Starting point is 00:00:00 When a body is discovered 10 miles out to sea, it sparks a mind-blowing police investigation. There's a man living in this address in the name of a deceased. He's one of the most wanted men in the world. This isn't really happening. Officers are finding large sums of money. It's a tale of murder, skullduggery and international intrigue. So who really is he? I'm Sam Mullins and this is Sea of Lies from CBC's Uncovered, available now.
Starting point is 00:00:34 From CBC News, it's the world this hour. I'm Joe Cummings. The Bank of Canada is making another interest rate cut. The central bank is out today with its first setting of the new year, and it's trimming its influential rate by 25 basis points. That moves it down to 3%. Peter Armstrong has more. The Bank of Canada is in a difficult spot here.
Starting point is 00:00:56 It's trying to navigate an obviously an excessively cloudy forecast. Indeed, right out of the gates, it says this policy report is subject to what it calls more than usual uncertainty because of the rapidly evolving policy landscape, particularly, it says, the threat of trade tariffs by the new administration in the United States. And it says that since the scope and duration of a possible trade conflict are impossible to predict, this NPR, this report today, provides a baseline forecast in the absence of new tariffs. So basically, it's put out a forecast without even factoring in what a trade war would look like. And it still found the Canadian economy needed the boost of another rate cut.
Starting point is 00:01:33 It says previous cuts are working, but business investment is weak. Employment is soft. And the really, the only high spots are exports, which may well get slapped with tariffs. The bank will meet again on March 12th and it may well by then be looking at a very different economic landscape. Peter Armstrong, CBC News, Toronto. Meanwhile with the Trump administration's February 1st tariff date fast approaching, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is again meeting today with the premiers. It's expected the first
Starting point is 00:02:00 ministers will be looking to help finalize Canada's response plan, which along with retaliatory tariffs could also include a stimulus package aimed at supporting Canadian businesses that will be directly impacted by any American trade action. Senate confirmation proceedings are underway in Washington for Robert Kennedy Jr., but they got off to a rocky start. Robert Kennedy Jr. News reports have claimed that I'm anti-vaccine or anti-industry.
Starting point is 00:02:26 I am neither. I am pro-safety. First of all, pro-safety! It's a protester interrupting Kennedy as he was delivering his opening remarks. Kennedy is the Trump administration's nominee for health secretary. And despite his comments this morning,
Starting point is 00:02:43 he has said in the past that vaccines are unsafe. Meanwhile, he's expected to face opposition from some Republican members for his pro-choice position. Kennedy's views on abortion have drawn criticism in recent days from anti-abortion groups and from former Vice President Mike Pence. A final total has yet to be released, but at least 30 deaths are now confirmed, following
Starting point is 00:03:05 a stampede today at the Kumaila Religious Festival in northern India. Salima Shivji has the latest. People kept stepping on us, this woman says, outside a temporary hospital. I made it out safely, but my mother has died. The main crowd surge happened where the Ganges and Yamuna rivers meet, a spot considered holy for devout Hindus, on the biggest day of the world's largest religious festival, with a hundred million people expected to attend to take a bath in the waters
Starting point is 00:03:33 in the belief it washes away their sins. Hours after the stampede, officials were still tiptoeing around a death tour. India's Prime Minister offered condolences for those who lost loved ones. But the state's Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath, only said he hoped the injured would recover. He asked people to not believe in any negative rumours. Crowd management and safety was a big question heading into this year's Mahakum Mela, a 45-day festival of faith and devotion. The last Mahakum also had a stampede on its biggest
Starting point is 00:04:05 day, with 42 people killed in 2013. Salima Shivji, CBC News, Mumbai. Australian police say they have foiled a planned attack on Sydney's Jewish community. There's only one way of calling it out, and that is terrorism. This would strike terror into the community, particularly the Jewish community, and it must be met with the full resources of the government. As Chris Minns, the Premier of New South Wales, commenting after police discovered a trailer outside the city packed with explosives.
Starting point is 00:04:35 It's believed a significant attack was being planned involving at least one synagogue. Police say a number of suspects are in custody. And that is The World This Hour.
