The Liberal carbon tax is as good as dead. That's the message from two of the biggest
names expected to run for the liberal leadership, former Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney
and former finance minister, Christia Freeland. Both are now distancing themselves from Justin
Trudeau's signature climate change policy. Kate McKenna has more.
If we had a carbon tax election now we could elect a strong stable
national majority government. Conservative leader Pierre Poliev is
still calling for the carbon tax to be the ballot issue in this year's federal
election but by the time Canadians go to the polls it's likely no party will be
supporting a consumer carbon tax. A source close to Kriss Jeffreeland told
CBC News she'd ditch it if elected. That's a big shift.
She defended the carbon tax repeatedly when she was a member of cabinet.
And Mark Carney previously called the carbon pricing framework a model for others, but
recently said the burden of climate change should not be on individual Canadians.
Poliev isn't buying it.
These lying liberals will deny that right before the election to trying to trick Canadians into letting
them back in to raise taxes all over again.
Canadians could go to the polls this spring.

B.C. Premier David Eby says Donald Trump has made a declaration of economic war on Canada
and B.C.
This is a challenging thing.
It is a serious threat.
And we wanted to share with you our best information.
Eby says Trump's proposed tariffs on Canadian imports
and the Canadian response would cost the province tens of billions of dollars.
The BC government estimates there will be 124,000 fewer jobs in the province
by 2028, and the unemployment rate would rise to 7.1 percent next year.
One of the organizers of the Ottawa trucker protests will soon learn if he's going to jail,
but it won't be today. Pat King has been convicted on five criminal charges related to the
demonstrations that brought downtown Ottawa to a standstill in the winter of 2022.
The judge in the case is hearing sentencing submissions today, but says he will need more
time before handing down a sentence.
Last-minute hurdles are putting the Gaza ceasefire and hostage agreement on hold.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is accusing Hamas of reneging on parts of
the deal. Hamas denies those claims.
Meanwhile, outgoing U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken remains confident the ceasefire
will come into force as planned.
Chris Reyes has more.
I've been on the phone in one way or another all morning with our Qatari friends, and I'm
very confident that this is moving forward, and we'll see the start of implementation
of the agreement on Sunday in his farewell address
Secretary of State Antony Blinken urged the incoming Trump administration to build on the ceasefire deal and to continue to work towards
Integration in the region. I think we've now put in place and done the work that
Handing it off can be used to build a strong foundation and move down that much more positive path.
As he prepares to pass the baton, Blinken said the ceasefire deal is one example of the importance of U.S. engagement in the world.
And I think this week was another reminder, both of the power and the purpose of American leadership and American diplomacy.
Marco Rubio, president-elect, Donald Trump's pick for secretary of state is awaiting confirmation.
Chris Reyes, CBC News, New York.
Meanwhile, Israeli strikes continue across the Gaza Strip.
Gaza's health ministry says at least 72 people have been killed since the ceasefire deal
was announced.
A Hamas official says one of those airstrikes targeted an area where the group held one
of the Israeli hostages.
The condition of that hostage was not announced.
