US President Donald Trump says 25% tariffs are coming on almost all Canadian
Starting point is 00:00:32 goods, likely less on oil and gas. Katie Simpson reports. There is nothing, nothing Canada, Mexico or China can do. Tariffs are happening no matter what. When the president first made this threat, he said that if Canada and Mexico had made border security improvements to stop illegal drugs and migrants from entering the US, that tariffs would not happen. But Donald Trump changed his tune, which is not something that's uncommon for Donald Trump. Speaking with reporters in the Oval Office, he was asked if there is anything these countries can do to avoid tariffs, and he rejected the idea. It's a pure economic. We have big deficits with, as you know, with all three of them.
Starting point is 00:01:14 And we'll just see what happens. He's thinking about a 10% tariff on Canadian oil, but everything else could be hit with 25% tariffs. Details are supposed to be made public tomorrow until we get those specifics on paper. It is uncertain exactly what's going to happen other than he says tariffs are coming. The CBC's Katie Simpson reporting from Washington. Canada is working on its response to the Trump tariffs. Several cabinet ministers have also been meeting with American officials in Washington. Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Jolie says that work will continue. And I think that the reaction towards our border plan or the reaction regarding
Starting point is 00:01:54 just the fact that there is a trade surplus when it comes to goods between Canada and the US, if you don't take into account the question of energy, and when we present these arguments, people are reacting extremely positively. Jolie says the government has not yet seen specifics on what tariffs will be imposed. To Philadelphia. I just see the plane is getting lower and lower and lower. Starting point is 00:02:26 A witness describes what he saw after a medical transport jet crashed into a mall in a North Philadelphia neighborhood shortly after takeoff Friday night. Authorities confirm a medevac jet carrying a child patient, her mother, and a crew of four crashed about 30 seconds after takeoff, setting some homes and vehicles on fire. Shay Gold represents the air ambulance company, which operates the plane. This flight was a repatriation flight of a patient who recovered and was headed home. She was fit to fly, clear to go back home, and we were contracted by a third party charitable
Starting point is 00:03:02 organization to transport her back to Mexico. So the final destination was to Biti Juana International Airport. Authorities can't confirm any survivors from the plane. Local reports say that several people on the ground were injured and there were some fatalities, but so far those reports have not been confirmed by authorities. Officials in Washington, D.C. say there are still bodies in the wreckage of Wednesday night's fatal mid-air collision. 67 people died when a U.S. Army helicopter flew into a commercial airliner. Paul Hunter reports.
Starting point is 00:03:36 The Potomac was again the site of divers continuing their grisly task of trying to retrieve bodies, body parts, and as well remnants of the plane and military helicopter as they rest in the shallow but ice-cold waters of the river. We're working as fast as we can. Washington, D.C. Emergency Services Chief John Donnelly. I believe for us to recover the rest of the remains that we are going to need to get the fuselage out of the water. That he expects will be sometime next week.
Starting point is 00:04:05 Meanwhile, investigators are going through the so-called black boxes retrieved from both the plane and the helicopter with their cockpit voice recordings and flight data. Reports now signal a potential key finding. Multiple U.S. news outlets say there's evidence that when it struck the plane, the helicopter was flying well above the allowed altitude for that part of the river. Paul Hunter, CBC News, Washington.
