Canada's premiers are bracing for Donald Trump's return to the White House and his threat to
impose tariffs
on Canadian goods entering the U.S. As Tom Parry reports, the Premiers of Alberta and
Ontario are expressing different views on how Canada should respond.
I think we need to be prepared that tariffs are coming.
After meeting incoming U.S. President Donald Trump over the weekend, Alberta Premier Danielle
Smith says Trump's threat of tariffs is real.
The federal government says all options are on the table for retaliation,
but Smith says Alberta won't stand for any limits on shipments of its oil and gas to the US.
They will have a national unity crisis on their hands at the same time as having a crisis with our US trade partners.
Ontario premier Doug
Ford says Canada must stand up for its interests and can't rule anything out.
We have to use all the tools possible when our country's under attack. You just
don't roll over. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will meet with premiers this
week to discuss just how far his government is prepared to go if Trump
makes good on his threat. Tom Perry, CBC
News, Ottawa. Mark Carney is appearing on the American late-night program The
Daily Show with Jon Stewart tonight. The former Bank of Canada governor is
expected to join the Liberal Party leadership race. A source close to Carney
tells the CBC's French network the launch is expected on Thursday.
Meantime, Donald Trump's inauguration date could also be the launch day for Chris Jeffreeland. The
former finance minister will announce her candidacy for the Liberal leadership
on or before next Monday. Well, the winds are picking up again in Los Angeles,
threatening any progress in fighting the relentless wildfires. At least 24 people
are confirmed dead and nearly as many are
reported missing. 92,000 people are under evacuation orders as the fire threat remains
critical. Lindsay Duncombe reports.
The call came in just after 10.30 in the morning. A new fire, smoke spotted between Santa Clarita
and Acton.
Quebec pilot Pascal Duclos rushes into the cockpit of his bright yellow super scooper
aircraft at the Van Nuys airport.
Another mission on a deployment to Los Angeles like no other.
We're all pretty tired, exhausted and a little nervous right now.
Over the weekend, crews made good progress on the two largest fires burning in Los Angeles.
But everyone is worried about what comes next.
Santa Ana Winds forecasts to pick up with gusts up to 112 km an hour.
Fear of fire in a city just coming to grips with how much has been lost.
More than 12,000 structures, many of them homes, gone.
Lindsay Dankom, CBC News, Los Angeles.
Israel says it's waiting to hear from the Palestinian militant group Hamas on a possible
ceasefire deal in Gaza.
The government of Qatar says a draft agreement has been sent to the two sides after a breakthrough in talks.
Gideon Tsar is Israel's foreign minister. He says a deal would include the release of some hostages held by the militants.
We see some progress in the negotiations. Israel wants a hostage deal.
Israel is working with our American friends in order to achieve a hostage deal.
And soon we will know whether the other side wants the same thing.
And Joe Biden says the Gaza deal is close.
He summed up his foreign policy accomplishments Monday in one of his final speeches as president.
Our adversaries are weaker than where we came into this job
four years ago.
Just consider Russia.
When Putin invaded Ukraine,
he thought he'd conquer Kiev in a matter of days.
The truth is, since that war began,
I'm the only one that stood in the center of Kiev, not him.
Biden says the U.S. is in a better strategic position
to tackle threats from Iran and China
than it was four years ago. And that is your World This Hour. For CBC News, I'm Neil Herlund.
