It's closer now though, isn't it?
Starting point is 00:01:05 It's worse. No, it's good. Oh my goodness. Never in my life. Comic book properties are hotter than ever, but there was a time when everything they made was mostly terrible. And the thing we're talking about today is very much indicative of the era of comic book movies and television at the time.
Starting point is 00:01:22 Birds of Prey, the TV series, it's Dark Angel, it's Daredevil, it's every kind of bad idea from the early 2000s. It's a lot of transitions of just some sort of invisible helicopter sweeping through an awful CGI city. It's the worst CGI city I've ever seen, I think, on television. But considering it's 2003 or whatever. Even then, I mean, just get some But considering it's 2003 or whatever. Even then. I mean, just get some stock footage of a helicopter going through a city.
Starting point is 00:01:48 There's quite a bit of stock footage and also recycled stuff from this, from other DC properties, which we will talk about. But before we get into any of that, of course, give this video a like, Mason. I know you're watching. You, Mason. Oh, I'm watching back. Okay, right. Yeah, that's right.
Starting point is 00:02:04 Oh, he said something stupid again. Stupid, Mason, stupid. Birds of Prey, by the way, it's getting a new movie. That's why we're doing this. That's right. And this is kind of an amalgamation of like Batman 89, Batman Returns, the animated series, Batman Beyond, the killing jokes, some of the comic stuff.
Starting point is 00:02:20 Well, it's interesting because, you know, in the comic books, Birds of Prey is a team put together by Barbara Gordon Oracle initially, and it's sort of a team of usually female superheroes all teaming up for various ends. And the movie we're getting soon isn't really that, you know, but this isn't that either. It's not like, well, the movie's really, they're really, this isn't an accurate take on this, but this TV version isn't.
Starting point is 00:02:45 It's, you know. It's weird and vague. Well, let's do a team breakdown, this isn't an accurate take on this, but this TV version isn't. It's, you know. It's weird and vague. Well, let's do a team breakdown. Why don't we? We both watched the pilot, though we watched different pilots. You watched the unaired pilot and I watched the regular pilot. But I have also seen the regular pilot. So I'm at Birds of Prey TV series saturation point.
Starting point is 00:02:59 Let me tell you, because I saw this when it came out as well. And you loved it then? No. Yeah. There was a reason it was cancelled after 13 or whatever it was. Okay, so who we've got? tell you because i saw this when it came out yes as well so and you loved it then no yeah no there was a reason it was cancelled after 13 or whatever it was okay so who we've got we've got dinah lance yep who's so well well that's i guess black canary but in this version i think it's supposed to be her daughter right but it's not she's not very black canary no she is because she has none
Starting point is 00:03:20 of the black canary no her ability is see the future or something yeah she's none of the Black Canary powers. No, her ability is... See the future or something. Yeah, she's got the most, at the time and even now, the most vague set of psychic powers imaginable. And it's also, if you watch the series as a whole, you discover that clearly what the writers are doing and going, and we've written ourselves into a hole here, just give her a new power. So later in the series, she just develops telekinesis, think and she's got but in this one yeah she can her ability is basically she can touch someone and and she gets a sort of a psychic vision of some sort oh my god she's bruce willis in the
Starting point is 00:03:54 bruce willis trilogy yeah exactly but it's but it's kind of she may as well not have it because in a lot of cases it's like they're surrounded by you know men wielding guns with threatening expressions and she touches one of them and goes, this is a trap. Yeah, we know it's a trap. It's always a trap. That's how superhero stories work. It's never not been a trap. I would argue that it's somewhat useful for reading a person
Starting point is 00:04:15 on the street. There is a moment in the pilot where Oracle's like, what are we going to do with her? What could she do for this team? See the future, actually. That's quite good. She's demonstrably got an amazing power, What could she do for this team? See the future. Yeah. Actually, that's quite good. She's demonstrably got an amazing power.
Starting point is 00:04:30 Although she doesn't see the future initially in the pilot where she meets, she's on the bus to Gotham City and she meets a handsome. Jesse Pinkman. She meets a younger Jesse Pinkman. Yeah, Aaron Paul. The Price is Right's own Aaron Paul. Have you seen that? No.
Starting point is 00:04:42 He was once on The Price is Right. Oh, pre-fame. Pre-fame. Did he win a lot of money? I think The Price was Right in own Aaron Paul. Have you seen that? He was once on The Price is Right. Oh, pre-fame. Pre-fame. Did he win a lot of money? I think The Price was right in the end, yeah. He gets it all, doesn't he? He does. That son of a bitch.
Starting point is 00:04:51 And he's on Westworld. Yeah, right? Let us be on Westworld. Right. I'll put on a cowboy hat. I'll put on a set of... I won't look good, but I'll do it. I'll put on a set of chaps.
Starting point is 00:04:59 No one wants that. But I'll do it for drama's sake. Yeah. Johnny Drama. Johnny Drama. So, of course, also we have Huntress. Yes. There's various versions of this.
Starting point is 00:05:12 The CW version isn't the daughter of Batman and Catwoman like this one is. No, so, yeah, so this is one of these multiversal problems. Like in original appearances on Earth 2, which is a parallel universe version of Earth, she is the daughter of Batman and Selina selena kyle catwoman yes uh and then later versions she's just she's helena bertinelli she's the daughter of a crime boss and that's the continuity in the comic books at the time yes so of course in this version she's the old continuity yeah unity version she's the daughter of of bruce wayne and selena kyle she's the daughter of two
Starting point is 00:05:42 non-superpowered characters who has cat abilities. Yeah, she's got Matrix abilities. At one point later in the series, she just does a straight up, some fight choreography straight out of the Matrix. Oh my goodness. Some spinning around in the air situations. You know what?
Starting point is 00:05:55 She's also describing this, because in the show there's a narration from Alfred Pennyworth at the start, and spoiler alert, right at the end. And he's like, oh, let me tell you a story about the greatest heroes of Gotham. Not Batman, not the most interesting character,
Starting point is 00:06:09 but some lesser-known characters. Yes, he describes her as half metahuman. You either are or you're not. Sure, yeah. That's how this works. But also that suggests that Catwoman's metahuman. Well, I guess because it's sort of the Batman Returns version because the costume that we see is very michelle pfeiffer and she sort of has vague cat powers in that she did
Starting point is 00:06:30 survive like an exploding generator at the end of batman shot many times shot many times off a roof kissed the penguin with a taser in her mouth no that was max shrek oh it was too yeah yeah penguin would have bitten her nose off that's true Maybe she's metahuman Which makes the Huntress full metahuman That's right Alfred We also have Barbara Gordon as Oracle Pretty accurate
Starting point is 00:06:56 For the most part, yeah Lives in the clock tower, shot by the Joker Now you're thinking of the Hunchback of Notre Dame I am too, that's right Talks to gargoyles Harley Quinn, it's revealed as a psychologist Joker. No, you're thinking of the Hunchback of Notre Dame. I am too. That's right. Talks to gargoyles. That's right. Exactly. Yeah, et cetera, so forth.
Starting point is 00:07:06 Harley Quinn, it's revealed as a psychologist. Yeah, so in the unaired pilot, she's played by a sort of famous B-movie actress, Sherilyn Phan. Yes. And then in this, it's Mia Sara, I think. Ferris Bueller. Yeah, Ferris Bueller. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:07:19 She's from Ferris Bueller. Yeah, yeah, that's right. Yeah. And I've also written here, Alfred is in it. He sure is. That's right. What do you think about the Alfred in this? He's not my favourite.
Starting point is 00:07:26 He's not my favourite, yeah. He voiced the Emperor for a lot of the Clone Wars. He's passed away now. Ian Abercrombie, I believe his name is. Well, then I retract some of the terrible things I'm going to say about him. Rest in peace, that guy, Ian Abercrombie. Look, he's good in things. I think he's fine, yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:40 I just think he's just in it. I think everybody in this, especially in the pilot, is hamstrung just by not great writing in your dialogue. Yeah, absolutely. And the fact that in most of this, they're just in bad sets. Yeah. There's a lot of that, yeah. What I also like about this show, we'll get back to it,
Starting point is 00:07:56 but I feel like the pilot kind of, you know, even though it's kind of clunky and not particularly great, it does kind of set up, well, this ain't your grandpappy superhero stuff. This is going to be modern and mature. But by episode four, it's like, we've got to look after this baby. Yeah, absolutely.
Starting point is 00:08:10 Oh, no. Well, that's the episode that we are going to- I'm not motherly at all, but I'm taking care of a baby. That's the episode we are going to specifically talk about today. But I just want to mention how the pilot wraps up, and that is they all have a mind fight in each other's minds. They do. Which is a power that
Starting point is 00:08:26 one or some of them have so basically there's four guys something something real estate and three of them die of apparent suicides and they're like well we should go and help this fourth guy and then it turns out he's the bad guy after all and he's also
Starting point is 00:08:41 he can get in their minds but then Dinah Lance can get into his mind because of her black canary powers exactly that's right yeah and what i enjoy about that also she had the real black canary powers she could like liquefy his brain brain just scream into his ear that's right just look just shoot out the other side exactly that's right but what happens at the end of this episode is the the established team uh huntress and oracle they're having a chat afterwards and they're like we well, get this new girl on the team. And then they're like, boy, this was really quite a mundane adventure. It wasn't like the amazing adventures we normally go on.
Starting point is 00:09:12 We'll maybe show one of those. Yeah, absolutely. They're like, normally the whole city's at stake and the whole everything's blowing up. Maybe show us that then. You know, that would be nice. Open with a good one. As opposed to a weird black and white mind fight.
Starting point is 00:09:23 Yeah, exactly. Don't need that. Just quickly on the pilot. I thought it was going to be revealed that he was using scarecrow toxin to make people be fearful and kill themselves. But it's just a weird. Poison tea. Yeah, is that what it was?
Starting point is 00:09:34 I think it was just poison tea. I looked away. Okay. See, the advantage that you had watching a show like this in 2002 is that you didn't have as many apps on your phone to distract you. So they really had the lion's share of your attention back in the day. You know they did. You worked with what you had.
Starting point is 00:09:54 That's right. Starting point is 00:11:24 Huntress rescues a baby. Side note, they mentioned this in the pilot, I think. It's sort of lampshaded of like, well, why don't you wear a mask? It's important if you're a crime fighter to wear a mask. But all the Huntress does is when she's in superhero mode, she sort of feathers her hair up a bit. Face is right there. Yeah, right?
Starting point is 00:11:44 And there's a cop that keeps meeting up with her and it's like, who is this mysterious woman? Not just a cop, it's Shemar Moore from Criminal Minds. You're absolutely right, I apologise. And whatever marine show he's in now, I don't know what it is. Sure. It's probably about war. Marine CSI.
Starting point is 00:11:56 Navy SEALs, I don't know what it is. War cop, yeah, yeah, absolutely. They also change her costume for the better because the pilot costume is, it's weird and flouncy i don't know what it is but then they're just like leather jacket i don't know yeah whatever do a dark angel style just leather jacket exactly i mean i know like the domino mask it doesn't do that much but something yeah some thing a hood a hood it would be nice exactly so she rescues a baby at the start of episode four and she turns to the mother and she's like i like rescued your baby but the mother's been stabbed but her reaction is kind of like what what why like it's not like
Starting point is 00:12:30 this is horrible this is a tragedy this is a super villain or superhero origin it was more like oh well now there's time for some hijinks yeah exactly i don't know how i'm gonna get through this 42 minutes. So it turns out that Harley Quinn has manufactured this baby because she couldn't have a baby with the Joker. So she's breeding clone assassins that only live for like three days. They're like pop-up assassins. Yeah, they kind of are, yeah. I guess would be the best way to describe them.
Starting point is 00:13:00 And they've got a nanomesh in them or something. Yeah, right. You can trigger it with a GPS to make them fight. They've got a nano mesh in their brain that hand waves away the fact that nobody teaches the kid to talk, but somehow he can talk immediately. Oh, that's true. As soon as he grows up, right? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:17 Have you noticed in these episodes, and maybe it's just the version that we've got, it says action in the corner of all the episodes? I did not notice that. It just says action. At the start there's an explosion, and then it says action, and then the action just stays for the entire episode. I don't know where you found your copies of this.
Starting point is 00:13:33 I assume it all came... Legitimate sources, Mason. You purchased them from Blockbuster Video, as we always do. No, I didn't notice that. But I did notice in the opening action sequence, the Huntress is really swinging that baby around. You were not rescuing nothing, lady.
Starting point is 00:13:45 You are rescuing baby soup with that. Rest its head. What are you doing? What are you doing? It's madness. Did you buy the way the baby matured into a man who looks like he's in NSYNC very quickly? Yeah, he's got that 2003 NSYNC kind of look.
Starting point is 00:14:02 The nanomesh provides a certain amount of gel to the hair. It secretes gel out of the skull, so the hair is perfectly early 2000s. Oh, absolutely, yeah. There was actually a moment in this where they go to find out what's going on with the baby and it turns out that it's a trap. Of course, it's always a trap.
Starting point is 00:14:18 All the guys have guns. How do you feel about, I know you've mentioned it, but any of the action in this? Because there is some kung fu-ing about. There's not, not yeah i don't think it's the worst i've ever seen i think it's just what they did at the time this is what you kind of did yeah right yeah it's it's it's the best they could do yes given the time and the budget well that's the thing i often pay out on old tv shows or whatever and it's like well if sure if you gave them a a MCU budget, they could produce some great things. But if you give them, you know, six days and 20 grand,
Starting point is 00:14:49 what are they going to come up with? Yeah, exactly, yeah. So the idea behind this story is to, I mean, do you want to blow-blow-blow recap? Not really. The baby gets older and then when he turns into an NSYNC. They trigger a thing via some sort of ancient 2002 app that turns him into a violent soldier, yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:06 But then he decides to be good. Because he's bonded with those women. They don't know how to raise a baby, but they raised a baby. They raised a good one. And then he very quickly turns into an old guy and dies or whatever. Which makes me wonder, the question I was left with is, how do they dispose of that body? Do they just leave it in the clock tower?
Starting point is 00:15:25 Does he disintegrate really quickly? No, I don't think he does. I think it's Gotham. You just throw him off a roof. Yes, yeah, that's true. There's no record of this guy. No, that's true, yeah. It doesn't matter.
Starting point is 00:15:33 Yeah, what happens in Gotham City is if the cops find a body, they've just got a big rubber stamp that says unsolved on it and you just stamp it on their forehead and they walk away. Have you noticed that most TV shows involving Batman are just about how Batman's left? They're all about how Batman's abandoned. I feel like given that Batman's main characteristic is that he has no superpowers,
Starting point is 00:15:58 but he keeps at it because he is just so incredibly tenacious. He'll never leave. Birds of Prey and Titans and bloody... Whatever CW stuff. Whatever CW, yeah, Batwoman. It's all just like, I've given up. I've given up and I'm gone and it's up to somebody else. Yeah, it's a licensing thing, right?
Starting point is 00:16:14 Oh, for sure. But that's the thing because, you know, Supergirl and, you know, The Crisis on Infinite Earths, which we just had, brought in Superman. And they brought in some Batman. Like, they brought in a Kevin Conroy Batman. Yeah, they brought in an alternate universe version. And Gotham.
Starting point is 00:16:26 There was a Batman in Gotham. Like if you're afraid of bringing in an iconic character and kind of ruining him. You know I am. They did it really well, I think, with Supergirl. With a guy who I'd never heard of, Tyler Herkul. Yeah, absolutely. You know, he's very charming and very Superman. Getting his own series.
Starting point is 00:16:39 The very idea that they couldn't do with Batman is odd. I think it's a licensing thing. Maybe it's a money thing. Yeah, definitely. We also forgot to mention that in the pilot episode, you see the Joker voiced by Mark Hamill and Batman in their final kind of showdown and battle. And I'm like, this is interesting-ish.
Starting point is 00:16:55 And then it's kind of, that's the extent of what you get. That's not the story Alfred's going to tell, right? As we've previously established. No, no, no. Also, a few things about this universe, I guess. If it is an extension of the Burtonverse, first of all, Joker's still alive, even though he fell off that...
Starting point is 00:17:10 Yeah. I think it's more shades of than anything else. Yeah, I guess it's true. But also, we get a Harley Quinn, but I guess her secret identity is intact and she's still a psychiatrist. She's not good in this either. Like a bad version of Harley Quinn in this.
Starting point is 00:17:23 I like Ferris Bueller, I think. No, I don't. Actually in this. Yeah. I like Ferris Bueller, I think. No, I don't. Actually, well, I don't like Ferris Bueller. He sucks. He sucks as a person. You should put a warning up the front of this video.
Starting point is 00:17:31 That I don't like the man Ferris Bueller. Yeah, exactly. Cameron's dad's going to murder him. Oh, for sure. Because Ferris just walked away from that.
Starting point is 00:17:37 He ruined that car. Yeah, exactly. He ruined that car. Anyways, to wrap up the episode, they make him a birthday cake because he never had a birthday and he's like, cool. And then he dies. And they throw him in a cake because he never had a birthday. And he's like, cool. And then he dies.
Starting point is 00:17:46 And they throw him in a river or whatever. That's right. And then Huntress goes to the park and talks to the cop, NCIS Worf cop or whatever, and then comes back. And then she's got the cake still and it's lit. I think they just edited it this way. But I think what was supposed to happen is those scenes were supposed to happen back to back,
Starting point is 00:18:02 but they put the weird park scene in the middle, which means she must have blown out the candle gone home relit the cake walked out on the balcony blew it out yes and then that was the episode and this is a series of additional scenes where the wind takes the candle out just to relight it again exactly yeah yeah so i don't and of course there's that scene where harley quinn's like i can't comprehend it we had the best nano mesh and what what turned this baby around? And the mercenary she's hired who was soundly defeated is like, well, it might have been the power of love and friendship.
Starting point is 00:18:34 And she's like, I don't understand the power of love and friendship. And then she's like, well, the only possible solution now is, and then she like vaguely kills the guy, like she vaguely slices his throat. I reckon as a paid mercenary, if I'd failed, I'd probably just send an email. I'd be like, didn't happen. You can keep the other half of the money. I'm just going to leave.
Starting point is 00:18:51 You'll never see me again. I'm leaving this hellhole. I don't want to end up in a ditch with an unsolved stamp on my head. Exactly. It's a really good point because he's just sitting there with his back to her and he goes, we didn't do it. I'm just going to sit in this chair and let you walk behind me. What do you think about that, you murderous
Starting point is 00:19:06 lunatic? Oh, I'm dead. I did not see this coming. I guess I am a bad mercenary. I guess so. So I just want to talk about some connections that we mentioned. So Dinah was originally intended to be a revision of the comic book character Black Canary, but there was outcry from comic book fans, which
Starting point is 00:19:22 means the character was retooled as Canary's daughter. So that's confirmed. The Batgirl suit that we see worn, that's a repaint of the one that Alicia Silverstone wears. Oh, okay, right. And the belt is very similar to the Clooney belt as well. They got the Clooney belt.
Starting point is 00:19:37 They got the Clooney belt. That means Alicia Silverstone and Clooney, same waist. Not surprising. Not surprising. Take that however you want. The suit is intentionally Michelle Pfeiffer-ish for Catwoman. There's a shot of the Arkham Asylum plaque, and that is just lifted directly from Batman Forever. They just took that shot out entirely.
Starting point is 00:19:56 Okay, right. We mentioned Mark Hamill being the Joker. Batman's suit was recycled from Batman and Robin. They changed the color of the suit, adding the yellow chest emblem, and the cowl was from Batman Forever. So it's a mixture of those two. It's a mishmash, okay. Because they do actually look quite good, those suits.
Starting point is 00:20:12 I think so. I guess that makes sense because they're movie-quality suits. Yeah. We also mentioned how this was cancelled in January of 2003. Eleven episodes aired, and then the producers allowed them to film the final two episodes for some reason. Isn't that nice? I don't understand that. That's pretty that's pretty uncommon because swamp thing was recently cancelled and they just went you got 10 you're done yeah right that was it yeah that's wild it's here's the thing i can't really remember the last two episodes i wonder if they just went hog wild
Starting point is 00:20:37 with them do you think they did at the end the last two episodes are just about the birds of prey battling against awful tv producers you know the real criminals are in gotham city everyone in hollywood that's who that's right yeah i just realized also we've been saying 2003 during this and it ended in 2003 but it started in 2002 i said i'm mentioning this year because you know okay because people care about this one thing that i do remember about the final episode is i've really seen all of these. I've really seen all of these. There was nothing else though, was there, at the time? No, exactly. That's right.
Starting point is 00:21:09 I think it was released at like 11pm or something on Channel 9. Anyway, the point is right at the end, I believe Alfred picks up a telephone and he's like Oh, Master Wayne, they're doing very well. You'd be very proud of them, kind of thing. Great. Sug'd be very proud of them kind of thing.
Starting point is 00:21:25 Great. Suggest that Bruce Wayne is still out there. Which I say, maybe come back to Gotham, Bruce. Yeah, season two. They really messed up this whole baby thing, is all I'm saying. They really did. How old would he be at that point? He'd have to be close to 50 at least, wouldn't he?
Starting point is 00:21:38 Oh, my God. Well, maybe he's past it then. He's all right. Look at that waist. Oh, my goodness. He's so narrow. How does he do it? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:21:43 I also want to mention that this is definitely worth bringing up Because we get people shouting at us So you know This is the subsection of the video called Hey shut up We mentioned it Maybe I won't get shouted at though Ashley Scott
Starting point is 00:21:55 Reprised her role as Helena Kyle In Crisis on Infinite Earths That is true And Rachel Scarston Who plays Dinah Lance Also stars in Batwoman as the character's sister. That's right.
Starting point is 00:22:06 Because she was 16 at the time when they filmed the show. So, yeah, there you go. Sucks. I don't know what else to say. I mean, I know it's all the time. When you know, you know. When you know, you know. I guess I can see what they're doing and it's as good as it could have been.
Starting point is 00:22:25 So I guess there's that element of it. Look, honestly, disagree. I think if the production values were a little bit better. This is what TV was, though. I guess that's probably true, yeah. Name a better thing from 2002. Dark Angel, I guess, maybe. I vaguely remember it.
