Starting point is 00:00:00 As women, our life stages come with unique risk factors, like high blood pressure developed during pregnancy, which can put us two times more at risk of heart disease or stroke. Know your risks. Visit heartandstroke.ca. Red hot comic book movie news. Shooting up your bowl. The Weekly Planet. the Weekly Planet, official podcast of comicbookmovie.com. My name is James, editor of that website. With me as always is my extra special co-host, Nick Mason.
Starting point is 00:00:38 Aww. There you go. Thanks pal. Did you get a haircut? I did. I noticed these things. Thanks man. Extra special.
Starting point is 00:00:44 Two weeks ago. Aww. No. No. Straight into get a haircut? I did. I noticed these things. Thanks, man. Extra special. Two weeks ago? No. Straight into the news? Okay. All right. Did you see the controversial Batgirl cover, which was controversial on the internet? I did see that controversial cover, yes. You have to say your thoughts on that, man.
Starting point is 00:00:56 Oh, I have to say some thoughts on it. Okay, so for people who didn't see it, it was sort of a, it's the most recent Batgirl cover. Well, it's a variant cover. Yeah, it is. It's not the official one. Yeah. But it's the Joker sort of in a similar style to how he looked in the Killing Joke. Yes.
Starting point is 00:01:13 And he's holding Batgirl Barbara Gordon hostage. Yes. And she's looking terrified on the cover. And he's drawn like lipstick on her. Like a Joker smile kind of thing. Yeah. kind of like a joker smile kind of thing yeah and this is this is controversial because the in the killing joke the alan moore uh batman story from the 80s he held her hostage and shot her and she lost the use of her legs for a long time yeah hilarious so funny what that is a good joke
Starting point is 00:01:39 uh and plus the naked photos oh yeah that happened as well yeah um yeah so people are up in arms about this and fair enough look what's interesting and I'll find the photo of it this went around on Tumblr and etc if you change her
Starting point is 00:01:53 because she's looking terrified if you change her the expression on her face yeah it becomes a much better cover have a look at that check that out take my phone
Starting point is 00:02:01 take it take it oh yeah it does too right so you change it from her looking terrified to being like like pissed off i'm gonna get out of this and then i'm gonna hurt you very badly yeah and it looks like it's a much better cover you're absolutely right but yeah no um and it was retracted yes it was the request the artist yeah and look because i don't
Starting point is 00:02:21 he didn't mean any offense by it it He said that it was, you know, it was just supposed to be a homage to the killing joke and whatever. I think it doesn't really, it doesn't really do the character justice. I guess there's that, there's that side of it. Do you know what I mean? Like what that character has become? Because that run apparently is quite good. What I've heard.
Starting point is 00:02:37 The current one. The current one. Yeah, it is good. Yeah. But you know, it gets people talking about comics. So that's something. Yeah. Look, I understand why it's been drawn like that
Starting point is 00:02:48 because obviously they have a history, like a very serious history, those two characters. And it would make sense. But at the same time, Batgirl's characterisation is a character who is no longer afraid of the Joker. Like it's a concern, but she is beyond this now. Yeah, she's come through it. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:06 I think it's interesting though because, you know, Batgirl was shot in the 80s and then she quit being Batgirl. She became Oracle and she became, you know, one of the very few characters you can think of who is a person with a disability who is also a superhero and who could, you know, be a role model to other people with disabilities in the real world and then when they rebooted the dc universe yet again they were like oh she had some physical therapy and now she's fine kind of thing and now that stuff still
Starting point is 00:03:35 happened yeah exactly and it was like well she did it for a couple years now she's fine again yeah which you know it takes away a character with a with a disability in the dc universe and also batgirl had been replaced by uh stephanie brown's formerly the character spoiler yeah and she had her own series which i thought was really good like i really enjoyed that series up until it got cancelled we have we have a lot of great ideas for this no you don't because barbara gordon's back um so i don't know i've got mixed feelings about it generally. Yeah, yeah. And again, I think it's a case of, you know, the editors or whatever are like,
Starting point is 00:04:12 well, we enjoyed reading about Barbara Gordon back in the day. Yeah. Now it's our turn to write this sort of stuff, so let's bring her back kind of thing. Yeah, look, mixed feelings. Mixed feelings, sure. Yeah. Okay, all right. I see why the cover was drawn.
Starting point is 00:04:24 Yep. But you can't, if somebody's like, look, this offends me because of these triggers and all this sort of stuff, you can't be like, no, it doesn't. Like, if somebody's, you know, it's okay. You know, we often talk about, you know, Mark Miller or somebody like that, you know, writer Mark Miller, and he's like, I can say whatever I want because of,
Starting point is 00:04:42 I don't think he's ever actually said that. He screamed at once. Oh, great. Okay. But you can't, you know, you can say, you can be like, well, for a speech, I can say whatever I want. I don't think he's ever actually said that. He screamed at once. Oh, great. Okay. But you can't, you know, you can be like, well, freedom of speech, I can say everything I want, but also people can react however they want. That's true as well.
Starting point is 00:04:52 You can't be like, well, you've got to shut up and take this because I'm expressing myself artistically. Well, people can have their opinions. Yeah. Well, I'm offended by this for these reasons. Exactly. It's the same way that like that anything is subjective, whether or not it's good or bad or whatever.
Starting point is 00:05:03 Yeah. It's the same. Anybody can be offended as well. Nobody's right or wrong, Mason, except for Mark Millar. Yeah, he's always right. Sometimes he's not, though. It's weird. Sometimes he's very wrong.
Starting point is 00:05:15 More DC news, though. Sometimes his writing is dumb. The Rock says that he thinks he's going to appear in the Justice League as Black Adam. Oh, he thinks that. Yeah, he's like, yeah, I think he's going to appear in the Justice League as Black Adam. Oh, he thinks that. Yeah, he's like, yeah, I think he's going to show up. The Shazam movie comes after, I think, both Justice League movies. Right. So I guess he might turn up as a villain of some sort.
Starting point is 00:05:36 Because he'd have to be the villain in the Shazam movie. Yeah. And then they're going to make him an anti-hero, apparently. Because I think they're going that way in the comics as well. Uh-huh. So, yeah, do you want to see The rock in the justice league yeah yeah yeah good you're happy he's black adam or would you prefer him to be somebody else no i think he's got a great look for that not uh shazam or captain marvel himself no okay yeah also he's a sweet vine from the rock what's this pretty? Choo-choo, bitches.
Starting point is 00:06:05 Pretty good, right? He's throwing a little train whistle. That is pretty good. That was on Twitter. It's pretty good. Actually, Fast and Furious is out in a couple of weeks. We're doing an episode on that. Okay, great.
Starting point is 00:06:16 Yeah. All right. You cool with that? Will it help or hinder that I've not seen any of the other ones? It won't do anything. Great. Just remember that they're family. They're always family?
Starting point is 00:06:24 Yes. They're fam. Okay, good family they're always family they're fam okay good they're fam and they're out there great there was another there was a big uh news as well at the flash this week yes which you didn't watch but you know because i know because the internet internet because i looked at the internet for a fraction of a second and everything was spoiled for me yeah yeah that's it uh So they revealed who, what's his name? Harrison Wells. Harrison Wells is on The Flash.
Starting point is 00:06:46 So if you haven't seen that. Tom Cavanagh. Yes. He's secretly actor Tom Cavanagh. If you haven't. It's not real. It's a fictional thing. They've made it up.
Starting point is 00:06:55 They're acting. If you haven't seen that episode of The Flash and you haven't been on the internet for a second, then skip forward a bit. Two minutes? I don't know. So basically it was revealed that he is Eobard Thorne and he's from a couple hundred years in the future so he is he is a distant relative of he's he's a descendant of eddie thorne who is who is the
Starting point is 00:07:17 he's not an antagonist he's he's a nice guy in the in the in the show though it's about coming promos he's like shooting cops and stuff but But you know, maybe he's brainwashed. That's what I'm thinking. That's my theory, brainwashed. He's brainwashed and he's been put in the suit. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:31 Okay, sure. But no, Harrison Wells, you see it, right? You know, Harrison Wells, the reverse flash was trapped in that force field.
Starting point is 00:07:40 Did you see that episode? Yeah, I did. That was a hologram. Great. And he can split himself. He can move so fast that he can be in two places at once and look like he's running okay cool he can run back and forth it's it's i didn't want that many spoilers jeez no that's all right yeah and it's a luge but yeah david wanted to know what we thought of that you were saying before
Starting point is 00:07:58 you thought that they made this up as they went along yeah i strongly feel that you reckon yeah do you reckon that's one of those things they threw it out there and then saw what the fan theories were and went, oh, yeah, we'll just do that. Yeah, definitely. Because there's no, like, I think they're like, we'll give him some vague association with the future. Like, he's reading his future newspaper and he's, you know,
Starting point is 00:08:19 he's concentrating on doing something in the future, but I don't think they knew what it was yet. Okay, right. Because otherwise, like Harrison, there's no comic book storyline where Harrison, there's a character called Harrison Wells and he's revealed to be. No.
Starting point is 00:08:31 There's a Harrison Wells, but he's like a one panel character. Okay. But there's no point where they're like, here's this character and then it's revealed that he has some connection to the reverse Flash. Right, right. Like if they were going to do that, they'd make him Hunter Zolomon
Starting point is 00:08:43 or they'd make him something else. But't that spoil the twist probably but it's not right i don't i mean i i genuinely thought there's been no there was no there was no comic book storyline where eobard thorne went into the past and took the name of harrison wells or took the place of a star labs researcher or anything like that so yeah good point i reckon it's a it's a it's a wing in its situation. But I think as well, I genuinely thought at a point, I think I said this on the show, that he wasn't going to be the reverse Flash because it was so obvious that he was the reverse Flash.
Starting point is 00:09:12 Right, yeah. Do you know what I mean? But it turns out, but look, to be fair, it was a well-handled twist and it was a good scene. And again, if you haven't seen it, he kills Sisko. Yep. He like vibrates his hand and like puts it through his chest. But then at the end of the episode,
Starting point is 00:09:26 the flash goes back in time to a week prior. So all that's void. Great. So make of that what you will. You know what's great in like a network TV show? Yeah. Introducing time travel as a means to fix things. A game-breaking.
Starting point is 00:09:39 Yeah, a game-breaking situation there. Just a game-breaking power. It'd have to be one of those things where he'll use it again to go back and try and save his mother who's harrison wells kills and then he's like we better not use this again yeah exactly it's too much power for one until they have to use it yeah exactly yeah but no it's a good until the writers again paint themselves into a corner they're like well we'll just use the time travel again yeah that's exactly it because you can't anybody else who's killed from now on you just be like we'll just just go back in time yeah go back 10 minutes how much is that going to change
Starting point is 00:10:09 just for the record if i were writing on the flash yeah that's exactly what i do like and i would go and i would read fan if i were for any of these shows i would read the fan theories on the internet go oh yeah absolutely i'll do that that is a good idea i'll look 10 000 people on reddit are in favor of this theory let's do it all right yeah you're right yeah we should do a fan theories episode actually great yeah you love fan theories i do email james all your fan theories no i mean you know ones that make more sense of the actual thing that happened yeah yeah great you know there's the neville long bottom was really the chosen one and harry right. Like, you know, there's the Neville Longbottom was really the chosen one and Harry Potter. Right, exactly. Or, you know... Harrison Wells was the Flash. Right, fan theories that fix...
Starting point is 00:10:49 Yeah. Like a broken movie or a broken TV series or something like that. If you go, well, it turns out that that guy was this guy, then, you know? Yeah, exactly. You know what I'm talking about? I bloody know.
Starting point is 00:10:59 I bet there's tons worth that guy with this guy. It would fix everything. Definitely. Naveen also wants to know, what do we think of the Cricket World Cup? That's one of the most... Sport. Big fan?
Starting point is 00:11:13 No. Even people I know who like cricket, who isn't you or me, are like, this has been going for way too long. Oh, really? Because there's a whole lot of teams that shouldn't be there, apparently. No one cares about this. I don't even care about this. But they've got like, I don't know, Ireland and stuff.
Starting point is 00:11:26 And Ireland are great, apparently, as a country. I think that's nice. But yeah, apparently no business being there. Or they do. I don't know. We'll let this out. Sure. Anyway, I actually have a potentially another spoilery
Starting point is 00:11:42 and also Weekly Planet exclusive thing here, which sometimes we get every now and then. I think this might be the second one. Love it. Yeah, we're great. And I don't even know if the first one turned out to be true. This is a Star Wars-y kind of spoiler as well. Star Wars-y kind of.
Starting point is 00:11:56 Yeah. It's not a Star Wars spoiler. It's Star Wars-y. Okay, great. But this is from, you remember Ali who wrote in with the Michael Caine story? Yes. Yeah, that was a good story. The sound story.
Starting point is 00:12:08 Yeah, so you can listen to the Kingsman episode. We talk about that. The Ali-Michael Caine team up. Yes. The classic team up where got him out of work. Oh, he's his brother. Yeah, that's right. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:18 He was at the wedding on the weekend with some old university chums, two of which worked on Star Wars. One is a sad person and one looking after all the greens. I'm assuming that's like green screens, I guess. Don't they use blue screen anymore? I think they do.
Starting point is 00:12:33 Maybe it's like... Like a bowl of greens. Yeah, or maybe it's like... Nobody touch these greens! These are Harrison Ford's greens. Or it's a disparaging term for a group of people. Maybe it's the disparaging term for a group of people. Maybe it's the Irish.
Starting point is 00:12:47 Whoever we've determined have no business being in cricket or in Star Wars. Yeah, we've got to put the Greens in this. And I have a bit of juicy gossip for you too, that I only took a couple of tequila shots for them to forget their non-disclosures. I hope nobody gets fired from this. I hope everyone gets fired. Harrison Ford on down. Everyone nobody gets fired from this. I hope everyone gets fired. So, yeah. Harrison Ford on down.
Starting point is 00:13:07 Everyone loses their job for this. Firstly, for visitors from Disney who visited during the filming, they had loads of old props from the movies, including the original latex masks of Admiral Ackbar. Oh, yes. Which is why he's rumoured to be back, but it could be a trap. Could be. How do you mean? Well, it could be like a bear trap.
Starting point is 00:13:23 Like, you go to grab it and it takes your arm off. Oh trap in it yeah that would be yeah actually that makes a lot of sense secondly and this is spoilers disney executives are known for their cruelty secondly this is uh the spoilers uh it's confirmed and confirmed separately by the sound guys and the green guys oh yeah the green guys can't be trusted no they can't. They'll steal your lucky charms. Adam Driver is playing Leia and Han Solo's son, and he is a Sith we see in the trailer. You called it, sort of. I think we did say that. We did sort of call it, yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:53 We did sort of call it. Thirdly, there's a skeleton crew during filming of which was referred to as the OMG moments this summer to prevent slash reduce leaks. So there you go. Weekly Planet exclusive. Yes, we did it again. I mean, if this is true.
Starting point is 00:14:06 Right, sure. It would be an elaborate trick. But yeah, that wouldn't surprise me that they're doing a skeleton crew thing. They do that for like big major scenes. Like, you know, the Nick Fury Avengers reveal at the end of Iron Man. Like that was skeleton crew.
Starting point is 00:14:19 Right, exactly. And you know, the Captain America in Times Square scene. Yep. That wasn't skeleton crew because it was in public in Times Square. Sure, thousands of people saw it. Those are two examples. Do you see what I've done? Oh, yeah, you've done.
Starting point is 00:14:30 One is the opposite of the other. Yeah, correct. You've nailed that. But yeah, that's pretty cool, I guess. Hey, here's some news. This happened last week, but I forgot to mention. A lot of people on Twitter mentioned it. And it's only of interest to me, I think.
Starting point is 00:14:42 You know how all the Marvel uh the marvel netflix series are coming out daredevil and etc boy do i boy do you well uh there was some casting news one of which like these are all good but uh one of which is rob morgan who was on person of interest yeah he's going to play turk barrett yes which is important because turk barrett is a small-time crook in the marvel universe who has played – he was mostly the mauler, like an armoured supervillain called the mauler. But on one occasion, he was also – he wore the Stilt-Man armour. So, fingers crossed.
Starting point is 00:15:16 Look, as we know, I wanted Idris Elba to play Stilt-Man. Idris for Stilt-Man, hashtag. Hashtag Idris for Stilt-Man on Twitter. We tried to get that campaign going. I assume it's going gangbusters right now. But if we get Rob Morgan as Stiltman, that'll be good too. That would be amazing. I don't think it's going to happen.
Starting point is 00:15:32 No. No. That'd make him smaller, wouldn't it? Yeah. Yeah. Maybe five seconds of just some guy getting beaten up in a Stiltman suit. Sure. Okay, take that.
Starting point is 00:15:42 Maybe try. Don't you want to see him like punt a guy like across the city? Absolutely, I do. Yeah. Yep. Yeah. We got some new Age of Ultron footage this week. We did, yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:50 I don't think there's going to be any more trailers except for some TV spots. I hope not. Yeah. Because. I've had enough. Yeah, there's been a lot. And it's out in the start of May?
Starting point is 00:15:59 When is it out? It's the start of April. Yeah. But for us it's, no, sorry, it's April 23 for us. Okay. It's like May 1st in the States. Weekly Planet exclusive. I'm seeing it, I think, on the Wednesday night,
Starting point is 00:16:16 so whatever that date that is. Okay, great. Yeah, that week. But anyway, New Age of Ultron footage. Yeah, so that's what we're saying. I hope there isn't any more because we have seen enough and we've seen a lot of, we've seen Hulkbusters, we've seen Ultrons.
Starting point is 00:16:31 Yes, we've seen Ultrons. We haven't seen the Vision yet. Please don't, Marvel, if you're listening, please don't give us any more Vision footage. We've seen, look, I think at this point they're deliberately, they're not going to show us any more. I think they're saving it for the bit at the end where the Vision's going to come in and just wipe the floor with
Starting point is 00:16:46 ultra right exactly i think that's what's going to happen oh yeah i really hope yeah that i completely agree but these tv spots we saw the hulk buster suit flying in in parts yep which is cool you see it for a second uh-huh i was i was thinking it was going to be like a van that rolls up me too i really thought that was my like we've mentioned this on the show before i i was fascinated to know how it shows up like that was is it yeah is it dropped off in a big like big sarcophagus thing maybe yeah it causes a lot of property damage it like lands on somebody's business my business hey what are you doing avengers those greens have no business thank you thank you but yeah like an ice cream truck.
Starting point is 00:17:26 Yeah, exactly. Yeah, like, you know, they do it in Transformers. Yeah. Where those two racist robots are an ice cream truck. Oh, that's right. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But yeah. In the Ultimate Universe, in the Ultimate Comic Universe,
Starting point is 00:17:37 War Machine's armor turns into a sports car. I thought that would have been good. That doesn't even make any sense. I know! But that would be very Tony Stark. Is that like a hollow sports car? Do you know what I mean? Because it's way bigger than a human.
Starting point is 00:17:51 So it'd have to be really stretched thin to make the shape of a sports car. Yeah, I guess so. It's probably hollow, yeah. Yeah. I'm just saying. Yeah, no, that makes sense. I'm not a sports car enthusiast. No, that makes sense.
Starting point is 00:17:59 Yeah, okay. What else do we see? Oh, we see Captain America has like an electromagnetic thing. Yeah, which explains a lot explains how he keeps getting the getting the shield back they must make reference
Starting point is 00:18:09 to it though like why he's got it because he's never had it before has he no that's true unless we've just never seen it no we've never seen it
Starting point is 00:18:15 yeah and there's also we see what's his name Quicksilver's voice he's like hey I'm from a different place so you
Starting point is 00:18:23 he's Borat he is Borat yeah yes yeah he's like hey i'm from a different place so you he's borat he's born yeah yes yeah he's from it's a fictional country he's from yeah as well but yeah so that's that's interesting i'm not from here sorry i hit you out wrong he's nice we can say whatever we want because it's not it's a fictional country we do whatever we want it doesn's a fictional country. We can do whatever we want. It doesn't matter. Yeah. Yeah. Again, I think we'll just be getting clips from here on out.
Starting point is 00:18:50 Like they'll show like one minute scenes and stuff leading up to it. And that'll be that. I'm going to do my best to ignore them, I think. Yes. Okay. That's probably a good idea. I won't. Great.
Starting point is 00:19:00 I don't know. I feel like I have to. Good. I don't know. I feel like I have to. Good. Also, there was a roster revealed for who's going to be around in Civil War and who's on what side. I won't go through it because it's, you know, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:19:14 Interesting. We don't do that here. No, it's not that. I don't know. I feel like I've spoiled enough already. You can look that up. It's all there. Like the Star Wars spoiler, for example, you can't look that up
Starting point is 00:19:23 because it's an exclusive. Yeah. But that one you can if you want to. But also, Civil War actually starts filming on April 1st. Not a trick, basically. April 1st is the worst. Oh, it really is, isn't it? I cannot wait, though, to see. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:39 Maybe Google's upside down. Yeah. Cracks did a really good April Fool's video last year. Oh, yes. Where it was just like, we're sick of April Fool's. It was just basically the guy making fun of the annoying people. I cannot wait for ClickHoles. April Fool's, whatever they do is going to be good, I reckon.
Starting point is 00:19:55 I think we've had this discussion before, but also on YouTube last year, I think it was like, we've archived all the YouTube footage now, and now we're going to shut it down because we've got all the footage we need. Right. It's like, what are you... Anyway. Nobody...
Starting point is 00:20:09 It doesn't matter. Anyway, there's a synopsis for Civil War. Do you want to hear it? Yes. Spoiler alert, Mason. Not really. Following the events of Age of Ultron, the collective governments of the world pass an act
Starting point is 00:20:19 designed to regulate all superhuman activity. So those 10 guys who have superpowers. There's heaps by then. Yeah, I guess. Think about it. And there's the Inhumans. And there's the Inhuman. This polarizes opinion among the Avengers,
Starting point is 00:20:33 causing two factions to side with Iron Man. You'll never get me. I have diplomatic immunity. Settle down, Quicksilver. Come on, mate. Go back to wherever you're from. Yeah. He's not here for sure. Staddle down quick, Silver. Come on, mate. Go back to wherever you're from. Yeah. With Iron Man.
Starting point is 00:20:46 He's not here for sure. They side with either Iron Man or Captain America, which causes an epic battle between former allies. I think I'm more excited for this than I am Age of Ultron. Maybe because it's a year away or whatever. I don't know. I'm really excited for that. I'm excited for Age of Ultron.
Starting point is 00:21:02 Live in the now. That's what I say. No. All right. Agree to disagree. So to disagree so yeah great synopsis it's out filming underway if they've got a comic con we probably would have said something but they're not so no yeah so but you know things will things will come up yeah yeah it's weird that like age of ultron it's like finished filming so long ago it must be weird though. So, so long. Can you imagine though, like for us, like we, it's not the same, but say we did four episodes of this show and then a year later we had to go
Starting point is 00:21:30 on like a tour and then talk about that. I'll be like, I don't even remember. How do they do these things with these press jackets? Oh, they get paid millions of dollars. Oh, that's right. I remember now. I guess you would remember, wouldn't you? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:21:43 It'd be poor form if you didn't remember. I love the actors, though, who don't care. They're just like, I don't know. I didn't even see it. Whatever. Yeah. Paul Bettany's like that. I was just about to say Paul Bettany, yeah.
Starting point is 00:21:54 He doesn't give a shit. But yeah, good for him. But look, was he live in any of this? Like, did he film any of it in person? Yeah, yeah. Okay, he did. He did all the Iron man stuff in like half an hour yeah yeah like some like on a like by a phone call or whatever and often he doesn't know
Starting point is 00:22:11 that he's in it like i remember one interview they're like hey well he's shaping up how's things shaping up with the avengers or it might have been iron man 3 and he's like i don't know sure i said it was like a month out is i haven't spoken to anybody right like shit that's fair i mean he's got a good voice for it and yeah ping pong ball suit i think it's a mixture we haven't spoken to anybody. Right. That's fair. He's got a good voice for it. Yeah. Ping pong ball suit? I think it's a mixture. We haven't seen it, though.

Starting point is 00:23:25 Right. But he does play a pivotal role. Yeah, he's very prominent. He has a symbolic role in it. Yeah, and a literal role. A literal role. Yeah. Yeah. So I thought maybe this week we could talk about best Spider-Man stories.
Starting point is 00:23:38 Oh, yes. Very good. I hope so because I've collected some that some people have sent in. Oh, sure. About 10 minutes before you got here. Fantastic. So, yeah. Do you want to talk about Civil War to start with?
Starting point is 00:23:48 Yeah, okay. Have you read Civil War? Yes. Have you experienced- A Civil War in my lifetime? No, I haven't. I was going to say, any kind of Civil War reenactment? No, although there is a live action role playing society that do stuff on Saturday nights in
Starting point is 00:24:04 a park near my house. that true yes what do they do what kind of stuff just run at each other and swing swords what era i don't know i haven't really gotten close enough i think i should at some how about we do it i'd imagine that because you're not dressed properly they'll be like get out of here who who is this wizard? Who are you with your colourful raiment? Be gone from here. And I'd be like, shut up, idiot. A digital, what you say? Yeah, okay.
Starting point is 00:24:34 Well, we should check that out some more. Absolutely. I don't think it's like, you know, they're fighting some sort of mythical beings or whatever. I think they just run at each other with swords and just swat at each other until they're dead. Foam swords? Again, haven't looked close enough. Might be real swords. Oh, yeah. at each other with swords. Cool. And just swat at each other until they were dead. Foam swords? Again, haven't looked close enough.
Starting point is 00:24:47 Might be real swords. Oh, yeah. You better not then. Yeah. No, seriously. Is that every Saturday? I think so, yeah. We're going to do it.
Starting point is 00:24:53 We're going to watch. We're going to go. Okay, great. Yeah, yeah. It'd be yelled at. Okay, great. Yeah. Anyway, Civil War, as a story goes, it's a pretty good one, isn't it?
Starting point is 00:25:02 Yes. Some people don't like it, though. Some people are like, oh, I want to see Civil War the some people like i don't want to see civil war the movie why wouldn't you want to see civil war the movie even if you don't like that story like the idea of two like warring factions yeah yeah being in a civil war pretty great yeah but i mean spider-man's role in it is that he has to choose between... In the comic book version, it's... For those who haven't read it, it's a young team of superheroes who is... It's the bloody...
Starting point is 00:25:34 It's the new warriors. Yeah. Who aren't... Like, they've been around for decades. Yeah, yeah. But in this scenario, it's got... They've sort of been rebooted as this team of young heroes and they are being followed around by reality television crew
Starting point is 00:25:47 to document their events. And essentially the Illuminati who are like some of the influential superheroes in the Marvel Universe, they get wind that there is going to be a – the government is going to put through this legislation to make all superheroes be registered and be members of S.H.I.E.L.D. And they're like, Iron Man, who's one member of the Illuminati, is like, well, we should go along with this
Starting point is 00:26:10 because before too long, something bad's going to happen and the government's going to force it on us. And then so the new warriors go to fight a bad guy who was Nitro, whose powers he can explode and then bring himself back together again. And they go to fight him
Starting point is 00:26:24 and he explodes near a school. Yeah. I think it's a school and he kills like a busload of children. Yeah, because tons of people. Yeah. And anyway, and so- And then that's after they knew that they were outclassed and they shouldn't be there.
Starting point is 00:26:35 Right, exactly. They were doing it for ratings and whatever. Yeah, totally. And then the government are like, well, we're putting this through whether you like it or not. Yeah. And Iron Man is in favor of it. And they should believe that Captain America would be on board. Yes. Because he Man is in favour of it. And they,
Starting point is 00:26:47 S.H.I.E.L.D. believe that Captain America would be on board. Yes. Because he's a patriot and because he's a high ranking member of S.H.I.E.L.D. Yeah. And he wears that nice outfit. Oh yeah. So. So good. They assume that he's on board.
Starting point is 00:26:55 They're wrong. Yeah. Yeah. He very much isn't. And yeah, and he's, because he believes in freedom and. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:26:59 And et cetera. And punching whoever you bloody want. Whoever you want. Punch a Nazi. Punch a green. Punch a guy from a weird country. You don't know where his accent's from. No, Captain, stop it.
Starting point is 00:27:11 Ah, my face. Anyway, so Spider-Man is sort of, he's given the pivot, because he's very much an iconic character. Yeah, and he's never revealed himself. Yes, exactly. And so in this storyline, yeah, he has to decide who's going to go with Captain America or Iron Man. And in the end, he chooses to unmask on television.
Starting point is 00:27:31 And yeah, people are like, what? He's Spider-Man. He's Spider-Man. And he also is given by Iron Man like a weird Iron Man, Spider-Man hybrid costume. He's got extra arms. He's got three extra arms. Yeah, which is weird.
Starting point is 00:27:44 Which is weird. Yeah, he doesn't have four have four yeah that's corrected many years that's corrected later okay not not by him but by dr octopus good you will talk about it later yeah i assume yeah but it's a weird red and gold it's a weird red and gold suit yeah but it can like it can it works in that he doesn't wear it for that long no and it also has the ability to camouflage itself as like other stuff so for a lot of time he just camouflages himself as his regular spider-man costume so it looks way better yeah yeah and look it's he does he changes his mind at one point because he realizes that or he believes that what they're doing is then wrong because one of the goliath i believe is killed yep robot thor who's not real thor yes shoots him through the chest and a lot of superhero switch
Starting point is 00:28:27 sides from that like sue storm and and a couple others and from that spider-man changed his mind and he goes to tony stark and he's like i can't remember exactly how it happens but he's like i'm out yep but of course tony stark being the paranoid lunatic that he is has installed a fail safe in that suit yes so it So it just turns on him. And he gets- Ah, three arms. Stop it. And he basically barely escapes with his life
Starting point is 00:28:53 and the Punisher picks him up and whatever. And that leads into a storyline. One more day? One more day where Spider-Man wants to- Wait, he needs to... It's not so much... It's a side effect. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:29:09 Spider-Man needs to save the life of Aunt May. Yeah. Who got shot because of his identity being revealed. Right, yeah, yeah. And so he's like... And so science can't save her. No. Which is weird because he knows a lot of scientists.
Starting point is 00:29:21 I can think of four that he would know. Yeah. Yeah. Some of them aren't as good as others. And Bruce Banner's like, okay, I can save a life by turning him into a giant green rage monster. And he's like, ooh, ooh, ooh.
Starting point is 00:29:35 But yeah, he does. He goes to Tony Stark and Tony Stark's like, Cardell, you shouldn't even be here. But then he does. He sends Jarvis and Jarvis pretends that he's like, you're a cousin or something.
Starting point is 00:29:43 Right, right. But again, though, it's at that point where she cannot be saved she could be given the best care but she's going to die so he goes to Peter Parker goes to Mephisto yeah the devil one of one of the the devil ish yeah uh who agrees to save her life on the condition that basically that all Peter Parker's happiness yes he's gone. And him and Mary Jane Parker decide that the deal basically is she will live, but they never got married. Is that right?
Starting point is 00:30:11 No, they dated briefly and it didn't work out. And then they went their separate ways. So everything else, so the universe resets where May is alive, but Peter Parker is single again. And they know each other because they see each other at a party at the end. And they give each other like a weird face. Yeah. So the idea is they dated for a while and it
Starting point is 00:30:27 it didn't really kick off so they're like oh well yeah it all works out though in the end boy does it don't they get back together they're together now are they i can't remember i'm fairly certain they are huh i might be wrong look here's the the thing about it's weird and we'll probably get to that. We might as well talk about it now. What did you think of the One More Day storyline? It was fine. Yeah, it's fine, exactly. I don't like...
Starting point is 00:30:49 It's got some really nice moments, some touching moments. Like the stuff with Peter and MJ is quite good, where they're together. But it purely exists to make it so that he's not public anymore with his identity. That's why it exists. But I think it exists as well because they wanted him to be single again. Yeah, sure again yeah sure because we might as well talk about it now
Starting point is 00:31:09 the one of the most memorable because it's so incredibly bad yeah is spider-man storylines is the clone saga sure and there's there is so much backstory to the clone saga there's a whole website and it's incredibly long and i've never gotten through it if i find a link i'll put it up on twitter or whatever sure but like there's so much backstory behind it and it's incredibly long, and I've never gotten through it. If I find a link, I'll put it up on Twitter or whatever. Sure. But there's so much backstory behind it. And the Clone Saga was intended to be a few months long, but it became...
Starting point is 00:31:35 It was initially quite popular, wasn't it? Yeah, it was incredibly popular. And this was in the day... Nowadays, every comic book storyline has a definitive ending. They're like issue one of eight or six or whatever or ten because then you can sell it as a trade paperback. Exactly. Almost immediately afterwards, like the next month or whatever.
Starting point is 00:31:52 Yeah. But this was back in the day when if a storyline was good, you just kept it going forever. And that's not good, popular. It's like the heroes of comics. Yes, exactly. And so this storyline became incredibly popular the clone saga and so it just went forever yeah and it stopped making sense but it just kept going and it just it's like the last of comic books yes and this was in the time where there was
Starting point is 00:32:16 there was four spider-man comic books a month yeah and it contained like it was every like all it encompassed every every comic spider-man comic book that and so it went like for like three years or something like that like it was an extraordinary amount of time and essentially in this in this there was a storyline in the 80s where uh spider-man villain the jackal yeah clone spider-man this was like a one issue thing sure let's put clone spider-man it's like now you have to battle you have to battle yourself well it's the ultimate battle or whatever and spider-man's lair is like am i the real guy or is that the real guy it must be the real guy obviously whatever
Starting point is 00:32:52 yeah and then he battles this guy and then in you know classic comic book uh finality when he beats this spider-man he's like like the building collapses on him and he's like well he's dead that's you know no consequences i guess whatever and like the building collapses on him. And he's like, well, he's dead. That's, you know, no consequences, I guess, whatever. And then he wraps him up in Spider-Man, in like his webbing. And then he puts him down a smokestack. I think to incinerate the body. Maybe. And then he leaves and he's like, well, what a crazy adventure I had.
Starting point is 00:33:17 Hope I can make rent this month or whatever. Like it's just another crazy day in my life. Like, it's just another crazy day in my life. And so in the 90s, Marvel were like, we need, like, Spider-Man's losing traction with young people. Yeah. And we think it's because he's doing all right in his life. Yeah, because he's, like, 35 and he's married. He's 35 and he has, like, a good job.
Starting point is 00:33:41 We've talked about this before. He's 35. He has a good job at, like, a university. He's married to a supermodel, et cetera, et cetera. Maybe the kids can't relate to him anymore. He covered up that murder of that clone. Sure, boy, did he. Just walked away.
Starting point is 00:33:53 And he got away scot-free and we don't like that. So what we want to do is we want to, we can't get rid of, like he's still popular and he's one of our iconic characters. So we need to make him hip to the young people again yeah and their first idea give him a gun yeah we give him or a hyper color t-shirt they're not they're not they're out of touch um skateboard we saw that in the movie yeah we did um so they were like okay well we could have him get divorced because then he'd be cool and single again and he'd be chasing girls or whatever but then you're like but then he'd just be a sad old man like exactly old kind of old kind of old yeah yeah old for a teenager oh yeah totally and that would just be then he's just a sad man who's had a
Starting point is 00:34:43 divorce and he's had to you know did he have a divorce. And he's had to, you know. Did he have a kid at that point? No. Okay. So what they were like, okay, what we can do. I guess they went through the archives and they're like, find a thing to fix here. And so they're like, okay, well, there's the clone saga. We've got a Spider-Man who isn't married.
Starting point is 00:35:01 And he, you know, he doesn't have a good job or whatever. Yeah. I mean, he was incinerated, sure. He was thrown down a smokestack like a pile of garbage. But what we can do is we can say, oh, he didn't die. You know, his spider powers saved him or whatever. Yeah. And then he escaped this situation.
Starting point is 00:35:22 He went back to Peter Parker's house thinking he was the real Spider-Man. He saw that Peter Parker was there and he was like, oh, I must be the clone. I can't go and ruin Peter Parker's life or take it over or whatever. I'll go to the West Coast and I'll make my own life. And so he took the name Ben Reilly, which is Uncle Ben. And became a seaboat captain. Oh, the tales he could tell.
Starting point is 00:35:46 Oh, the lonely nights. But, and so, and then he took the identity of the Scarlet Spider. Yeah. So talking skateboards, he was essentially Spider-Man, but with like a sleeveless hoodie. I don't actually mind that costume. I don't mind it either. And further on, I don't mind what happens a little bit later. So basically what they were like, the Marvel editorial were like okay what we're gonna do is we're gonna bring in the scarlet spider cool
Starting point is 00:36:08 swinging new guy yeah single guy yeah chasing the girls or whatever i don't know what they were thinking skateboarding after skateboarding yeah skateboarding up walls and they were like okay what we'll do is we'll get we'll have him revealed oh there's this new scarlet spider we will have original peter park Parker lose his powers, we'll have Mary Jane get pregnant, and then they will go off to the suburbs or whatever and they will have- To be seaboat captains.
Starting point is 00:36:34 Yeah, to be seaboat captains. That's the dream, obviously. To kind of fade off into the background and be like, here's a happy ending. They'll have kids and whatever, and then they would reintroduce this guy as the new Spider-Man and then kids would love it. But then I guess, again, it was incredibly popular.
Starting point is 00:36:53 Yeah. So basically, and so what happens is Peter Parker does lose his powers. Mary Jane is pregnant. They sort of, there's a reveal where it turns out that peter parker is actually the clone yeah so it turns out that ben reilly was the original so then you can be like well he's here the original spider-man's back kind of thing yeah and then the scarlet spider encounters like a like a living computer program hologram monster creature called the scarlet spider and he's like well what can i do i can't be the scarlet
Starting point is 00:37:25 spider anymore and so he becomes spider-man okay and he gets the new the new 90s costume which i really like okay i think it's a really good costume it was later taken by spider girl in the future marvel universe yeah but i think it's a really good costume okay but anyway so this storyline got really popular yeah and so like let's just continue it forever um and boy it just like there were so many there were so many switcheroos suddenly peter parker is the clone he's not the clone and it turns out at the end he ben reilly was a clone yes because it turned out that the whole thing was just norman osborn the green goblin just messing with everybody just having a bit of a laugh well it turned out like the Jackal made a whole bunch of clones of Spider-Man.
Starting point is 00:38:07 There was a side storyline called Maximum Clonage where there was just tons of clones, just heaps of them. And then Spider-Man got his powers back. So at the end, Ben Reilly was impaled on the Green Goblin's Goblin Glider and he dissolved because that's what happens to clones. So it was like, oh, he was the clone after all. Problem solved. Peter Parker walks away.
Starting point is 00:38:34 In this retelling of the story, it actually does sound interesting. Yeah, but you've got to think it was drawn over three years. Yeah, exactly. And it was back and forth and seemingly never ending. Right, right. Nonsensical. But yeah, that's the best retelling of that story I've ever heard. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:38:48 Except for that website, which I'm never going to visit. And probably the other time where I probably retell the better. Sure. The Scarlet Spider is back, actually. Not him. Yeah. But there was another clone of Peter Parker called Kane. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:38:59 Who was like a giant monster man who had like super intense versions of Spider-man's powers yeah so like in like he had he had the spider sense but as well as uh sort of sensing danger he could sort of see the future okay a lot of ways so and he could like instead of as well as being able to cling to walls like spider-man he could like burn into people's flesh with the with the so he had the mark of kane oh okay but he could be could might anyway uh he's back with the... So he had the Mark of Cain. Oh, okay. But he could... Anyway, he's back as the Scarlet Spider. Okay, cool.
Starting point is 00:39:28 Is this comic still going? Who knows? Well, they did the recent run of the Spider-Man... Spider-Verse, yeah. Spider-Verse, yeah. Which I haven't actually read, so I can't talk about it. Have you read it?
Starting point is 00:39:37 It's pretty good. All right. Yeah. Let's talk about it. It's pretty good. Yeah. Okay, cool. It is notable in the fact that they brought...
Starting point is 00:39:47 It's essentially these weird vampire creatures, like these unstoppable vampire creatures who have a taste for Spider-Man blood and flesh, and they're like, well, we're going to... And they're like interdimensional vampires. They're like, we're going to kill all the Spider-Men from all the dimensions and eat them all. Okay, sure.
Starting point is 00:40:03 Anyway, it's pretty good. And you get to see characters that maybe got only one-shot appearances like the Spider-Man noir character. Yeah, it's said to contain every version. Spider-Ham is back, which is good. But it is also notable because it brought back, it created a version of Gwen Stacy.
Starting point is 00:40:20 Yeah, Spider-Gwen. Spider-Gwen, who has a sweet new costume and has a new series do you want to talk about the death of gwen stacy is that a story i should talk about absolutely well it's it's the most iconic spider-man story probably i would say so yeah people say that that character wasn't that interesting until she died and i can't like it's it's hard looking back because i obviously wasn't around then yeah and i And I did grow up reading that character not knowing that she was going to die. Right, right.
Starting point is 00:40:50 But she just seems like a carbon copy of Mary Jane Watson. They seem like the same initially. Here's the thing about I think when people say that, you know, this character only got interesting after a certain period. Yeah. I think that comic books now, like comic books back in the day had amazing like creativity and great art and all sorts of stuff and great innovations or whatever.
Starting point is 00:41:12 But I think characterization is a lot better now. I think stories are a lot better now. Without a doubt. Yeah. And I think you're right. Like this was probably, it was probably not, it wasn't a,
Starting point is 00:41:22 it wasn't a turn that a lot of comic books took back in the day. And I think that's probably why it's so iconic. Yeah, yeah. Like it's, if you've seen Amazing Spider-Man 2, there's a version of that. Yeah. But essentially, there's two parts to the whole sort of saga. One is that Spider-Man, his identity is revealed to the Green Goblin, and Green Goblin reveals that his identity is Norman Osborn,
Starting point is 00:41:50 who is the father of Harry Osborn, who... Boy, this goes for a while. We've all seen Spider-Man. We've all seen Spider-Man. We've seen so many. Anyway, so Spider-Man goes to Empire State University. He meets Gwen Stacy. She becomes his girlfriend.
Starting point is 00:42:06 Yeah. And he also meets Harry Osborn. Yeah. And then his father returns out to Norman Osborn, which people are like, whoa, amazing. Apparently in, at the time, there was arguments between Stan Lee and other editors. Yeah. And they were like, shouldn't we just make it a random guy? Definitely not.
Starting point is 00:42:21 Right. Okay. Yeah. What do you think? No. I think it's way more interesting. Yeah. It'd be a weird reveal if it's like, I'm this guy.
Starting point is 00:42:26 I mean, I think there is too many Spider-Man villains where Spider-Man just happens to know them. Yeah, that's true. There probably is. But no, I think that makes it way more interesting. Yeah, exactly. Yeah. I mean, it makes it more difficult when he keeps dying and coming back
Starting point is 00:42:39 and Peter's in this guy's life. And he's like, does he even – because sometimes he's got amnesia. Yeah, uh-huh. And it's weird relationship with Harry and and whatever but no i think initially that was definitely a good move because otherwise it was just some guy who cares exactly yeah but yeah that that's a story it's also it's argued like is she killed from the fall or is she killed from spider-man like snapping her spine when he catches her with the web. Right, exactly, yeah. What do you think? There's a lot of debate
Starting point is 00:43:06 on the internet about that. In the movie, it looks like he breaks her spine and she cracks her head. Yeah, no, she definitely cracks... I don't think... I think in the movie,
Starting point is 00:43:17 he gets her with the webs and then she is like... She stops like inches from the floor, but then she hits her head, I think. Yeah. And there's been a lot of variations of that over the years, where he's had to save people.
Starting point is 00:43:35 It's the who shot first. Yeah, it is. Yeah. But there's been a lot of variations over the years, where a villain's thrown somebody off a building or whatever, and he has to save them in similar circumstances but he's learned like weapon from literally every point in their body right yeah oh yeah you're absolutely i thought you were saying there's different variations of that scene oh yeah totally yeah there there also is i don't know there's there's definitely a scientific consensus of whether he killed her or not well
Starting point is 00:44:01 look regardless yeah he didn't he wasn't the one who pitched her off the building no that's true yeah yeah there's a little there's a little they they replicate that scene as well in spider-man the first spider-man movie as well yeah but he throws mary jane parker yes that's true mary jane watson's at that point yeah what are you gonna say no i'm just googling i'm just googling. I'm just Googling who killed Gwen Stacy ultimately. Do you think she should have been saved in the movie? No. It doesn't matter. No, it doesn't because we'll never have another one.
Starting point is 00:44:33 No, I don't think. I think that scene looks good. I'm not sure if it's probably one of the better sequences in that movie. And it only sort of works as the better sequences in that movie uh-huh and it only sort of works as well because you believe that their relationship because they seem like right right because they've got they've got good chemistry but yeah i don't know what you reckon they shouldn't have killed her i would have liked to see her live honestly just because you can you can make it you can make a turn in the movies you're like well it's not the same universe so
Starting point is 00:45:00 yeah yeah so shut up yeah any definitive evidence hmm a note on the letters page says it saddens us to say that the whiplash effect she underwent blah blah blah stopped it when Spidey's webbing stopped her so suddenly was in fact what killed her
Starting point is 00:45:13 okay and you can't you gotta believe a letters page I think oh well he's way better at being Spider-Man now he never lets anybody die yeah totally
Starting point is 00:45:22 except for that clod of paper the original comic features a snap sound effect next to a head in the panel in which the webbing catches her. However, some later reprints remove the effect. Ah. That's weird. In the History Channel special Spider-Man Tech,
Starting point is 00:45:34 Stan Lee states that her neck was indeed snapped. Oh boy. I want to see that clip, if nothing else. He'd be so excited by it. Yep. Physicist James Kakalios says the whiplash effect would have killed her. Sudden stop
Starting point is 00:45:47 during a high-speed fall. I think all that matters is... For some time, fans speculated that shock of the fall itself caused her death, but that doesn't happen. That's not a real thing.
Starting point is 00:45:55 No, it's not a real thing. It's Stan Lee. Look, whether or not it's medically correct how she died, if Stan Lee says, no, the intention was that he killed her,
Starting point is 00:46:02 then that's exactly what it is. But if we're talking Gwen Stacy stories, there's a story called Spider-Man Blue from a few years ago. I remember that. Yeah, that one's great. Jeff Loeb and Tim Sale who did Long Halloween, which is also one of my faves.
Starting point is 00:46:18 It's sort of set in the 1960s era Spider-Man. It's like that kind of art. And you know that because Harry Osborn has that super dumb hair. Yeah, he does. You know, like the horizontal cornrows. Yeah, so weird. And the weird widow's peak. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:46:30 I don't understand what that was ever intended to be. Because Norman and Harry both have it. They have the same haircut. But nobody else in the universe, from what I can tell, has that haircut. Yeah. It's weird. Yeah. And it's red and black.
Starting point is 00:46:43 I don't. Sometimes it's brown and yellow. I don't. Sometimes it's brown and yellow. I don't know. But basically. I could discuss this all day. I'll be honest with you. I want to talk about another story later that that comes up. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:46:54 Actually. But it's basically, it's set in kind of that. It's not really set in any kind of specific era. It's a standalone. But it's got the Tim Sale kind of like kind of groovy 60s kind of pop art kind of look to it it definitely looks more like the kind of 60s spider-man than yeah than the newer stuff and it just it's got a lot of like villains coming in and out like he it turns out at the end spoiler alert i guess the main villain is craven right and he's just been firing villains at spider-man
Starting point is 00:47:21 yes throughout the story and he's just been knocking them back so Kraven can see, you know, so he can beat him at the end and learn all his skills and whatever. Right, sure, yeah. And it's a very short fight, but it's not, he just gets hurt, Kraven. But it's not really about that. It's about the relationship
Starting point is 00:47:36 between Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy. And it just chronicles that time leading up and it's just him journaling what their relationship and looking back on it because he's sort of dictating a a note to her like an audio yeah exactly because at that point he's married to mary jane watson and and whatever and they're all in the same friendship group but it's got a lot of kind of language like flash thompson's like hey peter parker you're square and all that there's a there's a lot of that but i don't know it's a it's a lot
Starting point is 00:48:03 of fun and it's uh it's a nice little throwback, but it's also a nice little self-contained story. It's not like action-packed or anything. No, it is, but it's more kind of romantic and nostalgic than it is like a gun-ho, look at all this action kind of story. There's another one. It came out a few years ago and it's sort of that, but in the opposite direction.
Starting point is 00:48:24 Yeah. I can't remember the name of it, but it's like a – somebody will remember. It's this weird like 60s summer camp kind of like sexy, weird storyline. But it's like Aunt May and Uncle Ben as like young, hot teens. And like, yeah, it's super weird that sounds like that art may spinoff movie that we're gonna do right exactly yeah did you hear about that no that was Sony was planning on an art may spinoff movie love it like it was rumored and they were like we would never and then it came out that Sony leaf we definitely were going to yeah anyway sorry go on
Starting point is 00:49:01 but anyway and it's it and it's just this weird... Oh, yeah, here we go. Reportedly considering Spider-Man's been off. But yeah, it sort of subtly implies that Aunt May and Uncle Ben might be Peter Parker's actual parents. Okay. Yeah, I think it's out of continuity. Sure.
Starting point is 00:49:21 It's super weird and I can't remember the name of it. We'll get back to it if I remember. It sounds like something you just feel like weird when you're reading it. Right, right, Sure. It's super weird and I can't remember the name of it. We'll get back to it if I remember. It sounds like something you just feel like weird when you're reading it. Right, right, right. Yeah, exactly. Makes you uncomfortable.
Starting point is 00:49:30 Yeah, it did. Spider-Man Blue though, I think that's one of my favourite ones. It's really great. And I only read it recently but it's good. I like the team behind it as well, I guess.
Starting point is 00:49:39 There's also Vulture and New Vulture and they fight to be Vulture. Oh, yes. Yeah, and there's great moments like in it where Peter Parker sees the two vultures fighting
Starting point is 00:49:46 after one of the vultures has severely hurt him the newer one right right and he's like I should just let them fight who cares yeah yeah
Starting point is 00:49:53 let them kill and then he's like ah but no because then when my uncle I did that and then he died and he's like sick
Starting point is 00:49:58 and he's like fine so he like suits up and then he goes out and he just beats him by crashing one into the other it's pretty good.
Starting point is 00:50:05 It's called Trouble. Trouble. Is the storyline. They're called Spider-Man Trouble. No, it's just called Trouble. Yeah. Like the board game Trouble. And again, it's about teen pregnancy.
Starting point is 00:50:16 So who are the other people then who were supposed to be Peter Parker's parents with all the photos of them? That's a good question. Well, see, yeah. So the main characters are May, Mary, Ben, Richard okay so so mary parker richard parker right see but it's they know i don't think the last names are ever mentioned okay so i think it's yeah anyway is it marvel it is it is marvel yeah so it's not like a like another company have done it and not use them right names or anything yeah okay fair enough anyway uh read that if you want to be weirded out. That's what I'm saying. Have you read
Starting point is 00:50:46 Superior Spider-Man? Yes. It's really good, isn't it? Good series, yeah. People were very sceptical of that initially when it
Starting point is 00:50:53 started, but that's one of the best ones as well, isn't it? I think so, yeah. And Peter Parker's barely in it. So what you're saying is Peter Parker's
Starting point is 00:51:00 the weak link. Yes. Great. Let's get rid of him. But I mean, it's relatively new. I don't know how much you really want to go on about it, but it's basically... We've mentioned it before, I link. Yes. Great. Let's get rid of him. But I mean, it's relatively new. I don't know how much you really want to go on about it,
Starting point is 00:51:07 but it's basically... We've mentioned it before, I think. Doc Ock takes over Peter Parker's body in a last-ditch effort to save himself. He transfers his consciousness. Chappy style. Chappy style. And then from there,
Starting point is 00:51:19 he decides to basically do the right thing and become the superior Spider-Man. And he uses his tech and his resources and his supposedly superior intellect to become the best version of Spider-Man that he could possibly be. Including a new Spider-Man costume with four mechanical arms. Get it right, Tony Stark. Come on. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:51:41 And so he kind of turns the city into sort of this police state sort of? A little bit, yeah. It's not super over the top. Right, yeah. But yeah, he's definitely, initially at least, he's smarter and more calculated about how he goes about things. Sure, yeah. But that all kind of comes undone at the end
Starting point is 00:51:57 and he basically concedes that he's not the superior spy. Correct. How ironic. Ironic title. But yeah, I mean, it's good. People should read that. It's long, but it's not too long. What is it, like 20, 30 issues maybe?
Starting point is 00:52:13 Something like that, yeah. It's no clone saga. No, it certainly isn't. But yeah, it's a good one. It's good for what ails you. Correct. You know what's one of my favourite ones? Okay.
Starting point is 00:52:22 And you lent me this. It's not actually a Spider-Man issue. It's Deadpool issue 11. Oh, yes, where Deadpool goes back in time for some reason that I can't remember. It's by accident. Sure. And he goes back in time to meet,
Starting point is 00:52:36 and he meets young Peter Parker. No, well, he doesn't meet him at all. He just happens to crash land at Peter Parker's house and land on top of Aunt May. And from there, he uses hologram technology to look like Peter Parker. That's right. And then it's just him going...
Starting point is 00:52:54 Actually, it's a real 1960s story and it's Deadpool looking like Peter Parker interacting with all the 1960s characters. Sure, yeah. And he's just so confused. Right. As to the language just so confused. Right. As to like the language everybody's using. Right.
Starting point is 00:53:07 Because from Deadpool's perspective, he's gone back to like the 80s. Yeah. So he wouldn't understand why it's the 60s all of a sudden. Yeah. It's sort of a parody of this weird sliding time scale that comic book universes have. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:53:24 You know, when Peter Parker was a teen, it was like 1962 or whatever. Yeah. weird sliding time scale that yeah that comic book universes have exactly you know when peter parker was a teen it was like 1962 or whatever yeah so that's and he's wearing his sweater vests and his big round glasses and he's like baffled by like by the incredibly hot women that are there yeah and what is it there's a and there's a point where well it's multiple points where he's just keeps asking harry osborn about his hair. Sure, yeah. He's like, what is going on? Explain it. Right.
Starting point is 00:53:48 And they're just like, oh, Peter, you're square or whatever. And they're just ignoring him. And then at the end, Kraven the Hunter shows up and it's obviously the 1960s version. He's after Norman Osborn for whatever reason or something or Harry Osborn, I can't remember. And Deadpool fights Kraven and just like trounces it
Starting point is 00:54:07 because he's the 1960s kind of goofy Kraven and he shoots lasers like out of his nipples. Sure, yeah. Which is what happens in the original story. And look, there's a lot of stuff in that that flashes to the present day, which, because the story's from like 1997, there's no context for it
Starting point is 00:54:24 because I've only read that issue. So I'm like, I don't understand this. So there's like Flatman and a whole bunch of other characters. Oh, sure. From the Great Lakes Avengers. Exactly. Yeah. And so that stuff is not as good.
Starting point is 00:54:35 But the 1960s stuff is pretty incredible. Yeah. And again, it's not a Spider-Man story. He's barely in it. Because Deadpool as well tricks Peter Parker at one point. He tells him that there's something going on at the docks or whatever and you better get down there because it's going to be you know danger and criminals and so Spider-Man spends most of the issues like swinging around there going there's nothing here I don't know I don't understand yeah well worth
Starting point is 00:54:57 the read Mason yes it's pretty good but yeah expect not a lot of it to make sense no exactly yeah yeah got any others? Off the top of my head? Sure. No. Okay. Give me another one. The Miles Morales Spider-Man.
Starting point is 00:55:10 Great. First appearances in The Ultimate Spider-Man, which is a good run. Yeah. But in that story, Peter Parker gets killed by the Green Goblin. And Miles Morales at that point, I think he already has the Spider-Man powers but he's afraid to use them yes and after Peter Parker dies he decides well there needs to be a Spider-Man and I should have been a hero like Spider-Man and whatever so he suits up as with great power comes great responsibility that is maybe but so he remains to be seen I think his first appearance as Spider-Man, he fights the kangaroo. Yes. And as he's fighting him, the crowd is like, come on, man.
Starting point is 00:55:48 This is in bad taste. Like, why are you dressed as Spider-Man? Right. Because everybody publicly saw that Spider-Man was killed. And I think he's then taken in by, like, she'll get him. Like, you know, capture him and, you know, like you kind of, you need to stop doing this and whatever. And then I think Electro busts out and he's the one that stops him and, you know, like you kind of, you need to stop doing this and whatever.
Starting point is 00:56:08 And then I think Electro busts out and he's the one that stops him. Right, right, right. And so then they give him permission and they give him a new Spider-Man suit, which I really like that. That's what I'm saying. I like these alternate Spider-Man costumes. People, these designs, they're real good, man. Yeah, they should definitely use some of them in the movie. Yeah, absolutely.
Starting point is 00:56:23 Yeah, I really, I, I really like that character. And that's a good way to kind of return the status quo to the character of Peter Parker without it actually reverting. He's obviously not Peter Parker, but without changing the timeline or whatever. Yeah, but I think when they do merge all the Marvel universes, I think we're going to have both. Because Peter Parker, though he does come back at some point.
Starting point is 00:56:45 I can't remember where I'm up to. In Ultimate Spider-Man Volume 1, a version of Peter Parker comes back. And I haven't actually finished it, so it's not made clear whether that's the original Peter Parker or someone else. But I think he also meets regular Earth Peter Parker. Yes, he does, yeah.
Starting point is 00:57:05 And he gives him permission to be Spider-Man and whatever. But he's a very cool character, like you, Mason. I am a very cool character. Thank you. Finally. Actually, one that I thought of, because, you know, Venom is a fan favourite, for good or ill. Maximum Carnage.
Starting point is 00:57:24 No, not exactly the other way no bad none of that we can talk about Maximum Carnage at some point sure
Starting point is 00:57:30 I don't know but there was there was a storyline in the 80s called the death of Gene DeWolf yeah police captain
Starting point is 00:57:38 Gene DeWolf yeah is killed like three or four pages in to the storyline and it's sort of it becomes this
Starting point is 00:57:46 murder mystery storyline and this is spider-man wearing the black symbiote costume yeah but he doesn't know that it's kind of alien yet he doesn't know that it's affecting his mind yet kind of thing and he has to track down uh the killer who it turns out was a a former shield agent who was had his mind and his body sort of messed with, so now he's superhumanly strong and blah, blah, blah. And he's called the Sin Eater. Yeah. And he's a guy with a shotgun.
Starting point is 00:58:12 He's pretty strong and he's got a shotgun, essentially. So he's like the Punisher. Yes, kind of, yeah. But bad. Yeah. This was kind of a turning point. This is the first appearance of Eddie Brock, investigative journalist Eddie Brock, who believes the senator is a certain person.
Starting point is 00:58:28 And then when Spider-Man reveals that it was not him, it was in fact this ex-Shield agent, Eddie Brock is disgraced in the press. And so he starts to really hate Spider-Man. And then when Spider-Man discovers that the black suit he's wearing is sort of the alien symbiote. It's no good. And he gets it with the help of Reed Richards, finally.
Starting point is 00:58:47 He comes to some use, Richards. He extricates the symbiote from himself and then the symbiote grows to hate Spider-Man. And so through more or less a weird coincidence, Eddie Brock and the symbiote come together. Are there any coincidences though? Yeah. Yeah, there are.
Starting point is 00:59:04 There are a lot of weird coincidences. And anyway, that creates Venom. And so this is kind of... You know, Venom is more remembered than this particular storyline. Yeah. But it is quite... Like, it's...
Starting point is 00:59:15 It's a good introduction. Yeah, it's a good intro. It's very grim. Yeah. Because, again, it's not like... It's not like this character of Jane DeWolf like sacrifices herself at the end valiantly and blah, blah, blah. She's shot to death in her sleep.
Starting point is 00:59:28 It's kind of... And also, as a side part to the storyline, there's a sort of an evolution of the relationship between Spider-Man and Daredevil in it, which is also pretty good. Cool. Well, they're both superheroes, aren't they? They are both superheroes.
Starting point is 00:59:40 But at the end, it's grim, and Spider-Man goes to some dark places and again we sort of discover that the symbiote is affecting his mind so at the end
Starting point is 00:59:50 when he finally tracks down the Sin-Eater he's like he just decides he's just gonna you know beat him to death kind of thing
Starting point is 00:59:56 and Daredevil Daredevil is this counterpoint of like no no you know you're a superhero remember who you are the classic
Starting point is 01:00:03 remember who you are you know but it's sort of an evolution of the relationship i think it's pretty okay pretty cool yeah do you uh i like also they reveal their secret identities to each other at the same time one two three oh it's you i don't recognize you yeah who's this idiot yeah i've got one more there are obviously a lot more and I'm happy to do another episode on this, but I've got one more one that I actually only read recently as well. Yes.
Starting point is 01:00:28 Because it's one of the best, they say. Oh, yes. Kraven's Last Hunt. Yeah. It's pretty good. Yeah. Black Suit Spider-Man again. Black Suit Spider-Man, but I don't think it's...
Starting point is 01:00:38 Is it Symbiote Spider-Man? I don't know. But it's basically where... No, I don't think it is. I think it's... Might be after where he still wears the suit. He's still wearing the black version of the suit, but it's not the symbiote suit.
Starting point is 01:00:48 Because otherwise, because he does get killed and buried. Yeah, that's right. And you'd think the symbiote would get him out of that. Maybe that's how. I don't think it is. But yeah, so Kraven turns up and Spider-Man's having these weird dreams
Starting point is 01:00:59 where he's being engulfed by spiders and whatever. It's very dark and very gothic. And I have something to say about that, which explains why it is. And Kraven's basically preparing to come in and prove himself better than Spider-Man and the better hunter, the best hunter. The superior Spider-Man. If you will. And so he basically shoots Spider-Man in the face at point blank range with a shotgun and
Starting point is 01:01:22 buries him. It turns out later, he just drugged him. And so what he does while Spider-Man is having these weird hallucinating nightmares in a grave where he's buried. Kraven dresses as Spider-Man and just starts beating up criminals. Yeah. And for whatever reason, it's kind of like Kraven's like last hurrah. And then when Spider-Man does come out, they have a showdown and Kraven just at the end
Starting point is 01:01:45 he's just like well I still win because I proved that I could beat you and whatever and he just kind of walks away and then they kind of have an understanding where Kraven's like I'm not going to come back. I'm not going to try and murder you again. Yeah and Kraven then kills himself at the end.
Starting point is 01:02:01 No one dies in comics or whatever. Well his mystical herbs brought him back to life. Yeah. There's also a giant, like, rat man in it that's eating people, if you recall. Yes, vaguely. It's like the lizard, except it's a rat man. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:02:16 But no, it's cool. It's not very Spider-Man, though. It's more Batman. And I did think that reading it. And then I got this email from Jeff. I know where this is going to go fine do you want to jump in and steal Jeff's thunder
Starting point is 01:02:28 yeah I'm going to steal Jeff listen Jeff I know it was originally going to be a Batman story correct yeah yeah did you know it was originally intended
Starting point is 01:02:34 but yeah in the 80s DC rejected writer John Mark something correct pitched on the story where the Joker
Starting point is 01:02:41 seemingly kills Batman and ends up becoming sane as a result so there you go yeah that makes a lot of sense yeah but it's it's cool people say it's the best i wouldn't say it's the best no i'd like to see it as a movie though yeah not necessarily where spider-man's in a grave for two weeks just have craven show up and for you know and he's not there because you know spider-man forgot his birthday or because he happens to know him you know he's not there because Spider-Man forgot his birthday or because he happens to know him.
Starting point is 01:03:06 He sees Spider-Man and he's like, I want to fight that guy because that seems difficult. Sure. I like a challenge. I'm a man who likes a challenge. There's also a scene where Kraven goes into a pit of spiders and starts eating all the spiders. It could be a dream.
Starting point is 01:03:22 I don't know. There's a lot of that where it's like, is this a dream? I don't know what this is. But yeah, it's's pretty cool it is solid yeah i've got some listener ones here though okay i'm ready do you want those yes okay this is from jeremy both jeremy and cameron written wrote in about this uh cameron says though uh you have to start with a great 90s animated series as that was my first introduction to the character specifically i want to mention the time spider-man was fighting the portal creating d-list villain the spot and defeats him by using his
Starting point is 01:03:49 spider senses to guide to guide him to punch the spot in the mouth through one of the open portals uh then comes the icing on the cake as spider-man quips well that hit the spot yeah nice that being my fist yes exactly uh camille says what if Aunt May died instead of Uncle Ben? It's one of my favourite Spider-Man stories as I think it's an amazing comic, a spectacular storyline and an ultimate twist. I haven't read that one. I also haven't read that one.
Starting point is 01:04:14 Evan says, In thinking about this, there is a vast number of Spider-Man stories. There's so many at this point. Yes. Yeah. We're way behind. I'm surprised that we didn't mention them all though
Starting point is 01:04:24 because we're so thorough. We are very thorough. I think we, look, there's been 50 odd years of Spider-Man stories. I think we covered 49 years. Yeah, exactly. Evan says, Drew, the ends of the Earth story arc,
Starting point is 01:04:36 Spider-Man, clad in new armor, punches Al Gore in the face. He sent me pictures of that and yeah, he does. It's pretty cool. Great. Why wouldn't you punch al gore in the face what's he ever done except invent the internet did he no well he says that he didn't as well doesn't he yeah like i don't know why people think that anyway evan says different evan
Starting point is 01:04:55 one of the first ultimate spider-man stories is with the kingpin it uh in it spider-man gets a video of kingpin crushing a man's head with his bare hands and gives it to the police. The Kingpin doesn't get arrested and moves to South America, but keeps control of his empire. This is a great storyline because it shows that despite all of his power, Spider-Man cannot legally touch the Kingpin. Also, he can't stop him from crushing a man's head. Certainly not.
Starting point is 01:05:17 He can watch it on video again and again. Yeah. That sounds really cool. Jordan says, in a universe where Peter Parker and Mary Jane try to have kids, but his sperm is so radioactive it kills the love of his life. Are you familiar with that one? I am not familiar with that one. It's like a future thing. I've never read it, but yeah, I always see it come up.
Starting point is 01:05:35 Patrick says, In the finale of the recent Spider-Man run, Otto Octavius gave Peter Parker back control of his body because he failed to defeat the Green Goblin. When Spider-Man confronts the Goblin, the Goblin is mocking how Otto was a terrible Spider-Man. But then Peter gave a crack to Osborn's purse and Osborn knows it's now Peter.
Starting point is 01:05:54 And he gets the funniest look of fear in his eyes and he immediately wants to run away. That's actually pretty good. He sent the panels of that as well. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's really cool. That's very Spider-Man. Yeah, exactly.
Starting point is 01:06:02 Official Arsenal says, Hello, I listen to your podcast and you said you're doing best and worst moments. We were, correct. We're doing it now. Oh, is that what we're doing? He decided to email about Spider Island. The story is about when New York, brackets forget about it, is infected by a spider virus that gives them spider powers
Starting point is 01:06:19 and the Jackal makes all the bad people. God damn it. The Jackal clone saga. Anyway, continue. Jackal makes all the bad people. God damn it. The Jackal clone saga. Anyway, continue. Jackal makes all the bad people with spider powers attack New York. So Peter Parker gets a camera and tells the world he's been infected and tells all the good New Yorkers to band together to stop the Jackal army. Unfortunately, this cover is misleading,
Starting point is 01:06:37 which is probably why people might not like it. Did you like it? It was okay. Also, the Jackal infects everybody with this spider virus through bed bugs. Oh, that's pretty smart, I guess. Yeah, that makes sense. I was reading some... This is from Jay.
Starting point is 01:06:52 I was reading some classic Spider-Man comics and came across this page, which is Spider-Man stealing some guy's food. Maybe they used this as an inspiration for Spider-Man 2's pizza scene. It's a possibility, isn't it? Yeah. There you go. Well, look, there are many more Spider-Man moments. No, that's it. There are no more Spider-Man 2's pizza scene. It's a possibility, isn't it? Yeah. There you go. Well, look, there are many more Spider-Man moments. No, that's it.
Starting point is 01:07:07 There are no more Spider-Man moments. Thank you. But we'll probably do closer to when there's some official Spider-Man announcements. We might do, like, just a Spider-Man episode where we just talk about his powers and stuff. Oh, yeah, sure. We do that sometimes, don't we? People are unfamiliar with his powers. Exactly.
Starting point is 01:07:21 So we should probably do that. Yeah. Actually, maybe we won't do that. Should we? Ah, look. We'll do something Spider-Man at. Yeah. Actually, maybe we won't do that. Should we? Ah, look. We'll do something Spider-Man at some point. Oh, sure.
Starting point is 01:07:28 Did we do the movie? Let's resolve to never talk about Spider-Man again. Okay. Yeah. Done. Can we talk about the clone side? Can we talk about the clone
Starting point is 01:07:36 versions of Spider-Man? Like all of them? Yeah. Sure. Totally. Yeah. We can talk about that weird demonic version where he's got
Starting point is 01:07:42 four extra arms. Ah, ah, doppelganger. There we go. Yeah. We can talk about that weird demonic version where he's got four extra arms. Oh, Doppelganger. There we go. Yeah. We can talk about the storyline where Spider-Man goes to Morbius, the living vampire, for some reason. Yes. I can't remember why.
Starting point is 01:07:54 And then he grows four extra arms. And he has to go around the city with four extra arms. What about the one where Peter Parker dies and then he turns into a big spider and then he bursts out of the spider? Oh, yeah. Do you remember that bursts out of the spider. Oh yeah. Do you remember that one? I remember that one. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:08:07 What was that? Anyway, sorry if I missed your email or tweet or whatever. Um, as I said, I quickly did this before the show, but thank you to everybody, everybody who's written in for some moments so much.
Starting point is 01:08:16 So we're going to reward you now with our segment. What we read in what we gonna read. I'm doing the thing. What are we going to read? I'm doing the thing. What are we reading today? It's not a good reward, is it? Not really. I mean, we're going to get it anyway. It's not really.
Starting point is 01:08:35 What have you been reading this week? Well, actually, I've been reading a few things, but I wanted to mention something I'm going to read. Yeah. I tried to get a copy of it on Comixology. It's not there. It's called Letters for the Rhino. Letters for the Rhino.
Starting point is 01:08:47 Yeah. It's, you know, what's that called? Letters for Algernon? Oh, sure. Yep. It's that, except it's with the rhino. Okay. Because I went on that Plumbing the Death Star show.
Starting point is 01:08:58 Yeah. I forgot to mention, last week I was on an episode where we talk about Spider-Man. Oh, yes. So you can go and listen to that. It's on iTunes already. Plumbing the Death Star. What's happened to the spider-man powers or something also i'm going in tomorrow to do more episodes of that show oh yeah you can't come though oh no because you can't come because you're busy i don't know if i am busy though then come all right all right done great yeah uh i might be busy i'll check anyway uh so yeah i really want
Starting point is 01:09:23 to read that but i guess i going to have to buy a hard copy or get it off Pirate Bay or whatever. Sure. So that's it. But apparently it's quite... That's on you, Marvel. Yeah, exactly. Don't make me steal.
Starting point is 01:09:33 You're the bad guy. But yeah, I want to read that. And I'll be reading a bunch of other stuff, which I'll probably talk about another week. Actually, I want to read... There's a Superman secret identity. I've got a copy of it. It's sitting on my shelf.
Starting point is 01:09:45 It's been staring at me. Yep. And it's about a guy who's called Clark Kent, but he's not Superman. He gets Superman powers. Can I borrow it? No, I want to read it. Oh.
Starting point is 01:09:53 I'll be sitting there. When I'm on my computer, I look up and it's there. I'm like, I want to read that. But I'm like, I can't. Can I borrow it? Fine. Great. Good.
Starting point is 01:10:00 What I'm going to read, Superman's Secret Identity. What are you going to read? You know what? I haven't, after a blitz last week of reading stuff and watching stuff, I haven't really done any this week. Did you continue your Game of Thrones? Yes, a little bit. Yay!
Starting point is 01:10:16 I'm probably going to watch, did we talk about Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt? No. It's the new Tina Fey series. Oh, okay. No, I know what it is, but no, we haven't talked about it. Okay. I watched a couple episodes of that.
Starting point is 01:10:26 It's pretty good. Yep. It's, what's her face? Erin from The Office. Erin from The Office. Ellie Kemper, who was, the premise is that she spent her entire, like, she spent years underground in a bunker because a cult leader told her that the world was going to end. And now she's out back in the world,
Starting point is 01:10:48 but she's missing sort of years of experience and she doesn't know what's happening in the world. Is this a female version of Blast from the past? Yeah, kind of. It's pretty good. I don't know. I'm not... It's not as 30 Rock as 30 Rock.
Starting point is 01:11:01 Would you say, is it more New Girl or is it more 30 Rock? It's more 30 Rock. Good. Yeah, it's more 30 Girl or is it more 30 Rock? It's more 30 Rock. Good. Yeah, it's more 30 Rock. And it's got, yeah. That's what I've seen. Pretty good, yeah. And I'm going to watch
Starting point is 01:11:10 because people keep recommending it, The Last Man on Earth. Oh, is that out? Yeah. How many episodes is that? Heaps. Yeah, I'm going to watch that. Yeah, with Will Forte.
Starting point is 01:11:18 It's supposed to be amazing. Will Forte. He is The Last Man on Earth but it's not like depressing or whatever, isn't it? It's not like... Look, I haven't watched it yet. I'm telling you. It's what I'm going to read, all right? It's a forte. He is the last man on earth, but it's not like depressing or whatever, is it? It's not like... Look, I haven't watched it yet. I'm telling you.
Starting point is 01:11:26 It's what I'm going to read, all right? It's God. Got an email here, though. Yes. From the official, unofficial of the podcast, Frank. He said he loves the pod and he wants to... I presume he means this one. Yeah, sure.
Starting point is 01:11:38 And he'd like to make the suggestion for what we're reading. East of West. I've been reading... Actually, you know what? I have been reading East of West. I keep seeing it and I'm like, I should read that.
Starting point is 01:11:47 That is why, because last week I talked about The Dying and the Dead. That's great. I read it. Good, right? Yes. Yeah, I don't know when
Starting point is 01:11:52 the next issue's coming out. It was good though. Yeah, and it was 60 pages and like two books. It was so many pages. Anyway, so Jonathan Hickman who wrote that, who also wrote,
Starting point is 01:12:03 like he did a fantastic fall run and he's done heaps of other stuff he wrote uh east of west okay which is um it's set in a sort of a parallel universe united states would you say it's like a sci-fi bit of a western setting and an apocalypse happening with great characters and you'll love it i would say that but i don't know if you'd love it okay it's pretty good though yeah i've been getting through that it's uh yeah so i have been reading something this week great fantastic and it's kind of yeah it's kind of it's a it's a parallel universe united states where nazi germany won no it's where the the russians won no stop it's the british one no the greens won oh our worst nightmare that is their worst nightmare but sort of the United States has been splitting up
Starting point is 01:12:45 into like Native American territories and you know different it's not a United States ultimately is it the modern day or is it slightly future
Starting point is 01:12:53 it is future but it's tough to say I don't want your future oh that's good sorry God and it's sort of and the horsemen of the apocalypse
Starting point is 01:13:02 have returned oh no and they're attempting well three of, no. And they're attempting... Well, three of them have returned. And they're attempting to track down Death, who has betrayed them in some way, who is also walking the earth. Sweet.
Starting point is 01:13:13 And it's a whole situation. That sounds great. Is it finished? Or is it still going? Yes, it is finished. Great. I like it when things are finished. Then I'll know that it will finish.
Starting point is 01:13:21 Cool. All right. Thank you, Frank. And thank you, Mason. And thank you, Mason, for jumping in and crushing Frank's email i'm loving i'm loving doing that this week it's good uh i gotta uh it's not let's read some letters i guess oh yeah do you want me to read the first one yes all right could you also read all of them yeah i guess so like at once and then we'll answer them all right good hi i was listening to your podcast where you mentioned the film i robot and how uh
Starting point is 01:13:42 was really big on product placement and it reminded me of this when i robot came out my parents received an invitation to go and see it in the cinema for free the invitation came from audi well my parents used to have an uh an old audi once this means the free movie tickets were given to everyone who owned an audi and apparently everyone who used to own an audi the only way for them to seem more desperate for people to see the film was them to give free movie tickets to everyone who had ever ridden in an Audi at least once in their life. Anyway, my parents saw the film
Starting point is 01:14:12 and the only thing my dad said about it was there was a pretty cool new Audi in it. That's great. Thanks for the awesome podcast from Sarah. Well, they know their audience, don't they? I think they've nailed that. P.S. We live in Iceland, a country with a population of 320, people how many outies good question how many outies per man
Starting point is 01:14:31 is that what you're saying yeah that's what i'm saying sorry not gender specific thank you good uh so it isn't even remotely worthy uh market for a blockbuster also i've already claimed the title of icelandic iceland Icelandic Viking of the podcast. Love it. There we go. That's good. They should have also given free tickets to everybody who had Converse. Thank you.
Starting point is 01:14:50 Yep, exactly. Everybody who had a robotic arm. Yep. Will Smith should have gotten some free tickets at least. I don't know if he had kids back then, but at least some for him and his wife. I'm sure he had kids back then. It was in 2004. Right.
Starting point is 01:15:02 Yeah. Okay. Was that a good movie? No. This is from another email person. I recently put a ban on myself that prevents me from watching any trailers for Age of Ultron. Okay, good call. Like you, Mason.
Starting point is 01:15:16 Yes. I've seen the first trailer roughly 100 times and now I feel like I know way too much about the film. I've also been avoiding any rumour speculation about the movie and intend to do the same thing for Civil War and Batman vs. Superman. I was wondering if there are any films that you want to see or wish you could have seen without knowing anything about them. Love the show and thanks for reading it. Thanks for reading. Dan, Newcastle, England.
Starting point is 01:15:36 P.S. Can I be the official Dark Knight of the show? Yes. Yes. Anything that you wish you could have seen without spoilering the twist? Terminator 2. Judgement Day. Yes, correct. Yeah. Yep. That's it? Yes.
Starting point is 01:15:48 What about Avatar? Was there any twist at all in Avatar? No. Then no. Yeah, I don't think. No. Dark City spoils itself in the first. Boy, does it.
Starting point is 01:16:02 That would have been a way better movie. I mean, it's still a good movie. Yeah, but the Dark City, there's an opening crawl to it that explains exactly what's going to happen in the movie. Yeah, and then it does. Yeah, and then it does. But if you skip that, it's a great kind of what's kind of happening in this movie. And I think in the director's cut, that's been taken out. But if you skip that movie's amazing yeah it
Starting point is 01:16:26 is it's pretty good but i guess they're like we need to warn people going in yeah this is going to be a little bit weird i think if that is the audience are dumb if it had to come after the matrix i think they wouldn't have put it in okay yeah yeah i'm guessing right because i didn't spoil the matrix twist actually did they in the trailers it's just kind of like and it's just kung fu yeah that's whatever else trying to think if there is anything i like when a movie even when i've learned a lot about it and it still tricks me like winter soldier i thought i knew quite a bit about it going in i was still like twist good job yeah like i enjoy that whether it's so under wraps that you can't or they don't release
Starting point is 01:17:05 anything in the trailer or nothing leaks yeah yeah that spoils it but also i find that if i'm watching a movie and it's good even if i know a lot about it i forget as i'm watching it oh interesting but if if i'm kind of not really into it i'm like oh when's this bit gonna happen or whatever oh sure yeah uh-huh yeah but that's just me so yeah exactly sometimes you watch a film and you go well that big the big explosion hasn't happened yet. And we've got 10 minutes left, so it has to happen. It has to happen. Exactly.
Starting point is 01:17:29 Yeah. This is from Chris. Hi, Chris. I'm a new listener to the podcast, enjoying it so far, but I'll be honest, I'm not going to go back and catch up with the 70 episodes I've missed. Why would you? I wouldn't.
Starting point is 01:17:42 Also, if you go back, the audio quality is going to be so and the content is not going to be great either so if you've discussed it before ignore this but also all the news will be out of date
Starting point is 01:17:52 yeah never really think about that yeah who cares do you want to do non-news episodes then no we have to keep topical
Starting point is 01:17:59 I know got to be fresh yeah I know also it'll be a fun retro look at the olden times yeah if you loved six months ago, you'll love it. But one of the best sci-fi movies of the century.
Starting point is 01:18:11 I'm a big fan of Children of Men and Sunshine. We've sort of talked about this, I guess. So if you like either of those, I feel somewhat validated in my existence. Keep up the good work, Chris. As we know, Sunshine is the best movie of all time. It's not, though, is it? It's pretty good. It's one of my faves.
Starting point is 01:18:24 I know. So it's the best movie of all time. It's not though, is it? It's pretty good. It's one of my faves. I know. So it's the best movie of all time, but it's one of your favourites. It's the best movie of all time, but it's not your favourite movie. That's weird. You convinced me when you said, no, it's not. Then I went, oh. Oh, you doubted yourself. Yeah, exactly.
Starting point is 01:18:36 Yeah, I really enjoy that movie a lot. Do you have like a recent sci-fi that you love? Recent? Chappie. No, it's pretty good. There's an episode on it. There is, isn't there? Yes.
Starting point is 01:18:48 Don't go back though. Oh, recent sci-fi that's solid. I'll give you one. Yes. Moon. Moon is good. Inception I thought was, it's less, I mean, it's not crazy sci-fi. And a lot of it, when you think about it, some of it doesn't make any sense.
Starting point is 01:19:03 No. All the inceptioning. Sure, sure yeah most of the inceptioning but i think that's a good solid mainstream smart action movie that has some sci-fi elements to it i'd agree with that and i never agree with you um people keep recommending primer and i haven't seen it right yeah i will say prop i'll get around to it district nine's great obviously yeah totally well Children of Men he mentioned here I love Children of Men it's amazing
Starting point is 01:19:28 it's the only movie that Clive Owen's done that's worth watching what about Sin City yeah I guess so what about King Arthur oh yeah
Starting point is 01:19:37 what was that one where he was like a sort of a spy for a company and Julia Roberts was in it oh yeah that was pretty good what was that called?
Starting point is 01:19:45 Paul Giamatti? Big Lies or something. Get him up, yeah. Get him, yeah. Yeah, that was good. Whatever that was. Find out what that one was called. Shoot him up.
Starting point is 01:19:54 Not good. I didn't like Shoot Him Up. Yeah. Yeah, I thought that was going to be way better. It's a bit where he shoots with carrots though. Oh yeah.
Starting point is 01:20:02 Do you remember that? Nope. I'm trying to think if there's anything else. Any Clive Owen movies. That's what we're talking about we're just yeah this is yeah got any more recent sci-fi duplicity was the name of that film oh okay what about um looper no we've discussed it's here i bet it is picture of avatar no in time no In Time was good. Are you serious? Hang on, what are we talking about? The one with... Oh, Jude Law or whatever it was.
Starting point is 01:20:30 No, Justin Timberlake. No, okay, I'm thinking of About Time. Which is great. Edge of Tomorrow. Yep, that was good. That was really solid. War of the Worlds. Not as good.
Starting point is 01:20:38 You know what? I really liked Oblivion. Not everybody likes Oblivion, but I liked Oblivion a lot. I haven't seen it, but I should get to it. What about WALL-E? Didn't see it. What about Starship it, but I should get to it. What about WALL-E? Didn't see it. What about Starship Troopers 3? Might have seen it.
Starting point is 01:20:49 It's all right. Great. Actually, no, it's not. It's terrible. Great. Interstellar. You know my thoughts on Interstellar. You think it's okay.
Starting point is 01:20:57 I think it's okay. Yeah, all of those are fine. Any of those movies you watch would be fine. Great. Yeah. One more letter, Mason of those are fine. Any of those movies you watch would be fine. Great. Yeah. One more letter, Mason. Oh yes. This is from Lewis Campbell, the official devil of the podcast.
Starting point is 01:21:10 Oh. Which one though? It needs to be specific. Oh. We're going to name it. Which one do you want? Oh, I reckon like a weird baby devil and he's in like a onesie with a butt flap, like a red onesie and he's got the horns and a little pitchfork.
Starting point is 01:21:23 I was going to go with the Dave Grohl devil from Tenacious D. Oh, sure. Let's go with the baby. Okay, great. Because it's more humiliating. I just want to say thank you. Be specific. After winning a superhero quiz last night, a few of the questions would have completely
Starting point is 01:21:36 stumped me if I hadn't listened to your podcast over and over again in the past year. They asked me if there was such a thing as the Pet Avengers, and I was like, yes, there is. They also asked me about the years of superhero... That's not a very good Twitter request. Is it? Or yes or no? Because I would have guessed yes,
Starting point is 01:21:54 even though I didn't know the answer. Yeah. They also asked about the years of the superhero film releases, including Michael Keaton, Batman, a film you guys can't bloody mention without saying 1989. So anyways, thanks a bunch. Keep up the good work. Grab that goddamn gem.
Starting point is 01:22:08 I hope you won a meat tray. I won one once. Oh, yeah? It was great. Trey Coldcuts? Yeah, it's really good. P.S. What is your opinion on quizzes?
Starting point is 01:22:16 You seem like the kind of guys who would probably win them more often than not, but I also get the impression that you can't be arsed with them. Yeah, that's pretty accurate. You won that meat tray, though. I did. No, that was in a raffle at an RSL. My dad having a beer. It's pretty good.
Starting point is 01:22:28 But I wasn't going to say. I don't go to quizzes because I don't want to write. Don't give me the pen. But then I also get too involved in it. Yeah, okay, right. I get that. And I think you mentioned before. Sometimes if you know too much
Starting point is 01:22:45 know too much yeah that's a problem it's like that episode of The Office where is Spock yeah exactly yeah yeah
Starting point is 01:22:51 well somebody will ask you know there'll be a question about Robin and I'm like well which Robin there are so many Robins do you mean you probably mean Dick Grayson
Starting point is 01:22:59 but maybe you don't maybe it's just a question from the bloody you picked up an issue in the most recent issue so it's Damian Wayne. Which one is it? God damn it. Really good point.
Starting point is 01:23:08 Yeah. Yeah. Is it Tim Drake? Because now technically he was never Robin, so come on. Yeah, I like trivia. I'm no good at sport. I'm good at movies and films and my general knowledge is okay, but sport, I fall down. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:23:22 Yeah. I'm not a, yeah, like if i'm at an event and there's a trivia thing i'll probably join in but i'm not gonna i'm not a regular trivia guy like there's always like a tuesday night trivia at the blah blah and everybody's got a smartphone now yeah how do you you just have to trust that people aren't cheating i remember i went to one once and there was this group there that were always there every week and they had books like trivia books they bought with them like what is that You really care that much? Like books with answers to trivia in them?
Starting point is 01:23:49 Yeah, answers like specifically. Huh. Odd? Yeah, but not like encyclopedias. No, like little pocketbook kind of things. Of trivia. Yeah. Right.
Starting point is 01:23:59 So if somebody asks you a question about sport, you go to the sports section and there's interesting trivia. Wow, that's weird. Yeah. But I guess technically within the rules? I guess so. Yeah. No smartphones, but you can bring books.
Starting point is 01:24:10 Yeah. Ugh. Yeah. Jeez. Oh, sorry. Last one. Aaron just wanted to wish him congratulations because he had a son and he named him Benjamin Leonard Bruce Wayne Spite.
Starting point is 01:24:20 S-P-E-I-G-H-T. Spate. Spate. Well, I hope you have a spate of good luck with your child. Very good. Aaron Spate. Very good. That's great news.
Starting point is 01:24:29 Keep up the good having a baby work. Absolutely. I heard it's going to be very exhausting, but also the best time of your life, Mason. Oh, okay. You have to go help. Oh, fair enough. Like a nanny.
Starting point is 01:24:41 Yeah, no, that's all right. Cool. All right. Well, that's the show, but there's one more thing we've got to do. Last week we promised we'd give away two t-shirts. So I've emailed you a list, right? Oh, fair enough. Like a nanny. Yeah, no, that's all right. Yeah, cool. All right, well, that's the show, but there's one more thing we've got to do. Last week we promised we'd give away two t-shirts. So I've emailed you a list, right? Oh, yep.
Starting point is 01:24:49 Of all the people who have contributed to either the Patreon or went on the Bandcamp and downloaded the Watchmen commentary. Absolutely. So we have Watchmen commentary on Bandcamp. People seem to really enjoy it. WeeklyPlanetPod.Bandcamp.com. No, you changed it. I changed it to WeeklyPlanetPod. Starting point is 01:26:38 You are Nathan. That is so good. How good is that? Yeah, that's great. I'm really excited. Is that on YouTube? Yeah, it's on YouTube. So yeah, thank you very much for that.
Starting point is 01:26:47 Man, he could scam me anytime. Absolutely, he could. With one of his scams where he's a pilot or something. Or a school teacher. Great suit as well. Yeah, he looks good, doesn't he? Yeah, he looks great. Yeah.

Starting point is 01:27:15 Definitely. That's what I'm saying there. Mine is Jack Densley, and he also supports us. In some way. Yes, in some way, yeah. Thanks, guys. Thanks, everybody. Sorry we can't give everyone a T-shirt, but to be fair. Why can't we give everyone a T-shirt? in some way yes in some way yeah thanks guys thanks everybody sorry we can't give
Starting point is 01:27:25 everyone a t-shirt but to be fair why can't we give everyone a t-shirt monetary reasons idiots oh yeah that's actually a really good reason
Starting point is 01:27:32 yeah so really super cool if you want to harass more celebrities to say stuff about us we would love that please do yeah
Starting point is 01:27:42 alright that's the show for this week okay upcoming episodes, right? Is what we're doing. I'm ready. We're going to do a Fast and the Furious. Okay.
Starting point is 01:27:48 Maybe not next week. I don't think it's out next week. We're going to do a Daredevil because Daredevil is coming up. Great. But we might do like just a Daredevil episode just about Daredevil. Oh, sure, yeah. So that'll be like the next three weeks. Hey, guess what?
Starting point is 01:27:58 He's blind. That's it. Yep. He's blind and sort of religious. Sometimes he's- I've covered the episode. Let's take a week off. The Daredevil comes out on the Friday or the Saturday,
Starting point is 01:28:08 and then we do an episode on the Sunday, and I've got a wedding on the Saturday all day that I don't want to go to. Fantastic. I think I've made that publicly known. So do we, though, wait a week and do it the week after? Because it's Netflix. It drops all at once. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 01:28:21 Should we watch the whole thing? In a day and then do it, or should we let people watch it over a week and then do it? Then we should wait at once. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Should we watch the whole thing? In a day and then do it or should we let people watch it over a week and then do it? Maybe we should wait a week. Yeah, yeah. Like maybe give general thoughts
Starting point is 01:28:30 but anyway, whatever. We'll think about it. Sure. Thanks everybody for watching the show. We appreciate it. Watching the show. Just, yes.
Starting point is 01:28:37 Thanks everyone for watching a show of any kind. Thank you for keeping the entertainment industry rolling along because otherwise we'd have nothing to talk about.
Starting point is 01:28:44 Exactly. Yeah, get out there. Grab that gem. If you want to email the show, do so. Weekly Planet Pod, Gmail, Facebook, Twitter. Yep. You're at? I'm at Wikipedia Brown on Twitter.

I'm taking my headphones off because I've got to go to the yeah all right i'm ending it now you're ending it now yes what

Definitely. It's weird. I'm going. What did you have to drink earlier? Maybe that's the issue. I just drink a lot of water. I keep hydrated.
Starting point is 01:29:29 Huh. And also, it's important to moisturize. Oh, yeah. Start from a young age. I'm really lazy. Okay, grab that jam, guys. Bye.
