When a body is discovered 10 miles out to sea, it sparks a mind-blowing police investigation.
There's a man living in this address in the name of a deceased.
He's one of the most wanted men in the world.
This isn't really happening.
Officers are finding large sums of money.
It's a tale of murder, skullduggery and international intrigue.
So who really is he?
I'm Sam Mullins and this is Sea of Lies from CBC's Uncovered, available now.
From CBC News, the world is our.
I'm Tom Harrington.
Donald Trump's nominee for Commerce Secretary is teasing about a possible reprieve from
those tariffs.
Howard Lutnick told his confirmation hearing
the levies won't be imposed on Saturday as threatened
if Canada claps down on fentanyl shipments into the US.
This is a separate tariff to create action from Mexico
and action from Canada.
And as far as I know, they are acting swiftly.
And if they execute it, there will be no tariff and if they don't
Then there will be but it's an action oriented model overall
Lutnick says he favors broad tariffs on all products from a country even if those countries are allies
Lutnick is expected to be confirmed
Provincial and territorial premiers held another virtual meeting with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau today. Again, the subject was their Team Canada strategy.
US tariffs on all Canadian imports are expected to be announced this weekend.
Rafi Boudjikani has more.
You can't invest in healthcare if your economy gets attacked.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford trying to turn the tariff crisis into a political opportunity,
launching his re-election campaign in Windsor
right across from the U.S.
Who do you trust to take care of the people of Ontario and the businesses and the workers?
But should he get a new mandate, it would be close to a month away, and President Donald
Trump's administration warns tariffs will arrive on Saturday.
Today Ford took part in a call with provincial and territorial counterparts and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
We don't know what new tariffs will be imposed when...
Tiff Macklem is the Bank of Canada's governor.
We have little historical experience with tariff changes of the magnitude that the U.S. is contemplating.
A source with knowledge of the discussion with Canadian officials tells CBC the government is unclear on whether tariffs will be imposed on Saturday or if the US is aiming for April.
Rafi Boudjikani on CBC News, Ottawa. Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Jolie is
expected to meet with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington today.
Jolie says she believes diplomacy can still head off Donald Trump's plan to
impose those 25% tariffs on Canadian goods.
She's been meeting with members of Congress and state governors, making Canada's case.
The Bank of Canada has lowered its key interest rate again.
It dropped it by a quarter of one percent to three percent.
Governor Tiff Macklem says inflation has remained at the target level and economic activity
is growing.
But that stability is in danger if the U.S. carries out that threat to put tariffs on
Canadian goods.
Macklem says the bank is preparing.
As we consider our monetary policy response, we will need to carefully assess the downward
pressure on inflation from weakness in the economy and weigh that against the upward
pressure on inflation from higher input prices and supply chain disruptions.
The bank has lowered its GDP growth projections to 1.8 percent for 2025 and 2026.
Another confirmation hearing is underway for President Donald Trump's
controversial pick for Health and Human Services Secretary.
Robert Kennedy Jr. has long cast doubt on the safety and benefits of vaccines,
everything from the polio vaccine to the COVID shot.
Those previous comments prompted a combative grilling
from senators.
I support the measles vaccine.
I support the polio vaccine.
I will do nothing as HHS secretary.
That makes it difficult or discourages people
from taking either of those doses.
Anybody who believes that ought to look at the measles book you wrote saying parents
have been misled into believing that measles is a deadly disease.
If confirmed, RFK Jr. would oversee dozens of U.S. agencies. That list includes the Food
and Drug Administration, the Centers for Disease Control, and the National Institutes for Health. At least 30 people were killed and 60 others were injured in a stampede
at the world's largest religious gathering today. Millions of pilgrims rushed to dip in sacred waters
during the Mahakumf festival. One official says the stampede happened when some of those pilgrims
tried to jump barricades. Hindus believe bathing at the holy site can cleanse them of past sins.
And that is your World This Hour.
For CBC News, I'm Tom Harrington.
Thanks for listening.
