From CBC News, the world is our. I'm Tom Herrington.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has held a virtual meeting with the country's premiers.
They talked about the Trump administration's threat to impose tariffs on Canadian goods. There appears to have been some
tension among the First Ministers. Trudeau supports the principle of dollar
for dollar retaliatory tariffs. But following the meeting, Saskatchewan
Premier Scott Moe says he disagrees with that idea.
Very targeted tariffs, small targeted tariffs that don't have an impact on our economy.
We have had discussions with the federal government about our support for those broad-based tariffs.
Dollar-for-dollar tariffs with the U.S. is not in Canadians' best interests,
nor should export tariffs ever be considered by our government.
In a post on X following the meeting, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith reiterated her opposition
to any tariffs on her province's energy exports.
New Democrats convened a strategic planning session today with their MPs in Ottawa.
It could be the last caucus retreat if the party follows through with its promise to
topple the Liberal government at the first opportunity.
As David Thurton reports, the NDP is focused on the tariff threat.
So now that Donald Trump has taken office, he's again reiterated the threat of tariffs
against Canada.
Emerging from his caucus retreat, Jagmeet Singh's remarks focused entirely on Donald
Trump and his threat to put a 25% tariff on Canadian goods next month.
The NDP leader spoke about his plan and how that differs from other political leaders
like the conservatives.
I think Pierre Paulyev has shown that he's out of touch with where people are at.
Things are changing.
And with the election of Donald Trump, it certainly means people are worried about what
Donald Trump means to Canada.
Singh has said for some time that the conservative leader has no plan.
For his part, Singh supports dollar-for-dollar retaliatory tariffs, severing the supply of
critical minerals
and restricting energy exports.

There is a new wildfire north of Los Angeles.
The Hughes Fire broke out this afternoon and nearly 20,000 people were ordered to evacuate.
Within hours it charred nearly 21 square kilometers of trees and brush.
The fast-moving flames are about 60 kilometers from the devastating Eaton and Palisade fires,
now burning for a third consecutive week.
Red flag warnings for critical fire danger are in effect through Thursday.
At least 12 people have died after a major winter storm slammed southern parts of the
United States.
The blizzard brought record-breaking snow, ice and dangerous
conditions to millions of people who've never seen anything like it. Nick Harper has more.

On average about once a decade that you would get measurable snow here where you could actually
go out and play in it.
He's one of more than 35 million people from Texas through Georgia to Florida who've been
hit by the deadly deep freeze.
New Orleans City official Joseph Thret is also struggling, the city seeing snow for
the first time in 15 years.
We're not a snow city so we don't have plows.
In a region that rarely sees snowfall, it's caused chaos on the roads and led to the cancellation
of more than 2,000 flights.
Houston Mayor John Whitmire.
This is a serious arctic blast.
It's dangerous.
It's life-threatening.
Schools remain closed in many of the states as the once-in-a-generation winter storm blankets
the south.

Israel says its soldiers killed an alleged Islamic jihad militant in Gaza.
It is the first time since the ceasefire began on Sunday, the Israeli military said its truck
targets in Gaza.
It is not clear whether the killing would affect
the agreement between Israel and Hamas.
Meantime in Jenin, Palestinians fled on foot as Israeli forces pressed ahead with a major
military operation in the occupied West Bank city. It is now in its second day. Local health
officials say at least 10 Palestinians have been killed.
And that is your World This Hour.
