This video is a message from a little boy named Salman.
He disappeared five years ago in Syria during the war to defeat ISIS.
He still hasn't been found.
My name is Poonam Tineja.
I'm traveling to Syria to find out what happened to Salman and the thousands of children like
him lost in one of the most dangerous places on earth. From BBC Sounds and CBC podcasts, Bloodlines. Listen wherever you get your podcasts.
From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Neil Herland. Los Angeles is bracing for the return
of high winds that helped fuel the deadly fires.
Officials are bolstering their defences and Canada is playing an important part in the fight.
Erin Collins has more.
We have, right now, extreme fire behaviour.
Strong winds are back in the Los Angeles area, fanning the flames of the fires burning there.
LA Fire Chief Kristen Crowley acknowledging the help of the fire crews
from out of state.
We absolutely know that we cannot do this on our own
and we are tremendously appreciative
of all of your continued support.
A cruise from Alberta will soon be among the firefighters
on the ground around L.A.
Good neighbors are always there for each other.
Todd Lowen is Alberta's Minister of Forestry.
Two wildfire crews, including 40 wildland firefighters and two agency representatives are on the way to California to assist with firefighting efforts.
Firefighters from BC and Ontario will soon join them.
Water bombers from Quebec are already in the LA area and two more are on the way.
Canada's Air Force is pitching in two, helping to
transport equipment and supplies. Aaron Collins, CBC News, Calgary.
Donald Trump returns to the White House in one week from now. At least two
provincial premier say this country should be bracing for tariffs that he
could impose on all Canadian goods. But as Rafi Boujikanein reports, the leaders
of Alberta and Ontario have different
approaches to his threat.
I won't hesitate to pull out every single tool we have.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford saying Canada can't sit back and let the US impose a 25% tariff
on all goods it imports from this country. Something incoming President Donald Trump
says he'll do in a week when he comes to power.
When our country's under attack economically, you just don't roll over.
Ford says he still won't rule out imposing counter tariffs or cutting off energy exports to the US.
Measures the federal government says it is exploring too,
but Trump's latest Canadian guest has different ideas.
We had a friendly conversation.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith met Trump in his Florida estate this weekend.
Smith says restricting energy exports would provoke a national unity crisis in Canada.
Premiers are scheduled to meet with the federal government on Wednesday to continue hashing
out this country's response.
Rafi Bouducani on CBC News, Ottawa.
Chris Jeffreland will announce her bid for the Liberal leadership within the next week.
Sources confirm to Radio Canada that the former finance minister will declare her intentions
ahead of Donald Trump's inauguration. We also have word tonight from a source close
to Mark Carney that the former Bank of Canada governor is expected to launch his campaign
this Thursday, and
tonight Carney is appearing on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.
The government of Qatar says both Hamas and Israel now have the final draft of a cease-fire
deal.
The news of significant progress in the talks comes just seven days before Joe Biden leaves
the White House, and with that, a major shift in American foreign policy.
The CBC's Sasha Petrusic reports from Jerusalem.
After months of fruitless talks, mediators in Doha say there was a breakthrough in negotiations
late last night when Israeli and Hamas officials seemed to overcome major differences blocking
a Gaza ceasefire.
We see some progress in the negotiations.
Today Israel's Foreign Minister Gideon Sarr
sounded unusually optimistic.
Israel wants a hostage deal.
Soon we will know whether the other side wants the same thing.
Both sides are under US pressure
from incoming President Donald Trump
and the outgoing administration
of President Joe Biden and his national security adviser Jake Sullivan.
We are still determined to use every day we have in office to get this done.
Can we get it done before the 20th?
It is possible.
But say mediators, still not guaranteed.
Sasha Petrusik, CBC News, Jerusalem.
And that is your World This Hour.
For CBC News, I'm Neil Herland.
