Starting point is 00:00:00 Queer life in Montreal was wild. Montreal in the 90s was a great time, but it had a dark side. It was not a safe city for gay people back then. But what else was behind a series of deaths in the city? Somebody's killing gay men. We want to know why. I'm Francis Proude, and this is The Village, the Montreal Murders. Starting point is 00:00:41 From CBC News, the world is ours. I'm Tom Harrington. Mark Carney has officially announced he's running to replace Justin Trudeau as liberal leader and prime minister. He painted himself as a political outsider, someone who understands economics and the threats Canada is facing. The system is not working as it should. And it's not working as it could. Too many are falling behind. Too many young people can't afford a home, too many people can't find a doctor. And our climate is changing in ways that threatens livelihoods from Fort Mac to Fort Smith. And then on top of that, in just four days, the United States will swear in a man who threatens
Starting point is 00:01:19 economic force on his closest allies. He attacked Pryor Poly Pauliev as a career politician and native and naive populist who wants to tear things down rather than build things up. The liberal carbon tax is as good as dead. That's the message from Mark Carney as well as another prospective liberal leader, Christopher Freeland. Both are now distancing themselves from Justin Trudeau's signature climate change policy. Kate McKenna has more. If we had a carbon tax election now, we could elect a strong, stable, national majority
Starting point is 00:01:50 government. Conservative leader Pierre Pauliev is still calling for the carbon tax to be the ballot issue in this year's federal election. But by the time Canadians go to the polls, it's likely no party will be supporting a consumer carbon tax. A source close to Kriss Jeffreeland told CBC News she'd ditch it if elected. That's a big shift. She defended the carbon tax repeatedly when she was a member of cabinet. And Mark Carney previously called the carbon pricing framework a model for others, but
Starting point is 00:02:16 recently said the burden of climate change should not be on individual Canadians. Poliev isn't buying it. These lying liberals will deny that right before the election to try and trick Canadians into letting letting them back in to raise taxes all over again. Canadians could go to the polls this spring. Kate McKenna, CBC News, Ottawa. BC Premier David Eby says Donald Trump has declared economic war on his province and Canada. This is a challenging thing.
Starting point is 00:02:48 It is a serious threat and we wanted to share with you our best information. Eby says Trump's proposed tariffs on Canadian imports and the Canadian response would cost the province tens of billions of dollars. The B.C. government estimates there will be 124,000 fewer jobs in the province by 2028, and the unemployment rate would rise to 7.1% next year. The Gaza ceasefire and hostage agreement, which was settled yesterday, is facing pushback from the Israeli government. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is accusing Hamas of reneging on parts of the deal and his national security
Starting point is 00:03:28 minister Itamar Ben-Gavir is threatening to quit if the agreement goes ahead. Should that happen, Netanyahu's fragile coalition might collapse. Meanwhile, Israeli strikes continue across the Gaza Strip. The Health Ministry says at least 72 people have been killed since the ceasefire was announced. David Lynch, one of Hollywood's most original filmmakers, has died. His family announced his death in a Facebook post. Deanna Sumanac-Johnson has more on Lynch's career on the big and small screen. Eerie, stylish, often erotic, David Lynch's movies made art house filmmaking popular with millions. By the 1980s, Lynch was already a director to watch with films like Blue Velvet. Who are you? What's your name? What's your name?
Starting point is 00:04:15 Jeffrey. Jeffrey what? Jeffrey nothing. Starring frequent collaborator Kyle McLaughlin and Isabella Rossellini, it was a mystery with elements of sex and violence. Motifs even more prominently featured in Lynch's most famous work, 1990s TV show Twin Peaks. After multiple Oscar nominee Mulholland Drive, he made only one other feature film. He directed and wrote shorts, painted and poured his heart into the David Lynch Foundation,
Starting point is 00:04:45 dedicated to the study of the benefits of Transcendental Meditation. David Lynch was 78. Deanna Sumanac-Johnson, CBC News, Toronto. And that is Your World This Hour. For CBC News, I'm Tom Harrington. Thanks for listening.
