Starting point is 00:00:00 What does a mummified Egyptian child, the Parthenon marbles of Greece and an Irish giant all have in common? They are all stuff the British stole. Maybe. Join me, Mark Fennell, as I travel around the globe uncovering the shocking stories of how some, let's call them ill-gotten, artifacts made it to faraway institutions. Spoiler, it was probably the British. Don't miss a brand new season of Stuff the British Style. Watch it free on CBC Gem. From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Mike Miles.
Starting point is 00:00:36 Liberal leadership candidate Mark Carney is racking up more key endorsements. Defence Minister Bill Blair and Transport Minister Anita Annand are throwing their support behind the former banker. And as Olivia Stevanovic reports, all that momentum has made him a target of the Conservatives as well. This is a guy who might be Prime Minister in six weeks and he has yet to announce a single policy. Conservative deputy leader Melissa Lansman tried to get ahead of Mark Carney's latest campaign stop in Toronto, but it didn't go exactly as planned.
Starting point is 00:01:07 We want to know what Mark Carney, what Mark Carney promised Mr. Erskine Smith for his endorsement today. Local Liberal MP and newly appointed Housing Minister Nathaniel Erskine Smith interrupted Lantzman just before endorsing Carney as the next liberal leader. Canadians are going to know exactly what we intend to do. Carney says he intends to release policy details by the end of next week. Olivia Stefanovic, CBC News, Ottawa. Can you hear me okay?
Starting point is 00:01:39 Yes, we can hear you. Via video, Elon Musk addressed a Saturday rally by far-right party AFD or Alternative Germany. It was the party's election campaign launch. The U.S. tech billionaire and ally of Donald Trump has been accused of interfering in European politics with his comments about British and German politicians. Musk called AFD Germany's best hope for the future. It's okay to be proud to be German. This is a very important principle. Fight for a great future for Germany! Fight for a great future for Germany!
Starting point is 00:02:15 Go, go, go! Let's convince everyone. Let's go! Many AFD policies align with Trump, including opposition to immigration and denial of climate change. It's currently in second place in the polls at 20 percent, seen as a record for a far-right party in post-war Germany. The country goes to the polls later next month. U.S. President Donald Trump says he has a plan for Gaza, and it involves relocating many of the Palestinians living there to other countries.
Starting point is 00:02:43 Here's what he told reporters on Air Force One. I'd like Egypt to take people, and I'd like Jordan to take people. I mean, you're talking about probably a million and a half people, and we just clean out that hole. Something has to happen, but it's literally a demolition site right now. Almost everything's demolished.
Starting point is 00:03:05 Trump says he's already talked to Jordan's king and will talk Sunday with Egypt's president. Also, Trump added that Israel will now be getting 2,000-pound bombs. Former President Joe Biden had put deliveries on hold in an attempt to limit civilian casualties in Gaza. Trump said he released the bombs, quote, because they bought them.
Starting point is 00:03:23 With no warning, the Trump administration has fired at least a dozen Inspectors General from government agencies and departments. They were installed following the Watergate scandal in the 1970s to provide independent oversight against mismanagement and abuse of power. Mitch McCann is more. It's reported that Inspectors General have been fired from departments including agriculture, commerce, defense, education, labor, transportation, veterans affairs, as well as the Environmental Protection Agency and the Small Business Administration.
Starting point is 00:03:53 But the Trump administration may have broken the rules in how it did it. The law requires the White House to give Congress 30 days notice before IGs are dismissed, along with detailed case-specific reasons for the decision. In his statement, Republican Senator Chuck Grassley said he wants further explanation from President Trump on why he's firing them, adding that regardless of why, the legal requirement for 30 days notice was violated. Chuck Schumer, the leader of the Senate Democrats, called it a chilling purge and a preview of Trump's lawless approach to governing.
Starting point is 00:04:25 Mitch McCann for CBC News, New York. A Canadian freighter frozen in Lake Erie near Buffalo, New York is now free. The Manitoulin had delivered a load of wheat and was returning to Sarnia, Ontario when it got trapped Wednesday in meter-thick ice. Coast Guard ships from the U.S. and Canada got it loose Saturday. That is your World This Hour. For CBC News, I'm Mike Miles.
