We begin in Edmonton. I'm here to ask for your support. I'm here to earn your trust to declare my candidacy for leader of the Liberal Party and Prime Minister of Canada. Mark Carney made it official, launching his
Starting point is 00:00:53 campaign to become Liberal Party leader and by extension Prime Minister. The former governor of the Bank of Canada painted himself as an outsider, someone who has never held elected office. Carney says he'll be completely focused on fixing the economy, pointing out Justin Trudeau let his focus wander. This weekend, similar leadership bids are expected from former finance minister, Christa Freeland, as well as the government house leader, Karina Gould. The liberal carbon tax is as good as dead. That is the message from Mark Carney, as well as the other prospective Liberal leader, Krista Freeland. Both are now distancing themselves from Justin Trudeau's signature climate change policy.
Starting point is 00:01:30 Kate McKenna has more. If we had a carbon tax election now, we could elect a strong, stable, national majority government. Conservative leader Pierre Poliev is still calling for the carbon tax to be the ballot issue in this year's federal election. But by the time Canadians go to the polls, it's likely no party will be supporting a consumer carbon tax. A source close to Christia Freeland told CBC News she'd ditch it if elected.
Starting point is 00:01:55 That's a big shift. She defended the carbon tax repeatedly when she was a member of cabinet. And Mark Carney previously called the carbon pricing framework a model for others, but recently said the burden of climate change should not be on individual Canadians. Poliev isn't buying it. These lying liberals will deny that right before the election to try and trick Canadians into letting them back in to raise taxes all over again. Canadians could go to the polls this spring.
Starting point is 00:02:24 Kate McKenna, CBC News, Ottawa. BC Premier David Eby says Donald Trump has made a declaration of economic war on his province and Canada. This is a challenging thing. It is a serious threat and we wanted to share with you our best information. E.B. says Trump's proposed tariffs on Canadian imports and the Canadian response would cost the province tens of billions of dollars. The BC government estimates there will be 124,000 fewer jobs
Starting point is 00:02:58 in the province by 2028, and the unemployment rate would rise to 7.1 percent next year. The Gaza ceasefire and hostage agreement, which was settled yesterday, is facing pushback from the Israeli government. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is accusing Hamas of reneging on parts of the deal. And his national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gavir, is threatening to quit if the agreement goes ahead. Should that happen, Netanyahu's fragile government coalition might
Starting point is 00:03:25 collapse. Meanwhile, Israeli strikes continue across the Gaza Strip. The Health Ministry says at least 72 people have been killed since the ceasefire deal was announced. David Lynch, one of Hollywood's most original filmmakers, has died. His family announced his passing in a Facebook post earlier today. Deanna Sumanac Johnson has more on Lynch's career on the big and small screen Eerie stylish often erotic David Lynch's movies made arthouse filmmaking popular with millions by the 1980s Lynch was already a director to watch with films like Blue Velvet Lynch was already a director to watch with films like Blue Velvet.
