Starting point is 00:00:25 Register today at sunrisechallenge.ca. That's sunrisechallenge.ca. Welcome back everybody to another episode of The Weekly Planet, official podcast of ComicBookMovie.com where we talk movies and comics and TV shows. My name is James, also known as Mr. Sunday. With me as always, my co-host Nick Mason. Nailed it, first time.
Starting point is 00:00:55 Woo! It's not the same this week. It's not, is it? No, it can't be anymore. Comic-Con's over. Is it though? I'm still feeling the reverb. We can talk about that.
Starting point is 00:01:04 Let's talk about reverb reverb about what we missed out on from last week absolutely yeah we'll get to that though do you want to talk about a live action aladdin film first no well good because this is a live action aladdin prequel oh great that's even better so every prequel is great isn't that the rule every prequel you know what do you care for rule? Every prequel. You know what? Do you care for Disney reboots with live action, but they're gritty and they're before? Maleficent and bloody... Not Cinderella.
Starting point is 00:01:33 Cinderella's actually good because they just told the story of Cinderella, but they did it well. I'm just going to let you keep talking. It's a good film, Mason. It's good for everybody. Oh, yes. But then you've got that...
Starting point is 00:01:44 What's that Mad Hatter one that Johnny Depp's wearing a dumb hat tim burton did it alice in wonderland i think that's a sequel i don't know whatever it's all gritty retellings and i don't care for it but anyway this movie is it's the origins of genies prequel live action so which means it'd have to be didn't the genie say in Aladdin, 10,000 years in the lamp or whatever? Oh, yeah. So is that set 10,000 years before Aladdin, which is set like, what, 2,000 years ago?
Starting point is 00:02:15 It's set in the 90s, so, oh, boy. So how's that going to go? Yeah. Like that's, what is there 10,000 years ago? Imagine the shoulder pads 10,000 years ago. Huge. There's nothing going on there, though, is there, 10,000 years ago? Imagine the shoulder pads 10,000 years ago. Huge. There's nothing going on there though, is there? 10,000 years ago?
Starting point is 00:02:28 No, there was nothing interesting happen ultimately. Although I suppose it would be quite similar. Yeah. Yeah. Just dirt and stalls. Yeah, dirt and stalls. Yeah. Okay, great.
Starting point is 00:02:38 Is any part of you want to see that movie? No. Well, no. And even then, is it the origin of the robin williams genie because if it is do you cast somebody to do a robin williams impression live action or do you get like yeah do you get a wacky guy do you make it a wacky genie or is it going to be a gritty genie like or is he going to be i think they'd probably make it if i had to guess and we'll see it eventually yeah he'll be like like a young and earnest genie like a kind of like a young and hopeful genie because they won't they surely
Starting point is 00:03:12 couldn't attempt to make it funny right these live action ones are not funny surely i'm trying to think maleficent wasn't very funny correct and i didn't see the alice in wonderland one because it looks like crap but again i think they'd be better suited to just make a live-action Aladdin. Because like I said with Cinderella... No, you can't mess with the classics. I'm not even saying that it is a classic or it's a film that I love. You're saying it's not a classic and you hate it. I'm saying that and everybody involved with it, dead or alive.
Starting point is 00:03:41 No, what I'm saying is nobody's going to do a live-action. Like Robert Williams just died. They're not going to do a live action. Like, Robert Williams just died. They're not going to do a live action version of Aladdin. It's not going to happen. But if it's a prequel, do you think they could build to a live action version of Aladdin? No, not at all. I'm telling you, man, it could happen. If they could remake Cinderella.
Starting point is 00:03:59 It sounds like Hannibal. The TV show? Yeah, we could do a gritty prequel TV series Of Aladdin that leads to the movie Aladdin That would be fantastic And it starts out real brutal and gritty And it gets wackier and wackier until there are songs But look, Kenneth Branagh did Cinderella And I'm saying that's quite a good movie for what it is
Starting point is 00:04:19 Get into it, Mason So get Branagh is what we're saying Yeah, just get Branagh I've heard there's also rumblings that they're trying to that they want to get Branagh back rumblings in the Bronx
Starting point is 00:04:28 yes always but also they want to get Branagh back for Branagh back for Thor Ragnarok okay because you know
Starting point is 00:04:35 people didn't love Thor the Dark World I did did you look I go back and forth right now at this very second I bloody loved it
Starting point is 00:04:43 you bloody loved it yeah yeah great ask me again at the end of the podcast I'll probably forget yeah I'll forget too there you go Right now, at this very second, I bloody loved it. You bloody loved it. Yeah. Yeah, great. Ask me again at the end of the podcast. I'll probably forget. Yeah, I'll forget too. Yeah, there you go. Did you see the picture of Apocalypse Day that was released?
Starting point is 00:04:52 Yes. He looks like a Power Rangers villain. He does. I was going to say, he looks like Ivan Ooze. I got pictures just in case. Oh, there's an actual Power Rangers villain that he looks like. Do you want to see it? Yes.
Starting point is 00:05:01 Okay, hang on. This is great podcasting, isn't it? We'll edit this out. We won't. Okay, hang on. This is great podcasting, isn't it? We'll edit this out. We won't. So this is him. Yes, great. With Olivia Munn as Psylocke. Yep.
Starting point is 00:05:10 And this is Ivan Ooze. No, I think you've mixed those up. That's Apocalypse. Oh, sorry. Yeah, you're right. I have. Switch back to Ivan Ooze. Yeah, that's Ivan Ooze.
Starting point is 00:05:19 That's Ivan Ooze. You're right. Next to Olivia Munn. Yeah, correct. Yeah. Okay, good. What's that? What are you doing? Yeah, it looks... You're right. Next to Olivia Munn. Yeah, correct. Yeah. Okay, good. What's that? What are you doing?
Starting point is 00:05:26 Yeah, it looks... It's interesting, right? Yeah. I mean, in this X-Men universe, they didn't make a giant juggernaut. They put Vinnie Jones in a rubber muscle suit. Yeah, so you'd think this version of Apocalypse would look a little more human, right? Yeah, but this is like a weird mix. You know what the problem with this suit is?
Starting point is 00:05:44 It's kind of all built up and there's a lot going on there and big shoulder pads and the neck thing but then he's just got a regular human face yeah it looks weird i was expecting i was expecting mostly normal yeah with the weird apocalypse lips yeah have the weird exactly line across yeah but it's yeah just just a guy he looks like an accountant who's been spray-painted purple. Storm looks pretty good, though. Yeah, Storm looks great. Yeah, definitely. I completely agree.
Starting point is 00:06:10 What do you think of Olivia Munn's outfit? Some people are saying it looks like cosplay. Sure. I mean, it's the 80s. Yeah, it's the 80s. It's fine. Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:19 Yeah, look, I'm sure it's going to be fine. The leaked trailer that I saw looked pretty solid. So last week, i think i said yeah the reception from comic-con a lot of people were saying he looked really good but he doesn't doesn't look very good does he no who was the last villain i think it's the same thing with the sentinels but i i also feel that there's a there's generally speaking there's a map like we've wooed about stuff at comic-con before. But there's a lot of, there's a massive amount of goodwill at Comic-Con, and it does tend to fade, I feel.
Starting point is 00:06:49 Yeah. There's a little bit of, people will woo anything, and then it's only later, once the hype disappears and the vibe goes away, that people are like, now that I think about it. That's the Phantom Menace effect. Correct. Absolutely. Yeah, no, I think you're right. You were saying about the Sentinels.
Starting point is 00:07:04 Yeah, Sentinels, Days of Future Past, like those designs, I'm like, oh, I don't love them, just do the ones from the comics. And then they're in the movies and they're live action, they're moving, and I was like, yeah, good enough, whatever. So I think this will be the same thing. I'll be like, yeah, it's fine, whatever. And it's also, the actor's name is... Something Isaacs.
Starting point is 00:07:21 Yeah, Oscar Isaacs, who's in the New Star Wars and a bunch of other stuff. So he's good. And he's clearly gone through a lot of time and effort to dress up like that. Yeah, because you've seen Ex Machina. I have. And he's just a regular guy, technology pioneer kind of guy. Beard and a singlet.
Starting point is 00:07:39 Yeah, beard and a singlet. He's got the shaved head and the beard. Just do that. He isn't a singlet. He's got the shaved head and the beard. Yeah. Just do that. I expected more.
Starting point is 00:07:50 I think I expected more of a kind of ancient Egypt, Jesus-y kind of Jerusalem kind of look. Sure. Not a weird Power Ranger. Not a weird Power Ranger. I think the reason he's done this, though, because Bryan Singer, he's teased the classic colourful X-Men costumes. Not made fun of them. Sure.
Starting point is 00:08:03 Not been like, how ridiculous some of them are. Yeah. So he fun of them. Sure, yeah. Not been like, how ridiculous. Some of them are. Yeah. But so- So he sort of suits the 80s vibe. Yeah. But he's not. He hasn't come from the 80s. No.
Starting point is 00:08:13 He's come from ancient Egypt. Yeah, yeah. I don't disagree with you. You're right. I don't understand why he's purple in this. He's not even purple in the comics. He's grey. He's got a grey, isn't he?
Starting point is 00:08:23 He's blue and grey. Grey and blue, yeah. But again, well, I'm outraged. Ask me again in 10 minutes how I feel. What's the opposite
Starting point is 00:08:31 of a woo? It's a boo, isn't it? It's a boo, yeah. Would you give it, you might give it a boo on the day.
Starting point is 00:08:35 We'll see how we go. So there you go. But again, maybe it's a case of, maybe they'll tweak the colour a little. Yeah, maybe they'll CGI the mouth.
Starting point is 00:08:42 Yeah. All sorts of things could happen. I don't know, man. Look, the X-Men movies, the last three have been pretty solid. That's true. So let's say that. Yeah, sure.
Starting point is 00:08:52 We have. We've said that. Also, he's got great 80s shoulder pads. That's it. Yeah. Now, apparently the people at DC are very optimistic about Constantine, the actor who played that guy in that cancelled TV show, Constantine.
Starting point is 00:09:09 Will it be appearing on Arrow at some point in the near future? There's a lot of casting news about Arrow recently. And some other things. They've cast Mr. Terrific. Very good. What's he good at? He's good at everything. Hence the name, you bloody goose. Yeah, but Mr. Fantastic isn't good at everything.
Starting point is 00:09:21 Oh, I see what you're saying. He's good at stretching. He's good at science. He's good at being a bad husband and father. Okay, he's good at science. Yep. He's good at stretching. He's good at science. He's good at being a bad husband and father. Okay, he's good at science. He's good at bloody, he'll do an autopsy. I could do an autopsy. No, you couldn't.
Starting point is 00:09:32 Hypothetically, if I had someone talk me through it, I probably could. Mr. Terrific could talk you through it. Yeah, exactly. No, he's like a technology guy and he's got, you know, 10 doctorates and 10 black belts in martial arts. Sounds like one of those fancy bloody academics which i don't care for correct all his schooling precisely that is he like does
Starting point is 00:09:50 he have a superpower uh he's invisible to technology but i think that might be the suit that he wears great yeah so like he can walk in front of a video camera i could do that with a sheet i'm just wow his powers aren't very good now that i think about well look i'm just saying yeah anyway uh he's he's echo kellum that's the actor who's playing okay cool never heard of him me neither but i saw a picture looks great i think there was someone else who was cast as well anarchy yeah that's it yeah don't know who that was either i don't know who the actor was oh no but he certainly looked brooding yeah he looked handsome and brooding in a generic cw way so they've already got a young handsome brooding. He looked handsome and brooding in a generic CW way.
Starting point is 00:10:27 They've already got a young, handsome, brooding guy. Aside from the lead guy, but the guy who plays Arsenal. And all the other guys. All the other guys. Except for the dad. Yeah. Yeah, he's pretty brooding though. And Diggle.
Starting point is 00:10:37 He's not really. No. He's brooding, but he's not CW brooding. More Diggle, I say. They were talking about, remember, there was rumour they were going to spit him off into a Green Lantern thing, but I think that's not going to happen. That's my understanding.
Starting point is 00:10:52 But Anarchy has been described as like he's a freelance... Hacker? Hacker for hire or something. I don't know. No, he's like a freelance criminal for hire or something like that, which isn't really Anarchy. No. He causes anarchy. That's his jam.
Starting point is 00:11:03 He probably has like a business number and stuff. Yeah. All those sorts of things. Absolutely. So yeah, Constantine appearing on Arrow. Great. Have we seen magic in Arrow before? What are you saying? I tuned out for a minute.
Starting point is 00:11:17 Are you saying the character of Constantine? Yes. Okay, great. What did you think I meant? Maybe just the actor playing another brooding guy. Oh, okay. Another brooding guy. CW stereotype?
Starting point is 00:11:24 Yeah, sure. Why not? Yeah, the actor playing another brooding CW stereotype. Yeah, sure, why not? Yeah, the Lazarus Pit? Yeah, I guess so. I mean, it's not really magic. It's more like healing qualities. Yeah, exactly. Healing qualities. And Ra's al Ghul is like 10,000 years old, as old as that genie.
Starting point is 00:11:39 So make of that what you will. That's great. I mean, you know what? Maybe they should have gone Constantine in Arrow and then tried to spin him off into a TV show. Yes, exactly. Maybe. Because that's how the Flash works.
Starting point is 00:11:49 No, no, no. Let's not see if this character has legs. Let's just throw him right out there. By all accounts, though, Constantine, not a bad show. We'll never know, will we? No. All copies were destroyed. Correct.
Starting point is 00:12:00 Did you see that weird Ezra Miller interview where he talks about the Flash? Somebody sent me the link. I didn't watch it. It's pretty good. He's pretty enthused. He's a weird dude, but that's okay. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:08 He was really enthusiastic. Was he fidgety? Yeah, he was very fidgety. Oh, great. Well, that's what we need. Yeah, yeah. But no, he seemed... It was an odd interview, but he was enthused.
Starting point is 00:12:16 And look, if I was a lesser man, I'd say he looked like he was high, but I'm not saying that because why would I throw around those wild accusations? I saw the thumbnail yeah do you think he's like a young johnny depp and that he's like oh i've got a scarf i'm interesting you know what i mean there's a bit of that going on definitely but you think he's a guy who just wears a lot of scarves or do you think he's like oh i'm gonna be the new johnny depp i'm wearing a scarf i'm interesting i'm wearing a scarf. I'm interesting. I'm wearing a hat. I'm interesting. I'm interesting. I don't know. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:12:47 I'm in Chile or something. Do you think? Yes. Do you think if you're interesting, you should just be interesting or should you wear dumb stuff? Do you know what I mean? Wow. That's a real chicken and the egg situation. I don't know how to answer that.
Starting point is 00:13:00 Interesting. So yeah, basically, anyway, he talked about the Flash and he was very exciting and he's got a real enthusiasm for Batman and whatever, but he also mentioned how that he loves the TV series, that he thinks it's really good, which is great. Because you would expect an answer like, well, I don't really watch that because I'm interested in whatever. Sure. I don't even own a television.
Starting point is 00:13:20 I hate that. I've talked about that before, but I'm not going to get into it. So, yeah, good on him. Great. I know we pay him've talked about that before, but I'm not going to get into it. So, yeah. Happy with... Good on him. Great. I know we pay him out most of the time, but... Only 100% of the times we've mentioned him. We haven't mentioned him that many times.
Starting point is 00:13:34 Yeah. Seems like a good dude. Did you watch the new trailer for Pan? The prequel to Peter Pan? The gritty retelling? I saw it before Ant-Man. Is there a new trailer? Yes.
Starting point is 00:13:46 I didn't watch it. Great. Let's talk about a different thing then do you want to talk about the suicide squad trailer yes now we talked about this last week we talked about the bootlegged version which was postage size stamp size and whatever uh any new stuff about that that you picked up on didn't uh wanna was it wanna brothers they're like the Their anti-piracy division or whatever was like, oh, there's an unbreakable bond between the movie studios and the people of Cobbacord that says, we'll release these trailers, but you never bootleg them and maybe we'll never come back because you broke the bond.
Starting point is 00:14:25 And everybody in the world was like, shut up nobody nobody believes that at all yeah well look i've got a letter about it so we can maybe talk about a bit later if you want but yeah they did pretty much do threaten the equivalent of taking our bat and ball and going home exactly yeah but yeah we can talk about that later or talk about it now let Or talk about it now. Let's talk about it now. Okay, great. Do you want me to read the letter? Yes. I'll skim down. Okay.
Starting point is 00:14:48 Hey, Nick and James, just wanted to say I love the podcast. This might seem a little ironic since I sent you to a video of the Rogue One trailer I took at Celebration when it comes to releasing footage that is shown in Hall H at Comic Con. I think it's a little unfair. Even though we all chose to camp out for hall h hall h i say call h i shouldn't that's an australian thing right there i think you should switch it up every time yeah uh and we put ourselves in that situation it sucks when the studios release the footage the same day or even a few days later marvel never does this i've been gone for five
Starting point is 00:15:17 years and all the great footage marvel shows always stays exclusive to comic-con for some time it's our little reward and that is usually how they treat it. So far, Fox has been doing that and not releasing the footage, but DC does the opposite. I just think that there's no point to showing us exclusive footage when they plan on releasing it the same day. Just my two cents, Cyrus. There you go.
Starting point is 00:15:38 Thoughts? Do you think it is unfair for the people who line up for hours and I can do whatever? Yeah, but I'm not one of those people, so who cares? Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, who cares yeah no he makes he makes a really uh a really good point i mean i mean you can't stop people from doing this i think you just have to accept the reality of the situation which is somebody will pirate it and it will go online and then studios can decide how to tackle that you know whichever way they see fit. And look, I understand the rationale of like, well,
Starting point is 00:16:07 Batman v Superman is the bigger one. Yeah. We'll make that the event. Yeah. And we'll release that one and then we won't release Suicide Squad. Yeah, yeah. It'll build a bit more hype. But at the same time, it's like a three-day event. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:16:16 Release one. Yep. Make that the big bombshell like on day one and people are like, oh my God, there's no way they can top that. And then you wait a day and then you release the next one and people are like, oh my God, we didn't way they can top that. And then you wait a day and then you release the next one. And people are like, oh my God, we didn't think they could top that. But then they top that. Does that mean you have to do like two panels or?
Starting point is 00:16:31 Do you see what I mean? Look, I'm an ideas man. I don't need to work out these finer details. I apologize. DC can work out the finer details. Good. You should, DC. That's what I was going to say.
Starting point is 00:16:42 I can't remember. Look, I think they're always going to release it though I think they knew this was going to happen and I feel like they just didn't want to release it the same day is this the equivalent
Starting point is 00:16:49 of a passive aggressive note on the fridge exactly wow yeah I don't mind you drinking my milk but if you could
Starting point is 00:16:56 replace it that'd be great like that kind of note yeah that kind of note yeah sweet I'll bloody drink all that milk I don't care
Starting point is 00:17:01 I don't even like milk I'll pour it out in the sink I don't give a fuck. What are we talking about? Can't remember. I'm going to have some water. Okay. It was cold in him.
Starting point is 00:17:11 Now it's hot. I don't know what's going on, mate. It's weather's all over the place. You're going through a menopause. I think I might be. Yeah, Suicide Squad trailer, though. We saw a little bit more. We did.
Starting point is 00:17:22 In terms of characters. Will Smith did. Did anyone point out anything in particular that you might enjoy in that trailer? Multiple times on Twitter? Just over and over again? Just a little detail that you might have enjoyed? Just forever? Look, there is the appearance of a man wearing a goat mask.
Starting point is 00:17:36 Or maybe he has a goat head. And a man with a goat head is your spirit animal, as we know. Correct. And by literal form. Yeah. So, that was very exciting for me. Sure. To see. Correct. And by literal form. Yeah. So that was very exciting for me. Sure. To see.
Starting point is 00:17:46 Yeah. It was a little bit, when it came up, I was like, huh, I'm going to get a lot of emails. But no, that's really cool. I'd like to think in some way, maybe it got through the universe, my image, and that's how it got in there. But I'd say it's just like a random weird thing. Probably a weird coincidence. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:18:01 It definitely is. Who am I? Bloody no one. Just a man stealing milk. You're not a giant eyeball, are you? No. Yeah, a lot of those masks are real weird choices, aren't they? Giant eyeball.
Starting point is 00:18:11 There's a man dressed as Batman. Another one. Oh, like the animated series Batman. Yeah, that was fun. Which is really weird. There's one with a baby's mask, like a baby's head, which is weird. Because you wouldn't shoot at like a man wearing a baby mask oh maybe you would just in case no just in case it was a real baby yeah you're right
Starting point is 00:18:28 yeah in some sort of weird man frame that's like that's a bloody thing the joker would do isn't it that's right yeah that's how the president's got away with it in that movie about stealing and extreme sports what's it called point break oh you don't want to shoot at the president correct in case it is the president might Might be the president, yeah. Then you have to go to special president's jail. I don't know where that is. It sounds bad. Anyway, what else happened in the Suicide Squad?
Starting point is 00:18:51 Harley Quinn. A bit more of that. Yep. What do you think of that interpretation of the character? We see a bit of backstory with a Joker. Yeah, we don't know the timeline yet. No. Really.
Starting point is 00:19:01 I feel like there's going to be flashbacks to like him torturing her and turning her into a Harley Quinn person and whatever I'd imagine yes yeah yeah Enchantress
Starting point is 00:19:13 bit of that she looks all dirty and weird that's right yeah yeah now I made a mistake in the trailer breakdown I did there's a bit where I thought it was her kissing Rick Flagg
Starting point is 00:19:20 oh yes but it's not it's like the sorry I thought it was Harley Quinn but it's Enchantress so I'm sorry everybody I should make a Harley Quinn, but it's Enchantress. Oh, I see. I'm sorry, everybody. I should make a follow-up video, but...
Starting point is 00:19:29 Takes time, doesn't it? I'm busy. Yeah. El Diablo, we see briefly. Fireman. Yes. Does fire stuff. Any thoughts on him?
Starting point is 00:19:37 Tattoos. A lot of tattoos in this, aren't there? Everyone's got a bloody set of tattoos. Everybody's... Yeah. A lot of sweet bro action. There's a lot of bro-ing down in this movie, I expect. Slipknot, he's very briefly, I think he's going to die early on.
Starting point is 00:19:51 One of them has to have the bomb explode in their head. Oh, absolutely, yeah. And I think it would be him because he's in like one shot. And he's not in that full cast. No, he's not, exactly. He's not in the full cast, so he's the cannon fodder. Are you surprised that there's not a scene in the trailer where they all walk out? Are you surprised there's not a scene in the trailer where they all walk out in front of a police lineup? And they're like, what are they, some kind of suicide squad or something?
Starting point is 00:20:13 From Guardians of the Galaxy, like they did that? Well, that's been done, so not really. But Will Smith does get the classic, what are we, some kind of suicide squad? Is he going to rap at the end or not? I think that's my question. Is he going to do is he gonna rap at the end or not i think that's my question is he gonna do a suicide squad rap at the end when's he bringing the raps back i don't think he's ever bringing the raps back okay in my mind he's he's in there's a parallel universe somewhere yes and will smith there's like a there's like a compilation cd it's called the
Starting point is 00:20:41 pursuit of rappiness and it's and it's all it's all the raps that Will Smith would have done at all the ends of his movies that he hasn't done. Fantastic. Because now he's a serious artist and he doesn't do it anymore. Well, he did. No, he didn't do it for... The last one he did was Men in Black 2. I was going to say he did it for 3, but he didn't.
Starting point is 00:20:58 I think they got Pitbull or someone to do that. I can't remember. Wow. You want a kid-friendly Will smith rap i think he'll only now do his old like raps on like the graham norton show or something yeah and it will go viral and everyone will be like isn't that carlton shows up exactly everybody goes wild yeah exactly so i think all i want is him to just rap a summary of what just happened in the film to the wild wild west instrumental every time that's all Wild Wild West instrumental every time.
Starting point is 00:21:26 That's all I want. Same instrumental? Same instrumental every time. What do you think started that? Do you think it was Vanilla Ice in Ninja Turtles 2? Do you think that's what kicked it off? The idea that you get a person who's in your movie to rap about that movie?
Starting point is 00:21:38 Yeah, I think it might have been. Email us in. Let us know. If you can think of a family-friendly rap that summarizes a movie prior to the events of teenage mutant ninja turtles 2 secret of the ooze you email us in you let us know so the rapper though has to be in the movie yes can it be a rap or can it be a song like prince in purple rain no it has to be a rap good yeah very clear yeah all right. Killer Croc? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:22:06 Looks good. Looks good in motion. Yeah. I think there's some CGI going on there on that face. Yeah, absolutely. We're going to talk about CGI faces later, I feel. Yes, we are. Yeah, after the show.
Starting point is 00:22:17 Yeah, yeah. Yeah, just over a molten. Getting back to Deadshot, the common complaint of that is that it's will smith like he's not doing dead shot he's just like i'm will smith i'm a family man you know we talked about that last week didn't we yeah yeah look the last thing we should definitely talk about is um the joker we finally got a good look at him uh we did yeah what did you think of that it's sort of growing on me yeah um the tattoos don't really seem to be taking center stage they're still really dumb yes but i don't know but if you notice like in that shot
Starting point is 00:22:53 they've actually cut out the damaged tattoo you can't see it on his head oh interesting which could mean that they're going to digitally remove it right or just remove it in general or they didn't want to show it because that would be really jarring to say that straight out. So you don't think you went like, that's Heath Ledger light or whatever. He's got a bit of the – it seems to be a combination of Heath Ledger and Jack Nicholson. It's kind of – it's a mishmash. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:23:21 Yeah, yeah, sure. I guess it would be hard considering there are two iconic portrayals of this character. Well, three if you can, Cesar Romero. I don't know. Yeah, yeah, sure. I guess it would be hard considering there are two iconic portrayals of this character. Well, three if you can, Cesar Romero. I do. Great. What about Mark Hamill? I do.
Starting point is 00:23:30 Yeah, okay, great. Hamill, isn't it? Hamill, yeah. Like Hamill. Yeah, sure. Great. Yeah, but I feel that the character is growing on me. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:23:40 Again, I think they're shooting for a kind of like he's some sort of rock star kind of. Yeah. It's like Sid Vicious and Nancy kind of. Yeah, sure. Like they're these doomed lovers and whatever against the world kind of thing. Except they're clowns. Yeah, except they're clowns. And he's this murderer, but at the same time he's got this charisma.
Starting point is 00:23:58 And so people sort of fall in line with that. That being said, this is set in the same universe as Batman v Superman. Yeah. That being said, this is set in the same universe as Batman v Superman. It's weird that in Man of Steel, like when these bad guys are showing up and cities are being destroyed or whatever, nobody's like, oh, this is like that time the Joker tried to blow everything up with a massive bomb. You know, the Joker who exists in this universe, who's clearly existed in it for some time, like how's he been a secret?
Starting point is 00:24:21 How have all these characters been a secret for so long? Like 20-odd years as well because it's all Batman, so he's been around at least, well, let's say at least 10. Yeah. Like, I'm on board with Batman being an urban myth. Yeah. But how are they covering up the Joker for 20 years? Yeah, you can, I guess.
Starting point is 00:24:36 I don't know. Because he's never blown up Metropolis. No, he hasn't. No. Maybe that's why people weren't that fussed about it, because it had happened before. Sure, yeah. Again. Here we go again. It's not fussed about it because it had happened before. Sure, yeah. Again.
Starting point is 00:24:47 Here we go again. It's not the clown, it's this guy. Yeah, look, I think when you say Jack Nicholson, I made this comparison in the video I did. Yeah. It's like Jack Nicholson, the shining Jack Nicholson. Right, okay, yeah. Because he even got like some similar lines.
Starting point is 00:25:00 Yeah. The one line that he says is, it's not verbatim, but it's very close to something oh it's like uh in in the shiny he says i'm gonna i'm not gonna kill you but i'm gonna beat you bash your brains out yeah there we go yeah yeah yeah it's a weird movie isn't it a little bit yeah is that why he was cast as the joker originally yes actually there is a story behind that yeah it's not a very long one is this your personal story yes it is so basically the year was whatever year it was yeah i wasn't born great but no uh basically uh one of the producers or writers or whatever took a picture of jack nicholson from the shining where his face
Starting point is 00:25:36 is through the the wood paneling in the door and drew like joker makeup on it and was like look at that that's the joker so yeah that's my understanding of it and that's where the story ends it's not a good story love this did you a few people have written in about a fan theory and his costumes in batman are very much like his clothes in chinatown i think jack nicholson is just a mishmash of like one performance he did like in the early 60s or whatever and they're like just keep building that just do that forever yeah
Starting point is 00:26:06 that's a really good point sorry somebody wrote in yeah I was going to say somebody wrote in about a theory on who the Joker is oh a lot of people wrote in a lot of people wrote in yeah did you
Starting point is 00:26:15 did you take a look at it yes okay so basically for those people who haven't heard about it we can kind of do you want to break it down yeah it's entirely theoretical
Starting point is 00:26:23 yeah absolutely it is Andrew Dunn was one of the people that sent it in and this comes uh courtesy of dorkly who um i think originally like a reddit post or something oh yes so anyway potential spoilers for the movie that's out next year and this is probably incorrect probably not true it would be kind of weird if it were true so basically the idea is that this version of the joker is the second incarnation and it's jason todd right and do you want to explain jason todd so in the comic books yeah uh we have we've had a series of robins yes dick grayson the original correct he became nightwing correct the second robin jason
Starting point is 00:26:57 todd was killed by the joker he became being killed yeah he definitely became being killed yeah now depending on the, he was either completely killed and then he's resurrected through magic or changes in times and dimension or the Lazarus Pit. It depends on whatever. Or he was never dead in the first place or whatever. It depends on whatever. What continuity we're doing this week.
Starting point is 00:27:18 What continuity it is. Exactly. So the things that point to him being potentially Jason Todd is, first of all, we know Jason Todd or a version of Robin who has died exists in this universe because we saw the Robin suit in Batman v Superman and it's spray painted with, ha-ha Batman, I killed your Robin in your face or whatever it says. Implying that he's beaten to death.
Starting point is 00:27:41 Yeah, Batman sucks. I love rap. Sweet, sweet PT.T. rated graffiti. Absolutely. So basically then, the Joker, the Jared Leto Joker, looks the way he does because the original Joker tortured him and knocked all his teeth out with a crowbar or whatever, which is what happened in the comics,
Starting point is 00:28:02 and basically tattooed all those ridiculous things on him. Sure. Which actually makes sense as to why you would have... So many terrible tattoos. Exactly. And somebody made the suggestion, look, if he's got his teeth knocked out, then that's why the Joker may have wanted to see him smile, so he tattoos a big smiley face on his forearm.
Starting point is 00:28:21 There's a wing on his bicep as well, which could be a robin. Oh, it could be a robin feather. Could be a robin. There's a jester and a skull on his chest, There's like a wing on his bicep as well, which could be a robin. There's a jester and a skull on his chest, which someone said... Some of these are... The bows get longer and longer. It's all very tenuous. And they get more so as they go along.
Starting point is 00:28:37 There's all the ha-ha-has and sometimes young boys laugh. Like Jason Todd, he was a young boy. So it's probably him right that's the exactly yeah that's how it goes so like uh yeah the skull is with the jesters had is like death and being reborn as the joker and the teardrop on his eye looks kind of like a j implying that he's either that he's jason todd but that could be a teardrop or it could just stand for Joker. Because that's his name.
Starting point is 00:29:06 Because that's his name. Yeah. I guess the other thing is the version of Jason Todd that appears in Arkham Knight also has a J burnt into his face in that exact position. And look, that's probably just a coincidence. I mean, it's just a design choice. But there's also the letter in there's
Starting point is 00:29:26 a lot of stuff that you know a lot of tenuous links i'm bringing here we go let's bring it all together there's a letter solve this mystery the letter that uh the batman gets in the batman v superman trailer says you let your family die right people are saying how could the joker have sent that because that would mean that he knows who bruce wayne is maybe it's the red hood which maybe if it's not the red hood it could be the version of the joker who is jason todd okay the other thing is and i think i'm not sure if this was in the article maybe bruce wayne for like the last 30 years of his life has just had like just a heckler just just mail him stuff and he's implying that it's his mom and dad like you let your family like he's had he's receivedlying that it's his mum and dad. Like, you let your family...
Starting point is 00:30:05 Like, he's received this weird hate mail every day for 30 years. And every time he's like... I was a small child! Why are you not getting this? Yeah, the other thing is, Robin has taken on the Joker's identity before. Have you ever seen the... Oh, the Batman Beyond.
Starting point is 00:30:24 Batman Beyond story. Return ofman beyond story return of the joke return the joke spoiler spoiler alert for that as well tim drake is tortured by the joker and turned into the joker yeah but he then ends up instead of killing batman he he doesn't then the i think he kills the real joker but then later in the future it's revealed that tim drake had like a microchip or something put in him that transforms him into the Joker. So the Joker's still alive. So there is valid precedent for this, yes. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:30:54 Also, in The Dark Knight Strikes Again, that comic that everybody hates because it's not very good. The villain, or one of the villains in that, is also the Joker, but's Dick Grayson, who's had some kind of weird surgery. He's got weird nanotech and he can't die. You're right, they've all been the Joker at this point. So, look, it's probably not, but it's interesting. Yeah. Is it interesting? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:22 That was really, with these headphones, that really hurt. That's why I don't wear them, because I know what I'm going to do. Who knows what I'm going to do? That's what I know what I'm going to do. True that. All right. Anything else on that? No.
Starting point is 00:31:37 Yay or nay? The theory. How about this? If it turned out to be true, would you hate it? No. Me neither. Because it's a new continuity. And also, I'd want to know what happened to the old Joker.
Starting point is 00:31:53 Is he still knocking about? Yeah, yeah. Was he killed? What's his deal? Who's he sending letters to? Which is weird because when it was revealed that the Mandarin was not real in Iron Man 3, I got real mad. Yeah, but that's...
Starting point is 00:32:04 I don't know. I think the reason maybe you got mad because of that is because that wasn't that guy was never the Mandarin in terms of
Starting point is 00:32:11 he wasn't really sinister he was just like a joke he was just an idiot yeah exactly that's true so even though this wasn't the original Joker he's still a dangerous
Starting point is 00:32:18 lunatic clearly yeah good point also I should mention this but then why would see I you know why I'm not going to buy it though
Starting point is 00:32:24 is because he's clearly got this relationship with Harley. Okay. And I don't think you can put that on another character. I think it has to be the original Joker. Maybe. Or maybe that's the reason. Maybe she doesn't like him. No, but there's a flashback scene where...
Starting point is 00:32:41 From what I can tell of the timeline, there's a flashback sequence oh yeah where it's the joker in his fancy joker car okay he's being chased by batman yeah and then we see harley quinn as harleen quinzel yeah like prior to her being transformed into harley quinn okay so i and that's that's the jared leto joker yeah yeah so there can't be a romance there can't be that weird bit where you know he makes her turn into har turn into Harley Quinn and it's not the original Joker. That's a really good point. I think it has to be the original Joker.
Starting point is 00:33:10 You just broke that theory enough. Yeah, I did. That's right. Snap. Snappity snap. Unless he had surgery to look exactly like another person. Oh, really good point. Which is entirely impossible.
Starting point is 00:33:21 Yeah. I think. Maybe it's harsh. Harsh. Yeah, they should do harsh hey yeah also there's actually a batman comic coming out or it might already be no there's no more batman comics oh really yeah yeah because everyone hates batman right sick of him uh where the joke not the joker batman sits on some kind of god throne and he asks questions like who killed my parents and he's like yep joe chill got it and then he goes who's the joker and then you don't hear who what the chair says oh sure but he goes something like that's not possible and then he's like huh and then he gets off the chair so maybe it is someone
Starting point is 00:33:55 he knows and loves or someone he knows and hates or just somebody he knows moving on somebody doesn't know maybe it's no one he doesn't know maybe it's everyone he knows is the joker broke that theory you did uh do you want to go spoilers and then no spoilers for ant man let's talk about ant man because you say spoilers then no spoilers that's actually what i've written here that's weird actually says spoilers and no spoilers great i'm gonna'm going to correct that even though I don't need to because no one else is ever going to read this other than me. No, I do that. I'm very careful with my handwriting in like a notebook.
Starting point is 00:34:32 I won't do any weird, you know, I'll make sure it all fits on the line. Just in case somebody's looking through my stuff. What are you writing in a notebook? What are you doing there? Do you have like a dream journal or something? It's my dream journal. Exactly. Yeah. Potential theories as to who the joker is and one everyone two jason

Okay, so we're going to do non-spoilers people panicked out there yeah they're like i haven't seen it yet why would he spoiler first well maybe no maybe a lot of people haven't seen it because this is going to do less than predicted the opening weekend listen they thought 65 million it's going to do about 55 to 60 so i mean it's up against minions and whatever oh sure um i honestly thought it would do better than that. I mean, considering Guardians of the Galaxy.
Starting point is 00:36:30 Right, it was an unknown quantity. And then it did really well. Yeah. And that had a raccoon in it. Sure. And a tree. And a tree. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:36:38 But this one's got. It was like bloody grass growing. Literally. It was a tree. Yeah. And there was a lot of action. It was in space yeah it was amazing yeah so not like that really not really yeah uh and you know it's got paul
Starting point is 00:36:51 rudd and michael douglas and it's a marvel property so i mean that's still good what am i talking about if it does do that that's the second lowest marvel opening though behind the incredible hulk so there you go anyway let's kick off with things that aren't spoilers. Okay. I've got a letter to start. I'm ready. Or do you want to say something else? I've got something to say.
Starting point is 00:37:13 Could you read the letter, please? Hi, Mason and Nick. Long time listener, second time e-mailer. Just all right, man. I loved it. It was a little slow at the beginning, but it picked up at the end. All in all, best movie ever. However, it seems like there is so little hype slash excitement for this movie.
Starting point is 00:37:27 It was even a struggle to get people to go see it with me because they said it looked stupid. Do you think that Ant-Man is able to relate to a wide audience? If this movie does poorly, what do you think his role will be in the MCU? Let's talk about it. Thanks, guys. Love the show. From Tom. Let's talk about it.
Starting point is 00:37:41 Yeah. All right. We might be covering some old ground here, but let's talk about it. Trailer we might be covering some old ground here but let's talk about it trailer yep not impressed with it yeah you weren't a fan not at all it looked like the the more and more trailers i saw of it the more and more it looked like a very generic sure just marvel movie okay yeah just here's the formula he needs an origin story he needs to be you know kind of a down on his luck guy and then he meets and there's some there's some meets and then he gets the technology and then he gets the powers and then there's a villain
Starting point is 00:38:11 who goes crazy for no reason and then he beats the villain and that's the end well that that's pretty much what happens yeah yeah but what did you think though were you impressed by it i liked it yep i don't know if i loved it yep Yep. I'm in the same camp as you. A lot of people have said this is one of their favourite Marvel movies, even solo movies. Huh. Like Better Than Iron Man or Winter Soldier. Wow.
Starting point is 00:38:36 I don't think that's... That's not right, is it? That's not right. What's wrong with the people you're talking to? Were you talking to them in a crazy house? I was in a crazy house. Were they taking crazy pills? They were taking crazy pills. were they on the crazy train there was no train but there was a lot of toot tooting so probably because they were crazy that's what
Starting point is 00:38:52 i'm saying yeah yeah yeah all right uh well why don't we uh break it break it down in terms of plot okay what do you think it was the plot what do i think the plot was wow you've really... We've raised the bar for movie reviewing at this point, I think. If you can isolate that, and we can use that as a grab for next time, the next time
Starting point is 00:39:16 we review a movie, it's just you going, what do you think of the plot? It's pretty odd, Dave. Yeah, it's true. Okay, so we've got Michael Douglas, who was formerly the superhero called Ant-Man. Correct. He hid his technology away.
Starting point is 00:39:32 Yeah. And now Darren Cross. Darren Cross, right? Darren. Is it Darren or Darren? I think it's Darren. It's not a real name, is it? No.
Starting point is 00:39:40 Anyway, Darren Cross. Yeah. His protege. Yeah. He's Tony Stark's protege, but reversed because it's Oba Dice. Anyway, so he's building his own Ant-Man-style technology, and he's going to use it to destroy the world, probably.
Starting point is 00:39:56 So Michael Douglas, Hank Pym, has to get Scott Lang- A new Ant-Man. Recruit the new Ant-Man. To do a heist. To do a heist. To steal the technology. Which, you know, I love. I love a heist.. To do a heist. To do a heist. To steal the technology. Which, you know, I love. I love a heist.
Starting point is 00:40:07 You love a fun heist. Yeah. Or just a heist. Just a heist. We'll talk about it in a minute. Do you like the movie Heat? No, it's no good. I agree.
Starting point is 00:40:14 A lot of people like Heat. It's no good. The heist isn't as good as people say it is. No. It's a van and then running and using machine guns. Yeah, they just run and then they get the money and then the cops are there and their plan is just to shoot all the cops. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:40:25 Bad, bad time. That's not a heist. That's a robbery. It's a robbery, exactly. Yeah, so Scott Lang is a... Thank you for saying that. So I'm just really... It's fine.
Starting point is 00:40:34 Scott Lang is a burglar. And there's the De Niro Pacino scene that they're talking up. Yeah. But it's rubbish. It's rubbish, yeah. Because that was the first time they'd appeared on screen together.
Starting point is 00:40:43 They'd been just... Anyway, whatever. It's just not that good. No. Anyway, the plot, I feel, is completely paint-by-numbers in this film. Sure. Yeah. Excellent.
Starting point is 00:40:51 Any further thoughts on that? Yeah, look, it's... You know what? The humour kind of moves it along. It's brisk enough. What did you think of the humour, actually, in the story? Nothing... Nothing fell flat,
Starting point is 00:41:05 which is often a day with this sort of thing. Sure. Um, did you have any laugh out loud moments? I generally don't laugh out loud. Not even why. Yeah. Unless I'm kind of in a group and then you're kind of like,
Starting point is 00:41:16 I'm sure. I got that one. Ha ha. That's a funny reference to something that I know about. Ha ha. Yeah. Very rarely. Um, pretty solid. okay yeah fair enough did you enjoy that the michael pena character yes he was less see whenever we get this we get it whenever we get a movie like this we do get some we get some wacky
Starting point is 00:41:37 miscellaneous wacky crew yeah and they didn't annoy me which is great okay yeah yeah yeah i thought maybe he wouldn't because from the TV spots that I'd saw, I'm like, yeah, I don't know about that. But no, I really enjoyed him. I thought he was quite whimsical and amusing. But speaking of the cast, Paul Rudd was Ant-Man, one of. What did you think of his face and personality? I don't think they gave him enough room to Paul Rudd it up.
Starting point is 00:42:02 He felt like, I felt he was pretty decent. There were places where I would have... There were places where it's clearly there's going to be the end to a scene and it's going to end on a joke. You know it's going to end on a joke because it's that kind of... We're at that beat of the Marvel movie where a scene's going to end on a joke.
Starting point is 00:42:19 And I expected a big thing from a Paul Rudd. I expected him to Paul Rudd a little. But he was bloody Rudderless, wasn't he? expected a big thing from a paul rudd yeah i'm expecting for paul rudd a little yeah and but he was bloody rudderless wasn't he was just a bit of but he just he wasn't having a ruddy good time thank you but he just like it just ended on it oh that was fun like i've yeah he's good and i like him but you could have put anyone in that role okay sure really okay so i thought he was really well suited but i i agree i think you should have given him more kind of room to yeah like and already probably i'm glad he's in it yeah that's probably a bit harsh saying anybody can do that role yeah
Starting point is 00:42:52 i don't i don't believe that to be true yeah but what they were talking there was rumors of simon pig i think we've been talking about on this show oh yeah yeah what do you think about that also good but what i what i think I mean is there's not... Paul Rudd's got a lot of great timing and comedic chops and improv chops and stuff like that. Why not take more advantage of it? Absolutely. You've got a really funny guy delivering some just regular funny lines.
Starting point is 00:43:16 Yep, I completely agree. I'd agree with that. What about Michael Duglay? He's French. Is he? He's not. No, he's not. You're right.
Starting point is 00:43:23 Good, I liked him. He's all American. Yeah. Can we talk about... I think we'll have to do that in spoilers. We'll. No, he's not. You're right. Good. I liked him. He's all American. Yeah. Can we talk about... I think we'll have to do that in spoilers. We'll have to do it in spoilers. Okay, right. Okay, cool.
Starting point is 00:43:30 I know what you're about. But what did you think of him as the Hank Pym character? A lot of people were like, why isn't Hank Pym the main guy and he's young and whatever? Why are they... I like the idea of this legacy. Me too. I like the idea that he was a proto-Shield, he was a superhero operative prior to this current crop
Starting point is 00:43:50 of superheroes existing. I like that callback to this past that we haven't really seen yet. Like in the comic book Marvel universe, there's the 1940s with Captain America and the original Human Torch and Sub-Mariner and all that sort of stuff. We've got the modern era, and then it's got this big blank in the middle, and they intermittently fill it in with stuff.
Starting point is 00:44:12 And I always think that's kind of interesting, and I'm glad that they're doing it with this. We've got Captain America, World War II, we've got Agent Carter, then we've got the current day Marvel Universe, and we've got some space to fill in. And I would like to see some more stuff put in there i completely agree yeah apparently they're thinking about doing an ant-man prequel with michael douglas that really yeah i
Starting point is 00:44:32 would love that i read that i was gonna mention that a couple weeks ago but then i didn't and i and yes that'd be michael douglas doing prequel stuff in the 60s we'll talk about how they would might do that yeah let's talk about how they might do that, yes. What about Evangeline Lilly? Pretty good. Didn't recognize her as Evangeline Lilly. Hair? Without the hair, yeah, exactly, yeah.
Starting point is 00:44:52 Because she's got the severe bob going on. That's the bloody Hope Van Dyne, mate. Yeah, it is. No, the Janet Van Dyne. It is the Janet Van Dyne, yeah. The different Van Dynes. Michael Peña, we talked about. Yeah, she was good, sorry.
Starting point is 00:45:03 Yeah, she was, yeah. She looked fierce enough enough didn't she she'd punch a man in the face she'd punch a man right in the face yeah yeah I liked her reasoning she was you know her motivation seemed
Starting point is 00:45:12 she's a little bit dim as to why her father wanted her to do certain things or not do certain things which we can talk about in spoilers I'm going to write that down I'm going to write dim
Starting point is 00:45:23 that's okay Corey Stoll I'm going to write that down. I'm going to write dim. That's okay. Corey Stoll as the Yellow Jacket, the man with a plan to destroy the world or whatever, or to sell technology or shrink technology. He was killing all sorts of sheep. He's not very threatening. Because he's just like mad?
Starting point is 00:45:50 No, but he was just kind of tall and gangly. Okay. He's kind of tall and gangly and they put him in like a very sharp suit. Yep. And he's very, like he's big. Yeah. But he'd get up in people's face and be like, I'm going to take everything you like and I'm going to bloody shit on it.
Starting point is 00:46:02 Like he did a bit of that. I guess so, yeah. But no, he just, he seemed too goofy to be threatening to me. Like, I reckon I could take him. Okay. I'd go in low. Ant-Man style. Yeah, exactly. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:46:15 Sweep him out of the legs. Sweep him, exactly. Go right down. Okay. Long way to fall. Fair enough. On your bloody egg noggin. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:46:22 Do you think they missed a trick with making him the villain egghead yes or egg foo or egg for sure which is i think egg foo's dc indeed yes yeah yeah look and do he kind of he goes crazy which happens in a lot of these movies yes that is the class look that's the problem with a lot of marvel movies there's's a weak villain. Yeah. And yeah, there is, again, this is, this movie is essentially Iron Man,
Starting point is 00:46:51 the first Iron Man. And comes with that is a villain that goes crazy for no reason. Now I'm, I know you're going to say that there is a reason. There still is no reason. Once you explain that reason, there's still going to be no reason. We'll talk about it.
Starting point is 00:47:03 I'll explain that. How about that? after these messages yes anyway yeah yeah yeah yeah weak villain that's the guy's yep yeah even though I feel like these motivations like he had a reason for doing what he did yes he's it's still a weak villain. Yeah, absolutely. Yeah. Character stuff. Interactions between different people.
Starting point is 00:47:28 How was that? You had all sorts of relationships forming, friendships made, bonds broken and reformed. Was any of that true? Oh, did it feel true? Yes. Did it feel real in my heart? Yeah. Oh. No, just like superficially, I feel.
Starting point is 00:47:46 Oh, in your face. Yeah, man. That's right. In your face, all the actors. That's the thing about this. I feel like a lot of it, it all works and it's all competent. Yeah. But it's not anything beyond that.
Starting point is 00:47:57 Like, it's fun and it's brisk and I enjoyed it. Yeah. But I can't help but think Edgar Wright would have done something much better with this. People are sick of us saying this. I know. I know. And look, and I even said that that's probably the way I'm going to feel. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:48:12 And look, we're never going to get that version. That's fine. Whatever. It fits in well with the universe. But I'm just saying Edgar Wright makes things that are up here. Yes. And this is like middling. Right.
Starting point is 00:48:25 Yeah. That's what I'm saying. makes things that are up here and this is like middling. Right, yeah. That's what I'm saying. I also felt there was kind of some scenes that were quite jarringly obvious that Edgar Wright had written these first. Yeah. And he'd been like, okay, we're going to have this set piece and this set piece and this set piece. Yeah. And now I'll write the rest of it.
Starting point is 00:48:38 And they're like, no, do it this way. And he's out. Yeah. And then all of a sudden they had to fill in with just some more generic stuff. Well, we'll talk about him. Yeah. Well, the director came in two months and he's out. Yeah. And then all of a sudden I had to fill in with just the more generic stuff. Well, we'll talk about him. Yeah. Well, the director came in two months before they started filming. Right.
Starting point is 00:48:50 So, yeah, you're probably right. I think this was all, I think all the ducks were lined up. Oh, yes. And all the ducks were in a row as it were. Is that the expression? It's not important. I'm just going to write which is which. That will remind me to talk about the Edgar Wright thing after
Starting point is 00:49:04 because I'll forget. Get your notepad. Write it in your notepad as well. This is going to take me a really long time. I have to find the correct scale. Yeah. Action scenes. Good.
Starting point is 00:49:19 That's all you're getting. No, I think solid and some very good use of the shrinking mechanic. I completely agree. I was a bit worried about where they were going to go with it. I thought good use of the shrinking mechanic I completely agree I was a bit worried about where they were going to go with it I thought maybe some of the action
Starting point is 00:49:28 would be a bit pedestrian but pretty good I agree there's a I feel like this is kind of up there maybe not up there
Starting point is 00:49:35 but it's like it's almost as exciting as seeing Spider-Man swing or Iron Man fly or Captain America throw his shield I'm not saying it's necessarily as good
Starting point is 00:49:43 as any of those things but I feel like it fits in that universe and it's unique. It's not just a man just in a gunfight. Do you know what I mean? Sure, yeah, totally. Yeah, so I definitely enjoyed that. Oh, I thought you had... No, I'm writing a note for later.
Starting point is 00:49:56 Okay. This is just us killing time while we remember things we're going to say in the spoiler part. Correct. So, yeah, so in terms of special effects, you were impressed or the spectacle of it. Yes. Did you see 3D or 2D or 1D?
Starting point is 00:50:10 2D. Good. Not seeing it in 3D. I'm done with 3D. Well, I saw it in 3D on the IMAX. Oh, yes. On the big IMAX. I think the 3D may have actually enhanced some moments.
Starting point is 00:50:21 I don't believe you. Yeah, you're right. Keep lying to yourself. Well, there's some depth kind of things't believe you. Yeah, you're right. Keep lying to yourself. Well, there's some depth kind of things, you know, like when you- No, there isn't. You're right. But let's say hypothetically there is. Okay, sure.
Starting point is 00:50:32 Like when he's in the bath and you just see the length of the bath and everything's kind of blurry in the background. Like, I'm not saying it enhances it. I should say it didn't hurt it. Okay, sure. Which it often does, which is more likely. By it, you mean your brain and eyes. Correct. It didn't hurt your brain hurt it. Okay, sure. Which it often does, which is more likely. By it, you mean your brain and eyes. Correct.
Starting point is 00:50:46 It didn't hurt your brain and eyes. Yeah, yeah. No, I liked all the action sequences, as opposed to a lot of the Marvel movies that end with a big thing. Like this ends with a really small, low-key battle that feels big. Yeah. But it's... Scale's going all over the place.
Starting point is 00:51:02 Isn't it just? Yeah, I think after Age of Ultron, I'm a little bit worn out of... Bring it down a notch. Yeah, bring it down a notch. A massive, everything's exploding, everything's going to destroy the world. Yeah, sure. Absolutely. Did you like the shrinking effect?
Starting point is 00:51:16 Yeah, but it wasn't that much to it, really. I mean, it just got smaller, didn't it? It just got smaller, yeah, exactly. How far can you go with the shrinking effect? About this far, about this high. Oh, I see. That's the smaller it gets. You i see you make a little little small gesture making a little small gesture i've got here funny question mark but we talked about that we said yes it's as see it's as funny as a regular marvel movie i don't think it's as funny as guardians yeah okay fair enough see i
Starting point is 00:51:40 think guardians had had the advantage of it got real James Gunny. Yes. Do you know what I mean? Yeah, yeah. And this didn't get enough Edgar Wright-y. Exactly. To stand out the way that Guardians did. It's interesting that, yeah, that they went, okay.
Starting point is 00:51:55 Because I feel that, like, the tone was set by maybe Iron Man. Yeah. But that was very Robert Downey Jr-y. Yeah. And to some extent John Favreau-y. So why can't the other ones, why did they all have to follow that tone? Why can't they all take the- I agree.
Starting point is 00:52:12 Yeah. I completely agree. Why can't they all take the tone of the director or the star or whatever? Yeah. Yeah. Look, I think it was competently directed. Yeah. But yeah.
Starting point is 00:52:22 I mean, it's hard to come in on a project two months prior and then pull this off. Yeah. Like, it's a miracle that it's as good as it is. Sure, exactly. So, yeah. Should we get into spoilers? Let's get into spoilers.
Starting point is 00:52:32 Actually, I've got here a funny question mark. You mentioned that. We literally just did that. No, Best Movie Ever. Yeah, I liked it. I have to go with Best Movie Ever. I liked it. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:52:40 Certainly wasn't the worst movie ever. Certainly not. That's The Expendables 3. Yeah. Or Entourage. You know what? the worst movie ever. Certainly not. That's The Expendables 3. Yeah. Or Entourage. You know what? It's Entourage. It is.
Starting point is 00:52:48 But Entourage at least was entertainingly bad. Yeah, it was a car crash of a film. It was boring. It was a really expensive car. Entourage was a really expensive car with doors that opened backwards car crash of a film. It sure was. Spoilers. Okay, here we go.
Starting point is 00:53:04 Or we could call it what's our famous spoiler section hey remember that bit when this happened yeah exactly there you go what's a bit that you thought
Starting point is 00:53:11 was good okay here's the here's what we one of the things I wanted to talk about is that this is the witch's witch that I wrote down right
Starting point is 00:53:18 like which is the Edgar Wright which is the oh yeah let's talk about that oh really what's the other thing no I was going to say we were talking about weak villains before. Okay, go.
Starting point is 00:53:27 So the thing about it in this movie is because in Iron Man, Obadiah Stane goes crazy for no reason, right? He's a normal businessman. He's got some shady business practices. He's got some links to terrorism. Sure, but he'll also bring you a pizza. He'll bring you a pizza,
Starting point is 00:53:43 but then at the end, instead of locking Tony stark out of the business and then making millions on this battle suit or whatever he's just like i'm gonna steal your technology just get in on ironmonger suit i kill everybody whatever like don't do that he'll kill a family of four in a car just go and lawyer up and then just engage in a prolonged legal battle with Iron Man, with Tony Stark. It's not going to... But in this one, again, Cross goes mad for no reason. And you're going to say he didn't go mad for no reason.
Starting point is 00:54:15 Yeah. Because the pin particles... Exposure to the pin particles. Exposure to the pin particles made him go insane over time because that is what happened to Hank Pym apparently. Sure, sure. Pym Particles made him go insane over time because that is what happened to Hank Pym apparently. Sure. But the thing of it is, is that why would he go insane? Why did none of his other researchers go insane? Like he's got a lot of other, there's a lot of lab techs. Why did none of them go?
Starting point is 00:54:36 He spent most of the time behind a pane of glass. Yeah, you know what? He seems like a quite normal guy. Yeah. Up until this, like the couple of days span of this movie where he goes properly insane, right? Yeah. But also, I guess these pin particles,
Starting point is 00:54:50 I can't explain why the other people didn't go crazy. I guess maybe he's more hands-on than we led to believe. I thought you were going to say more handsome. He's more handsome. That's definitely not true. Yeah. Big gangly egg man. I know, right?
Starting point is 00:55:01 He's not a bad-looking guy. He's better-looking than both of us. But here's the thing about the... We keep going back to Iron Man because it's the same movie. But in Iron Man, Obadiah Stane cannot miniaturise the arc reactor technology. So he literally steals it out of Tony Stark's chest and leaves him to die. In this movie, Cross hears about these rum of this Ant-Man, this technology that can shrink a man and then he can be a superhero or soldier or whatever.
Starting point is 00:55:32 And then he goes, that's really interesting. I'll build that. And he does it completely on his own. He doesn't steal Hank Pym's technology. No, you're right. He just goes in and he uses his own scientific genius to build his own technology. And then Hank Pym's like, hey, he's done a thing that I did. Steal it and then destroy it and then destroy his whole business.
Starting point is 00:55:53 Do that, Scott Lang. Why don't you do that? It's like if you went, oh, I built this missile and it was really dangerous, so I hid it away. But then somebody I know built a similar missile. You should blow it up and destroy it. No, it's none of your business. You're right.
Starting point is 00:56:11 That's a really good point. Get away from it. Unless it was built off the back of some, maybe he did give him some tech, but didn't give him. That being said though, if you went mad because you were exposed to Pym Particles and then you knew somebody who was working on Pym Particles, even if you didn't want him to develop the technology,
Starting point is 00:56:32 surely he'd go, hey, I don't know nothing about this shrinking stuff, but you might want to wear some protective gear while you're working on it because it might be dangerous, wink. Yeah. But he didn't. Don't breathe it in.
Starting point is 00:56:45 Yeah. Well, I guess also they were different Pym particles because they were yellow. Oh, they were yellow and not red. He'd used a different food dye in his. Yeah, I guess that's true, yeah. Yeah. He used cornstarch, not red cordial.
Starting point is 00:56:54 Yeah. No, all of those are valid points. Yeah. Weak. Weak. It's weak. It's weak sauce. No, fair enough.
Starting point is 00:57:04 Yeah. So, yeah. Yeah, okay. I agree, yeah so yeah yeah okay i agree i guess which is which okay which is which here we go i'm ready okay uh top of the top of my head the scene where uh yellow jacket and ant-man are fighting in the helicopter they both shrink down they fall into a briefcase yeah briefcase falls out of the helicopter and then they're fighting in the briefcase yes and the music yeah and then they're fighting in the briefcase. Yes, and the music. Yeah, and then he's like,
Starting point is 00:57:27 I'll disintegrate you and then the Cure album plays. That's Edgar Wright. That's Edgar Wright all over the place. I completely agree. On the flip side of that, I think the scene where he fights the Falcon was forced in.
Starting point is 00:57:39 That's Peyton Reed. That being said, I liked that scene. Me too. That was maybe my favourite action scene. Yeah. I thought it was really funny and really clever. Yeah. And it's a guy, they didn't, it wasn't overly one-sided.
Starting point is 00:57:51 Yeah. And it wasn't, you know, it was a guy with a lot of training. Yeah. Who's a fully-fledged superhero. Yeah. Wow. Yeah. Versus a guy, he's a soldier or whatever,
Starting point is 00:58:03 versus a guy who has this new technology that the Falcon doesn't. Yeah. Like he's never seen it before. Yeah. And he's sort of doing the best he can versus this untrained idiot who clearly thinks outside the box a little bit. Yeah. Like it wasn't completely, like neither of them got flattened.
Starting point is 00:58:17 No. You know how there's the kind of the, in comic books, like if you want to introduce like a badass character who's real cool and tough. Yeah. You have him fight Wolverine and win. Yeah, yeah. That's the thing. So it wasn't just you introduce Ant-Man
Starting point is 00:58:30 and he flattens the Falcon and that's it. Yeah. Like it was clearly... Because then it would be like, why is the Falcon in the team? Exactly, yeah. So, yeah.
Starting point is 00:58:36 Exactly. You're right. Yeah. But I did like a lot in the scene where he shrunk down and he's like, okay, I'm real small. He can't see me.
Starting point is 00:58:43 And Falcon's like, I can see you. That was good. Does that mean you can hear him as well, okay, I'm real small. He can't see me. And Falcon's like, I can see you. That was good. Does that mean he can hear him as well? Maybe. I don't know. So does his goggles do that in the comics? They must.
Starting point is 00:58:55 I don't even know if he has. Like he's got a mask in the comics. Yeah, you're right. I haven't read anything with a Falcon in it in a long time. I think he's just got regular eyesight. Regular eyesight. Yeah. Good for him.
Starting point is 00:59:04 Yeah, cool fight scene. I think he's just got just regular eyesight. Regular eyesight. Yeah. Good for him. Yeah, cool fight scene. Thought that was cool. I think, and it didn't overshadow it by putting in like a Captain America. Well, he is in it later, but like,
Starting point is 00:59:11 he's a lesser known Avenger. Yeah. I think you could have used him. You could have used, I'm trying to think, you could have used maybe a Black Widow or a Rhodey or a... I don't think you could have used
Starting point is 00:59:18 Black Widow. No? No. Because she would have beat him up. Scarlet Witch maybe? Yeah, okay. Yep, yep, yep. Vision you couldn't
Starting point is 00:59:24 because he would have, I don't know, atomized him or whatever. Yeah., maybe? Yeah, okay. Yep, yep, yep. Vision, you couldn't because he would have, I don't know, atomized him or whatever. Yeah. Yeah. Good point. I'm trying to think. Who else is there?
Starting point is 00:59:30 I don't know. Quicksilver's dead. Doesn't matter, does it? Yeah. You couldn't use War Machine because he's an armored villain and he has to fight Yellowjacket later. Oh, okay. So you couldn't have him fight another armored character.
Starting point is 00:59:44 Because the battle between Ant-Man and Yellowjacket has to be self-contained. Yeah. So if he learned how to defeat Yellowjacket based on fighting War Machine, it wouldn't work. Yeah, you're right. He learned how to beat Yellowjacket by listening to a story that he once heard.
Starting point is 01:00:00 Correct, he did. That's right. That's how you do it in the comics. What did you think of the flashback stuff? I liked it. Me too. Hayley Atley atwell yeah great even in the 80s even in the 80s so good she would have been like 70 odd probably like 60s yeah still got it yeah as a woman who's pretty hot and really hot in real life with some aged makeup let's talk about it the michael douglas de-agifying I thought it was great I thought it was amazing
Starting point is 01:00:27 right it's the best I've seen they've done it they've finally done it because we had it in Terminator Salvation it's pretty good pretty good
Starting point is 01:00:33 we had it in Terminator the last no wait Terminator Salvation's terrible yeah Terminator Genesis not bad
Starting point is 01:00:41 not bad pretty solid X-Men 3 weird and waxy garbage Tron Legacy I liked it but you thought it should have been Terminator Genisys. Not bad. Not bad. Pretty solid. X-Men 3. Weird and waxy. Garbage. Tron Legacy. I liked it, but you thought it should have been more CGI-y.
Starting point is 01:00:54 Because, no, I think they should have explained it that way. I think they should have explained around it how it's not exactly Jeff Bridges. Okay. But this, it's done really well. Looks like young Michael Douglas. It's bloody dead on. It's bloody Disclosure Era. I can't think of another. The game era.
Starting point is 01:01:07 I think that's mid-90s. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Although I did notice, I think you can sort of see the anchor points. Yeah. Where they've scanned his face and gone, okay, well, you need the cheek here, cheek here, mouth, whatever. You can see them moving and everything else follows slightly up. Sure, yeah, I'd agree with that.
Starting point is 01:01:23 So it's a little bit creepy. Yeah, it's not... Okay follows slightly. Sure. Yeah. I'd agree with that. It's a little bit creepy. Yeah. It's not. Okay. We said perfect. Yeah. But it's, it's almost as good as we're going to get.
Starting point is 01:01:31 I feel. No, I think they'll get to the point where you won't be able to tell. Okay. Yeah. Then again, did you say the winter soldier with, well,
Starting point is 01:01:37 you did say, I know you've seen it with Haley Atwell, where they make her super old. Oh yes. That's pretty bloody good as well. Yeah, but old is easy. Take that. That's all you have to old. Oh, yes. That's pretty bloody good as well. Yeah, but old is easy. Take that.
Starting point is 01:01:45 Just wait. That's all you have to do, ultimately. Yeah, good point. Yeah, he looked great, though. Yeah, he did. Do you think, we were talking about prequels, do you think you could watch that for two hours? Absolutely, I could.
Starting point is 01:01:58 Huh, okay. The young Ant-Man, Michael Douglas, like mid-80s or whatever, running about, definitely. I would love to see that. They're not going to do it. I'd be Michael Douglas. Yep. Like mid-80s or whatever, running about. Definitely. Okay. I would love to see that. They're not going to do it. I'd be very surprised. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:02:08 But no, it was sweet as. Yeah, it was good. I'm glad we finally come to a consensus on weird CGI de-agifying. I've got an email here. I was going to leave it to the end. It's from Keegan. Am I the only one who's annoyed at how Marvel keeps switching their actor for Howard Stark? First, it was the guy from Iron Man 2.
Starting point is 01:02:27 Then it was the guy from Captain America who looks and sounds and acts totally different, by the way. And now they go back to this guy. What the hell, Marvel? Pick a Howard and stick to him. This is the guy from Mad Men, right? This is John Slattery. Yeah, so I like John Slattery. It's fine.
Starting point is 01:02:41 But you're right. They're completely different. They are completely different. They are completely different. Like the Iron Man 2 and this guy, he's a very serious family man and he's all about the business or whatever. And then in Agent Carter, he's like, Woo! Woo!
Starting point is 01:02:58 I've got a speedboat. I've got a speedboat full of women. I'm throwing hand grenades. Everything I build can kill everyone i don't even care yeah you're right yeah and they look completely different like different shaped head different heights yeah just everything but i guess they kind of they backed themselves into a corner with that didn't they yeah i guess they were well i guess they never expected i didn't they probably didn't expect young Howard Stark
Starting point is 01:03:26 to ever need to come back. No, exactly. It was that one scene in Captain America and then never again. And then, like, well, Agent Carter's out, so we need Howard Stark back. What did you think of the scene where the original Wasp dies?
Starting point is 01:03:38 I thought that was a really cool scene. More of that, mate. Pretty good. Okay, so... I thought it was, it wasn't very, it wasn't very humanizing though. Cause you didn't see her.
Starting point is 01:03:50 We don't see it. She's just in a, in a wasp costume. She's there and she's like, Oh, I'm dying. Boo. I'm gone.
Starting point is 01:03:56 Whatever. Also we're talking about, Oh, he won the battle. Cause he learned, he remembered a story. Yes. There was a little,
Starting point is 01:04:04 it's subatomic. Yeah. There was a, there was story. Yes. There was a little, it's, it's subatomic. Yeah. There was a, there was this weird element. We're talking about how it's inferred that he went crazy because of the Darren cross went crazy because the pin particle, we don't see him go crazy. We don't see him snap at any point or like breathe in over a big vat of
Starting point is 01:04:18 pin particles or whatever. We don't see that. So that's inferred. Yeah. But then there's a bit of hand holding in the fact that Michael Douglas is like oh we couldn't crack the shell because it was made of titanium
Starting point is 01:04:29 so I had to go to subatomic levels or whatever and then at the end battle Yellowjacket's like you can't crack my suit shell it's made of titanium ha ha ha ha ha does he actually say that?
Starting point is 01:04:39 yeah he does he says you can't crack it it's made of titanium and then he's like that's an Edgar Wright line if ever I've heard one yeah boy some just just some last minute exposition He says, you can't crack it, it's made of titanium. And then he's like... That's an Edgar Wright line, if ever I've heard one. Oh, boy.
Starting point is 01:04:50 Just some last minute exposition, just so you know. Yeah, and then he's like, oh, but I remember that story. Yeah, so it was... Yeah, you're right. Weird hand. I didn't like that at all. Yeah, fair enough. Bad. I completely didn't hear that.
Starting point is 01:04:59 But you're right. He should have just done it. Yeah. Yeah, because that would... Yeah. Yeah. Anyway, whatever. Or he could have seen the bloody tech specs of it or Yeah. Yeah. Because that would... Yeah. Yeah. Anyway, whatever. Or he could have seen the bloody tech specs of it or whatever.
Starting point is 01:05:08 Yeah, yeah, yeah. He just made a Titanic. It doesn't matter. Yeah, exactly. All of those things are good points. Did you notice Evangelina Lilly is like, why can't I be the Ant-Man? I'm bloody good at it.
Starting point is 01:05:17 Look at my haircut. Yeah. Or whatever. Uh-huh. And it took Paul Rudd to point out and be like, hey, the reason he doesn't want you to do it because he hates me and doesn't like me. And so if I die, it doesn't matter.
Starting point is 01:05:28 Yeah. Like, surely she would have, like, figured that out. Or he could have said it. Well, he did. Oh, Hank Pym. Yeah. Yeah. He could have said it straight up.
Starting point is 01:05:36 Listen. Yeah, you're right. I like you because you're my daughter. I don't want you to die. But if I get some random idiot and he dies, it doesn't matter. Look at this ex-con. You know, the guy you didn't trust or like? We'll get him to do it.
Starting point is 01:05:46 And then if he dies, who cares? It should have been like, great. Yeah. Because right now I don't like him. I won't make out with him later, as far as I know. So, yeah, just do that. Yeah, you're right. Again, it's one of those.
Starting point is 01:05:58 He could have told her that. Like, why didn't he tell her that that's how her mum died? It's one of those family dramas that could have been solved with a post-it note on the fridge. Exactly, yeah. Passive-aggressive one. Correct. Like, it's, yeah, he could have been solved with a post-it note on the fridge. Exactly, yeah. Passive-aggressive one. Correct. Like, it's...
Starting point is 01:06:07 Yeah, he could have told her that years ago. I mean, because she'd clearly... She'd sided with Darren Cross. And then... Can't be right. And then comes back to her father. And that would have been the point where he's like, Listen, this is how it is.
Starting point is 01:06:21 Or that could have been the reason why she changed her mind or whatever. This plot is very simplistic, but also a mess. Yeah. Yeah. Fair enough. Hey, remember that bit where... Oh, here's the witch's witch. Yep.
Starting point is 01:06:40 The bit where Hank Pym's keychain has a tag on it. I was going to say, that's Edgar Wright, right? That's Edgar Wright all over, except they didn't do anything with it. No. And also, if you drove a tank... As soon as you saw that tank, were you like, that's a small tank? That's a small tank, yeah. Yeah, that's exactly it.
Starting point is 01:06:56 And it's very Edgar Wright that the keychain was still on it. Yeah, that was great, yeah. But they didn't do anything with it. Like, I expected them to charge... Like, it might as well have just been a big boulder. Like, it doesn't matter, because they didn't drive it anywhere. And also, if you drive a tank, if you're in a tank and you drive it off a second-story, like, balcony,
Starting point is 01:07:17 you'll die. Yeah, it will mash you up. The tank will probably survive, maybe. Yeah. But you're in a tank. It's got a lot... If you've ever been in a tank, there's a lot of sharp edges in there. There is a lot of...
Starting point is 01:07:26 They should really smooth those edges. You'd be dead. Yeah. So, I don't know. I'm expected to see a little bit more. Okay, fair enough. Could have been a car. Could have been anything.
Starting point is 01:07:34 Could have been a tank. No. Couldn't have been a tank. Couldn't have been a tank. Couldn't have been a tank, though. What else would he have in that keychain? Also, how's that tank working? Actually, you see it in a flashback.
Starting point is 01:07:42 It's the same... He steals it, yeah. He steals it, yeah. Did you notice a lot of the flashback stuff from when he was that footage was different from the trailer like i'm finding with a lot of these movies now stuff that's in the trailer is not in it like it'll either be like little quips yep or it'll be like i think in the in one of the tv spots he says to the falcon iron man was taken but i don't know if he says that in the movie no he doesn't maybe he does no uh you see I don't know if he says that in the movie. No, he doesn't. Maybe he does. No.
Starting point is 01:08:06 You see him kind of, you know, he does that old mission where he takes out Cuba or something. Right. Where he gets the tank. All of Cuba. Yeah, that's not archival footage. You kind of see him kind of do it a little bit. You know the bit where he's controlling the ants for the first time in the car?
Starting point is 01:08:19 Yeah. In the trailer, and I remember this because I thought, how was he controlling the ants? He's not wearing the helmet. They put the little earpiece on him for the movie yeah so either they cgi'd it out or cgi'd it in for the for one or the other i reckon they cgi'd it out for the trailer yeah because otherwise people would be like why is he wearing a hearing yeah exactly yeah yeah i think you're right um yeah no there's there's some clips kind of there's the scene
Starting point is 01:08:42 where he's like my days of breaking into places and stealing stuff is over. What do you want me to do? He says, break into a place and steal some stuff. And in the movie, in the trailer, he's like, oh, that makes sense. Yeah. But in the movie, they've cut that line out. Okay, yeah, yeah. There's also the bit, he says when he's fighting the Falcon,
Starting point is 01:08:59 like he introduces himself. Yeah. And he's like, I'm Ant-Man. Yeah. In the trailer, he's got the line i know it wasn't my idea yeah that's cut out that's not okay right i can't even remember yeah don't worry it'll all be back in the dvd it will yeah i'm trying to think there's anything else start yourself off i remember that bit where i remember that bit where where he used his shrinker rangs and grower rangs
Starting point is 01:09:22 oh yeah that was a little unclear. Yeah. I felt. What they could do. I'm shooting a lot of this movie down. I had a lot of fun. This is the nitpicking segment, I feel. Sure. It was unclear how many he had. 50.
Starting point is 01:09:34 He did not have 50. He said, I have 50 of these. Did he literally say that? Okay, good. Whew, relief. Or how big they'd make something. Or how big they'd make something. Or how long.
Starting point is 01:09:43 Because at one point he throws the shrinker one at Yellowjacket, who has shrunk for a while, and then he's just fine again. I guess he can... Right, but clearly he's unable to... It makes him unable to grow back to normal size for a while. But at no point does he break it off himself or throw it away and then he's capable of changing back. It's just...
Starting point is 01:10:05 It's a good point. Did he throw a shrinky one or a growy one when he was in that glass container to get out? Must have been a growy one, right? Yeah, I don't know. What did he throw it at? The glass. Oh, either.
Starting point is 01:10:18 Somebody email in, was it a shrinky one or a growy one? I think it was... It was blue. It was blue, yeah. It was blue. He definitely threw a blue one. That was... I was trying to...
Starting point is 01:10:24 I was thinking, which is is that i don't remember like as the movie was going i couldn't remember which one was right which one was uh was which did you like how he shrunk the lamb then he like turned into a weird goo and we shot that guy in the toilet he did shit yeah yeah yeah yeah it's pretty good that okay. Yeah. Do you think he'll play like a massive role in the future considering the post-credits scene? Well, first of all, there's a wasp. Evangeline Lilly's character is going to become the wasp. I like that wasp suit.
Starting point is 01:10:55 I think it's cool. Yeah. But what about the Civil War teaser? The Civil War. Oh, I think he's going to get 10 minutes. There's going to be a lot of people in that movie yeah do you think he'll turn up in like free bucky from the yeah yeah that'll be it that scene is actually lifted directly from civil war i noticed it was a lot grittier yeah boy was it look i liked
Starting point is 01:11:18 it a lot i want more individual individuality in these movies I don't want a bit of personality exactly I don't want cookie cutter Marvel movies like I understand again that they fired Edgar Wright because maybe he wanted to take in a direction that would not have worked and it would have brought down the whole universe or whatever I understand that but if you don't want that don't hire him in the first place but that being
Starting point is 01:11:40 said they did hire him like 2006 so before this was like it's taken any kind of kind of direction but the reason that like civil war and guardians are probably the best phase two movies are because they're very unique visions and they've got their own style winter soldier yes i'm sorry what did i say civil war yeah because they've got their own unique style and and directors and whatever and they're clearly their own thing. Yeah, yeah. And this is that, but at the same time,
Starting point is 01:12:06 it's kind of Iron Man again, but it's not... Well, because Winter Soldier's kind of a heist movie. Winter Soldier's an espionage film. Guardians. Guardians is your space opera. This one's a heist movie. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:12:21 I didn't think it was heisty enough. No, there wasn't. It was one heist. It was one heist. Oh, there's a couple of heists. I think the heist was fine yeah yeah I thought I think it could have been heistier that's all I'm saying also I think that Russian computer hacker guy could have been Peter Serafinowicz I get the sense that if he if he wasn't already a character in Guardians of the Galaxy he was killed yeah would have got him yeah do you want to be a creepy Russian hacker
Starting point is 01:12:38 guy to be like yes absolutely I do he would be. He really would, wouldn't he? He's the best. Yeah. But I think also the reason they let James Gunn run free with Guardians is because Guardians doesn't affect everything else. Yeah, that's true. This does. Yeah. Even though it is a smaller story. Somebody needs something shrunk or unshrunk.
Starting point is 01:12:58 He's your man. Yeah. Yeah. So you're making 10 Minutes in the future. Do you think we'll see a Scott Lang sequel? Sequel? Sequel. Yes.
Starting point is 01:13:10 You know what? We were talking about the interactions between the characters. I would like to see the three main characters again. Okay. Like as a team. I think that would be good. Yeah. Do you think maybe like...
Starting point is 01:13:19 Well, there's a really good comic called... I think it's Ant-Man and the Wasp. And it's Eric O'Grady and Hank Pym, which is pretty solid. Which one's the wasp? Hank Pym. He takes it on because his wife died and he was like, I feel sorry because I hit her at that one time. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:13:35 He really can't escape that. Actually, there's a guy called NerdSync on YouTube. He's really great. He did a video on whether Hank Pym really hit his wife. He did, it turns out. But that panel was initially supposed to be he kind of throws his hands up in kind of despair. Oh, and he hits her by accident.
Starting point is 01:13:48 And he accidentally hits her. But the way he drew it was like, well, I can't really draw this properly like that. So we just had her full on clocking her. And then that has followed him forever. Right, okay. And it's been redrawn a number of times where it's definitely like he's, you know.
Starting point is 01:14:02 Just laid butt on her. Even by accident. Look around when you're flailing your arms in rage. All right? I think that's probably the most, interesting isn't the right word, but that's probably the most defining, one of the most defining things about that character.
Starting point is 01:14:16 Not in a good way, obviously. I mean, he created Ultron, but they can't do that because they did it and Tony Stark did it or whatever. But yeah, that gives him an interesting backstory because he's a terrible person. Yeah. Have we talked about the microverse? Yeah. It's called the quantum realm.
Starting point is 01:14:34 It's called the quantum realm. I think Fox owned the microverse. It's interesting that everybody just rolled with the term quantum in the movie. Nobody's like, what do you mean the quantum realm? Who says realm anymore? So it's another dimension? No, it's just a real shrinky fight is it though because in the comics isn't it also a different dimension or something probably who's to say depends on what week you're reading a comic there's apparently a well the rumor is that the easter egg in there you see eternity in there
Starting point is 01:15:01 oh the embodiment of eternity yeah it's all time and space and everything and whatever. So you can kind of see a shadowy figure of a man. And you hear Michael Douglas. Eternity. Yeah, exactly. Yeah. There's a lot of that. So it's probably him.
Starting point is 01:15:13 Don't mess around with the regulator. Regulator. Regulator. Yeah. The dimension also contains Warren G's regulators. There's some other Easter eggs. They're all pretty good. I did a video on it.
Starting point is 01:15:28 If you want to check it out, Mason, don't. Or do. I won't. I won't. Got some other letters here. Anyway, I was going to say, when we zoom in on the micro... Oh, yeah. Sorry.
Starting point is 01:15:37 I thought we were going to zoom in on a little... It looked like a little garden city, like a garden planet. Okay. But maybe that's... And then it zoomed beyond that like he shrunk beyond that and i thought maybe that's where janet van dyne is just a little garden little garden world but then if it is a shrinky shrinky world how did she get on that exact molecule or whatever it's a good question without to be a different dimension all right fine god
Starting point is 01:15:58 you're saying it is dumb dimensions i didn't invent any of this quantum realms you and your bloody quantum realms how dare you yeah i like. I like the show Quantum Leap. Not true. Never seen it. Anyway, I read Keegan's letter. Oh, yes. I read two other letters we've got. Two more letters.
Starting point is 01:16:10 Preston. I just left the theater after seeing Ant-Man. What a bunch of fancy names we've had this week. I know, right? Preston and Keegan. What a fantastic movie. Really love the fusion of comedy, action, and serious elements and Marvel content we love. It exceeded my expectations quite a bit.
Starting point is 01:16:25 There you go. My expectations were met. Me too. Actually, you know what? They were exceeded because I was expecting it to be balls. Yeah, I was expecting it to be balls. And it was, look, I had a good time. Me too.
Starting point is 01:16:35 I did. Yeah, we have torn it apart, but on the whole, yeah, no, I really, really enjoyed it. Isaiah says. I really enjoyed it. I didn't really, really enjoy it. Okay, settle down there. Isaiah says... I really enjoyed it. I didn't really, really enjoy it. Okay, settle down there. Isaiah says, Hey, James.
Starting point is 01:16:49 Hey, Nick Dickhead Mason. It's a bit harsh. Did you add that in? No, he's written it here. Wow. I mean, maybe I changed it. Maybe you did change it. Who's to say?
Starting point is 01:16:57 I really enjoyed the film. I thought it was pretty solid on most aspects, but I think I know what major parts of the movie were changed that led to Edgar Wright's leaving. Leaving, the obvious being the Falcon fight scene, which was very cool, but pretty slurperfluous. Slurperfluous? It was slurperfluous.
Starting point is 01:17:14 Yeah. Yeah. I guess it didn't really add anything to the story. It showed that he could fight, I guess. It showed that he could fight. It showed we're tied to the larger world, which I guess you have to. I did like that line in it
Starting point is 01:17:26 where Hank Pym's like we've got to stop this guy and Scott Lang's like just call the Avengers yeah why wouldn't you you would do that
Starting point is 01:17:33 in this universe but then he was like fuck those guys yeah those guys I've literally never met that have definitively said
Starting point is 01:17:42 that they have no link to S.H.I.E.L.D. anymore. You know those guys? You know a bit I did like? Yes. Where at the start in the Michael Douglas flashback where he's young, that agent's like, well, maybe if you were more careful, this wouldn't happen to your wife. And he just grabs his head and slams it into the table.
Starting point is 01:17:58 That's what you could do in the 80s. I love it. You could just assault a man who insults your wife in the 80s. Yeah. You can't do that now. That was pretty good. Occupational health and safety. They wouldn't let you do that at S.H.I.E.L.D. wife in the 80s. Yeah. Can't do that now. That was pretty good. Occupation of health and safety. They wouldn't let you do that at Shield.
Starting point is 01:18:08 No, they wouldn't. Yeah. It's all Hydra anyway. It's interesting that Hydra's still around. Yeah. I mean, it always is, isn't it? It's never going to leave. They can't really bring it back though, can they properly?
Starting point is 01:18:18 I read this, but I didn't see it. Apparently, somebody has one of the potential buyers for the Yellow Jackets who has a 10 rings tattoo on his neck. Apparently so. When are we going to see the Mandarin? It's too late, isn't it? We've talked about this before. People will be confused. They'll be like, we saw this.
Starting point is 01:18:37 Who's what? That's going to be- Because that means people have to know about the one shot and have to have seen all the 10 rings Easter eggs. We could see it, but- I'd all the Ten Rings Easter eggs. I don't, like, we could see it, but. I'd buy some Ten Rings Easter eggs. No, but I, that's going to annoy me forever that it's going to be this one. This looming threat.
Starting point is 01:18:54 This unsolved mystery of this Marvel Universe. Because there won't be an Iron Man 4. Unless they offer it like $75 million. You got $80 million for Civil War and Age of Ultron. Wow. Together or each? Together. Oh, right. It's still $40 million each. Yeah. million dollars he got 80 million for civil war and age of ultron wow together or each together oh right it's still 40 million each yeah so if he gets did he get 50 million for you got 50 million
Starting point is 01:19:11 for iron man 3 and i think also for the avengers because i think he also gets a cut oh yeah of the gross wow okay well if they get him if they give him 75 million dollars he might do iron man 4 and then maybe we'll see the real mandarin which we don't that's i can't imagine iron man 4 would do big beast of course it would what am i saying yeah but i have no interest in another iron man movie do you yeah i'll watch another one but you don't like them i like the first one yeah me too yeah i like elements of the other ones yeah and look you know what he's really got that he's really got that suit down pat now. It's pretty great.
Starting point is 01:19:47 I really liked it in Age of Ultron. I want to hear more from Friday. His backup artificial intelligence. I want to see what she's all about, you know? Sure. Yeah. Boring, generic Friday. Now she was Irish or something.
Starting point is 01:19:59 Yeah, she was. Yeah. Great. That makes her unique. Yes. Great. Yeah, I think that's pretty much makes her unique. Yes. Great. Yeah, I think that's pretty much it, though. You can put it in centering mode, the suit.
Starting point is 01:20:10 Yeah, but he can exit it from any direction at this point. How good's that? He can exit from the front or the back. Or the feet. He just stands there. Feet first. Who knows? Like a slivered slide.
Starting point is 01:20:21 Like a slivered slide out of the suit. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. No, he has nailed that. You're right. That's what I'm saying. But then where do you take that?
Starting point is 01:20:28 Because you want to see a new Iron Man suit. I want to see a liquid metal suit. I reckon you can do it. Oh, like... There's a version of that. I can't remember what it's called. It was after Extremis. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 01:20:37 And then he went all primitive suits again. And then him and Reed Richards built like a liquid metal Iron Man suit. Like a goop. Like a goop suit. I want to see an Iron Man goop suit. Would you watch a movie called Iron Man Goop Suit? Yes.
Starting point is 01:20:49 Goop suit. Yeah. It could be called Iron Man colon goop troop. Right? Yes. Yeah. You'd have a team of young Iron Lads and Lasses. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:21:04 Definitely. Each could have their and lasses. Absolutely. Yeah. Definitely. Each could have their own quirky personality. Yes. And their own different AI with its own quirky personality. Just different accents from around the world. Correct. Ukrainian. Yes.
Starting point is 01:21:17 Duh. Just American? Do you want one of them? Or is that too standard? Like a redneck-y one, yeah. Okay, yeah. That makes sense. And a classic New York accent, and they don't get along.
Starting point is 01:21:27 No, they don't. No. What about like a Manuel Fawlty Towers kind of accent? Yes. And he's also incompetent. He's also incompetent, and the suit's always sparking on walls and just flopping back and forth in the air, yeah. Fantastic.
Starting point is 01:21:41 Guys, let's all email Marvel and make this happen. We want stereotypes Iron Man 4 goop troop it's the one for kids it's the daddy day camp of Iron Man movies straight to DVD
Starting point is 01:21:52 no original cast members except for Robert Downey Jr. in a flashback who gets 75 billion dollars wonderful yeah Happy Hogan is in the Iron Man suit.
Starting point is 01:22:05 Absolutely. He's the main guy. It's Favreau. So he's kind of like, is he a babysitter and they all get Iron Man suits? Yes. He's like, oh, no. Yeah. The automated factory system goes haywire.
Starting point is 01:22:16 One of the kids, the nerdiest one, the nerdiest kid he messes it up. The kid from Iron Man 3? Yes. That guy. Done. Yep. And he's playing about with it and he builds them all Iron Man suit and they go on an adventure.
Starting point is 01:22:27 Happy Hogan has to chase them down. Adam Sandler's also in this movie. Good. If I could make a request to our artist in residence. Yes. Where are we? Fergal Quigley. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:22:38 If he could draw that for me. Oh, he does some great stuff, doesn't he? If he could draw Iron Man for Goop Troop, I would appreciate that. What was the one he did last week? The Marvel Fox one. He did us as... Fox executives? Yeah, shady Fox executives slash carnival barkers
Starting point is 01:22:55 trying to trick people into thinking that the Fox booth at San Diego Comic Con was the Marvel booth. And it looks amazing. It's really good. Yeah. He's one of the best. Yep. All right.
Starting point is 01:23:06 You know what it's time for? What's it time for? What are we reading? Oh, what are we going to read? Theme song. This is from, yes. I'm doing the thing. What are we reading today?
Starting point is 01:23:20 This is from Jerome. Hey, Nick and James. I recommend the documentary The Death of Superman Leaves What Happened. It's about the Tim Burton and Nick Cage movie That Never Happened. Great job, guys. Keep up the good work. Love it. I watched it this week.
Starting point is 01:23:33 Yes. It's bloody fantastic. I really, really liked it. Director John Schnepp, he put together this documentary over a couple of years, interviewing a bunch of cast and crew and Lorenzo Di... Bonaventura? Is he the crazy Lorenzo Di... Bonaventura? Is he the crazy... Lorenzo Di Bonaventura.
Starting point is 01:23:48 Who's the dude with the big buffon? John Peters? John Peters. Sorry, I'm not... I think... Did he also... I can't remember. He definitely...
Starting point is 01:23:54 If it's a crazy guy in Hollywood from the 80s, it's John Peters. No, definitely. John Peters is definitely in it. Yeah. But it's fascinating seeing the different takes and they kind of go through the different script, right? It starts with Kevin Smith and it moves to a couple other guys along the way and also Tim Burton who threw out the Kevin Smith version.
Starting point is 01:24:13 And John Peters is – Kevin Smith retells his John Peters story working with him, which is great. And John Peters also has a shot at Kevin Smith where he's like – he's writing his amateur and whatever. There's a bit of back and forth. There's also stories about – Are they in the same room? amazing yeah there's also like stories where john peters would go into like the production offices and like get someone in a headlock yes and then people would be like oh we fucking hate this guy and but then i could cut to john peters and he'd be like yeah you know i used to do stuff like that because it gets it's good
Starting point is 01:24:43 for morale and what so he's just completely oblivious that he's just this rich dickhead that everybody has to put up with. He's pretty hectic for an ex-hairdresser. Well, he talks about, he even says the line, I've been in over 50 fights. Or he even says, I think I've been in 50 fights. So he's very specific about how many fights he's been in. He is a loose 50 fights. Wow. So he's very specific about how many fights he's been in. He is a loose unit, that one. Great.
Starting point is 01:25:06 So, but look, he does a really good job of acting less crazy than what everybody else is saying about him. So for that alone, this is a fascinating documentary. Yeah, interesting. Look, I like Superman a lot, so this obviously appeals to me, and I'm fascinated by this movie that I kind of wish happened because it's insane. So, yeah, Death of Superman Lives What Happened.
Starting point is 01:25:31 John Schnapp, check it out. Love it. This week I'm going to read, and you know my feelings about Star Wars, but may have been turned around with Lando issue one. I read that. Is it good? It's not bad, yeah. All right.
Starting point is 01:25:45 Okay, join him for his biggest caper as Master of Charm Lando Calrissian gets his own comic book. Yes, he does. I'm on board. You know I love a caper. You do. And it's artist Alex Malieve who did Moon Knight.
Starting point is 01:25:56 Yeah. Which I enjoyed a lot. You bloody love Moon Knight. Yeah, I love Moon Knight also. Just the concept of it. It's nice. It's very peaceful. Well, those are two great watching readings.
Starting point is 01:26:04 So I should read that? Is it good? Yeah. Is it a fun caper? Well, it's a start-up caper. It's nice. It's very peaceful. Well, those are two great watching readings. So I should read that? Is it good? Is it a fun caper? Well, it's a start-up caper. It's building to a fun caper. Yeah. Does it seem like it's going to be fun? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:26:10 It's got that sweet Lando charm. Yeah. Okay, cool. When's it set? Maybe before Empire. It's definitely before Empire. Right. Okay, sure.
Starting point is 01:26:18 I think it's just before he gets Cloud City. But he doesn't have the Millennium Falcon. I don't believe so. Okay, great. I mean, he might. I don't know. I skim a lot of comics. Oh, sureium Falcon. I don't believe so. Okay, great. I mean, he might. I don't know. I skim a lot of comics. Oh, sure.
Starting point is 01:26:26 Yeah. This is from Krista. If you remember Krista, she was the official Rick and Morty animated girl person thing here. Oh, I remember. Yeah. Anyway, she's got some Rick and Morty news, which is exciting. Season two starts July 26th.
Starting point is 01:26:40 It'll be on Adult Swim and, of course, Hulu. Rick and Morty also crashed an episode of The Simpsons for The Simpsons season finale back in May did you see that? no the couch gag it was the longest Simpsons couch gag ever
Starting point is 01:26:50 and it's basically The Simpsons run up their couch and then Rick and Morty like crash the spaceship into The Simpsons and just splatter them great and then it just goes from there
Starting point is 01:26:59 it's amazing it's the best thing The Simpsons has done in like 15 years and they didn't animate it so sure yeah yeah it's really great I didn't animate it. Sure, yeah.
Starting point is 01:27:06 Yeah, it's really great. I didn't watch the episode. I just watched that bit. I've seen the first two episodes of Rick and Morty because they are online already somehow. It's great. It's really good. I love it. You know what?
Starting point is 01:27:16 I've also been reading. By reading, I mean watching. Now that you mention that, BoJack Horseman is back. Second season of BoJack Horseman. I still haven't started watching that. It's great. I enjoy it a lot. It gets some mixed feelings about it but i enjoy it and it's got paul f tompkins as
Starting point is 01:27:28 anthropomorphic dog mr peanut butter so if you like him i don't know he's yeah is is he pretty much will arnett's the similar character from arrested development uh not really because the same cadences same cadences, certainly. Excellent. Yeah. Anyway, I've got more on this. He's less of an idiot. Okay, good. He's still kind of an idiot.
Starting point is 01:27:49 Yeah, good. He's a horse. She also says, sorry, back to Krista, if there is a season three and if I get to work on it and there's a slightest chance I could influence the story and design, which I'm sure there isn't, sorry to say, I will try and get your likenesses in the design of some random character or alien or something.
Starting point is 01:28:05 Yes. And now remember, a promise is a promise. That's right. You've promised to do it, so you have to. I would bloody love that. Me too. That would be a dream come true, that thing you sort of vaguely promised, but not really. No, definitely promised.
Starting point is 01:28:18 Yeah. One last thing. A while back, I started drawing my friends in the style of Rick and Morty for fun. If you want a version for the weekly panel or something, I don't know why, but anyway, I'd be happy to do that for you. Definitely. Nah. No, I'm kidding. Love it.
Starting point is 01:28:31 I would love that. Sounds amazing, yeah. Of course, if it's any kind of, if it's hard or whatever. Yeah, don't do it. That's our motto. We're not hypocrites. We wouldn't want you to live your life in any way that we wouldn't. So if it's hard, just don't do it.
Starting point is 01:28:44 Exactly. All right. Got some letters, Mason. I'm ready. Do you want me to live your life in any way that we wouldn't. So if it's hard, just don't do it. Exactly. All right. Got some letters, Mason. I'm ready. Do you want me to read them? Yes. We've only got two letters because we read the earlier one earlier. We blew through a lot of letters.
Starting point is 01:28:52 We did. Hey, greetings from Nepal. I'll get straight to the point. Doesn't muck around. No. That's good. It's got stuff to do in Nepal. That's right.
Starting point is 01:29:00 I just want to know your thoughts on the Doctor Who trailer for Season 9. Maisie Williams being cast. Some say she's playing the Doctor's granddaughter. I think that's true. And presumed Dalek City. The trailer looks good. I was okay with the last season. I think the introduction of the new Doctor put me off a bit.
Starting point is 01:29:14 You as well, because of his weird suit, right? Yeah. But I think the upcoming season... They should consult with me on the weird suits. I agree. But you know what? I think the problem is... The same thing happened with Matt Smith, and you pointed this out.
Starting point is 01:29:25 They let the actors choose the suit initially, and then season two they're like, okay, we'll take elements of what you've done and we're going to fix it. Really? Is that what they do? I feel like that's what they do because the season two Matt Smith is dressed differently than season one, and season two Doctor Who, and that is his name.
Starting point is 01:29:42 Somebody also emailed him with credits for a Doctor Who episode, and Doctor Who is credited as Doctor Who. That's his name. It's not The Doctor. Yes. So we've never been wrong. Never wrong. Yeah, but I think they change it.
Starting point is 01:29:54 I think they're like, okay, enough of that weird magician crap that you're wearing. Surely they don't let the actor choose. That is a part of it. I've heard that the past three seasons, three changes. Maybe you're right now that I think about it. Because David Tennant, he saw Jamie Oliver in a suit wearing chucks and whatever. Oh, okay, right.
Starting point is 01:30:10 And Matt Smith chose the bow tie because initially it was going to be no bow tie. But there's too much shirt front, you said. There's too much shirt front. And this one has the collar up to the top and you hate that. I like that. It's weird. Yeah. Russian mobster.
Starting point is 01:30:20 Yeah. Special Russian mobster. Anyway, I think the new season will be much better. Also, what do you think? Did you see the trailer? No. No, it looks pretty solid. Bloody sprung Russian mobster. Anyway, I think the new season will be much better. Also, what do you think? Did you see the trailer? No. No, it looks pretty solid. Bloody sprung this on me.
Starting point is 01:30:29 I forgot, all right? Fair enough. Do you want to pause while I watch the trailer? If you want. Okay, great. I can read through tweets while you watch it if you want. Okay, I'm going to watch this on silent then. That's fine with me, mate.
Starting point is 01:30:41 As long as you shut your bloody mouth. I'm going to. No, no, no, no. No, no, no, no. No, no, no, no. No, no, no, no. No, no to no no no no no no no no no no no no here we go is it series nine uh yeah whatever okay great thank you uh zython for tweeting my easter egg video off okay there's a lot of space i'm looking at oh the tardis is there are you doing a reaction video. Oh, there's water. He's leaping through. Oh.
Starting point is 01:31:07 Well, a lot of stuff happening. There's some darkness. Maybe some narration, but I wouldn't know because the sound's off. Lights are going out in a corridor. Great. I'm enjoying that. It's never been done before on a TV or movie. Or with Doctor Who.
Starting point is 01:31:19 No, not on Doctor Who. There's a Dalor. Is it a Dalic? A Dalor? We've never seen a Dalic on Doctor Who before. Why do I know their name? There's a lady. Is it the Master?? A Dalor? We've never seen a Dalek on Doctor Who before. Why do I know their name? There's a lady. Is it the Master again?
Starting point is 01:31:28 The Master's back. Yeah, the Master's back. Capaldi's hair's bigger. Good. There's a city. Yeah, it's great. Yeah, Doctor Who. No wonder people love these reaction videos.
Starting point is 01:31:37 They're really good. Has he redesigned the TARDIS again? Yeah, I don't know. I can't remember what he did last time. The Master's back, okay. What's-Her-Face is back. Who? You know What's-Her-Face. No. Oh, the Impossible Girl. Jenna Coleman. Yeah, yeah,'t know. I can't remember what he did last time. Face is back, okay. What's-her-face is back. Who? You know What's-her-face.
Starting point is 01:31:46 No. Oh, the Impossible Girl. Jenna Coleman. Yeah, yeah, she's good. Did they ever explain why she was a Dalek and then she was a regular human? Yes. What was the twist? She fell through time or something, so she was everywhere and everyone.
Starting point is 01:31:58 That happened with Rose. Yeah, but... Oh, he's wearing sunglasses. Cool stuff's happening. Oh, is he going to catch the sonic screwdriver? Oh, it's okay. He didn't. I don't know.
Starting point is 01:32:08 It was left ambiguous whether he caught the sonic screwdriver that was being thrown through the air. Oh, there's Maisie. All right. Great. All in all success? Yeah. So that's his daughter.
Starting point is 01:32:22 Yeah. Or granddaughter. Oh, yeah. Because that was from that show. Yeah. I mean, it's from the old... Did you read any tweets? Yeah, I read like one.
Starting point is 01:32:30 But then you did that amazing reaction video, so... Good enough. Yeah. What do you think? I don't care about Dr. Z. I'll watch an episode and then I'll stop watching it again. That's what you always say. And I do.
Starting point is 01:32:44 I'm true to my word. Watch one episode, I say I'm going to watch more, stop watching it again. That's what you always say. And I do. I'm true to my word. Watch one episode, I say I'm going to watch more, then I don't. That's true. You've got that charm about you. Also, what do you guys think about the Sherlock special episode trailer, which is going to be set in a more accurate time period? I'd love to hear your thoughts. Nick would probably moan about it.
Starting point is 01:32:59 Wait a second. That's it. Love the podcast. You guys are awesome. Do you see that one? I saw a frame of it on Facebook. It looked pretty sweet. Oh, yeah? Yeah. Watson has a moust guys are awesome. Do you see that one? I saw a frame of it on Facebook. It looked pretty sweet. Oh, yeah?
Starting point is 01:33:06 Yeah. Watson has a moustache. Is there a conceit to it? Does somebody hit their head and then go back in time? No, no, it's just set. Set then? Okay, right. Are we going to see old-timey Moriarty?
Starting point is 01:33:15 We don't know yet. Oh, that'd be cool. Well, maybe not because they're bringing him back sort of for the new season. He shot himself in the head. Yeah, but do you remember the end of the last episode, there's like a video of Moriarty and he's like,
Starting point is 01:33:26 I'm back. I mean, I'm not saying he is back, but I'm saying he's going to be back in some capacity. Oh, right. Also, but...
Starting point is 01:33:32 Unofficial intelligent virtual butler. Please. Okay. Like, like evil Jarvis. Yeah. Like, you know, Sherlock jumped off the roof
Starting point is 01:33:39 and he was fine, so... He shot himself in the head. Yeah, but blood packs and whatever. I don't know, man. Yeah. True. All right. was fine so he shot himself in the head yeah but blood packs and whatever i don't know man yeah all right maybe hush style plastic surgery yep yeah great great great last letter yep hey gentle hello gentleman and mason my name is paul oh rough hello you're bloody copping it mate my name is paul and i'm a mathematics professor living in Korea and originally from California.
Starting point is 01:34:06 I used to live in Auckland for a while and that's like kind of close to you guys, right? It's my first time writing to you. That you know of. Ooh. Just wondering, are you guys fans of The Simpsons? Do you consider them a classic part of your childhood as many do? Ask because you never seem to reference it. I feel like you would be, but then again, I feel like you wouldn't be.
Starting point is 01:34:24 Cheers, Paul. We are enigmas like that. Yeah. Look, I loved The Simpsons during the, what I like to think of as the good period of The Simpsons,
Starting point is 01:34:35 which is seasons 3 through 10. Yes. And then it turned to garbage and it's gone for another 16 years. Yes. Apparently they're closing it up at season 30.
Starting point is 01:34:43 I don't believe that. No, neither do I. Did you hear that? For real? Yeah, that's what I heard. That's a lot of seasons. 30 years of The Simpsons. Yeah. Apparently they're closing it up at season 30. I don't believe that. No, neither do I. Did you hear that? For real? Yeah, that's what I heard. That's a lot of seasons. 30 years of The Simpsons. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:34:49 But then when they get there, they'll be like, maybe we can do 40. Like, what'll happen is there'll be 30 years of The Simpsons and they'll be like, so The Simpsons has outlasted every TV show in existence
Starting point is 01:35:00 except for this TV show which lasted this many years and they'll be like, we'll beat that and then it'll just go on forever. We'll beat the Frasier and Cheers combined. That wouldn't be 30 years, though, would it? What goes for 30 years?
Starting point is 01:35:11 I think that's... Doctor Who, I guess. Yeah, but that's back and forth. It's stopped. It doesn't count. It may be the longest running series ever. Yeah, you might be right. There's probably some weird British thing we don't know.
Starting point is 01:35:23 Yeah. Harry Shearer's back on The Simpsons. Yeah, he is. No surprise there. No, I like it a lot. Oh, an hour's work for $600,000. Sure, I'll do that. Yes, please.
Starting point is 01:35:33 Yeah, no, a big part of my childhood. Like most children, our entire vocabulary was composed and all our wit was composed of Simpsons quotes. Correct. That's exactly how it was at school. You just say things from The Simpsons. I remember when I was a kid, a young man, I watched it initially when it was really, really good,
Starting point is 01:35:53 and then my auntie said, I don't like that Bart Simpson. He's like a rude little boy. And then my parents were like, no more Simpsons. And I'm like, what the fuck? And so there was a years, a couple of years where I had to like sneak around and watch it all over. Oh, sure, yeah.
Starting point is 01:36:08 Watch it in alleyways. Yeah. Watch it down in the woods. Correct. It's still super funny. Like those original ones. Yeah, those episodes, sure. They're still like some of those things like
Starting point is 01:36:19 I'll be talking to people about episodes and mention something from the lemon tree episode or whatever and just start laughing the hank scorpio one i was just thinking about one of my favorite one of my favorite episodes i think i've told i was speaking to someone about this recently in the simpsons movie that came out i was just thinking about this today albert brooks is the villain yes and he plays a very hank scorpio-esque villain but he's not hank scorpio yes but here's the thing. They were originally going to make the villain
Starting point is 01:36:46 in the movie Hank Scorpio but they thought no one's really going to remember that or whatever. What? So they changed it. They got this guy with the same voice
Starting point is 01:36:54 but changed the villain. You just... Why not make it Hank Scorpio? It would have been much funnier. That would have been amazing. You know what though? To be fair, that movie's not bad.
Starting point is 01:37:02 The movie, yeah. That brought it back a little bit. Yeah, because they got a lot of the old writers and whatevers. So, yeah, I like The Simpsons. It's good. Yeah, it's a shame it's gone 16 years too long. I also really like Futurama.
Starting point is 01:37:13 So that's also really good. Do you like Futurama? I love Futurama. Yeah. Actually, I haven't finished the last season yet. A couple of reasons, but mainly because if I watch the rest of Futurama, then there's no more Futurama. There's no Futurama ever again.
Starting point is 01:37:24 I don't want to do that. The new seasons are fairly strong though, aren't they? Futurama from memory. But at least Rick and Morty's gone and that's pretty sweet. Yeah. Do you know there's a Professor Brothers TV series? No. Yeah, it's been out for years.
Starting point is 01:37:39 Is it that weird stop motion animation thing? No, it's just regular animation. Huh. That Brad Neely stuff. Those Professor Brothers cartoons are possibly some of the funniest things that have ever been on the internet
Starting point is 01:37:49 I believe that yeah Anthony Samantha sorry if you've never seen guys look up the Professor Brothers if you've never seen them
Starting point is 01:37:57 or Brad Neely yeah N-double-A-L-Y yeah great stuff very funny he does a good film history episode he has a weird rivalry with a dean, which is really funny.
Starting point is 01:38:07 He tells the Sodom and Gomorrah story, which is hilarious. It's all very good. Anyway, that's the show for this week. We did it again. Anything you'd like- Some would say, what are you doing? Will you keep doing again? The answer is we don't know.
Starting point is 01:38:21 It's not the point. Yeah, it's not the point. Where can people find us? Oh, they can find us at Weekly Planet Pod at Gmail and Facebook and Twitter and Bandcamp. Correct.
Starting point is 01:38:31 Where we've got our audio commentaries. Yes. You can go to patreon.com slash MrSunday. Do you clean these up when I mess them up? Just leave them in. Yeah, I definitely clean them up.
Starting point is 01:38:40 I don't believe you. Patreon.com slash MrSundayMovies if you want to make a regular monthly donation to the show. Do you want to keep it running? Absolutely. It'll keep running anyway. I mean't believe you patreon.com slash mr sunday movies if you want to make a regular monthly donation to the show if you want to keep it running
Starting point is 01:38:47 absolutely but it'll keep running anyway I mean yeah regardless whatever you want to do just listen for free it's fine
Starting point is 01:38:51 I haven't actually put anything up there for a while on the patreon thing so I should do that I mean we never to be fair we never promised
Starting point is 01:38:57 we would but I feel like regardless I should do something at some point yeah I don't know how it is
Starting point is 01:39:02 I'm at mr sunday movies on twitter I'm at wikipedia brown on twitteries on Twitter I'm at WikipediaBrown on Twitter BrutonTheBasilisk yeah create the themes we love it
Starting point is 01:39:10 we love the themes yes oh guys if you want to send in a letters theme that I can play over the phone yes to this podcast
Starting point is 01:39:16 I think maybe the way it should be done the easiest way upload it to YouTube then send the link to Mason then you'll play it through his phone that's genius
Starting point is 01:39:22 because otherwise if you email them then I have to kind of email it to him or send it to him in a weird text format or whatever just upload it on then you'll play it through his phone. That's genius. Because otherwise, if you email them, then I have to kind of email it to him or send it to him in a weird text format or whatever. Just upload it on something you can play directly from a phone and send him the link. Yeah. And he will possibly play it.
Starting point is 01:39:35 Yeah. This week's theme, let's make it easy. I'll let his theme played on a ukulele. Can at some point- You know why? Because I'm thinking of small. I'm thinking of Ant-Man. I'm thinking small.
Starting point is 01:39:47 Okay. I'm thinking of weird twee instruments. Will you take a kazoo? I know they're different, but it's also small. Yes, I'll also take any kind of weird tiny instrument I'll take. Okay. Yeah. But it has to be not like...
Starting point is 01:39:57 Finger cymbals. Oh, really? I was going to say triangle. Yeah. Anything. Very good work, yeah. All right. Tiny instruments.
Starting point is 01:40:04 Bloody do it Vuvuzela I know that's giant but it's one exception but it's weird yeah next week what's next week
Starting point is 01:40:12 don't know what's that next week not Fantastic Four that's the week after that's the week after Mission Impossible no that's June that's July 30
Starting point is 01:40:21 yeah you're right second week off no we won't. We'll be back. We'll do something. I'm trying to think. I don't know, man. Maybe we'll do Fantastic Four just in general.
Starting point is 01:40:30 We can talk about the movies and some of the comics and whatever. Yeah, cool. Great. I've read zero Fantastic Four comics. I've read heaps of them. There we go. I've seen the movies and you haven't, so it all evens out. It all evens out.
Starting point is 01:40:41 Yeah. Yeah. Great. All right. Thanks, everyone. Bye. Someone recommended the catchphrase for me, snap dat neck,
Starting point is 01:40:48 but am I stuck with the spaghetti one? You are. So I'm going to say grab dat gem, you guys. You know you can do it. Where's my biscotti? Yay. As women, our life stages come with unique risk factors,
Starting point is 01:41:05 like high blood pressure developed during pregnancy, which can put us two times more at risk of heart disease or stroke. Know your risks.
