Starting point is 00:00:00 The next thing I know is I wake up and I just remember like something bad happened to me last night. Somebody hurt me. This is Carrie Lowe's story. Carrie did everything quote unquote right. She reported right away. Her legal team says police systematically mishandled her case. Meanwhile her attackers remain at large. I'm Maggie Raher and this is Carrie Lowe versus available now
Starting point is 00:00:26 on CBC Listen and everywhere you get your podcasts. From CBC News the world this hour I'm Claude Fague. We begin in Gaza where a long-awaited ceasefire came into effect this morning and with it the release of three hostages. A family in Israel reacts to the release of the hostages today. The women, two of them in their 20s and one in her 30s, are now in the care of the Israeli Defense Forces back in Israel. All three are reported to be in good health. Some 90 Palestinian prisoners are being released in exchange. It all follows a tense morning and delays in the implementation of the ceasefire.
Starting point is 00:01:08 It finally went into effect nearly three hours after it was originally scheduled. Speaking in South Carolina, outgoing U.S. President Joe Biden commented on the hostage release and aid headed to Gaza. We pray for them and their families for they're going to be a long recovery. Hundreds of trucks are entering Gaza as I speak. They're carrying assistance for civilians who suffered enormously from the war. Hamas started October 7, 2023, nearly 15 months ago. Today alone we anticipate several hundred trucks will enter the Gaza Strip and after so much pain, destruction, loss of life,
Starting point is 00:01:45 today the guns in Gaza have gone silent. Final preparations are underway for the inauguration of Donald Trump. Freezing weather has forced the proceedings indoors. Peter Armstrong reports. We won! Ain't no power less powerful! Thousands of protesters marched through Washington Saturday
Starting point is 00:02:03 to voice their discontent with the incoming president. The march is a far cry from the enormous nationwide crowds it took to the streets ahead of Donald Trump's first inauguration. And yet, Donald Trump is going back to the White House, and the streets of the Capitol are full of mega hat wearing, sign carrying enthusiasts. My purpose here is to support President Trump. The meticulous planning for the inauguration was scrapped this weekend as Trump announced
Starting point is 00:02:30 the ceremony will be held in the Capitol Rotunda because of what he called very cold weather. The bigger issue is organizers handed out more than 220,000 tickets for a ceremony that will now be held in the Capitol Rotunda. Ronald Reagan was inaugurated there in 1985, and back then, only 96 people were invited. For a president as exercised about crowd sizes as Trump is probably not how he wanted to get things started. Peter Armstrong, CBC News, Washington. Meanwhile, Donald Trump's invitation list is breaking with tradition. Presidential inaugurations are considered domestic U. domestic US events, so foreign states are typically represented by their ambassadors. But Trump is making exceptions.
Starting point is 00:03:12 Anna Cunningham has more. It's looking like the who's who of European right-wing populists. The Office of Italian Prime Minister Giorgio Maloney confirming she is attending. She met Donald Trump at his Florida home earlier this month. On the guest list also Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban, an admirer of Russian President Vladimir Putin. It's clear Europe's centrist mainstream politicians have been sidelined and space made at the inauguration for far-right and nationalist politicians. I've been unwavering in my support for Donald Trump. made at the inauguration for far-right and nationalist politicians.
Starting point is 00:03:47 The guest list includes not Britain's Prime Minister, but the leader of Reform UK, Nigel Farage. Also attending a French ultra-nationalist convicted of hate speech who expounds a far-right racist conspiracy theory. They've all voiced praise and admiration for President-elect Trump and all will be hoping to have his ear once he's in the White House. Anna Cunningham, CBC News, London. Trump also said today he will issue an executive order tomorrow in order to extend the deadline
Starting point is 00:04:18 before the ban on TikTok comes into effect into the U.S. The social networking app went dark late last night. In a post on his true social, Trump says he's giving Tick-Tock extra time, so quote, we can make a deal to protect our national security. He now says he wants the United States to have a 50% ownership stake in a joint venture with the current owners.
Starting point is 00:04:44 And that is your World This Hour. For CBC News, I'm Claude Fague.
