there's new management on board, they'll try it again.
Who owns it now?
Is it Wizards of the Coast?
Something like that.
Yeah.
Or Hasbro, I don't know.
Oh, yeah, no, it probably is.
Well, I bet Hasbro owns Wizards the Coast.
And Dragon.
I bet they do.
Wizard of the Coast required it, and then Hasbro purchased it.
Okay.
So I, Hazbro purchased Wiz of the Coast, so you're correct.
Making DEDA a subsidiary brand under Hasbro.
Ooh, terrific.
That is terrific.
So I guess Paramount only had distribution and probably financed some of it.
Great.
Got another letter?
Yep, this is from Michael.
Yeah?
Subject line.
I'm having a good time.
All right.
Dear James and Mason,
I wanted to let you know
that I've only watched
the first Resident Evil movie
but I've been enjoying
your caravan of garbage marathon.
Thank you.
It's like I get to watch them
without the responsibility
of actually watching them.
Well, we didn't have that opportunity.
In the last video, you said
if you're still watching this,
you're probably not having a good time.
And I wanted to assure you
that I'm still having a good time, thank you.
These are Michael.
I'm shocked
because the fourth one,
which is released on Thursday,
is doing even better than the third one.
Is that because they've changed the rules in terms of views?
Well, that's the thing it might be.
Yeah, but that was also, I've got to pinpoint the exact point that that happened
because I think that was already happening.
Oh.
But, like, the viewer retention is still good.
I don't know.
So people are enjoying these.
I can't believe we've already done four of these.
I come to those four out already.
Right.
Fuck.
Too more, though.
We thought we were ahead of the curve.
Yeah.
We recorded a bunch in a row real quick.
And we're like, we'll never have to record another caravan of garbage video ever in our life.
We should specify.
We didn't record like in the same day.
We watch it and we record it.
Yes.
And then we watch everyone.
We don't bulk them like.
It's too confusing.
Yeah.
Especially something like Resident Evil.
Yeah, right.
Impossible.
What was the question?
I'm still having a good time.
Oh, great.
That's all.
Not a question.
Not a question at all.
Paul says, this is directed at you.
Is Mason really bad at video games or does you just say that?
P.S.
Can I take a photo of him on the toilet?
I don't think he said that last part at all.
am I bad at video games?
I don't think so
No, but I'm bad at playing video games
while talking about video games
I would say the two of us
you're much better at that
so that makes a better video
Yeah, okay, yeah
I'd just be like, huh, uh,
Like if I'm playing,
I mean, it's been a while since I've played a video game
that requires like reflexes or whatever
Yeah,
but I'm okay with them when I'm just at home
playing the video game
But if I had to be like doing it
I couldn't do one of those live streams
or whatever,
Twitch or whatever,
I'm playing and commenting
because I don't have the brain capacity
And when we do them from never go back
or whatever.
I've been practicing the video game.
So it's not like that you're bad at and I'm good at it.
It's just that I've sunk time.
But you've come up with a better system because now when we...
Smoking cigarettes.
That's the perfect system.
Yeah.
But when we...
That's the perfect system that the architect designed in the Matrix movies.
That's the matrix he should have made.
Just give everybody cigarettes from the start.
The system now is you...
We have a little time when we're covering a video game and never go back
where we talk about it in advance.
Little chat.
So we can actually have an actual...
conversation about the game before we get into it and it's just like huh yeah we were
it's hard to remember stuff because we recorded we just recorded star was episode one racer yes a game
impossible to talk about while you're playing it because you're going 700 miles per hour exactly
into a canyon filled with both sorts of loops who knows what yeah yeah and big jump and that thing
the sarahawk so the sarah like that we sort of briefly saw yeah uh so you're not bad at video games
is what you're not great at video games certainly
I don't think you are.
I'm glad our industry is just yap, yap, yapping and I'm not playing video games on a screen.
I don't understand how people will even review video games every week.
Yeah, right.
How do you get enough?
So much time.
Yeah.
It's such a time sync.
Exactly.
Yeah.
I got nothing.
I guess you just look at it and guess.
Yeah, that's what I do.
That's what I do for a gal.
You know, what you could do is you could just, what you could just, what you could do is when the game company sends you the game, they could just send you some opinions.
Yeah, that's easy.
the game and then you just read those out.
Well, that's a good point as well because they do send them early.
But even then you still have to play it through.
No, no, James, you're not listening.
Oh, they send you.
They send you the opinions and you just say those opinions if those are your opinions
and they send you cashola.
Oh.
You know?
And what if you don't say the opinions?
Would they take a photo of you doing something?
It certainly could.
They certainly could if they'd followed you somewhere.
This is okay.
It would be okay.
It would be okay.
Even if you're in the marketing department of a video game company, I don't
think you should be following me into a toilet.
You?
No one's even talking about you.
You don't even review video games.
Well, you know why I don't because of the danger.
Do you have another email?
Yeah, this is from Thomas.
Thomas.
Hi, James and myself.
I've been into it.
Let me know if we know this already, James.
I've been informed by a friend working on the next season of a fairly well-known fantasy
show involving a large man and a bald boy.
I'm assuming that's...
A bald?
Oh, Craig Austin.
Wait, is he bald?
No, is it, um...
Is it Dunkin Egg?
Dunkin Egg, of course. Sorry, yeah.
I've been informed by a friend working on this show
that George R.R. Martin is actively involved
in the writing of the next Bond film.
Really?
I mean, they're working close enough to that world
that I take what they told me seriously.
I don't know whether GRRM is writing the whole screenplay,
contributing the story, doing a rewrite, or something else,
only I was told he is definitely involved.
As far as I can tell, this hasn't been reported publicly,
and Stephen Knight is still the announced writer.
But if GRRRM, GRM, really, is involved,
with Bond, what do you make of it?
I mean, he hasn't just written fantasy.
No, he's written other things before.
He's written other stuff as well.
Yeah.
I'm most notably known for Wild Cards, which is a superhero university created, which
was books, and then it became a comic book.
And, yeah, I know, right?
Yuck.
Books.
Yeah, yeah, books.
But maybe this is, and again, this might also be lice.
Yeah.
It's interesting.
But I mean, also, like, maybe he's just looking for something that he isn't bored to death
with.
Absolutely.
I read somewhere on, speaking of social media that we hate,
it was a fantasy author saying that Gurum, George R. Martin,
has sort of tanked the market for long fantasy epics.
Right.
Because nobody is willing to commit to a new,
if somebody's like this, I'm going to do a five-part big fantasy epic.
Nobody's willing to commit to the first one because they're like,
well, they're just going to George R.R. Martin and never finish the last one.
So I'm not going to bother.
That's really interesting.
Yeah, absolutely.
But I wouldn't, I mean, this, this is interesting.
And I would not be surprised if this turns out to be true.
Yeah, absolutely.
Just because maybe it sounds like he's just like, I've got to get,
I got to get something else under my belt.
Otherwise, I'm never going to be able to get back in the mindset to do.
I'm never, I'm not going to feel refreshed enough to finish this book that I can't finish for some reason.
Book, like books, multiple.
I think also like, maybe he just doesn't want to at this point.
He's bored of it.
And he's rich?
He's rich.
He's been living in Westeros for long enough.
The show finished.
Yeah.
You know?
Yeah.
Does anyone care?
Maybe he's just like, yeah, that kind of is how the books were going to finish.
Yeah.
I would have made it longer.
But that's it and that's fine.
And I get to see it in glorious high definition.
So there's two more planned and he started in 96.
Okay.
And the last one was 2011.
All right.
All right.
Well, maybe he's just, yeah, like maybe he's just like,
I got to shake this out, do something.
else interesting. Maybe he's just in there being like, remember that time Bond, he drove the car
off the bridge and then he spun the, and there was a slide whistle. That's crazy. Well,
remember to put a slide whistle in. Anyway, there you go. Cool, that's interesting. Hot scoop.
That might be a hot scoop. Might be. Might be hot scoop. And you know the rules, media outlets.
Yep. That's, it's a hot scoop. If you say that you heard that here, you have to say it's the
weekly planet podcast, hot scoop or shot of poop segment. That's correct. And if you don't do that,
people will leave comments.
Yeah.
Which we don't normally encourage,
but this case we do.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And at worst,
they'll follow you into the toilet.
Yes,
which we don't encourage,
but it will happen.
Yeah,
it's going to happen.
It's got to happen to us.
It's got to happen to you.
That's right.
Not me,
you're sorry.
Go on from Oli.
Do you think certain reviewers
shouldn't review movies and genres
they don't like?
Ask because I just read the review
for the new fall too
that was written by someone
who hates all horror movies
and specified the opening paragraph
that they hate any movie
that tries to make,
to make them feel tense.
They then proceeded to
Savage the movie, which I saw an early preview while back, and it's pretty good.
And it made me wonder why they watched it at all.
They're going to crap all over it.
So fall tour is about the person that's going to fall.
Twice.
They're going to fall again.
Yeah.
Well, he's great.
You go.
Oh, I was just going to say, oh, don't worry about it.
You go.
I mean, to me, looking at that review was like, well, that review was like from a person
who's not going to like this, so you can't take that into account.
Yeah.
That review, I think, like, I haven't read it.
Could also be fake.
Could be fake review.
It's from the perspective of the.
somebody of like that's what they enjoyed their movies.
And if you line up with,
if you have a similar opinion, then that is valid.
Yeah, it's not. I always say, you know,
find some reviewers
that perhaps line up with your taste
and then, you know, follow them.
To the toilet. To the toilet, if you must.
But I don't,
I guess
the objection I would have to that review
if in fact it is real.
Is that
you, I think it's totally fine if somebody goes, well, I'm not
into horror and I went into this and I found it surprisingly good or I wasn't for me or what have
you like as somebody who you know you might not be into horror it's good to have a fresh perspective
or what have you or if you are into horror I think it's good to have this perspective of someone
who might be like you know you might be uh maybe you're bored of you know you love horror movies
but you've kind of bored of the whole genre and you see a perspective of someone who's just
going into one and you go oh you know that's it's interesting that they're amazed by it or
they, if they're not part of the horror, you know, community, they might look at this and go, well, from the outside of this perspective, this wasn't particularly interesting or, you know, what have you.
But I think a review that's just like, well, I don't like this and it sucks and everything.
You know, if it's just a relentless bashing, I don't really see the appeal of that.
Yeah, absolutely.
Yeah.
Interesting to talk about and think about.
Is that the show?
I've got a couple more emails, actually.
Oh, my God, a couple.
It's been a big week for emails, James.
Big week for bloody emails.
These are just...
There's no questions here.
These are just statements.
Okay.
Of fact?
Yes.
Sam's emailed in and said,
Hello, James and Mason.
I don't have a question this week.
I just wanted to let you both know
that yesterday I sat in the middle seat of a plane
where the person on my left was watching the mandoloreen and Grogu
and the person on my right was watching Guy Ritchie's in the grey.
What a world we live in.
Pretty good, right?
They probably don't answer this, but this is in-flight entertainment,
or is that their own...
Doesn't say?
Yeah.
Doesn't say.
Too good...
Two good movies.
Two good movies.
Two good and real movies.
Great.
And he's one more email from Dan.
Yeah.
Hi, James and Mayso.
A few years ago, I emailed in about getting testicle surgery while listening to the podcast.
Hmm.
Since then I've...
Optional testicle surgeries?
Ah, it says that here, yep.
Optional.
Yep.
Okay.
Since then, I've completed high school, a diploma and a bachelor.
Move countries, faced health challenges and got married.
The pot has been a truly wonderful and consistent part of my life the whole way through.
Anyway, two days ago, a tick bit me on the balls while I was gardening, so my luck
remains about the same. Best regards, Dan. I was about to say, Dan, how are your balls?
Yeah, bit. Bit. Tick bit. Tick bit. Right?
I'm sorry. Did the tick come out? Or is the tick still in there?
It must have got, you would have been wearing shorts, I assume, in a loose brief.
Or georts. Jorts also, yeah. It's probably the Jorts what got you. Tick bites can be dangerous,
man. You can get all sorts of Lyme disease? Lime diseases and whatever. Limeed balls? Limed
balls? Yeah. Yeah, man, that's no good. I'm sorry to, but congratulations.
on all the things that you achieved in between incidents with your balls.
Agreed.
I think that's beautiful.
That middle window.
Yeah.
Really good.
I agree.
High school,
at educations and gardening,
but then he got bit on the balls.
That's right.
By a tick.
And I would say,
James,
that's bold and brave and cool and calm and beautiful.
It's hard to argue with that.
Agreed.
All right.
Should we leave the show?
Let's leave the show for now.
Yeah,
but who knows what next week will bring.
What will next week bring?
I was just looking at that and I don't actually not.
Some crap.
Some crap movie.
I'm just looking at my Google spreadsheet.
The runner?
The runner or the runner?
We could do both the runner or the runner.
I just want Resident Evil, which is the week after.
We can do Reacher.
You could watch the new season of Reacher.
Tell me what you think about Reacher.
Apparently it's the worst season yet.
I watched the first couple episodes.
I'm like, this is all right, but all the Reacher fans on hashtag Reacher.
On R slash Reacher or like, this is the worst season that's ever been.
Riches, he's not acting like himself.
A fictional man who's made up.
Yeah.
It isn't real or realistic in any way.
He's not acting like that.
He's not acting like it.
Anyway, we'll figure something out.
I'm not a fan, Mason, and I won't watch it this season or otherwise.
Wow, my goodness.
Yep.
All right, we'll figure something out then.
Yeah, we'll figure something out.
Could we watch that movie Motor City with Alan Richson?
Is that even out yet?
Don't know.
What if he's busy that day?
Then I'll watch it with you.
Okay.
That's from 2025.
Is it?
I thought that was yet to count.
You could say that, but that might be...
Sorry, it's July of this year.
That's what I'm saying.
It's speed out.
It's been out.
It also says it came out in 2020.
You always stripped up by that.
But it's the first one's always like a premiere or film festival or something.
Yeah.
No, you're listening to me.
It premiered at the Venice International Film Festival in August of last year
and then came out in July of this year.
Oh, then I stand corrected.
I don't like you how you called me out there, Mason.
I don't like you doing that.
Well, I'll never do it again, except for next week, and every week after that.
All right.
Folks, thank you so much for listening.
We absolutely appreciate it.
Thank you for telling your friends about the podcast, because that is how we get new listeners.

This is from DJ Khalid from the USA.
He says, we de best podcast.
This is DJ Khalid.
I used to think me and my mates were de best podcast,
but it turns out these two Australian guys are the best podcast.
So now I'm part of the weekly plan,
and there's nothing anyone can do about it.
Wow.
Pretty good.
Pretty bold of you, DJ Khalid.
Yeah.
We've never seen you in here.
Also, we don't like you for a number of reasons.
One of the reasons being you don't do that thing.
Why doesn't he do it?
I don't know, man.
Maybe he's changed his ways.
He definitely hasn't.
Put another review in DJ Khalid and let us know if you've changed your ways.
He definitely has it.
A man who spray paints his hair on is not doing that.
Wow.
Yeah.
What like that guy?
LeBron James.
He stopped doing that.
Did he?
Okay, right.
Okay.

I get to finish that.
A book series,
it is now an Apple TV show.
Love you guys.
Can't wait to take a picture of Mason on the toilet.
I don't think you said that at all.
I don't think there's enough characters there for him to say that.
He did,
Mason.
Wow.
He did,
and there's a picture of him putting,
like you're a polar road camera.
I don't know whether that's related.
Wow.
I don't know you can post pictures into Apple reviews or whatever.
I guess you can.
Will Wonders never cease
You know what I mean?
And he's ominously loading
He doesn't look ominous
He looks pretty happy about it
Well to me it's ominous
