Starting point is 00:00:00 When a body is discovered 10 miles out to sea, it sparks a mind-blowing police investigation. There's a man living in this address in the name of a deceased. He's one of the most wanted men in the world. This isn't really happening. Officers are finding large sums of money. It's a tale of murder, skullduggery and international intrigue. So who really is he? I'm Sam Mullins and this is Sea of Lies from CBC's Uncovered, available now.
Starting point is 00:00:34 From CBC News, it's the world this hour. I'm Joe Cummings. Israel says it has received a list confirming the status of the hostages scheduled to be released this week by Hamas David Menser is a spokesperson for the Israeli government The list from Hamas matches Israel's intelligence so I can share with you that 25 of our hostages are alive and 8 have been killed
Starting point is 00:01:05 Menser says the eight dead hostages were killed by Hamas. In total, Israeli authorities say there are still about 90 hostages being held in Gaza. Meanwhile, thousands of Gazans are now returning to their communities in the north. Roadblocks that have been up for months have been removed now as part of the release agreement. It has allowed the Israeli military to open a key route to the northern half of the territory. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is among the dignitaries in Poland today, marking the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. More than a million people, mostly Jews, were murdered at the Nazi concentration camp. And among the survivors attending today's memorial
Starting point is 00:01:50 services is Canadian Miriam Ziegler. Miriam Ziegler, Canadian Civil War Memorial Service member I had the most horrible nightmares since October when I was told I was coming here. I don't think I slept one night, like, you know, just slept and would wake up with a nightmare. And it's scary. It's very scary what's happening now in the world. Ziegler survived Auschwitz but lost family members in the death camp.
Starting point is 00:02:17 She met today with Prime Minister Trudeau. Trudeau is joined in Poland by French President Emmanuel Macron and King Charles, among other foreign dignitaries. And despite the fact that Russian Red Army liberated the camp in 1945, Russia has not been invited to attend the services in light of its invasion of Ukraine. The Liberal Party is blocking Ottawa MP Chandra Arya from running for the leadership. But we've yet to hear the official reason behind his disqualification. Janice McGregor has more.
Starting point is 00:02:46 Janice McGregor, Director, Office of Public Relations, Earlier yesterday morning, Arya seemed to still believe he was in the race posting that he thought contestants should have more opportunities to debate. But then by noon, he was posting that he'd been informed that he wouldn't be allowed to enter and that he was carefully considering his next steps because in his view his disqualification raised serious questions about the legitimacy of the race and by extension the legitimacy of the next prime minister. Now that is a serious thing to say about your own party, but it's also a serious thing
Starting point is 00:03:19 for the party to tell someone that sits in their own caucus, greenlit to run, elected as an MP in the past, that they're manifestly unfit to be leader. The rules require the party's vetters to tell the candidate their reasons and offer the candidate an opportunity to respond. But neither the party nor ARIA are sharing these reasons. We also don't know yet whether other candidates could be disqualified. The party has up to 10 days to vet candidates and confirm the final ballot. Janice McGregor, CBC News, Ottawa.
Starting point is 00:03:49 Still in Ottawa, Jonathan Pedneau is returning to the Federal Green Party. Pedneau was the party's deputy leader but resigned last summer for personal reasons. The tragic, in fact despicable, election south of the border of the president that is a sewage ing fascism and creating a threat to our way of living meant that I simply couldn't stand on the sidelines anymore. Petno says he wants to resume the position of co-leader but says the party membership has to first vote in favor of the move. It will be Philadelphia against Kansas City in this year's Super Bowl. The Eagles advanced yesterday with a win over Washington.
Starting point is 00:04:30 Kansas City earned their spot with a victory over Buffalo. And for KC, it means a shot at making Super Bowl history. To reach a level that's never been seen before in the history of the NFL, chance at three consecutive Super Bowl titles. Kansas City looks for that third straight Super Bowl win on February 9th, with this year's title game being played in New Orleans. And that is A World This Hour.
Starting point is 00:04:55 I'm Joe Cummings.
