Four Israeli hostages were released by Hamas today, and 200 Palestinian prisoners and detainees
were released by Israel.
But then the process hit a snag.
Sasha Petrasek explains.
After an emotional but smooth exchange of Israeli hostages for Palestinian prisoners,
the ceasefire deal hit a snag.
Hamas failed to meet its obligations to first release Israeli female civilian hostages as part of the agreement.
Israeli military spokesman Daniel Hagari accused Hamas of holding on to Arbel Yehud,
a 29-year-old taken from a border kibbutz. In return, Israel is refusing to allow Gazans
to move back to their homes in the north of the territory.
to move back to their homes in the north of the territory. Our victory is that we are going home even if our homes are destroyed,
says Suheer Bakr, going to look for her son's body near their house.
Mediators scrambled to resolve the issue in Cairo,
while aid organizations rushed to put up enough tents and deliver
enough food for this delayed homecoming.
Sasha Petrusik, CBC News, Jerusalem.
It has been nearly three years since Canada granted temporary visas to Ukrainians fleeing
the war, but those permits expire at the end of March and many are worried about what happens
next. Natalia Bodnarchuk is a mother of four who fled the war and settled in Edmonton.
For my daughter, she's turning five, and without these documents, I need to apply
for the visitor permit for her, but I cannot do that without passport. It's
honestly causing some stress in our daily life.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada says individuals who arrived under
the program can still apply for an extension of their open work or study
permits until March 31st. A Canadian sailor has died after an inflatable boat
he was in capsized in Halifax waters. According to the Royal Canadian Navy, the
accident occurred on Friday in the Bedford Basin
after the victim and another sailor in the boat
fell into the water.
The pair were involved in what the Navy calls
small boat operations involving a rigid hull inflatable boat.
The Navy says the operation involves an element of risk.
The pair were rescued and rushed to QE2 hospital,
but the victim could not be resuscitated.
The second sailor was treated and released.
Military police are investigating the accident.
Starting Monday, masks become mandatory
in all Prince Edward Island health facilities.
Health PEI says the system is under serious pressure
from patients with respiratory illnesses.
Marion Dowling is the chief of nursing for Health PEI.
What we're worried about is the respiratory illness,
the influenza season, the RSV that we've seen increases in,
and we know what the southern hemisphere of our world
experienced in their flu season, and it was a whopper.
So we don't want that here.
Our system is under strain. We want the staff to be protected. We want to prevent more patients from
getting sick. Well it had been over four decades since a Canadian male skier had
conquered kids field. That all changed today. Ed Kleiman reports. Jack Crawford
had won Olympic bronze and World Championship gold but the 27 year old
from Toronto went without a World Cup win in his first four years on the circuit. On Saturday he did it in
style, capturing the most prestigious of all World Cup races, the Hanan Kom
downhill in Kitzbuehl, Austria. He's the first Canadian to win there since Todd
Brooker in 1983. I didn't really expect it today. I knew that I was in a position
to ski really well and put forth a run that could contend,
but to actually see green when I crossed the finish line was something else.
Crawford shared the podium with teammate Cam Alexander from North Vancouver who took the bronze.
It's the first time in 13 years that two Canadians have won medals in the same World Cup downhill race.
