Starting point is 00:00:00 Every language is a note in the symphony of our heritage. Together, they create a harmony that cannot be silenced. Discover your voice on the new APTN Languages TV channel. From CBC News, the world is our. I'm Tom Harrington. Donald Trump is once again calling for the Palestinian people to move out of Gaza permanently. The president made the comments sitting next to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
Starting point is 00:00:46 just before their Oval Office meeting. Trump says the area is too damaged from the war to ever be livable again. You can't live in Gaza right now and I think we need another location. I think it should be a location that's going to make people happy. You look over the decades, it's all death in Gaza. This has been happening for years. It's all death. A few hours earlier, Trump signed an executive order to pull American funding from UNRWA,
Starting point is 00:01:12 the main United Nations agency that distributes aid to the Palestinians. Canada's public safety minister says, like Donald Trump, he's focused on fentanyl at the border. David McGinty was at a border crossing in Manitoba today, meeting with RCMP and border services agents. Cameron McIntosh was there too. A Canada border services agent demos a fentanyl screening machine at the border crossing at Emerson, Manitoba, as Federal Public Safety Minister David McGinty watches.
Starting point is 00:01:41 Our objective was to prevent terrorists. Our objective continues to be to prevent tariffs. Speaking to a group of RCMP and CBSA agents, McGinty said his focus is on U.S. President Donald Trump's fixation on fentanyl. McGinty said he'll have more to say about the appointment of a Canadian fentanyl czar later this week.
Starting point is 00:01:59 As for Trump's promise to revisit tariffs next month. Trying to project where the White House might be in 30 days is... I have to be honest with you, I just don't have that kind of luxury of time. This is good for Canada to make sure that our borders are safe and secure. McGinty says his focus is squarely on the border. Cameron McIntosh, CBC News, on the Canada-U.S. border near Emerson, Manitoba. One Canadian city is catching heat about fentanyl on American cable news.
Starting point is 00:02:25 On CNBC Today, President Trump's top economic adviser, Kevin Hassett, singled out Edmonton as an example of Canada's drug problem, citing a recent visit to the Alberta capital. The fentanyl issue and Canada's handling of it is one reason behind Trump's tariff threats. Edmonton City Councilor Tim Cartmel calls the comments harmful. I think it's pretty alarming when somebody in the United States goes on national network and uses Edmonton as the example of the disorder and the scourge of fentanyl use in Canada. It's that kind of a message that is being communicated that Edmonton is not a place you want to spend time. That is a real problem.
Starting point is 00:03:04 He says all levels of government are actively working to tackle homelessness and addiction in Edmonton. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is a step closer to becoming the U.S. Health Secretary. Mr. Chairman, the final tally was 14 ayes, 13 nays. The vote was 14-13. The nomination is reported favorably. The Senate Finance Committee voted in favor of Kennedy's nomination earlier today. That clears the way for Kennedy to face a full Senate vote. It's expected to be just as close, with Democrats and some Republicans concerned about Kennedy's position on vaccine safety.
Starting point is 00:03:38 The RCMP says four people have been found dead in a home on a First Nation in southern Saskatchewan. Police say officers with the File Hills Police Service discovered the bodies this morning. They were called to the home on the Karee the Kettle Nakoda Nation, east of Regina. They say an initial investigation indicates the deaths are suspicious, but didn't provide details about a possible suspect. The Aga Khan has died at the age of 88. Prince Karim Aga Khan was for decades the spiritual leader of an estimated 15 million Ismaili Muslims. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau learned of his death while attending an event in Ottawa. The two knew each other and Trudeau
Starting point is 00:04:17 called Aga Khan the extraordinary and compassionate global leader. He will be deeply, deeply missed by people around the world, but particularly the Ismaili community that is grieving tonight. Our hearts go out to all of them. And I lost a very good friend, a friend of my father's and a friend of mine. The Trudeau family friendship led to an ethics scandal for the Prime Minister. He vacationed on the Aga Khan's private island in the Caribbean back in 2016. And that is your World This Hour. For CBC News, I'm Tom Harrington. Thanks for listening.
