Starting point is 00:02:33 learned the Prime Minister is planning to fill the 10 vacancies in the Senate before he retires in March. The move would allow Justin Trudeau to leave a mark on Parliament for years to come. The unelected legislators are able to sit in the upper chamber until the age of 75. In a written response, the Prime Minister's office says, the advisory board for Senate appointments is working to propose candidates for all vacancies. There is fierce fighting in eastern Congo. The Congolese Army exchanged gunfire with rebels backed by neighboring Rwanda. Agence France-Presse is reporting at least 17 people have been killed and more than 300 injured. Freelance reporter Chris Ochomringa has more from Kinshasa.
Starting point is 00:03:16 Heavy gunfire rang out in the city of Goma on Monday as the M23 rebels advanced towards Congo's largest city of North Kibo province. The spokesperson of the rebels later issued a statement saying they've captured the key city. The fall of Goma follows days of violent clashes between Congolese forces and the rebels. Patrick Muiaya is the spokesperson for the government of Congo. You know our force is very determined to protect our country, but there are civilians caught up in the middle of their fighting.
Starting point is 00:03:51 UN experts and the Congolese government have accused Rwanda of backing the rebels. The UN Security Council and EU foreign ministers condemned the violence and called on Rwanda to withdraw its troops from Congolese territory. DeepSeek says it's developed a model of the technology that costs far less than American competitors such as OpenAI and chat GPT. The value of chipmaker Nvidia
Starting point is 00:04:30 fell hard, dropping 17% in value, which in turn weighed down the NASDAQ exchange. But Nvidia says DeepSeek's work shows how useful its chips can be for the Chinese market.
