Off the success of the Sam Raimi & Tobey Maguire Spider-Man Trilogy it was time for a fresh new idea. So Sony decided to make the same Spider-Man movie again with The Amazing Spider-Man 2012. Starting point is 00:00:55 This podcast is part of the Planet Broadcasting Network. Visit planetbroadcasting.com for more podcasts from our great mates. If everybody doesn't mind, I'd like to start this video off by recapping what I feel is my favourite Spider-Man movie. My favourite kind of Spider-Man movie. Okay, here we go. Here we go. I'd like to see a grown man who's still in high school who ends up bitten by a spider
Starting point is 00:01:16 due to day-to-day activities, right? Probably in a lab. Doesn't have to be. It's irrelevant. I want to be confused the entire time about why this man in his late 20s is still in high school. I want to see him come up against like a mentor slash villain who's got that dueling voice thing going on in his head. He's like, maybe you should destroy the city and turn into lizards or whatever. He's like, maybe I shouldn't. I'd like to see like a nice swing through the city with the love of his life.
Starting point is 00:01:37 Do you know what I mean? His New York girlfriend. I would like to see New York banding together to help him because maybe he saved a kid who was dangling off a thing or whatever. And everyone saw him and was like, yeah, let's New York for this guy. You know? I also want to see towards the end of the movie that he's not able to be with the woman that he loves because something about honor and the secret will get out and a promise, et cetera.
Starting point is 00:01:55 And then if we could just wrap all of this up with a funeral, just terrific. Do you know what I mean? Just put a little bow on it. Put a little black sad bow on it. You know what I mean? Are you talking about an episode of Paw Patrol? I think I don't have kids, but I'm pretty sure that's what you're talking about episode of paw patrol yeah james no actually no you're not talking about that what are you saying james is that bloody you're thinking of the bloody bloody classic raimi spider-man movies and then you're
Starting point is 00:02:15 what you're saying james yeah what you're saying if i can reach into your mind is that you think the amazing spider-man it's just those movies again. Yeah, and I think, look, there are some things in this that do work, but I think maybe those things would have worked a lot better if we hadn't have seen all of this before, but in a slightly brighter-looking film. It's an interesting package, isn't it? Because it is darker in a lot of situations. They're just doing Batman Begins.
Starting point is 00:02:40 It's physically darker, yeah. It's Batman Begins. Also, it's probably easier to cover so-so visual effects if it's dark. But yeah, you're right. So much of this what seems to have happened is there seems to be some sort of evolutionary shift in the cinematic landscape
Starting point is 00:02:56 where they're like, well, we can't have him fight in a fun Technicolor pro-wrestling, underground pro-wrestling circuit or whatever. We can only allude to that briefly. Very good. Also, leave a like. I did a little intro when I really should have said,
Starting point is 00:03:11 welcome to Caravan of Garbage, leave a like, et cetera. Oh, yes, sure. You know, all of those things. But you had to do your little bit first. I had to do a bit, a fun bit. Oh, sorry. In this one, obviously, you're right. He has to be supported by the people of New York.
Starting point is 00:03:23 But obviously this movie is too cool for a guy to be like, if you mess with one of us, you mess with all of us. New York, baby. Instead we get a guy going, I was in the movie Soul Man. Don't look it up. Don't look it up. I've moved forward from then. Just don't look at anything from that movie.
Starting point is 00:03:40 Instead of a guy shouting, we've got a different guy being like, hey, we're all construction workers. We're all crane operators. Can you call some other crane operators? Yes. We've got to arrange some cranes. We need a scene that deals with the logistics of cranes because that's cool, I think.
Starting point is 00:03:55 It is cool. Here's something that I'm curious to know whether you think is cool. Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man. Go on. Now, even though he was 28 at the time of this movie coming out, maybe it's the hair, maybe it's the youthful look in his face, but he does feel younger than Maguire, who was technically, not technically,
Starting point is 00:04:14 who was younger than him when his movie came out, his first one. I completely agree with you. He does have a certain youthful exuberance. The Spider-Man he presents here is kind of like, he's got that persona that he's kind of funny and he's got japes and yeah and he's playing around which i very much liked do you think we've been tricked by a long t-shirt with a short sleeve t-shirt over the top of that t-shirt maybe we were tricked by that but i tell you what brought it all back to reality is the point quite
Starting point is 00:04:38 early in in the movie where they all have to all these adults teenagers have to squeeze themselves into those traditional american desks with the little chairs attached you just see all these adult teenagers have to squeeze themselves into those traditional American desks with the little chairs attached. You just see all these fully grown people just cramming their way in like it's parent-teacher interview day kind of thing. But then I'm like, what are you going to do, though? Do you do it Lord of the Rings style, where you make everything else slightly bigger? But then you have to make the teacher bigger.
Starting point is 00:05:00 That is true. You have to bring in Dave Bautista. Well, you'd have to. Yeah, you'd cast big, wouldn't you? You'd cast very big. I mean, it does, you know, a number of the tropes that people don't like him for no reason, even though he's obviously very handsome.
Starting point is 00:05:12 I have a note here that says, this handsome young man sucks. Remember when he saves that kid from the bully and that guy who's got nothing to do with it just kicks his camera. Yeah. Just kicks his camera on the way out. They've tried to toe the line, obviously.
Starting point is 00:05:24 They're like, what's a cool modern kid kid but he's also a nerd or whatever he's got like he's you know he he rides a skateboard and he's got a cool hoodie on probably got a hoodie on very cool probably spray painting an insignia is that what they say yeah but then he's also he's spray painting his insignia like one of those graffito gangs. You're absolutely right. But then also he's like, they've got to show his scientific side. So obviously he's going to build a weird robot door lock
Starting point is 00:05:53 on his room at home. Yeah. For jacking it purposes probably. Why else would he need it? For the webs, Mason. But he'd already built it. Yeah, yeah, exactly. What's interesting
Starting point is 00:06:05 also is they've you know i think when i look back at the amazing spider-man movies and i think about how there's too much to them yeah i think i'm mostly thinking of the second one but this one does also introduce this element from the comic books that is sometimes uh present which is that his parents are absent because there's some sort of science spies of some sort. I think in the comic books they were S.H.I.E.L.D. agents maybe at some point. Right. But in this they're just mysteriously on the run. Do we know if they're definitively dead in this universe? Well, we'll talk about it more next week,
Starting point is 00:06:35 but there are some deleted scenes which show that one of them maybe isn't. But that's more of an Amazing Spider-Man 2 situation. I also love how these movies ramp up in terms of the mystery. And again, we will come back to this next week. It starts off in here where it's like, oh, a secret little compartment in his briefcase. And the next movie it's like, underground train, underground secret train racing out of the ground.
Starting point is 00:06:57 You've got to put special coins in it to be found in a calculator. We made special coins. It's very interesting that his parents are like, we've got to leave. We cannot in good conscience be with our son because it's it would just rain misery and destruction on him sure but also i'm just going to leave my briefcase with all the secrets in it i'll just leave that i'll just leave that in the basement i guess yeah so that's what i'll do with it that's fine it's not a problem now it's also very obvious in this movie that a lot of these ideas have bled over from the sam Raimi Spider-Man 4 movie that he was
Starting point is 00:07:25 going to make. We talked about that more when we did cover the Raimi movies. They'll be linked below if you do want to check them out. But ideas like the lizard. Dylan Baker it was kind of worked up that he was going to make an appearance. He was walking around with one arm just being like, just you bloody way I'm going to lizard everybody so much.
Starting point is 00:07:42 I'll turn the city to lizards actually. It'll be me. You never got the chance yet. But I feel like also they speed through a lot of those old ideas. You know what I mean? Like we do get the origin again and his uncle shot, et cetera, et cetera. But they're just kind of done at a clip because it's shown that like, no, no, you've seen all this before. I mean, there are a couple of bits that are more drawn out
Starting point is 00:08:05 because I want to quickly talk about Sally Fields and more specifically Martin Sheen. Do you remember this famous Uncle Ben quote? Here we go. Your father believed if you could do good things for other people, you had a moral obligation to do those things. That's what's at stake here, not choice, responsibility. Just rolls off the tongue, doesn't it?
Starting point is 00:08:24 Absolutely it does. And that also explains why he calls Peter just prior to his death as opposed to texting him. That would have taken ages. And I feel ultimately it's Uncle Ben's fault. If you're calling a millennial and you expect him to answer that call, it's not going to happen. What are you talking about?
Starting point is 00:08:38 Of course you're going to get shot in the street, Uncle Ben. Also, if a man's coming at you with a gun, just run away. I don't understand it. It's so strange. And the weird thing is the street is empty at that point. There's a couple of moments where the street is empty. Remember the first time he tests his web shooters? He just lands in an empty New York street.
Starting point is 00:08:53 What is this, bloody of the year 2020 with the bloody coronavirus or something? You know what I mean? And the bit where Uncle Ben shot, there's nobody around. And he goes for that gun despite not seeing any context to that situation. Right. Why would you dive on that? That man maybe needed the gun to save a baby. Just shoot a baby out of a tree.
Starting point is 00:09:12 The baby was stuck in the tree. Uncle Ben. Uncle Ben. That's a boomer thing. Yeah, it must be. Here's a question for you. What's your favourite sporting scene in this? Is it the basketball scene where he's playing basketball
Starting point is 00:09:24 and then he does a big slam dunk in front of everybody? He jumps higher than any man has ever jumped in his life. Love a big slam dunk, sure. Is it the skateboarding slash web swinging sequence where he's swinging on chains but also skateboarding and buying himself into some abandoned skateboarding area? Or is it the bit where he dents the goalpost when he throws the football into it?
Starting point is 00:09:43 What's your favorite sporting achievement? They're all pretty good, but I have a note here. It just says, I love a good humiliating the bully scene. Sure. So we get that. And I love a good testing out the powers montage to Coldplay scene. So I'm loving both of those. Okay, three.
Starting point is 00:09:57 There was three of them in there. I didn't care for the last one. Okay, fair enough. It was also good. But again, how's he getting away with that? Yeah. How's he getting away with that dig in the Gold Post? I hope you saw that.
Starting point is 00:10:06 Yeah, well, there's a... Sorry to spruik another thing, but there is another video on my channel where it's all about all the times that Spider-Man accidentally or just obviously revealed his identity. Sure, yeah. It's a count that goes through them all. You know who is good in this, though?
Starting point is 00:10:18 Go on. Emma Stone. Yeah. I think they have excellent chemistry together. They were a couple at one point. It's weird that she invited him to dinner and then was like, what are you wearing that? Where's your suit?
Starting point is 00:10:29 What? Excuse me? Maybe, maybe. What is this, the 60s? What are you doing? Where's your argyle vest and your bow tie, Peter Parker? Your traditional look. I thought you'd wear your traditional look from the comic books, Peter Parker.
Starting point is 00:10:42 And we're eating a weird fish. He's eating a weird fish he doesn't know. A branzino or something. Is that what it is? Some sort of European bass. I looked it up. Put some lemon on it. Put some lemon and some other spices and such.
Starting point is 00:10:55 Could I maybe do a homemade tartare sauce? I mean, you could. Could I do a store-bought tartare sauce? Absolutely could, yes. Here's something I actually do like about this. And I don't dislike this in general. It's... Look, I don't love it.
Starting point is 00:11:09 You know what? It's too long. I don't like it. It's too long. But there's some things that I do like that aren't here. And you know how they could have shortened it a little bit? Yep. Get rid of the origin story.
Starting point is 00:11:18 We don't need it. We've just seen it. Everybody knows Peter Parker's origin. Exactly. It'd only been 10 years since the first Spider-Man. Not since the last Spider-Man. The first Spider-Man. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:27 And his origin story is obviously he goes to the Oscorp lab and he goes through that weird constellation style entry keypad. And then he gets bitten by a bunch of spiders.
Starting point is 00:11:37 It's not the weirdest computer interface in this. Him using Bing is obviously the weirdest. But what is that? What is all those things that he's poking at? Look, the thing about that is that I love a fake interface. Well, a fake... So for people,
Starting point is 00:11:50 it'll be on the screen now, one would assume. The entry keypad for the Oscorp lab is like this weird sort of virtual constellation situation where you expand it and then you have to do a sort of swipe all the way through it. First of all... Looks like a mini game for padding for time in a game that I don't like. First of all, it would never a mini game for padding for time in a game that I don't like. First of all, it would never exist in real life. And if it did, next to it, there'd be a post-it note with how you do it. Because everybody in the office would be like,
Starting point is 00:12:14 I don't know how to do this. Can we just put it on there? Can you give everyone a key? Just like a metal key. Not a key card, a key. Can we just put something in the door? Can we just put something in the corner of the door so it's always slightly ajar? Because I don't want to deal with this.
Starting point is 00:12:26 Yeah, no, you're absolutely right. But I did want to mention, again, sorry, the thing that I did like, was that he never gets his revenge on the guy who kills Uncle Ben. Yeah, because he's distracted because the largest criminal demographic in New York City is men in their 30s with shoulder length, blonde hair and beanies. They're doing robberies. They're doing assaults. They're stealing cars and milk.
Starting point is 00:12:49 They're probably in a Nickelback cover band. You better believe it. Yeah. Yeah. I just think odd choice of a man that's everywhere in the city apparently. But I think that idea that he's Batman-ing all about town because that is what he's doing and he never gets that that piece within himself that maybe drives him to do better to be grim and gritty like spider-man should be but
Starting point is 00:13:10 there is a moment where he's running and you see the face up close and he's wearing the sunglasses and the proto costume mask and the beanie and fx is the veil explores the surprising and fraught relationship between two women who play a deadly game of truth and lies on the road from FX's The Veil explores the surprising and fraught relationship between two women who play a deadly game of truth and lies on the road from Istanbul to Paris and London. Starting point is 00:14:11 sunrisechallenge.ca. Looks like a Sir Digby Chicken Caesar skit. Do you know what I'm talking about? Yeah, from Mitchell and Webb. Sure. There you go. Let's talk about the suit though. What do you think? From Mitchell and Webb, sure. There you go. Let's talk about the suit, though. What do you think? I don't hate it. I like that it's different.
Starting point is 00:14:35 I like that it feels like it's been obviously screen printed. What do you call that? Airbrushed? Airbrushed, yeah. Doing an insignia. Yeah, doing an insignia like a graffito man. But I like that because, you know, it makes sense that if a teenager, even kind of a creative teenager, would make a suit that looks like that. And, again, we all love the Tobey Maguire, Sam Raimi Spider-Man suit,
Starting point is 00:14:56 but a teenage boy is not making that. It's insane. A Hollywood special effects costuming department made that suit. That's right. This one looks more real and there's visible seams on it and when he connects it to the neck you can see there's a gap there. Yeah, and it's also slick and wet and mean, like he is for a lot of this movie.
Starting point is 00:15:14 He's a mean boy. Have you seen some of the concept art for the options that they had? I have, yeah. There's some real weird organic looking suits. Yeah, outside the box stuff. Even wetter. There's probably stuff on the screen right now. He's a wet mean boy, Mason.
Starting point is 00:15:26 He's a wet mean boy. But also with the swinging, there is a lot of physical stuff in this that they actually did, which I think adds a lot of weight to it. They had a guy on a wire swinging about. And I like that they tried new stuff as in like we get the first person perspective as you swing through. The Digby Chicken Caesar. That's a different thing. But, you know, when you see from his point of view as he's swinging,
Starting point is 00:15:49 I like that there's like a weird powdery residue that kind of shoots off his web flipper. His web flipper. Yes. And if you look the way that the light reflects on the web, it's kind of inconsistent, like the way the light hits it. And it kind of looks more like a spider web and more kind of organic than just like that kind of plastic fiber optic-y kind of look from the previous one. Yeah, right.
Starting point is 00:16:09 You know what I mean? I kind of, I like that. Here's something that I don't know that I do like. Are we talking about the design of the lizard? It's nearly right. I don't think it is. I think it's- It's the face.
Starting point is 00:16:21 If they change the face, it's fine. He needs to be snoutier and snootier like the comic book version he needs to be because he's not he's not a little he looks like a goomba he looks like a goomba exactly and again it's because we're in this weird middle ground where they were like we can't do the snooty snouty lizard and he's wearing purple pants and he's got a lab coat on yeah and he's running around sometimes he's wearing the lab coat he wears it for a second and that's's what they're like. People will be happy with a nod.
Starting point is 00:16:47 I'm not happy with a nod. He's wearing the lab coat all the time. But I think the idea behind that was that you can get more expression out of like a flat face than like a snazzy face. Yeah, maybe, yeah. So, you know, that's how it is. But, you know, I like the idea of that character being able to like regenerate his limbs.
Starting point is 00:17:03 You know, he loses a limb, he grows a back. That fight in the school is very good. Stanley's like, I'm just putting some books away. Oh, no, there's stuff going on. Or he doesn't even say on. He doesn't know stuff's going on, you know? It's good. I'm really glad there's no stuff going on, he thinks to himself.
Starting point is 00:17:17 I also, and look, I've mentioned this at least half a dozen times before. I can't believe that Peter Parker doesn't figure out who the big lizard is. And I know it's probably because the big lizard has two arms, but that guy's always like, I'm blending lizard DNA with human DNA. I'm going to grow my arm back. I'm using lizards. Hey, Peter, welcome to my lab.
Starting point is 00:17:36 Here's my very obvious WMD that I'm using for the betterment of mankind. I'm showing it to you now. So later in the movie, it's the WMD that's going to destroy the city or whatever. Turn everybody into lizards. Exactly. Ignore the scales on my neck. Excuse me, Kurt Connors, how would I destroy a big lizard?
Starting point is 00:17:53 Why do you want to destroy a big lizard? Don't you know lizards are great? Haven't you heard all the good news about lizards? Destroy a lizard? Wouldn't you rather be a lizard? Like me? I mean, I'm not a lizard. It's incredible that his plan is, I'm just going to make everyone a lizard? Like me? I mean, I'm not a lizard. It's incredible that his plan is,
Starting point is 00:18:07 I'm just going to make everyone a lizard. Yeah. What? Lizards are the best. No, they're not. Well, he's gone lizard mad. Yeah, he's gone lizard mad, hasn't he? It's like when you get a new hobby
Starting point is 00:18:18 and you want to get everybody else into your new hobby. Yeah. Podcasting. Doing YouTube videos. We want everybody. We want to turn everybody into a YouTuber. We want to see people on the streets and they're like, hey guys, don't forget to like and subscribe.
Starting point is 00:18:32 Yeah. To being friends with me. But of course he does get some help at the end of the movie from one Captain Stacy. Quick question for you. Did Dennis Leary steal his whole personality from Bill Hicks? Yes, but a lot of people did Yeah, a lot of people did Whatever
Starting point is 00:18:46 Who's to say? It's neither here nor there I was going to say I like his Captain Stacey though I think he's, you know He's just a mean man He's a mean wet boy and a mean man Yeah
Starting point is 00:18:55 Just going at each other over a fish Exactly And he's traditionally I think he's younger than like How he's traditionally depicted It's more the ultimate version Yeah, yeah, yeah There is a moment in there
Starting point is 00:19:04 Where he's describing Spider-Man and he says, of Spider-Man, he's an anarchist, and I feel he really missed an opportunity to say, he's an asshole, what an asshole. Such an asshole, whoa, whoa. He's the world's biggest asshole. You know, like that song that he did. Yeah, that was a big song in 93 or 94, whatever it was.
Starting point is 00:19:20 Right? That big song. People have forgotten, but we're bringing it back. What a world. He uses public toilets and he pisses on the seat, et cetera. And he walks around in the summertime. How he's changed. And now he's all about the authority.
Starting point is 00:19:31 Yeah. Well, speaking of, he's a bad cop because people are ringing him being like, there's a big lizard. He's like, yeah, right, big lizard. And Peter Parker comes in and he's like, I met a man who has turned himself into a lizard and he's been doing lizard experiments. If you just look into this a little bit,
Starting point is 00:19:45 this guy that you know who you know is doing lizard experiments and your and he's been doing lizard experiments. If you just look into this a little bit, this guy that you know who you know is doing lizard experiments and your daughter knows he's doing lizard experiments, I think he's a lizard. He's like, well, that man wrote my daughter a letter for college. What? You're a cop.
Starting point is 00:19:55 Are you fucking serious with that? Yeah. What kind of corruption blind-eye shit are we talking about here? And also, if that guy turns out to be a really big lizard, that letter to the college is not going to be worth much, is it? Or worth heaps. Are you the young woman who got a letter of recommendation
Starting point is 00:20:09 from a big lizard? He does. He comes around. To his credit, he's like give me everything we have on Curtis Connors. And the police will be like, nothing. Why would we have anything on just a regular man? I don't know. Oh my goodness. Anyway, there's a whole lot of mysteries here
Starting point is 00:20:29 That we're going to come back to next week But what else do you have before we do some trivia? I enjoyed the fact very much that Peter's identity is revealed to the lizard Because Peter, like, dimoed his name On his camera like Bart did You know, on that radio in that episode. Remember when he was Timmy O'Toole, the boy trapped in a well?
Starting point is 00:20:49 The episode with Stig, yeah. Yeah, that's right. Yeah. Oh, you're not wrong. You know what? That's about it, I think. That's all I have. Oh, you know what I have?
Starting point is 00:20:59 Here's the note. Peter Parker attempts to sneak his way into Oscorp by pretending he's part of scholarship programming, and to do so he steals the identity of a man named Rodrigo Guevara who was just robbed of a bright future. I know, right? I mean, this is probably his supervillain origin story. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:21:17 You know, there's going to be a guy showing up with science-based powers and he's going to be like, you ruined my life, Peter Parker. That wet, mean boy stole my opportunity. Right. Ring-a- stole my opportunity. Right. Ring a ding ding, Mason. Go on. So I should say, ring a bing ding. It's time for our trivia thing that we do every week.
Starting point is 00:21:31 Very nice. Sponsored by Bing. The search engine you don't use. Yeah. No one does. Is it still around? Sometimes it opens in a browser and you're like, I didn't even know I had this browser. And you go to Bing and you're like, is Google okay?
Starting point is 00:21:45 How do I get to Google from you, Bing? So, Oscorp Tower nearly made an appearance in the Avengers 2012. But by the time the Oscorp building was fully designed, by the way, I like that design, the kind of hexagonal octagonal thing, whatever it is, whatever shape it is. I don't know shapes. I'm a YouTuber.
Starting point is 00:22:02 You know what I mean? Hell yeah. But you like shapes. I like shapes, yeah. And if you out there like a particular shape, we like it is. I don't know shapes. I'm a YouTuber. Do you know what I mean? Hell yeah. But you like shapes. I like shapes, yeah. And if you out there like a particular shape, we like it too. We're on your side. We like the same shapes, actually. We like the same shapes you do. But the Avengers Digital Manhattan was already basically rendered, and so
Starting point is 00:22:18 there was some conversation about merging them together, but for timing, it was scrapped. That maybe would have contributed to maybe the garfield version coming over again i mean you know it's happening anyway yeah but uh interesting another villain was cut from this now as in as in a pre-production stage yes right so they didn't film anything and then yeah that's right but it's interesting because like often i'm like you're cramming too many villains into your spider-man movies why are you making so many
Starting point is 00:22:44 bad spider-Man movies? And Abby Arad's like, listen, it's none of your business. I'm rich and I don't know what I'm doing. And I'm like, I know. So you're saying the villain was the lizard's tail that came up and they were going to make him into some sort of animated sidekick. If you split the lizard down the middle, will he grow into two separate lizards or will it kill him?
Starting point is 00:23:03 I think he'll die from his brain being split into two bits. Interesting. Something to think about, though. Anyways, it was the big wheel. It was cut. Not a joke. Supervillain the big wheel. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:23:12 Who, God, I can't remember his origin, but he's just a guy who's mad at people. And he's got a big wheel. I think maybe a bank or something. He's mad at the bank. Yeah. And he's like, I'm going to kill you with a big wheel. The bank? Yep.
Starting point is 00:23:23 Pretty big wheel. Very big. To kill a wheel. The bank. Yep. Pretty big wheel. Very big. To kill a bank. A bank-crushing wheel. But for people that are, just imagine a Ferris wheel with a man at the centre and the wheel's got guns on it. Should I look up the origin of the big wheel just quickly? Please, if you could.
Starting point is 00:23:37 Okay. This is for the extended one, the big wheel, where we pad for time. You know what I mean? Sometimes we pretend like we remember characters and great details about these obscure characters, but then I'm just like, he had a big wheel, I guess. Did he fight Rocket Racer? I think he
Starting point is 00:23:54 fought Rocket Racer. Maybe. His name was Jackson Wheel. Oh, there's been more than one. Okay. Oh yeah, there's been a bunch of big wheels. Okay, he was a businessman who embezzled from his company, fearing that he might be caught. He hires a youthful criminal rocket racer to steal the evidence that incriminates him. However, rocket racer opts to use the evidence
Starting point is 00:24:10 to blackmail wheel instead. Despairing wheel tries to commit suicide. Ooh, a bit dark. But rocket racer prevents him from doing so. However, racer is not particularly kind to wheel, disparagingly referring to him as big wheel. Humiliated by rocket racer's taunts, wheel visits the mechanical genius and underworld supplier,
Starting point is 00:24:26 the Tinkerer. Makes sense. Who the Rocket Racer boasted had upgraded his equipment at Wheels, urging the Tinkerer creates a large metal wheel that can climb up buildings complete with guns and Waldo arms. Waldo arms? Like extended arms on like a space suit or a submarine or whatever. He didn't sever Where's Waldo?
Starting point is 00:24:42 His arms, no. Slash Wally's arms. No, no, he didn't do that. Okay, fair enough. But that's pretty great. So, I mean, you know, business embezzlement, all that. That's some Spider-Man stuff, I feel. Very much so.
Starting point is 00:24:53 Who's he going to be embezzled from? Norman Osborn, maybe? Yeah, probably. I mean, it makes sense that they would cut out Big Wheel. Yeah. Because, I mean, there's a lot to cram in here. Totally. You've got to add a rocket racer.
Starting point is 00:25:04 You've got to add the tinkerer. You know what you need to do as well? You need to put a vaguely defined shape of a Norman Osborn type character in this. You don't want to cast it. You just want to do like a vague idea. Who is this man we will cast in the future? Nobody. No, wait.
Starting point is 00:25:17 They cast him in the next one, don't they? I think so, yeah. Good Lord. Movies, am I right? Here are some names that were considered for the role of Peter Parker slash Spiderman. I'm ready. Sorry, Spiding Man. Taylor Lautner.
Starting point is 00:25:30 Josh Hutchinson. Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Logan Lerman. Robert Pattinson. Jamie Bell. Daniel Radcliffe. Michael Cera. Alden Ironreich.
Starting point is 00:25:42 Zachary Ephron. Aaron Taylor Johnson Xavier Samuel Jim Sturgis Can I stop you here? Sure Just every sort of brown haired youngish man in Hollywood I'm not finished so I've got a few more here
Starting point is 00:25:54 Okay but the end result will be every youngish brown haired man in Hollywood But continue Bearing in mind I don't know where this is going Unless you've got a funny one at the end? No Okay then continue I've got one that they dodged a bullet on. Drake Bell.
Starting point is 00:26:08 Don't look into it. Liam Aiken and Anton Yelchin. There you go. But. And Pee Wee Herman, there's your funny one at the end. Hey! I got a second movie. We know Pee Wee Herman.
Starting point is 00:26:20 Anyways, Donald. I'm going to use that door lock. I'm going to use that door lock. The robot door lock for reasons. I'm in the theatre thing. Yeah, that's what I'm talking about. Donald Glover mentioned at the time in jest that he was very keen on the role of Peter Parker. As a result of this, I mean, he was never going to get it.
Starting point is 00:26:41 But there was a lot of backlash. Some people, to be fair, were like, yeah, he's great. He should be it. Yeah. But there was a lot of backlash. Some people, to be fair, were like, yeah, he's great. He should be it. But as a result of this, he is one of the contributing factors to the creation of Miles Morales. Now, I want to specify some people were like, well, that's not actually how it happened because... Shut up for a second.
Starting point is 00:26:58 I'm not finished yet. One of the factors. Because the creation of that character was, of course, from Brian Michael Bendis. He adopted a daughter at the time and he wanted uh more characters like in the marvel universe that represented her that was partially the idea also the editor-in-chief at marvel at the time was hispanic also spider-man was going to be dying in the ultimate universe so they needed a new version of spider-man regardless so again that was one of the factors that contributed to marvel's morale and it was sort of the idea of okay okay, if Spider-Man were to be created today,
Starting point is 00:27:27 like, you know, as a kid in New York City, in one of the boroughs of New York, what would he be like? And it sort of emerges that character, and that's cool. Also, it's the best Spider-Man movie. Come on, let's... It is, right? It's good. It's a good movie.
Starting point is 00:27:39 It's the best Spider-Man movie. I mean, it doesn't end in a funeral or whatever. Here's one more. There's a funeral in it, though. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Sorry, yeah, yeah, yeah. Here's something that I just like to end things on in terms of whatever this trivia thing is, I called it.
Starting point is 00:27:53 This is from the Howard Stern show. Sally Fields went on and he said, did you like it? As in the movie, The Amazing Spider-Man. This is quite recent, right? This was, I don't know, who cares? Okay, great. And this is what she said.
Starting point is 00:28:04 Let's say yes. Yeah, sure, sure, okay and this is what she said let's say yes yeah sure sure yeah this is what she said it wasn't like the 1850s no no no no no this was modern times this was after she was in the movie i mean what an incredible turn of events if that had been the case but she said uh did i like it not especially it's not my kind of movie but my friend laura ziskin was the producer and we knew it would be her last film, and she was my first producing partner, and she was a spectacular human. When Howard Stern asked how much effort she put into preparing for the role of Aunt May, she said, not a great deal. It's really hard to find a three-dimensional character in it, and you work at it as much
Starting point is 00:28:37 as you can, but you can't put 10 pounds of shit in a five-pound bag. Wow. Yeah. But you can put 10 pounds of wheat cakes in a five-pound bag. Maybe she could have really delved into that character. Yeah, I agree. Yeah. Do you think when she said spectacular,
Starting point is 00:28:49 do you think that was a nod to spectacular Spider-Man? Do you think that was a little Easter egg for the fans there? Yeah, she obviously did her research, and yes. That's what I thought, yeah. So, yeah, look, it's not the most beloved Spider-Man film, but I think it is one that people look back on and go, it's okay. Yeah. And I also think that Andrew Garfield is good.
Starting point is 00:29:07 And we'll talk about it more next week when we cover the infinitely superior movie, The Amazing Spider-Man, second one.
