From CBC News, the world this hour.
I'm Neil Herland.
Mark Carney is expected to formally announce his campaign to replace Justin Trudeau this
Thursday.
The former governor of the Bank of Canada appeared on The Daily Show last night with John
Stewart. Stewart even joked that Carney was actually announcing his bid on the
program. Congratulations on announcing on this program that you are running. To be the leader.
Carney stopped short of confirming that he's running, but he made his pitch clear to become
leader of the Liberal Party of Canada and Canada's next Prime Minister.
I think in a situation like this you need change.
You need to address the economy.
We've got an economic crisis because of what Mr. Trump is about to do or saying he's about
to do, but we also have challenges in housing, cost of living.
The Daily Show airs on the Slice network in this country.
Carney also took aim at Canada's conservative leader.
We have Mr. Pauliath, a type of politician who's, you know, tend to be a lifelong politician.
Really?
Tend to worship the market.
They've never actually worked in the private sector.
Right.
Meantime, former finance minister Chris Jeffrereland is also expected to announce he's running
to lead the Liberals.
A formal declaration is expected in the next week.
Donald Trump's pick for U.S. defense secretary is in the hot seat today.
Pete Hegseth will face a confirmation hearing.
American senators are expected to ask him tough questions, including past allegations
of sexual assault and excessive drinking.
Well today is a critical day in Los Angeles. The Santa Ana winds are once
again picking up, threatening to fan the deadly flames that firefighters are
trying to contain. Here's CBC meteorologist Ryan Snodden.
A fire weather outlook risk for Tuesday into Wednesday in the elevated ranges.
Then we have a huge area north of Los Angeles, extreme risk Tuesday and Wednesday.
Officials are indeed extremely worried.
Widespread gusts, 50 to 90 km per hour.
This is actually not as strong as last week's event, but still a very dangerous situation
setting up here for Tuesday and into Wednesday.
These winds
strengthen as they move through the gaps in the mountains and of course they also strengthen as they descend from the mountains.
Finally some relief by the time we get to Thursday, but a long couple of days ahead.
That's CBC meteorologist Ryan Snodden. And dozens of Canadian firefighters are arriving in Southern California to join the fight
against the devastating wildfires. Water bombers have been making progress dousing the flames,
clearing the way for ground crews. John Hernandez reports. Wildfire crews are calling it an air
fight. Helicopters carrying thousands of liters of water are among the most effective tools to tame the flames in Southern California. The BC based Colson Aviation is among the
companies fighting the Eaton and Palisades fires and has been flying its
large dual rotor helicopters around the clock.
We flown more hours at night.
Wayne Colson, its CEO, says they've made steady progress over the past two days
clearing the way for
ground crews to set up containment lines.
We are of course worried about the wind kick up because you just never know.
Canada's defence minister says dozens of Canadian wildfire fighters have been deployed and more
are on the way.
The BC wildfire service says 22 ground crew firefighters left Monday morning. Alberta wildfire has sent in additional 40 wildland firefighters.
Two Quebec water bombers are already there.
Two more are expected to arrive on Wednesday.
John Hernandez, CBC News, Vancouver.
South Korea's suspended president was supposed to face an impeachment trial today.
But Yoon Seok-yul did not show up at court, so the court session ended.
Yoon's lawyer had said his client would not come to court today because of concerns that
he could be detained by police.
In December, Yoon triggered a political crisis in South Korea by briefly declaring martial
law and suspending the right to protest.
Opposition politicians have been trying to permanently remove him ever since. And that is your World This Hour. For CBC
News, I'm Neal Herland.
