From CBC News, the world this hour, I'm Julie-Ann Hazel Wood. After 15 months of fighting, the Gaza ceasefire and hostage exchange deal is underway. Displaced Gazans are heading back to see what's left of their homes and the first of more than 30 hostages were released.
Starting point is 00:00:48 Sasha Petrusik has more details. There were cheers and tears from the families of the first hostages released today. Three women, one abducted by Hamas militants from a music festival, the other two taken from their kibbutz, handed over to the Red Cross in a crowd of armed Hamas militants, and later to the Israeli military. Starting point is 00:01:19 until every single hostage comes home. Joy too from Palestinians who welcomed the release of 90 detainees. Women and children released from Israeli prisons in exchange for the hostages. But the real excitement in Gaza was over the freedom to return to neighborhoods they fled because of war. Starting point is 00:01:56 campaign launch was disrupted by pro-Palestinian protesters. Supporters clapped in a bid to drown out the hecklers. Freeland pointed out she stood up to Donald Trump during his first term and can do it again. And says conservative leader Pierre Polyev doesn't have what it takes. If Pierre Polyev is elected, he will be on the first flight to Mar-a-Lago to kiss the ring. He will bend down and sell us out. Health Minister Mark Holland is endorsing Freeland for the Liberal Party leadership in Burlington, Ontario.

Government House Leader Karina Gould kicked off her leadership campaign today in her riding in hometown. At 37 years old, Gould is the youngest candidate in the leadership race, saying it's crucial that a new generation of leaders take the helm of the Liberal Party. We can rebuild this party so that we can re-earn the trust of Canadians and build the Canada that we want and win the next election. Gould says Canadians have lost faith in the Liberal Party and she's the one to rebuild
Starting point is 00:03:18 that faith. The B.C. government has declared gender-based violence an epidemic, a move advocates have long called for saying immediate action is needed. Janella Hamilton has more. It's an important acknowledgement because we absolutely have to recognize what we've been seeing on the ground. Angela Marie McDougall with Battered Women's Support Services says gender-based violence
Starting point is 00:03:39 is pervasive in B.C. with femicides in this province reaching critical levels. BC's finance minister has been mandated to make sure the justice system meets the needs of survivors and that more transition housing is available for women fleeing violence. But Erin Sealy with YWCA Metro Vancouver says transitional housing is just part of the solution. It's important that long-term housing for women and to us LGBTQI plus folks is considered. BC's parliamentary secretary of gender equity says she will work with indigenous partners, community service providers and an advisory committee to ensure survivors have the support they need.
Starting point is 00:04:22 Janella Hamilton, CBC News, Vancouver. TikTok is restoring service to users in the U.S. after the popular app went dark this weekend. The shutdown was in response to a federal ban. President-elect Donald Trump says he would try to pause the ban through executive order on his first day in office. And that is your World This Hour.
