Jason and the Argonauts had the Skellington fight.
You better believe it.
Troy had Achilles versus Eric Banner.
Absolutely.
Gods of Egypt has a big snake or whatever.
It's got a bunch of snakes and men and...
Dog-headed people?
Dog-headed people, sure.
Iron man, bird suits.
Wings?
Yep.
Love it.
Gold blood.
Gold blood and blue eyes.
Blue like the sky itself.
So what we've been doing in the weeks leading up to this...
Yes.
...is exploring films that
Christopher Nolan used as inspiration for the Odyssey.
That's right.
So please leave a light because we're talking about gods of Egypt.
Now, I picked gods of Egypt.
As a joke.
No.
You did.
I have a real quote from Christopher Nolan.
Well, I have my personal conversations with you where you admitted this that we did it as a joke.
And we are justifying this afterwards.
He left a screening and he was heard muttering big men, big tall men.
The Odyssey does have some very big tall men.
How do they do it?
Mirrors?
Mirrors.
Actual big.
tall men? Big tall men and mirrors. However they did it in gods of Egypt? Probably that way.
It feels wrong. They did it the wrong way in this. Maybe like big styrofoam men?
Nolan would do big styrofoam men. Yeah, yeah, I think he would. On pulleys.
Yeah. Pullies and wheels and systems and cogs. But you informed me.
Yes.
Something actually Christopher Nolan related to the films of Alex Proyas, who of course directed this.
Christopher Nola has publicly cited Alex Proyce's sci-fi noir film from 1998. Dark
City as a direct influence on his own work.
From an interview in the Los Angeles Times, James, he said when talking about
Inception, I think ours is of an older school, ours is more of the matrix variety and
the concepts of different levels of reality.
When I first started trying to make this film happen, it was very much pulled from that
era of movies where you had the Matrix, you had Dark City, you had the 13th floor,
and to a certain extent you had Memento 2.
They were based in the...
Oh, he's drawing upon his own movie, is it?
Yes, he is.
Oh, he had Memento from that era as well, the movie I directed with Guy Piss.
Good movie.
Yeah, it is Christopher Nolan.
Don't need to bang on about it.
James, let me finish the quote.
Yeah, Memento, that's a great movie.
It's the best movie ever made.
Now, he said they were based in the principles
that the world around you might not be real.
Whoa.
So he, and now, what I would say,
Alex Proeus, of course, directed The Crow.
Greek.
Good movie.
Greek Australian.
That's so true.
Greek Australian.
But he also directed Dark City,
which came out in 1990s and was sort of, you know,
phenomenal movie.
It was lost in the wake of the Matrix
because they do cover.
similar themes.
If you're going to take away anything from this video,
one, watch Dark City
and two, watch the director's cut of Dark City
because the theatrical release
starts with a voiceover from Kiefer Sutherland
that reveals the twists and the secrets
that are going to happen in the movie.
In the dark city.
Like an hour before they happen in the movie.
Kiefer Sutherland is in the movie.
He didn't just hijack a voiceover voice.
He wasn't just doing Solid Snake
and he's like, you know what, I'll spoil this movie while I'm at it.
It would be like if you went in to watch The Matrix,
and it started with a voiceover from Lawrence Fishburn going,
yeah, you're going to see this guy called Neo,
and he thinks he's in the real world, but actually he's in a computer.
You know somebody had that idea, though, right?
To be like, just say it up top.
That's a spoiler for the Matrix, by the way.
Sorry, I spoiled the Matrix for you.
Do you think it spoils the fourth Matrix?
I guess it does.
It kind of does.
But anyway, you should watch Dark City.
It is a miracle any movie gets made,
and if you've got a movie made at all,
you should be proud.
And if you've got a movie as good as Dark City made,
you should be proud.
Anyway, time for 20 minutes of just dumping all over Gods of Egypt.
Yeah.
So I think there's a reason why this turned out the way it did, and we can talk about it.
Bad writing and bad directing?
Yeah, but...
Cinematography.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
There shouldn't be.
But director Alex Proyas, he was born in Egypt.
Oh, yes.
Like this movie.
To Greek parents, but moved to Australia when he was three.
And the idea for this was that Lionsgate thought that Gods of Egypt would be the first film in a new franchise.
after finishing the Hunger Games films,
which they haven't, by the way.
There's a new Hamich-Abanathi Prequel.
You can see what he's doing.
So bold.
Also, like...
In this era of Star Wars and Marvel and Fast and Furious?
Yeah.
To be like, yeah, this is the one.
And also to be like, okay, well, the Hunger Games has like
young people competing in these games for survival.
You know who's going to like that?
Young people.
Young people.
Go to the movies and buy tickets and buy DVDs at the time
and all this sort of stuff.
Young people.
You know who's going to love to.
this franchise, Egyptians,
white Egyptians, I guess.
I'm sure they're white Egyptians, Mason.
I bet there are.
You're actually, I think you're actually...
They're all in this movie.
They got every white Egyptian,
and they hired them all for this movie, I guess.
Do you want to do that now?
We can talk about it now.
It's such a...
Everybody's so white in this.
It's so strange.
Well, that's one of the strange things about this movie,
is that it's...
And it's, you know, it's myth and whatever.
Yeah, but they just got the...
It's not even that they got white people.
It's got some of the whitest people.
Osiris, the current ruler of the gods, is played by Brian Brown.
Insanity.
And I love Brian Brown.
I love Brian Brown also.
Have you seen FX?
Yes.
And maybe FX2, is he in that?
I haven't seen it, but yes.
Have you seen two hands?
Have you seen Cocktail?
Yes.
Have you seen a movie where he has to do an American accent, I think, maybe?
Sometimes.
Sometimes he does.
I feel like he's probably lesser known outside of Australia,
but Brian Brown is one of the most gidday.
there, boys, kind of blocs there is.
He's...
Fuck, man, he's so Aussie.
He's true blue, he's fair dinkum.
He's red dog.
He's red dog.
I don't know if he's in red dog, but he's red dog.
That's right.
Yeah.
He'd be the PM.
He'd be the Prime Minister of Australia if they let him.
Yeah.
But it's illegal.
He's in when Polly met Harry or whatever it's called.
What?
Ben Stiller and Philip Seymour Hoffman.
Along came Polly.
Oh, there it is.
And he's like a Aussie bloke in that.
Yeah.
Anyways.
But they've given him...
They've gone,
How do we make him Egyptian?
Little Soul Patch, I guess.
Egyptian.
Everybody's so just generically whatever.
I know.
Nikolai Costa Waldo, who is half of the main characters of this movie,
he's just in a tank top.
I would say he's two thirds because he's tall.
He is very tall.
But yeah, he is.
Yeah, he's just in...
He's solid snake, not to bring up Kiva Sutherland again,
but they've just dressed him as solid snake.
Yeah, yeah.
Big solid snake.
Big solid snake.
And again, the funny thing about the setup of this movie is that the gods are just bigger.
But they're not like 100 feet tall.
No.
They're like 10 feet tall.
Weird height.
And they just look like guys.
They haven't gone, okay, let's, I mean, they can, when budget allows, they can sort of
transform into like, you know, stylized Egyptian archetypes.
But mostly they're just guys.
And it's just, they're just walking around.
Yeah.
You know?
Walking around big.
Slightly bigger, I should say.
So yeah, they're nine feet or 2.7 meters tall.
But they're battle beast form.
Which is what it's called.
Yeah.
Are over 12 feet.
Wow.
I know.
And also it's not like,
they haven't given them like any Egyptian specific at the time.
Makeup.
They did.
Their costumes are just whatever, like party city, you know, generic togas and skirts and whatever.
Yeah, it's beautiful.
It's really good.
Like if they'd given him like, even in their, you know, more human forms,
if they've given them a sort of weird alien aspect or a different, you know, a timet.
a tint to themselves.
Stargate something.
Stargate something.
They're doing Egyptian stuff.
Give them a headdress or whatever.
But clearly they didn't want to commit to any of that.
They really did it.
So they're just tall guys.
Like you'd look at them from a distance and you go, are they regular sized guys?
And he'd be like, no, that guy's towering over that hot dog cart.
He's a bigger guy.
But who cares?
Who cares?
So they used force perspective and motion control photography to portray the distances in height.
Proyas called the logistical challenge.
a reverse Hobbit.
So it's basically what they did.
A Robert.
That's all they did in Lord of the Rings.
Yes.
Not the Hobbit because in The Hobbit,
they just used green screen or whatever.
They broke Ian McCallin.
So a lot of this is forced perspective.
Okay, sure.
But just it's...
The main force perspective is that I had to watch this today.
That's the number one forced perspective, from my opinion.
Wow.
Yes.
Why don't you cry about it in a video that goes for over 20 minutes, Mason?
Right now?
Yeah.
This would be sucked.
So the story of this.
Yes.
You mean why they decided to make this?
No, no, we'll sort of do that.
No, we did that already, I guess.
They wanted Hunger Games.
Yeah, they wanted Hunger Games with men.
Yeah.
Just regular men.
There's an extended opening where it's like, if you know the story of this,
and it's like, I don't.
I don't.
And also like...
The audacity to be like, you know this.
A couple of notes.
One, if they have to put a voice over in it,
it's because something went wrong with the filming.
and everybody found it very confusing to them
so they're just like, we have to voice over some of this.
Also, the voiceover is from an older version of the main,
the other main character.
Brendan Thwaites from Pirates of the Caribbean.
And Titans, and Titans, he's in Titans.
Oh, he is.
He's Dick Grayson and Titans.
But it's the main character retelling the story from the...
I'm old now.
So like, you know he can't die.
Yeah.
I guess unless at the end he's like,
and I'm telling the story from the afterlife,
because I did die, but he didn't die.
but he didn't die. His girlfriend dies
and he's like, oh well, I guess I'll just go to a god
and they'll fix this right up, actually.
But actually, the gods can't fix it up.
That's a big deal.
But it's also not because you immediately know
someone's going to snatch that bird out of the afterlife.
You know that's going to happen towards the end
because they're like, we definitely can't do it.
You just can, though.
You just can't.
Anyway, he's Aladdin.
He's Prince Daston from Prince of Persia.
So true.
He was in Pirates of the Caribbean for...
Yes, because they needed a replacement of Orlando Bloom.
So anyway, Brian Brown is ruling over Egypt.
Yeah, he's having a great time.
And he's like, listen, I got a surprise for everybody.
First off, I'm tall, probably to know unless you were standing next to me.
Second surprise, anybody can go to Egyptian heaven.
That's right.
It's freaking sick as brother.
And as one of the gods, famously petty, I say everybody can go to heaven.
Yep.
And my son, who's from Game of Thrones, he agrees.
And I have a brother, and he's Jerry Butler.
And he also agrees.
Always here.
That's right.
Also free hot dogs for everybody.
As you can see, the card is right here.
But then Jerry Butler's like, aha, actually, I'm going to kill you.
And then I'm going to become the ruler of the gods of Egypt.
The gods of Egypt.
And I say, you can only get into heaven if you give me cash.
Cash is king.
Cash is king.
So as a result of that, he kills Brian Brown.
Not in real life.
This is a fictional story.
Yeah, this is fictional.
This didn't really happen.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Takes the eyes of Game of Thrones.
Yes, that's correct.
Correct, yes.
And then a year passes.
And it's much of a muchness, I guess, because, like, you're only really affected by this if you die and you don't have any money on you.
Yeah.
But it doesn't, it's not really clear about how much you need to have.
More than a feather's worth.
Yeah, easy.
Yeah, easy, right?
Two feathers?
Yeah.
Two feathers?
Yeah.
It's worth more than one feather.
Just go to the bank before you die and go, can I have a loan more than a feather's worth of gold?
Also, how do you, I guess you get, in Egyptian mythology, you get buried with your money.
And then I guess you get a version of your money in heaven.
Yeah.
It's like an NFT.
Pre-afterlife.
It's NFT.
Does the money disappear from where you were buried?
Because you could just,
somebody else could just dig up that money and use it again.
No, no, no, no.
It's like unlimited money.
No, it's like an NFT.
Okay.
Where like if somebody owns the rights to that money but doesn't physically have it,
then you can't own that money again a second.
Okay.
So when I die and I'm in the pre-afterlife,
I'll show them a QR code on my phone that sends them a link.
Yeah, but you have to be buried with your phone.
I will be.
It's in my will.
Yeah.
And then they'll let you in
and you can turn into smoke
or whatever happens to you.
Oh, thank God.
I would love to turn into smoke.
Yeah, but Game of Thrones
he loses a big metal robot
morphing battle to Jerry Butler.
And then because he's got his eyes pulled out,
he can't turn back into a metal hawk man
except when he believes in himself
or Jeffrey Rush says he can.
Yeah.
The character Jeffrey Rush is playing.
Jeffrey Rush doesn't have that power in real life.
No, he does.
powers. He has other abilities. Yes. He does other things. He does other things. Yeah,
allegedly. Allegedly. Notoriously litigious is all I'm saying. Correct. But he has known to do other things.
It's so funny though that... Being a pirates movie. Yeah, that's one of them. Pirates
Caribbean four, among others. It's so funny that Jerry Butler is the uncle of Nicola Costa Walddow.
Because they look like they're the same age. He's one year older that. Yeah. I mean, you know, I guess
the gods are ageless unless you're Brian Brown or Jeffrey Rush. Or Jeffrey Rush.
Well, speaking of,
so Prince Daston does a Mario platforming level
to get one of his eyes back
and then makes a deal,
he goes, if you can get my girlfriend back from the afterlife.
Easy done, must be.
Easy done, you're big, you can do it.
I mean, I've never seen that happen in my real life.
Yeah.
Like if that would, a thing that could happen,
it would be happening all the time to my various friends and family, right?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Oh, my grandpa died, but it's all right,
I petition the gods and they just brought him back in his fine now.
That's right.
He works at that hot dog cart.
Right, but...
Next to Brian Brown.
Yeah, but he's so casual about it that his girlfriend was shot to death by Rufus Sewell,
who's in Dark City, by the way, brilliant.
That he's just like, yeah, bring him back.
You've never seen it happen before.
Yeah, but there's big men.
And in a world of big men, don't you think anything's possible?
Also, it is possible, he's right.
Yeah, he is right, but he gets over the death of his girlfriend during a scene transition.
Then he's fine, but anyway, so, yeah, so he's like,
I'll help you get your other eye back if you bring my,
girlfriend back later, I guess.
And he's like, definitely.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
But I can't transform into a hawkman
without my eye, within both my eyes.
And then Jeffrey Rush is like, you can though.
Yeah.
And he goes up and he visits Jeffrey Rush.
And Jeffrey Rush is Ra.
He's the sun or he looks after the sun.
He's the sun god because there's a snake called Apophis
who's a god of chaos.
And he's a June sandworm.
It is a June sandworm.
And Ra's job is to be like, back.
Back! Back, you beast.
Back.
Back your bloody mongrel.
Get back.
Right?
That's his job.
And if Rada were to die, then Apophis would be like, I'm taking everything over.
That's right.
I'm going to get my shadows and my tentacles and my teeth all over everything.
I'm going to ruin everything.
Mm-hmm.
But guess what?
What?
That's what Gerard Butler wants.
Because also, Jeffrey Rush's plan was to give this job to Jerry Butler.
Yeah.
And Jerry Butler's like, what, why would I want to, I want to live forever.
Well, you could live forever in the afterlife.
It's smoke.
I don't want to go down there.
I want to be cool and big.
And for everybody to give me their gold, but in the afterlife,
Yes.
So he wouldn't actually get any of that gold.
He's like, you need gold to go to the afterlife,
but then that gold goes to the afterlife.
Yeah, cool.
So you'd be in the regular world, Jerry Butler,
not getting any of that gold.
You must have got some of the gold, though.
Maybe he gets a QR code to the gold.
And he can just look at it and go,
yeah, that gold's mine in the afterlife.
If I would ever go there, which I won't,
because I'm going to live forever.
But his plan is to get various bits of the gods.
So he's got Brian Brown's heart,
and he's got Game of Thrones's eyes
and then he gets Chadwick Boseman RIP's brain
because Chadwick Bozeman's like
I'm the cleverest man, I'm the cleverest God who ever lived
I can answer all sorts of riddles
Except for this one.
You should only get one go to answer a riddle
Agree, the Sphinx should beat you up
In mythology when somebody's like
You can't pass my door unless you answer a riddle
You should get one go and if you can't answer one of us
One of us tells the truth
Is it you? No, it's the other guy then
Yeah, yeah, you're right.
You get one go and if you get it wrong you get squash flat.
Otherwise you could be like,
man,
the sky,
the beach,
tomorrow,
right?
And you just,
you can just say generic things.
While you're rolling out of the way.
Exactly.
Until he's like,
well,
you nailed it actually.
I did mean time.
So you got me,
I guess.
You said enough words.
I was going to say,
but his goal,
he's to get all the bits of all the gods
and become the biggest,
the most god.
And the wings of his,
ex-wife, I guess, and then he's going to become the ultimate god, and then he's going to
fight the son.
He's going to fight Jeffrey Rush.
He's going to kill Jeffrey Rush, and then Apophis is going to eat the afterlife, so then
he will become immortal.
That's the goal, right?
Which he also would be if he went to the afterlife.
Yeah.
Also, how long does he live in the regular world?
I know.
It's impossible to say because he's only a year older than his nephew.
That could happen.
Yeah.
There can be a gap.
Yeah.
Sure.
So there's action in this.
I don't know if we mentioned it.
There's a waterfall action sequence
which has little matrix moves.
I've written here, brackets, derogatory.
Yeah, I have a similar note.
Let me bring this up.
It says some 360 degree matrix bullet time effects
in the big 2016.
And I would have added derogatory also, yes.
But they jump off a waterfall and he uses his,
there's a lot of stick fighting to catch himself between the waterfall.
It's a hell of a sequence.
There is a moment where they fight two snakes.
And I think that looks better.
It doesn't always look bad.
But mostly it does.
I've got a note here also that said,
this looks great.
How does it look so great?
This movie.
Do you agree?
Are you being sarcastic?
Well, the film, this film,
and Mad Max Fury Road have almost 300 of the same cast and crew members.
That's true.
Including a first assistant director,
a visual effects supervisor,
some stunt members,
some of the actors.
Brendan Dwight's girlfriend is in it.
She's Cheeto.
That's right, yeah.
But the reason why it,
I feel it doesn't look as good as Mad Max or his previous films.
Because Proyas previously worked with Darius Wolsky on The Crow and Dark City,
but they had a falling out.
So he didn't work on this or knowing, I presume, in a movie which also isn't very good.
Darius, do you like big men?
Big men?
Do you look comically big men?
No, Alex Proyas, I don't.
Well, then we're officially having a falling out.
This is over between us.
Oh, yeah.
Man who only likes regular-sized men.
Ridic.
It's redick, Mason.
It is radick.
But anyway, they've got a plan to stop Jerry Butler with water or something, but it goes badly.
Oh, yeah, because Rari's like, here, have some of this, collect some of my water, it's fine.
And then, so they have to go to somewhere, they have to go to a underground bit.
And then, then Brenton Swait, Thwait, Prince Dustin.
He's like, I'm going to pour this water in and it's going to into this hole.
It's going to stop.
And it's going to lessen your powers.
And then Gerard Butler's like, what do you think about?
this, it's the necklace your girlfriend wore.
And guess what?
She died for real.
She died for real and you can't bring her back.
Well, then why would you not pour the water in the hole?
Yeah, why not? May as well.
May as well.
Yeah.
While we're here.
Give it a whirl.
I mean, if everything's hopeless and you can, you know,
get one over on old Jerry Butler.
What you're forgetting is that he also doesn't care about his girlfriend at all.
That's true.
He mostly forgets about her.
He's just on a rollicking, rocking adventure.
He's having a great time, yeah.
But yeah, so Jay Butts gets all.
his powers.
Yeah.
And he flies up to challenge Jeffrey Rush.
Sure.
So the nightworm is released.
Yes.
And then he does...
Worst possible, worst case scenario.
And down in the afterlife, things are going to shit.
Bruce Spence is judging the afterlife and he's like, something's gone awry here.
That's right.
I knew it was a guy.
It is Bruce Spence.
The gyrocopter man.
Yeah, man.
He's there.
And also, and then just shit's red.
You know what I mean?
Yeah.
That's because of the worm or whatever.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
But luckily,
does this feel like we're making it up as we go?
A little bit,
but Prince Dustin and Game of Thrones,
it's okay because they got a special bracelet from Electra
from Daredevil.
She's also in this.
And they go down to the underworld and they're like,
he's a precious bracelet.
You can put that on the scales
and that will be more than a feather's worth.
Heaps more.
So you can probably go to the afterlife.
And she's like,
I don't want to go to the afterlife without you, Prince Dustin.
Dustin.
Dustin.
Dustin.
Dustin.
Dustin.
Terrific.
Because of how Dustin he is in the stands of time.
Exactly.
Wow.
But then it's all right because they don't have to make that call
because like you said, the whole underworld's exploding or whatever.
That dog man's freaking out.
Dog man's there.
He's like, I can only hold the underworld together for so long
with my special powers and my stick,
which I normally use for fighting probably.
Now I don't know.
It's for magic.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Anyway, I'll be here.
You can do some stick fighting somewhere else.
If you can sort this somewhere else.
I'll do this.
Yeah.
plumber of the afterlife. Where's Kenny the toilet man? Where's Australian toilet enthusiast
Kenny who would be, he'd be, he'd be, he'd be, they'd be a big swirling vortex, he'd fix it.
They filmed this in Australia. Why didn't they put him in this? Yeah. He could be down there
in the underworld being like, they've blood of urinals. They didn't, they didn't. They didn't
film this in Egypt? No. Are you kidding me, Mason? I knew they didn't. But he gets his eye back.
Wouldn't you like Kenny in this movie? Yeah, absolutely. As the toilet afterlife guy.
It's a crappy job, but someone's got to do it. I'm Kenny. Yeah. You know, he's fixing the
toilets. Ozzy larrican.
Yes.
Yeah.
Good bloke.
Yeah, that's right.
So Rufus Sewell has to be in a fight in an elevator.
Oh yeah, because he is Brenton Thwaites' girlfriend's boss.
Yes.
He's an architect.
And shot her with an arrow.
And he shot her and he's also, he's also, uh, Jared Butler's like a spineless little
minion.
Yeah.
I'm going to build you a big tower, Jerry Butler.
I like this.
I like this and gold and people giving me gold in the afterlife that I'm not in.
Yeah.
And there's a moment where they're like, oh, this mortal guy, he's quite special.
Why is he so special?
I don't know, because no one stabs him.
They just throw him.
They do throw him.
That's why.
He's wearing that special.
And he's never landed bad.
He's wearing that special Egyptian plot armor.
Yeah, he's never landed like really hard on his head or like on his hip or his knee.
And he's like, ooh, this is going to put me out.
It's going to put me out for ages.
Ooh.
It was land somewhere soft.
And he's like, I'm fine actually.
That's right.
But anyway, Game of Thrones gets all these confidence back or whatever.
Yeah, yeah.
He's like, he gets Dorothy from Wizard of Oz.
He's like, my power was with me all along.
I was always Egyptian.
I can always turn it all bird, a big bird, a metal bird man.
I can do it.
I didn't need my eyes.
He's got sniper vision as well sometimes.
Yeah, sick.
Yeah, it's pretty cool, right?
Especially when he's got two eyes.
Yeah.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, pretty great.
So, yeah, he kills Jeffrey Rush, and they kill the dune worm.
And then the dog in the afterlife closes the portal.
So that's pretty good.
Yeah, and he kills Jerry Butler also.
Yeah, I said that.
Didn't I?
No, you said, I think you said Jeffrey Rush.
Yeah, well, I know.
He's alive.
Jeffrey Rush is just floating in space.
And they go get him.
Yeah, they go get him.
And he kills the June worm.
Yes, that's right.
But they kill Jerry Butler.
Jerry Butler's like,
oh, you remember, don't kill me.
Don't kill me because I showed you mercy.
And Game of Thrones is like, well, I'm not going to that.
Yeah, I'm fine.
Why would I though?
Yeah, I don't mind.
I've got this spear.
I've probably got two million dollars in this movie.
Yeah, yeah.
And he stabs him and he turns in a gold and fire and stuff.
Pretty cool.
Yeah, yeah.
And then Prince Dustin Dustin's girlfriend comes back to
life and he's like, I thought people
couldn't come back to life. And Game of Thrones
is like, well, she did.
No, nothing about like, oh, well, because the
amulet and the fire and the gates of
the after world. And this is a gift because of the
whatever. It's just like, I don't know. She just
did, I guess. Probably related to that
feather, but I don't actually know. Again, it sounds like we're making
up, or we missed a plot point or something.
And we might have. He's just, no, he's just like, yeah,
she did come back, though. I don't,
it shouldn't be possible, but it did.
Oh, and then he goes off to rescue his
girlfriend, who's electric.
Yes, who's in this, by the way.
We mentioned it, but she's around, isn't she?
It does feel...
They needed somebody to talk to while they walked through the underworld
or the pre-underworld or the pre-pre-underworld or whatever,
or just the desert or whatever.
She had to be there to be like,
you should respect this mortal guy
because he always falls in the correct way.
He does too.
The ending is very kind of superhero code
and there's a lot of that in this.
It's like, well, people are doing an Ironman.
Why can't this...
This guy's job is now to look after Egypt or whatever
with Brendan Thwaites.
And Game of Thrones is like, I'm the king of Egypt now, and I say, you can go to heaven if you're good and nice.
You don't even need a feather or whatever the rule was.
Yeah, that's right.
Yeah, we're retiring the feather.
We're retiring a feather and we're firing Bruce Spence.
Yeah, we're keeping the dog.
He's going to hell.
He's going to Christian hell because we don't need him anymore.
We've made an exception for him.
He's going to Christian hell.
Yeah, that's right.
And they're going to treat him badly because he's a weird dog man also.
We're an old thing.
We don't know.
He's older than me.
He's 57.
He's yuck.
Let's get rid of him.
Yeah.
The dog man gets to stay because dogs can't go to heaven.
We all know that.
That's so true, isn't it?
Where would we even put him?
Yeah.
Yeah.
What a movie.
What a movie.
I don't really have any more miscellaneous notes except one that says,
I love Gerard Butler's big beetle helmet.
So remember he's surrounded him.
He's sort of chariot with a beetle?
And he's like, well, I better accessorize because I'm being pulled by a beetle.
Yeah.
So we're my big beetle helmet.
Makes sense to me.
Maybe the Beatles don't respect you.
you unless you look like a beetle.
That's like the real Beatles.
Yeah, so true, isn't it? Yeah.
Anyways, it's time for trivia of Egypt.
I love it.
This is a trivia section of the show.
Terrific.
Where I look into things too much for a movie I didn't like, but I kind of liked it
because it's nonsense.
But you gotta get all the trivia out there because otherwise people are like,
you forgot a trivia.
Here's one.
This film features no Egyptian actors.
Did you know that?
I did notice that upon the watching of the movie.
Yes, I did.
In response to the criticisms of its casting, director Alex Proyas and Lines
Gates issued apologies in late November 2015 for not considering diversity.
Lionsgate said it would strive to do better.
Yeah, I feel like you could have chucked a couple in.
Yeah, one or two.
Yeah.
It's fine, right?
Yeah.
I don't think there's a lot of Egyptians in Australia who they'd give the opportunity to act.
But also like, if they're like, well, actually, there wouldn't be enough star, there's
nobody with, there's no Egyptian actors with enough recognizability and star power.
It's not going to help this.
No.
Right?
It didn't, putting Jeffrey Rush and Brian Brown didn't help this.
No, Game of Thrones did nothing for this movie.
Maybe put some unknowns in it.
It would have done the same.
Chadwick Bowes.
This movie's really boring also.
It's a boring movie. Did you notice?
It was just stick...
It was just stick-fighting and walking across just
boring CGI desert background.
Yep.
Nothing happens in it.
Not even Gerard Butler's Big Beetle helmet
could save...
No, you came to life at that moment.
I saw it in your eyes.
Yeah, that's true, actually.
Yeah.
Chad Boceman said
I'm thankful that they did apologize
And did nothing
They made amends by doing nothing
That's why I wanted to do it
So you could see someone of African descent
Playing Thoth
Who the father of mathematics astronomy
And the god of wisdom
Actor Game of Thrones said
A lot of people are getting really worked up online
About the fact that I'm a white actor
I'm not even playing an Egyptian
I'm playing an eight foot tall god
Who turns into a falcon
A part of me just wants to freak out
But then I think
There's nothing you can do
about it. You can't win that sort of discussion.
Don't worry about it. Nobody cares about this movie.
That's fine. Yeah.
This is fun. In the film, the father of Osiris and set is referred to as Ra, but in
Egyptian mythology, it's actually Geb.
Geb? Yeah.
Okay. That's more of an Australian name too.
Absolutely. Gebo.
Gebo.
Yeah. Gebo. What you're doing up there, Gebo?
Fighting Epophis, the serpent of chaos.
Nah, good on you, mate. Nah, good on you.
The director cited the following films as influence of gods of Egypt.
The Guns of Navarone, Lawrence of Arabia, the man who would be king, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Sergio Leone's Western films.
Well, let me tell you, you can see all that on the screen.
Just kidding.
In their own movies.
Yeah, absolutely.
That's right.
Lionsgate's Summit's production budget for this was only about $10 million because they were able to recoup most of the budget by international presales and Australian tax incentives.
Great.
We paid for this.
Yeah.
Typical.
We could have put it towards more tin.
for the nation.
Absolutely.
I'm on this shit instead.
Right?
Would you have liked more tinnies for the nation?
I would have loved more tinnies, James.
Both the frothy and the little boat you put on the, you go down the river in.
Absolutely.
It's also called a tini.
Catch a barracuda.
Yeah.
Throw back a carp.
You can't eat them.
That's right.
More, they should have taken this money.
They should have made more big novelty roadside attractions.
Big koala.
Yep.
Big worm.
Big Jeffrey Rush.
I don't know about that.
Big Jeffrey Rush.
I don't think we could have that right.
Big Jeffrey Rush.
Let's not have him running around.
Fine.
No, he's nailed to a blanket wood or something.
He's nailed to some very sturdy foundations.
You know he's going to be swiping at people, though?
He'd be swiping, yeah.
Yeah.
Anyways.
Big Kenny.
Big Kenny. I'm okay, I'm okay with that.
Big toilet.
Big toilet.
Box office for this on a budget of $140 million.
Too much money?
Yeah.
Mostly paid by us, the Australian taxpayer.
It made $1,000.
50.6. Not enough money.
Also, like, shocking that it made that much money.
I looked at the box office as I was on my way here, and I'm like,
a lot of blockbuster movies nowadays would love to make as much as $150.50.
As much as $150 million.
It's crazy that people will...
Just people off the street around the world were like, let's go and see gods of Egypt.
A movie about big white men.
You had seen this, though, right?
Yeah, I had seen this.
When? How? I don't know when it came out, I guess.
At cinemas?
We were in superhero fever.
I'm like, what about a big man who turns into a big falcon and his friends with a dog man?
I don't think they're friends.
And they've got to open a portal or close a portal or something or go through a portal.
It does have a lot of that superhero stuff in it, doesn't it?
Yeah, it does. Beams of light.
Yeah.
Big snakes.
Mm-hmm. You know?
Pirates of the Caribbean, guys.
Morphing into a thing.
Yep.
Suiting up.
Suiting up scenes.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Gods of Egypt, 2016.
All suit up.
scenes on YouTube probably
exists. You know?
Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah.
Anyways, you know we do early videos?
So true, isn't it?
These three places. Big Sandwich.com, Patreon.com
slash Mr. Sunday movies, or you can become a YouTube member.
But there's also bonus videos on whatever. I'm sick of listing it.
You can figure it out, all right?
All right.
I'm sick of being in this video.
But speaking of, here's a hint towards next week.
Oh, is it?
We're doing decreasingly good movies that mix live action and
animation.
Hazzar!
We're going to start at a real high,
then we're going to end on a real low.
Terrific.
I love the sound of that.
Yeah, cool.
We also have a podcast that's called
The Weekly Planet.
We're going to be talking about the Odyssey,
aren't we?
That's right.
Big men.
Big men.
Can't wait for the behind the scenes.
Did he use styrofoam?
Did he use angles?
Yeah.
You know?
Did you do a reverse hobbit or whatever
like this movie?
That's right, maybe.
Maybe that movie looks as good as this movie.
I mean, we can only hope.
I can't wait for it to make $150.
Me too.
Thank you so much to Lawrence for the
Thank you, Lawrence.
See on the next one.
Grabbed our gemmy, guys.
We'll see next week.
In the afterlife.
There's a dog man there.
He'll let you in.
Dogman afterlife.
It could just be like,
oh, what have I got worth more than a feather?
Anything on me.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
I could sing a song.
That's worth more than a feather.
Yeah, this phone.
Hey, true.
This phone, it's a couple of years old.
It needs a battery replacement.
It's worth more than a feather.
That's what I'm saying.
You wouldn't give up your phone.
I would not.
I'm taking it with me.
