Starting point is 00:00:00 When was the last time you said, hmm, I never thought about it that way. The Current aims to give you that moment every single day. Hello, I'm Matt Galloway and our award-winning team brings you stories and conversations to expand your worldview. Sometimes they connect to the news of the day, sometimes to the issues of our time. And you'll hear all kinds of people on The Current from bestselling authors to the prime minister, to maybe your neighbor. Find us wherever you get your podcasts, now including YouTube.
Starting point is 00:00:28 I'll talk to you soon. From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Neil Herland. Mark Carney is appearing on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart tonight, which airs on the Slice Network in this country. The former Bank of Canada governor played coy when asked if he plans to run for the Liberal Party of Canada leadership. Have you offered yourself as leader? I just started thinking about it.
Starting point is 00:00:59 A source close to Carney says he plans to launch his campaign this Thursday, but tonight he appeared to be already campaigning. A wild hypothetical. Let's say the candidate wasn't part of the government. Let's say the candidate did have a lot of economic experience. Let's say the candidate did deal with crises. Let's say the candidate had a plan to deal with the challenges in the here and now. You sneaky! You're running as an outsider.
Starting point is 00:01:26 I am an outsider. Meantime, Christa Freeland will announce her bid for the liberal leadership within the next week. Sources confirm to Radio Canada that the former finance minister will declare her intentions ahead of Donald Trump's inauguration. And Trump returns to the White House in one week from now. At least two provincial premiers say this country should be bracing for tariffs that he could impose on all Canadian goods. But as Rafi Boujikaneen reports, the leaders of Alberta and Ontario have different approaches to his threat.
Starting point is 00:01:57 I won't hesitate to pull out every single tool we have. Ontario Premier Doug Ford saying Canada can't sit back and let the US impose a 25% tariff on all goods it imports from this country. Something incoming, President Donald Trump says he'll do in a week when he comes to power. When our country's under attack economically, you just don't roll over. Ford says he still won't rule out imposing counter tariffs or cutting off energy exports to the US. Measures the federal government says it is exploring too. But Trump's latest Canadian guest has different ideas.
Starting point is 00:02:33 We had a friendly conversation. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith met Trump in his Florida estate this weekend. Smith says restricting energy exports would provoke a national unity crisis in Canada. Premiers are scheduled to meet with the federal government on Wednesday to continue hashing out this country's response. Rafi Bouducani on CBC News, Ottawa. Los Angeles is bracing for the return of the high winds that helped fuel the deadly fires. Officials are bolstering their defenses and Canada is playing an important part in the fight. Erin Collins has more. We have right now extreme fire behavior. Strong winds are back in the Los Angeles area fanning the flames of the fires burning there. LA
Starting point is 00:03:16 Fire Chief Kristen Crowley acknowledging the help of the fire crews from out of state. We absolutely know that we cannot do this on our own and we are tremendously appreciative of all of your continued support. A cruise from Alberta will soon be among the firefighters on the ground around L.A. Good neighbors are always there for each other. Todd Lowen is Alberta's Minister of Forestry. Two wildfire crews, including 40 wildland firefighters and two agency representatives are on their way to California to assist with firefighting efforts.
Starting point is 00:03:47 Firefighters from B.C. and Ontario will soon join them. Water bombers from Quebec are already in the L.A. area, and two more are on the way. Canada's Air Force is pitching in, too, helping to transport equipment and supplies. Aaron Collins, CBC News, Calgary. The White House says the Palestinian militant group Hamas and Israel are on the cusp of a ceasefire deal. The two sides are considering the final draft of a proposal after a breakthrough in talks brokered by Qatar.
Starting point is 00:04:17 In his final speech to the U.S. State Department as president, Joe Biden explained this agreement is on the brink of becoming a reality. The deal we have in structure would free the hostages, halt the fighting, provide security to Israel, and allow us to significantly surge humanitarian assistance to the Palestinians who have suffered terribly in this war that Hamas started. Israel says it's awaiting final approval from Hamas. And that is your World This Hour. For CBC News, I'm Neal Herland.
