The Weekly Planet - Blade Runner 2049 - Caravan Of Garbage

Episode Date: October 8, 2026

There are very few legacy sequels that match or potentially surpass the original, often they end up being tired retreads of what came before. Blade Runner 2049 is one of those few exceptions, coming 3...5 years later and helmed by Denis Villeneuve it reintroduces us to the ruined future with updated elements like more compliant Replicants, AI girlfriends, horrendous poverty and Harrison Ford in a t-shirt. It also has Ryan Gosling as K doing his own version of Blade Running around with hologram Ana De Armas. Incredible movie. Starting point is 00:00:00 Thanks, man. It's good. Yeah, that's smart. Thanks. This is the bonus stuff. This is bonus stuff. There's like a two-second delay when you hit record. Because our machine's cracking up.
Starting point is 00:00:12 It's cracking us up. It's cracking us up every day. With how it's joking on us all the time. Right. God, killing our riffs. Not this one. No, this one's good. Okay.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Welcome back everybody to another episode of the weekly planet where we're wrapping up to... Wrong. Fuck, yeah. This has also been in the riffs. This is the riffs. God, okay. This is the riffs. Okay, this is the riffs.
Starting point is 00:00:35 Good. Welcome back everybody to another episode of Caravanagh Garbage where we're wrapping up talking about all of the Blade Runner movies and Blade Runner Forever. I agree. Blade Runner Forever. Unless Blade Runner 2099 is bad, in which case we never liked it. We didn't like it. We never liked any of the franchise.
Starting point is 00:00:51 Disappointing. It is disappointing, isn't it? You know, it's not disappointing. People who leave a like on this video. But you know what also is not disappointing. Getting Deney Villanou to direct the. This is before he was even the Juneman. That's right.
Starting point is 00:01:03 This is before all his movies had failed financially. Only some of his movies had failed financially at this point. They invited him. They're like, do you want to do a big sci-fi, cyberpunk spectacular that's going to fail at the box office? And he said, count me in. Put my name on the dotted line. Am I responsible for any of this debt?
Starting point is 00:01:20 No? Good. Great. Do it. The closest thing he'd done to this before was probably a rival. Oh, yeah. Which is a spectacular sci-fi adventure. Yeah, it's an adventure.
Starting point is 00:01:30 adventure into sadness, sad time loop sadness. And then he got the call for this. I've already explained the call. Oh yes, he got the call. Also, he was asked to do this because Ridley Scott, who of course directed the first one, decided to direct Alien Covenant instead. Okay. Got a quote from Ridley Scott for this,
Starting point is 00:01:49 who in 2023 said, I shouldn't have had to make that decision, but I had to. I should have done Blade Runner 2. Okay. I'm glad he didn't. Interesting. Because I don't think he would have made a movie as good as this. one. Very interesting. An interesting betrayal of your Ridley Scott
Starting point is 00:02:04 fandom. You love Gladiator too. You love it when they fight those big CGI seal panthers or whatever they were. What do they fight in that? That was good. What you're describing and I'm vaguely remembering. And at the end is like, Ramos for Freedom! We've done it! Who's the villain? That's Dental Washington in the end, I think. That's right. He copped it in the end, didn't he? He deserved it probably because he shot Connie Britton. Oh no.
Starting point is 00:02:29 You've said it too, right? I think so. Is that what happened at the end? Yeah, man. They fought a little river. Anyways, the story of this, the world has gone to shit, sorry, the world has continued to go to more shit.
Starting point is 00:02:42 Even more so. Yeah, no good, man. And as a result of some things that have happened between 2019 and 2049, including a big blackout, which wiped out all the data. Oh my God, thank God. What a dream.
Starting point is 00:02:54 Oh, my God, all my credit card debt, gone. All your photos? Good. Your MySpace. Yeah, good. Very embarrassing. I don't think that can be resurrected, but if it is. Oh, your Ticcatech app? Sure.
Starting point is 00:03:08 You're sick of it, right? I'm sick of all the price gouging. I'm sick of Ticketych and Live Nation. Yeah, man, all those. So we're in a paper future, really, aren't we? But also... And also a little crystal ball future. That's an old crystal ball, though, from the before times. Because it's where Decker...
Starting point is 00:03:24 Yeah. Whatever. I'm aware. Yeah, you've seen the movie. Yeah. Yeah. And also, there was a point where... replicants were outlawed because they're the ones responsible for the blackout. But now there's a new guy, a new replicant building guy,
Starting point is 00:03:38 who I'd love to talk about. Oh, yes. Who's made replicants that are, they'll just do what you say. And they'll run around a bit. But they're always going to sit in front of the machine and lock in. That's right. And be in the zone. Hell yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:50 I mean, just a side note, the replicant emotional state test now is so much more intense than it was back in the day. It's like when back in the olden days, if you wanted to get a job at the supermarket, you just walked in it, you gave a firm handshake to the manager. But now you have to like do a Zoom interview and an online quiz and then perform a one act play about the fresh produce section or whatever. Absolutely. It's that now. And you're using an AI and you're talking to an AI. Right. It's a crazy world we live in and I like it.
Starting point is 00:04:17 That's an acting exercise that obviously, like a thing that Ryan Gosling would kind of warm up to get in the zone for acting. Is it? Yeah, something like that. Some shit, you know. something about remembering stuff and becoming Kay. Who's the character of Kay? Who I think is a really interesting protagonist for this, because yes, he is a blade runner like
Starting point is 00:04:38 decade, but there's no ambiguity in terms of like, ooh, is he a man or not? They're just like, no, he's not. He's a robot man. I mean, there is some ambiguity. Exactly. They do the ambiguity, but it's in a different and interesting way. And I'd love you to tell me about it. I'm going to take a minute off. But I... Well, look! the people said that I've been working hard
Starting point is 00:04:59 and I need a minute off Start the clock I don't think anybody's saying that Start it bed start the clock I think they're whipping They're whipping you and they're like Do more work They're whipping you
Starting point is 00:05:09 To get into shape while I take a minute off Alright because he has He's got memories K's got memories And he's like oh but of course They're fake memories Because I'm a replica or whatever But then it turns out that maybe
Starting point is 00:05:21 They're not fake memories They're memories from some guy Some kid or whatever And he's like, maybe I'm, maybe I'm someone's kid, right? Because there's evidence. We're all someone's daughters. We're all someone's son. Sorry, I know I'm on break, but I just wanted to pop back in to say that.
Starting point is 00:05:38 The Jod Farton reference. Sorry, you were saying something else? Because they find the bones of a replicant, but then it turns out she was pregnant, but how could it be? And where's the kid now? And everybody's like, might be you, K. Well, Kay's like that. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:53 But he's keeping it a secret. Yeah, he's got it. Maybe it's him. Because he works for Robin Wright-Pen and all the corporations are coming after him. I'm back off break. I got bored. Wow, all right.
Starting point is 00:06:03 You're going to work yourself to death, James. Good. I'm on break. Because we have the power of free will, unlike those replicants. Yeah, so that's all great. The ambiguity, the way they twist the ambiguity because they were secretive in the lead-up to this
Starting point is 00:06:18 about who Kay was going to be and whatever. And just straight out of the gate, he meets Little Glasses Dave Battista in his little glasses, this big acting era. Absolutely. Big subtle acting, I should say. True.
Starting point is 00:06:29 And it's just like, yeah, he's a replicant, man. Straight up. I love all of that. And just the way he's treated in this universe is so interesting because it's awful. Yeah. Like you see when the other uniformed cops are passing him and they're just like, fuck you. And he's like, ah, just puts his head down. His boss is probably using him as a sex robot also.
Starting point is 00:06:47 Sure. So his role in this universe and the fact that also he has an apartment and he has to eat food. and he has an AI girlfriend. Oh, isn't that sweet? It's really interesting. You think they just put him in a closet. Yeah, I know, right? At the PlayStation.
Starting point is 00:07:01 Yeah, well, that's where he keeps... Next to the brooms. Next to the brooms. But that's also, where's he going to keep his coats? If he's a good point. He's in the closet, you know? I guess you put him on the coat rack. Yeah, I guess you could.
Starting point is 00:07:11 In the closet. Yeah, and then he's one coat. And maybe he only has one coat. Like, does he need to... I guess he is sweating. He's just, like, the first time around. He's just a guy. He's a human.
Starting point is 00:07:22 He's a man. Yeah. He's got all the emotions and shit You can eat him in the head He doesn't like it He's a bit stronger He's got some good action set pieces in him But yeah, he's a guy
Starting point is 00:07:31 What I really find interesting about his AI girlfriend Is she's clearly a corporate product Because she's angling for an upgrade Like early on And she's clearly built Just to tell him he's amazing Which is, you know What AI is now
Starting point is 00:07:46 As soon as he comes home She's like, oh I've been, you know I've been cooped up here all day I got a bit of cabin fever Angling If only there was some piece of technology you could purchase, it would let me roam free. I don't think there's, I mean, Mackenzie Davis even says this,
Starting point is 00:08:01 but I don't really think there is much to that AI system. Right. Because they interlink at one point we could talk about. But she's like, there's not much in here. You're a pretty basic program. She also, you know, she gives him the name Joe. And then later he meets like a big commercial for one of those. You also calls him Joe.
Starting point is 00:08:21 Yeah, right. So it's clearly things. that they just do. But you know, she doesn't... You think his phone's listening in? Absolutely. Well, that's why she cuts herself off from the server or whatever.
Starting point is 00:08:31 So I guess she does have some fondness for him or some, you know, programming that looks after him. But yeah, that whole interaction is like, I don't know about this man. You don't know about this dystopian future, James? Yeah, some of it I like. I'm all for it.
Starting point is 00:08:44 Yeah, okay. I like their plastic raincoats. That's cool. That is fun. And you would get to, you know, fake kiss, fake Anadiamis, and that would be fun. I don't want a fake kiss.
Starting point is 00:08:52 fake anybody. Interesting. Even on break. So you'd rather real kiss everybody? I mean, not everybody. I don't know, man. Jared Leto?
Starting point is 00:09:05 No. Well, let's talk about that. So there's a couple of villains in this. Jared Leto... Within real life and in the movie. Yes, that's right. Jared Leto plays... Neander Wallace.
Starting point is 00:09:15 Who is the... He's the replacement. Tyrell, who got his head squeezed open in the first movie. I think this is... Even for the time, such a, like a big misstep casting him. Interesting. You don't think he has a well-deserved air of menace?
Starting point is 00:09:30 Yeah, but I think that's... Also, he's annoying because on the days and whatever, he put in the contacts and had people let him around. You know, he's all method of whatever. He's all method, you're absolutely right. And people are always like, you know, I worked with a guy, I can't really say who, but it was on Morbius and he sucks. And I'm like, God, I wonder who that is.
Starting point is 00:09:48 So, yeah, there's that sinister air to him. They're probably talking about Matt Smith. Probably are. There is that sinister air to him. And apparently they cast him because he's got a rock star vibe because apparently David Bowie was De Neve-Villan, who's first choice. Ah, but it passed away. Which would have been better, I think. But yeah, the fact that he is like a weird creep in real life, I guess that helps. Sure.
Starting point is 00:10:10 But I don't like looking at him. Yep. And I don't think he's that good at actor. And allegedly, all of the things, etc. Do you like his little satellite nuggets? That's fun. But he didn't meant that. in real life.
Starting point is 00:10:23 Oh, that's true. Yeah. No. Yeah, I love it. I mean, the retro future technology, because what you're going to do for this movie is, it's an extension of the future of 2019 from the perspective of 1982. The cassette futures. The cassette future, exactly.
Starting point is 00:10:38 So, you know, you've got things like big brands. Like, what could Atari possibly be doing? Casinos. NFT casinos. We've talked about this. We know that now. Yeah. But in the world of Blade Runner, I looked into it.
Starting point is 00:10:52 I was like, what do Atari make? Oh, what do they make? Okay. In 2049. Yes. And there's no hard evidence, but there was an Atari tie-in baseball cap that has speakers in the brim. Okay. And it also has Bluetooth and it can take phone calls.
Starting point is 00:11:08 Wow. Does that sound annoying and would look bad? Yeah. You know what they probably make pervert glasses? Oh, yeah. Yeah. That's the way technology is going. Yeah, there's true.
Starting point is 00:11:18 There's some pervert glasses in this. You can drone strike people while being a pervert. Hell yeah. Well, that's love, by the way, who I think is in, like, a great choice of a villain. The way she kills David Dash Maltchin in this, fucking hell, man. That's pretty ordinary, isn't it? And from behind, dishonorable. Yeah, dishonorable.
Starting point is 00:11:37 The model work in real locations in this is incredible. I think it's also worth pointing out that there's like over 1,100 visual effects shots in this movie. Name 1. There's an AI. There's a CGI woman. Oh, yeah. Okay, sure. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:49 Is that multiple effects in one? Because hair is different than skin and eyes are different than teeth. I'm only counting one. Okay, good. But the model work in this is great. We're a workshop who recently disclosed on corridor crew. They don't have a miniatures department anymore, which is such a travesty because so much of the city and buildings and in this, they're real things that they built. What do you think the models are now?
Starting point is 00:12:10 I'll stop your idea. A pervert. A pervert's rolling around in them, yeah. A pervert's personal collection. He's oiled up the city and he's rolling around in it. Yeah. And look, there is CGI enhancement to that. but there is something to be said for,
Starting point is 00:12:22 not the pervert thing, that's the thing he's doing. I'm oily Godzilla. Roll it around. But you know, you feel it when it's a camera moving through an actual space as opposed to a CGI camera moving through a nothing space, you know? You can tell.
Starting point is 00:12:38 And of course, this movie earned Roger Deacons his first Academy Award for Incredible filmmaking. What's his role again? Looking at stuff through a camera? Cinematographer, yes. Cinema man? Is that what he is?
Starting point is 00:12:49 He's a cinema. Man. Okay, that's what I thought. You probably know this, but he'd been nominated for an Oscar 13 times prior to this. 13-time Oscar loser? Yeah. Wow. Wow.
Starting point is 00:12:59 Who else here can say that? Not us. Not us. We've never lost an Oscar 13 times. Not us, and I never would. But, you know, you can talk about the cinematography for this. That in itself is like, it's probably a really good video that somebody else has made. Sure.
Starting point is 00:13:10 You know something about cinematography. It's called Blade Runner 2049, a moody masterpiece. It is, isn't it? You know? Yeah. It's got some stock audio. Some spooky one from the YouTube audio library. Oh my God, I love that YouTube audio library.
Starting point is 00:13:24 I'm always looking at it and going... Here's a snippet. God, that's good, isn't it? Right? Yeah. But the one piece of information from this I really liked was that for Old Vegas, he was inspired by the time that the Sydney Opera House in Australia was, it got dust stormed. I remember that?
Starting point is 00:13:39 Of course I do, James. And it went red and orange. Of course I do James. I was there seeing John Farnham. Were you? Yeah. How'd he go? He was red.
Starting point is 00:13:46 Was he? Yes. Because of the dust. Because of the dust, yeah. Because he gives it all. all. He does give it all also. Australian legend. Agreed. Sid Mead also helped with Vegas, because Vegas
Starting point is 00:13:56 is also, that's the old Blade Runner world. And he, of course, worked on the original. I think it's one of the last things that he did. Might even be the last thing that he did. Good way to go out, man. I mean, I'd rather go out surrounded by my friends and family and loved ones. Okay. As opposed to fiddling with a little model, but whatever.
Starting point is 00:14:12 You do, you, Sid Mead, R-IP. Oh, this is my favorite thing to do. Cut that. Come on, man. Extended edition The sex scene Which horny Dork futurist thought of this?
Starting point is 00:14:30 Probably Dork Futurist Sid Meade RIP So it's not enough that you've got an AI Hologram girlfriend Or a replicent woman You gotta like I mean it's a pretty cool visual You know having them kind of morph into one And the echoes of them both together
Starting point is 00:14:45 Sure But this is somebody's dream now forever I feel Look at this guy I want to prude. I just think it'd be confusing. Their faces, like, morphing in and out. Just go with the flow, man.
Starting point is 00:14:57 Look, man, I don't know if you know anything about me, Mason. I don't. I'm not a threesome guy, I think. I don't know, I've never done it. But I just think there's too much going on. And God bless you if you're out there. Sure. Doing that, but I don't know, man.
Starting point is 00:15:09 God bless you if you're out there writing the thing, erotic fan fiction. But I guess not everybody likes kind of just a constantly mutating flesh object. I think you'd probably have to work your way up to it. You know, you don't start there, I assume. Probably not. You know? Probably start with Gumbie. That's terrible. Anyways, Harrison Ford is back.
Starting point is 00:15:31 Oh, you haven't talked about Harrison Ford yet. Well, he does turn up at the hour 45 minute mark. That's right. Yeah. There's a few other returning characters, of course, Edward James Almost. Makes a brief cameo. Sean Young again, who we'll talk about. But I think of the stuff that they give him where he's able to act
Starting point is 00:15:48 Sure. Or do an action scene or be emotional. I think he does really well. How about the sitting? I mean, his sitting is all right. He is in a T-shirt for a lot of it. I think you mentioned that a couple weeks back. But yeah, maybe they could have, I don't know, Henley,
Starting point is 00:16:02 future Henley? You only said that because you're under the thumb of Big Henley. I am under the thumb of Big Henley. What about that weird plaid, checkered pattern shirt from the first one? Bring it back. Just an old version of that, you know? Bring it back. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:17 And it's old and weathered. it's sleeveless now. Yeah, absolutely. He's showing up his big biceps, man. But he's still got the tie. Yeah, he does. Yeah, I mean, I love their first interaction, which is a, you know, a fight in a booby-trapped former Las Vegas Hotel. That's a lot of fun.
Starting point is 00:16:33 Really cool. Holograms going on and off or whatever. Yeah, yeah. But I also, one of the things I like from this and his AI girlfriend like reinforces this in him because, you know, he finds the wooden horse, which belonged to the original memory owner, and it's not him even though he has that memory or whatever. They say in the first movie that you can. You can implant memories, like real memories into a person.
Starting point is 00:16:52 Correct. And that becomes like such a big part of this story. And it also, because like if he has those memories, which basically means that he lived that experience, in a way he is the original person. Oh. Do you know what I mean? I do know what you mean. But the fact that he thinks he's a special boy and he's not.
Starting point is 00:17:10 I mean, it was 2017. That was the era of you think you're special but you're ray nobody, you know? That's so true. But then surely after that, you thought, you were. you were nobody, but actually you were raised somebody. Yeah. Skywalker Palpatine. Exactly. And look, we know Ryan Gosling is doing a Star Wars movie, but this character just died on some steps.
Starting point is 00:17:27 So I don't think he's going to come back to be somebody. So he's Joe Stepdier? I guess he is. He died doing what he loved, Sid Meadstile. Oh, I'm dying on these steps. Oh, I love it. It's just extended an Astor, I guess, because this, if I just put this in. That would be weird. Without any previous context, yes. I'm taking a break.
Starting point is 00:17:47 I'm taking a break. All right. Now, this isn't an action movie, but there are some incredible action sequences and they're only brief. Well, then wouldn't you say it is an action movie? I would say it is an action movie. I've changed my mind.
Starting point is 00:17:58 I think my favorite moment in this is when the scavengers go to rob him. And he just... He baines one of them. Yeah, just immediately. That's move number one. I guess that's how you prove you the alpha. Yeah. And the way he doesn't fire many shots,
Starting point is 00:18:15 but when he does, it's just like the three shots that he does It's so precise and incredible. It's great. God, that guy would be sore on the side the next morning, you know what I mean? He'd be like, ooh. Ooh. You don't think he'd be like his spine would be in two pieces? Well, the spine is a series of pieces, you know, because it's...
Starting point is 00:18:32 Yeah. If anything, you'd be like, why is my spine fused itself together into only two pieces? Yeah. It's a miracle. This is a utopian future full of miracles. It certainly is, Mason. So we find it also later in the film that there's a revolution going on, which stemmed from when.
Starting point is 00:18:48 Harrison Ford and Rachel had a baby and that baby because they're both replicants probably. They never even answer if Harrison Ford is a replicant which is good, I think. You don't need to. It's not the point of that character
Starting point is 00:18:59 or the movie, or it is, I don't know. The point is that you don't need to know. But what if you want to know? What do you think then? No. Okay, it's not. But there is this slow bubble. God, I've got a real talent
Starting point is 00:19:12 for convincing people of things. You really do. But there is this slow, you know, bubbling revolution that's happening, which I guess we're going to see play out in Blade Runner, 2009, which is when that has happened. Agreed. But it's interesting seeing the seeds of that here. And then, of course, Harrison Ford gets to reunite with Rachel, who's not the original
Starting point is 00:19:33 Rachel, but I don't know, man. Look, I know it's 2017. And it's really good. Yeah. But I don't... Oh, you're not convinced by that. No, I mean, again, it's really good. I mean, it's as good as you could do it.
Starting point is 00:19:45 Sean Young has an opinion on this, though. Go on. Of course, Blade Rachel. Chul. She said, wasn't that so full of shit? And there was nothing I could do about it. It was very clear that they knew that the audience would be upset if I wasn't in it, but they didn't want me to bitch about it publicly. So they paid me some money, made me sign a non-disclosure agreement. Which expired moments before this interview, I guess. And gave me 30 seconds and I was like, fine. They did give my son Quinn a job. There you go. That's cool. In visual arts on the film.
Starting point is 00:20:12 And I said, all was forgiven. He's got great skills. All right then. Great. That's fun. That's But you know what else is... I mean, and I'm sure Quinn Young it loves to hear that story and know that that's how we got the job. Oh, my mummy got me my job. Yeah, but she was in Blade Runner, man. She's Blade Runner.
Starting point is 00:20:28 That's okay, right? You know, your mum can get you a job. Your mum got you this job. That's right. She was here for the interview. Speaking of being there, director Denis Villanue, obviously, he was under immense pressure about this sequel.
Starting point is 00:20:41 He wasn't sure whether he wanted... You don't know that's true. No, he said it multiple times. Maybe he was like, this is... God, I'm having the right of my life. This is so easy. No, Mason. Oh, well.
Starting point is 00:20:48 He was like, what a hard follow-up to do. I would have said it was easy. Just say that in every interview. No, man, it's easy. I got this. Yeah, yeah. And then it would come out and people were like, this is a masterpiece.
Starting point is 00:20:59 And he said it was easy, you know? Go in with the confidence of a young Paul W.S. Anderson, I think. Right, exactly. Yeah. the movie Soldier. Oh. So he, for the longest time,
Starting point is 00:21:21 he was like, I don't want to do that. I think nobody should make a Blade Runner sequel. But then he did. Again, Deney, if you're listening, you should have said,
Starting point is 00:21:28 in fact, you can say it now. You can be like, finally I can be open about this. I knew someone had to make a Blade Runner sequel, and I knew it could be me, and I knew it would be good, and it was easy.
Starting point is 00:21:36 And I had a great time. Well, what he didn't have a great time with was, Ridley Scott was on set a lot. Oh, here we go. I thought you were busy with that other thing you said you're doing Alien Covenant.
Starting point is 00:21:49 He's not that busy. You've seen that movie. So apparently Ridley Scott's presence became nearly unbearable when it came time to direct Harrison Ford. So Denis finally asked Scott how would he feel if his favourite director Ingmar Bergman
Starting point is 00:22:02 was looking over his shoulder while directing. Scott had a good laugh but understood and left. I mean, that's hard when the guy is behind you who directed the first. You're pulling out Ingmar Bergman. Exactly. He probably had that ready to go. Do you reckon he googled?
Starting point is 00:22:15 Who's Ridley Scott's favourite director? I'm not throw. this at him tomorrow. Yeah. But even though I think Harrison Ford is good in this for the time that he's given, there's things like at the end when they're doing a punch up at the beach.
Starting point is 00:22:27 Sure. And haven't we all? Yeah, we've all done it. It's an Australian writer passage. We're going to do it after this. But he's just kind of sitting in a chair like, like a dumb drowning, I think. Yeah, that's right.
Starting point is 00:22:39 Harrison, in this scene you're drowning, we're going to simulate that by filling this room with water. So yeah, it just feels a bit like, I don't know. You know? Sure. you're saying it's Harrison Ford doing his Harrison Ford thing. Well, I think he does these good Harrison Ford doing this. But they're, I think, they should have given him something else to do in that moment.
Starting point is 00:22:55 Yeah. Because he literally is just drowning until Ryan Gosling rescues him. Like, that's the sequence. Yeah. And then the replicant's like, I'm the best one. I'm like, that's a fucking insane thing. You know what he could have done? He could have sawn the handcuffs open with what?
Starting point is 00:23:09 Origami unicorn that he kept from the first movie. Oh my God. And everybody was like, oh my God, it's the origami unicorn from the first movie. And it's hardened with time. And Gaff knew that this would happen because they have the same memories because they're both a replicant of each other. I thought he said he was a regular man.
Starting point is 00:23:23 And then he spin kicks. He spin kicks everyone, you know? Which he learned from his spinner. That's good, Mason. Well, speaking of spinners. Oh, but it's nice that he gets reunited with his daughter, I think. I think it's really lovely. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:23:35 That's a great ending. Well, not reunited, just regularly united. Glass. Well, because he never met her. Oh, he never met her. You're right. Because he was doing the right thing. He was doing the safe and right thing.
Starting point is 00:23:44 So you're a person. Yes, I am. and you're also a person, Harrison Ford. Very good. This is good. We are good friends and family now. I know. Who's that guy on the steps?
Starting point is 00:23:53 I don't know, some guy. I think he's a robot. Yeah. I didn't ask. He's dead, but who cares? He died doing what he loved. Stairs. Death on stairs.
Starting point is 00:24:05 Anyways, you know, it's time for? What's the time of? Trivia runner. Trivia 49. Wow. Yeah. Here's that soldier thing you were talking about. Yes.
Starting point is 00:24:14 That you brought up. Yeah. The garbage scowls that Kay sees in the metal wasteland on his way to the sweatshops are nearly identical to the ones seen by Todd in the off-world colony of Arcadia. Nearly identical? Nearly identical? Well, it's been 20 odd years or whatever. Oh, they must have been. 13 years, had some slight upgrades.
Starting point is 00:24:34 Yeah. Because of the requirements of the local council. Sure. But also, they're just, they're bins. Yeah, Denisville and agrees that soldier. There's only a certain, there's only certain design features a bin can have. Mason, if we don't link this back, this can't be the Blade Runner trilogy. I guess that's true.
Starting point is 00:24:49 It has to be two Blade Runner movies and just whatever in the middle. Yeah. Yeah. Well, why can't that be the name of the trilogy? I guess it can. When you mash these up at the end of the year, you'd just be called two Blade Runner movies and something in the middle. Something you won't like.
Starting point is 00:25:03 Yeah. Harrison Ford actually agreed to son of this movie before Deney Villanoo. He was already in. Did he think it was because Ridley Scott was going to direct? Yeah, or whoever. Did he think he was going to get money for it? Yeah, he did. Well, it's estimated.
Starting point is 00:25:14 Nobody knows that he got about it. about 12 million for this. Not bad. Good money if you can get it, which we can't. Correct. I wish we had a legacy sequel we could do. Right? Yeah. You know what? If we stopped doing these videos today, we're just going on. We come back in several decades. 2049. Yeah. It'll be a big flop. Yeah, this was a big flop. Yeah, this was a big flop. But we'll get $12 million. Yeah, we'll get $12 million. Okay. So there's a bunch of supplementary material for this. There was three short films that came out before, Blackout, 2022, which is about the blackout. It's also buy. one of the guys who did the Animatrix.
Starting point is 00:25:47 It's cool. Then there's Nexus Dawn, which is about bringing the replicants back. Then there's Nexus Dork, which is about some guy who watches all these little Blade Runner prequels. Oh, watches them on the internet. That's rude. That's rude.
Starting point is 00:26:04 Whoever you're talking about. And there's... I'm talking about you, the viewer. And there's 2048 Nowhere to Run, which is about the Dave Battista character. And basically... Saper Morton. Yeah, he reveals his...
Starting point is 00:26:15 himself to the world and that's how he, that's how it kicks off the movie. Yeah. And the tree and etc. You might have seen it, Mason, but the original police spinner from Blade Runner is so very briefly seen when Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling are running to escape and then it just gets torpedoed
Starting point is 00:26:32 or missile, whichever one is above the sea. So that's cool. They put that in for a second. Pretty cool. Damn, I kept that car for like 30 years. Kept it in pristine condition.
Starting point is 00:26:42 Yeah. In my lounge room for some reason. Yeah, man. In my Vegas lounge room. Now, Blade Runner famously, original Blade Runner, and probably Soldier, but probably not really. It's famous for its extended cut. Oh, yes. This one does in a way.
Starting point is 00:26:56 Go on. Editor Joe Walker, he said that the first assembly of this film was nearly four hours, and for convenience's sake, and also for his bladder's sake, he said, they broke it into two viewings. And he said, there was something about breaking into those two halves that flowed really well. And he taught with the idea of, well, what if, you know, what if, you know, what if it was. Speaking of flowing really well. This will be extended. I'll cut it really well. So they're talking with the idea of giving each half a title.
Starting point is 00:27:23 So people have taken that as... Before the piss break and after the piss break. That's right. 2049. Empty bladder, not empty bladder. Flip that. Full bladder, empty bladder. 2049.
Starting point is 00:27:32 And people have been like, oh, so this was going to be two movies. That was never really going to be the case. No, you idiots. Yeah. You Nexus dorks. I'd see four hours of this. It is a slow movie.
Starting point is 00:27:43 And there are sequences where, you know, like, Ryan Gosling walks into B Vegas. And he was just told like, walk slower. Just slow, slow. And I like the pace of this. I think it works really, really well. Slow, dumb ass. You slow dumb ass? Even slower. Yeah, it's got like
Starting point is 00:27:59 what I love about the movie is that it basically has two moods. Yeah. Like slow, haunted melancholy and like dread preceding intense upsetting violence. Yeah. Pretty cool. Pretty cool. Pretty cool. But you know what's not cool? What's that? The box office.
Starting point is 00:28:15 I was going to say war. Yeah, yeah. Come on, man. Think about it. What's worse? We got that good song about how war's not good, though, and I like that. Okay. Box office is worse, then.
Starting point is 00:28:24 It is. Bad box office. On a budget of $150 million, potentially more, and it would be more, obviously, for marketing, etc. This made $276 million worldwide. And I guess it was discovered that the masses don't have, like, a nostalgia for Blade runner. Like, it's known as a good movie. Yeah. But they've got nostalgia for Blade.
Starting point is 00:28:42 Yep. They've got nostalgia for cool runnings. You put them together, not so much. Blade runnings. Blade running. You know, he didn't like this, though. Rutger Hauer. You didn't give me a chance to answer.
Starting point is 00:28:52 Do you know who doesn't like this? Ryan Gosley? I don't know, actually. I assume he liked it. You did a pretty good job. Yeah, I think so too. But we don't know the man's heart and mind. Yeah, if you know him, ask him.
Starting point is 00:29:03 Is that the correct answer? No. Rudka Hauer. Oh, what? He said, it looks great, but I struggle to see why that film was necessary. I just think if something is so beautiful, you should just leave it alone
Starting point is 00:29:13 and not make another film. It's not a character-driven movie and there's no humour. There's no love, there's no soul. You can see the homage to the original, but that's not enough for me. I mean, he is... Sounds like someone didn't get invited back.
Starting point is 00:29:24 Well, he died. You so did racial. Yeah, she died. But she got shot on the head. What? I mean, he's... I don't agree with that, but, you know,
Starting point is 00:29:34 I wasn't the best part of the first Blade Runner movie, so what do I know? Yeah. But Ridley Scott and also directed Denise Villanoo, they have opinions on that, movie. I bet they would.
Starting point is 00:29:44 This movie. I bet they would. Here we go. Here we go. A couple of holly weird types with their opinions. Can't wait to hear this. Both of them have cited the movie's length and slow pacing is the main reason for its disappointing box office.
Starting point is 00:29:57 Scott felt that the movie was at least 30 minutes too long. I would see that four-hour cut though. Yeah, I'm sure. And although he admitted that he was partially to blame since he provided input for the screenplay and Villanoo said that while he's proud of the movie, he realized afterwards that he had made the most expensive art house movie in cinema history. And that's a huge financial risk.
Starting point is 00:30:16 But I don't care. It's great. I'm glad it exists. Not our money. No, we don't give a shit. That's exactly right. Thanks Sony and Warner Brothers, whoever else's. You dumb asses.
Starting point is 00:30:26 You stupid idiots. You dumb asses. Future of Blade Runner, obviously. Obviously. There was an anime called Black Lotus in 2021, which I haven't seen, but apparently is good. And of course, we've got the upcoming television series. That's right.
Starting point is 00:30:40 Will there be a camera? from Ryan Gosling? No. Interesting. You don't know that for sure. The Limitless TV series had a cameo from Ryan Gosling. From Ryan Gosling. No, Bradley Cooper.
Starting point is 00:30:52 Ryan Gosling did that? He was like, I'm still limitless. You wouldn't believe how limitless I am. I believe it. And the main guy in this show was like, bu, woo, woo, woo, well, I thought I was the only guy who was limitless. Nah, man. Woo, woo, where, where, where?
Starting point is 00:31:05 What's the limitless movie? Get educated. Right? That's what Bradley Cooper should have told it. I was in it. I also, for people wondering, The 1995 sequel novel Blade Runner, The Edge of Human, author KWGTA provided an in-universe origin for the term Blade Runner, explaining it as a corruption of the German phrase, bleaburugig, meaning stay quiet.
Starting point is 00:31:26 Or stay calm. Oh, it's both. It's both. All right. Those Germans. That's a, you say that to somebody. I guess it's context related, right? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:35 It's like, what are they saying to me right now? What are these Germans saying to me? Maybe they were initially hunting down a bunch of German replicants? And had to be like, stay calm! Stay cut. Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Blade Runner started again. It's worked. And look at this guy on the ground. Dead. He stayed calm. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Anyways. Wow. Do you want to hint towards next week? Wow. Yeah, wow. Here it is. What is it? Can't remember. Nice.
Starting point is 00:31:58 Extended cut? Yeah, probably. Yeah, nice. If you don't want to see it early, you can. If you become a YouTube member or a Patreon member or a big sandwich member. They call it the Blade Runner of Podcasts. They do. 2049. Yeah. They call the Soldier of Podcasts. Oh no.
Starting point is 00:32:17 Yeah. Oh no. They call the Paul W.S. Anderson directed movie of podcasts. Oh, no. So sometimes it's good. Oh, no. Sometimes it's Soldier. Oh, no.
Starting point is 00:32:26 Sometimes it's a Resident Evil sequel. Oh, no. Yeah. But thank you so much to Ben for the edit. Thank you, Ben. God. Hell of a time. Did you like Blade Runner 2049?
Starting point is 00:32:35 I did. Thumbs up or thumb. Not you, Ben. I already know what you think. I was going to say because I said it earlier. Earlier in the week, you were pumping your fist in the air because you've got to, you got to rewatch Blade Road in 2040. I was holding off.
Starting point is 00:32:45 I was holding off. I've done it. Yeah. Yeah. All right, thanks, everyone. Grabbed our jam. You guys. We'll see you next week.
Starting point is 00:32:50 Goodbye.
