Hi, I'm Jamie Poisson and I host CBC's daily news podcast, Frontburner.
Every weekday we set out to have a conversation about the biggest Canadian and global issues
that you want to know more about, from politics to culture to online stuff.
We spend a lot of time on the show thinking about the best ways to have those conversations
and searching for the smartest people to have them with.
That's it.
That's The Cell.
I hope you'll tune in.
From CBC News, the world is our. I'm Tom Harrington. Mark Carney has officially
announced he is running to replace Justin Trudeau as Liberal leader and
Prime Minister. The former governor of the Bank of Canada is painting himself
as an outsider with the skills to fix Canada's problems. Olivia Stefanovic has more.
I'm back home in Edmonton to declare my candidacy for leader of the Liberal Party and Prime Minister of Canada.
It was standing room only in the hockey rink where Mark Carney used to play,
but this time he's starting from far behind the opposing team.
We're getting warmed up.
We're gonna head out in that third period and we're gonna win.
Carney portrayed himself as a centrist, an outsider.
And as a former banker, Carney says he's focused on getting the economy back on track
and facing off against Donald Trump.
When your opponent is tough, you have to step up.
He called Pierre Poliev a naive and dangerous populist, bent on tearing things down rather
than building up.
But before he can take on Poliev, Carney needs to convince his own liberal teammates he's
the one to lead them.
Olivia Stefanovic, CBC News, Ottawa.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is pushing back against Alberta Premier Danielle Smith.
He says her refusal to sign on to a unified response to Donald Trump's terror threat undermines Canada.
Trudeau also accuses Conservative leader Pierre Polly-Eve of playing along.
Evan Dyer reports.
Either he stands up to fight for all Canadians alongside all Premiers
and the federal government that are doing that,
or he chooses to stand with Daniel Smith, Kevin O'Leary, and ultimately Donald Trump.
Trudeau used Alberta Premier Daniel Smith's refusal to sign onto a common front against Trump
to challenge Polyaev to take his side.
Does he support her desire to exempt Alberta oil and gas from any Canadian retaliation?
Now they're resorting to dividing our people.
Paglia avoided stating his position, instead saying Trump should send flowers to the Liberals
for blocking pipelines, leaving Canada with no options to sell to countries other than
the US. Not so, said Trudeau.
Canadian taxpayers bought the Trans Mountain Pipeline Expansion, TMX, to be able to get
Albertan oil to new markets.
Trudeau said the Albertan government is now making billions from that investment and repeated
his call for the province to join a Team Canada approach.
Evan Dyer, CBC News, Ottawa.
Israel's approval of the Gaza ceasefire and hostage deal is on hold.
Hardline National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Ghivir is threatening to quit if the agreement
goes ahead.
Should that happen, Netanyahu's fragile government coalition might collapse.
Outgoing U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken remains confident the ceasefire will come
into force as planned.
We've worked to broker a deal that would bring hostages home, that would stop the fighting,
that would surge humanitarian aid to people who so desperately need it, that would create
the space to conclude a permanent ceasefire.
We now have that, and we expect implementation of the agreement to begin on Sunday.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Hamas is not honoring certain elements of the deal.
Hamas officials deny Israel's claims
and say the group was officially committed
and fully committed to the agreement.
The Cuban government has released from jail
prominent dissident Jose Daniel Ferrer.
He is one of as many as 500 people expected to be freed
from Cuba's prisons in the coming days.
Their release was negotiated by the Biden administration
with the help of the
Vatican. In return, Washington announced it would lift its designation of Cuba as a state sponsor of
terrorism. One of Hollywood's most original filmmakers has died. David Lynch co-created
the groundbreaking TV series Twin Peaks. He also earned Oscar
nominations in directing for Blue Velvet, The Elephant Man, and Mulholland Drive. Lynch's
family announced his death in a Facebook post. A lifelong smoker, he was diagnosed with emphysema
in 2020. David Lynch was 78 years old. And that is Your World This Hour. For CBC News,
I'm Tom Harrington.
