Starting point is 00:00:01 Welcome back everybody to another episode of The Weekly Planet where we talk movies and comics and TV shows. My name is also known as Mr. Sunday and with me is always my co-host Nick Mason. What the heck? What do you mean what the heck? What even is your name? Get with the times, man. Everyone's doing it. They're doing what?
Starting point is 00:00:18 Whatever is happening. Whatever I'm doing. Okay. They're looking at me and they're going, all right, I'll take one of those and I'll take it with me. You're saying you're on trend? Well, people are they copy my trend, but I've already moved on to a different thing. So what you're like, well, what is he done? I'm already thinking of the next.
Starting point is 00:00:31 thing. Damn, this guy's good. I'm a real Anna Wintour in that way. Oh, yes. Is that what Anna Wintour does? I don't know. I don't follow trends. I make my own trends. Damn, this guy's good. That's right. I am. Wow. Mason, are you excited to talk about the movie Digger? Let me tell you this. Bang, bang. Whoa. He did that in the movie, didn't he? Yeah, that's right. I'm excited to talk about it. Me too, man. We've got a number of things to talk about this week. A movie that is divisive. I'll tell you that much. Very divisive. Yeah, we're also talking about how the Paramount Warner Brothers merger has gone through, or he's going through this week, finally, thank goodness. We've been here cheerleading it the whole time, and finally, we got a wish.
Starting point is 00:01:08 And we knew it would happen and we're glad and it's good. And we love Warner Brothers. That's right, we do. And there have been nothing but good for this business. That's right. Also, speaking of Paramount, we're going to talk about how their Transformers' G.I. Joe crossover movie, maybe that's not happening anymore. Now, I'll never find out what was in that empty basement at the stand of Rise of the Beast or whatever.
Starting point is 00:01:27 Weird tanks. We're a jetpack, probably. Probably a jet pack. We're testing this prototype. We're thinking of calling it Jet Man. There's a Jet Man in G.O.J. It's probably a Jet Man. Let me check.
Starting point is 00:01:38 Let me Google that just quickly. Jetman, if there's not... You don't think he's called Jet Man. There's Italian Jet Man. Okay. It's a rarity because it's a bootleg of the character's lip strain. And it says his name Spiro Spaghetti. I was going to say that's racist, but that is his name.
Starting point is 00:01:58 There we go. I know the law. under the deep G.I. Joe law. And the law if you say something racist, which this wasn't... Doesn't count. Something that happened. That's right.
Starting point is 00:02:08 We're going to talk about a new Spider-Man clone series that might be happening. This is a live-action series, just to be clear. This isn't another clone saga situation from the comics. I'm so confused. Yeah, you don't need to be confused, Mason. We've got a trailer for Vision Quest. Oh, that's right.
Starting point is 00:02:23 And, of course, we're going to be talking about... This broke just as the show went out last week, but the new Star Wars sequel trilogy, a new Star Wars sequel, and even more sequel. Okay, sure. The previous one. And who's behind it? Is it us? Yep.
Starting point is 00:02:38 There's time guides below. Rob Collings are wedded this makes that happen. And also, once again, standard provision here is that we're actually recording this Friday. So once again, if, you know, the merger goes backwards or, again, Tom Holland explodes or whatever it is. Or our new lanterns episode comes out, the final one. Yeah. We're not going to be talking about that. We haven't seen it yet.
Starting point is 00:02:57 That's right. But we will. Even if we're recording this on Sunday, which we normally do. We still would miss lanterns. We would still want to miss lanterns. Yeah, and Tom Holland could still explode. He could still explode at any moment. He could explode from love, from being so in love and having an excellent life and now being the most bankable movie star of all time or whatever happened.
Starting point is 00:03:11 You might explode from that. Yeah, it must be nice. I'd rather not explode. If it was me... I'd rather be a poor man that doesn't explode. Yeah, me too. And also, if it was me, I wouldn't have even appreciated it, so I don't even need it. I don't deserve it and I wouldn't appreciate it.
Starting point is 00:03:23 That's right. But you know what, I do deserve it. Do appreciate. Go on. I was on the latest episode, well, not the latest, because it's a bunch in the feed, but one of the latest episodes of Tofop. Oh, yes. Which, I don't know if you know this, but it's the longest-running Australian podcast.
Starting point is 00:03:36 What? Yeah, that's true. What? You can look that up, you can Google it. This will also go into the Google algorithm or whatever. How did you learn this fact? Oh, they told me. Wow.
Starting point is 00:03:44 And you just believe everything they tell you. Yes, I do. Will Anderson and Charlie Claus and two notorious liars. They said it to my face, so why would they lie to me, to my face? Yeah, basically, if you have a sense for, this is probably, it's irrelevant at this way, but it's 30-odd foot of pod. Which is a reference to a Russell Crow thing. It's not important.
Starting point is 00:04:01 They're two great Australians. Yeah. It should now be called the ordinary fear of pod. Have they discussed that? Is that his new... I'm sure they have. No, because he couldn't do 30-odd foot of grunt anymore. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:10 So he had to change it, but he couldn't... They didn't want to change the, I guess, the merch. Oh, okay, right. So he changed it to the ordinary fear of God. That's very clever. Yeah. So, yeah, we just talked about a bunch of stuff. We talked about the new Spider-Man movie.
Starting point is 00:04:22 We talk a bit about lanterns. We talk about how Charlie was yelled at because he was fair. cast in the Prince of Persia movie, even though he had nothing to do with it. We talk about being old dads. We talk about my character, Tickle Batman, which you might be familiar with it. There's a clip on my Instagram, if you do want to check it out. But it's a fun show.
Starting point is 00:04:37 Tickle Batman, specifically. It's a great show. It's been going. It's Australia's longest podcast, and those guys are awesome, and it was just fun to sit down with them and have a chat. So if you look that up, it's on all platforms, YouTube, Spotify, Apple. How's their studio? It's really nice.
Starting point is 00:04:50 I mean, it's a listener. And it's like a proper radio studio, and they've got, like, TVs on the wall. And they got an actual producer guy called Michael. Did they give you an icy cold can of Coke? They didn't actually. Did they give you a ride in the Triple Thunder? They gave me access to the toilet with a keycar, but I had to give the key card back. Wow.
Starting point is 00:05:06 And they met me in the foyer because you can't just go up in the building because it's a real... Where in my house, you can just come in. That's right. You can walk right in. Yeah. And there's no TVs anywhere, is there, or toilets? There's a lot of TVs, but there are no toilets. You can just say take a load off toilets anywhere.
Starting point is 00:05:24 I'm like, what? That can't be right. This is a house. Yeah, man. Yeah, man. But I guess you live that alternative lifestyle. Yeah, I said a trend. He's setting those trends of no toilets.
Starting point is 00:05:32 Yeah, which I'm thinking of reversing. But I probably won't because it's expensive. Anyway, it's great show. We've been on before as well and Charlie's been in here and so it's Will and whatever. Very good. That's cool. Let's start here, Mason. Variety.
Starting point is 00:05:44 They've confirmed that the paramount buying of Warner Brothers, but they, well, sorry, I should put this under one company buys another company news. Correct, yes. Which we love. We love it. It's going ahead. It'll be so much easier when there's only one company left. Who do you think it'll be?
Starting point is 00:05:59 Good question. Is it Apple? Is Apple the biggest company? Apple, no. It would be some AI company. Amazon. But it might be an AI company that's like funded by billionaire lunatics. And the CIA.
Starting point is 00:06:11 And the CIA. What we can hope is that an AI company buys everything. Like that's the last company left. And then everybody realizes that AI sucks and then it just goes under. And then we don't have any companies left. And then we don't have to worry about it. Oh, we don't have to go to work or anything. No.
Starting point is 00:06:24 We sit around a flaming bin Like we always wanted to do My God, my son You know? That's incredible We can pantomime in front of the bin And be like, Remember the old days
Starting point is 00:06:32 Where you get a delivery Next day But sometimes it doesn't turn up Yeah Those were the days Those were the days Hell yeah So this was approved
Starting point is 00:06:42 By US District Judge Selly Martinez Ogling So remove the last barriers To make the She's bloody ogling That bride money Yeah, well look
Starting point is 00:06:51 Allegedly Just kidding I don't think she's accepted any bribe I don't know. I don't think so, maybe, but like these things, like, this was always going to happen. And there were roadblocks along the way, which we talked and we laughed about because ha-ha.
Starting point is 00:07:02 Isn't it funny when billionaires don't get exactly what they want? But guess what? They did again. They've done it again. They've done it again with their money. 111 billion dollar merger is going through. So it was cleared by regulators in 68 jurisdictions worldwide, including the Justice Department. You don't need to know about any of the specifics of that.
Starting point is 00:07:22 But it's also, it does have some billionaire. funding from some different sources around the world. Of course, David Allison, who runs Paramount, his father is Larry Allison, who runs Oracle, and is a billionaire and friends with Trump and blah, blah, blah. And it's not even about Trump. It's a larger problem with society, Mason, I would say, if anything. Wow.
Starting point is 00:07:38 Do you think the movie Digger will solve all these problems? Well, it seems like he's going to do that, Mason. Yep. Anyway, so this will bring together two of Hollywood's biggest movie studios. Haza! So we're going to get a HBO Max and Paramount Plus streaming services combined, and then we've got the TV businesses, including CBS, They can call it B-O.
Starting point is 00:07:55 Yeah, mate. In their grand tradition of being awful and ruining and doing the wrong thing. And they can't smell themselves. Yes. You can't smell your own B-O. I can. It's that bad that you can spell yourself. I can smell their B-O from over here, mate.
Starting point is 00:08:10 And their BS. Whoa, got them. Got them big time. Yeah. So TV business including CBS, CNN, MTV, TBS, Comedy Central Food Network and more. This is Food Network. Mm. We do we have Food Network here?
Starting point is 00:08:23 I don't know. Yeah. I don't think we do. Okay. The company's entertainment franchise, of course, spans Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, DC University Yellowstone, Mission Impossible, Top Gun, Nickelodeon kids. All of these different things. Ninja turtles.
Starting point is 00:08:37 Ninja turtles is owned by Nickelodeon. They're owned by Nickelodeon. Yeah, at the moment. At the moment. So with this deal closed, of course, CEO of Warner Brothers, David Zazlap, who has been gutting Warner Brothers and restructuring and whatever. Also, Warner Brothers having it.
Starting point is 00:08:51 Such a mean word to say that he's gutting it. I think he said that. He's reinvigorating it by cutting bits off and throwing them in the bin. So here, of course, this is the plan all along to basically sell it at the highest price possible. This nearly went to Netflix, but of course Paramount kept raising the capital and pushing the price up until the Netflix deal fell through. But David Zazleb is going to step away and earn $550 million in stock and cash. Big Z. Once this deal closes, that's great.
Starting point is 00:09:22 And Paramount is expected, and this deal is supposed to happen on October 6th. So this week, it's going to happen. Wow. And you might be like, well, who's going to run this mega company? Is it us? They haven't asked. I mean, if this falls through this person, then, yeah, then we might be the next in line. Okay.
Starting point is 00:09:39 I mean, I guess whoever this is, we can sabotage them. Yeah, true. So David Allison, he's going to run it along with Mattel. Oh, David Ellison. Yeah. Oh, wow. Yeah, but he's going to co-CEO with Yon Crease, who was Mattel's CEO. so he's been courting him.
Starting point is 00:09:54 And Allison will lead all strategy, creative, and technology functions. And CREAS will oversee the company's day-to-day operations and integration of combined businesses. Brilliant. Which I know is the job that you wanted. I'm sorry that you're only hearing this for the first time. I like integrating businesses or whatever you say. Yeah, I know you do.
Starting point is 00:10:10 So has this guy gotten this role because Mattel is doing well because the Barbie movie did well? Yeah, probably. Presumably he had nothing to do with that. Even though it was three years ago or whatever? Yeah, probably. I mean, because the last one didn't do very well, did it, he man. And then I think Apple are doing a matchbox movie or whatever or a Hot Wheels movie, whichever one it is.
Starting point is 00:10:28 I think it's both. Which are also Mattel? It's Matchbox. Because aren't they, the Matchbox club or something? They're the matchbox kids and now they're men and women grown and big. Anyway. So this is just going to keep happening until, like you said, one company happens and then did you see the little, this wasn't in the news, but the little meta announcement? Have they got their little key fog, keyfob AI Gremlin?
Starting point is 00:10:51 He talks to you and he's like, you can help you out. It's an Apple watch, but it doesn't have a key fob. Okay. It's like, hi. Well, that's the trend now. I think is you have all sorts of key fobs and stuff on your backpack or whatever. Yeah, okay. As you go to your second or third job, you know, to stay afloat.
Starting point is 00:11:06 That is the trend. That is the trend. I mean, you wouldn't know because you're beyond the trend. Look, I did start that trend, but obviously I'll move beyond it at this point. Yeah, yeah. I mean, you put the key fob on your backpack to go from one of your money bins to your other money bin. Correct. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:11:19 Does anybody just want to think fucking. Listening and talking to, I guess people do. Maybe they do. What the fuck do I know? What's the voice that uses? It's on trend, Mason. You look at it to me like that. Okay.
Starting point is 00:11:32 But I've set that trend. Okay, so it's a fob with a goblin, gremlin voice. Okay. Yeah. So you can ask it things in it. They could call it Gobgrem. You could go, hey, gobgrem. Yes, what do you want?
Starting point is 00:11:46 What do you want? Yeah. What's the weather going to be like? Nah! Shut up. Sounds about right. So the same, then. Bad forever.
Starting point is 00:12:02 Gobgrem, away! And then you have to pay another subscription for it. Yeah, but it's not really away, because it's always listening. It's always listening, yeah. To be clear, I'm always listening. That's what it says, 100s, Sprad. To be clear, you're bound by the terms and conditions on gobgram.com. Why does Zuckerberg insist on doing these presentations?
Starting point is 00:12:21 I mean, because he's a lunatic, right? Like, does he not see the feedback of, like... I don't think he's a lunatic. I think he is a lunatic. Okay, all right. So, what are you saying, though? Sorry. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:12:29 I don't, I don't think he has any kind of personality. Yeah, no, I understand that. Lunatic would be a personality. Yeah, I guess. Yeah, it's interesting, though. It's very interesting. But also, he's got to have something to do, right? Yeah, okay, yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:42 Like, he's reached that point of CEOdom or whatever. Yeah. That he doesn't do anything. So I imagine he's like... No, he does harm. Oh, he does, absolutely he does harm. And they've got that movie coming out where he's... We all know he does harm.
Starting point is 00:12:54 I saw the trailer before Digger. I want to talk about it when we talk about Digger. I'd love to. Yeah, well, very relevant, Mason. Very relevant. Speaking of very relevant. The Transformer G.I. Joe crossover movie is no longer happening at Paramount or Warner Brothers, I guess. Interesting.
Starting point is 00:13:07 This is apparently because Danny McBride's version is going ahead of G.I. Joe. Okay. I don't know if you heard this, but Brad Cooper is playing Duke. Mr. Bradley Cooper. Yeah. So that'll be a movie we can watch when it comes. I mean, I like Danny McBride. And I think he could probably make a movie.
Starting point is 00:13:22 a fun G.I. Joe movie. You think he's going to be in it? Yeah, he could be like Explosso or whatever. Or a jet Italian... Spiro Spaghetti. Yes. Yeah, I think he could do it.
Starting point is 00:13:35 Yeah. Now, you were saying to me that you can't ethically consume this because of the dealings and wheelings and dealings of paramount. I don't have a problem with that. I didn't have a problem with it. I said hookab bad GI Joe movie into my veins.
Starting point is 00:13:47 This is Hobgobgoblin Keeche. Gobgrem. Gobram. Gobgram. Shut up, all right. You'll be listen because you are. Oh, it would deliver ads to you as well. Definitely would.
Starting point is 00:13:58 Especially while you're asleep. Yeah, man. You know? Yeah. It's whispering to you. Yeah. Get men of glasses. We can film women.
Starting point is 00:14:05 It's true. It's what they do. That's what they're for. Yeah. That's what they're for. So, yeah. So obviously in 2020. The annoying thing about the purveh glasses.
Starting point is 00:14:16 They look like your glasses. I have a, like, the glasses I wear generally are like the big nerd frames. Yeah. And like, that's the format. That's the form factor of the pervert glasses. And it looks like I'm wearing pervert glass. And they are covered in tape as well because you keep breaking them. And it looks like you're covering out different cameras and red lights.
Starting point is 00:14:33 Yeah. So that's, you know, that's interesting. That's interesting. Yeah. Oh, good. My son's basketball club is, they're always like, huh, guess what? This person's been, they've been, they send you emails,
Starting point is 00:14:44 which I don't know if you can opt out of. But they're like, do you know this person? They've actually become head of management of this basketball club. And I just want to write back and be like, nobody in the world cares about this. Wow. Like nobody. Like outside of this guy's family.
Starting point is 00:14:56 And even then, I don't think he cares. When something happens here, Mason, I don't email everybody, do I? Do I? Except when I took all those toilets out, I did email everybody. You did email everybody. I don't know, man. You were like new order of business. Everyone do your business before you get here.
Starting point is 00:15:15 Big time. Big time. Yeah. What are we talking about? G. G. J.J. Yeah, so there was a, we talked about this, but there was a hint towards it in Rise of the Beast at the end.
Starting point is 00:15:24 Every now and then, my son's like, what's going on with that G.I. Joe Transformers, next Transformers movie. I'm like, I don't know, man. God, wish I could tell you. I did tell him that they're doing that animated series, Invincible style of the G.I. Joe crossover Energon universe. That is happening. That's someone to look forward to. But if it's not live action, it doesn't count. And I'm like, Michael Bay might be coming back and he knows who that is now. And he's like, oh, no. Has he seen the Michael? Amazing in the mall. All of them, wow. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:51 Wow. He doesn't like them. That's interesting. Yeah. Like. Did he like some of it? I think he liked the first one. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:58 But the only ones he rewatches ever is like Transformers 1, bumblebee, rise in the best. He doesn't watch the other ones. That's a good movies for kids. They are good movies for kids. I agree. And, you know, and look, I'm not a huge Gio Joe fan. If I'm honest with you. Wow.
Starting point is 00:16:12 Except for that snake eyes movie, which we should talk about. Yeah. Maybe next week. We'll do it. We can't squeeze it in this way. No, no, no, no, no. But, you know, again, Danny McBride, G.I. Joe. Bit of fun.
Starting point is 00:16:22 Bit of fun. And then Transformers cross over. Yeah. And then reboot. I mean, if they finally do a G.I. Joe movie that's a big hit. Maybe they're like, maybe that re-energizes, re-energizes the idea of it. And then they can be like, well, this is, this half is proven. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:39 Now we bring in the Transformers and bring the whole thing down. I have speaking of a friend of mine about this and about G.I. Joe, because I thought he was a fan. Because he grew up in England. Yeah. And he was at 80s. Transformers fan. And you know, you know this, but the Transformers comics in England are different from the other ones in the US and different continuities or whatever. And I was like, oh, you must have been a G.I. Joe fan. He's like, no, I would just want to get through that to get back to the
Starting point is 00:16:59 Transformers stuff. Did you ask him about Action Force? I probably did. Which was what G.I. Joe was called in the United States for a while. But he didn't like any of that. Then it became G. Then it became G. Joe, the Action Force. They synergized it. Yeah. Because back in the day, you got the British Transformers comic books and they had American stories and new British stories where they were British Transformers. Telly Howard and whatever. And they had a G. And they had a Gio backup store. Right, okay. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:19 But did you like any of that or were you just like back? Oh, okay. Yeah. I shouldn't get you and you and him together. For one, I couldn't get you both here because I don't have a toilet. Yeah. But. And we're both notorious toilet hogs.
Starting point is 00:17:31 Even if you had one toilet. Yeah. It would be constantly bickering over the use of the toilet. That's very true. Anyway, let's, anyway, I just thought it was interesting that it was like, I don't care about GIO. Wow. Which I think is probably the general consensus.
Starting point is 00:17:43 Yeah. Did you ask him about the core, which was the G. Gio-Jocon knock-up action figures you'd get at the supermarket. I had more cause than Gio's. I'll tell you that much. Deadline, Mason. Oh, yes. They're reporting that off the back of Spider-Man noir being cancelled.
Starting point is 00:17:57 I got a text from him. What they say? It's for you? Are you here? No, tell them I'm not here. Okay. All right. What does it say?
Starting point is 00:18:06 They're very insistent. What does it say? They said, when he gets here, tell him he's dead. They said, when James gets there, I already won. I don't know. I don't like how they do. text now. They used to call.
Starting point is 00:18:19 Well, that didn't work usually. Oftentimes you didn't pick up. So they know. So they contact you. They contact me. To let them know. And I said to them, I'm always happy to pass along a message, you know? Okay.
Starting point is 00:18:30 Good. Great. Yeah. And they said to be clear, we're mostly going to send messages to James to say he's dead. Okay. We're threatening him. And I said, that's fine. Oh, so it's not just something bad will just happen to befall me.
Starting point is 00:18:42 They're saying that they are going to kill me. Yeah, yeah. Okay, great. Cool. Well, anyways, there's going to be. a new Spider-Man series. We talked about this at Prime. This one's going to be written by American Boy and Chinese creator Kelvin Yu.
Starting point is 00:18:55 And so the idea is about this one is, Betwine, Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel characters. They're going to build something around the Clones saga storyline from Marvel Comics, which you hated? I hated at the time. Yeah. It got you out of comics. Correct for years and years. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:12 Specifically, they're going to talk about the second Clone Story arc, which will focus on two Spider-Man clones, Ben Riley and Kane Parker. Okay. So Ben Riley, of course, becomes the Scarlet Spider. Kane Parker is apparently the first Spider-Man clone or something. Yeah, he's like... The one who got dropped down a smokestack. Was that him?
Starting point is 00:19:31 No, that's Ben Riley. But Kane is the... Kane, they added later, and they're like, he's the original prototype. So he's got the more... He's got all his power... He's got all the Spider-Man powers, but they're ramped up. So, like, as well as having the spider sense, he can see the future. and like as well as having the stick to walls,
Starting point is 00:19:49 he can use that power to like... He can stick to the future. He can stick right to the future. But he can like burn people's faces off and stuff. Oh my God, by sticking to the future. Exactly. Yeah, okay. So he become a villain?
Starting point is 00:20:00 He is a villain, yeah. Yeah, okay. But then he becomes a good guy later. Oh my God. Yeah. But then they brought him back and he was regular. I'm regular now. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:20:07 I think he's taken over by... I think he's taken over for Spider-Man. You know, stuff like that. Anyway. Well, that's the deal behind Ben Riley, isn't it? Because at one point I was like, well, who's the real Peter Park or whatever. It's a Ben Raleigh or whatever. It's blah, blah, blah. Comics will serve as inspiration for this, but there's going to be significant differences,
Starting point is 00:20:22 they reckon. Some are saying that the TV series will follow Ben and Kane as they grapple with their newly discovered identities of clones while also facing other clones. All right. Clones are all way down on. Another clone that the comics becomes a villain's spider side. That's correct. Yeah. Others claim that the series may alter Ben and Kane's origin as clones, and they could take on new identities. Does this involve... It seems like they're just thrown out a bunch of ideas and seeing which ones the public... Which one do you like, are they're going to cost two different people?
Starting point is 00:20:45 Because if they're clones, are they like... Well, Keynes all scarred up. Oh. Except her later than he isn't. Oh. But you can be like, well, it's because of different DNA. Different DNA. But the same DNA, but different.
Starting point is 00:20:55 Yeah, if it's different DNA, they're not really clones, are they? Different spiders. Different spiders. Okay, fair enough. How are you feeling about this? And will it be bad? Or will it be good? Apparently American-born Chinese is good.
Starting point is 00:21:06 Okay. Anything can be good. In Spider-Man noir, pretty fun. Pretty good. That's true. Okay. Yeah, all right. I mean, at least these guys are superheroes.
Starting point is 00:21:14 True. Yeah. There is also something in... There is something interesting about the clone saga. There is, that's true. It's more the execution. They happen to just blow it out.
Starting point is 00:21:25 Yeah, for a million issues, yeah. Yeah, so it's not... That part's not very good. Also, they can't do that on TV. No. They have to cut it down to like eight episodes. Is there any chance? Yes, go on.
Starting point is 00:21:36 And tell me if you think I've taken things too far. Yep. Even though I'm setting trends here, that Tom Holland will play both Spider-Man or any role in this. I'll just check. Hey, Gobgrem. Yeah. What do you think about the chances
Starting point is 00:21:50 The top of the top of the... Shut up! Wow. Yeah, you have it, folks, yeah. Outlook not so good! Was that a yes? I don't think so, no. Okay, cool.
Starting point is 00:21:59 Is that what you think also? Yes. Yeah, he's not going to be in it, right? No, surely not. They'd have to pay him a billion dollars. To pay him a billion dollars. And to do TV? TV.
Starting point is 00:22:08 It hasn't done TV since the crowded room. The crowded room was on Apple TV or something. Oh. People didn't like it. I think Amanda Seafreed was in it. Oh, this one? Yeah. He had longer hair, didn't he?
Starting point is 00:22:21 Yes. People didn't like this. He was arrested for shocking crimes. The guy from the crowded room. Right, okay, yeah. Yeah. Should I watch this? He crowded that room.
Starting point is 00:22:30 Too good. Apparently, it's not very good. Should I watch this? Yeah, you should watch it. Okay. It's a limited series. Yeah. And I like that.
Starting point is 00:22:37 Okay. Okay. I'm excited for this. What are we going to do? Are we going to, because I love the, I don't like the Scarlet Spider-Suit, but I like his second Spider-Man costume, which I think should have been adopted
Starting point is 00:22:50 as the main Spider-Man costume. Okay, what's the set? Which one's that? It's the one, it's... Gobgrem? Can you do images? No! No, get out of here!
Starting point is 00:22:59 I can describe him. What's bad? Does it help? It's not a description. But it's the one... It's not the Hood one, is it? No, that's the Scarlet Spider-Suit. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:23:10 The... It's this one? Oh, yeah, that's cool. It's got the... the wider spider, it's a bigger Spider-Man emblem. It's a bit superior Spider-Man. Yeah, and it's got the, like, the external web shooters and stuff. It's the one that, it's the, it's the spider girl costume. Yeah. Um, I, I like it a lot. I think it's one of the 90s desire. There we go. That's a good, that's a good, that's a good, that's good. That's good. Is that Todd McFarlane? No, that would
Starting point is 00:23:31 be Mark Bagley. Oh, the bag man. The bag man. All right. And then he got a, he got a later one, which is, it's got the off-center logo. Oh, I've never seen that before. Yeah. It's like over the heart. That's from a couple of years ago. but I like that version of it And that's the bag man you're telling me That's that might also be the bag? No I don't think that is the bag man But are they going to do costumes at all
Starting point is 00:23:54 Or are they not going to be costumes Surely they've learned by now that that's what people I mean they did it with obviously the Nicholas Cage one Yeah but he's just in the trench coat really Yeah but he does wear that That's an easier costume to do I guess as well Because it's just a baler club I bet we're going to do hoodie in Spider-Man
Starting point is 00:24:10 Yeah probably I mean that's the one they know from Spider-Man animated movie time. That's true, yeah. Yeah. Mason, speaking of TV, go on. You saw the new trailer for Vision Quest? I did. And what about it?
Starting point is 00:24:22 I like it. It looks exciting. It does look exciting. Some of it taking place in the real world, some of it taking place in some sort of virtual world. It's some sort of digital reality? The scene where he's at the start where he's like, I'm here for the trap.
Starting point is 00:24:34 Yeah. That's in the real world, right? I guess so? Yeah. Would make more sense. Oh, I've got a minute to the top top. I also saw Adventures OnCourse. I'll talk about that in what we were reading.
Starting point is 00:24:43 So I meant to... Very good. Yeah. I'll put that'll be in the title. Looks like we're getting a couple of things. We're getting vision sitting in a room in a cinema watching his memories, which is the Loki means of like getting the character up to speed. Yeah, you get too up to date.
Starting point is 00:24:58 We're getting seemingly, we're going to see him as the white vision, but also he's getting a new regular vision. Yeah. Looks pretty good. We get a look at Jakasta and... What's the guy? The butler. Oh, real Jarvis.
Starting point is 00:25:11 Real Jarvis. Yeah. The plot seems to be that one of Vision's sons has turned out to be real. Well, because the other one also turned out to be all along, yeah. Because he was a consciousness. He was Wiccan. He was Wiccan. But he was a consciousness he took over a person in the real world, which I guess is what happened here.
Starting point is 00:25:26 So now Speed is in the real world as well, and he's in a bit of trouble. Yeah. So Vision's going to have to, I don't know. He uses vision powers. He uses vision powers. We get also Paladin, who's a mercenary character from the Marvel Universe, who was, there was a real push for him in, like, the early 90s. I like that character. What does he do? He's like... Guns? Yeah, guns and he's a bit strong. All right. He's like a stock mercenary, but he's like...
Starting point is 00:25:52 Okay. What would you say? Chances are of a scarlet witch appearance? Because they're like, she's dead. James Faber says it. I thought she'd turn up in Agatha and she doesn't. That's true. I reckon there's a small chance. I reckon there's a decent chance of that happening. Yeah, but then again, I thought there would be in Agatha and there wasn't and I'm mad about it. This looks really good. I agree. Yeah. Do you think James Spader's Ultron is going to be evil, but then be like, I'm not that evil, actually. But then I am evil.
Starting point is 00:26:20 But I'm not that evil, actually. Paladin created by Jim Shooter. Bang, bang. The shoot himself. Bang, bang, bang. And Carmen Infantino. Sorry, Collings, that was really loud. You'll probably take that down.
Starting point is 00:26:30 You'll take that bullet for everybody. Yeah. By lowering the volume. I like the new Vision suit as well. It's good. Yeah, me too. Looks good. And he lives in a cupboard as well, if you remember from the last trailer.
Starting point is 00:26:39 Oh, yeah. Goes home from work and gets in a cupboard. So this is actually out soon This is out October 14th It's going to be two episodes premiere And there's going to be eight in total This is just in time for Halloween Or what I call
Starting point is 00:26:52 Spooky's Time of All Time And I'm not talking about Halloween Tattax time What do I say? I don't know man You're so ahead of the trends I just I can't remember what you're up to I've gone full circle
Starting point is 00:27:02 I've gone full circle So now to be clear The Spookyest time of the year is in fact Halloween Yeah Okay Mason Night's Edge Media and T.H.R. have reported this.
Starting point is 00:27:13 This is big Star Wars news, which I know you love. Right. Right. There's a new Star Wars sequel trilogy in the work. Hang on, I've just got a text from Knights Edge Media. Why? It says, you're dead. Why?
Starting point is 00:27:27 I don't know. I'm helping them. I'm promoting them. I'm cross-promotion. Straight promotion. I've got another email. It says, you're on the Knight's Edge of being dead. The Knights Edge of Being Dead.
Starting point is 00:27:37 I guess that's their brandy. They're branding. Yeah. Do they threaten other people or it's just me, do you know? Well, it's BCC, so I don't know who else they're threatening. But it just says James, Mr. Sunday movies, you're on a night's edge, see how this goes. And everybody was in on this. They see this.
Starting point is 00:27:54 Looks like most people are in on this. Great. Yeah. So this is a sequel trilogy to the sequel trilogy. What do you call that then? The new sequel trilogy? The post-sequel trilogy? Originals, prequel, sequels.
Starting point is 00:28:08 It's, you know, you get it, don't you? Yes. It's fire, as they say. Oh, it's fire, alright. I wouldn't say that because it's not on trend. You've moved on. You've moved on, I understand it. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:28:18 I call it another sequel. I call it not another sequel trilogy. Not another the Star Wars sequel trilogy. So you know about this, right? No. In terms of who's writing it? No. It's going to be Simon Kinberg, who wrote Triple X State of Union, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, the movie, X-Men
Starting point is 00:28:33 The Last Stand, and also the movie Dark Phoenix, about the two same things. But he directed Dark Phoenix. If you just cherry picked a bunch of bad things just then? He's a guy that does some good stuff and some bad stuff. He's some, yeah, jumper, Sherlock Holmes, there you go. Dades of Future Past, he wrote that. Okay. Fantastic 4, 2015.
Starting point is 00:28:48 Oh, yeah. A movie apocalypse, the X-Men apocalypse. He also wrote on Star Wars Rebels. Okay. But John Watts is apparently going to direct, who directed the first Tom Holland Spider-Man trilogy. Do you think that's because the new Spider-Man trilogy was successful? And they went, well, we'll get a Spider-Man guy.
Starting point is 00:29:05 I mean, probably. Yeah. He also co-created the Scarletes. The skeleton crew, though. That's there it is. Yeah, that's right. Which is pretty good if you've seen. I like it was fun, yeah.
Starting point is 00:29:13 I think it was fun. Yeah. Again, another fun, all ages thing. And that's really, I think, where they should probably be shooting for here. Mm-hmm. The project is intended to act as the next chapter in what is referred to as the Skywalker saga. Oh, here we go. Even though they're all dead.
Starting point is 00:29:26 Yet another Skywalker saga. The stories feature multi-generate. The stories featuring the multi-generations of Luke Skywalker's family. Yeah, we know that. Even though he's dead. And Ray is. taking the name Skywalker though which you can do
Starting point is 00:29:40 Daisy Ridley will apparently appear in some capacity I reckon she was gonna get a Starfighter cameo because that's in that era right yeah sure sure sure this feels boring and safe yep but that's what we need sure I think so too
Starting point is 00:29:55 yeah yeah I mean it could be good but it just feels very I think they're like listen we're gonna do three movies and we're gonna plan them out from the start because that's what was the problem with the last one I guess there's a fine line between safe and like appealing to a broad audience, you know. Yeah. There's a chance that this could be very good.
Starting point is 00:30:13 I wonder what by the time this comes out, though, do you get that the love for the sequels will have built by then? Because there was 10 years between the prequels and the sequels. And then people started to like them again. No, I think people are still mad about The Last Jedi. No, I can tell. I know that, but this is what? At least... And I'm still mad about the last one, Rise of Skywalk. That was a good one, though.
Starting point is 00:30:35 No, you don't think that. Don't put that out in the world. I put that bad energy out in the world. This isn't a trend either. This is just to be clear. I didn't invent this trend. That's something that everybody thinks. It's a good movie. Nobody thinks that.
Starting point is 00:30:46 Nobody likes that one. It is, they, they, they, they, they please no one. I think that's sort of fascinating. That is a skill in itself that they went, this is a movie that pleases no one. Well, pleased me. I liked it. I thought it was great. James, you did not think that.
Starting point is 00:31:05 Stop putting lies out in the world. I won't. I'll never stop. Wow, okay. Sources say that this project is in development, but has not been green-lit. All right. Which is very Star Wars, isn't it? Isn't it, though?
Starting point is 00:31:17 And we'll fire anyone at any moment. Yep. Anyone steps out of line? They're dead. Bang, bang. Yeah, that's right. Apparently, though, it's the project furthest to long in development after Starfighter,
Starting point is 00:31:27 which is filmed and probably almost certainly will come out. So there you go. We're stepping back into the world of Star Wars. Hazzah! And that's good. And we like the last... We've never stepped out of the world of Star Wars. It keeps going forever.
Starting point is 00:31:40 What are you talking about? It's not like we had a Star Wars movie this year. You're right. We would remember it if we did. It would have made such an impact. We would know. Would have made a billion dollars. It certainly would have made more than, you know, a bunch of low-budget horror movies or whatever.
Starting point is 00:31:54 So, because if it did, if one came out and it didn't beat, like, obsession. Yeah. Something's obviously gone wrong. That'd be embarrassing. Yeah. But, you know, this is the new era of Star Wars as well. This is the Dave Faloni taken over as CEO from Kathleen Kennedy of Star Wars. We're in Cowboy Hat Star Wars era, finally.
Starting point is 00:32:13 That should be a positive thing, but it's often not a positive thing. What's that? Cowboy Hat Star Wars. Yeah, it sounds like it's a... Sounds really cool. The Wild West out here, man. And for a minute it was. When?
Starting point is 00:32:25 Mandalorian, season one. Oh, yeah, that was pretty good. Yeah. And, you know, Andor... Kathleen Kennedy... Champion to Andrew. Andor's good. Where you're out with Star Wars in terms of the ratio of bad to good.
Starting point is 00:32:39 What's the percentage that is good or watchable? Including everything? Everything. Everything that you can watch. Okay. If we're including like a Soca. Yeah. Everything.
Starting point is 00:32:51 Yeah. And Book of Boba Fed, subsequent is The Mandalorian. A bunch of movies that are bad. Caravan of Courage. I don't know. I haven't seen those. Maybe you have. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:33:03 You know. 30% is pretty good is what you see. I said 20%. It's pretty good. Yeah. One in five. There's incredible odds. Very good.
Starting point is 00:33:10 And never tell me the odds. That's right. I know. I know. Should we move to talk about a movie? Yeah, let's do it. All right. Digger.
Starting point is 00:33:18 Oh, yes. You might have heard about the budget for this. I've heard. Let me tell you. I think it was originally supposed to be like 120-ish million. 125, yep. Blew out to 180. Yep.
Starting point is 00:33:27 $100 million in marketing. Correct. So probably a $300 million movie. Warner Brothers disputes this, though. They say, because apparently it needs 350 million to break even. One of a brother says, no, actually, it's 300 million, which is still really bad.
Starting point is 00:33:41 Yeah. Because I don't know if you've heard, but the box office for this is... Grim? Grim. It was originally going to have... Because it's a movie for no one? It is a movie for no one. And there's a dying cat in the trailer?
Starting point is 00:33:50 There is a dying cat in the trailer and in the movie. Yeah. So it was supposed to initially have a US opening of $8 into $20 million, but it's going to be somewhere between 12 and 15. This is one of the... Well, that's a mere 20 solid weeks of that. At its best possible result. We're going to be fine.
Starting point is 00:34:08 Just half a year. A mere half a year, keep it in cinemas. It doesn't drop off at all. It'll make 300 million back easy. Half a year is going to pass it anyway. So you may as well just release this every weekend for the six months. Yeah. To follow this.
Starting point is 00:34:23 Yeah, yeah. This is going to be... More dying cats in the trailer. Please. This is going to be one of the biggest box office bombs of the year. Like, without a doubt. Of the decade, maybe. Which I think is interesting as well because on top of that,
Starting point is 00:34:35 It's been a very mixed reception critically. But the movie is leaning into that. There's a new trailer which is being referred to as the Decide for Yourself campaign. Oh, here we go. And the quotes are, masterpiece, unpleasant, brilliant, baffling, magnificent, insufferable. All of these things. I've got a quote here. This is from film critic Sidhan Adlaka, who we've mentioned before, I think,
Starting point is 00:34:58 who does a bunch of interesting reviews. His review included that he referred to a digger as, awards bait Deadpool which is pretty brutal it's not wrong what do you think the story was oh come on man
Starting point is 00:35:18 all right God all right okay so Tom Cruise is digger yeah he's digger Rockwell he's having a normal one he's an oil man his father was an oil man
Starting point is 00:35:27 and I think maybe his grandfather was an oil man and he lives in a big house with his dying cat it's a million years old and he's half sister is Sandra Huller and there are other people also.
Starting point is 00:35:40 They're also in it. They're all around there. And he lives in this horrible, drafty-looking mansion. Yep. Just being pasty and weird. Yeah. And, you know, overseeing this company that's drilling out millions of
Starting point is 00:35:55 barrels of oil from Greenland or somewhere. But then it turns... To do a loophole or whatever. Exactly. And then it turns out a giant piece of Arctic ice shelf or Greenland ice shelf has broken off and it's going to sail across the world and crash into Europe
Starting point is 00:36:12 so he's got to figure out what to do. Maybe the answer's nothing. But maybe he will figure it out. Maybe he's got to talk to the president who's John Goodman. Yeah. President John Goodman. He's got to talk to his flunky, Riz Ahmed.
Starting point is 00:36:24 Riz Ahmed's so good in this. Yeah, great, everybody's good in this. Robocop 3's in this. The guy who played Robocop 3 in Robocop 3. Is he? Yeah. He's one of the generals. There you go.
Starting point is 00:36:34 I'm pretty sure it is. All right then. What's his name again? I don't know. Robicot. He was also in, what's it? The Last of Us or whatever. Robert John Burke.
Starting point is 00:36:44 Oh, okay. Yeah, he's in this. This guy. Oh, that's okay. He's Robocop 3, Mason. Okay, right. Some people will leave us a surprise because, okay, there's... There are some surprises in this.
Starting point is 00:36:55 There are some surprises in this. I will say that Sophie Wilde from Talk to Me is in this. Oh, she is too. Australian film. That's who that is. Oh. No, I say good for her. Is she British?
Starting point is 00:37:06 No, she's Australian, I think. God, she's Britishing it up in this. She's Australian. There you go. So this is, of course, directed by Alejandro G. Inoratu. Is that I said? Inoritu, sorry. Maybe it's Inerritu.
Starting point is 00:37:18 Inoritu. I'm sorry for my accent. He's done Birdman, the Revenant, and a bunch of stuff I haven't seen. Absolutely. I should say that Siddhan and Larka's review, I read that. and he has very clearly seen everything that Inoridu's done, including all his non-English language stuff. No, no, but I...
Starting point is 00:37:40 And what I would say is that he didn't particularly like this movie, and I think that's probably because he's seen everything else this director has done and probably some of it is... Some of his work is better than this and what have you. But I've only really seen a couple of things. Yeah, same. So I'm like, maybe if I'd seen everything of his, I'd be like, I'm tired of all these tricks or whatever.
Starting point is 00:37:58 Yeah, well, you can definitely see there's a... bunch of Birdman in this. Yep. There's a bunch of Dr. Strange love in this. Absolutely. There's a bunch of Robicop 3 in this. Robicop 3 in this. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:38:10 What am I going to do? Well, Digger's going to put on his jetpack. And he's going to jetpack around. He's going to team up with the splatterpunks. There's Brazil in this. Yes. Wouldn't you say? Yes.
Starting point is 00:38:22 There's a Brazil moment. I don't like Brazil. No, I don't like it either. What'd you think? I thought it was very interesting. I agree. I think it's got some interesting. ideas in it
Starting point is 00:38:32 and it made me think. It did make it. I had a bit of a thing. It's definitely stuck with me. What I had, I had a bit of a think about, and we've talked about this before, about how effective satire is, like political satire. Yeah. And like what is even, like, is it useful?
Starting point is 00:38:48 Yeah. Is it useful if you just watch some satire? It's art as activism kind of. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, this also, this movie in its, and look, there's a, there's a big. spoiler reveal in this which we'll talk about in spoilers. What I would say, yeah, so this, what is
Starting point is 00:39:06 interesting I think, so my experience with this movie was you didn't know the thing that it was. No, but I had a guess. Okay, because there's some hints towards it earlier on. Yeah, but I, but the, and of course you know, in the various
Starting point is 00:39:20 social media's and what people are like, well, when soon as you find out what this really is, you'll be mad about it or whatever. It's not a musical idea. I had, I had, so I had like an educated guess. Okay. But, um, so I would say like the conceit of this movie reveals itself at about the 30 minute mark. Yeah. And then about an hour after that, I'm like, oh, that's where the concept sort of gels together.
Starting point is 00:39:40 Yeah, totally. Like it's sort of, the concept is there and then we sort of meander around it for a bit. And then there's maybe a scene at the like the 90 minute mark where I'm like, oh yeah. And then, so I guess my question would be, is it worth it to get to that 90 minute mark? Are people going to, do you, did you enjoy the movie up to that point? And then once you get to that point, are you like, well, this was effective? Or are you just like, it's not? And I think what I liked everybody in the movie, I thought like a lot of the dialogue was fun.
Starting point is 00:40:12 I think the performances are great. I think John Goodman especially is terrific in this. I think there's some funny jokes, including one that I, like, it's such a slow burn joke. I'm going to have to talk about it in spoilers, but I really enjoyed. Yeah, I mean, I thought this was worth a price of admission. Also, a rare turn, I actually saw this at a standard viewing at a standard cinema, so it only cost me $20. It didn't cost me $50 to watch this movie. If it had cost me $50, if the only session I could get to was like a $50 Imax or whatever, I might even like, this was a terrible waste of money.
Starting point is 00:40:47 But like, for what I paid, I'm like, yeah, okay. This is fun. I don't think this is going to, I think this is going to get Tom Cruise's Oscar nomination. He's been on a bit of a tear. Yeah. He's having a normal one. He's doing viral videos where he's cheering people up on security footage. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:41:04 Which people are like, we don't buy this. This is staged. And maybe it is. It probably is. But, yeah, I don't think he is good in this. Yeah. And there's an... I saw him do that thing.
Starting point is 00:41:15 There's somebody who shows people the color palettes of their movies and he has to guess. He seemed very into that. Yeah, absolutely. He was like, oh, my goodness, what a good concept. Yeah, it's almost like he has a lot of special interests. I think the problem is that this movie is. too weird and it's for no one really. It's for freaks.
Starting point is 00:41:33 And it should have been... And there's some freak stuff in this that's unpleasant to... Yeah. Like the concepts, but also just like little moments of like, that's gross. Like a vet... Like a vet visibly putting like a... Like a... What do you call one of those temperature...
Starting point is 00:41:48 Yeah, in a cat's rectum. It's just straight up and the cat goes... And it's like... No. You don't win an Oscar for this. Like, not... I don't know if necessarily he's gunning for an Oscar for... for this specifically.
Starting point is 00:41:59 But like, you know, DiCaprio won an Oscar for The Revenant. And that was like his career Oscar. Yeah. So I, like it wouldn't surprise me if Cruz wins an Oscar eventually for something. He will,
Starting point is 00:42:10 but it won't be a movie like this. I think it would be a movie that is about movies. Yeah. I think if he's in a movie where he plays like a failed actor or something like that, that to me would be a move
Starting point is 00:42:23 where it'd go, oh, I see. This is your playing against type. Like he's the biggest movie star ever and he's playing a failed actor, that would be interesting. And if it's a, you know, it's a melancholy, then feel good kind of movie, like a Jay Kelly. For sure, absolutely, yeah. Like, yeah, a movie that kind of a summarization of his career and his achievements and talents and whatever. I mean, you know, the makeup on him is pretty good.
Starting point is 00:42:50 I saw that everyone's so pasty, everybody, the whole thing's so washed out and weird. Yeah. And that's deliberate. Absolutely. But, you know, it feels weird. Apparently, it took six hours initially and he got the team down to an hour. He was like, go faster. Days of thunder.
Starting point is 00:43:05 Yeah. Faster. Whatever. Yeah. Again, you mentioned the sporting cast is great. It looks bizarre and awful and beautiful. There's also some spectacular model work in this as well. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:43:20 The sound design. Really upsetting. Really upsetting, like intentionally, but also when you find out what, what it is, it makes sense? Why is there like loud clangs and awful? Yeah. Gurgling and birdlings and whatever.
Starting point is 00:43:38 Yeah. Somebody, I'm sure on social media said that, or might have been the blank check subreddit, but somebody said, this should have been like a $30 million movie. Absolutely. Like maybe everybody agrees to take a pay cut or whatever. Whatever Birdman cost.
Starting point is 00:43:53 Because then it's a movie for the freaks and it makes that amount of money back. And it's, you know, it's not a success necessarily, but it wasn't a massive loss. Birdman cost $16 to $18 million and made $103. So Keaton would have taken a pay cut for that. Absolutely. And everybody else would have worked for standard wages.
Starting point is 00:44:13 But Keaton in 2014 also wasn't Tom Cruise. No, that's true. He could do that. And it's interesting because this is also like a commentary on art and even Tom Cruise and acting as a whole, I guess. But I also think maybe Tom Cruise will have to make a, we'll have to take a pay cut if you want. Like that could be,
Starting point is 00:44:30 that would be part of the, it's the rock as well doing whatever. That'd be the, that'd be part of the, the Oscar process is, they publicise that he's taking, he's getting paid scale or whatever. Like he's getting paid extra money or whatever.
Starting point is 00:44:44 Absolutely. So before we do spoilers, I guess. Yeah, I know you mentioned this, but like, it is an interesting kind of commentary on the value of arts in times of like,
Starting point is 00:44:55 absolute fucking despair. Yeah. But it's also like, and the futility of it and how art is also often funded, as we've talked about even this episode, of like, billionaires making things as a distraction potentially. And a shield. Yeah, and a shield and art as activism. And what's the point?
Starting point is 00:45:14 And like, why even do anything like this when everything is so bad? But also, isn't that the, isn't, that's the purpose of art. It's to elevate and make social commentary and make, make, people just feel better or escapism. And this, because it's not really, it's interesting because it's not real, it's not escapeism either. No.
Starting point is 00:45:33 It's, it's really dark. Yeah. And upsetting intentionally. Yes. Uh-huh. Yeah. We should do sports.
Starting point is 00:45:41 I liked it. Yeah, me too. I was surprised how much I liked it. And I was like, I was locked in. I would also say I agree with a lot of the criticisms of it. Oh, totally. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:45:51 But, and again, maybe my opinion. I think this is going to age. really well. I think in like 10 years people will be like actually this was, I mean it's not, I don't think it's ahead of the time because it's saying
Starting point is 00:46:03 things that are currently happening. Yeah. But I think this will get re-evaluated Yeah, right. Over the years. I mean, I maybe even, you know, the next time, if I rewatch this and I'm sure I will eventually, maybe I'll be like, no, you know, not so great or whatever. Yeah. But like in the moment, I'm like, it's got the subtlety of being kicked in the face.
Starting point is 00:46:19 That's true, yeah. Yeah, exactly. Yeah, a lot of it is very on the nose. So I'm going to say best movie ever currently. Would you say that some people seeing this, like, critics specifically don't get it? Or they get it and they don't like it? No, I think they get it, but I also think a lot of critics probably have seen
Starting point is 00:46:35 this a number of times before, and perhaps you know, it's not as much of a novelty or this is going to go down in the public like a lead fucking below. Yes, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And I don't think a campaign that's like, yeah, there's a lot of weird freak stuff in this. I don't think
Starting point is 00:46:51 that's going to get most people, you know? So you're saying, what are you saying? I was like, best movie ever. All right. So it's time for spoilers. Yeah. Big time spoilers. Okay.
Starting point is 00:47:00 If you do have any interest in this, yeah. You should skip this moment. Yeah, genuinely. And I think you should probably see it at the movies if you're gonna. Yeah, it is a theatrical experience. It's a theatrical and it's also like, I think the grandeur of it is, adds to the upsetting element of it.
Starting point is 00:47:17 And if you're at home and you're on your phone, I think things will happen and you'll look up and you'll go, oh, okay, all right. And that doesn't. work for much. Doesn't work. Okay, anyway, so the spoiler is, so this movie starts out in what seems to be the present day.
Starting point is 00:47:30 Yeah. But we slowly learn by about the 30 minute mark that actually this movie is set in the future and what we are seeing... The reveal of the future is slower as well than 30 minutes, yeah. We see that this... What we're seeing is the, you know, the story of Digger is actually a play
Starting point is 00:47:47 being put on in the future. So Tom Cruise is not only playing Digger Rockwell. playing an actor who's portraying Digger Rockwell. We also don't know what he actually looks like. Because he is wearing makeup and fake hair and whatever. Yeah. Yeah. Probably looks like Tom Cruise.
Starting point is 00:48:03 He probably does. So the play is called Fossil Fools. Yeah. And it's based on true events that happen. And this is the 20 years prior, maybe. This is the 25th anniversary of this play. And it's very well known and very well loved. It started as this like three person like art performance piece.
Starting point is 00:48:20 Uh-huh. And now it's blown out to this. And this is because Jesse Plemons saw it And he loved it so much And he's rich Because he's Digger Rockwell's actual real life son Who's in the story? No, nephew, sorry, because of Sandra Huller's kid, yeah
Starting point is 00:48:35 And he loved it so much that he funded a big budget version of it So he used Digger Rockwell's money To put on this play Which, you know, satirizes him And at the end of the play Digger has, you know, various disasters have befallen the world and Digger personally. And he's been sort of abandoned on an oil rig. One of his own oil rigs with some members of his family.
Starting point is 00:49:04 And at the end, he chooses to leap off to his death. And everybody, the reason that Jesse Plymouth's character paid for this is because everybody in the theater loved it. It was such a cathartic release that this guy who ruined so much of the world because this, this, you know, You know, the piece of the ice shelf crashed into Europe and thousands of people died. Yeah. You know, and there was a second on shelf. A piece from Russia broke off and caused more disasters. And, you know, everybody hates this guy.
Starting point is 00:49:35 Yeah. You know, so they people go to this and they've been going for years to watch dig a leap off the oil rig to his death at the end. And he loves it. But again, like the idea, and that's what I think is the interesting part is that, yeah, he used Digger's money to do this. Yeah. But that's because he inherited all this money. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:49:58 And Sandra Holla's character runs a sustainable energy which is owned by Digger Ockwell to presumably like for PR purposes and what have you. But Jesse Plymonds character has all this money and he funds this play. But Digger Rockwell presumably lived for like, he's like he's got to be like 70 or 80 or something. And so he lived with Unimaged. more wealth for his entire life. So what did he suffer? He only suffered, he only just, he chose to leave at like 80.
Starting point is 00:50:29 Yeah. After living this incredible life just because the world was ending. Absolutely. And on top of that, like the Jesse Plemons character, he's still a very powerful man from a powerful family. And he runs some sort of AI surveillance company. Yeah, exactly. And so it's hinted at also that he's also terrible, but a different kind of terrible,
Starting point is 00:50:48 who can read the room a bit better. So there's, because there's a subplot, which I think you could probably take out, but I guess maybe, maybe, maybe this is a pointed reason that it's in there. I think so, yeah. Because Tom Cruise's character is a way doing this play and his wife is also coming to visit, but their daughter has gone missing. She was taking a plane to come visit. And then she's disappeared and there, you know, he's, it's distracting him, obviously, because it's really concerning to him. And so he's having trouble. He's thinking about quitting the play and et cetera. But then Jesse Plymins comes to him and goes, well, I have run this company. Yeah. They can track people down. So just let me do that. And he's like, okay. But it's clearly like a Palantir kind of worldwide global surveillance AI company or whatever.
Starting point is 00:51:28 And it's also interesting because like you figure out fairly early on, I guess, that it is the future. But you don't know what kind of future it is. And it sucks. It's awful. And eventually more. Like the phones are better. Yeah. Like sort of.
Starting point is 00:51:38 It's more and more revealed what's happening. Yeah. And then at the end it peels back entirely. Because the play ends. Play ends. And everyone's having the, but then. The alert. The atmosphere.
Starting point is 00:51:49 So everyone's masks on, breathing masks on that are branded as well. Yeah. And then they walk into, I guess it's London, I think. It's somewhere in Europe. Yeah. And the streets are flooded and there's toxins and drones and robots and authoritarianism. But you can still see people getting packages delivered. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:52:10 And fights are starting in the street with the police. And there's still cars that have been washed up on the, you know. The street is like completely flooded. And it's clearly been like that for years. Yeah. Who knows? So it's interesting because like this is this cathartic moment for people. Uh-huh.
Starting point is 00:52:27 Like a brief moment, but in a world that is still absolute shit. Yeah. And probably still run by terrible people. And again, everybody's like, oh, this is so. Feels good. Feels good to do this. And then they go out into this world that's ruined. Just poisoned.
Starting point is 00:52:41 So that's, you know, that's a bit on the nose. Yeah. And again, it's a thing of like Jesse Plemans is still part of this problem. And, you know, and funding this thing is. like, I guess, to make himself feel better, but also there is an element of control as art, as activism is like, well, if I watch this, then I'm, I'm helping, I'm supporting when it's like, but it, but also I guess, like, we don't know how much money this guy has. No, I guess, I mean, it seemed to like. Like, I guess he couldn't save the world himself.
Starting point is 00:53:06 At this point, it's probably too late for him to. Probably. But he could do something. Yeah. Which is the play, I guess. But it does really feel like at the end, for me, it was just like, well, what the fuck is the point? Like that's what like of this and yeah
Starting point is 00:53:21 I know this is further along than where we are But it really does feel like This feels like art is useless Like that's that's that's one of the big messages of this Yeah Because nobody's everything's so terrible In the movie in the movie Yeah I just
Starting point is 00:53:39 Yeah it was it was very interesting Yeah and again maybe if I Had have seen more than like bird man Right I probably would have been like, oh, I've seen all these tricks before or whatever, but I haven't. So I did find that interesting. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:53:55 Okay, now here's my favorite joke in the movie, which only, you can only, only works if you, you know, understand that being spoiled for the concept. So there's an actor in this movie, you mentioned the Robocop three actor. That's interesting. There's an actor in this movie called Byrne Gorman, who you may not know the name, but you know the face. He's been in a bunch of stuff. Oh, yeah. He's one of the scientists in the Pacific Rim movies. Yes.
Starting point is 00:54:18 He looks, I think, somewhere between Lee Evans and Crispin Glover. That's the vibe I get from him. But anyway, he's in this movie. He's some sort of uniform military general. So he's in the play as this character, and he doesn't speak at all. And so we go through the movie. And I see this guy in the movie and I'm like, oh, what's this guy's deal? When is he going to get a monologue or interact with Tom Cruise or he's known actor?
Starting point is 00:54:44 And then he just doesn't. And then at like the 90 minute mark, Jesse Plemons is explaining there's a break in the rehearsal to the play. And Jesse Plemins is explaining that he wanted to use his money to make the most elaborate, spectacular version of this play because it makes the most people happy. And he says, and I even hired extras, even though they told me plays don't have extras. And then Byrne Gorman, as the actor playing the general goes, I'm technically not an extra. and then he gets cut off and that's all he says in the movie. And I'm like, that's such a long form bit.
Starting point is 00:55:23 And also, if he didn't speak, he would have been an extra in the movie. Absolutely. That's good. Yeah. That's a good joke, I think. Yeah. Maybe he does talk.
Starting point is 00:55:32 I can't remember. I know. If he does, it's not a lot. But also, I thought it was really interesting because it's got, that first half and now, it's got a weird look. Yeah. And I'm like, is this model work? What is this?
Starting point is 00:55:44 And you see the inner. are workings of the play and it's the future so it's like using model works and projection model work and projection to do the backgrounds and whatever and then when it's so and then it's suddenly revealed that all that background is a is a force perspective model yeah that's also being projected on like oh he this digger rockwell lives underground in a bunker yeah right but that's the but that's not the reveal the reveal is it's a play and i'm just like what the fuck is like it really did yeah birdman should have tipped you off well yeah exactly it really should have because there are hints that it is a play.
Starting point is 00:56:16 The sound design in itself is like, why does it sound? What is this fucking fast? Like, what is this? And also, there was a moment where they were like, oh, this is a play. And before it was revealed that this was a real thing that happened, it's, like, well, then who cares about this play? Right. Because it's just some fictional. It's a fairy tale sort of thing.
Starting point is 00:56:34 And then it's revealed that it did mostly happen like this. And that is interesting in itself. Yeah, I like, again, I liked it. Yeah, me too. It's for nobody. It's not even for us I would say Yeah
Starting point is 00:56:47 Yeah Yeah What a time to be like What do you think Drew Tom Cruise to this The multiple layers of acting Yep Yep
Starting point is 00:56:55 And it's the play bits I bet he's never I imagine he's not been in a play For real So maybe when he was You know Young in school or something Sure yeah
Starting point is 00:57:03 You know Maybe And it's got a lot of movie magic And camera techniques Yeah Yeah Maybe wanted to work with Sandra Holler He might have yeah
Starting point is 00:57:12 God Weird stuff Have you wanted to work with Robocop 3? He might have wanted to. Who wouldn't want to? Highly recommend, wouldn't you say? I don't know about that. I wouldn't recommend this to anybody I know in my real life.
Starting point is 00:57:25 Yeah. Because they'd be like, why is everyone so weird and pallid and... Oh, there's a bit also, there's a moment in what is, I guess, meant to be the UN? Yeah. And a bunch of people are mannequins. There's just mannequins there. Yeah. And also, like, in that scene, I'm looking at the background.
Starting point is 00:57:42 Yeah. Because at first you see one. Yeah. And then you start noticing that like every 10th person is a mannequin? That's just... Yeah. Yeah, good stuff. I mean, they put a lot of work into it, didn't they?
Starting point is 00:57:54 They sure did. Undeniable. Should we move to the next segment of the show? Yes. What is it? That's what we're reading. Oh, my God. What are we going to read.
Starting point is 00:57:59 That's our favorite segment. Agreed. Tom Cruise Forever. Correct? Tom Cruise forever. No Tom Cruise, never. Got him. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:58:08 I'm doing a thing. You saw a trailer you wanted to talk about, is that correct? Well, I saw the trailer for the social reckoning. Yeah, haven't you ever seen that before? Well, I have, but this was... No, no, this was the newer one, I think. Okay, all right. It was newer and different.
Starting point is 00:58:26 I was going to mention this in the Digger review, just because I was like, there are some parallels there. Pointless art? Well, I was just going to say, because it's about, you know, the idea behind it is, well, you know, look at all the various crimes that Facebook is doing them. They're making people crazy. easy. They are, aren't they? And it's like, well, what if somebody did something about it?
Starting point is 00:58:51 What's, what the, why does Zuckerberg care about this? You know what I mean? He doesn't. It's like the idea of, well, we've reached beyond the point where, he must know that his public, the public perception is like people think he's a toilet man. Yeah, that's why he grew his hair out and change t-shirts or whatever. But does he care? No, I'm sure he doesn't. Yeah. Well, that's the thing, because, you know, I feel like CEOs and politicians, like we are several, just, generations beyond them being able to feel anything. Absolutely. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:59:19 Like back in the olden days, if a piece of political satire satirized a politician for their various dodgy dealings, oftentimes they would resign in shame. Yeah. You know, like this is, you know, like when, when, you know, before we were born, I guess, probably. We should be able to beat them up. That's what I'm saying. But like, you know, they'd be, they'd do some dodgy dealing and there'd be a satire of them
Starting point is 00:59:41 in the newspaper or the radio show or a TV show or a movie or whatever and they would resign. but like that's been bred out of them now. Yep. Like because the own, I think it's because the amount of money that, the amount of money you can cocoon yourself. And, well, the amount of money that is involved in the amount of, you know, life-changing decisions you have to make have increased to a certain level where normal people will be like, I'm going to opt out of that.
Starting point is 01:00:05 Like if you're like, do you want to work at this position, you'll have to fire a thousand people a day. A lot of people would be like, I don't think I want to do that. So it's not worth it. Yeah. But one person will be like, I don't care about that at all. Yeah. That's fine with me. Yeah, you're right.
Starting point is 01:00:19 So now they're right there. The scum rises to the surface. Yeah. So if you're like, well, that person's actually not very good, they don't care because they don't feel anything. Yeah. That's all I'm saying. So I'm like, oh, I'm moving about, oh, actually, oh, the Facebook guy, he made everybody go mad. Well, yeah, but, you know.
Starting point is 01:00:35 But he likes that. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. But otherwise, I watched the first episode of Station 11. Oh, yeah, you didn't imagine. I don't know. Why, were we talking about an end of the world?
Starting point is 01:00:44 I was probably the dog stars. Oh, okay. It does have a similar. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. And I saw, oh, and you know what? I saw the dog stars and also McKenzie Davis is in Blade Runner 2049. She is, which.
Starting point is 01:00:54 And I'm like, delightful. This week, we're doing that for Caravan Garbage. That's right. And I'm like, I'll watch an episode of that. Yeah, you should stick with it. It's a little bit grim, isn't it? You stick with it. It's grim and interesting way.
Starting point is 01:01:03 Stick with it. There's an Atari Links in it. It's melancholic. And there's an Atari Links in. Okay, good. Atari Links, too, I should say. Still working? No, it's not technically in Atari Links
Starting point is 01:01:11 they redesign it as something else Oh, I see, right I mean, that's about the value of art And end of the world Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. So if people haven't seen it, I have...
Starting point is 01:01:19 Well, yeah. Well, why don't you explain it then? Because you're on trend, you're ahead of the trend. Yeah, I got a saw you years ago, it's good. It's about art. It's about living in an airport. There's an Atari Licks in it.
Starting point is 01:01:30 You're thinking of the Terminal, the movie The Terminal. I am thinking of the terminal. The movie I have insane. Yeah, that's about it. Yeah, so it's about a, you know... It's about cults. sort of. Yeah, it starts in what is the present day and there is a, there is a pandemic superflu
Starting point is 01:01:45 happens. And then some of the remainder of the series is about the survivors of that decades in the future. And like a new generation of kids and stuff who don't know anything about our modern world, which I thought was quite fun. They don't care for us. Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:02:01 There's a moment in it where McKenzie Davis's character who's a child in the first episode and he's an adult in the future is explaining. to a young girl how phones would work. Like, oh, you can just, what, and I'd just push your button here in a car, would just show up and pick you up, you know. Is that true? No.
Starting point is 01:02:19 No, that's fantasy. You think of a dragon. I mean, I guess, I am. Well, I watched, with my side of his friend, the last two hours of Avengers Endgame Encore. Oh, what did you kids think about Digger? They loved it.
Starting point is 01:02:34 That's great. They didn't get all of it, but they got most of it. Did they like when the cat got a thermometer? There was a huge raucous applause from everybody in my family. That's right. Yeah, it was good. Anyway, tell me about it.
Starting point is 01:02:46 So I missed the first hour. It was just, look, because my son wanted to see it and I was like, okay, so they got this many hours in the day, whatever. I can only do this session. Mike, we've only got this many hours in a day, all right? But we can, I can buy a ticket and we can miss the first hour and then go in. He's like, yeah, well, he only wanted to see the end stuff,
Starting point is 01:03:02 the new stuff, which I can talk about. But, you know, sitting there watching Avengers Endgame again in cinemas. I'm like, this is a good movie. This is a good movie. They should have called it Avengers Again game. Yeah, they probably should have. But it is that, I mean, it is a very obvious cash grab and a promotional tool for the next Avengers movie that's coming up.
Starting point is 01:03:20 Wow. And it's all, and it's worth seeing in cinemas, probably not. And also, apparently in sub-session, they're not even doing the bonus feature stuff. That's the entire point. Yeah, in Australia it is. It's like, because I looked into it like extensively. I'm like, am I getting tricked into paying?
Starting point is 01:03:36 And I did this again. end for no reason. And I didn't know until the very end that it was the newer version, which I can, and I can talk you through the new stuff if you would like. I would love that. Okay. I've seen one of them. I've seen the one that is, spoilers. Spoilers, spoilers. I've seen the one that is in the TVA and it's Owen Wilson is there and Kay Hui Kwan is there and that other guy is there. Wow. Wow. The universes are colliding. Wow. Thanks, Kay Hee, Kwan. So there's that one, yeah. A bit of professionalism wouldn't go astray. That one's very clearly a nod to like Secret Wars and Battleworld because all the worlds are combining.
Starting point is 01:04:13 If you've read the newest Secret Wars comic, which we have. That's how that starts. It starts with the ultimate universe merging with the regular Marvel universe. But this one is the X-Men universe and another thing. They give you all the numbers and whatever. Oh, and I did see, is this one real? It's the one where Deadpool and Wolverine, they have the bomb. They're holding a bomb?
Starting point is 01:04:33 Is that AI generated? That's not in this one. Okay, right. then what I saw would may have been. I mean, maybe it is, but it's what wasn't the one that I saw. Okay. But the one I did see is, and it's, it's at the very end of Avengers end game, when Peggy Carter and Captain Carter, Steve Rogers, are dancing together.
Starting point is 01:04:50 Mr. and Mrs. Carter. And they're like, we're in love. Yeah. It's the past again because Captain America came back for me. And I'm definitively the guy. This is definitively my Peggy Carter. They didn't say that. I think it is, though.
Starting point is 01:05:01 There's a knock at the door. And then what is very clearly new footage, because Captain America looks different. As in the past. He's got a different wig, and he just looks like a different Chris Evans. And Loki comes to the door. It's like, I think I can help you
Starting point is 01:05:16 because there's an Avengers, a Doomsday situation. Mind if I step in? Yeah, exactly. May I have this dance? It is quite funny because... The world's ending. It's a knock at the door
Starting point is 01:05:26 and Steve Rogers hides around the corner while Peggy Carter answers the door. Coward. And also Loki's like, I know Steve Rogers is here. But that... That, that... James, that, that James feeds into the theory, which is my correct theory, that it is the same universe.
Starting point is 01:05:42 Okay. Well, no, because that Loki is Time Tree Loki. Yeah. Who can go anywhere. Good. We'll find out what happens in the... No, I'm saying because Steve Rogers hid. Yeah, okay.
Starting point is 01:05:52 Because I... Well, he probably hid because also in that universe, all the things that previously happened to Steve Rogers still happened. He's supposed to be missing. Correct. Yeah. Yeah. Whichever reality is. But the male man's not going to recognize him.
Starting point is 01:06:05 They don't think it's the male man. They think it's... It is a male man. A sinister threat. Steve Rogers goes, this is a sinister threat. I better hide. I mean, I don't like answering the door either. You're Captain Carter, aren't you?
Starting point is 01:06:15 I don't like answering the door, so I get it. But what I'm saying is that because in the law of this, in the law of the main timeline, Peggy Carter married a man that Steve Rogers saved, but you never see him. So I think the implication is that it's been, it was Steve Rogers the whole time. Because otherwise, he's stolen another man's wife. Yeah. I mean, it might be also that, yeah, because they even say in the movie. movie that whenever you steal an Infinity Stone, you create a branching timeline.
Starting point is 01:06:40 And you steal another man's wife. And still another man's wife. But on top of that, I don't know. I don't think it is that, but I'm sure they'll answer it definitively all they want. I think they won't. The thing is also, I don't care. So there's that, then there's the emerging universes. Then there's a scene of Dr. Banner, who's underground.
Starting point is 01:06:54 And he's like, Dr. Banner. Baltoned by Gamera. That's a great reference if you know what it is. Yeah. Where he's underground and he's like, oh, it's been 70 days since I had the Spider-Man incident or whatever. But he's like, oh, I'm registering all sorts of weird signals. And then you hear somebody into the room.
Starting point is 01:07:14 And he's like, who are you? And he's like, I'm Dr. Dome. You don't see him. Whoa, I'm Dr. Doom. And then using magic and drink. Is it like, I'm a doctor Dome? Then the camera tips. How's his accent?
Starting point is 01:07:24 Because we're only here. Yeah, it's Robert Dono Jr. doing that. Camera tips over. And then you see there's green magic and ruins on the floor. Some green ruins. So Dr. Doom is there to recruit the Hulk for. Presumably a battle world. Dr. Duh, Dr. Banner, I'm here to recruit you.
Starting point is 01:07:38 I'm using green magic in Reeds. Yeah. So there's that. And then at the... June the Mood day, Dr. Banner. And at the very... I'm Dr. Dume. He's not South African anymore.
Starting point is 01:07:49 No, he's not. I don't think he is. Then at the very, very... And you know, because it used to be, it was just the Iron Man Clang. Yeah, yeah. They've changed that. And when it clangs, you get flashes of Dr. Dume making his mask. Oh.
Starting point is 01:08:00 So they've actually taken what you thought was about... man you idiot and they've changed it to Dr. Doode, you're idiot. Wow. And then it says, you're an idiot at the end. Whoa, and it puts your name then. But it says the words your name on that. But it says the words, your name on. So it applies to everybody. That's right. And then it says brackets for paying for this movie again. That's right. And then it cuts to that somewhat AI generated scene of all the actors who've eaten their popcorn and they all point a laugh. Oh, what? Yeah. And then it just does one of
Starting point is 01:08:28 those videos where a guy has AIed himself into a film set and he's meeting all the stars. Yes. There's a good. They're good. We could make one. And then it cuts to all the stars, meaning they're older selves. And some of them are dead. So they've got angel wings and a halo to indicate they're dead. But they're happy to see themselves.
Starting point is 01:08:44 They're happy to see themselves. And then it cuts to the very obese woman and she's jumping on a rope bridge. What happens to the rope? It just smashes and everybody flies off the bridge. Then she falls through like a pool that's at the top of a skyscraper? Yes. Oh my God. And then it says the big obese woman who crashes through the bridge will return in Avengers
Starting point is 01:09:02 Tombstay. And you're an idiot. And you're an idiot. Anyway, was it worth seeing? I would say, I don't know. I don't think so.
Starting point is 01:09:10 Wow. Because you can watch it at home. Well, I've watched most of these. But, you know, it was, it did have, get me thinking,
Starting point is 01:09:16 watching Avengers End Game. This is a really complex movie to put together. And it works. Yeah. And it's a good movie. It's a tightrope. Yeah. So it made me go,
Starting point is 01:09:27 I don't know, maybe Doomsday will be. Yeah. Well, they got you. It would be good. But, I mean,
Starting point is 01:09:32 as much, as much, as much fun we make of the Russo brothers for making bad movies ever since they finished those Avengers movies. That's not true. What about the one where Mr. Peanut fought everybody on the White House lawn?
Starting point is 01:09:44 Oh yeah, that's a good one. What was that called again? Electric State. Oh, good movie. Good $250 million peanut movie. People remember and they remember the name of it. They don't remember it as Mr. Peanut at the White House. Mr. Peanut goes to the White House.
Starting point is 01:10:01 Yes. Great. Anyway, good stuff. Good stuff. That's all the things we've bought. Join me, Oe Fes your Dimm, Dr. Banner. Hello. Please step into my ruins in green magic.
Starting point is 01:10:13 For recruitment purposes. Oh, recruit me dreams. I think you're South African again. Anyway, it's time for lettuce. I hope so. Yeah. Because what else we're going to do? Nothing.
Starting point is 01:10:23 The classic one was, Letters, oh, letters, we love you. Wow, it's the letter segment. Great. Thanks, man. Thanks for your enthusiasm. It is great, isn't it? Yeah, it's great.
Starting point is 01:10:35 If you want to send a great letter to us, you can. Weekly Planetpot at Gmail.com for an email. Brief email. Brief email. Brief mail. Brief mail. Grief mail. Or there's a thread in the Planet podcast.
Starting point is 01:10:47 Call me Grief Mail. What are you doing? I don't know. Is that a reference to a guy we know? Or is that a different thing? No, that was a call me ishmael reference. Oh, okay, right. But I guess he's sad.
Starting point is 01:11:00 I don't know. Planet Broadcasting Great Mates Group is also we... Great Mets Group and Facebook, which is good. Yes. Which is a good website. That's right.
Starting point is 01:11:08 What do you got in terms of letters? This is from Sam. Sam. Says, hi Mason and James. Hi, Sam. I started the question by reversing the names to gain Mesa's favour. And it worked.
Starting point is 01:11:16 All right. Subject line, there are other lanterns. Why don't I care? Hi, Mason James. There we go. We did that. Watching lanterns has been enjoyable so far and I'm excited to spend more time
Starting point is 01:11:27 with these characters in the new DCU. With that said, I had scarce knowledge of the green lantern beyond some names and powers when the show started. I had no idea there were other lanterns. I knew about Sinestro, but I figured they colored him yellow because they needed something to contrast green. Oh my God.
Starting point is 01:11:41 Cool to learn about these new lanterns, but I'm not sure how much I care to deepen my knowledge beyond whatever shows up in the show. What's essential law for a popular character that you do not care to learn about whatsoever? Essential law for a popular character that did you not need to know? Do you not care to know or do not need to know? Well, I think we should probably talk about lanterns first. Sure, let's do that. I would say you don't need to know this.
Starting point is 01:12:00 No, absolutely not. For the longest time, Billy Joel style, there weren't additional lantern colors. No. It was the green lanterns and then Sinestro, who's one of the green lanterns who goes bad. He acquires a yellow lantern and a yellow ring. Which I think they're building in the lanterns. They might be doing that. But that wasn't, that was just, the idea, originally that yellow lantern ring is powered by green lantern energy.
Starting point is 01:12:27 So it gained more power when he fought other lanterns. And that was just it. But then when a writer named Jeff Johns got a hold of the green lantern mythos, he's like, what if there were a bunch of, what if every color of the rainbow had its own lantern core? And we said that would be interesting. I don't know if it is that. I don't know if it's kind of interesting.
Starting point is 01:12:45 But I think they're trying to very much simplify this TV series. I don't think they're going to add all the different colored lanterns yet. So in the TV show, we meet a character who Carol Ferris, who is Hal Jordan's on again, off again girlfriend. And in the comic book, she was a character called Star Sapphire. And then later on they went, okay, well, what if the Star Sapphires were all so lanterns?
Starting point is 01:13:09 So that's the thing. But initially, that wasn't... Yeah. But they've sort of tied in all the old stuff. But you don't need to know. No, absolutely not. And anything you need to know, they'll explain in the show, presumably. Or just not explain it. Yeah. Because at this point, episode eight is not out. We might all get Damon Lindeloft. Oh my God, I would love that.
Starting point is 01:13:25 Right. Well, it looks like there is going to be a season two because they just hide another rider, but it hasn't mean officially green gone. Let lanterns. Also, there is a lot of people have suspected that and again, we haven't seen the last episode yet, that it's going to end with John Stewart acquiring
Starting point is 01:13:38 the yellow lantern ring. Because one of the earliest promotional photos is, or like the most promotional art is a shot of him and he's suave in yellow. Yeah, maybe. It could potentially happen. What's essential law for a popular character that you do not care to learn about whatsoever?
Starting point is 01:13:55 So, I mean, the problem is I do know a lot of that stuff. Yeah, see, that's the thing. I don't, yeah. You've got to get up pretty early in the morning to the we don't know your law, brother. I guess something, GI Joe. Okay, sure. I don't care about any of their different.
Starting point is 01:14:12 So it's interesting. Springfield. I can't. Springfield multi-level marketing. That is interesting. Cobra started as multi-level marketing. Yeah, I guess there's elements of it that is interesting. But in the whole, like, I don't care about any of the G.I. Joe universe or any of the people.
Starting point is 01:14:25 Absolutely. That's a good one. I don't even care if some kind of copious. snake man makes a snake into a spear and then spears another one in the heart and you think he's going to die but he doesn't i don't care in the giro-jim animated movie in the 80s i don't care and i haven't even seen it wow yeah wow um uh yeah i don't know do you want to know what goku's backstory is and if you had a monkey tale he does have a monkey tale does you want to know about it no do you care about his backstory no do you care about whether he defeated margin boo see now the the longer you talk about it now I am curious as to whether he defeated Marginboo.
Starting point is 01:14:57 Okay. I can just tell you. Did he? Probably did. Wow. I'm pretty sure he probably did. I don't know. I mean, I'm...
Starting point is 01:15:04 With the help of Vegeta. Yeah. Maybe they morphed together using earrings. What about Broly? Yeah, big versus super-sane whatever guy. That's right. Born super-sayan or whatever. Yeah, for sure, man.
Starting point is 01:15:15 I know I... A lot of the time, I like knowing the law more than actually, you know, trudging through the episodes of something. Absolutely. Absolutely. Especially something like a Dragon Ball. I love the Warhammer 40,000 law, but I'm not playing any tabletop Warhammer 40,000. But you're looking forward to Henry Cavill's adaptation of it? Yes, I am. Are you really?
Starting point is 01:15:34 I'm sad and stoic. I don't know, look at how big my gun is. It looks like a cartoon gun. But it's not. No, it's serious. Serious gun. Looks like a child's drawing of a gun, but it's a big serious. Serious.
Starting point is 01:15:47 Yeah. Look at all the skulls I have in places you wouldn't expect. If you do want to know anything. Armpit skulls. Oh, wow. Yeah. If you don't know anything, there's a YouTube short about it. Absolutely.
Starting point is 01:15:58 They'll give you a brief rundown. I will sit and listen to anybody explain the law of their favorite thing. Really? Me? Yeah. Come on, man. Me. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:16:06 Okay. Would you listen to this letter from Steve Major? Which is Mr. Beast Law. You're all about the Mr. Beast law. I really am. Steve says, at this point, how would you feel if Warner Brothers released a Batgirl on HBO? Do you think it would be a gift to the fans or would have confused the brand? I think they'll do it in between regime changes.
Starting point is 01:16:22 Oh, probably, yeah. Because it will, if they do it. it or it will leak because it will it would just confuse people and it's probably not great I don't know that for a fact and the last thing Michael hit Batman was in was the Flash yeah and it was good
Starting point is 01:16:35 so no I don't think they will at this point yeah and people will be like are we going to get that Batgirl in the new movie no we're not I would doubt it very much so yeah I would be interested yeah I don't even have to finish it no just give me look at it give it give it a look with all the wires
Starting point is 01:16:53 give me the raw footage and roll footage. That's right. Or I'll get AI to make it. What would Batgirl movie look like? Good question. Go on. Oh, this is an email from Ryan.
Starting point is 01:17:04 Ryan? Good afternoon, James and Ryan. He says, boo-hoo-hoo, James and Mesa. Gentlemen, I went to the side of the Atlanta Australian bakery and researched that they sell Anzac Biscuits, Lamington cake. They're just called Lamingtons. Come on, man.
Starting point is 01:17:18 What are you talking about? A pie inspired by the cherry ripe, which is the famous... A pie? A pie. inspired by Cherry Ripe, which is famously the candy bar you eat if you want to fail a breathalyzer. Is that true?
Starting point is 01:17:32 If you eat he'd eat heaps of them, apparently. I mean, if you ate heaps of anything, you'd fail a breathalyzer because you'd vomit into it. Yeah. Which is a fail. Yeah, you'd be drunk on overnight oats. Aussie meat pies, makes sense.
Starting point is 01:17:42 A Ned Kelly pie. What's that? It's filled with dead cops. A tin can filled with dead cops? That's exactly. Yeah. Sausage rolls, several pasties, and honestly, some great-looking Australian
Starting point is 01:17:54 inspired takes on pies, desserts, and meals, okay. All right. But what I was wondering, while you both were guessing what they might have, was the low-hanging fruit of fairy bread. Oh, okay, yeah. It always goes down a treat. I agree. I should we explain fairy bread?
Starting point is 01:18:08 It's white bread, basic-ass white bread, butter or margarine, but preferably butter, and then hundreds of thousands, or sprinkles, as you might call them. And it's just sugar and bread. I prefer the long sprinkles. Yeah, that's not traditional. Yeah, that's okay. Would you prefer, because sometimes you'll do, like, A chocolate sprinkle.
Starting point is 01:18:25 I love a chocolate sprinkled very, very. Yeah. Interesting. There's nothing wrong with a bit of variety. It is the spice of life after all. That's true, yeah. Anyway, we were curious about it because we're like how many possible Australian treats could they be. That many at least.
Starting point is 01:18:38 Could they do a kangaroo meat pie? Probably. Yeah, I hope so. They're just called Lamington's. They're called Lamington Cake. I hope they didn't say Lamington Cake on the thing. I mean, it's a sponge cake, right? So it's not incorrect.
Starting point is 01:18:50 That's probably true. It's probably incorrect. Yeah. Yeah. Interesting. That's right. Out of those, what's your favorite? Ned Kelly pie?
Starting point is 01:18:59 Probably a Ned Kelly pie, yeah. It's got a piece of that train you tried to derail. What's a Ned Kelly pie? I don't know, man. But it'd have to be in a tin can, right? You think so, yeah. You think so. Tin can with a bullet hole in it.
Starting point is 01:19:13 Yeah. Or maybe a bullet in the middle. You know how like those Christmas puddings used to have a coin in him? Oh, yeah. Tin can with a pie and then a bullet. A horrible thing to put in food. Yep. Just a metal object.
Starting point is 01:19:25 Noah Quinette says, who would you award the most inconsistent movie quality award to? I nominate Guy Ritchie. The last week movies is released were real wet farts, but watching the Netflix series of The Gentleman, I'm amazed how good it is. Good point. That's interesting.
Starting point is 01:19:38 Is that because all his passion has gone to the gentleman? That happens quite a lot, I think, where... He's distracted. Yeah. And he can't make an average heist movie. Oh, he can make an average heist movie. Oh, no, he can do it, but he can't make a non-average highest movie, I should say. Yeah, I mean, I made a big movie.
Starting point is 01:19:53 about wanting to watch his most recent movie in the grey. Ruz de Gere. Oh yeah. And I didn't finish it. I didn't finish Rurs de Gere either. I didn't like his version of Inglorious Bastards either. Okay. Interesting.
Starting point is 01:20:04 Little Glasses, Alan Richardson, on a boat or whatever. Little Glasses bastards. Little Glasses bastards. Ridley Scott's very inconsistent. That's true. But would you say that's a more recent thing? Because his filmography prior to like 15 years ago is pretty good. And he's mostly bad.
Starting point is 01:20:21 I like the dog stars and the Marshall. The Martian and The Duel. So there's some good ones in there. A deal, yeah. I looked this up as well as people were considered inconsistent. And M. Knight, Shyamalan's name came up. I would say he's settled back into a rhythm. Agreed.
Starting point is 01:20:37 And he has a particular style. And you might not like it, but I think he is consistent. I agree with that. What's his, remain? It's based on a book? Yes. So he and Sparks wrote a book together. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:20:49 It's called What If a Ghost fell in love with you? It looks like a sixth-cent sequel, doesn't it? Absolutely. Is it, though? Probably. Because I guess if the book is just out there, we could read it and find out. Well, this quickly ties in if you don't mind. Angela says, I still want to know if you guys believe in ghosts.
Starting point is 01:21:03 Do you believe in ghosts? No, I wish I did. I wish Mason did also. I don't believe in ghosts. But we don't know everything, do we? I know everything. There's holes in our law, for example, of certain characters. I should say I know for a fact ghosts exist, but I don't believe in the book.
Starting point is 01:21:16 I know everything. Is that annoy them? It annoys me. Yeah, for sure, for sure, man. No, I don't believe in ghosts. Again, it would be lovely. What if there were ghosts? We could talk to them.
Starting point is 01:21:26 Ask them about old tiny stuff, like sewing kits and whatever. Oh, yeah. What kind of sewing kit did you use? Oh, the one that was in your house. Okay. Needlepoint work. Needle point. It's good.
Starting point is 01:21:37 Yeah. How's the food? Terrible? Yeah. So when, until you repair your clothes? No, I don't do that. Just throw them out and get new ones. Everything's really cheap.
Starting point is 01:21:45 Kids, kids making clothes, man. Yeah. That's a future. Yep. Yep. Better than beat a ghost. Oh, you had that. Well, we have it been on a much larger stuff.
Starting point is 01:21:52 Yeah, we have a much larger. What happened is there was some workhouses for children. Somebody got rid of them and then we brought them back. Yeah, we got them. We brought them back. But we don't have to look at them. They're not around. Yeah, they're not here. They're somewhere else. Yeah. We don't even know. They're not in our neighbourhood. So it doesn't matter. Doesn't matter to us. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. What's another letter?
Starting point is 01:22:08 Here's another letter. Oh my God. A lot of AI slot memes that I've saved to my phone. Fantastic. Cameron says, my grandma loves the alien movies. Cool. On the back of last week's letter segment with the Granddad and Mum movies, I thought I would throw my hat in the ring. My grandma is obsessed with the alien films
Starting point is 01:22:23 and has watched them all multiple times. I believe she told me she had seen Alien Romulus five times last year when she found it on streaming. Oh, damn. I spoke to her about the law, and she knows pretty much everything that can be found in the films, apart from the fact that Jesus is implied to be an engineer.
Starting point is 01:22:37 She didn't believe me, so I sent her the Prometheus Caravan of Garbage as proof. Give up the good work, Cameron from England. Thank you for showing your grandma out of video. And I have another email about dad movies. Nathan has emailed in to say, Since people have been sending in their dad's favorite movies as we try and figure out what a dad movie is,
Starting point is 01:22:55 I figured I'd contribute. Oh, great. One movie my dad thinks is absolutely brilliant is John Travolta's Gotti, the famously terrible mob boss movie, purely because it's a mob movie. He also does not like Top Gun Maverick, which is weird because I thought that would the perfect move for him.
Starting point is 01:23:10 My dad is weird when it comes to other dads and dad movies because my dad also absolutely loves terrible movies you can switch your brain off to. He recently watched Mortal Kombat 2, and when I asked him what he thought he replied, absolutely terrible, can't recommend enough. I'm not sure we'll ever understand dad movies.
Starting point is 01:23:24 I think that is probably true. I think that's the ultimate conclusion. You figured it out. You figured it out. We don't know. Which is weird because I think you could probably guess our tasted movies, but what happens when you become a dad? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:23:37 And why hasn't it happened to you yet? I don't know. Probably because I'm cool. And I'm at the forefront of technology and top culture. That's probably true. That's why I got this little charm, Gremlin that screams at me. Ah!
Starting point is 01:23:48 Pretty good and expensive. Very expensive. Goddy was one of those movies that was that was then because it was reviewed badly but the reviews were like see for yourself maybe you'd like it nobody likes it but maybe you'd like it
Starting point is 01:24:03 yeah God dad movies goes on or not dad movies and grandma movies oh yeah because I'm thinking like my grandma who's been dead for like 20 years I'm like she wouldn't have liked the alien movies
Starting point is 01:24:14 but we're living in a different era of grandmas now aren't we that's so true isn't even know uh Zanda says if you had to introduce someone who had next ever seen a superhero film before, what would be the one that you would choose? Iron Man 2008. Iron Man 2, interesting. No, no, not even Iron Man 1 or 3. No, I said James Iron Man number 2008. A said, would you have to have seen Iron Man 2 to watch Iron Man 2000 and 8? Yes, you would, James.
Starting point is 01:24:38 Otherwise, you wouldn't get it. I think that's a good choice because it's a real movie also. Thank you. What's another one? I think you could show Superman or is it too wacky. If you want them to be like, wow, superhero movies are real and good. Maybe you wouldn't pick Superman. No, I think it's got a good message and it's got a nice core to it. It's got that dog in it. It's got that dog in it. And it's got it, it does have that dog in it.
Starting point is 01:25:01 And it's got like a genuinely evil-threatening Lex Luthor. It makes sense that, you know, Superman would have difficulty dealing with them. For sure, for sure, yeah. You know. Okay. Yeah. Great stuff. Two great choices.
Starting point is 01:25:14 What about would you show them Batman v. Superman Dawn of Justice? No, I wouldn't. Why not? I don't know. I guess I'm biased against it. You are biased against. I guess I'm a hated towards it for no reason. Well, people are saying now that Paramount has merged with Warner Brothers and ate it up like a big
Starting point is 01:25:27 Pac-Man. Numb-Num, num, maybe we're going to be getting this Zach Snyder universe returns or whatever. Hell yeah. Hell yeah, please, yes, please. No, I don't know returns again. Anything can.
Starting point is 01:25:35 Wow, here we both are. Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill. We're back and now it's the future. Time to fight in exactly the same way as we did the first time. Isn't that a real bookend, they could say? Maybe Green Arrow will be here. Which one of us is Jesus this time? Both of us.
Starting point is 01:25:49 Both of us are. They're both been crucified. Wow. Wow. Makes you think, doesn't it? Yeah. Yeah. Uh, yeah. Is that the show? Uh, yeah. Ah, yeah.
Starting point is 01:25:59 Folks, thank you so much for listening. Thank you for telling your friends about the podcast. I will. Thank you for leaving a five-star review on your podcast app of choice. If you do so, James will find it. He'll read it out right now. I'm actually finding it right now. This is from RK 2003 dollar sign, dollar sign from the USA. He says, I've been only listening to this podcast for a couple of weeks,
Starting point is 01:26:17 and it's already been one of the best podcasts I've ever heard. Wow. Wow. And Ethan was cool from the USA says, this is one of the only movie podcasts I've listened to that actually sounds like two friends having a casual conversation. It's the best. Never mind that James claimed that Barry Levinson was responsible for Tootsie
Starting point is 01:26:33 when he only did an uncredited rewrite on the screenplay. I don't know where he got that Barry Levinson did Tootsy info from. It was directed by Sidney Pollock, you scrub. Wow. Well, I guess we know why you were cool. Yeah, that's so rude. Rude. Is rude.
Starting point is 01:26:48 More like. Also, we know that when we did that soldier review that it's actually not Connie Britton, it's Connie Nielsen. But it's too late now. Yeah, I know. It's too late to change it. Couldn't take it out. We said it three or four times.
Starting point is 01:27:01 When we did that one on Serenity, I kept saying Mark Strong, but it's actually the other guy, Jeremy Strong. Sometimes we don't know the names. It's way too late. It's way too late. Folks, if you want to get into contact with us, you can go to weekly planet pod at gmail.com. Yay.
