When a body is discovered 10 miles out to sea, it sparks a mind-blowing police investigation.
There's a man living in this address in the name of a deceased.
He's one of the most wanted men in the world.
This isn't really happening.
Officers are finding large sums of money.
It's a tale of murder, skullduggery and international intrigue.
So who really is he?
I'm Sam Mullins and this is Sea of Lies from CBC's Uncovered, available now.
From CBC News, the world this hour.
I'm Tom Harrington.
The public inquiry into foreign interference says there are no traitors in parliament,
but Commissioner Marie-José Ogg says the federal government and national security agencies have to do more to prevent meddling by foreign states.
Raffy Boudjie-Canyon has more.
I saw evidence of some concerning behaviour.
Commissioner Marie-Josée Ogg says there is need for caution but...
The evidence does not show any MPs plotting with foreign states against Canada's interests.
That evidence? 47,000 government documents mostly classified. More than a hundred witnesses interviewed,
including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, members of his cabinet and the head of Canada's spy agency, CSIS.
Ogg says the threat of meddling is real.
Certain foreign states are attempting to interfere in our electoral processes and democratic institutions.
Ogg has multiple recommendations, some focusing on the pre-rit period,
suggesting elections Canada should have jurisdiction over nominations and party leadership contests.
She also says CSIS needs to do a better job flagging political decision-makers about the
relevance of its intelligence. Rafi Boudjikani on CBC News, Ottawa. One of the hitmen who confessed
to killing former Air India bombing suspect Rupuram Singh Malik has been sentenced. Tanner Fox was
initially charged with first-degree murder but pleaded guilty to second degree. Fox and an accomplice shot and killed Malik in July 2022 in Surrey, BC. In 2005, Malik was acquitted on charges related to the
1985 Air India bombing. Fox has been sentenced to mandatory life in prison. He'll serve 20 years
before he's eligible for parole. Ontario's premier has set the province on course to an election.
Doug Ford asked Lieutenant Governor Edith Dumont to dissolve the provincial parliament today.
Ontarians will cast their ballot on February 27th, 15 months ahead of the fixed election date.
Ford claims he needs a new mandate now because of the uncertainty sparked by those potential American tariffs.
This isn't going to happen overnight. It may not happen February 1st. I'm sure something's coming.
But this is going to be a battle for the next four years.
And I want to make sure that I have a strong mandate to outlast President Trump.
Opposition parties are calling the election a waste of time and money.
The White House confirmed today the 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico
will be imposed on Saturday. A new analysis links the wildfires in Los Angeles to increasingly
severe weather conditions caused by climate change. Researchers warn it's just a matter
of time before disasters such as the LA fires happen again. Inayat Singh has more.
This is my home.
People pick up the pieces in the devastated neighborhoods of Los Angeles.
And my home is gone.
What would have once been considered a once-in-a-lifetime disaster is no longer the case.
A new rapid analysis says the dry weather conditions fueling the fires are now 35% more likely because of human-caused global warming.
Noa Defenbohr is a climate scientist at Stanford University.
Climate change is exacerbating the risk, and
it's exacerbating the risk in the areas where we also have more people and
structures in high-risk areas.
Even as the fires come under control and people turn to rebuilding, the region faces a daunting
challenge adapting to its new, more fire-prone reality.
Inayat Singh, CBC News, Toronto.
Medical facilities in Goma are reportedly overwhelmed and essential services have obviously
been disrupted.
UN spokesperson Stefan Dujaric speaking about the ongoing violence in eastern Congo.
Yesterday, Rwandan-backed M23 rebels marched into Goma, eastern Congo's largest city.
It's the worst escalation in the long-running conflict in more than a decade.
Congo accuses Rwanda of sending troops into its territory.
Rwanda says fighting near the border is threatening its own security.
Protests in the Congolese capital Kinshasa have turned violent and several embassies have been targeted.
And that is your World This Hour. For CBC News, I'm Tom Harrington. Thanks for listening.
