Starting point is 00:00:00 Did you know a six film series is referred to as a hexology or a sex tete? Wow, that's witchy and sexy. Is it? Yes. You found that sexy? Yep. The word sex was in there. That is sexy.
Starting point is 00:00:13 That's what I'm saying. Fua. Fooah. All right. All right. Yeah, hell yeah, brother. Well, there's a bit of that in this movie because, of course, we're doing all... No, there's not.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Well, you know, there's like partially nude people and a woman running around in a blue boob tube top. I guess if you got a wee. fetish, which is every Resident Evil fan. Exactly. You know. Which is us because we love these movies. Do we? No, Mason.
Starting point is 00:00:37 What's going on? I don't know. What a weird start? Will we start again? No. Please leave a like for Resident Evil Apocalypse. What an era, 2004. An era where you could only purchase and fire guns in pairs.
Starting point is 00:00:50 Did you know that? That was the law. If you wanted to fire one gun at a time, you needed a special permit. Thanks, Obama. I know, right? He got a Sydney in the end. Yeah. So this movie starts with a real.
Starting point is 00:01:00 recap of the first movie. And thank God, because I had forgotten. Immediately, yeah. It's also, of all the movies, it's probably the one that adheres closest to the games because it's basically games two and three, more three. They're like, well, we didn't really do much Resident Evil stuff aside from dogs.
Starting point is 00:01:16 Exactly. Wet dogs, weird red, wet dogs. I mean, they are back, aren't they? The weird, red, wet dogs. There's a lot of things that are back. But this one, they finally decided to just do a Resident Evil, which I'm appreciative of. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:01:28 This is a better movie. I don't know what the do. general consensus among the RE community is, the religious education community, and the residential evil community, but I thought this was better than the first one, way better than the first one. It's not good, it's stupid. Everybody in this movie is engaged in some sort of competition to out-cool each other, but they're trying to out-cool each other by the standards of the time, so they're not cool. Dork stuff is what you're saying. Dork stuff. Just nobody wears a trench coat, but they're like, they're spinning their trench coats, you know what I'm talking about?
Starting point is 00:01:57 Absolutely. Look, I think, yeah, this is obviously. a bigger movie, but I think it's too action heavy and it's not really... Oh, too action heavy. Not enough puzzles for you? Not enough turning a little dial with symbols on it. It's not creepy or tense. I mean, there's a moment where a motorcycle gets flung into a church and then up a wall and into a... Hell yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:18 And, you know, that's kind of where we're at. I mean, it's not just... Not just anybody is flinging that motorcycle. It's Alice from previous movie. Popular character Alice. Yeah, yeah, yeah. What I love about that sequence is, first she just cracked. A motorcycle through a church stained glass window, you know, she could have hit a priest.
Starting point is 00:02:36 You never know? She doesn't know what's in there. This is an RE movie. This is a religious education movie. That's true, isn't it? But then she drives it into one of the liquors and then... Two guns? Two guns?
Starting point is 00:02:49 Two thousand... Just machine. The bike and it blows up and it's like... And then the next thing, they're just hurriedly walking. Yeah. Could have hung on with that bike for a little bit longer, I reckon. Maybe don't blow up the bike. I mean, later, she just shot guns.
Starting point is 00:03:00 of one of those liquor's heads off. So you didn't need to blow up the bike. It's all aura. You idiot. You stupid idiot. You stupid 2004 looking cool idiot. Swinging your trench coat about. Do you remember the trailer for this?
Starting point is 00:03:12 One of the teas in particular was like for a fake beauty product. It's like, use the T virus and live forever and you can be young. Oh yes. And maybe you'll turn into a zombie. No, yes. What if you don't? Side of faces include turning into a zombie. Turning into a zombie.
Starting point is 00:03:25 That's the ad, yeah. So it was... I can imagine it. I don't remember it. but I can imagine it perfectly. That was a huge trailer. It got 8.5 million downloads between November and May. And that's when there were only 8 million people in the world.
Starting point is 00:03:38 Exactly. So everybody saw it, basically. Those are big numbers for internet back in 2003 to 2004. God, you had to wait so long for it to load. Oh, my God. Oh, Apple trailers, God. Oh, we miss you, though, don't we? God bless you and we miss you.
Starting point is 00:03:51 That's right. So anyway, Raccoon City is here and it's in the news. And the news is everything's good. Everything's fine. Sure, there's a bit of a heat wave, but pollen is low. This is good. That's good.
Starting point is 00:04:02 There's no underground facility. Pollin's very low. Just inhale anything. Any weird gases? Any weird gases or spools that you have in your vicinity? Just inhale them. Feels good. Feels good.
Starting point is 00:04:13 So this all happens in between Alice getting captured and then waking up at the end of the last movie. And so scientists, they open up the hive and they go, oh, there's a bunch of Resident Evil in here. And now it's getting out. Oh, that's good for us. Did you notice the little? Oh, my God. The return of my favorite character from Resident Evil. one, the arm-mounted laptop, but this time it's got a crisp white finish.
Starting point is 00:04:33 Yes. The new 2004 season of arm-mounted laptops. It's smaller and it's sleaker. It's not smaller. The white's giving you the illusion that it's smaller, but it's bigger, if anything. I want to apologise, Mason. Thank you. A bit that I thought was hilarious in this is there's a police bullpen kind of scene
Starting point is 00:04:51 and it's cops arresting people who are clearly zombies. Yeah, how do you get them this far? Did you arrest them outside the police station? Because they would have bitten you by now. Yeah, and they're just like, ah, ma-m-h-h-h-h-h-h-ha-ma-ma-ma-ha! Can't sir? Sir. Calm down.
Starting point is 00:05:06 You need to sign this form, sir. But then, of course, we get Jewel Valentine dressed just like the game. There's a little thing for the fans. That's right, yeah. It's impractical as the day is long, but we love it. Sweater tied around the waist? I guess so. Crazy.
Starting point is 00:05:20 I guess the idea is she was undercover or something? Well, people have speculated, and I think I saw this on Reddit, that she was in a hurry. So she just threw on... Oh, threw on whatever. The outfit from Resident Evil that she wears. That's right. I was playing Resident Evil too, and I'm like,
Starting point is 00:05:35 well, that's a fun outfit. I could emulate that. Get ready with me. So there's an article that reads Stars operative Jill Valentine and others are on temporary suspension after a mission in the Arquay Mountains, which refers to the mansion thing
Starting point is 00:05:48 from Resident Evil. So that's, I guess, canon from this... Not the mansion thing from the movie, the mansion thing from the games. Yeah, umbrella's obsessed with acquiring these mansions. Stop getting mansions. What about the little people? Let us have some mansion.
Starting point is 00:06:00 Give us a mansion. Give us a golf course. I guess that explains why she just comes in and starts headshoting zombies immediately. The police are like, you can't do Jill Valentine. You're out of order. You're what about procedure and forms? Where are your forms? Where are your headshot forms, Jill Valentine?
Starting point is 00:06:16 I don't need a mom too cool. I'm cold also. Bang, bang, bang. Because this is shot in Canada. I'm cold. I'm so cold in this. So Paul W.S. Anderson declined to return for this. particular sequel. He was prepping for Alien versus Predator. A good movie we both like,
Starting point is 00:06:33 set in an underground ice pyramid. I don't think it is a good movie. That we both like. We do like it. Yeah. But he did stay on as a, the dog's here. It's not a resident evil dog, though, everybody. Regular dog. Regular dog. Not covered in barbecue sauce. Well, sometimes she's covered in barbecue sauce. When you cover her in barbecue sauce and let her run around like a resident evil dog. As a prank to ruin your house. Yeah, it's working too. But he did stay on as a producer because of after what happened to the Mortal Kombat series. Oh, Annihilation, crap. Bad movie, no good.
Starting point is 00:07:02 But Alexander Witt comes on to director. Now, this is his first time directing a big movie, big director. Oh, yes. But he did a lot of second unit directing. Here are some of the movies that he worked on. Speed, Inspector Gadget, Daredevil, Gladiator, She's the Man, Terminator Genesis, Bird Box. So just whatever.
Starting point is 00:07:21 Just a real grab bag there. What a mix. And it's interesting also that he's. got work after this. Congratulations. Doesn't always happen when you make a terrible sequel to a terrible movie. Oftentimes that's it. You get put in director jail, but good on him for
Starting point is 00:07:37 clawing his way out, Bain's style. So, uh, he also worked on the Mission Impossible movies. And you can tell, because Odette Fair is in this movie and his introduction is doing a big Mission Impossible out of a helicopter. That's right. So we've got parallel... How many guns? Mason, he's got two guns. He's got two guns. So there's kind of parallel stories happening. Two or three at any one time?
Starting point is 00:07:59 Jared Harris is also in this. Jared Harrah! Jared. Jerry, Jarza, Hazer. There he is wearing these teeny weeny little glasses that he got from his daughter's little dolly or something. Teeny weeny whiny glasses. You can't look at anything with your peripheral vision with teeny weeny little glasses on.
Starting point is 00:08:15 Would you say slubbing it? I don't think he'd firmly established himself as a Hollywood presence yet. But no, he was doing the standard British actor thing of being literally anything. But hating all the things that he said. all the things he's in. But then, you know, if he'd done one of these later in his career, yes, 100% slumming. Yeah. But he's in a Jerry Harry
Starting point is 00:08:33 because his daughter is caught in the Resident Evil. She's stuck at the school. And he's like, but I'm in a different Resident Evil currently. How do I help her? Yeah. I'm in the big, the glass room Resident Evil currently. Which is fine now. Yeah, for now.
Starting point is 00:08:45 It's good at the start of a Resident Evil. Exactly. But she's out in the streets tipped over car Resident Evil. Yeah, yeah. How do I get her out of that Resident Evil? Well, you call in some guys from a third Resident Evil. And you get them to, you bribe them and you blackmail them and you're like, I'll help you get out of the city if you help my daughter out of her Resident Evil.
Starting point is 00:09:04 That's right. And they're like, Jared Harris, we're in a Resident Evil right now. We don't have time for your Resident Evil. Which Resident Evil are you in? Well, I'll tell you what, I don't have any dual gun wielding situations happening right now. But if you'll get to wheel all the, you'll get to dual wield all the guns you like, you help my daughter out of her Resident Evil. And they're like, we'll do it.
Starting point is 00:09:21 We'll do what we love it. Apparently Miller Jovovich, I saw this on IMDB and Mother. websites. She was disappointed with this film because the studio made her more actions in explosion and there was less story. I couldn't confirm any of that. I don't, I think the action in this is, it's all right for the most part. I think it is all right. I think the zombie stuff is way better. Agreed. Like, then they trained them up more and the makeup is better and, you know, they got contacts in for the ones you see up close. There's a shambling to them which I enjoy. Good shambling and a rambling. Gary shambling. I was also thinking Gary shambling. I was thinking,
Starting point is 00:09:55 Gary Shambling. Parallel thoughts. Exactly. The bit where they come out of the grave. That's fun. It's a throwback to like Night of Living Dead or whatever. I guess it could just get in the dirt can it? The T-Virus could just do and be anything on anyone and whatever. Or it can give you superpowers.
Starting point is 00:10:11 Alice has superpowers now. Lucky. So lucky. And mind powers, maybe? She's got mind powers and that's only the start of her various T-virus loaded powers. She's got the biggest jumps I've ever seen. That is actually quite a big impressive jump. You know when she's fighting Nemesis for the first time. Yeah, over that fence.
Starting point is 00:10:27 Over the fence. What are you Super Mario Brother? What are you a Super Mario Mario, Mario, the best Mario? The best Mario. I didn't realize that she got superpowers so quickly in these movies. I thought it was a gradual evolution, but it's just like, T-virus. There it is. Mike Epps is also in this. He's
Starting point is 00:10:45 doing his own story. He's providing the much needed comic relief. And he's got his legally mandated two guns. He went to the shop and he's like, can I just have one gold-plated desert eagle? And they're like, no, no, no, no. We don't have a form for that. Yeah. Come on, man.
Starting point is 00:10:58 Just take two and throw one away. I don't think any of the comedy really lands here. He does say GTA motherfucker at one point. And then he says 10 points, which I don't think is a GTA thing. Also, there's no, I mean, you get dollars, don't you? But I mean, there's no way that GTA would give you as low as $10. No, absolutely not. Not for running over a guy.
Starting point is 00:11:18 You get more points for that. Or getting a go-garunger or whatever it's called. You better believe it. Remember those fellas? Sort of. Yeah. Anyway, Eric Mabius is back, or is he? Mabius.
Starting point is 00:11:29 Sort of. So, nemesis is in this. Yes, good. Which is a big part of Resident Evil 3, except he doesn't have the tentacles, because that was harder to do. He's got a two-guns situation, obviously. Of course he does. But they're two different guns. Could I please just have one gun?
Starting point is 00:11:44 No nemesis. You know the rules. Two guns, nemesis. You know better than anybody. There's a moment where they're like, let's see what this nemesis is really capable of. And he just mows down a bunch of stars guys. And I'm like, I could have done that. With that gun?
Starting point is 00:11:56 Yeah. I mean, assuming I had lifted, I probably just put it on a... Apparently, it was quite heavy. Yeah, I could, but I mean, you know... You could? I'm just saying, I could. It'd be really easy. How's he going to get these guys?
Starting point is 00:12:06 I don't know. Just thousands of bullets. I probably could get like six guys with thousands of bullets. You're missing something here, though, because he does it so specifically... And he doesn't kill Mike Epps. He does a Terminator 2 situation. You know, when he's... Well, I would have got Mike Epps.
Starting point is 00:12:20 For funsies. For funds, yeah, absolutely. So there's also a ticking clock situation in the... this movie, which also happens in games two or three, where they're going to blow up Toronto, Raccoon City. It is. Because, you know, you've got to contain this virus, and this will do it. It's not like we're going to get into the next movie in the world's a complete desert.
Starting point is 00:12:39 No. That's not going to happen. Not going to happen. And even if it does, that's unrelated. Probably because people use too many of those, you know, there's styrofoam McDonald's containers. Are they? And that was too late.
Starting point is 00:12:49 It's too late for us. Absolutely. It's not our fault. None of this is our fault. We didn't do it. No. We didn't do it. We didn't do it.
Starting point is 00:12:56 We recycle. It's not our fault. I use those big can machines. I hate it, but I do it. Sure. Because I want $4.70 worth of can money. You know what the problem with this movie as well? Go on.
Starting point is 00:13:07 I don't think there are any problems with this movie. I had a great time. It's not good. Once again, it's not good. And everybody's trying really hard to be cool. And it doesn't work anymore. Because cool is the most ephemeral thing, right? You can't just be like, I'm cool forever.
Starting point is 00:13:19 One year, it's a poor mescal. And now we look at Paul Mescal and we go, yuck. Yacko. Yeah. Which beetle is he in that upcoming Beatles biopic? Paul McCartney. Correct. He sucks.
Starting point is 00:13:30 Yeah. I don't know. He's as good as Eddie. He's as good as any of the Beatles. He's a list of all their crimes. You can go through this later. Yeah. We don't have time.
Starting point is 00:13:40 Yeah, in your own time. But the problem is that I know who's going to die in this movie just by looking at them. Like even the people who get bit, I'm like, well, guys from the mummy. You know, that's not going to happen. And we know, because we're from the future. We know he's in one of the sequels. Oh, yeah. I do also know that.
Starting point is 00:13:56 But also, James, as Mr. Christopher Nolan has told us recently, just because you can spot the tropes doesn't mean they're bad. They're inherently bad, James. No, man. It doesn't mean they're inherently bad, James. No, it just means there's no tension about who's going to live or die. That's actually right. And even though Christopher Nolan is a big defender of this movie, apparently.
Starting point is 00:14:16 He loves it. I still think that that's not on. Like, I knew that reporter was going to get eaten by children. I hadn't seen this movie in 40 years. And I still knew that was going to happen. Embarrassing way to go out, by the way. I just had a dream that one day I'd leap over a car, leap over a fence and then leap over a car.
Starting point is 00:14:31 And then I made Inception. Did you? Yes. I like that bit with a big mirrored door that you did. I know you see GI in that scene, Christopher Nolan, you liar. That was my second unit director. I don't ever know what that is. Anyway, goodbye.
Starting point is 00:14:43 Dogs in school is good? Dogs in school is good. I don't know if you remember, but when you're in private school, if a dog ever got into the school, oh my God, the day, the day you would have. Mayhem. It's all anybody you'd be talking about.
Starting point is 00:14:55 I still remember the days the dogs go into the school. I used to teach, right? Sometimes a dog would get into the school. Okay, well, now it's a little sad. He's still reminiscing him over the time and dogs got into the school. Yeah, man, it's cool when a dog gets into the school. Yeah, he's lost it.
Starting point is 00:15:05 There's gone. Dog came into the studio before. I think it made a big difference. It'll liven up the place. That'd have a barbecue sauce over all the equipment. Bit of energy. That is energetic. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:15 So there's a double reveal also that not only is Alice infected, but in a good way. Yeah, that's right. The little girl is infected and also in a good way. Yes. She's also invincible or whatever. I don't know if she has any of the mind powers. Maybe they were going to do something with that in the future.
Starting point is 00:15:29 They don't. They kill her off in between movies. We'll talk about it. But you know what it's time for? What's the time for? The time for when Alice runs through and all the glass explodes and she's being shot at by a minigone. It's Mesao's Minut.
Starting point is 00:15:41 What do you think? Pretty cool. I like that the barrel was on the bottom. Yep. It had six barrels, traditional for a minigone. Lots of bullets. Yep. Glass.
Starting point is 00:15:51 Good, good. running and glass, real effect? You don't see any of their stars guys get chewed to pieces by it though, so zero out of ten. Zero out of ten for this minute, everybody! Zero to ten, sorry, everyone. How do you feel about at the end when Eric Mabius is forced to fight Alice to see who's better? Who has made better use of the Resident Evil powers? I don't know, maybe the one who looks normal and can talk, and you can like reason with?
Starting point is 00:16:14 And she's got telepathy and telekinesis and she can do a big jump. I mean, he can also do a big jump, but it didn't seem as elegant, did it? Yeah. And he did the big jump over the fence and he landed on the car and he crushed the car. It's embarrassing. Maybe he could lose a few Nemesis pounds if you know what I'm talking about. Whoa, got him, Mason, got him big time. I mean, yeah, it's cool he's got a rocket launch for an arm or whatever.
Starting point is 00:16:36 But he's still as conflicted as Alice is. He has a remember who you are moment. That's right. You know? I'm Eric Mabius. Maybe that hair I had? I remember. My 2002 hair?
Starting point is 00:16:45 Jelled up. I could have had it all. He did. He was on Ugly Betty. I looked it up. Nice. A main character? Yeah, he was ugly Betty's love interest or whatever happens in that show.
Starting point is 00:16:55 Normal Harry. Yeah. Great. Again, absolute coward move. I've said this before in that show to not hire an actual hideous person. Correct. Yeah. It's a beautiful woman.
Starting point is 00:17:04 You think I can't tell? Come on, man. I kind of think you can't tell. I can't. I had to tell you afterwards. You did. But luckily Alice, you can defeat him because she's got a big kick powers. Oh, and Ian Glenn's here.
Starting point is 00:17:16 That's right. His Game of Thrones and Batman sometimes. Sometimes he's Batman. Do you remember when he was Batman? Yes. I mean, he was legally distinct Batman. They couldn't say, this is Batman. It is funny to me making Jared Harris act like a zombie. Again, British guys will do anything but hate everything they're in.
Starting point is 00:17:32 I think that's the perfect example of that. Just a guy who would go on to get thrown off a waterfall by Robert Downey Jr. He has to do this, that's right. That's great. And they block the city. Yep. And it gets blamed on Jill Valentine. Jill Valentine.
Starting point is 00:17:46 She did some of the nuclear reactor. Yeah. Probably kicked it threw a sweater into it threw a sweater into it Did a spin kick Two guns maybe Two guns
Starting point is 00:17:57 Maybe And Alice is captured And she wakes up in a tub And she's like Where are my memories again We've done this already And then she remembered that And she was like
Starting point is 00:18:04 Okay I've still got my memories I'm doing karate I was just fooling I was just fooling I remembered But I mean it's the bad guy's fault Isn't it They're like
Starting point is 00:18:11 Do you remember anything It's like I do actually Yeah If I hadn't said that Yeah She wouldn't have remembered anything A goddamn thing
Starting point is 00:18:18 But she's got power was now including making people's eyes blade, which is, um, maybe that'll come up in a future movie. I don't, she'll saw a clone. I think we mentioned that last week, but I think that's important to remember for the reveal of the very last movie. Is she a clone currently? Yes. Okay. But I don't know, but yes. Okay, terrific. But I do know she's rescued by her team. Yes. And that's good. How many of those people return for the next one? I think all of them, I don't know of Mike Epps. Is Mike Epps in the next one? Couldn't tell you. Couldn't tell you either. Couldn't tell you for a million dollars. Can I have a million dollars?
Starting point is 00:18:50 No, I don't want to do that. That's smart because I couldn't tell you. Mm-hmm. But you know what I think it is? Yes. I don't know if there's a big memorable moment in this one. We always say there's a distinct standout moment. Is it running down a building?
Starting point is 00:19:03 Yeah, it is that. Of the two things... It's good. It's a good stunt. If we have, as we say, there's one, two or three memorable moments in these movies that make you want to trick you into seeing the sequel, because you go, I remember that. And mine are the motorcycle through the church window
Starting point is 00:19:17 and the abselled down the building, and then she kicked some guys. What about the knife stuff? Impressive, memorable? I can take a live of the knife stuff. All right. Okay. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:19:25 It's not distinct enough for me. Well, it worked on you the last time, didn't it? Worked on you back in the day in 2004 to 2006, didn't it? I think this is the only one I didn't see in cinemas. I was like, nah. I think my brother, the one you don't like, hired it. And I kind of sort of watched it, and I'm like, I don't like this. And I still don't really like it, if I'm honest.
Starting point is 00:19:42 You watched it through the front window of his house. Yes, that's right. Where he watched it with his happy family. That's right. So they actually nute that little girl, like in Aliens to Alien 3. Oh. The novelization of Resident Evil Extinction, it gives some insight stating that Alice... Did you read this?
Starting point is 00:19:58 No. No, I confirmed it, though, through the Rezi Wiki. Okay. Alice killed Angela while under Umbrella's control. Oh, no. So, but none of that's in the movies, I think. Already is, I don't know. Yeah, back in the, these days you can kill a kid in a movie.
Starting point is 00:20:12 Absolutely. People love it. Do it for fun. Yeah. But back in the day, people would have frowned on that. Yeah. You know, really would have soured people on the idea of Alice's, you know, likable protagonist that she is. That she is.
Starting point is 00:20:23 Very likable. Very big jumps. Big jumps. What's not to like? You ever seen someone do a big jump and then go unlikable? Maybe that guy who knocked the pole vault bar off with his don't. Oh yeah. No, that made him likable, I think.
Starting point is 00:20:37 To some. Yeah. I don't like him. Okay. It's not because I'm jealous. It seems like you're jealous, honestly. And it was the time for Resident Evil. A truce.
Starting point is 00:20:46 Rivkalypse. Love it. According to Paul W.S. Sanderson's commentary for the DVD, rapper slash actor Snoop Dog was chosen for the role of LJ, but he left the project, probably to do a Starsky in Hutch or whatever he was doing. Probably smoked one of those dubies his famous for and just walked off the set. Oh, no. I know, right? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:21:08 One of the zombies that gets a knife thrown in the head is Evervescence guitarist Ben Moody. Ben Moody was there? Yeah. Wow. Your fan? Was he on the, was Evanescence on the soundtrack or something? I don't know, but it was 2004, so Daredevil, etc. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:21:23 I don't know. What's he doing, slumming it as an extra in Resident Evil Apocalypse? Couldn't tell you, couldn't tell you. He's just there for fun. Couldn't tell you for for a million dollars. Probably smoked one of his dupies, his favour for and wandered on to set and was cast in the movie. I don't like that, Mason. No drugs, yeah.
Starting point is 00:21:37 Or like Ben Doobie. What? Yeah. Is that why they call him? That's why they call him Ben Doobie Moody. I didn't know that. So this was originally called Resident Evil. Nemesis, but then Star Trek Nemesis bombed.
Starting point is 00:21:49 So they were like, let's not. Must have been the name. Yeah, it must have been. Not the quality of the movie. Yeah, and not because Tom Hardy ruined that movie, in my opinion. Uh-oh. That's a good movie other than the fact that Tom Hardy is in it. Absolutely, that's right.
Starting point is 00:22:00 One negative to it, Mr. Tom Hardy. Yeah. So Eric Mabius was due to reprise his role. It's not really an apocalypse. I mean, it is if you live in Raccoon City. It's building towards the apocalypse. Well, that's what they should have called it. President and Evil building towards an apocalypse.
Starting point is 00:22:15 But still come and see this one. It's still worth saying. Yeah. There's a motorcycle bit. I think outside of Raccoon City, you'd be like, huh. Hmm. You know? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:22:23 I don't care. That's right. Eric Mabius, he was due to reprise his role from the first film because they were going to do the matte metamorphosizing into Nemesis. Absolutely. Except he had to pull out because he was busy. Ugly Betty? Yeah, and he ran out of gel.
Starting point is 00:22:37 And he went, I can't be seen like this with his flat-ass hair. It's 2003 to 2004 when they're filming this. That's right. Can't be having it. It was too early to, you couldn't, you couldn't, you couldn't, eats some gels to your house. Yeah, it's weird how you can do that now, right? Yeah, with Uber Brill.
Starting point is 00:22:51 Do you like a bit of beef? What? Between two... What do you mean? Beef. Oh, like having a beef. Having a beef. Oh, then yes.
Starting point is 00:22:58 Yeah, bearing in mind that this is between two people you don't know. Even better. Great. No, actually, that's not true. If I knew them slightly, that would be excellent. So this movie's producer, Don Carmody. He heavily criticized rival Canadian producer Robert Lantos for using Canadian taxpayers' money
Starting point is 00:23:15 from the Canadian government to fund to partially fund the film being Julia Carmody said to the press so he's out there okay, he's holding the press conferences Okay, catty Robert doesn't leave a penny of public money on the table
Starting point is 00:23:33 He goes and he shoots his movies in Greece or Hungary or whatever Resident Evil Apocalypse was shot 100% in Canada and dropped over 30 million into the economy and it somehow considered inferior to a picture that was shot in Hungary with virtually no Canadians It sounds like he does know it was shot in Hungary by the way Who's like Greece or Hungary or whatever, he knew.
Starting point is 00:23:50 Yeah, you know. Because we're successful and the envelope is available to us, suddenly we're carpetbangers? I defy anybody to determine that Resident Evil is less Canadian than being Julia or whatever the heck he's doing. Sought after but aging stage actress Julia Lambert has a love affair with Tom,
Starting point is 00:24:07 a young American actor, only to realize that he's using her merely to advance his career. She takes revenge on him. And Nets Benning and Jeremy Ones. I've seen that. Michael Gambon's in it? Michael Gambon? Tom Sturridge.
Starting point is 00:24:20 Bruce Greenwood. Others? Didn't see it. Do you want to say it? Miriam Margly is delightful. Sounds good. Max Irons. Napo baby,
Starting point is 00:24:33 Napo baby alert. Who's his dad also? Jeremy Irons probably. Oh my God. Disgusting. Yeah. Not a very British-ass name, is it? No.
Starting point is 00:24:41 Max irons, though. Max irons, yeah. Box office. Max. Betrayal. Yeah, big time. Maximum ions. Maximum ions.
Starting point is 00:24:48 On a budget of $45 million, and you can see every cent of that on the screen, let me tell you, Mason. Agreed. It made 129.3. It was also big on both VHS and Blu-ray. But not DVD? No. They skipped DVD? They didn't do it.
Starting point is 00:25:02 Okay. Well, this was the last Resident Evil to be released on VHS and the first to be released on Blu-ray. Huh. Don't you think that's good? That's groundbreaking. Yeah. Now, last week we talked about Roger Ebert and what he thought of the first Resident Evil movie. Oh, yes.
Starting point is 00:25:15 And you said to me, do you have a follow-up review for Resident Evil to Resident Evil Apocalypse? I don't think I did say that. From Roger Ebert. I don't think I said that. You called me crying. Okay. Weeping. Okay, now I remember.
Starting point is 00:25:27 And Mason's not normally the kind of man that does cry. That's true, but I said, sir, sir, sir, Mr. Sunday movie, sir. Do you have the thing that you said? Yeah, I do, I do. Okay, great. Roger Ebert. Reminded me, what did he think of the last one? He hated the first one.
Starting point is 00:25:41 Okay, terrific. Yeah. He said, this movie is an utterly meaningless. waste of time. There was no reason to produce it. Burn on that producer from before. Who we now know, some invested in that. And they put $30 million into the, into the Canadian economy. Canuck. That's right. Loonies. Is that a Canadian thing? It's like a type of coin or whatever. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. There was no reason to produce it except to make money. Yeah, mad. And there is no reason to see it except to spend money. It is a dead zone, a film without
Starting point is 00:26:11 interest, wit, imagination or even entertaining violence and special effects. Parents, if you encounter teenagers who say they like this movie, do not let them date your children. Wow. I think that's a bit harsh. A little bit. Yeah. But you know, we always have all, you know, as the modern equivalent of Siskel and Ebert, I think.
Starting point is 00:26:31 Yeah. You and me. Yeah. I think, you know, sometimes it's fun to have a just a really, a big, big dramatic take, a big dramatic sookie take, you know? Wham! Indeed. This movie's a waste of time and money, is what I say.
Starting point is 00:26:45 Where. I'll wait till there's a big Marvel movie that everybody likes, and I'll say this was a big waste of money, wham! And people are like, you don't know how to review. You're stupid. Mason, stop reading our comments. I can't believe you did a lot, Looney Tunes back in action. That's actually a really good movie.
Starting point is 00:27:01 I think you're just being mean. We are being mean. It's not a good movie. We were mean on purpose. I wasn't trying to be kind. That's right. Were you trying to be kind? I mean for you, I guess.
Starting point is 00:27:11 Yeah. Oh, man. Anyway, tune in next week to see what Roger Ebert thinks of Resident Evil 3, not the game, the movie. Finally, we knew what Gene Siskel thought of Resident Evil once. I know. Maybe I can do some research in upcoming weeks. He died. Yeah, I know that.
Starting point is 00:27:27 He died in 1999. Yeah, it was before Resident Evil, yeah. I know. You're thinking of Ouija board research. I was, yes. Which I can do. It's legal. Yeah, that's right.
Starting point is 00:27:37 No one can stop you. Yeah. Anyway, do you want to hint towards next week? Yes. It's the third resident evil movie. Oh, of course it is, yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:27:43 If you want to see that early, you can at big sandwich.com, Patreon.com slash Mr. Sunday movies. I'll sign up to be a YouTube member. Ooh, you'd be special if you did that. You would be. And there's also bonus stuff there that exclusively goes on those platforms, including a look at Resident Evil to the video game. Ooh.
Starting point is 00:28:00 And a Resident Evil, the first movie commentary. Oh. And another video game thing that we did. Oh. Also, we have a podcast that's called The Weekly Planet. You can check it out. I'm going to. It's free of charge.
Starting point is 00:28:10 It's free of charges. It's all exonerated, didn't it? That's right. Well, you know. Technicalities. Technicalities, exactly, right. Double indemnity. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:28:21 You know? Thank you so much to Ben for the edit. Thank you, Ben. Strap in everybody. We're not even halfway there. They might get better. I think it might be like a fast and furious curve where they get better and then they just drop off a cliff again.
Starting point is 00:28:33 I remember thinking the third one was my favorite. But also, like, I don't know at what point my brain is going to break during this. Yeah. It's when the continuity starts to like. So far, I feel strong. Wow, you look good. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:28:45 You've been doing muscle ups? I've been doing all the muscle ups you recommended. I said none. That was my recommendation. I'm doing all of them, though. Thanks, everyone. Grab that jammy guys. We'll see you next week.
