Donald Trump returns to the White House one week from now. Two provincial premiers say this country should be bracing for tariffs
Starting point is 00:00:42 he will impose on all Canadian goods. But leaders of Alberta and Ontario have different approaches to his threat. Rafi Boudjikanean has more. I won't hesitate to pull out every single tool we have. Ontario Premier Doug Ford saying Canada can't sit back and let the US impose a 25% tariff on all goods it imports from this country. Something incoming President Donald Trump says he'll do in a week when he comes to power. When our country's under attack economically, you just don't roll over. Ford says he still won't rule out imposing counter tariffs or cutting off energy exports to the US.
Starting point is 00:01:19 Measures the federal government says it is exploring too. But Trump's latest Canadian guest has different ideas. We had a friendly conversation. Alberta Premier Daniel Smith met Trump in his Florida estate this weekend. Smith says restricting energy exports would provoke a national unity crisis in Canada. Premiers are scheduled to meet with the federal government on Wednesday to continue hashing out this country's response. Rafi Boudjikani on CBC News, Ottawa.
Starting point is 00:01:47 Donald Trump's inauguration day could also be launch day for Christian Freeland. The CBC's French network is reporting the former deputy prime minister will announce her candidacy for the liberal leadership on or before Monday. Freeland's stunning departure from the federal cabinet a month ago is regarded as the tipping point which led to Justin Trudeau's decision to resign as leader. She's expected to propose dollar-for-dollar matching tariffs on American exports to Canada. The new Liberal leader and next Prime Minister will be announced on March 9th. Los Angeles is bracing for the return of the high winds that helped fuel the deadly fires. Officials are bolstering their defenses, and Canada
Starting point is 00:02:24 is playing an important part in the fight. Erin Collins has that story. We have right now extreme fire behaviour. Strong winds are back in the Los Angeles area, fanning the flames of the fires burning there. LA Fire Chief Kristen Crowley acknowledging the help of the fire crews from out of state. We absolutely know that we cannot do this on our own and we are tremendously appreciative of all of your continued support. A cruise from Alberta will soon be among the firefighters on the ground around LA.
Starting point is 00:02:57 Good neighbors are always there for each other. Todd Lowen is Alberta's Minister of Forestry. Two wildfire crews, including 40 wildland firefighters and two agency representatives are on their way to California to assist with firefighting efforts. Firefighters from B.C. and Ontario will soon join them. Water bombers from Quebec are already in the L.A. area and two more are on the way. Canada's Air Force is pitching in too, helping to transport equipment and supplies. Aaron Collins, CBC News, Calgary.
Starting point is 00:03:27 The White House says Hamas and Israel are on the cusp of a ceasefire deal. The two sides are considering the final draft of a proposal after a breakthrough in negotiations in Qatar. There have been countless ups and downs in the negotiations. But in his final speech to the State Department as president, Joe Biden explained this agreement is on the brink of becoming a reality. The deal we have a structure which freed the hostages, halt the fighting, provides security to Israel, and allow us to significantly surge humanitarian assistance to the Palestinians
Starting point is 00:04:01 who suffered terribly in this war that Hamas started. Hamas released a statement saying it is keen on reaching a ceasefire deal. Israel says they are awaiting on final approval from Hamas. At least 100 illegal miners have died in South Africa after being trapped underground for months. Hundreds of people were digging for gold in an abandoned mine in Northwest Province. Police launched an operation to drive them out back in November. A group representing the miners says police cut off food supplies as part of their strategy. It's believed many have died of starvation and dehydration. Officials suggest hundreds more miners remain underground and unaccounted for.
